Magic, curses, hexes, sigils, spirits, prayers, incense, divinity, charms, wands, demons, and herbs—there lies a world hidden right underneath your nose, a reality shrouded before the eyes of all, a muddled blend of fact and fiction that yet to be illuminated upon.

And for this the Mokuzoutoshi High School’s Occult Club was established, so that humanity can discover the truth once more!

Okay, that’s a lie.

It’s more like a “Manga Research Club”, except there’s video games and snacks too. The “Do Nothing Club” also fits. You actually don’t care about this kind of junk at all, but you were dragged into the club’s creation by a painfully insistent friend.

But for all the mysteries encountered in the time you spent wasting your school life away, there is one thing you know for certain—who’s waiting when you turn open the door to the club room. Which is to say, no one, obviously. You’re always the first one in.

Your name is Ryuuta Tsubame, a 2nd year student and Vice-President of the Occult Club, and today, you find the door already unlocked.

For the first time, you see someone already inside. Sleeping, in fact, with her head resting on her arms atop a table.

Nemuri Ensei, a 1st year student, though sometimes she sure doesn’t act like one.

You sigh. “Cutting class? Come on.” The year’s barely started too.

You cross your arms, waiting for her to get up. But she doesn’t. Is she pretending?

Sometimes you think she’s beyond help.

A thought goes through your head like a bolt of lightning. What if... you patted her head?

Your hand slowly descends, and right before you do something terrible, you lightly karate chop her instead.

She makes out a squeak that makes you pause when you draw your hand away.

You say, “What are you doing?”

“Resting my eyes,” she replies. Nemuri sits up, giving you an annoyed stare. “Good morning, senpai.”

“It’s the afternoon!” you reply, “Didn’t you have class?”

“It was home economics, so it’s okay,” she answers. And then she yawns. “Can you get me something to drink? I’m thirsty.” You hope this doesn’t become a habit.

With a weak sigh, you make your way over to the fridge. It’s a small one, and it sits in the corner beside the cabinets—read: bookshelves—and a woven straw mat that’s too large for the room so it partially curls up one of the walls.

You’re surprised she even joined in the first place, though it’s probably because of the urging by her brother, who’s actually the club advisor. Except he never shows up. And either of them somehow care less than you do.

You hold two cold soft drinks in your hands.

Walking by, you bring one of the drinks to the back of her neck. She yelps, and then another annoyed glare. You leave it in front of her and pull out a chair. She doesn’t ask why. Obviously she already knows. Sometimes things don’t need to be said out loud.

She holds her expression while she opens it and takes a reserved sip. Quiet, as neither of you say a word.

This mental battle is getting taxing.

Finally, Nemuri changes the subject, “They’re late.”

“Not sure about Hinami, but Miku’s out to buy this month’s rations.”

“Can you not say things like that? I’m already embarrassed telling people I’m in an ‘Occult Club’.”

Before you can answer with a resounding “no,” the sound of hurried footsteps turns your attention away.

“Oh, speak of the devil,” you say.

“I got it!” Miku says, barging through the door with a plastic bag in her hand. All sorts of junk food and sodas stick out of it, made all the more visible with her raising it into the air to show it to you two. “This month’s Suion magazine! I’ve been waiting all this time ever since that demon lord cliffhanger,” she says, practically skipping in happiness.

That’s Miku Seizanigami. You’ve known her for... how many years now? And she’s barely changed.

You remember it clearly, the day that she finished a certain game and decided the make the club on pure whim. It was better than the Going Home Club, sure, but that’s a low standard. The fact that she got three other people to agree was a pure miracle.

She drops the bag on the table, pulls out the sodas with a hand, and goes over to the fridge.

She cries out, “Hey, who took the last cola?”

Nemuri wastes no time pointing in your direction. You reply, “You took it too!”

“I wanted one first, you took the other,” she counterattacks.

It’s a critical hit. You stagger, not knowing what to do next.

Then, you spot it; Miku’s eyeing yours that you haven’t opened yet.

...Is she going to pounce at you?
>Drink out of it before she can get it!

You glance from her, then to you.

There’s only one thing you can do.

You open it and drink it, throwing your head back so you can get a mouthful. With a smug grin, you look back at her—

She already closed the distance; she’s so fast! The cola is out of your hand in one second and a chilled bottle of green tea replaces it right after.

And then she carelessly drinks the cola.

You feel the temperature of your face rising, so you turn away to hide it. Miku isn’t fazed at all.

What is she, daft?!

“Thanks!” she says, “I’ll let you read the magazine first in return.” You mumble something unintelligible in reply while Nemuri watches you blankly. Miku looks around. “Where’s Hinami? I don’t think we can wait too long.”

“I don’t know,” Nemuri replies. “What’s happening?”

“The Student President said she needed to talk, so maybe all of us should be together. Oh, what about the club advisor?”

Nemuri shakes her head. “He’s busy... I think.” He’s always busy.

You collect yourself well enough to speak.

“Eh?” Miku exclaims, “What if she comes right as you leave and you miss her?”

“Then message me,” you reply, “Does she know about the Student President thing?”

“I passed by her during lunch and told her then, which makes this all the more mysterious,” she replies. “Do you think the toilet ghost got her?”

“The wha...? Okay, forget it, I’m going.” You exit the room.

Only, she shouts to stop you. “Wait, what about the magazine?”

“Go read it!” you return in kind, not even bothering to stick your head back in to tell her.

A few minutes later and you think you saw someone passing by. Oh well.

After a difficult search and in an unused classroom, you find certain death waiting for you. A demon ritual must be taking place; it’s the only way to explain the black curtains and things that decorate the room. Is that an animal skull hanging in the back? Three of them. You don’t want to know.

The person who you were looking for spots you, turning around to give you a wave and a smile, urging you to come in. “You’re early. How did you find me?”

Hinami Kotobato, 3rd year student and the only one who actually gets excited about club-related things. You feel sorry for her sometimes because she’s surrounded you and the other two. No one deserves that. But she seems happy, so who are you to stop her?

“We were waiting for you... no, wait, what’s this?!” you say, stopping. “What are you doing?”

“Atmosphere! Miku said we were having an Occult Club meeting, and that today was an important day, so I thought I’d set things up. I managed to get permission to use the room for today. I’m almost done too.” Hinami’s practically glowing, so much that you don’t want to shut her down.

You hesitate.

“This is amazing. I’ll bring the others,” you say, and she lets out a silent cheer.” You take out your phone to see that it’s been in silent the entire time. Uh. Oops. There’s a RAIN notification, a message from Miku:

>she’s here, what are you doing?!?!
>i don’t want to be yelled at alone!!

You reply.

>Nemuri’s there

She answers.

>she’s deflecting everything to me
>it’s as if she isn’t even there
>send help

Oh, this is great.

>You know that room on the third floor of the main building? The one beside the supply closet
>Come here, and bring the President here too

It takes a minute for a response to come.

>are we kidnapping her??

You pause. At first you think it doesn’t even warrant an answer, but then you think that might be considered as a yes. You reply with a simple “no” and wait inside with Hinami.

The room gives you the creeps.

You try to... undo the mood. “So, were you planning on sacrificing the President's soul to the demons, or...”

“...The President? I thought we were summoning an evil spirit.”

Wow, Miku.

The evil spirit makes itself known.

She opens the door with a force of a beast and strides in. If she could read your mind and heard that, you’d definitely be killed.

Hanako Kainaka, the Student Council President, instantly stops when she sees what’s inside, and Miku and Nemuri almost run into her back.

Taken aback, she asks, “What’s this?”

Miku and Nemuri have the same expression, but at least they know how to play along.

Miku practically leaps to Hinami’s side. “Wow, this is incredible! Where did you get these candles? I knew you could do it!”

To which Hinami answers, “I-I have some at home...” There’s a tint of red to her cheeks.

Hanako crosses her arms. She has a stern face, one that seems to be perpetually stuck. “You’re all not planning on doing something like burning down the school, are you?”

“W-what? No!” Hinami says, tensing up, “Nothing like that!”

Miku answers for her. “Ahem,” she clears her throat, trying to redirect Hanako’s attention. “Like I was saying, we are doing something!”

The student council president frowns. “I meant doing something for the school. We’re giving you all this money and you’re spending it... doing what exactly?”

Miku has no idea, so she can’t answer. Nemuri does, instead. “Obviously demon summoning—“ It’s as if she’s about to say something like “it worked”, but she clamps her mouth shut just in time.

“In any case, you have to produce something. Anything tangible.” She sighs heavily. “Look, I’m giving you all a second chance, okay?” Hanako glances at you. “Don’t screw this up.”

“Why me?!” you reply, “And what would you want us to even do?”

A simple retort. “I’m not the one with the club, am I?”

That is true...

“I got it, we’ll summon a demon!” That didn’t come from you. That came from Miku.

As expected of the club president. Always the one with great ideas.

Hanako blinks. The information must not be processing. “What?”

“A demon! That’s occult enough for you, right?”

She glances off to the side, trying to recollect herself. “Let’s say you somehow do manage to summon one. How is a demon going help the school?”

Hinami says, “Maybe something only a demon can do.”

“And what would we need a demon for? To discipline delinquents? To make sure school clubs stop wasting money?”

Miku laughs awkwardly.

You have to do something. As the vice-president of the club, you have to do... anything! “A book, we’ll make a book!” Stunned silence. Everyone looks at you as if you were crazy. “You know, like a grimoire... okay never mind, what about articles in the school paper. Sharing research, you know. The Occult Research Club.” Hinami’s not saying anything. Why isn’t she saying anything? Words are coming out of your mouth at an alarming rate. This is dangerous!

Quietly, Hinami finally replies, “Well, I guess either will do.” She stops. Then she adds, “Obviously not including summoning. Please do not summon anything. I look forward to seeing your progress in a week.” She ends her sentence by giving you a stern look, sterner than usual. What, why you?

Miku says, “W-wait, a week? Isn’t that a bit too soon?”

“You’ve been misappropriating club funds for almost a year now. Seizanigami, I could’ve shut your club down the moment I found out. This is a second chance,” she replies.

And then she walks out.

Hinami stares down, depressed and mumbling to herself.

Nemuri says to you, “School newspaper articles? I thought you couldn’t get along with their chief editor.”

You frown. “I do, but I guess I’ll have to suck it up.”

“We could still make a book,” Miku says, making a disgusted face. You’re not quite sure what to say about that. “In any case... we have to do something!”

Meanwhile, Hinami says, “I set up everything for nothing...”

Maybe you should say something.
>”Just because Hinami said you couldn’t summon anything... doesn’t mean you can’t. As long as she doesn’t know, right?”
>”There’s nothing we can do. It’s a shame, though. Maybe we can use it for something else.”

“Maybe we can exorcise some ants or something,” you throw out.

Hinami replies, “N-no, let’s not get near ants. And... this set up isn’t to banish spirits, but to draw them from another world.” She picks up a black book and starts flipping through it. “You have to be careful with these sort of things. I wonder what else we can do...”

Well as long as she’s here, the club won’t have anything to fear, right.

Miku makes a sound that’s between an uncomfortable laugh and clearing her throat. “Y’know, I was joking back then. How are we going to summon a demon...? They don’t even exist!”

“Oh right,” you say, “I got so swept up in the moment I forgot.” What kind of an idiot—you mean, gullible... er...

What kind of a person actually believes in the occult?

Okay, no, that still sounds terrible. Sorry, Hinami.

As if she read your mind, she says, “That’s why nothing ever works! You have to believe. Half of the challenge is believing in yourself and the magic you’re doing.”

Nemuri offhandedly adds, “It’ll be waste if we don’t at least try...”

You curse yourself. She’s right. ”Just because Hinami said you couldn’t summon anything... doesn’t mean you can’t. As long as she doesn’t know, right?”

Nemuri stops. She gives you a look that says, “If you say succubus, I’ll kill you.”

“What about an incubus—“ your mouth is immediately shut by Nemuri putting her hand over your mouth.

“Senpai, you’re unforgivable. Prepare to repent.” She’s about to do something! You don’t know what, but you’re sure you won’t like it.

Hinami replies straightly, “That sounds dangerous. Maybe we should stick to something safer? Oh, maybe we can try a seance!”

Miku chooses not to vocalize her complete lack of faith.

Instead, she says,”Wanna vote?”

“Who wants to summon a demon?” she asks.

You take Nemuri’s hand off and raise it, clearly forcing her to vote in your favor.

Nemuri shrugs. “Do you not guilty at all?”

“No,” you flatly respond.

Miku rolls her eyes, and then she says, “Séance?”

No one raises their hand.

Her brow furrows. “Hinami, not going to vote for your own suggestion?”

She replies, “I’m fine with anything, really. Just no ants.”

The club president shrugs. “’Kay, guess it’s time to summon a demon.” She raises a hand in the air as if to announce something, “Hinami, what should we do?”

“We should make a circle to bind it so that it can’t hurt any of us.”

Lowering her hand a little, she says, “Let’s... do that then!” There’s a bit of hesitation in Miku’s reply. Even though she would have no reason to. Really?

As it turns out, the circle is drawn with chalk—mostly because it’s easier to clean up. Five candles are placed on the point of each pentagram, and when it’s done, Nemuri goes to turn the lights off and closes the curtains.

Miku whispers, “Do you need me to pay you back for any of this?” She takes a look around. “Some of this doesn’t look cheap.”

“It’s okay,” she says, adjusting one of the candles. “They were all lying around anyways.” If she says so.

Brushing the dust off her hands, Nemuri says, “It’s done.”

You walk around the candlelit circle. “Now what?”

“Sit down,” she says, “and repeat after me. And remember, the most important thing is that you have to believe it!” Spacing yourselves out evenly, you do as she says and she begins.

Where the winds always howl
And the sun fails to reach
I beseech you, traveler of the sands
Grant us your favor
And walk among us once more

Silence.

Dim lights.

Nothing.

...Did it not work after all?

No, believe it. You trust her, and so, you choose to place your faith elsewhere, despite having no real reason to.

Are you stupid? Because you’re feeling really stupid right now.

Then wind buffets the windows of the room, and Miku jumps, crying out.

What? Was a demon actually summoned?

Thunder cracks, signaling the start of a storm outside. Nemuri looks around nervously.

“Ah...” Hinami looks a bit surprised.

The hairs on your back rise, and your chest tightens. “Is something watching us?” Innumerable eyes.

Interventions Remaining: 1

Loud banging.

A demon approaches.

“Boo!”

Screams and cries fill the air. You contributed too.

There, standing at the doorway is...

Your club advisor, Atsuto Ensei, and Nemuri’s older brother.

You clutch your chest, letting your heartrate fall to normal.

Nemuri shouts—or at least talking louder than normal, “Don’t scare us like that! What are you doing?”

“Looking for you kids,” he says, trying to hide the smile appearing on his face. “Come on, I heard the storms going to get worse. You guys should get going if you don’t want to get soaked by the rain.” He takes a look around. “So that’s what everyone’s been up to, huh?”

Miku stands right back up, blowing the candle beside out accidentally. “Oh! We’re going to write a book, and newspaper articles too, so you better help us if you don’t want the club to disappear!”

“Eh?” you say, “We’re doing both now?”

“Well we can’t decide, right? Then obviously we have to do both.”

Nemuri groans. “That sounds like a lot of work.”

Laughing, Hinami says, “I’m sure it’ll be fun.”

The club advisor crosses his arms. “Come on now, start moving. We can clean this up tomorrow.”

“I’ll stay behind to clean up. It’ll be really quick,” you say. It’s not like Miku’s going to, even though she’s the club president.

“I’ll help too,” Hinami says, “It’s faster with two of us.”

With a guilty look on Miku’s face, you wonder if you can guilt trip her to stay? Nemuri, on the other hand, doesn’t hold back one bit. She hands the two of you a bottle of green tea and wishes you luck before walking right out.

Miku says, “Hurry up! It’ll be dangerous, you know? What if you get hit by a bolt of lightning or something?” She says goodbye as you’re taking down the curtains, and you give her a wave.

Carefully, you undo a knot that’s hanging the mysterious skulls in the air.

You think out loud, “It must’ve taken you a long time to put up everything.”

She dismisses it. “I didn’t have anything better to do, so I didn’t mind.”

Distracted momentarily, your hand bumps against something and knocks it off, but with quick reflexes and a bit of luck, you manage to catch it before it hit the ground.

Except you hit the ground instead.

Hinami rushes over to you. “Ryuuta, are you okay?”

Picking yourself up, you notice you have some kind of necklace in your hand.

“I’m fine; at least this didn’t break.” You examine it with both hands. It used to hang from the wires crossing the ceiling, which also held up all sorts of other things. “What is this anyways? It looks like a necklace.” The twine is frayed and itchy, and various dull gemstones and bones hang at even intervals. The center is a round piece of steel, some kind of sigil engraved into it.

“It is,” she says, nodding, “It’s a good luck charm I got a long time ago. I think I used up all of its luck, but there’s a little left.” Her face brightens. “Oh! I was going to stay behind to clean up anyways, but as thanks for helping me, I’ll give it to you! I’m sure you can make good use of it.”

You don’t feel anything from holding it.

“I can’t take this,” you say, shaking your head, “It looks too sentimental. I bet it looks better on you anyways.” You’re about to put it on her before you realize the damn thing’s dirty as all hell and decide against it.

“No way,” she says, laughing. “It looks pretty bad. I don’t think you’re supposed to actually wear it.”

Actually, it probably doesn’t look good on anyone except the shirtless body of hermits in tune with nature.

You are absolutely sure that was who made this.

You give it back to her, and she clasps it between her hands.

“Then,” she says, focusing intently on it, “I think I should use the rest of it up. This is a good time as any.”

Curious, you ask, “What do you mean?”

“I’m going to make a wish. You know you can do that, right? Using up your luck to grant you a wish? It’s kind of like saying, ‘wouldn’t it be nice if it started raining ice cream?” and it suddenly did.”

“Hey, that sounds like cheating to me,” you say, “Is that even allowed?”

“Don’t care; I’m going to do it anyways!” she replies, smiling. “This is the first time you all did something like this with me. Usually, everyone just sits around being grumpy or sleepy.” She holds the necklace tightly, and then she says, “I wish that this club can stay like this for a little while longer.”

“Come on, that’s not something you need to use a wish on,” you tell her, “We can do that ourselves. At least, dream bigger.”

“Haha,” she sheepishly looks away. “Maybe you’re right.”

A new day means a new start.

You, Nemuri, Miku, and Hinami are gathered in the club room once more, sitting around the large table in the center of the room. The only table in the room.

“How are we going to show progress in six days?” Miku cries out, her fingers running through her hair. “Can we even write anything good that fast? What do we even have to show for it?!”

“We did the summoning thing,” you bring up, “Though nothing really happened.”

She racks her head in confusion. ”What did we summon? A storm? Nemuri’s brother? What if we actually summoned an incubus and he’s going to stay at this school as a foreign exchange student?”

Hinami thinks out loud. “It would’ve appeared in the circle. That’s why we drew it after all, so it wouldn’t escape and hurt us.” Is that right? You could’ve sworn you were being watched, and not by the club advisor either.

You slouch in your seat. “I don’t think ‘How to Not Summon a Demon’ would make for a good read.” Real life really is disappointing.

Miku puts her face right on the table, and the sound of impact makes you grimace.

It’s then that Nemuri finally speaks up. “...Why don’t we investigate something then?” Everyone’s eyes fall on her, and she clarifies. “If we can’t make something happen, then why don’t we go somewhere that already has something happening... or something like that.” The meaning of her words slur together into a confusing blend, but you get the gist.

“So... what’s happening where?”

Hinami says, “What about the Seven Mysteries of the school? There’s always something like that, right?”

Nemuri mumbles, “I don’t think we even have one, much less seven.”

“If we look hard enough, I’m sure we can find something,” she replies.

Miku shakes her head. “We need to think bigger. Something outside the school. There’s plenty of stuff out there, right?”

You take out your phone.

“How about something that doesn’t have curses?” you suggest, “Maybe we need to even out our karma after that all that yesterday.”

Miku starts looking things up on her phone too. “Lucky places? What’s the least evil place here?”

Hinami says, “There’s the shrine everyone goes to on New Years. And for exams.”

“Oh, there’s that noodle store that’s half an hour from here—“

You interrupt, “Are you just hungry?”

“That’s not the point! Apparently, one of their menu items gives you a sudden boost determination and willpower,” she answers.

“That sounds like a tourist trap,” you say.

“Oh,” Nemuri says as if she remembered something, “There’s that statue of a dog. If you rub it’s paw, you’ll stop all of your relationships with friends and family from crumbling for a month.”

“That’ll take way too long to confirm! And can we even confirm something like that?!” you point out, “Is there really nothing else?”

“Let’s have a vote,” she says, “Who wants to go to a shrine?”

No one raises their hand.

“Hinami... really?”

She replies, “Haha... sorry.”

Miku just shakes her head. “What about noodles?” She raises her hand, and when she sees you do too, she says, “Ryuuta! I knew I could count on you!” Nemuri looks frustrated. “Okay, who wants to go to the statue?”

Nemuri’s hand shoots up. “There’s no way I’m going that far!” She’s the only one for it. “Hinami, you need to vote too!”

“I’m okay with anything, really.”

She rises from her seat. “Then vote for me! Do you really want to walk all the way there?!”

“A-ah...” She’s stunned from the pressure.

Miku shuts it down. “Noodles it is!” she says with a hungry smile, “Even if Hinami voted, it would’ve been a tie, and we would be here all day. Let’s get going already!” She grabs her bag in attempt to get everyone to start leaving.

It works when you join along. You say, “Come on, just this once.” Nemuri begrudgingly leaves the room last while you ask Miku, “Have you ever been there?”

“No way,” she says, “It’s too far away. But for the sake of our club, I’ll go there anyways!” So she just wanted an excuse.

You glance backwards.

Should you...?

No, you shouldn’t. Spoiling her would do no one any good. And her brother would be annoyed at you for it.

But, you feel sorry for her; she looks like a fish that’s been dragged out of the water. Maybe you should do something.

You slow down so Nemuri catches up to you.

Then, you attempt to reassure her. “I bet the noodles aren’t magical at all. I bet they’re so good that they inspire you to do anything.”

“Didn’t you say it was a tourist trap? I don’t believe it. This is all your fault, senpai,” she says, “Carry me there.”

“Why don’t I make it up to you later?” you say, pretending as if she never said that last bit.

She thinks for a minute. “Okay, I’ll save that favor for later then. No excuses then.”

When did it become a favor? Ah, never mind. It’s too late.

You’ve arrived. It’s a small, local place, and it’s pretty popular. The design is a little rustic, but that wasn’t really a surprise.

Four bowls follow, one for each.

Miku is gushing over it. Hinami tried to take a picture when she thought no one was looking. Nemuri has almost slouched so far down her seat, she’s about to fall off.

You? You’re savoring it’s taste. Its broth is light, yet so flavorful. The hint of countless ingredients you fail to name dance upon your tongue, almost making up for the exorbitant price. It’s good.

And despite the broth’s temperature, you drink it all down anyways, stomach full, satisfied.

You turn to see Miku finishing her second bowl.

You say nothing.

She glances as you as she wipes her lips with a napkin. “This is bad, Ryuuta, my purse is crying.”

Nemuri breathes out heavily. “This is bad. I can’t move. The blessing was a hoax!”

“Wha—” Hinami starts to check on her. “Are you okay?”

“I couldn’t eat this much,” she replies, “Someone help.”

You reply, “Don’t blame this on the blessing.”

“So, is it hoax or not?” you ask.

Miku says, “It definitely works; I feel great!” She attracts some sideway glances with her voice.

“Fake,” Nemuri declares.

Hinami muses, “I’m not sure. I don’t feel anything amazing. It was good, but...”

“That’s the point!” Miku says, “It’s the feeling you get after you eat a good meal. You know, like maybe eating a homecooked meal by your crush, or craving something and finally getting to eat it after a long time. It’s that kind of satisfaction.”

As if she shared the epiphany, Hinami says, “Ah, that is a magical feeling!”

Grumbling, Nemuri says, “That’s stretching it.”

Was it a waste of time? Maybe. All things considered, you feel pretty good. That feeling is how you say something incredibly stupid. “My treat, I guess.”

Miku’s head turns so fast you’re afraid it might snap. She says, “Eh? You’re paying? Are you sure?”

“I am. Don’t make me reconsider,” you say, taking out your wallet. Miku’s smiling. “Why are you looking like we accomplished something?”

“Eh? But we did, didn’t we? We have something to write about now.”

You pause. “Do you really think they’re going to accept a food review?”

“Well don’t write it like a food review! Write it like an investigation, a story,” she replies.

“We still have six more days,” you remind her, “We can save it for later, if we need it.”

“Wait, are we still doing this on the weekends?” A pause.

“What happened to doing anything to save the club?” you ask.

“Ghh, I know,” Miku says, “I’ll do it if I have to.”

While she contemplates her future, you grimace as your wallet is practically emptied. You were actually going to buy something later tonight, but it’s too late now. Your money flies off into the distance.

Hinami helps Nemuri out, as if your kouhai was incapable of walking with a full stomach.

She says, “Should we call it a day?”

You nod. “I think it’s too late to head back anyways.”

The four of you walk for a while longer before people start splitting up. Nemuri finally stopped leaning on Hinami before she had to go in a different direction.

Hinami gives you and Miku a wave. “If you’re writing an article, tell me! I want to help.” She says her goodbye, leaving the two of you to head home.

Wordlessly, you walk by her side down the sidewalks. It’s a silence that’s neither uncomfortable or unwanted, nor was it new. Miku’s been your next door neighbor ever since you can remember, although there was a period of time where you drifted apart from her. When you saw her attending the same high school as you, however, that was quickly undone.

Walking a few steps ahead of you, she’s the one to break the silence. “Hey, let me pay you back; your mom isn’t home tonight, right? Let me cook dinner.”

“You’re still thinking about food after all of that?”

“I didn’t say we’d have it now,” she says, turning around.

So she offers.

When was the last time she offered to do that? A long time ago.

“What’s gotten into you?” you ask.

“I may or may not have been inspired by those noodles.” Uh oh. “And I may or may not need a test subject.” Oh no. “Come on, Ryuuta, it’s free food!”

Well...

It’s not like you can afford to buy anything.

“Alright, my stomach is at your mercy.”

...

A few hours later when you’ve forgotten all about it, she knocks on your door to get you. Opening the door, you find that she’s wearing that apron again.

She asks, “Ready?”

“Even if I say no, does it matter?”

“Nope! You don’t’ need an empty stomach yet,” she says, grabbing your hand and dragging you out. You lock it behind you and enter her condo.

Her parents are usually away at work, though she manages to keep everything tidy, more than you.

You follow her into the kitchen, which is actually a complete mess. Everything is laid out and stacking atop each other.

“Are you trying to copy the recipe? By taste and memory?” you look around. She’s certainly been experimenting, seeing the chaos here.

“The stock isn’t right,” she replies. She grabs a spoonful of something out of a bowl and sticks it into your mouth without warning. “What do you think?”

It doesn’t quite measure up. “It feels like something is missing.”

“I know, but what?”

A pause. “You know, with all this occult business we’ve been doing lately, I couldn’t help but think—“

Now she’s the one with “uh oh” written all over her face. Miku says, “That the recipe is cursed? Or that you want to do something weird? Either way, it’s a ‘no’!”

You laugh. “Come on, it’ll be fun.”

She crosses her arms. “Don’t say anything stupid.”

“How about... divination?”

“What did I just say?!”

She pokes you in the face with the spoon.

“Come on, what’s wrong with a little fun?”

She holds her breath. And then a sigh. “Fiiine, what do you have in mind?”

“Let’s ask a spirit for help,” you reply.

Before you can elaborate, Miku asks, “And how is a spirit going to know the recipe?”

“Hey, you never know. Like I was saying, let’s have them point out the ingredients, kind of like an ouija board.”

“...I can’t believe I’m going along with this,” she says, “So, how do you plan on doing this?”

A quick scan of the kitchen, and you find a wooden spoon. “How’s this? Pretty fitting.”

She gives you a weak glare and grabs onto the spoon right underneath your hand. “Don’t we need incense or something.”

“That’ll just mess up our sense of smell and taste,” you say.

She laughs. “Okay, I get it now.”

“Hmm, that stack of bowls and cups will be ‘Yes’ and that other one will be a ‘No’. How’s that?”

“Perfect,” she says, “So, should you start asking the ‘spirit’ some questions, or should I?”

“You do it,” you say.

“Hmm,” she affirms, “Well, I need to see if the spirit knows what he’s talking about, right?”

You try to hide your smirk. “How do you know the spirit’s a ‘he’?”

“Same difference,” she replies, “Okay, what’s the main vegetable used?” Glancing around, you check what she has laid out. As you think, you start moving the spoon in circles—along with her arm. Baffled, Miku asks, “What are you doing?”

“Warming it up. That’s what you have to do, right? Otherwise the spirit won’t be able to answer properly.”

“Maybe the spirit should hurry up before they get kicked out of the kitchen.”

You stop the spoon. “There!” It points to some leafy greens. “How did the spirit do?”

Giggling, Miku adjusts her grip. “Okay, let’s find the recipe then. Mr. Spirit, is anything in the stock not supposed to be there?” And so the spoon magically gravitates toward the stack of dirty dishes that stand for “no”. “Then, what are we missing?”

This time, it hovers, unable to decide.

You note, “Wow, the spirit’s sure confused.”

“Maybe they can’t help with the recipe after all,” she jokes. Half-joking, maybe.

“Or maybe it’s not here,” you say tightening your grip, “It needs a little warming up.”

You make a large circle motion, and surprisingly, she holds on with a little resistance. You’re tempted. You pull, and with a bit of force, you spin her around with the spoon. Her laughing is cut short as she trips. She grabs onto your shirt and drags you along, and but the wooden spoon is sent flying. She hits the edge of the counter and yelps, half in surprise and half in pain. You, in attempt to not fall on her, brace yourself on the cupboards above. That was close; you almost headbutted her.

Apologizing, you pull away from her. “Sorry, I should’ve caught you.”

“You idiot,” Miku says, rubbing her side. She looks angry. Oops. “Where’s did the spoon go?” She takes a good look around, and when she finds it, her mood brightens up. “Oh. Oh!”

“What is it?” Your eyes follow her, and you realize what had happened. When the spoon was flung, it had hit the wall, bounced off of it, and landed on a pantry shelf, and directly next to it...

“Honey!” she says, holding a jar of it in one hand and a spoon in the next. “The spirit is a genius!” Running off, she leaves you speechless as she opens it and adds a bit of it to the stock.

She takes a spoonful of it and puts it in her mouth. With a wide grin, she shakes her fist in the air as if she seized success. She takes another spoonful and holds it out to you, one hand under. “Try it!”

Is she messing with you?

Or does she just not care at all?

There’s no time to think—

You close your mouth down and she tilts it upwards. It goes in and down your throat, your tongue barely having enough time to process anything.

Your mind was elsewhere.

“How was it?” Miku asks.

“It’s good,” you reply weakly.

Luckily, she turns back to the stock, letting you properly reflect on what just happened.

It’s no good. Your thoughts are a mess.

Say something.

You ask, “Are you going to be eating just that for the next week?”

“Yup!” she answers. You watch her as she hums, smiling as if something good just happened. She’s sure happy about her noodles.

She really needs to pay attention more.

Out of the corner of her eye, she looks at you to ask, “You’re joining me, right?”

Half consciously, you nod. “Guess I have to.”

The day is ruined.

For both of you.

“Please stop looking at me like that,” you say. She doesn't. “I haven’t even done anything yet.”

“You’re ruining my shot.”

“I’m not even in front of you.”

“You’re in the nearby vicinity, which is enough to ruin it.”

Aya Shinbun, chief editor of the school newspaper and president of its school club. You do not get along with her. She’s photographing the school for some reason, and when you passed by and stopped to see what she was doing, she made a sour face.

She asks, “If you don’t want anything from me, please go away.”

It’s too early to have a conversation like this. Your mood has already plummeted

Neither of you can stand each other.

“Taking creepshots again?” you ask, “Things like that is why no one wants to do interviews with the newspaper, you know?”

“Shut up! Who am I creeping on, the front of the school?” she seethes, “If you’re too blind to tell, I’m doing a piece on the utter lack of care of the main building’s image.” Then she stops. “And that was one time! Once! And it was for a just cause!”

“Uh huh, okay. I didn’t think you cared about that sort of thing.”

“Hmf, I don’t,” she says, “But the newspaper club budget is being slashed.” Then, in a mocking voice, she mimics someone else, “This is a tabloid blah blah blah, you should write something that’s not gossip. Bleh, who does she think she is?!”

You cross your arms. “I don’t get it.”

“This’ll teach her to micromanage clubs! How about this for a headline: ‘School Council Doesn’t Care for Quality of the School’?” Aya says, “I better get an interview too. Better yet, she turns it down and I’ll have even more ammo!”

She’s just walking trouble.

“Yeah, good luck with that,” you say. You wonder if Hanako would shut down their club. Probably not, since it is considered a staple of “school culture”, though she might completely destroy their remaining budget. Aya’s problem, you suppose.

She tilts her head like a bird. “Funny, I haven’t heard from you lately. Been keeping your arsonist tendencies suppressed? Haven’t rummaged through anyone’s belongings lately?”

“Oh wow, you’re still twisting stories, what’s new?” you throw out, “But no, and no, but I know you’d go through other’s people’s things without a problem.”

“Sorry, I actually know and respect the concept called ‘privacy’. Maybe you should look it up sometime?”

You breathe out your nose slightly harder than usual. “That’s funny, coming from you.” She glares at you, raises her camera, and snaps a photo. Though you try to cover your face, the flash and sound of the shutter happens right before you manage to do so. “Hey, what was that?”

“Taking a picture of garbage on school grounds.” And then she walks away.

You need some peace and quiet. Walking up the stairs, you head for the rooftop. Though it’s locked, the Student Council President had told you where the key was hidden. You’ve only used it a few times, though, seeing as how there’s no real reason to be up here.

When you open the door, you let the breeze cool you down. With the door shut, you take a seat beside it, leaning on the wall.

You let your convenience store lunch sit in the plastic bag on the ground.

Sometimes, it’s just good to relax.

And then the doorknob shakes, and you freeze.

Someone slowly opens the door and peeks around, stopping at you.

“You stole my spot,” Nemuri says, “What are you doing up here?”

“How did you open it?”

“If you jiggle the handle hard enough, it unlocks on its own.” Then, silence. “I’ll go, then.”

She turns to leave.

“Wait, why are you leaving?”

“It looked like you didn’t want me to bother you,” she says, “So I’ll go.”

She did have a point.

You simply ask, “Want to eat together?”

Nemuri pauses. She then raises her hands, making a show of how she’s brought absolutely nothing with her. “I don’t have lunch.”

“I’ll give you some of mine,” you offer.

Hesitant, she fully leaves the safety of the doorway to sit down beside you. “Oh, it’s not homemade.”

“They’re just sandwiches. What, don’t want free food?”

“I’m not allowed to be disappointed?” she asks, pouting, “But I’ll take it. Thanks.”

Both of you take one, and when you bite down, you appreciate the plainness of it. It’s so unremarkable.

“Senpai,” she says, “Cheer up; you’re starting to ruin my image of you.”

“Huh?” you reply incredulously, “What image?”

“This won’t do at all,” she says, “Smile. It’s okay if you fake it.”

You reply, “That’s some really terrible advice.”

“Yeah, but shouldn’t you be happy you get to eat lunch with a cute kouhai?” she says with a completely straight face, “I would be.” Then she takes another bite out of her sandwich.

“You are unbelievable,” you say, ruffling her hair.

She cries out, “A-ahh, stop that!” Grabbing your hand, she lifts it away, trying to smooth out her bangs. “Ghh...”

You grin.

You spoil her too much.
