Long has it been since the fall of mankind, with scant remnants forced to scavenge upon the verdant surface or cower within pitiful holes of machinery, save for one woman, chemically-enhanced, rebel of the cloistered Arcology, freedom-lover, warrior-woman, the one called Shasta!

Attacked while in attendance to the grevious wounds of her loyal panther Nali, Shasta found herself waylaid and bound, to awaken in a prison-carriage bound for a strange mine - stranger still, for in this overgrown world such endeavors are hardly possible!
>>
With cunning unbound by rope or pole, escape was soon had, and Shasta tasted once more the air of freedom, alongside the jungle waif Rin, for the girl was the last of her tribe, now wholly kept in forcible labor to the slavers of the mine!

Yet freedom is fleeting in this most hostile of worlds, and Shasta had yet to turn before she found herself menaced by a monstrous inhabitant of the endless jungle! No sessile presence, this, but a terrifyingly intelligent behemoth, it threatened ingurgitation to both woman and girl!
>>
As Shasta gleefully embroiled herself in the hot rush of battle, other freakish denizens made their presence known, seeking to make a meal of the adolescent girl! Panic drove the girl deeper into the jungle, where surrounded by chittering horrors she inadvertently came upon a fantastic discovery!
>>
Beneath their very feet lay a counterpart to Shasta's own home in this far country, yet from the first they found it strangely deserted of the living.

No shortage, however, did they find of the dead, victims of some terrible plague, for as they passed from corridor to corridor no trace of life could be found in the sterile catacombs.

No sooner did the three separate that the stillness of the crypt-city was broken, for as the interlopers soon learned, something had survived the plague.

"Aaah! Help!"

Rin backs against the doorway, kicking and cringing as a blind scuttling dwarf with half a cranium bulging from the crooked hunch weighting down one shoulder like a hillock of pale and veiny flesh rakes its talons and snaps broken, jagged teeth, tossing acrid spittle from its blood-caked mouth!

"Blut! Ich will dieses süße, leckere Blut!"

Across the paneled corridor, Nali writhes and shrieks, her claws unable to tear free of the synthetic-spun netting which binds her ever-more tightly with each straining sinew's twist!

>Send Rin on her own to get a weapon and guard her retreat
>Throw Rin your sword and fight bare-handed

"Blut! Ich werde mit seinem Körper einen Blutbrunnen machen!"

The giant's mangled feet pound across the stone floor as it roars its incomprehensible obscenities, and it raises high the terrible club of bone to smash the beautiful form above which it towers, but ever-clever Shasta has correctly deduced that these things, debased from the tree of Man as they are, sense her movements in some manner, and so as the thing's scarred and sinewey limbs lurch across its weapon's deadly path-

-Shasta drops her body low and arches her body from toe-tip to scalp, nimble as a dancer, beneath the path of her expected demise, and the confused gnarled thing above her has little choice but to continue behind the force of its tremendous ground-shattering blow!

Before the monstrous figure can comprehend its own demise, keenly-honed metal bisects it utterly as Shasta flips her perfect torso in a leaping spin, sending the giant tumbling to the ground in twain!

Even her famed sword can do little to slice free those fetters from within which the panther struggles feebly, so entwined within itself is the net, and as she saws at the cords with renewed vigor, again she hears Rin cry out, nearly past the range of Shasta's magnificent hearing!

"Rin! Oh, why won't this-"

At last catches the blade of her great sword upon the engineered fibers of the netting, and she feels it loosen around the panther even as the beast shrugs free of its confinement!

Desperate to save the girl from an unknown fate, yet not yet foolhardy enough to charge blindly down darkened passageways, Shasta retreats to the last chamber passed along Nali's frenzied chase. "Come, Nali," Shasta intones in a voice barely a whisper, as the strips of synthetic uniform crackly briskly above her head. "I will lead the way."

And so down into the darkness they travel, and down indeed, for by Shasta's keen reckoning of such things, their path dips and slopes farther and farther down in an arthritic spiral, until she is certain that they must soon hit bedrock.
>>
There is a point at last when the darkness somehow gives way, parting to reveal an even more incredible immersion of endless night, an overwhelmingly oppressive blackness, a void which through anyone who dares breach must drift, for the ground is so black as to be unreal, and Shasta's inerrable senses know that they now stand at the crack of some giant canyon nestled beneath a hundred billion tons of stone.

The words thunder in the center of her head, behind her beautiful limpid eyes and between her ears, and though the gargantuan, bloated cranium that seems to float in the darkness ahead of her, ringed with courtiers of the same degenerate breed encountered on the far side of this endless darkness vocalizes in garbled, choking gasps that same strange language, Shasta feels the thing digging fingers through her brain, forcing her to comprehend its bizarre words!

As she draws closer, lured by the mewling form which flickers in the torchlight from a wrought metal cage high above the cult, she sees the immense head does not truly float, but is supported somehow by the puny frame of a withered and armless form of twisted though no doubt human descent!

"And you're the one who took that girl. Give her back to us, and we will leave your home."

"Du verstehst nicht, Frau von der Oberfläche. Das Mädchen wurde hierher gebracht, um dich hierher zu bringen."

You do not understand, woman from the surface. The girl was brought here to bring you here.

"Bring me here? What do you want with me, besides my sword through your corpulent skull?" taunts Shasta as she grips her sword tightly and turns the blade outward to follow her words.

"What will happen to them?" questions Rin as she darts beyond the hungrily questing perennial to attend the woman's side.

"I think we could all use a rest," says Shasta at last, having finished pondering the weight of their speedy travel against the lodestone of exhaustion. "And some food will do us good. Go and fetch some fruit while I light a fire," she commands, while to their side nary a disturbance is seen as the great panther's tail slips into the vegetation surrounding them.

Her life and freedom saved again and again by Shasta, the maiden hurries to occupy well the brief responsibility crowned upon her, and finds to her delight clutches of lush and swollen berries dripping down to hardly beyond arm's reach! Eagerly she grasps a handful each and shivers in the misting air driven to the lowland by the coming sun.
>>
As the girl plucks their fill from the inexhaustible bounty of the jungle, the warrior-woman gathers up what few remaining sticks remain unscathed of sodden rainfall, no doubt drawn by the unnatural storm of the previous night. Drawing both steel and flint from a cunningly-sewn fold hidden in her most meager of attire, Shasta quickly kindles her second fire of the pre-dawn morning, sending a gentle breath through lips full and succulent as that of the fruit which Rin pulls from above.
>>
"That smells amazing!" marvels the girl as the hare's sizzling flesh wafts a delectable odor across the overgrowth clearing.

"You!" shouts the woman. "You should be grateful for your role to come! I have finally found the answer to the problem which has driven our species to the edge of extinction! But now... I need test subjects."

"Test subjects? You're mad!" Shasta laughs, though within her there is fear for as she covertly struggles to free herself she finds the cords unyielding!

"Not mad, and no more planning," the woman says, and in the dim recess of the wrecked building's highest space something shudders and tilts glistening into the morning light.

"Today will be the conception of a new race of mankind!" proclaims the hooded woman in a voice swelling with pride as she sweeps a gloved hand upward to where descends a gargantuan plant, raised in the captive space of this makeshift laboratory, and as its fronds uncurl in the warming air Shasta's eyes are drawn to a protruding feature which seems to swell even before her eyes!

The bloated protuberance swells again as a breeze of warm air wafts over its leaves, barbed fronds extending to trail strands of clear ichor, taffy-like, all along its trunk, and beneath it, squarely in the path of drizzling excess which coats the worked stone floor with a dribbling rivulet, Shasta renews her efforts to snap the well-woven cords!

Wood creaks, flesh draws itself red and raw, yet no quarter do the bonds allow, and Shasta sees no way to free herself save the intervention of another!

I guess I should put in my usual pitch since this is a good place to do it

If you want to read more Lego Quest, most of the past eight-plus years of episodes are archived along with all the images on suptg:

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=lego%20quest

The official Lego Quest wiki has writeups for most people, places, and things in the Lego Quest universe, and will soon have a page for Shasta as well

And if you're on twitter you can get a notice whenever a new game starts or a current one resumes:
@EndmanOfFuturon

Goodnight!

As the vine lowers and the girl along with it, Rin's young eyes watch as before her rough stone walls give way to strange made things of the before people. Shasta's eyes are quick to acclimate to the gloom of the buried ruin, and as she alights to the floor and locks eyes with the girl the query comes in a tone of half-reverence, for until a single day past, Rin has seen only matted remains of glories coated in green and strangling life. "Upsiders!" shouts the stranger as she propels herself along the top of a lengthy and narrow seat and off the other side, nimbly spinning about her head a strange blunt polearm twinned by another strapped to her lean back as she does. The plaza returns to undisturbed silence where little stirs save for the vine's occasional twitch, and the single beam of wan light from the slash far above the plaza drifts eastward to almost a sliver before voices are heard again.

"What's the use?" Rin asks sullenly, wiping sweat-matted hair from her brow. "This place doesn't end!"

The voice which responds steels itself against the unease which rides upon its mistress, for as each time thoughts return to her faithful panther, the sensation as though she were falling off a cliff redoubles. "There is still a bit of daylight left. We may find the witch's desire and save Nali yet."

The plight of her village enslaved is far from the girl's mind, and poisoned Nali as well, so overwhelmed is she by the multitudinous artifacts both unaccountable and alien through which they must now sift.

"What are those?" asks she, hesitant to enter the shop where on walls painted angry stripes of red and black hang strange shapes like oblong clubs festooned with glinting ornaments and behind them, farther into the shadows, rest squat looming boxes nearly the size of the girl, set in with round depressions.

Still they walk, and in passing a dust-rimed window so wide Rin is baffled that the space has not collapsed upon itself, the girl spies beyond the glass a pair of small and shiny things, mirrored in form. "What are those?"

Shasta glances to the pedestal beyond back again to the rolling native guide before her. "Shoes."

"For your feet? But they don't look like you can walk with them!"

"They weren't made to be easy to walk in," comes the enigmatic response.

"Shasta?" calls a voice, distant and echoing as if from across a vast canyon, and Shasta feels numb limbs begin to stir.
>>
"Shasta, are you awake?"

"Rin?" Shasta ventures, for uncertain is she at this moment of the name which lends itself to the face before her! "Did we sneak inside?"

As Shasta draws herself to shaking feet and finds herself bound to Rin by their iron collars, the very woman who waylaid her parts the crowd of kidnapped laborers and gestures at the pair with a crudely-lacquered baton!

"You there! If you're awake, get working! Follow those other slaves into the mine!"
>>
"I am slave to no one!" shouts the warrior-woman, defiant even in chains!
>>
"If you won't work, I'll take it out on this one!" the slaver laughs, drawing a cry of surprise and pain as she cuffs Rin's jaw with the baton.

At the sight of Rin imperiled does Shasta's blood rise, and though the chain which binds the two is made short to encumber and hinder escape, for one such as she it offers instead a means of escape, so leap she does quicker than the guard can react, and quicker still does she grasp both her own short lead and Rin's as well, straining them together around the thick neck of the guard-woman!

>This, I never liked how we didn't just beat the witch into curing Nali on the spot.
Anon I have to be honest, I am still getting used to the format of running a game on /qst/ instead of /tg/. I was in the habit of ending every night as a cliffhanger, because the end of the night usually meant the thread was done. The next day when I woke up and re-read that part I kicked myself for not just pausing and resuming in some way that didn't involve a forced fetch quest, which turned out to be an additional annoyance for me because my obsessiveness with a bunch of details in the mall I made myself build on the spot ended up eating most of the days when the thread could be bumped with actiony stuff. That said, I did have fun making up the patois for the mall people.

I think I'm going to take tonight to clean up the huge pile of pieces directly to the left of camera and get some more stuff assembled (hopefully) but the new thread should be up by Friday at the latest.

Thanks again everybody!
