The eyes of judgement are boring into your conscious, unnerving you despite you going into this with full faith in your fellow club members. True, you only gave the thing a quick scan, but just because you haven’t really read it doesn’t mean it was bad. There were pictures and everything! The Student Council President, Hanako, goes over flowery journal, making the occasional sound of thinking before turning the page. You have no idea whether or not they’re the sounds of discontent or interest, though they could be both.

You had been elected to be the one to hand it over, and the ones who did the electing watch carefully behind you, using you as a shield of sorts. However, Miku is to your left; she’s one step behind too, which kind of defeats the purpose of her taking her role as actual club president.

After what felt like the longest couple minutes of your life, Hanako finally says, “It’s good.” She closes it, flips it around, and hands it back to you. “Could be a little more...” she says, pausing for a moment to find the right words, “...professional, but it’s good. Well done. You are going to make more of these, right?”

“That’s the plan,” you say. Taking the book, you let out a silent breath of relief. “You don’t want one of these every week, do you? Because that’s way too much.”

“No, maybe once a month. I can tell you rushed this out, and I’d imagine all of you would manage something even better if you’re given more time.” Hanako gives everyone a quiet smile. “Take your time. I’ll leave you all be, then.” Then to you, she says, “Was it you, or was it her?” Her eyes glance over to Miku for a second, who responds with a questioning look.

You ask, “Huh?”

“I mean, who was the club president again?” she feigns.

Miku, exasperated, looks as if she’s about to roll her eyes.

“Me, obviously,” you answer. “Who else?”

“Hey!” Miku snaps, “I’m right here!”

Hanako smirks, somewhat in disbelief. “Hm, I thought as much.”

Miku’s eyes widen. “Huh? What?!”

With a wave, Hanako says goodbye. “Good luck, then.”

“I’m the Club President! Me!” Miku says right before the door closes, clearly being ignored. There’s a brief moment of silence as her brain processes what’s happened, and then she says to you, overly haughty, “Are you trying to overthrow me? End my rule over the club? Planning a mutiny?”

“It was a joke,” you say, walking away from her. You spot Hinami relieved that the world isn’t over and Nemuri trying to hide a smirk from forming.

“What did she mean by that?” Miku asks, “I can be responsible too, you know. I take charge!”

Dropping down into a chair, you reply, “She was joking.”

“Yeah, and I was the butt of it!” she replies.

“Wow, you are really bothered by this.”

Her expression is replaced by annoyed reluctance. “So what?”

Nemuri clears her throat and says to Miku, “So, club president, what are we doing today?”

She crosses her arms in response. “Hmmf. Yeah, club president, what are we doing?” She’s clearly talking to you.

The impromptu staring contest between you and Miku ends with you breaking away first. You’ll just go with it. “How about somewhere cursed?” you ask, “I think we gathered enough luck and charms to not be doomed.”

Hinami, nervously, says, “I, uh... do we have to?”

“I thought it’d be a nice change of pace. Might be interesting—” trying your best to make it seem you’re not encouraging everyone to go spelunking in an evil crypt, you stop when you remember something. “Oh yeah, Aya wanted something. Not somewhere cursed, someone.”

Miku acts as if she wants to say something but tries her hardest not to.

Nemuri replies, “Someone’s... cursed?”

“She says one of her club members is being haunted by a ghost. Or a stalker. Or a bully. Apparently, his things keep being misplaced. Either the culprit is really good at picking locks, or they phased through his locker to steal his shoes.”

Miku rolls her eyes. “Who would want to take something like that? And it’s obviously not a ghost.”

Nemuri raises her hands. “Sorry, this isn’t my thing. I’m not getting mixed up in this.”

Distraught, Hinami quietly tells you, “Me too. I think I’m going to sit this one out.”

You purse your lips. You probably shouldn’t have said to Aya you were going to give it a glance over if everyone else wasn’t going. Turning to Miku and expecting her to sit this one out, you find yourself surprised to hear her say, “I’ll help.”

“...Thanks,” you tell her.

“What, did you think I was going to sit this one out? This is Occult Club business, isn’t it?” she replies. You already know where she’s getting at without her saying it outright.

Nemuri says, “Don’t worry about us, we definitely won’t be here reading and eating snacks the entire time and will definitely be doing something productive. Good luck with the ghost hunt.” The only reply Miku bothers with is a thanks.

Exiting the room after Miku, you gently close the door, heading into the hallway. One look at her and you can tell she’s still bothered by Hanako’s comment.

And yours too, to some extent.

There’s a short moment where the silence is only broken up by footsteps and the quiet, passing din of the other clubs.

You say, ”I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings with the whole president thing. Everyone knows you’re the real foundation of the club.”

She eyes you suspiciously. “Is that sarcasm?”

“What do you think?”

Miku mulls over it. “Hey, am I unreliable?”

“Hm?” you ask, not quite sure where’s she’s getting at.

“I mean, if you’re ever in trouble...” she says, hesitating, “Would I be someone you go to for help?”

“Well obviously,” you reply, “You are my best friend.”

There’s an instant where she’s taken aback, a swirl of emotions that you wonder if you were mistaken, but it quickly disappears, replaced by a simple grin. “Thanks. I guess I could act a little more like Hanako sometimes. Stiff, mature, responsible, you know.”

You laugh. “I can’t imagine you like that.”

“Hey! I can do it if I try!” she replies.

By the time the two of you reach the Newspaper club, you feel the tension from before gone, now replaced with the reluctance to see Aya. Miku leads the way, opening the door. The chief editor spots you as soon as you spot her, and she hails you over.

Eyeing the stacks of notebooks and stray sheets of paper littered across computers and desks, you make your way over.

Miku says, “Aya! How’s it been?” The two of them exchange a couple of pleasantries while you do with a simple nod for a greeting. “I heard you needed our help?”

Aya, seemingly having trouble with actually explaining, opts to introduce someone who was sitting down and typing away at his keyboard. “This is Daisuke.” She introduces the two of you to him.

He greets the two of you. “Hi, nice to meet you. I’m, uh, having a bit of a ghost problem. I heard you can exorcise it?”

You mumble out, “Did I hear that right?”

Daisuke says, “An exorcism. The occult club can do it, right? I don’t know who else can do it.”

He’s completely serious.

You glance at Miku, who glances at you for a hint as to what to do. You have no idea.

“...Sure,” you say.

Daisuke breaks out in a wide smile. “Thank you! I’m so relieved. I just want to be free. I can’t even sleep right.”

Miku asks, “How, uh, do you know it’s a ghost? Could be lots of things, you know.” She’s probably thinking something like, “It’s hard to get rid of something that isn’t there.”

While Aya steps out of the conversation to watch anxiously at Miku’s skepticism, Daisuke replies, “It has to be a ghost. It can’t be anything else. Things just don’t disappear, okay? I’ve asked my friends, and they’re not messing with me.” Or they’re really good at gaslighting him.

You ask, “Did you... uh... do something to get a dead person angry at you?”

“No! No way,” he replies. And then sheepishly, he adds, “Maybe. You know the story about the boy who fell off the school roof, right? I may or may not have made a joke about him a while ago. Okay, it’s not as bad as it sounds. A friend was playing in the stairs and almost fell and I told him he was going to end up as the second ghost haunting the school. He didn’t fall and die, if you’re wondering.”

You nod, hiding your complete disbelief.

Miku says, half in jest, “I didn’t know ghosts were so...”

“Petty,” you finish her sentence. “We’ll get rid of it, leave it to us.”

Aya, under her breath, says, “I can’t wait to see this.” You just barely hear it.

Thinking for a moment, you wonder what to do next. “Ah, Miku, Hinami’s...”

“It’s okay,” she replies, “I know how to perform an exorcism!” You give her a hesitant nod right before she whispers, “I saw it in a movie once.” It takes everything you have to not shake your head at her.

Turning your attention directly away, you ask, “Daisuke, is there any place where the ghost appears most often?”

He replies, “The classroom, maybe? I don’t really notice it until after.”

You have your doubts.

You see a lightbulb going off in Miku’s head. She asks you, “Remember that room Hinami used last time? The one that no one ever goes into. Let’s go there to exorcise Daisuke!”

You ask, “You think he’s being possessed?”

“It’s either that, or he has a medical condition where he has blackouts where he doesn’t remember doing something and is going to die unless he’s rushed to the hospital,” she answers.

Daisuke, horrified, replies, “I’m not having blackouts! I would know, or at least, someone would’ve said something.”

Miku, satisfied, says to you, “There we go.” Though you have no idea what is going on in her head, you might as well go with it.

You point out, “It’s locked, though.”

Aya interjects, “I can get the key. I’ll meet you guys there.” As she rushes off, you practically deflate, out of things to complain about.

The remaining three of you head toward the room in question, and Daisuke is the first to speak.

To Miku, he asks, “Do you really think I’m being possessed?”

“Hm, it’s a little more complicated than that,” she replies. Oh. You recognize that face. It’s the face Miku makes when she’s making something up with complete confidence. “We’re going to lure the spirit into a trap and then banish it. In order to do that, having a controlled environment is super important.”

He nods along, eager to listen. Miku says some things that you’re sure you heard Hinami say a while ago, and all you do is nod along. Soon enough, Aya returns with a key in her hand. She unlocks the door, and Miku ushers Daisuke in.

Before you enter, Aya stops you. She says, “What are you going to do, light the ghost on fire?”

“Seriously? Aya—“

“I didn’t exactly come to you guys to do some actual magic mumbojumbo. I thought you would, oh I don’t know, actually investigate?”

“This is what he wants,” you reply, “This is what he asked for.”

“I was really hoping you’d tell him ghosts don’t exist,” she replies, “You believe in that garbage? Don’t tell me I thought you were smarter than you actually were. And don’t tell me I got this wrong. This is a place he’s never been before; there is no investigating here.”

She has a point.

“What, scared of a little haunting?”

“Sorry, I’m not a superstitious idiot,” she replies, “I believe in what I can see, and ghosts, as far as I know, aren’t real. Really, you’re just wasting everyone’s time.”

“Whoa, are you getting a little defensive there?” you say, trying to stop yourself from smirking. “Tell you what. After this, I can help you. Happy?”

“I’d be happier if you investigated it yourself so I can actually get work done,” she replies, “But it looks like I can’t really trust you alone. Fine, I’ll hold you to your word.”

Aya stops accosting you and finally decides to enter the room. Following right after, you tell yourself that she owes you after this.

Inside, you see that Miku has already drawn a circle with some chalk she found in the room. Though all the decorations and black curtains were taken down, the fact is that the classroom was in a place that the sun never manage to get past the windows. It was dark, dusty, and frankly, uncomfortable. Which means, it’s the perfect place to freak Daisuke out.

Miku, holding a jar of something, says to him, “ ‘Kay, let me go over it again. You sit in the center of the circle, get the attention of the ghost, then we purify it. Normally, it’ll be easier to help the ghost move on, but banishing it will have to do. Got it?” Fidgeting, Daisuke nods. He goes over to the chalk drawing and sits down, crossing his legs. He takes a deep, nervous breath, unable to stay still. “Aya, can you get the lights?”

She nods, and while she does so, Miku heads over to the supply closet to get something.

The lights turn off, and only a soft light scattered by the sky lights up the room, just barely. When Miku comes back, she whispers to you, “What was the chant again?”

You shrug. “I don’t know. Make something up.”

She gives you a fake shocked expression. “Whaat? I can’t do that. It won’t be authentic then. Eh, it’ll be fine, I guess.” She takes out a half-empty box of matches and hands a matchstick to Daisuke. “Here, it’s not a candle, but it’ll do.” He strikes it and lights a flame, holding it in front of him.”

It’s actually looking kind of ritualistic.

“I think I remember it,” you tell Miku, who gives you a nod. That’s her okay.

With the lights off, ever flicker of the matchstick flame seems to send Daisuke into another wave of anxiety.

“Repeat after me,” you say. He nods. Aya watches from afar.

You take a deep breath. You wonder, will it still work? You aren’t summoning a demon here.

Where the winds always howl
Where is he looking?
And the sun fails to reach
Who is he calling?
I beseech you, traveler of the sands
Aren’t you right here?
Grant us your favor
Or is that not enough?
And walk among us once more

What are you to do?

A pair of eyes, boring into your consciousness, watching from a moment’s distance, drawn inward, unlike the abstract blur from before. Unlike the curious ones that stand quietly.

You stare at the door, at it, only to find nothing.

Metal groans from the opposite direction, rattling that rises into a fervor that would drive you wild if you weren’t preoccupied. One tremendously loud slam arises when something crashes into the ground, and you’re torn away from door. The supply closet had fallen to the floor, and Miku shouts, “Begone, ghost! Vanish!” She reaches into the jar, grabs a handful of its contents, and scatters it forward, where the closet had fallen. Salt.

It scatters as a wind swirls through the room, a gust risen from where you were watching before. It sweeps by your feet to Daisuke, extinguishing the small fire.

Interventions: 2

And like that, it joins the haze beyond.

You can’t pay attention; you don’t notice as Miku scatters a handful of salt toward Daisuke, who flinches and lets out a yelp of terror.

“Go away, ghost! Leave him alone!” she says, sending more into the air.

Someone’s here.

You shake your head. Murmuring, you say, “I’m going crazy.” This room is cursed. Miku lifts Daisuke up. She asks if he’s okay, but the words are lost on you. All you can wonder is—

Who’s watching?

While Miku seats Daisuke and tries to stop him from having a heart attack, Aya walks past you. The salt crunches as she walks over the mess. When she reaches the fallen supply closet, she crouches down and looks at it. Then she turns to you.

She says, “Are you going to stand there with that stupid look on your face all day, or are you going to help me pick this up?”

You scoff. “Coming.” With a heave, the two of you manage to prop it back upright and push it into the wall. You pat your hands and notice Aya’s looking at the closet rather intently. “Turns out ghosts exists. What do you know?” It didn’t come from there, but—

“Hush,” she quietly says, her hands running over the sides of the door. Her fingers stop, as if caught on something, and then she gently tugs. Just barely, the daylight causes something to glimmer. “Fishing wire. Clever. Was that your idea or hers?”

You look over your shoulder to check on the other two. In a low voice, you reply, “It wasn’t mine.” Did she and Hinami switch charms, or are you actually discrediting Miku?

For the first time ever, you see Aya smirk at something besides you. “I won’t say anything. I’ll find you at lunch tomorrow for the investigation. Don’t run away.” She walks away to check on Daisuke, leaving you back to your thoughts.

You raise your hand and close it, as if to grasp something, but your fingers slip through.

Maybe it was just your imagination after all.

“Didya think it was a ghost?” Miku asks, grinning.

You sigh, making one last sweep with the broom in your hands. “You surprised me. Couldn’t have given me a warning?”

“But then I wouldn’t have been able to see your reaction,” she replies, “But you were kinda distracted. What were you looking at?”

“Thought I saw something. Guess not.” You put everything back into the supply closet. “But I have to hand it to you. That was a convincing trick.”

Tossing the almost empty jar of salt into the air, she says while catching, “Right? But, half of it was you; how did you blow out the matchstick?”

“Uh, that wasn’t me,” you answer, “It was a stray gust of wind.”

“Uh huh...” she accepts, suspicious. “Anyways, another job well done! The Occult Club is on a roll this month.” After a quick consideration, Miku asks, “Do you think I overdid it?”

“You did good,” you reassure, “Why? Are you having regrets about scaring the life out of him?”

“Eh, I mean, all I did was get him off our backs and onto something more... scientific, you know?” she replies. “Aya’s probably going to say ‘I told you it’s not a ghost’ or something.”

“Hate to say it, but I trust her judgement.” You’ve always had that sort of relationship with her, you suppose, save for that one time. You really wish she wasn’t the way she was.

“I mean, I do too,” she replies, “It’s just that... aargh! Why am I getting so worked up over this? Let’s get out of here already and get some soda, this room is creeping me out.”

She... always seem to be able to switch gears like that. Some things never change, you guess.

“Sounds good,” you say, leaving after her. You give the room one last look before you turn the lights off and shut the door.

...

A day later, and you wish you ran away.

“Explain this to me again?” you say to Aya. In one hand she has a bag full of junk, and in the other she holds up a key.

She tells you, “I’m going to set up a trap in Daisuke’s locker. Miku’s idea gave me a genius idea; I’m going to set it up so that only he knows how to disarm it when he opens it.” Reaching inside her bag, she takes out a plastic bag filled with ink and a spool of string. “If you don’t pull the string when you open it, the ink will explode in your face. Easy mark. Everyone who passes by the criminal would easily remember a sight like that.”

You take everything back. You do not trust her judgement.

You ask, “What if Daisuke forgets and gets the ink all over himself?”

“Oops,” she blankly says, “Then he ruined the trap, and we’ll have to start over. But it’s okay, I trust him to not mess up. Just keep watch, okay?”

Shaking your head, you lean back against some other lockers, watching reluctantly. Aya unlocks the locker with Daisuke’s key, and when she swings open the door, she finds an envelope inside. She reaches out for it, but you rush in and grab it before she can.

“Whoa! What’s this?” you say, raising it into the light. You can’t make out anything inside except a folded letter. A heart sticker holds the envelope close. “A love letter?”

Aya gives you annoyed look, “Why did you take it out of my hands?”

“I don’t like that look on your face,” you joke, “You were going to open it, aren’t you?”

Aya rolls her eyes and answers, “We have to see who it’s from. It could be the culprit.”

“Or, it could be completely unrelated, and we should give it to Daisuke first.”

“Oh shut up, you want to read it too,” she replies, annoyed.

We have to see what's in there, it's non-negotiable... f-for totally investigative purposes of course! So we might as well have Aya do it for us and not suffer the consequences. Hell we can even take a pic and blackmail her later on

Staring at the envelope, you reconsider your options.

Well...

If it’s going to be opened, it might as well be her. Just like that, you hand it over to her and all of her smugness.

Carefully, she peels back the sticker without ripping it, opens it, and takes out the letter. Her eyes quickly move from line to line, her face even getting a little redder.

She murmurs, “Wow, that’s some flowery language.” Suddenly, she clears her throat and folds it back up. “Good news! False alarm.”

“What, not going to let me read it?”

“What? No, why would I? You can’t just read someone else’s personal letters like that,” she replies.

“How do you know it’s a false alarm?”

She smiles, “I asked him who he was with. The person in question was with the same group of friends the entire day.”

You say, “Or... maybe you’re hiding something?”

“Or maybe you wanted to see what a love letter is like since you’ve never received one?”

“But you have?” you fire back.

“...Oh, shut up,” she replies, turning around and stuffing the letter back into the locker. Without another word, she starts taking things out of the bag and starts to set up... whatever it is she’s setting up.

You can’t help but have doubts.
>Stop her.

“So why am I here again?” you ask.

“Are you saying lookout duty isn’t important? What if the criminal walks in right now and I didn’t notice? The whole thing would be ruined,” she says.

You cross your arms. “Anyone could’ve done this.”

“You have special, magical eyes. You were born for this job, trust me—“ In the middle of her sentence, you reach past her shoulders and take the letter. She tries to grab your wrist but she’s too slow.

You wave the letter tauntingly. “I’m going to open it up.”

She rolls her eyes and goes back to the trap. “You’re so childish.”

“I’m not the one playing keep away,” you reply. Your fingers go around the sticker, about to pull it free. “I’m gonna open it. Aren’t you going to stop me?”

“Ryuuta, I swear to—!” Something audibly rips, and Aya recoils as ink explodes outwards at her. She groans and tilts her head back as you notice what happened. A good amount of it covers her chest and the lower half of her face, and her hands are dripping. She doesn’t say anything as she stands there with a dead look on her face. Miraculously, none of it got into Daisuke’s locker.

You rub the back of your neck. That may or may not have been your fault. You probably shouldn’t have distracted her. “Uh, my bad.”

“I’m going to kill you.”

“I, uh, I’m going to get some paper towels,” you tell her. You try to walk away, but she grabs your wrist. The ink starts to drip down your forearm to your elbow.

Uh oh.

You say, “Sorry! I didn’t mean to—“

“Sorry won’t get these stains out of my sweater!” she replies. She’s holding some kind of death grip on your wrist, and when you try to pull away, she holds you right in place. “Why do you care about that stupid letter so much?” she says, reaching for you with her other hand.

You quickly drop the love letter onto the ground away and grab her wrist before she can get ink all over you. “Aya, calm down for a second!”

“Let go of me!” she says, trying to twist free.

“Why don’t you let go first?!” you reply. You struggle, and she takes a step back, her shoulder hitting and sliding along a wall of lockers.

“Are you stupid? I’m going to get you back for this—“ Aya slips on the ink, her foot sliding and her balance shifting. She falls backwards, and you freeze up in surprise as she pulls you along with her. Crashing into the ground, you fall with her, your good hand releasing her and trying to brace yourself from slamming the ground with your face. Except your hand falls on a puddle of ink and it slides, causing you to collapse right on her side.

Aya, noticing her arm’s free, pushes you away and pins both your wrists above your head and down onto the ground. The back of your blazer soaks up the scattered puddles underneath you, a sickening, cold wetness spreading. You look at her, annoyed, and she stares at you back, heavily breathing.

The two of you stay like this for a moment, unmoving.

“Are you happy?” you ask, breaking the silence.

She shakes her head. “God, I hate you.”

Thanks for playing! Hope it was fun. This quest takes place where the school year starts in spring, and it's about time for summer vacation. Don't get your hopes though.

As always, comments, criticism, and questions are very welcome.

A fun time. Even if I missed most of it, its still a fun read and a good, cozy time.

Prez accepted our meager offering. We figured out how to channel the eldritch powers without the help of the only one who truly believes, Hanako. And we got into fun, awkward situations with Aya.

Thanks for running, OP. Now if only we could get a picture of Aya pinning us to the ground.

Out of curiosity, why *did* you want the letter?
>>
>>2913856
Curiosity and the thought that the contents might be able to give us a hint or something later on despite seeming like a normal love letter
>>
>Burned an intervention to get thrown into an ink puddle.
You anons are such losers.
>>
>>2915139
It's called having fun. Way better than hoarding all of them till the end and having a bunch we never got to use
>>
>>2915221
Your definition of fun is befuddling.
>>
>>2915139
Idk, I kinda like how the intervention handling has been.
If it was just me, I would be hoarding all of these and/or using them in the most min-max ways possible to get the best possible outcome. Or not using them at all because "limited use items are too good to use" mentality.

The first one we used on finding out honey was the secret ingredient to making really good noodle broth. Its simple, nice things that both get more interaction out of characters, and I imagine, subtly nudge the story/character arcs in a certain direction.

I also find that the rate we get interactions for general things, see:
>You can gain Interventions through feats, crits, garnering attention, or special events.
Means we don't have to be super economic about it. We probably got that new intervention at the start of the thread for being mistaken for the pervert before, or becoming friends with time-traveling cyborgs.

Besides, spending small interventions on small things sits better with me. Makes things feel nice and cozy. If we started trying to use them on big things, like making sure our kohai passes her test, there are probably going to be some repercussions from the powers that be.

>>
>>2918345

>>
>>2918345
If I got smeared with ink in real life then I'd be pissed but this is fucking fiction. We're supposed to live vicariously through Ryuuta. He might not like interaction with Aya but all the anons here do. Learn to differentiate fiction and reality
>>
I can't believe this is something that's worth arguing over.
>>
>>2918345
A Pyrrhic victory is still victory.
