Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted. No more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought.

When we last left Baldr, he and Julian the mage, along with Monroe and Grimace’s squads were going off to investigate the cause of the fog.

“Is this your first assignment?” you ask Julian breaking the silence.

Julian turns to you and from deep inside his hood covered head gives you an indecipherable look before shaking his head and answering “For the military, Yes. Is this my first mission ever? No.”

Another silence fills the air before you attempt to change the subject “So, if this turns out to be a God, how are we going to deal with him?”

“It would not be wise to discuss it here.” Julian says as he turns his head away from you and forward again. “Besides, our target is here.” He says as he points ahead through a break in the fog.

Through the break, you could see and old man whittling away at a fishing pole, smoking on a pipe. As you stare, the old man calls out his voice strangely echoing all around you. “Come, take a seat. I’ve been expecting you.”

>Do as he says, If this is the god he could have killed you long ago.

You start forward a few steps before Julian’s hand shoots forward to grab you pulling you back. “Are you insane sergeant?! This is obviously a trap!”

“This whole fog is a trap; if this god had wanted to kill us he would have done it already. There is no harm in humoring him now.” Pulling yourself away, you stride into the clearing of fog.

As you approach the man, you start to notice several oddities; the most glaring of which was his hair. The man had an impressive beard hanging down off of his face, while his head remained mostly bald saving for a few sparse hairs. While this wouldn’t be odd normally, this man’s hair didn’t come to an end. As his hairs lengthened they became less solid until they simply dissipated into fog which curled away. Coming to a stop before him, the man gestures to another nearby tree stump, upon which you seat yourself as he speaks.

“Well, aren’t you a brave one, I see that your fellows lack that courage,” he says as he points his pipe at the squads who were slowly edging their way into the clearing, weapons at the ready.

“Well they’re justified in their fear seeing as they think you are a god,”

“hmph, I see,” the old man snorts.

“And are you?”

The old man gives you a quizzical expression before nodding his head “I am,”

One of the approaching soldiers falls to his knees and begins a loud prayer, which is cut short by Sergeant Monroe slapping the bowing solider on the back of the head and dragging him to his feet.

“What are you a god of,” you ask staring into the god’s mole spotted and wrinkled face.

The god draws deeply from his pipe, and then exhales a large cloud of, not smoke but fog that swirls out to join the other clouds. “Weather, well I used to be or maybe I still am?” the god becomes pensive for a moment before turning his attention back to you “No, I guess I’m not a god anymore, not without worshipers I’m not.”

“So you’ve retired and taken up fishing have you,” you say pointing to the nearly finished rod.

The god barks a laugh before his face turns sober and chill permeates the air, “Retire, yes it would seem that way, but no god ever retires of its own free will. A god can only be retired by something or someone else.” His clear and bright blue eyes fixed on yours through the helmet and you find it impossible to hold his gaze.

“What caused you to be retired?” you ask pulling your eyes away.

The seemed to get even colder as the god answered “You did.” Recoiling from the god at his sudden accusation, you nearly fall off of the stump, “Well, not you personally no, your queen and her kingdom did. Killing my priest, burning down my holy sites, erasing my name from history, and scattering my followers to the wind.” The god’s anger caused his fog hair to deepen in hue from white, to gray, to swirling black storm clouds.

“I assume that is why you have captured us here then, for revenge.”

“Yes my boy, that is why you and your friends are here and that is why you will stay here. Until such time as you starve to death, or I can find something, or someone to kill you all. Maybe those rebel upstarts might be interested to hear where they can find their missing friends.” The old man muses taking another puff from his pipe.
>Warn him that you are expected in the capital soon and that any further delay will soon bring scouts and aid to them.
>Convince him that his actions will accomplish nothing; they will not bring back his followers.
>Take your leave of this vengeful god it is time to make plans to escape.

"There's one thing that sounds strange of your plan to me: you're no longer a god because are no longer followed and are forgotten. Then why kill the first people that could help you reform your following? The satisfaction from revenge is ephemeral, the possibility to gain back your position much more concrete. Your cult, along others, was not dispersed out of hate but rather to seek political stability. Seeing your power manifest, and considering how the tables have turned, I believe this is a opportunity.
Of course I am a mere sergeant, but I don't think there's a reason for higher-ups to refuse."

Were he truly a god, would he not have prevented his followers being scattered, his temples destroyed? These are the wimperings and tantrums of a child, not a being of power. Has he even considered changing with the times and attempting to merge into the kingdom?

“So even a god can be a fool.” You say aloud, causing the old man’s cloud eyebrows to rise.

“What do you mean by that boy,” the god grumbles his voice gaining a dangerous edge.

“In all your years of life, watching the lives of thousands of mortals pass by, you have failed to learn anything. Look at what you are doing. You have been sitting here ever since your religion was destroyed plotting revenge, and taking out your anger on any member of the kingdom who passes by. You could have moved on, found new followers, created new life. Instead you have taken the fools route and made the same mistake your followers did in opposing the queen.” You rise to your feet to stare down at the god, “You are no god old man simply a child throwing a tantrum at the destruction of fools. Pull yourself together. It is time to stop being a wailing brat, chasing the ephemeral satisfaction of revenge, and grow up.

The god looks down in stunned silence at your words. Behind you comes the sound of a dozen intakes of breath as the squads gasp at your boldness.

The old man’s face darkens as the clouds on his face turn black. His lips curl into a sneer as his eyes stare daggers into yours. You can feel the pressure in the area rise, and the air grows cold as ice. Inside your armor, your muscles tense, preparing for the god’s retaliation.

Then the god disperses into mist leaving a cloud in the shape of a man where he sat, before the fog begins to close in on you again.

As you stare at the spot where the god was sitting, Julian’s voice booms out as he approaches “Are you out of your mind! That old man could have killed both you and us with a wave of his hand and you decide to insult him to his face!” Julian’s hands ball into fists as he storms up to stand in front of you “Do you have a brain in that skull of yours, or just empty air.”

Julian’s hands relax uncurling “You are right Baldr, the god has been dealt with and now is not the time for a squabble.” He says as he slaps you on the shoulder before returning his hands into his robes. Julian then closes his eyes for a few moments and when he opens them he says “Well, it seems that with the god’s leaving, he can no longer maintain his infinite loop. If we follow the road now, we can simply walk our way out of this fog.” Turning back to the rest of the squads Julian continues “Well gentlemen we have no time to waste, let’s report back,” and turning on his heel he walks back in the direction of camp.

Following on his heels you and the rest of the squads head after Julian. Once closer together Monroe leans over to you and whispers “Sergeant, the next time you decide to insult a god, make sure I’m not standing anywhere nearby.”

“Noted Sergeant, noted,” you nod as you return to camp. Once there a quick debriefing with the Colonel ensued, blissfully short Julian simply said “The god has left the area; we can head out of the fog and to the capital now.” Mysteriously the Colonel asked nothing more from either the squads or Julian, he simply nodded saying “Good, gentlemen inform the rest of the squads to get ready to get up, we are moving out.” Saluting, you and the rest of the squads head out and tell everyone you can find. A short while later, the train was lined up and ready to march. Closed in tight and hands on shoulders, the company moved out with Julian’s rain pocket on point with you and the other squads heading out of the fog bank.

As you walk, you begin to notice subtle differences. The other men on point were drenched from head to toe, while you were bone dry, not a fleck of water on your armor. Feeling thirsty, you reach for your canteen pressing it to your lips, you drink deeply, only to have the water run along the outside of your lips and down the sides of your face. Wiping the water away, your try again with the same results. You then fully enclose your lips around the neck, only to have the water squeeze itself out the sides of your mouth. You turn the canteen upside down and attempt to pour some into its cap, only to have no water come out. Looking inside the canteen you can see the water shifted to the opposite side, as far away from you as it could get. Absent mindedly stepping into a puddle your foot squishes down into soft mud. Looking down you could see the muddy water pulled back in an oval around your foot. As the march went on and your attempts to drink water became more frantic, the choked off laughs, and snickers of the other men became louder and more frequent.

>Shrug this off and keep going, once the fun stops you should be able to drink.

There is only one thing that could have placed a curse like this on you; that damned old man. Not being able to drink could be dangerous, especially on a march like this. With the fog starting to thin around you, you head over to Julian to see what can be done about your curse.

“Julian, I have a problem. I think that old man put a curse on me; I can’t seem to drink any water. Any time I try to the water just slips and runs away from my mouth.”

Julian regards you with a blank face for a moment before a smile spreads on his lips, “So, messing with a god has consequences now does it?” He says with smug satisfaction. “Well let me just get a feel for this curse and I’ll see what I can do.”

Falling silent Julian thrusts his hand out and lets it hover in front of your chest. After a few moments he withdraws his hand and addresses you once more. “You’re in more trouble than I thought. Well this curse while not very strong is bound to you quite tightly. I won’t be able to lift the curse from you until we reach the capital, then I will have the necessary equipment to treat it but until then you will have to live with the curse.”

“How am I supposed to make it on the march without water?!” you ask indignantly.

“Well, the seeing as the curse is weak, it will have a hard time manipulating dirty, or extremely diluted water. So you can wait for the capital, drink your own urine, suck some water out of a mud puddle, or have everyone spit in your canteen.

“Would milk or some kind of juice work?”

“Possibly,” Julian replies thoughtfully “As long as whatever you drink is concentrated enough, you should be able to drink it. But good luck finding milk or some kind of juice in this caravan.”

While Julian says this, you try one last time to get water into your mouth, sticking some cloth into your canteen and soaking up the water inside, you pull the cloth free of the canteen to see it losing all the water it had soaked up. The cloth shedding water like a duck as you quickly attempt to stuff the rag into your mouth. By the time the cloth reaches your mouth however it is dry as a bone, and the attempt leaves you spitting and sputtering. Your latest attempt leads to yet more laughs from the troops around you, even Julian covers his mouth with a hand in an attempt to cover his smile.

“Look Sergeant, we are coming out of the fog now and if you look really hard at the horizon there, you should just be able to see the top of the Queen’s tower in the capital. We’ll get there by the end of today, you can wait if you like or you can find some heavily diluted liquid, your choice.”

Looking to the horizon and using your helmet’s zoom you can see that Julian’s words ring true you could see the cone shaped roof of a tower far in the distance. Weighing your options now, you decide to.

>Just wait this curse out on the prisoner wagon; you’re sure the Colonel would forgive you for not being on point due to the curse.

Simply turning on your heel, you walk toward the caravan and its multitude of wagons and carts. All the while the troops on point watched anticipation fading.

On your walk back through the caravan, you are spied out by the Colonel who shouts “Sergeant Baldr, what are you doing back here. I thought I assigned you to point?”

“You did sir, but I have been cursed with the inability to consume any water. It was confirmed by Julian sir. He said that he wouldn’t be able to heal me until we reached the capital, so I came back here to ride one of the carriages to avoid dying of thirst.”

The Colonel lays suspicions eyes on you before slowly nodding, “Alright Sergeant climb aboard the healers wagon.” He says gesturing to one of the nearby wagons, before turning his attention to an aid.

Following the Colonel’s advice you clamber into the back of the healers wagon and sit down among the few crates of healing supplies.

As the train moved toward the capital, the sun climbed steadily higher into the sky, bring the temperature every higher. Sitting inside of the wagon, while less work, seemed no less hot. Even with the canvas cover over the top of it the heat was becoming unbearable. Sweating profusely from the heat of the day, you soon become thirsty, your throat becoming as dry as a desert and scratchier than a cactus.

Spending most of the ride in a haze of dehydration, you barely notice when the wagon comes to a halt. Lying on the bed of the cart you look up to see Julian poke his head over the lip of the wagon’s end eyes searching until they fall upon your withered form. Smiling, Julian pulls himself up and into the wagon and kneels down beside you.

“Well I think you’ve learned your lesson,” he says pulling a canteen from underneath his robes and placing it in your hands which you barely find strength left in to bring the canteen to your mouth. No water flows into your mouth until at a snap of Julian’s fingers the water falls and drains into your parched mouth. Gulping down what you can, Julian continues to speak. “In the future it would be wise to refrain from insulting people of far greater power than yourself. Next time it may cost you more than a few hours of suffering and some embarrassment.” He says as he starts to rise to his feet. Turning away, he begins to clamber out of the wagon.

You turn your body enough to lock eyes with Julian as he descends the wagon “So this was a lesson, huh? You nearly kill a man just to teach him not to be reckless.” You attempt a laugh that comes out half laugh, half cough. “Sounds more like petty revenge than a lesson to me.”

Julian hardly acknowledges your words as he jumps to the ground. “Best get on your feet quickly Sergeant, else you’ll miss all the sights and sounds of the Capital,” he says as walks around the cart and out of view.

Spending a few more moments draining the rest of the water in the canteen, you collect yourself the best you can. The pounding in your head was beginning to subside and strength was returning to your body. You rise to your feet and clamber out the back of the wagon. Once outside you turn to face the front of the train only to see the massive stone blocks of the capital’s outer most wall. The towering edifice was seven man heights tall with defensive towers dotting its expanse as it stretched on in both directions. Wending its way in through a massive gate was the baggage train, its flow slowed to bring the ordered chaos into the city with the least amount of crushed toes.

Making your way forward though the mess of wagons and soldiers, you squeeze through into the city. You had always heard stories, but never actually seen the capital with your own eyes. Right as you entered the city tall tenement buildings rose to meet you, each building rising up to two third the height of the city’s wall. Beyond them, down the main avenue you could see the cloth roofs of market stalls filling a square up ahead. From the square wafted scents of foods, spice, and perfumes of lands both foreign and domestic. Your heart pulled you ahead yearning to see the city but as you fought your way to the front of the train, The Colonel called out to you “Sergeant Baldr, a word.”

Reigning yourself in, you turn and report to the Colonel sitting astride his horse. “Sir,” you say coming to attention in front of him “Sergeant, at first light tomorrow you are to report to me at the city garrison headquarters. There is a matter that we must discuss. Until that time however, you are free to join my troops on leave. Now you are dismissed.”

Saluting him again, you take your leave of the Colonel. Looking up at the darkening sky you smile. It was time to start your leave in the capital.

Despite your yearning to see that capital, you are kept in check by your dehydrated body and its clawing need for rest. Moving through the surge of soldiers, you head out onto one of the capital’s main thoroughfares. Outside of many buildings along the street hung a sign “Queen’s Pillow Inn” you mutter as you walk in through the door. Inside, you find yourself standing small and well maintained barroom. Only two people were seated at one of the five tables inside. Upon seeing you in your armor, the short, fat man behind the bar scurries out and comes up to you.

“Good sir, are you solider perhaps?” the man asks, a slightly worried look on his face.

>No, just a traveler, who understands that most roads are not safe ones.

“Sergeant.”

“Uh, yes um, Sergeant,” the innkeeper struggles with his words as he asks “How can I help you?”

“I want a room for the night, a bath, and a meal.”

“Ah yes and will it just be you for the evening?” the man asks as he leans over to look behind you.

Frowning down at the man you respond “Yes it is just me for the night.”

Relaxing some, the man looks back up at you “Our room rate is two gold per night and the bath and gold will run you another gold piece.”

Reaching into your satchel you pull out three gold pieces, at the sight of the money the innkeeper exhales and his nervous attitude melts away, as a smile fills his face. “Well then, right this way Sergeant.” With the promise of money, the man tends to your every need that night.

When your head finally hit the pillow of the soft bed, you fell asleep quickly, contented with a full belly and clean body.

>Congratulations on surviving your trip to the Capital gentlemen, you have earned another perk. Select one of the following:
> Dogged Pursuer: No enemy can escape your wrath. Foes have a harder time disengaging you in combat and as long as your target is in sight you will have a +2 to run them down as well as +1 dice damage when you finally catch them.

>Upstart: You don’t like to be looked down on. Whenever you face a person of higher status (rank, station, fame, etc.) than you, you gain a +2 on all skill checks, and a +1 to your dice damage if you engage in combat.

>Commanding Voice: CHARGE! Your words will be heard over the loudest of noises and when directly giving orders, the recipients of those orders gain a +2 to their rolls. You also gain +1 when intimidating others.

+1 to intimidation is too good to pass up.

>Commanding Voice

While Dogged Pursuer looks nice, I think Commanding Voice will be better for actual commanding our gobbos.

>Commanding Voice perk added

With a good night’s rest you wake up in time to don your armor and rush off to meet with the Colonel. Arriving at garrison you are let through and led to a small office. Inside the Colonel was at a desk scribbling away at a piece of parchment, and to his left and right were large stacks of even more parchments. Noticing you enter the Colonel looked up; from the appearance of his bloodshot eyes he hadn’t gotten any sleep last night. “Good morning sir,” you say coming up to stand in front of the Colonel’s desk and giving him a sharp salute.

“Let me get straight to the point Sergeant. Today at the 3rd toll, you are to report here once again. Her majesty the queen has requested an audience with you.”

At his pronouncement, you flinch stunned. The queen wanted to see you? “If I may ask sir…”

“No Sergeant, I have no idea what she wants with you. You can find out during your audience, so arrive here early and ready for a royal audience, now you are dismissed Sergeant.” The Colonel simply looks back down at the parchment in front of him as he dismisses you. Turning about you leave his office and head out of the garrison.

Outside, the city was awaking. Vendors’ calls could be heard through the city as its markets opened and shutters and doors creaked open with the suns rising over the walls. You had some time before your audience and the Capital was at your disposal, the only question was what were you going to do?

First things first, you had to have Selena’s sword looked at by some mages. Asking one of the garrison guards for directions, you quickly find the College. To your surprise the College appeared to be a single manor in the city’s noble district. Heading up to the front door of the manor you knock on its massive wooden door. After your first knock, the door swings open and you step inside. The entrance hall you step into was larger than the whole manor itself, leading you to stagger, slightly disoriented by the unexpected size of the room. Rows of desks ran to the right and left of you, were sat men and women scribbling furiously with their quills at sheets of parchment. Directly in front of you was a middle aged woman sitting at a much larger rounded desk. Looking up at you from over the top a pair of spectacles the woman asks in a disinterested and nasally voice. “Well come to the College of Mages, how can we help you sir.”

Pulling the helmet off of your head, you place it down on the desk “I wish to have this helmet inspected for magical properties.”

“Name?”

“Sergeant Baldr Blooddragon,” at this the woman raises an eyebrow as she scribbles down something on a piece of parchment. “Okay Sergeant Baldr, one moment,” cupping her hand over her mouth the woman speaks, but you hear nothing. Finished speaking she opens up her hand and a ball of distorted air shoots out flying out among the desks. Moments later a man dressed in scholar’s robes comes up from behind you and picks your helmet up from off the desk.

Addressing you the man says “Is this the object in question.”

“Yes,” you respond.

While examining every inch of the helmet the man asks “where did you find this?”

“In a field traveling here from the Resis garrison.”

Closing his eyes the man slides the helmet over his head and stands quiet and still for a few moments. Then removing the helmet he turns to you. “You Sergeant have quite the helmet here. I assume you have already noticed the vision enhancing effects of the helm, but the curious thing I noticed is that it can see through minor illusions with no problem, and even moderate ones appeared cheap and clearly looked like an illusion. Hold on to this one sergeant.” The man said handing the helmet back to you. Next you unsheathed Selenas’s sword.

“I had sent a charcoal rubbing from this sword to the college earlier I was curious about they had meant.”

Taking the sword from you, the man turned it over and over examining the etched in runes. The man’s brow furled as he stared at them. Placing the sword on the desk, he held his hands over it. The sword reacted throwing off a golden light. The man’s face began to turn red and sweat stared to form on the man’s brow as he focused intently on the blade. Suddenly the blade flashed nearly blinding you and causing the man to fall over. Picking himself up, the man turned to you. “Now where did you acquire this Sergeant?” the man asked.

“I acquired it from a captured hero.”

The man’s eyes widened as he whispered “That explains it. Well Sergeant you have a very well-sealed and bound sword. The runes say “May my light guide your way and remind you that I am always at your side” the sword will only activate in the hands of its intended wielder. We could try to break that binding for you sergeant, but it would require a large amount of time and a large donation on your part, around 200 gold.”

“Thank you for the examination, I will consider it.” You say as you only had 94 gold on hand at the moment.

“You are welcome Sergeant,” come back anytime” the man said carefully returning the once again dormant sword.

Back outside some time had passed and you now guessed you had time for about one more thing before you would have to head to your audience with the queen.
