Cold, the thought floats through your mind.

Inside a basement you lay against the corner like a broken doll, bruises covering your body. The only source of light is a flickering bulb hanging from its wire, illumination a staircase.

Wrapping your arms around your legs you try to sleep. Sadly, you cannot as every time you do, a restless feeling clings to the back of your head regardless of how tired you are.

Your consciousness numb, you try to remember who you are as time seemed to be stagnant, awaiting for you to be sold as a slave.

Everything was fine before this, everything was harmless. But it all changed when you were kidnapped from the orphanage, only to be rotting in this basement until someone buys you.

Thinking back, you wonder how you never grew, well except for your hair.

It gave you a complex since everyone else in the orphanage teased you about it, staying small and helpless; needing someone to help you where ever you go.

With a buzz the light-bulb burnt out, leaving only the moon to give light.

In the distant side of the basement a shuffling can be heard. You squeeze yourself to the corner, scared that it's the traders.

Your eyes shooting about the room, you hear a coarse, otherworldly voice call out to you.

"Why do you scare child."

You close your eyes, staying still as if you're invisible. Whatever spoke to you, it wasn't human.

The sounds of something moving closer resounds through the room, pushing away items of old until it stops right over you; a shiver goes down your back as you feel a looming presence before you, speaking into your ear.

"Why do you scare child, why do you turn away? I rather not make things...difficult,"

Slowly, you open your eyes to take a peek.

What was in front of you was a gigantic spider: its legs reaching one wall to another, blocking the last bit of moonlight with its body.

Making eye contact it moves, positioning itself so you can have a better view of it.

"See...that wasn't so bad child. Now things can progress."

"W-Who are you," you shakily say, "What do you want from me."

"My name is Vm'algoth. A forgotten god of old, from the time of the Assyrians to now. I want you to hold my blessing," it replied.

"I-I don't understand..."

"It is merely mercy child," it clarifies. "You have earned my grace. Now come hither, become a vessel of my divine power. Break free of this horror my child."

Coming closer the god raised its fangs, biting your chest. You cry in pain as it pumps venom into your body, shock traveling throughout the puncture. Your heart felt like it was gonna explode from all the adrenaline.

Once finished it retracted from you, looking down with its beady eyes.

"This will not kill you my child, the venom is of my essence. You shall have powers beyond a human," it says.

Scurrying backwards it fades away from your sight, leaving nothing behind.

"Who the hell is screaming!," said a man's voice as the basement door opens. "Can't you stay quiet you goddamn brat!"

Fear grips your mind hearing that voice; he's the slave trader who kidnapped you. Quickly, you try to think of something but terror keeps you paralyzed.

Frightened you stay silent, waiting for what's next.

"Answer me you brat!" he says, kicking you on the side.

Coming closer the man grabs your throat, throwing your small body back down as he kicks you repeatedly.

Toughing the man's blows you force out a yell, "G-GO!"

The spider regrows twice its size, landing on the man's back. Horrified the man flails around, trying to swing the it off but to no avail.

Stuck to his back it stabs its fangs, slicing and puncturing the man's flesh. At the same time, its hind legs spins a web around him, restricting movement.

Wailing, he falls down, weakened by the sudden pain and blood loss. All he can now do is shield his face with his hands.

Continuing to stab into the man's flesh the spider guts him, until finally he stops moving; now a bloody corpse on the ground. Sensing no movement from the victim it spins a web around the body, wrapping it in a sticky substance before standing before you.

Picking yourself off the ground you stay silent. You don't remember anyone else kidnapping you but it's better to be cautious.

Taking the spider into your arms, you carry it. "T-Thank you," you mutter, walking past the body carefully.

Climbing up the stairs you push open the basement door to a messy old house. Looking out of the cracked windows you see the moon is still over the horizon. You need to get out of here, you hate this place, but you can't walk out of the streets with these tattered clothes.

Looking around the house you find the dead man's room. Opening the closet you search his clothes; eventually you pick an oversized hoodie, changing into it as you throw away your tattered shirt.

Behind you is a mirror, showing your reflection. Long black hair covering your eyes, small body, weak complexion, slightly feminine, you just stare at yourself carrying your spider.

"I'll call you...Tsuchigumo," you say, naming the spider. Clicking, Tsuchi seems to like it. "C-Cool right? It's a name of a giant spider. Kinda like...Vm'algoth."

Placing Tsuchi on a bed you think about what to do. It's dangerous if people see a huge spider, especially when most of the world's population are afraid of them. She may even be captured and, and...

Calm down you say to yourself. Try to think clearly.

Tsuchi can shrink so it shouldn't be much of problem. Still the smallest she can be is still terrifying.

Quickly you get out of the house and into the street. You are now free from that hell, a miracle in your eyes. All because a god gave you mercy. Going down the sidewalk you wallow in the night, the moon about to fall.

Hours after escaping the house you see a convenience store, its neon signs lighting up the surroundings. Thinking about what it might have your stomach grumbles. You're hungry.

Looking through the store glass you see cheap food products, snacks, drinks, and other items.

The man's house...He must've had some money.

Dashing back towards the old house you rush through the door, searching for cash.

Looking through the empty cabinets and drawers you find that they're empty. Navigating into the man's bedroom you start searching there too, he's got to at least have some modicum of money.

Looking through the closet and opening the dressers you finally find a wallet. Opening it, you find the man's ID, credit and debit cards, and only 20 dollars. Beggars can't be choosers; you stuff the 20 into your pocket and begin running back to the convenience store.
When you came back the dawn broke, the sky turning pink as the sun rises

Entering the store you get hit with a wave of cold air, the store's conditioning cooling down your body. Even Tsuchi poked her head a little to catch the cool drift.

A lunch for us and strawberry pocky to share with Tsuchi
>>
Choosing a premade katsu lunch and a box of strawberry pocky to share with Tsuchi, you go to the cash register to pay for it.

"That'll be six dollars please," the cashier says tiredly. His eyes glazed from working the night shift.

Giving him the 20 dollar bill, the cashier takes it. Storing it in the register and giving you back 14 dollars.

"Here's your change girl, thank you for your purchase," the cashier thanks, oblivious to what he said. You thought to correct his mistake but you decided not to. You're not good with talking to other people.

Exiting the convenience store carrying a plastic bag in tow, you walk down the sidewalk wondering where to now. You don't want to go back to the orphanage since it houses terrible memories but where else can you go?

Coming by a park you sit on a bench. Taking out the food you bought, Tsuchi comes out of your sleeve placing herself on your shoulder.

The sky is lighting up now. Hearing the bustling of cars nearby, the city must be waking up.

Unsealing the katsu package you eat it. It taste good even if it's cheap, though the meat would've been better with some kind of sauce. You open the pocky box as well, setting before Tsuchi so you can both share it.

Finishing the food you throw it away at a nearby trashcan before strolling through the park.

You're tired; stretching your arms and yawning you look around for a place to sleep. The unrest behind your head is gone now, you can finally close your eyes without fearing being beaten awake.

You decided to stay at the park, you're too tired to search. The park doesn't have a lot of spots to hide in so you have to make due behind a bench.

Laying down you make yourself comfortable on top of the grass. Tsuchi scurrying up besides you, grows to about the size of your abnormally small body.

Now that you take a more detailed look at her you think about what type of spider she is. She's pretty soft and thick like a tarantula, but her build is more slim; something akin to a huntsman maybe. Either way, Tsuchigumo is pretty unique.

Cuddling closer to her, you close your eyes. In a long time you never felt this peaceful. The silence is very different when you were locked in the basement, it wasn't scary, it was tranquil. Moving around, your sores and bruises aches, only for it to be soothed by the cool morning breeze.

Slowly you drift off into sleep hugging a spider like a pillow.

A fog covers your surrounding as you realize where you are. A vast, grey nothingness to what it seems to be endless. All is quiet until a familiar grumble catches your ear.

"Welcome to my domain my child," an inhuman voice says. Slowly the fog divides in front of you, revealing Vm'algoth. "I see that you're getting used to your ability, well half of it."

"W-What do you mean half?" you stammer.

"My venom is just the beginning child, I called you into here to pour the other half of my blessing," the old god informed. "Now come hither once more, you may experience not only pain but madness."

Raising a foreleg, it gently tapped you between the eyes; at that instant your head burned up recounting painful memories. Everything molded into a red landscape as your heartbeat became louder, almost deafening.

Breathing heavily you crouch down, the rapid beating of your heart is making it hard to stand upright.

This pain was like no other, the terrifying emotions filling your head relight candles of recollection; bullied and outcasted by the orphanage kids, and....and the kidnapper. Everyday you feared him and he wasn't afraid to deepen it. After all what can a disobedient product do? It's sickening, disgusting, evilfoulnauseatingloathsomerepulsiveit's...it's...scary...

You ball up the horrid emotions inside you, after all it's in the past; you need to realize that you are free. Staying silent, the ends of your mouth fold into a little smile, tears running down your cheek.

"I have Tsuchigumo...." you murmur. The first friendly being(?) you ever had. She helped you escape that nightmare; because of her, you avoided a fate that may be worse.

Your beating heart starts to relax, but the deafening sound stays. Feeling room in your chest again, your breathing becomes more stable; the emotions and pain subsiding.

Letting out a deep, heavy sigh, your body shakes. That hellish experience is over, but you don't know what that god will do next.

"I have finished our connection my child. The first step into power is madness; in the past, people who would form pacts with me would go insane whilst losing everything. You have passed," the giant spider congratulated you. "throughout the times I've been called by many names and been called out by many empires: dynastic Egypt, the Romans, and others. You are now one of the few who has succeed. You are now 'my' child."

After its proclamation everything began to fade, the fog enveloping the vast nothingness. Your head becomes dizzy as if on a carnival ride; till you blackout.

"Be ware my child, you are not the only one. Many others are out there with powers such as yours; be it from family of magicians, other pacts with gods, or born with them." the inhuman voice whispered, fading away from the waking world.

your sitting on one of the pews, standing before a statue; you don't recognize what the statue looks like, but it's a robed woman holding a lantern.

The place is quite huge, rows and rows of pews extend down the corridor with two giant doors behind you; that must be the exit. It looks like something from Italy or...an arts book.

Stained glass paintings high above the walls show pictures of religious figures. They're too abstract for you to figure what they're about, but you don't think too much of them.

Ahead of you is a platform with two small staircases leading up to it, a stand set in the middle of it; Behind the stand are two doors, juxtaposing the marble walls with a black color.

Let's explore a bit shall we.

Getting off the pews you explore the church's halls. Nothing looks strange, at least right now; the passageways are long, a red carpet sprawled on the floor everywhere you tread. The building is very, very pristine.

Back in the orphanage you used to read a lot of books; you stayed to yourself most of the time, locked in imagination while reading. You recall that one of them showed a cathedral somewhat like this church. It was beautiful, it wasn't just architecture, it was art.

Turning a corner, a library was at the end of the hall.

Curious you enter, the smell of archaic paper filling the air. Shelves and shelves of obscure titles, encyclopedias, and atlases parade around you; it was amazing, it made you feel excited, but you snap back into reality just as a voice calls to you.

"Ah, there you are. I was looking for you."

It was a woman's voice: sweet and motherly, something you aren't used to. Turning around, a woman in a black dress paced to you. She looked like a nun, but...wasn't? Her attire looked to be similar.

"I take it you're confused? Well, everything will be explained in just a moment, just follow me deary," she says in a comforting tone. "You know, when we found you at the park you were a mess. A girl your age should take care of yourself."

"...Who are you?" you shyly ask

"Me? My name is Mary Aunsbern, just call by my first name. Now come sweetie, you wouldn't want to be left in the dark about your situation now, do you?" she smiles, taking you by the hand.

Holding your hand like a child she leads you through the corridors; humming a certain hymn as she sways gently side by side, it's quite hypnotizing. Looking at her too much makes you heat up, the more you stare the more you outline her body...

You begin to blush, shaking your head from impure thoughts; still her appearance is alluring, you almost want to call her...mother...

Telling Tsuchi to climb onto Mary, she scampers across your arm after climbing out your hair. There, she hid under Mary's long dress without getting noticed luckily.

"Um...Mary. I'm a boy," you say quietly. You've told many people this, but it's somehow more embarrassing telling her.

Her eyes widen, surprised by the fact. "Really? I thought you were a girl because of how you looked," Mary apologizes. "Still, your hair is pretty; you're cute too, I bet girls would want a boy like you. Oh, and I almost forgot, what's your name?"

"Arakaiyo Kumo," you answer. "I'm also 16."

"Arakaiya, that's a nice name. I hope we get along together. Especially since your adorable for being at such an age," Mary teases you, making your heart skip a beat.

Mary continues humming her tune until you both stop in front of an office door. Opening it, Mary welcomes you inside before coming in herself.

There, you meet a shaggy looking man; he's wearing a striped button-up shirt with suspenders and slacks, beside his desk is a coat rack, hanging a coat.

"Ah, there you are. Take a seat, kid," he says casually.

Taking his offer you and Mary sit in front of his desk, waiting for him to finish stowing documents. Finally done, he takes a seat as well, holding his hands together; he coughs a bit to clear his throat before speaking.

"First things first, I'm Henry Os, any questions you would want to ask before I get things rolling, kid."

Glancing about the room nothing seems out of the ordinary: a painting is hung above the wall, a book case, and a grandfather clock, nothing...harmful at first sight; focusing your attention on Henry you start asking questions.

"W-Why am I here?"

"Why your here? There's two reasons for that. The first is that I found you in the park sleeping behind a bench with a giant spider that shrunk away. The second is that some of my intel told me about an influx of spiritual energy," Henry tells you. "Also speak louder a bit more kid, I'm getting old."

"Uh...That may be Tsuchi you," you say.

"Tsu- what?"

"Tsuchigumo, that's the spider that slept with me," you nervously clarify. At the same time you call her back; coming out under of Mary's dress, placing herself on your shoulder. "T-This is her."

"Huh, interstin'. As long as that thing doesn't attack us than it's fine," Raising a brow with a lenient expression.

Gulping, you ask your next question, "Who are you guys?"

"We're--how do you say it, an organization I guess? To put in perspective, there's a bunch of people, like me and Mary, who deals with magical stuff; things like demons, cults, and moderation between mage families. Oh yeah! We also have roots to the Vatican but we're separate," he fits in.

"Then what's gonna..." you look down, dismal in tone, "happen to me."

"That depends, we just got to give ya a little test," Henry says, before aiming a gun at you from under the desk.

Startled, your hair tried to sting Henry before he can shoot, but you were stopped right when you were gonna pierce; Mary was holding a knife against your throat, stopping you from striking him.

"Henry, don't do that, especially to kids," Mary scolds him. "Sorry that we scared you Arakaiyo. Henry does things a bit too extreme."

Silently you stay still, trying to figure out what to do next.

That would be hard, considering its hiding on mary.

We could actually kill them both and come out on top here, and its tempting to try. I don't like either of these shitheads already.

Lets just have Tsuchi climb onto Mary's head and sit there menacingly. We need to assert the fact that we can kill them.
>>
>>2759531
>you call her back; coming out under of Mary's dress, placing herself on your shoulder.

She's currently on our shoulder and I'm sure the time it would take for her to move to Mary is plenty of time to slit our throat.

I don't have a problem with asserting ourselves, I just don't think we're in a position to do so.
>>
Brief flashes of terrible memories enter your vision, causing you to hyperventilate; panicking, you fall behind your chair, crawling away against a wall. Tsuchi grows just enough for you to hug her, but you can't calm down.

Thin tendrils of your hair raise themselves, waiting for any hostile actions. They look alive, like snakes assessing their prey.

"Whoa there kid, sorry. I just needed to see what you can do," Henry explained himself.
He shows you the gun barrel which was empty. "There's nothin' there, see? Calm down before Mary kills me."

Throwing the knife above Henry's head, she scowls at him.
Approaching you slowly with a sad look on her face, Mary tries to reconcile, "We didn't mean harm, sweetie. Henry's an idiot but we're not evil. I'm sorry if you recalled something horrible."

Mary is saddened by this, creating a long face. "Please don't be scared. I'm not trying to hurt you; if anything i should be killing Henry right now," she says, eyeing down Henry who was sweating bullets. "Couldn't you done something more, subtle Henry? Look at Arakaiyo!"

"I'm a assassin Mary, I don't know how to gauge people's supernatural abilities!" he argues.

"Well look at him, he's scared to death!"

Your body shakes as all the the bad thoughts begin to go away. You need to get a grip on yourself, what was the purpose of god giving you powers if you can't? You're not weak anymore.

Staring at Mary you begin relax, your locks of hair contracting. She isn't a bad person, she's...motherly.
On the other hand your impression of Henry is mixed. Who suddenly points a revolver just to test someone.

Steadily coming closer, Mary wraps you into her arms, whispering assurances. The atmosphere pacified, Tsuchi shrinks and climbs back into your hair. You grip Mary's dress, nestling yourself into her bosom.

"Are you okay, sweetie? I'm right here," she says, cradling you in her chest.

You keep hugging Mary who is swaying you side to side, humming a lullaby.
Warmth fills your body; a feeling you never experienced, yet it's something you would gladly take.

"Er, so...I'd say things worked out fine," Henry joked.
Mary shot him another stare with the words I will kill you in her eyes, which made him jerk.

Settling down, you sit back down in front of Henry's desk again with Mary helping you a bit, you're still a little shaky.

"So...now that things are cooled, your set," he smiles.

Lifting your face, you stammer, voicing your confusion," W-what do you mean..."

Opening one of his desk's drawers, Henry gives you a silver necklace with a cross at the end. "You passed my test, now you're an official member of Babel."

Irritated, you raise a tendril to his face, this time Mary doesn't stop you.

Pressured, Henry made clear of what he meant. "That silver cross is given to members of the Babel Institute; they deal with magical problems like I told you before," his smile becoming more tense.

Interjecting, Mary details more, "Like Henry said, we take jobs ranging from demon hunting, assassination, and assisting mage families," she says, dangling her own silver cross. "Usually you take a test at the Institute itself, but a certain someone decided to do things his own way."

"Of course, the organization have people like you, so you'd fit right in," Henry says. "People within the place form teams with each other; Me and Mary are partners and we're one of the top."

"Sady," she flatly remarks."I can't believe a ex-priest like you works well, it boggles my mind. Still, he's clean at his job."

Your tendril loosens up, retracting it from Henry's face. He sighs in relief, reversing back into his carefree nature.

"Then will I be working with you..?"

"Yeah, kid. This whole church here is my house too, so feel free to pick one of the free rooms," saying as he spins his revolver. "I take it you don't have a home yourself, no?"

"I'll show them to Arakaiyo, Henry," Mary says, ushering you to follow. "Don't do anything else that warrants another reason to fling my knives into your head," pushing the door open.

"Got it, miss. Just make sure to take this one off the wall. It isn't a good decoration for my office," pointing to the previously thrown knife.

Exiting Henry's office you follow Mary who's gently leading you by the hands. She offered to carry you but you refused, you wouldn't handle the amount of embarrassment you would feel.

"Over there is the kitchen, there's the laundry room, through those doors is the lounge, and the medical room is besides there" Mary says, touring the church's facilities. "And here are the bedrooms; this part of the church used to be a monastery, but now it's been repurposed to serve as living quarters. Take your pick, sweetie."

You choose the room closest to the kitchen, who knows if you get hungry in the middle of the night.

Opening the bedroom door you sneeze, a wave of dusty air congesting your nose.

The inside was stark: there was only a bed, a window, and closet, it looked pretty good still. Jumping out of your hair, Tsuchi changed sized; she darts about getting familiar with the room before nesting herself on the bed.

"I'll leave you alone for now, sweetie. I need to take care of business. Sorry if the room is a bit messy," Mary says.

Giving a nod, you see her off till she passes the corner; this is where you'll be living now, it's better than nothing.

Going to the kitchen you grab a duster and vacuum. Your new room isn't very messy but the dust is a problem.

It took time pushing the vacuum considering it's one of the more bulkier ones, but you manage; hooking it up to a power outlet you start cleaning, thoroughly stroking the carpet.

The duster was for the more hard to reach places: behind the bed and closet you sweep it against the cracks and corners revealing dust bunnies and such. Coating the duster's feathers into a thick layer of gray soot..

Finished, you take a breathe of clean air. Storing back the vacuum and duster, you now have time to yourself.
Raising a lock of hair, it snakes alive. Testing how long it can be you stretch it as far as you can; extending, across the room, you narrowly you eye down the length: 245cm.

Playing with the tendril you test something else about it. Warning Tsuchi to hide for cover, she crawls under the bed.

Coiling multiple tendrils at once, you shoot them out. In all directions around you, your hair snapped into breaking speed, becoming spine-like.

Satisfied with your experiment you pull them back, turning into normal. You doubt it has the strength to lift something but its speed makes up for it.

Exiting your room, Tsuchi follows. Down the hall you see Henry, nailed to the wall with a knife. Meeting your eye he waves at you, motioning for you to come closer.

"Hey, kid. Thought I'd see you now that I'm finish with the documents. Wanted to tell you about a job we were sent," he says, seemingly oblivious.

You give Henry your full attention. He isn't evil, he's just idiotic.

"Huh, thought you'd ignore me," Henry says, pulling out a cigarette and lighter. "Well, the job we got from HQ is an assassination. A client wants a man named Alex Jones dead; a mafia boss," taking a puff. "Came to get ya; you'll need to know how we work so things are smooth sailin' you know? Also, new clothes for ya, kid," he says throwing you a pair of new clothes and shoes. A smile gets plastered on his face. "Made sure it matched our motif. Go get changed."

Doing as he said, you reverse back into your room. Changing out of the oversized hoodie and shorts, you slip on the outfit: it's something like Henry and Mary's, a white undershirt, slacks, shoes, white gloves, and a black coat. Remembering that Mary said he was an ex-priest and that you are in a church, the outfit gives off a priestly feel. Though, the coat is a bit big, you wonder how Henry got clothes this fast, with fitting size.

Putting on your silver necklace and Tsuchi joining into your hair, you go out to meet Henry who was still pinned on the wall.

"Lookin' good, kid. Tell ya the truth, the opposition between your feminine qualities and outfit makes a good match. Maybe I should've been a fashion designer," Henry joked.
Grabbing the knife, he pulled it out, causing him to fall unto the ground; getting up, he leads you outside the church. Standing there already was Mary, who was waiting by a car.

"Hey, sweetie, you look good in those clothes. Hopefully people won't mistake you for being one with the church," she complimented you.

"Mary, I am the church, hahaha!" Henry laughed before both of them entered the car.

Hopping in as well, you take the back seat, buckling yourself. Checking that everythings gone and clear, Henry presses the pedal, driving down the road.

You know how gangs and mafias work," Henry says. "Also, Jones bin dabblin' in some magic that may prove destructive."

"..."

"Nervous, kid?"

"Y-Yes," you answer.

"Don't be, everyone gotta start from somewhere," Henry cheers..

"Does that begin with a gun pointing at you?" Mary comments.

Driving through the city you look out the window: businessmen, laborers, girls with shopping mall bags, a whole array of people passes you; they walk around the streets among the bustle of cars, some looking down their phones, while others watch the streetlight change.

Soon, you reach the front of a huge mansion.

Parking the car a little ways from it, Henry inspects the estate, trying to figure out a way to get in.

"Anyone of you got ideas? We could just blow through the gate and the Institute would cover the whole thing for us," Henry says.

"Don't worry, I got this," Henry says, brandishing his revolver. "I'll shoot the camera, either of ya should go take care of the bozos there."

Shooting the security camera with the revolver, it echoed with a BANG.

Alarmed, the guards tried to notify security; however, Mary jumped in as planned, striking both men in the throats before they could call.

With the back entry cleared, all three of you moved inside. Hiding behind a row of bushes, Henry assesses what to do next.

"Looks like we're in the courtyard just behind the place," Henry says. At the same time a group of men come out; they must've heard the gunfire.

"There's too much for me to handle, I'll need help," Mary advised, looking towards you. "You'll need to cover my back, sweetie"

"I can provide cover, go in and clean them up," Henry ordered, getting in position. "Get ready."

Steeling yourself, you swallow your throat. Placing behind Mary, you get ready to follow her.

Dashing in, Mary sunk her daggers into the chest of man while incapacitating the other. Swiftly she made quick work one victim after another.

Trying to keep up with her speed a guard lunges at you catching you off guard, toppling your frame easily. Panicking, you close your eyes as your hair rips through the man; his wound decaying rapidly while he screams, drawing his last breathe.

Putting all your strength into your arms, you push the body off of you. The rhythmic beating of your heartbeat pounding on your chest.

You can still hear Henry having a shoot out, occupying the rest of the enemy.

Flashing another batch of knives out of her hands Mary throws a volley, blades digging itself into her targets. Immediately, she follows up with another strike, ending the skirmish.

Exiting cover, Henry picked up your hand, lifting you to your feet.

"Let's move, kid. Did, pretty great for your first kill," Henry jauntily says.

You take a moment waiting for your heart to slow down before giving Henry a slight nod, following him. Bodies litter the yard unnerved you stare at the ground, making an effort not to look.

Mary puts her hand over your shoulder to comfort you, "You okay sweetie, is it hard to look?"

You just give another nod to her.

"Come to me if you have anything to talk about, I'll be open," Mary consoled.

Advancing into the mansion, a peculiar atmosphere loomed.

"Is it just me, or are there a shortage of men patrollin' the place," Henry pointed out.

"You're right, but we have to stay on guard. Alex Jones might've done something, magic or not," Mary says

Through the empty halls, the mansion was exceedingly empty.

No one to be found you continue through the building, checking every room you come across. Even the master bedroom was empty.

Soon, you just about scoured every place your target may be. Except for the...basement.

The basement was kept from checking last because it was locked by a metal door; increasingly suspicious, you all deduced that he's in there. No one can't just disappear.

Henry knocked on the door, "This thing is solid steel and there's no key to the lock. We might have to bring in demolition."

"I'll keep a eye behind us, just in case someone or something comes for us. This mansion doesn't due a favor of being welcoming," Mary says.

BANG Henry kicked the door with the hopes of knocking it through, sadly he had to learn that solid steel isn't cooperative.

Stepping in, you form the smallest tendril you can make.

Inserting it inside you steadily feel about; it's like blindly sticking your hand inside a box trying to find something, except it's your hair.

Tediously worming your way around you found something that you can hold. Grasping onto it you push down.

Click

The lock falls off; the door to the basement is now open.

With a whistle, Henry thanked you, "Nice, kid. Now we can finish up the job."

Calling Mary over to let her know you opened it, Henry pulled open the steel door. The difference in air pressure let's out a cold air before subsiding.

Taking the lead you slowly descend down the stairs; you make Tsuchi climb up on the ceiling just in case anything catches you off guard.

Through the dark hall the only thing you can hear is the beating of your heart and shoes clanking against the metal floor. Each time you pass a light, things become more alien: weird markings, and trails of blood running ahead of you.

Your on edge. A little too on edge. It feels like some mass on your back is weighing you down.

"These are really complex magic circles Henry..." Mary says, analyzing the markings on the walls.

"I know. This guys been doin' something crazy," Henry agrees.

Further, you traverse the hall until you all arrive in a large facility. Big enough to fit a house somewhat. But that's not the important aspect of it; a mass of bodies are stacked in the middle. You recognize some of them wearing the same uniform as the guards.

"Holy shit. The fucker sacrifice the whole mansion!" Henry exclaimed.

"I did what was necessary," a voice said. "You are here to stop me, but soon I'll accomplish my goal. I shall break the conditioning."

Something rumbles underneath the corpses. Blasting out, a white amorphous being roars and alien scream. Its humanoid shape towering over you.

"Oh shit...The guy made a homunculus!" Henry screamed, already firing his revolver.

Henry and Mary keeping the homuculus occupied, you make your way to its blind spot; at least you assume that glowing ball on its head is an eye, right now its facing directly away from you.

Getting close enough you strike its leg. losing balance as it decays rapidly.

Moaning, the eye(?) swivels on you, lugging one of its arms in an effort to crush you.

Instinctively, you duck covering your head; sensing fear, your tendrils jab out, piercing and restraining the arm right before it hits you.

As strong as you can, you hold it back; a bout not in your favor. The mass of artificial flesh pushing closer and closer. Finally, the puncture wounds start to turn black as necrosis takes its toll. Soon enough, the whole portion of the arm falls off.

Creating space between you and the homunculus, you retreat back catching your breathe. even though two of its limbs are gone, it's still putting up a fight.

Dropping from the ceiling Tsuchi grows to maximum size, matching the homunculus.

Saving no time she immediately rams against the monster, catching it in a hold. It tries to resist, but sadly having two of its limbs gone proved a challenge; exuding as much strength it can muster, they lock themselves in a stalemate. Pushing and pulling one to the other.

Thankfully, Tsuchi holding it down was all she needed to do. Retreating as well, Mary met up with you and Henry.

"Think you can finish it off from here?" she asks.

"Yeah. The kid's friend is handling the fiend pretty good," Henry says. His gun lighting up with a blue glow, he aims it into center mass. "Listen, kid. ever wondered why I don't reload?"

"...Magic?" you guess.

"Bingo. All my ammunition is pure, 100% mana; though they're as strong as normal bullets. Imitations. But when I pump a little bit more power they become more than just that," Henry says smiling, focusing his attention to the homunculus.

"Sweetie, I advise you to stay back," Mary says, pulling you under her.

Struggling between each other, Tsuchi grapples with the humanoid; holding it still, enough for Henry to take advantage.

Taking in a deep breathe, the gun continues to glow, "SUNDANCER!"

In the blink of an eye, the gun fired; streams of blue ripping through the air. Unable to break free, the homunculus' body ruptured, seven holes inside its chest. The amorphous figure wailed. Signalling the battle was over.

Growing small, Tsuchi rejoined you. Retaking her place inside your hair.

With a whistle, Henry blew his revolver's muzzle, "I could've done that sooner but it kept flailin' around," he said. "You see, magic can be done to do all sorts of things, kid. In my case, I can make this here normal revolver shoot like a damn sniper; much stronger than one too."

"How though?" you question.

"Magic can be used with our without a catalyst. What a catalyst is are things like staffs, wands, and paper even. It just makes it easier to manipulate mana, that's all there is."

"So your gun is a catalyst?"

"Yup. It's my trusty partner besides Mary here, tahaha!" Henry laughed.

"Let's hurry. I appreciate you teaching Arakaiyo about magic but we have matters to deal with first," Mary intervenes.

To her word, you begin to progress; moving around the homunculus' corpse.

At the end was a double door. Pushing through, another staircase led upwards. Moving up, you then arrive at a clearing, the estate behind you. In the middle of it, a man in a suit stands before you; looking into the distance.

"You done well adversaries," he said out loud. "If your going to take my life, then your gonna have to work for it. For I, Alexander Emric Jones have achieved power; A fire in my stomach burning furiously." He turns around, ready to face you. "I am human! With my newfound ability I shall unveil the lies and corruption within America!"

"...This guys crazy..." Henry remarked.

Just like the previous fight, Tsuchi grows to her maximum size and rams Alex to constrict. But he wrestles back Tsuchi, grabbing her fangs like a bull and throwing her aside.

Mary comes in, stabbing her knife down; Alex dodges her strike creating space between them, in return she throws it, wounding him but it doesn't take him down.

Henry got a few shot into him as well, but it seems he's not taking any damage beside the damage he's bearing.

"The hell? Is this guy made of steel?" Henry says.

"I have trained muscle and body in combination with magic. The magic circles you probably seen is proof of that; NOW COME ON!" Alex yells. He pounds the ground creating a tremor, knocking you and Henry off your feet; Mary is trying to look for a opening, taking cover behind a nearby bush.

Still on your back you try to restrain him, wrapping locks around Alex's limbs; with another pair you strike him.

Alex struggles against you, trying to break free. Seeing the incoming tendrils, he only grabs one with his left arm; successfully you stung him, the site's skin decaying.

Grunting, Alex flexes. A force freeing him from your hair. Partially stunned, he lunges at your direction, punching you in the chest.

Mary engages Alex again, evading and counterattacking him. Now that he's taken serious damage from your sting, Mary got in a few hits in on him as well along with Henry.

Concentrating, you mold your hair into as many spears as you can manage. You then harpoon every single one straight at Alex's body.

Mary disengaged, dodging away from your direction.

Caught off guard, Alex takes the whole barrage; a fatal blow dealt. You impale him, his skin turning black as his body convulsed; all signs of life exiting his body. The battle of over.

Receding your tendrils, you call Tsuchi over, a wave of relief running down your body. You look to the horizon: the sun setting, orange painting the sky.

Mary runs up to you feeling your chest, "Are you okay, sweetie. I saw you take a powerful blow."

"I'm alright," you say. Though in reality it hurts.

"Geezus!" Henry says tiredly, falling down on the grass. "I thought this was an assassination, not a brawl...I guess the mission is complete."

"Let's go back to the church. The institute will clean everything up," Mary reassured, walking her way with you in tow.

Picking himself up, Henry follows, "Yeah...Let's go."

Back at the church, you go to your room, crashing onto your bed. Tsuchi takes her place near the pillow, nestling herself once more. What a day; a whole mess of things bundled up in a single day.

>>
You go to the kitchen, looking for something to eat. Fixing yourself a sandwich, you sit by the table.

Dizzying; after today you wonder what else you might see. It's a bit worrying, especially after confronting Alex Jones.

Finishing up the last of your sandwich, you go back into your bedroom, Tsuchi already sleeping...you think. Joining the bed you wrap around the blanket, drifting off as your body relax.

Good night.

---

Knock, Knock

You wake up, someone knocking on your door. Rubbing your eyes, you go temporarily blind as the sun's rays shines on your face. Yawning, you stay in bed for a moment, collecting your thoughts.

Getting up, you open the door to Mary, waiting for you.

"Good morning, sweetie," she greets, petting your head, not giving much of a reaction since your mind is still drowsy. "I wanted to let you know that breakfast is ready."

Nodding, you trail off into the hall, following the scent of bacon and eggs. Inside the kitchen was a plate ready for you; taking a seat, you start eating.

Coming in, Henry joins you at the table; playing with his revolver.

"How'd the night go. Still dazed, kid?" he says. "Looked like yesterday took you up for a spin, huh."

"Don't try to act tough, kid; you certainly don't look like the one," Henry seeing through your facade. He then tosses you a few hundred dollar bills in front of you. "Your share, kid. Especially with the Jones guy hittin' you in the chest. I even wondered if you're still alive when I woke up today," cracking a joke.

You pick of the wad of cash, staring at it intensely.

"All of this...?" you say in a confused tone.

"Yeah. All of it," ridding your doubt. "Anyway, I wanted to talk to you about magic. Remember what I told you in the mansion?"

"About catalyst?" you answer.

"Yup, but magic more than waving a stick. Come with me," Henry says, stepping into the hallway.

Hurriedly, you finish up your breakfast, placing the dish into the sink before following Henry. He then takes you outside, behind the church.

"Welcome to Henry's magic 101. First question, kid; what is magic anyway?"

You just stare at him blankly, a mix of trying to think of an answer and more confusion.

"Too late! The answer is that magic is the manipulation of mana. Simple, nothing more, nothing less," he smugly says. "You see kid, all it comes down to is how good you can control mana. With that, the sky's the limit. Though, the common man doesn't know mana exist and if he tries, it'll be a hella long time before he can grasp the concept."

"How do you control it then?" you question.

"It's like those hair things you use all the time. You know how to control them; just try to...feel it movin' in your body, kid."

Taking Henry's advise (although it's vague) you close your eyes, "feeling the mana flowing through you. A few moments later of silence, you feel something move throughout your body. This is mana. Reopening your eyes, the sensation halts as if it never happened.

You remember the fog, the vast, grey nothingness where the old god took you; his domain, as you recall. You recount the red landscape, warping around you as he finished his blessing. Trying your best to visualize it, everything grew silent.

"Welcome, child." a familiar voice grumbled. "You have certainly grown in mastery the last time we met. A impressive feat worthy of a reward. Since you achieved crossing into my world, what do you wish?"

Deceptive Stinger has turned into Antares Stinger

You stare at the old god blankly, curious to why it hadn't hurt.

"You overcame my test of madness the first time; granting resistance to it when you became my child," it answered. "Our time together is short as you're not strong enough to hold yourself in my domain for long. Any piece of knowledge you would request, my child?"

"Magic. What can you tell me about it?"

"Magic is the art of manipulating the mana around you into something greater. In ancient times, men would weave fire, create storms, and in special cases, see the future; sadly the practice has fallen into obscurity. Your familiar is a product of magic; namely a contract. A familiar's form changes in accordance to your power. Since I granted you such, it may have already changed," it says.

You listen to it, memorizing its explanation. But as Vm'algoth has said, your time here with it is short; you start to fade out of consciousness.

"May we meet again, perhaps longer, my child."

You wake up, sprawled across the grass. Henry poking your cheek.

"Hey, kid. Your awake! If Mary saw this, I'd have to be nailed on a wall again," he exlaims.

You get up from the ground, making way to your bedroom. What Vm'algoth said bothers you too much; about how familiars can change forms.

"Hey, kid. Where ya goin'?" Henry says, following behind you. Curious as to why you're riled up.

Arriving to your bedroom door, you open it. Scanning the room, nothing seems to be out of the ordinary.

Standing beside the bed, you take of the blanket to see what's hiding. Under the sheet was a girl, about the size of yourself. She looks at you, tilting her head.

"Tsuchi, is that you?" you say in reaction.

She doesn't say anything, but responds with a nod of agreement.

Continuing to stare at each other, the atmosphere becomes stiff. You would never expect Tsuchi to become like this.

Removing your gaze, you lower view downward. She isn't wearing clothes...Slowly, you become warm as your cheeks become red like cherries.

"Henry....Could you get some clothes," you ask.

"On it, kid. Took you a while to realized she's bear, haha!" Henry laughed, exiting the room.

His laughter only further deepened your chagrin, making you whip your eyes to your feet.

For the time being, you wrapped Tsuchi with the blanket; waiting for Henry to pick up some clothes.

The atmosphere heavy on your back, you rack your mind on what to do or say while Tsuchi's oblivious to the current situation.

"Can you...turn back?" you say skittishly.

She nods at you before her body became a black silhouette, forming back into a spider. Crawling on top of your head, placing herself on you.

Intriguing...

As far as we know, she's limited to a spider and human form. Who knows? We can certainly try for it.

She can spin webs. Did it at the beginning, but haven't been using for a long time now.

No.

She doesn't have the skills to fluently speak, but can understand what others say and reply. We may be able to teach her.

Requesting Tsuchi to turn back into a human, her form becomes a black silhouette, molding into her human form again. The sudden weight on your head makes you fall behind you, collapsing on top of Tsuchi.

The air seems to lighten a bit after that. Getting back up, you re-wrap her in a blanket again, continuing to wait for Henry.

Tsuchi sits on your lap. You try to budge her gently, but she doesn't move.

Knock, knock

A person knocks on your door. Granting permission, it opens, Mary entering inside; her eyes going wide as she sees Tsuchi's new form.

"Henry told me to check on you, sweetie. At first I thought something happened to you, but he didn't tell me a girl was here. You both look really similar."

"Isn't that your spider?" she says, approaching Tsuchi for a better look. "She's awfully cute; You both seem to be siblings."

"We do? I mean, she's my familiar so I guess she'll look like me."

Henry comes back from the open door, a set of clothes in his hands; they're designed to closely resemble your own. You know, the churchly feel of Mary's and yours.

"Henry, where do you get all these clothes?" you queried.

"That's a secret, kid. Let's just say that I have an artist's hand along with the spare clothes inside the church. Specially crafted ," he boasts.

"Here, give them to me Henry," taking the attire out of his hands. "I'll get Tsuchi dressed since...she's in a human form. I hope you get what I mean, sweetie," Mary says, pulling the hand of your familiar. Leading her out of your room.

Hours pass. You and Henry have a conversation between each other. Talking about the basic topics like where you came from, how did you get here. Though, Henry did most of the talking while you listened. Apparently he got kicked out of priesthood because he tried to exorcise a dragon with saltwater.

...Why?

"Coming in, hope your ready, sweetie," the voice of Mary says as Tsuchi presents herself.

Much like your own, she's wearing a white longsleeved undershirt, shoes, gloves, and a black dress, resembling Mary's outfit in a way. She also has her own silver necklace, dangling around her neck as she moves towards you; taking her seat on your bed.

"You look like a pair of dolls, like Raggedy Ann and Andy," Mary compliments. "Oh, and also, the institute called for us; they want to tell us about another job. Apparently it's a bit of a special case," Turning to Henry.

"I don't know. They just told us to come for the job's details," Mary says.

You shrug, getting off the bed as Tsuchi follows you. Let's explore the church for a bit and help Tsuchi get used to being human; well, until she becomes a spider again.

"Kid, meet us at the front until your done," Henry told you before you exited the room.

Navigating the hallways you show Tsuchi how stuff works. She prances around the place like a child in a toy store; checking out the statues, playing with the kitchen appliances, explaining to her what the stained glass art meant (although you didn't know what they were supposed to mean yourself). In short, she was a handful.

You bring her to the church's library to see if you can touch up on her speech. As it is right now, she looks like she can only communicate with nods and shakes.

Presenting a dusty old book picked from a random shelf, you slowly pronounce the alphabet with some simple words to her. Tsuchi seems to get it; making attempts to mimic your speech. All in all, that's a good start for her.

Teaching and pronouncing basic words and phrases to Tsuchi, she seems to be getting better and better with every word she utters. It progresses to the point in which she's able to respond with yes or no, along with other common phrases.

"You're doing good," you congratulate her. "How about saying my name?"

"Y-Yes," Tsuchi nodded.

Breaking your last name into syllables, you slowly pronounce them to her. "A-ra-kai-yo."

"A-ra-kai-yo," she repeats.

"Great. My first name is Ku-mo. Try saying it together."

"A-Arakaiyou Kumu, Arakaiyou Kumo, Arakaiyo Kumo," Tsuchi chants, successfully saying your full name on her third try. "Tsuchi for Kumo, forever!"

Perking up, you grow bashful. "Y-Yeah...together," you nervously agree.

She then returns you with a hug, smiling a widely; looking closely her grin was full of cartoonishly sharp teeth. "Tsuchi for Kumo, Tsuchi only for Kumo, tehehe," she gleefully laughs.

Okay. That last part sounded alarming; nonetheless, it's pretty warm to see her happy.

"Uh...We need to meet at the front of the church, remember," reminding yourselves.

"Nnn, Tsuchi remembers," she says, letting you go.

Departing from the library, you walk to the front with Tsuchi following you; smiling along the way. There, you see Henry outside the car smoking with Mary already inside. Taking a seat in the passengers, Tsuchi sits next to you.

Snuffing how, his cigarette, Henry took his place in the drivers seat. "Took you a bit long. Somethin' happen, kid," he grinned.

You stay quiet, making Tsuchi talk instead to show her what you've taught.

"Kumo teach Tsuchi how to speak," she tells Henry.

"She just learned to talk already? That's pretty surprisin' since she didn't peep a word when she appeared, er, changed."

"Kumo is nice. Tsuchi loves Kumo," Tsuchi says, smiling her toothy grin again.

"He's a good, kid. Nice pair of chompers too," he said, starting to the car and driving.

Passing downtown, Tsuchi looks through the window, her eyes twinkling at the city life. The bustle of citizens traversing the pavement, the humming of many vehicles, and the tall building reaching into the sky; she was amazed.

Pulling into a parking lot, a tall building towers over; much like the surrounding ones. What differentiated it though, was that it was one of the taller ones, the color palette cleanly white, giving it a more...complicated you say for a lack of better term. To put it simply, it wasn't like the other buildings.

"This, kid, is the main Babel Institute building. All kinds of shenanigans go on about here. Scientific and magical experiments, training, and possible illegal stuff. Keyword possible," Henry informed you. "Not much of the populace knows about this stuff - say for other companies and corporations."

"Follow us, sweetie. Chances are that you might get lost since it's the first time around," Mary advised.

"It depends. If your asking that he's comparable to us then I'd say not really; on a different scale, he's as good as you, sweetie. Albeit more experienced," Mary assessed.

Holding his thought for a moment, Kagurou resumed, "There's a...certain highschooler that has recently caught our attention," showing a folder, full of a person's picture and description. "An influx of magic started appearing; at first we didn't know why, but our intel and observation teams managed to find this boy every time at the site of these influxes. And so, we inspected him closer, mainly at his school Fuutsuno High, where he showed the use of highly powerful magic when fighting a demon after class; additionally, he was accompanied with others. Luckily, they were able to subdue the demon before anything worse could happen."

"Okay. Then are we going to recruit him?" Henry says.

"No, we want your team to guard this student. Not only us, he also garnered the attention of another magic affiliated organization. An underground and dangerous one. We fear that they might try to misuse his potential," Kagurou furthered.

"How long is this going to be?" Mary asks.

Turning your attention to Kagurou again, you ask him a question, "Who's the highschooler?"

"Kajuma Daichi, a first year. Average test scores - one of the lowest actually, average physical ability, lazy personality; a overall normal looking student. He's the type of person who takes minimal effort to pass by," Kagurou says.

"Sounds like an easy person to guard," Henry remarks. "Do you have anything in store? Sure, we can just scout outside the school or his home, but that won't be very doable. We might even get ambushed while on watch."

Kagurou becomes silent, looking out of the window as if contemplating something. He then adjusting his glasses as its lens reflect off light. "Oh, I have a plan for you..." he ominously says, smirking as he chuckles a bit. "I devised a way to keep an eye on him whilst staying in close proximity."

Henry sighs, "Not this again..."

Confused, you and Tsuchi look to Mary who's staying awfully silent, holding a fake looking smile. Shen then leans down to whisper to you, "Chief Kagurou is a bit eccentric, sweetie. To give you an idea, he showed off his model collection during one of his meetings.Just be courteous for his sake okay?"

Daunted, you focus back on him; you don't really know what to think after what Mary told you, but it gives off a bad feeling.

"You see, I worked out an agreement with the headmaster of Fuutsuno. He's willing to take you in; Henry and Mary, you'll be teaching a mythology course. Henry acting as the teacher with Mary being an assistant teacher," one of Kagurou's lens is entirely engulfed in light (for some reason), only showing his right eye. Dramatically, he puts one foot on the desk, pointing at you and Tsuchi with his smirk becoming a huge grin. "And you two will be the perfect piece to this orchestration! You'll attend Fuutsuno High! "...Like what?" Henry skeptically says.

"Oh, there's a new volume at the bookstore. A matter between life and death for an avid admirer of Pink Stalk's works."

With a sigh, Henry pulls out of his chair, the rest of you doing so as well.

"Glad to meet you Arakaiyo, it was fun," Kagurou says, waving his hand.

Filling the elevator, its doors closes. A calm humming noise quietly resounding inside as it's dropping down to ground level.

"So what do you think about Chief Kagurou, sweetie?" Mary asks for your opinion.

" "He's so cool!" " you and Tsuchi say.

"Really? The guy's nuts," Henry voicing his own take.

"Well I'm glad you like Chief Kagurou, sweetie. Not many understands him due to his interest," Mary said gently with a smile. It almost sounded she pitied him; though that's a guess. .

"Said interest are weird; models of 2d women, novels, comics. He's manic," Henry said, a puzzled look on his face. Crossing his arms, he then gestures in a thinking motion, "Yes, his plans do work, but it's crazy most of the time."

"...Didn't you exorcise a dragon with saltwater?" you mutter.

"We didn't have any holy water. So I did the next best thing; I consecrated some water from the ocean and used it. Worked too," Henry proved.

"But you lost your priesthood because said water was corrupted. Thing could've been made worse," Mary doubted.

The elevator opens, the cool office air blowing by you. Henry and Mary continue to converse among themselves, talking about why Henry could've destroyed Italy as we progress back into the car.

Summarizing the new mission, you wonder about how it'll go, while Henry drives through the city streets; you and Tsuchi looking out of the window.

"Ara, ara. This'll be fun to watch." ???
"He has much potential, sister. I shall pray good fortune upon him." Vm'algoth
