You retire to bed.
---

When I little kid, I was terribly lonely. No one really played with me. I spent all my time by myself, digging in the dirt. I got scolded pretty often for that. What else could I do? There really no-one else I could talk to or play with. The other kids hated me. Or was it that I simply wasn't brave enough to reach out to any of them? I really was a lonely wreck.

Of course, that wasn't the only reason I played in the dirt by myself. I did it so that I could look on the girl with the flowers. She was really pretty. Her hair was long and gracefully curly. Sometimes, she would give me flowers. I would feel less lonely when she did. So I had a pretty strong reason to keep on playing there.

That changed when one day, a different girl approached me. Or was it that I approached her? Memory is such an unreliable thing. She was a much more plain girl. There was nothing particularly endearing about her. Sometimes, I thought that she even despised me. That's why she never talked to me before, right? She even acted out at me when I got her name wrong. Either way, one of us wanted me to stop playing in the dirt by myself. So from then then on, I stopped playing in the dirt.

I don't know if that was the right thing to do. Digging in the dirt really defined me back then as a kid. Maybe it was a good thing. Instead of digging in the dirt like an idiot, I got smarter from reading books. But the girl with the books was never kind to me as the one with the flowers. I sometimes even resented her for making me even lonelier.

Did I choose right, I wonder?

You wake up. Strange dream. You summarise it in your notebook.

Mitsuru and Zorome had already headed to breakfast. You follow them.

---

You finished breakfast relatively quickly. You waited in the commons for Ichigo to finish hers so that you could get to Defence Commander Hachi to talk about the Gutenberg.

She arrives and you both head to Hachi's office in order to talk about the Gutenberg's digging.

---

'Knock knock knock' - or rather, 'tap tap tap', as the little balls of flesh that was Ichigo's fish tapped on the door.

"The door's open." Hachi replies to the knocking. Ichigo heads in and you follow her.

"Code 015 and Code 214. What is your business?"

"Defence Commander - we really ought to check on the Gutenberg."

"The klaxosaur is not actively attacking the Plantation. What are your reasons for suggesting we attack it?"

You contribute to Ichigo's argument checking on the Gutenberg klaxosaur in force.

"It might be tunneling. Tunnelling has always been part of war. There are countless instances of besieging forces attacking fortresses from underground and Plantations are in effect fortresses." You decisively back up Ichigo's argument.

"Exactly." Ichigo shamelessly tries to present your argument as her own. "We ought to be aware of what the Gutenberg is attempting to do."

Hachi pauses and contemplates both of your advice.

"You've both provided highly compelling arguments for expanding surveillance on the Gutenberg. Then, what would you suggest would be the appropriate measures?"

It appeared that Hachi was delegating to you. You internally rejoiced at this turn of events.

Ichigo looked upon you to provide the answer.

Wasn't mentioned that the Plantations have "artillery" or something? In the episode of the floating thing when the kids rescued Goro.
Long range attack/harashement to make the Gutenberg stop digging and, if possible, attack us directly.
This way we can fight it in our terms. We can also use the "suicide bombs" as mines, plant them in the expected attack course of the Gutenberg. It will damage it, or at least kill some minor escorts that it could have.

"Plantation 13 ought to reconnoiter it more closely. Argentea in particular has enough speed to allow it to withdraw should things get rough. We should focus on identifying the enemy and their strengths and weaknesses and getting that information as quickly as possible rather than directly engaging them now." You posit to Hachi.

"Very well. In that case, I will be calling up Code 390 and 666 shortly from their quarters. I will be directing them from the command room. You can accompany me if you wish." Hachi informed you. "Before you two go however, would you rather have me direct the operation as normal or would you like me to attribute this to you two?"

"We need to build trust and that means openness. We don't need to to hide that Ichigo and I came up with the plan."

"Very well, Code 214."

---

Zorome and Miku were called up to the briefing room. A bit of light banter was exchanged between the four of you, mostly consisting of Zorome complaining about why they had to be called up doing their free time. Hachi disclosed that they were going to participate in a mini-operation that Ichigo and you had come up together with. That didn't exactly make Zorome any happier.

"Honestly, getting called up right now, that's just annoying." He complained.

"We have very strong concerns about the Gutenberg and why it is just digging rather than attacking." Ichigo defended your idea.

Zorome conceded to Ichigo's concerns. Miku slyly manages to pass a smug but benign smirk to you as she waited for Zorome to settle down.

Zorome and Miku then made their way to the hangar to sortie out in Argentea.

---

The command room with its personnel was quite a sight. A gigantic display with a panoply of communication channels and countless diagrams far too much to take in all at once, listing information from Magma energy flows to the Plantation's artillery stood before you, above the command console.

Hachi made a brief explanation of it to you then pointed out how to access the Franxx-Plantation audio-visual feed - what Ichigo and you really needed.

"You two may provide instructions to Argentea by yourself via the communications systems for your operation or have me manage it so that you two may observe for future reference. Either option is available to you." Hachi informed you.

In no uncertain terms, you had somehow wormed your way up to a position of authority, if only for a fleeting moment.

"Hm hm." You clear your throat and get into proximity of the command console's microphones. With stilted formality you start, "This is Code 214 speaking. Today, I will be commanding Argentea on its solo reconnaissance mission. Our mission today is to investigate the Gutenberg-class klaxosaur that is loitering around the plantation. Our single goal here to gather intel on what the Gutenberg is doing. Your goal is not to engage it."

You sheepishly pause as Argentea nonchalantly launches out from the hangar.

"Yeah, yeah." Zorome dryly acknowledges over the comms.

You look back behind you for some reassurance.

Ichigo just giggles - not very reassuring.

"Anyways, uh..."

Argentea neared the depression the Gutenberg was last seen at. A great abyss stretched down to the deepest parts of the Earth.

"So, uh, what do I call you?" Zorome just as sheepishly asks you.

"Code 214 will do, I think." It's not like you have a rank or some other title...

"You are to descend to the bottom of shaft as part of your reconnaissance." You give your order.

"Roger that." Miku and Zorome acknowledged in unison.

"I will have Chlorophytum come and stand at the edge for backup." You request that Hachi call for Goro and Ikuno to sortie out. He nods simply and proceeds to call them to the hangar via phone. "Chlorophytum will provide fire supp-"

A very sharp and distinct pain strikes your head. It is like a migraine headache that came out of nowhere.

You soldier on and continue. "Excuse me for the interruption. Chlorophytum will assist Argentea from above and may possibly descend as well if necessary."

---

It took quite a while for Argentea to accomplish. Indeed, you think you missed lunch.

"We're at the bottom now." Zorome told you over the comms. "It's 1.5km deep."

That was exceptionally deep. If you heard right from the other personnel, the magma mines P13 were currently docked to were nowhere near that deep - they remained in the scale of hundreds of metres rather than kilometres.

"What do you see around you?" You enquire Zorome and Miku. Aside from the head flashlight they had, there wasn't any other available source of lighting that would let you see through their video feed - you had to rely on what they saw as a pair.

"It looks like we're in a hub of some sort. There's two tunnels that looks like they were just dug a while ago. The tunnels looks small." Zorome relays to you.

You looked at the tunnels from the images provided.

They were small enough to fit a couple of Conrad-class klaxosaurs, according to past APE experience. One led in the direction of directly under the Plantation and the other led away from it.

"What else do you see?" You ask Argentea's team.

"Alcov-? It looks like there's a couple of alcoves above us." Miku informs you. "Looks like they were just made as well."

Vague hissing and scurrying travelled over the the comms.

"Did you hear that?" Zorome asked Miku. "Yeah..." Miku nervously replied.

"Argentea. Conduct further recon by crawling through the tunnels."

"Roger." Zorome and Miku reply.
---
"It's cramped as hell in here." Zorome complained. "If something catches us, it's going to be hard to fight back." Miku rebukes him. "Don't jinx us."

Argentea stops suddenly.

"Oi, it's a pit full of spikes." Argentea highlights on the feed something most curious to look at. It was also something rather hard to believe without confirming it with your own eyes. "It's got klaxosaur blood on it. It looks relatively new as well." Zorome observed.

Since when do klaxosaurs set stake pit traps? You turn back and look at Hachi, asking whether or not he's seen something like this before. He waves his head negatively - it was unprecedented.

Argentea's microphones picked up yet more incidental chattering, scampering and hissing.

"OK, this is freaking me out." Zorome muttered.

"Concentrate." You firmly remind them.

Argentea navigated past the stake pit. They crawled further into the tunnel systems.

You overheard the bridge personnel chattering on about something: "There's been a lot of radio interference coming from below recently." The other bridge bunny replies, "I'm sure it's just some particularly strong tectonic activity."

Argentea stopped, having made its way to a crest within the tunnel system. Argentea looked down and through the video feed, you could determine that the crest seemed to be part of a bend - oddly reminiscent of toilet plumbing, particularly toilet traps, which were meant to keep out noxious fumes.

On closer examination, Miku commented. "It's flooded with some kind of bluish liquid."

Yet more scampering and scurrying could be heard in the background. Maybe a couple of clicks as well.

"Argentea, withdraw, now." You urgently told them over the comms, fearing for the worst. "We've got enough information, any further risks will yield no return."

"Roger that." Miku and Zorome acknowledged.

---

It took the better part of an afternoon for Argentea to back up from that abyss, such was its depth. You had to take special note of how efficient that Gutenberg klaxosaur from earlier was at digging.

Argentea, Chlorophytum and their pilots returned to the Plantations safe and sound. Aside from a general mood of annoyance and boredom that had infected the brats, no-one else was particularly phased phased by your and Ichigo's recon mission.

After a short visit to the briefing room where Hachi wrapped up the mission for Chlorophytum's and Argentea's teams and Hachi giving you and Ichigo some paperwork in his name to do, due tomorrow - it appeared that command had its less-than-glamorous responsibilities to go with it - you headed to dinner.

---

You nervously walked the trail back from the command office back to headquarters, reflections about the recon mission weighing you down. It could've gone very terribly wrong and no doubt it was very exhausting for Miku and Zorome. Goro and Ikuno must've felt rather nervous and bored at having to stand at the edge for so long. You could use a hug from Naomi right now...

"You know, Futoshi, you did well there." Ichigo tells you.

"I look forward to cooperating more with you in the future." You replied professionally to Ichigo - indeed, teamwork with Ichigo on the finer parts of command yielded results. Although you very much appreciated her compliment, you didn't let it go to your head.

You make your way to dinner.

You manage to catch Naomi smiling at you from the girls' table. Her mood seemed lightened by your presence. Perhaps because of this you found yourself actually chewing and enjoying your dinner this time around rather than just gulping it down.

---

You finish dinner with the rest of the squad. Spaghetti bolognese. Yum. You wipe your mouth clean and mumble the same old garbage prayer to Papa. It was a shame really. That prayer really left a bad aftertaste.

Of course, you didn't forget about the paperwork Hachi delegated to you and Ichigo. This would be your only opportunity to do said paperwork unless you were planning to let it cut into your night meeting with Miku and Naomi...

You leave the dining room first. As Ichigo walks out with the rest of the girls, you mumble "Recon Paperwork. Commons." She goes to common room along with you. You catch sight of Ikuno staring in your direction, a semi-dismayed expression of 'really?' plastered on her face. You suppose it's her problem she wasn't an NCO.

You continue to the commons to get on with the report.

---

"Let's see. Where to start..." Ichigo pondered. "The objective of today's reconnaissance mission was to gather intelligence on enemy movements, numbers and infrastructure within it." Ichigo puts it. You didn't see any reason to disagree with way Ichigo drafted it. She continued, "Tunnels leading in the direction of the Plantation were discovered. Elaborate traps, including klaxosaur-blood stained stake pits and flooded u-bends were detected. Additionally, the shaft leading downwards had alcoves dotting its side. No enemies were visually detected although throughout the mission, noise consistent with klaxosaur vocalisations was recorded. Stamen-Pistil pairs Codes 666 and 390 piloting Franxx unit Argentea and Codes 056 and 196 piloting Franxx unit Chlorophytum each respectively crawled through the tunnels and waited as reserve fire support." You rubbed your head as an itch popped out near your temples.

"Does that sound like a good introduction?" Ichigo stared at you, waiting for an answer. You were roused from that distracting itch and affirmed her observations, "Uh, yeah. It gets the point across."

"So, the assessment of it..." You fumbled with your fingers to get back in focus. "The reconnaissance mission was important. It point to a future attack on the currently stationary Plantation 13, in particular the tunnels pointed to under it. The traps indicate that the enemy has a theory of mind - or at the very least relies on complex ambush predation strategies. If this is so, the alcoves must be strongly considered in decision-making in that they show an awareness of the importance of high ground by the enemy. Furthermore, the enemy appears to be relying on stealth. The pilots of Argentea must be commended for their bravery and Chlorophytum for their patience." You finish, gasping in exhaustion for your hand's sake.

"So, we're finished." Ichigo observes.

"Yeah, guess we'll hand them in tomorrow." The reports weren't too dull, but they demanded work.

As if in response to that, Ikuno darts into the room, presumably to meet with Ichigo.

You greet Ikuno amicably with particular focus on commending her for waiting at the edge of the abyss from earlier patiently, "Hello there Ikuno, we were just discussing how important Goro and you were to providing potential fire supp-"

It strikes you to the core, like a steel girder colliding with your head. A sudden surge of pain zaps your head, swaying you to your side. You clutch your head desperately as the pain continues ripping through your temples. There is no relief no matter how hard you try to restrain yourself, as if it were a white hot lightning strike arcing outwards to the rest of your head and face. You groan in pain, your nose stuffed as you find yourself supporting yourself on the floor on your hand and knee. The headache continues ringing in your ears like Genista's artillery shock waves.

"Futoshi?!" Ikuno calls out. "Your nose is bleeding."

Thankfully Ikuno has a couple of tissues on her. She places them on the ottoman on which you support yourself and you pick them up to stem your nosebleed. You breathe through your mouth and reach for more tissues as the nosebleed continues to stain the tissues.

"You alright?" Ichigo asks you. "Yeah," you grunt, "it's nothing." Of course, your bloodstained shorts say otherwise, as did the carpet under you - your nosebleed is truly profuse. In summary, it's a damn mess. "Maybe you strained yourself too hard today." Ichigo expresses her concerns - when you thought about it, command was pretty intense, so she has a point.

"You seriously need to get to the infirmary." Ikuno states humourlessly.

"Maybe." You chuckle at your own predicament. "I think my clothes are as angry about this as I am." You wander off to the bathroom to join the other boys.

It seems, for whatever reason, 'fire support' - the soreness in your head throbs at the mere thought of the phrase - was a most inauspicious phrase to use today - first in the command room, second when Ichigo mentioned it in her reports and third just then. That is truly another predicament given that wherever there was mention of Chlorophytum, there was mention of 'fir-'- it, 'it', your mind insists on referring to this particular strangeness.

---

You soak yourself in the bath with the rest of the boys, anemically dozing off as Goro and Zorome trade banter.

"...pit full of spikes! Spikes! They never taught us anything about klax-blood tainted spikes in the Garden!" Zorome rants. Glad to know he was having gripes about APE.

"I don't know how Chloro's pilots weren't bored to death, but I'm never gonna forget how scary it was down there. What was your job anyway Goro, just standing on the edge?" There Zorome went off again, complaining about everything in the universe, devil's kith and kin.

"Eh, go ask Futoshi." Goro sheepishly scratches his head after that retort.

"Go answer him yourself, Goro." You jovially tell Goro off.

"Come on Futoshi." Goro manages to chuckle. Since when did Franxx piloting become a joke?

"Nah, I'm seriously tired as hell. Had a nosebleed." You inform them.

"Uh, OK. Fire support." Goro states.

You grasp at your head. That was the trigger phrase. 'Fire support'. Even thinking of it makes your head hurt.

"'Scuse me, I've got something to do." You tell them as an excuse to get out of the bath. Thankfully, nothing particularly interesting in term of gosip was getting passed around.

---

So apparently, a pair of words was triggering headaches in you now, the worst case being that nosebleed from earlier.

You try to not let that strange verbal encumbrance hinder you from your routine with Miku and Naomi.

As you prepare a set of notes, you manage to overhear a teeny, tiny bit of Miku blabbering on to Naomi about the mission. "...swim through a bend flooded with who-knows-what!"

The two of them head into the library to your table.

"I heard you had a pretty heavy nosebleed, Futoshi. Are you sure you're strong enough to carry out a lesson?" Naomi asks you, concerned.

"Uh, yeah, I guess." You mumble, almost incoherently.

"So, what are we looking at tonight?" Miku chirps enthusiastically.

5*4=20 AP, Futoshi succeeds
---
You decide to focus on discussing Napoleon and his innovations in artillery. You take careful note not to utter the trigger phrase, substituting it with something synonymous - an accursed annoyance.

---

You relate how Napoleon preferred lighter guns than the British - for example, although they both had 12-pounder cannon, Napoeleon had his guns constructed such that they they were lighter despite the munitions being of the same weight - this would prove crucial to many of his victories with artillery. {+1 Miku, Naomi, Futoshi, Skill Command Historia.}

Of course, Napoleon also rested 'on the shoulders of giants.' Grimbeauval in particular had standardised artillery pieces - standardisation was key. {+2 Naomi, Futoshi, skill/command historia, +1 Miku skill historia}

Moreso than the technology itself however, was the scale it was used on. Napoleon's ascendancy occurred against the backdrop France's mass mobilisation - levee en masse. With this, artillery units were greatly expanded, making such things as the infamous Grand Battery - essentially a collection of all artillery batteries into one unified artillery to brutally pound the enemy into submission. {+1 Skill/Command Historia for Miku, Naomi Futoshi}

You make an offhand comment about how quite a sight it would be if Genista's Rook Sparrow gun could be simplified mass-produced to be used by Standard Franxx units.

---

The lesson draws to an end and Naomi and Miku make their way to their bedrooms.

You wander into the woods, with all your thoughts and all your fears, heavier than all the fat and flesh on you. 'Am I going to succeed? Can I keep my end of my promises? Am I going to have something precious taken from me?' The last one was the worst, even though you had nothing yet that could be called a precedent to be wary of. You take a deep breath as you let your anxieties flow through you.

Being alone had its charms. You could get worried all you like and not have to deal with the concerns of others. That nosebleed earlier had really exposed you. You didn't like reminding yourself on it. Kneeling on the ground while other came and helped you... you weren't very comfortable with that. It made you feel weak, it made you feel vulnerable and you disliked that.

You pace nervously at the fork between the greenhouse and the hideaway. That recon earlier could've gone so wrong, so terribly wrong had Argentea just taken one wrong step.

You notice your worries are taking away from your chance to reminisce. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out. You try to ease your concerns...You almost chuckle at yourself at how ludicrous it felt.

The fork, the terrible fork. You'd always taken the way to Hiro if you'd ever wandered here, ever since leaving the garden. Hiro was instrumental, because if he was paired with Ichig- You find yourself reflecting on your schemes rather than reminiscing on the warmth of the past again.

But weren't they the same thing? Was that not the path you had chosen? Wasn't that scheme part of your past?

It was so tempting to wander into that greenhouse now...
