It has been hundreds of years since the destruction of the old world. Large cities have turned into rubble and been taken over by monstrosities created by the old war.

What remained of humanity has taken to the wilderness, where forests grew again and rivers flowed. There they began seeing and contacting strange new races. Large green humanoids known as orcs, tall and slender men known as elves, and many other less sizeable races.

Eventually, humanity regressed to the levels of ancient, iron age societies. Families turned into clans, some larger, some smaller, and clans united into tribes. The tribes formed villages in which they collaborated in order to survive in this new harsh world.

You are one such tribe, living close by pine forests and a great, wide river. Close to you is one of the ancient cities. Marvels of old technology that now stand as beacons of the knowledge lost.

Most recently, the warriors made a foray into the northern forest, where strange sounds were heard by lumberjacks. There they followed tracks made by an unknown entity, until eventually reaching a pair of recently cut off feet, their skin green and their apertures oozing thick red blood. Too small for a man, and too strange too. Of the 15 warriors, various veterans mentioned legends of wood elves. The way back was uncomfortable and even dreadful, all warriors felt observed, it was as if the way looped and hours were spent under a surprisingly scorching sun. Eventually, some brave young men could find a way to walk a straight path back home.

The warriors returned home, heading off to report to the three patriarchs ruling the tribe. In their large government hut, the patriarchs listen intently to their report. The cut off feet could be seen as a bad omen by the villagespeople, freezing the woodworking economy of the village.
>Ignore the feet, they are probably from a child that got lost in the forest and the warriors didn't look at them hard enough. Maintain the current woodworking operations.
>Whatever they are from, it seems those species know what harm is. Keep a steady guard by the lumberjacks at all times to ensure their security.
>It seems we have angered some sort of holy wood spirits. Tell the villagespeople to bring food offerings to them and keep the woodworking at a reasonable level as to not anger them further.

The three men eventually come to a conclusion. Whatever these things are, they seem to bleed as much as humans do. So a few warriors will deter them from bothering our woodworkers. The eldest warrior says that 5 men would be needed at all times to watch over the peasants working the treelines. Reducing potential scouting parties to the ten remaining men.

With that matter settled, a few weeks come to pass, eventually leading into late spring. Most of the arable lands have been taken care of, no incidents have been reported in the woodworking area, and the soldiers who came back from the woods sick have recovered. From the southern dirt road, a large party of people can be spotted, they number 26 in total and are accompanied by the same number of adult weredogs.

They are hailed and their leaders express their desire to speak with the rulers of this tribe, so they are led to the hut of the Patriarchs. The leaders of the party are tall, tough and full of scars. They explain that they are the Woolve Clan, and that they've heard of the proposition for wardog tamers. A couple from the Woolve Clan are willing to stay in the Tribe so long as they recieve a roof to live under and weredogs to tame. In exchange, they request 10 weredog puppies. The patriarchs must choose.
>Accept the demands and prepare housing for the couple.
>Haggle with the tamers, give away 6 puppies instead.
>Refuse the trade.

The patriarchs feel that they have no need to give away so many of the puppies, the animals will easily be fed with kibble and those that can't be fed can be sold away for gold. They haggle with the leader of the Woolve clan, citing the youth and lack of experience of the couple settling into the tribe. Eventually, the Woolve clan leader accepts the offer, and recieves his 6 puppies. The couple from the Woolve clan present themselves on the next day, after saying their goodbyes to their families. The man sports a shaven head and a small beard, while the woman has her hair short and scraggly.

The two of them settle nearby the kennels, and spend most of their time taming the weredogs, the female first, then the puppies. They say the process could take all the way from a month to a year, depending on how receptive the weredogs are. The puppies will take a full year to mature, they also mention that them being from the same pack might cause inbreeding, giving them poor fertility.

The patriarchs consider the weredog issue to be taken care of, now a new path of activity could be taken. Considering that the warmth of summer approaches, it could be a good time to concentrate on external activities, but the tribe is still young, concentrating further on domestic matters could help.

Choose a path to undertake:

>Develop our farmlands. Install proper fences, delimit areas owned by each clan, get rid of pests.
>Develop our woodcutting industry. Make proper sheds and trade for better tools.
>Construct a bridge to more easily cross the river that heads to the ancient city.
>Develop our goat and sheep pastures further. Make proper enclosures, ask for the tamer weredogs to be trained as herders.

The summer project was decided. All capable hands would give some time to setting up proper fences, small stone walls, and the making of proper agricultural tools.

The peasants were delighted that the farmlands recieved such care, and morale rose all around the tribe. The first half of summer was merry, and even a small festival was made, bringing in some visitors form nearby villages.

The warriors of the tribe came with a petition to continue exploring the city, and recover the stash that the first scouts left off. Five young men have offered themselves to go, their morale is high.

The five are allowed to go onto their expedition. They swiftly pack up their gear, taking supplies to help bring back whatever great loot they may find in the city.

They are counselled by the elders, who mention to put caution over bravery. They must return.

At this time of summer, it takes longer to find a good spot to cross the river, some fishermen mention one a good walk north. When they reach it, the warriors see some strange folks enjoying a swim in the calmer current. As soon as the warriors are spotted, the young men head back to their clothes and pick up their gear. Intricate white shirts with grey jackets and strange cloth caps.

The strangers all sport short blonde hair, and most noticeably, beards of various lengths. The man with the longest beard, who seems to be the eldest, dresses himself and orders the rest to do so as well. They eye you warily as they pick up some sort of long, well crafted knives.

(Sorry about the long pauses, got some shit going down)

The leader of the small party, a man barely into his late 20s, steps forward and lays down his sword, still sheathed. The blonde youngsters look at him, with various degrees of cautiousness, some with curiosity. Their answer comes with their leader sheathing his knife. He then signals to the rest of his men, who promptly begin to march towards the north, following the river. After that, he bellows from his side of the river.

"Peace, we leave at once. We have nothing to discuss with you." He says, he is firm, staring at you. Then he begins walking away, following his band.

There is incredulity in the eyes of the young warriors. These lads seemed too reclusive to be from one of the villages of the south, and never had they seen a people so uniform in their apparel and hairstyle. No matter, if they had no wish to speak, then there was no way to make them speak. One of the warriors proposed a plan to follow them without being noticed, but others said it was too brash, and that they shouldn't spur the ire of their elders.

While two of you warriors can get into perfectly hidden position, the other 3 get easily spotted by the blonde men. Their leader confronts the three of your men. He seems to be in a deep anger. Suddenly, catching your readied men offguard, small bolts of lightning begin emanating from the eyes of the leader of the few as he yells in anger, asking for your men's intentions and the if they know the meaning of honor.

The 4 blonde youngsters who were sent off earlier quickly unsheathe their weapons and come to confront your men while attempting to calm down their leader, who seems to be entering some sort of trance-like state. "Don't do this Loodevig!" the leader of your band can overhear.

Your three men who were revealed are, of course, kind of shitting their pants at the moment.

Thank you for doing the dirty work.

The sight of a man displaying lightning through his eyes is a frightening one, no matter who you are. The men take up their flight response with no qualms and begin running. In the distance, no other sounds can be heard outside of the goldhaired men's voices. It seems the lightning man is not pursuing.

After a long run, the band returns to the spot of the river where they encountered the strangers. A few minutes to breathe and off they go to the city. They laugh and joke about what happened, some of the most superstitious say that the man was a thunder god. No matter, it's far away now.

Reaching into the city, as always, they pass by the weredog lair in the residential boroughs, eventually reaching back to the commercial area. All's quiet. The young warriors wander into the mall where the cache was left abandoned and thankfully, it is still there and in one piece.

As before, a large main street heads further into the city, with more of the ancient concrete buildings, some destroyed, some picked clean. There are still the paths that go through smaller streets and alleyways, which could provide a sneakier approach. No signs of the Shadow Walker, as it came to be known. Some fear seems to seep into the men knowing that the Shadow walked this very ground, but they make sure not to show it.

After a few hours of scurrying around the alleyways, destroying a few doors, busting into ancient homes now rusted away, your men have found various valuable trinkets. Old ceramics, pottery, strange devices with odd ropes coming out of them, even some well built cages for smaller animals. All which could bring some good price back at home.

The greatest find was by far one made by the youngest of the band. A firearm, made of tough steel and with a handle of wood. These are only heard of in stories by great raiders. He mentions that he found it stashed in some derelict drawer in a bedroom. They are quite pricy back at home, though, as far as they know, no firearm has ever been seen doing its purpose. It will serve as a great enticement to bring new adventurers to the village as well.

Happy with their find, they head back through the alleyways with a filled rucksack that they wish to stash back at the mall. In the last street to reach the mall, they find a horrifying sight. A strange shadow, its contour seemingly buzzing, as if fighting the light it is walking on, blocks their path. It is featureless, apart from two lights emanating from its head, where a man's eyes would be. It's not huge as the Shadow Walker was, but it is more the size of a regular woman.

"Return..." it says. Its voice is more of a screech coupled with static, it says something else, but it can't be discerned. It raises its hand, with constant spasms, and points at the revolver proudly held by your soldier.

"Father... My..." it says. Compared to the anger heard before, now it seems more of a melancholic sound. But still absolutely inhuman. The shadow advances towards your men, seemingly struggling to do so.

Your men take fighting positions, shield to the front and sword unsheathed. The boy holding the gun sheathes it wherever he can and is also ready to battle.

>Try to speak to it. Ask what it is.

The eldest warrior attempts to speak to the creature. He asks it what it is and what it wants. Small beads of sweat begin coming down the forehead of the men.

"I... So long... Years... Please... Give. It. Back." it says. It obviously replied to your warrior. It seems to have a hard time even pronouncing the words. It takes its featureless hands to its equally featureless face, hiding its eyes.

"Stolen... Life... Stolen... Please... God... Heaven-" it continues rambling as it approaches you in small steps, each of them jittery and cripping the men out.

"My... Peace... Give. Back. Or I will... Kill." it says as it stops. Its eyes now uncovered, the light from them shining harder. The men begin feeling sick as they look into it. They take away their eyes. The nauseating feeling of fear overtaking them.

Since the creature seems to understand your speech, your men decide to establish negotiations, as any good man from your tribe would. You offer it the revolver, as the light in the creature's eyes recedes, you ask it if it can give anything in return for your tribute.

With a clearer voice, it responds. "God. Shall hear of it." The static is still heard, but the voice behind seems calmer. The men can tell that it sounds like a woman's voice. "Please. Return."

The man with the revolver looks at the eldest, the leader, waiting for his decision.

The leader of the band nods, he signals to the younger to return the revolver. The young man takes a long, hard look at the revolver. He then lays it on the ground and kicks it towards the shadow. The shadow does the motion to pick up the revolver, but instead of picking it up, it seems to be swallowed into its body. "My... Thanks." it says, and a beam of light engulfs the whole being, blinding your men. When they can take a look at it again, they see it disappeared.

Swords and sheathed and shields are strung, while they pack up all other things they found. Some of the men seem sad about the result of the ordeal, firearms are precious and most of all prestigious. The eldest believe it was the wiser move, so as to not anger the creature.

As they return to the mall, they find that they have enough stuff for two people to carry. There's five in the band.

The band gathers after a short rest, finding the shadow, though terrifying at first, now seemed more like an exciting story that could be told around the village. Filled with courage, they decide to step up and continue the scavenging run.

They pick their arms and shields and begin their walk down the main road. Various large buildings are here, most seem like shops, some larger, some smaller, but all could house relatively useful items for the tribe. Thankfully, it seems there is still no sign of activity around the area.

Treading through the derelict buildings, it seems most of them dealt with items that long expired their usefulness. Nevertheless, the art drawn upon them, bearing the name of the great families who produced the items, still persists and could fetch a good price. At some point, two of the men come to a great find within one of the buildings. A large circular door of steel broken down with age, and behind a door within the room it protected. Books.

Though fragile and brittle, the books seem to have been kept safe with great care. The eldest remarks that even with that much care, it should be pretty much impossible for paper, even the paper of the ancients, to be in this good of a state.

Even then, these books hold the secrets of the ancients. From them you can extract knowledge that would allow the deciphering of the ancient tongues, then the knowledge contained within them. Not that anyone in the tribe could possibly do that, but it would fetch a grand price from the right merchant.

>Take the books. Carefully not to break them, and bring them to the stash.
>Leave the books for now. It might be another shadow's precious item.

As they fetch the books, the warriors are anticipating something terrible and horrifying to happen. Yet nothing does. They finish stacking the books carefully then cautiously pick up the rucksack they are in and lead it outside. They await for something bad to happen again. Nothing. The other warriors come to check their finds, they have found little more than the usual baubles, but are wide eyed when they see the stack of books in the sack.

As they return, one of them checks behind, this time his widened eyes correspond more to fear. In the distance is the gigantic bipedal shadow. Larger than the first time it was met. Sitting cross legged in the road to the city. It seems to be watching over the men, its eyes shining. It is unmoving, simply observing the party at this great distance.

The men continue walking, constantly eyeing the shadow for any suspicious movement. It jitters and has spasms, but in place. It shows no sign of movement.

As they reached the mall, they stash up and find that they have enough stuff to put on 3 men. Two remain on the lookout outside for strange movements from the beast, which remains still.

>Continue exploring the city outskirts, go deeper into the alleyways.

The men begin packing up everything. Three of them need both of their hands to keep the rucksacks steady. The one man with the books can't afford to throw it if a sudden fight were to come either. As they leave the mall and rejoin with the other two, they take a last look at the shadow, which remains still and seated. A wind begins flaring up, even throwing their hair back and making leaves and dust fly. The wind comes from the shadow.

"My... Children..." the very wind seems to whisper into their ears. A calming and sleep-inducing feeling begins overtaking the men, it's as if it came from the voice of the wind. They can barely move and their legs feel like they're failing. They consider sitting down for a bit longer. The shadow starts getting up.

"I pardon... Your sins." the wind now says, the shadow begins walking, slowly, towards the warriors. The men barely have any strength to move, the eldest must make a decision in his last moment of clarity of mind.

>Hide in the mall.

As you talk to it, a laugh begins echoing in the wind. Soft, motherly, endearing even. It is hipnotyzing, the youngest men begin softly laying down on the ground, as if to sleep. Meanwhile, the shadow continues on its slow treck towards you.

The eldest begins falling down, and he asks what the sins of your people are, and how you offended it. The Shadow's laugh seems louder in his ears, now sounding like an old gruff man's voice, calming, fatherly.

"My children... So... Logical..." it says. "Feel... My... Embrace... Feel... Love...". The wind smooths over, caressing all of the men gently.

As the last sentence is spoken, the feeling of sleepiness amplifies.

The urge to lay down and rest is almost irresistible. Almost. The leader of the band can muster the will to head inside the mall, closing the entrance as he can while his comrades lay down to sleep helplessly. The wind can no longer hit him, and he starts regaining his faculties.

A few extremely stressful seconds go by as the leader begins realizing what is going on. Not knowing if his comrades are dead, cornered in a derelict building, the stashes laying outside. He is barely 25 and the fear of death is overtaking him. Slowly, a static sounds begins creeping up outside. Never had he felt his heart beating this fast. Courage begins retaking him as he thinks of his fallen comrades, he does not wish to see them die while he stands safely behind a door, yet terror still grips his mind.

From outside, he now hears the static worryingly close, it's mixed in with small thumps, which sound like footsteps.

>Go out, confront the beast face to face, if it wishes to take someone, let it be him.

The eldest knows that it is his duty to protect the young. If they die here and he survives, how could he ever face his folk back at home? How could he call himself a man? He unsheathes his sword and unslings his shield. If he lives, tales would be told of him, if he dies, at least he'll have died like a brave man.

A few more seconds to convince himself and he opens the door wide, shield first, sword at the ready, as he approaches the shadow beast which grows ever closer. The beast comes to a halt, its eyes shining greatly for a second when his sight goes over to the eldest. A few tense seconds come to pass while the warrior comes closer to it and steps in front of his comrades. The wind is gone, its sleepy touch lost.

"Fight me!" the man says as he hits his shield with his sword. "Leave them and fight me!" The beast's stare does not tell of its emotions, if it feels any that is. But the beast remaining in a halt and watching the man bash his shield might indicate surprise.

As the man grits his teeth for the coming, probably unwinnable battle, a great laugh emanates from the beast. Static and broken, torn by power untold. It laughs and laughs. The eldest feels fear yet he bites down into it even more.

"Fight..." the beast says. "Me!" it bellows in its horrifying voice. It assumes a fighting position like that of a beast.

The young man bashes his shield one last time, taking in a deep breath and rushing towards the shadow. Again, the shadow seems to stay still in surprise. The man approaches, the static sound encroaching all around him, and ominous feeling of death surrounding him. Yet he persists and slashes the leg of the silhouette.

Nothing. In fact, his expectation to hit something solid even betrayed him and he nearly lost his footing. It was like slashing some sort of dense air. Again, the Shadow roars a mighty laugh.

"Brave... So... Brave... My... Child..." It says, it then turns back and swings an arm down to the warrior, who deftly avoids it. The fist hits the ground and does it no harm, its shape even adapts like water hitting the ground.

"Interesting..." It says pausedly. "Face... Death..." the shadow seems to emanate a pulse from his body, a circular gust of force pushing the warrior back with great strength.

The attempts to resist the gush of wind are futile, the warrior is slowly sent flying. Thankfully, with some good footwork, he is able to remain standing and facing the monster. The beast turns to face him as distance is closed, its eyes glowing a small but strong white light.

The tribal warrior bashes his shield once more. He mutters a prayer, asking for the help of his ancestors. There will not be many more strikes, he is fatigued from roaming around the city, the pulse of air felt like it did some damage, his armor seems to weight twice as much now. No time to uselessly attack the shadow's limbs.

The leader realizes that it's do or die. Not knowing if the shadow can grow tired, the disadvantages will simply pile upon him and the shadow's strength will pummel him eventually. The only apparent weak spot are its eyes, who knows if they actually are. It's time for a gamble. He prepares for one last attack, taking position for a charge.

Meanwhile, the shadow awaits. Looking at the warrior with its intense gaze. The warrior then blasts off into a run. The creature, expecting a low blow, times a good sweep for when the warrior should come. But he doesn't.

The beast looks up in surprise to see the exhausted warrior in the air, flying towards him. His visage shows how great of an effort he is making. All of his strength sapped by the jump, he weakly slashes at the beast's throat, unable to reach its eyes. As he lands again, the warrior can barely stand. He landed on his knees, with his leather greaves absorbing part of the impact, but his fatigue gets the better of him, and he remains in that position.

The beast looks down at the warrior, both are still and unmoving. The eldest can feel his mind fade into unconsciousness. His eyes droopy, sweating like a madman, all he can see is his sword and his shield in his hands, then the beast's feet right infront of him.

The warrior can not stand, slowly, his mind drifts into nothingness. His eyes barely open, the static now nothing more than a small buzzing as his senses cease to function. All he can see is the beast backing up. It seemingly says a few words, but he hears nothing more than a muffled, louder static, finally, he sees it raising its arm to deal the final blow. He closes his eyes, an excruciating pain overcomes him, then nothing.

The four others slowly wake up, aching all over from the terrible positions they took for their windy nap. As they rise, they check for the rucksacks, all are there. They check each of them, everything is there. Even the books, to their surprise. They question each other, wondering if what happened was even real at all or if the heat had simply gotten to them. Their answer is an easy guess, as they spot their leader lying on the ground, roughed up from the fight.

They run towards him, checking for breathing or at least a pulse. It is there, weak, but it is there. They all sigh in relief and sit down to rest their hurt bodies while one gives the fallen man some well earned water. The youngster serving the water mentions something.

"I never noticed the tattoo on his hands."

Wide eyed, everyone checks it, no one remembers any tattoo or even any sort of ritual drawing. The strange circular shapes aren't removed by water, and seem etched into the skin.

Home will have better medicine to fix broken bones and treat his open wounds. A few minutes of preparation and off to marching they are. The trip drags on, the sun scorches, fatigue had set in, and their bodies ached, but the eldest had to be saved. As they closed in on the river, they made a short stop to refresh themselves. It was then that the eldest opened his eyes.

One of the warriors approached him, asking how he was. The eldest shook his head a little and with a parched throat, he claimed he was fine and that he expected a mansion to himself back in the tribe. To the eldest's surprise, the man was looking at him with an odd stare.

"I didn't remember your eyes being green." he says.

The eldest laughs it off. "They're brown, go joke somewhere else."

But the rest back up the claim. The eldest's eyes are green now. He shrugs them off, telling them it's no time for antics as he drags himself to check his reflection on the water. They're green.

He touches his face and sees that the reflection is well and truly his. Then he sees the marks in his hands. He begins to feel fear. What did the beast do to him. He looks back to see his comrades backing up from him. Then he notices, a barrier of wind is moving around his body, forming shapes with the leaves. He tries to move out of it, and the gust of wind adapts to let his hand through the barrier. He jumps back in fear, thinking the shadow has pursued them, and the wind barrier explodes outwards, the shockwave making the cap of one of his comrades fly off. As he concentrates and moves his hands, he realizes that the wind flows according to his sweeps. As the situation is defused, the eldest finally regains some control over himself and the rest approach him. Best head home and try to see what is going on.
