Previously on Shadowrun AU...

You are William "Fenris" Grimm, Human Adept and currently in a SNAFU of epic proportions. Twenty four hours ago, you met your crew, Jules "Mercury" Crowley, motormouth extraordinaire and Shaman, 'SS', self-proclaimed best rigger in all of West Coast and owner of Brynhildr, a heavily modified GMC Bulldog. And last but not least, 'Mustang', a Combat Adept with more blades and secrets than yourself.

Following a milkrun involving gangers and a drug dealer, you picked up a mysterious commlink. Intending to sell it for extra nuyen, instead you stumbled upon a political drekkstorm that could envelop the whole of Seattle. After an ambush at a diner and a drekfest at Fort Lewis Zoological Garden, you're made acutely aware of the factions who are very much interested in what's in your hands and are willing to kill for it. Currently, you're back in Crowley's Renton Safe-house in an upper-mid class neighborhood waiting on a call from the Ork Underground to offload the 'hot potato' that's painting a target on all of your backs.

You're deciding on a plan to meet while waiting for the follow-up from Ork Underground. Choices so far as discussed are as followed

Location:
>Snohomish - Breadbasket of the Emerald City. Its rural area allows multiple exits and the relative lack of gangs makes it one of the safer choices for a face-to-face meet. Cons, it also makes the meet fairly close to Brackhaven's home.

>Renton - One of the two Seattle Barrens, its lawlessness means that Brackhaven can't leverage his KE pawns to bust the meeting. Cons, it's the Barrens. You're more likely to be jacked by random gangs on the way to the meet and no one sane would choose suicidal spots like Glow City.

>Puyallup - The other Seattle Barrens, SS' home turf gives you excellent egress points should things go sideways. Cons, its also home to the Ancients, a vicious Elf gang.

>Downtown - The center of Seattle's Megaplex, it's public and least likely for overt action by Brackhaven and his goons. Cons, you're also close to the Seattle Underground, whose main entrance lies there.

>Bellevue - Seattle's Financial District. The dizzying amount of A, AA, & AAA megacorps means that you can escape the KE if needed via passing through the various jurisdictions. Cons, you'll draw megacorp attention.

>Tacoma - Seattle's Transport Hub. Sea-Tac & Charles Royes Station have good public cover and a bustling crowd during day and night. Cons, lot's of public witnesses.

>Everett - Seattle Port. Some of the abandoned warehouses make excellent places to make deals so long as you set up shop first. Cons, UCSAN patrols the waters heavily and their main naval port is 15 minutes away for any major emergencies.

>Outremer - As far as you can get from Seattle Megaplex and still be considered part of it. Its distance means that it's pretty hard. Its islands are isolated and the only land routes are a few bridges. Cons, distance.

Time:
>Day - Pros; Better vision, more public witnesses, less likely to be hit by gangs. Cons; KE pawns have more authority to arrest you in public.

>Night - Pros; Less likely to be caught by Pawns, easier to set up. Cons; More likely to be hit by roving gangs, Brackhaven's hitsquad can move freely.

Supporting this, the crowds can help buy us time to get away if there's a shootout. And because it's a transport hub, it'll mean that there's a good chance we can lose most pursuers.

I'm weary of doing it in avery crowded area, we won't be able to crowd control and hitman can hide among everyone

We won't have to worry about dekkers or colateral damage, we can escape in Britney easely and set up some killzones with SS and Boudi while we close the deal

= = 0055Hrs. March 6th, 2075 = =

You were on your third poker round with Crowley & SS when you hear your commlink chirp, and you see you have an incoming call from an unfamiliar number. Answering it, you see an attractive female dwarf of Amerind heritage. Her black hair is feathered with dark red highlights, and she wears a Mortimer of London longcoat.

“Hi, I’m glad you’re still alive! Okay, maybe not the best way to start a conversation, but I really am! I understand that Seth Dietrich’s commlink found its way into your possession. If you didn’t know, I think that Dietrich has the dirt on Kenny Brackhaven that we need so we can see that Humanis loving pig hang once and for all. Project Freedom’s willing to pay a lot to get our hands on that data. Even better than the money, though, the Ork Underground would owe you a big favor, and so would I.”

What say?

Maybe not. Project Freedom was a group that wanted to make the Ork Underground a formal district of the Seattle Metroplex. They were formed out of MOM and ORC. We need confirmation from SS that his contact is working with Project Freedom and Proposition 23 supporters.

"Who are you and how did you get this commcode?" You ask immediately.

The dwarf answers, "Umm, I'm Eliza Bloom, the one who ran against Brackhaven for Seattle governorship last year."

"And got heavily curb-stomped, to put it midly," says Crowley in a low tone.

Bloom continues, "Anyways, I got your commcode from a friend of a friend, who told me to say 'Mi sésata an koming bossmang kapawu,' I don't know what that means though."

Dammit Tiga, you thought.

"I do know though. How much is this 'Project Freedom' offering?"

"80,000¥ upfront once we confirm it's really Dietrich's commlink."

SS scratches his chin, "Krug did say he was working closely with someone helping the OU, I don't know whether if its Bloom, but Bloom's got a solid rep amongst the OU, even if she's a dwarf."

"Pass me the link," Crowley says.

Tossing the link, you continue listening in. "Evening, Ms. Bloom. I'm a very good mate to the one who you've been speaking to. May I call you, Eliza, luv?" Crowley says.

"You may..." Bloom says with uncertainty.

"Well, you see, me mate had just spent the last few days hounded by Brackhaven's fascist pigs and goons. It's not easy staying one step ahead, and it's really eating into his well-being." Crowley plays his charm. "Wouldn't you say a hundred kay nuyen be suitable compensation?"

"But, but...Eighty thousand is the best we can scrape up with...And that's all we can scrape together right now." Bloom splutters.

"A pity then," Crowley sighs. "The other offers were much higher."

"Wait! Um...We're very well connected. We could allow you access to our shadow-networks and stuff. There's a lot of shadowrunners and their support network who would be happy to do you favors in exchange."

"Sorry", Crowley sounds apologetic. "Not good enough,"

"Um...um..." She breaks off for a few seconds and you could hear a fast-paced conversation in the background. Bloom came back quickly, "You know that Project Freedom has lots of very important people with us, right?"

"Yes, Eliza luv. And?"

"And Seattle's DA Miss Oaks is willing to give a one-time favor in any case that involves your friend." Bloom says.

Crowley nods. Still on the commlink with Bloom.

Mustang says, "It's the right thing to do"

"Pass the 'link, Mercury." You say.

You grab the 'link Crowley tosses to you. "Ms. Bloom," you say, "We have a deal."

"Great!" Bloom exclaims, "So when and where do we do the meet?"

"Snohomish," you say, referring to the plan you hashed out while waiting. "There's an abandoned farm there we could meet at. Time is twelve noon at March 7th. You have a fifteen minute window. Don't be late."

"Understood. On behalf of the people of Seattle, thank you." Bloom says solemnly. The line goes dead as she hangs up.

You decide to talk to Crowley, who is as much as an enigma as the day you first met.

Crowley is by the fridge in the kitchen. "Bollocks," he curses. "Nothing but American swill. What I'd do for a proper pint."

"Not you though," he looks up at you. "No offense, but I'd prefer a proper meal first."

"What? No, I just want to get to know you better." you protest.

Crowley stares into his beer can, "As much as I like the spotlight mate, me last crew didn't fare so well under my leadership. Hence the term 'radioactive' potato. I'd much rather be worried about how'd I look or how ta get a fine lass or lad to be up for it over whether me mates about to go on a suicide mission. Besides, you're doing a bang up job so far mate. I told you I had an eye for good people."

"What do you think about what happened back there at the zoo?"

"Honestly? Probably some convoluted corporate deniable ops gone wrong. Doesn't take two brain cells to rub together that bloke you met was probably Dietrich who had taken far too many BTLs and had taken on one of his BTL personas."

Crowley tosses the empty can, "Well, that's enough soul staring mate. See you in the morn." And he heads towards the second floor.

"Good thinking," you say. "I'll leave it to you then."

You're in the cabin of an Ares Dragon. Illuminated by the eerie red glow of night lights, are your men, dressed in jungle camouflage, soft hats and camouflage face-makeup. A Troll, who's carrying the squad's HMG, takes out a wad of tobacco and offers it to the rest of the men. One of the Orks, examining his Colt M23, declines, "Damn Rex, get that stinkin' thing out of my face!" Rex laughs and just pops the wad into his mouth, "Bunch of slack-jaw faggots around here! This stuff'll put hairs on your chest." He slaps his chest, "Makes you a goddamed sexual ty-ran-toe-sore-ass...just like me." The men hollers and hoots.

You turn to your LT, an elf. "Dylan, what's the sitrep?" You yell over the cacophony of the heli's rotors. Dylan replies, "HQ confirmed the HVT is onsite. Extraction will be confirmed once we cleared an LZ."

"Alright," You turn to the troops. "Listen up, men!"

"You know our target. He's now down there with a shit load of army regulars. Sergeant Rex! I want you to put that HMG for suppressive fire. LT, you'll lead second squad to cut off the compound's exit. We'll hit them hard, we'll hit them fast. They'll feel like one of the girls Rex's too drunk to notice they're boys." The men hollers even louder. "Hooah!"

"30 SECONDS TO LZ! GUNS GOING HOT!" The buzzsaw of the Dragon's gatlings rips open, giving life to its namesakes. The bay door opens and you could see a colonial mansion on top of a hill in the middle of a jungle, fires spreading sporadically across it. As you and your men exit the dragon, an alarm start blaring. "MISSILE LOCKED ON, BRACE. BRACE. BRACE." You've managed to barely clear the Dragon before it explodes, the shock-wave propelling you forward even further and knocking you off your feet.

As you lay concussed on the yard and you could hear the sound of your men screaming around you, a blurry figure approaches you and starts reaching for you.

You draw your knife, knowing that one of your men would've at least called you out.

With a flash, you swiftly drive your knife into the target in front of you, only to be swatted aside and put into a reverse chokehold. You try to elbow the person but the hold refuses to budge. "WILLIAM!" You hear a female voice calling out. You struggle a bit more.

"WILLIAM!"

"WILLIAM!"

"WAKE UP"

Here we have the classic video gamer who's never used a shotgun in the wild.

"WAKE UP!"

You're back in your room. It's a mess, torn bedding, partially destroyed night stand. You look up at the figure holding you in the choke-hold. It's Mustang, "Tap twice if you can hear me."

Running out of breath, you comply. She lets go immediately, backs off, and goes into a low stance. You take a few moments to catch sweet, sweet air. "What...cough...happened?"

Mustang replies, "Tried to wake you." She lowers her hands, "What did you think happened?"

Huh. If we were potentially part of an Ares Firewatch Team, should we get checked out for cortex bombs or other implants?
We should probably assume they've already got blood and hair samples for sympathetic rituals against us. So it would be important to hide our identity even more than usual.
>>
>>2821045
we have essence 6 and that we can't fake or forget if we had some cortex bomb our adept magic would be weaker
>>

Cortex bombs have no listed Essence cost in SR5, and it's noted that they're implanted via non-invasive nanosurgery.
But they take up Capacity if installed in a pre-existing cyberlimb.
I haven't seen rules for that, though it seems similar to the Tooth Compartment, which has no Essence Cost either.

"I remembered something..." You massaged your neck. "I was with my men, extracting...Extracting the tar..." Your head burst into a million pinprick stars.

"ARrrRGh!" You can't think. You can't feel anything else but agony.

Mustang quickly approaches and mounts you. She puts her hand on your forehead and whispers. Your headache and hyper-ventilation slowly subsides. She turns your head and looks into your eyes. You never notice her eyes shine like gold.

"Grimm, mate. Wakey, wakey. Daylights' a wasting." Crowley enters the room. He sees Mustang on you, room in ruins. "My bad," He slowly backs up. "Sorry to disturb the lord and lady."

= = 0831Hrs. March 6th, 2075 = =

You're slightly nursing your head, the headache not entirely dissipated from your morning episode. Crowley, now spotting another shiner courtesy of Mustang, is still grinning like a bastard. SS is just downing on his third espresso shot, while monitoring the drones he deployed around the house. Mustang is cleaning the plates from breakfast.

"Ehem," You cleared your throat, "We have twenty four hours to get ready for the meet. So what's the plan?"

Crowley says, "I'll be heading to the farm, just surveying the place so we don't get ambushed ourselves mate."

SS answers, "Like I said, Crime Mall. The drones are gonna need the upgrade and I might score some sweet new gear that we could use."

Mustang says, "Guard here" And gives the evil eye to Crowley.

"SS, do you mind me joining you? I may need some new gear as well." You say.

SS nods, "Grab your gear, we're leaving in 15mins."

Crowley finishes his kaf, "I'll be on my way then."

You turn towards Mustang, "Get Boudicca to assist you once her arm is fixed, if necessary. We'll too be on comm at all times." She nods in acknowledgement.

"Larry, Moe, & Curly can help with surveillance, just make sure you have this on you to prevent tripping the alarms." SS says as he passes a tag to Mustang.

Grabbing your dufflebag and gear, you toss them into Brynhildr's rear cabin and joined SS in the passenger seat. SS turns to you, "Ever heard of Trog Rap, Doom Metal, Retro Rock, or Technohex?"

You're not even sure that some of them are genuine music genres. "Uh...No?"

SS splits into a smile, "Then you're going to love this." He turns on Brynhildr's sound system and accelerates off from the underground garage.

After an hour of blinding speeds and death defying misses in urban shortcuts, you've arrive in front of a rundown three story mall that's been condemned. Rubble lies around with the occasional stray dog scurrying around the place.

"This is Crime Mall?" You ask, "Doesn't look like much."

SS turns to you, "Just wait a bit. Despite what Crowley tells you, looks aren't everything to runners, chummer."

The ground jolts, and you see Brynhildr is lowered into a recess in the ground. SS turns on the headlights and slowly drives forward. A few seconds later, you arrive in a dimly lit underground parking lot with a bored looking Troll. SS parks in one of the empty bays and says, "Few rules here at the Crime Mall. Rule number one, caveat emptor. Rule number two, all grievances are settled outside Crime Mall, no exceptions. Rule number three, your stuff gets jacked, management won't do shit. So you have to secure your own shit. Got it?"

You nod. SS just grunts, "Then let's go"

SS leads you up the stairs, the exit obscured by the bright light. When you exit the stairwell and your glasses adjust, you see the interior of the busiest mall in Seattle. Trolls rubbing shoulders with Elves rubbing shoulders with Orks and every meta combination you can think of. The cry of food hawkers yelling out their menu of the day and people haggling with vendors in the shop lots.

"This way," gestures SS with his thumb. You follow him, being aware of pickpockets and trying to avoid bumping into people. As you walk on, the crowd thins out and the shops began to look a little more run down.

SS stops in front of a rundown shop, its shutters pulled down, and the sign flashing "Orlov's Expendables" You raised your eyebrows at SS. He replies, "Yup, this is the place," and proceeds to smash his fist on the shutters. "ORLOV, IT'S TEN AM! OPEN YOUR DAMNED SHOP, YOU LAZY HALFER!"

SS replies, "It's Wednesday, you drunk walking breathing stereotype."

"Is it now?" Orlov scratches his chin. "Well, come." He waves you all in. Inside his shop, it feels more like a dive bar in the Barrens rather than a shop. Orlov swipes of a couple of empty bottles off his shop counter/terminal, "Who's new meatbag, tovarich?" He cocks head to SS.

"A friend, Orlov." SS says. "Also, a brand new customer for you."

Orlov gives you a once-over, "Huh, don't look like much." He bends down, tossing out more junk below the counter, before pulling out a flask that looks a lot older than the UCSA. "Here, drink like a true tovarich."

You take the flask and take a sip. The first taste feels like liquid fire. The next second, your throat's on fire and the world begins to spin. You hold your ground and start to swallow while SS looks on you with horror at the beginning and respect at the end.

"Huh, maybe white capitalist is not weak after all," snorts Orlov. "Maybe inside you is a comrade waiting to come out, eh Tovarich?"

You can't answer, still trying to cool down the fire in your gut.

"Heh," Orlov smiles. He turns on the terminal and panel in his counter. "Here, tovarich. Look at what you need while I bring tovarich SS to his baby Mule."

"You drunk bastard," replies SS. "It better be ready." Orlov just gestures SS to follow him into the back.

We didn’t even get the gun and ammo that would have given us a non-lethal option, which we’re lacking. The rifle and shotgun use our Longarm skill, which is 5 points worse than our pistols and Automatics skills.

"Hey, Orlov!" You yell. "Where's the gear I just bought?"

"No worries, tovarich. Someone will bring goods to Tovarich SS' ride, yes? Much safer than walking in Crime Mall carrying all of it, no?" Orlov replies while coming out the back with SS.

You look towards SS for confirmation. SS says, "That's the way here, omae. Lotta merchants would sell fools one thing, then set their thugs to "relieve" them of their purchases. Orlov's one of the better ones. Right?" He turns towards Orlov.

Orlov just shrugs, "That's only because you're a repeat tovarich, SS. Now go. My headache's getting back." He chases both you and SS out of the shop before slamming the shutters shut.

"Anything else you wanna get while we're here?" You ask SS. He answers, "No, the Mule's pretty much what we need."

"Alright, let's head back." You say, "I'm getting worried about leaving the 'links alone with only Mustang guarding them."

As you and SS make your way back to the parking lot to Brynhildr, a small commotion blocks your path.

Alongside the narrow corridor, several elves have taken up space, drinking from beer bottles and cans, and chatting away. You notice they're wearing biker leathers, with mohawks of every hue and color, and most importantly of all, armed. Their current attitude might be just punkish and the general attitude of rebels against the world, but one of them wore the eyes of an alpha, constantly sweeping for either rivals or prey.

"Ancients," whispers SS. "Drekkin' go-gangers this side of the Barrens."

Trying not to draw attention, you ask in a low tone, "So pass or confront?"

"Your call, Fenris. Just remember Rule Two, these gangers aren't worth getting banned from here."

"Agreed," you say. "Lead on."

As both of you turn to leave, your senses go into overdrive as the elf with the predator eyes stare a hole into your back. Ignoring the provocation, you continued head on and deeper into Crime Mall's labyrinthal corridors.

= = 1137Hrs. March 6th, 2075 = =

After almost an hour of detouring to avoid the Ancients, you've finally returned to Brynhildr. There, foot tapping is the same troll guarding a drone with several crates strapped to it. As you and SS approached closer, the troll stares at SS, a vein popping out of his forehead, "Drekkin' SS! Yer late! I ain't no goddamn drone-sitter!"

SS shrugs, "My bad, Carl. You know how it is at Crime Mall, I ain't looking for trouble."

"Well, ye 'not lookin' fer trouble' is wastin' mah valuable time!" yells Carl.

Sighing, SS fishes out a credstick, "Here." Carl catches it mid-air and examines it. "You know it'd be a lot easier if you weren't being a drekkin' drama queen about it, Carl."

"Aye. But where's the fun in that SS?" Carl laughs while pocketing the credstick. "Y'all best be careful," he turns solemn. "The Ancients are getting restless around here."

"Thanks." SS says, "Fenris, help me load this Mule."

You comply, "What's with Carl?"

"A small game to pass the time, and the fact that Carl's also Management helps. A lot." SS whispers to you.

A detail that's worth remembering, you decide to file away for a more opportune time.

Puyallup, unlike its sister Redmond Barrens, used to be farmland for Seattle. However, thanks to the Night of Rage and the subsequent decades where refugees leftover from the balkanization of the old United States settled in, dilapidated buildings and squatter shelters dot the landscape in irregular densities. Still despite it's relative open air, the air around still feels claustrophobic and oppressive.

You notice that unlike the drive into Puyallup, the streets are even more scarce of pedestrians now. Inhabitants quickly scurrying away and closing their bolted windows shut.

"Uh, SS. You noticed that?" You ask.

"Yup, things are about to heat up, get on the gun." SS says.

Just as several squatter shelters explode into elves on the meanest cycles you've seen so far.

Smoke nade in front of us near a turn.
Break hard in smoke.

Maybe get a motorcycle to crash into us. At the very least some of them might over or undershoot.
We could even use the smoke to pull off a bootlegger reverse and get more distance.
