"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

7th Kriegstrom Platoon

Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; madmen born and raised in the Company like Master-Sergeant 'Bad Hand' Hadrien; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ (because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows); aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before. Nevermind the fekking Dragon.

They’re your men (and women). Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

The Fallen
The annals record those who have died in the line of duty under your command. Those whom you have failed.

‘Auntie’ Goodkind Throat ripped out by a Grenn wolfman during the storming of Kresden. Her modest savings are donated to help equip the new Black Company recruits with decent boots. More important to a common soldier than a decent blade.

Pietre Verdun Struck down from behind in the storming of Kresden. No one saw where the blow came from. He never got to prove to the world he was the best. His responsible brother Gabriel died at Prince's hands on the Kresden walls.

Unhappy Sam Mauled to death by the Grenn during the storming of Kresden.Who knows if the dead are more or less happy than the living.

‘Snake’ Summarily executed for disobeying orders. Members of 7th Platoon refused to elaborate further. Fekking elves. Prince never gets over his hate of them.

[2/2]

‘White Bitch’ Tara Slain in the defence of the 7th Platoon campsite by Neumunster ambushers during the Northern Offensive.Tara never would retire(desert) to a cushy summer villa. Who knows whether she would have been a good mother or foisted her unborn child off to the first orphanage. She did genuinely enjoy Prince's attentions, while it lasted.

Twice-in-One-Day Skewered by Neumunster swordsmen during Day One of the Siege of Kresden.I don't think I even have a picture for this guy.

’Kid’ Hewn in twain by a Neumunster halberdier during Day One of the Siege of Kresden. Prince's descent into darkness didn't really scare Kid. They will never roll their eyes at you again. '...'

Regrets-the-Rain Struck down by a holy weapon of the Chevalisse Paladin orders on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden. Man, Wildborn don't do well in the 7th. Unless they're Smiles.

Arlen Rivers Thrown from the walls by a Chevalisse Paladin on Day Two of the Siege of Kresden. He didn't live to see his fellow 'Dozen' take the Legio eagles. They like to think he would be proud.

Vendis Durvano Trampled to death in the mad rush to escape the Western Gate slaughter on Day Four of the Siege of Kresden. He died a thousand miles from the sea, cursed landlubber luck. He'd never show Joker the sunny beaches and warm waters.

Legless Jenny Consumed body and soul in an abominable Cultist experiment, binding her to a corrupted Albani Warmachine. Not this one. Not today.

'Jack' Marcus Slain while retaking the North Tower, his sacrifice saved his squad and perhaps the Company. He was a good LCPL for Prince. Odd that a man so patriotic and proper-Neumunster would have fought so hard to essentially destroy it.

I'm just working on a little something for this thread as we go, but I figured I'd share the origin for this quest.

Obviously, it started out with reading the Black Company books way back when. A band of competent mercenaries with their own code of honour, signing up with the BBEG and honouring the contract? Sign me up.

It wasn't until maybe 4 years ago that I started scrawling actual quest ideas in an ear-bitten ADF training exercise. We had spent all day sitting around waiting for our transport to pick us up from... I don't even remember, a shooting range way out in the bush? I had 8 solid hours of just sitting on my arse, huddling in whatever shade I could find. Thus began the stirrings of BCQ.

I think I still have the notebook around here.

Ah, yes. I'm still surprised that was the most upvoted thread in the entire archive.
>>

>When did you sign on with BCQ? What made you decide to stick around?

It was during the Storming of Sarsburg and Bad Hand has just made the bet with Prince that he was going to sleep with Syka. All during a demon summoning the size of a city, that I wondered at that point just what the fuck was going on.

(2) Ask a question

Saint or the Captain bossman? Who did YOU want to grab a piece of Corporal Aeron?
>>
>>2799798
Nice. I had not intended for the siege to take 1/4 of the entire quest. That said, I had not intended for the Company to actually hold off the Free Alliance attacking Kresden.

>>2799808
Aha, a veteran!

Certainly by the later stages of the quest it had become clear that Prince and Saint had more of a mentor-student role, which is perhaps surprising given that the Captain was nowhere to be seen from thread #12 to #26.

So yeah, i was a fan of holding a torch for the Captain. It made sense for the MC -and- it presented me with the perfect opportunity to push players and see just what they'd do for the Captain. I'm still not sure whether Prince's loyalties lie with the Captain or the Company itself. Perhaps the latter after the rejection.
>>
>>2799777
> (1) Answer a question

Good character development w/ guaranteed eventual loss of company members due to the system. Minimizing losses is a different beast than avoiding losses, and the best part is you get cocky until Kid dies.

And as much as I've bitched about Jenny earlier, I have always respected playing Kids death straight up, no punches pulled. The players *deserved* that one because of the choices, what can I say Dice ain't fair.

> (2) Ask a question

Did you have the siege duration set ahead of time, and if so did you stick to it? Because that was an emotional wringer. I feel like without the breaks, people would have burnt out hard.
>>
>>2799832
More levers to pull and buttons to push. I liked it.
I liked it better when the Master Vampire Brother bit it and exploded on that critical dice roll though.

Also yes, I was one of the anons to vote for NOT saving the orphans.
>>
>>2799832
>I had not intended for the siege to take 1/4 of the entire quest
To be fair, sieges take a long ass time to finish regardless of who wins or loses.

See, I hate you. Saving the orphans was almost like the fast-track route to actually siding with the Free Alliance as respectable mercs than could maybe be bought over from the BBEG. This is way before 'Elia von Harti' was a potential recruit though, I had envisioned her as you contact in the Free Alliance. The thing is, Count Vermillio was supposed to be the same for the Necromancer's inner council.

So when players lied about the orphans, but spare Elia but also manage to kill off Count Vermillio... well I have no idea what the fuck to do. Players had managed to burn both bridges to the actual politics of the quest somehow. At least you got Saint out of that mess...

>>2799836
>Kids death
Cheers mate, I've see far too many quests pull their punches when it comes to character deaths. I think making the mortality of the quest very clear from the start is perhaps what drove anons down full darkness route.

And no, that was not my intention to have the siege go on that long. I had honestly expected to crack the players after 3 threads, 4 max. You know, when I still had the Albani Warmachines and Asgorga wasn't wrecking shit.

My plan had been to force the Company to flee, cut a deal or make a last stand at the manor Alamo style. Instead you bastards somehow still kept going strong right up until your late employer rocked up.

Lieutenant Prince

Many years from now successive annalists would begin to refer to the chapters covering the Black Company’s period of service to the Necromancer as the 'Deadman's Campaign' or the ‘Book of the Dead’, a particularly dark time for both the Company and the world. It was during this campaign that a relatively unknown junior-NCO would rise from the ranks of the Company to become the ‘Black Prince’, the greatest warrior the Black Company would ever know.

Historians, scholars and mystics from around the world would speculate and theorise on who this Prince was and how he came to be. A commonly accepted consensus is that this mercenary Prince was an heir to the throne, though whether it was the throne of Neumunster or some far-off land is much debated in academic circles. Not all agree that he was ever fully human, many scholars argue that he was a creation of the Necromancer. A creature bred and modified for the singular purpose of seeking out and crushing the strongest of those who opposed his master.

Although CPL and LT Prince as a man was a name that would eventually be lost to the march of history, the Black Prince remains a legend that historians continue to argue may never have actually existed. He is a popular figure in folklore and storytelling, stories where disobedient children or foolish nobles somehow anger him and suffer a horrible fate.

The Black Prince would become the Company’s most famous and feared champion. The iron fist of the Captain, her chosen vanguard and her personal executioner. Such would be his reputation that at times the Company would be hired just to ensure that the opposition in any given war or dispute during a campaign didn’t hire them. Few would dare raise arms against them, and those few rarely lived long enough to regret their decision. The Black Prince was an unkillable monster, as pitiless as Below and with a heart twice as dark.

Only the Annals tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but. Only the Annals reveal what it took, what Prince had to sacrifice to protect his Company, the men and women he fought and blood alongside time and time again. If not for Prince’s actions, the Company may well have not survived the trials of the Deadman’s Campaign. In this at least, the truth of Prince’s selflessness and frightening will to win is not lost.

A few pages in hidden tome unknown to most but revered by a few. Read to and guarded by generation after generation of the mysterious and enigmatic mercenary warriors known as the Black Company. Just piece of paper, but also a fragment of immortality.

The Black Prince marches on...

I've read enough of the quest to know that there are no "right" decisions. Only the ones that allowed us to save as many of our own as we could. Nothing more, nothing less.

He made the necessary choices. Right and wrong are perspectives. He achieved his highest priority goals, maybe he could have achieved a better end but he definitely avoided the worst one.

Spitfire, *bitch*. Joker a close second. The Captain is best girl for Prince but TBF he had shit taste, and I use had intentionally there.

This is you, I imagine.

The Black Prince broke with the Dark Father, and still draws most of his power from Below. He is a power in his own right now though, like a dialed down version of the Necromancer, Wild King or Lady Isabella. So if he wants to draw power from something else entirely (like the source of power that the Necromancer siezed in Mask's homeland) he is strong enough in the spiritual realm to do so.

Think of it like morphine or a salve for all the wounds on the soul caused by using Below. It will not heal Prince or Mask, but it will help ease the pain.

>glen cooks books
I only got up to the Many Deaths of the Black Company, which was an emotional train wreck. I knew I would never be able to remain faithful to the setting and I love worldbuilding so I went with an alernate OC setting. Keep the traditions of the Company, place them somewhere else entirely.

In the books the origin of the Black Company itself started out as one such legion that was stranded on another world. So the justification for their being another splinter of it on a separate world is already there.

I don't recall any actual magical beasts or monsters beyond shapeshifters in the books, and I always thought magic was crazy OP. So I changed that up. In short, aside from the Company itself, the setting is absolutely nothing like the books.

Master-Sergeant 'Bad Hand' Hadrien

In later years SGT Bad Hand would refer to the Deadman Campaign as '...The funnest gig I ever had. Plenty of violence for everyone. Best sex too.' Much to the Annalists relief, the records of Bad Hand's experience with Superior Syka remain vague and lacking in explicitly graphic detail.

Bad Hand would remain the faithful friend of Prince for the rest of his life, his most solid and unstable senior-NCO. Bad Hand never really understood just what happened to Prince, the changes he went through. In his private thoughts Bad Hand would miss the old flesh and blood comrade he had fought back-to-back with time and time again. He was especially dismayed at Prince's lack of interest in cards or whoring. In Bad Hand's opinion his brother Prince spends far too much time brooding and playing that damn foreign contraption. But family remains family, and Bad Hand will not stop loving his brother just because he has changed.

Had CPL Prince not risked his neck and ventured out from the safety of the Sarsburg Palace, Bad Hand would have fallen victim to the daemonic attack along with 150 other brothers and sisters in black.

Oh man, it was around the time Prince took over Kresden. One of my first memories of live threads were almost dying to have wild sex and beating the crap out of Asgorga.
Good times.

>What made you decide to stick around?
Solid writing. The characters and their interactions. The setting, and the very dark and deadly feeling to it, as if it wasbreathing down our neck every time. The chance to play for the evil side without descending into a shitfest like so many other Quests.

>How do you feel about Prince’s descent into darkness? Did he make the right choice?
Brutal. Heartbreaking. Necessary for the Company to survive. Perhaps if we changed side instead of letting the Heir die it would have been different but the Company would have been cheapened by the experience.

>Who is best girl?
Kiranovafag here. Damn you Forgotten, why did you dicked us over even after we bet Prince's soul? It was beautiful, but it hurt so deep.

>Ask a question
I have so many questions. Questions for days.

- Mask's terrible secret, the one who would have given us a hint on the Necromancer.
- Manifest Destiny and a Company of Heroes. Stats of these Perks and what they would have meant for Prince, the Company and the world.
- Our Black Heart and Soft Heart scores. Were they just choices to see how Prince developed, or there was more to it? Same for Black Heart Domination and Destruction
- Who the fek thought it was a good idea to chain a Dragon in the fekking basement of the Imperial family?
>>
>>2800341
> and I always thought magic was crazy OP. So I changed that up.

Actually I would say that you definitely didn't. There were very few OP sorcerers in the books, and except for Lady later on the Black Company sorcerers were specifically stated to be pretty much Hedge Wizard level. Just very experienced, very cunning, and outright bastards.

And the Necromancer and Syka were totes fucking OP, and I assume the Archmage was as well.

I mean.

There's a reason we spent so many bag of tricks to no-sell the mages during the assault.
>>
>>2799777
>When did you sign on with BCQ? What made you decide to stick around?
The thread where we capture the princeling heir. Good writing but most importantly excellent, well thought mechanics. You don't often see Qms putting an effort to create a balanced and fun mechanic.

(1) Answer a question
>When did you sign on with BCQ? What made you decide to stick around?
I think it was around the time we saved Kid from getting thrown to those dog things by the cultists wayyy back when... it's been a while.
As for what made me stay, I really love the character deaths leading to all those dark, tough choices. Most of the hard ones had a significant debate around them which is fun to participate or stir shit in, as per your preference. I haven't seen another quest do the whole "road to hell is paved with good intentions" shebang nearly as well. More generally, I enjoy suffering in games.
(2) Ask a question
>Anything you like!
Not directly related to the quest but how's working out your schedule going? I think one of my only complaints with the quest is it can be hard to remember what happened last thread if they only happen once every 1 or 2 months... Though that's not a criticism of you per se, I'm sure there wasn't much you could do.
Also this anon >>2801000 has good questions.
>>2800135
>How do you feel about Prince’s descent into darkness? Did he make the right choice?
Loved it. As I said above this quest did the hard choices justice and there were actual tangible consequences to taking the "evil" but more powerful route beyond an edgier hairstyle and the theme song changing to minor key.
As for the right choice... most of these epilogues seem to indicate a net positive impact from Prince, so I'd say so.

Keep in mind I don't think I ever put down a choice that I wasn't at least willing to write. Over time Prince developed a real character and the general conversation options reflected that. I especially loved it when anons would argue that -they- would do (A) but they know Prince would choose (B), either because that is what the MC would do or because they knew (A) was relying on meta knowledge. I like that Prince wasn't just a self-insert, he became his own character with his own personality.

>Could Prince and the Captain ever have worked?
Yes. The closest you guys came was either after Skaldening. You had given the Company a fighting chance in the coming siege and demonstrated your loyalty.

Black Prince locked that route out. His Avatar would -probably- have locked it out too, Captain ain't mothering now hellspawn children. His Champion would have been the only route that may have still have worked out of the dark paths. I think the vote may have gone differently had I let that be known.

You guys did surprisingly well managing to keep the peace in Kresden. I had half a thread planned around either a poorly or well-led riot. Securing the populace and loyalty of the reinforcements put paid to that.

I think I said this several times, but I loved that anons knew the choices they were making weren't going to end well for Prince but the motivation was right to go ahead anyway.

-Mask's transformation into the first revenant as his homeland dies around him. The secret wasn't about Mask, but about what he knew. He knew the other half of the Necromancer's name.

-I never wrote up Manifest Destiny, even when the heir was still alive that had been closed off. Company of heroes I had some notes on, but I never finalised the actual perks. I had the basic idea to include a Battle Brother +10DC for every order you gave and an order to roll on the casualty table for re-rolls to battle progress (with no extra casualty if you lost). I didn't end up writing up the table as I did for the darker routes.

-I'm actually halfway through counting those. I'm up to Kresden so far. They didn't have any mechanical benefits, if that is what you mean. I plan to include something like it in KSV but with hidden mechanical bonuses.
Ironically, I think Softy would have won out overall if not for the Domination and Destruction choices on the tally.

-Skarling Kingbreaker thought it was a good idea to keep some eggs after a bit of dragonslaying, of course. I don't know if anons picked up on this, but Saint took care of Asgorga as part of her palace Heigelen duties. A better question may be who the fek thought it was a good idea to unleash said Dragon?

>>2801042
There isn't any secret about it, a lot of the perks for the opponents were just tweaked versions of Prince's own skills or orders. A lot of it was bullshit, just what sounded right given the bonuses or debuffs being handed out. I groaned aloud when Prince rolled 100 to convince Asgorga because I hadn't even begun to draw up his combat stats (and flight would have to be a factor too). Then that nat 1 came...

You'd think becoming the host of a Mad God would turn Kiranova off more than Black Prince, but hindsight is 20/20 I guess.

Also, tell us more about that year in service of the Necromancer in case we accepted his deal. It seemed like he had something specific in mind.

Sorry for the infrequency of my updates. I will continue to post intermittently throughout the week and answer any questions you of have me.

----------------------------------------------

Corporal Hirstun of Ligh

Even if CPL Hirstun of Ligh would never live to see an independent Northern Coast, he would at least die knowing he had been instrumental in this final revenge against their Neumunster oppressors. He would continue to gripe about the attitude of the 'young uns' in his squad.. Somewhat ironically, even the newly reformed 1st Squad would never actually have a dozen members. Sparring with Hirstun or one of his more brave 'Dozen' would be one of the few past-times the Black Prince would indulge himself in on some mornings.

Hirstun of Ligh would not survive the machinations of the Rakasha Raj contract, but he had never expected for the cause to be old age. He was content in his twilight years, spending much of his last days kicking back on the sunny beaches of Rakasha, with either the non-animated Legio eagle or a pretty local thing sitting in his lap. For many years after his death, 1st Squad would continue to be prefer the aficionado name "Hirstun's Dozen". They would develop their own traditions around the name itself, 1st squad would have a reputation for having less than 100 years battle experience between its members at any given point.

Hirstun died a happy old man, but his Dozen lives on.

>necro boy origin
I never gave much thought to the Necromancer other than being a rogue that fled with forbidden knowledge from the Isle of Mages. He signed up with some sort of cult (hence his brother Vermillio and sister Syka). Saint Judas betrayed them to Skarling, who kicked his arse. The rogue sorceror and what was left of his coven disappeared until Sabari penisula was turned into the Sabari islands (to get a mcguffin) and Mask's homeland was destroyed.

Mask was a victim, the earliest successful undead experiment of the Necromancer. Mask had a real rough time, the Necromancer would frequently test how far he could retain an undead's sentience and combat effectiveness while ensuring they would obey every command. Like killing their family.

>good ending
The Company surviving -is- the good ending of course. If I'm being serious though, one good ending would have been turning on the Necromancer to help the Free Alliance. The other good ending would have been to befriend Count Vermillio and help curb his insane sisters genocidal influence. Ironically, had Vermillio survived fighting the FA would have taken a backseat due to him not being an incompetent fek of a commander. The Black Company, after a couple of FA missions, would have instead worked on the internal power struggle with Syka (or the Necro-boi if you failed to win him over) being the end boss.

Instead of Elves/Legionnaires/Paladins for the final battle you would have more likely been siding with vampires against Cultists/Daemons/Corrupted-Mercs.

After Sarsburg I always knew that things were going to be fekked one way or another. There was no one to reign in Sykas influence that your Employer would listen to, and up until the heir you had very little to offer the Free Alliance to switch sides.

>>2801177
>>2801180
When the employer was chosen I had not drawn up any sort of map, even in my head. It was dependant on who anons would want to campaign against.

If you have voted to start in Helenwood then we would have been have Full Metal Skeleton in elven-vietnam. With the Wild King, it would have been like bloody Catachan from 40k. Isle of Mages would have been D-Day.

I think if the Wild King had been your employer against Sarsburg that would have been very intriguing. Very difficult as well, because what do beasts know about siege warfare?

Also if we picked the spoopy Ghost armor instead of the yucky face meat from flipping off the Dark Father would it have changed anything? Because no matter what I still think Prince being a nigh immortal clanky cranky ghost sounds cool.

Also also did we turn Jenny into a new and improved Killing Machine again? Because at this point Jenny having one of the highest kill counts is tradition.

Good to see another vet. I particularly loved the paranoid shit-stirring, sometimes it was warranted and sometimes it was not.

>schedule
Yeah, I'm screwed with this full time firm work now. I just cannot commit to having an entire day off, and once a month just will not cut it. The next quest will have to be run off a slow burn one post a night schedule.

I will admit, there were a couple of days were not running was definitely my fault. A job or injury is a legitimate excuse, mighty hangovers are not. I just hope no one really noticed when i was QMing while still drunk.

>Saint
She was a pleasant surprise. I know some anons think we ruined her, but I think she turned out alright. Prince's tutelage has taught her some hard damn lessons, but players also ensured there was enough softness idealism left in there so that she didn't hit "crawling in my skin" levels. In my opinion, she is better than Prince.

The next BCQ quest, likely based in the Rakasha Raj to the far south, will feature the hostility/rivalry between Saint and the Captain as a major focus point.

>>2801228
>Spitefire

>>2801411
>near daily
Shit, I do feel bad for the gaps between threads. Err, quality over quantity right? Hehe fek.

>>2801416
I really wanted Kid back desu, but I knew I couldn't let that choice be easy. The Necromancer would have had an interest in Black Prince being his weapon of choice against some of the more heavy hitters like Lady Isabella or the Wild King. Given his current power level I do not think he is worried about the Warlord at all.

His Avatar would have come would serious problems of its own, mainly being that no one would no who was in control of Prince at any given point. You would essentially be in Asgorga's position by relying on the Dark Father to not be a dick and let you retain control most of the time. And who knows if the Dark Father wouldn't just murderize anyone for anything at anytime.

>>2801534
Of course, and I think I promised it beforehand. Unlike KSV quest I don't have a pretty looking table sitting around and you can tell it was a work in progress for a long time. Take a look at that squad combat mechanics in the early threads for an example, they were shit house.
>>
>>2801583
I shall attempt such a task my friend and I will try to succeed. Hopefully one day another merc company quest takes the board :P
But if you ever have time, it would be appreciated :D
>>
>>2801571
>Except not pushing their shit in further than a top with a 12" dock
I would like to use this phrase at some point irl. While the Company was switched on, aside from the mission Prince was given in taking Kresden and the surrounding provinces a lot of things were going to shit without Count Vermillio's strategic acumen. The Necromancer and Syka failed to capitalize their gains, led their force straight into the trap at Oxenfurt and even puny Tassenland only capitulated after the Company ambushed their column. If not for the coming winter and other enemies the Free Alliance could have held on indefinitely or at least with only minor losses in territory.
>>
>>2801583
>The next quest will have to be run off a slow burn one post a night schedule.
This is fine. Qst is a good place for it.
>>
>>2801575
A lot depends on what you did with WB. If raised within the Company they would have turned out like a mix between Bad Hand, Page #137 and Saint (she is a sucker for kids, even more so for babies). Which I don't want to think about. Them being friends with Kid would depend on whether you had instructed them or someone else to look after them.

I was happy to leave the question of their anti-christ nature until a much later date so I can honestly say I didn't know how far I would have gone with that.

>spooky ghost vs fugly avocado
That would have been purely aesthetic, sorry.

>Jenny
Have you ever been attacked by a magpie? Now imagine that magpie is twice as big, three times as heavy and has metal talons. Jenny will definitely be racking up some kills. Also, I just realised that I handed you guys a metal version (both meanings) of Tobias from animorphs.

>Furry shit

>>

I remember what post was the most recent when I started following, prince was hiding in the imperial palace, trying to figure out who was possessed by a demon.

I stuck around at first for the cool characters, but after they all died and I personally lost any real reason to feel invested, I just stuck around and mostly lurked to see how the stuff would end.

>Questions
If we took the warlord as the employer, would things have been less darkmagic and more normal? More in line with typical black company at least?
>>
>>2801562
>The Black Company, after a couple of FA missions, would have instead worked on the internal power struggle with Syka (or the Necro-boi if you failed to win him over) being the end boss.
>Vampires being reliable
This would be the darkest timeline.

This question goes far back in the Quest, but did you expect Kriegstorm to win? Had you preferred to write about another branch of the Company, like cavalry? Was there any chargen soldier that wasn't picked, but you really liked for reasons?
>>
>>2801613
Who were your favorites? Did you roll on the casualty table?

>warlord
Much more conventional. However the Warlord would have been using every shaman, hedge-wizard and vassal mage he could get his hands on to offer some defence for himself and his army against the powers of the Wild King and the Necromancer.
>>
>>2801625
>branch
Cavalry would have been the hardest to write for, I think. Ranger I could definitely work with, but Infantry or Kriegstrom were my preference from the start.

>vamps
As for the vampires, they only really started going off the rails when Count Vermillio wasn't there to keep them in line. He essentially would want to keep the Free Alliance intact with Necromancer as the 'ruler' (guy too important to actually rule) and himself and the vampire aristocracy as the actual ruling class.

Blood taxes and typical vampire debauchery would have been dark, but not unholy cultist zealots and genocide dark.

>chargen
I liked some of the scout characters I had drawn up that never saw the light of day. I'm sad people didn't go with Auntie and I'm especially sad she died before I got to write up more cheek-pinching and granny nagging.

Any of the NCOs you chose later would have worked. It would have been fun to write up a Highlander brother, especially against other clansmen.

Not really, though I think there was one player here a while ago who had begun to start up something like it.

-------------------

Trooper Hans Rusti

Throughout his Company career Hans Rusti continued to fight with insane bravery, promoted several times for bravery in the face of the enemy and demoted just as many times for brawling with the 4th Infantry. His complete failure at picking up the common language stifled any real chance of him progressing through the ranks, not that he cared. He would finally die a warrior's death and earn his way to Valkenheim in a most glorious and Annal-worthy fashion. Unfortunately for him this was to be many years and hundreds of frustrated attempts later.

Fighting through the infested streets of Sarsburg and the Skaldening were the best moments by far, but the best thread was when we fought the Highlanders. Shit got crazy.

Speaking of infested streets, I think you implied Page #137 had something to do with an outbreak in Far Ru Sut, and that's where it was 'contracted'. Any details on that?

I liked auntie(I popped out of lurking to ask for that scene with her and a few other girls a few threads back in fact), Verdun, and kid the most at first, then started to get a soft spot for Marcus and the dozen, I'd say I lost investment right after the scene where we killed Tara, (everyone was power gaming saying we would die without her to be a soul snack)
No I never rolled on the table, funnily mostly because I was never around when people died, I would come back from work or bedtime and "OH look you fucks got kid killed for +5dc" or "oh look, one of our best who is also our body guard just got killed in an unlucky roll"
Granted we had some morbidly funny stuff too like "oh look that one dude just got his leg bit off, what luck!"

A question, what would have happened if we let white bitch go?
Would prince have just died?
Would her kid have been prince's or the dark father's?

>Favorite moment
When Kira let her shell down with prince while he was on her sickbed, anons came across as pretty fucking dim but I saw what was happening, it doesn't help that anons voted prince as "hurr Durr everything for the cump'ny" when she was starting to open up in a person to person fashion. That was also a nice little visual image "the queen almost falls but the knight holds her up" or something like that. It just sucks that she had such a bad reaction to post transformation prince, mostly that poor reaction ruined whatever chance they could have had

One of the thing I more deeply regret is having so little time to decide whether to take Nero blind offer or not. >When did you sign on with BCQ? What made you decide to stick around?

-Way too late (I probably started reading at the end of June, or something),
but at least I got too enjoy the whole ride through the archive.

>How do you feel about Prince’s descent into darkness? Did he make the right choice?

-How do I feel? Good, very good.
It's nice that the whole "become a monster for the company sake" journey was an actual journey.
Ok, clarifying: I like that it was played straight.
We wanted bonuses, we didn't want our guys dying: we got them (for the most part).
They had price our fekking emotions and we had to pay it, one way or the other.
That in the end the price that got us the most was the waifu,
and not -damning our soul for all eternity to endless pain if we die- is fekking hylarious. ouch, my poor heart
-Was it the right choice? Debatable. On occasions it felt like the "right" or "only" path, even if it was just "the one with least resistance or risk" kudos for that, it's the right way to present the allure of darkness
It was nice sucker for tragic heroes and anti-heroes, and well played not too edgy, lol saint was the edgiest, and got us some sweet power-ups
but I'm hyped about good-knight-quest (or better yet, wholesome-kight-quest).
Lighter paths were possible, and maybe we could've saved our men anyway but this quest had anons locked on the darker path quite early on.

>Who is best girl?
Come on man, it easy. The one that stayed with us through thick and thin: it's Cape of Command-chan, with her +5 in social always ready.
Jk. I was firmly on the Kira-route, but when you present gun-wielding/doggo-petting-girl it's hard to stay true the path.
Also

>What was your favourite moment/thread?

But maybe ehru-healing. Yeah, that.

That was sweet, but it was actually really funny (until it wasn't, sigh) that everytime we tried too woo her we failed miserably,
but Prince never recognized the signs that she was still interested when he acted professionally.
Once or twice I found myself torned between laughter and banging my head on a wall.
Come on, obviously leading the company is not easy. Obviously the hard-choices weight on her too.
The moment you show yourself as a possible emotional support and dependable ally, you got her. Argh.
And now I am ranting.

I think it was inevitable, though we could have gone about it better at times. I admit, when I started I wanted us to go full father-to-his-men hero and rebel against the Necromancer, but I think this was a much more appropriate ending. It's just that kind of story.

I never much cared for Kid but Bad Hand was a true brother.
>>

I felt that Kid got to much attention for someone as boring as he was, he felt like a minor character getting dragged along. Bad Hand's attitude rubbed me the wrong way, and the whole thing with Syka felt forced.

If she had escaped with the heir she would be kicking back at some sweet villa (depending on how the war went).

If you had spared her life before passing out she would have been recovered by your squaddies, as you had already broken several of her limbs. She would tell them you were ambushed by commandos and it would be up to you to go with that and leave her indebted to you or oust her and let her be executed since the Captain would be present.

If you had failed to beat her in combat before the unbreakable effect wore off you would have died.

The child would, naturally, have been both yours and the Dark Fathers.

Kresden, Town Courtyard, Well into the night

During the concert, Frederich Thalium Bad Hand takes the stage and uses a scavenged Albani vox to amplify his awful singing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AavRk7w19hw

Although the fan girl propped up on a cultist's shoulders near the front of the stage is very clearly a poorly disguised Superior Syka, no one says a word about it.
---------------------------------

Trooper Utred Horst

Utred's reputation as a fighter would often be outweighed by his reputation as a rambunctious troublemaker. Without fail the man was always the first to shout a drink or start a fight. On several occasions Bad Hand or some other sympathetic NCO would have to save Utred, Oliver and Olly Hasselhof (the usual suspects) from the Prince's ire. The annalist makes a note that it's a miracle a man could have escaped death so many times while being so far from a battlefield.

Lance-Corporal Lerrek Jurgensen

Always the most realistic and down to earth of the new Skald recruits, Lerrek Jurgensen would go far in the Black Company. Despite his wild appearance and mercurial temperament, the man had a keen eye for tactics and knowing when courage or discretion was called for. He was not especially keen to die and go to Valkenheim. In fact, as far as he was concerned, he was basically in Valkenheim already. Outliving both his Skald comrades, he would one day take an officer's commission in one of the Infantry platoons.

Trooper Crackfoot

Always a miser, Crackfoot's personality did not change much following the Deadman's campaign. He was the most vocal critic of 'young uns' in the Dozen and would not hesitate to rub in the fate of the Legio Eagles to any uppity Trooper of Neumunster origin. He would also die alongside Hirstun in far-off Rakasha. His end was less peaceful, poisoned by one of the aristocracy there. The 'Dozen' made sure to avenge him.

Trooper Godric Golden

The last surviving member of the original 'Dozen' remained a popular and cheery member of the Kreigstrom for as long as he could serve. He remained a chirpy fellow and a constant source of fairly unbelievable stories for the 'young uns'. He would assist the Annalist in his role of recording the Company's history, with the Annalist constantly checking him for accuracy. His infirmity and poor memory eventually led to a comfortable posting in Supply.
>>
Knight-of-the-Line 'Spitfire' Spicario

Despite her beauty and flamybant fashion sense, the Sabari musketeer was rarely approached by anyone with amorous intentions throughout her career. This may have had something to do with her overgrown pet constantly growling at strangers. Ironically, Spicario would never understand this as the cause for the lack of attention paid to her by the opposite sex. She would also find herself disqualified from several shooting competitions during her travels, usually for using a firearm rather than a crossbow.

The wolfman's attempts to transfer to a squad separate from Spitfire were inevitably frustrated by his inability to speak the common tongue. Eventually he would give up, becoming a loyal companion to the Sabari musketeer and a valuable guard dog. The Grenn had a rapacious appetite, he could often be convinced to do anything for food or a Grenn-treat.

I AM glad that we managed to do the night raid I proposed, even if it ended being rather anticlimactic due to the Necromancer walking in an murdering everything.

I also feel that your crits and range of failure - success were too drastic outside of combat. A lot of the bigger events would have been better resolved with failures or success influencing subsequent parts. Like, if it had been broken down into more less dramatic rolled for actions.

Dice swings changed a LOT of the storyline, sometimes to the point where it felt like the dice were the MC more than anyone else.

>did well
You stuck to the quest.
Welcome in the not!Valkenheim of True Questmasters, those who got to a (sensible) epilogue.
*salute*

Jokes aside, it's mostly good work on the writing: prince and co. stayed resonably IC, once they had an enstabished character.
There was a nice spectrum of types, and fight scenes were respectably detailed.

>On the other end...
Mechanics could use a polish.
Combat was clunky, and dark-path bonuses quite op.
Maybe drunkness was part of the problem, or maybe the fact that the whole plot blew-up in the first siege, but there were instances were there was a lack of focus in the advancement:
there was always a lot to do (the main plotline, the side-quests, troup management, etc...)
And usually it's a good thing, but I felt (more as a reader than a player sadly) that in many cases it was a detraction, as players attenction was gettin' pulled everywhere.
I found it more enjoyable when we were on track for specific objectives.

And maybe some cases could've used less rolls, but it got to feel like your personal style, so...

Those are the first things that come to mind rn.
Still a very good job
>>
>>2803721
>What did I do well as QM?
Your writing style is very good. Good mix of humour with serious shit. Better than average imo
>What did I fek up?
This is tangentially related to Jenny but in general it seemed like you had difficulty keeping track of all the various modifiers everyone had - by the end it was getting pretty unwieldy. Not sure how you organize it but something like an excel sheet could probably help.
>>
>>2803721
>What did I do well as QM?
Other anons have pointed out what you've done right, but I want to add that you also improved through the Quest. Not every QM is willing or capable of that.

>What did I fek up?
A lot of plot threads (Companion Quests, mentoring Kid and Saint, Necromancer's name, etc.), and too little time to explore them. It got a little dispersive at one point.

Skill trees. Don't get me wrong, Tier 4 Upgardes were awesome but the rest was less well-thought. Blackguad skills were too efficient and useful not to use, Officer skills felt weak when it came down to Squad rolls (which brings up the question of how Prince was supposed to be a better leader when this tree's best boost affected *Personal* Combat) and Kriegstorm skills were generally nice, but kinda bland since Blackguard covered the 'Brutal Fighter' aspect.

Corporal 'Hard' Hida, 2nd Squad

The CPL never lost her edge in the years to come. She would, in time, garner a reputation for never failing to complete a mission. No matter the assignment, no matter the cost. Although 2nd Squad would have the highest attrition rate in the Kreigstrom, Prince's original squad would never fail a mission or let their Lieutenant down.

Lance-Corporal Caroline 'Joker' Schuster

Joker had always held disdain for the higher ranks. Despite this, she would excel in her new position in the 4th Infantry and quickly make Corporal before the Black Company even reached Rakasha. Her squad of newbies and fresh faces could hardly believe that their severe and scarred squad leader had earnt her nickname as anything other than an ironic joke. She would often provide a 'common trooper' perspective to Saint when there was a risk of her being 'officer blind' to some situations. She would continue to miss her best mate Vendis Durvano dearly over the years, burying his pirate bandanna on the very Rakasha beaches they promised to visit together.
>>
Trooper Nissar Belhamun

2nd squad would continue to have a high attrition rate, even in relatively peaceful assignments like Rakasha Raj. Despite this, Nissar survived against the odds. After his life was saved for the ninth time by Prince's power, Nissar became convinced the Black Prince was in fact the Prophet Returned. However, given that Nissar was never very religious, this did not change much. Nissar would remain the fastest of friends with Smiles for the rest of his life. Nissar would often use his haphazard magik powers to get the squad out of trouble, whether the threat was combat or social. This rarely worked as intended but he never -actually- killed a fellow squaddie despite coming close several times.

Trooper 'Smiles'

Smiles would be the first Wildborn in history to every venture so far from the Wild to the Rakasha Raj, making him a great curiosity and center of attention. His ruined face was not the last scar the Wildborn warrior would earn during his time in 1st Squad. But he always survived, and almost always won. Against the odds, both on the battlefield and in the gambling dens. CPL 'Hard' would begin to rely on the two heavily, becoming reluctant to risk their lives unless the odds were truly dire. Smiles would remain the most reliable of Nissar's friends for the rest of his days. On any battlefield where the Black Company marched the shape of the hulking Wildborn and diminutive glowing man were a familiar sight, fighting back to back time and time again.

Knight-of-the-Line 'Mask'

Mask would not have his revenge against the Necromancer, not this century at least. He did find some measure of peace though, becoming a constant shadow and guardian of the Black Prince and his curious foreign instrument. The Black Prince's pastime with the Erhu would be the only time either of them were at ease. The two were rarely seen apart, a virtually immortal revenant and the monstrosity Prince had become. Both once men and now something else entirely, old age and disease held no sway over them. The two would remain in the service of the Black Company long, -long- after all their other comrades during the Deadman's Campaign were reduced to shadows and dust by the inexorable march of time.

Lance-Corporal 'Murder' Meriam, 3rd Squad

There were far too few Chevalisse to kill in Rakasha for Murder's liking, almost none in fact apart from those off-limits new Black Company members. She even started dating one, though she never did reveal why she hated the Chevalisse with such a passion. Focusing on the more mundane matters of her job, Murder would become an effective NCO and one day make Sergeant. She continued to carry around her curious Albani music contraption, eventually breaking off from Saint's band with a dedicated muse following.
>>
Knight-Taskmaster Cairsun the Morning Light

Over time his role as bodyguard became secondary to his duties as head of the Black Company Blackguard Caste. It was just as well, the Black Prince hardly needed protecting even without Mask around. Old grudges and enemies previously unknown to the Company emerged in far-off Rakasha, though the man had made enemies everywhere in his past life. The Black Prince and the Captain had planned for that. Whether Cairsun eventually found his redemption for his failures as hero is unknown, though the Annalist seems to think it unlikely. The man greeted death as an old friend, it was one of the few times he was seen to smile.

Inseparable from his twin, the only way one could tell them apart was that Oliver had a distinct limp in his leg from the battle against the Grenn. Trooper 'Brittle' could be considered unlucky for many reasons. His penchant for getting unintentionally dragged into the Hasselhof twins' schemes; the frequency of him getting wounded in battle; his mild allergy to several kinds of nuts (which he loves). All too often the man would be in the wrong place at the wrong time, his cheerful naivete and straightforward nature making him a natural victim for either fate or plots. He was one of the few no more intimidated by the Black Prince than any other officer, oblivious to his true nature. As always the line between ignorance and courage is thin. The 7th Kriegstrom would eventually adopt him as a lucky charm of sorts, having come to assume that he was soaking up all their bad luck.

Joining the 4th Infantry, Pat Kergin would make Lance-Corporal before the Company even marched out of town. Most of his squad would be formed from other ex-Kresden Town Guard or surviving Free Alliance members. He adapted to the Company easier than most, there was nothing left for him in Kresden. Saint was ecstatic to have Jenny survive her disaster in some form. She would often call upon the commander of the 7th Kreigstrom as an excuse to check in on and chat with the Sarsburg orphan. From a more practical point of view, Black Prince and the Captain were also pleased. The utility of the possessed Legio eagle could not be understated. As a scout, distraction or spy Legless Jenny would be second to none. And the weighty swoop of the metal creature from the skies would prove as deadly as any crossbow bolt. It would take some time before the girl realised that the souls of the dying were what sustained her. Until then, in the presence of the Black Prince, she never went hungry.

Page #137

The daemon-possessed child would often comment that the Black Prince was much less fun to play with than his old toy Corporal Prince. The annalist suspects that in time even he grew scared of that creature. When his wards broke briefly in a later campaign none can say for certain whether he refrained from slaughter his companions out of affection or fear. Interestingly he found in Jenny an unusual companion, the two were often seen in each others presence when the camp was idle. Corporal Prince would have been profoundly disturbed by their developing relationship, the Black Prince didn't care.

Page #137 once confided in the Black Prince that his fellow daemon-child also held a torch for Jenny. Neither can explain why, perhaps its the gold. Or the wings. The Black Prince never asked why, in part because he does not care and in part because conversations with #88 invariably involve dangerous magik being cast.

Quartermaster Qar-Tel

Supply is a cushy job, Qar-Tel was happy to continue his backseat role in the company and hand out contracts to enterprising CPL's on The Post. They say you can buy anything in the Rakasha Raj if the price is right and the Supply Quartermaster was a most excellent procurer and haggler for the Company. He was also wise enough to usually give the 7th Kriegstrom a hefty discount.

Specialist Jale

Jale would continue his experiments during his time in the Company. He often took to observing Asgorga, Jenny, Mask, the Vampires and Black Prince with a curiosity skipping past the level of scholarly and well into the realms of annoying. Sometimes his experiments were the only thing Saint and Kiranova could agree on, Saint calling for a ban because of the ethical dubiousness and Kiranova banning them because of the physical danger they presented to the Company.

Corporal Lorgia, 4th Squad

Lorgia and his crack-team of Bloodknights would become one of the most ferocious and feared elements of the 7th Kriegstrom. Although Saint never got over her distaste for the creature, even she was heard to admit that the night-time specialists were 'almost' worth the hassle of guarding their caskets and the trouble the inevitably caused with the local populace. In time, the Captain would have to take steps to curb the rate of recruitment into their own exclusive quasi-Blackguard ranks.
Lord Lorgia has a flair for the dramatic, some of the concert crowd as he bursts onto the stage. He and his Bloodknight Band make extensive use of coreographed skeletons and thralls in his performance.

The upside of /qst/'s slow traffic is that I think it's fairly safe to say I'll have time to let the final few epilogues wait until the weekend.

I am of course happy to answer any questions or just chat in the meantime.

>If I were to write one final scene, who would be there and what would take place?

I will try to combine suggestions but no promises.

Almost forgot this cunt.

Sergeant Ludos Clayton

The ex-Captain of the failing Yellow Dog mercenary company was proud to be part of the meanest, leanest sons of bitch outfit to ever plague the world. He would often challenge Master Sergeant Bad Hand's authority for NCO leadership of the 7th, though rarely in front of their subordinates. Your brother would always laugh quite loudly in his face and occasionally follow up said laughter with a fist or two. Despite the trouble he caused, the man was an extremely proficient leader and . His peers would question his methods, but rarely the results.
>>
> Clayton was actually a good leader
Color me feeking impressed.

You know Forgotten, you haven't told us what's the ending *you* would have preferred. I'm curious to know that.

I know this will sound stupid, but I'd love to see a scene in the far future where the Company is hired against the Necromancer and he's killed by Prince and Mask.
