Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted. No more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought. Being placed in a garrison out in the middle of nowhere wasn't the promotion you had imagined, but after the death of your commander, your rise though the ranks seemed that much more possible. Through your leadership, your garrison holds its ground through an assault and infiltration by rebel forces and manages to capture two of its heroes. After transporting the two of them to the Capital, Queen Quintis decided to promote you to Captain and to add you to her collection of personal agents.

You reach out and place your hand on Mildri’s shoulder and stop her advance, she flinches under the contact but stops moving. “He’s right Mildri, If we go in there tired we’ll make mistakes possibly fatal ones.” Mildri gives you one pleading look before giving in to her own exhaustion and slumping down to the floor. “We’ll camp inside this tunnel in case another landslide happens.” You call back to Selenas and Randolf who shuffle into the tunnel with the horses. Moments after you are all packed into the tunnel, the entrance door slides shut.

“Damit,” Randolf curses as he runs his hands against the entrance rock, pushing against it and calling out the password to no avail. Suddenly the tunnel is plunged into darkness as Mildri’s magic light winks out. The horses snort, whinny and stomp as Randolf lets out another curse.

“Mildri?” you call out as you feel your way back toward her. Your feet contact her before your hands do and you nearly trip over her. Sparks flash as Selenas attempts to light a torch the flares of light give you brief looks at Mildri. She appeared to be fine just sitting on the ground leaning against the wall of the tunnel and when Selenas’s torch flared to life, it was clear that she was unconscious, sleeping.

Taking the torch from Selenas you say, “I’ll take first watch, the rest of you get some sleep.” Agreeing without a word, Selenas and Randolf lay down to rest and moments later the sound of their slow and steady breaths are the only sounds to be heard.

Time passes slowly as you stare down the dark hallway deeper into the cave. Staring into that dark abyss you find it hard to keep your mind from wander. You think back to the fort and the goblin’s you left behind. Grintol, your wolf master and the closest thing you had to a second in command. Niddle your unfortunate patient and test subject for the detox potion. Reminiscing deeply you almost miss the light gathering at the end of the hall.

A deep gruff voice intoned at an attempted whisper and from what you could hear, it sounded like dwarvish, the voice was quickly silenced by another as the light at the end of the hall grew brighter.

You quickly whip the torch in a circle and snuff it in your armpit before lying down as quietly as you could. Prone, you inch your way over to your sleeping companions. You reach Randolf first and shake him awake, his bloodshot eyes snap open and he begins to groan at the sight of you “Fiv-“ he begins but you clamp your hand over your mouth and point down the tunnel. He growls deeply and gives you a nod, while readying himself.

You then crawl over to Selenas who was contorted into the oddest possible sleeping positon, her mouth was agape and her half of her hair was crammed into it while she snored quietly. Giving her a nudge she snorts loudly and you quickly cover her mouth. Selenas panics and starts to struggle violently until she recognizes you. You gesture to the ever increasing light and she seems to understand and begins to ready herself.

You turn to face the incoming threat when the first dwarf sticks his head around the corner.

You lay as still as possible as five dwarves make their way down the tunnel. The light from a single lantern carried by the forward most dwarf dimly illuminates you and your companions as the group comes closer. You tighten your grip on your halberd and prepare to leap to your feet when the dwarves halt suddenly. They exchange curt whispers before advancing toward a dark figure silhouetted against one of the walls. Mildri, you had forgotten to move her. The dwarves circle around her and exchange more whispers.

You glance back at Randolf who gives you a slow shake of his head and at Selenas who is barely restraining herself. What are you going to do with this mess?

Weapons clatter to the floor as the closest dwarves eyes grow wide with fear and drop their weapons. Randolf immediately steps in on your left and knocks two of the dwarfs to the ground one with a hard kick to the back, another with a mace swing into the back of the dwarf’s leg followed by a buckler backed punch to his chest knocking him flat on his back. Selenas touches her glowing sword to the throat of the dwarf on your right and he stands as still as a statue.

Seeing the capture of his fellows the, last dwarf makes a last act of defiance and fear, he reaches out and grabs a handful of Mildri’s hair. Pulling her head up, he draws a dagger from his belt and places the tip of it against Mildri’s neck. Mildri lets loose a pained screech as she is torn from her slumber. In broken Imperial the dwarf barks, “Release them, or she dies.” He pulls Mildri up even higher and presses the knife into her neck hard enough for a trickle of blood to run down her neck. “Now!” he shouts. Mildri acts before you can even respond, her hand closes around the dwarf’s knife hand and pulls it away. Her other hand then snaps to the dwarfs other hand clasping a fistful of hair. The dwarf yelps loudly and his hand releases Mildri’s hair.

Mildri rises to her feet and pulls the dwarf’s hands into the air, she then delivers a swift knee into the dwarf’s gut causing him to sputter and go into a coughing fit. Once he regained his breath the dwarf began to scream and thrash violently against Mildri’s grip which seemed to hold him in place like iron shackles. Mildri knees him in the gut again forcing the air from his lungs and cutting off his screams. You and everyone in the tunnel can only watch as Mildri repeats this action twice more, before she finally slams the dwarf’s dagger hand against the stone wall of the tunnel. The dwarf’s hand shatters into ice chunks of flesh and the dwarf lets out a shriek of terror and pain. With one of her hands free Mildri grabs the dwarf’s large beard and pulls it up exposing his neck. Releasing the dwarf’s other hand Mildri grasps his throat immediately cutting off the dwarf’s screams. After what seems like hours to you, Mildri releases the dwarf letting his now limp form crumble to the floor, his head stuck looking up.

It is now that Mildri turns to the rest of you letting her twisted and anger filled eyes pass of each and every one of you, snarling whenever her gaze passes over a dwarf. Once she finishes her sweep of all of you her face slackens little by little and her posture returns to normal. After a few more moments Mildri blinks and turns around to look at the dead dwarf behind her, “Oh no,” she whimpers “It happened again,” She saws distraughtly. Then she simply crumples in on herself and falls to the floor. No one moves for a few more moments before you manage to get a hold of yourself once more.

“Selenas go check on her, I’ll watch these two,” you say as you reposition to cover both dwarves. Snapping out of her own stupor Selenas tentatively edges to Mildri’s side and kneels down beside her.

“She’s still breathing, barely, but she doesn’t look good Baldr,” Selenas reports, while you turn your attention to the one standing dwarf, still frozen in shock and horror at Mildri’s actions. Using the end of your halberd you slowly turn the dwarfs head to face you. “What are you doing in Imperial territory dwarf,” You ask. He simply gives a blank stare. You tap the side of his head with your halberd and the dwarf finally regains awareness, He stammers out some dwarvish and points to the dwarf under your feet. You tap him with your foot until he looks up at you. You repeat the question and this dwarf gives you an answer in halting Imperial “Scouts, find old passages, defenses.”

“How many of you are there?”

The dwarf shoots a glance at his dead companion “Fifteen,”

“Does this place have a northwest exit?”

“What?”

“Is there a passage that leads northwest?”

“North, west?”

Rolling your eyes you shorten your question “Is there a passage through this mountain?”

The dwarf nods emphatically and points down the tunnel, deeper in.

“How long is it?”

“Not far.”

“Good, you will lead us out then. Randolf tie these dwarves up we are moving out.”

“Why, Captain? Theres no reason to keep these scouts alive, in fact,” Randolf says looking down at the dwarf under his foot “If we kill these ones it might slow down their scouting efforts, hell they might even retreat.” Randolf starts to lift his mace over his head as he finishes.

“Randolf, stop!” His mace swings down but halts moments before it smashes the skull of a dwarf.

Randolf looks up at you, his face a mixture of anger and disbelief. You rush over and pull him aside. “What is this Captain, are you sparing enemies of the empire?”

“No, of course not, I just need you to hold off until I take the guide out of earshot. If he sees that we are acting with mercy and that he might make it out of this alive, he will be more willing to cooperate and less likely to lead us into a trap.”

Randolf cracks into a wry smile “Heh, aren’t you a devious one Captain. Alright I’ll hold off, but can we get a move on. The sooner we get out of here, the sooner I can get some actual sleep.”

“Agreed,” You respond as you turn and shout over to Selenas “Selenas, we are moving out is Mildri awake?”

“No she is still out, but her breathing is calm.”

“Good, strap her to one of the horses. We leave now.”

After helping Selenas to tie Mildri to one of the horses, it only takes a few moments to collect the rest of the equipment. As you set out Selenas leading the horses you keeping an eye on your dwarf guide. No one notices Randolf lagging behind, A little while later he come trotting up next to you wiping his dagger on his sleeve. He gives you wink before taking a swig from his canteen and taking up position next to you.

The dwarf leads you through turn after turn in the maze of intersections and forks under the mountain. You are lead on for what feels like hours, although it was hard to tell with no sun to guide you. Soon though you yourself feel the effects of the little to no sleep you’ve been running on. Your thoughts become cloudy and dominated by thoughts of rest, so you nearly weep with joy when coming to a dead end your dwarf guide says a phrase in dwarvish and the wall of the dead end opens up out into a pre-dawn night. The cool fresh air invigorates you after spending all night in the musty tunnels. A quick glance around reveals dry grasslands below with desserts stretching as far as your eyes could see to the west. The dwarf had lead you nearly all the damn way to Filt, turning a several days journey into a few hours one. You were so close in fact, you could reach the town in a few hours if you wanted to.

As you stare out at the rather impressive view, you hear a thud to your left and turn just in time to the dwarf keel over and tumble down the mountain side. Standing just behind where the dwarf fell was Randolf mace in hand.

Admonish Randolf?
>Yes

“Randolf!” you snap.

“What, he already led us out, there was no reason to keep him alive.”

“Even so, you did it without my authorization, while you are out and the field and assigned to me you will wait for my orders before doing something so drastic.”

Randolf gives you a short glare before starring down the mountain where the dwarf fell. He gives a huff and takes a swig from his canteen, “Sure, Captain whatever you say.”

It is then that Selenas staggers out of the tunnel leading the horses. She leans heavily on one of the horses and rubs at her sleep filled eyes. Behind her Mildri hangs, unconsciously swinging from the horse’s back.

“You can let her down now.” You say to Selenas, “We are going to camp here for the night and head down to Filt tomorrow.”

Selenas nods and lets Mildri down from the horse before laying down herself to get some rest. Randolf remains where he is saying “I’ll take the watch this time,” while his tone makes you slightly uneasy you are grateful for a chance to finally get some rest. As soon as your head finds the ground you fall asleep.

You are woken hours later by Selenas saying “The sun is up do you want to get moving.” It was about mid-morning and clear sky met your eyes. You were still tired, but you could at least focus now. “Yes” you respond and rise to your feet. I looks like Selenas had woken you last as everyone else was ready to move including Mildri who was awake now although she looked awful, her eyes were bloodshot and sunken while her skin looked white as a sheet and stretched over her bones. Regardless she stood, ready to move.

The descent down the mountain went smoothly enough with rest and daylight navigating the rough terrain is simple enough. Soon you find yourself standing in front of the thick adobe walls of the town of Filt. Passing through the gate into the town proper you find a well laid out set of streets running between sturdily built adobe structures. The town itself looked quite busy with people, animals and cart moving about, but something about the scene in front of you made you uneasy, you couldn’t quite nail it down but none the less the hair on your neck stood on end.

“Randolf, Mildri do as you will.” They both shoot you quizzical glance “As of right now both of you are on leave for the rest of the day. Use this time well because after today things are going to get very busy.” You turn from them and to Selenas “You’re with me; we’re going to find the Spymaster’s informant.”

She gives a tired sigh but come up alongside you anyway. You look back to Randolf and Mildri to find that they had both disappeared. With a dismissive shrug, you and Selenas head out to find Hisa the informant.

Unfortunately, the Spymaster had neglected to tell you how you were to find this informant in his rush to steal the cloak from the armory. With no leads, you end up wandering the streets looking for someone who looks like an informant. Mere moments into your search, you are stopped by an emaciated and legless beggar who throws himself in front of you. “Please sir, surely a wealthy man such as yourself, could spare a coin for a crippled wretch.” The man says his voice hoarse and cracked. He flashes you the saddest face he can must to little effect. Seeing your indifference he turns his attention to Selenas who you can see snap like a twig to the man’s begging.

She elbows you in the side and whines “Oh just give him something, look at the poor fellow.”

This, ask for information on our contact. He may actually be our contact as well. The homeless, or those who appear to be homeless, are often ignored by most and therefore make excellent information gatherers or disguises.

Sighing you reach into your pack and pull out a small package of dried salted meat and hand it to the beggar. He quickly unwraps the meat and takes a bite. He nearly weeps as he chews on the meat, wrapping himself around your legs; he thanks you profusely, groveling in the dust at your feet. You shoot Selenas an annoyed glance that she returns with a large toothy grin.

“Enough of that,” you say as you pry the man away from your legs. “Now this generous sir has some questions that he’d like the answers to.”

“Ask me anything sir, I know all the comings and goings of this city even if I can’t come and go.” The beggar answers with something like pride.

“Do you know where I can find a man named Hisa.”

The beggar brightens immensely “Hisa, I know him, a kinder soul I never did know. Yeah he gives me food and money for gossip all the time kind of like we’re doing now.”

“Do you know where I can find him?”

“Sure, if you’ll carry me I’ll lead you right to him.”

“Or you can just tell me where he is.”

“Eh, I’m not so good at giving directions, but I can definitely lead you there.”

With a sigh you reach down and pick up the beggar. “Thank you, but I can’t see very well from down here, if you’ll let me…” he trails off while with surprising dexterity he clambers up onto your shoulders “There, much better, now this way,” he says pointing down the street and spurring you with his leg stumps.

“Onward steed,” Selenas laughs cheerily at your predicament and shoves you down the street.

The beggar leads you through many streets, side alleys and tight squeezes, until at last he stops you in front of a back alley entrance to a rather plain looking building.

“In here.” He says dropping down from you and crawling over to open door. He gestures you inside. Walking through the door you find yourself in a short hallway the leads to a set of long descending stairs. Closing the door and squeezing past you the beggar hops down the stairs. Following him you walk in to a small basement room. Shelves of scrolls line the walls and a large candle lit and document strewn table dominates the center of the room. Lifting himself onto the table the beggar turns to you.

“So what did the Spymaster tell you, Captain Baldr.”

Taken aback you can only answer, “Are you Hisa.”

“In the flesh, cripple, beggar, and sometime imperial informant, Hisa that’s me.”

“So the Spymaster informed you of my arrival.”

“Yes, I know he may not look or act it, but the royal Spymaster, is a spymaster for a reason. He is very good at his job.”

“I see, well why don’t you start out by telling me…”
