In the first years of invasion, the planet's magnetic field and atmosphere were severely disrupted by the elemental chaos of strange energies and spacetime alterations unleashed from experimental weapons and alien technology. The damaged fabric of reality gave rise to a phenomenon known as the Aurora Cascade. With barely enough warning to take shelter, the sky lights up in waves of shifting colors like the northern lights of old, while severe electrical, gravitational, and dimensional disturbances distort physical laws . At best they cause vivid hallucinations in conscious beings, organic or mechanical. At worst, people have been known to disappear into other universes, or slingshot forward millions of years in time. And there's always the chance of simply being struck by an aurora-charged lightning bolt and killed instantly.

When the Cascade strikes, all living things bunker down in whatever shelter is available until it blows over, however long that is. The storms can last for hours, days, or even weeks. All the while, humans and aliens alike are trapped indoors behind radiation shields, or deep underground.

This particular aurora descends with shimmering waves of brilliant emerald, forcing the Freelancer assault team indoors, into their outpost converted from an old comms tower. Hopes of a quick blowout amount to nothing, as the physics storms last for days, exotic energies clashing just outside the shield doors.

The Freelancers spend their time of forced inaction in various ways. They grumble about the lack of combat, compare kill counts, write letters, divert themselves with whatever entertainment programs they have loaded in their suits' memories. There are drinking contests, games of skill and chance, and the occasional fistfight or brawl. The media files from Ancient Earth retrieved in a previous mission are now greatly appreciated. The team watches a series of films about a man who finds himself in increasingly unlikely and violent situations. In each movie the man must protect a friend or family member while also saving the day by fighting off terrorists or criminals. "Makes you miss the old days back on Earth," one watcher is overheard to say. "When we just fought each other."

Most of all, the Freelancers pretend not to be afraid. Last mission there were casualties. Nobody wants to talk about their thoughts of whose number might be up next. As usual, bravado is the order of the day.

During the downtime, the two NCOs, section commander Graves and recon specialist Snow, are sometimes seen together at meals or biding time in isolated corners, engaged in private discussion. A Freelancer who happened to pass by, or linger near before being chased away by a stern glare from Snow, might overhear parts of a conversation that went like this:

"I've been down about fifty levels," Snow says. "Past the Warrens and the Greenway. There are structures down there. Mages say they might be temples."

"Temples to what?" Graves asks.

"The Mages don't know," Snow says. "Or if they do, they're not saying. Who knows with those guys? Try and talk with them, you're as likely to get an earful of physics equations or xeno language." She looks out the window, her face lit up in shifting hues from the auroras outside. "What about you? Ever been down in the tunnels?"

"Once," Graves says. "When I was with the Knights."

"The metalheads went down there? That's enemy territory. Usually us Hunters are the only ones with the brass to do something that. Along with and any Mage crazy enough to want to study worm tech up close."

"Some major from the Order of Blazing Sun had the bright idea to set up a beachhead down there," Graves says. "His plan was to drive straight down until we found a suitable cave, fortify it, hold it as a redoubt and staging ground to launch further assaults. He assembled a good size warband of Knights. I was just a kid back then, barely more than a squire. I'd never fought the worms before. Had no idea what I was in for."

"How did it go?" Snow asks.

"About as well as it usually goes when we try anything other than hit and run."

"That bad, huh?"

"Infestation outbreak," Graves stares off into nothing, reliving those dark hours underground. "Lost my entire unit to the worms. I saw some of them turn into -- you know. Those things."

"You made it out, though."

"Captain got me out," he says. "I wouldn't have made it otherwise. After we got topside again, she told me she was leaving the Knights to start a Freelancer company, and, well, here I am. But I still think about them sometimes. My old squad, that is. The ones I left down there in the dark."

Snow rests her hand lightly on Graves' broad shoulder. They spend a quiet moment with their memories.

Gingerly, Gallows picks up the rifle lain across her dead sister's grave. The arcing lines where the lightning had leapt to it. It still worked. Placing the rifle onto her back, next to her new shotgun, she picked herself up, heading to roll call.

With a test flick, the energy sword appeared in her hand, the red energy spilling out onto the metal walls of her surroundings. One swing and the sword disappeared.

As she approached her deranged mage ally Thoth (Not that she's much different), she chuckled under her helmet. "I thought you would have taken, Bonnie was it?"

When the Cascade finally lifts, the assault team springs into action. Most of the Freelancers are eager to relieve their cabin fever with a proper dust-up, or at least to get outside. Communication and resupply quickly resumes with Echo Base, and the supply skiff zips over to deliver ammunition, power cells, and a few copies of the Alchemist's latest creations. Graves speaks with The Captain and confirms that the assault plan stands -- in fact the Mage Council is now urging her to even greater haste, as during the Aurora the Scavs may have been making progress towards the valuable secrets contained with the machine city's citadel.

"Everybody load up!" Graves shouts as he moves among the troops who are hastily checking and re-checking their gear. He surveys the preparations with an expert eye, tightening loose straps, looking over weapons prep, and giving a quick pep talk to anyone shaking in their boots. "I want us in the air in five minutes!" he calls out. "Let's go, lancers, we've got aliens to kill!"

The planned mission has the objective of retrieving a certain security code from a Scav database. When the time comes to make the assault on the primary Scav force encamped in the citadel, this code should be able to disrupt and delay the aliens' systems long enough for the strike team to get a significant advantage.

The dropship swoops through the rainy skies towards a tall tower, one of many power spires in the Machine City. The small craft weaves through, and is occasionally struck by, lightning bolts discharged from the vast generator coils, but its shielding manages to keep it intact. The Freelancers, strapped into their seats on either side of the cargo hold, hang on tight and hope they at least make it to the drop zone in one piece. Thoth takes out the weapon bequeathed to the team by the departed Westree, a revolver named after the fallen gunman's dear mother Bonnie. The mage has a long look at the memento of his friend.

Graves walks up and down the lines of waiting warriors. "Snow's recon photos have showed us the layout of the power spire, and the Priests have identified three points as weak spots in the Scavs' cyber-defense. We'll need to jack into all three to complete the mission. While we're at it, we'll make sure to kill every goddamn Scav in the place. We don't know how they'll be dispersed, but that doesn't matter! Hunt 'em down, hit 'em fast, hit 'em hard! Two minutes to green light!" He stops by the computer interface to sort through the media files from Ancient Earth retrieved in a previous mission, and scrolls through the music selection. A grin crosses his face under his helmet as he spots a certain song. "Yeah, this'll do."

The archaic rock music from humanity's distant past blasts through the dropship loudspeakers, the air filling with the thud of drums and squeal of guitars, as the craft descends over the Scav encampment. Retrorockets fire as the dropship brakes hard over the landing zone on the western end of the power station.

The hatch opens, and the Freelancers pile out, descending on sturdy cables that unravel all the way to the ground, and land with their weapons at the ready. The Scavs have been caught off-guard by the attack, the Thralls milling about in fear as the Raiders try to give orders. Before they can organize their defenses, the Freelancers take the initiative and strike!

Thoth looks up from testing the opening speed of his dimension pocket to meet gazes with Rhino, and returned his nod. There would be vengeance this day. Or night. It was oddly hard to tell. The Aurora had melded everything into one, and some lingering aftereffects had been messing with his chronal calculations. He opened his dimension pocket once more to withdraw Bonnie, Westree's last gift. He'd hated to alter it, but he'd done his best to install a magnetiser tuned to Rhino's IFF signal. If he fell, the weapon should go straight to who Thoth felt should have received it in the first place.

The Scavs immediately grab their weapons -- their savage culture seems to dictate that everyone must be ready for combat at any time -- and counterattack. Their firing patterns are disorganized as the Raiders struggle to establish control over their Thralls and determine the enemy plan of assault. Several humans are scratched or wounded by return fire or grenade bombardment from the aliens, but none severely. The Scavs take up defensive positions as a wave of reinforcements arrives from the rooms further east.

Electricity crackles and surges from the power coils and pylons, and the air hums with static charge, as the half-functioning power spire continues its work. Rain pours down from the roiling black clouds overhead through erosion holes in the roof, coating the combatants' armor in a glistening sheen, raindrops sizzling as they strike the power coils or intersect mid-air laser beams.

One of the thralls twitched, and Thoth blew it away. Which didn't stop the grenade coming back at them, or the followup shots that came so close to taking him out right here and now. Even his spirit reprojections didn't soak any of that.

As he primed it, he rapidly spat out a series of letters, numbers, and what seemed to be attempts at vocalising lines. Any mage worth their salt in the area would recognise it as a trajectory. The trajectory he was about to send the grenade along.

Because really, what were the chances that the scavs had a math genius among them?

Solaaris' Aegis shield softened the impact of the happy-looking Thrall's grenade but even so, the Hawks took a serious pummeling.

It quickly somersaulted behind some cover that wasn't destroyed in the explosion and deployed a medkit.
Thoth took the brunt of that grenade and was quite badly hurt, he needed help.

Solaaris fired some suppresive shots at the grenade lobbing Thrall from behind cover and noticed a member from another team come to aid in the capture of the control room.

The forest was a death trap as much as she had expected. The deployable cover was had helped provide a marker for a frontline, but it was either going to crumble from grenades or heavy gunfire. As the announcement of Witches buzzed in her helmet, she heaved a sigh. "Alright sis, time to get some revenge for you on those lightning whores."

As she runs, the phase generator activates, casting her form in a bright red haze. Any gunfire aimed at her would miss or pass through. "All in the forest spread out and reposition. 2 witches head down middle, unless you want to get zapped."

Phaws calls forth his second time-echo, resummoning the same orbital strike from the past, or perhaps somewhere else entirely. Echo technology is barely comprehensible even by its inventors, but its effects are no less potent for it. The Mage cackles as the fiery energy blast obliterates yet more Thralls.

The other Freelancers continue the pressure, but many of their shots go wide or are blocked by cover. Many of them tense in anticipation of the Witches' assault, having witnessed the fulminous potency of their spellcasting before.

Sigurd absorbs the shots from Scav reaction fire as he lumbers towards the Scav terminal marked as an objective. The Knight reaches into a hatch in his gauntleted forearm to pull out a cord and jacks himself in. The auto-hacking program does the rest, and the objective lights up green on the Freelancers' HUDs. "One down, two to go," Graves says. "Keep things rolling, boys and bots! Get those other two terminals lit up before reinforcements show up. We'll be literally drowning in Scavs if we hang around too long."

Sigurd, out in the open now, takes several shots from Scav energy guns, but his mighty shield and powerful armor protect him completely and he takes literally no damage. However, one of the Witches swoops into range and casts the ritual to imprison the Knight within a force cage, binding him with restraints of electromagnetic energy so powerful even Sigurd cannot break free. "Son of a bitch," Graves growls. "One of you guys get a shot on that witch, get Sigurd out of there!"

Leopard crouches behind a pillar that once supported the now-crumbled roof as the southern Scav team pours their firepower onto him, including Raider 8 who teleports across the broken bridges over the chasm below to close the gap. Most of the alien shots strike Leopard's cover, blasting debris in all directions. One Raider fires true, but the Hunter is able to deflect some of the beams away from himself, and in the end the Scav assault is weathered with minor damage.

Rook the Hunter suffers a combination attack of Thrall grenade, Raider energy rifle, and a chain lightning strike from a Witch's malefic powers. The Hunter falls to one knee, charred and blackened, his armor still twitching and crackling with electricity as the energy courses through its systems. But he still survives, and he still fights on.

The reinforcements from the western rooms seem to have stopped -- for now. Perhaps that's all the Scavs have to fight with here. Perhaps this group of four Witches was all they had left. Perhaps the reports of a Thane Caster being present were mistaken.

Or maybe he's just waiting for the right moment to strike.

The forest was scavenger central. Gunfire and lightning was arcing back and forth across the battle field. Quickly clicking in a new magazine, Gallows quickly scanned the minimal HUD. Raiders were piling those cover pieces, and hailing on both the newbie and Sigurd. As she grasped the mana battery she was going to overload into a grenade, she was of half mind to shatter the cover, but with threat of reinforcements and a possible Thane, she counted out her trajectory further back, blasting the cover of the raiders but leaving enough for possible Freelancer use.

"Wolf squad, someone get the witch holding Sigurd and focus fire. Raider in cover gonna get a present. Once the witch is down, refocus on my targets."

Stepping up onto the cover piece in front of her, she loosed her grenade. "Fire in the hole lizard brains!"

Solaaris dived into cover and peered around the side of the pillar it was hiding behind.
A Witch was hovering closer and closer. Solaaris knew that if something wasn't done about this problem soon, the Hawks would feel the pain of lightning striking them much like the other two teams had already experienced.

Solaaris was glad it was able to reduce the impact on Leopard and it could now focus on bringing this Witch down into the the pit below.

"Hee-ha! Witch down!" Thoth cheered, pumping his rifle in the air as he ran, sliding through to move up while most of the scav attention was on Leopard, that brave, stupid bastard.

Cute, the raider could teleport. Wait, raiders could teleport? Did he miss something? He shrugged, bringing his rifle up to his shoulder in the same motion.

It didn't matter, he could still blow them away. Or more accurately, he could harness and abuse the interactions of a temporary Light Cage, gravitinos, the New Theory of Ionic Combustion, to spark tiny, unstable Żuraw Moments which opened tiny portals to the void in between dimensions that pulled in whatever it could before collapsing. Pretty much nothing compared to the actual bullet that went with it, and the mean actualisation time of a Żuraw Moment meant that it didn't take effect in time to let the initial bullet benefit, but any followup shots would have a rapidly disappearing suit of armour to contend with, made soft enough by the process that it provided no effective resistance even while still visibly present.

...This is why it was easier to wave his hand and say 'It's magic.' It kind of was. Sufficiently advanced technology and all.

Of course, all that would mean nothing if this next shot missed. Well, it'd mean a bit of really screwed Scav base, but that wasn't the mission here.

The wounded Arbiter, his armor blackened by lightning, still has enough strength to sermonize the will of the satellites as he heals himself and his Hunter squadmate.

Solaaris gets what he thinks is a good lead on Witch 4, hovering above the chasm to the lower levels far beyond, and fires his assault rifle. But the creature twists and turns in midair, evading the attack. "Tricky bitch," someone grunts. Flicker and Leopard are on target against her, but Smokes misses as well, and the witch survives the assault. Raider 8 nearby likewise barely withstands.

While Phaws and Gallows each hurl grenades, detonating with bright green energy blasts, Reinhardt uses the last of his security protocols to overload a Thrall's systems, using the alien's own tech against it. His HUD flashes with errors, warning the enemy computers have adapted to this particular algorithm.

Witch 2 swoops down and, gesturing with her staff, generates a repulsion field that yanks Gallows off her feet and into the electric coils nearby. The Mage's Crash Shield activates automatically upon collision, protecting her from some of the damage. Seeing a target out of position, Raider 13 fires immediately, but only strikes a mirror image. His two nearby compatriots fire on Latobius, their rifles each barely able to penetrate the Knight's armor. Witch 3 continues her hold on Sigurd, chanting as her staff maintains the electromagnetic seals around Sigurd's limbs.

Witch 4 closes the gap and unleash a blast of chain lightning through Solaaris into Leopard. Raider 8 dashes into melee, but Solaaris is able to evade his blade strikes. Leopard's cover finally collapses into rubble from Thrall 23's attack, and Raider 14 exploits this, but with the Hunter's blade deflection skill and Solaaris's Aegis power, he remains unharmed.

A giant armored figure strides into view atop the Forge. The vanguard Freelancers relay their observational data.

The Thane has arrived.

She holds no weapons at first, keeping her arms folded as she gazes down at the battlefield. Ragged banners bearing the sigil of her warband hang from the forge roof above her, flying in the wind and rain.

"There she is," Graves says. "Volzar's supposedly a former Witch who somehow claimed a Thane's rank. We don't know just what she's capable of, so watch yourselves out there. Oh, shit, here it comes--"

Thane Volzar raises one hand and begins to speak in her language. There seems to be a strange cadence and rhythm to what she's aying. Your helmets' auto-translator struggles to parse some of the stranger words and eventually begins to dump a rough translation into your text feed:

The Thane reaches out her hands to either side as small automated drones approach, bearing her weapons. A long-hafted halberd, blade engraved with blue runes, is taken by her left hand. A massive cannon, its internals glowing with violet light, attaches to her hip with a cybernetic support arm and is held by her right hand.

Regardless of that... horrible noise that reminded him uncomfortably of a certain Mage from his past's awkward attempts at serenade, Thoth had some unfinished business. The wildly-swinging Raider. Sol dodged him so far, but "so far" was never safe. Besides, he needed to clear the way for Hawk to move up. A quick look through dear Gallows' HUD revealed that Wolf was... having things done to them that would not be polite to describe. On the other hand, damn Witches, and thrice damn their fuckery. Only mages were allowed to tamper recklessly with the laws of the universe! Nobody else!

"Cliche mage-on-mage incoming!" Thoth hollered, snapping off a shot as he moved forward. This one didn't need the fancy armour stripper. Nobody here wanted to see a Witch in the nude.

Getting flung by hyperscience at a lightning cool is not fun in any perspective. Energy levels spike, and the usual Freelancer armour suits begins triggering it's life support system, resulting in unintended defibrillation. Normally, this would be resolved by rest or alcohol, but neither was on hand and the Thane was here.

She was lucky that the short after images that followed her were doing their work, one absorbing a shot that would have most likely ended her, or dropped her to her last legs.

"Squad we need to turn the tides. Start pushing forward. Witch 3 needs to go soon, because we need more hands for the Thane. And can I get some healing or something."

With a loud rack of her shotgun, Gallows turns and fires on a raider.

Latobius fires what he's sure is a perfect headshot, and it would be -- but the witch he's targeting has dropped behind the deployable wall. The sniper shot strikes the wall instead, shattering the metal weakened from multiple Scav grenades. The Knight smashes a gauntleted fist into the nearby wall in frustration.

(Can't attack through heavy cover. Phaws is able to shoot over, due to the Thane being elevated. Any other instances are player/QM targeting errors.)

Solaaris practically disintegrates the wounded Raider 8 with autofire from The Hard Way. The Priest laughs with vindictive glee as he blasts apart the alien, splattering himself with cyan blood.

"I always forget," the Thane says in disgust, "How eager you apes are to imitate your betters." She winces as several sniper bolts slam into her barrier fields until finally they shatter, exposing her to attack. "Your bullets sting only slightly more than your attempts at defiling the noble art. Very well. You have shown me your guns. I shall show you mine." She levels the massive cannon, and it warms up, shining a violet light, until the light explodes outwards in a gigantic energy blast that instantly vaporizes the machinery that shielded Arbiter and Smokes, striking the two Freelancers with a torrent of void energy that tears apart their outer plating and leaves them staggered and wounded.

Witch 3, apparently bored of her play with Sigurd, ends her force cage spell only to repel the Knight backwards into the electrical coil behind him, sending the power surging through his armor and cooking the flesh underneath. Nearby her Witch sister and Raider comrades unleash their firepower on Gallows, blasting apart the section of wall the Mage took refuge behind, stripping her mirror image defenses away, and leaving her bloodied and near death.

"We've got Scav reinforcements on the scope," Graves says. "They'll be on top of you soon. Hit those objectives, Freelancers! Don't let this big-boned bitch scare you off, you need to get the fuck in there! Move, move, move!"

A Freelancer with the command frequency hacked might hear Graves switch over and say, "Captain, seriously--"

"Not yet, Graves," the Captain replies.

"But sir, they're getting fucked up out there! No-one's down yet, but it's only a matter of time at this rate. I can't just sit here--"

"Do you understand what a reserve is, Commander? The purpose it serves in battle? Shall I ask you to recite to me Lord Alder's Thirteen Precepts of War, to see if you fully understand their strategic merit?"

A sigh. "No, Captain. I'll wait."

"Good. We might need you soon."

"You mean--?"

"I've got a bad feeling about this one, Graves."

"You mean a twelve-foot-tall alien shooting a giant void cannon at us isn't enough of a problem, Captain?"

"Just be ready."

"Gallows! Fuck, not you too." Thoth bit down on anything else he might've said. Emotions controlled, don't flip out here. He peered around the pillar to check out the opposite side of the bridges, finding only one raider in his way. Meanwhile, his helmet's not-particularly-standard-issue modified comm key slipped back into the command frequency to play him the later conversation. It kind of hurt to hear how much Graves cared. And it nearly did hurt to hear the Captain's doomsaying. Doomsaying which he kind of bought into. He felt kind of itchy, like he'd accidentally shut a few dozen bugs in his suit. That... couldn't be good.

"Agh, hell with this." Thoth slapped his rifle back into what he liked to call 'Physics Fucking Mode' and trotted out of cover, taking as careful aim at the raider as he could given his steady combat pace. "Alright ladies, gents, robots, and Flickers, it's time for us to actually pull some weight here."

"Squeeze the trigger, don't pull it," Thoth said, his voice a few octaves lower than normal, and much flatter, like he'd stolen somebody else's voice. "Squeeeeeeeze."

Struck by the full might of the void cannon's space-tearing assault, Arbiter feels the black touch of the void. But the virtual realm intervenes, a guardian subroutine diverting some of the attack's power to the Priest's own energy systems. Arbiter looks down at his hands, seeing a purple glow, and feels a strange power suffuse him. [For this mission gain Voidtouched (S, C2): Your next attack this turn gains +1 break, and if it hits, heal yourself for 3 HP.]

Leopard blinks forward, reaching between dimensions to strike the Raider as he passes through. The Scav lying dead behind him, the Hunter immediately plugs in to the objective terminal and activates the autohacker program. The objective marker pings and turns green on his HUD. "Two down, one to go," Graves says. "Vacia, head into that objective room. With any luck, that Thane should be distracted enough for you to get away with it." He checks his feed of the helmet cams to see Vacia engaged in a vicious melee with with a Raider in the cramped confines of the Office. "Quit playing around with that lizard and get to it!"

The other Freelancers do their best to clear out their respective combat zones, but a series of missed shots and uncoordinated fire leaves both remaining Witches alive and the back row of Raiders in the center almost untouched, while the front line of the Freelancers' center is battered and wounded. "Oh, shit --" Graves realizes the tactical situation. "Wolf team, brace yourselves--!"

Witch 3 conjures a force impulse and pushes Sigurd into the pit! The Knight falls to the lower levels of the power spire, hundreds of feet below. His Phoenix power may resurrect him when he lands at the bottom and dies, but even then, he will have no way of rejoining the battle in time.

Without Sigurd, Gallows is left alone on the front lines. Under a relentless barrage of fire from the Scav raiders, the Mage goes down to one knee, her armor cracking and blackening from the electrical discharges. Severely wounded, she feels a reverberation in the metal under her feet, and looks up to see the Thane has descended to the main battle floor. The gigantic Scav levels her void cannon. "[Back to the mud with you!]" Volzar booms, and her weapon unloads bright violet gouts of void energy. Gallows is torn to pieces.

>The Last Word of Gallows, Throw fire grenade at 6 north east, 9 east of death site.

In a smoking, hazy form, the glowing red form of Gallows rises. Wrapped around her neck is the a purple, black cord slowly tightening.

She turns, almost straining to keep her form. The fire grenade that had been strapped to her leg, a leg that now hung loosely on the edge of the pit. A pained look tears at her face as she reached down clasping it in her hands that flickered.

In between attempts to loosen the noose, she pulls the pin, taking one final look at her friends and team. "Thoth, you've lost two now. Just hold on buddy. Dawn thanks for trying to save me. I'm sorry I didn't make it."

As the noose starts to restrict speech, she calls out to Volzar. "The Creator let me go to do one last thing. You may have killed me, but when they kill you, I hope you enjoy seeing me again."

With one final toss effort, she tossed the grenade. With a pained look, she looks back at Thoth, the friend who had lost so much. Her form lifts, the noose pulled up and disappearing. "Goodbye everyone. I'll tell Delphi and Westree that you said high as well." Flashes in the HUD of everyone for a brief second before a bright flash and she's gone.

Like she needed her incessant HUD's alerts she saw. Lancers are going down left and right and red flashes are burning on nonstop. Gritting her teeth she runs away from her comfy cover and sprays her SMG at the witch who so casually threw Sigurd away.

The Thane's cannon was an incredibly powerful weapon. Gallows was gone and the rest of the Wolves would soon follow if nothing short of a miracle happened.

Oh, his poor allies were dropping like flies. It was sad that they could not live to exterminate more scavs, but at least they could embrace the divine ones in their slumber, even the heretic blown to bits. He would check up on them later, see how they were enjoying the afterlife. He might not see that mage there, hmm. He might have to pull a few favors with the satellites, he had been a good boy recently and they might be willing to listen.

Hmm, the better part of valor was flanking the enemy and shooting them from cover, so they said. Oh, the witch had thought she was clever incorporating her witchcraft with xeno firepower, but by the light he had conquered her craft! Yes, by the heretics own hand they would be undone, one plasma burst at a time.

How he did wish more advancements had been made in incendiary weaponry, as there was no way to make this outing a proper cleansing.

The punishment for witchcraft was death by *fire*, after all.

The wounded Witches are finished off, going down with howling screams and booming thunder. The flanks are secured. With the Thane going right down the center, Vacia takes the opportunity to race into the Forge. She moves past the reserves of matter blocks and molecular manipulators, to find the third terminal. Plugging in her cable, the autohacker program swiftly does its work. Everyone's HUD pings a small green light and diplays a short text readout to indicate objective completion.

"Aaaand got it!" says Graves. "Captain, we've retrived the data. Scav systems will be ours for the hacking once we assault the citadel."

"Good work, Graves. Keep them going. Finish off that Thane."

"You got it, boss."

"Nice work, Freelancers," Graves says over the group channel. "I'm sorry about Gallows, but -- this sort of thing happens. War's a bitch. Hurry and finish off those scale-faced freaks. Once we're on our way, we'll see if we can't bring the dropship around down to the lower levels. Sigurd's got the Phoenix protocol active, we might be able to retrieve him down there. Everyone get to work!"

"[I see there is one among you who stands with honor,]" Thane Volzar says, levelling her runed halberd at Latobius. The floor shakes with every step as she moves inexorably towards him. "[Shall we duel, little Knight?]" With a huge sweep the halberd scythes through terrain and metal plating alike, crushing the protective layers of titanium-70 armor. The Thane follows with a mighty kick that sends the Knight flying through the air. He is only spared the same fate as Sigurd by the railing behind him that crumples under his weight but barely keeps him from falling off the ledge and down into the pits below. As it is, he only survives the assault from the Thane and two Raiders due to his overclocked biology from Dawn's biotic specialization. "[Still alive? I admit I'm impressed!]" Volzar swings her halberd with a dramatic flourish, leaving a spattering of Latobius's blood on the ground. "[I will remember you when you're dead, little Knight!]"

The Thane stands dominant over Latobius, but the rest of the team is ready to come to his aid -- until --

"Graves!" A small, high voice breaks urgently across the strike team comm channel. It's the Alchemist, transmitting from back at Echo Base. "I'm reading some serious seismic activity! I-i-it's right under you!"

"How serious?" asks Graves.

"Really serious! Th-this is -- oh, satellites -- you've got chthonic assault incoming, team! Worms have surfaced and are on their way up to your level right now!"

"Where are they?" Graves demands.

"Everywhere!" the Alchemist shrieks in panic.

The southern members of Hawk Team look into the yawning gap below the bridges. Down in the darkness, illuminated in fits and starts by sparking electric discharges, they see a writhing, putrid organic mass climbing the walls at a rapid pace.

The Captain's voice cuts in. "Get them out of there, Graves. Now!"

"Everyone to the evac zone!" Graves bellows as everyone's HUD lights up in blaring yellow warning signs. "Right fucking now! Go go go!"

Dashing 11 West, 1 Northwest

The itch from before came on, only so much worse. There were thousands of them. Tens of thousands. Millions. He was choking, drowning, clawing at his throat to tear it out and deny them entry into him. His legs buckled, his knees chewed to bone and slick sinew. He rolled unconsciously, his gun firing out into the horde even as his body exploded in pain, every nerve ending firing at once. Staring down, eyes blind to the real and open to the world, he saw himself swallowed by a frothing, raging, putrescent mass, bellowing defiance all the way.

The Alchemist's voice brings him back to himself. He was not that shining, armoured figure, standing and falling against the swarm. He was Thoth, half-crazed, bereaved, future-telling physics-fucker. He lay face down, head peering over the edge of the bridge, and he had just connected his mind to Sigurd's for a brief moment. And he now knew a very important fact. He was but one. A pebble on the shore who had seen the rising tide of filth and slime and mulched bone.

He was afraid.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, a torch of rationality was lit. The face carrying it, a familiar feminine face wearing a familiar-but-different synth-felt hat, had one message for him: "Run."

Thoth ran.

Ducking into the evac zone Dawn was finally thankful for the bulky bundle of steel she kept in place of a jetpack. Plopping it down and hoisting up its high wall gave her some measure of comfort if not for the sickly green warning flare on her helmets HUD.

Just as Solaaris had calculated, the Thane came closer to its prey, which allowed Solaaris to lock on to her with The Hard Way.

Its purpose as a Priest was to help keep his team alive, but it had to preserve itself before thinking of others so that it could live to save lives another day.
This break in its algorithm was triggered as soon as it recieved the news of a problem infestation of space worms coming to end the lives of all creatures in the area, be they human or scav.

So with an electronic sigh and one last look at the Thane, Solaaris hauled The Hard Way over its shoulder and ran for said means of self preservation.

Just rolling to see if I would have been able to deal a shitton of damage to the Thane.

But if the Thane's armour is broken, they'll have to fall back 'least they become swarmed by the Worms. And as I've just done that, that's one problem out of our hair. You pinned Volzar while they were in range of our evacuation zone.

So far be it from me to shortshell your sacrifice, Stomper, but I ain't letting you die and kill me too just because Knights can't calculate a fire trajectory in their head!

But with the two of us together, we force them to flee. Or, well, I do. Because I'm kind of awesome like that. Now pry your spear outta their cloak and get over here.

I ain't letting you die in a splutter flash-in-the-pan of glory when there are so many more exciting places for a knight to get turned to gibs! If you want to showcase your moves, you can hold the Worms at bay from the evacuation zone!

The Freelancer team begins their fighting retreat towards the evac zone westward. Some few vow to stay behind and fight to the end, to give their comrades time to escape. Whether their actions be brave or foolhardy, their sacrifice will be remembered.

Crawling out of the depths are the worms in all their revolting splendor. The infestation form of the biological plague that has riven this world. The parasites. Muculent grubs almost the size of a man's arm, ravenous with insatiable hunger, driven by those most basic of biological urges: to consume, to spread, to grow. Climbing up the walls of the pit, breaking the floors, erupting into the midst of the battle, they squirm forward to the attack on tentacular appendages with horrific speed.

Knight Latobius aggressively attackes the Thane despite his wounds, clashing polearm to polearm, his spear against the runed halberd. As he battles, one of the worms slips past his guard, and he feels an agonizing pain as the creature sinks its fangs deep. With its rows of razor teeth, muscular tongue, and acidic saliva, the infestor form is a perfect machine for burrowing through the hardest of armors and into the vulnerable flesh beneath. Once access is secured, the creature sends needle-like trendils stabbing into its new host, hijacking nervous systems and supercharging cell reproduction as it replaces the hosts' genetic code with one of the worms' darker designs. The creatures have even adapted to assimilate robotics, leaving androids vulnerable as well. Latobius feels his body begin to swell and mutate under the alien influence, and he realizes he faces a terrible fate.

Volzar appears be in dire straits as well. The infestor parasites can propel themselves off the ground with surprising speed, and several have now latched onto the Thane's armor and are burrowing inward. "[Get off -- get off, damn the thunders!]" She shouts, a rising note of panic in her voice. "[I won't let this happen! Not to me!]"

Solaaris and Thoth are able to keep themselves untainted with their defensive abilities, blocking parasite leaps with aegis shields and evading them with mirror images. However, Flicker misses his overwatch shot against the small, elusive target as it slithers towards him. The worm leaps at the Hunter who soon feels the sickening sensation of the creature attaching itself to him and extruding its tendrils. His body weakning, he can already feel the alien horror clawing at his mind, and has only moments before it takes him.

[INFESTATION: On hit, parasites deal 1 piercing damage and attach themselves to hosts, dealing the same damage each round without further need for rolls. Using a "Stay Down" action or taking fire damage cleanses the Infested status by killing any attached worms. An adjacent ally may also use their action to do the same for you. If you die while Infested, your death effects are cancelled and you begin to change, soon to become something else.]

Anyway:
I'd like to get as many people home today as possible. This is a bit of a challenge, but it can be done.

Smokes just downed one of the Worms with an overwatched Scout Rifle. So they have 2HP and minimal defences.This means that simple overwatch fire or attacks from the majority of weapons will disable them. That's somewhat convenient, although no doubt stronger foes will arrive soon.

Here is what I suggest:

Vacia, in stealth, should dash to join us. You're mostly safe.

Anyone already in the evacuation zone, overwatch so the rest of us can get there.

The people who are going to be the slowest are Rhino, Thoth and Solaaris.

Solaaris, Thoth has flame grenade most of the worms around you and more will be held back by the flames. If move and attack those still alive, Thoth is a bit more in the clear. Next turn, you can both start dashing.

I know some of you are hurt and bleeding, but unless staying on the field will kill you, it will be better for us all if you try to clear out threatening Worms as you move. We get out of here alive.

Hey, uh, is this thing on? Beaming you all an overlay.

Worms have a thus-far demonstrated Mobility of 5, so the green zone marks the territory they threaten. Blue box is safety. Anyone with 6 Mobility that can enter here (most of you) is in the clear next turn. Plenty of time to clear worms once you're back on the dropship.

UNLESS arriving there leaves a number of worms equal to your health within 11 squares of you. These things ignore armor, so you'd better have covering fire or be really sure they'll miss. Solaaris is in particular danger of this, so I'll have to echo Phaws' advisory for a fighting retreat in the south. A well-placed fire grenade should help deal with further spawns as well.

Watch your buddies' backs, know what they're working with. We need this turn and two more to see Rhino home.

This precludes using a grenade then moving. That means he's going to get attacked three times. I don't know if Aegis blocks multiple attacks, or of Infection stacks.

With mobility 6, he's going to need dash fully for one round, then move again next after that. And the worms will be nibbing at his heels every step of the way.

It's not a lot, but it does mean two full turns of worms wriggling out of holes. Which means that if we all do evacuate, they might block off Thoth and Rhino.

I'm with you for not sticking around, but this is going to get real bad for those we leave behind if we do pull out.

Thoth's incendiary grenade blankets a zone in flames, and the worms set themselves ablaze as their blind hunger drives them into the fire. Rhino takes up an overwatch position on high ground while Wispe aggressively moves forward, chanting to herself as she hurls a mana grenade directly on top of the cracked metal, blasting several of the grubs as they emerge. Vacia, still in thermoptic camouflage, barely dodges the worms as they rush past.

The rest of the Freelancers make a fighting retreat to the evac zone, blasting any worms that stand in their path. The dropship hovers overhead, letting down cables for them to grab hold of. They may yet escape with their lives.

Thoth has the northeast covered by fire, but his eastern flank is exposed, and he has no mirror images left to protect him. Two of the worms leap onto him, latching themselves onto his armor and tunnelling through with rows of sharp teeth. Reinhardt, Phaws, and Wispe also suffer the sickening pain of the alien creatures taking hold.

The Scavs' lines are collapsing as well. The Raiders are holding back the waves of worms with coordinated overwatch fire, but the wave breaks higher every time, and soon they are struggling in melee with the parasites . Thane Volzar battles to break free of the massive wave of parasites flooding from the depths, throwing aside some as she cleaves through others with her halberd, but more yet rise to take their place. The spawnlings seem innumerable. When it finally seems she might gain a moment of respite, the hideously mutating Latobius reaches out to her, his arm erupting in a burst of tentacles that slither around the Thane's limbs and drag her down into the sea of worms with an echoing scream.

The Scavs are vicious killers, but at least they're understandable. They live, eat, fuck, and die, just like we do. They have dreams, ambitions, and fears, just as we do. They'll kill you for getting in their way, but they'll do it clean. Worms aren't anything so comprehensible. The vast and inscrutable minds that drive these creatures like cells in a gigantic body are intelligences far more eldritch and inscrutable. And what they do to people is something worse than killing.

The Freelancer strike team gathers in the evac zone, laying down fire to protect the comrades left out there. Corax sends a sniper bullet the way of the mutating and transforming Latobius. The shot rips through, but it isn't enough to stop the creature the Knight is becoming.

The last few stragglers make their way to the evac zone under cover of their team's barrage of overwatch fire. Bullets slam into the grubs and splattering the ground with chartreuse blood and black ichor. The exception is Rhino, who insists on staying behind to draw fire from the retreat. The cables reel in the evacuating Freelancers who collapse exhausted into their seats on the dropship. As the craft begins to rise and turn away, they watch out the open hatch as Rhino make his last stand, gunning down waves of parasites as they swarm towards him. The Scavs Raiders nearby defend themselves with equal valor, or whatever passes for it amongst their kind -- not allies, but at least enemies of your enemy.

"Graves?" the Alchemist says over comms. "Tell me you're getting out of there right now!"

"We're in the air," Graves says. He takes his helmet off. His face shows no emotion. But he's holding onto a bulkhead to balance himself, and one might notice he's actually crushing the metal in his armored hand.

"Those parasites weren't enough to cause these readings," the Alchemist is saying with trepidation. "There's something else out there -- oh no -- what is that?

A horrendous cry rends the air. The power spire shakes as something huge shakes it from the inside. Then a vast creature erupts from within, disintegrating half the spire in the chaos, parts of the structure splintering off and falling to the ground far below. A gigantic worm, like a supercharged version of the grubs, fifty feet long, its body covered in black armored plating, its massive fanged jaws dripping with acidic saliva. Growing smaller in the distance as the dropship flees, the figure of Rhino the Knight can be seen, still holding his weapon, standing his ground in front of the monster.

The dropship boosts away from the site of the battle, back to Foxhole Outpost, leaving the blood of the battlefield behind.

Leopard's optics sit fixated on the cumbling spire, its rifle still tracking targets far out of range.
"Rhino, Sugurd, may you find your Prey to be Worthy.

The Hunter turns, scanning across everyone aboard the dropship, then leans forward to address its squad. "Hawks, we all return to roost operational or alive. In this, have pride.
To the Fox, the Tiger, and the Wolves we leave behind, give your respect. Where they go, we shall one day follow. Because of them, that day is not today.
And for those around you, Pack and Kettle and Troop; honor. Alone we are nothing-Prey lost in the Dark. Together we are the Hunt, bringing death and defeat to that which lurks in the malevolent darkness."

The faint glow from its vest fades, the Charge finally giving out entirely. Concealed vents across its torso and head slide open to siphon heat build-up from internal components, its movements lose a degree of fluidity, even its voice shifts to something slower and smoother, as the android descends into a lower-energy mode.
"Should any of you four wish it, you may imbibe on my tab at tonight's wake."

Thanks for the run, this was one hell of a mission!

The dropship flies back to Foxhole outpost, rain drumming on the exterior. Behind them, back at the crumbling power spire, the battle rages on. The cyan discharge of Scav rifles can be seen, and the roar of the armored worm echoes through the air. One of the few good points about having multiple factions of alien invaders besieging your world is that they kill each other with as much enthusiasm as they kill you.

The team is quiet on their return. The absence of the fallen is keenly felt. Their seats are empty in the dropship. For every alien that dies, there are ten more to take their place, whereas humanity's numbers dwindle ever more as the decades of war drag on. But it's more than that. Each warrior that falls is not only the loss of a valuable war asset, but a friend.

The mission is nonetheless a success. By the time the team returns to Foxhole and receives their congratulations from the Captain, their usual jovial and irreverant spirits have begun to resurface. Soon they are in the repurposed supply room that serves as the outpost's social space, celebrating their victory, toasting the fallen, and getting rip-roaring wasted on the exotic chemicals that Freelancers require to get intoxicated. Supply and transport ships arrive from Echo Base, bringing fresh shipments of ammo and power cells, rotating weary troops off the front lines and replacing them with bright-eyed rookies ready to bust some Scav skulls.

Knight is the least popular at the moment. Not due to people not plating, but almost all of them died this mission.Priest is the second least amount of characters. Then Mages, then Hunters at the most popular.

She lost... too many friends today. She enlisted the same time as Gallows did and had met Rhino not long after. They were... well. Pretty much the closest people she was with and now... well. She didn't want to think about Rhino, she hoped he bit a bullet before he became one of those fucking.... things.

She finished the glass, stood up from her stool and began walking back to her room. She... had seen and... heard too much fucked up shit to just celebrate. It was time to go home, hug her daughter and cry herself to sleep.

Deep in the cold depths of space, Odin stirred. The satellite, looking down on the planet below, heard Rhino's call, and quickly rooted through its' storage, looking for his memory. His Soul only resided upon the plains of battle for a few microseconds after activation before Valhalla sent its' avatar, Huginn, to speak with the knight.

The interaction only lasted a few seconds before Rhino, as he was called by the Freelancers, accepted Odin's offer, and sped back towards the base he called home. Finding a home in one of the old, defunct military robots in the Freelancer warehouse, Rhino booted it up, using a system Odin called "Einherjar" to imprint himself upon the machine.

Caked in years worth of dust, Einherjar switched on a small indicator light, and spoke in a synthesized version of Rhino's human voice.

"It's really dark in here, huh?"

"Hello there, Solaaris. How are you feeling today?" said a voice, quite aggressively.

Solaaris adjusted its camera's focus, he was uncertain where the voice was coming from but it sounded familliar.
He tried to lift himself up but it was hard to tell which way that was.

"Oh don't worry, that's usually what happens to humans when they drink shot after shot after bottle after barrel of alcohol.
I'm surprised you didn't find out alcohol's other common property, considering you were throwing those flame grenades about like some sort of circus juggler."

"L-l-u..."

"Yeah, don't try to talk too much, I'm fixing the modules you damaged at the party. Honestly, you looked a lot better when you came back from fighting those worms."

Solaaris lay down in silence, trying to piece together what happened last night.
At least it was safe in the hands of its creator.
It looked at the ceiling and lights with great difficulty. The room was too bright and it hadn't had the time to reconfigure its camera's white balance.

A few more minutes of metallic clinking later, the human stood up and propped a pillow behind Solaaris' head.

"There, all fixed up. You should be as good as new.
In fact you might even be better now that I've added an extra special module to your frame." she gave Solaaris a wink and stuck out her tongue.

"Right, I have other things to deal with now. Al wants to show me this 'cool new thing' she found out about those little worms you and your friends brought back.
Rest well now. See ya later Sol!" and with that, she left Solaaris alone in the robotics lab.

Kneeling in his chambers that night, he had spent the later hours praying for those that had not made it out, whispering insistently to the old machines to take the memories of the souls of the lost, to give them a digital throne. In the stillness, he felt an echo in the code like a far off scream. Arising, he followed the echo he had felt to an old warehouse towards the back.

As he approached, he saw a light flicker on around the corner, and he heard a familiar voice call out as if to itself-

"It's really dark in here, huh?"

Arbiter rounded the corner, revealing an outdated military droid, fit with complex new coding- A Soul.

The priest smiled, genuinely this time. "It is only when we have lost our hopes that it is dark. This is why we carry our own light, so we may never lose it." With this he produced a code sphere, a miniature servant droid- mere blessings amongst true prayers- to cast a dim glow on the warehouse floor.

"Your new form suits you, wallbearer. I am glad that in my time as a priest i could at least save a single soul. Come-" He said, putting his hand on the bots shoulder- "I know a technician who owes me a favor, we'll get you more comfortable momentarily. And then... we'll have to hope your refittings hold against the tide of angry freelancers, you gave them quite the scare you know!"

His laugh echoed in the empty warehouse, as the two left the scrap empty and lifeless once again.

Looking at his hands through his new digital "eyes," Einherjar saw the priest, Arbiter, his name was, approach him, and smile. Following the man, the now-robotic Knight shook his head, confused.

"A refitting sounds nice, this body is acting pretty slow, but-" Einherjar looked himself over, recognizing the model and its capabilities, "Why am I in this rustbucket? How'd my body die?" The priest obviously could tell him, he was usually in Fox Squad, and was speaking as if he knew.

"I'm afraid the Satellites didn't grace me with the memories leading up to my demise."

Patting his shoulder back, with a little more force than intended, due to his new metal form, Einherjar looked about the hallways they passed through, trying to gauge the mood of the base. He was not pleased. "How devastating was the last mission to us?"

A grate abruptly clatters to the floor from the hallway ceiling in front of the two Freelancers, interrupting what the priest had to say next. Before either had a chance to respond, a certain helmeted head followed it, hood defying gravity to stay snugly over the helmet. Thoth moaned.

"Hearing people talk when I'm in a vent gives me headaches."

He flopped out of the vent, landing on his back. As he stared up at the unfamiliar robot above him the lights in his helmet's eyeholes whirled nauseatingly. "...Ow. It may also have been the alcohol, in hindsight. Retrospect? Nah, hindsight."

Thoth's gaze raised from the unfamiliar droid to the vent opening. His eyelights frowned. "How did I get in there?" he mumbled distractedly. "I thought I got shoved in a closet by... I think by me."

Then his gaze returned to the bulky droid and the priest. "More to the point—" Thoth kipped up suddenly, only to immediately fall on his face. His helmet delicately rolled to face back to the pair. "—did I hear my man Rhino's voice, or am I going even madder?"

The smile faded from the priest as the revelation of the price of the knights resurrection hit him in full. He was returned, yes, but not whole.

"Ah you see, we worked close this last mission. After a thane was engaged, however everything went wrong, and not in the usual way. Worms. This was the first time I'd ever seen the worms. Nasty parasites that serve no masters and crave only bodymass. We were being overrun by them, and three of the knights never made it out in the retreat. One thrown down the depths, one eaten alive, and one fought to the last. You were the one who stayed to the last. Do not worry yourself wallbearer, knights are meant to fight and die. It is you see, an expected tragedy. Now now, it is VERY disrespectful to call yourself a rustbucket, don't you know the amount of EFFORT it takes to copy a soul to raw data, encrypt it, process and transfer said data in a signal that can penetrate-"

"Ah yes, the prodigal one returns. Brilliance and jester in a neat little package. Do not bother to tolerate him wallbearer, he plays the fool because it is the only role he can. If only he could condense his spiels into something appraisable and appreciable then something perhaps could be deciphered from his entropic ramblings. You, Jester, you may be mad but you are correct in this one singular instance, for by the will of man and old one the skies have descended the SOUL of this man once more onto the mortal plane, and here he is. Unit Einherjar is the reconfigured SOUL of Rhino, and he is promptly being taken to the engineering to scrape a few pounds of this rust here off, yes, definitely some POLISH too... hmm. Yes, I do think that arm should be changed in full- ah the left quadrant internals need an exchange for top grade-"

And there the priest and the knight left for the engineering bay, one almost dragging the other mumbling and leaving the mage as he had found them, slightly confused and at a loss for words.

It was short lived, of course.
