/qst/ - Quests

Hello again fellow creators/questers. Today we will be continuing on in the Essari EvoGame World. For this thread we will be focusing on the ecological developments of present day Essari, rather than it's currently developing civilizations. Evolutions in these next two threads will have been endemic to Essari as of the last 30 million years having spawned as either speciations (region/habitat specific) or divergent evolutions, of already existing organisms on Essari.

As GM, I'll be actively observing the thread, making sure to catalog and note any new evolutions, as myself and you the creators help to flesh out the diversity of life on Essari, one biome at a time.

How to play:
• Select an extant organism, open an image of the species in MS Paint, Photoshop, etc; make an evolutionary change to that species, save as .PNG, and post it with a description about the evolution and why.
• Please indicate which extant organism your new organism derived from, the region it lives in, and any other important details about your organism.
• Details regarding an organisms size or name aren't necessary, but are heavily encouraged.
• Nothing too outlandish. The new organisms being introduced in these threads would be no more than 30 million years old.
• An example on how complex evolutions on an extant organism can be will be shown in a later post.

Notes:
• All organisms in these threads MUST have evolved from one of the extant organisms mentioned in the attached Dossier.
• Evolutions may include the developments of symbiotic relationships that can even be relationships created via domestication.
• Every 24-36 hours, I will be rotating the focus of evolutions into specific habitats where organisms may only be evolved for these habitats.
• Each ecosystem will include it's own size restraints for plants and animals as well as environmental complications that organisms will need to be specialized for.
• This is Thread 2 of 3 for the Essari Biodiversification Mini-saga

New to the Game?:
•The Essari series is now a multi-year saga entailing the development of life and now civilization on the world. The game has shifted towards a CivEvo centric game, but I'm leaving enough tools and information behind to allow new players to easily enter the world and make their own contributions to it.
• We have a Discord to keep you up to date on EvoGame stuff, and chat with other folks. https://discord.gg/kk8eJgJ
In order to save crucial Image space for new posts, the full resolutions images + the blank new organism template can be found in this gallery. (https://imgur.com/a/HnmWypv)
The world map and in-depth details on Essari's geography and habitats can be found here. (https://imgur.com/a/OcxFwrT)

Above is the comprehensive dossier detailing all the existing organisms of Essari, their range, and ecological niche. Information on the first round of evolutions in the next post.

--Habitat Focus: Global--
From Pole-to-Pole of Essari, there is scarcely anywhere on this humble planet where life has not managed to gain a foothold. From the deepest trenches of the ocean, to endless skies of Essari, to the many unique environments that are home to life on Essari. We have long been familiar with a cast of organisms that have for so long now been the commonplace occurence in their native ranges.

Now however, we are being introduced to a new cast of organisms that have long been around, but only now are being discovered. Previously we saw what life existed in the extreme and exotic climates of Essari, and through this thread will look at the unique life that flourishes in some the most rich and vibrant habitats on Essari. Today though we will be again focusing on the existence of life found in the many ecosystems of Essari that are only now being seen and detailed for the first time.

Come with us on journey. This is Planet Essari.

--Evolutionary Restrictions in Ecosystem--
• None. Any and all organisms are up to be evolved as seen fit by its creators. These organisms can exist from anywhere, and be any size, so long as its within the confines of an organism that evolved relatively recently.

((The following post is an example for just how complex evolutions derived from an extant species can be. Each of these new organisms have only come into existence in the last 30 million years. Also, I cannot stress enough that for any creators of new organisms to please, PLEASE use the full resolution image archive of organism illustrations that has been provided in the OP.))

The River Deral, now referred to as the Killideral has diversified into the many niches of its freshwater habitat.

The Raspjaw Deral has evolved into a tenacious predator of the Essari rivers and lakes. They thrive in the currents of lakes and high-energy rivers, feeding on Killideral and other small aquatic organisms. They use their lamprey-like mouths to tear and rasp flesh off of prey, often using their tusks to impale its prey, preventing its escape. These tusks as well as their bright coloration is also essential form establishing hierarchy and mating rights between Male Raspjaws.

The River Grazer Deral is an entirely plant- eating Deral. Its rotund body keeps them closer to bottom of riverbeds and lakes where they graze of aquatic plants. Their larger scooper-like mouths are adapted for ripping tougher plant fibers and even roots, allowing them to easily consume and entire plant. They are typically seen in large shoals, especially during mating season.

The Snagclaw Ankideral is a variety of Deral that taken to mostly skittering around on the bottom of river beds and near the river edge. They predominantly feed on whatever they come across, dead or alive. They are opportunist hunters, often hiding ubder rocks or sunken braffitree logs waiting for prey to wander too close. Their powerful claws are serrated inward, allowing it to entrap small prey easily, while its mouth located inside the claws begin feasting on the struggling prey.

The Trawljaw Deraddle is an enormous variant of the Deral often only seen in either lakes or slow moving rivers. Its mouth arms have become shorter, while its mandibles have splayed out into a filamentous seine. They typically swim near the water surface on sunny days feeding on zooplankton, loose algae, and other floating plants they favor. Its armored body is made of cartilage similar to a shark, which when Deraddles reach their adult size, this armor prevents predation from a majority of aquatic predators.

All of these organisms are endemic throughout the world just like the Killderal.

[These organism example were already posted in the previous thread, however they may of course be built off however a creator may please.]

the dark elf coin is a creature endemic to the entire planet. Aquatic, but a consummate air breather, the coins can be found near the surface of any body of water. Despite their "Odd" nature, stitchers found that they come in many varieties and fill their local waters; hence the name.

Content to eat microscopic organisms and scum that accumulates near the waters surface, they are often found near beaches feasting on sea foam.

Wildly colorful shells and edible meat make them a common catch and component of any sea food dish on Essari, regardless of race or region. The shell of the "Coin" is often used as decoration, or crushed and added as powder to concrete mixtures for strength and iridescent quality.

The shame tube is native to the continent of panoram, and was once a source of food for the nomadic tripods. As the race grew older, they developed a sense of empathy towards the reasonably intelligent creatures, despite their lethargic ways. It was eventually understood that perhaps it was wrong to eat them, but during the recent hard times, the consumption of their flesh as returned, quietly, to many of the poorer clans of bloodthroats. Thankfully it is a more civilized era, and the omnivorous shame tube is often processed into a paste, treated with salt and herbs, then dried into stick format and treated with zaibatsu tested, zaibatsu approved long life preservatives. No longer will you have to contemplate your own evolutionary history as you much on an ancestor to your own species. not at all. Thanks Zet!

There is concern amongst Cocky Tripod ecologists that the Shame Tube is at risk of extinction due to full scale industrial farming, and may vanish off the face of Essari within the next 30 years. Zaibatsu representatives claim this is preposterous, if they were so endangered, there would not be so many easily captured and rendered into fantastic snacks with a wholesome crunch that cannot be beat!

Nutritional facts: Each Tube snack contains at least 30% crude protein by volume.

First domesticated by the Tripods of the mountains of Panoram, but eventually spreading to Nihiloram, the Bebin Islands, Shatturne, Brouldia, Jobani and Foltania, the Household Camalo comes in all size and shapes, mostly due to selective breeding depending on the culture raising it, but also because it's plant-like nature lets it's owner trim and prune non-essential part's of it's body, shaping them to their will.

Pictured is the Bushdarian Great Vasebreaker breed, it's arm foliage has been trimmed to look like wings, and it's horns have been given shapes that would be useless in a natural enviroment. It's tail has become longer after centuries of selective breeding, and it's legs stockier and smaller. This breed of Household Camalo isn't very useful at most things, and works as a merely "cosmetic" pet, and has been outfitted with a traditional poncho from the Da'Wani steppes.
However, many much more industrious breeds exist, whether they're used to keep flufflord farms safe or used as unconventional beasts of burden.

The Degenerate Grabraf is one of the smallest known bipeds on the planet. When at rest it will default to a hunched 4 legged gait, but at any distance of moment the creature will ambulate on it's feet only. They communicate with each other via mimicry that changes daily based on observed environmental noises or behaviors. Extensive study has been poured into the diminutive creatures by the Voltanite Empire.

"3 years with Bi'BeBe" Covers the heart breaking journey of a junior researcher working with a captive bred and raised Degenerate Grabraf over it's 3 year natural life (nominally 1.5 years in the wild)

DGs have the highest brain to body mass ratio of any grabraf on the planet, and are correspondingly intelligent for their size. Highly adept at pattern recognition, near photographic memories and instant recall, in one day Bi'BeBe learned over 2000 words associated with images or other stimuli. Come sleep cycle, the DG had forgotten everything, including the researchers and reverted to a feral state. Each Bi'BeBe would demonstrate truly massive learning potential, and each night it would forget it all. Never anything beyond mimickry of observed behaviors or motions. Zas'Blya'mima-taz would go on to close out her notes "Though in the end, it is nothing more than a masterful mimic, is that not all any sapient is?" Most would disagree, but the sentiment was often well received, and for a time the DG was a popular pet.

Ultimately their total lack of long term memory doomed their popularity and eventually they faded into a brief fad within the empire. The military however persists in their use, training them to serve as living computers for guided munitions, or simply attaching incendiaries to their backs with a timer and brief training that a hostile force's symbology equates to food and petting.

The Steppes Aromashrub is an Aromatree Shrub relative that can be found both in Tripod Farms or growing in the wilderness. Unlike most members of the Aromatree family, this specimen breeds via spores and not fruits, growing numerous thin tendrills that get thick over time. During Autumn, it will stop breeding, and its tendrills will become much harder. These are chopped off and left to dry, and then turned into powder or flakes that are used as a staple spice in Kolla and other Grassland nomad cultures.

The Crawling Spikevine family is quite varied, some species are planted as ornamental runner plants, and can be found in many parks and monuments. All individuals however, have it's caracteristic "sawteeth" growing alongside the leaves of the plant, making it quite resilent in natural enviroments. Another trait shared through the family is the prescence of Anaglesic Alkaloids in the plant. Specific strains of Spikevines have been grown since antiquity because of this, with many shamanistic and medicinal connoctions being made from the roots of the plant. During the modern era, the chemical was succesfully identified and several types of medicine have been synthesized from it.

The Bronzebell Swamplily is a carnivorous freshwater plant found all over Panoram. It's "bell" is filled with chemicals that allow it to digest the different Crystal Mosquito and Jewol descendants that it lures using it's unique Biogenic Silica pods.

--Habitat Focus: Great Plains--
Vast open plains. Immense spaces which at may be filled with only an eerie silence. Yet any feeling of emptiness is an illusion, as it was in the verdant grasslands of Essari where Grabraf and Tripods alike rose to sapience. These great expanses of open plains support some of the greatest gatherings ever seen on Essari. At the heart of all that happens here is a single living thing. Grass.

The Essarian Grass, which are ubiquitous to nearly all terrestrial climates, thrive with nearly uncontested in the great plains of the planet. These grasslands exist where annual precipitation is not great enough to support a variety of plant diversity; with some of these grasslands stretching for thousands of miles over land. While every grassland is supported by the same kind of plant, each one these regions and the inhabitants that reside there experience an exposure to the elements unique to every great plain. From heat driven wildfires that burn uncontrollably over the grass steppes, to flash floods that transform lush lowlands into temporary wetlands; the one constant of these great plains that all life here depends on is the ever resilient Essarian Grass.

--Evolutionary Restrictions in Ecosystem--
• Extant organisms may be either migrant/nomadic organisms from neighboring habitats or spend the majority or entirety of their lives in the great grasslands of Essari.
• Since this is such a broad classification of a habitat, organisms can theoretically come from near any terrestrial habitats or even the freshwater habitat, but will need to be adapted to a variety of events including drought, blizzards, flooding, and inclement weather.

Habitat/Range: Coastlines; Endemic only to the Denui Island
Biology: - Carnivore

In some coastal regions where food is plentiful, Denui Terrortails were shaped by mating advantages over survival advantages. Longhorn Terrortails have underdeveloped acid glands to make room for larger jaw muscles and heavier 'tusks' which help them in violent mating disputes. Their hides are also thicker and more corrosion-resistant then other Terrortail species. Being larger, slower, and clumsier then other varieties of Terrortails, the Longhorn Terrortail sometimes resort to scavenging and cannibalism to round out their diet.

1- tasty leaf- A strain of the progenitor which has been bred for creating large, leafy greens. Popular as a salad, or used as the outer layer of a "sailor's wrap". Fermented and dried leaves will be used to contain chopped and fermented fish and pickled vegetables.

2- Big puff- A treat. Its a big puff. Immensely popular with children and the young at heart. It is also a useful source of immediate energy due to a mild methamphetamine like substance within it. So its also popular with everyone. One might say its actually quite addictive.

3-Emra's gift- A more reccent development created by generations of NG farmers. A Creating rows of easily carried puffs, the cylinder like puff pods are a popular street food. The stalk is so fiberous as to be inedible, but useful for textile or rope making.

4- Blackroot. cultivated by PGs for it's base form. The blackroot is a bitter, very spicy, licorice flavored plant that is mostly used for it's high starch and sugar content as a base for fermentation mash. While the grasses are useful for livestock feed (due to taste), it is the root where the value comes from, leading to a characteristic liquor as the end product.

the woodbeak feesh is one of natures little horrors. Spending most of it's life as a free swimming plant-fish, in the terminal phase of it's life the feesh will seek out beaches at the highest tides and launch itself into the sand beak first. It's body undergoes a rapid metamorphosis as it's face liquefies, nourishing roots that dig deeply into the soil. The Feesh at this point will wildly ejaculate a collection of gametes at night. Its not uncommon to see entire forests of these strange fish. The organism will repeat this process until it has burned through all it's energy reserves, at which point it's nervous system gives out and it ceases to have any pertinent function. Despite this the feesh will continue on for the better part of several decades if unperturbed, as a dedicated plant. Occasionally an eye will twitch or fin will wiggle as isolated clusters of nerves and muscle are slowly cannibalized by the rest of the organism.

--Habitat Focus: Jungles--
This is the planet's hothouse - the jungle, the tropical rainforest. Forests like the large tropic zone of Essari, where the densest concentrations of annual precipitation reach inland interiors of the planet. These rainforests make up nearly half of forests of Essari, and are believed to an overwhelming majority of all terrestrial life today. These sprawling climates are blessed with nearly daily rain, and balmy temperatures allowing for plant life to flourish and grow larger than anywhere else on the planet, with enough biomass and range both horizontally and vertically to support a plethora of life big and small.

Since these forests are often scarcely defined, the forests throughout Essari that are distinctly tropical are located on the continents of Jobani, Brouldia, Panoram, Foltania and the Torray Isles; in addition to the forests situated on the Floating Isles of Eysdrasil. Only the Northern parts of the Trium Rainforests in Panoram and the Sivec Forest of Northeastern Foltania are the only exceptions to this. These are believed to be some the most ecologically rich regions in Essari, and as such can support some the most unique and voracious organisms ever seen.

--Evolutionary Restrictions in Ecosystem--
• Extant organisms may be either migrant/nomadic organisms, an organis from a neighboring wet ecosystem, and/or live almost exclusively in the tropical forests of Essari.

Yet another carnivorous swamplilly descendant, the beartrap swampliliy's anatomy isn't too complicated. In it's center lays a bait, in the form of a big fruity organ in aquatic species and as a mass of nondescriptive colourful fleshy growths in the land species (complete with decaying meat odors). It's leaves are long and have hard "teeth" on their ends, if an animal tries to eat the bait, the leaves will quickly snap and close, crushing small prey and injuring larger organisms. The aquatic variant has a lilly that allows it to float on the water's surface. The plant's roots and leaves are capable of absorbing the bodily fluids of it's victims to nourish itself.

--Habitat Focus: Wetlands--
Perhaps one the most malleable and ever-changing features of the Essari biosphere. Wetlands make up nearly a quarter of the terrestrial habitats of the world. Some of these climates are the meeting point between the land and sea, such as the immense Trifolt Detla of Foltania, that stretches for over 2.4 million square kilometers. This and other estuaries where fresh and saltwater mix are the breeding ground and nurseries for a majority of aquatic and aerial organisms, as well as being acting as the great sponges of Essari, absorbing arsine and many sapient-made byproducts from the waters, thus purifying it.

Other more inland swamps and wetlands are the results of lowland basins that are either inundated by seasonal flooding; or are steeped in year-round precipitation and river runoff, creating a humid and wet climate where terrestrial and aquatic organisms are able to exist in a tentative harmony. Few sapients have yet to fully explore or even learn how to truly utilize the bounties found within Essari's wetland habitats, yet they are functionally one of the most ecologically significant features of the planet's biosphere.

--Evolutionary Restrictions in Ecosystem--
• Extant organisms must be either migrant/nomadic aerial or aquatic organisms, an organism from neighboring wet ecosystems and/or live their lives almost exclusively in the balmy wetlands of Essari
• Terrestrial organisms residing within this ecosystem must be adapted to potentially seasonal periods of drought or dryness, or be able to live a semi-amphibious lifestyle. Aquatic organisms must be adapted to brackish and potentially erratic changes in the water salinity.

Inksoil bees do a big ol' eusocial thing with a minority of females living in hives in the ground, both digging for food and being fed whatever the males find. Of the males, some are fertile and resemble regular Crysbees a lot, but many are born infertile due to a huge oversized inksac which they explode as a defense mechanism, killing themselves in the process - that is, if they are filled with ink. Often they're filled with blood they collected to feed the young or the females, in that case when they explode on a threat it just gets blood all over it.

the mudflopper is a missing link, a living fossil. It lives under the mud of the swamps and wetlands, breaths air, and has top mounted eyes that look to the world above it. truly majestic.

Mudfloppers descendants are mostly amphibians like it's predescesor. One important family contained within the Limuscrispicae superfamily are the skippers.
These fishlike creatures are able to live outside water or wet enviroments, as long as the atmosphere around them is humid. Their flopping frontal legs become much more articulate and rigid, and their tail divides into two pseudo-flippers used to skip around.

The Skipper has evolved into the wader; normally quadruped, in the water at waist high or deeper, it will walk and use it's forelimbs to grab unsuspecting prey as it eats them with a smile. the rear limbs have become slightly more rigid but are still modified flippers.

The Air Breathing Swinger is a Skipper descendant that migrated to the lush jungles and rainforests of Essari.
There they adapted to live atop the canopies of trees, where they would swing from branch to branch looking for food and mates. Their eyes move slightly more to the front in their skulls, and they develop a better sense of smell that allows them to identify their surroundings better.
These changes in behaviour have caused the animal to decrease greatly in size, and their coulouration becomes more brown, letting them blend in better with their surroundings and slightly comouflaging themselves as branches,

The biological adjustments done to the Forest Grabraf body had one unfortunate flaw: without constant upkeep, they tended to decay. While most Forest Grabraf whose augments had decayed have become nothing more than convulsing cancer blobs, a few have managed to luck out and get somewhat cohesive bodies.
Meet the Swamp Grabraf. A descendant of the Forest Grabraf, it leads a sedentary existence, using it's engorged, but utterly useless brain as a floatation device to stay on the surface of the filthy swamp water as it endlessly thrashes it's useless limbs around in pure ecstasy.
The Swamp Grabraf is fed and pollinated by the Feral ServoBee. A descendant of the Biocon inc. ServoBee(tm), it incorporates features from too many different species to pin down it's true ancestry. The creature is equipped with three grabbing appendages, one feeding appendage, a pair of wings, a pair of eyes and a single antenna. While originals were often stored in specially designed compartments inside a Grabraf or a construct's body, their wild descendants make their homes in the brain tissue of their host, feeding on the highly nutritious grey matter and laying their larva among it.

--Habitat Focus: Seasonal Forests--
Forests are the among the most abundant ecosystems on Essari after the grasslands that stretch over the land. Just past the tropics of Essari where the near eternal summer reigns, deciduous and coniferous woodlands that grow in the more seasonal regions of the planet are among some of most extensive forests on Essari. Many of these habitats makeup the majority of some landmasses, with the Be'nasir Forest in Moralve covering over a million square kilometers of land. Temperate forests such as this one and all others combined produce more than a quarter of the planet's oxygen, replenishing the atmosphere almost annually. Additionally, these seasonal forests are bless by almost the same quantity of precipitation as their tropical rainforests near the equator; although these forests typically experience more sporadic rainfall throughout each season.

The seasonal forests of Essari experience year-round changes in temperature and weather, with season opening up to different cast of organisms native to these forests. Each season brings hardship and opportunity of which every living thing, specialist and generalist alike take opportunity to revel in the seasonal bounties. Today's habitat focus will be looking at the unique temperate forests found across Essari's temperate zones, and the organisms that live there. This also includes the Floating Isles of Reido'ya and Ulordrasil.

--Evolutionary Restrictions in Ecosystem--
• Extant organisms must be either migrant/nomadic aerial organisms or species adapted to living year round in the temperate forests of Essari.
• Organisms that are not acclimated for the broad temperature variances seen in these climates must either have another native habitat they retreat during what would be a harsher season for them, or are capable or hibernating during the colder months.
• Plant Size Cap at 26.
• Animal Size Cap at 18.
• We will be switching to the next habitat focus in 48 hours
Please use the Dossier pdf in the OP to find out which organisms are traditionally found in the Forest ecosystem and use the Imgur Gallery link POSTED HERE to get you high res images of each organism. (https://imgur.com/a/HnmWypv)

--Addendum to Evolution Rules--
• All previous Habitat Focuses will remain open for use with their aforementioned rules and restrictions for the duration of these threads.
• Organisms under the Pole-to-Pole Habitat focus may now only be 1 size larger or 3 sizes smaller than their predecessors.
• Domesticated organisms may only be 2 sizes larger or 5 sizes smaller than their predecessors.
• Please tag which the Habitat Focus for new organisms from this point forward, regardless of if its this current habitat focus, or any of the previous focuses.

Biological shitposting. Sometimes in nature, you can have convergent evolution, or mimicry for the sake of survival. In the seasonal forests, many creatures look the same. This makes the forests very hard to penetrate for outside organisms that would seek to establish or invade a niche.

today we explore a microcosm of that.

the carnivorebois get shel breakers to kill the herbies with

The herbies start climbing because fuck that can't get me when I'm way up

The scavengers want more food and so they make their own carion: Not by hunting, but by producing a necrotizing substance ander their mandibles with which they make parts of host animals into food.

Carnivores become faster to catch prey near them, with better articulation for grabbing and hugging.

Herbivores get girthier and bigger from a better lifestyle with lots of food and no need to stop eating.

Bzols are assholes who like to cling on now, and cant be easily shaken off anymore.

3 Spikes
4 Extra Armor
5 Long limbs
6 improved intelligence (pack hunter/ pack living)
7 Gliding capability

Carnivores grow larger still and get a tail for navigation and hitting.

They need a weapon with a bit of range because Herbies have developed their helmet into a hammer which they can pretty mcuh kill Grubby pouchy tails pretty relyably. The tail helps, but Pouchy's have to compensate with size, which reduces their possible population sizes.

Now that they're so large, the Bzol take the Grubbys as hosts, developing a barbed sting with which to sink themselves into their victim, necrotizing their flesh and slurping the smoothie
