You are Captain Shihōin Yoruichi, the twenty-second head of your clan and Executive of the Onmitsukidō. Your opponent is a traitor by the name of Amagai Shūsuke, a shinigami who fell in with Aizen Sōsuke's band of miscreants some time ago along with Kaname Tōsen and Kurotsuchi Mayuri. The former died months ago before Aizen had a chance to escape the Seireitei, and the latter has put you in an interesting position by virtue of his sheer ambivalence towards supporting Aizen in any practical sense. Ultimately Mayuri's fate will have to be decided after this mess is all over... as dim a view you take of the man his usefulness to the Seireitei may well outweigh any other factors.

In the immediate sense, he's one less person you'd need to fight before getting to Aizen himself. That's reason enough to give him at least a temporary free pass.

Amagai isn't in a similar position. Where Mayuri's actual loyalties are a complete mystery Amagai has chosen to double down on his treason, attacking you with abilities you weren't even aware that he had. His bakkotō, possibly furnished prior to his treason by the criminal Kumoi Gyōkaku, had an ability not dissimilar from that of the zanpakuto Muramasa which could sever the connection between a zanpakuto and its wielder. He's also been given the ability to hollowfy by Aizen Sōsuke, which is apparently a refinement of the agent which he tested against the Captains and Lieutenants of the Gotei 13 a century ago.

Since you first got a good estimate of his capabilities you've worked to weaken the limb that his bakkotō was fused with, and as he released his resurreccion you managed to tear the bakkotō off his arm entirely.

“You can't use your Bankai like this, can you?” you guess. Really it's not much of a leap in logic, Amagai has no concept of what a 'poker face' is. It's obvious what's going through his head. “Instead of forging your hollow powers into their own zanpakuto Aizen hollowfied the one you already had. That's how the same zanpakuto you used as a shinigami can have a resurreccion.”

“Am I wrong?”

Amagai's glare is all the answer you need.

You have both Bankai and resurreccion at your disposal, while your opponent has only the latter. And while that release state is noticeably more powerful than your own equivalent, and goes much further to transform its wielder's body, it's come at the cost of sacrificing his previous Bankai ability entirely. So compared to gaining a resurreccion that can be used together with a Bankai he's at an obvious disadvantage.

In keeping the two parts of your souls separate but embracing them as equal, perhaps you and Riku have done precisely what the Central 46 once accused you of. Perhaps you really have left the realm of shinigami behind you.
>1/2
>>
>>2946944
But the implications of that are something you'll need to work your way through at a later time, when you're not in the middle of a fight.

“After all these years,” Amagai growls. “After everything I've sacrificed, I will not be stopped short by you. Not when my goal is in sight!”

Oh Riku, here he goes about his plans. Why do so many of the shinigami who turn traitor start thinking like this? They spend years and dedicate their lives to it, so they think that means they're entitled to succeed at all of their schemes regardless of how strong or weak they happen to be.

>Okay, so what exactly is your problem with the Seireitei? Depending on your answer I may be merciful.

>>2946976
There are a great number of things hidden away in the Shihōin Clan's archives, and as the head of your clan you were expected to know most of them from a tender age. Many of them are quite esoteric in their use, and some you doubt actually work at all. These sorts of things have filtered into the Soul Society over two thousand years, from legendary times before spiritual beings began to keep their own history, and their power led the ancestors of the current Noble Houses to begin sealing them away.

Well, that and the fact that some of them are items you're clearly not supposed to have, whose acquisition may well have been of suspect morality.

Among those are two of the Astras, including the Varunastra which is said to be the countermeasure to the Agneastra wielded by the fire god Agni. The other of course is the Vajra, exposure to which hundreds of years ago when you were a girl may actually explain some of your own 'innate' abilities. Not that you'd ever tell anyone that, aside from your wife perhaps... and only if it ever became relevant.

But for much the same reason that you haven't told anyone about those, it makes sense to hold off on using them now. It's simply best that nobody knows of their existence... the incidents surrounding the great spear Sōkyoku confirmed that your parents were right to teach you as much.

You also briefly contemplate using a copy of the gem of Kukulkan that's hidden away under the Shihōin manor, but that's not something you want known that you actually have. After all, you've learned over the years that the “Gods” aren't actually all myth and no reality, meaning there might actually be a Kukulkan out there who would want the gem.

Again, you're not sure about the how behind that particular acquisition, or how long your family has had it, but it's really best if it stays there until you can figure out what to do with it.

Instead, you settle on something quite understated: the khanda of Manjushri. It's not the most powerful of swords, nor is it one particularly suited to counteracting the now djinni-like form that Amagai is using, but it's said to be able to cut through the 'veil of ignorance'. If you're right about how that translates into practical use, it should be suited more to Amagai's state of mind rather than his abilities.

The golden hilt of the blade is slightly warm in your hand as it manifests there, wide through its length and terminating in a point that's almost more like a flat surface.
>1/2
>>
>>2947035
If you remember correctly, the appropriate technique to match with a khanda is the Indian martial art of Gatka, which is traditionally based heavily on a three-step rhythm that allows the repetition of mantras during movement.

“That's it?” Amagai snorts. “That's all you can muster? A blunt sword?”

You give your newly-manifested weapon a flourish, the lightning of Raijūsenkō's resurreccion hissing and crackling in time.

One... two... three.

You give it a different flourish, this time ending with a straight thrust.

One... two... three.

“This is what I need at this moment,” you counter. “So to answer your question yeah, that's it”

“Then you will burn,” Amagai snarls, unleashing a wave of fire. “You'll all burn!”

One... two... three.

You scythe through the flames, parting them effortlessly and striking across Amagai's right arm with your third movement. The blade rings like you've struck brass, and leaves a deep cut across his forearm from which molten reishi drips like blood to catch fire on the stone tiles beneath you.

“That's not possible...” he contends.

One... two... three.

You completely reject Amagai's next flame-based attack, using the side of the khanda to break it up at extremely close range, then with your second 'step' you slash down across the same arm you hit before and gouge out a wound that overlaps the first.

Then you use a light flash step off your lead toe, completely evading his third attack and slipping around his left side into his blind spot.

>Come in straight with an attack to the base of the neck. It's a perfect continuation of the gatka style you've been using.
>Use a bakudō, then circle back around to his opposite side. An immediate attack would be too predictable.
>Extend Raijūsenkō, give the khanda a 'point' that's capable of stabbing. Amagai would never see it coming from a more or less pointless sword.

You continue with the movements fitting to the gatka style, the fatal blow already in sight.

One... two...

This time however your second step finds the edge of your khanda stuck firmly in Amagai's already-wounded arm, which he's raised to protect his neck.

“I have you...” he begins, failing to grasp the pattern.

Three.

Your right leg sweeps in a high arc as you pivot around the handle of your sword, essentially leaping through the air and twisting to avoid Amagai's counterattack. Then your lightning-shrouded ankle collides with the base of the traitor shinigami's neck, sending him crashing through an empty stone facade and out the back. Your blade wrenches free of his arm, leaving a trail of sizzling molten blood to cool behind him.

“You realized it,” you vocally applaud Amagai's efforts as you perch atop a nearby wall to where he embedded himself in the stone tiles common to the Seireitei's pavilions. “At least, the important part.”

“And what's that?” he spits.

“Exactly how dangerous I am,” you observe. “That it's better to sacrifice one arm to literally save your neck.”

“You give yourself too much credit, Shihōin Yoruichi.”

“And you are everything this sword was meant to cut,” you counter. “Going by the results, even if you're right I still come out ahead.”

With a loud rumble and a surge of power, six molten pillars of reishi explode from the ground in a circle all around where you and Amagai now face each other, the panoramic view of the Seireitei between them shimmering from the heat. So this is some new sort of attack...

>Get in close with a powerful thrust on your first stroke, but finish him on your third. He hasn't caught on yet.
>You get three steps to dodge him... try to set it up so that he hits himself and finish him off immediately after he does.
Into this:
>other: Break down the rhythm of the dance beat like this:
>First beat - First stroke with a thrust, get to the edge of the ring and dare him to enter
>Second step - Get tricky, do a triplet step that still follows the rhythmic beat you've established does a rising cut, purposefully leave yourself open
>Third step - Who says the third step/hit needs to be a sword slash? just do a palm thrust and push him into the volcano ring and watch as he fries himself.
>the following rhythm can finish him off.

Step one.

You wrap Raijūsenkō's lightning around the khanda's blade, dashing out of the path of an onrushing surge of magma that was once one of the Seireitei's buildings.

Step two.

Your dodge places you perilously close to one of the columns, which launches another assault. This time you mostly dodge, but use the lightning-clad blade to deflect some of the reishi in a molten shower that splatters towards Amagai in a wide arc that follows the graceful turn of your own body.

He hisses bitterly, raising his arms to keep the lava rain from getting in his eyes.

Step three.

You plunge the blade into Amagai's chest.

His eyes go wide as he realizes what you've done: the lightning shielded your sword from his molten attack, and in the moment where he lost sight of you your body had completed its turn to bring the point of the blade in line.

From there it was only a matter of launching a single flash-step lunge, closing the distance between you in an instant and sealing his fate.

“You... you...” he struggles to find words as you withdraw the blade with a scrape of metal against metal, turning one more half-circle to slam the hilt against his back to knock him forward. The fires of his resurreccion gutter out, and his body begins to change again.

This time, for the worse.

His legs are gone entirely, crumbled away to ash as his resurreccion collapses. His eyes too are gone, like dust on the wind.

“It seems I... burned a little too brightly for my own good,” he coughs... that even sounds painful. “Guess that's... all I can do.”

“This sword has the ability to cut through people's delusions. I don't know what drove you to such madness, but it was pure delusion to think you could defeat the whole world if only you had a little more power. What Aizen gave you... you let it go to your head, make you feel invincible.”

“That's what power does when it's simply given to people. And that loss of perspective is what defeated you.”

… at least, that's what a part of you wanted to tell him, like the summary of a lesson where you just beat the tar out of him with your hakuda. This is after all how you teach the Onmitsukidō under your command, when they are given the chance to learn from you personally. Or as personally as you can get with a wall of identical uniforms.

But the other part of you realizes that the wound you dealt him, combined with the damage caused by the loss of his resurreccion, is fatal. There's no healing from it. His own rapidly-fading hollow powers are the only reason he's still breathing and he's struggling to even manage that.

So instead of lecturing the man one last time, or chasing down whatever now-irrelevant personal grudge drove him to turn traitor, you plunge the khanda into his head.

“Maybe next time things will be better for you, Amagai,” you mutter, glaring up at Aizen as he watches you with a look of vague amusement.

A loud crash draws your attention to another part of the battlefield, and Aizen's as well...

You are Kuchiki Byakuya, head of your Clan and Captain of the Sixth Division.

As is her nature Shihōin Yoruichi immediately selected her prey, the traitor Amagai Shūsuke who was once her subordinate. Both the pride of her Onmitsukidō and her own pride demand that she resolve the situation personally. The two of them are best left alone.

Your own situation is much more fluid. You and the arrancar have been left to choose between two quincies: a tall, lanky man who Urahara Kisuke suggests is skilled in the use of poisons, and an even taller man with broad shoulders and blonde hair. This man, Urahara informed you can build up strength from having been damaged non-fatally.

“So, Captain,” the arrancar muses, rubbing the back of his neck. “You got a preference? Cause I sure as hell don't.”

“Or we could always flip a coin for it? Heads you take the big guy, tails I do?”

>I'll take the larger of the two. Perhaps 'death by a thousand cuts' will prove to be an effective strategy against him.

“I will fight the smaller of the two,” you decide. “My zanpakutō is far from suited to fighting the other one, by the sound of it.”

“Not like I'm in much better position,” the arrancar shrugs.

“Hey, come on Starrk!” his gun chides him. Wait... something about that sentence wasn't right.

“You're too damn gloomy.”

After a few moments the arrancar sighs dramatically, seemingly giving in to the cheerful... gun. “Yeah, guess you're right. I'll just have to come up with something.”

“You two finished talking yet?”

The lanky man stares at you, seemingly waiting for you to respond.

You respond with a hohō technique, aiming a thrust of Senbonzakura's point for the spiritual pressure points in the man's chest... attacks which end up completely missing. He's certainly quick on his feet... until recently your own Lieutenant could barely see the first attack, and would never have been able to see the second.

“That was pretty rude,” he frowns.

“If you expect an apology, you're looking in the wrong place,” you tell him in response. “We are two warriors opposed in battle. Neither of us owes the other anything.”

“I'll keep that in mind,” the quincy replies, sounding almost annoyed. “I'm Sternritter 'D', Askin Nakk le Varr. And you would be a Captain? Which one are you exactly, I've met so many new people today I'm having a little trouble keeping up.”

It’s not like Nakk won’t know about Byakuya’s basic capabilities, not really any reason to hold off on using Bankai. We’ll just get unnecessarily injured if we hold off on using abilities he’s likely already aware of.

You opt for a strategy that you must admit leaves you... somewhat less than comfortable. It's painfully close to the strategy that Shihōin Yoruichi might employ were she fighting your opponent instead: you plan to punch him. Anything else, and he would simply begin to adapt to your reiatsu the same way he did to that of the Captains and interlopers who he fought in the fake Karakura town.

“Captain of the Sixth Division,” you introduce yourself. “Kuchiki Byakuya. Feel privileged that I have given you the honor of my name.”

“My,” Askin Nakk le Varr muses aloud, “how positively noble of you.”

“Frankly, Byakuya, I don't find you very pleasant to be around.”

“And I believe that will be the only thing upon which we might agree,” you counter.

With a single flash step you close the distance and plant an uppercut on the quincy's chin. That must have startled him, as the blow landed all but unopposed. He almost instantly manifests a small folding bow from his right wrist, which you slam your left elbow into before throwing a right hook that catches him on the cheek.

Finally, on your fourth punch he manages to block your wrist and kick you in the ribs, though thankfully his physical strength seems no better nor worse than your own. But unfortunately, the fact that you have to immediately block a punch from your opposite side means that his rapid movement techniques are also a match for yours. Without a decisive speed advantage, it will be difficult to land a knockout punch.

And the longer this fight drags on, the worse of a position you'll likely find yourself in. Askin Nakk le Varr can draw in reishi from around him to continue the fight. You can't.

But the approach you have selected is the correct one, from a tactical perspective. If Urahara is correct and he was truly adapting to his opponents' reiatsu before, attacking him in such a way that you use no reiatsu will prevent him from adapting.

The ideal would be to strangle him, however unlike Lady Kusajishi and Lady Shihōin you have had no training in garrote techniques or 'submission' fighting. So you'll need to do your best with the abilities you have.

Here's a few ideas. (I posted so many, so you would have a variety of moods to choose from or ignore.)
Appacci / Halibel reaching Segunda Etapa from their perspective.

Best fox Vs Rosa at a series of trivial things to kill time (Go, target shooting ect..) while Riku does paperwork.

Yoru teaching Riku how to cook after trying some of Riku's cooking one day.

A day in the life of a Ninth division grunt.

Seriterei Olympics (without the organisers accounting for the strength and speed of some of the competitors.)
>>
>>2954661
>Riku is out cold somehow much to everyone's confusion. it's only at the end of the day they find Tenkotsuki and Rosa to freely roaming about but limited to Seireitei because they're sharing Riku's reiatsu juice to keep themselves manifested.

These are off the table because time literally will not pass for Riku while she's hidden like this. She won't be able to accidentally affect the future, but she also can't even watch her past unfold. And with how Riku has been written so far I'm not sure she'd want to pry into her friends' lives like that, because ultimately it'd be a violation of their privacy for little or no benefit.

Some of the other stuff is possible. We'll see what I end up writing later this evening after work/dinner.
>>
>>2956014
You are Tia Halibel, and this is probably a terrible idea. But it is an idea that might just work, terrible or not, which made it worth pursuing.

It is good that Lady Riku has promised not to hold back, but it sounds as if she will be inherently handicapped by the inability to muster the emotions needed to utilize her second zanpakuto. You have to wonder whether she can fill her role with that handicap.

A wide cero from Tiburon's blade is how you choose to begin, despite Lady Riku having used her Bankai. It surprises you almost as much as it surprises her, though not enough to prevent her from parrying your own edge with her small sword. She dodges your trailing fins and stops your kick cold, landing a quick stomping blow against your hip... she's quick, but these attacks are merely efficient. And while you can only admire that efficiency, you cannot fear it and you tell her as much.

You admire a lot of things about her.

It's her instinct to protect others, and against her instinct to raise her sword against those she's meant to protect. The world must be so simple to her eyes: divided between things she can change and things she cannot, things to protect and things to eliminate, those whom she loves and those whom she cannot abide. Her sense of duty is clear, her dedication to it unwavering.

A hollow faced with great power may be hypnotized by it, but strong convictions can be inspiring. And for those convictions to extend to yourself... it has always been heartening to know that despite being what one might call “natural enemies” she has never viewed you with any hatred right up to this very moment.

To call each other friends would have been unthinkable a hundred years ago.

She tries to use her second sword, to feel some amount of rage... but while it singes your skin a little it hardly manifests the purifying fires of rage which you know it is capable of. Instead she seeks to bind you, to give herself time to enact a different plan.

Her own power rips at her body as she actively focuses it, cycling it through her limbs in the familiar shunkō technique she and Lady Yoruichi both use. Her eyes bleed... and for an instant you swear you can feel yourself shiver involuntarily, whether it be from anticipation or fear you cannot say.

What is this pressure?

Around you Lady Riku raises a raw, overwhelming power. Walls of reishi like jet-black glass, every jagged fragment like a cruel glistening dagger, assemble around you as she chants. This kidō is a powerful one, a technique meant solely for killing the most powerful of foes: for killing you.

In a moment of clarity, you recognize this fact.

This is what you asked for, she's attacking you with lethal force. You've been bound heavily, immobilized, left to watch as her technique entombs you in a glassy funeral monument.

The pleas and shouts of bystanders do nothing to slow her down.

If you cannot escape, she will kill you.

You strain frantically against the bakudō, to no avail. There's not enough time, not nearly enough time. It's closing in on you, you can feel it like a blade pressed against your throat. The impending doom, the killing intent.

The strain is in your chest, you can't tell whether you're still breathing. Your heart races and your pulse pounds in your ears.

The light is gone. You're trapped. Helpless. Cold. Dark.

Alone.

You're going to die alone in the dark, miserable and scared, like you feared back when you were weak. Back when every day was a lonely struggle just to survive long enough to see the next miserable day. When living was all you had.

Those days were long ago. You were afraid that was all you had to look forward to.

And then you met Mila Rose and Sung-Sun.

They were trying to kill each other even back then, each hoping to make a quick meal but confronted with a surprisingly even match in the other. You put that to an end quickly enough, as a Vasto Lorde you were beyond their ability to deny even if they found your intercession strange at first.

You basically forced them to abide by your rules while you protected them. You encouraged them to grow, and not just in terms of their raw power. But even then, your association was always more about survival than anything else. Even when you met Lady Riku and Apacci you still had to focus on those immediate concerns.

Having watched Riku turn Apacci into an arrancar was the single greatest turning point in your life... even greater a change than meeting Mila Rose and Sung-Sun was. For the first time you had something you were beginning to think no hollow could ever have.

You felt a sense of purpose.

That was a powerful feeling.

It's still a powerful feeling.

And when you find yourself in the dark, alone with your own mortality, it's something you refuse to abandon. While everything else falls away you cling to it, the dream of being better than you are and of helping others towards the same goal. The dream which Lady Riku's actions that day awakened in you, and which you have sought to inspire in others. When that dream is all that is left, you grasp hold of it.

Purely on instinct you crash through the obsidian barrier and into the light, with no plan or clear idea what's going on anymore, but overflowing with determination. Your body moves without thought, lashing out at the attacker who had nearly taken your life mere moments ago... until her voice reaches you. It's familiar.

In a moment your resolve shatters when you realize what you did, the wound you left in Riku's side is wet with blood. Were it not for her unusually tough physiology it might be bleeding freely to the point of being life-ending.

But even now she has only kind words for you, offering only encouragement. If she'd resented you for it you would understand that. If she got angry at your total lapse of control it would almost be easier. But instead she tries to embrace you... and it kills you inside that you have to reject her. If she did so in this situation you would hurt her even more by accident.

As you seal this new 'Segunda Etapa' and return to your resting state, you find your body utterly sapped of strength. The intensity of the fight, of the moment, has taken a stunning toll. But as your vision dims and your mind grows hazy you have one reassuring thought.

You know, without a doubt, that she will catch you.

You are Captain Kuchiki Byakuya, and you have a problem.

The enemy you are meant to defeat, a quincy by the name of Askin Nakk le Varr, has an ability which is particularly troublesome for a shinigami such as yourself. This is his ability to gain immunity to reiatsu, which negates kidō entirely as a combat strategy as well as preventing you from making full use of hakuda and zanjutsu.

But worst, it may preclude the use of a physical-type zanpakutō such as your own Senbonzakura. Despite not being of the kidō-type classification, all zanpakutō utilize spiritual particles that have been compressed and given a physical shape.

If your opponent can gain a resistance to zanpakutō, then even a Captain would certainly be defeated.

As such, your decision is to rely purely on bare-handed combat. You even find yourself contemplating more unorthodox and underhanded techniques not suited to one of noble standing such as yourself.

What you have to do is prevent him from using any of his more powerful techniques, same as how you have been prevented from using your own. And the best way to do that is to stay close to him, within easy striking distance, in hopes that his speed and skill at fighting unarmed are not greater than your own.

A swift step brings you into the proper distance, and Askin Nakk le Varr seems surprised that you attack him with your fists alone. He quickly raises his arms to block your attacks, taking what you vaguely realize to be a stance appropriate to a western boxer. Your fist stops, and you follow up with another jab which meets similar results. So you decide to take a slightly different approach.

Instead you use a flash step to slip around his side, aiming a right hook at the back of your enemy's head. The blow meets his wrist again as he pivots on his foot to bring a high outside guard into the right position, expertly adjusting to your change in strategy.

“Not bad,” he compliments you, producing a folding bow of some sort from around his arm. A single spiritual arrow pierces your chest.

“But not good enough.”

Askin's eyes widen as your deception becomes apparent, your empty haori falling to the ground as you attack with a straight thrust of Senbonzakura's blade aimed for the middle of his spine.

But his own step is just as quick as your own, leaving your blade to pass through nothing but empty space as he aims to shoot you in the back yourself.

“Byakurai.”

You release the kidō backwards to give yourself a little breathing room, having left your left hand free to fire the spell from your fingertips. But predictably he simply takes the shot through his side, using it as an opportunity to begin working to inoculate himself against your reiatsu.

You will need to work quickly now if your goal is still to win.

>Release Senkonzakura Kageyoshi, use your Bankai to try and kill the quincy in one attack.

You invert Senbonzakura's blade, and drop it point-first to the ground.

“Bankai: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi.”

Askin's eyes narrow as he realizes what you've done, and watches the many towering blades created by your Bankai as they manifest. “Well now, I can't say I anticipated you going all-out like this on the first date.”

The blades dissipate and scatter like a million cherry blossoms on the breeze, and Askin instinctively dodges... only to find himself taking a punch to the eyes that causes him to stumble.

The pure white scarf you wear around your neck comes off, wrapping tightly around your enemy's neck. That you would resort to such an attack would already be seen by those who know you as a sign of obvious desperation, to use the precious silken heirloom of the Kuchiki clan to do it doubly so.

But you stepped too close, giving Askin a free shot at your ribs with his elbow. A free shot which he takes immediately, before you can strangle him to death. Your scarf, the value of ten mansions in the Seireitei, flutters to the ground as you release it in a moment of pain from your liver. He turns just as quickly with a small, darkly-colored ball in his hand which you barely manage to avoid slamming directly into your gut.

He hit you hard though, as the sharp pain and the taste of blood will attest.

You may not be able to afford to make such a mistake again.

You have to turn things around, and quickly. At this rate you won't have time to do it slowly.

It's embarrassing having to rely on your Bankai just to survive.

Silently, you direct the many dancing blades of Senbonzakura Kageyoshi to move towards your enemy, who manages to evade your attacks with the same controlled, expert movements you've seen from him so far. Though as much as he should be praised for his dexterity, you have to admit that you find his utter lack of respect to be a constant nuisance.

“That was close.”

“Whoops.”

“You almost got it that time.”

Each time you narrowly miss him he taunts you for it, every time you attack it seems more and more obvious that he's cutting it close deliberately to keep you from realizing it.

“Oh, so you finally noticed?”

In an instant his own rapid movement places him within arm's reach of you, where he tries once more to use that same technique that you narrowly evaded the last time.

“That you have been looking for weaknesses in my technique?” you summarize.

Askin Nakk le Varr smirks. “It wasn't hard to figure out the most obvious weakness. Really I was trying to get used to your speed.”

You narrowly evade a rapid series of jabs with the darkened reishi sphere, and the quincy wielding it manages to keep extremely close... so close that you can't safely use Senbonzakura against him.

“And you already think you've done that?” you press.

He shrugs. “I can tell you've been varying your speed to keep me off guard, and that you're holding back on using your hands. My guess is that'd make your attacks faster.”

Damn, so he's already figured out so much in such a short time. And by now you have to imagine he has built up an immunity to your kidō as well, meaning that your options for fighting back are slowly being narrowed down.

The one optimistic point you could observe is that despite all this, he has yet to hit you with an offensive technique.

>Bring Senbonzakura in closer, take a risk to target his tendons and ligaments.

So he's figured out the limits of your safe zone, and managed to get close enough to you that it gives him a chance to avoid their blades and the possibility that you might instantly kill him with a sufficiently powerful attack. That would be his greatest weakness of course... if an attack kills him outright, he won't have a chance to recover.

If that's how he wants to fight, you have a perfect answer to that.

The area around the two of you darkens as Senbonzakura's blades withdraw, “Senkei.”

Askin takes an instant step away from you, anticipating a powerful, immediate attack. But finding none, his eyes narrow slightly in suspicion.

“What are you planning?”

“You should be grateful,” you insist as the countless blades coalesce into hundreds of full-sized swords, virtual copies of Senbonzakura's sealed form. “I do not simply show this form to anyone who thinks themselves a worthy foe.”

“I see,” he realizes aloud, eyes widening slightly now after having been narrowed. “You compressed them into more solid forms, but those are still the tiny little shards you've been using so far. I should probably avoid getting hit by those.”

“Most people would tend to prefer living to dying,” you muse, “so yes. But if you wish to challenge their deadliness and take a direct hit, I would not be dissatisfied.”

“You seem like a proud sort of a guy,” Askin muses. “So I'll refrain from that. After all, what would it do to your pride to have your opponent simply hand you victory?”

“So you understand your position?” you ask, as one of Senbonzakura Kageyoshi's numerous blades drops into your waiting hand. You hold back on your instinct to attack immediately, depriving your opponent of an easily anticipated movement against which to launch a counterattack.

“Better than you give me credit for,” he insists, finally seeming to muster a little seriousness in his tone. “Most people tend to write me off as a bit of a lazy idiot, even among the Sternritter. They forget that I didn't get where I am by being strong or weak, but by not dying... being underestimated suits those ends just fine.”

He re-summons his bow, the weapon springing forth from around his outstretched wrist, and 'nocks' a spiritual arrow.

>That doesn't seem unreasonable. So tell me, before one of us dies, what ARE your ends, really?
>He's reverted to his reishi weapon? Something doesn't sit right about this, he may be luring you into a trap.
>Close combat is the specialty of this form, and most quincy are ranged experts. Trap or no, you have an advantage up close.

“And what are your ends?” you ask, leveling your blade so that the point falls right in the line of your gaze between his eyes and yours. “What do you hope to achieve in dedicating your service to the traitorous criminal Aizen Sōsuke?”

The quincy produces one of those little spheres of his in one hand. “Let me answer your question with a question.”

“If you must.”

“What do you hope to accomplish by opposing him?” the quincy counters with a stern look in his eyes. “What are you so afraid of?”

“Nothing,” you insist quietly. “It is my duty as head of the Kuchiki Clan to see that traitors to the Seireitei are given the ends which they deserve. That is all.”

“And I don't particularly care for your laws,” Askin Nakk le Varr sighs. “I have lived for a long time, Captain. Far longer than the time usually allotted to humans, and probably for longer than any human should.”

“And your point?”

“It's boring,” he admits. “So boring there was a while there that I wished I could die. But this rebellion of Aizen's... it's all so damned interesting, isn't it? Even a lot of the guys on our own side think he's just trying to destroy everything, but it's more than that.”

“More than that?” you press. “In what sense?”

“He's trying to create something new,” Askin insists firmly. “That's something I wanna see... aren't you even the least bit curious to know it too? Or is curiosity something that only humans have after all?”

“I do not particularly care,” you admit, charging with your sword.

Askin evades, as do you when he tries to hit you with his reishi orbs. Then he tries to shoot you with the bow, only to raise it to parry your blade as you swing it at him from behind. This back-and-forth lasts for a few seconds, before you see your opportunity.

You call down a second sword like silver lightning, which pierces Askin Nakk le Varr's right wrist from the left. His eyes widen in shock, and in the same instant when he reaches to pull the blade out you impale the sword in your own hand through his left wrist.

Firmly grasping the hilts of both swords, you allow the many shards to expand into two pink clouds that erupt from Askin's arms.

Askin immediately disengages, almost without it ever registering that he's lost his arms below the elbow. He spares a glance at the arms he left behind on the ground, then glances down at his stumps and sighs.

“Great,” he grumbles. “There goes my fallback career as a concert pianist.”

“You don't seem too concerned that you've lost your arms,” you observe.

“I'm not,” he admits. “Because unlike you I've still got places to go.”

“Vollständig: Hasshein.”

The quincy's released form is accompanied by a burst of reiatsu, and from his back extend a pair of almost wing-like formations. Though to call them 'wings' is a bit of a misnomer as they bear no resemblance to anything indicated by that word. Instead they take the form of a series of circles connected by beams of reishi. Similar circular formations adorn his wrists and waist, and he wears a thin, transparent visor over his eyes.

It hardly looks the part of a form meant for combat, but this raw power is disconcerting.

“Gift Ball Delux.”

In an instant you feel as though your breath has been knocked out of you, dropping you to your knee and causing you to abruptly break out in a sweat.

His full released form gives him the ability to expand his power to such a great area, so swiftly... it's a technique intended not to be survivable that short of instant teleportation cannot be dodged.

Essentially, a perfect attack.

“Was that... supposed to kill me?” you force the words from your mouth and struggle to your feet.

“No,” Askin admits. “Though it would have been convenient if it had. To make a Gift Ball this large and potentially powerful... I'll admit, I tend to subconsciously dial back its intensity. I'm not a hundred percent sure that it can't affect me too if I make it too strong you see, and it's probably for the best that I never get to find out.”

“It's a little like your own zanpakutō in that sense, don't you think?”

“In a sense,” you admit, raising your blade.

“See, I can appreciate that about you,” Askin praises you. “You and I share a certain sense of aesthetics. You'd rather defeat me using your zanpakutō... Senbonzakura, was it? Likewise, I find it most elegant to beat you using my Deathdealing. Anything else would just be too barbaric for my tastes.”

You may only have one more chance, and knowing this you throw caution completely to the wind.

Your remaining reiatsu and all of the reishi of your Bankai coalesce in a blinding white, forming wings behind your back and flowing through the sword in your hands. Even Askin raises one of his stumps to shield his eyes for a moment.

“Shūkei Hakuteiken,” you declare. “This is the pinnacle of my abilities. You are only the third person to see it.”

“Thanks for that,” Askin replies, finally lowering his arm. “I have to admit, Captain: I like your style. I'll be all too happy to give you everything I've got and let it ride!”

“May the best man win!”

You charge him, ground crumbling beneath your feat as you push off and wings letting you glide through your flash step, smooth and swift as can be. You only wish that cat-devil Yoruichi could see it through this dark hemisphere of reishi.

But in the last second, you notice it: two hands attached to severed stumps zip past you, pulled by faintly glowing threads of reishi. They meet the stumps at the end of Askin's arms as he raises them to block your sword, which is caught between his wrists.

In an instant he shifts his stance, pushing your blade aside with his right wrist as you pass and slamming the palm of his left hand into your ribs... along with something else.

You tumble to the ground.

“To answer your question that was called Ransōtengai, and I'd be careful if I were you,” Askin cautions you. “Your own reiatsu will poison you, so if you wanna live I'd suggest not lifting a finger until this is all over. Otherwise you'll just die pointlessly.”

“Why?” you demand. “Is this some twisted game to you?”

“Far from it,” Askin glances down at you while his arms seem to slowly reassemble themselves. “You may not like me, but I can respect you Captain Kuchiki. So I've decided I'm not gonna kill you after all, even if Aizen'd prefer it that way.”

“I want you to see how this ends. That's all there is to it.”

And that's going to be it for this evening, unfortunately. Since I was deprived of a good night's sleep last night I'm already exhausted, so I'll need to turn in early.

Thanks for stopping in, hope you enjoyed the read, and look forward to picking this up next weekend.

I'll also try and squeeze in another omake some time during the week.

Askin hasn't actually done anyone serious harm has he? Got to admit he's starting to grow on me, might not be a bad guy.

Also for an omake idea, how about a look at how the characters still in Las Noches are doing/coping after the infiltration?

He's the honorable prick type, which i love. And i totally get his motivation, although he's going about it wrong.
