The deafening crack of gunfire filled the air as the Votish soldiers in their red tunics and colorful skirts returned fire against their attackers, the smoke from the guns was thick enough that aiming was guesswork at best, but hundreds of men firing off volleys of lead are bound to hit something. The acrid stench of black powder and the screams of the dead and dying filled the air as their attacker’s return fire ripped through those of the contingent not quick enough in getting to cover, bullets pinging off the embankment of stone Ardashir was sheltered behind. One of the men made the mistake of peeking over the rim and took a bullet through the eye for his trouble. He gargled wordlessly before collapsing dead, half his head blown off.

A clap of thunder echoed through the canyon as blinding light ripped through the men to Ardashir’s left, his eyes shutting tight as dirt and gore rained down on him from above. Deafened as he was he felt more than heard the roar of the cannons as they were deployed in defense of the regiment. Part of him was screaming to get up and run, run back to his mother’s carriage in the supply train. The other part screamed that to stand up was to invite death, and he found himself curling tighter into the fetal position as the battle raged around him.

A hand grabbed him firmly by the collar and dragged him bodily upright. Lieutenant Conall, a monster of a man with an impressive beard whom Arde’s mother was quite fond of, crouched next to him behind the rock wall. He jerked a pistol from its holster on his harness and shoved it into Ardashir’s hands, shouting something which was lost to the ringing in the boy’s ears. A sharp slap drew Arde from the daze he found himself in, and the sounds of battle rushed to greet him. “-iot, I said get to the front and tell the general they’re on the ridge to the north, and they’ve got one of those fucking sorcerers with them!”

I think we all need to have a serious discussion pertaining to the fact that our gracious quest master known as Soma. He is not the proficient writer we once thought him to be, in all actuality he is a hack and a fraud peddling low quality goods, he is equatable to the snake oil salesmen of yore. We have seen him throw out worthless and petty drama time and time again yet accepted his skill as a writer nonetheless, we suck in his scenes of mindless violence like a starving calf does his mothers teat, we do this even though it is obscenely obvious to even the lowest of the common plebes that violence could be written by a third grader. For far too long have we debased ourselves reveling in simple adrenaline evoking scenes and suffering through mindless drivel between. I say it is high time that we demand of Soma a higher quality quest and that he should be held accountable for his poorly thought out setting and plot lines that are so blatantly come up with on the spot. I personally have spent several weeks deep within the bowels of the beast known as the ircabal and in my times there I have gathered evidence which leads me to believe there is a origin point for all the flaws which our quest master has. I propose that soma is a autisitc pedophile lacking in the common moral fiber that binds upstanding society, I assert this to have been the driving factor in his early leave from home as he had made unwelcome sexual advances upon his underage sister possibly even raping her. The resulting social backlash and banishment from his normal everyday life would be an extreme stress factor to someone with autism, leading to him seeking a way to vent his frustrations in some way. That way is Banished Quest; Banished Quest is an autisitc pedophiles emotional vent enabled and allowed to continue for far too long. I thank you for your time reading all of this my fellow questing individuals and I welcome all constructive criticism.

Ardeshir’s grip tightened around the handle of the pistol, and without thinking he leapt to his feet. The battle raged all around him as his feet pounded against the dirt road, carrying him as quickly as they could through the crowds of soldiers. He couldn’t see the enemy, not through the choking haze of smoke. Bullets seemed to come from nowhere, pinging off the dirt and rocks or burying themselves at random into the flesh of men. Arde kept himself low to the ground and hugged the embankment of stone as long as he could, to avoid sharing the fate of the broken men who littered the battlefield.

Eventually the wall ended, and Arde was forced to make a break across open ground for a grouping of wagons which might offer some protection. The battle which raged in the center of the column seemed absent here, the clouds of smoke not nearly as thick and the gunshots more distant. As Ardeshir crouched to shelter behind a cart full of supplies he found himself face to face with a Votish soldier, a boy probably about his own age, his face gaunt and skin pale.

The foreigner dropped his rifle and reached for his knife, but before he could prise the blade from its sheath Ardeshir had shoved the barrel of his pistol into the boy’s chest. There weren’t any other soldiers in sight, most having rushed off to defend their fellows against the ambush from the north. Before either of the youths could say anything to deescalate the situation, the sound of hooves pounding against dirt cut through the din of battle. Someone was coming.

>Abandon the soldier to the deprivations of whoever the horsemen were, you had a mission to carry out.
>Gesture for the boy to stay silent, and wait for the horsemen to reveal themselves. Maybe they’re reinforcements from the Votish cavalry?

Keeping his pistol trained on the boy, Arde picked up the discarded rifle and retreated towards a ditch which ran along the south side of the road. Once he had put some distance between himself and the Votish soldier he shoved the pistol into the black sash wrapped about his waist and set off at a sprint further down the road, the boy’s rifle clutched against his chest. It was an heavy thing, practical as a club if nothing else, and for ammunition Ardeshir had only the single shot loaded in the barrel. Despite these admitted disadvantages, the rifle was bound to punch a hole in just about anything he pointed it at, and if nothing else it was certainly intimidating.

From behind him, a series of gunshots cut through the roar of cannon fire and the crack of thunder. Fear twisted Ardeshir’s gut as he retreated towards the vanguard. He could hear more hooves pounding against the dirt road and the whoops and ululations of his countrymen as they fell upon the regiment’s supplies, already setting their minds to plunder. If the enemy cavalry had already divided the column in two, what hope did the Votish have of pulling a victory from this sorry state of affairs?

As Arde drew nearer the front of the column, the sounds of battle grew louder. Smoke choked his view of the road but not the white plumes of rifle fire, no. The brush to either side of the road crackled and burned, black smoke curling skyward as it was consumed by flames. Dead men lay scattered everywhere, reduced to blackened husk of men. It was impossible to tell if they were Votish soldiers or native ambushers. He slowed his pace, and abandoned the smoldering roadside ditch in favor of creeping between the abandoned carriages and smoking husk of dead horses which littered the road. Apparently the civil servants and other bureaucrats traveling with the column of soldiers had not been spared the attacker’s wrath.

>>
Voices and gunfire drifted down the road from up ahead. As Ardeshir advanced further, figures emerged from the smoke. Their tattered robes and the black sashes about their waist identified them as natives. The ambushers sheltered behind a tipped over cart, peeking over the top to take potshots before ducking back down to avoid return fire. Ardeshir laid flat against the ground, hiding himself behind the corpse of a horse and carefully shouldering his rifle. Before he had the chance to fire, a bullet punched a hole through the cart’s wooden bottom and took one of the men in the gut, doubling him over. He collapsed, clutching the wound and screaming at the top of his lungs until his companion retrieved a pistol from his sash and put a bullet through the dying man’s skull.

>Try to take the enemy captive. He’s just one man, and both his rifle and his pistol are unarmed.
>Shoot the native while he’s distracted and then make a break for the Votish lines. Hopefully you won’t get shot by an ally.
>This is hopeless, maybe if you pretended to be one of the ambushers you could get out of this alive? You’re half native, after all.

Indeed I am.
Ardeshir is half-Votish, half-Bashkani. His mother is a native prostitute in the army's baggage train. He has no idea who his father is.
He looks like a native, so the Votish may very well decide to shoot him. However, he was raised by the army, so he's probably more than a little attached to many/some of the Votish soldiers.

Lining up his sights with the native’s back, Arde slid his finger to the trigger. His breath was coming fast and heavy and his heart pounded in his throat, he’d never killed a man before mustering his courage he quickly depressed the trigger. The rifle bucked against his shoulder, but instead of planting a bullet firmly in the man’s spine his shot went wide. It put a hole through his voluminous robes before punching through the bottom of the cart, leaving only a flesh wound in its wake.

The wounded man cried out in a mix of shock and pain, whipping around to face Ardeshir where he remained sheltered beside the dead horse. His face was a mask of rage, and throwing aside his rifle he ripped one of the swords in the native pattern from his belt. Its curved blade seemed to dance in the firelight as he charged down the road, a ragged yell tearing from his throat.

>Try to get your pistol free from your belt before he can reach you.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bait to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

Arde pushes himself to his knees, grabbing the handle of his pistol where it protrudes from his sash and jerking it free. The native is barreling towards him, sword raised, and without thinking he shoves the pistol in the man’s general direction and fires. Smoke fills the air between Arde and his attacker, but a moment later the man’s blade cuts through the fog of war. It misses Ardeshir’s skull by a fraction of an inch, and in a panic he scrambles backwards.

Instinctively, Arde chucks his pistol at his native attacker. The wooden grip bounces harmlessly off the man’s broad chest, and with a sadistic grin he advances. “I’m going to enjoy disemboweling you, traitor.” He mutters in Ardeshir’s mother tongue, his grip tightening around the hilt of his sword. “It’s the fate all you fucking collaborators deserve!”

He raises the sword again, and by some miracle Ardeshir manages to retrieve his pesh-kabz from its sheath. He barely manages to interpose the blade between himself and the soldier’s pulwar. The sound of metal striking metal rang through the abandoned road, but it was followed in short order by Arde’s pained cry as the pulwar’s blade slid down past the guard-less hilt to score a deep gash along the back of his hand. The strength left his hand, and the knife slipped from Arde’s lifeless grip.

A sharp kick to the side of his head stunned Arde, and when his senses returned to him he felt cold steel digging into the tender flesh of his exposed throat. “Stupid cunt,” the soldier barked, digging his heel more firmly into Ardeshir’s chest. “I hope your ancestors cast you into the House of Lies for betraying our people.”

In that moment, Arde could only lament how pathetic his death would be. He would not be remembered in song, his story would not find its way into the tapestry of history. His life wasn’t even a footnote, just a nameless casualty of a battle that might not even be recorded. With his eyes wide Ardeshir searched his surroundings for anything, anything that all which might allow him to turn the tide. It was then that he noticed something odd. Thin bolts of electricity crackled along the man’s limbs, and in the air around him. It was the queerest thing he’d ever seen.

As the blade began to press more firmly into Ardeshir’s throat, he acted on instinct. Thrusting his hand towards his attacker, he willed the lightning to turn back in on its host.

Time seemed to slow as black spots swam through Arde’s vision, appearing across his attacker’s limbs and beginning to grow rapidly. Color seemed to drain from the scene before him, only the electric blue of the strange lightning spared as it curled in on its host, vanishing beyond the event horizon of the holes pockmarking his attacker’s robes. His pained cry was muted as more and more holes appeared across his frame, spreading to consume all that they touched. He didn’t even feel the strips of flesh peeling off his forearm, stripped by the winds of magic as they raged both within and without.

Ardeshir rose to his feet, keeping the palm of his hand pointed squarely at the native as the man writhed on the ground, his sword abandoned. He watched, even as the burst blood vessels in his eyes painted his sclera red, and the pain in the back of his head threatened to blind him. He watched until all that was left of the man was a shredded corpse, covered in unnaturally perfect holes, its blood turning the dirt road to mud

And then, without a word, the boy collapsed.

Ardeshir awoke with a start in his quarters, covered in sweat and sucking in great heaving lungfuls of air. deep within the bowels of the monastery. It was pitch black, but with a vague gesture the wicks of the oil lamps set into the walls ignited readily. They illuminated a depressingly bare room, empty save for the cot on which Ardeshir slept and the desk sitting by the ancient wooden door. It had been years since he’d had that dream, of the first time he’d killed a man. Of the discovery of his magical talent.

Throwing off the wet sheets, he swung his legs off the edge of the cot and rested his back against the cool stone wall. The cold sent a shiver down his spine, but it brought him back to the present. Today was a big day, he needed to have his wits about him if he was going to see the next.

After a few more minutes spent with his back pressed to the wall, Arde rose to his feet and made his from his bedroom to his sitting room. He found his clothes waiting for him on a bench by his bedroom door, neatly folded as he’d left them, and quickly set about the task of pulling them on. He grabbed a six foot strip of white cloth by its embroidered hem and wrapped it haphazardly about his waist, tucking and knotting to keep it in place before passing the excess on his right side through his legs. He pleated the fabric carefully and tucked it in at the small of his back. The process was mirrored with the fabric hanging from his left side, the pleats tucked in at his groin instead.

All that remained was to slip on his silken robes, dyed red with golden accents, and secure them about his waist with a plain black sash. There were a few adjustments that needed to be made, the loincloth in particular needed to be fiddled with until it was just right, but once he was satisfied that he looked presentable he grabbed his pesh-kabz knife from where it hung by the door. The weapon was of a simpler make than those of his peers, and truthfully ‘knife’ was a bit of a misnomer. From pommel to point it was just slightly shorter than the length of his arm, with an intensely heavy blade that narrowed to a sharp point. The blade had the slightest curve throughout its length and a thick spine, allowing the wielder to hack away wildly at their opponent without worrying about the weapon’s integrity.

Despite the ivory hilt and gold ornamentation on the blade and the scabbard, it was at heart a peasant’s weapon. Fitting considering Ardeshir had made it himself. He was probably the son of some foreign noble but since he didn’t know who his father was he had no status, and certainly lacked the wealth to commission even half as fine a blade from a professional smith. The iron ore he’d pulled from long-abandoned mines further up the slopes of the mountain, and Yazd Shadi had helped him smelt the steel to ensure it was of good quality. Ardeshir tucked the pesh-kabz into his sash, the smooth ivory of the hilt pressed into his palm a familiar comfort.

Once dressed he exited his suite of rooms into the prayer hall, where two of his fellow disciples were already prostrated before the statue of Sardar, the First King. The statue depicted him seated with his legs crossed in the lotus position, wielding a sword in his right hand and a scroll in his left. Ardeshir advanced to a cushion near the front of the hall and joined his brothers in prostrating himself before the statue. His own voice joined the soft susurrations which filled the room, the ritual of morning prayer soothing his frayed thoughts.

“From falsehood lead me to truth,” the prayer carried a musical lilt as it drifted from Ardeshir’s lips, elongated vowels flowing into one another and blurring the divisions between words. He’d always found Old Bashko to be a beautiful language, devoid of the harshness introduced by the Sabanyi. It was truly a shame that so few of his brothers and sisters bothered to actually learn the language beyond the daily prayers. “From darkness lead me to the light, from death lead me to immortality. This I ask of my ancestors, and offer my loyalty in turn. This I ask of my God-king, and offer my labor in turn. This I ask of Pyl, Kabig, Palang, and all the Old Gods of my people, offering my reverence in turn.”

When he’d concluded his prayers some few minutes later, Ardeshir rose to his feet. He bowed to the statue of Sardar once more before leaving the prayer hall. As the most senior disciple in the monastery by several years, he didn’t actually have that many duties that he couldn’t pawn off on someone younger. He’d break his fast and then his schedule was clear until the evening.

Worried by the prospect of wasted time, Arde occupied himself as he made his way through labyrinthine hallways and spiraling staircases to the dining hall hosting a vigorous internal debate over the merits of spending some time in the yard practicing his swordplay versus going on a hike up the mountain to train his endurance. The debate still raged even as he wandered through the abandoned dining hall, most of the other disciples still sleeping at this early hour.

Fortunately there were voices in the kitchen, and when Ardeshir shouldered open the heavy wooden door he found the various servants of the monastery hard at work preparing breakfast for the few hundred disciples and monastic officials. They were assisted in their duties by the younger disciples, and Arde remembered fondly the years he spent in the kitchen. The heat issuing from the hot coals sitting at the bottom of any of a dozen tandoor ovens took some getting used to, but sweltering though it was there was something pleasant about working in the kitchen.

One of the youths drew the attention of the bawarchi and pointed out Ardeshir standing by the door. The chef was an aged woman; heavy set, wrinkled, and notoriously irritable, but to her credit she ran her kitchen with all the disciple of a Votish regiment. “Gods damn you, boy!” She cried upon setting her cataracts-fogged eyes upon Ardeshir, a. “Every morning you ravenous locust come barging in as if you own the place! Out! Out! I will send a stripling when the food is prepared!”

Ardeshir obliged, retreating from the kitchen with his hands raised in surrender. He took a seat at one of the benches nearest the kitchen door and resigned himself to wait. Fortunately it wasn’t long before the same young girl that pointed him out when he entered the kitchen emerged bearing aloft a heavy plate laden with his morning meal.

Breakfast was a simple affair, as it always was. Lavash bread, goat cheese, and fig jam accompanied by sweetened black tea. Whatever disciple had brewed the tea this morning had done a poor job of it, it was far too dark for Ardeshir’s taste, but the fig jam was a welcome addition to the otherwise typical fair. Summer was turning to fall, which meant the main harvest was coming in from the orchards. This batch of jam was undoubtedly richer than the spring crop, and the sweetness really complemented the tang of the goat cheese.

(Still writing the sword practice, but I wanted to go ahead and post breakfast.

With his hanger satiated, the time had finally come to make a decision. His defeat at the hands of what was, at best, an amateur swordsman fresh in his memory Ardeshir resolved to get in some work in the training yard. A few of his fellow disciples were starting to filter in to the dining hall, so hopefully he could find someone going through their forms at this early hour to spar with. If not, he could always just run through more tedious exercises.

The yard was placed directly above the dining hall, in a courtyard surrounded by a shaded peristyle where the other disciples and their instructors could gather to observe in comfort. After exiting into the hallway Ardeshir navigated the halls to a simple wooden ladder, using it to scale his way up to the surface. The monastery’s ground level was much more open than the others, a relic of when the monastery still needed to be defensible. In times of siege the top floor could be abandoned and the lower floors sealed with magic. The defenders could survive below for months at a time, and there were numerous hidden passages from which they could strike out at their besiegers or smuggle in supplies.

Emerging into the main hall, Ardeshir allowed himself a moment to get his bearings. The sound of water bubbling up from the top of the fountain at the center of the room served as a pleasant backdrop to the conversation of several Herbadan gathered to discuss the morning’s news. Something about a war, though Ardeshir wasn’t truly paying attention. He quickly abandoned the main hall in favor of the training yard.

The sun had only just begun its journey across the sky, but already a handful of his peers filled the yard. He saw a young man and a girl of similar age, both probably no older than fourteen, struggling to wield the weighted practice swords. They swung wildly at one another, neither quite able to land a solid blow. Sister Darya was also running through her forms this morning, her lithe frame dancing across the cobblestones, the steel of her blade flashing in the early morning light. Brother Soroush, a tremendously fat bastard with a mean temper, was also taking out some aggression on a training dummy.

Drumming his fingers against the grip of his pesh-kabz, Arde considered his options for a moment before focusing his attention on Darya. She wielded in one hand a far more ornate pesh-kabz than the one strapped to Ardeshir’s waist, the gold filigree roaming across its curved blade rendered indistinct by the speed with which she swung it about her frame. Most duelist wielded a shield in their offhand, but Darya preferred instead a thick steel gauntlet which covered the length of her forearm. It was a deceptively effective defense, though personally Arde couldn’t understand how she avoided breaking her arm every time she deflected a blow.

Retrieving a buckler off a rack at the edge of the yard, Ardeshir waited for a lull in the woman’s routine. In the meantime he ran himself through a few preliminary stretches, working the stiffness from his limbs and shaking off the last vestiges of sleep. Only once Darya stopped running through forms to fetch a drink of water did she finally notice Arde waiting at the edge of the yard.

She gestured to herself, one eyebrow quirked inquisitively, to which Ardeshir nodded. She returned the gesture, retreating from the training yard to fetch a drink from a fountain set in the western wall before making her way over to the pillar beside which Arde was waiting. “Looking to spar?”

“Indeed I am.” He replied simply, drawing his pesh-kabz halfway from its ornamented sheath. “Are you alright with using live steel, or would you rather we take advantage of the blunted training blades?”

She held up her own knife, drawing her thumb lightly across the edge to test its sharpness. “Live steel is fine, I need to sharpen my knife anyway. Duel to first blood or to submission?”

“Depends on how competitive you’re feeling.” He smiled, pulling his weapon free and starting towards one end of the training yard. “If you’re actually going to surrender when you know you’re beaten, then submission. Otherwise first blood will at least keep you honest.”

She rolled her eyes. “Big words for a man who walked away from our last match unconscious. Submission is fine. Magic allowed?”

“Of course, where do you think we are?” He asked upon reaching the other end of the field and assuming the first position, his sword pointed towards the cobblestones and his shield raised defensively to protect his chest. “May the best disciple win.”

Darya decided that was as good a starting signal as any, advancing rapidly across the training yard with her blade held out defensively between herself and her opponent.

>>
>>2930902

Variety of questions, honestly.

Let's say the DC is 40/60/80

And the three rolls are, after adding modifiers

10

10

100

Now, would a regular failure for a spell of weak strength be better or worse than a regular failure for a spell of above middling strength?

As in, better to fail the low DC or the high DC.

My gut says the latter, but depending on the spell/situation/ramifications for failure, maybe its better to fail on a spell that expends less "man" than a spell that expends a bunch of mana.

Furthermore, lets say the rolls are

40

60

100

so you've got

Great Success for the low DC

regular success for the middle DC

failure for the high DC

Now, maybe its bettter to regular success the middle but maybe we'd prefer to great success the low DC. Or hell, maybe for some reason its better to go with the failure.

Continuing on, lets say the rolls are

10

10

10

Now that's a severe failure no matter what, but why not go big with our severe failure?

Severe failure the HIGHEST DC POSSIBLE unlesss that's bad or just not even allowed in this "rules system"

two rolls meeting the dc is a success

none is a severe fail
Meeting higher DC's just means you succeed better or more skillfully at your goal

I could see practical reasons why it might be beneficial to scale the power of a spell selectively. Like, say you want to distract some guards by dislodging a brick. You wouldn't want to send the brick flying across the yard, you'd just want a weak spell.

However, on a practical level I'm probably not going to make you roll to cast a weak spell when you're not under duress, and when you are under duress I like the idea that there might be overkill or a spell might not pack as much of a punch as was hoped.

Anyway, in terms of effect getting a great success on a lower tier DC is more or less equivalent to getting a regular success on the next tier up. The difference is mostly in the fluff. If you'd gotten a regular success on the highest DC for the last roll, I'd probably have half the training yard's cobblestones ripped up by the spell. However; your opponent would counter it with her own magic so that overall it only impeded her to the same degree that a great success on a middling spell would have impeded her.

As the roll stands now, less of the courtyard will be destroyed and overall she's not going to be impeded as much as she would be if half the courtyard was destroyed. However, she won't be able to counter the spell at all. She'll take the full strength of the middling strength spell, and your control will be absolute.

Mana isnt going to be a huge deal. Theres not really an internal store of magic. All magic is drawn from the field that surrounds and suffuses all things, and channeled through the will of the caster to affect reality. Backlash is mostly going to be the result of player's decisions, and I'm going to clearly call it out in the vote. I'll make a dedicate system for it later if I need to.
>>
>>2931724
Is this my trip?
>>
>>2931724
See, no offence, but that seems slightly borked.

I guess if you vaguely want to not have higher numbers intrinsically mean better results that's one thing, but the fact that we rolled just low enough to NOT fuck up a larger portion of the courtyard (thus causing less collateral damage which I think would be considered a plus since this is our home) but high enough to effectively have the same mechanical flow in the combat (we gain a reasonable advantage in the fight) makes me glad we didn't get a regular success of the higher spell tier.

Rather than charging across the courtyard to meet his opponent, Ardeshir allowed his eyes to slip closed. Time seemed to slow, and the sounds of the training yard faded away until all that remained was a dull hum. When again he opened his eyes, the world was transformed. Color had vanished from the world, save for the electric blue which emanated from the surface of Darya’s skin, bolts of lightning twisting around her form like warped tentacles. She was powerful, that much was clear. Every movement distorted the Tavan, warping reality to fit her unconscious whims.

Ardeshir extended his hand, wreathed though it was in the metallic grip of his buckler, and watched as an electric extension of his own will lashed out at the tiles beneath his opponent’s feat. The tip of the lightning bolt split into a hundred thin tendrils, latching onto the stones for a fraction of a second before a whim on his part ripped them forcefully from the mortar which secured them.

He watched as the expression on Darya’s face shifted in slow motion from grim determination to panicked surprise. She had little time to react, as dozens of fist-sized stones flew up to meet her. She was knocked further off balance when one such stone slammed into her jaw, twisting her head to the side and throwing off her momentum. Her shoulder was the first thing to hit the ground, but it was followed shortly by the side of her head bouncing off the amalgam of sun-dried brick and shattered mortar which laid beneath the cobbles.

The momentum of the rest of her body carried her forward, turning the fall into more of a roll that ended with her sprawled out on her back. Already she was struggling back to her feet, but the tide of battle had undoubtedly shifted in Ardeshir’s favor.

Color returned suddenly and sharply to the world, and the sounds of the training yard rushed to greet him. Liberated from the influence of his will the cobblestones flew wildly in every direction. Soroush shouted wordlessly as he was peppered with stones, and the dueling youths dived for cover. However, Ardeshir was focused solely on his opponent. He crossed the few feet that separated them in a flash, burying his knee into her gut as he fell upon her. He tried to maneuver his blade to her throat but she batted the weapon aside with her armored forearm.

Darya’s steel-clad knuckles crunched into his nose, sending blood pouring freely from his broken face, but Arde wasn’t deterred. He brought the pommel of his knife down onto the top of her skull, stunning her, but before he could press the edge into the soft flesh of her throat her knee smashed into his groin, the pain severe enough to drive the air from his lungs. Darya rolled, taking Ardeshir with her, but before she could fully reverse their positions Arde punched the edge of his buckler into her throat. She scrambled off of him, dry heaving and coughing as she tried desperately to suck in a lungful of air.

The two opponents separated, Darya struggling to breathe and Ardeshir just barely able to get back onto his feet. He felt like he might vomit, but as a jet of flame shot from Darya’s palm to coat the ruined floor it became clear that there was little time to contemplate his own agony. Ardeshir needed to act, before the vile bitch destroyed his favorite set of robes.

He could just barely see the afterimage of his aura flaring out to seize the very wind itself, whipping the air into a ferocious cyclone which only barely served to protect Arde from the torrent of flames spilling out around his feet. He could feel Darya’s will opposing his own, the flames roiled around him as if alive, pressing and probing for any weakness in his cloak of wind. Fire licked at his robes and the heat was oppressive, but Ardeshir’s will held out against Darya’s assault.

Sprinting across the destroyed courtyard, Ardeshir attempted to smash his buckler into the side of Darya’s head. She ducked underneath the blow and used his own momentum against him, bringing her knee up into his gut before slipping off to the side. Spittle flew from Ardeshir’s mouth as he doubled over, barely warding her off with a wild slash which forced some distance between the two opponents.

Ardeshir’s nose was broken, his balls ached, and his lungs burned from the effort of drawing breath. Part of him wondered if it was worth it to fight on. Of course, Darya was in no better shape. Her hair was matted with blood, her face and neck were swollen and discolored, and with the way she was swaying on her feet a stiff breeze might knock her over.

Color faded and time slowed once more from the world as Ardeshir focused on his opponent. The electric aura which surrounded her twitched spasmodically, lightning shooting erratically from the halo of blue fire which surrounded her head. She was on edge, watching him for any signs of aggression. Ardeshir would need to act quickly if he wanted to give himself a real chance of winning this.

His will lashed out, coiling loosely around the gauntlet on her left hand and jerking it upwards. Her own will leapt to respond, but it was already too late. He was already moving when the back of her hand smashed into her nose. Hopefully the surprise of being betrayed by her own limb and the pain of the blow would be enough to finally finish this.

Time accelerated as Ardeshir shifted his focus from enforcing his will upon reality to battling the woman in front of him. He lashed out with his knife, the tip leaving a deep gash across Darya’s abdomen as she leapt backwards. She brought her own blade to bear against him, steel clashing against steel as she batted Ardeshir’s pesh-kabz to the side. The last he remembered of the fight was the flare of pain across the front of his skull as his opponent smashed her forehead into his own. After that, everything was black.

Pain is what eventually woke Ardeshir, screaming, from the grip of unconsciousness. The pain of having Yazd Sudhir jerk his shattered nose back into something resembling its proper form. He was laid down on a cot, pinned by his would-be healers muscular frame. A series of cracks and pops sounded from his nose as the older man asserted his will upon the world, Sakti knitting together bones and mending tissue.

When it was over his nose ached terribly, but he could breathe through it again. His work done, Yazd Sudhir dismounted Arde and instead turned his attention to the figure sprawled out across a neighboring cot. It took Ardeshir a few seconds to realize the figure was in fact Darya, her face swollen and disfigured from their earlier sparring session.

“Thanks for destroying the courtyard, by the way.” Sudhir commented absentmindedly as his will lashed out to drag a stool from across the room. It came to rest underneath him just in time to catch the man’s weight. “You know I always love being woken in the early morning to the news that my students have created a new chore for me. Sitting down in the dining hall to enjoy tea is for lesser men.”

He carefully probed Darya’s injuries, his frown deepening as he explored the bruises covering the right side of her face. “By the King and the Old Gods, she’s a tough bitch isn’t she? Think you might have fractured her jaw.”

“Do you mind if I watch while you heal her wounds?” Ardeshir asked, still rubbing the bridge of his nose. “I must admit I’m curious, it seems few of our brothers and sisters choose the path of the healer.”

Yazd Sudhir shrugged, more interested in carefully manipulating the bones of Darya’s jaw. He had his thumbs buried so far in her mouth Ardeshir thought he might be trying to pull teeth. “I suppose if you’d like, but allow me to shed a little light on why exactly it is most avoid the healing arts.” A sharp pop rang out as the Yazd pulled down on Darya’s jaw. Ardeshir winced, expecting the woman to awaken from the pain, but by some miracle she remained unconscious. “It’s not a glamorous profession. It requires skill not only in magic but in surgical practice as well. You can’t just wave your fingers over someone’s shattered femur and expect everything to knit itself back together. You’re more likely to cripple them for life.”

The Yazd frowned as his fingers played once more along Darya’s jawline, and over the course of a few minutes made several more corrections to the positioning of the bone. The flesh was horribly swollen, more so than it had been before, and discolored an ugly purple. Arde trusted that Sudhir knows what he was doing, but he couldn’t deny that it looked as if his incessant prodding did more harm than good.

Ardeshir shifted his focus from the scene before him to the underlying currents of magic. Color quickly drained from the scene, casting the infirmary in shades of grey. The monotony was soon broken by the manifested will of Darya and Yazd Sudhir. The electric blue which had so violently undulated around Darya during their duel now appeared subdued. A sharp glow emanated from her skin, occasional tendrils of electricity arcing away from her unconscious form to connect briefly either with the Yazd or with Ardeshir himself before winking out of existence.

The Yazd provided sharp contrast. He was a beacon glowing in what seemed a darkened room by comparison. The lines of golden lacquer which twisted across his arms and torso practically pulsed with magical power, arcs electricity bowing out from the surface of his skin only to be reabsorbed by the swirls of gold. It almost made Ardeshir giddy to think that, by the dawn of the next day, he would posses markings of his own. Markings which could triple, or even quadruple his body’s ability to channel the fundamental forces of creation.

(1/2)
>>
Arde was ultimately distracted from thoughts of the future by the extension of will reaching out from Yazd Sudhir’s finger to probe along Darya’s broken jaw. He watched as the tendril split into a dozen different threads, which in turn separated further into untold hundreds of impossibly thin strands. These slivers of the Yazd’s aura penetrated the skin of Darya’s cheek, coiling around her fractured jaw. At first he hadn’t been able to figure out what they were doing, but as more and more of the threads coiled around the bone their purpose became clear. They were forming a map of the bone, and when they were finished the position of the fracture became clear.

Once the tendrils had finished mapping the bone, they consolidated into a handful of threads all embedded in the fractured portions of the bone. The tavan warped around them, their light seeming to bend and distort as the Yazd exerted his will upon reality. Slowly, the bone knit together. Ardeshir couldn’t determine if Sudhir was actually creating new bone, or if he was somehow manipulating the body’s natural healing process. Either would be an incredibly difficult task even for skilled Yazdan.

The extension of the Yazd’s will split again, and again, and again, until slivers of power could spread out across nearly the whole of Darya’s skull. They made quick, minor adjustments to less serious injuries, only rarely did they consolidate to heal a more serious wound. All told Sudhir required only a half hour to complete his work, and when he was done the tendril of sakti vanished without a trace. No doubt it was incorporated back into the tavan.

Color returned sharply once Ardeshir returned his focus to the scene before him, rather than the magic being worked. Darya was still unconscious, but no longer was her face disfigured by swollen masses of discolored flesh. Her breath was slow and even, she appeared to be sleeping peacefully despite how mangled she’d been only minutes ago.

At least, she slept peacefully until a sphere of water appeared hovering in the air above her. It dropped suddenly and without warning, splashing across her face. The wave of cold water shocked Darya awake, and she bolted upright sputtering loudly and waving an arm to defend against some unseen attacker. It was only once she realized she was in the infirmary that she finally fell, panting, back into the cot.

>Well, you don’t know about her but you could really use a bath. Excuse yourself.
>See if you can’t get Yazd Sudhir to give you a little bit of hash. Your nose still aches terribly, after all.
>Congratulate her on a hard won victory. You’re sure she’ll hear about how she kicked your ass later, from Soroush if nobody else.

Yazd Sudhir performed a few final checks on Darya now that she was awake, poking along her jaw and questioning her extensively about any pain she was still experiencing. It was a level of care which Ardeshir did not receive, but of course his injuries had not been as severe. Once the Yazd was satisfied with the quality of his work, he rose from his stool and wandered off towards a collection of bottles, jars, and vials which lined a series of shelves on one of the walls.

“I guess you finally broke the pattern, Darya, that’s twice in a row you’ve beaten me," Ardeshir admitted with a note of reluctance. "Though I’ll soothe my wounded ego with the knowledge that it was a close contest.”

Darya propped herself up, arms extended behind her to support her weight on the cot's frame. “If my control over the tavan was not so poor then perhaps that would not have been the case,” she grumbled. “I feel as if your will is this unassailable wall, and though my swordplay is better you very nearly ended the battle before it began.”

“Yes, well,” Ardeshir stood, rolling his right shoulder until he earned a satisfying pop. “I suppose that’s what happens when you focus on martial pursuits to the exclusion of the mystic arts we’re theoretically here to study.”

She punched him roughly in the thigh for the insult. “Typical, I should know by now to never pay you a compliment.”

“I’m teasing, Darya, Gods’ sakes,” Arde complained, reaching down to ruffle the woman’s black hair despite her obvious displeasure. This morning she’d had it braided up into a tight bun, but now it spilled down her back in a wild, tangled mass. “More seriously you’ve only been here for, what, four years? Prior to that you were no doubt some pampered noble girl, your only goal in life to marry well and bear your husband’s children. I was born with an exceptional resistance to the inherent strain of channeling the forces of creation, and I’ve been training to swing a blade practically since I could walk. That aside I’ve had eight years in the monastery to refine my skills both as a warrior and a scholar. If anything the progress you’ve made has been truly remarkable.”

A blush colored Darya’s cheeks and she grew very interested in whatever it was Yazd Sudhir was doing on the other side of the room. “You give me too much credit, and humility truthfully doesn’t suit you.” She sat up properly, swinging her legs out over the side of the cot and rising to her feet. “If you’ll excuse me, I plan on spending the next few hours soaking in the baths.”

“Enjoy the running water while you can, I have a feeling that outside the monastery it will be a rare luxury.” Ardeshir stepped aside, allowing her to slip past him on her way to the door, and once she’d gone his attention turned to Yazd Sudhir.

The man was hunched over a squat table, carefully measuring out brittle yellow flakes of insect resin into a thick glass container filled a third of the way with powdered gold. “What is it?” Sudhir mumbled absentmindedly, shaking out a few more flakes of resin.

“Any chance you’d be willing to provide me with a measure of hashish?” Ardeshir asked, gently rubbing the bridge of his nose. “I feel it would help me focus in preparation for the ceremony tonight.”

The Yazd offered no reply, at least not at first. Once he’d finished sprinkling resin into the mixture he transfered the jar to an iron stand, and with an errant gesture created a flame underneath to heat the contents. The resin quickly lost its form, but the gold powder was more resistant to the temperature change. With the most apparently detail intensive part of the process finished, he turned his attention fully to Ardeshir. “Hashish? Sure, though I don’t know if I’d recommend smoking before a potentially fatal ritual. Death is rare but pouring molten metal into channels freshly gouged out of your flesh isn’t exactly the safest practice from a medical perspective.”

Sudhir glanced up at the shelves, pulling down a brown glass jar. The first sputtered at the lack of his attention but burned steady once more when he set the heavy jar down on the table. As soon as he lifted the top from the bottle the earthy, sweet stench of hash assaulted Arde’s nostrils. It almost reminded him of cinnamon, especially as the Yazd reached into the jar and dug his fingers into its contents. He tossed the black, oily mass which he extracted over his shoulder, where it began to hover in place. Slowly it was reformed into a perfect sphere, the bits and pieces left stuck to his palm ripping free to join with the larger portion.

The Yazd opened a handful of wooden boxes stacked on the table before settling on one, the ball flying seemingly of its own volition into the bottom of the box. He snapped it shut, and handed it to Ardeshir. “I trust you’ve already got a pipe?”

“Indeed I do,” He replied, bowing his head to the older man. “Thank you again, Yazd Sudhir. I’ll take your advice under consideration.”

The Yazd dismissed him with a wave of his hand, and Arde retreated into the hallways beyond the infirmary’s door. It was still abandoned at this early hour, save for a temple cat curled up in a corner with its head tucked between its paws.

Indeed it was! There weren't very many notable rings, so this question might have been too easy. Asking what the inscription on the ring was, however, seemed unreasonably hard. Perhaps I'll add a 'God' category for stuff that nobody would be able to get without looking it up.

>fuck if I remember
Unfortunately this answer is wrong. The actual city name is Marqash. A good litmus test for answers for city names is to check if they sound Roman or Middle Eastern. Your answer "fuck if I remember" bears no similarities to such names, so it wasn't likely to be correct. That's ok though, this question was for Grandmasters, after all!

Great job anon! You got all the way up to the Master level on this session of trivia. Most vatis never achieve the rank of Grandmaster because doing so is dangerous and requires more skill or dedication than they possess. Achieving such power is also not necessary or even not possible for some vatis, perhaps you just lack the magical potential or perhaps you don't need that kind of power. All that matters is that you tried your best! See you next time!

Trivia! Battle outside our brother's city edition!

>Novice
What is the name of the god or goddess that ostensibly shepherds dead souls to the afterlife?

>Apprentice
What is the name of the part of the soul that prevents the shard of divinity within mortals from being whisked away?

>Vatis
What was the name taken by the boy Mikhael resurrected?

>Master: answer any one of these questions correctly to achieve this rank.
What is the name of the older brother whom we visited on the way to Elaudia?
What was the name of his city?
The attack on our brother's city was orchestrated by a rival noble family. What is that family's name?

>Grandmaster
What is the title granted the MVPs of combat in Slamjam society?

Pani is said to handle reincarnation but as we learned surya is stealing souls to try and be less of a cuckold.

>Pani
Correct! Furthermore, you are right that Surya is the divine equivalent of a cuckold and as futilely seeking to consume mortal souls to regain his lost power. Interestingly enough, this has become twisted in the contemporary worship of Surya to believing that honorable death in battle ushers you to some warrior's paradise. In fact, what really occurs is that the quantity of death in the localized area means that not every soul can be reclaimed quickly enough, and Surya is able to snag some of them. There is no special paradise, they just become part of Surya. That said, if you worship the being, perhaps becoming one with him is what you would consider paradise. Mikhael, personally, can't relate.

>Shell
Correct! A barrier so impassable that not even localized control of reality lets you through!

>mikhael abdul hakim jr.
Unfortunately this is incorrect. The correct answer is Vicitra, which I would guess has some sort of clever meaning related to being a resurrected amnesiac if you translate it from terrorist into english, but you'd have to ask Soma because I can't remember if he/Mikhael ever said anything about it.

>mikhael abdul hakim Number 2
>the estate jumbo sized
>demir
Incorrect! Our brother's name was in fact, Zaahir. Names are tricky to remember when you don't care though, so that's why there are more questions.
Incorrect! Our brother's city was called Nazir. We were there rather recently, but getting it wrong is ok because of question three.
Correct! The Demirs are indeed our rival family. Unfortunately this question was a bit of a freebie since their name appeared in the previous trivia post. Still, good enough.

>"Almost as good as mik"
This is in fact, entirely incorrect. Those who are specially honored in combat as most valuable player are called "Matha" in Slamjam culture. In the most recent battle in BQ, Mik was named Matha for his incredibly deeds. Because of this, and the fact that Mik is precisely as good as Mik, your answer is incorrect.

Frankly this is a somewhat poor showing. With our recent trespasses against the gods, Vicitra has become something of an important name. I would expect someone paying attention to recent BQ threads to know it. You barely passed the master section with a regular success, and does it really count if you used a bunch of meditation aids? Your rank for this trivia session in Apprentice. Try harder next time.

That's a bad example because I wouldn't love my wife anymore. Love transcends the barriers of time, which means that when I find out that my wife is cheating on me all the love goes away and I retroactively was not doing something that I loved.
