Isn't she just an assistant? As the professor shouldn't Aspen have the final say on what he wants to do with them? I mean we are the field researcher. A pokemon will probably show more of it's traits in pokemon battles and on a journey across the entire region than in some lab

I don't get this. If you said Cole then sure but the anons know that Nibdew only lost because of bad rolls. It's actually pretty impressive that he managed the tie against a pokemon that had type advantage with those bad rolls and the fact that he wasn't really trying in the beginning of the battle

Pff, for an assistant Sequoia certainly seemed to wear the pants between the two of them. She was the one we and Aspen had to convince to let us take one of the starters with us by promising to do tasks and such. And it’s not that I dislike water starters, it’s just that there was usually a fire or grass starter in each Gen I preferred. Charmander (Narrowly) beat Squirtle, Cyndaquil (Very narrowly) beat Totodile, Treecko beat Mudkip, Turtwig beat Piplup, and beyond that I can’t say since I haven’t played a mainline Pokémon game since Diamond. In this case, I preferred Fevine to Nibdew, though honestly it was a pretty close race between all three for me.

He assigned us as his field researcher. That's something you don't really have to go to school for like the other professions so it should be fine. I also don't think the lab would work all too well for a pokemon. A normal animal? Yes as they pretty much work on pure instinct but a pretty much every pokemon is much smarter than that. It would work for a little bit, sure, but they wouldn't make any large breakthroughs and they'd probably finish all of their tests quickly. Pokemon just aren't meant to be in labs. There's no way one can accommodate all the incredibly varied species especially when you factor in evolution. They're a race meant for battle so you can't really study them properly in a lab

Uuuuh have you read my other posts? I said that I didn't want mulitple starters and would prefer to have Kreep over Fevine. I was just playing devil's advocate and explaining why it could happen

As far as examining them in a controlled lab environment, I meant less the behavioural observation (Though some of that as well) and more in depth examinations of their anatomy and the like. If they treat Pokémon anything like they do animals here, they’d probably want to examine feeding preferences, bone structure, x-rays, yadda yadda, none of which we’re able to carry out, at least to any scientifically accurate degree. Besides, they might have plans to examine them in their starting form, then work towards evolving them so they can re-examine them, and then evolve them to their final form and examine them further.

While it is one of the most recently settled regions, it’s still been settled for a few decades now, and if they’re handing out pokedexes and the like they’ve probably at least identified and examined almost all of the Pokémon native to the region, barring these Cryptid Pokémon and Pokémon that live in regions that humans don’t normally have access to. Fevine, Nibdew and Cubcoal were assumedly some of the few species that lived in environments largely inhospitable to humans, and as such hadn’t been examined in-depth before. Sequoia made it sound like they had to pay a lot of money to acquire these three, and had to have them shipped in from all different corners of Maho, so they’re probably much more useful research subjects then commonly found Pokémon, which they’ve assumedly already examined before. There probably are other Pokémon in the region that they could study, but that would mean spending plenty more money, and probably having them captured and shipped from some other unpleasant part of Maho.

If you use the logic that because they have pokedex entries of all these pokemon that means they already have a basic grasp on them then that reasoning could easily extend to the starters too.


I doubt that Aspen is the only or first professor to get his hands on them. There's bound to be more labs in this region and Calibar is the town farthest from all of the locations you usually get the starters so it stands to reason that they should already have most of the anatomical data you mentioned

And while Claribar is pretty distant from the regions these Pokémon come from, Pokémon labs are still fairly rare, right? I assume that acquiring their own data was there original intention but now that they found someone who's brave (or stupid) enough to travel Maho they could easily see it as a golden opportunity to do what most professors never think about or get the chance to and get some field data. And yes usually labs are pretty rare but Maho is such a dangerous and mysterious place and considering it's relative recent discovery there must be more labs than average around the region or else the fact that we have all these dex entries doesn't make sense. Imagine how scary it would be to live here. Well, going off of how they’ve read so far, the dex entries seem to be based on observations of behaviour, rather then biological observations, so it seems likely they were studied in the wild, or in an enclosure of some variety, rather then under lab conditions. The only entry observing a biological function thus far is the Munkit, which are, well, the vermin Pokémon of this region, and would be hilariously easy for Aspen of Sequoia to capture and subsequently study. (As a side note, this has been a fun debate, even if it doesn’t seem likely we’re going to come to a conclusion soon. And we’ll have to ask what Pokémon aspect Aspen specializes in, I’m kind of curious.)

I guess, but even aesthetics aside, just having a prehistoric Pokémon has got to net you all kinds of swag with everyone else. Plus it’s guaranteed to be at least rock type, which is pretty good with what we’ve already got. Even if we don’t want to use it for battling, Aspen would probably have a field day with a revived prehistoric Maho Pokémon, if we sent it back to the lab.
