I have a Discord, it is for answering questions and telling you guys when I'm running: https://discord.gg/uWAmQGn

Ain't that a Kick In the Head
begin

The West isn't like civilised lands, it doesn't care what folk think is possible or not. All the great empires like England and Germany, all the governors and gentlemen who live on the coasts. They sent their scientists and investigators to figure it out. They sent armies to pacify her and tried to set up cities. It don't work. Never.

The West doesn't like cities.

See I could tell you about a dozen stories about the crazy uh... crap that goes on out in the deserts and badlands and that'd just be the stuff that I actually was there for, I heard of so much more. I heard about a guy who could run so fast ya couldn't even see him do it, faster than horses. The mad inventor who built himself a wife. Because it's not just the lands that are crazy out there, but the people too.

You wanna hear a story about a girl? A cool one? Well yeah I know a few.
Tend not to have happy endings though, those can be pretty hard to come by. Hell, even this one has a pretty sad beginning. The end? It's kind of sad too, but sad in a good way.

A long time ago in the Old West, there was a girl named Bethany, whose family were ranchers out in the desert, they looked after buffalo's and bison, they even had pigs and chickens. Doing pretty well for themselves they were...

You wake up on the Monday morning to the always pleasant sounds of buffalo doing that obscenely loud roar that they sometimes just do for no reason. You check outside and it's still dark but hey, never too early to get up and do chores right?

You groan and pull yourself up out of bed, stretching and yawning loudly as you start to get your clothes on.

What are you going to wear exactly?
A white dress, you might as well. It's light, breezy and easy to move around in. Sensible shoes under it though, you'll have work to do when the others wake up.
Pants, shirt and a waistcoat. Your brothers might make fun of you for being unwomanly sometimes and to be fair it's a pretty accurate assessment, still you'd prefer they kept teasing to a minimum.
>Another reasonable suggestion

Wew lad. We must be more Harley-cute than Joker-handsome this timeline.

Going with

But also
>a nice wide hat to keep off sun, and that bright orange hair ribbon we like so much

Because so far each Barnaby in every timeline has a color scheme.
Manic!Barnaby is Green and Purple (thanks doc) just like the Joker we know and love.
VoidKnight!Barnaby is Black (like the void) and Green (because when you stare at the abyss, a pair of bright green eyes stares back at you).
Ripper!Barnaby is Red (like the meat we cut up at both our jobs) and Dark Blue (Ripper outfit plus nighttime stealth). Also fits the dual personality theme.

So why not go with White and Orange for this time around?

I was thinking of another quest that briefly ran a month or two back. I think Many Guns Quest or Destiny Guns Quest. It had Guns in the name. A sapient gun (I think Tiatus) wielded by a girl named Bethany to kill a couple of bandits who occupied her house and shot her mother. I don't remember Bethany's last name, but it either wasn't given or was similar to Campbell.

You take out your favourite dress, that's not exactly saying much because you only actually have the one and all your other clothes are hand me downs from Pa. Being six foot two may mean that you have free reign to take the piss out of your brothers, but it also makes finding suitable clothes very difficult. Normally Ma would give you her old stuff, but she suffers from being both a foot shorter than you and less gifted in certain other areas.

There's only so much you can let out a dress before it becomes a top.

You take a long look in the mirror after dressing, admiring the way it frames you. A large floppy orange hat completes the ensemble and you move to get your hair done. That's the real tricky part. Your Pa keeps suggesting you cut it, and you can see why but long hair feels so nice. Your hair is your pride and joy, blonde strands that go down past your shoulders and frame your face like a lion's mane.

Or at least you think so, you've never actually seen a lion. Apart from mountain lions, but they don't have manes. At least not the ones you've seen. It's a shame really, everyone keeps talking about how great lions are in books but they're only in Africa. You reckon upon further thought that it's probably a scam by the British, who just want reasons to invade everywhere. Why else would they make such a big deal out o-

"Daydreaming again.. Damn girl, wake up."

You shake your head and stand up before heading to the door, you probably ought to see if the others are up. Or maybe you could get breakfast done early? It's supposed to be Pa's turn today, but he's been pretty out of sorts for a while now.

Make breakfast, it'd be a nice way to wake up the family.
Go check the others, maybe you're not the only one up this early.
Go wake up your brothers, if you're going to have to suffer through another hour in the day, so do they.

You're just tryin' to mindgame me into makin' you breakfast! your age getting you down old man?
Ah have no Idea what you're talkin' about sweetpea, now let me get on with the story.

You start up the stove and start frying up some rashers, eggs and beans. You've got to go grab some eggs from the chicken coop but whatever, it ain't that difficult, you even manage to not get any chicken shit on your dress. It's not long before your brothers stumble out of bed, lured by the sweet aroma of frying pig. The two of them sit down blearily and immediately begin fighting over the crunchiest bits.

Barnaby's the older one, and your twin brother. He's tall and blonde like you, but skinny as a rake. Always joking that one. Then there's Mike, he's a good three years younger and takes more after your mother with softer rounder features.

Turns out Pa was outside, as he comes back in through the front door. He sees you lot look up as he comes in and drawl wearily. "I woke up early, went for a walk to clear my head."

He sits and takes one of the eggs you boiled instead of frying, he did always prefer 'em boiled.

"You didn't have to do this Beth, it was mah turn."

"I thought I oughta, you're the one out herding anyways. God knows you need as little think about as possible eh ol' man."

You laugh and slide a few more slices of bacon onto his plate as you walk past, smiling as you see him crack a grin of his own and dig in.

Ma's the last one out, and shoos you away from the stove with a kiss on the cheek. "I got this darling, you just dig in."

You do as you're told and grab a bite to eat, stealing a fried egg off Barn when he isn't looking. Breakfast goes well, and it's not long before you're all stood up and waiting for the plan. Pa thinks for a moment, smoking a cigar as he turns to the three of you.

"Right, so we've got a good bit of work needs doing today. We need to sell those two pigs in town, move the bison into the new field, collect up the eggs and just generally maintain the ranch. Liz'll take care of the chickens and we can clean up around the place later, so it's the bison and the pigs that need taking care of."

He looks at you for a second, notices your dress and makes a decision.

"You ain't ruinin' that by spending the day chasing bison about, not after last time. Beth can sell the pigs, have a day on the town, just get back before sundown. Uh..."

Barn, you go with her.
Mike, you go with her.

"Barn, you go with her and please keep her out of trouble? We don't need a repeat of "The saloon incident".

Barnaby gives a smile and nods as Pa continues.

"Mike, you come with me. We'll take care of the bison."
The family splits up after that, all preparing to get their respective jobs done. You and Barnaby head outside to get the wagon ready and get the pigs into the back.

"So Beth, what's with the fancy dress all of a sudden. someone caught your eye?"

"Nah, I just thought it'd be cooler than pants. I don't see how you can wear all that in this heat. I'd also rather not be taking breaks to drink every five minutes it's..."
You finish hurling a metal strongbox into the back of the cart.
"It's unladylike."
Barn just gives you a look at that.

"Shut up."

"I didn't say anything..."

Then the two of you turn to the pig pen.

You and Barnaby herd and wrestle the two pigs you're selling for about ten minutes or so before you can actually get them into the back of the wagon. Normally it would be rather easy, but you're trying to avoid getting filth on your dress, so affairs are complicated somewhat by just how filthy pigs are.

With pigs and money safely secured the two of you wave goodbye to the others and head off. It's a good two hours into Brockton and there isn't much to see on the way in, so you settle down for the journey.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1szsOiZulUM

Barnaby drives the wagon through fields and over hills. There are a few other ranches out here too, and you occasionally spot other people in the distance, most folk are pretty careful though. No one comes too close, there's been tales of highwaymen and cattle rustlers in the area.

In the end however you get into town without any issues, Brockton Springs is the largest town in the region, home to almost three hundred souls. The only reason it's anywhere near this big is due to the mining camps nearby needing a place to drink and store money. But now it's a big trading spot as well.

Obviously, otherwise you wouldn't be coming here.

Your best bet to sell the pigs would either be selling them to Dan, who runs a butchery or Waiting on the street to sell them live. Farmers and all sorts come through fairly frequently.

Try to sell it live to somebody. Lower chance, more money.

You take the reigns from Barnaby, being much more familiar with this part of town and lead the wagon towards the town's central plaza. If you're going to sell animals, you might as well do it where people specifically go to buy and sell things. It also helps if people come up to you rather than you going to them, you can look desperate otherwise and that attracts thieves and scammers.

An hour or two passes once you've set up the wagon and got the pigs unloaded. There are actually quite a few interested parties, so many actually that you are able to hold an impromptu auction.

"I'll take the big one for thirty dollars!"

"Thirty five! over here!"

When all is said and done, you count up eighty dollars as you pass the two boars to their new owners and chuckle happily. Most of it'll go to fuel and supplies but still, you feel rather accomplished in how much you've managed to earn with a day's work. Even if most of that day was spent stopping farmers from drawing pistols on each other over a goddamn pig.
Hey, random gunfights at noon over trivial things are a proud Brockton tradition.

It's two in the afternoon by the time you're done with the auction, and your money is well protected in your wagon. You could head home or you could enjoy the city a bit more. Barnaby's taking great lengths to keep you away from the saloon considering what happened last time though.

I have some money of my own. Point me at the alcohol!
Nah, I ought to head home.

Yeah, like that one store owned by Six Strings alternate universe String Theory. Some rich lady kicked out of her east coast posh family house, she can make anything with timers on them. No one has enough money to buy anything she makes, and she scares people off with that smile of hers - that rumor she was a crazy outlaw doesn't help. People still drop by to look at her stuff, and she's okay with that.
Literally one of the most underutilized Worm characters that only had a big role in the last arc or two.

Given Barn's nervous disposition you decide that getting into a drunken barfight might not be the best use of your time today. Instead you decide to go for a walk around the city, see if you can find anything interesting. Barnaby stays with the wagon, it's safe enough. There are actual police here with uniforms and everything.

And so you wander, seeing the sights and sounds of the city. There's an artist who's doing face paintings on one street corner that move when they're on your face. There's a hunter selling pelts from various beasts that you don't recognise.(With very large bulletholes in) And all sorts of other strange sights. One man is trying to sell some cure-all tonic from the back of an old wagon. Nine times out of ten those are bullshit and judging from the very angry bald man stalking towards him, you have an idea which it is.

Only passingly interested in these, you keep walking past the market, and find yourself happening across two suited men arguing about something. Most of it goes a bit over your head, but you get some of it.

The first one is incredibly handsome, all jawbone and slicked back hair with a voice that ought to be singing in a fancy opera house.
I'm just saying, you can't expect me to do this myself! It'd be a waste of my time and there are more important things on my plate.

No, there aren't. This isn't something you can just pawn off on one of your servants, we need to find them and get my gun back soon or they'll make trouble. And trouble is the last thing you or I need partner.
The other man is tall and pale, almost gaunt looking and he delivers his statement with a bored monotone.
This ain't a negotiation, you owe me. And unlike you I'm incapable of getting it back, so forgive me if I find myself somewhat dismayed.

Then the handsome one tilts his head in your direction.
What about using one of them? less risky for sure.

Less likely to succeed, and I'd rather be assured.

They took your gun, nothings assured now is it? Not even the sun rising tomorrow. I ain't putting my neck on the line, but I'm fine with using someone else's neck.

Of course you are. Fine, just have it for me soon. I don't really care how you do it.

Then the pale one is just gone. He turned as if to walk away and then poof. The handsome one turns to look at you and winks, then he's gone as well.

Well that was thoroughly unsettling.
Keep wandering, maybe you can find something a little less "omen-y".

Having been thoroughly spooked, it's not too long before you're back on the wagon and driving away from town. Your brother has been making his signature dumb grin for a good five minutes now and it's starting to piss you off a little.

"So who did you punch this time, Was it the sheriff?"

"No! And this was a proper town, they have policemen here, not sheriffs and deputies."

"Well?"
You clear your throat before explaining what it was you saw.

"There were these two guys having an argument, apparently one of them had something that got stolen and he wanted the other guy to go find it. Then when they came to a conclusion they just disappeared, right out of thin air. Just like that."
You snap your fingers for emphasis, looking around as you start to head out into the long fields that frame the road home. You travel for a few hours, and it's just starting to get dark when you arrive back at the ranch.

You can see your father outside with a few other men, and hear raised voices as you get closer. There's five men stood outside the main house, one of them is talking with Pa but the others are all on horses, hands on weaponry as your Pa yells at the head one. You take the reigns as Barnaby reaches into the back for the shotgun Pa keeps there.

You get closer, and you really don't like what you're hearing.
"Tell your boss that if he wants to buy anything from me he can come down and make the deal hisself, instead of sending armed men. I'm not selling to anyone that won't meet me face to face and I sure as hell ain't selling my land to a guy without knowin' his name."

"All our employer wants is some privacy Mr Campbell, I'm sure you understand."
The lead man is tall and darker skinned with an Italian accent. Black hair peeks out from beneath his hat as he speaks.
"It's for precisely this reason that we're offering so much, much more than the land, or even your farm is worth."

"How dare you."
This farm is your father's pride and joy and he'll not hear a word against it, he opens his mouth to speak again but is swiftly cut off by the revolvers and rifles now pointed at him by the gang. They went from standing about aimlessly to stone cold killers awfully quickly, and none of you were really expecting it.

"You will sign the land over, I've seen it I know it will happen. Just make this easy on yourself."

"Boss, we got incoming."

Then the others turn to face you. You're maybe five or ten metres away now, having parked and dismounted while the argument was ongoing. Barnaby is crouched behind the wagon, concealed and loading the double barrel.

"Right on time, just as I said." Says the tall stranger. "All you have to do is sign the papers Mr Campbell and we'll be on our way. If not, we'll kill everyone here. Really it should be an easy choice to make. Oh and tell your boy to come out from behind the wagon, two shots won't be enough, especially considering he'll miss one of them."

"What the fuck?"

"Do as I say Mr Campbell."

Cont

Not quite happy with how it came out, sorry for the delay.
>>
"Christ, should've known this would turn into a stickup, I'll sign your legal bullshit. Come on out if you're there Barn, don't give 'em a reason."

There's a long moment after that, but soon you hear the clatter of metal hitting the floor and Barnaby comes out from behind the wagon, unarmed and with his hands up. At least there's no way that they could-

"And the boot knife, or your father dies."

"What kind of voodoo horse shit is this?"
Barn swears under his breath and reaches down, pulling it out and throwing it to the floor.

The two of you are stood together now, and the leader of the group nods to one of his compatriots, who comes over with rope.

"Please don't take any offence miss, we just don't want any trouble."

Clock him. Take his gun.

Well he clearly has precognitive powers or something similar. Plus our family's still in harm's way and this is the only timeline thus far where we have a pretty good dad.
>>
>>2738828
>Clock him. Take his gun.
We're already dead. As soon as that thing is signed they'll kill us and not pay a cent and have the land. If not they'll send someone to clean us up eventually.
>>
I'll give it ten more minutes then count the votes.
>>

There's no way he wouldn't see us coming, at least we'll buy some time.
>>
Leave it. Suicide by precognitive cowboy is ill advised.
>>
You seriously consider knocking the man coming to tie you up out, but even then you'd still be at the mercy of several men with guns so you just let them tie you up with Barnaby. A piece of important looking paper is produced and reluctantly signed, which has the stranger start smiling.

"Thank you sir, now I'm afraid that I'm going to have to kill you. Not for my client, I have to figure out how something works."
Two of the other men grab your father by the arms, kicking him down to his feet.

The two of you are yelling from where you're sat, and you can hear shouting coming from within the building as well as two of the men head inside. You try frantically to pull on the ropes as the stranger pulls out a silver pistol. You can see the black engravings on it from here and something about it seems... Strangely comforting.

Not enough to stop you from shouting, swearing and hurling abuse as you pull at the thick rope. Pulling desperately at your bonds you soon feel them give some slack, you keep pulling. But you just aren't strong enough. You see the Stanger level the pistol to your father's head.

So there she was, it would've been the end there. Her family shot by some rich man's thugs and their land stolen, but someone else was there too...

"Take the boys, they have potential. Shoot the others."
The Stranger's words fall heavily on your ears, both you and Barnaby shout out as you hear a gunshot from the house. Not too long after Mike is pulled kicking and biting out of the front door by one of the other thugs. The Stranger keeps fiddling with his gun, poking parts of it with his hand and turning it over before eventually muttering something under his breath and firing it into your father's head.

Then the Stranger falls unconscious. his legs buckling under him as he falls straight backwards. One of the others does the same, and so does Barnaby. Two of the remaining thugs swear and go to pick up their leader, while the last one looks around keenly, muttering as he does so.

"Can't be the father or mother.. Ah."

Then he turns to see you, frantically trying to wake your twin.

"Yeah, I thought so."

He jogs over, shotgun held loosely under his arm as he nears you.

"Y'know your brother's very special, you ought to feel lucky for having someone that incredible in your family. it's a damn shame you can't come with though. See I need to unbind your buddy there, but I can't do it while you're tied to him. So uh.. See you around maybe."

He lifts his shotgun and takes aim, barrel inches from your face.
Then he fires.

Wait, she dies!?

Yep, only for a while though. And only a little bit dead. Not properly.

How does that work?

Well if you let me, I'll tell you won't I?
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
You can't see anything, not a damn thing. You try to move your arms and find them stuck, still tied together with frayed rope. Even if they weren't however, you'd still be locked in a wooden box. You start to panic for a moment, struggling to get your hands free from their bindings, but you're distracted by muffled (and familiar) voices from above.

"Why've I got to do the digging? She's yours anyway, this ain't my problem."

"Because you owe me, Lucy. And you'll do what I say until your debts are paid. Don't worry, I've only got one more favour to ask, then you can be on your merry way."

"Please don't call me that. You know I hate it.

"Why do you think I call you that?"

"Jackass."

The sound of shoveling gets louder and louder, until it's replaced by a heavy thump on the crude coffin's lid.

"Hey, shallow grave! Guess my luck's finally starting to turn."

"Your luck's always been good. Something has to make up for your myriad inadequacies."

The lid of your coffin is pried off, and you're presented with the two suited gentlemen from earlier. The Handsome Man has his jacket removed, and is covered with dirt from the digging but even then it seems to suit him and it gives him a roguish sort of charm. The Pale Man is spotless and vaguely disinterested as always.

"Hey, look who it is!"

"WHAT THE FUCK!"

The Handsome Man recoils as you begin a virtually endless tide of mixed questioning and profanity, scrabbling out of the pit in a panic.
"Whoa, get a load of the lungs on her!"

"Try not to antagonise her Lucy, she's had a hard time."
The Pale Man steps forwards to the edge of your grave, standing tall over the newly excavated pit.

"I'm sure you have lots of questions, but they can wait until we have you untied and properly revived. You're still mostly dead at the moment. I'm about to do something extremely painful and we're in a graveyard at midnight, so I'm going to need you to not scream."

And then your existence is PAIN.

alright, let's get typing.

You realise that up until this point you were incapable of actually feeling much from your body, all sensation was dull and muted. A situation that you would now do anything to return to. As feeling returns to your body all the aches and pains of being shut in a small box for however long make their presence known, not to mention the fact that half of your head is missing. The agony seems to never end, and you only manage to stop yourself from screaming by biting into your arm, drawing thick black blood that stinks like oil.

The pain continues for some time but eventually it does end. You pull yourself up, making use of the Handsome Man's outstretched hand. The good news is that at some point during your pain induced fugue your spasms broke through your bonds.

You're pulled up out of the grave and into an entirely different place. It's very disorienting to be in an empty graveyard one second and then find yourself in a carriage, much more comfortable than the coffin though.

The two men are sat opposite you, The Handsome Man now fully clothed. There's a second of silence before you start to speak.

"What the fuck just happened? Who are you and why did you just pull me out of a grave. If you don't tell me I swear to god I'll start punching till you guys are stains on the goddamn seat cushion."

"Wow, ok. You really need to work out some aggression girl."

"She was just killed, I might also need to vent in her situation.

The Pale man turns to you after lazily castigating his companion.

To answer your question, we are beings of phenomenal (but not total) power. You could use the term god, but in all honesty we're closer to representations of reality's fundamental forces.

"What?"

"He's Death and I'm Sin. It's nice to meet you Beth."

"We brought you back to life because you were dead, and we need a human like yourself to do something for us. You see, the man who killed your family also stole something of mine, a pistol that can kill anything. I use it to protect souls while I bring them to the afterlife. Unfortunately if either of us go and try to get it back personally we will be shot with a gun that can kill anything. That would be catastrophic. If I for example were to be killed, people would just stop dying. There would be no one to shepherd souls to the next life and everything that you know and love would be destroyed by vengeful spirits. Which is why I cannot retrieve it myself. In addition, he has some strange ability that prevents me from surprising him. It tells him my every move, something from outside of this reality gave him a power that can reveal the intentions of gods."

"It's not all doom and gloom love, we reckon we've found a way around it."

You take the pouch as the carriage slows to a halt, the horses outside neighing and stomping as the doors open to reveal Brockton Springs' main street. The two men motion you out, smiling to themselves as you head down onto the road.

I've been thinking about it for a little bit trying to figure out how useful these lower powered Barnaby's would be when the crisis on infinite Barnaby's/golden dawn starts and realized that so far they each have one piece that would really fuck with Scion.
Manic has his molecular bullshit metal that he could stock just about everyone with if necessary, not to mention all the other things he could make and upgrades he can do to people.
Ripper being able to hear weaknesses will be what makes him stay still long enough to hit.
Bethany is seemingly invisible to anything except mundane senses and would be able to hit him with a fair amount of impunity.
The only one who would have been useless was void himself but now he can at least bring the pieces together.

This is going to be a crazy ride.

With a target in mind it takes you a second of focus not to just stomp off and start punching, but there are preparations that need to be done first. You need better clothes and a gun before you can start on the long road to revenge and find your brothers.

You move through the streets and backstreets, searching around to replace your ruined dress with something a bit more practical. A set of good pants is the first thing you loot, snatching it off a laundry line. A shirt here and a vest there starts to bring your outfit together, but it still feels like it's missing something. It's after getting properly changed that you find it, a long black single breasted coat that fits almost perfectly. You also found a dollar in the pocket.

A red bandanna completes the ensemble, giving a hint of colour to the otherwise black outfit. The moon is straight above you now and it feels good being this stylish.

You aren't ready, not quite yet. You need to find a weapon of some kind, something you can use to prosecute your one woman war against your enemies. You spend a fairly long time looking for something to use, hoping against hope that you'll find a shotgun or something leaning against a doorway or behind an easily broken window.

Unfortunately all the buildings you check have barred windows, and you happen across no conveniently placed outhouse weaponry.

In the end, you settle for grabbing a wood axe from someone's back yard and call it a night, heading to the saloon.

It's fairly large, which you suppose fits considering the population of the town it's in. Somer's Rock is the only bar in town despite it's size, a fact that is usually attributed to its owners aggressively discouraging any competition. There are four floors, and lots of windows. Earlier on when the town was smaller, Somer's Rock served as a sort of fort against the dangers of the land. Folk would hole up there and shoot out at bandits, skinwalkers or anything else that came close enough to spook the townsfolk.

You're currently stood across the street from the entrance, listening to the music and laughter coming from inside. Your man is somewhere in there, how are you going to go about this?

Just kick the goddamn door in, see what you scare up.
Maybe take a look around inside before you go on a rampage.
Or you could spend some time coming up with a better idea. Write In.

You head around the back, vaulting a small fence and heading into the alley between the the saloon and the Bank next door. You're about to head in through the back door, but you just as you put your hand on the doorknob it's sent flying outwards and a drunkard staggers out into the alley, pushing you out of the way absentmindedly as he expels the contents of his stomach all over the floor before passing out.

You take the opportunity to liberate him of his belongings, taking his gun belt and pistol as he lays there insensate. It takes you a second to figure out how to load the revolver, you're mostly familiar with your Pa's double barrel but you figure it out fairly quick. Death's rounds are smaller when you open the pouch, and they fit perfectly, just like he said they would.

You head in through the back, stalking through a storage room and past a door that leads down into a small cellar. Eventually you come to a door that opens outwards into the main room of the Saloon. You open it up a crack and take a look through. It's a large room, and despite the late hour you can still count maybe two dozen people inside and making merry.

And right at the back you see him. The bastard who put a shotgun shell in your head and his buddies are sat around a small table, laughing and spilling beer across their poker game. The leader is nowhere to be seen, there is what appears to be a recently vacated seat at the table though. A half finished glass of whiskey sits near a face down hand of cards.

Kick the door in and test the Apocalypse rounds, you'll find the Stranger later.
Try to surreptitiously enter the room, maybe you can get closer before getting the drop on them.
Wait, maybe the Stranger'll come back.
Spend some time thinking up a better plan.

You decide to stay put and wait for the last member of their party's return. No point taking most of them out and letting the ringleader go, you still need a way of finding your brothers after all You wait there for the better parts of an hour, trying to block out the moans of the whores upstairs and ignore the stench of sweat and alcohol coming from the room in front of you.

The bartender comes into the back a few times to get new bottles and replace the occasional smashed glass, but there's no shortage of places to hide in and the hour there goes relatively slowly. You reckon that you really ought to feel tired by now, but you file that thought away in your head as you hear someone coming down the stairs, hurriedly if the speed and noise of the footfalls are anything to go by.

"Alright, we've got our next job boys, look alive."
Yes, that's him.

"What are we looking at? Anything fun?"

"Not yet, we're going back to Fort Nowhere first, now get! We ain't got much time and I want to get those kids on our side."

You're up and out of hiding place fast, peering through the door out into the room as the five men walk towards the exit. Guess now's your best chance.

To jump out and start shooting, they're looking away.
To follow them, you have to find your brothers first.

You rush out of the back door and creep around to the entrance of the alley, crouching down behind the fence that cuts it off from the main street. You can see them leave the Saloon (Somewhat Drunkenly) and start to gather up their horses, which were tied to posts outside. You don't see your brothers with them, or anything big enough to stow a person in anywhere around their persons.

They're pulling themselves onto their horses now, The stranger on a large black stallion at the lead, trotting back and forth as he waits for the others to mount up. It looks like they're headed north.

Am I the only one thinking that this is incredibly stupid?
Are we seriously going after a gang of bandits to the place where they're the strongest... with only a fucking pistol? And alone?

We're gonna need some back-up, the nearby farmers might be interested in knowing there re bandits roaming around killing people for their properties...
>>
>>2741924
>with only a fucking pistol
It's a fucking Colt Single Action Army loaded with rounds straight from the Horsemen of the fucking Apocalypse, AND we're invisible to all senses that aren't the main five - assuming we're also invisible to the bandit leader's precognition superpower, which is mandatory to taking the fucker out - ON TOP OF not needing to eat drink and maybe breathe. We literally do not need anyone else. We just need to stay hidden, stay stealthy, and wait for people to not be in the bandit base when we raid it.

Or go full western-style horror movie and assassinate each bandit one at a time while hiding the bodies - eventually killing the bandit leader last as he is cowers impotently, unable to figure out what is going on due to us being immune to his precog powers - complete with a one-liner as we blow his brains out.
>>
You keep an eye on them as they leave, craning your head around the corner while they ride off northwards as the sun rises over the land. A few minutes later they're out of view, and you start walking up the road. You briefly consider taking a horse, but stop when you come to the realisation that it's been four hours now and you're not hungry thirsty or tired despite being dead for a week.

And you're still dead, aren't you in a way? You're a non person, the Stranger all but confirmed as much when he didn't know you were there. You take some water out of a nearby well and it's just... nothing. You feel like you've eaten a full course meal without the sensation of fullness. There's just no hunger there to sate. You try holding your breath for a while, and that's easy as hell too. It feels weird, sure but there's nothing to it.

I don't need to eat, drink or breathe. Fucking hell. At least it solves a few problems.

You take a canteen of water anyway, just in case and set off after the gang. The sun is still rising as you set off and the tracks are easy to follow, having been made maybe ten minutes hence. They're headed north and west, up towards the old Native lands past Crookback gorge and through the Canyon. You've never heard of Fort Nowhere though.

You keep walking for most of the day, following horse tracks and the occasional bootprint when they dismount to take a piss or let the horses rest. The ground here is loamy and soft because it actually gets rain pretty often, so the tracks are incredibly clear and you make good time. By midday you're about fifty miles to the northwest of Brockton, you would have got further but there was a cliff you hat to walk around that took a few hours, of course they had to go around it too.

It isn't long before you arrive at Hunter's Rest, the last town in this area that you've actually been to. It's less of a town to be fair and more like a quick stop on the way to wherever you're going. It's got a post office, a saloon and a graveyard. Probably where you were buried, considering your lack of money. It's paupers that are buried here, paupers and those that have no one to mourn them.

Of course, it was in much better shape the last time you came here. There were actually folk about for one, and the saloon existed in a much more cohesive state. You walk closer to take a look, and it's quite literally falling apart. Supports and what's left of the roof are slowly turning grey and falling to ash as black tendrils spread like veins throughout the structure. You take a closer look and it's all emanating from a single point, a bullet hole in the mantelpiece. Seems your old friend still hasn't quite worked out that gun of his.

You wonder where the corpses are though?

You take a quick look around the town before heading off, craning your neck to give it a quick eyeball before getting on your way. There's something very wrong about this place, even disregarding what happened to the saloon. The tracks are still fresh, so you continue onward down the road. Still, something has your hackles up as you leave. Like eyes on your back.

You keep on going down the road, eyes kept on the horizon and sweeping for any threats. The land, previously green and relatively pleasant, has given way to hard packed earth and dusty badlands as far as the eye can see. There's all sorts of hills and strange rock formations around your path as well, to your west there's a great mountain to your east, you don't know the name but you can see that it's riddled with caves and holes. It might have made a good vantage point if you weren't already tracking the bastards fairly easily.

The sun goes down eventually and there's all manner of strange animal calls as the badlands are covered in darkness. You make a torch and keep going, using an old dead branch to illuminate your way forwards. The dark is dangerous however.

Well damn...

About two or three hours past sunset you see a fire in the distance. The orange glow illuminating the ground for dozens of metres in any direction. There's two small wagons nearby as well, so you can be pretty sure it's not your man. It's on your way, so you snuff your torch and sneak up to investigate. As you get closer you can hear folk singing, and see two women dancing around the fire while a man sits nearby, being fed by yet another beautiful young girl.

An unnoticed twig snaps and announces your presence, the crack just barely carrying over the sounds of revelry.

The party slows as the folk there start to look around, one of the girls pulls a pistol but most of them are unarmed. That can't be safe. The man stands up, he's tall and thin, with dark hair and a goatee. He looks out into the darkness and calls out with a strangely confident voice.

"Hello? I heard you. Show yourself."

You pull out your Colt and move into the light, it's not aimed at anyone yet, but the hammer's cocked and you're clearly ready to use it. You doubt that you have that much to fear, it's mostly just to discourage any funny business. The man turns to face you, looking rather confused for a moment. Then he shakes his head and motions for you to come closer.

"Well hello miss, I didn't see you there."

"That was the plan."

"Ah, you're a bandit then. Should we be expecting your compatriots any time soon?"

"Ah'm not a bandit, just passin' through. Saw your campfire and thought I'd check it out."

"I don't think that'd be a good idea, slick." You take a step backwards, gun now firmly trained on the dark haired rogue. You can feel it, unfamiliar emotions welling up in your head. Trust Lust and sheer ecstatic Bliss warring in the back of your mind, all of them begging you to put the gun down and just give in. If you were anyone else you'd already have given in but there's something stopping you, like a block in your mind that's holding the emotions down and letting you think clearly. You keep moving back, edging away in the direction of the tracks. You have to keep going, find your family.
"And whatever you're doing to my head, I'd stop it now. I don't even know what the bullets in this gun do"

He balks at that, his genial expression turning into a grimace of anger. "You're tougher than the others, Nothing I can't break with time though. Get her!"

You fire as he dodges to the side, a sickly red tracer whizzing out into the dark night, it lights the area around it like a flare illuminating the darkness outside of the firelight as it flies. The woman with the pistol follows Mr Mind control behind the wagons, while the other two women charge at you.

You bring your left hand up and fan the hammer, snarling as your pistol's retort echoes off the mountains and glowing red tracers rip through the air towards their targets. Your pistol's bark can best be compared to thunder, each shot sounds like a cannon going off near you. The two women charging you are shredded, their bodies lighting up as embers and black oily smoke belches from their mouths, ears and eyes. Your pistol tears through the wagon as well, setting fire to the cloth covering and forcing the man and his slave out into the open.

[-55% Luck]

You pull your left hand away from your pistol, the hammer now glowing red where it struck the back of the chamber and the whole thing smoking menacingly from every possible port.
[-20% Luck]

The man is focusing on you now, forcing conflicting feelings into your mind and afflicting you with doubt and regret. [-1 to next turn's roll]

You act as if you're giving it some thought, a wry grin on your face as he lowers his hands and takes a step forwards.

"Think about it, you and me until the end. Just say you'll stay by my side."

You drop your smile and look him dead in the eye, pulling the hammer back as your face goes expressionless.

"I do."

The last bullet in your revolver tears through the space between his eyes blowing a chunk out of his head and sending him flopping lifelessly to the floor.

"Want to shoot you that is. Bastard."

Huh, looks like I have a new game to give a try. Quest is still just as good, if not better, than earlier arcs and i'm excited to see where this plot-line goes.

Are we still going to be dealing with PRT bombing after bank job then or will the target change? I was a big fan of Dauntless's emergence from the bombing so I will be sad to see it go away. Less a fan of that entire snake incident so its nice that we can retry/sidestep that.

A golden sun rises over the badlands, illuminating a single figure trudging slowly through the desert. The path she follows leads into a small town hidden in the shadow of a great marble arch. There's a mine set up as well, just outside of town. It seems that walking through the night has made up for your slower method of transportation, you see The Stranger's horse tied to a post outside of what's either a brothel or a fancy coaching inn. Maybe both. Walking into the town, you see that there's still people here, at least for now.

Knowing the Stranger, it's not going to be too long before he gets curious about the workings of his new pistol and rectifies the situation. You don't understand the difficulty in it's use. It seems to be killing things fairly well from what you've seen. Hell it even killed a Saloon, you're pretty sure that's better than normal.

You untie the gang's horses when no one is looking and slap them on their rumps, sending them careening off into the town. It's early in the morning and only a few people are about, so no one stops you. Now for the second part of your plan. You have to set up in a hiding spot somewhere, preferably where you can see them and they can't see you.

There's a church, as well as quite a few buildings in town that are fairly high.

An elevated position would be preferable, have em looking into the sun.

Our Colt is not a rifle. Also if they try chasin' we can bait em into the dark alley filled with empty bottles we can throw and break, multiple chokepoints and corners we can abuse with our axe, etc. This is one alley where the only way out is death, and we've already met the guy.

While being high up is obvious, we don't have a lot of options from the alley. Could we block off other alleys or set the odds in our favor? Preferably something with fire.

You look over your options before taking up a hiding spot. A roof would be the first place anyone would look, you feel it would sacrifice the element of surprise far too easily. Sneaking around behind them would be too risky, so instead you go for something a bit easier.

There is a dark alleyway across from where the Stranger and his crew are staying, it's long and winding, and turns twice before coming out on the other side of the building. A wonderful place to hide. Easy to defend too.

You spend about an hour there, standing still in the shadow of the alley until your prey decide to surface. And true to your suspicions it's not long before you hear an ear splitting bang and a scream, shortly followed by one of the gang members running out into the street only to find their horses missing. What are you going to do?

You knock over a bottle in the alley mouth, kicking it against the wall and shattering it before hiding behind the corner. It's not long before you hear footsteps coming towards your hiding spot. As he turns the corner you swing the wood axe at neck height, biting deep into his veins and causing blood to spurt everywhere. The axe is brought up and down two more times before he stops gurgling, then you hear the others.

It seems that your friend here wasn't quite as stupid as you'd hoped, and two other members of the Stranger's crew come around to check the alley after their friend. You recognise the man who killed you as one of those who came to look for their friend. There's a long moment as the three of you all look at each other, the gangers horrified at the gruesome spectacle before them. Then, you all go for your guns.

The two gunmen take cover at the entrance to the alley while you dive behind a large cart filled with barrels, and the battle is on. You can only see two of the gangsters at the moment, but they're both calling for their allies and boss.

The two gangsters draw their revolvers and start firing as you dive and roll into cover, rounds bouncing and ricocheting as the alleyway fills with smoke. You can feel bullets pinging off the cart you're hiding behind, but you're not worried. These idiots couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, especially with the first one panicking and yelling at the top of his lungs all the time. You kind of get why he'd be surprised, but his boss is omniscient. You'd figure that he might be used to weird shit by now.

"I told you man! I told you I had a bad feeling! Now the dead are fuckin' rising."

"Shut the fuck up and shoot!"

You hurl yourself out of cover, both guns booming like the voice of a thunderous and wrathful god as they belch thick black smoke and burning embers. The outlaws duck back into cover but it provides little comfort, your guns tear great chunks out of the building corner they're hiding behind and kick up huge obscuring clouds of brick dust that set them coughing and shrinking away from your fury.

You duck back behind the cart as the outlaws fire back, reloading methodically as you hear the bullets pinging off of your cover. A barrel shatters as you stand up, struck by an errant round.
(-10 luck.)

You level your guns on the outlaws, the barrels and cylinders aimed square at the corner they're hiding behind, then you let loose. You'd been firing your pistols slowly before, giving the barrels time to cool down between shots. Now you let loose with everything you have, disregarding the glowing barrels and smoking chambers that appear after the second or third shot. (-20 Luck)

Your pistols' retort echoes throughout the town, barking louder and louder as you fire until windows shatter from the noise of it. Your senses narrow as you fire, all of your being fixated on the sheer sensation of firing. Your heart is pumping in rhythm with the booming of the guns and the feel of the recoil in your hands is magnificent. Before long the alleyway is filled with black choking smoke and orange embers, the building that the outlaws were hiding around is damn near demolished, the cowering fools behind it looking nearly as terrified as the occupants now that they're out in the open. (-50 enemy Luck).

With the ringing in your ears subsided, you can hear two sets of footsteps turning the corner behind you, so you walk back behind cover before turning to face them, guns pointed at the ready. What surprises you is that these aren't the outlaws. You spot a gold star on one and a silver star on the other as they turn, guns out and pointed. The Sheriff nods and gets into cover next to you, his deputy following close behind and shooting to force the Outlaws back into cover.

"Ah Christ... You a bounty hunter then? Should've pegged the bastard as an outlaw."

You give the Sheriff a once over before answering, not usually being one to take folk at their word. He seems legit however, and you answer fairly swiftly.

"Yeah, something like that. been chasing them for a while now. Watch out for the guy in charge, he's-"

"Got some crazy voodoo bullshit? Yeah I know."

You nod and step out of cover, the Deputy and Sheriff looking surprised and somewhat worried as you do. You don't take any notice though, you have revenge to get. The outlaw who doesn't know you gathers his wits and raises his gun before you blow a hole the size of a bowler hat brim in his chest. The other just lays there, shuddering as you draw closer and praying quietly.

"No, no no. Please, it was nothin' personal. You know the boss, he'd kill me if I let you live."

"Yeah, but you would've died a good man, proud that he'd stood up for something. Now you're in the dirt."

He gives you one last look before averting his eyes, silently mumbling to himself as he thumbs a small cross.

What are you going to do?

Let One live, the Sheriff can have him.
Nah, kill him.

You spin your revolver in your hand before bringing it crashing down on the outlaw's head, knocking him silly for the Sheriff or his deputy to pick up. There'll be no grand speech or brutal revenge for this one. He's not worth it. The best he can hope for now is a swift hanging.

You look over at the law before taking a quick peek out at the inn, and what you see there almost paralyses you with fear and confusion.

No but we might become western Metal Gear, seeing as we already have a Colt Single Action Army and twirled it briefly before pistol whipping the guy who shot us dead.
>>
You stop and stare as you turn the corner and the inn comes into view, you'd seen the after effects of the gun before but never seen it in action and that is so much more horrifying. The Saloon is covered in these black oily tendrils that you can see sucking the life and colour out of the people and even the building itself. You can see the people dissolving as they're held in place by eldritch tendrils emanating from further within the building. More distressing is that no noise escapes the dying folk within, it's a silent death.

Most of the building has broken down into white ash now, leaving only metal rubble and the occasional piece of jewelry behind as the wood seems to decay the fastest, followed shortly by the people. The tendrils of death continue waving and splitting off as the building dies however, searching desperately for something to latch onto and kill. Just outside of it all the Stranger and his men stand, the man himself observing the destruction with a triumphant expression. He looks inordinately pleased with himself.

You also see that one of his men has acquired some horses from somewhere. They're most likely about to ride off.

You take aim at the Stranger, red hot rage burning through your veins as you raise your gun to take the bastard's life. But then you have an idea, a brief moment of clarity in the maelstrom of anger overwhelming you. You adjust your aim and fire, not at the man but at his holstered weapon. To you he's just another man, it's the gun that makes him dangerous. Two shots ring out from your revolvers and the Stranger stumbles before frantically reaching for the now unholstered pistol as it falls heavily to the floor. Another shot grazes him and causes him to reconsider. He dives behind cover, cursing under his breath as the other two turn to face you, shouting for help from their leader.

"What the fuck boss? Could you not have told us we had company?"
They raise their rifles to fire.

You leap out of cover and charge where the pistol fell, hoping that your speed and the unexpected nature of the action would throw off the aim of the gunmen, unfortunately you're only somewhat right and a .308 round blows a chunk out of your head. -40 Luck

You keep running but the Stranger clearly had a similar idea, and he vaults the cart he was hiding behind to make his own grab for Death's gun. The other Outlaws clearly have the same idea, and move in to help him out as what might have been a gunfight turns into a close ranged brawl.

You're about to pick up the Pistol, but the Stranger kicks you heavily in the chest, sending you sprawling back into the dirt. You dodge another kick and push him back into the cart before you have to duck under a swing from one of the bandits, who's using his rifle like a club.

"Jesus Christ lady, why won't you die?"

You knee the Stranger in the dick before turning to the other Outlaws and drawing your axe. You dodge a swipe from one of them and bring your axe down, but you're barged out of the way by his friend before you can land the hit. The Stranger recovers quicker than you'd been expecting, and punches you hard in the chest. -10 Luck

You swing the axe hard at outlaw number three and it bites hard into his rifle, forcing him away from you and causing his friends to hesitate for a second.
You can hear running from behind you now, most likely the Sheriff having finished with the one you had spared before.

Luckily you've managed to make distance from the Bandits and the Stranger, enough that you can use your pistols comfortably. You also notice the Sheriff take up position back across the street and start firing. The Stranger calls out to his men though, and gets them into cover before they can be injured. No doubt he saw that coming. The Gun is still on the ground thankfully, but The Stranger is eyeing it desperately, when he's not staring over at you that is.

You duck fully back behind cover, reloading your pistols as you do so. Jesus Fuck your head hurts, you take a quick feel around with your hand and realise that your head has been pretty much entirely caved in above the eyes. Which you suppose kind of makes sense. It's you not being dead that confuses you. Another second or so of inspection, and it becomes apparent to you that your head is very slowly healing. +25 Luck

The Bandits are currently being pinned down by the Sheriff, he's firing some sort of revolving shotgun at the Outlaws and keeping their heads down. The two with weapons seem somewhat stressed, shouting at their companion to "DO something." and occasionally firing back in between volleys. The Stranger seems rather relaxed, seemingly positioned for a runner's start once the Sheriff stops firing.

The gunfight dies down for just a second once you've finished loading your pistols, the bullets stop and the shouting dies down as everyone except you reloads and rearms, both outlaws and the law trying desperately to be the first man with a loaded gun. Unfortunately for the killers, you're quicker on the draw. You turn and bring up your weapons just as the Stranger bursts from his hiding spot, surprise plain on his face as he sees you turning to fire on him.

Your rounds kick up a mass of dust and smoke around him, brightly coloured incendiaries bursting on what remains of the Inn and sending out gouts of bright red hellfire. None of your shots hit unfortunately, as he dives back behind cover and keeps moving. A few rounds do impact his friends though, red tracers nicking their shoulders and setting their coats on fire. Your rounds also chew through their cover, blasting huge chunks out of the wooden signs they're kneeling behind. -50 Luck.

The outlaws are still reloading, and so don't fire back. They do manage to finish however, desperately weathering your cruel barrage. +10 Luck.

By the time you're finished your guns are smoking heavily, and the old black powder one is vibrating while parts of it melt and fuse. You don't drop it yet as it still works, but you'll have to knock some parts back into place once the fight is over. -20 Luck.

You and the Sheriff keep up the pressure, forcing the outlaws to stay in cover and hope that none of your shots hit. More and more of their cover is stripped away as red tracers and buckshot perforate the signage that they're cowering behind, and you can hear their desperation as they frantically whisper to each other inbetween ear splitting gunshots. You pause to reload and one of the Outlaws pops up with a rifle, taking aim at you and pulling the trigger, unfortunately for him you're faster on the draw. You raise your second pistol and perforate his head and chest with three quick shots, feeling a bullet zip past your neck. -50 enemy Luck.

The Stranger looks about now, clearly terrified at the sudden turn of fate. He shouts something that you don't quite catch then turns to run, vaulting over a fence and turning around the ruins of the Inn. You send a bullet his way and it takes him in the knee, but it's your last one before you need to reload. You see him pull himself to his feet as you reload, head turned back and looking you dead in the eye as he grits his teeth. Then he's gone, you can't see him through the rubble but he can't have gone far. Plus he's leaving a rather obvious trail of blood.

That just leaves The last man. Something rather strange is happening now though, he's shaking feverishly and laughing. You can see spike of bone emerging from his the very tips of his fingers.

Is this alternate universe Marquis or someone else? He was pretty based in canon Worm, but here? Screw how based he may or may not still be: we're in the AMERICAN WEST. You pull a gun, you're gonna die by the gun.

>Run and gun: Safer, but less damage.
We have no clue what this guy can do so we need to play it safe until we find an opening to GO FOR THE GUN. The Stranger is leaving an easy blood trail for us to follow after. We'll get our revenge, but Death's gun is priority.

You look over to the Sheriff, confused at this newest development in things. The two of you look between yourselves and the outlaw, now slowly covering himself in bone, shrug and continue to pour fire into him. The Sheriff's buckshot bounces off and most of your shots deflect, but an exceptional one does manage to penetrate between the madman's armour. -15 Luck

He finishes growing his armour, and stand up out of cover. He's clearly not afraid of your weaponry now, and raises bladed arms as he charges the two of you. You dodge backwards and jog while firing, trying to slow him down, but nothing quite seems to work. His armour is regrowing as fast as it can be destroyed. You duck under a wild swing, then step back as he raises his arms, apparently seeking to plunge them into the ground.

You jump backwards as the bone monstrosity brings it's arms down, jumping away and rolling as bone explodes outwards. The Monster laughs and swings again, but you keep dodging and even manage to fire a round into the back of it's right knee, bringing it down for a second and letting you make some space between the two of you. You step backwards afterwards and blow a chunk out of it's chest armour, but it grows back extremely swiftly and you can't take advantage of the opening. -10 Luck

WE REMEMBERED THE BASICS OF CQC EVEN THOUGH WE'RE JUST A FARMER'S GIRL FROM THE STICKS
>>
You step away from the beast as it stalks towards you, swinging his bone claws at incredible speeds. You dodge most of them rather neatly, dipping under his wild swings and jumping out of the bone explosions that his slams create, he seems somewhat uncomfortable in his new body and you use that to the fullest, twisting and turning around him as he very nearly unbalances. All good things come to an end though, and the thing clips you with a forearm and sends you flying. Your guns are useless, and beyond your unusual toughness you haven't got anything that could take him down.

Then your eyes refocus on the Gun. It's just behind the monster, but you've a cunning plan.

You bring your pistols up and rush the monstrosity, firing wildly as you break into a full sprint. The impacts do little actual damage, but they unbalance it and make it over it's eyes, shielding itself from the light and heat. Then you jump. You use it's bent knee as a springboard up to it's shoulder then jump forwards, rolling in the air to deliver two more shots into the back of it's head and pushing it forwards. You drop one of your pistols and keep rolling as you hit the ground, your free hand closing around a grip that burns like ice, you pull the gun into your hand properly, pull the hammer back and...
̴̯̣͙͉̦̈́̊̆ͨ͛̎ͣ͋ͤ͘ ͈̭͎̹͓̖̈́ͣ̍̉̒͟͢͝F̶̞̼̥̺̦͙̯͙͉̳̹̰̦̱̦̘͔͍̮̂͗̓͆̾̇ͮͮ̕͠î̪̫̘̯̗̳͉̻̗̝̞ͭ͛̄ͭͯ̇̓̊͑̇͑͒͐ͬͩ̂́ͅr̵̜͓̹̣̺̣̘͓̣̆͒ͮ̆͆ͮ̾̋ͨ̒͊ͮ̀͞ȩ̧͈̖̠̱̝̻̺ͦ̈́̈̎̉̏̓ͬ̇̒ͦͯͫ̐̚̕ ̢̢͙̯͎̦̈́̋̍ͤ̿̀̀͘͞ͅ ̠̥̭̗͙̱͚̟̖̘̠̳̝̼̮͌ͣ̍̈̇̐ͭ́̽͛ͣ͐́̚͠
You nearly vomit from the sensation, it's Horrible and as the beast slowly falls to ash you're struck with the realisation that he's dead now, not the wishy washy dead that happens to most people where they keep going in some way. But Dead, he's Gone. Jesus H Christ.

You've just consigned a man to an eternity of nonexistence.

A warm hand helps you up as a warm voice soothes your spirit.

Come on hun, you're almost there.

Death and Sin are standing next to you now, the two suited men pulling you up from where you were bent over on the floor. Death smiles and opens his mouth to speak.

"Nicely done Bethany, I'll be taking that back now. You go and get him, he hasn't gone far.

There's a certainty in his tone, and you look down at Death's pistol as he says so.

Yeah, fair enough, I have some revenge to extract.
No, I'm keeping the gun.
>>

You stare blankly at the gun for a second before handing it back to Death and shaking your head. Some things aren't meant for regular folk to have.
"Yeah, enjoy your gun or whatever. I've got to get my brothers back."

"You need to get revenge Bethany, the thief Must Die."

"And that too, you want some milk while I'm out? Maybe I can pick you up some nails while I'm at it?"

Sin chuckles at this, and nudges Death in the shoulder.

"See? I told you she was a good one. Never miss a trick, me."

Death stares blankly at you for a few more seconds before continuing in his monotone voice. "He has to die Bethany, the power he has isn't supposed to be here. This is Important."

"Okay, I'll do it. Not like I was planning on letting him live."

You shake Death's hand off of your shoulder before moving to follow the Stranger's blood trail, reloading as you go. He managed to get a fairly long distance, it's actually quite impressive. You find him about five minutes walk out of town, crawling along the dusty road north on his belly. His legs seem to have failed him because he's pulling himself along with his arms. You kick him over and he screams as you stomp on his knee to keep him still. His eyes meet yours, and he swears under his breath before starting to talk.

"Fuck me... who the hell even are you anyway? You don't look like a whore and I tend not to leave anyone else alive who might be this vengeful. Not to say you wouldn't make a fin- hrgnk"

You cut him off by leaning even heavier on his shattered knee, a rictus grin painted across your face.
"Where are my brothers? Tall and blonde like me. I know you took them."

"Fuck you bitch."

A stomp to the crotch has him rolling and groaning on the floor, and might motivate him to answer your question.

"Come on you cock jockey, where's Fort Nowhere! Death owes me, we can literally do this forever."

He looks up at you, then grimaces.

"If I tell you, you'll kill me here and now? With a regular gun that is, not any of that weird bullshit the pale guy does. Promise me."

"Yeah alright. Can't promise it'll be quick. I kind of want to take my time."

He laughs at that, coughing as he looks up at you.
"I can't exactly blame you for that can I? Still it's better than just Stopping. Honestly that gun scared me, don't want to be on the receiving end of that."

You nod, then point your revolver at his head.
"So?"

"Head north about thirty miles, there's a mountain range shaped like a horseshoe. We got fortifications, cannons. All that kind of stuff. Your brothers'll be there. Now get it done before the big man gets here."

So, the world has regular parahumans powered by Entities. Then there's us with non-Entity benefactors in the form of Sin and Death. And then there's apparently a third source of powers?
>>
>>2762634
Nah, Death and Sin's kind take offence to the Entities and their meddling.

Think about it this way.
Gods and Ideas are more powerful than the entities and much more territorial, but limited to this one dimension because this is the dimension with Magic.
Like actual magic.

Thing is the universe still has rules, very important rules. Rules that the Entities break.

Death is talking about shards when he mentions powers that Should Not Be.

Something something "Death always wins. Truth is... The game was rigged from the start."
>>
Well, you are a lady of your word after all. You shrug before putting three bullets in his chest, the fine black coat he wears combusting into a wicked blue flame as he shudders and screams. It's fairly quick, he dies in maybe twenty seconds. Then again, you don't actually know how long that actually is relative to other methods of death. Except Death's gun, you're exquisitely aware that it kills instantly. His eye makes contact with yours, and for just a second you feel like you need to say something, anything. It'd be a disservice not to.

"You bet everything you had on that power of yours, it told you what to do and where to go. When to bluff and when to fold. But Death's been playing the game for far too long to lose to one of us. Truth it, the game was rigged from the start."

[The Stranger:Deceased.]
[Path to Evade Death:Failed.]

The Carriage rolls up next to you and the door opens, revealing your otherworldly patrons. Death is impassive as ever, but Sin looks oddly nervous. You figure it's because you just killed a guy who by all rights should've been immortal. Death motions you in and nods to the seat opposite. You climb on in and take the offered seat, grinning slightly. You can feel a strange mix of emotions, sadness grief and sadistic joy all warring within you, but it's like you're watching them through a window. They're oddly muted. Is this it, are you never going to feel things properly ever ag-

Death clears his throat, and you snap back out of your existential doubt long enough to make eye contact.

"You did well Bethany, I was not disappointed."
Death brings out a set of small glasses from a side drawer in the carriage and Sin pours a measure of whisky into the two glasses. grinning awkwardly as he does so. Like most of his actions, it's oddly charming, and you have a little difficulty taking your eyes off of him.

"In fact, I'm deeply impressed. You fared much better than I had expected. Please, drink."

You tear your eyes off the suited man in front of you and (somewhat sheepishly) take a gulp of the liquor.

"However there are rules that I must follow, and no matter how effective you might be I cannot allow someone who has died to continue action in the world of the living. I hope that you forgive me for what I've done. "You slump in your seat as you hear this, unable to move as Death pours his glass out onto the floor of the carriage. You can see Sin huddled in the corner and curled into himself, unable to meet your eye. "You will be reunited with your family soon, I promise. Your father and mother... Your brothers. I have pulled some favours in recognition of your work. Heaven isn't quite as you'd imagine but it's still rather enjoyable this time of year." He actually emotes at this for the first time since you've met him, the corners of his mouth turning upwards in the tiniest hints of a smile. Lucy, dispose of the body. Then I shall have no further need of you."

You stagger out of the orgy red faced and bow legged, drinking heavily from a black bottle containing some hideous rotgut. Even now your clothing falls well on you, the stains and ruffles making you look sexy rather than disgusting and homeless. Something's missing though, and you can't quite tell what it is. You've fucked half a dozen men and twice that many women, even now some pretty young thing is leading you upstairs. The two of you are practically attached at the mouth but it's just not enough, There's this hideous gnawing inside you, some ache that can't be sated, no matter how much alcohol, opium or other, less savoury fluids you ingest.

Maybe you've spent too long as a human, you muse, thrusting into the pretty blonde. Maybe Taxation is right and too much time in a mortal shell has addled your mind, you wouldn't be the first one it's happened to after all. You look down and gaze upon your lover's flesh desperately searching for what isn't there, what's lacking. And there is so much to critique, you've an eye for perfection after all, it comes with the territory. Her cheekbones are too high and her eyes are grey, (Almighty you've always hated grey, it reminds you of Him.) They'd be much better as a nice light green. Then there's her muscles, or rather the complete lack. She looks like a damn stick. Not like...

Oh no.

It's happened again.

Why does this always happen to you?

You pull yourself off of the girl and summon your clothes back onto yourself, not even bothering to go through the song and dance of pretending to put them on the mortal way. Then you storm out ignoring the insulted squawks of the girl you were laying. No, no it's not that. You just need some air is all. You head out into the courtyard heedless of the debauchery all around. Something about it just feels tasteless now, lacking in substance. Quantity over quality.

Then you stop as a somewhat relieving thought reaches the forefront of your consciousness, a product of your fevered mind's desperate attempt to rationalise the situation. It doesn't matter, she's dead. Even if that had happened, it's useless to think about it because she's six feet under. You buried her yourself. It's morbid sure, but the fact remains, you'll never see her again. So why worry. Sure the man you're stabbing with a pilfered kitchen knife upon falling into a mindless grief addled rage might have raised some valid objections were you to ask him, but you didn't so there. This is a monologue after all, having other people in it would somewhat defeat the purpose.

The thought occurs to you that maybe you ought to continue your debauchery somewhere else, somewhere with less people around or at least less police officers. An uncomfortable amount of time passes before you realise you've went back to the graveyard. A very poor place for debauchery indeed. At least without preparation.

>Maybe Taxation is right and too much time in a mortal shell has addled your mind, you wouldn't be the first one it's happened to after all.
>Taxation
Didn't the Founding Fathers say "no taxation without representation" or something? I bet he's best buddies with Death, as the saying goes.

>(Almighty you've always hated grey, it reminds you of Him.)
Death? Or someone else? Who knows?
>>
You absentmindedly wander through the rows of graves, hands tracing the edges of the stone and wooden markers. You read them out of the corners of your eyes as you pass by, each one a singular person with their own hopes and dreams. How many of them had their last wishes torn away from them by that bastard? How many died hating themselves for never quite managing something? Taking death as an inevitable, some ineffable rule of the universe that could never be questioned and blaming themselves for not taking such a thing into account.. Not for the first time in your long, long life are you filled with a white hot burning rage. Who is He to choose who exists? How long you're allowed to stay in this part of existence? The bastard took it upon himself and killed anyone who said otherwise.

Then you're there, and the anger is replaced with that empty gnawing from before. Is this loss? Any other emotion or pain you can enjoy, there is no suffering that in some way cannot be twisted to feed your wanton lusts.

But this is different.

You Hate it.

Her grave marker is a small thing, you hadn't the strength to make anything bigger that would stand the test of time. You really should have stated the terms of your agreement with Death more clearly. Now you're nothing. Practically a mortal. Not for the first time you bemoan your weakness, kneeling in front of the grave and trying desperately to think of something, anything that could allow you to fight back. But no. No you had your chance, now he has the pistol back and nothing can even touch him.

It was your cowardice that enabled this, you smiled and waved and played the sexy fool. Now a girl who just wanted her family back is lying in a six foot hole. Maggot food forever. Maybe if you'd warned her she could have done it, freed herself from the worst murderer ever to exist. Now she's a plaything of the almighty again, just like the rest of you. Locked into The Plan forever.

Unless... No, he'll kill you like that. A wave of his hand and a flick of his dick and it'd all be over. But.. maybe it wouldn't be so bad? Dying for something better, greater than yourself. It'd could be great actually, people everywhere would scream his name as the man that defied Death. And of course there's the fact she'd be alive.

Chances were he'd die of course, and if they succeeded it'd probably Fuck over the entire world and celestial hierarchy.
With odds like that how could he possibly turn down the opportunity?
First though, Lucifer needed a shovel, he had some digging to do.
After all, what's an Apocalypse without friends?

>Then you're there, and the anger is replaced with that empty gnawing from before. Is this loss?
>Is this loss?

You Might ask me a question that is plot relevant.
>>

Is One Bad Day currently in Act 1 or Act 2? Also, how much have you planned out however it is that all these stories are gonna tie together?
>>
>>2763233
>One Bad Day:Back In Time.

>>2763306
Why is Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Arc 2 blocked now?
Can Death's gun kill Scion?
Is Sin the literal Devil?
>>
>>2763346
1: Just after the bank, so start of Act two.
2:I have a general understanding of how they should all fit together, I didn't plan too much because anons will ruin my plan. To quote a great man. Idiots plan. Geniuses steer.

All of me selected.
Gonna be running that on the 30th of July so in three days time. Probably about two O'clock gmt

1: Because arc 2 of Void Knight takes place where we left off there. I forgot to do it last time.
2:Yes, maybe, if it hit.
3:Kind of. He's not evil, just hedonistic and a bit selfish.

>All sorts of stories and tales are told in the West. In this one? Death comes calling to a farmer's girl and gunpowder fills the air...
Please vote on this one as well as the other threads if you haven't already. Upvotes are nice even though they're ultimately worthless.

Also a bit psychotic due to being a bored, angry and lonely immortal.

What were the two other possible weapons we could have taken at the start?
>A large silver Bowie knife, plain and uncomplicated. "It'll come back when you want it, just try not to get too angry."
>A small derringer. You think you might have seen it somewhere before. "It's like you, but a gun. Folk will look right past it."
>>
>>2763376
How would have we killed The Stranger if we had chosen a normal trigger event? Also would Death and Sin still appear?
>>
>>2763389
Murder's Knife and Secrecy's Derringer.
Murder's knife is basically the same as apocalypse rounds but for melee.
Secrecy's derringer is silent and turns the bodies of those it kills invisible.

1:Events would have transpired differently resulting in you getting similar powers, you'd just get them from the Entities instead. Stranger/Brute.

2:Death and Sin would still be there, but Death would be outright hostile as opposed to trying to trick you. Sin would still be Obsessed with you.

So Death really hates capes huh. He killed Barnaby and Mike didn't he
>>
>>2763406
>Murder's Knife
Straight outta Cain & Abel.
>Secrecy's Derringer
Wonder what this is based on or from.

How would Scion/Eden be depicted here?

They're technically fuckhuge conglomerate colonies of biometallic ayyylien life that break all laws of the universe, with only the goal of causing and spreading suffering to make people trigger and receive their shards so they can multiply and "reproduce" - only to instakill everyone sharded to generate enough power to leave the planet while destroying it everywhere and in every time.
Maybe a cold rich couple decked out in fancy silver and gold outfits?

you never told him where the gang's hideout was.
In fact, you aren't sure he even knows there is a hideout.

>>2763426
basically yeah.
>>
>>2763451
I know this is a really spoilery question but what's the plan if when we go void again and fail just as hard as the last time? Is there a plan? I'll take a simple yes or no on regards to if you've thought about it.
>>
>>2764224
If you do, both Void Knight and other protagonists can die.
Try to avoid that.
>>
>>2764537
Dropped muh name
>>
i dont think we should control void anymore, i'd rather he remained as a Bigger Bad or bigger good working behind the scenes and fucking things up for the Entities.
>>
>>2764638
don't worry, that's not how it works.
You control the Barnaby of whichever Universe he's in at the time.
