Hey if anyone is still around I'll try to run this for a bit. Forgive me if I'm a bit slow tho. Also bumping for more halfling art

Your band of halflings have been traveling north for several weeks. The air is getting colder and the ground is getting rougher with each day. Finally you find a pleasant albeit awfully rocky valley in the crux of two mountain ranges. Many streams flow through the area with temperate forests following the water down the rocky hills. You wonder if the climate is right for raising the large frogs your tribe was known for back home. You also can't help but wonder if your tribe will ever return there. Climbing to the highest hill you can find, you see vast hilly plains with antelope and very large bison grazing. They can also be observed going into the forest for shelter and water. Perhaps this is a good place for you to do the same. Hopefully the terrible beasts you fled from will not follow you up here.

The tribe begins to establish a new settlement on a clear area near water, but this ground is too rocky to easily construct the comfy hobbit holes that they are accustomed to. After many failed attempts and experiments, several small cabins of rock and wood begin to appear. They are quite drafty and cramped, but they tried to build into the hillside wherever possible. Hopefully with a bit more effort the tribe will be able to make enough to house everyone in relative comfort.
>Shanty Town 50%

Your people were never big on hunting, but without knowledge of the local flora and having missed the planting season, you've decided to focus your efforts on hunting with surprising success. The slingers bring back all manner of small game and even manage to knock a few goats off of their cliffs. Meanwhile others take the chance to test their skill with the new "boes" they received from the tallfolk last year. They find that they work much better on large game, and bring back many deer and antelope. The hunters also report groups of large cats roaming the grassy hills along with wolves. At least these predators are smaller than back home. The streams also have fish, bass, perch, trout, etc. although they did not have much luck in catching them. You expect the hunters should be able to keep up with demand for meat under normal conditions.
>Food +2

You remember some of the tallfolk sitting on the backs of giant deer and holding strange birds when they visited, you see no giant deer here, only these bison, and they seem even larger. A few hunters managed to bring back baby orphaned antelope and goats, but most were not able to make it without their mothers. The birds include mostly typical fare such as songbirds and various birds of prey, but you do occasionally see groups of large condors high overhead.
The frogs you brought with you have fortunately been in a torpor thanks to the drought, but without some ponds, they will not be able to revive and mate in the spring.

With the air getting even colder than anyone in the tribe has yet experienced, they redouble their efforts on building shelters, building several more shacks and sealing the gaps with mud and straw. These aren't nearly as comfortable as back home, but with a nice fire and family inside, they are confident that they will manage just fine.
>T0 Shanty Town - Complete

With winter approaching, Farmer Froggybottoms has been complaining more and more loudly that if his 3-year reigning champion Belzy doesn't get some proper lodging, she won't survive to win next years competition. Most of the tribe agrees, but mainly because they're craving some good country-style froglegs.
So they proceed to the nearest stream and attempt to divert it into a large hole they dug out of the hillside. Unfortunately the rocky ground foiled them again and the water drained out just as quickly as it went in. After many long, muddy and frustrating weeks, they finally managed to get a small pond to hold water. Its not nearly enough to start a proper breeding operation, but at least it should be enough to revive the existing frogs so they can start eating again.
>T0 Frog Pond 30%

Taking the large baskets from their hiding place, the halflings dig out ten large balls of mud and place them on the bank of their pond. After several hours, the tribe rejoices to hear the comforting sound of deep throaty croaking in the crisp night air. But unfortunately the frogherd returns to camp and delivers the news that old Belzy did not survive. As Farmer Froggybottoms mourns, the rest of the tribe wonders who next year's champion will be.
> -1 prized bullfrog

After the deaths of several young animals, the hunters wrack their brains for an idea of how to feed the 3 kids and 1 baby antelope still in their care. As the animals get more thin and weak, the farmers, completely out of options, plead with their wives to nurse the pitiful creatures. As they stammer on about how goats and antelope are the wave of the future, the women, though uneasy, can't stand to watch the creatures starve. This arrangement however is very taxing, and the hunters are not getting any favors for quite awhile.

While you already have basic stone tools, given the rocky environment here, you decide to try and make some more robust implements to increase productivity. Unfortunately no one seems to have any luck on improving tool design, and quality materials are few and far between. You do manage to replace all the shovels and hoes you broke trying to dig ponds though.
>Replenished tool supply, ideations of better craftsmanship.

Speaking of which, concerns arose about the pond not being deep enough for the frogs to winter-over. As workers began to deepen the pond, it sprung a leak (thanks again rocks) and by the time it was repaired another frog had succumbed to the cold air. Furious over making the pond worse instead of better, the tribe decided to cut their losses and pray for a mild winter.
>-1 Bullfrog, lost progress on Pond(1/5)

Fortunately their prayers were answered and a mild winter was indeed had. The remaining frogs were even able to continue hunting instead of hibernating as long as they returned to the mud before dark.

After several months of sore udders, the baby mammals were finally weaned and some normalcy was able to return to the wetnurses's family lives. Except now these little creatures were making a terrible mess in the houses and following the beleaguered women everywhere. Over the winter however, the creatures eventually began to learn some manners as their new mothers swatted them with wooden spoons and attempted to discipline them the only way they knew how.

With the onset of spring in a new land, the halflings are itching to rebuild their farms. Though the rocky land hampers progress as usual, They have little trouble finding local edibles to cultivate and several of the seeds they brought with them are expected to grow just fine with a little irrigation. Unfortunately many of the spices from down home do not seem to take root, much to the tribes dismay.
>T1 Farm (1/4)

Meanwhile some intrepid souls decide to better explore the surrounding countryside. The forests are rather sparse actually, more like broad bands of trees surrounding the various streams. However, upon following one stream uphill to figure out why the woods suddenly stopped halfway up the hill, they found that the stream flows from a decent sized cave. It is a bit chilly due to the water, but feels good compared to the warm spring afternoon. Perhaps this place could be used for something.
>Discovered Cave

The frogs seem to be doing fine physically, although the males seem to spend too much time fighting over territory in their tiny pond. But they're certainly not starving. Meanwhile the baby goats and antelope are almost as tall as the average halfling and bounce around climbing on houses and generally causing mischief. A few goatherds has been appointed to try and keep them in check but these stubborn things still don't like to listen and can often be found dragging their trainers around by the leash. Perhaps we need a better way to contain them for lessons.

The warm weather makes everyone want to sit around the campfire and tell stories. Sitting around listening to the elders, you learn the, actually not so distant, past of your people.
In the beginnings, your people dwelled in caves and burrows in the foothills of the mountains to the south. Everything was yummy food and comfy dwellings until a group of trolls appeared from the underground and drove the halflings away. Following the river eastward, they discovered a place of rolling hills and fertile wetlands.
Here they made new burrows, gardens and discovered the Beelzebufo which made easy livestock. However, one summer day a ginormous lizard tore through the village, devouring everything in its path before disappearing to the south as quickly as it arrived. Determined not to leave such prime real estate so easily, they built a watch tower and developed the sling for defense. All was well for several more years and they even made contact with a group of tallfolk from the north, who gave them bows and clothes. A few of the tallfolk even stayed to exchange languages. But one night they were attacked by a vicious new enemy. Several bipedal lizards the size of a deer appeared in the middle of town and began picking off anyone they could find with unnatural ferocity, including one of the visitors, before melting into the shadows. When the tallfolk returned to retrieve their companions, they found the Halfling village in paranoia and disarray. Their shaman believed that this was no ordinary monster attack and suggested that the halflings move north at least temporarily, to hopefully avoid the reptilian invaders and be closer to assistance until the situation could be investigated further.
The elder council agreed and thus the tribe once again packed up and moved north until they found a new locale and began the chapter that we now inhabit.

The farm is coming along slowly but surely.
>T1 Farm (2/4)

The carpenters come up with an idea that should hopefully be able to keep the new animals contained, the split rail fence. Although it is not yet as effective as they had hoped, as both animals are notorious jumpers and climbers, they are sure that a bit more tweaking should have it up and running.
>T1 Animal Pen (2/3)

With the introduction of the unfinished pen, and the animals getting more mellow as they mature, the shepherds are able to start teaching them how to follow a handler and even carry small loads. Although they are still not yet big enough for riding, the tribe is now confident that when the pen is completed, they will be well on the way to taming these beasts at their current level of skill. Now the tribe only need decide what exactly the plan is for raising these animals. (food, work, mounts, horns, height, weight, speed, etc.)
>T2 Husbandry 50%
Tribe will now begin passively growing the herd. May either halt research or choose a new objective for the additional 50%.

Some halflings got the idea to use the cave as a root cellar for food storage. However, upon returning to check on the food stored there, they found some of the baskets had been nibbled by rats and some of the dried meat had a light coating of white fuzz. While many still believe it to be a good idea, it would probably require some way to keep the food dry and animal-proof.

While this year, ground was cleared and plants were planted, the farm wasn't ready to start producing on a village-feeding level. Wanting to make sure that it is ready for next year, the tribe rallies and completes the farm plot before the winter snows begin. Now the farmers just need to wait for spring.
>T1 Farm completed

Meanwhile some one of the cave explorers decided to find a solution for their cold storage problem. Using a few pots they received from the tallfolk as a model, he attempted to replicate them by making mud bowls and putting them in the fireplace. While stoking the fire, eagerly awaiting the results of the experiment, he heard a sudden loud POP! as glowing hot embers and shrapnel errupted from the fireplace. The resulting calamity claimed not only his life, but burned three houses and killed two more in the process. This might be a problem with winter just around the corner.

Sorry I've been so sluggish. Imma try to pick things up and maybe have an encounter later.

This winter has the tribe experience its first real freeze and the leather tunics and furs that the tallfolk left are becoming hotly contested items. So naturally a few inquisitive minds decided to wile away the hours in front of a fire trying to replicate them. Unfortunately they had no leads as to how such a feat was accomplished. After several stinky and rotten failed attempts, they finally managed to make something approximating hairy cardboard that makes decent insulation as long as it stays dry.
>T1 Leatherworking (1/10)

Meanwhile other curious souls decide to attempt replicating bows. They soon discover many ways not to make a bow.For starters, the sap flow causes the wood to be less flexible this time of year, and even in the right time of year, the trees of this arid region are generally too gnarly and tough. As one fellow tried to apply enough tension to set the string, the bow snapped and flung the splittered end straight through his eye.
>-1 Pop

Although it was quite a rush-job the tribe managed to rebuild the burnt huts in time to keep everyone sheltered in relative comfort. The hunters didn't have any luck finding new goats or antelope for the herd, but they'll be sure to bring them in when they do. As they spend the winter cooped up in their drafty shacks, some begin to dream about having some nice warm spices from back home to season the mostly bland food up here. Sure the local area has various mints, spring onions and the like, but nothing's quite like the way momma used to make it.

As the world begins to come back into bloom, one fellow with a particularly bad case of cabin fever dashes out of the house desperate for some fresh air and new flavors in his diet. He roams around the woods for a bit until he finds a patch of lovely yellow flowers with succulent stems and leaves. Eagerly scurrying over, he plucks one and gives it a long smell, before stuffing it into his mouth quickly followed by an entire handful, and another. When he is discovered, his face is green and his lips are covered in white foam. He stopped breathing quite awhile ago.
>-1 Pop

While some halflings got cabin-fever over the long winter, others got an ear-full of complaining from the various frogherds. There hasn't been a competition in two years! Plus none of the frogs actually bred last year. Seems the poor, cramped conditions kept them too stressed. So finally the village gets to work to improve the pond. Fortunately, thanks to past experience in how not to dig rocky soil, the work is unchallenging and considerable progress is made.
>T0 Frog Pond(3/5)

Sinking his hands into the mud of the pond and looking pensively into the water, one young chap recalls the cave springs and the terrible fire of last year. After several minutes, he clenches his fists, squeezing the mud between his fingers. He then glances cautiously behind him before proceeding to scoop up a large glob of mud into his basket and scampering off behind the hill with it. Afraid that others might frown upon such dangerous pursuits, and resolved to not repeat the reckless mistakes of poor ole Folcard, he conducts his research over a campfire in a hidden alcove. After several weeks of small pops and general batch failures, he discovers that clay that has been left to dry for several days before being fired has much less chance of exploding and is a bit more resistant to water than previous attempts. The slow march of progress has officially begun.
>T1 Pottery(1/10)

In other news, excited farmers begin planting new crops in earnest and new livestock is added to the fold. While a few poor women are forced to nurse chompy young goats, some of the older animals escaped their herders only to return the newt day, pregnant. When these doe deliver, the halfling women gladly turn over their charges to be adopted by mothers of the appropriate species.

On a the warm spring day, a trio of adventurous halflings decide to go on walkabout.
Packing some supplies, they proceed to head north through the mountain pass. The first few days are uneventful, the scenery is much the same as what they've grown accustomed too. As they make camp on the third night however, they get an eerie sense that they're being watched. One even claims that he can hear faint wailing on the crisp night wind.
After a night of poor sleep, they decide that its too early to chicken-out and press on, cautiously weaving through the craggy foothills.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKImmIQ4omQ
About mid-day, as they stop for lunch, they suddenly can all hear the strange wailing sound. Its strangely melodious and compels them to creep up to peek over the nearest hill, still not entirely sure where its coming from due to the hills echo. After a few tense minutes of squinting around in the distance, they see it.

A procession of tallfolk glide over the rocky terrain along with several elk laden with supplies and also several wolves. A large green bird flies down to one of the folk and the procession turns your direction.

As the parties meet, you notice that the tallfolk number about ten, tan-skinned and dark haired folk from the tribe of the mighty forest. All are wearing padded throw-over vests and each person is adorned with different animal style head-dresses and masks. A few wear gleaming feather boas around their necks. All are armed with spears and longbows along with axes and clubs as side arms. However, you also can't help but notice that they are accompanied by nearly twice as many shorter folk sitting atop the elk, about your size actually, but green and swarthy looking. One meets your curious eye and nods deeply, placing a clawed hand over its long nose. They are outfitted in a similar manner, but without the masks and headgear. Greetings are made, as a few of your group actually speak their language and visa versa.

They claim they are headed south, to visit your tribe and speak with the elder there.

As you approach the village, a few of the elves are drawn to the sound of the frogs and make a beeline for the pond on the outskirts. After going around and crouching to look at each frog for a minute, a couple of elves begin an eerie song as they doff their tunics and dig through their packs. The one with a flower crown pulls out a handful of berries while the other pulls a wolf mask over her face. Continuing to sing, they wade out into the mud and embrace the frog known by all as Jorge Vashinkon, rubbing the berries over his skin, turning him deep purple. After several minutes the song ends with a mighty croak from Jorge as he leaps clear across the pond. He went from being one of the most sluggish frogs to the most active one since the migration. The elves then gather their things and return to the main group.

Arriving at hobbitsville proper, they place several pots of tree sap a pile of soft furs and baskets of large red fruits the size of your head in the middle of the common meeting area.
>Culture Facts: Who is in charge here anyway? A leader? A council? An autonomous collective taking turns as a sort of executive officer of the week?

As a few of the elves and goblins visit with the curious villagers, the rest set up a camp on the outskirts of town and proceed back to the pond with digging sticks in hand.
That night over a fire in the headman's hut, the elves leaders explain that their shaman has been very concerned that the reptilian problem to the south could cause great grief for both our peoples. And after many moons of prayer and meditation, he received a vision, and they are here to act upon it. The goblins are searching for their lost compatriots who are also believed to be in the terrible lizards territory, so they have come too.
The plan is to return to your old village site(#2) and fortify it as a base while making raids into raptor land. However, they could really use ~10 skilled carpenters to aid in construction and any warriors and food you could offer would certainly be appreciated. They fully expect to be back before year's end, although they can leave a few speedy elves behind to act as messengers if you can supply a few warriors to replace them.

Traditionally the patriarchs of the largest families of the tribe have formed the council that has ruled. The council elects an leader in times of turmoil.
Strong willed Largo Proudfoot has been leader since the abandoning of the last village.

Well elves seem like strange, but nice enough folk.
>host an feast for our visitors

>offer full aid for the campaing, 10 hobbits armed with bows, 10 carpenters and food that we can spare without risking an famine.
Our farms should give good harvest during the autumn anyway.
Big risk senting so much of our population, but it is the best change to get rid of those lizards
