Hey everyone, I'm testing a simple system that I'm coming up with for a future (way in the future) quest. All feedback is appreciated, and if anyone knows lots of stuff about jap history/culture/geography, you're welcome to add me on discord so you can recommend me reads or help me out while fleshing the system. Discord's @Typhus#0528

Warning: Posting will be irregular and slow compared to other quests. I'll be taking notes as I see how things develop.

Japan. Sengoku Jidai. The Ashikaga shoguns have fallen on hard times. Their authority is barely respected outside of the capital and its surrounding regions. The sengoku Daimyos plot and war against each other. The people suffer as lords steal or even pillage the countryside for whatever resources they can use in their bid for power.

The great clans prepare for the incoming period of turmoil, and so do the lower ranks of society. You are one of these people, a ronin, in fact. Your old daimyo, who financed your relatively poor education, was crushed underfoot by the forces of an opposing clan, the Yamana. You fled your old hometown of Asago for Taka, a land governed by the Akamatsu clan who held your old liege in high esteem.

The small town is held under jurisdiction of Akamatsu Masamoto, younger brother of the Akamatsu Harumasa, the daimyo of the Akamatsu clan. The villagers scurry around under the shade of castle Noma, where Masamoto lives. You sit close to a stall of food, the merchant who owns the place gives you a glare, but looks away when he sees your Daisho, your combo of a Katana and a Wazikashi, which indicates your status as Samurai.

You sit back and ponder on what's happened the last few years. The change was so sudden, you wonder if you even are alive, or this is some afterlife created by the Kami.

As a boy, you were known for:
>Swiftly defeating your fellow students in the dojo.
>Hunting as well as a hawk.
>Reading and understanding works of Japanese literature with ease.
>Constantly attempting to maintain the Bushido code.

As any samurai must, you had to train at arms, you learned:
>Atemi-jutsu. The precursor of Karate. Your hands and feet become like steel when they hit your foe.
>Kenjutsu. The art of battling with the sword and foremost need to prove your dedication to the Bushido.
>Sojutsu. The art of battling with a spear, many samurai learn Kenjutsu to keep up with the Bushido teachings, you simply thought a spear sounded more useful in a fight.

Your Daimyo taught you to learn the finer arts in order to maintain a measure of honour, you dedicated yourself to:
>Monomane. You learned how to dance and perform dramatic works.
>Go. As did many other young men with you, playing Go is a great passtime in medieval Japan.
>Music. You learned the basics of music composition and made a song or two for the court to hear.

Bushido values were taught to you by Yagi Hidemori, who served as the master of the dojo in your old lord's castle town. As far as you know, Hidemori committed seppuku after Asago fell and the old Otagaki with it.

Technically, you should've committed seppuku as well. One of the eight earthly values is Duty and Loyalty, which implies that a samurai must die with his lord, but you couldn't. Some say it was youth that made you refuse, though lord Otagaki Tomonobu told you not to feel blame, that you had a better future than dying for the sake of bushido.

Lord Otagaki was never known for his following of all the bushido code, but he taught you three of the eight earthly values as well as he could:

>Righteousness:
Behave justly when others don't. Take in all points of view when others refuse to, and commit to the decisions you take hence.
>Courage:
Courage is not blind, it is intelligent and strong. When an opportunity strikes, take it and do not shy away in fear.
>Benevolence:
You are stronger and quicker than most. You must use that power for good and help your fellow men.
>Respect:
A warrior has no reason to be cruel. They have no need to prove their strength, he shows it when times are hard.
>Honesty:
There are no promises, all words uttered are honest and true. Speaking and doing are the same action.
>Duty/Loyalty:
You are responsible for all you've done and the consequences that follow. Be loyal to those who are in your care, be true to those you are responsible for.

Courage, Respect, and Rigtheousness. This is what old lord Otagaki taught you since you were a child. The traits of a just and brave warrior who defends the weak. He told you to remember the words for each, Gi for righteousness, You for courage, Rei for respect. Giyourei.

As you ponder on your daimyo's wisdom, you can't help but feel a deep sadness knowing that he's probably no longer in this world. You clench your chest, and do what he told you to do when you felt sadness. Think of your proud name.

...Yositomu Morisada! The thought reverberates through your head. The Yositomu clan has a history that goes as far away as the lands of Oshu. Your ancestors lived in the extensive forests that the Date now call home. One of the many branches split from the great tree of Yositomu went all the way to Asago! Or so your father used to say when he travelled with you there. Your father, Moritake, serves some retainer of the Shiba Clan in Owari province now. He left you here as you were his third child, and the Otagaki had want for a young retainer.

Now the Otagaki are no more, you have no real means to travel back to your father and you have dishonor on your name for breaking the virtue of Duty to your Daimyo, you are a ronin. You could say that your Daimyo told you to leave, most would respond that you should've refused anyway and died with him. You know your father wouldn't, but he's not here right now.

The merchant is eyeing you up from his stall. You've spent enough time discomforting him. There's many steps you can take to regain your honour as a Samurai, but first, you need money. You have food for this one day and no bed to sleep at, you've also got the spare change you were able to retreive during your hurried retreat to Taka

>Visit various people from the town and ask for work.

The walk around town proves to be fruitful. You've spoken to various merchants whose eyes gleamed when they saw you, and some of the castle guard also had some things to ask of you. No one seemed to know of you.

The guards told you of an issue with bandits in a nearby hilly forest. They say they're ashigaru from the Otagaki clan who've lost all measure of honor and have no home to go back to, thus they turned to raiding and plundering villages. If you get rid of them, you'll be able to claim a large bounty that the local lord, Akamatsu Masamoto, is offering, along with the chance of meeting the lord with praises.

The nearby merchants mention that the ashigaru aren't really that much of an issue. One of them offers you pay in exchange of your protection while he travels to the land of Hikami in the northeast, ruled by a retainer of the Ashikaga shogun named Akai Iekiyo. They say that Iekiyo's brother Naomasa is a reputed warrior and an honourable samurai. Another merchant says he's going southwest to Kanzaki where the Daimyo of the Akamatsu clan, Harumasa, resides. Some say the man is a courtly spider, but it is said in low hushes.

>Take care of the Otagaki ashigaru bandits.

You accompany the soldiers to receive a quick briefing on the situation. According to reports there are around 5 ashigaru and 1 ronin there. The ronin has been identified as a young man named Naomitsu. All they know is that they're hiding in the hills between Asago and Taka, close to the source of a stream nearby the village of Ohata. A day or two of marching away.

You're free to ask the soldiers question if you wish.

You check your savings, around 200 mon. Each day's ration of food is around 10 mon. You sit and wonder what you should do to take care of all 6 foes.

You explain the ashigaru your plan in detail, how you would stalk your 'prey' and how to deliver a powerful blow to it before it can do anything. They look at you with suspicion at first, but are eventually swayed by your knowledge of the forests and hills of the land.

The ashigaru pick up their yari and accompany you outside, various patrolmen eye you up with suspicion. You make your purpose clear to them and they sigh in relief, the sudden surge of ronin and ashigaru without work in the town is keeping them on edge.

As you head out from the town, you meet a ronin. You grip your daisho, hoping this man has no ill will. He says his name is Sugimori Mototane and he's been seeking work for the past few days, he heard of your search for able men to fight and offers his services to help you on your quest. He bears the usual daisho, though both swords seem worn, what jumps out from him is his yumi and a quiver holding arrows. You don't recognize the ronin at all, neither do the ashigaru going with you. The man says that he comes from Kuga, way in the west, and he is the fifth son of a retainer of the Ouchi clan, the largest clan in the Chugoku region.

Sugimori Mototane thanks you for your trust. Your band of 6 depart from the town in the direction of Ohata. One of the ashigaru tell you that Ohata is a poor farmer's village that subsists mainly on wheat and hunting game for the local lord. Another one tells you that he knew the other band that went rogue, they were bullies and scum before the clan fell, threatening and stealing is their only way of life. The ashigaru advises you to be careful, as they will have no issue staining their honor when battling against our band.

After a few hours, shortly before reaching the town, Mototane asks you why you would go through such a dangerous task when you are a masterless ronin. He mentions that you could've simply travelled far away to meet your luck where no one knows you.

Mototane smiles at the thought. "I feel that is idealistic, though the beauty of humanity is that some maintain such thoughts in their heads."

You arrive at Ohata and take your band to speak with the elder there. The villagers do not come out to see you, much to your surprise. The elder explains that the village has been getting bullied by the bandits came for tribute in both women and wheat and promised to come by next week. Considering the time that's passed since then, that's in three days.

Mototane mentions that the best course of action would be to wait for these fools to come by in 3 days and kill them on the spot. The elder says that he has no issue feeding 6 people for that time, but that the women that were taken away would be hard to find or might die if you wait 3 days, he implores you to go out and find them now.

The ashigaru say they will follow your lead no matter what you choose. One of them says that bandits are usually wary when coming into villages they rob from, as younger peasants can sometimes set up traps.

>Wait for them in the village and kill them on the spot.

The elder seems ecstatic at the news and offers you provisions to take on your search. You spend a few hours resting and preparing at the village before heading out. There are various ways to muffle the sound that one makes when hunting, from apparel modifications to general mindset.

During these hours, you tell your band how to stay quiet in the woods and avoid making sounds. Mototane seems participates as well and often times surpasses you in his knowledge, though he commends you for being this skilled at such a young age.

You, Mototane, and your men are then ready to head out. The villagers tell you the direction that the bandits took to head back to the woods. It is a cold trail, but your band will try to make the best of it.

Your band divides as you enter the forest, searching for potential clues leading towards the bandits. You and Mototane are instantly stricken by some broken branches and foliage that all lead towards more or less towards the north. The two of you call up the ashigaru and head north, following the trail.

Mototane mentions that considering the amount of time the bandits have spent in the wilds, they've probably built some makeshift home in a cavern or a large enough hole in the hills. Building a shack is out of the question, as mudslides and the dense forest make that near impossible in such hills.

You take in the knowledge brought up by Mototane during your scale of the hill. After a while searching the exact area where these bandits could've found a home, you find a cave further up. All of your men hide around behind large stones, foliage and trees. Mototane observes from the trees and so do you.

The entrance is barred by a few thick and long branches, outside, a fireplace is petering out. You do not see or hear anyone, and can't prove if there has been recent movement without getting closer.

The foes approach the fire and start talking to each other, mentioning things about the women they kidnapped. One of them begins preparing the fire again, while the other two sit down and continue their talk. You hear them say that they should bring the women to their main den instead of keeping them in some other cave, before an animal kills them.

You command your small troop to start advancing towards the enemy. It is time for bloodshed. You unsheathe your katana, Mototane takes up his bow and an arrow, while the ashigaru prop up their yari. Hopefully, you can be quiet enough to reach these fools before they notice you.

Rolled 18 (1d60)

Roll result: 5

Your band stays surprisingly quiet during the way, your teachings seems to have been taken in rather well. Right as you are about to reach your enemy, one of your ashigaru cracks a branch.

The enemies turn around to meet you, but you've got the jump on them, their weapons are on the ground still.

You take up your katana and remember the teachings of master Yagi Hidemori. The sword is an extension of the body, and is one with the samurai.

You lunge at one of the surprised ashigaru that is reaching for his spear, you hear Mototane firing an arrow, and your ashigaru run into the rest of the foes.

Your combat score: DC - roll = 42 - 10 = 32

The despaired ashigaru tries to lock down your arm in order to stop your blow but you were much faster. With a slice of your sword, you slice the ashigaru's hand off his arm. He lets out a scream and falls down on the floor, begging for his life as he tries to stop the flow of blood.

Behind you, you see one ashigaru with an arrow in his chest, sprawled on the ground.

The other ashigaru has multiple stab wounds from your yari ashigaru and is lying on the ground, begging for mercy.

The battle went on swiftly.

>Stay and question the wounded ashigaru before they die.

The ashigaru whose hand was cut is fading in and out of consciousness, which removes him from questioning. You and Mototane head towards the last living one, your own ashigaru prop him and make him stay on his knees as he faces you.

As you reach him, you notice how he's now crying his eyes out. The wounds aren't going to kill him, you're pretty sure. Most of the spear stabs aren't much more than flesh wounds. It seems your ashigaru had no will to kill him on a four on one battle.

You stand in front of the ashigaru, Mototane at your side with his bow, standing guard and looking for reinforcements. The ashigaru looks at you in the eye, seeking for hints of mercy. In a flash, he seems to recognize you.

"You are lord Yositomu? Please my lord! Have mercy on me, I've behaved in dishonorable and unjust ways but I can redeem myself! Please let me join you!"

>Accept, let him confess the ways of his comrades.
>Refuse, he has tarnished Otagaki's honour. The information will be extracted and he will die.
>Beat him to a pulp along with the rest of the ashigarus, then accept and let him confess.

"How far are you willing to go to recover your honour?" You ask the ashigaru before slamming your fist on his jaw.

"Beat him, but do not kill him." You tell your ashigaru. They proceed, punching him and hitting him with the butt of their yari. The man takes it in silence, keeping in tears. He sometimes lets out screams of pain as some of the hits reach his open wounds.

When you see him roughed up, you order your men to stop. "Now, you will accompany us until we return to Noma. There I will decide your fate. If you live, you will owe me your life."

The ashigaru nods and struggles to bow before you. "Yes, lord Yositomu. I pray for your good wisdom to reconsider my service."

You order him to confess where the girls are. He says he will take you to them. Your ashigaru sweep through the cave, there's nothing in it of value except for a bushel of stolen wheat, which could be sold at a decent price.

Mototane comes close to you and gives a word of warning. There's five people coming, two of them are being dragged.

>Hide in the cave for now and jump out when the time comes.
>Stand firm and await for their arrival.

Perhaps not as glorious as standing our ground outside, but we have no idea if the opposing soldiers have bows. I'd rather not lose any friendlies on our first outing.
