“Come on, keep it moving! Higher steps!” As Lysan runs up and down the set of stairs, you and Nerisa are both keeping an eye on him. You hadn’t said why you’d taken an interest in his physical health, and she hadn’t asked, and so the both of you had decided to put him through his paces.

Lysan’s too busy panting, but you can swear he’s trying to say something along the lines of ‘I regret everything.’

He really should save that breath for more exercises.

Greetings, impromptu trainers! And welcome back to Magical Girl for Hire! Currently, you're on a mission as a kid's summons to help him pass his final exam so that he can become a full summoner. You're currently known as Kyria, a triple eyed, fairy-like summon constantly expounding magical energy, and you've learned that, should he attempt to continue and win his final Exam, the Test of Might, his life may be in danger.

So, you’ve decided to give him a bit of training...

Sadly...the kid really needs to get out more. He nearly trips badly on the next trip up, and as he collects himself, Nerisa is going up to help him out. “Okay, okay, time to call it done. You’re about to pass out. Here.” She hands him a water bottle that she’d brought along for him- one of a couple, actually.

He takes it and gulps freely, downing nearly half the bottle in one go. “Phew...thanks.” He’s dripping with sweat, but he at least smiles at her. “I...think I did okay?”

“There’s definitely room to grow, but not bad for day one, no. I’m hoping in the next couple of weeks you get double this number of reps, though!” The way he flinches at that tells his opinion of that without speaking, and Nerisa just chuckles and pats his shoulder as a response. “No way I’m letting you get flabby on my watch!”

“Hey, I’m...not flabby...am I?” He’s still breathing hard, but at least he can joke a bit.
“Well, you can’t lift weights, that’s for sure!” she says good naturedly. The kid was crap at that and had no muscle to really speak of. Which you suppose makes sense. The one other thing that he seemed to be alright at was strategic thinking. He...wasn’t a genius, but he at least thought of ways to fight something other than ‘charge at the opponent and hope for the best’, which was a plus in your book.

And speaking of that...you still have those books from the bookstore. In particular, the two that you found yourself. You’d kept them on your person via your bag, but you might be able to get him to utilize one of them…

The boy is amazing with mana and stuff; this might come easier to him than the other option.

Also, would we try to cure his tiredness with our magic hands?

He seem to have a terrible time with that. Even if we don't know how he managed to break the summoning orb.

I think our magic is more to cure wounds and not stamina drain. But we can always try.

Also i recall that there was something inside the Rend the Beyond. Because Miranda could feel the front of the book was heavyer

So is weapon training part of what we’re teaching him, or are summons supposed to worry about that in this dimension?
>>
>>2965844
From the last thread:

>...“You only have a few days left with me, so I can’t expect you to get much stronger physically, but I can at least start you on theory and tactics along with basic calisthenics with Nerisa. And I mean start NOW.”

So we don't have enough time to give him a proper trainning. Also yes summons are usually the ones that worry about that but i guess soldiers still need to do soldier stuff.
>>
>>2965873
No real reason not to go over the basics with him, though, maybe we can teach him a couple of pointers in case Marcus decides to be a prick?
>>
>>2965896
i think it would overload the boy with to much information. Don't forget he still needs to keep up with his other trials.

“He may not need to very much,” you speak up. Both them look at you with curious expressions as you reach inside your draw bag and pull out one of the books from the other day. “This might help you come the day of the tournament...and beyond that, even.”

Lysan squints at the title. “Huh...say, didn’t you get that from the bookstore? Is it rare?”

You nod as you hand it over to him. “It’s not the rarity that makes it interesting, though. Take a look at a few chapters of this. It seems to be an in-depth explanation on just how the summoning process works...and how best to control that energy. Directly.”

“Directly?” He goggles, as does Nerisa, as they both look at you. “But that’s impossible...the Stream is too volatile to use it for more than a few moments…”

You shake your head. "Not according to that book. And if it IS accurate, then chances are I can give you some pointers, as well as some exercises to improve that control."

Nodding, he starts flipping through the book, Nerisa leaning over his shoulder to read as well. Their mouths go slack-jawed before a few minutes, with even Nerisa imploring him to ‘skip ahead a few chapters’ in order to confirm or deny a ‘dream of hers’. Lysan takes to muttering to himself here and there, but doesn’t say anything until the sun dips over the horizon, the two of them realizing how late it is only when they can’t see well anymore.

Nerisa quickly takes him into a one-armed hug before saying her farewells, leaving him a tired, but flushing, mess. “Sooo…” he starts, turning to you once she’s out of sight. “Tomorrow’s a day off.”

Right, you recall that. “Yes?”

“Me and my folks were planning on making it a day out. There’s an event tomorrow that they want me to go with them to- apparently some kind of traveling festival or something. They don’t usually come this way, so it’s a rare opportunity. You’re free to come if you want, but I got the feeling festivals might not be your thing…”

We are not Lori we don't seduce clients. And randa already has the cook boy in the intercetion as a possible love interest.
>>
>>2969404
Yeah. I've been reading for a while now so I think I'm qualified to say that Miranda needs some romance in her life.
>>
>>2969346
Are you sure about that? I’m not against bringing Lyme Disease back to the Intersection, if that’s what you were going for. He’d make a pretty good part time assistant for Owlia. But seducing him seems a little out of Miranda’s wheelhouse and motivations. Offering him the chance to join SES, however...

>>2969462

>>
>>2969604
The Cook was a fun and interesting character, I don't know why people are so adverse to romance in this quest.

It makes for a good challenge for the players since Miranda is powerful enough to steamroll most combat situations if it weren't for the limits placed on her by the clients.
>>
>>2969737
because we have limited time on the intersection and that time can be used on more useful things or more meaningful interactions
>>

And we are. We used the sticky mana to fix the orb. We arent using the other abilities because we don't have a reason to.
>>
>>2969737
The cook was interesting.
That doesn't mean he's likable, or anyone I want to actually become involved with.
>>
>>2969737
The cook's annoying. If there was one character I prefer to not have to deal with, it's him.
>>
>>2969737
While romance itself isn't a bad thing, I haven't seen even one male character interesting enough for Miranda to choose from.
>>
>>2969737
He's an obnoxious child, and is about as far away from someone randa would willingly hang around as possible.

Miranda's entire thing is being a money focused merc. Her time at the Intersection is just a break between jobs. She has no interest in romance.

Romance in quests has a nasty habit of string up unending shitstorms. You want to spend the rest of the quest arguing over which imaginary person to fuck, instead of, you know, missions and such? Because that's what romance in quets does.
>>
>>2969737
>newfag
>namefag
>hey lets do this thing completely different from what the quest has been up to this point, because I just caught up, and it's what I want

Also, not everyone likes romance in quests, and it's incredibly difficult to find one without it. If you want romance in a quest, it's not like it's hard to find. Go elsewhere for it.
>>
>>2969737
>romance
I'm more interested in saving money by getting free food for sparring with him. Being friends is enough.

“No, I’ll go with you,” you decide. It’s too risky to leave him alone. Besides… “I do believe I’ve yet to meet your parents.”

The look on his face at THAT...well, you won’t say you didn’t want to laugh. “Oh geez. I completely forgot about that. I don’t think I’ve even really told them much about you aside from…” Pausing briefly, he tries to think before just blushing and shrugs. “...well, you’re not as mean as you look?”

Excuse him? ...Well, okay, you DO look pretty mean.

Nonetheless, you follow him back, and after a bit of dinner (and you giving him the cold shoulder just to see his reaction), the two of you fall asleep.

The next day, you find yourself headed up a hill in the city, and you’re noticing that the houses and other buildings are getting more and more ostentatious… “My folks aren’t much further,” he explains. “Just up to where we level out and then it’s right down the street.” He’s even panting a bit at this- better not be regretting those exercises now…

It’s when you get to his doorstep that you realize…your (and Lorelei’s) suspicions about him were spot on. This kid’s loaded...or at least his parents are, judging by the opulence of his house. Three stories of rich white stone, a garage with a an antique car (although it’s probably modern for them), even a sizeable front lawn… “So this is your house?” He nods.

As he goes up the steps, he sighs. “Just be careful, okay? My family can get...weird.” As though resigning himself, he knocks.

You just raise an eyebrow. “Weird? Weird ho-”

And immediately, you see the door flung open and a slender hand reach out and snatch Lysan up, bringing him into the crushing embrace of what looks like an older girl. Long haired, with a slate grey dress and heels, and you can catch a flash of metal on her chest as Lysan’s body is practically flung around amidst his squawks of protest. “Lyrebird! I can’t BELIEVE I nearly missed you!” Who…?

>>
>>2970233
“-gack-, wait, Milly! You’re...doing it again!” At those stressed out words, she gasps, dropping him entirely.

“Oh, geez, I’m so sorry! But I wouldn’t have been able to see you if you’d shown up even, like, an hour later! You know I can’t stick around very long these days! I’d have had to wait until the weekend!”

“R-right…” He opens his mouth to speak again-

-Before a yelp from the lady has him being dragged back into the house as she puts herself between him and yourself. “Hey! Whoa, back off! Who’s your summoner!? Where’d you come from!? Why are you here!?”

“Him, beyond, and to accompany him to an event he informed me about,” you explain casually.

“...wha?” Before she can get out of her confused stupor, Lysan manages to yank himself out from behind her.

“Yeah!” He huffs, looking between you and the girl. “Sorry about all this, Kyria. I didn’t think she’d be here. Although I guess ‘family’ outing would include her...anyway, Kyria, this is Millicent, my older sister. Milly, this is Kyria, my summon.”

For a few seconds, she flits her eyes between you and him, pure disbelief on her face. “Uhhhh...no?” She looks at him confusedly as he gapes. “Lyar-liar, you don’t have that kinda juice. I’ve known you for literally ever, and you just don’t. I mean, unless she WANTED to be summoned, but there’s no way you managed to pluck her, you know that, right? She’s TOTALLY using you for something.” And at that she fixes a worried, yet protective eye on you as she frowns. “They always are. So spill it or you might as well bail. I’ve got enough on my plate as it is, I don’t need some would-be puppeteer queen messing with my little brother.”

Huh...this again. It’s getting old.

Lysan tries to speak up again. “Seriously, she’s been helping me all this time, even saved me from a robbery! She’s not some evil warlord that everyone seems to think she is!”

“And what do you think she is?” she asks without breaking her stare at you. “There’s been more than a few malicious summons willing to play the long game. So what are you after?”

“Hmph.” Well, she’s just plain nosy. And while you’re generally not averse to stating why you’re here, generally things go smoother when the only people who know what you’re about are the people that asked for you. Still...shouldn’t be too hard to spin this well enough. “If I said ‘money’, would that satisfy you?”

She scoffs, to your vague surprise. “Money? What would a summon care about money for?”

You shrug. “I always enjoyed money, this boy seems like he has access to a lot OF it. Figured it worth my chances.” It’s not even entirely false. “So there you have it.”

She blinks once, and then turns to Lysan, disapproval blatant in her expression. “How in the WORLD did you manage to attract the attention of a summon that wants money?!” The blaze in her eyes does little to mask the worry on her face. “Do you know how CLOSE that is to illegal? You’re just lucky you didn’t ask first and offer a sacrifice!” He blanches, and you have to admit your curiosity is piqued. The ad DID mention it was illegal...so that’s how so. But those implications ARE concerning. Before you can question it, however, she turns back to you. “Look, just HOW long are you planning on stringing him along?”

“Until the exams are over with,” you answer primly. “He mentioned he needed help with those, so I agreed to that.”

Lysan’s quick to put his hands over hers in an attempt to calm her down. “Seriously, Milly, she hasn’t hurt anyone who hasn’t ran up and asked for it, I swear. She’s even taken pains to not antagonise anyone. If she IS playing a long con- and I don’t think she is- I don’t think it has much of anything to do with us or anyone else we know.”

She lets loose a little growl, before huffing and throwing up her hands. “Fine! Fine…but if anything happens, I’m calling down the ENTIRE department!” Department?

“Mom! Dad!” she turns to call inside the house. “Lyly’s here! And he...brought his summon.” She grinds out the last few words, clearly still unenthused. Sighing, she turns to you with a grimace. “Come on in...I guess. Mom and Dad will be ready in a bit. You know how they are.”

“Yeah, I do. She’s FINE, Milly, I’m telling you...” he comments as you head inside.

In a few moments, you’re all sitting in a well-lit living room, consisting of a very nice red velvet plush couch and two equally plush seats on either side. Millicent is in one seat, while you and Lysan are on the couch, with Millicent...well, doing her level best to not outright glare at you. Even so, you can tell she’s nervous- her eyes flicker to meet yours whenever you look at her, but her leg has a hard time not bouncing, and a few subtle cues- licking lips, twitchy fingers- give her away.

“So...how’s work?” Lysan ventures first.

“Okay,” she offers. “Had to inspect a few folks recently. Got an unlicensed alchemic practitioner. Helped the guard find out a guy who was trying to extort from a local business.” She doesn’t say much else, folding her arms.

“Ah...yeah. I’ve been working on the exam, thanks to...yeah.” Lysan’s attempt at conversation dies in his throat once he realizes the potential landmine.

“Hm.” Great.

Well, that’s between them. You’ve told them what you’re here for, so frankly she’s just going to have to accept it.

It’s with that in mind that you ignore the tension in the room for the next few minutes, before Millicent finally speaks up- although not to you. “Mom! Dad! Where are you?”

“We’ll be down in just a second, hun!” Comes a male shout. Before much longer you hear steps. “Alright, who’s ready for a fun day out- OH MY…”

Aaand here we go again.

“She’s under watch, guys,” Millie says begrudgingly to her cowering parents. “Ly here pulled a bonehead stunt, but she’s...passive, for now.”

“I, uh...if you’re sure, sweetheart,” comes the shivering voice of their mother- a slightly chubby, brown-haired woman with a neat bun and dressed in cloth pants and a shirt with a draped shawl. “And she’s yours, Lysan?”

He nods as he stands up to hug the both of them. “Yeah, mom. I promise, she hasn’t done a thing to hurt me.”

“Yet.” The lot of them turn to Millie as she scowls. “He went and managed to find a summon that wants money in exchange. And the idiot didn’t say no off the bat.”

“Well, I mean, we’re not exactly wanting, are we?” He says impetuously. You two are some of the most important people in the city! And she’s been a lot of help so far! She’ll help me win the Test of Might no problem!”

Millie hmphs, while his parents just sigh.

“Even if that ends up coming to pass, that doesn’t mean we’re simply MADE of money, dear,” his mother frowns, then looks at you- and quickly breaks eye contact. “Depending on how much she wants, she may want to take her leave sooner than later…”

Hahaha, no-

“Dunno if I’d recommend that...” Millie mutters, to your surprise.

“Mooooom...can we please talk about this AFTER we get back?” Lysan whines. It’s surprisingly effective, and the two nod after a moment.

But not before, of course, they fix him with a level stare. “Just know that we WILL have a long talk, alright? Now then. Miss…”

“Kyria, and you at least don't need to worry. I intend to accomplish what Lysan has claimed.” you say evenly. These two better not get in the way of your payday…

“...Kyria, then. If Lysan wants you along, then you’re welcome so long as you stay out of trouble.” Like you haven’t heard that a million times by now. “Come along! The Shooting Star Carnival is waiting!”

The ride to the carnival is fairly smooth, although it’s a bit of a tight fight with the three of you in the back. Millie keeps a very close eye on you, but you keep silent for the trip. To your surprise, after about a half-hour, you find yourself approaching what you can assume to be the city limits, as the buildings get sparser and there’s more mountainous area and treeland. That’d probably explain why trading wasn’t common, if you’re on a mountain range.

After passing a treeline and a few small farm areas, you finally make it to an area that’s been cleared out, and currently residing there is a cornucopia of sights, smells, and sounds in what seems like some sort of circus/carnival area. Rings of games and various attractions staffed by human and summon alike, all cajoling and howling for the passersby to try their luck, and in the center is a giant circus tent. There’s a multitude of individuals around and about enjoying the scenery, and laughter abounds as the vehicle finds a place to park in the makeshift dirt lot.

“Aaaaaand here we are!” Lysan’s father announces, the salt and pepper-haired man smiling widely. “I must say, last time I’ve been here must’ve been about...goodness, I’m pretty sure it was before Lysan was born!”

“At the very least,” Lysan’s mother confirms. “Looks like it’s gotten rather bigger over time!”

“Whoa!” Lysan, for his part, looks amazed, and Millicent just looks nostalgic. “Come on! Let’s check it out!”

“Hey, don’t get too far ahead of yourselves!” His father shouts as Lysan leaps out the back, his sister following him with a chortle. You just hum to yourself, watching them both as you casually climb out of the vehicle. Hope he can keep himself under control here…

The lot of you make it in with little issue, but, true to his desire, Lysan is walking around near stupefied- hasn’t been to any kind of carnival like this before, clearly. Even though you think he’s a little old for it, he’s got a real innocent wonder at all of the new and unusual sights and sounds. Old wizened folk telling tales from across the seas with the aid of summons for flair, old adventurers showing off strangely shaped goods and devices, various oddities and pictures and even animals from far off corners; little of it is for sale, all of it is to gaze and be amazed at.

Kinda reminds you of home a bit. Except for the nervous looks as you walk through the crowds, occasionally a number of people parting like a wake before you.

>>2971481
Suddenly, someone comes out from between the various stalls, clearly in a rush- there’s a moment’s shock on his part, before he slams into Lysan, and with a shout, the two of them are sprawled on the ground, amidst a number of concerned onlookers, yourself included. As you quickly move to get the man off the boy and help your charge up, you can see that the man has a number of bandages on his arms and around his lower face, obscuring it entirely and only allowing you to see his nose and eyes. He’s wearing a dusty old vest and ratted pants, and was carrying a large sack, but he’s clearly a tall sort, lean and with wiry muscle. Pulling himself and his cargo up, he squints at the boy, before growling. “Watch where you’re going, kid.”

Lysan shakes his head, but looks up to the man apologetically. “Oh, uh, sorry about that, it’s my first time coming to one of the-”

“Save it. Just keep your head on next time.” Saying little else, he walks away, to the glares of the people around him as he stalks off.

“Ugh. Rude,” Millie remarks. “Wonder what’s bugging him.”

>>

Yeah, that could be it too. When the people at the club told us to fail the test of might we didn't immediately agree so they're probably going to try something at some point.
>>
>>2971484
Tell Millie to send her summon after that guy, tail him. We need to check Lice-boy so he didn't get fleeced or bugged.

>>
>>2972725
Millie's not going to do what we ask, she's already incredibly suspicious of us,

That is something we could look into after this job though: some sort of small bug we could buy / make a spell for to one someone to track people or things.
>>
>>2972750
Doesn't matter if she listens or not. At least we've taken initiative and show them that we take our duty seriously.

Her brother may have been mugged, if she is going to ignore it to spite us then that is a family problem. It costs us nothing to talk and running after that guy on our own is a bad decision
>>
Technical update on the rig. Last week was literally hell for me, but the body rig is done, as well as control box, i just need to connect said box to the face. On the other hand, this looks confusing as fuck at a first glance.
>>
OOOH! i get it now. That guy actually stealed Lysan's summoning orb.

Well thay could be a real problem.
>>
>>2974687
I think the orb is a little big for that. Does the orb need to be near the summoner to work properly anyway?
>>
>>2974687
It'll be funny when he sneaks in to the dorm at night and tries to order us to kill Lysander
>>
>>2974702
That... no. We don't need to fear assassins until after the Might test, according to the ones that gave us the warning in the first place.
Even if he did get the orb, he's likely just a normal pickpocket, and will just fence the thing.
>>
>>2974279

Yooo, looking good so far! And don't worry, I understand entirely what's going on in that picture.

Stupid question, but please tell me there'll be IK handles?
>>
>>2974771
Yeah. The body can be controlled by IK and FK at the same time. The small hair bangs as well as the cloth knots and the skirt are IK only while the pigtails are FK (but i'll try to convert them to IK since i remembered yesterday how to do a complex IK conection).
>>
>>2974694
The orb was Of enough size for Lysan to carry it on his satchel i believe. I could be wrong.

>>2974702
Was more worried about the fact that without the orb we are basicaly a illegal summon since we don't have proof of a bound with our summoner without it. Which would make us instantly make us fail the test.

That is assuming the guy even stoled something from Lysan. But in my mind the only thing of importance he carried with him was the summoning orb.
>>
>>2974788
I don't think Lysan had the orb with him. The thing was already too fragile from the get go, is basically useless because we don't need it and carrying with us would have no effect other than to risk it to break further.
>>
>>2974797
Fair enough. Then i don't know maybe the time we went to help we didn't focused and he grabbed our bag. Or he just planted something weird in Lysan's body.
>>
>>2974814
If he did anything, He'll have cut his purse or picked his pocket. Removing and walking off with his bag without him noticing would be much more difficult than just slipping a hand in his pocket.
>>
>>2974827
Well we are working with dice here. Also i'm assuming that this guy isn't just a ordinary guy as far as we know he could be a humanoid summon hidding his features.
>>
>>2971484
You weren’t sure, and frankly, you don’t care. You’re already near Lysan, checking him over for injury or otherwise. Although he’s clearly a bit annoyed, he’s otherwise fine, you think. Physically, at least. Millie and the rest of the family’s not far behind as he brushes off the last dirt on his clothing. “You alright, son?” His father asks. “Honestly, the nerve of some people…”

“I’m fine, dad...don’t worry about it. Let’s just go and have fun!” True to his words, he doesn’t look too out of it, at least. Even so...as paranoid as it might be, you devote that man’s face to memory. If he showed up again, it might mean something…

“Alright, alright,” his mother smiles softly. “We’ve got a lot to choose from, I think, although the main event in the big tent doesn’t start for a bit, so where do you want to go first?”

The area he eventually picks is the-

Tent of Oddities display; the strange, green and purple colored tent seems rather starkly colored, and the old and tattered banners and cloth that wave from the tentpoles give it a rather peculiar air...sinister doesn’t quite work, but you suppose that’s the intention. You’ve got to admit, you wonder just would could be classified as an ‘oddity’ in a world where there’s seagreen flying eels with six eyes and a spider mouth. His parents had begged off, although Millie elected to stay with you- despite her clear dislike for the subject.

The inside is strangely foggy- not to mention empty- and you have to figure that there’s something making it happen, but the decor isn’t the important bit. Like some sort of macabre museum exhibit, there’s a variety of frozen bodies of creatures on display, in what looks like amber, crystals, frozen bubbles…all in various, stilled states of distress and pain, as though they’re still being affected by whatever it was that caused it in the first place. To your astonishment, you can see even what looks like humanoids in the far corner- there is something that is VERY obviously a elfen creature that seems to be quite literally frozen mid-dismemberment, considering how one of this arms is split cleanly from his body by a few centimeters, still clutching an axe. His face is a rictus of both pain and defiance. That’s only the first- there’s a line of five, all of them in various near-death states.

Aside from that, there’s a number of strange, bejeweled stone masks and carvings; one of a strange bug-face with inlaid gems for the eyes leaps out to your attention. There’s a head-sized carving that looks almost solid gold, with a picture of a too normal lion-face on the round, save for the x’d eyes…

“It is...interesting, yes?” You both turn around to find a tall, elderly man, bald and with heterochromic green and red eyes staring at you intently, but surprisingly fearless. He’s dressed in a sharp suit, and his high and weedy voice belies a stature that’s surprisingly healthy. “This is the resting place of the strange and unusual; the forgotten and unwanted. Legends, artifacts, tales from before...a time of utter chaos...madness so deep that even those that were there cannot recall it.” He breaks his gaze, looking at Lysan. “Few so young dare to venture in here.”

>>2978419

“Yeah, he’s kind of a weird dish himself,” Millie snarks. “But seriously, you really think you’re gonna hook anyone with these fakes?”

The man gives her a sardonic smile. “Fakes, hm? And who might be the owner of these...discerning eyes?” You’re certain he was being sarcastic.

“I’m Millicent. Just following my little brother around,” she deflects.

“Ahhh, I see. Good and dutiful. And what of you?” He asks, turning to you. “Quite the...mysterious soul you have, eh, dear summon? Strong. Vibrant. Unusual...” He leans closer, as though trying to inspect you...

You find yourself tilting your head in curiosity- and not a bit of concern. “Aaand...who might you be, again?”

He grins, still not breaking eye contact. “Ahh, forgive my lack of...manners. I am Rackhan, a... collector, of sorts. I consider it my duty in life to...observe the strange and unique of the world. Examine it. And if it proves intriguing enough...to keep it. For purposes of...preservation, you understand.” He straightens back up, the smile on his face a touch smaller, but still there. “This world’s history is quite fascinating, and...murky. What you see here is only a sampling of my discoveries- many I keep to myself elsewhere. However, such a venue allows me to display what I have found, and I have discovered that...like attracts like, in a way.”

Lysan, for his part, seems both creeped out and overawed. You, on the other hand, are mostly just suspicious. Letting yourself breathe in momentarily, you expand your senses, aimed directly at him-

-the cough that breaks out of you makes your heart jump a bit, and all three present raise an eyebrow, Lysan in particular looking concerned. “Hey, Kyria, you okay?”

“Fine,” you quickly offer as you get yourself back under control. It’s...a bit worse than you expected- you certainly weren’t expecting a garbage smell from him, and you’d think it apt in more ways than one if you were a mind to joke. Still...you’ve smelled worse, but at least you know that whoever this individual is, he’s someone to be cautious around. “Blame the fog.”

The strange man chuckles, his wizened face crinkling up a bit. “Of course, the atmosphere here can be a touch...disorienting, for human and summon alike. Tell you what. Feel free to take a look around our lovely little festival; avail yourself of the sights, the sounds- I am all too aware of the desire to experience that which is rare and unusual. I’ll be here for quite a while, should your interest pulls you back, hm?”

“Well, I mean, I guess I could…” Lysan demurres. “Was kinda hoping to ask about that clay statue, though. The weird one with four eyes.” He points down the table to what indeed looks like a black stone sculpture- a strange thing. Bipedal, with two thick arms, and wide-waisted to the point that it appears like a triangle makes its body. Four eyes arranged in a diamond formation and beetle-like horns protruding from the crown of its skull make up its head. The statue has been worn somewhat smooth by time, but there are grooves and cracks in it that tell that it was once rather detailed.

To yours (and Millie’s) discomfort, the old man actually LAUGHS, a thin, reedy thing. “Oho! A sharp eye on this boy, no doubt. Yes, that...well, that’s an intriguing little trinket to men of curiosity like you and I. Ah, but that is a long tale, and I fear your fascinating summon and stalwart sister may grow more agitated were I to keep you.” He makes a gentle pushing motion towards the door. “Go. Experience. As I said...I’ve quite the amount of time on my hands.”

“Yeeeah, we’re gonna do that,” Millie says immediately, grabbing onto Lysan quickly, who thankfully only slightly protests. “Let’s go.”

He finger waves goodbye to the both of you- and you’re not sure who’s eyes he was on when he did it.

“Okay, starting to think this little outing is getting to be more trouble than it’s worth,” Millie grouses. “First rude guys, then freakshow old people...ugh.”

“He didn’t seem THAT bad,” Lysan defends. “I mean, yeah, he was kinda creepy, but I thought that was his, y’know...his thing? I mean, the tent and all.”

He probably hasn’t cleaned that tent in literal years,” Millie grouses. “Look, let’s just...go somewhere else, okay? There’s gotta be something in the LIGHT we can do…”

You just let a small ‘hmm’ of consideration for now as they decide where to go next…

>The Tent of Mystique is still there, but there seems to be a small commotion around it now. There’s a lot of warbling and muttering…
>One of the games at the fairgrounds looks like it’s about to hold a small event, judging by the number of summons gathering.

Well, that's concerning. We've fought people that didn't smell half as bad. Let's maybe not go back there.
>>
>>2978614
Actually, interesting question, we've smelled summoners before here right? Do we know if there's a correlation between summoner and summon with regards to power level? Does a high level summoner smell like a non-threat while their summon smells like a dumpster? Were the teachers a good enough sample size for that... Does this guy have Real Power as well as summons? 2 v 1 would be a really deceptive threat.

Suddenly, Millie points off to where most of the games were; seems like she’s seen the crowd that’s been gathering, too. “Hey! Over there! Seems like something actually cool might be going on.”

That does seem to spark Lysan’s curiosity. “Y’think? There ARE a lot of summons around there…” Smirking, he looks at you and waves you on. “Sure! Let’s go see.”

“Alright…” you’re not sure of it, yourself, but who knows. Maybe everyone won’t run from you.

As you get closer, you can make out one particular summon that seems to be flying above everyone else in an effort to have their voice stretch. A bat-like summon, with green and purple swirls and a bulbous red nose; yet surprisingly humanoid and shapely body is doing her level best to call out as her wings flap: “Thas’ almost all for registratin’! Any last second entries out there lookin’ ta score one-a the BIGGEST PRIZES ON OFFA TODAY!?” She’s quite cheery about it, her sunshine smile stretching across her face- at least until she sees you approaching. Her eyes widen a tad and her flapping goes uneven for a moment as she forgets herself for a moment and lets out a small scream. She does catch herself, however, and after a moment her grin returns, if a bit more shaky. “S-so, yooou folk innerested?”

(cont.)
>>
>>2978740
“Uh...I think!” Lysan says good-naturedly. “What is it?”

“You’re comin’ over here and you don’t even know what you’re in for? Oh, brother…” That voice is someone new. As the crowd parts a bit (some clearly to give you some space) you can see who it is- another summon, this one also an animal-humanoid, but instead of a bat, it looks to be more of a eagle...or maybe a seagull. Sitting on what seems to be some sort of makeshift throne, she’s a red and brown combination, the earthy colors mixing well on her. Her wings are folded like arms in what might be an imperious pose if it weren’t for where she was.

She’s standing next to a double-sided wall, and from your angle, you can see that there’s tiny toy targets on either side- colored red, blue, and green, with some rarer than others. “This is the ultimate target test! It’s a simple challenge- the timer starts. The targets move. You shoot the targets, you get points! Normally, you’d have to make due with normal, boring other challengers, and the winner gets the prize. But right NOW we’re doing something special!” She puffs up here, and you get an idea of where this is going… “I’ve been the champion of this game for eight years! No one’s ever beaten my top score, and no one’s ever beaten ME!”

“An’ I’m ‘bout the only one what’s come close! So, what today’s about...!” the bat mentions from above you. “We’re gonna take a summoner an’ their summon, and they gotta square up ‘gainst me an’ the Beaky Bomba ‘ere! A lil' 2 on 1, ya know? Ya beat me, you get her. Ya beat her-” And here there’s a laugh. “-an’ you get your pick o’ top prizes! Not jus’ the stuffed stuff, either!”

“YOU can call me Queen Breecha!” The birdgirl puffs proudly, her deep sea-blue eyes sparkling. “So! You up for it?”

Lysan looks to you, his eyes sparkling.

You sigh, turning to the aerial duo. "The rules?"

"We'll give the summoners a basic weapon- can't do nothin' dangerous ta nothin' cept those plates. Summons kin get one too if they need- but othawise they can use what they got if they kin shoot without it bein' too dangerous," the bat explains. "Green's worth 1, blue's worth 2, red's worth 3. Hit the black plates and ya LOSE 3 points! Highest score in sixty seconds wins!"

Lysan looks oddly hyped now. “We could do it! I think we really could!”

I'm building a much too long list, but it's taking a while.

I see it as a good way to practice using our mana to guide our blasts.

A key skill for future Chain Lightning.

We could also instead try to cover the negative point targets with mana of one frequency and then use a counter frequency to destroy the rest without touching them.

I see this as a straight up opportunity to experiment during the mission with low stakes.

>writing quality
I've many several over the years, but
>tone
is a little more difficult, at least for what I've found. Most of these will trend more serious than MGFH.
>inter-dimensional wayfarer is sort of generic right?
It is kinda generic, but it's also rather uncommon; No matches I know of there.

Not in any particular order.

>Maverick Hunker Quest
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Maverick%20Hunter%20Quest
Set in the Megaman universe, but I didn't know a thing about the setting before starting and have thoroughly enjoyed it. It does a pretty good job of balancing serious and fun, but as trended more dark over time. It's old, but still running when HC & CL can find the time.

>Deniable Assets Quest
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Deniable%20Assets%20Quest
You are a merc on the payroll of a corporation, but technically not on their payroll .as corporate war is illegal. Old, and technically finished, though the ending was sorta rushed as FG had to bow out for medical reasons, iirc. Tended toward a lighter tone.

>RE:Monster Ex Quest
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=re%3Amonster
Isaki before the genre had a name. You are reincarnated as a spider centaur, or drider. Somewhat serious initially, but silly amounts of high rolls eventually causes the tone to stay light and comfy (maybe a little too comfy at times). Note: It takes a long time to leave "home", but it does happen eventually. Technically on unannounced hiatus, generally considered dead.

>Strike Witches Quest
thread 1:
https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/17545010/
the rest (might have to fiddle with the tags a little):
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=strike%20witches
You want high energy hijinks, intense action, and teenage girls strapping magic planes to their legs and dogfighting alien? You've some to the right place. A spinoff of the original Strike Witches series. Tone is tyically light, except for when it trips and falls down a deep, dark hole for a while. Note: Planefag (QM) is a highly polarizing figure. Typically, you either love him or hate him. He writes excellent characters and excellent action, but absolutely loves trolling his readers, and has a tendency to steer character decisions, for better or worse. He has also never finished a quest to date. He's still alive and quite active on twitter, but is no longer QMing. Take note of the chatter in-thread; there is a lot of write ups in here if that's your thing.

>Kant-O-Celle Quest
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Kant-O-Celle%20Quest
Another Planefag special. Much lower hijinks, but that's not a bad thing. This time, you're a freshly-forged admiral of the new ship-girl-things. Tone is more serious overall, but has the same occasional rapid swinging. Also lots of write ups here.

[1/3]
>>
>>2980472

>Strike Witches 1989
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Strike%20Witches%201989
A Spin off of a spin off, '89 is a blend of planefag's SW universe with a healthy dose of Top Gun, set in 1989 instead of the 40's. Tone is more serious than planefag, but much more consistent. Finished properly, and GD is trying to get a new quest in the same universe in modern-ish day setup, but IRL is causing him issues. Also lots of write ups, including quest spin offs.

>Valen Quest
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Valen%20Quest
You are the heir to a major noble title, but your schemeing aunt is trying to marry you off before you can inherit. Not as political as it sounds. Tone is pretty firmly serious. The most important concept is your choice matter. A lot. We tend to fail more often than we succeed, Are you Forgetting something? but man, we do something right for once, there's nothing better. Old, but still running when Riz can make the time. One of my personal favorites.

>Lamia Daughter Quest
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Lamia%20Quest
You play a Lamia girl who was raised by a paladin after he killed your original parents. The one that got me into questing. It's been a long time since a last read it through, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. Tone is serious, but slightly odd. Finished, long ago. There's a spinoff-continuation that started not long after it ended, and is still running: Lamia Legacy Quest. Never could get into it myself, but it's worth a look.

>Totemist Quest
http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Totem%20Quest
you are the Totemist for your small disconnected village, as your master went and got himself killed before you could finished your apprenticeship. If you kill creatures in a particular way, you can take trophies from them and fuse them with other objects to make powerful items. Starts a little slow, but speeds up after the initial hump. Diarca must be generating a huge update; he's been missing for over 2 years now. Tone is comfy and light, but played straight.

>Maigcal Executive Operations Quest
https://fiction.live/stories/Magical-Operations-Executive-Quest/5RsmHtGLWLgX6tQsH/home
Hey look, another quest with Magical Girls! This one is about how things would be if MGs were a thing in WWII. Light tone, but plays itself straight. Is currently in a very long crossover that's notably darker than the normal stuff; current expectations are that it'll be at least a year before we return to normal.

Well...maaaybe if you squinted and turned your head, you could call this a sort of training? Even regardless...well, hell, it shouldn’t hurt anything directly if you go along with it. “Sure. Sounds fun enough.”

The bat belle scoffs. “Don’t sound like it do to you, but sure, whateves! You just wait right there and we’ll get to ya in a blink!” Finally daring to flap closer to the ground, she begins organizing the challengers, and now it’s merely a matter of waiting your turn…

“Wow. Didn’t think you’d go for it for free,” you hear Millie mutter. As you turn to her, she just shrugs. “What? You said you were here because you wanted money. I have to imagine you came from someone that was pretty mercenary- or worse.” She sighs again as she scowls. “I don’t think I’ve ever come across a loose summon asking for money, before. Favors, old objects, sacrificial animals, heck, there was one time with a newborn...but cash?”

“Not that we don’t appreciate it, of course!” Lysan’s mother says quickly, and his father nods in agreement.

“So, mind spilling WHY our coin is so important to you?” Millie asks. “I wanna take note of this one.”

Tch. Nosy one, this girl. But, maybe you can get something out of it, too. “A question for a question, then. Just what IS your profession? Some kind of law enforcement?”

“Chief Inquisitor for the Department of Magical Regulations, to be precise,” she states proudly, straightening up. To your surprise, the statement makes a few heads turn in surprise. “Wanted to see my little brother for a bit, but if he’d been later than he was, my excuse to take off wouldn’t have held up. I’ve got to be back in the office by this evening anyway, and I’m going to have a mountain of paperwork to deal with when I get back.” And then she leans down, eyeing you carefully. “Including filing a report on a certain unique summon that seems to deal in mercenary stylings. Which brings us back around...”

You scoff. “Well, is it really? Sacrificial animals make too much of a mess, old objects are too fragile and, well...old, and not to mention, I'm usually the one that GRANTS favors. All in all, is it really so hard to believe money sustains me the in same way as money sustains you?”

“Considering that we don’t literally need money to maintain our corporeal form…” she ventures, squinting a bit.

You shrug. “Well, who knows? I might just BE lying about it.” Yikes, this girl. Inquisitor? Really? You wouldn’t have guessed at first glance. Then again, no one would wager Lorelei being...well, anything, really. So you’re probably the last who should judge. “Is that part of your job description, then? Sniffing out rogue summons and putting a stop to them?”

She nods, stiffly, and you can see her eyes hardening, expression shifting into something far more serious than you’ve seen her yet...something rather familiar, really. “Among other things, yes. We’ve got more than a few contingencies in plan in case a loose summon gets called forth, or a binding summon decides the bond isn’t worth it. When things get risky, they call in the department. When things get DANGEROUS…” And here that tight expression morphs into a near predatory grin. “...they call me, specifically.” And then she seems to unwind, her expression demorphing into that same lackadasical look she’s had so far. “But, y’know, that’s in-between the usual day to day.”

“Interesting.” And it is! Enough, actually, that you wonder if perhaps you can’t spin it to your advantage a bit...not to mention Sal would likely approve. “Tell you what. I'll give you a chance to figure out the reason why I’m so big on money until your brother's request is over. If you guess correctly... I'll tell you how to contact me."

She goggles. “YOU would tell ME how to intentionally summon you? Binding and everything? I find that hard to believe. But...you’re on.”

You offer your hand, and she grips it firmly. The two of you then rejoin Lysan in watching the competitors line up...and get knocked down.

It turns out that the bat (who was apparently named Wallacia) and Queen Breecha weren’t just full of hot air. As soon as the starting bell rang, the summoner (with the mock rifle) and his summon, a lizard thing that vaguely reminded you of Sal (ech) both began firing away wildly, trying their best to hit just about anything of note. Sadly, they didn’t do too well, but who you’re noticing isn’t them, but their opponent, Wallacia.

The bat girl foregoes any use of armaments (as you somewhat expected) and instead fires off blasts of a pinkish-purple energy from her fanged maw, as though screeching, almost. She’s pinpoint, but it helps that her attacks have a bit of splash damage, from what you can tell. Just enough so that cracks and chips form in nearby plates, causing something of a chain reaction when she aims for one of those next, and easily demolishes it, only to repeat the process. The duo stand no chance, and when the horn sounds, Wallacia stands (or rather flutters) tall easily, her score a whopping 180 compared to their measly 41.

“HaHA! Walk in tha park!” Wallacia crows. “Sorry ‘bout that, loves! Maybe anotha day?” Clearly not, and most of the audience know it too, even if they clap politely.

The second duo fares even worse than the first, netting only 35 points total. Wallacia had even gone easy on them (much to Breecha’s jeering), only scoring 130 points. They’d gotten the same polite cheers, even as they tried their best to hide their faces from the crowd.

However, the third duo approached with far more confidence, and the tension that was beginning to be lost suddenly permeated the air again. A young man, dark haired but in a torn black basic shirt and breeches. Perched on his face is a pair of dark sunglasses, followed by a enlarged, nearly person-sized bee-like summon, chrome with blue and yellow coloring. On its frontmost, humanoid arms was something like a beehive in miniature, with small stingers jutting out of it. The shades wearing boy is offered the weapon, which he accepts, even twirling it around one hand, and testing the weight. The buzzing bee simply stretches his arms and you can see the stingers quiver in readiness.

The horn goes- and to your surprise the duo start blasting as though they’ve done it all their lives. Their shots are direct and unhesitating, their movement is quick and snappy, and it doesn’t take at all long for the audience to recognize it, quickly getting behind the mysterious newcomers. Wallacia’s eyes don’t stray from the target board, but the way her oversized ears are quivering makes it clear she hears everything and likely has a good idea what’s going on. Firing and small screeches ring out as the both of them pour everything they have into the targeted demolishing of the plates. As far as you can tell, neither of the duo hit any of the black plates- Wallacia’s wide damage range permits her some error range, but even she seems to be more careful in taking shots.

>>2983412
And then the horn sounds, and a massive cheer rises up from the crowd! Final score?

Wallacia? 285.
The mysterious duo? 296.

Wallacia, for her part, puts a winged hand in her head, expression clearly a bit gobsmacked. “Strike me blind… didn’t think I’d get bopped like that…” To her credit, though, she recovers quickly enough, shaking her head of the cobwebs and smiling. “Well, ain’t that somethin’! Looks like we got someone what got the right ta challenge the queen!”

“Hmph. They might make acceptable quarry,” she boasts as she struts forward, much to ooohs and commotion from the crowd.

“Hey, lady, we gotcha friend’s number, I think we got yours, yo!” The bee summon brags.

Queen Breecha simply smirks as best she can with a beak. “Then bring it on!”

After a few moments to allow the duo to recover, they take their places back on the side, as Queen Breecha takes up a ready position herself, eyes laser focused, position steady.

3...2...1...and the bell sounds- and the duo are off, intent on repeating their underdog performance.

And then Queen Breecha opens her mouth.

Like a stream, golden blasts of energy fly from her mouth, and for a second there’s total silence in the crowd. As fast as the boys are firing, Breecha is practically a living machine gun, easily matching their raw output- but even more surprisingly, OUTmatching them in sheer reaction speed. Her head is like a robot swivel, jerking this way and that near instantaneously absolutely no strain or effort in her eyes, which don’t even dare to blink.

The boys make a game effort of it, but it’s clear who the superior is here, and by the time the dust settles, the score is astonishing, but clear.

The duo? 320.

Breecha? 480. How did they even set up and repair that many plates?

Everyone stands stunned as Breecha rises, clearing her throat only slightly. “Ahem. Beg pardon. Could you get me a glass of water, Wallacia? I was suffering from one HECK of a tickle in the back of my throat during that. Bugged me something fierce!”

The duo are nearly too shellshocked to step away. As you look to Lysan, you notice that he’s FAR less confident looking than he was before. Heck, YOU’VE got to admit- she’s a LOT faster and more accurate than you were expecting. Could you beat that?

Maybe. You’d have to be at the top of your game, though…

“Heeey, uh...kiddo?” Millie nudges her brother slightly. “No shame in backing off. I don’t think ANYONE was expecting THAT. She’s gotta have been a combat specialist in a past life. Talking decades of experience, probably centuries. No need to get embarrassed just to feed her own ego.”

“I...uh…” Lysan’s mouth moves, but you’re not sure if he’ll be saying anything anytime soon.

“Perhaps just look at it as training?” you offer. Trying to guarantee a victory under these circumstances wouldn’t be...well, you’re not as confident as normal. “Not to win, just...do your best.”

Millie shrugs. “I mean, yeah, that’s a way you could look at it, if you don’t mind a LITTLE public jeering at least.”

You nod in agreement. “Not to mention, in the wider world, unexpected things tend to happen suddenly and without warning. “I’d say learning how to adapt to a situation quickly might save your life. Besides, on the Test of Might, won’t backing down mean instant failure?” And you can’t have THAT. No payment, otherwise.

Fortunately, that seems to galvanize him- at least enough to tear him away from watching the next challenge up get decimated by Wallacia, now playing with a clear spark in her eyes. “Y-yeah, I guess you’re right, huh? And it’s just a game, so...so maybe?” His eyes were brighter now, if not shining like before, but you’ll take what you can get.

The person and summon duo after seem to actually do well; the masked humanoid summon seems to have to use one of the rifles as well, but she wields it deftly, and it seems like the rifles are respectable enough that the duo can keep up with Wallacia, if only barely. Unfortunately, keep up is all they manage, and at the end? The score is 280/265. At the very least, this summon and her summoner both get a round of respectable applause, the two ladies even taking a bow to the crowd.

“Allllrighty, then! Next up is the last-minutes! Soooo, uh, get on up here!” You hear a muttered ‘I guess’ come from her as you and Lysan step up as the plates are replaced. She looks at you from clear across the ‘field’, basically peeking at you from behind her wall. “So you want a rifle or ya doin’ this natural style?”

“I’ll just use my own built-in weaponry,” you wave off. This, you suppose, is as good a time as any for practice. That, and Lysan needs to know what you’re capable of without potentially giving it away to too many people he might be facing.

Wallacia nods. “Righto, jus’ remember, nothing too powerful- basically can’t break more n’ one target at a time, kay?” You nod. You can handle that well enough, although it’s funny. Seems like Wallacia just barely skirts the line of that rule herself, considering how she plays.

Lysan picks up the faux-rifle, holding it a bit awkwardly. “Never really used one of these before…” he mutters to you. “Seen it a couple of times, though, read about the concept. Can’t be too hard, right?”

You can hear a small chortle from the other side of the stage. Oh boy. Well, you’re not expecting a lot from him, anyway. Hopefully this’ll at least do something for his teamwork- as long as he doesn’t try to shoot your own targets, he can do as he likes. Besides…

“Don’t worry,” you say softly, as you ready both hands, glowing softly. “You just try your best. I’ve got enough firepower for the both of us.”

“Alright, when the bell goes!” Wallacia says gamely.

And like a shot you both are off. Almost immediately you realize that Wallacia’s taking you seriously, as several quick shots ring out on her side. Not to mention, the moving targets are a major issue for Lysan, as although he makes a decent couple of shots, more than a few breaks are black plates. But, if nothing else? The one thing you have in abundance, matching even Breecha... is rate of fire.

And if precision won’t win you the day, mass quantity will.

Your blasts careen from your palms- the idea of having to tune them so far down is actually a touch hard for you, but you manage enough, although the size of said blasts are reduced as well as consequence. To your vague frustration, that leads to a bit of your aim being off, as you have to readjust yourself for not being able to hit as wide an area as normal. The speed at which your shots fly off, however, is impeccable, and for almost too long, the sound of shattering plates is all that fills your ears.

However, another ring breaks through the din, and you lower your hands as Lysan lowers the rifle. You were only partially paying attention to him, but as for you, you could’ve used a warm-up, perhaps...but, no excuses. You look to see the score as Wallacia peeks out as well.

Wallacia: 295

You and Lysan?...298.

There’s a *whump* to your side, and you and Lysan turn around to see Wallacia, flat on her back, a dazed look in her eyes. “You gotta be jokin’ with me…twice inna day?” She stumbles back onto her feet, slapping her face with her wings in a desperate attempt to clear out some cobwebs as Queen Breecha guffaws in the background. “I...I can’t be losing me touch…”

“Really, now. Walla, do we have to fire you?” Breecha quips from the sidelines. “You’re supposed to STOP them so I wouldn’t have to do work, not actually lose! Once is fine, but-”

“I know, I know! I just...gaaaah!” Man, she seems really riled up. “Bloody stiff plates…woulda tied if it weren’t for...gah, whateva! Alright, then! So, you’ve tha right to face-”

“In a minute!” Breecha says imperiously. “They need to reset the plates- and I want another glass of water.” Wallacia starts to flap off, but Breecha waves her back. “I’ve already asked someone to bring it, don’t bother.”

>>2990504
There’s a bit of mumbling, but no one says anything to argue towards the bird. Lysan, for his part, looks both relieved and even more nervous somehow. “I can’t believe we got through that!”

“I thought you did pretty well out there!” Millie says, walking up to both of you. “For a first timer with a rifle, that was pretty solid, lil bro!”

“Aw, thanks…” he blushes. “Not that it’ll do much against Breecha, but who knows?”

You shrug. If you didn’t step up your game, he wouldn’t be wrong. “It’s like I said earlier. Practice. Try just focusing on NOT hitting the black plates.” You look back to Breecha, who’s tapping her foot, clearly waiting on something. Wallacia seems...well, far more mopey than she was with the first group that beat her.

“You two struck me as friends earlier. Is that not the case?” Really, initially you’d thought them to be something of a dynamic duo at first, but now…

She flutters her wings slightly in uncertainty. “Ehhh...kinda sorta? Like, she’s friendly so long as things are goin’ her way, but when they don’t...I mean, s’complicated, y’know? She’s one o’ the summons of onna the guys what run the carnival so she gots his ear. Likes to strut around, make sure folks know it.”

Ah. “Oh. So that explains her attitude. How long have you been here, then?”

“Eh, years. ‘Bout three years after it first started, methinks. From one to anotha. Only a handful of us summons stick around for the long haul. Used to have a section what was all about scary stories n’ fables, and I useta do that. Breecha’s always been mistress of the mini-games, though.” The two of you look back to her- having finally collected her water...although you notice a familiar, bandaged face, leaning away from the side of her head- it’s pretty obvious to you he was just telling her something.

She looks at you with an odd expression, then turns back to the retreating man, scowling fiercely. Suddenly, she downs all her water in nearly a single gulp, and tosses the mug behind her. “Hey! I’m ready to go over here!” Huh. Whatever happened, she’s lost all of her bravado and snark; even the audience has noticed, judging by the expression on some of their faces. Instead, she marches up to her side of the board, shaking herself loose- or at least attempting to. There’s something off about her now, but you’re not sure what…

Wallacia frowns in confusion as well. “Huh. Wonder what got stuck in ‘er craw?” Shaking her head, she motions to you. “Uh, might as well get set. Looks like things are gonna be ready ‘fore too much longer. Uh…’preciate you...y’know. Tryin’ to talk.”

You nod, and you both go your separate ways, as Lysan gets himself ready again. “So...just focus on not hitting the black plates this time. Got it.” As you prepare yourself, you find yourself wonder just what bandage face wanted with her...

You set yourself, and then...3...2...1…*ding*

The two of you begin, and to your genuine surprise, Lysan seems incredibly focused this time- his shots are, if not precise, then at least consistently fast, and although he’s constantly shaking, his speed at pulling the trigger is enough so that he’s consistently getting break after break. You’re honestly impressed- maybe it’s just the fact that he’s less worried about his opponent and simply is trying to better himself. Without that fear of ‘failure’, he may just be performing to his maximum ability.

It’s impressive enough even that you take it fairly lightly- it’s clear from the oohs and aahs and cheers that the audience has clued into his sudden ability, and you’ve been part of enough stories to know that everyone loves an underdog. Your blasts fly from your hands, but you’re also taking it more as general training than as a particular competition. Accuracy is always important, after all.

However, about thirty seconds through, you swear something’s off, although you’re not sure what. As Lysan keeps up his onslaught, you let your mind wander a bit to determine just what the issue is, your rate of fire slowing slightly.

It doesn’t take you too long to realize, however- the constant small sound from Breecha’s side of the field seems to be...less frequent. Wonder what the cause of that might be...however, before you can put too much thought into it, the bell rings again, and the two of your are forced to stop- and you barely do before cheers roar out from the crowd!

“Wait, what? What happened?!” Lysan exclaims as he comes around to the side. Breecha looks to be in a foul mood as she looks up at the score, and you have to say, you’re surprised.

Breecha- 310, even.

You and Lysan? 329!

Lysan breaks out into a massive cheer! “WOOOO! WE DID IT!” Almost immediately he nearly tackles you into a hug, and it takes a MIGHTY amount of willpower to not yell at him to put you down immediately. Honestly, the only reason you DON’T is because you’re busy looking at Breecha, who simply stomps off- stopping near a shell-shocked Wallacia only momentarily to bark something at her before continuing on, going past the backs of the booths to where the trailers were.

Lysan is still jubilant, as is the rest of the family as they crowd the both of you. “I can’t believe we pulled it off!” Lysan cheers, and his mother and father are quick to shower him in congratulations, while Millie simply pats him on the back- although you notice her glancing back Breecha’s way as well for a moment.

However, that’s all interrupted when a stunned looking Wallacia interrupts, flapping into the little circle you all had made. “Wow and a half...nevah thought I’d see the day, but ‘ere it is…”

“So, we get any prize we want, right?” Lysan asks eagerly.

Wallacia nods, slowly. “Yeah...any top-level prize from any game booth here, or one of our special prizes; but ya gotta wait until later, right ‘fore we close for the day if ya wanna get one of those. Can’t jus’ letcha walk around with this stuff, y’know? Might get stolen.”

“Oof, waiting the whole day?” Lysan’s father remarks, scratching his head. “That might be a bit much…”

“Yeah, I gotta get back before evening,” Millie mumbles.

Wallacia lets out a hum of consideration. “Wweeeelll...that’s a bit of a pickle. S’pose you can get it early, though...say after the big show in the main tent? That should be startin’ in just a few minutes, actually! Ya can come back and get it then, and hit the road after!”

I think it's better to stick together even if Millie is super strong.
Also ask Wallacia
>So, I presume that there's a reason why Breecha slowed down at the end? And why you've set the game up so people have to defeat you first...

>"Ba baa ba bum, ba ba ba ba ba bum..."

>"Noice."

>"GAAAH! You- how repugnant! If you're going to obverse my dance practice then you should at least inform me before you start!"

>"An ruin the show, sheila?"

>"You...!"

>"Whoa, what's goin' on here?"

>"Ah! Miss Mono, correct? Nothing severe, merely some unwanted attention."

>"You mean of yer dancin'? It was pretty saucy."

>"...There aren't any foodstuffs involved, though. It's just motion."

>"...Right. Anyway, you kinda reminded me about something. You're like...all made of metal, right?"

>"Indeed."

>"Do you get tired easy?"

>"Not in the conventional sense, no. I do, however, occasionally require a recharge to allow my subsystems to operate at maximum capacity."

>"...so you're not, got it. Anyway, was wondering 'cause I got wind of this 'freestyle musical troupe' tryout thing goin' on today. Was lookin' to check it out. Wanted Lorelei ta pal along with me, but heck knows what she's doin'. That and you guys hang around her, and well...you like dancin, I guess. An' I like singin'. Wanna try it out with me?"

>"Oh! That sounds intriguing. I have to admit, gaining experience and critique from someone other than Miss Lorelei would do well for my databanks."

>"Awesome! C'mon, then, shouldn't take too long to get there- it's gonna be going on for a while...should really look into this 'driving' thing sooner than later, though."

>"It IS highly useful..."

>...

>...

>..."Pft, those gals are off their bloody rockers if they think I'm not sittin' in on THIS. OI, WAIT UP!"
