When the Chinese invaded two hundred years ago the people of O'ahu turned to vault 67 for refuge. Inside they were forced to become slaves to the inventor of Cram, William Hormel. They were given two options, fend for themselves outside or consent to serfdom in the safety of the vault; they chose a third option and mobbed the Hormel family with any makeshift weapon they could find. The Hormel family, initially unsure about their position in the vault, were forced to fight for their lives under the guidance of their crazed patriarch. They came out on top and the vault was under the full control of King William the First. The line of succession dropped from one king to the next until it fell at your feet, then it was stolen by your younger cousin citing the line in the king's code that forbade giving kinghood to:

Discuss with the other players what kind of character we actually want, otherwise the specials are going to be all over the place and I won't be able to decide. Now for some background. I started my first quest with this same name around last year. We got to 3 threads when it started to burn out and my players left (Not blaming them, it got boring and that's one of my big problems with my writing). I remember when writing updates was the highlight of my day. I haven't had that much fun QMing since and I wanted to relive it again. Thanks for playing.

>Anyone who has been documented showing mercy to a serf
Seeing as how our family is collectively a bunch of dicks, having laws encouraging or defending such behavior would make sense. Would also set us apart from our family, and set up an early, close enemy to surmount in this grimdark world.

You couldn't believe it, your knaving cousin John actually did it. You're gonna get him back, that bastard. But how? He covered his ass perfectly, you can't challenge sitting king to a duel. Not that you would win if you could challenge him. You rubbed the scar he gave when he ran you through, recalling the look on his face when he thought he killed you. The lights in your quarters dimmed and the static speaker croaked out.
"Ahttention, in one our the pre coro-nation cerem-ony will beg-in. Dismiss the surfs early, we will need ev-ery noble that can to attend."
That was the voice of John's dumb inbred sidekick Zee. Some say that his line kept it in the family since before they even entered the vault. They were probably rehearsing it all afternoon for him to say it that well. John really is playing the part, it isn't 'kingly' to address the subjects directly and he apparently wanted to keep whatever he was planning secret otherwise he would have ordered someone else to do it. The lights finally flickered back on, the generator would be something John will have to address, the power grid is at it's limit and it can only get worse. You're divided, you don't want to give him the pleasure of showing up to his dumb party but not showing up might seem like a admission of defeat.

When you are sure everyone is at the party you leave for the throne room. You never knew your father, other than that he was a private man who was king from a very young age. The room was to be kept just the way it was when the king died but you stopped caring for tradition when it stole your birthright. You opened the door, and inside you could see the mark of a neat and sober man. The papers and files were stacked to perfection and everything was cleaner than the messbot could dream of. You sat in the seat that was to be yours and looked through the computer.
>For William
That was your name.
>On this computer you will find all the materials you need to be King. Though there are no materials here on how to be a man, you could start by giving up those childhood rivalries of yours. My only regret is that I couldn't be a father to you. What regrets will you keep to your old age?

57.6 [Failure]
You plug your pip boy in and begin the download. After it made the beep indicating it finished you turned off the computer and lowered the room's power settings. Robco's computer terminals came with a significant flaw, their unending need for power. If there wasn't enough juice, data can't be retrieved and everything is corrupted. When you turned the terminal back on random numbers, letters, and symbols replaced what once was a detailed script for the use of the King. You smiled, satisfied. It was the perfect crime, "The old man forgot to turn the power up," you could already hear them saying. You noticed your pipboy was flashing green and looked down.
>Download Incomplete
Incomplete.
"No, no no," you said aloud.
The last words your father wrote for you were gone, lost in the encrypted oblivion, never to be read by anyone but their writer. You were livid, you were going to get John, whatever the consequences. You wouldn't be in this situation if it weren't for him. You could kill him, it wasn't the first time you thought about doing it. You could ruin his symbolic victory over you by forcing him to spend the a week in the infirmary. Even humiliating him in some way would do the trick. The actual coronation is about to take place, what will you do?

The problem with needing so much power is bad things happen if it stops flowing. We just so happen to be granted some passwords due to our status of the King to be. So let's give him a very nasty surprise.

Access the power supply system and cut power to the serfs and royal chambers. Redirect all power to the noble quarters and key infastructure. Include a password to the local security systems and loyal soldiers declaring an insurrection procedure. Include the necessary royal family passwords.

Suddenly it will look like the serfs AND nobles are rebelling. Unlock the armories close to the serf quarters and noble quarters. Meanwhile the loyal soldiers of the royal family will act against the nobles and serfs. Sparking a rebellion for realsies.

We meanwhile will take advantage of the excess power in the critical systems to access we damn well ever want and even open the Vault door to leave. Or you know point out the cousin in such incompantent idiot that we should be charge.

Honestly if we don't have the passwords redirecting the power supply and sending an alert to the Security will still do the trick.

I feel bum out, that we lost all our father's data, with that 57.6 average. Since I know personal having something for a parent after they passed. I would consider that a success In my own quest..
>>
>>2880931
It was because our Science skill was 30 and we rolled over. How about this, the data is there in our pipboy, just incomplete and encrypted. If we could unencrypt what we have we could salvage some of the information. Give me a d100 roll, and I won't do the roll under or averages.

You leave the throne room without a trace and head to the room where the coronation was being held. Inside you can see that everyone was previously having a good time. You couldn't blame them, the vault had no real holidays and this was one of the better times to do it. But weren't they supposed to be mourning the death of your father, their king?
One of your aunts noticed you and went to speak with you, "William you're finally here, I'm to remind you to be in the high duke's circle when it happens."
That's right, you've been demoted. You looked over to the loose held high duke's circle, it was composed of older men talking among themselves while freely filling their cups with the ceremonial wine. In the hierarchy they were directly below the king, presiding over the various workstations and the guards assigned to them. You joined them and they barely seemed to notice you.

"Why is everyone drinking so much of the ceremonial wine?"
"Oh, John told us to finish the last of the alcohol supplies today. He says he will get more, whatever that means."
You were about to ask him to elaborate more when John entered the room. In the ceremony the High Dukes were to put the crown on the new king's head, to signify that all power the king had came from his Dukes. He wore the heavy metal crown gracefully for a time, until his head slowly started to sag and he held it in his hands instead. The ceremony went by quickly, the only commotion was his crying mother. He went to her first, then joined the High Duke's circle. All conversation between the Dukes stopped and they stood in silence until James broke the silence,
"How are we going to get more alcohol, my king."
"We're going outside to get it of course."
The dukes were shocked, and they all had the same question,
"What about the code?"
"The code is outdated. In two hundred years a lot can change, I want to see how much has changed. We have a goal now, to replenish the alcohol stocks. While we are outside looking, we will surely find a place for a suitable colony... I'm hoping that many experienced Dukes will sign up for the expedition. But anyone who joins will be awarded with a fief, on the outside."
John brought out a paper and most of the Dukes signed their names eagerly. Will you sign it?

You went up to put your name on the paper. John was evidently surprised you were doing so, but after the name was written he looked at it intently on the page.
"John."
He jumped as if interrupted from a dream.
"Yes?"
"I believe my skills can best be put to use by overseeing supply."
"That... won't be necessary. Every man will take what he needs on him. Take care of your own supply."
With that you left the event. During the next three days John filled the spots of the Dukes on the expedition with his close friends, usually that would warrant outrage but the old Dukes only thought of it as moving their duchies outside. The expedition elicited great excitement from the family, but of course old pre-war stories of the Chinese invaders began to resurface, causing some worry about what is out there. You had some time to read what your father wrote for you. You read,

>It was widely known before the war that the Hawaiian Archipelago could not reliably use nuclear power due to problems with transportation and waste disposal. Nuclear powered appliances and vehicles can only be found near old military installations. Before the war, Pearl Harbor was the headquarters of the United States Pacific Fleet and from what we know a large scale naval battle was had there. It is not known which side won the battle but it is known that Chinese marines took Honolulu. Poseidon energy was a large pre-war corporation based on making electricity. Their oil rigs and power plants can be found all across the Pacific. Before the war, Plasma and Laser weapons were the main weapons of the U.S army. Their only faults is that they use energy and ionized gas for ammunition. The former will be hard to obtain and the latter nearly impossible. The Mars shot program was done in secret by the United States Space Administration until 2076 when it was made public. Though it was unknown where exactly the facility was, rumors surfaced that it was somewhere near the Hawaiian archipelago.

Today was the day. You along with 15 other expeditionaries were fitting radiation masks. You couldn't say you weren't exited for the prospects of being one of the first ones to leave but thinking of whatever John's grander goals are made you shudder. Obviously his plan was falling into place and you were falling with it.
The entire family gathered outside the vault door. They watched as you stepped through the radiation threshold and watched John type in the codes. The rusted vault door slid out with a deafening screech and rolled over to reveal a blinding light like you've never seen before. When your eyes recovered you stepped out. The vault entrance was situated halfway up a mountain. Looking down, there seemed to be wreckage of a town the map called Mililani. The 16 expeditionaries were divided into

The expedition was divided into four groups of four, yours opted to explore the houses in the town. Between your group and the town was a thick jungle that you had to fight to get through. The town itself was not much better, nature reclaimed nearly everything except for collapsed houses and patches of road. Some houses were accessible because they were leaning on trees. You entered one of the non-collapsed homes.

Well that's extremely fortunate. Thoughts on doing this straight and grabbing a fiefdom directly near the vault?

We could work on allying ourselves with the other border-lord and building ourselves up until we are self-sufficient. It'd be simple enough after that to lay siege to the vault until our claim on the throne is recognized.

Going back early is probably not a great idea. He sent people out there that he didn't want in the vault so that he could take it over. If we show back up he'll probably have us killed or not let us back in and tell everyone that we never returned. If we want back in we'll probably have to force our way.

You search the house for anything worth taking. In the kitchen vine-covered cabinets had fallen onto the floor and revealed their rotten contents. The metal box under them was of more interest. You cleared off all the debris from it until its handle was visible. Without thinking you opened it, releasing a foul smelling vapor that filled your mask. You ripped it off to breathe fresh air. Out of the box crawled a massive centipede, snapping it's pincers. You dropped your weapon and it's coming towards you. What will you do?

What the fuck happens OP? I thought you decided to go with best of 3 rather than average.
>>
>>2893947
I thought it was average of the three best rolls? I’m sorry if I misremembered but this is a low level enemy. I went for it this way because I thought going from fail heavy beginning to a success heavy end would be satisfying, rather than rare failures the whole way through.
>>

>Three best rolls
That depends if there is more than 3 people in the thread going to roll. If that's the case of you picking the best rolls people will just keep rolling for a lower number
>>
>>2894183
I thought it was common to just roll once. That’s why people change IPs so they can get more than one vote or roll. If the player count gets that low I would let them roll more than once.

I will take the best rolls out of three (or of what is there) and get the average. If the average is below the requirement it succeeds. Vice versa
You radio your squad to see if they were all right.
>[William] Is everyone all right? What's going on?
>[Carl] I just found the motherload of liquor cabinets. At this rate we'll stock up in notime.
Cousin Carl was a happy go lucky kind of person. You supposed his motivations for signing up for the expedition was because he genuinely wanted to help the family.
>[Mathis] I haven't found anything yet. These bugs are killing me, who the hell said there were no gaps in the armor?
Mathis was a distant uncle of yours. He was a minor guard captain before the expedition. Like most of the others he wanted a piece of the pie.
>[Sesar] Nothing but rubble out here.
You didn't know Sesar's relation to you. He did his work assignments well enough, but outside of that he kept to himself.

You enter one of the standing houses. This one leaned so much that you had to practically enter it sideways. Your curiosity peaked as soon as you entered, an almost human figure was curled up in the corner of the room, covered in vines and moss. As you observed it a floorboard below you snapped and to your surprise it began gargling out sound and got up.

You examine the thing you just killed, it was anatomically human and from what you could tell it was extremely old. Its eyes were completely dilated even in death. Some extremities, like its fingers and feet were black and decaying. Some were completely gone, like the nose and ears. Some of its bones were visibly broken, it was surprising that it could move so well. Its hands were black and hardened, it's fingers were sharp. The body in general was hard due to what you assume was living in the elements for this long. What it was and how it came to be you couldn't determine. You radioed a description of the thing so everyone else would know if they saw something like it.
You radioed your squad to move in on the school. You met up with them where the old school buildings were visible through the thick jungle. From what you can see everything looks mostly intact. What will you explore first?

You motion for everyone to enter the building marked Administration. Inside it was evident that there was some kind of struggle. Blood and bullet casings were scattered across the carpeted floor. A line of desks had been set up by the door but it was moved somehow, allowing anything to come in. The door you entered was wrought with bullet holes. Further investigation was interrupted when you heard a gurgling groan coming from around you. Zombies like the one you just killed were getting up.

At the time of writing I haven't slept in exactly two days and I can't start now. I suppose getting my thoughts in order would help. I saw it first on the television that they bombed New York to the ground. At that point everyone could hear the explosions all the way from Pearl Harbor. We blessed the U.S navy and went down to the basement. Everyone stayed quiet, just listening to the faraway explosions until we heard a voice from a megaphone saying something like "Evacuate to Vault 67 or Vault 113 We are sheltering everyone!"
We knew 67 was right here in Mililani and 113 was all the way in Honolulu so the former was not an option.

>>
>>2905455
I wouldn't skip the side story; I just think it halts the flow of the story to jump off of the main storyline so abruptly for it over multiple QM posts.
I'm personally on pacific standard time (UTC-8) but the time I'm watching varies pretty wildly due to work.
