Hey y'all. If you couldn't tell, this quest will be taking place in the well known DC Comics universe. Here there be gods and monsters, magicians and aliens, and even a clown or two. But bear in mind that due to various time travel related and or multiversal shenanigans, the DC world is ridiculously complex as a whole. So I'll be running a very streamlined version of it. And to be up front about it, it will likely be shaped by my own likes, dislikes, and biases.
Oh, and aforementioned shenanigans won't be making an appearance.
Mostly.

>The Rules
I will write up the life of our young hero Morgan Barrett, a high school student who has just truly begun his career as a superhero in Gotham City as Gray Ghost, you will be given prompts to direct him.
Some things will require a dice roll to determine success or failure or something else entirely. Write In's are absolutely encouraged but I reserve the right to torpedo anything.

The voting period will last 20 minutes after the prompts are given. I will then announce the voting closed and write up the chosen response.

>The Dice
We will be using 1d100 ninety percent of the time here. Best of three. We might use something else when applicable. I'll be running with a loose sort of degrees of success/failure thing here so no real DCs.

Let's have some fun.

The past couple days have passed you by in a bit of haze. Ever since you got home from the raid on the Church of Blood you've had a hell of a time getting to sleep. With your less than stellar condition, it was easy enough to convince mom to give you some breathing room from school.

It's not like there aren't things you wanna do but you're dragging your feet just to go to the kitchen and eat breakfast. Speaking of which, these pancakes have been silently judging you for the past few minutes and you're tired of it. Pushing away the half eaten meal, you stand up just in time for mom to hurry back into the room.

"Remember sweetie, you might want to try those meditation techniques. Might help you feel better, just saying, it's better than nothing." She diligently sprays water on a small series of plants she started growing when you moved here. They're starting to look pretty good. Some unusual colors in there.

"I remember, Dr.Powell's recommendations right? I might give it a shot. Or just hit the gym." You plop on the couch in the next room while mom flits about in her final preparations to get to work.

"Mhm, whatever you do, just try and get out of the house." She checks on her plants once more before heading for the door. "Morgan. I'm sure you've heard of that super criminal, Poison Ivy, right?"

Pssh, yeah. You've heard of her. "Yeah mom, pretty sure the super freaks around here are just as famous as Batman."

"I was just thinking about something I overheard yesterday. Apparently, she used to be an extremely capable botanist. If things were different, we might even have been colleagues."

You snort. "Sounds like a reality show. My super villain coworker. What brought this on?"

"Oh, well. I heard that she's been inactive on the news. They try to keep the locals up to date on what costumed criminal to watch out for. And I just got to thinking about how cruel life can be. Who knows? Maybe she and I were no different a several years ago. I'm sure she didn't dream of crafting man eating plants when she was studying to become an expert in her field."

You channel surf while barely even looking at the screen, just trying to find a distraction. "A bit early in the morning to get all philosophical. Dontcha think?"

"Just food for thought, Morgan. Have good day. Oh and don't mind the plants, they're a little side project of mine." She scurries out the front door, labcoat draped over one arm, like she does every morning. "And try to relax! You're too young to be stressed out!" She adds as she closes the door.

You practically deflate when you finally hear the sound of her cars engine starting and exiting earshot. The longer you do this the closer you feel to getting found out. Though as far as you can tell, mom has no idea what you do when you work weekend nights at Grant's Gym or stay over with friends overnight, or those extra long study sessions.

Which she wouldn't even buy if it weren't for your enrolling at GA. Dick and Babs do a great job of covering for you though. Even though Dick doesn't have a damn thing to hide from anyone in his life. Barbara said she lives with her dad but you've never met him.

You spent most of your first day off after the raid sleeping. So much so, that you slept through your alarm and mom let you stay home out of pity. Then you just kind of lazed around yesterday, forgoing your usual workouts and just plain ignoring any homework. And now, here you are again.

You toss the remote to the other end of the couch, frustrated. "Uggh! C'mon Barrett. This is just a rut. All you need to do is get the ball rollin' again and you'll be back to work in no time."

There's plenty you can do right now. Even if it's just meditating. Or hitting up the gym. There's also more serious matters. It's been too damn long without a break in Freeze's wife's case. Nora. You'll either have to ask Bruce directly about that or just take a quick peak at the files on the Batcomputer.

Then there's Killer Frost's stabilization to think about. You haven't had a chance to really look at the data yet but you might be able to figure something out. Or bring it to someone with a lot more knowledge than you have. You'll have to get to this eventually, a Leaguer asked you to help. And Frost seemed downright miserable.

You could also just head back to the tower, see how the team is doing. When you called in to report your mission with the League, Dinah showed up to talk with you and have a look at the girl the cult was fixated on. Raven, is her name. And she came to the conclusion that the tower would be the best place for her for now, given her powers and what she's been through. She agreed.

Your phone buzzes, and with a glance you see a text from Artemis. [Dinah's calling in the team for some "overdue procedures" you should probably get over here. You were probably ditching again today anyways]

Speak of the devil.

>Head to the batcave, and start investigating the Nora Fries case.
>Open up Frost's bio readings and get cracking.
>Go to the tower and get it over with, if Dinah is calling everyone in it's probably important anyways.
>Just hit the gym, you've gotta clear your head.

I feel like the Frost thing wouldn’t be terribly difficult to at least stabilize. There’s got to be at least a few heroes with an exceptionally high body heat as a byproduct of their powers that she could leech off of to keep from freezing to death until we find some sort of cure for her condition.
>>
>>2751054
Sighing, you drag yourself off the couch and take ten minutes or so to make yourself presentable. your walk to the teleporter is completely uneventful. Gotham is quiet during the day after all. One moment inside of the disguised teleporter, and your miles away in the blink of an eye. The tower is strangely quiet when you walk in. And you see why when you enter your little living room.

The titans are all sitting around on the large couch, in varying states of annoyed, or in Kaldur's case. unmoving stoicism. Dinah seemed to be explaining something before you walked in on them. "Morgan, it's good your here. I was just talking to your team about something important."

"Well, don't hold up the proceedings on my account. What's goin on?" You plop down next to Dick and you share a quick handshake as way of greeting.

Dinah takes a moment before continuing. Probably just choosing her words more carefully. "As I was explaining before you walked in, slap dash medical work is bound to lead to long term problems in this line of work. And just because you're young, it doesn't excuse you from that. So me and a couple other Leaguers came up with a physical eval for you all. But it's something a bit more comprehensive. It might help you learn something about yourself. Especially you, Morgan."

Now that get's you interested. "Like what?"

"Well, you're a metahuman. And metahuman abilities manifest in unique ways. The better you understand yourself, the better you could make use of your powers. For example, until I knew how my Canary Cry affected my vocal cords I had no idea that simple voice exercises could make it stronger, or give me more control. It should be educational."

Robin, raises a had, but doesn't wait to be called on or anything to start talking. "Is that all? Because I really didn't think you'd gather us like this just for a physical."

Dinah, shakes her head of platinum blonde hair, looking just a fair bit uneasy. "Well, no. You're right. I called you all together to talk about the other side of the evaluations. I'm thinking that the entire team could benefit from a counseling session or two with me. After hearing what sort of mission you took on the other night I think you should at least consider it."

Roy speaks up, scratching some stubble on his chin. "Meaning we don't have to do it?"

"True, no one is forcing you. This sort of thing tends to have the opposite of the desired effect when you force it on someone."

"Then you can count me out. No offense Dinah, but I don't need anyone trying to pick my brain."

Dinah sighs but relents without pressing the issue. "That's fine. You're all free to refuse. Just know that my proverbial door is always open and whatever we talk about stays between you and me."

You look around the couch to get a feel for your friends feelings on the subject. Artemis looks like she might just outright refuse like Roy. Dick and M'gann are surprisingly into the idea. Whereas Donna and Kaldur look like it wouldn't matter to them either way.

And you...

You're not wrong. She's fine for now but the real problem is that law enforcement is demanding she be turned over to them and they can't continue to help her if they do. Not to mention she'd be left to more unsavory individuals in that sphere. Like a certain handler of a certain Task Force.

We kinda let Blood die. But I dunno, since it was mosty a failed roll and we could not really outrun shotgun pellets.
Still, Morg was a bit shocked

>“Nah, I'm good on the shrink stuff. Had enough of that.”
There was the Blood thing I guess, but the only reason we didn’t save him was because we failed the roll. Otherwise I’d say we’re pretty stable, mentally. Maybe later, when we’ve got more recent traumatic baggage to deal with.

The idea of a little heart to heart with Dinah doesn't sound so bad. You've done this before. Not something you like to think about but you remember the days right after dad's death. "I guess it couldn't hurt. Long as it's confidential."

Dinah flashes a thumbs up. "Yep, I know how to keep a secret. So, Artemis, Donna, Kaldur'ahm? You seem on the fence."

They take stock of the rest of the team before responding, like you did. And all three of them nod in the affirmative. Artemis probably being the most tentative. "Dinah claps her hands, clearly glad to be done with the conversation. "Alright then kids, follow me. We need the equipment at the hall of justice, not to mention the brains."

With a low buzz of chatter, the group follows her into the teleporter, a boom tube opening up at place you've only seen the inside of once. Part of you wants to avoid seeing Killer Frost. Seeing how you haven't touched her data yet. She leads you through a few rooms holding equipment that you barely understand from a glance until you get where you're supposed to be.

There's a large machine, practically alone in the room. It mostly consists of a large circular arm that looks like it moves up and down. And some kind of large terminal attached. Donna knocks the back of her fist on it, making an echoing metallic sound. "This little number was built by The Atom. He's not a public member yet but Dick, I believe you've had the pleasure."

He nudges you. "Helped out Bats and me on a particularly weird missing persons case."

"Atom built this thing to scan you to the atomic level. It should be able to tell us if there's just about anything wrong or unusual about your physical state. Morgan, this is how we got such comprehensive data on Frost. But think of this like a doctors visit. You don't have to share your results."

Damn. This thing is downright powerful then. Without much fanfare, everyone loses any metal objects on their person and takes turns standing in the circular arm while it scans. Those of you with an unusual physiology go first. So that means M'gann and you first. Since Amazons and Atlanteans are more of a known quantity than Martians and metahumans.

>It's pretty lame to say "you're just a metahuman"

I've seen a couple players say this before in past threads and I honestly don't know what to say to it. It's labeled Metahuman Quest. I told you what you were from the start. And if that's not special enough for you I dunno what to say. You're already in the upper echelons of power levels for Metas.

With that being said, if you're talking about the mechanics of how your powers work. That's precisely what I was planning on elaborating with this part of the story. And I apologize if that seemed a bit salty. I mean, my feelings on this kind of thing are basically this. It's cape shit. Don't be surprised if the science of something is hand waved with some big words or a joke. It's genre appropriate.

That’d be a good way to update. Like you said, /qst/ is slow enough that you can go a few days without posting anything and the thread would remain up, so better to just update when you can then try to cram everything into weekly sessions that are harder to find the time for.

I'm starting to think that should just be the way I run. It could promote longer threads and more discussion. Which are both things I want. The eight hour session is starting to begin more and more like a gauntlet and one of the golden rules of QMing is to not fucking do anything you're not enjoying.

>>2754639
Don't blame you at all, Cass is a real cutie.

Also, want all your opinions on this. I've heard all you anons saying you want time away from the Titans and I hear you. You want some space to build your own legacy. So how about the rest of you. A little less titans?
>>
>>2754653
I'm all for doing our own thing for a bit, or at least on the side. In character, making a name for ourselves would be cool and out of character I think there's a lot more interesting stuff in the DC universe than just the Titans and the JL that could be cool to explore.
>>
>>2754653
Yeah, I’m feeling becoming more independent. We should all still collaborate when facing threats that any one or two of us couldn’t handle alone of course, like the League does, but I think it’s about time we started doing our own hero things, separate of the TTs. If we’re going to eventually become the new generation of League members, we’re going to need to develop a degree of autonomy from one another.
>>
>>2754653
I like the Titans. I'm cool with staying.

As she enters the machine, the arm begins to slide up and down. Performing a full scan. As M'gann waits impatiently for it to indicate she can move again, Dinah inputs something into the machine's terminal every now and again. Probably just directing the scan somehow.

Of course, M'gann has no qualms sharing her results and Dinah helps her interpret the data. "So, our scan are showing pretty normal stuff for a Martian. Your molecular make up is what Atom would call "soft". Meaning it's malleable. But that's how Martians shapeshift and change their density. But something unusual here is your brain activity. We've got aigna here that are indicative of a powerful psychic. You've got similar readings to your uncle. And since you're still growing, your brain power will be nothing to sneeze at."

M'gann practically squeals over the assessment of her powers. You've only been on one mission with her and you know she's strong. But to outstrip Manhunter? Got a real monster in your ranks. Dinah invites you to step up and you stand inside the machine. As it ascends and descends you start to get a little bored, you're spending much longer in here than M'gann.

When the damn thing is finally through, Dinah quickly and quietly ushers you to the next room to talk. "Thought you might want a little privacy to decide after I give you the results. Those Martians really are open books huh?"

"Heh, you'd be too if everyone you've ever known could read your mind. So what's my grade? Does that thing determine weight too because I've been trying to pack on a little more muscle and..."

"In a minute." Dinah gently cuts in the middle of your sentence. "First off, there's some unusual things in this data. First off your brain activity. It's got an unusual frequency and it doesn't line up with anything else we have on record. Your definitely not psychic so it's hard to tell what this means. But you shouldn't worry about that. Then there's the other thing. I'll just start by saying we have several metahuman's metagene data samples on hand here and they all match in a superficial way. They lie dormant and activate. But yours, yours is like it was always this way. Like your powers were always there. The there's your DNA sequence. It's certainly human but it's- it's strange."

You're getting a little impatient. "C'mon Dinah, don't beat around the bush. It's not like you."

She takes a deep breath and fixes you with an even stare. Like she's the bearer of bad news. "The metagene is only a small part of the human genome. Your DNA sequence, while totally human, seems like it was built from the ground up with the meta gene as a crucial part of it. We have enough metahuman data on file to tell that this is very unusual. I don't know Morgan, I'm not a geneticist but this isn't something you can shrug off."

>"Wait, Dinah. Why're lookin at me like my dog just died? What does this mean?"

She's throwing too much at you at once. All this about your metagene, the human genome. "Wait, Dinah. Why're lookin at me like my dog just died? What does this mean? Is there something wrong with me?"

"No! Well- I don't know. Honestly Morgan I don't know. I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to show this to some of the League's scientists."

"You're avoidin' the question Dinah. Is there something wrong with me?" Your heart is beating faster in your chest, fists tightening unconsciously.

She sighs. "I told you Morgan I don't know. Just because we've never seen it before, doesn't make it a bad thing. But you also shouldn't just brush this off. It could mean your powers are unstable. Or even that they'll keep growing. We can't know yet. For now, it's business as usual. Whether you share this with your team is up to you."

"So that's it? Just put it outta my head?"

"At the moment? Yes. You've been putting a lot of work in with the Titans lately. Why don't you take some time to relax. Or just do some solo work. That works pretty well for me when I need to clear my head." She lays a hand on your shoulder, causing you to jolt slightly. "Just- just don't worry about it. Helping people is what we do, so if you need help. You couldn't be in better hands."

You just nod. You can't really find it in you to say anything else on the matter.

"Now, how about some better news? I think this could help you understand your powers a bit more." She thumbs through the data on a tablet and brings up something for you to look at. Seems like a break down of your physical makeup.

"Remember how I said M'gann's molecular structure is 'soft'? Well, in comparison yours is more like a liquid."

"What's that sposed to mean?"

"I'm saying that your molecular structure just kind of does whatever the hell it wants. Atom could probably give you a more detailed explanation but it seems like your powers mean you control your body at a molecular level. At least, somewhat consciously. Try to think outside the box, I'm sure you'll find a new way to use it."

All of the lesser details of your little checkup just kind of flow into one ear and out of the other. Needless to say, you're a bit preoccupied. Dinah let's you go as soon as she realizes. Saying to come by the Gym if you want to talk. You'll end up there regardless so you just get going.

You give a half hearted goodbye to your friends, they notice you're a bit down but thankfully don't bother you about it. M'gann looks like she's about to say something but Dick stops her. Dammit, she can probably feel what's going on in your head right now. You've gotta get outta here. Doesn't matter where.

With the power of the Justice League tech you're hundreds of miles away in a couple minutes. Back on the streets of Gotham, walking nowhere in particular. You don't care what, you need something to do. Anything really. With Dinah's little check up out of the way you've got free reign for now.

And your to do list hasn't really gotten any smaller. But you could just find a way to blow off steam.

>Time to hit the gym. You just need some time. Like Dinah said.

Can't we already ghost walk, more or less?

So we have three points now. Should we buy <Ghost Walk> ? Although <Fist in The Dark> is pretty cool too.
>>

Yeah no shit I should've specified. You can't hold that form for long at all. think of it as a trump card. A Super, if you will. And once you use it once you'll need a rest before you can put your body through that again. I'll make sure and change the pastebin to reflect this later. Thanks for pointing it out.

I'm torn between getting fist in the dark or saving for shadow armor.
>>
>>2756559
Yes and no, think of it as a super dodge. Its moreso to help you escape sticky situations and avoid hazards/attacks you're vulnerable to.

For me, dust wave's low cost and utility makes it a no brainer. It's a brand new skill that isn't just a slightly better version of something we can already do.

I think fist in the dark would be great in a package with the clone skill, we could essentially become shadow version Billy Numerous... but Shadow armor is also very tempting and it's cheaper, and i don't think many people would join me in the clones+fist package

Better get something done.

We have 3 points, right? I say bank them to wait for Shadow Armor, it gives us a Bruiser option and we can be an effective humanoid shield.

Eh, I’d be alright with grabbing Fist in the Dark now and saving up for Smoke and Mirrors. Shadow Armour’s useful, and we should definitely grab it later, but we’ve already got a lesser version of it. Better to unlock abilities we don’t have first, then add upgrades to what we’ve already got.

I'm torn.
I really want the utility Phantom Sleight gives, but Shadow Armor would let us punch comically far above our weight class, literally.
Fuck it.
BANK IT!
>>
Shadow Armor is gonna be a one and done unless we upgrade it further. I say we at least get a defense option before doing that. Ghost Walk would be good.
>>
After thinking on it, I'll vote to bank it for Shadow Armor.
>>
>>2756958
But it's armor anon. That is a defensive option, maybe THE defensive option.
>>
>>2756972
Fair enough but it we'll only be able to use it once, then have to rest to use it again. On one hand it's gonna be a game changer and turn a potential bad situation to our favor. On the other hand, Ghost Walk is always available to us.

After spending some time just walking in the cool Gotham air, you've come to a decision. You may not be feeling to right yourself. But you know what feels right. Helping someone else. And this might've always been closer to home than you realized. Granted, your metagene isn't forcing you to kill people.

Maybe helping Killer Frost will set your head straight too? You were going to anyway, but looks like this was just the kick in the ass you needed to get started. But first, you need something. Something vital for any sort of work like this. The heart of it, really.

----

Sliding the pizzabox onto the coffee table, you pop it open and dig into a nice wide slice before sliding the data tablet you swiped from the Tower onto the table as well. When you turn it on, it goes into a holographic display. Showing you a 3D interpretation of Frost's DNA.

Dinah wasn't kidding, the metagene is a small part. Almost insignificant. But look at what it can do. You'll consider yourself lucky if you don't wind up with problem's like Frost's. Or worse. But it's time to put all of that stuff outta your head for now. You've got one hell of a problem in front of you.

As you start to pour over the details. There's an increasing amount of things that fly over your head, so you crack open one of the bricks from the Academy. Biology to be exact. They don't baby you in GA courses, these are college level books so you glean what you can but this kind of slapdash research can only take you so far.

The question is, will it be far enough?

I just hope we can take some actions to prevent the stupid "Nora is better but Victor still does the supervillain thing because comics are welded to their status quo and we refuse to let such a cool villain simply become a remorseful man quietly serving a prison sentence that he believes himself to deserve" thing.
>>

>>

You've hit a wall. Plain and simple. Chewing down one last bite of crust you spin around the hologram, searching for something. Anything you may have missed. But you've been staring at this thing for hours now. Mom's about to be home and you're just about out of options here.

But you've made some decent headway. After combing through everything, you've got a theory going. As far as science goes regarding metas, two things are known and have been proven. Meta powers are unique to the individual, and they manifest under stress. Whether it be physical or mental.

Frost's data included a report from Martian Manhunter about how she came to be Killer Frost. She used to be Caitlin Snow, young scientist on the rise of a budding career in Central City's STAR Labs of all places. She decided to go big on a project that was supposed to guarantee her a position there and was caught in an explosion involving a perpetual motion machine.

The resulting explosion created the conditions needed for her metagene to activate. But here's where your theory begins. Out of all of the documented cases of the metagene, going back to Ted's days in the hero business. No meta was changed in this way. Never damaged their body like this. Her cells look as though they're expanding like they do when the water inside them freezes and ruptures.

But then they shrink again. They look like they're breathing. Your theory, is that Killer Frost is stuck in some kind of permanent Fight or Flight state. Currently, the switch is taped down to the Fight side. Her body is constantly on overdrive. It'd be like if Dinah couldn't speak a word without bursting eardrums or breaking every piece glass within a country mile.

Or if you... If you couldn't keep your molecules together. Like when you first found dad. It'd be like you were never really here. So if you could figure out how to flip her switch- you really should find a new metaphor when you voice this to any other living person- she should go back to normal. Well, normal for a meta.

You nearly jump out of your seat when you hear the sound of mom entering through the front door, followed by her usual "I'm home!~" In a sing-song tone. You scramble to hide the Justice League technology sitting on your coffee table and shove it in your backpack after shutting it off.

Mom walks in and halts abruptly, cutting her steps and greeting short. And you follow her eyes to your pizza box. "Ramone's? Morgan. Tell me you saved your poor mother a slice."

You saw this coming. Flipping the box around, you flip the lid open. "Saved you half, actually."

"Yes!" She pumps her fist and tosses her labcoat and bag on the couch before she scoops up the box and practically floats into the kitchen. "And here I was thinking of starting a workout routine after work. Hah! That's no way to live. What're you up to Morgan?"

"Oh you know, catching up on homework." Despite the progress you've made. You won't be getting anywhere without help. Maybe someone with more knowledge than you can use your little theory as a springboard? But who? You've gotta know someone.

You give it plenty of thought. Lots of thought really. You consider a few choices regarding who you could go to for help. Even mom is on that list. But the thought of trying to tell a messy lie about this being some overly complicated homework problem repulses you from that particular solution.

After a while it seems like your only real option is to get a hold of Bruce and borrow his brain. But thinking about the Batman gives you an idea. One you hope isn't crazy. Mister Freeze is sitting in a jail cell in Arkham. Probably not doing much of anything aside from worrying about his wife. You still remember how he looked after he battled Batman that night.

Dealing with a potential plague of Batmen made you ready to fight pretty much anyone. But he just looked so... pathetic? That's not the right word. Vulnerable? You didn't see the cold blooded killer that the news and various cape websites warned you about. You saw a guy that was willing to do pretty much anything because he was so scared for his wife.

And he's probably the best expert in the world in cryogenics. Not exactly the same as genetics but that might be exactly what this problem needs. If your theory hit the mark then it's possible that you just need to think outside the box. With a plan of action in mind, you spend the rest of the evening watching a cheap movie with mom and pretending to hit the sack before she does.

When you can hear her snoring from the next room as you step into the hall, you take it as your cue to get going. Throwing on your costume is faster than ever now. You're so used to it now that it barely takes you five minutes to get into it. You pull up your mask and check on mom one more time before dispersing and flowing out through the crack of your windowsill.

Reforming in your ultra light state, you fire your grapnel, which launches with a mechanical whisper. And launch yourself high into the air by hooking onto the streetlamp nearest your home. Flying into yet another night in Gotham. The sound of sirens blazing in the distance. A gunshot echoes out, far from your neighborhood. Yep. Gotham after dark.

----

Alfred shows you in without any fuss and even offers you some dinner. You decline but only because you'd prefer to get to work as soon as possible. You can add five star chef to the list of whatever the hell the butler did before looking after Bruce. The fact that Bruce lets these go cold night after night is a disgrace.

Bruce is exactly where you hoped he'd be. Sitting at the Batcomputer, cowl down and working fervently on whatever case he's got tonight. He regards you with the same even cool look that you've ever seen on his face and nods. "Morgan. Do you need something? Robin is out at the moment but-"

"Good. Need your help on somethin'. I assume you know the situation with Killer Frost back at the Hall of Justice."

He barely takes a moment to adjust. "Yes. I haven't had time to review her case."

"I have. And I have an idea on how to solve the problem but we need a little outside help. And I was hoping you'd open that door. You in?"

Bruce just looks at you for a moment, his hands steepled under his chin like he does when he's deep in thought. "Show me your work."

Okay, you didn't think it'd be this easy. After a call ahead, and a short ride in the Batmobile, you arrive at Arkham Asylum. You do not like it here. The grounds look positively ancient. Iron bars tipped with what might as well be spears, blunted with time, line the property. Thick overgrowth covers the sides of building and creeps over a largely ignored parking lot.

It started raining on your way over here. Now it's pouring, lightning and thunder flashing and roaring in the sky above the place. The grotesque gargoyles perched on every corner vomiting rainwater. You haven't even made it inside yet and there is something that just doesn't sit right with you about this place. "Batman. This... is it always like this?"

"Yes." Is all he gives you as you both stroll up to the outer security checkpoint. Though one far away from the front doors of the asylum. Thankful for your hood, you hurry after him. Not really wanting to spend a moment alone in this fucking place.

Batman is waved through checkpoints like he owns the place with staff member you pass looking at him with respect, grudging acceptance, or something approaching fear. After passing a map pinned to a wall you notice that you're making a beeline to the maximum security zone of Arkham.

You make it there without anyone even trying to stop you. And Batman leads you to a huge room. You've never thought about the measures that need to be taken when keeping super powered prisoners in check. But this is something else. Giant clamps built into the walls grasp what are essentially steel boxes that the most dangerous prisoners sit in. The clamps keep them raised up at a lethal height.

Batman strolls over to what appears to be a control console, and interacts with it with his gauntlet. With a loud rumbling, one of the clamps descends, bringing down a box covered with a thick layer of frost and icicles. When it's finally brought down to ground level. You see Freeze in the clouded see through portion of his walls.

Sitting without his suit, you can see his blue skin and bloodshot eyes. There's some sort of intravenous system built into his body. They've given him just enough to stay alive. And nothing more. "Fries." Batman says.

"Batman." He replies. Couple of chatty cathies here. Better watch how you approach this.

>"I'm gonna cut straight to the chase here. We need your help, or someone could die, or worse."

If your chat with Frost taught you anything about questioning super villains, it's that you absolutely catch more flys with honey. "Look, Doctor Fries. we may be the last people you wanna see right now, but we need your help. Your knowledge could save someone's life."

He looks at you through red, cold eyes. But they light up ever so slightly at the mention of his wife. "And what, pray tell, does your little errand have to do with my Nora? I will not appreciate it if you are wasting time here in this cage."

Batman speaks up now, not speaking over you. But for you. "It's concerning a particular metahuman. Her condition is only deteriorating. And the method she's been using to keep herself stable until now are unacceptable. Grey Ghost believes your expertise may be the key to reversing her affliction."

Fries simply turns his burning cold gaze back to you, waiting for you to elaborate. You explain your theory. Leaving nothing out while pointing out all of the data with a projection from Batman's gauntlet. Fries takes it all in silently. But you can tell at the very least his interests are piqued.

When you've said your piece. Fries is standing now, looking over the data with a keen, critical eye. He's caught on to something. You know he has. You're not sure what else you could say. Promise him you'd find Nora? Batman already did that. And that was over a month ago. You don't like making promises you can't keep.

"Victor." Batman starts. "This wasn't the only reason we've come. I've made progress in locating your wife. Sionis thinks he hides every single one of his dealings from prison. He's wrong. I got the right man talking. And now I have a probable location."

There it is again, a shine in his eyes when he thinks about her. "You've found her? You must retrieve her Batman, you must."

"I will Victor. You know I will." The way he says things like that. You believe him.

Turning your attention back to Fries. You know you've gotta seal the deal. "Doctor, I know you've got your wife to worry about. But we're on her case. And, I'd heard that you started this to save Nora's life right? It only seems right to use that to help someone if you can, doesn't it?"

He doesn't answer, and for a moment you think you might've overstepped mentioning Nora like that. "Leave the data with the staff, Batman. The extent of the work I can do is limited but I will apply my cryogenics knowledge to your conundrum."

"Thank you, Doctor Fries. And we'll get her back. I promise. I already threw a wrench in Sionis' operation before. What's one more?" Batman gives him a silent thank you by way of a nod and leads the both of you back out of Arkham, dropping off the data with a staff scientist. When you're back in the Batmobile you feel like you can finally release a breath you were holding.

>"So, we hitting Black Mask's secret lair tonight or what?"
>"When did you learn where they stashed Nora?"
>"Drop me off at the location of Black Mask's little hidey hole. I keep my promises."
>"So where's Robin? Would've gotten a call if it was Titan work."
>"Write-In?"

You cast a bit of a suspicious gaze over at Batman in the driver's seat. You wonder how you've only just heard about this whole thing with Nora just now. "When did you learn where they stashed Nora?"

Batman of course, doesn't skip a beat. Doesn't even glance your way as he responds. "Not too long ago. I discovered a lead after I returned from a League mission. You didn't notice, but I haven't been in Gotham for a week."

Okay, you weren't expecting that. "Where the hell'd you go then?"

"Off world. The details are complicated." He brushes you off expertly. Though you can't say your not curious about the off world bit.

"Okaaaay. So where's Robin? Would've gotten a call if it was Titan work." You check the settings on you goggles to calibrate for night vision just in case you're in the dark.

"He's eliminating potential holding locations for Nora. He began at sundown. Hopefully, he's narrowed down the list." Bats pulls over and the cockpit like door releases with a mechanical hiss. You don't recognize the area immediately, but the signs tell you loud and clear that you're at the old steel mill.

"Didn't exactly tell Fries the truth." You point out while scanning the area for hostile forces. Y'know, the usual thugs.

"I told him what he needed to hear. And it wasn't a lie, here we are. Now, let's get to work. I'll be elsewhere, contact me or Robin the moment you need backup." You turn to tell him what you think of his technicalities but you're cut off by the engines of the Batmobile. And he's gone. Typical. You grapple on up to the nearest ledge and disperse. Worming your way into the neglected building.

Once inside you make yourself comfortable on the old rafter, which creek slightly even with your reduced weight. With a quick survey of the inside, the ground floor is crowded with piles of illegal goods. Which are being patrolled and protected by various degrees of thug, goon, and lackey.

What catches your attention though, is something up on the catwalk, or someone rather. Firefly. You almost didn't recognize with his helmet off, resting on a nearby desk. The pyromaniac is enjoying a smoke from his high perch and watching the goings-on down below him with limited interest.

Boy, Garfield is not a looker. Sprawling burns cover his face, head and hands in patches. Making him look more like a zombie than a burn victim. An incessant beep sounds out from his wrist computer, some kind of alert maybe? When he notices, he quickly puts out his cig on his bare hand. You stifle a disgusted cry as his face twists in pleasure for just a moment before he answers.

"Yeah? Alright, I'll buss in you in." With the short exchange through. He enters something on his wrist computer and slams his fist on a large button. It looks like it was connected to some heavy machinery back in the day. Seconds later, the suspiciously empty center of the ground floor splits open, slowly revealing a large underground freight elevator.

A large armored vehicle is hauled up from the depths, with several much more well armed men hanging off of the sides. And at the helm, another man decked out with high tech custom weaponry like Firefly. There's something about this clown that seems familiar. You just can't-

You flinch as the new guy jumps up to the catwalk using jumpjets and wings in his suit. He saunters up to Firefly and they share a handshake only friends would pull off like that. "Killer Moth. Welcome back to the land of the living."

Shit.

The dumb villain yucks it up as he leans on what you assume to be some kind of acid cannon. "Good to be back too! Those HIVE freaks live in octagon shaped cubicles. And I thought Joker was dedicated to his theme."

Son of a bitch.

Boy I was kinda hoping for this version of Firefly
>>

That's actually my favorite version of him! But I dunno, he feels like he belongs to that TV show. I didn't feel right so I just stuck with the pyromaniac.

Can't believe I didn't like that show when I was a kid.

I dunno about other Anons, but I think we might need to call some back-up to be on standby while we try to sneak further in.

Same
>Can't believe I didn't like that show when I was a kid.
and same

I never really appreciated it when it was on but after going back to it years later it had some really cool and unique takes on Batman and his rogues gallery. I had the same problem with Brave and the Bold which is probably even worse considering how great that show was

>it had some really cool and unique takes on Batman and his rogues gallery

My stand out designs were Firefly and Bane. Functionally the same. But that new coat of paint made them seem so much more interesting.

And then the less drastic ones like Killer Croc being some fast talking southern mob boss. Or Penguin actually being able to put up a fight? Fun stuff.

>Or Penguin actually being able to put up a fight?
Everyone in that show knew kung-fu, I mean they pretty much made Joker a physical match for Batman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpAX-5UNQ24
