You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

You awaken, this time within the confines of the Cathedral, and thankfully NOT in the infirmary this time, which was often the reason you usually ended up here.

Instead of the simple and spartan recovery ward, Solaire insisted that you and Morgan stay in one of the Cathedral's grander accommodations, apparently reserved for important visitors and heads of state.

Indeed, this room reminded you very much of Lucina's royal chambers. The floor and walls were built of flawless white marble decorated with gold inlays depicting the signs and likenesses of Sol. The bed itself was made of an extremely soft and smooth silk that you felt you had no right of even touching, much less sleeping in.

Overall, this room was far more opulent than your tastes, but, well, it would be rude to refuse Solaire's hospitality. Morgan felt the same way too.

Thankfully, being in the Cathedral, the stateroom had a rather large window facing east, so that Sol would fill the room with His morning light, which serves as an excellent stimulus to wake you up.

Meanwhile, you notice that Morgan is...

You noticed Morgan cuddled up to you like a puppy seeking warmth. You can't help but give her a light headpat before getting up to do your standard morning prayer, kneeling in front of the eastward facing window and silently reciting your dedication to Sol while under His light.

That's when you're interrupted by a knock at the door.

"Morgan? Templar? Are you two awake?" Valentia's familiar voice worms through the heavy wooden door.

Morgan mumbles something as she unconsciously rolls around in the bed.

You quickly don a robe and your helmet as you stride over to the door and open it, finding a fully dressed Valentia on the other side, as expected.

"Even when answering the door, you have to have that helmet on, huh?" Valentia sighs.

You simply nod. You never knew when you could be ambushed. You've heard some assassins were very adept at mimicking the voices of other people, after all.

"Well uh, is Morgan up?" Valentia asks, shifting around nervously. "I'm really sorry to have to ask you of this so early in the day, but, uh, that giant eagle of hers just landed in the courtyard and... and I think he's looking for her. We're trying to calm it down but, well, nobody wants to get near it."

You hold up one finger to tell Valentia to give you a second as you close the door. You then calmly walk back to the bed where you start patting Morgan's head a bit more vigorously this time.

Morgan's tail wags uncontrollably as her eyes open, still not fully conscious of what's going on.

"Oh... morning." Morgan mumbles as she rubs her eyes as her ears twitch. "Is something going on?"

You point your thumb over at the door.

"Oh, so there IS something going on." Morgan sighs and then she pauses as her ears twitch even more. "Oh no, did Engel follow us here?!"

You nod.

"Oh no, this is NOT good!" Morgan groans as she quickly leaps out of bed, now fully alert. She pulls on the bare minimum of clothes needed to be presentable, leaving behind her armor and combat gear.

You merely calmly start putting your armor on. You had to maintain your appearance, especially when on the land of your rival knightly order. Morgan naturally finishes first and throws the door open.

"Where is he, Vally?" Morgan asks.

"Are you really calling me that n-" Valentia pauses as tries to focus on the task at hand. "In the courtyard! Follow me!"

"Are you coming?" Morgan asks, turning to you.

You just nod and motion for her to go. You'll catch up later.

"Um, all right, just hurry!" Morgan follows Valentia into the hall and disappears from sight.

You continue to finish pulling on the last bits of your armor before jogging after the two girls. Finding the courtyard wasn't hard, though, since it was the only place where there was a shrieking giant eagle snapping its beak at anybody that dared try to approach it.

Already, there was a group of Paladins who had formed a defensive ring around Engel, keeping him penned in with a large shield wall. You were on an upper level, so you could get a good view of the action. It was then you could see Morgan and Valentia dashing in, Morgan making a beeline straight to Engel.

You look for a way to get down and see a flight of stone stairs, and make your way to it.

However, as you reach the bottom of the stairs, you find your way blocked by a pair of Paladins.

"Well look at what we have here." One of them says, arms crossed. "A Black Templar wandering around in one of our cathedrals."

From the shadow being cast over you, you could immediately tell that the top of the stairs had been blocked off as well, eliminating any chance of retreat. Looks like this was planned.

Looking behind the pair in front of you, you saw another pair of Paladins stationed at the end of the hallway, apparently to direct traffic, and therefore unwanted attention, away from the stairs.

Seems like even knights weren't above what amounted to a back alley brawl.

Well, you suppose you could do with a little morning sparring. None of the Paladins were visibly armed from what you could tell, so it was fairly clear they were only trying to intimidate.

As if trying to intimidate a Templar was a wise move in the first place.

The most obvious course of action was to just charge through the Paladins in front of you. By choosing the stairs as their battlegrounds, the fools gave you the advantage of the high ground against them. However, you would have to worry about their rearguard at the end of the hall.

It seemed like there were less Paladins up the stairs where you came from, with only two instead of four. However, they held the high ground advantage on you.

The first line of Paladins don't even stand chance, as you easily use your built up momentum to bowl straight through them, knocking both knights down flat on their backs with a loud CLANG as their armor clattered on the stone floor.

The ruckus caused the second line of the Paladins to turn and see your approach. They were a bit too far away for your downwards momentum to carry over to them, but you've at least managed to swing the odds a little closer in your favor.

Plus, maybe you could take advantage of this shift in the balance...

You manage to knock one of the Paladins aside, sending him tumbling the ground from a hard shoulder check, your pauldron slamming solidly into his chest like a battering ram.

However, the final Paladin doesn't go down so easily, planting his feet firmly on the stone floor and absorbing your charge. Very quickly, you find yourself stuck in stalemate, with neither of you being able to gain ground on the other.

However, dragging this on longer was at your disadvantage, since the Paladins you had knocked down where beginning to recover. It was only a matter of time before they attacked you from behind.

You glare at your adversary, his face obscured behind his own helmet.

Your helmet crashes against your opponents, creating the sound of a miniature thundercrack as you do so. Your opponent reels backward, temporarily stunned, giving you the opening you needed. You grab the knight's breastplate collar and pull hard, throwing him down on the ground with a loud CLANG.

At this point, the last two Paladins who had been blocking off the top of the stairs had finally reached the bottom, but were clearly distracted by the sight of their comrades laid out all over the floor. You had the opportunity to slip away but...

You decided that in this instance, discretion was the better part of valor and quickly make your escape from the scene, leaving behind a number of dazed and confused Paladins strewn about on the ground.

Thankfully, none of the clerics you pass by in the hall pay you any heed, and you make it to the courtyard with no further trouble. However, upon arriving, you notice that Engel has already calmed down, nuzzling his head against Morgan while Solana was apparently healing the arrow wounds he had suffered the day earlier.

"Oh you poor thing." Solana coos as she presses her hands against Engel's side. "War beasts always have it the hardest."

"I'm still kinda amazed that you actually tamed one." Valentia says, looking at the scene with her arms crossed.

"Almost sounds like you're jealous." Morgan grins.

"O-of course not!" Valentia huffs and she finally catches sight of you. "There you are! Where the heck have you been?!"

You just simply shrug. The whole little run in with the Paladins wasn't worth mentioning.

"Huh, well, you better be careful in the halls then, if you lose your way here so easily." Valentia cautions.

"All right! We're all done here!" Solana says cheerfully.

"Okay, Engel, go!" Morgan stands up and points to the sky.

Immediately, Engel flaps his wings, blasting everybody in the courtyard with powerful gusts of wind as the giant eagle claws his way into the air. Finally, he gains enough lift and rises higher in the sky going wherever an eagle goes during the day. Probably to hunt.

Now, with that little bit of business done, how about we get some breakfast?" Solana smiles. "I'm making pancakes today!"

"Really-?" Valentia's eyes brighten before she catches herself and coughs, regaining her composure. "Sounds nice."

"Huh? What are those?" Morgan blinks curiously.

"Oh dear, don't tell me you've never had pancakes before!" Solana gasps. "What about you, Templar?"

You just tilt your head curiously at Solana. Honestly you've never heard of that type of food before.

"Oh dear." Solana gasps as she puts a hand up to her mouth in horror. "I knew the Templars generally live a very ascetic lifestyle, but I never knew it was THIS bad!"

Solana then rolls up the sleeves her shirt and then storms off at a blistering speed.

"Valentia! I'm starting breakfast now! Make sure our guests reach the dining hall!"

"All right, Mom!" Valentia nods as she turns to you and Morgan, giving you a look as if you were both some sort of strange monster. "You two seriously never had pancakes?"

You both shake your heads.

"Really?"

"Well, I've basically lived my entire life eking out a living in the middle of the forest with minimal contact with civilization like a hermit." Morgan points out. "And the Templar here comes from an order that pretty much hates all forms of fun."

"You make a great point." Valentia nods. "Which makes this day extra special, then!"

And just like that, Valentia gets behind you and Morgan and starts practically shoving you forward.

Instead of going to the main section of the dining hall, where all of the standard ranking clerics and Paladins ate their meals, Valentia guided you up to a higher level, where you saw a flawlessly set table on a balcony overlooking the Cathedral grounds, as well as a good chunk of Eisenwand. Sitting at the head of the table was Solaire himself, in a rare moment where he was out of his armor. It seemed like he was busy reading a stack of papers, a pair of spectacles on his eyes betraying his advanced age.

"You're here early, Dad." Valentia frowns. "Figured you'd be sleeping in."

"And miss your mother's pancakes? Never!" Solaire laughs and he turns and sees you and Morgan. "I hope you two have had a good night's rest?"

You nod.

"Yes, we did." Morgan responds. "I'm surprised how... luxurious everything was."

"We do need to appease the odd noble or two from time to time, and they have very particular needs." Solaire nods. "And, well, nobody has been giving you any trouble, have they? I know the current situation between our orders is not exactly ideal at the moment..."

You just shrug and shake your head. No point in worrying Solaire about that minor scuffle.

"Ah, that's good to hear." Solaire nods as he sets his papers and spectacles aside. "Vally, did you wash you hands first?"

"Yes, daaaaaaaaad." Valentia groans. "I ALWAYS do that before eating. Why do you have to keep asking that?"

"Just to make sure." Solaire chuckles.

"All right everybody, ready to dig in?" Solana says cheerfully as she walks in, carrying a tray full of some sort of flat, disc shaped pastry.

"Of course!" Valentia nods rapidly. Apparently this was one of the few times Valentia was willing to let her youth shine.

Well, you do have to admit, it DOES look very, VERY good.

You see Valentia eagerly slather her share of pancakes in what looks to be butter and some sort of syrup before cutting one of the pancakes apart and wolfing the smaller pieces down.

Learning from your example, you apply some butter and syrup to your piece and take a cautious bite of it...

The moment the piece of pancake touches your tongue, your vision explodes with color at the same time that your mouth explodes with pure flavor. The sweetness of the syrup, the smoothness of the butter, the fluffy texture of the pancake itself, and all of the myriad flavors and magic you were sure Solana had worked into the dough. It all just came together.

You could swear it was almost divine in nature.

"Hey, are you okay?" Morgan asks cautiously, tapping you on the shoulder. "You're not getting food poisoning or anything, are you?"

You shake your head. Your armor suddenly feels hot and heavy. You body shakes as it craves for more. MORE. There was an entire pile of pancakes on the table in front of you just within your reach...

You simply grab the entire platter of pancakes for yourself as you wolf them down as quickly as possible, self restraint be damned.

Morgan and Valentia just look on dumbfounded, while Solaire laughs heartily at the sight and Solana only smiles.

"Haha! I suppose the Templar does have a weakness after all!" Solaire chuckles.

The next few minutes are sort of a blur, but the next thing you remember was suddenly feeling full and bloated for the first time in... well, a long time. As a Templar, your diet was often strictly controlled, so this was certainly a fresh sensation to be feeling.

"He ate the whole plate..." Valentia observes, crestfallen.

"Don't worry, dear, I can always make more!" Solana assures her. "Still, I never expected the Templar to take such a liking to them!"

"Me neither..." Morgan nods.

"Nah, it's fine. I was gonna head down to the training field anyways." Valentia says. "Hey, Templar, wanna come with?"

You nod at Valentia as you get up. Some training with her could do some good. You could teach the child a few tricks maybe.

Plus it would help work off this bloated sensation you were feeling.

"I'll stay behind and help Solana clean up." Morgan says rather quickly. "I'll meet up wiht you later."

You nod at that and follow Valentia out of the dining hall and towards the training field.

As you navigate the winding halls of the Cathedral, Valentia acts as your guide, leading you through the correct path. You were still somewhat dazed by the pancakes, after all.

Start with a lighter work up routine or basic drills. Work the pancakes off, then Challenge her!

You watch keenly as Valentia hacks away at a training dummy, the sort that would retaliate if attacked by spinning around every time it was hit.

While Valentia's form was perfectly serviceable, you noticed that there was room for improvement in her fight style. In particular, she needed work on her...

You figure that Valentia needed to work on her offensive skills a bit. Her attack moves were still a bit slow and sluggish, so you showed her some basic but proper moves and techniques for properly using her short sword in practice. It wasn't anything too complex or groundbreaking, but Valentia seemed to appreciate your advice all the same.

However, you still couldn't quite shake the feeling that innocent times like theses weren't going to last for much longer.

>And that's it for tonight! With the conclusion of Macross, we're going to change things up, so I'll be running Frontier Knight twice a week on Friday and Saturday! So see you on Friday!
