As you appear back in your HQ, you have to admit, you kinda missed the place.

But, all in all… “Job well done, girls. Welcome back home!” As one, the lot of them seem to slump down in relief, having finally gotten full and complete confirmation that they were back, safe and sound.

Izumi rubs her side. “Glad to be back, really. This one was...exhausting. In more ways than one.” She doesn’t need to say why, and no one asks for elaboration.

”Fraaaaankly, I thought you all were astounding! Even when things got a little rooooough, you all pulled through- and did I mention DO so love the bonuses you managed to swing!? Mmm-mmm, aaaaaabsolutely wonderful!”

You find it hard to disagree with him, this time.

JOB COMPLETE!

-PRIMARY SERVICE RENDERED- PRIMARY PAY DELIVERED IN FULL

SECONDARY SERVICE ACCOMPLISHED- PAYMENT DELIVERED IN PARTIAL

Hello, magical, mystical mercs for hire! I’m back (sorta kinda) and glad to be so. As for you...Welcome back to Magical Girl For Hire Quest!

In case you missed all the fantastic events over the last few months, we went on a search and hold job for a local mafia outfit (yep, another one)...only it was just discovered it was a mafia outfit after we got there. They had a ruin they wanted checked out, and BOY was it checked out- turns out the relic was an airship, still functional! We repaired it (mostly), and had to fight off a massive amount of biological nightmares to do it. Thanks to the help of an unusual artificer/engineer and his allies, we managed to hold our position- and gain some nice loot, to boot. Both monetary and...well, helpful in other ways.

Mono stretches, hard enough you can hear some bones crack. “Ugggggh, man, that was a slog. Can I just kinda...y’know, go ta bed?” A few other murmurs indicate similar desires.

“Don’t see why not,” you admit. “Frankly, incoming dues or not, I think we all deserve a break after that one-”

“Ohh, heeey, girls!” A quick tap-tap-tapping signifies the approach of Lorelei, and judging from the multiples, she’s not alone. “You made it back! Awesome!” Sure enough, she’s there, the little medic bot besides her, although...you can’t help but notice that she seems to be in a different outfit than before.

“Ms. Lorelei’s so interesting!” Prima effuses. “She’s taught me so much! Do you like my new ‘threads’?” While when you first saw her she was in a traditional flowing kimono, she seems to...well, she’s still got something like that on, but underneath now she’s got...is that hot pants and a crop top?

“Yeh, gal’s been a rip-snortin’ good time! Showed me a thing or two!” And next to her, that bigger one, Jago...with a hat and some kind of metallic vest. And a pipe. A metal smoking pipe. That’s not actually smoking.

...How long were you gone?

Lorelei’s already getting in your face a bit as your team disperses. “Soooo? You gonna tell me all the juicy details? Me an’ Pri-pri and J have had a BLAST gettin’ to know each other! Even took a job with ‘em! We could trade stories!”

>...Rain check, Lori. Please? I think I just want to relax for now.

Part of you just wants to beg off- she’s a friendly face, sure. But she’s kinda come in at a bad time. Sleeping on location just doesn’t have the same relaxation factor as sleeping in your own bed. Still...well, you’ll have plenty of time in a moment- and you know full well that if you don’t, she’s gonna bug you until you do. Thinking about it, you could kill two birds with one stone. “Alright, fine, but it’ll be quick. There’s a couple of things I want to make sure arrived that we got from the last job.” A quick look around tells you that they aren’t in the warehouse, sadly, but…wait. That door wasn’t there before.

“Heeeeeey, so you noticed it! Do you reeealllly think that I’d just plop two things that big in your lovely little space?

Your answer is quick and merciless. ”Yes.”

“Nope!” Ugh, he sounds so HAPPY to prove you wrong. “They’re out back! Buuuuuut, if you want to build a hangar...you knoooow the drill!” Of course, Sal.

Sighing lightly to yourself, you wave Lorelei to come with you to the break room as she squeals in happiness. You need a drink. “Eeeeee! So, I have to say, it’s been AMAZING. Pri-pri and J and I were already great with each other, but it’s been so FUN just being able to help them realize things!”

“She taught me how to dance!” Prima opines, her eyes almost literally beaming with happiness. “It was difficult at first to get the subtle movements, but I find a strange joy in being able to express myself in such a way! I had knowledge of the act before, but no ability!”

“Leaning a few things meself,” Jago agrees. “Got a few, uh...places ‘round town I wanna get ta know betta.” The way he looks away and towards Prima makes you mildly curious, but you’re in no mood to question it.

“That’s nice,” you say, although a part of you quivers with nerves over just what she’s been teaching these bots. “Well, here’s what we did in a nutshell. Had to raid a ruin to get some lost technology and keep it from interlopers.” Pouring yourself some tea, you let the hot liquid slide down your throat easily before continuing. “Turns out it was a whole airfield in a past life. Centerpiece was a full aerial carrier. Sounds simple, but…”

You keep talking for a bit, only slowing down once you get to the back of the room, turning away as you turn the knob and open the door. And you have to grin at what you see outside.

“Whoooooaaaaa…sick!” Lorelei gasps as the full weight of what you brought back hits her. Izumi seems like she chose well.

The smaller, sleeker vehicle is clearly a fighter plane. From what you recall, it looks reminiscent of fighters that you’ve seen before- those missile emplacements look lovely- but there are areas on the frame that seem to be a bit more unusual- a couple of unused hardpoints, and areas near the fuselage, wings, undercarriage, and even canopy, and you find yourself wondering what you could get out of this…

The transport ship is similar- there’s nothing super special about it, even though you like the front-mounted gun, but you get the sense that it could be modified to an extreme if you knew the right people or had enough money to pay for it. Heck, this thing still needs a paint job. It's not exactly slate grey, but no numbers, no nothing on it.

“Yoooo!” Lorelei CHEERS. “You finally got us our own ride! Awesome! No more having to hoof it everywhere or havin’ to hope the payer has transport! Ooh, can I driv-”

“HECK no.” Ugh, you don’t even want her to finish that sentence.

But then...SOMEONE'S going to need to fly these things. But, that'll come later.

>You can now buy the ‘Basic Hangar’ in the HQ Upgrade List!
>You now have access to a Basic Fighter craft! You can take this along with you on select missions. Having a fighter can, obviously, be a major boon, but you’ll need to sacrifice some of your pay to get it on the field and gassed up, and what’s more, unlike you yourself, Sal won’t bother to save it (or any other vehicle you get) if it looks like it’s going up in flames. Upgrade possibilities for this will come at a later date, but you will need to spend money or materials to do so.
>You now have access to a Basic Transport! Same rules with Sal above apply, as well as the upgrades. Talk to Owlia for more information later!

“Oh, by the way, you got a letter from the Care House a couple cycles ago!” Lorelei says out of nowhere. “I completely forgot, but they caught me, and wanted me to tell you as soon as I could. Check your mail. That, aaand that guy, Zander? He’s been sniffing around, too. Those guys over at Interdiction are long gone, but I think you knew that? Well, if you didn’t, now you do. Let’s see, is there anything else I’m missing…?”

We're a little too tired to properly dig into anything we've missed.

How many people/stuff can the copter carry?
>>
>>2730559
As it stands, it looks like it can carry 4 comfortably. Entryway is tall enough that stuff about as big as a double door fridge could fit in and you'd still have a touch of maneuvering room. You can upgrade this.

Do you guys remember what we were saving our motes for? I think we intended to build a lab for Owlia. Or is that what we begged together from the others before this job? I can't remember what our plan is but let's not jump on the hangar immediately just cause it's new

“Whatever it is, it can wait,” you decide. “I’m going back to my apartment, and I’m going to take a nice, long sleep.”

“Aww, okay!” She doesn’t even sound that disappointed. “We’ll make a spa day soon or something! You DO sound beat.” You can’t even pretend to not be interested. You’re no prissy sort, but the idea of just unwinding sounds VERY appealing.

Give her a gentle nod and a smile, you agree, and you shortly part ways, with Lorelei’s mulling on possible names for the transport in the background as you walk away.

Like heck you’re calling the the thing ‘Lovestorm’.

When you get back, you heave a gentle sigh at the look of your little apartment. Not that long ago you were thinking of upgrading. Still might should, one of these days. A simple sandwich is fixed, glass of juice drank, and you’re flopped in your bed before long, pouring over the digital letter via tablet screen.

[/i] Dear Ms. Styles, [/i]

We of the Care House are pleased to mention that you’ve been the topic of considerable interest for a number of our wards, and they have expressed a desire to remain in communication with you. We humbly ask you to take up this simple responsibility to assist in grooming one (or more!) of our youth to be the next great earners of the Intersection! The individuals in question are:

Noran Fairsun (and Mewla). Race: Human/Demon, Fae
Harpsicorie Laemuul. Race: Lamia
Korak D’vatch. Race: Demon
Tami Flaff. Race: Sheepkin

If you choose to accept this, you may select one or more (but no more than three) to remain in communication with; considering your unique job, we are willing to waive the traditional one-letter-per-week requirement, in exchange for allowing the child an extended stay whenever you return from a job.

Please notify below if this opportunity intrigues you, and if so, what children may interest you! (The senders have been notified of your reading this message. You have three (3) cycles to respond as of opening this letter.)

Hm. That’s...something. But you’ll sleep on it first. No use deciding something so soon. Your head hits the pillow, and you’re out before long.

When you open your eyes, however...something’s off. Something is very, very off. There’s...nothing. And yet- somehow it feels like you’re surrounded...

Almost immediately, the feeling of being surrounding fades, but there’s a warmth...it’s familiar. Very familiar. You feel like your head’s floating in clouds, but…

“You’re so familiar…” What?!

You want to whirl around, to face who’s talking, but...something’s stopping you. You’re still on your back, and your eyes can’t move, can’t look at anything that’s not straight ahead.

And then another voice. “Wait...do I know you…?” They both sound swampy- muddled. As though they’re underwater. You can barely understand them as is.

A third voice, incomprehensible, says something else, but it fades out, and before you can say anything, that warmth fades…

...and you wake up. It’s not quite waking up from a bad dream, but you’re...thoroughly confused. You’ve had plenty of dreams, but nothing quite like that before.

At any rate, you ARE feeling a bit more rested. A mental thrum in your head, however, and a slight lightness of being tells you that dues are...well, due. Mentally focusing inwards, you do find that your proverbial pocket has been lightened.

>Current Total Motes: 77.60 LMotes.

Great. Well, at least it’s quick and painless. Question now, is...what to do? Your friends and workmates are likely off doing their own thing for a while. Might could drop in on them. Or, you could keep it light, just wander around, see what you can see. Or maybe look into handling some personal business. That message said you had 3 cycles to respond, after all. Thinking about it, it’s probably a good idea to see what Izumi’s up to. She wanted to ‘renew’ herself, which you know just means she’s trying to straighten herself out after last job. You’d like to think your words back there got through to her, but you’ve no way of telling without talking to her personally. Hopefully, being back on familiar ground might help things out.

After breakfast, and a bit of old-fashioned loafing around, you make your way downstairs to her apartment.

A knock on the door of her apartment, and it takes a few moments for her to answer- to your surprise, she looks fairly well, apart from the slight look of confusion and slump to her posture. “Ah. Miranda? I wasn’t expecting to see you for a couple of days. Something wrong?”

You shake your head. “No, just wanted to see if you were doing okay.”

She sighs, blowing a strand of hair away from in front of her head. “Well, I requested a talk with Sal, who’s agreed- when it suits him.” The look on her face is one of obvious dislike, but you both know full well he’ll get to her when he gets to her. “Aside from that, I’ve a great deal of meditation to engage in; something to help soothe myself. I SORELY hope I’ll actually be privy to all details important to me next mission. That said...” And here she puts on a small, yet sincere smile. “Thank you. It means a great deal that you came by to ask after me. My library work will probably hold me for some time, so I can use that spare time to unwind.”

“Not a problem,” you admit.

Thinking about it, you’ve got just the thing to get her attention. “Y’know, we didn’t really get to know Lorelei’s new ‘friends’.”

“True,” she admits. “I have to say, not entirely sure what drove her to do such a thing...but I find it hard to oppose, so long as she did not force them.”

“Either way, they’re here now- and we still need to put those bots through their paces if they’re going to be part of the team.” You give her a pointed look, matched with a small grin. “Can’t imagine anyone else I’d pick first. Up for it later?”

She huffs out a laugh, but nods. “It’ll be quite interesting to see the depths of their combat ability. Programming is no substitute for true willpower- whether they have that or not remains to be seen.” You have to agree with that, and...well, phew. Part of you was worried she wouldn’t be interested. It’s just that which makes you more confident in saying the rest. “Actually, if you want to feel good about yourself sooner than later...I was thinking about stopping by the Care House.”

“Oh? Really? I recall you’d had some children following you around a bit ago…” A small grin rises on her face. “Perhaps you’re developing some actual maternal instincts?”

Oh what the- “Yeaaaaaah...no. I just got this message, and-” And there you freeze, because...heck, why ARE you doing this? You just felt like it one day, and it hadn’t really hurt anything, so why not? But then...hmmm…

“Well, regardless of what your excuse is,” Ugh, that smile... “if you’re going there...then I suppose I might not mind coming with you. It’s been quite some time since I’ve been around there.” Oh, right. Early on she’d done some volunteer stuff for the Care House, just for the sake of. Hadn’t heard of her doing it in a while, though. “I’ll be heading to the library later, however.” she notes. Fair enough. “So then, I’m curious- just who’s caught your eye, hm?”

That’s a good question, and as you bring out your phone to respond to the message, you figure now’s as good a time as any to answer.

(Example, if Noran and Harpiscorie both get five votes and Tami and Korak get three, neither of the latter will be picked. If Noran gets five, Harpiscore gets four, and Korak gets three, Korak will not be picked. In the event of a tie, it'll be a roll off.)

> Noran Fairsun (and Mewla). Kid with the fairy? Built in team, it seems like. Could be a pretty good duo if they’re trained right.

Harpsi could either be a pretty good stealth or magical option if she could get over her shyness.

Korak is pretty gung ho about Outgoer work, if a bit excitable. Hopefully he'll cool his jets with some experience under his belt.

Tami sounds like she could come up with a few ideas and plans. Hopefully she'll be able to get Korak to focus, and bring Harpsi out of her shell.

Korak is a little excitable for my tastes, but he is at least enthusiastic. If we can temper that fire with experience, I suspect he'll make a solid Enforcer.
Sneaksy-Smartsy are an important aspect of a well rounded team. Though lamia's tails have to be pretty powerful; she could go pretty much any direction. Maybe she'll even done heavy armor and a reforged spear Maybe once she gets the hang of things she'll lose the stutter. And I'll admit I have a soft for lamias.

It’s not exactly what you’d expect to say, but as you consider your brief interactions with the kids in question, a few stand out to you. “Well...first that I think of is Harpsicorie. If this is that shy lamia girl- and I’m pretty sure it is- I have to give her props for putting herself out like this. Takes a lot to do that. Much less decide to go for this kind of job.”

“Really?” Izumi at least seems interested, judging by the looks she gives you. “A shy young thing trying to be an Outgoer? Very curious. I hope she’s not afraid to defend herself…”

There IS that possible issue. Might have to bring that up, although… “Well, she might end up a Courier. Could help her get out of her shell without threatening her life too much.”

“True,” Izumi agrees. “But anyway, you said ‘first’, so…”

“Right. Second one is this Tami Flaff kid. Sheep girl, likes puppets, I’m pretty sure. Not sure why she’s not looking into puppeteering, but if she’s that curious, I won’t turn her away. At least, not for looking into it.” Really, you’d think she’d be more interested in acting or perhaps something related to the arts, but...apparently not.

“That’s...curious. Puppets? How would you be able to use tho-” Izumi starts, but then stops herself as she mulls the idea over. “Well, perhaps if you had some type of method to control them from a distance, they might be workable, but…”

“There was a light in her eyes whenever she talked- I think she’s more clever than she likes to let people know,” you admit. She was often one that asked about ‘talking enemies down’ or ‘but what if you could make someone go over there?’ during your little day tour. “Thinking on it, I think I see why she might be interested…”

“I’d like to see for myself, really.” Izumi admits as you both board your bikes. “Well, who else?”

“Just one more,” you confirm. “Although, technically, it’s two. They call themselves Noran and Mewla. One’s this part-demon kid, the other’s a fairy. I think they’ve got some kind of bond, y’know?”

She nods. “Ahhh. I see. So why them?”

You shrug. “Natural team. I think they could be a pretty potent combination if they’re trained right, even aside from whatever experiences they might already have together.” Red roars as you start her up. “Anyway, follow me, and let’s get this show on the road.”

Her own smaller bike revvs in response. “Right behind you.”

The drive isn’t too long, but as you walk up to the desk where Mrs. June, as always, is sitting. Seeing you, she breaks into a beaming smile. “Well! Didn’t think we’d be seeing you again so soon! And you brought a friend?”

“Just here to accompany her,” Izumi waves off.

“Oh, of course, of course.” Mrs. June nods. “Now, this wouldn’t happen to be about that little mail we sent, would it?”

“It is,” you admit. “I was thinking I’d just tell you in person along with the email. Of the ones that wanted me, I’m picking Harpsicorie Laemuul, Tami Flaff, and Noran and Mewla.”

“Oh, that’s great! I know they’ll be happy to hear that!” She immediately starts typing. “You know you didn’t HAVE to come around immediately…”

You shrug. “Well, I DID just get back from a job, so…eh.”

“Oh! How sweet!” She grins. “Do you want me to send for them right now, then? Or maybe would you want until the end of the day’s lessons? Do you have rooms set up for them?”

“Rooms?” You question.

“Well, yes! We did say EXTENDED stay! That includes overnight!” Oh. That...actually makes sense. Oy.

Well...all things considered, you’ve got room in your place. A bit. Or maybe Lorelei wouldn’t mind putting them up. Could even have them in the barracks, once you get them...there WAS a Sleeping Quarters section you could buy and have them whip up, hopefully...barring that, well...could just get cots, sheets and all that. You’ve got enough motes to spare for now. “Eh, we’ve got room, don’t worry. You can send them down now.”

“Great!” Saying that, she quickly gets on the intercom, and before very long, there’s three (technically four) very interested little kids in front of you. Harpsicorie seems almost baffled, while Tami and Noran both seem excited. A tiny, pink light flitters on the top of Noran’s head, buzzing back and forth but never straying too far away.

“Weeell, you’ve my thanks fer pickin’ us, miss!” Tami is the first to speak up, with her bull puppet as usual. “I s’pect we’ll have a lot ta learn from you!”

“Yeah, uh, thanks!” Noran seems happy enough, and he starts to open his mouth to say something else- just before the pink light darts close and seems to hover in front of you for a second. Noran, for his part, looks mortified. “Agh, no, Mew!” It then seems to zip around both you and Izumi before racing back to Noran, settling near his ear. “Oh, sorry! She’s, uh… she’s protective…”

“It’s fine,” Izumi reassures. “But I believe Miranda here has some questions for you all...after all, I’m sure she wants to know all about you, right, Miranda?”

Well, maybe not ALL about them yet, but some vitals can’t go amiss… “Just tell me the basics about yourselves, huh? We’ll figure out the rest as we go along.”

cont.
>>
>>2749504

“Okay!” Tami, again, is the first to speak. “Welllll, Tami here likes playin’ and actin’, and likes drawin’ stuff and figurin’ how people act and stuff. Uhhh….she likes just about anythin, kinda, but loves fruit, an’ don’t like hard audiences none. We likes to make people laugh, o’ course!”

“Oh, well, me and Mewla like exploring, and climbing, and dancing, and having fun, I guess. And fighting. But not mean fightin’, just...y’know, kinda fightin’.” You’re not quite sure what ‘kinda fightin’ is, honestly. “Uh...and we like meats and stuff. And I don’t like skeletons. And Mewla doesn’t like it when people yell at me or anything. She gets mad really easily.” Oy. These two might be more of a handful than you thought.

At any rate, that only leaves the one...who’s had her head down all this time, and only just lifts it when she realizes that she’s the last one to speak. “Oh! Uhhhh...um, I, uh, I like to, uh… write thingsssssss, I guessssss? A-and I dunno what elth…uh...I’ll eat anything. Mostly. But, uh… yeah. I, uh...I don’t like talking...or, or having too many people look at me...I guesssssss... ”

...Hm. Yeah, these kids are gonna be...interesting. But, first thing’s first.

You know, these guys, including Korak, all kind of remind me of some of the characters we met back when we were working with the Knights of the New Moon.

Tami has the same sort of charismatic tendencies of Geegee...
Noran has the sensitive big guy role, just like Basil...
Harpsicorie has the soft spoken shy mage bit ala Sorina...
And Korak is basically a short Adel with red skin and horns.

>Wonder how you'll influence these kids...
I believe that Miranda will inadvertently scare them into becoming sensible, reasonable people who realize that a civilian career is the sane choice.

She is going to sound like a monster when she shrug and tell them that killing people is just a job and it's pretty fun, and dig herself into a hole tying to explain why she works for the bad guys to kill good guys. Izumi should find it enlightening at least. I don't think Miranda has tried to talk to someone about it who won't stop asking 'why' and expect an answer. I'm 50/50 on whether or not Miranda understands social cues and that kids aren't simply small adults. Also when she realizes that she has to put up with it and can't just shoo them off without repercussions will be fun.
>>
>>2751744
With the morality framework of the Intersection, I think that the kids will be more concerned with costs and benefits, especially if they aren't going back to the worlds they leave messes on.
The Dealmakers would have had the importance of profit drilled into them as a requisite for survival.
>>
>>2751744
As we've been recently reminded, Miranda and Izumi have been 'agreeing to disagree' on morality matters for ages. Miranda isn't unaware of the perception of her stance on morality.

>>2751817
>The Dealmakers would have had the importance of profit drilled into them as a requisite for survival.
In a general sense, maybe. But a heavily profit-focused approach to life isn't conductive to long-term relationships, and very few people become Outgoers. Most will be getting work in the Intersection itself.
And the personalized taxes disentivise hoarding wealth.
>>
>>2751744
>>2751817
Miranda has already spent time with these ones and they're still interested, plus based on our interactions with those two new kids way back Miranda isn't one to traumatuise children deliberately.
Will be a fun winding down session while we prep for the next job. Robots need to be calibrated! Kids educated! Glyphs and gear updated!

Sound like a monster?

Miranda IS monstrous, by mortal morals and abilities. I'm pretty sure she's played the role of actual monster more than once.

> I'm 50/50 on whether or not Miranda understands social cues and that kids aren't simply small adults.

If she stops to think about it, probably, but then she still doesn't know how to handle them other than as small adults.

We are not that socially inept. We just don't like to socialize a lot.
>>
>>2752156
>> I'm 50/50 on whether or not Miranda understands social cues
Social may not be her specialization, but she's far from bad at it. She just avoids it when possible. In fact, the whole choose-what-to-wear-on-a-mission thing is an entirely social mechanic.
>>
>>2752177
Did you not read the previous thread where she interacted with children?
>>
>>2752362
Well, back in MGFH #46, there was a part where Handler said she had problems dealing with a large group of kids, like at the cafeteria. Nothing about having problems working with two or three of them, though.

(That reminds me, I wonder how that kid who had us sign his drawing of us? Him and that dragon girl with the bow on her head were the two I remember the most at the cafeteria.)
>>
>>2752362
Social in general. Dealing with children is very different from normal social interactions. And she still wasn't bad with the kids, just not good with them and was rather uncomfortable.

>>2752432
