"I am a human."

Oh for fuck's sake Louis.

"Not a case 53 I mean, I have memories... lots of them. None I can tell you though because they're all deeply personal, as memories should be." He stops for a moment, before continuing, a mischievous glint in his eye. "And also because my secret identity is very important to me... Wait a minute, you're trying to figure out who I am aren't you?!"

The sheer conversational whiplash seems to wash over Miss Militia like a wave, the colour draining from her face as she puts up her hands and retreats. "Wait, that's not what I was doing at all. I just wanted to make sure that you were okay. You didn't look human, so I had to ask."

He turns back towards her at that and lets out a low chuckle, tilting his head and winking as he does so. "And now I don't even look human she says? How terribly hurtful. Oh I was just joking, don't get so worked up."

She looks skeptical at first, but you've shown Nancy where the spy from before was which serves as an excellent distraction. A quick game of charades later and you've worked up enough of a description to distract Miss Militia with, using Nancy as your interpreter.

"Hey, Observer says someone was watching us from a rooftop, apparently he had a demon mask on?" She turns back to double check as she says it, to which you nod vigorously. "He's gone now though.

Miss Militia sighs deeply at that, before wincing and bringing her hand back to her chest. "Good thing you took his soldiers out then, or he might have joined in. Oni Lee's a psychopath, I could really do without any of his particular brand of evil." She takes another long look at the three of you, before speaking again, this time with a bit more levity in her voice. "This is where I usually give the recruitment speech, listing all the reasons you should join up with the Protectorate but it looks like you've got your own group so I won't bother, plus you're all adults so I trust you to have better judgement than your average new cape. Just be careful alright?"

She hands Louis a business card with her logo and the Protectorate number on. "If you or your group ever needs to get in contact, just give this a call. I look forward to working with you."

"Actually, we're not quite the average Hero group." That seems to get her attention, yours as well.

What the fuck are you doing now Louis?

Let him tell her about the Clinic. And your plans to be a superpowered hospital.
Let him tell her about the hospital, but not where necessarily. Give her a phone number or something.
Stop him, the boss hasn't okayed it yet. Maybe he wanted to tell them later.

Hey at least it's not armsmaster, things work immediately go tits up

Can't disclose too much before we know we can trust the prt to not raze it, but they should know something so that they don't immediately believe that we are villains kidnapping hurt capes.

Militia is smart enough to consider us a business partner, I think.

They can't raid the pocket dimension if we close it off then open it back up somewhere else.

"What do you mean?"

Louis puts a shit eating grin on his face, posing in a way that he probably thinks makes him look "Heroic." "Well it's simple my friend, each and every one of us is a medical professional. Not only that, but we have a medical thinker and a pocket dimension to hide away in. So naturally, we were planning to play to our strengths." Louis laughs and looks as realisation begins to dawn on Miss Militia's face.

"You're-"

"Starting a Parahuman hospital, of course. Our leader believes that while we'd make good "capes" as you put it, it's better to heal than to harm, and we're better suited to it anyway. We'll give you a call when we're ready to begin taking patients.

"With all due respect, you don't look much like a doctor."

"Of course I don't, I'm a therapist. Now we really ought to be off. He grabs you by the hand and starts pulling you away and running back towards the Party Van. "We'll be seeing you darling, do be careful and try to understand when I say that I hope to see you very rarely! If you do need our help though, look for a bright red garage door in the garden District!"

You turn your head back as your companion pulls you around the corner, giggling like a maniac. You see Nancy shrug at Miss Militia, who had tensed up as you ran off, before teleporting over to you and following at a leisurely pace. It's not too long before you're back in the van, Louis bemoaning his lack of grappling hooks or smoke bombs.

"Preferably both, but I can make do with what I have."

Crazy motherfucker.

Well, this is it. Your first act of superheroism and you're not even there to watch it happen. Still, you don't think that you'd make for a very imposing hero, I mean next to Armsmaster what the fuck are you? Just some crazy homeless Jackass with a busted leg. At least the doc managed to fix your right one, so now you're just stuck with a crutch rather than a wheelchair.

You've been putting it off for a while now, but as the hospital's Director you'd feel weird if you didn't go and visit the only patient you even have in your weird mental construct hospital. There's something that keeps putting you off about it though. Like a feeling of disquiet that seems only to grow stronger as you approach the room he's in. You're used to doing things that make you uncomfortable though, so you would've pushed through it before now but...

It's the others too. Part of you wants to think that your job is actually that important, but ever since you said that you wanted to check on the patient there's always been something that they needed help with, some task that they just don't have the hands for, but they can't trust the Orderlies with.

They... they don't think there's something wrong with you do they?

You're you, you're Barnaby. You can handle things tactfully, you know you can. Maybe it's a danger thing. The Doctor said he was suffering from a drug overdose earlier, if he was anything like the Merchants you know then it's entirely possible that he might be dangerous. Still though, he also was unconscious so it should be alright to take a quick look.

Hell even if he's dangerous, this is YOUR mind, your dimension. Here you are king. Here you are in Control.
So why do you feel nauseous? Why does your stomach twist and churn with every step towards that room?

You take a quick left into a nearby bathroom. Looking into the mirror as you steady yourself and straighten the tie on your beige suit, piercing green eyes staring back at you from the mirror.

You tap your long fingers against the bowl of the sink as you gather yourself, crouched low to see yourself in the mirror as tendrils of darkness radiate from your stretched and unnatural form, a mouthless face stretched in grim parody of a smile.

You wipe away the black tar from the edge of your eye and take another pill, wincing as the hallucination recedes, your reflection in the mirror returning to normal.

Perfectly normal...

What were you doing?

Interlude End

I think I'll call it here for the night, but I'll be on tomorrow as well, probably about two o clock GMT.
>>
Wasn't expecting that twist at all. Great run and I positively can't wait to see how it develops from here. Am I correct to assume the patient is Barnaby and that we've just assumed the perspective of the Director thus far?
>>
>>2999657
Director is Barnaby's body double or astral projection or possessed construct. Unconscious Barnaby's brain/body keeps the pocket dimension alive and functional in the critical condition ward, while Barnaby-as-Director manages everything else. The generators are not only to improve and restore the pocket dimension, but to improve and restore regular Barnaby.

I still want to force the Director!Barnaby to the critical condition ward when we assume control of him again, see what that causes.

You stare into the mirror for a long while, your mind having gone blank as you desperately try to remember what you were doing before you came in... Eh it couldn't have been that important, or you would have remembered.

You're distracted from your musings as the Door opens and the Party Van comes back through, parking outside the entrance to accident and emergency. It's satisfying, being like this. Able to see and hear everything if you just zone out a little. The ones you sent out have returned, no patients but no injuries either and that's better than you'd expected for their first proper sojourn into Brockton Bay as capes. Maybe you should go say hello, debrief them and so on?

You open the bathroom door, leading you out into the hospital building's reception area as they come through, The Therapist gingerly patting at his ribs as he does so. You lead them through the gift shop and into the second floor cafeteria, flexing your metaphorical power muscles as you bring them through and smiling smugly to yourself. This power really is something else.

A quick debrief with Nancy conveys all the relevant details as the Doctor fusses over The Therapist's wound. checking his ribs for fractures as you go through the events of earlier today.

"It's understandable that she might be somewhat intimidated, we're hardly the most personable looking lot." The Doctor says, handing your lightning lecturer a cold compress. "Although Louis' charming personality certainly seemed to help with that."

"Of course it did, I have to be good at talking to people. It's kind of my job. I know some might find it shocking though"

You dread to think what might have happened had you just sent Nurse and The Observer. You'd rather not have this first meeting ruined by your disorders' physical quirks.

It's the afternoon by the time that you and the others are done going over the situation, but there's still time in the day to get some more stuff done. The most pressing issue is how you're going to maintain contact with the outside world. The TV's and radios in the hospital still work, but they only show reruns of old 60's shows and some old Earth Aleph cartoon about a cape with spider powers. It's pretty good to watch, but you need news access. And preferably a phone.

>Give an orderly a phone and have him wait in the real abandoned hospital all day, it's not like they can get bored.
>Have the Engineer rig something up. You'll need to find parts somewhere, but apart from that you should be good.
>Maybe you have another idea?

"Ya want me to steal cable for you? Really boss?" Your technology specialist has been somewhat grumpy for a while now ever since the quarantine went up around his shack, no doubt exacerbated by having to sleep on the incredibly uncomfortable Orderly beds. "Ah'm meant to be creatin' techno-logical mahvels here, and you want me to fix your fuckin' Broadband?"

"Don't be difficult Clancy, we need a way of making contact with the outside world, and if anyone can do it here it's you. Not to mention that if we find out about stuff happening after it's finished, then we might not get there in time to make a difference." Seeing him suitably chastened, you continue. "I need eyes on the outside, and the Orderlies can't be everywhere."

He stands up, joints popping as he stretches up from his reclined position. "Okay boss, going to need some more parts though. I've got a few ideas, but I can't make something from nothing."

"That might complicate the situation, we've plenty of chemical supplies but electronics isn't anyone here's forte. It isn't like money or drugs where we can just take them from the Merchants."

"Sorry boss, don't know what else to tell you"

"It's not your fault that my power has weird rules, we'll use it as a learning exercise."

For the moment you'll make do with a low tech solution, have an orderly with a burner phone.
Get going while the going's good. Maybe if you can grab enough money from a gang you might be able to set up the tinkertech you need.

Shit's been dead recently because Void literally just got back from surviving LEGAL BULLSHIT, and at some point since he's been back has disappeared again.
Granted it's only been like 6 days since his post in >>3001652, but with his track record of life trying to end him it's kind of a guessing game at this point.
