“You said there was a place with some new imported books you wanted to check out.” He’d mentioned that the city was in a pretty hard to get spot, nice though it was, so imports were rare and valuable. That meant that a lot of hard-to-get material, be it fashion, tools, crafting materials...or in his case, books. He didn’t mention what types, but you were less concerned with that, and more concerned with just what OTHER rarities you might come across. Anything good enough and maybe you could find a way to get it for yourself…

Hello, eager beavers, and welcome back to Magical Girl For Hire Quest! You know the usual spiel by now, but long story short:

-Currently, you're on a mission as a kid's summons to help him pass his final exam so that he can become a full summoner. You're currently known as Kyria, a triple eyed, fairy-like summon constantly expounding magical energy, and you've...caught a lot of attention. You've managed to keep anyone from getting TOO antsy about you, though...for now. At any rate, after passing his first exam, the Test of Clarity, with time to spare, the two of you have been granted the rest of the day off.

"Oh yeah! Over here!" And after crossing a couple of alleys, you finally come upon a rather fancy sign out in front of a particularly green and gold building; out front a sign in big, emerald green embossed letters: ‘Flutterby Books and Mossfield Cafe’. It looked sizable enough, and you could see several patrons outside reading books and casually enjoying various snacks, much like more modern bookstores and cafes. Seems like this is doing well for itself.

As you walk in, you notice that there’s...actually quite a number of people and summons here, looking on the shelves for books or otherwise investigating. There even seems to be a bit of a squabble in the corner between two summons over a small, pastel colored book, though it’s the way your client easily bounds up to the long-haired man at the counter that catches your eye. “Hey, Lance!”

‘Lance’ is engrossed in a book himself, a large eyed, six-armed monkey creature on his shoulders that seems just as interested, though it is the first to look at him- and then you, upon which the startled jerk he gives is enough to make him fall backwards, sending both him and summoner tumbling. “Whoa!” He nearly slams into the back wall, but his summon manages to catch himself, pushing them both back. It takes a second for him to shake off the shock. “Yikes, dude, what the heck? What’s goin’ on here?”

“Huh? Oh, right, this is my summon Kyrie, Kyrie, this is Lance, owner of Flutterby Books. Don’t worry, Lance, she’s cool!” It all comes out in a rush such that you’re wondering if he’s actually getting kind of tired of it. Either way, you afford him a brief wave, but decide to stay silent for now. You’re getting enough stares.

Lance just glances at you a bit longer before shaking his head. “Iiiiif you’re sure little man. Sooo...you heard we got some new stuff in, huh?”

Lysan nods eagerly. “Yeah! Anything up my alley? Y’know, the usual?”

cont.
>>
>>2939577
Lance puts a hand to his chin, thinking. “Hmmm...well, might be a couple things you’d be interested in. One in particular.” He leans over, whispering now. “Ever heard of the Grey Codex?” Lysan shakes his head. “Yeah, me neither ‘till the guy bought it in. Says he got it from some sorta ancient ruin waaay to the north. Been keepin’ it off the shelves ‘cause I wanna take a looksee at it sometime later. No clue what it’s about, but dude says he took a look at it, thinks it might be some kinda old rulebook written in a dead language. For what, I dunno, but it SOUNDS legendary. Either way, he didn’t want it, so I scored it off him.”

Hm. You’re not sure what that might entail, either, but you can’t deny he does well at making it sound exciting. And then Lance straightens up, a shit-eating grin on his face. “Oh, and I got what SOUNDS like the latest book in your favorite ‘Dusty the Friendly Fairy’ series, so-”

“AGH! Zip it!” Hm. This place IS mostly books, so…

That'd be the funny option.

An interesting option would be a nanotech book-form of a FutureSight created by another universe-hopping civilization. Handler said that there are others aside from the Dealmakers, just that the Dealmakers are the best at that form of travel.
So it'd be interesting to see what the competition is like (when the competition is a bunch of food carts and trucks while we're a globe-spanning multi-national conglomerate with a vertical monopoly).

Hm. Thinking about it, there’s mainly one book that interests you. “I’d like to take a look at that ‘Codex’, if you don’t mind.”

The way him and his monkey-beast jumps again has you wondering if he’s just skittish. “Wha? Uh, I mean...I guess? I take a break in like, fifteen minutes. I can show it to you then.”

Lysan raises an eyebrow. “Why do you wanna see it?” And then he blinks, realizing. “Wait...do you think you can read it?”

“It’s likely,” you admit. You can see the monkey-thing squint at you (an effect surprisingly magnified by how big its eyes are), but it doesn’t say anything to oppose you.

Lance, meanwhile, just shrugs as you look backwards, seeing another customer stop about 5 feet behind you, trying to wave and get the man’s attention. “Alright, hang out here and I’ll get it in a bit. Oh, and Ly, don’t worry, I’ll have your pixie stuff, too!” He quickly calls out ‘next in line!’ before Lysan can say anything about it, and the two of you shuffle to the side, Lysan grumbling to himself.

You tilt your head slightly at his antics. This book can’t be THAT bad, can it? Ah well, not your business. You’re more interested in seeing something else. “So...would you mind too much if I went browsing a bit in the meantime?”

“Oh? Yeah, sure, if you want.” he allows. “Just don’t...I dunno, get into trouble or anything. People are scared enough of you…”

“Not to worry,” you reassure him as you step away. So now you’ve got a bit of time. Might as well see if there’s anything else worth your curiosity. If nothing else, it’s good that all the imported stuff is marked with a sticker saying so…

In particular, there’s a bin of imported, yet unsorted books that people are occasionally digging through. As you sift through, almost immediately your eyes latch onto something that strikes your interest- it’s some type of old paperback book, that honestly looks more like a manual more than anything else. Titleless, you can see why it wouldn’t be all that attractive to the common layperson...but for someone like you?

Flipping through it, you note that it seems to be fairly sketch-heavy; a number of diagrams of what you recognize as both summoning circles, motions, and even various creatures. From what text there is in there, however, you notice that it’s as much a manual as it is a bestiary; some kind of manuscript that seems to outline specifics as to how to summon certain creatures and...imbue them with power? Interesting indeed. There are simpler ones as well as more complicated methodologies, the latter half of the book seeming to be, from what you can gather, a treatise on how to summon simple monsters without using anything but a focus. You’re not sure how valuable this is, but...considering how big summoning is here, you’d be surprised if it’s not worth holding onto.

Sifting through the pile even more, you come across another book, this one old as well, but with a half-inch thick leatherbound cover who’s title catches your interest, although you can tell it’s in a different language: ‘To Rend the Beyond.’ This one is...you’re not sure, but the preface seems to indicate that it’s about using the raw energies of the dimensional plane that summons come from, explaining how summons come to be, and how both they and that energy can be controlled.

Something’s bugging you about it, though...as you turn the book end over end, you can’t help but squint...it feels like something might be inside of it- if only because it feels like the back cover might be heavier than the front. You’re not certain, but…

Before you can get too into it, however, you hear a commotion in the front- and then glass breaking, just before things turn into all-out yelling.

cont.
>>
>>2940692
Running to the front mostly out of concern for your ward, you find him stuck between a table and the wall, a shattered glass cup nearby the source of the break. Hovering nearby and causing everyone to cower is a large, bipedal lizard looking summon, colored like an oncoming storm and eyes like blue thunder. He’s even got a pretty large sword strapped to his back. The reptile’s eyes are fierce as he paces the grounds, but no one’s daring to approach him- despite their numbers, he seems to be by far the largest here. “Now see here! I been polite, since my boss said so, BUT he also said to GET THAT BOOK BACK. Now the fink what stole it said he pawned it off here, so I’ll give ya just but a moment ta fork it over- ‘less you sold it already! Give ya till the count of five b’fore I lose my temper!”

Well...that won’t do. Not now that he’s basically threatening your client.

That doesn’t seem like the contemporary usage of “basically”.
Every example of “basically” I’ve seen used has it mean that the actions taken or words spoken, simplify into an essential action.
So if he’s basically threatening Lysan, he doesn’t have to be saying “I’m gonna cut ya” while explicitly waving his sword under Lysan’s nose, to be threatening Lysan.

Your voice is loud and clear, and he immediately turns your way as you make your way forward. “That will make two of us.” Planting your feet, you level a solid glare at him before continuing in a hiss, making sure your three eyes are locked on his pair. “Stand down before I reduce it to one.”

His eyes widen at your countenance, and there’s a flinch from him, before turning into a scowl. “Sooo...got somethin’ worth hidin’, then.”

“Only my annoyance at your tantrum implicitly threatening my summoner,” you respond easily. “One last chance.”

Lysan tries to croak out a response, his voice clearly dry now. “K-kyyyria...wwhhhhaa…”

Lance manages to stutter out something, himself. “C-can you, y’know...take it outside?”

A hiss is all his response is as you see him bare a set of wicked claws. You’ve got a number of book aisles to the back of you, and to your left is the counter, and closer to where this interloper is facing you. To your right, tables and the more ‘cafe’ oriented part of the building, near where Lysan is.

I'm not keen on wonton collateral damage, but we don't have the minimum collateral Rider, so it's not a major issue.

Whatever i will just shut up the votes are locked anyways. Also it won't since people could simply move out of the way and take cover. With they blinded they will get in the way and more likely to be hurt uf we take the fight more deep into the store.

Anon, what do you do when you accidentally look into the sun right after coming out of a dark room? Because I cover my eyes, hurl insults at the sun and keep going because it only took 3 seconds to recover.
Worst thing that will happen here is someone trips on something and hits the floor with their face.
>>
>>2941025
First of your comparisong has nothing to do with the current situation. The current situation should be what would you do if a armed tug entered the dinner threated everyone and suddenly someone throwed a flashbang grenade in the room?

Also i'm not idiot to look directly to the sun i know better.
>>
>>2941029
>and suddenly someone throwed a flashbang grenade in the room?
So that means most of the people go down, and the remaining people can pile up on the LONE assailant.

>Also i'm not idiot to look directly to the sun i know better.
And we have the advantage there because they don't know that in mere fragments of a second we can be as GROSSLY INCANDESCENT as the sun.
>>
>>2941038
Or they panic and start to trample other people. But again this is the worst possible situation. Who knows maybe we are lucky and we roll well enough and so no one gets injured.

A risky idea comes across your mind, and after a brief internal debate with yourself, you decide to go ahead with it. There’s a loud yelling as he charges you, but you’re already building up energy. Just when he gets within clawing range, you let yourself shine- a brilliant sun briefly going off in the small building and causing those shouts of fear to become yelps of surprise and a bit of pain.

...Maybe more. They’ll recover, though. This idiot won’t; blinded like he was, he lunges for you in literal blind desperation, but it’s easy to sidestep, grab him by his tail, and take off like a shot out of the doors, dragging the would be assailant outside. He barely gets a yelp in before you swing him around, up, and with a vicious yank of your arms, sling him down to send him crashing into the ground, much to the shock of the bystanders and pedestrians nearby.

Although part of you wonders if that’d be it, your question is answered when you see him raise his head; you’re forced to let go as he lets loose a blast of heat that would’ve charred even you- as close as you were already, you’re immediately sweltering. He scrambles to his feet, and unfortunately the fact that you have an audience is very clear.

>Let him go; your client is out of harm’s way, it’s the guard’s job now. So long as Lyson's safe, you don't much care.
>You’re not giving him another chance to threaten anyone. You can try to finish this here and now, damn what people might think.

Hmm.... Either this or just let him go. While it shows off a bit of our skills, it's a non-lethal restraint one that wouldn't make people too worried, I think. After that Lysan can decide what he wants to do with the thing since it was the one responsible for hurting him.

Which is why we need to keep him down for the guards. He's clearly here on some shady business, and he's identified us as Lysan's summon. There's no way he won't tell his boss about this.

I'm pretty sure that his interest would be the same because we already have them at our mercy. The only difference right now is how fast that information reaches the boss and how many steps said boss has to do in order to free his crony(supposing he wants to).

Still we don't know how summons work as far as we know they could only be able to sustaing so much damage before getting send back to the summon world just to summoned again by his boss.

We have no way to ensure he can't escape or find a way to do it. Summoners also have a link to their summon and we don't know how deep this may go.
>>
>>2941132
eeeh....We don't know what would have happened if we didn't act. Chances are that he would have used Lysan as a bargain chip because he was the closest one and then we would have been forced to go with lethal force against them.

>>2941141
Thats why sending them into prison is for the best. At the very least in that way there is one of the two imprisoned and not bothering us.
>>
>>2941145
He could just impale himself and escape anyway that's my argument.
>>
>>2941153
And my counter argument is that you forced him into hanging himself instead of just running straight for his boss. We are forcing them to take a longer route so to speak in order to begin retaliating against us.
>>
>>2941160
No because the summoner and summon have a link remember? If Iris and other summons can know the summon ability by the link they could also figure out when a summon is killed.

And who ever summoned this guy must be strong so without knowing more reaveling our skill is more dangerous and also might make people thing/suspect that Lysan doesn't actually control us.

You’re not interested in getting on the front page today, and frankly you doubt Lysan is, either. You think you’ve done enough; as he backs up, he goes to hold his throat- that blast must’ve been superheated even for him. When a crowd starts murmuring and you can hear people call for the guard, that’s when he glances around, realizing his situation. Only staying long enough to give you a fierce growl and a muttered ‘next time…’, he takes off in a run, moving at a pretty good clip. By the time the armored guard approach several seconds later, they’re long behind him, and a couple stop nearby while two others continue the chase on summoned sabertooth tiger-like beasts.

The two that stop look you over, both of their spectral knight-ish summons standing behind them carefully as their masters draw spears. “Alright, then, careful now! State your summoner and reason for being, and-”

“Kyria!” Before you can answer, Lysan stumbles out, eyes still squinting, presumably from your brief light show. “Are you okay?”

“This summon’s yours, boy?” The knight doesn’t sound convinced. “We got word there was an altercation here…”

Suddenly a voice interrupts again. “No, wait, hey!” A young woman makes her way up to them, coming out of the store. “She’s innocent! She helped!”

The two knights look at the gathered group, yourself included, and you can hear one of them sigh. “Alright, alright...let’s go inside. We’re going to have to take statements.”

Ugh. This is going to be a waste of time…

It’s about a half hour or so later before the two of you walk out of the bookstore/cafe. You’d informed them about the attempt at robbery, as well as given them a description of the culprit that had been backed up by the other eyewitnesses. After that, Lance had decided to close up his half of the store for the day- but not before giving you the Grey Codex as well as the other two books you’d been interested in as a thanks (and maybe a bit of insurance), with a promise to ‘tell me what it says later, okay?’

The trip back is fairly uneventful, and it’s as he takes a shower that you decide to finally crack open the book…

The tome is...an accounting, it seems. A massive detailing of the inner workings of an old city, an old civilization, complete with historical accounts. Tales about how the world was in older times, as well as several ‘how-to’ sections on building certain technomagical structures. ‘Replenishment Towers’, ‘Fortification Pools’, ‘Rebinding Chairs’, and so on. To your surprise, it makes mention of feats of magic performed by humans, and what seems to be multiple other races. Nothing like what seems to be modern day.

“Hey, whatcha lookin’ at in there?” Lysan asks, toweling off his head. “So CAN you read it?”

You can. In particular, the part you just thumbed through. It seems like it’s an account. Some kind of massive war that scoured the world to such an extent that magic in and of itself became scarce, locked away. The codex explains how such power originally thrown around caused the plane of magic itself to shift, warp on itself. What ended up happening was that people could no longer tap into the natural magics of the plane, that they were trying to figure out methods around it. On a hunch, you flip to the last section...

‘So it has come to pass that we are attempting a rather radical idea, one that may not be our salvation entirely, but shall at least allow us some semblance of access to our old ways. We must call upon forbidden magics- ways to bind the spirits of the past to our will, for when they pass through the Field Arcanum, they will be endowed with but a portion of what powers we once brought to bear…’

Fascinating. “Well!?” Lysan asks. “So what does it say? Anything about legendary artifacts or treasures or anything?”

So summons are actually the spirit of the dead that get brougth up by forbidden magic. I guess it makes sense why people get worried about summon mayne Lysan has the gift to acess the magic the old way that's way the current way summoning works doesn't work for him.

“If you’re up for a bedtime story, I’ll tell you,” you offer. “But a fair warning- it’s not a happy story.”

“Yikes. Can’t say I’m much surprised, though,” he admits as he hops into bed. “Alright, let’s hear it.”

And so the rest of the night is spent telling him about what you’ve read- the history behind the old kingdoms, the multitude of races that apparently don’t exist anymore, the war in particular.

When you get to the summons and their history (after having skipped a few chapters), his eyes go wide for a moment- but only a moment. After the end of it...you can tell he’s got a great deal to think about. You can only imagine that it’s these thoughts that keep him up for some hours before he can finally fall asleep.

Even then, before you nod off, you can hear him mutter two words that make you wonder.

‘Old magic…’

Morning is a standard affair- you and he prepare, eat breakfast, and leave with little fanfare. The students seem to be starting to acclimate to your presence now, although the way some of them actually look at you and SMILE has you thinking that yesterday’s little escapade has made the rounds.

“Lysan!” Before you know it, Iris comes up behind him in a tackling hug. “Oh, GEEZ I can’t believe you were involved with that crazy mugger summon!” Spinning him around, she practically steers him as she frantically checks over any bit of exposed skin. “Are you okay?! Did it hurt you?”

“Wha-! Wait, whoa, hold on!” Lysan just manages to wriggle out of her grasp, much to Bellbelle’s amusement. “I’m fine, I swear! Kyria handled it, scared him off good. So now the city guard know about it and everything!”

“And you didn’t disperse it?!” She half-yells. “Why wouldn’t you!? It was attacking a civilian populace, you’d have been fine!”

You’re halfway taken aback, and you’re about to speak up to defend yourself, when Lysan does instead. “Hey, she didn’t know! You know most summons don’t, first time! And besides, even if it comes back, I’m pretty sure we...well, SHE could handle it!”

“There may also have been the possibility of further endangerment, miss,” Bellbelle helpfully points out.

Iris groans, but relents. “Fiiine...but I worry about you, Lysan. Anyway, let’s get ready for the next test.” And here she grins like the cat that’s about to eat the canary as she lowers her voice to a whisper. “I overheard a couple of the teachers talking earlier…”

“Er, that was me, miss.” Bellbelle interjects. “I simply informed you.”

Iris’s face falls flat for all of a second before she barrels on. “Anyway! I know what the next test iiiiis! I mean, I know EXACTLY- AND I know how to ace it!”

>>2941560
“Okay...cool?” Lysan shrugs.

Iris’s grin doesn’t leave, however. “Ahhh, but! I can tell you right now that there’s NO way you can beat this test on your own- because you’ve only had Kyria for a couple of days, get me? But maybe if you knew beforehand...”

Lysan’s eyes widen. “Oh...so it’s Sync?” he whispers back. Iris nods her head rapidly, and Lysan huffs. “Yeah, that’d be a tall order. So, what is it and how do we pass it?”

And then Iris’s crafty look deepens as she wags a impish finger. “Ah-ah-ah! You gotta agree do me a favor, first...ooor, should I say, you gotta make Little Miss Scary Heroine do me a favor, first!” She looks at you with something approaching envy, for once. “It’s nothing horrible, but Bellbelle’s not the type, and I don’t exactly want her to go just to bring someone else in, sooo…”

“Uhhh...what’s the favor?” Lysan asks.

But Iris shakes her head. “Nope! Not tellin’ until after I get a ‘yes’!”

Lysan purses his lips, then looks to you in a questioning expression. “What do you say?”

“Wait, you’re giving her the choice?” Iris says in surprise.

Lysan shrugs. “Yeah. I think it’s appropriate.”

Right? I know a lot of artists who use it for pose references and previsualizations. One of it's weaknesses is that it doesn't support basic model sculpting, so you're out of luck if you want to replicate costumes from other medias (unless said costumes are really simple, or the costumes are already ported to the game, using other sources, or you get REALLY creative with the game's + modding resources). But for original works, it's useful indeed, since you can do almost whatever you want .

Argh, it's probably the eyes that did it. When I look closer for details it looks much more normal, while overall it's eyes that makes it look like she is looking up with meekness for approval.

“Hmm...I suppose if you’re a friend, then there’s no reason to not trust you,” you decide. She seems a bit...excitable, but largely harmless, on the whole. Whatever it was she wanted you to do can’t be THAT bad...hopefully.

Iris claps her hands in excitement. “Great! Now, I’m holding you to that, okay? So...here’s the deal.” She waves you all to follow her around a corner, where there’s no other kids within hearing range. “Okay, so! The Test of Sync is supposed to be this tandem thing where you both basically have to solve a set of puzzles, right? You solve the puzzle, you get a picture card. Trick is, both the puzzles are different, but the SOLUTIONS need to match. That, AND you can’t see the puzzles your partner is solving- you’re gonna be across the room. So you can’t just solve them, they need to be the right pair. They’re using visuals for it, the example I heard was ‘night sky goes with star symbol’, so stuff like that. Some puzzles are a lot harder than others, though! No two are the same!”

Lysan nods, deep in thought. “Okay...makes sense so far. So we’re supposed to feel out what our summon is thinking and come to a mutual decision to match our answers?”

“Yup! Pretty simple, honestly- except you haven’t made much of a Bond with Kyria, right? So...you’re gonna have to make sure you know what you’re doing before you start- and that’s where the trick comes in!” She leans in close, and you have to admit you’re intrigued. “They have specific places where the solutions are supposed to be. Left, Middle, Right. And they’re inverse placements of each other, understand? Which means that if Kyria here goes for a solution that’s on her left, YOU need to go towards the solution on your right!”

“Wait, what?” Lysan blinks briefly. “Hold on, now that doesn’t quite make sense. Placements for the solutions? How?”

She shrugs. “Dunno, but that’s the setup that I overheard! Anyway, don’t tell anyone else or I’m in a bunch of trouble- heck, I’m only telling you because...well.” She pauses for all of a second as her eyes dart in a number of directions before refocusing on him. “Just because! Now go get ready or something, I gotta go!” Before she leaves, however, she turns towards you, grin on her face. “And I’ll see YOU at my dorm after class! Later!”

As she takes off, you notice Lysan has a dour expression on his face. “I dunno about this one…”

Neither do you, but… “Might as well try.”

“Then what do we do about matching up?” he asks. “Especially if the puzzle is super hard?”

Good question. If you can’t see anything, then you still can’t be positive you’ll both match until you set up a gameplan.

You both mull on it, and you eventually decide. “Well, I think we should just try an alternate pattern. Left, Right, Left. I have to imagine they’ll be suspicious if we just stay in one direction or just go in a row.”

He has to agree. Hopefully, the tests won’t be so ridiculous that he wouldn’t be able to figure it out. If they are...woof.
---------------------

“Alright, students.” The old lady is just as crisp as yesterday, but aside her is a new face- a long haired, pretty faced, brown-haired young man who looks at everyone with a simple smile on his face. Aside him is a purple colored amorphous being that seems to largely be content in the outlined form of a detail-less young woman. “Pay attention to Proctor Tullis, if you would!” She nods at him once the students quiet down, and he begins to speak.

“Okay! So your next trial will be here, in this auditorium. You will notice that there are two rows of seats at each end of the auditorium, each with a box on them. Summoners are to be on the end to my left, Summons to my right. You’ll both be given specific visual tests. These tests will be visible to ONLY the individual they are given to. You’re to complete the tests with the goals of arranging your answers so that both you and your summon create a coherent image- and I expect three of them. I also expect NO audible or visual contact with either other summoners OR summons. Understand?” He’s younger, but his voice carries no lack of authority in it, and everyone nods, as they head to their respective sides, yourself included.

“Make sure to not open the box until I say to begin. When you’re finished with one puzzle, raise your hand, and either I or Vivid will supply you with your next until you get three, or until 2 hours have passed. Oh, I should also note: there’s no rhyme or order to the solutions, okay?” He smiles a thin smile that you recognize as someone confident in out-thinking an opponent. “So don’t get too complacent!”

Hm. Well...things might’ve gotten a bit dicier. Alright, then…

As you sit down, you can see Lysan go white as a sheet. Not that you see it for long, as large privacy screens come up between your fellow summons, cutting you off from seeing anything but the test in front of you.

For a moment, dead silence. “Aaaand...begin!”

What lies before you is what can only be described as pieces of a ‘contraption’. There seems to be little reason to it, but it’s a mess of wires, tiny shutters, tubes, and a small ball that you can only guess needs to be directed somewhere. It’s all coming together into some kind of rube goldberg-esque machine. At the bottom of the base, closest to you, are three shallow divots, underneath which are different clear, square glass holders. These holders are protecting image cards, from the looks like. At the leftmost is a picture of a sun, the middle a pencil, and the last a strange fruit that looks like a lumpy banana.

A note inside says ‘Piece together the machine so that the ball rolls into the opening you want to obtain whichever card you like.’

Well, you know which one you want...now you just have to figure out how to put it all together.

Let’s see...if this piece goes here...that tube goes there...no, no, that’s going to be in the way of the lever…

Oddly enough, as low-stress as this is, it’s hard to really take too seriously. It’s kind of like a 3d jigsaw puzzle, or something. Doesn’t mean there aren’t frustrating moments, however…

Some time later, you at least slot in the final piece- you think. Now, all that’s left is to test it. You place the silver ball at the top of the contraption, and follow it as it makes its journey through shutters, loops, tubes, spinning pieces, and more, alllll the way down until it slips into the base, as designed, and goes out of your sight for a few moments…

...only for the lid on the leftmost glass barrier to lift as the ball is spat out. Success! At last you can raise your hand. For a few moments, nothing...and then a thin, transparent tentacle reaches up and over your privacy screen, waving back and forth- looking, you realize. A second one follows, and after a few moments, you hear a softly gurgling voice: “First test passed. You have one hour and twenty minutes left.” Carefully, she shlorps over the cover, scoops up the pieces in herself, save for the sun card, and quickly places down another box before she darts away.

Opening it, it’s ...some sort of triple layered puzzle. There’s a stick that goes through all three levels, but just looking at it, you can tell that not all three layers are the same. The note in THIS one reads: ‘Get the stick from one end of the three maze layers to the other.’

Well...here goes.

This one is only marginally easier, if only because there’s less moving parts. Having to determine the proper direction without slamming into dead ends is tougher than it looks. After some time and a lot of clacking, however, you do manage to make it to the rightmost end, where there is a picture of a picnic blanket, complete with basket. Your peg sinks a bit deeper in, there’s a *click*, and in front of you a card is ejected from a small slot in the base. Fantastic.

You raise your hand again, and quickly enough Vivid comes yet again to perform the same inspection. “Second test passed. You have fifty minutes left.”

Another takeaway and replacement, and this one is…huh. A board, lifted off the ground, with a number of panels, suspended by a pole, but you notice that, upon pressing them, you can flip them around- although every panel seems to be tied to another panel. Pressing one to flip it causes another to flip- sometimes one that you’ve already flipped. What’s more, there’s three colors.

‘Pick a color. Arrange the board so that all panels of that color are shown on the board. You will receive your card reward upon completion of the puzzle.’

Oh.

That’s not good. There’s no indication of a ‘leftmost’ picture. Just an trio of stacked image cards sitting on the top. The first and the one that’s showing has a tiny image of a bow and arrow, the second is a crown, and the third a river.

You’re actually going to have to choose…

Hm. Well...thinking about it, you flip to the river, which has a green background, interestingly enough. Considering green is one of the colors…

Fortunately, this one is altogether too easy once you figure out which panels affects the panels you’ve already pressed, and in practically moments you’re raising your hand yet again.

This time, Vivid peaks over your wall, and this time she’s clearly squinting at you, rich blue eyes becoming more noticeable as she takes in your handiwork. “Already finished? Truly? Hmmm…”

Although clearly suspicious, she can’t seem to find anything wrong with your work, and nods, expelling a full sized card from her gelatinous body. “Pass. I do wonder about the success of your summoner...although with such speed, assisting him should be easy, hm?” There’s something else in that sentence that she meant, but you’re honestly not sure what.

Regardless, it’s no longer up to you- it’s just a matter of waiting until Lysan is finished with his own tests…

Twenty dull minutes later, your divider is taken from you- and you see that Lysan’s is as well. There’s a couple others that got out ahead of you, Iris most notably, but by and large the majority seem to be stuck behind dividers still. “Alright, both partners are done- so now comes the moment of truth.” You walk with Vivid up to the center, meeting up with Lysan who’s clearly nervous. “Now, let’s see… your first choice?”

You hold out the sun. Lysan holds out a card of clouds. “That’s one match!” Tullis says. “Now, the next?”

The picnic scene for you. For him, ants on the march. “That would be the second,” Vivid says easily. “And now the last…”

You have the river. For him?

It’s a sword. You’re...pretty sure that’s not a- “Ah, not a match, I’m afraid. Two of three, it seems.” Yeah. That. Lysan groans in misery, only to get a pat on the back. “Hey, kid, don’t get too down. Nearly got this, and from what I’m told, your, uh, friend there is pretty new to you.” He flickers his gaze between both you and him, notably staying a bit longer on you. “To get two for three on a new summon is honestly impressive when it comes to figuring out these kinds of complicated Bond tricks. All this means is that you just gotta push yourself to pass the last two, y’know?”

“Y-yeah, I guess…” He sighs in defeat, arms limp. “I kinda wanted to not worry about the last test, but…”

Tullis just shakes his head, a wry smile on his face. “Nothing for it now, kid. Gotta go for it. At any rate, you didn’t pass, so we gotta keep you on campus for today. Your summon...well, you know the rules.”

“Right, right, no, I’ll just...uh, Kyria?” He turns to you, shrugging. “I guess you can...y’know, do whatever until I get out of class this evening.” He seems annoyed, but at least he’s trying to bounce back. “Just don’t hurt anyone, okay? I know you probably won’t, but, uh...just in case. That’s an order and all.”

You tilt your head in acquiescence. “As you say, then.” Of course, if he got in trouble, all bets were off.

“Come now, I believe it was...history for you, about now?” Vivid asks as she begins shooing him out.

"Okay, okay, I'm going..." although his trudging makes it clear his thoughts on the matter.

Tullis just sighs. He glances at you again, and you can see him swallow nothing but air as he tries to put on a brittle smile. “Yyyeaaaah...soooo...are you just kinda gonna...stand here or what?”

To answer him, you just walk a few steps away, put your hands behind you back in parade rest, and stare. Directly at him.

He blinks once, twice, then sloooowly turns away. “Oooookay then…right.”

A couple of minutes pass, and he’s starting to look back more often- although he quickly tries to refocus his attention elsewhere, scooting step by step away.

After another few minutes, Vivid comes back, and seeing you standing there, she moves to approach you. You immediately whip your head around to fix her with a stare and she- her head stops, but the rest of her body is on a bit of a time lag, and she practically *whips* herself to a halt, bits of gelatinous ooze flying a foot or two.

She manages to meet your stare only briefly, but when you turn back to your prior ‘subject’, she simply slithers off in a more snake-like form to get closer to Tullis.

10 minutes, and he’s taken to actively walking where before he was just waiting on students to call on him, wiping sweat from his face. Vivid’s taken to largely staying in the back, slithering either protectively around Tullis or otherwise staying either VERY close to him or far away from you. Every time they turn to you, you’re there to meet their eyes with all three of your own. You don’t blink. You don’t move. Just...staring.

Stare.

Stare.

Staaaaaa- “Okay, enough, please!”

That one is loud enough to get the attention of the few students still left as Tullis rounds on you, face sweating bucks and voice a bit cracked. “Please, I-I don’t know what you’re doing or-or what you’re up to, but I’m BEGGING you, please, just, I dunno, just stop it! What do you want from us?!”

>>2943643

Maybe, but so far there is no indication that can be done, and there are enough reasons to assume that we won't be able to do it.

I would consider that it wouldn't work since summoning here is using the spirits of the dead and have then pass through the arcane whatever of this world to become basically slave spirits.

>>
>>2943659
So what i'm saying is thay summon wouldn't work in the intersection or would be very limited lile the sigils we got from the mafia world.
>>

Okay, maybe it might be more difficult to do based on how the Intersection generally makes magic harder to do. That’s fine, but that shouldn’t discount summoning something with a simple mind or limited sentience. Maybe little elementals or mindless aberrations, things like that.

“13 minutes? What about 13 minute- hey!” Welp, might as well see what Iris wants from you. Now, just where is her dorm- ugh.

She never told you. A bit scatterbrained, maybe? Ah well. Just means you’ll find it the old fashioned way…

...and so it is, about a half hour later, you find yourself in front of Iris’ dorm. Hers at least has a nice little drawing on the front for her nameplate- ‘Iris’s Place (and Bellbelle’s, too!)’ sketched out with fluffy pink clouds.

‘Well, here goes,’ you mutter to yourself, and you knock on the door. You barely have any time to step back before it’s thrown open, Iris just beyond and sporting a ridiculous smile.

Of course, when you take in her attire, you realize that that’s not the only thing she’s sporting at the moment- she looks more decked out to go to a ball or something than anything else. She’s dressed in a rather fancy one piece dress, sparkling purple with gold trim, and even has a fancy, wide-brimmed hat to complete the ensemble.

You wonder if she realizes that it’s barely even noon. “Hey! You made it!” And before you can ask her about the wardrobe, she’s already walking clear across the campus, Bellbelle nowhere to be found. “Okay, follow me! We need to get there before registration closes! We’re gonna be cutting it close!”

“Pardon?” You raise an eyebrow she doesn’t see, too focused on powerwalking. “Registration for what?”

“The club, duh!” The CLUB? What, she wants to go dancing? “The Young Maestros Summoners Club? They’re kinda persnickety about who to give a shot, but I’m betting all you gotta do is let ‘em get an eyeful of you and they’ll beg to have us in!” She snickers. “And if not that, that’s what this little open house is for! ALSO why you’re here, just so ya know. They know your name, cause they heard the news. The fact that I've got your ear? They'll be tripping over themselves for me!”

Cheers boss, good fun on this job so far.
>>2943736
Not our client, not really our responsibility either
>>
>>2943774
>not really our responsibility either
But if she dies or gets hurt under our watch, it might sour things to the point that we either don't get paid, or get a diminished cut.
>>
>>2943774
Pretty sure something bad happening to her counts as it being our fault, and thus privy to a penalty if we fail.
>>
>>2943810
No it doesn't, she isn't under our contract.
>>
>>2943810
She isn't the client or falls under any part of the contract, so why would it affect Miranda regardless of what happens to her?
>>
>>2943813
Sorry, thought Lichen told us to make sure we keep an eye on her. Still, I’d assume keeping her safe is one of those things that would generally be expected of us, if only to have it count as the favor we owe her.
>>
>>2943813
>>2943818
But she falls under the contract we did in order to pass most of the last test. Regardless that we didn't pass, her information was true and we have to help her with whatever she wants to do. This logically involves not letting her get hurt and all of that. We are mercenaries, not obtuse, autist bastards.
>>
>>2943826
No it doesn't, she's just a source of help for completing the mission. Now that her assistance has already been obtained, she's no longer needed for anything else. We are NOT contract bound to hold up promises or even repay favors in order to complete the contract. The only limits are the Riders for the contract, and nothing else.

Don't confuse us for Izumi. While Miranda isn't evil, she's neutral enough that we don't need to care that much for anything but the completion
of the contract itself.
>>
>>2943841
She’s also smart enough to realize that NOT keeping an eye on a client’s friend might lead said friend to complain about it to them, thus causing a headache and giving the client the excuse to dock pay.
>>
>>2943687
>Say nothing. If she thinks it’ll work…
Stand there and look intimidating, got it.
>>
>>2943826
>>2943824
What this anon said:>>2943841

Now having said that. Maybe she is our side quest, besides the main contract i mean there is always these situations were we always get secondary and third objectives to complets and we get those as we are on mission.

So maybe keeping Iris safe and completling this Maestro club with her will be a side quest we can get more profit if we complete it.
>>
>>2943852
If the client dock pay then the contrac is over. If Lysan wants to run a new one to include hos harem on our protection he will need to do it. Also i'm pretty sure thay revealing the stones will break our desquise as a summon even if Iris knows that Lysan didn't invoked us by a traditional mean.
>>
>>2943852
Clients are not free to dock pay simply because they're upset with the Agent unless we did not fulfill parts of the contract. Obviously there's little reason to purposely upset a client, but that's in the end just an optional thing to keep the mission flowing smoothly for the sake of cooperation and completion of objectives for both parties. Basically, he can't afford to dock pay just whenever he feels like it, or he can take it up with Sal.
>>
Honestly i'm just following with Iris plan because this Maestro guys might have something valuable we can snatch and apparently they seem to be some kind of elite group.
>>
>>2943841
I know that we are neutral enough to decide to not do shit, but lets not be stupid here. Not keeping her safe its going to be counterproductive to us in short and long term.
>No it doesn't, she's just a source of help for completing the mission.
Not true. >>2942968
>Iris claps her hands in excitement. “Great! Now, I’m holding you to that, okay? So...here’s the deal.”...
If something happens to Iris, Lichen could use this as a proof that we didn't comply with the narrative rider, because we are summons. Lysan agreed to lend us to iris and help her in exchange for the information on the sync test. Since her information was true, we are supposed to treat her as the summoner for the given time Not really worth it to send all our work to the gutter because we decided to be an asshat for no real reason.
>>
>>2943877
Still we don't need to give her a murmur stone. Because that fucks up our disguise as a summon. So instead of doing that just keep close to her during the entire event.
>>
>>2943884
Oh, that. I completely agree with you on that matter. I was just against the idea of being antagonistic to whatever Iris wants to do.
>>
>>2943877
Her holding anything on us is completely from her perspective, and we're not contract bound to uphold it. This is because for the case of the narrative Rider, a summon obeys their summoner, but nothing says we have to obey other summoners. In the end pretending to be her summon is optional, not mandatory.

Of course we don't need to go out of our way to be an asshat, but nothing says we're doing that just by NOT caring about her. Seriously, the original argument spawned from simply not doing more than the given options, which are fine already. The point is that we don't need to vote for write-ins to do more for this person than the default votes.
>>
>>2943884
I can go with that, it’s the whole “Well, she’s not the summoner, so it’s not my responsibility if she’s kidnapped” attitude that I’m having a problem with.
>>
>>2943889
>>2943886
My only problem was in giving her a murmur stone and fuck up our disguise as a rare/unique summon that Lysan stumbled upon while using a dangerous ritual.

Hm, I've just realized: Summons are usually around for a long time after the initial summoning, right? I'm getting the impression most everyone we're interacting with is assuming we won't be any different. I know it won't matter to us, but I wonder how that'll affect things after we leave?
>>
>>2944234
Summoners can have more then one summon the test are manly used to see the summoner with his favorite linked summon

We are a exceptiin because Lysan just recently summoned us. Maybe he can just say he dispelled us and still has us but we are to powerfull and so consume to much of his energy to keep in control.

Of course if he does that he will require to learn how to actually invoke another summon and actually work for a link with it.
>>
>>2944257
There’s devices in the Intersection that can help people channel mana if they normally can’t, right? Do you think we can get some more money out of him if we get either Izumi or Lorelei to purchase and send one back?
>>
Maybe if Lysan or his parents are super rich we could arrange a long-term contract where he gets to summon somebody from Silvereye Solutions in exchange for a fair payment whenever he needs a summon.
>>
>>2944294
While not a bad idea on it's own, I seriously doubt he could pay for any Outgoer repeatedly. No matter how much currency you have, it will always at least sting to hire one.

Also, SES isn't big enough for on-call work; not enough outgoers guaranteed available at any one time.

“Why do you even want to be a member?” you find yourself asking. She doesn’t seem like she’d fit in with a bunch of stuffed shirts, if this club is what you think it is.

“Even aside from the bunch of connections they have for really good jobs and all that? Honestly, it’s kinda about status as much as anything. Being part of that group gets you respect. Power. You’re someone to know, and I’ve got like, a hundred ways I could use that.” Hm. Power, huh? Wonder what for. She’s still not quit the type, to you. But who knows. Maybe she’s just got hidden facets.

You both walk a ways, moving off-campus and into a lesser-populated area. There’s more trees here than anything else, as well as well-cut grass, but the road continues. Eventually, however, you notice a break in the trees, and just beyond that?

A rather big house, classic, with marble pillars around the front, and a double sized fountain. It has to be at least 3 floors, and has a Victorian look to it. You can see that there’s a number of hopefuls already outside, most of them in finery much like Iris. Their summons are also, from what you can tell, affecting an air of formality, but wow, does it seem fake. There’s even some solo summons that seem to be working as servers, carrying around small finger foods and whatnot for the patrons to eat. “They recruit from whoever. Doesn’t have to just be seniors or graduates,” Iris notes. “So anyway, just stick around and...I dunno, just don’t cause a scene. You don’t haveta stay near me, but I’m gonna go register and then schmooze a bit.”

The two of you walk forth, and for a moment, all eyes are on you. You can’t help but notice that several step back in alarm, while others inch closer, out of curiosity. One of them- a sharp nosed boy with a monocle, looks at you with something close to disdain, even. Blah.

“I think I’ll be better off remaining near you,” you decide. She just nods and continues forth. You can see the goal- there’s a porch area with a lectern, and on it is a large book. As you get closer, you can see that it’s filled with a list of individuals. No list of summons, so you suppose that’ll help for her later.

There’s a low din as a number of people watch you follow, and watch her sign her name in. The first to speak up, however, is a young, well coiffed lad in a sharp green blazer. “My word... Just who might this be?” A bit slow on the reaction, huh? “Not the hero fairy from the news the other day, is it?”

“Not quite the picture the press painted, is it?” The beak-nosed boy notes. “But I was under the impression there was a lad what was her summoner. Who’re you, miss?”

“My name’s Iris, and I’m here for tryouts, of course.” She speaks demurely, and with the most inoffensive tone she can muster. “I’m strongly affiliated with Kyria here, and once I informed her of my intentions, she requested her summoner allow her to accompany me.”

Beaky scoffs. “That so? Seems a bit presumptuous, eh?” He looks you up and down. “She looks a specimen, of course, but that won’t get you in by itself. There’s a certain something they’ll be looking for, after all.”

“True,” Iris notes, “and I think I have it.”

He opens his mouth to respond, but before he can, a sound of disgust comes from behind him, and he smirks. Soon enough, something makes its way over- a large, red gorilla-like summon, hair in a massive mohawk and horns erupting out of his head, forming a nearly-complete halo. His eyes are a light blue, but that doesn’t seem to affect the way he swaggers up to you, his bulk and height dwarfing the boy. “THIS is the fairy?” He snorts in a grumbling voice. “I thought she’d be taller.”

“Oh, you know how the media can be,” Beakboy titters. “Allow me to introduce my personal summon, Hagar. Big, bold, simply astounding. Capable of much more than his appearance suggests- and that’s quite a lot, if you ask me.”

“Heh. Boss, I been around this whole place and there’s no good food. Just these little crumbs! Bunch slackers,” he grumbles, holding what seems to be a pair of finger sandwiches in his massive mitts. “We get in here, first thing we need to bring up is getting better food!”

“Of course,” he says idly. “Although Ms. Iris and the little one here might have something to say about it.

“Ha! They look like they could use the food! In fact, here!” And with that, he flicks his arm- sending the foods stuffs right at you, and for a brief moment time slows in your perception- you can see Iris’s jaw taking a while to drop, as well as others looking on in astonishment.

Honestly, they’re actually in good condition. The sandwiches, you mean.

Like a flash, your hands snakes out and grabs the both of them. They’re simple ham and cheese, nothing major. And at the very least his fur doesn’t seem to be on either of them.

You casually hand one of them over to Iris, who takes one with a numb surprise as you fix him with a level stare. “Thank you very much. I was considering getting something to whet the palate. To bring us some refreshments in advance is most gracious of you.”

Dead silence. And then, a brief chuckle. And then another. And suddenly there’s an undercurrent of laughter and applause to the whole thing.

There’s a gaping of Hagar’s mouth, as he tries to process what just happened, and soon his mouth is opening and closing like a fish. “Wha...I...you...”

“Leave us.” You state simply, those words holding oh-so-much promise of pain if he didn’t.

He merely nods. “Yes’m.” And much to the gobsmacked expression of Mr. Beakly, he just sort of trundles away.

You calmly look back down his nose as he clearly seems uncertain where to look now. “You were saying, sir?”

“I...uh...er...good luck?” He lamely offers.

Clap, clap, clap. As one, you all turn towards the doorway. Just inside it is a group of five young men and women, all applauding- at you, you think. “Remarkably classy. Simply impeccable handling of the situation,” says the one in the lead- a shorter boy with hair slightly frizzy, but well-groomed, in a sized robe and gold tunic. A bit...ostentatious, but okay. “As expected of someone of higher standing.” And then he turns to Iris. “And you are...her summoner? I was informed otherwise…”

Iris glances towards you briefly, but steps up. “I’m a close friend of hers, you see…”

“Ah, I beg your pardon, then,” the boy speaks up. “But you intend for this summon to vouch for you?”

“Ah, yes?” Iris admits.

“Then if you would mind letting her speak?” And with that, the collective turns to you. “What would you say is this girl’s best quality? What makes her worthy of being in an elite group such as this?”

Good question. You hardly know her, but from the little you do…

Thinking about it for a moment, there is something that leaps out at you. “She’s very intelligent and understanding about many situations. She’s good at analyzing a situation, crafting a plan, and then following through.” Hopefully, that’d be at least a-

“Good start,” the boy finishes your thoughts. “But that alone wouldn’t be able to grant her access. That said, if you believe that’s one of her stronger points, then we’ll have to test her on that, hm? And of course we’ll still have to include the rest of these fine ladies and gentlemen. But, considering what you’ve said and shown...I think we’d like to talk with you later. If you’d both wait in the lobby, please? And by all means,” and here he grins. “Enjoy the rest of the refreshments. Now as for the rest of you!” And here he turns to them all. “I thank you all for showing interest in the Young Maestros Summoners Club. We look forward to seeing if you all have what it takes- and so we shall begin shortly. If you would all follow us to the library room?”

The handful of people, some looking at you and Iris with wonder and awe, some jealousy, and in one particular case, abject fear, all shuffle inside, with yourself and Iris last, who looks positvely giddy. “I can’t believe this!” she titters quietly. “Everything’s going better than expected! This is going to be a slam dunk!”

For once you feel like you’re going to agree- before you cross the threshold of the doorway, and -something- reverberates through your skull, through your whole body, in fact. It’s not a common feeling...but you know what it is regardless. You couldn’t NOT know.

Someone else is here. Another Outgoer. And a very strong one.

...Fuck.
>>
>>2945875
I was wondering when we bump into someone on a job again.
We're no slouch as an Outgoer, and we're pretty combat focused besides. Still though, here's hoping they're not hired in opposition to us.
>>
>>2945875
For future challenges we should just point out she managed to get our support. And if people feel that's not significant, they're welcome to test that out.

And if the other Outgoer causes shit, just tell the summoner you're happy to prove your point, but it might cost most of the continent in order to do so.

Their call. Not like WE live here.
>>
>>2945875
Right now is the time to call Sal and ask him what’s up. We need to know who the opposition is and their Dealmaker patron, and what they’re doing here.

We'll need to wait for line of sight on the Outgoer at least, first. If they aren't obviously hostile, we should talk to them. If we end up a loggerheads, we could both end up with botched contracts. Better for everyone if we work out our differences, or at least stay out of each other's way.
>>
>>2945910
>>2945896
We could just engage in glorious cooperation. I mean our main mission is to help Lysan not Iris.

Unless we will need to fight to be on the club. We are just doing this as a favor and she may be here just relaxing as we are.
>>
>>2945923
Looking like Sunday. Tomorrow is unlikely since I'll be busy all day.
>>
>>2945936
I might be misremembering (because this happened on our first official mission) but the outgoers don't tend to be hostile to each other unless they really need to. This applies even if they have conflicting interests. We should be fine unless we need to fight against them on the fight test, or we discover that the outgoer is going to kill Nisan or someone that might degrade the pay we get.
>>
>>2945936
I mean as far as we know we could just help this outgoer and Iris can get a friend. There is no saying about these guys accepting just one person into their mix and beside that, having 12 members sounds a lot more aesthetically pleasing then 11 members.
>>
>>2945956
Besides we are all working with the goal to better the intersection. We can always be civil about this whole thing.
>>
>>2945956

>>
>>2946241
*shrug* So we can give to her? I mean we already know what it says and we can scan it. We just wanted to protect our ward and take a look at the book. Heck she should thank us since that us getting it makes the job easy for her or most likely she got this job thanks to us fucking up the thef in first place.

But definetly call Sal and have him solve the problem with this outgoer boss.
>>
>>2946256
>>2946241
Nah. Lets wait and see how these things escalate. With any luck we might be able to redirect the outgoer's attention elsewhere or lie to them.
>>
>>2946261
I mean i don't mind? Not like having Iris faill in getting accepted breaks our contract with Lysan. That doesn't mean we won't keep vouching for her. Maybe the outgoer is a nice one and he/she is the summon of one of the 10 members of the club
>>
>>2946256
>So we can give to her?
I hope it's that simple and the other outgoer's contract doesn't involve killing our summoner because we got in the way during the first attempt at theft
>>
>>2946270
That's exactly my point. We don't really need to be hostile until we learn what the other outgoer is doing here.
>>
>>2946275
Eh i'm pretty sure If it co.es to that Sal and this outgoer boss can try and work things out. Besides the guy seemed more interested in getting the book then anything.

But, if it comes to that we just need to punch her until the summoner is forced to redoo the contract.
>>
Shadowrun!

We're here to pass a school test. That's it. Anything else is just gravy.

I sincerely doubt they're here to murder school kids you know? At worst they'll fight us for the book, and we can just give it to them.

Great. Meeting an Outgoer here is probably the worst thing that could happen. You could likely get out of it with a bit of negotiation, but the chances are pretty high that whomever this is is on their primary objective, as opposed to you mostly doing this to kill time and see what might be able to be done with influencing her towards you and helping take some heat off you.

Of course, Iris looks back, and while you’re pretty positive of your poker face, she nonetheless stops for a second. “Hey, you coming?” You just nod, and head on in.

“Right, now, we’ll be a few moments, so if you don’t mind waiting here?” The lead boy motions to what’s actually more of a sitting room than anything else as the other members continue on, leading the applicants up a set of stairs. “You’ll find we have an in-house butler who’ll be more than happy to accommodate you in whatever manner you might need. Cawlin!”

At that, a door opens on the other end of the room, and out comes a very regal-looking summon; a tall, feathered, black and gold humanoid who rests his wings folded across his torso. “You called for me, sir?” His voice is dusky and solid, and you can guess he’s been at this for a while.

“See that these two are kept well until the second round of the application tests, won’t you? I have to help my fellows see to the other applicants.” Cawlin bows deeply in affirmation, and with that the boy takes his leave.

Turning to you, you’re surprised in that he squints his eyes, but makes no move backwards, or even otherwise indicates any sense of fear of you- surprising, considering his eyes are virtually white. “Is there anything I might be able to help you two with, then?”

“Uh...can I get a drink? I dunno, juice is fine?” Iris shrugs. He looks to you, and you just nod. As he leaves, though...you should probably figure out what to do. You can feel this Outgoer is somewhere below the house- likely some kind of basement...but the question is what to do about it. You know full well that they likely sensed YOU as soon as you got in range, too. You just need to hope they don’t decide to try and be too proactive...

>Tell Iris that you feel like something is amiss and want to check it out.

Thinking about it, you probably don’t need to worry Iris- at least, not just yet. You need a bit better stock of the situation before you go throwing out alarms. Fortunately, you’re pretty sure you’ve got a good source of information right here with you- well, as soon as he comes back.

In the meantime, though… “Sal? We might have a problem. We’ve got another worker in the area.”

“Thaaaat so?” Comes the response. “Leeeeet me ask around. Shouldn’t take toooooo long.” As he says that, the bird comes back, with two glasses. That was rather speedy, really.

As you both accept the drinks, you decide it might be worth investigating yourself. “Do you think we might be able to take a look around the house? It seems...intriguing.” Iris looks at you curiously, but says nothing.

Cawlin looks at you, raising an eyebrow. There’s a few moments where you lock eyes with him, but astonishingly, he doesn’t react beyond a simple ‘hmm’. “Why would you want to, if you don’t mind my asking?”

>(Intimidation) “Because I want to, and they said you’d keep me well. Is that not good enough?”

Man of culture

Aldo, iirc, general guidelines dictate that if two outgoers have opposing goals on a job, mostly anything goes, as there's virtually no chance for anyone actually dying.
But since this is just a favor, if there is a clash, we could let the other outgoer have their way as a favor. It's a long term investment to have outgoer friends, even if they turn out to be small fry
>>
>>2952009
I mean since the outgoer is inside the house maybe she was summoned to avaliate/test the people trying to join the club.
>>
>>2952016
Huh, didnt even consider that possibility, good catch
>>
>>2952016
Or they might have been here on a previous job, and Cawlin and his bros might have found a way to prevent an Outgoer from leaving their service. This is the type of world where summons are meant to stick around indefinitely, rather than do the task they were summoned for and disappear back to their home plane.
>>
>>2952051
Or that too. We saw a world with much less magical power (the cowboy world) were they managed to keep a outgoer in magical chains and prevent it to be rescued.

>>
>>2952774
It was a little more complicated than that, but yes, an Outgoer did manage to get herself captured on that mission. Don't remember why she didn't pop her emergency teleport though.
>>
>>2952824
I think because she was worried about getting a reprimand from her boss, or possibly being fired for her mistake. Plus there were dudes working her over at some point, so she might not have wanted to bring them back with her while they were torturing her, and she definitely wasn’t anywhere near coherent enough to contact her HQ when they got interrupted by us.
>>
>>2952755
>Eventually their equivalent to sal would figure out something was amiss

Bigger companies have more personnel and missions to worry about. Cowgirl was from Direct Action, which is a rather large company, certainly larger then SES. I wouldn’t be surprised if she got lost in the shuffle of other missions.

Easy enough to answer. “Considering the grandeur, I’m sure there’s a lot of history here, no? It wouldn’t be so bad to indulge my curiosity, would it?”

The way he looks at you is clearly suspect, and even Iris seems confused by your insistence. After a few moments, however, he nods, if slowly. “Very well. I suppose I can grant you a brief tour. However, you will have to stay with me at all times- I’m sure you understand the need for security. I am uncertain how long the trial shall take, but ideally we shall be back before long. If you would follow me, then, we shall start off on the first floor, where I can detail to you the history of these hallowed halls, and of the club itself…”

As the tour starts, he starts talking about the various rooms and the history behind each of them, with occasional reference to a summon or two that helped out. However...you find yourself noticing that even those oblique mentions peter out before very long, and he’s sticking to the construction history and the tales of the overall club. Hardly anything about the people or summons inside it.

“Hey, so what about you?” Iris asks out of the blue. “How long have you been here?”

“Ah, me?” He actually seems a bit surprised. “I have been here for quite some time. The young master Elias is the several times great grandson of the club’s founder. I have been passed down through his lineage, and thus have served and guided his house and this house, if you’ll excuse my attempt at humor- for generations. He is willing to confide in me a great many things, and in turn I provide my counsel to him whensoever he asks.”

Hmmm…

Sal's whole thing is that he's a nebulous, mercury-goop looking thing that happens to take the form of a dripping/wax goo lizard with sunglasses on because he thinks they look cool. Hm. That might be an avenue to work from. “Are you the only summon he uses, then? No others?”

He opens his mouth just slightly- enough for you to notice before he shuts it again, whatever he was going to say dying on his lips quickly before he responds properly. “I take care of him sufficiently that he needs no other summons for very long. Perhaps the occasional unique task, but no more than that.” His voice is steady, but you swear it’d hardened just a bit.

Iris doesn’t seem to notice, however, and she nods. “I kinda get that. I know some people use multiple, but frankly I’ve found it’s usually good to just have one and stick with it. Helps with your bond and all.”

“Our bond is assured by blood,” Cawlin stats imperiously, “and forged by trials aplenty. I doubt any force on this planet could break it, no matter the cause.” At least he sounds quite dedicated to his summoner…

You hear a cheer go up as you enter a very nice little sitting room, red carpet, plush seats and everything. “Whoa...why couldn’t we wait in HERE?”

“This is the Master’s personal sitting room,” Cawlin says in answer. “Only when he is present may guests rest here- although I know for certain he has no qualms in showcasing it to an audience.” There’s a brief moment of wry amusement as he finishes that sentence. “However, beyond that, there’s little of note aside from its numerous high-quality portraits of our lineage. And that is the entirety of the main floor,” he finishes. Indeed, a number of well-made pictures of various men and women adorn the wall. But you’re not concerned about that.

You’re concerned about the thumping, yet painless bass through your body.

It’s louder now, and you can vaguely feel it walking back and forth, like it’s pacing. At times it’s right under you- others it’s slightly further away, probably around where the kitchen is. Whatever’s underneath, it’s a big room at least. But that’s all you can tell. Before you can say anything else, however, there’s a cheer that comes from above you and aways a bit.

“Seems like something has been accomplished,” Cawlin notes idly. “It may be best to bring you back now. Follow me,” he states, apparently not taking no for an answer. Iris just shrugs and follows. You…

You want to know who’s down there. Whatever they’re doing, they’re content to stay that way for now, but you’re going to need to-

”Aaaaaaaand back!” oh, right! “Got a bit of informaaaaaation on your potential interference. Goes by Amanda Kaaaane, and she’s with Flashpoint! Wouldn’t tell me the jooooob, though. Hooopefully she’s just there to get something and be on her way.”

Hm. Flashpoint? They’re usually go-getters, but one being down there? Wonder if they got stuck or something. “Thanks, Sal. Ideally we can just ignore each other.”

“Best of luuuck!” Alright, so you have a name and a group, at least. After the most recent incident between you guys and Flashpoint, you can’t help but wonder how this’ll play out, but hopefully there’s no hard feelings…

You’re back in the public sitting room before very long, and none too soon as you can hear the group walking back down the stairwell. “And here is where I have to say ‘congratulations!’ to the other two to pass the first round of tryouts!” He motions to the sharp kid in the green blazer, and an older, blonde haired girl in a large, silver, frilly dress. “Mister Baxter, Miss Abernathy, I must say you both accomplished the task with aplomb. Tomorrow will be the second and final test, and I look forward to you as well as the lovely young lady here, Miss…”

“Iris Vaughn,” Iris finishes.

“Miss Vaughn, thank you. Mind, I would ask that your proper summon be with you tomorrow? After all, if this one isn’t yours, we can’t expect them to be with you at all times, can we?” Well, at least the kid’s sensible.

And Iris seems to understand that, nodding. “Alright. I’ll bring Bellbelle tomorrow.” ‘Like it or not,’ you can hear her mutter under her breath.

And that’s when he fixes you with a strange look- as does the rest of the quintet. “Although...if you don’t mind, we’d like to speak to Kyria alone for a while. Purely if you have the time, of course.”

Iris, actually, looks a bit put out at that. “Uh...it’s close to the afternoon, isn’t it? Because I’ll be honest, I kinda gotta meet my parents before long, and it’s a bit of a walk...”

Gah. This COULD be your chance to get some more information about the situation. Then again, you could just take what you’ve gotten and hope that they’ve got nothing to do with you...

You shake your head. Information was important, but you didn’t want to get caught out by either them or your summoner. Maybe a middle ground… “Then perhaps you could make it quick?” you ask. “If only so that I may assist her in arriving quicker.”

He sighs lightly, but shrugs. “Very well, I suppose I can keep it to the pertinent parts. Come with me, please.” He and the other four then lead you off- to his private sitting room, you realize.

As they sit in the numerous chairs nearby, you realize that they’ve essentially formed a half-circle around you- not quite boxing you in, but making it clear there’s them, and then there’s you. “Beg our pardon, but I’m certain you realize your...countenance is a bit concerning.”

“So I’ve been informed,” you note dryly.

The boy blanches only slightly. “Yeess...well, I’ve no doubt you’ve been told to be careful, so I’ll spare you the repetition. Simply put, however...you’re the summon of that boy, correct? Blast it, I forget the name…”

“Lysan,” the girl offers.

“Yes, Lysan, thank you. Him...as you said to make this quick, I must ask you- if I’m recalling correctly, he is currently taking the final Summoner’s Exams, correct?” And he leans forward, as do the other four. “You’re a very powerful summon, no doubt. And I...find it difficult to believe he can restrain your power wholly with his own. I think it’s rather obvious to most who see you that you obey him out of curiosity and whim more than anything else.”

Not entirely accurate.

“And it is because of that I feel I can request of you…” a deep breath. “To have you NOT allow Mister Lysan to succeed in the Test of Might.”

THAT catches your attention. “Beg pardon?”

He nods. “You DID ask to keep it brief, so I can only say that it is a matter of both financial AND physical security- to both of us, in a way. Him winning puts him in jeopardy.”

A knock on the door, and Cawlin steps in. “Miss Iris would-”

“Hey, yeah, is this going to take long after all?” Man, she’s impatient. “Seriously, I’m sorry, but I need to get going.”

“No, it’s fine.” The five stand up. “The message has been delivered, and we have some important business to deal with ourselves. Miss Iris, Miss Kyria, I hope you both have a pleasant day.”

And you’re shuffled off, as they rather quickly leave. You barely got a word in edgewise…!

But...physical danger? Why? And from who?

Frankly, you find yourself more than a bit miffed that you got cut off so suddenly...but it’s not like you could yell about it without causing some undue attention. Although at this rate, it might be worth it to figure out what’s going on here…

Not that it REALLY should matter, but if this has anything to do with the other Outgoer, it could be...annoying.

Iris looks at you curiously as you both walk away from the house, finally speaking when you’re a ways down the road. “Soooo...what did they talk to you about? Anything you can tell me?”

Hm. Good question. You’ve no doubt that if Iris knew about the ‘situation’, then she’d try to figure something out, but that might make things worse if whatever’s targeting him targets her to keep their plan in motion. Then again, it might be worth it to have the opposing force theoretically distracted, or you could use her as bait of a sort…

Should we tell Bellbelle, though? She could keep an open eye out for any shenanigans the Maestros Club pulls.
>>
>>2962435
She wouldn't be any more help than Iris would be, and is likely to just tell her anyways.

Iris will still be trying to join this club. I doubt it would be a good idea to leave her in the dark.

Shaking your head, you decide. “Nothing major; don’t worry about it.” She’d be as much a potential liability as an asset, and the last thing you need right now is more complications.

She looks at you oddly, frowning, but doesn’t say anything, instead just shrugging. The walk back is in relative quiet, save for when you stop at the gate. “Thanks a ton for speaking up for me back there. It’s gonna go far for tomorrow. I just hope Bellbelle is willing to do me a solid…” she grumbles.

“Hope the rest of your day is good,” you offer, and giving you a quick wave, she heads off away from campus. As for you, there’s still daylight, and you’re pretty sure that Lysan should be out of class by now, judging by the number of students out and about. But where would he be…?

Huh. You hope he hasn’t gotten into anything bad-

“Psssst!” Hm? “Kyria! Over here!” Well, that sounds like him. Turning, you soon spot him behind a tree nearby, next to one of the main buildings. Wonder what he’s hiding from?

“Is something wrong?” As you approach, you notice that his face is red, and he’s sweaty and panting. Been running?

“Keep it down! Nerisa’s looking for me!” His head swivels as though she might be stalking him right this second. “She heard I didn’t pass the test and so she’s making me do a ton of exercises to prepare for the Test of Might! Even though I wouldn’t actually be fighting!” Ah. “I only managed to sneak away once she had to use the bathroom! She’s gonna kill me if she keeps this up!”

“I see.” Of course, the question here is what does that have to do with you?

“Look, can you keep her distracted?" he asks, near pleading. "There’s no WAY I can outrun her if she spots me!”

>Alright. This, I can do. Where was she last?

“You might just have to deal with it,” you say seriously.

This is enough to get him to poke his head out. “Whaa…?”

You huff. “There’s far worse in your future than some squats if you want to pass the Exam, now that you’ve got someone targeting you.”

“WHAT?!” That shout causes a bunch of heads to turn, and you hear a small ‘aha!’ from around the corner. “Why would...what’s-”

“That’s why I’ll be contributing to your training as well,” you decide. “You only have a few days left with me, so I can’t expect you to get much stronger physically, but I can at least start you on theory and tactics along with basic calisthenics with Nerisa. And I mean start NOW.”

“THERE you are!” a familiar rough voice yells as Nerisa approaches. Lysan looks as though he wants to bolt, but you snag his collar as he starts to edge away. “Thanks for holdin’ him in place. Told this slack that if he wanted to make up for botching one test, he’s gonna have to work hard to beat the Test of Might!”

You couldn’t agree more.
