“I need the favor you promised,” Nemuri says, entering the clubroom. You pull your head out of the monthly Suion magazine to see her looking at you.

“Already?” you ask, surprised.

She pulls something out of her bag—a sheet of paper with a score written on top: a two out of a hundred, dated to near the start of the school year. “There’s another math test coming up. Help me pass.” That sounded more like an order than anything.

You do a double take. “A two? How the—?”

“I may have accidentally fell asleep, but that’s not the point,” she says.

“Well, I did say I’d help you,” you reply, “But I can’t promise anything. Are you sure you shouldn’t ask Hinami instead?”

“It’s okay, because it’s senpai.”

You close the magazine, giving her a questioning stare. “Hinami’s a third year, you know.”

“I know,” she replies, “Do you really not want to be my tutor? Am I that bad?” She finishes that with a small coy smile, as if she already knew your answer.

“Hey, I didn’t say that—“

Bursting into the room, Miku interrupts, “What are we going to do? We only have five days left!”

Nemuri, turning to her, says, “My test is in two days.” She holds her test as if she was presenting it.

Before she can even explain, Miku balks. “Eh? Is that yours? Did the teacher forget a digit?” Hinami arrives just in time, peeking to see what’s happening.

You wonder what to do.

You greet the two as they come in, wondering as to what to do. This has higher priority, you suppose.

“Alright,” you say, “Let’s save your grades. I can’t believe you’d wait until so late to even bother studying.”

“It’s so boring, though,” Nemuri replies, “Maybe we can do something else?”

“Then why are you asking me for help?! What, did you want me to make you a cheat sheet or something?”

Happily, she says, “You can do that? Thanks, that’d be great.”

“When did I say that? Come on, actually put in a little effort.”

Hinami adds in, “Midterms are coming up. I think we can study for today; it wouldn’t hurt.”

Speaking up, Miku says, “Let’s go visit that shrine after! If we can pray hard enough, maybe some divine intervention will give us 100’s.”

Nemuri, accepting her fate of actual work, drops her bag down and takes out her things. The other two start taking out their notebooks and start going through their notes.

When she gives you her homework to show you, you flip through them and find that you’re getting a headache. The answers are nonsensical, often accompanied by a weird doodle on the margins of the page. Some of these it’s clear she gave up before she finished reading the question.

You ask, “Have you actually tried... trying?”

“I gave it my 100%,” she replies.

Doing well in school doesn't really matter that much. If she has something else she can turn into a future then it's fine. Even if she doesn't, it's not worth trying if you don't care about it. It's better to find a reason to care about it first.
>>
You can’t tell if she’s serious or not.

“Then maybe you need to give it your 1000%.”

“That’s mathematically impossible,” she replies, “Did I ever tell you this? I hate that saying the most. If you could give it 120%, that wouldn’t be 120%, now would it? It’s the kind of sophistry that only idiots say.” When she sees your annoyed expression, she adds, “But, I’ll try.”

“Is this last week’s homework?” you ask, unwilling to comment on what she just said. The paper in front of you, you notice is half-finished. “Why don’t we start here?”

Going through the first problem, you occasionally glance at her to see if she’s following along, asking her a question here and there to make sure. She answers all of them with nods and yeses, despite watching you more than what you’re writing. You’ll buy it for now, but—

“And that’s the first question. The second one is the same concept,” you tell her, “You should be able to do it.”

Taking the pen from you, she starts writing, barely stopping until a certain point where she hesitates, only for a moment. Her final answer, you spot, is correct. “How’s that?”

You want to frown. “If you knew how to do it, then why didn’t you finish it?”

“I only got it when you did,” she answers, her expression betraying nothing. What a liar. “How about this one?” From one problem to another, you and Nemuri spend the next thirty minutes poring over mind-numbingly boring math problems. Except, you found a bit of entertainment in trying to figure out whether or not she really knew something or not.

A loud sigh takes your attention away, one that came from Miku. She’s collapsed over her books, complaining. “I’m bored. Hinami, let’s do something else. What was that thing you talked about last month? The sign thing?”

“Sigils?” Hinami asks, lifted her head out of her studies. “Oh, that is fitting!”

Though you don’t ask, your ears perk to listen in. Miku says, “Yeah, that! Let’s make some charms.”

“I think we have some materials lying around,” she replies, excited. Getting up, she goes over to a cabinet to start searching.

Nemuri, seeing you distracted, ask, “Time to take a break?”

You feel as if something’s reversed.

“Sure, why not. You’d better not go right back to giving it 100% afterwards,” you tell her.

“Hmm,” she replies, “But you know, 1000% of 2 is 20, which is still failing.”

“We better add another zero to that, then,” you reply, and she smirks. Heading over to Miku and Hinami, you ask, “What are you two up to?”

Miku says, “We’re making charms with sigils, I think, to help us on the midterms. Hinami knows what I’m talking about.”

And as Hinami returns, she sighs. “They’re not going to make miracles happen obviously, so don’t rely on them too much.”

Nemuri counters, “Every little bit helps. Let me join in too.”

“There’s enough for everyone,” she replies, unloading a handful of things onto the table. “I think coming up with sigils would take too long, so why don’t we use planetary ones instead since I know them?”

“I have no idea what any of that means but sounds great,” you say.

“I’m not a blacksmith so this’ll have to do,” she says with air-dry clay in one hand and a carving utensil in the other, she explains, “There’s all sorts of things to choose from. What do you prefer? Protection, intelligence, wisdom, luck, fortitude, or maybe something else?”

Miku instantly asks, “Can I choose them all?”

She stifles a laugh, “No, don’t be greedy.”

Nemuri answers, “Wait, if you’re lucky enough, you can ace an exam by guessing through it. Kind of like that thing with monkeys and typewriters.”

That’s the worst plan you’ve ever heard of.

“I’ll go with luck,” you say, “Not to guess on tests, obviously.” You thought about picking something else, but in the end, luck is one thing that trumps everything else, as unreliable as it is.

Miku says, “Protection for me. Can’t go wrong with that.” Her sentence trails off into inaudible words.

Nemuri, on the other hand, picks something else, “Fortitude.” You’re a little surprised, but you don’t say anything. She doesn’t elaborate either.

“Then,” Hinami says, “I’ll pick wisdom. I think it’ll come in handy a lot. Okay, let’s get started then!”

Quickly drawing a picture on sheets of paper that she hands everyone, she explains the sigils that correspond to whatever it the type of thing you wish for. They correspond with the planets and the days of the week, and yours, she tells you, is a little different than luck as there’s nothing that’s directly matching. However, there is something that’s close to it, yet she doesn’t explain what.

The Moon for Miku, Saturn for Nemuri, and Jupiter for Hinami.

Not knowing what is you’re drawing exactly, you try to carve it into the clay, messing up a line every now and then and trying to patch it back up in frustration.

You mumble, “Is this really going to work?” Ah, you picked the one that is almost the least measurable.

How would you ever know if the charm is good for anything?

And then, it’s done.

You set your work on the table, noticing how small it ended up being. Any larger would be annoying to have around, and right now, it kind of resembles a big coin. You wonder if it’s fragile.

Out of the corner of an eye, you see Miku talking to Hinami. The conversation that they’re having is barely audible.

Watching Hinami work, Miku exclaims, “Wow, those lines are so clean. How do you do that?”

“Just have a little more confidence. Ah, don’t point it toward you when you cut down, you’ll hurt yourself...”

Wait a minute, wasn’t this for the upcoming exams or something? What kind of test would you need “protection” or “fortitude” for? Well, whatever. No one seems to care or mind anyway.

You pick up your charm again and study it from different angles. You’d never seen or heard of anything like this before, but Hinami’s the expert here. Maybe it’s a regional thing. Guess you’d just have to believe, huh?

“Senpai,” Nemuri calls to you, circling around so you can see her without turning in your chair. “How does it look?”

You can’t make heads or tails of it. Then again, it’s not like you know how it’s supposed to look like. “Like you put in more work in that than in your test.”

She nods. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“Why fortitude?” you ask.

“So I don’t fall asleep on the test again,” she replies as if it were completely natural, as if she had the answer prepared already. “Everything else was all good, but this was smarter.”

“Really? I think coffee would help more than a charm.”

“Coffee only last for a moment. Charms are forever,” Nemuri replies. “I think. I don’t know about this, though.” She shows off the sigil she drew, and then she says, “Hey, what do you think? If I picked intelligence or wisdom, would that have really have done anything?”

“You’d never know. Maybe you missed out on the opportunity of a lifetime to be a genius.”

She laughs. “Maybe. But you didn’t pick it either.”

“That’s because luck beats everything else, like rock paper and scissors—“ you begin to say, stopping when you see the clock on the wall, “Oh, breaks over! Let’s get back to studying already. These problems aren’t going to solve themselves.”

Reluctant, Nemuri sighs as she offers no attempt at an argument.

“There’s a supermarket sale going on, I can’t miss it!” said Miku, right before she left.

“Sorry, I need to get home early. The shrine is a little too far away for me,” said Hinami, following right after.

So that’s why only you and Nemuri are left at the closest shrine to the school, the one that countless students make a pilgrimage to in order to not miserably fail their big exams.

It seems like overkill for Nemuri, but she seemed for it.

She walks by your side past the gate that loomed over. It’s quiet, and not too many people are here. Soft murmurs are all that you hear, laid on top countless footsteps over the stone path.

You stop when you spot the fountain. “We should purify ourselves first.”

Nemuri frowns. “You actually do that stuff? Come on, let’s just go.”

“Come on, you might as well do this properly.”

She pouts, and then follows you anyways. You rinse both hands, and Nemuri does the same; though when she’s done, she says, “I’m not rinsing my mouth.”

“I wasn’t planning to either,” you say, walking away. You feel like a little bit of a hypocrite, but at least it wasn’t nothing. Are they even watching? Do they even care?

Something catches your eye, and you point it out. “Oh look, they’re selling talismans and all that.”

“We already made charms, didn’t we?” Nemuri says, “Though I don’t think it’s as effective as these.”

“That’s not true. Didn’t Hinami say something like, it’s better if it’s homemade, or something?”

“I’m pretty sure those are handmade too,” she says, heading to where the offering box is, past the entrance where two statues of dogs stand guard.

The sky is clear, and the breeze is light. Too many things are happening lately; it’s a bit too busy for your tastes.

You find yourself tossing in a couple of coins and making a prayer.

You’ve been meddling in all sorts of things lately, and you’d rather not piss off some weird spirit.

Anything’s fine, really.

So please, if nothing could happen, that’d be perfect.

Finishing your last words, you look to find Nemuri waiting for you.

“Had a lot to wish for?” she asks.

“I guess you can say that,” you reply, “Nothing in particular, though.” Despite there being a zero percent chance that the world will end tomorrow, you can’t help but not look forward to it.

“Me too,” she replies, smiling.

A single drop of water falls on your head.

“But,” Nemuri adds quietly, “I think I’ll do it with my own hands.” She’s getting way too serious about this test. Or maybe it’s not that.

You don’t think about it too hard, because when you glance up to find the clouds above frantically moving into place as if they’d laughed at your thoughts. The rain picks up, now audible, and the two of you duck for cover.

What a pain.

Just caught up. Seems like a pretty cozy quest here, QM. Slice of life with actual eldritch stuff on the periphery.

I'm actually down to make a collection of little mini-grimores, to placate the Council. Like a hand manual, each with their own Subject focus. A "Locations of Luck" one for cataloging places like the Shrine, Noodle Shop, and the Dog Statue. With descriptions of where and what they are, and what kinds of blessings you can get from each one. Or a "Sigils and Runes" one for teaching people the basics of sigils/talismans, what different symbols do, and how to make one yourself.
It'd be easier and faster to pump out than an entire book, as well as letting us spread out content across multiple weeks, a new hand manual every week or two. Gives us something to show for our investigations as well as a long term contribution to the school.

Still trying to distinguish each of the girls a bit more, their hair ornaments help. They are all pretty likable in their own ways. Think I like Hanako and Aya the most so far.
>>
>>2856374
Actually this anon has the right idea. With Hiname's help we can do this no problem.

Also yeah, it's hard to distinguish the characters, maybe formatting the text with colours for each of them could help?

>it's hard to distinguish the characters, maybe formatting the text with colours for each of them could help?
Sorry about that. I've been kind of slacking when it comes to unique dialogue, but I'll try to make it clearer in the future. Though, I think I'll avoid color formatting if I can since I think it looks like the most garish thing.
>>
>>2858494
I'd say personality wise its not too bad, they are all pretty distinct, I feel. Its more the pictures that I have to take a moment to filter through. And naming is more my issue, as I have a hard time distinguishing some moon-names just because its a tad un-intuitive on the pronunciation in my head.

Though if you are confident in adding a touch of color to each picture, perhaps fill in each of the girls' hair ornaments with a light color to make it more noticeable at a glance? If you think it looks better monochrome, I won't argue, as I'll work it out either way.

I'd agree that colored text can be a tad garish typically.

“Someone stole your panties?!” Miku asks as she bursts through the door. “Hinami, are you okay?”

“N-no, that’s wrong! It was my gym uniform! And please, stop saying that so loudly!” she replies, trying to cover her dangerously red face. “I don’t want everyone to hear it...”

You look at the two who just entered the club room, putting down the hardened charm you were admiring. You have an idea for what to do about the Student Council President’s demands, but it looks like it’ll have to be put on the backburner for now. “What’s going on?”

Miku responds instantly. “Remember that incubus you summoned? It stole Hinami’s clothes! That sick pervert is running around loose!”

It takes you a second to process that. You raise a hand. “Okay, first of all, the summoning thing was a group effort. Second of all, what? We didn’t summon anything. And thirdly, how do you even know it’s the demon-incubus-whatever-you-want-to-call-it?”

She replies, “What else could it be? All the clues are making a neon sign pointing right to the culprit!” You are rendered speechless. No words can be made, as you’re busy finding yourself in awe at her reasoning. “No wait, what if it was a sick pervert who likes Hinami?”

Her reddened face isn’t lessening at all. She might just die from the blood pressure. “W-what?”

Miku, with a completely straight face, asks her, “Okay, who has a crush on you?” Or it could be a coincidence, but she seems to be on a roll. You can’t be bothered to stop her.

“No one! Why would... I-How on earth would I know?”

“So Hinami has a secret stalker!” Miku declares. There’s a brief pause as she recognizes something missing. “Wait, where’s Nemuri? We’re down one.”

You explain, “Said she was going to go home to study. Hinami, you told about the teacher about the pervert, right?”

Hinami answers the question by nodding. She mumbles, “I-I don’t think it’s a stalker. After all, who would...”

Furious, Miku says, “Gah! I can’t sit still knowing some sicko is in our school. We need to do something! What if he starts to get more daring?”

Maybe she should calm down. There’s absolutely nothing good that can come from this, especially since teachers know already. Obviously the school staff and security would be on the lookout for this pervert and they’d do a much better job, but...

She’s right! Kind of. You didn’t think of anyone who would be degenerate enough to pull such a stunt, but you can’t doubt what you’ve learned. It leaves you way too unnerved to be able to relax. Something must be done!

Or maybe you should calm down too.

“We should leave it to the school staff,” you say, “What are we going to do, capture the criminal?”

“Wow, that doesn’t sound like a bad idea,” Miku replies, completely serious.

“What? No! What if they’re crazy or something and have a weapon?”

Miku waves the thought away. “We have you! We can set up a trap and you can lure him to it. Easy.”

Baffled, you reply, “That’s a terrible idea. Let’s not do that. Let’s do anything but that.”

“Got any better ideas?” she asks, “I don’t see you coming up with anything.”

“Alright, let’s think of something then!” you reply, caught up in the heat of the moment. Meanwhile, Hinami is silent, too embarrassed to say anything. Seeing this, you stop and ask her, “Err, should we stop?”

“I, uh,” she stammers, “I don’t know. I do want my uniform back... though I don’t want to meet whoever took it.”

She can’t decide.

writing

For a moment, you consider asking about how to trap a demon. Partially to do something club related and partially to not actually go out for a manhunt—demonhunt?—and risk coming into contact with a psycho.

You suppose you can worry about any demon problems if you see any signs of it, but chances are, it probably won’t happen.

While you’re thinking, Miku goes over to Hinami. “Here, take this. It’s the charm we made yesterday. I picked protection, but I think you need it more than I do,” she says, offering it over.

Hinami takes a step back. “Miku, I can’t take this. You made it for yourself, right? I’m sure you can use it better than I can.”

“Take it! You’re not in any position to say no, you know?” she replies, pushing it into Hinami’s hands. “You can give it back once you don’t need it anymore. How’s that?”

With a soft smile, Hinami nods. “Thank you. I promise I’ll return it just as new.”

“Don’t worry about something like that,” Miku replies, laughing.

With a lull in the conversation, you almost wonder if they’re going to leave it like this. But knowing Miku, the plans to capture the criminal are probably seared into her brain.

You ask, “Do you guys still want to do something?”

And to that, Miku says, “Of course! Just making sure Hinami stays safe.” You didn’t think that she’d care for the charm at all, but you guess she’s not that way about everything. Or maybe she’s doing it for Hinami.

“Then, let’s investigate the scene of the crime. Maybe we can find some evidence there,” you say.

Hinami says, “I don’t believe there’s anything there, but I think won’t hurt to check.”

Miku thinks out loud. “Hmm, isn’t there a club using the gym right now?”

Your face is almost flattened by a volleyball shot at you at the speed of light, and you freeze in abstract terror, having almost met death right in the face.

“Haha, sorry about that,” one of the volleyball club members say, waving at you. “Can you toss back the ball?”

Miku, already on it, throws it back, and walks over to talk to their club president while you stand there shaken.

“Ah,” Hinami starts to say, “What are we going to do if we find the... pervert?”

“If it’s actually a demon, you’ll be the one telling us what to do,” you joke, “But I don’t know. Tackle them?”

Hinami fidgets. “T-that sounds dangerous.”

Before you can reply, Miku returns. “She says we can check the lockers! Except Ryuuta, he can’t. Girls only, okay?”

“Eh?” You frown. “Alright, I get it, but what am I supposed to do? Stand out here and wait?”

“I don’t know, investigate outside? The culprit had to escape somehow, right? How did he manage to sneak in and out without anyone noticing? It’s kind of amazing how someone could take something like that right after Hinami changed, right?”

“I feel like there are a lot of assumptions being made but I’m going to go along with it. I’ll check what’s outside, then,” you say.

Miku, nodding, urges Hinami. “Come on, let’s go find some clues!”

You watch the two of them as they enter the lockers, and you start to head outside.

What Miku said is really getting to you.

How could such a crime be committed?

Maybe some other girl accidentally took her clothes and this whole thing is a benign misunderstanding.

We don't want to embarrass hinami too much though so ideally we'd avoid talking directly about her somehow.

This is an impossible situation, isn’t it? Maybe it’s some kind of misunderstanding.

You could ask around. Though you don’t spot a janitor around, you know a better idea.

The physical education teacher is found after a brief search, locating him in a small office room adjacent to the gym. He pulls his eyes away from a bunch of papers and asks you, “Yes?”

Maybe you should tiptoe around the issue, out of tact. “Was there anyone suspicious here today?”

“Yeah, you,” he replies, “Are you here about Hinami? You’re her friend, right? I see you around her a bunch.” Oh right, she told him.

“Ahahah,” you let out a nervous laugh, “Yeah. Thought I might help look around. Maybe someone took her uniform accidentally?”

“The first thing I did was ask everyone to check their bags, but who knows? Maybe they’re embarrassed and they’ll come back later to ‘fess up. Listen, don’t worry about it. I didn’t see anyone lurking around or any boys sneaking inside.”

Try as you might to get more out of him, you find that he doesn’t really have anything else to say. Thanking him for the help and saying goodbye, you leave with more thoughts in your head.

Rationally, he’s right. But then again, what if it was actually something else? You rack your brain—you’re going nuts. This club is really making your grip on reality. You can’t doubt cold, hard logic!

If there were truly someone here, they must’ve either fled and hid, and running would be impossible—the only way out would be the windows, and those are way too high up to climb to.

The only place you can think of is the equipment room, and you head there first. Although there is some organization, there is a pile of junk sitting in a corner left over from last year’s school festival, offering a mess that could potentially serve as a hiding spot.

Under your breath, you grumble to yourself, “This is crazy; what I am doing?”

Parting pieces of wood, a large net, papers, ropes, and other trash, you find something dusty and dirty at the very bottom—a gym uniform.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” you say out loud. Reaching down, you pull it the shirt and shorts free and dangle it in the air, baffled.

You hear footsteps behind you, and when you turn around, you see a volleyball club member staring at you. She runs out and cries out, “Pervert! I found the pervert! He’s come back to retrieve the uniform he hid!”

“No!” you shout, running after her, “I just found it! This is a misunderstanding!”

As your face lights up in embarrassment, you give chase, feeling as everyone’s eyes fall your way to cast judgement. No, stop that!

You curse your charm. In fact, it did the very opposite of what it was supposed to do; it’s a complete sham! Ah, this is it, the school’s image of you is forever ruined.

Whoever set this up really was a demon.

Had fun with this!
Out of curiosity, is there a reason you chose a different end song for this thread?

Why don't we just make 19 more luck charms and wear them all at once so that every roll is a crit? Who's going to stop us, a demon?

You've answered yourself.

But if banishing the demon requires rolls, then we'll crit them. It's a foolproof plan.
