Noel Tiberius di Hazaran, now ranked Seventh in the Organization, has experienced a meteoric rise though the ranks over the last few weeks. Which isn't to say that it was unearned... her performance on a series of tough missions back to back, her refinement of her specialized “White Fist” technique, and her prolonged fight against the awakened being Saria fully justified a promotion to the single-digits.

But to reach Seven so quickly required some additional chaos within the single-digit ranks. Noel's newfound friend, the venerable “Kind” Olivia, was killed in battle and her friend Serana was evidently so badly maimed trying to avenge her that she has struggled to recover as a warrior, meaning her promotion would be to Seventh instead of Ninth as was intended... two more entries in the already lengthy list of her peers who have had to suffer so that she could grow in skill and status within the Organization's ranks.

Not everything has been a disaster though. During her nearly week-long duel with Saria, Noel managed to attain a state known as “half-awakening”: the result of a Warrior temporarily losing control and becoming a monster before regaining control and forcing themselves to revert. While she still knows little about the implications of this new form, it does seem to have involved her body finally accepting her surgically-implanted yōma side.

Noel would also meet Valentina, a cheerful and energetic Warrior also hailing from Hazaran who accepted Noel's previous identity as princess. Despite their somewhat differing personalities the two forged a fast friendship, and Valentina would ultimately reveal the existence of other half-awakened warriors including herself. Thankful for having a friend again and hopeful that Valentina would live long enough for the two warriors to see each other again, Noel accepted her new assignment as a single-digit.

Coming down from the mountains for a mission to investigate the alleged theft of a barrel of wine by a yōma, Noel came face to face with an unusually polite and oddly personable awakened being who declared herself to be “Trueheart” Sabela: an Abyssal One. Left with no real alternative in the face of a power that could reshape the geopolitical landscape if she had half the inclination, Noel has agreed to sit for a late dinner with Sabela where it will be her nerve and her skills as a conversationalist that will be put to the test.

Swords are of no more use here...

As previously mentioned on Twitter I'll be answering questions now, anything that doesn't get into spoilers territory. So feel free to ask anything that you want clarified, or any aspects of worldbuilding or the like.

I'll post a story update in an hour or when people stop asking questions, whichever happens first.

Is Noel allowed to have a waifu? Is she interested in waifus?

Sorry I know it's not a serious question.

On the more serious side: Is there a "Reassert yourself as Monarch" route?
>>
>>2837583
>>2837588
To give a serious answer to a not very serious question, the Organization places no restrictions on personal relationships so long as they don't get in the way of work. Suppression is way easier than trying to balance those needs, but short flings and "lesbians of convenience" aren't unheard of.

>>2837587
Claymore is a dark fantasy setting that's sometimes compared to Berserk, which revolves around medically enhanced female warriors who fight human-eating monsters called yoma, using the oversized swords they (and the manga) are named for.
>>
>>2837595
That's one possibility I've prepared for, though as with most big goals it's far from as simple as that description of it might suggest. Noel's not just going to be able to walk back in, kick the usurper in the dick, and declare herself queen.
>>
>>2837602
Well right there's the whole civil war and fun complications like the organization trying to stop her. Yoma coming out to feast on the chaos.

Maybe that 'royal' Yoma we saw recently decides she deserves the throne or Noel should be a liege lord.
>>
>>2837603
You'll have a chance to discern a little more about that particular yoma, since you're still sitting at the table with her.
>>
>>2837603

>>
Well, if nobody has any more questions I'll get back to getting the first story post ready.

Be back in a few.

>>2837623
You are Noel Tiberius di Hazaran, a half-awakened warrior ranked number Seven in the Organization. In this place, you are not in control.

An Abyssal One, the rare and never-discussed result of a former top-ranked warrior fully awakening, has essentially cornered you and obliged you to join her in the ruined castle she currently calls home. She has named herself as 'Trueheart' Sabela, capable of manipulating your words and actions using her yōki. A being of both vast power and great subtlety, a dangerous combination.

Thus far she has been what you would call a gracious host, offering you bread and fruit and wine without any obvious shows of hostility. However you can feel it, with every fiber of your being, that Sabela is less of a simple threat and more of a living cataclysm. The threat there is implicit and exists at the grandest of scales.

“How was it you came to be half-awakened?” she asks you, knowing full well as you do that attempting to lie outright would be futile.

“You know of my fight with Saria,” you summarize. “She was pushing me to the point of exhaustion in an effort to force me to awaken for her, and it was working. So I chose to hold out as long as I could in the hopes that if I allowed myself to awaken at the very end of my endurance I would revert.”

“And it worked. I was fortunate.”

“I believe that is untrue,” Sabela insists sternly. “You have a gift, Noel. You should recognize and embrace it.”

“A gift?”

Your Abyssal host nods. “A gift. The degree of precise yōki manipulation you demonstrated earlier when you struck me made me suspect, and your story of how you half-awakened confirmed it. Though the amount of yōki your body generates is nothing special, your aptitude for using that yōki is praiseworthy... even by my own standards.”

Coming from a true monster like her who can use yōki to influence people's minds, that really does count as praise. But you can't help but wonder why she's telling you this, though it's hard to see it as being for your own good. Perhaps she's simply interested, but it feels far more likely that she has some purpose in mind for you.

You recall Sabela's earlier words, about your supposed similarities... and her assertion that one day you will seek her out on your own.

>Ask her to explain her previous confidence. Does she know something about the Organization that you don't?

“You know something,” you accuse her quietly. “Don't you? Something about the Organization?”

“I know many things about the Organization, dear,” Sabela points out with a smirk. “You'll have to be more specific.”

“What I mean is something that would drive me to abandon the Organization,” you clarify with a frown. “Some dark secret in its past perhaps, or their guilt in a particularly nefarious incident.”

“Again,” Sabela repeats, her own expression darkening. “You'll have to be more specific.”

“That's quite the implicit accusation.”

“It's quite the Organization.”

“Surely you must have something specific in mind,” you press. “Not a simple case of corruption or immorality, I would imagine.”

Sabela's eyes fall on you heavily, with an intense focus... you'd even go so far as to call it an appraising look. “You are correct. However, I do not feel like telling you about it.”

“Why?” you ask. “What do you have to gain from withholding that sort of information from me, if my knowing would advance your own plans?”

“You assume correctly that I do need you to learn of this specific fact as a part of my own designs,” Sabela admits with a sigh. “However, I must also confess that I have no particular desire to push you too fast. If you learned the true nature of the Organization too quickly... it could drive you mad.”

“That bad?”

Sabela gives you a stern look. “It's quite the Organization.”

“Tell me,” you press, changing the topic slightly. “You seem to feel a great amount of antipathy towards the Organization... was it you who murdered Olivia?”

Your harsh tone comes as a surprise even to yourself, and Sabela seems taken aback for a moment before she regains her composure. “I would appreciate if you would not take that tone with me, young lady. But I can see you cared for Olivia, so I will overlook the slight and offer the answer you deserve.”

“No,” she insists sternly. “I may hate the Organization, but I hold nothing but compassion in my heart for its warriors. I swear to you now that I had nothing to do with Olivia's death... though I suspect I know who did. Tell me this, did her killer use her black card to summon a second warrior into an ambush?”

Your eyes narrow slightly. “Yes, why?”

“Let me tell you about the Abyssal Ones, Noel,” she replies, shutting her eyes in contemplation. “There are three of us, from three distinct generations. Of those I am the youngest by a fair margin... though it is my belief that I am the most powerful, by at least a little.”

“And the others have not banded together to kill you?” you ask.

She shakes her head. “That is not how it works, though it would be unfair to say that no cooperation is possible.”

“How do you mean?”

“The other two Abyssal Ones, former first-ranked warriors of the Organization, are named Salem and Constanzia. They trace their origin to the early days of the Organization, where the highest goal was to produce a set of twins capable of close cooperation in battle.”

This... is entirely new information to you. “Twins? To what end?”

“For the purpose of controlling an Awakening,” Sabela explains. “By cultivating and expanding upon a natural tie that exists between siblings, it is possible for one to awaken completely while the other synchronizes their yōki, allowing the awakened warrior to retain her human mind and return to her original form after accomplishing her mission.”

“Controlled awakening?” you muse.

“I... am unsure what that is meant to achieve,” you admit. “Would it be necessary to contain the threat of single-digit awakened beings?”

“Perhaps this was the original logic,” Sabela admits calmly, “though you would have to ask the old men back at Lavinia to know for certain... assuming for a moment that you trusted anything they said.”

“That is beside the point,” she continues. “As you may have surmised both of the other Abyssal Ones awakened at the same time as their twin sisters. The volatility of a twin's reaction to her sister coming to harm could not be erased while maintaining the ability to synchronize at the required level, and so the Organization correctly determined that this was the inescapable fate of any such warriors. After the second such incident the remaining twin warriors were... discarded, to put it euphemistically.”

“They were murdered,” you summarize. “So which of those two you mentioned do you believe did this?”

“Neither,” Sabela tells you, raising a slender finger to continue her lecture. “After awakening Constanzia and her sister Rafaela remained nearly inseparable, and operate together to this day. Individually they would stand little realistic chance against myself or Salem, but together they would be too great of a challenge to be worth fighting.”

“Salem and her sister Ella on the other hand did nothing but argue from the day of their awakening until the day they separated. Over their approach towards the Organization, later over their interactions with Constanzia and Rafaela... but by the time I awakened they had already fallen out over the argument of who was more deserving of the top ranking while they were warriors.”

“So they split over something so trivial?” you snort. “I don't know why, but that sounds completely believable.”

“You have good sense,” Sabela shakes her head. “Sometimes it is the stupid things that drive people apart, and this was one such time. Knowing what she is like, Olivia's death sounds like it was her work.”

“My father must have known who my mother was when I was left to him,” you reason, “based on my natural hair color and the timing involved, though no one else ever seemed to know. I suppose any one of the rumors could have been true. But my father was always... kind, even when he was not himself. He took the time to teach me the things I would need to know to be a ruler, and he never spoke down to me. I always appreciated that about him.”

“And was he truly mad?” Sabela asks carefully. “I have heard rumors of course, but I suspect you view such things with the same skeptical eye that I do.”

“I rarely saw the evidence, but his mental condition was deteriorating,” you admit. “He had already made plans for how and when to abdicate to me. He must have understood that he had less time than he would have liked.”

“And despite that, they killed him. They tried to kill me. On that they obviously failed.”

“And the Organization had a representative in town, who was very close to the scene of the coup,” Sabela guesses. “Fancy that.”

'Yeah,” you frown. “Fancy that. Are you implying what I think you are?”

“Perhaps,” Sabela nods. “Though jumping to conclusions would obviously be inappropriate.”

“That summarizes my own attitude,” you agree. “That is how I came to be part of the Organization, anything else is a separate story.”

“I understand,” Sabela tells you. Her eyes flick upwards towards your sword, which has been catching the light from the fire for a while now. You've noticed her do it once or twice before, understanding that it's an unusual blade for a Warrior to bear. But she doesn't ask about it.

“There was a girl, my age,” you explain. “Emma. She was my friend... we helped each other through the procedure, and through our training. She died, years ago. I took the cross guard of her sword and traded it for mine, so that a part of her would be with me and a part of me would be left with her.”

“I see,” Sabela nods thoughtfully. “But that only explains part of it.”

“The material was combined with metal from Saria's sword after the guard broke in my fight with her,” you explain. “And the pommel was something Olivia traded for mine, before she passed.”

“I thought I recognized the shape,” Sabela sighs, “by the time I became a warrior the new swords being produced had the finer pointed pommel design rather than the old rounded one, but a few of the older ones were still in use including Olivia's.”

“So you knew Olivia?” you ask.

“I did,” she admits. “Which is part of why I took exception to your tone earlier. She was my friend, until the end.”

“So now you know my story,” you shrug. “My childhood and my life as a warrior... the rest of it hasn't been written yet.”

And in the next moment you see stars... then nothing.

The pain returns shortly after, a dull ache in your head and a certain sensitivity to the light of... day?

Your eyes fly open.

“Ah, so you're awake!” a voice greets you cheerfully.

“Lord Byron?” you ask, trying to will the swimming trio of fuzzy-looking men into focus.

“Yup, you must've been exhausted,” he replies warmly. “How'd it go?”

“It went... fine,” you reply, still not really sure how to reply. “How long did I sleep?”

“It's just shy of noon now,” he informs you, now down to just one fuzzy-looking man. “Nobody saw you come in, you could've slept in a real bed!”

It occurs to you... Sabela was not lying. You met your mother last night, and she was an Abyssal One.

No one can know.

Not a single person can ever know. Not Valentina, not Tomas, not this guy, and certainly not any of the old men at Lavinia.

Last night never happened. You'll need a story.

“I've never fought a drunken yōma before,” you lie, cracking your neck awkwardly. This will have to be vague enough that nobody can disprove it, detailed enough to satisfy his curiosity... but simple enough for you to remember all the lies yourself. “It was already drunk, and smacked me across the head from an... inventive angle. Sent me headfirst into a big rock.”

“You won though?” the old man asks.

You nod, wincing slightly for show. “Yeah... the wine I assumed was tainted, so I destroyed it. Sorry, safer that way. It's not like you could re-sell it anyway.”

“You're right about that,” Byron sighs dramatically. “I hadn't considered that possibility. But thank you anyway for taking this job. We'll all sleep a lot safer now.”

“Of course,” you reply calmly, standing and dusting yourself off. “Thank you for your hospitality.”

“Would you like something to eat?” he offers. “There's a little wine left as well.”

>I should be moving on, but thank you very much for the offer.

So then was Dad really a "madman"?
Like, he had to deal with the fact that he now has inner working knowledge of the Organization, and really wanted Noel to have the best childhood before the inevitable.

I mean, King did state in >>2837598 That Claymores can have personal relationships as long as it doesn't really interfere with work. Sabela was able to balance her relationship with Dad for at least 2 years. Long enough for her to be coronated as Queen of Hazaran, get married to dad, and have a daughter.
Shame she wasn't able to have the opportunity to see Noel grow up.

>>2838531
>Claymore
>sterile
Since when did you get the impression that claymores were sterile? I see nothing in canon texts that denied claymores the possibility of having kids. Just look at Riful and Dauf and that adorable ABaby that rose from their corpses.

>>
>>2838556
>Long enough for her to be coronated as Queen of Hazaran, get married to dad
Whoa there. None of that happened, Noel was basically abandoned on the King's doorstep.

>Riful and Dauf and that adorable ABaby that rose from their corpses
So majestic.
>>
>>2838556
No actual canon lore, but I’d imagine from the position of their stigmata and the effect those yoma flesh would have on their internal organ, I would imagine that carrying pregnancy to term would be near impossible, whereas awakened being had fully integrated their Yoma and Human part to the point where their reproductive system is viable again

But again, headcanon, and I’m not the one writing the story

Well then, I seem to have gotten my sources mixed up.
But nevertheless, it brings terrible implications to Sabela's time in the org while she was in her 3 trimesters. And if the Org knew about Sabela's pregnancy. It might also why the org treats Noel as a very special case on the margins.
>>

>>2838602
who says we need to be swole? We have natural Yoma bits that provide the innate swole. What we need is to be /fit/ through our technique refinement.
>>
>>2838616
but how did Sabela manage to hide her pregger status from the Org as a claymore? Or did she go full woke when the pregnancy test came up positive?

Your head is too full of swirling questions and lingering doubts to be of much use to anyone right now, and so despite having eaten and drunk last night you quickly accept the generous offer.

Over a meal of warm bread, honey, and a bottle of last night's wine from Stanislaus Byron's own table, you pose a question. “How did you contact our Organization? Can you do it again?”

“I certainly can, and you're welcome to stay here as long as you need to,” Byron replies with a firm nod.

You eat as little as you think you can get away with, compliment the Lord of the manor on his wine, and set off to busy yourself until Tomas arrives. The next few days are spent seeing to Alysheba's needs, helping with heavy loads around the estate, and practicing combat drills taken from the monks' book. You also dive deep into the system of hand signs all through the evenings before taking just as little sleep as you can get away with.

Who knows when the next time you'll have free time like this with no one hanging over your shoulder will be?

Eventually however Tomas does arrive one morning, seemingly from out of nowhere.

“Good morning, Lord Byron,” he greets the man with a slight bow.

“Welcome to my home,” Lord Byron replies gruffly. “Your warrior here did a fantastic job for me.”

“That's good to hear, I hope she wasn't too much of a handful,” Tomas replies.

Byron shakes his head. “Appetite of a bird and the social graces of a princess. A professional to boot.”

“My, I suppose I simply bring out the worst in her then,” Tomas chuckles. “Fancy that.”

Fancy that... you've heard him say that before. Your mother used that same turn of phrase in the same context, of sarcasm. They even have a similar inflection.

It's not proof... but you get the sneaking suspicion.

“I have a new mission for you, Seven,” he continues, oblivious to the deductive process playing out in your head. “Please follow me.”

“Thank you for your hospitality, Lord Byron,” you offer a slight bow. He is after all a horse-lord.

He offers an equally slight bow in response, not knowing your true identity. “And thank you for your company.”

You veer off towards the barn and take Alysheba, his feed bags, blanket, and his pack saddle, and ride out to meet Tomas with his own horse... just as black and as miserable-looking as he is.

“So? What is this mission?” you ask, nudging Alysheba towards the main road.

“An unusual one, to be sure,” Tomas replies with an unnerving smile.

“By the usual standards,” you grumble, “or compared to the last few jobs I've taken?”

“Both,” Tomas admits. “You are of course aware of the rule that no Warrior is to take human life, under penalty of death?”

“Acutely,” you respond. “That would be relevant... how, exactly?”

“On this mission you will operate as part of a small team,” Tomas informs you. “And owing to the nature of the task at hand, the Council has agreed that rule will have to be... temporarily suspended for you and your peers.”

In the canon manga that was what the Organization was shooting for, controllable bioweapons able to massacre the Asakarum and their kin.

Sadly it ended much like it did here, with one twin losing the leash on the other and awakening themselves when the other was hurt.

The ongoing creation of Youma and awakened being was intended to help form a suitable bioweapon. That's why the organization existed in canon.

Is true. Valentina holds Noel in high enough regard that while it might change the nature of their relationship, she'd accept that this is just how things are.

Those words... you must have misunderstood them.

“Apologies, Tomas,” you begin. “I need you to repeat that.”

“We will be temporarily suspending the rule that you are to avoid killing humans,” Tomas repeats, this time more directly. “For you and for whichever Warriors the Council sees fit to send.”

“That's a foundational rule of the Organization,” you muse, still stunned enough that you're almost ready to doubt your ears a second time. “And you plan to simply... 'suspend' it? For what reason?”

“Because an awakened being has appeared who can control the actions of otherwise normal humans,” Tomas explains carefully. “We believe based on the reports of one of our spies that she is spreading some sort of pheremones or spores via sexual contact. She entered the target town disguised as a whore and has operated there for several weeks.”

“All contact with the villagers ceased three days ago.”

“And so to ensure that the contagion no longer spreads you intend to perform a clean sweep of the site,” you guess. “Raze it to the ground and eliminate the victims as well as the perpetrator.”

“It's the only way to be sure,” Tomas declares.

“Are you certain that is necessary?” you ask carefully. “Far be it from me to question the wisdom of the Council, but assaulting civilians who have been victimized by a yōma would seem counterproductive.”

“This is the result of the situation we are in,” Tomas replies with a sigh. “I cannot overstate the potential risk involved here. Even were you to kill the target there is no way to guarantee that the situation will be secure afterwards.”

“And I take it that using human mercenaries is out of the question,” you realize without even bothering to suggest it. “With such a focus on containment, adding more humans to the situation would be a mistake.”

“You take it correctly,” Tomas agrees sternly. “Once an individual is infected the agent seems to transfer by contact with infected bodily fluids, including blood. We have considered this very carefully, and the Council considers a complete purge to be the only viable strategy.”

You hate to admit it, but it does seem that the Council is correct in their assessments if their goal is to prevent this target's influence from spreading any further.

“And what makes you so certain that whatever warriors you send will not simply spread this contaminant?” you press, changing your focus somewhat to accept that the Council's orders are the ones that make the most sense. “Or do you intend to purge our team once we are done?”

“No need for such dramatics,” Tomas insists. “Our current Number Eight, Sofia, and her handler did what you could call some investigatory work.”

“And?”

“They were both exposed to contaminated blood,” Tomas recounts. “Sofia used concentrated yōki to purge the agent from her body. She could not do the same for her handler, who had to be destroyed. Fire is similarly effective in destroying the contaminant.”

“And this yōki method works?” you press.

Tomas nods calmly. “A third... subject... was exposed to samples of Sofia's blood. He showed no symptoms.”

>So what you want me to do is go in with a team, kill everyone, and burn the corpses. Is that correct?

Olivia would've been PERFECT for this type of mission since she can simply 'cure' the victims by invoking ranged Yoki to purge the MUSK from the victims. It's a shame that she was killed by an abyssal one.

Something about this whole situation bothers you a little... and you think you can put your finger on it.

“You don't actually know what team will be sent there, do you?” you ask bluntly.

Tomas and his horse come to a stop. “Excuse me?”

“You don't know who else the Council is sending,” you repeat, this time more sure of yourself. “They didn't bother to tell you, did they?”

“Any more astute observations from you for the day?” he snaps suddenly, “or are we through here?”

You have to admit, you're a bit taken aback... in all the years he's been your handler you've never heard Tomas lose his temper at anyone. It was one of the few positive things you've had to say about him.

“Good,” he replies, taking your silence as a no. “As I'm certain your clever little brain has pieced together by now, you have been selected because your unique fighting style can be used to execute the infected humans without spilling their blood and spreading around that awakened being's filth unnecessarily.”

“This is an execution mission. All targets are to be disposed of as though they were yōma themselves, because they certainly pose no less of a threat.”

“I never really had a choice in this, did I?” you ask bitterly.

For a moment you think that Tomas is going to shout at you, but he sighs instead. “Why is it I always get the willful ones... no. You signed away anything resembling “choice” the day you joined the Organization. All except for one thing.”

“And that is?”

“You can choose where and how you die.”

Those words though, about getting the “willful ones”... those strike a chord with you. Could he possibly be referring to your mother? Whatever it is, it obviously upsets him enough for him to break his customary stoic facade.

Why do I get the feeling that Tomas was privy to the knowledge of Sabela's pregnancy? Like he's kept at arms length from the council circle while still within the Org.
And his out-of-character reaction phrase "why do I always get the willful ones" gives me the impression that he's got a heart underneath all of that.

He would love to handle the unwilling claymores that resist and pull at the chains of restraint because then it would make his emotional detachment easier in his line of work.

But apparently he gets the willing volunteer claymores who march to their deaths with a smile. And that unnerves him greatly. Even moreso whenever the claymore he's assigned to don't come back from their mission. So he hides all of his bitterness with sarcasm and puts up a manipulative act.

>>Leave it be. He's worked up enough already.

>>2845975
"Willful", not "willing". They're almost opposite.

You want to press on... but you sense that there's something deeply personal there. It could be one of two things: either Tomas has always gotten the stubborn, independent warriors who have left him with a poor reputation within the Organization, or he's been punished by repeatedly giving him the troublemakers with the idea that it will cause him more frustration that way. But there's another way to look at this as well, from your perspective. Something that needs to be considered.

As often as you and Tomas have butted heads over the years, it's always been at least partly in jest. If you're right about this then it may even be the case that some of your woes have been due not to Tomas failing as a handler, but the Council refusing to give him the information to pass along to you.

So for now, it's best to leave it well enough alone.

“What's the name of the town?” you sigh, determined to move on. You ease Alysheba back into his natural gait, and Tomas follows suit.

“Arbrau,” he informs you. “It's along Sakia's northwest coastline, a small village on steep hills with a small, sheltered harbor. A ship wrecked there not long before the target showed up in the village, we think that may be how she arrived.”

“Northwest Sakia... that'd be...” you muse. “Eighteen's territory? What was her name again?”

“Elsa,” Tomas supplies you with the necessary name. “She usually haunts the area around Vaila.”

“I see,” you nod, making a mental note. “And where will the Council be expecting me to meet with my team?”

“In the hills inland of Arbrau,” Tomas tells you. “The road into town runs down a narrow valley. Any passage by the coast would be too treacherous.”

So why are the single (digit) ladies stuck in the mountains but are almost constantly asked to roam and act as backup? Isn't it supposed to be the other way around?
>>
>>2848234
Because the mountains are still something of an impediment to travel, leaving them as isolated stations with small populations. So single-digits are the ones who can handle themselves in isolated conditions where backup will never get there in time, but also fast enough to serve as mobile force multipliers in nearby regions when that becomes necessary.

The harder it is to get to a certain place, the higher ranked the local Claymore is likely to be as a rule of thumb.
>>
>>2848245
I'm also guessing it's also a pain for the handlers who work with the single digits.

After a few days of uneventful riding you reach the city of Vaila, a sprawling vista not unlike the Capital city back in Hazaran. Not only is there a soaring cathedral to the twin Goddesses here, there are several smaller temples that serve the adherents of the local animistic religion. Much more humble buildings serve as teahouses, restaurants, and shops dealing in goods from the far reaches of the known world. Warm-colored stone glows in the evening light, and the sea surface glistens like flat glass.

But you also sense something out of place here as well. Two things, in fact. One of them wouldn't be surprising if it turned out to be Elsa's yōki, which is good. That's what you came here for. But the other is very close to her, and much more powerful.

You'd think they were fighting were it not for the fact that neither of them seems... for lack of a better word, “agitated”.

So you pick your way through the evening bustle, working your way deeper into the city until you reach a wide square: a market, lit by paper lanterns strewn across the fronts of the wood and canvas stalls.

“So that's who it was,” the one you assume to be Elsa greets you. “And you would be...”

“Noel, number Seven,” you introduce yourself, holding out your hand towards the short-haired girl. “You would be Elsa?”

“I am,” she nods as she takes your hand in hers. “I assume you can tell me what's going on?”

“Mission,” you inform her simply. “Who's your other guest?”

“I don't know,” Elsa admits with a sigh. “I tried to get her to talk, but honestly? She... kinda scares me.”

“And she wouldn't tell you who she was, or you didn't ask?” you ask in confusion.

“I couldn't get a word out of her. She's over there, drinking some hibiscus tea.”

“Thanks,” you nod. “I think she might be my partner for this mission.”

“Good luck,” Elsa grumbles.

When you finally lay eyes on the stronger warrior you sensed, with pale braids in her hair, you're shaken by the look in her eyes when she turns towards you. So... empty. As if their owner was completely dead inside. The second thing you notice is that she's missing her right arm.

This must be Serana.

“I assume you've been briefed?” you press.

In response, Serana nods once.

“I see,” you reply with a frown. “Are there any other warriors joining us, at least that you know of?”

You have a sudden suspicion about this... you didn't get the impression from Olivia that the warrior she was talking about was taciturn, and the look in her eyes makes you think that it's less a question of wanting to speak and more one of an inability to do so.

Reaching out, you tap your fingertips lightly against the collar of Serana's uniform.

“May I see?” you ask, carefully holding eye contact as you wait to see any signs of an emotional response. And for a moment, you notice her brow furrow ever so slightly.

She breaks eye contact as she reaches up and gently pushes your hand away, but just as you're about to apologize she unfastens her collar and opens her top down to halfway between her breasts. With a tug, she reveals what you suspected.

Your fingertips lightly probe the jagged line across the base of her throat. It must have been a very deep wound when it was fresh, and it explains her silence even more directly than the loss of her arm and her dear friend do.

“You're an offensive-type,” you summarize, as behind you Elsa turns away. “You did well to set such a grievous wound so quickly, but you misaligned your vocal cords in a rush to fix your trachea.”

In your head, you run over the options again and again. Cutting her throat open again not only puts her life in unnecessary danger, you're not even sure that it would work. It seems that her vocal cords are so badly damaged that further trauma even with the goal of repairing them would just lead to the same result. And you couldn't help her do it either, it's not like you're Olivia.

Even her arm. You could shave another inch off the stump and sever your own to match it to hers, and her own regenerative abilities no matter how weak compared to your own should be able to make it stay put. Then you would simply regenerate your own arm: you've never re-grown anything more than a finger or two in the past, but on paper at least your own abilities should be enough to replace the sacrificed limb with one of equal strength. It would probably even maintain its muscle memory.

Therein lies the problem... your original arm would be attached to Serana, but it wouldn't be hers. It would still be yours, the arm of a half-awakened warrior who regardless of when Sabela decided to bed your father was never fully human to begin with. To even manage a wild guess as to what the results would be is beyond your ability to reckon. There's no precedent from which you could even begin to think about it.

That leaves one frustrating conclusion, the only one you can make.

“The remaining damage is permanent.”

It seems that this is nothing new for Serana. She must have heard this before, she knows her limited options. She re-fastens her uniform, and gingerly pushes her hair back into place.

“I'm... going to go get some tea,” Elsa mutters, “please excuse me.”

She takes off, somewhat rattled at the condition of your former number Three warrior. How you want to respond to Serana isn't immediately clear.

Choose ONE:
>Help her practically. There are some ways of working around her injuries, just off the top of your head.
>Reassure her emotionally. She's lost a lot, not just body parts either, and she could probably use the support.

Teach her the sign language. This will make her feel less isolated, and might help her emotionally as well.

Instead of setting a tone of getting huggy and emotional, the practical option is giving her options she may not realize she has.

it really confuses me when it comes to QM dice reasons. like the last time we saw QM roll dice, it was for Sabela with the implicit meaning on how well Sabela tries to resist from breaking character as a Yukari, and reveal the fact that she's Noel's mom. Which is technically rolling against Anon dice. but he also waffles between rolling for allies and rolling for enemies and we generally don't know if the numbers are good or bad for us. It's somewhat frustrating yet understandable.

“I can't change what happened to you,” you bow your head slightly, “and I'm sorry for that. But, I promise to do what I can do for you, to help you cope. Starting with this.”

You fish the monks' book out of your pouch and hold it out to Serana, who stares first at the book and then at you, seemingly unimpressed.

“Go on, take it.”

Serana takes the book, seemingly to humor you at first... then freezes after she opens it down the middle. She sets it down on the table and flips through it clumsily with her remaining fingers, slowly realizing what you've given her.

She looks back up at you, pointing at your forehead with the book still clutched in the rest of her fingers.

You nod, raising your left hand.

YES. I READ MOST THAT.

Her eyes widen slightly at the realization that you just communicated a concept to her using only the fingers on your left hand... you had a conversation with her, no matter how brief, without moving your lips or making a sound.

The corners of her eyes are a little wet as she stares at you in dawning comprehension of what you just casually produced from your back pocket.

“There's something else,” you continue. “From what I understand your style revolved around a two-handed style?”

Serana nods once.

“What if I were to tell you there was a way to perform a similar technique with just one arm?” you offer.

Serana stares at you in confusion.

“It's a technique called the “Earthbreaker”, used by an old warrior of a previous generation,” you explain. “She told me how to do it before she died.”

Serana points at you, then taps her forehead, then her chest.

>Of course I'll teach you... right now, I want nothing more than to help you.

You reach across the table and grasp her hand in yours, holding resolute contact with her eyes. Finally they're the eyes of a living woman... she even has a little more color in her cheeks.

“Honestly, it hurt me a little to see the look in your eyes,” you admit. “Knowing what you've been through, and knowing that I can do something to help... I can't help but want to do everything I can for you.”

“So I'll say it again: you have my promise, Serana. Sign language and the Earthbreaker... I'll give them both to you.”

After a few moments she closes her eyes and squeezes your hand back, just a little.

The next morning you awake in the inn room you shared with Serana, rolling out of bed to find her already awake and still sitting on the floor against the wall. After a brief breakfast of dried crackers and two scrambled eggs between the two of you, it's time to head out towards Arbrau. The road will be long, especially considering how short the straight-line distance actually is, because it has to loop far and wide back into the hinterland in order to approach the seaside town from above.

“So this is how the technique is supposed to work,” you begin, drawing your sword. Serana watches carefully, not just because she's paying attention to your words but because she's noticed the unusual combination of fittings. “What you do is you use your yōki to build up force in opposing muscle groups, then release it. The trick should be to focus on the triceps.”

You try it out once, managing a fairly weak but serviceable version of Saria's technique. It's actually amazing that you managed even that much on your first try... and it doesn't really suit you, you decide. But this isn't something that you intend to do. This isn't for you.

This is for Serana's benefit, and her benefit alone.

It takes you some time to figure out what Serana is actually doing... hours, in fact. But after a while you start to realize that she's multi-tasking: she keeps the book held fast in her hand, and you can watch even from a pace or two away as her muscles bulge and strain under her skin. First as single groups, causing her arm to strain and sway in a way that must make it hard to read. But then her arm grows still, as she clearly starts to flex and extend muscle groups in tandem.

After five hours of walking she's moved on past extending her muscles and into using her muscles to push against the muscles she's flexing with.

“So this is the capability of the former number Three,” you mutter, prompting a sidelong glance. “You're very systematic, Serana. It's a pleasure watching you work.”

She responds with a faint smile, and returns to her reading.

“So, you know what our mission consists of?” you ask.

She nods in confirmation.

“My own technique can kill without shedding blood,” you explain, “which is why I was selected for this mission. I think it would be better to let me deal with the infected locals.”

She glances back at you, no longer smiling.

“Don't give me that look,” you sigh. “I've given it a lot of thought, and it really doesn't seem like there's much we can do for them.”

Her brow furrows, and she shakes her head. She tucks the book under her arm and gestures for you to give you her hand.

YOU DONT BELIEVE THAT.

>What I believe is irrelevant. I realized there WAS something I could do to help you, this is NOT a similar situation.

“Do you know anything more about the situation than the basics?” you press. “Any new information from the last few days?”

Serana immediately shakes her head and runs a fingertip over your palm.

I HAD TO FIGHT FOR ANY DETAILS AT ALL.

“Same here,” you admit with a sigh. “Well you're right about one thing at least... I do think there's one way to save the other victims without spreading the contaminant... but I would need to isolate a few of them and test it systematically to know for sure. And even then I have no idea if it's survivable.”

THEN WE TRY IT.

“You sure about this?” you ask sternly. “We'd be defying the Organization's explicit orders, or trying to at least.”

She shakes her head, and traces her decision onto your palm.

I TRUST YOUR JUDGMENT.

“Then we'll try it,” you nod resolutely. “We'll need to isolate one civilian first, which shouldn't be all that difficult if the awakened being herself doesn't interfere.”

A nod from Serana shows you're both on the same page.

Two hours later you're looking down the valley at the town of Arbrau in the distance... even at this distance you can tell that there is quite a bit of yōki down there. Both an awakened being, and her victims who have been infected with her yōki-laden pheremones... or her poison, or whatever you're supposed to call it.

>Let's suppress our yōki as much as possible, try to blend in. See if there are any unaffected civilians.

Luckily, one of the crofts looking down into the valley has a single occupant: and that occupant happens to be afflicted.

“There,” you tell Serana, pointing the man out. “I'll hit him and sprint to the croft, get the door open. You come in behind and drag him after me. Got it?”

Serana nods resolutely.

The plan goes off without a hitch, a simple blow to the back of the man's head knocks him down before he even realizes you're there and you're off to the croft. You find the door unlocked, and get it open. But what you see inside stops you dead in your tracks, and Serana actually bumps into you in the doorway.

She looks at you with some indignation, until she peeks over your shoulder. Then she looks at you in obvious disgust.

Instead of going inside the croft, where the crofter has pried his wife's chest open and spread her constituent parts all over the single room. It's hard to spot a single surface that doesn't have bits of humanity smeared all over it.

“I'm not sure I should save this one,” you shake your head. “But we need to know whether this will work.”

Serana traces her thoughts against your arm.

DO YOUR BEST.

You nod in grim determination, ready to use your yoki to purge the contamination from his body.

You place your hand against the man's chest and push yōki into his body, slowly so as to avoid shocking his system. At a certain point the yōki concentration reaches the point where you can sense the contamination burning away, until you can no longer sense its presence.

“Alright, that should have done it,” you declare, halting your efforts and examining your handiwork.

The man's not breathing. His body is motionless and limp, and doesn't respond to anything you try to do to prompt a response from slapping him to pricking him with the tip of your sword.

Eventually, you have to admit to yourself that he's been dead for several minutes.

You slump against the base of the croft's wall, and Serana seats herself quietly next to you.

“I did everything exactly right,” you declare, as much to yourself as to her. “That was the bare minimum amount of yōki required to destroy the contaminants, nowhere near enough of a concentration to do anything serious to a yōma, or to a warrior.”

MAYBE IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE.

“Maybe,” you admit. “Yōki can have an impact on human tissue, we all know that much. Maybe enough exposure damages the nervous system, and that amount of intrusion just pushed the man's body beyond its breaking point.”

NOT YOUR FAULT.

“Yeah, I know.”

You do manage to find another isolated croft... and the story there starts the same. A man walking around listlessly and a woman's body torn to pieces and spread all over the inside of his home.

It ends the same way as well, with the man cleansed of the awakened being's yōki but effectively dead. And literally dead not long after that. Perhaps if you got to them sooner after infection it would have been possible to save them, but it seems too late now to reverse the process. And even if you could do so, you find it increasingly likely that there have been things happening in this town that your yōki control can't undo no matter how praiseworthy it is.

ANOTHER?

“No,” you shake your head. “No, I don't think so. We did what we could, more than was expected. But it's just not enough. We're too late... and judging by their actions they may as well be yōma themselves at this point.”

While she seems disappointed, Serana seems to accept your decision.

MORE THAN I WOULD HAVE OFFERED.

You hold still while she traces her thoughts against your skin.

“These beings behave as yōma, they carry yōki within their bodies, and we cannot change those facts,” you sigh. “Functionally speaking they are a type of yōma. As such, our only course of action is to purge this town of the yōma infestation and destroy the awakened being who created this situation.”

“Agreed?”

You turn to face your partner, who replies with a silent nod.

“Good. Then we target the lesser yōma first. The awakened being is using those for some purpose, disrupting that purpose should serve to either draw her into a confrontation or flush her out of hiding.”

AGREED.

When you reach town you don't have to wait long to run into the targets... they're out and about, leering at you menacingly. None of them use any actual words, in fact it seems as though they can't anymore. Based on the amount of dried blood you can see from the dusty streets there was a massacre here, anyone who wasn't infected was torn apart. It must have been horrific to witness.

“Well,” you mutter. “May as well start here.”

The mindless villagers lunge for you and Serana one or two at a time, easy prey for two seasoned Single-digit warriors. After a blow or two to the head you realize that even just punching them in the chest is sufficient to kill them, so you start swinging for any target area these poor bastards present to you. Meanwhile Serana effortlessly kills one after the other, her swordsmanship still keen despite having only the use of her off hand. That must be the power of an advanced offensive-type.

After slaughtering maybe two dozen or so, you finally catch sight of the perpetrator.

“You came at a good time,” the nude woman muses, walking towards you from what looked from here like the town's largest inn. “I was so bored I was about ready to take this whole town, try and get myself preg...”

Unfortunately, her pause is all too brief. “Hey, you do realize these are humans you're butchering?”

“Not anymore they aren't,” you assert. “Also, please stop talking.”

“Good heavens,” the awakened being sighs dramatically. “They're so boring to screw, they're lousy at fighting, and now they're not even any good as shields!?”

She notices one of the remaining infected men closing in on her, and when it starts grabbing at her she kicks it in the chest so hard its ribs cave in, sending it flying through a nearby window. “You're annoying!”

This... this thing disgusts you, at a deep and visceral level. And yet there's also something entirely too personal about it that bothers you, something that you could never mention to anyone that you know. There's no way to really know for sure, but you pray a silent prayer to the twin Goddesses that your mother put a little more thought and care into your conception than that.

Otherwise it might come to blows, and that wouldn't end well for you.

“I am really going to enjoy killing you,” you admit frankly. “Probably more than I should.”

And on that somewhat icky note, I've just about run out of steam.

I'll announce some time tomorrow what my plans look like in the week, but I may not resume until the weekend. So no promises.

Thanks for joining us, and see you next time!

Welp this Awakened being is a ho.

Not classy like mom at least tries to act lie.
>>
>>2856841
But how do we know that mom was only pure for dad?
>>
>>2856854
If she's immortal, then she doesn't need to be pure to one man in order retain the "classy" status, so long as the relationships do not overlap, have sufficient buffer time in between, and the man in question did not treat her like a ho and live to tell about it.
>>
>>2857015
Basically this.

Also Mom at least Tries to be classy. this one outright admitted to thotdom immediately.
>>
>Sure our mother eats people, but at least she's not a slut
Which, to be fair, this awakened being ALSO does.
>>
>>2857178
Ehhhh at least she's a classy humanitarian?
>>
>>2857178
Look that's just a given of the setting, the level of cumsluttery is unique per individual.
>>
>>2856854
>>2857178
SHE'S PURE FOR DAD BECAUSE SHE HAD US FOR A DAUGHTER.

>>2857212
clearly, this thot is a bigger cumslut with plebian tastes. Mom's got a better taste in debauchery.
>>
“I was so bored I was about ready to take this whole town, try and get myself preg...”
She was gonna say pregnant.
She basically tried to screw any and all people with an XY chromosome in order to try and be a mom.
As they say "it takes a village to raise a child", clearly she isn't doing it right.
>>
When did we become QQ? Not that I'm complaining lol.
>>
>>2857178
Yes, but given she seems to at least enjoy wine and other thing, I doubt she's as much of a brazen trollop as This one. Also she seems to put a lot more fore thought into what she does.

I am not necessarily saying she is better. In fact she could and likely is very much worse. However, her being an Abyssal one who is not pants on head evil from onset, no sluttier than a Bitch in heat means she's more palatable to deal with.

"QQ"? Whuzzat?
