In the far future, biotechnology advances by leaps and bounds, creating stunning achievements in medical, civil, and military applications. Illness becomes a thing of the past, and genetic modification is as commonplace as cosmetic surgery.

However, like all great advances, unchecked progress and experimentation has led to abuse and corruption. Ultra powerful megacorporations that monopolized the latest biotech have risen to be the great powers of the age, waging secret wars of sabotage, espionage, and deceit to get ahead of each other.

In order to fuel their rampant growth, megacorps develop lethal diseases and viruses, horrific bio-organic abominations, and ever more exotic genetic modifications to both sell to the highest bidder and unleash upon each other.

The rampant proliferation of bioweapons, and the need to contain them, has given rise to a new profession, the BIOWEAPON HUNTER.

You are LEWIS, a Hunter specializing in hunting down biological threats with your T-Doll companion HK!

You had to admit, it was a bit odd being in the driver's seat in rendezvous situations like this. Before, it was always Hank taking the lead, and you were the one who had to ride shotgun. But things were different now. Hank was no longer around, or at least no longer in the field with you.

Your new partner, HK, was sitting in the passenger seat of your car, still as a statue as her eyes stared out the windshield. You were both already at the designated rendezvous point, inside an out of the way parking garage where hopefully nobody would see you. If everything went according to plan, you'd meet the client's courier here, escort him to the airport, and everything would be done.

Assuming everything went according to plan, of course.

"It's not efficient for both of us to be in the car." HK notes blankly, her eyes still staring out the windshield, scanning for any threats. "At the very least, I can be out in an overwatch position."

Well, HK did speak some sense. It would certainly increase your situational awareness. However, you did remember that Hank was traditionally against that sort of thing, as it could potentially hurt the trust between you and the client. After all, they were meeting complete strangers and likely already high strung. They wouldn't appreciate being treated like potential threats.

Well, according to Hank, at least. But he wasn't here right now. You realize for the first time that this was YOUR show now.

"We'll stay put for now." You instruct her. "No need to spook the courier. They might think you're trying to ambush them."

"Roger that." HK nods and returns to staring out the windshield.

Man, at least riding with Hank was a little more eventful. HK wasn't quite one for banter, evidently.

A few more minutes pass, and you see a black sedan with tinted windows pull into the garage. You frown. Whoever contracted this courier was a complete amateur. Nothing screamed "CORP VEHICLE" like car like this.

Assuming it WAS, the courier, of course.

"Receiving handshake transmission." HK informs you, her eyes flickering for a moment.

At that moment, your phone buzzes, asking to input a code. You type in the code provided by the client, and the screen flashes green.

The sedan then pulls forward and the window rolls down, revealing a man in dark glasses and a suit. Definitely a Corp agent. Not exactly subtle.

"Riding shotgun or separately?" He asks simply.

Riding with the courier meant you'd be able to protect the cargo more efficiently, but then you'd have to put your well being in the hands of someone you didn't even know. Riding separately was a safer bet for yourself, but there was the chance of you getting separated from the courier if things went wrong.

"HK, you ride up front. I'll police the cargo." You say.

"Don't touch it." The courier reminds you sternly.

"Yeah yeah, I know how it goes." You grunt as you slide into the back seat. You glance over into the other seat to see a rather nondescript looking box securely strapped in, massive biohazard signs stamped everywhere on it. So, the usual.

"Strap in, we're on the move." The courier announces as the sedan lurches forward.

Well, you had to admit, these corp issue cars were certainly smooth rides.

"Calculating most efficient route to the destination." HK says softly.

"What are you, a robot?" The courier grunts.

"She just takes her job seriously." You say quickly, cutting off HK before she can speak.

"Hmph. Pretty creepy if you ask me."

"If you got time to talk, you got time to keep your eyes on the road." You remind him.

"Local route or freeway?" HK asks.

Well, the freeway was fast and direct, but extremely exposed and constrained. If you went on there, you would have to commit on that path all the way.

Local roads were more flexible, but... difficult to predict.

You see HK perk up as she glances out the window.

"Contacts." She says sternly.

"Shit." You grunt as you glance out of the rear window.

Sure enough, right behind you, you could see three sedans moving in formation, not even trying to blend in with traffic. They were keeping their distance for now, though, and not making any moves.

Were they biding their time? Or were they waiting for backup? You simply didn't know.

"Course of action?" HK asks, flipping the safety on her rifle off.

"Fuck if I know, you're the guys in charge of protection." The courier responds.

You start off with a rifle grenade, launching at the closest car. The grenade streaks through the air before embedding itself right into the hood, exploding brilliantly and sending fire and pieces of care flying all over the freeway.

Well, you were on a timer now before the RCPD came barging in to ruin the fun.

Then you can hear the roar of HK's automatic rifle as the second sedan is riddle with bullets. It's of course armored, but the sheer volume of rounds impacting into into its front force the driver to peel off, inadvertently spinning out of control.

The third and final sedan backs off, dropping speed out of your effective range.

"Targets suppressed." HK says simply.

"Got another problem." The courier grunts. "Up ahead!"

You turn your head forward and see more black sedans arrayed in a makeshift roadblock, intended to pen you in.

"Another contact from behind." HK warns.

You turn back to see a large, armored truck barreling forward, knocking side cars too slow to get out of its way. What was noticeable was the large, reinforced steel trailer it was towing.

There was only one thing a truck that like could be carrying.

"Divert!" You yell. "Take an alternate route!"

"We already passed the last exit!" The courier yells back. "We'd have to turn around to reach it!"

Unfortunately, while HK had perfectly timed the angle and speed needed to clear the divider, what she couldn't possibly predict was the opposing traffic coming down the opposite end of the freeway. The moment the sedan clears the divider, it strikes another another car head on.

Everything goes white for a brief second.

When your vision returns, you can see HK, her rifle firing on full auto at pursuers just out of your range of vision. You wince as you crane your head over to see the cargo, still securely strapped into the other seat.

Your body explodes in pain as it aches all over, but fortunately, it doesn't seem as anything is broken or out of commission long term. Still, it hurts like hell to move. You focus your strength on crawling lean over to the driver's seat, where you check the courier.

He was breathing but... not really moving. You give him a light shake, but he wasn't waking up.

"Lewis, the enemy is closing in on our position." HK says as she reloads her rifle. "Recommendation secure the cargo and proceed to drop off point on foot."

"Y-yeah." You nod, as you regain your bearings.

HK doesn't even seem concerned about the courier as she reaches in and grabs the the package, securing it in one arm while casually firing her automatic rifle with the other.

"What about him?" You groggily point to the courier.

"The mission notes stated his status was expendable." HK says coldly as she ducks down to avoid a burst of gunfire. "Prioritization is your well being and the cargo."

"We're not leaving him behind." You say as you try to pull the unconscious courier out of the driver's seat."

"Your actions are inconsistent with mission directives." HK warns. "Command-level override is required."

"Consider this my damn override!" You scowl as you pull the courier out of the seat. You then take a good look outside, and you realize that your little crash had caused a massive pileup on the freeway, dozens of cars stuck and tangled together. There was no way you were commandeering a ride out of here.

"You cannot maintain acceptable combat efficiency while carrying either the courier or the cargo." HK notes as she fires a fresh round of suppressing fire. "Recommend you fall back foot while I delay the enemy."

Meanwhile, the armored truck had finally caught up, knocking aside stopped cars and crashing through the center divider.

While HK's desire to protect you was admirable, her superior physical strength would make her better suited to carrying both the courier and cargo to safety. But then you'd have to be the one to stay behind and delay the enemy...

You keep dragging the courier in one arm while hauling the cargo with the other as you slowly but surely weave your way through all of the stopped traffic. Up ahead, you could see an exit you could use to get to the airport and the dropoff point. It was only a handful of meters away...

And then you could the familiar whine of police sirens. RCPD always had a knack for arriving late to party, yet always at the worst possible moment. You weren't sure if you could make the exit carrying all this weight.

You set the courier down against one of the derelict cars in clear view as the police sirens get louder. You'll let the cops and lawyers sort him out, whoever he was. With just the package to worry about, you can move much faster. You reach the exit and move down the stairs...

...where you run right into HK.

"Whoa!" You yelp. Your biosensor didn't even pick up her presence! Or maybe you were just too distracted to notice. "How did you get here?"

"RCPD arrived and provided a suitable distraction to give me an opportunity to disengage." HK explains.

"Are you hurt?" You say as you briefly look over the android.

"I am built to high tolerances. I cannot be damaged easily." HK responds. "My systems are still running at peak efficiency."

"That's good to hear." You sigh in relief. "Come on, let's get this job done."

With HK escorting you, it's a simple matter to reach the dropoff point, a pickup truck just sitting in an innocuous airport parking lot. As per the instructions, you set the cargo down in the rear bed, and the truck takes off, making a beeline for one of the nearby hangars and disappearing from view.

"Mission accomplished." HK nods.

Your phone then pings with a message from the client. Job was done and payment was wired to to your company.

"Good job, kid. Looks like you got the job done AND caused hell of a mess!" Hank laughs over the phone. "So how's your little tin soldier been doing?"

You glance at HK, who was still scanning the the surrounding area cautiously.

"Yeah, we're heading back now." You say as you turn to HK. "Come on, let's go."

"Affirmative." HK nods as she follows your lead.

It's a simple matter to call a cab to ferry you back to the original rendezvous point. From there, you both grab your car and start driving back to the office.

However, on the way there, HK speaks up.

"Permission to issue a query?" HK asks.

"Go ahead." You nod.

"Why did you disregard the mission parameters and prioritize the courier's life above the cargo?" The T-Doll asks, focusing her blank stare at you.

"Well, well gotta be able to sleep at night, you know?" You shrug.

HK pauses, her expression still blank. You figured that she was trying to process what you were saying.

"My apologies, my pre-installed subroutines cannot seem to process that answer." HK concludes. "Please clarify."

"You know what a conscience is?" You sigh.

"Yes." HK nods. "Conscience is a cognitive process that elicits emotion and rational associations based on an individual's moral philosophy or value system-"

"Let's just say that I'm not comfortable with leaving another person to die." You tell her. "That's what my conscience tells me. Plus, it also sometimes earns some brownie points with the client."

"But we were only payed the contractual amount." HK points out. "There was no material difference caused by your actions."

"Not everything manifests in plain monetary fashion." You frown. "It's an emotional thing, you know? Clients appreciate you keeping their assets intact when possible, which encourages repeated business and the like."

"I think I understand." HK nods. "A pragmatic strategy to maintain positive relations with clients."

Well, she was half right.

And the conversation goes silent again.

And that's when you hear a police horn. You look at your rearview mirror and see a police car tailing you, lights flashing.

You had a feeling you knew who it was.

You speed up a little, keeping just ahead of the police car ever so slightly for several more minutes, leading Lucina on a merry low speed chase through the streets before you finally decide to confront her. You can't very well just keep playing cat and mouse with her after all.

"Keep cool, HK. Let me do the talking." You caution her as you pull your car to the side and slow down.

The police cruiser comes to a stop as well. And sure enough, you see a rather annoyed Lucina exit the driver's side. What catches you off guard, though, was that someone exits the passenger side as well. That was odd, Lucina typically didn't travel with a partner.

It was another girl, wearing dark jacket over a police vest and having dull pink hair.

Who the hell was she...?

HK immediately perks up at the sight of the new girl.

"That girl with the pink hair is a T-Doll." HK announces. "Handshake protocols identify her as ST-AR."

Huh, so it looks like the T-Dolls you didn't pick went off to other owners. Lucina apparently got possession of one of them.

Lucina was approaching closer now. Despite looking annoyed, she didn't have her weapon drawn and otherwise didn't look like she was on edge, through her sidearm was quite visibly displayed in her side holster. A constant reminder of her authority.

You decide it was best to play this straight. You didn't want to risk making Lucina even more upset.

"Sooo... did something happen, officer?" You ask casually as you roll the window down.

"I'm not even going to bother asking if you were at the airport earlier today." Lucina grunts. "Aren't you hunters supposed to be discreet?"

"Hey, this job ain't easy." You shrug. "Not that I'm admitting I was there or anything."

"Of course." Lucina sighs and leans down. "Where's Hank?"

"Retired." You respond.

"Oh... I'm sorry, I didn't know." Lucina blinks.

"Not like it was his choice." You shrug.

"Though I see you got a new partner rather fast." Lucina notes, narrowing her eyes at HK.

"I could say the same to you." You retort.

Meanwhile, HK and ST-AR seemed to be trying to stare each other down. HK was looking at the other T-Doll rather curiously, while ST-AR seemed to be giving a different look back. It was something like... disdain or pity? You weren't quite sure with an artificial being like a T-Doll.

"So, you pick her yourself? Or was it something Corporate foisted on to you?" You ask casually, nodding to ST-AR.

"Star was provided to the RCPD on a provisional basis." Lucina huffs. "It was a Department decision, not Umbrella's."

Huh, guess she's already nicknamed her T-Doll. Not exactly original, but definitely flowed off the tongue much more easily.

"Sure, you keep telling yourself that." You wink.

"Is he being a problem, Captain?" ST-AR asks.

"Calm down, Star, he's just always an asshole." Lucina shakes her head.

"You are currently being the problem right now." HK says simply.

"Huh, is that so?" ST-AR raises an eyebrow. "What are you going to do about it?"

Neither of the T-Dolls make any obvious moves, but you can tell they were probably sizing each other up in their own ways.

"It's complicated." You grunt and try to deflect the conversation. "What about you and ST-AR? You two looked ready to trash each other."

"ST-AR is an inferior model, yet she was acting in a way that seemed like she could defeat me in a battle." HK explains. "It does not make sense. With my improvements over model line, chances of her prevailing over me are 0.24%. Why would she act in a way in a situation she know she couldn't win?"

That... was a bit complicated, too.

"You can't judge a machine purely by their specs." You instruct her. "Especially since you T-Dolls are intelligent and self learning. ST-AR's file mentioned she has lots of experience, so she might know a few tricks you don't."

"But-" HK protests, but you cut her off.

"Underestimating an enemy is a good way to lose to them." You caution. "I don't care what your odds tell you. As long as they're not zero, there's a chance."

"I-" HK pauses again, as if trying to parse what you told her. "I'm sorry. I'll try to keep what you said in mind."

"Yeah." You nod. Maybe you had to give her a more... practical lesson or something when you got back.

"So... in what is your relationship with Captain Lucina complicated?" HK asks.

Damn, she didn't forget after all. Freaking robots and their perfect recall.

"My mom didn't want us seeing each other anymore." You frown as you try to recall what exactly the situation was. "I don't really remember why, or if she even gave a reason at all."

"So you were separated?" HK blinks.

"Yeah." You nod. "I didn't see Lucina or Nemo for years. Wasn't until I moved out and came to Raccoon City that I happened to run into them again."

"Quite the coincidence." HK points out. "Considering the size of the continental United States alone..."

"You don't have to tell me the odds to that." You shrug. "Things just sort of worked out that way."

At this point, you've already gotten back to the office, which you were glad for. This whole conversation was starting to hit a bit too close to home. Not to mention, your body was still aching all over.

You head straight to the main office level, where the Boss and Hank were already waiting for you. G is also there, a serving tray in hand as she hands you a cold water bottle.

"Uh, thanks." You say to the T-Doll maid.

"Cause a real scene, as always." Hank chuckles. "Saw the whole damn thing on the news!"

"Not exactly the smoothest operation." The Boss sighs.

Sure enough, on the main screen, you could see a shot from a news helicopter, surveying the carnage on the freeway. Cars were still being cleared out as police combed the area. However, it seemed the media were playing it down as a freak accident, rather than another Corp shadow skirmish.

"So, what exactly happened?" The Boss asks, arms crossed.

"Some other guys started shit with us." You explain simply. "They were tailing us aggressively so we responded."

"I can support Lewis' story with my own combat telemetry." HK offers.

"No, no, I trust his word." The Boss sighs. "But still, to have another high profile incident like this so quick after the last one... the insurance guys are getting nervous."

"Maybe we should start taking lower profile jobs?" Hank wonders.

"Lucina did warn me that we should avoid taking jobs inside the city proper for the time being." You add.

"That's what I was thinking, too." The Boss nods. "Anyways, good job out there. You've got the rest of the day off."

"Luck you." Hank grunts as the Boss returns to her office. "I'm still stuck with this mountain of paperwork."

"HK's my partner, so it's gotta be me." You say.

"Well, this I gotta watch, then." Hank beams as he gets up from his seat. "Hey G, grab me a cold one!'

Suddenly, a chilled beer can comes flying out from out of your view and Hank catches it and cracks it open.

"You seem to be getting used to having her around." You say, nodding to G.

"Yeah, well, I figured if I can't get rid of her, I might as well get some use out of this damn arrangement." Hank shrugs before taking a deep sip from the can.

"So what exactly does this welcoming party entail?" HK asks innocently.

"You're gonna have to beat me in a sim battle." You tell her.

"But the odds of a human, even a biomodded one, prevailing against me are-"

"Just hold back the odds for now." You grunt.

"We'll use guns for this exercise." You say. "That way we'll both have somewhat equal footing."

"Understood." HK nods.

"All right, kids, let's head down to the Pit, then." Hank says as he casually shuffles past the both of you towards the elevator.

G gives a little curtsy as you all leave and take the elevator down to the sublevels of the building, where the training facility was located.

"This building is quite extensive." HK notes.

"Yeah, the Boss has quite a lot of surprises up her sleeve." Hank nods. "Scuttlebutt has it that she actually owns an entire empire of PMCs, and she just personally runs this one as a hobby."

"Wouldn't be surprised." You chuckle.

Finally, the elevator comes to a halt and the doors slide open, revealing Nemo and your resident Biological Disposal Expert, Artya, still clad in her biohazard protection suit. Though, to be fair, you couldn't remember a time where she WASN'T walking around in it.

"The Boss told us you were planning on putting HK through her paces." Nemo says. "I'm just here to record the data for THI."

Artya just shrugs and scribbles on the whiteboard she always carried around with her.

I WAS JUST BORED.

She then wipes the words off and angrily scribbles a new sentence.

YOU GUYS DON'T BRING IN ANYTHING INTERESTING ANYMORE.

"Sorry Artya, I'll be sure to bring back a souvenir, I promise." You laugh.

"What are the rules of engagement?" HK asks politely.

"Rules are simple. There are no rules." Hank grins as he tosses a sim rifle to you and HK. "The only rule is whoever shoots or disables the other first wins."

"Understood." HK nods.

Hank then winks at you. A sign that he's already made all the "preparations" for you.

Well, no sense in pulling punches. You nod back at Hank. If HK couldn't deal with an unexpected situation like this, then she simply wouldn't be able to cut it as a Hunter.

"All right kids, get to your ready positions." Hank says. "HK, you'll start in that white square there. Lewis, you head to the other side."

"Understood." HK affirms.

"Roger that." You say as you head for the opposite side of the training ground. In between, it was a veritable maze of rooms, corridors, and floors. A simulated interior environment where it was the most likely and most dangerous terrain to encounter BOWs.

However, as you head to your own ready area, you find a head mounted HUD unit waiting for you. What Hank had never told you when you first took this test was that he had full access to a hidden surveillance system built into the training ground, meaning he had perfect situational awareness of the area. And since all the sensors were hard wired, they were extremely difficult to detect by remote means, meaning HK would be left in the dark to their existence.

Now, it was time to see how she would do when dealt a bad hand.
