/qst/ - Quests

You wake up, drowsy. You feel a splitting headache as you incorporate yourself in the middle of a grassfield. You look around yourself, at a complete loss, wondering where you are. All you remember is a dream, a strange dream. A man of silvery hair drank a peculiar crimson liquid, after that, all was fire and ashes. In the confusion of the raging fire you saw a dragon -no, many dragons- roaming the sky. You shake your head ever so slightly, as to avoid increasing the horrible beat that bangs in your head.

As you get up, you look around yourself, you're between a small forest and a shoddy dirt road. You then check yourself for wounds and see that you have a small, lean body. You're... a child? Of course you are a child. You've always been a child. Right? Everything feels hazy. You lay down on the ground again, the pain of the headache forcing you to.

You feel like crying. Where are you? What was your name? Why are you all alone? Did you do something wrong? The tears begin to flow as you hug your knees tight. You whimper in desperation.

In the road, you hear a rumbling, like a small cart's. It sure is, some old man with a mule in tow is coming closer to you. You can barely see him through the flow of your tears.

"M-My my... Small child, what are you doing here all alone?" He looks around, confused and bewildered, then back to you. "Where are your parents? Can you speak?" His worry seems to increase. He scratches his ragged hair, whatever is left of it as he searches for a sign of your parents.

You respond. "My head hurts, I'm alone."

"I... You have no parents? But your hair and eyes, you're..."

Weirded out by what the man says, you check your hair. It's silvery. Woah, what a pretty color. It's bright under the sun, so cute! But it's always been that way, right? Strange.

"Alright, alright." The old man says with a sigh. "Listen, my name's Buck, Old Buck for some. You're really little, are you a girl or a boy?"

The man's question frustrates you. "I'm a girl!" You say in an angry tone. Your flustered reaction is one you regret immediately. The headache begins pounding your head again. Your arms instantly reach to it and you bring your head down for some respite.

"O-Oh... Yes, I see. That's alright. You're a girl." The old man seems confused, as if a million questions ran through his head. "Tell me. Don't you remember your parents at all?"

Try as you might, you can't remember anything about them. Their faces, their bodies. Where are they? Sadness agitates your mind yet again. You feel so sad. You can't help but start crying again.

The man is drawing a blank as worry overtakes him. "Listen, little girl." He says, then pauses, seemingly thinking. "Let's try something else, alright? Calm down. Tell me, what do you know of yourself?"

You shake your head as if saying no. "Nothing."

The man looks at you, his eyes open wide. "Well then, tell me something you know. Is there something that you know how to do? Something you like?

"I hear things from a long way and really really like talking to friends." You say, timid and with a reddened from the tears and the headache.

Old Buck nods. "I see. Would you like to come with me? I have a home a little farther up from here. It's a dusty old shack, but it will keep you warm during nights. Then we can look for your father and mother." His voice is gruffy but his tone is tender and sweet. It makes you feel a little better.

You're not sure you want to go with a stranger, but you're alone and your head hurts, and the thought of going inside a house is very tempting. You nod to the old man.

"Right then! Hop on into the cart and don't sting yourself on the hay bales." He says. You do so, taking a little while to sit onto the old cart, trying to find a comfortable position that doesn't have a stray nail poking around.

You look down to yourself as the headache becomes more of a background noise. You're wearing a sundress, a bit ragged and shoddily made. It's dirty from when you were on the ground, you give it a few pats and some dust clears up, making you have a small coughing fit.

"You alright, lil' girl?" Old Buck asks from the front of the cart while his mule whines. "Aye." you respond. The old lard laughs, "Aye? I'd thought a little girl of silvery hair would say 'Yes, mister.'"

You wonder as you paddle your feet. You think you've always said aye. But you don't know for sure. You were so lost in thought that the old man feels awkward enough to ask another question.

"Ehem... Well... Do you remember your name?" he asks. It seems like he's not expecting an answer, but...

Your eyes shine. You do! You're...

"I'm Rhaenyra!" You say with great cheer in your voice. You laugh a little as you remember, it brings truly fond yet hazy memories to you. You do think of two silhouettes, bright but featureless, watching you with warmth in their eyes.

You look back to see how the old man reacts. He seems stupefied while he looks back to you. "Rhae... nyra." he says, then regains his composure and adopts a more cheery tone. "You know, uh... Rhae! Rhae sounds good. You know, Rhae. We live in Westeros, home of the Seven Kingdoms." he says. Then he concentrates for a little bit before continuing. "The North, the Reach, the Stormlands, the Riverlands, uh..." he pauses again. "All seven are ruled by only one King. And the King is the same as you, silver haired and with beautiful purple eyes. The great Aerys Targaryen!" he explains merrily.

You nod, full of happiness. "Is he my daddy? Am I a Targaryen? Am I gonna be a great queen?" you ask full of joy.

Old Buck seems doubtful before replying to you. "Well uh... Maybe one day! We can't know if you're a Targaryen, that's simply one big family, you might be from another family. All those families with silvery hair and purple eyes are called 'Valyrians'." He says. "They rode big dragons and-"

"No dragons." You spout in a serious tone. The way you said it, it seemed like you were going to murder the old man. He abruptly stopped when he heard you. Old Buck responds, "You don't like them? Well, they're all gone anyhow."

A silence falls back into place. Only the creaking of the old wooden wheels and the wind flowing through the leaves of the trees can be heard. Buck seems content with the silence.

Old Buck snaps. "Of course! How could I forget! We're in what's known as Crownlands. As in a place that the King himself watches over." He scoffs a little at that. "Anyhow, I live close to a village call Pallars, run by Bald Lewys. " He thinks for a short moment. "Then we're actually under Lord Clayton Birch of Birch Hall." He goes on to define what a lord is to you. You don't really get it, but you listen intently anyhow.

"... So as I was saying, Lord Clayton is a bannerman-" He muses to himself, wondering how he's going to explain a bannerman to a small child. "Lord Clayton's boss- Aye, sounds good- is Lord Renfred Rykker of Duskendale. A big city way east of here. Then Lord Rykker's boss is King Aerys himself. Before Rykker was around though, the Darklyn family ruled Duskendale but they... Well, they did a real bad thing to the King and got him real mad so they had to give Duskendale to the Rykker family."

He scratches the back of his head, wondering if you understood that. You didn't, but you smile at him anyway. "Are they Valyrians too?"

Old Buck smiles warmly. "No, young lass. They're more like me, brown haired and brown eyed, though I'm just an old peasant here."

Old Buck's hair is not brown, but you think it might've been, once.

>>2811149
A little later, you speak up to Buck again. "Buck! Do you have a family too?"

Buck seems uncomfortable for a moment, his visage has a hard time holding his neutral expression. "Well, there was this lil' ol' miss. Her name was Marissa, used to call her Mari. But..." he pauses for a moment. "Well well. We had some kids and all, and they went off to work wood to Duskendale, two good ol' boys who barely ever visit their pa. Mari had to leave to see her pa and ma again, I won't see her for a looong time." He smiles to himself, somewhat proud of how he put it all.

>Is this like we're a Valyrian from 1000 years ago before they got Dragons and our family opposed subjugating them or something?
Maybe. Maybe not.

"What happens if we can't find my parents? Can I stay with you?" You ask. It's somewhat shameful to make such a question, but you don't even know your pa or your ma. You feel like it would be lonely to live out there alone.

Old Buck smiles again. "Well... Sure! I'm more used to raising boys though. I don't know if I'm fit to raise a young lass like you." He says.

>>2812063
Your stomach rumbles. "Can I eat some of this green stuff, Buck?" You say as you pick up some hay and give it a good look.

Buck looks at you and stops his mule in worry. "No no! That's food for the animals. This old mule here and a bunch of chickens I've got back in the shack, nothin' else."

You smile a facetious smile at him. "I know, Old Buck. People have to eat people food and animals eat animal food." You say. You bring your hand to your stomach. "But I am hungry."

Old Buck acknowledges you with a short laugh. "I know, little Rhae. There's plenty of vegetables back at home and I'll be making a good old stew for both of us, to celebrate finding you before something bad did."

You look at Buck with curiosity. "What's something bad?" you ask.

Buck shrugs. "I don't know. A wolf, maybe. Heard the Riverlands, which are just west of here, have one real big pack led by the biggest and baddest wolf ever seen. Forests aren't safe anymore unless you got a rackety cart like mine, heard it scares them away."

You nod as Buck explains himself. "Righto." you respond.

"Righto?" Buck says. "You speak strange, little Rhae."

"Aye!" You say bemusingly. You give Buck another broad smile.

Buck's gravely voice echoes a laugh. "Funny lass." he says while clearing his eyes, watered up from the laugh.

Finally, the Old Buck's shack is in sight. It looks old, very old. It's been patched up multiple times and it's a wonder how it didn't fall yet. Old Buck stops his mule in front of it, untying it from the cart and leading it to a small stable, wooden as well, much more patched up than the shack itself. You understand why when you see the mule giving the door a good bite before Buck throws a good palm to its ass. The mule then legs it inside. You laugh at the scene and Old Buck smiles his sweet smile.

"Right then, I'll go in and get stewing. Go say hello to my chickens and the dog if you want. Dog's name is Young Buck, at least according to my kids, but I call him Dog and leave it at that."

When you see the dog behind the shack, you instantly see a young Buck. He's got the beard and hair for sure. It seems happy to see someone and starts tugging on the old rope to get closer to you. Not too far away are a bunch of chickens in another, very small table. It's like five or six chickens, you'd never seen so many.

Nope, I can tell you that much.

You can't help but approach the dog as soon as you see it. He slobbers you with licks while you struggle to pet him. Your hands barely able to reach the top of its head. You wonder if the chickens would like pets too, it'll be hard to pet them while they're inside their little stable though.

After giving the dog a good pet, you wonder if you should open the chicken's little home to give them some pets too. But your thoughts are interrupted by Old Buck coming right around to check up on you.

"You met Dog then? He's a good lad, still living with his pa even when pa's real kids don't even come to visit." He says while petting and playing with the dog.

You nod. "He's really nice!" you say.

Old Buck's smile shines again, you wonder if he's gonna get face cramps from all the smiling. "He's a guard dog for now, though not too good at his job. I've got to teach him not to eat the chickens and to growl and bark at strangers so they don't get ideas on stealing my chickens or my mule." Old Buck sits on a tree log. His smile fades as he sits, pondering, while he rummages what seems like the remnants of a fire place.

He looks at you, smiling again. "You want to help make him a good guard dog, Rhae? It'll take us a few months and lots of patience. In exchange, I'll let you live here and eat some of my food, though I've gotta prepare a bed for you too. I mean, it's not like I'll force you to, but you need to learn things to make a living out here." His tone is sweet but serious. You hadn't heard him talking like that.

I suppose, I said bows cuz it's the weapon women typically use as they don't need to use so much brute strength and skill as they would if they were in melee combat.

The Naginata was considered a womanly weapon, and for a truely strong bow you would need a good deal of strength.
>>
>>2812698
This guy is a peasant, he probably only has a short bow or something, which doesn't need as much strength. Again, the point is that we're not a little girl running into melee combat, but we still have some way to protect ourself.

You nod profusely. You've never been with a dog like it, as far as you can remember. You thought dogs were much smaller than this, but this one's twice your size. Old Buck shoves his hand into your hair and pets you like he did with Young Buck. "Well, first thing you've gotta learn is that he's got feelings like you. You've gotta give him good food and pet him a lot so he likes you, then you can start teachin' him whatever you want and he'll listen to you because he likes you."

You nod again, listening intently while you gleefully look at Young Buck. An idea comes to your head and you grab Old Buck's tunic to get his attention. "If Young Buck's going work hard to protect us. I want to help him! Let me shoot arrows or swing a stick to the bad guys." You say while you start doing swings in the air with an imaginary stick.

Old Buck sighs, "If someone's gonna fight alongside him, it'll be me, Rhae. A girl shouldn't be learnin' how to fight. Men do it for 'em." He then goes into the chicken's pen, unwilling to talk further.

You pout angrily at Old Buck as he turns away from you. You really really want to fight alongside the two Bucks. Old Buck likes you, so you could always convince him with a few good words if you can discern what bothers him.

Don't worry, considering there were only two options I can do a bit of a mixup.

As Buck takes a few eggs from the chickens. You start explaining your worries to him. Wondering what would happen if he were to get sick or hurt and couldn't fight. Or if you were to be all alone again.

Buck sighs deeply. It's obvious that you struck a chord in him. "Listen, lil' Rhae. How about this: We train Young Buck first, then we see what's to be done next. You're still young and tiny, it's no use training someone so young, you could get hurt bad and I really wouldn't want that." He explains himself with a gentle tone, though you can sense a measure of sadness in it.

He continues while going inside the shack to leave the eggs there. "Anyhow, after the Duskendale thing, I honestly think there won't be bad people coming around in a looong time. King Aerys has everything under control. I'm sure. But..." Old Buck then shows you a quarterstaff as long as he is tall that he picked up from inside the house. "I can always show you how to defend yourself with this, in the near future.

You nod again and again. Old Buck's a real nice old man. You go off to play with the animals, then soon after eat the stew that Old Buck prepared. It's got no meat in it, but the vegetables are delicious and Old Buck tells you with pride that some are homegrown.

For the next few days, Old Buck starts teaching the dog respect towards the chickens and towards you. You patiently observe and listen to whatever tricks he uses to convince the animal. You then start doing the tricks yourself. Young Buck approves of the amount of attention he's recieving and seems like a good learner, he has barely any trouble accepting you as its master.

One day, Buck tells you to get inside the shack, some folks are coming to visit. People from the village who bring him food, he says. You wonder what he gives in return. He strictly ordered you to stay inside the shack, but a part of you is really curious as to know who these people are and what they do. You really really want to talk to them!

You really, really can't help but get up from the stool you've been sitting on. You're struggling with your emotions. Old Buck told you to stay put, but you want to see these people! It's been days since you showed up here and all you've seen was Old Buck, Young Buck, the mule and the chickens.

As you start peeking out, you instinctively grab your argent hair. Your small violet eyes wide open and concentrated on the three people outside. You see Old Buck, some young lady and a young man. They dress like him for sure, the woman's clothes are a bit nicer, but not by too much, she does have real pretty hair though, a mix of blonde and brown. They're giving him some vegetables and in exchange, it looks like he's giving them a bunch of eggs!

Your heart is beating fast. The thrill of sneaking around and being unseen by clueless folks while you can listen to whatever they're saying without you stopping some words from coming out. You want to keep doing stuff like this, going around without people noticing you. You smile as you think that you have a good knack for it. You hear something strange amidst the conversation though, it snaps you back to reality. The young man is talking to Old Buck.

"...So, you're sure you don't want to send someone young to live up here with you? You could teach 'em a lot, Buck. And he'd take care of you and your chores." he says.

Old Buck is quick to reply, raising his hand in a gesture of refusal. "I already told you a few months ago, Erryk. I have no interest in an apprentice."

The so called Erryk shakes his head. "C'mon Buck, the young men at the village need this. You know that the King is off his rocks. How long until one of the bigger lords snaps and decides to overthrow him for Rhaegar? There'll be a war."

You feel extremely curious at the name he mentioned. Rhaegar? It sounds just like you! Rhaenyra.

Old Buck seems to get angry at the mention of war. "Quiet, Erryk!" He says. "I'm too old and frail to teach the village boys anything, ask for lord Birch's help if you're so inclined." With that, he finishes the conversation with a stern farewell and turns around to enter the shack. The couple leaves from whence they came.

Thankfully, it seems you were hidden well enough. As soon as you notice Old Buck coming back to the shed, you hurry back to your stool, paddling your legs after sitting on it.

Old Buck enters the shack, exhaling hard, he seems a bit spent up. As he approaches you, he smiles again and pats the top of your head. It was a real important talk he had with those people and you really really want to ask old Buck about what happened in there. What should you do? He didn't mention anything about not being alone, or about you. And why wouldn't he help those young boys who need a master?

Some complain about prices, others wonder how this year's crops will do. Same old." He says, flustered at first but calming down as he realizes that his lies might work out. "They were Erryk and Melara. Melara's the daughter of Pallas' mayor, Bald Lewys. Erryk's her husband, he's from the North, I think. Or his father was, I don't remember." Old Buck shrugs, he doesn't seem to care about the matter.

"Why did I have to hide? I wanted to talk to them too!" Your tone grows in anger as you say it. It's unfair being stuck here like this and having to rely on sneaking about to get to know anything about others.

Old Buck puts a reassuring hand on your shoulder. "Listen, Rhae. You're very unique, your silver hair and purple eyes make it so you look extremely important. Lots of bad people might want to get you, I want to protect you from them, hear?"

You feel queasy about all of this, but there's also a hint of rage coming from you.

>"Okay, I trust you. I won't let other people see me."
>"Please tell me I'll be able to see other people soon."
>"I'm done! I'll go with Erryk and Melara and get real friends!"

They do have a plot.

"Please tell me I'll be able to see other people soon." You say, some tears well up in your eyes. You trust Old Buck, he's taken you in and given you food all these days. He's doing what's best for you, right?

Old Buck gives you a big, ear to ear smile. "Rhae. I promise you. You'll see other people when you're ready to."

You nod vigorously. "Thanks, Old Buck." You tell him. The two of you return to your daily and mundane chores. Young Buck's progressing and the mule seems to be less intent on biting you at first sight.

After a whole month. You continue practicing your sneaking with the visitors that come around. They keep trying to convince Old Buck to let in kids for apprenticeship as they trade some food with him. It seems like they only come around to try to convince him. Weird. What's Old Buck got that needs to be taught to others? You never really pried, as that would unveil your sneaking about. You've really bonded with Young Buck too, Old Buck complains that he gets along better with you than with him. It is true that you spend lots more time with him since Old Buck must care for the mule, go to the village, and care for the chickens.

You've also gone with him to his fields, they've got a great view over the village, though Buck told you to remain behind him at all times, he seemed scared of someone else seeing you. The fields are relatively small and on top of a nice hill. And all that separates it and the village is a small sparse forest with lots of annoying plants on its floor.

On a day of rest, when night comes, you get a mischievous idea. Old Buck doesn't have to know that you can see other people. And other people don't have to know that you see other people. You can totally sneak out at night when the old man's sleeping and start seeing some other folks! You trust your abilities, and considering those people came on foot with a bag with lots of vegetables, surely Pallas isn't that far away! And if something bad comes close to you, you can always use Old Buck's quarterstaff that you'll take as a precaution! All you have to do is head to the fields, you know where they are, and approach through the small forest. If you stay in it, no way they'll see you.

>Try to sneak out at night and head to Pallas. You'll see so many people! [Sneaking test to leave house]

Though the creeping temptation of heading out into the night yourself and observing the village is somewhat strong, you still want to trust Old Buck. Surely he wants you to stay home for a reason, maybe when you're a bit older you'll be able to head off with him to the village and finally present yourself. You clutch your chest and try to sleep on your hay-filled mattress, thinking about Young Buck barking at chickens.

For the next few months, you continue Young Buck's training. At this point, Old Buck is little more than an overseer, his dog is more yours than his, it would be fully yours if it didn't depend on Old Buck for food. Old Buck has begun allowing you escapades into the forest. There's a small stream heading further down into the path in front of the shack. There, you and Young Buck learn to swim together. It doesn't have much of a current nor is it deep. Old Buck told you that the stream merges with a small river downcurrent and eventually leads into the lake of the God's Eye. He says that in the middle of that lake there is a small island that no one has ever returned from. Apparently the children of the forest, a people who were in Westeros before even the Northmen, make their home there. And they don't like visitors!

You laughed at the elder's tale. He also told you about how the First Men came around first, then the Andals with the Seven pointed Star, but Westeros actually belonged to the Children of the Forest before all of that. That was so many years ago, he says, that not even the Valyrian Empire had risen. He told you a little about it too, how all those dragons soared the sky and conquered all of Essos. You wonder why a Valyrian like you is here in Westeros, in the lands of some lordling called Birch.

All those stories you listen to intently. Old Buck seems to really trust you since you haven't done anything bad, at least that he knows of. You know so much more about the world you live in now, and you really cherish the evenings you spend with Old Buck and Young Buck watching the stream flow. Young Buck sleeping and Old Buck telling you about all these great people, about your supposed ancestors. He says that your violet eyes make you the most special of them all, since only the true Valyrians ever had them.

In another evening by the stream you feel inquisitive. The water's currents are starting to bore you. You wonder if there's something you could ask Old Buck now that more time has passed.

>Ask something to old buck

I'm going to sleep, I'm hoping to run again tomorrow, so ask away all the questions while I sleep. When I start again tomorrow I'll answer questions for Buck then continue.

"Teach me how to fight now, Buck! You can trust me, I've been good! What if those people come around when you're not here? I need to know how to fight!"
>>
>>2814064
While Old Buck lays down on the grass, straw hat on his head, you spring up and look at him with a firm glare. Your small hands on your hips, to denote your seriousness. You look down to your garments, a pair of linen pants and a small linen tunic, grey, black and, most of all, dirty. Your silver hair tied into a ponytail, dirtier and longer than it's ever been. Everything seems in place to finally say it.

"Teach me how to fight now, Buck! You can trust me, I've been good! What if those people come around when you're not here? I need to know how to fight!" You say with your eyes closed, a little bit of fear rings in your voice. You know how Old Buck doesn't like talking about fighting, he's given you a reprimand or two for wrestling with the dog instead of playing with it, and you *know* it wasn't because he didn't what your clothes getting dirty.

Old Buck's mouth wrings into a angry position. You've learned to tell when Old Buck gets mad and when he's happy. He's mad. The old man removes his hat, his hair is short now, he cut it a month ago, but he still has his mighty beard and he looks at you with a scowl. "How many times do I have to tell you this, girl? You're not ready yet."

Young Buck, meanwhile, continues his deserved rest on the shore of the stream. His head resting on his front legs.

>"I *am* ready. And I'm done with you telling me I'm not! Teach me how to fight!" [Persuasion test, Hard]

"Fine, whatever you say." You let go of your strongman's pose and sit back down on the ground. You're angry, sure you are, but Old Buck must've his reasons. You really wish he'd share them with you though. You pick up a small stick and start tugging around on the ground to pass the time.

"It's good that you're like this." Old Buck says while putting his hat back on his face. "Honest and strong-willed, but not stubborn like an auroch." His old smile appears. "I've promised to teach you how to fight, and I will. When you're ready."

You nod again. You feel like it's an empty promise, but Old Buck is how he is. You don't want to make him regret ever taking you in, it would hurt much more than this simple refusal to train you. Young Buck gets on his feet and approaches you, laying down besides you. You pet his head, appreciating his support.

Old Buck spares a look at the two of you. "Y'know, Dog's really taken a liking to you, Rhae."

A smile appears on your face. "He's not called Dog, Buck. He's called Young Buck." As soon as you say Young, the dog perks up a little, not seeing a command from his young mistress, he lays his head back down on your leg this time, letting out a small sigh.

The old farmer hides his face under the straw hat again. "If that is so, then it means he's yours." He says.

You look at Young Buck. According to Old Buck, the dog's seen 2 namedays. A gift from his sons back in Duskendale. The animal's grown strong and hardy, but it's not easy to feed. He needs meat, and there's days where he has to go out and hunt to get his fill. He's a great hunter though, at least from what you've seen when some rats came into the shack. You're surprised by how much you know about the animal. You remember when you had to ask Old Buck about absolutely everything relating to a dog's behaviour, now you know it as more of a second nature. At least for dogs. You also know that most animals are scared of dogs, except for wolves, of course.

The rest of the evening passes by. When you return home, Old Buck stretches while he passes by the door frame of his shack. You tie up Young Buck outside and go in as well, getting to the vegetables to prepare dinner. A soup is quickly prepared, something easy on the stomach to sleep better and spend less. Buck's also taught you lots about cooking and making do with what you have. You know what berries are edible and the like, too.

While you dine, Buck seems serious, as if thinking about something. "Rhae." he says. "From tomorrow on, you'll start climbing trees and running. If you can beat Young Buck in an honest race and climb the old pine tree by the river, all the way to the top, I'll teach you how to fight." His smile doesn't return, he seems somber and serious while telling you this. "If you accept this, I won't treat you like a girl any longer."

You gulp, you'd never seen Buck this serious. You wonder if you're ready for this.

"I will. I'll climb the old pine tree, I'll run faster than Young Buck. I'll become strong." You tell Buck, your eyes are full of fervor. Old Buck then regains his smile, though it's more forced than before.

"Then do it. Make me proud, Rhae." He says.

From that day on, you spent hours every day climbing trees, small and big, wanting to reach some branch or another. You ran alongside Young Buck, trying to turn his happy trot into a full blown run to reach you. He sure did reach you, but you could hardly endure the run as long as he did. Though the dog made sure to give you some support by licking the salty sweat off your face. Your clothes got torn and your body was covered in filth at the end of every day. But at the next day, you washed, you endured the pain, and you continued, feeling the soreness of the days of strenuous physical exercise.

The months passed and so did the training under the watchful of Old Buck. His sour expressions were sometimes turned into smiles. Your tree climbing skills were not quite ready to assault the pine tree, nor did you run faster than Young Buck, but Old Buck did show surprise in the final month, when you seem to hold on and on to your run. You simply kept running, so much so that Young Buck finally started focusing more on the ground ahead than on you. A sign of a dog becoming increasingly tired, or so Old Buck tells you. He said that he hadn't seen a child run that much time in his life.

You give out a proud smile, Old Buck smiles warmly again. You realized that Old Buck barely ever smiled like that now. Ever since your training started, he seemed more like a trainer than... Well... A father? You're not quite sure what he is to you, but he loves you and you love him back, that's for sure.

Old Buck gives you a slap on the back as you head home after the last race with the dog. "You know, you've grown in the past few months. If you keep growing like that you'll end up becoming a tall, gallant woman."

You smile a calm smile, with the passing months, it seems that everything had gotten more and more serious, so you deeply enjoy moments like these with Old Buck. "Do I want to become a tall gallant woman?" You ask him.

He ponders for a bit. "Well... I imagine you do. You've done so much training in such a short time. You're not the best I've ever seen, but you have potential to go far, if you keep at it. And people who keep at it grow tall and strong."

You gaze up at the evening sky, a few bloodred tendrils still grasping at the night's embrace. "Old Buck, what am I gonna be when I'm older?"

Buck looks at you surprised. "Where does that question come from?" He waits for an answer, but you don't grant him one. You don't know where it comes from, it's just there. Buck continues. "Well, what would you like to be?"

You think for a moment. You're not sure, but you feel like telling it like this:

>"Something like a knight. Strong, always able to defeat bad people."
>"A ruler, maybe. I want to give people good lives and help them when they're unwell."
>"A mediator. I want to convince others with words instead of hitting them. I don't want anyone to have bad times."

"A ruler, maybe. I want to give people good lives and help them when they're unwell."

Old Buck grins, you hadn't see a grin like that on him, it seems mocking. "I guess that's just how Valyrians are, eh? Us Westerosi smallfolk are more about the simple life."

You look at Buck with a curious stare. "But I'm part of the smallfolk too. I'm not part of a House or anything. I'm sure it's not about being or not being Valyrian."

Buck replies with a teacher's tone. "Of course it isn't all about it. But the Maesters I knew told me that the Valyrians had always had a regal glow to them. Something that set them apart from the others."

You take a look at your hair as he says that. It's true you've seen no other Valyrians, and as far as you know, the only Valyrians like you that remain are the Targaryens, the Celtigar, and the Velaryons. Something inches in the back of your mind though.

"Buck, how many Maesters did you meet?"

Buck is taken by surprise. "Well... Lord Birch's Maester comes around when sickness is afoot. And uh... Yeah, in Duskendale I met the bigger Maester there, also went around treating the smallfolk. They were open to talk with me."

You get in front of Buck, walking backwards while doing so, to get a good look at his eyes. "I thought Maesters were more reclusive than that. Plus, why would they talk to you about things like that? I think taking care of sick people is more important."

Your inquisitiveness is making Buck nervous. When he looks at you, he seems to look away instantly as to avoid your eyes. "Rhae, stop looking at me like that."

You realize that your stare is making him uncomfortable. You've concentrated so much on Buck and his reactions, analyzed him to the bone. He's lying, that's for sure, there's something he doesn't want to tell you about himself. And you want to know. You will know it. Yet Buck seems like he's not enjoying this at all.

"Buck, I'd really really like it to know the truth." Your tone is harsh, commanding even, but mixed in with the playfulness of a child.

For a moment, you see fear in Buck's eyes. But he lets out a long sigh. "Valyrians really are special aren't they..." He says, a hint of sadness dropped into his voice.

"Fine, fine. I'm not simply 'Buck', though I wish I was. I'm ser Harlan Slumberhall, from Slumberhall, in the Stormlands. I used to be a peasant, got drafted, fought in the Ninepenny kings war then got knighted by my lord back then, Lord Hendrick Grandison of Grandview. That's it." You now see sadness in Buck's face. "I'm a hedge knight. I came to live out my days here with my sons, but they left to Duskendale around ten years ago and I haven't seen them since. They refused to live the way I lived, it was too simple, they wanted to make something of their lives and of this 'House' that I supposedly started."

He looks at you wearily. "I saw another opportunity to show someone the good things about living a simple life, free of worries. I have my name as a hedge knight to refuse drafts from Lord Birch, so I don't have to go to war. The people of Pallas respect me and want to gain favors with me, so they treat me good with their prices. My life is safe here. I wanted someone to inherit that, then you showed up out of the blue. But of course, you're Valyrian, you're destined to greatness." He gives out a sigh, the longest sigh you've ever heard.

Your curiosity is completely satisfied, overblown even. You feel like Buck had been wanting to tell you that for a while. There's things you didn't quite get, it was honestly a whole lot to chew, a bit more than you bargained for. But somehow you made it get it out of his system.

>Why did Lord Hendrick knight you?

>Why did Lord Hendrick knight you?

"So why did your Lord Hendrick knight you?" You ask as you return to Buck's side, walking with him.

"Well, lots of effort, really. I always tried to be the first and foremost servant of Lord Hendrick. I... defeated many enemies for him, always sticking as close to him as possible. But the big turning point was when I defeated ser Derrick Fossoway, a man from the band of the Nine. The leaders of the Ninepenny Kings." His mind seems lost in thought. "When I defeated him, Lord Hendrick hailed me as the bravest man in all of Westeros. Though I'd say that merit went to ser Barristan Selmy, considering that ser Selmy was being hailed by the King himself for killing Maelys Blackfyre."

You look forward, taking in the information slowly. "Then why'd you come all the way out here?"

Buck scratches his head. "Well, I was famous in the Stormlands, real famous. They wanted to take me to the court of the Baratheons. You remember, right? The rulers of the Stormlands? They wanted to turn my family into warriors for the household guard of Storm's End."

Your mouth opens wide in surprise. "You told me household guards always have their life cut out for them, why didn't you go?!"

Buck smiles weakly. "Well. I didn't want that life. It's risky, if the Baratheons get on someone's bad side, as their impulsive ways often leads them to, I'd get shunned somewhere in Westeros. Maybe some bad people would try to come and get me for being the new big man in Storm's End. Maybe they'd do bad things to my children." Buck seems irked at the thought of it. "I didn't want that. When I refused, Lord Hendrick got real mad at me and I, in turn, got real mad at lord Hendrick. We argued and I left with my family. I wandered around with them and Lord Birch was the first lord I met that hadn't heard of my exploits, and thought I was just a simple hedge knight that could watch over Pallas for him."

"Watch over Pallas?"

"Just making sure that thieves are punished and the like, those times are past me though, but lord Birch never told me to leave his lands, so here I remain."

You smile at Old Buck. "Thank you for telling me this, Buck." you tell him, excited as can be.

Buck nods. "Well, I hadn't told anyone in a while, so forgive me if it made you sleepy."

You shake your head. "Nuh-uh. I'm happy that you told me all this."

With a smile, Buck responds. "Well, now you know why I didn't want to turn you into a warrior. It reminds me of bad times. You know, I don't think I ever told you my kids' names. The old one's Clifford and the young one's Ronnet, they've got a difference of three namedays."

You wonder if you'll meet Clifford and Ronnet. The other two Slumberhalls apart from Buck, or well... Harlan. "Do you know what became of them?"

Buck shakes his head. "Never did go to Duskendale myself, and they never came to visit me. I simply found it awkward, is all."

As you reach home. You do the same old tired thing of tying Young Buck and preparing dinner.
>>
>>2816540

Your training with Old Buck goes admirably. His tips really do work and you redouble your efforts to try and impress him. A few months pass by, straining your body to its limits. By then, you can outrun Young Buck for a small amount of time, though you can tell that the dog isn't taking it as seriously as you'd wish, Old Buck still gives the okay.

Old Buck tells you that he wants to celebrate your nameday. You don't know your nameday, so you decided to make it the day when he found you. It's been nearly a year too. Old Buck takes a good luck at you. "You look like you've seen one and ten namedays, counting the one you've spent with me."

And it's come with some changes, you've grown tall and thin and your chest's begun sprouting. You ask Old Buck if it can be stopped. He shakes his head. "Why do you think women aren't supposed to fight? Your bodies are made to stay home."

You pout at Old Buck. "I'll be a better fighter than you ever were, Buck!" You tell him. Then stomp off to continue your tree climbing training, heading out to the small field over the hill that Buck's got. There, you climb the closest and tallest tree you find, which isn't too big. You make sure to tie your hair on your back, so if someone spots you, they won't think too much about it. No one's spotted you yet.

You perch yourself atop the tree and enjoy the view of Pallas below you and Lord Birch's hall at the hill behind Pallas. You can see people moving around, they remind you of little ants, though you know they're much more than that. You're sad that you can't meet them.

Roll 3d6, best of two. DC 13.

Damn, this is a big coincidence. You tied the DC twice with the exact same result.

While enjoying the view during the day's dusk, you hear a noise coming from the bushes below.

Oh. Oh no. You think. Someone is coming.

You try climbing down from the trees to sneak away but it's too late. A small child, thin and brown-haired with roughed up clothes comes out of the bush right below you. You grab a hold of your ponytail, making sure it's behind you, hopefully he won't notice your hair color. You really regret not cutting it at some point. He seems to be your age, and is looking at you in shock.

"Who- Who the fok are you?" He asks, his voice cracking multiple times.

--- Thread 1 End ---

So this quest is more fun to write than I first imagined. I'll probably do some more of it but I'm not sure when. I'll tell you boys in this thread. I'll also announce it in the QM discord so hop on over there if you wish (They have a link in their permanent thread here in /qst/).
