An entire segment of wall is disintegrated in the blink of an eye. The militia immediately begin to swarm into the the exposed town bellowing war shouts as they charge.
Orc sentries on the wall start hollering, frantically running and scrambling to raise the alarm.
This portion of the town is completely undefended. The entire army floods into the walls uncontested.
Before the fighting even begins you break off from the rest of the force. You join a small squad consisting of yourself, your party member Salaman, The Guard Captain of Oakheart, and the gladiator "Hack Ravage." You take an out of the way route towards the Orcs headquarters. Your mission: to eliminate the orc leader before he can escape.
The main force soon enough meets the enemy. Ferocious hordes of orcs crash against the dense formations of humans in the narrow streets of Clarcton. The orcs' dreaded war machines are nowhere to be seen, for now.
Alina and Ulric find themselves behind a formation of militia trying to hold the line against the orcs. But summoned beasts and undead humans and orcs start appearing to bolster their ranks and the humans start to become overwhelmed.
Ulric: "This is bad. They're going to break through. Then they'll be able to attack the other guards from the flanks."
Alina: "There must be some shamans summoning the beasts and raising the dead. We need to beat them quick."
Ulric: "But how can we get past all the orcs?"

>"We'll climb over them on the rooftops. Follow me"

You climb up some rubble and hoist yourselves onto a rooftop.
>"Watch the skies for those flying things while I search for the shamans..."
You scan the nearby area and see a wave of zombies and summon creatures exiting a building in a line. The shamans must be holed up in there. You look towards the rooftop in front of you, It's a bit lower and you're pretty sure you can make it. Ulric's armour is a lot heavier than yours he might fall if he tries to jump it.
Ulric: "Alina look out!"
You look skyward and see a flying beast speeding towards you. It was gigantic when you were in the form of a bird, but now it doesn't look so big.

Protection from Evil: increases armour class (reducing chance to be hit) but only against "evil" things. Prevents mind control and possesion.
Can cast many variants eg: Christof previously cast "Protection from Vegetables"
Summoned creatures aren't normally evil. Even when summoned by an evil person.

Shield: increases armour class. Completely blocks magic missile.

Protect: increases damage threshold (reducing damage taken by a flat amount)

You fire an arrow but it unexpectantly changes direction. Your arrow sails past as it prepares to ram you from the side.
Hurricain slams into Ulric almost toppling him of the edge and doing 5 damage. It doesn't stop moving, it continues flying forward out of melee range.
Ulric slashes Hurricain for 17 damage as it goes past.

You successfully cast protect on Ulric.
Hurricain veers around and slams into you for 6 damage you stumble towards the edge but retain your balance. The beast continues its hit and run pattern.
Ulric slashes the beast's wing for 15 damage before it can get out of range.

You shoot it with an ordinary arrow for 11 damage.
Hurricain tries to ram you but you evade.
Ulric fails to strike Hurricain as it flies past.

You shoot the creature before it can slam you again. It starts spiralling towards to ground and disintegrating.

>You (By which I mean Christof) gain 350XP

You hop the next roof top easily enough, but Ulric is hesitating. You don't see any more flyers right now but knowing how easily Salaman produces his summons you can tell there will be another one real soon.

Ulric's hands grab the edge of the roof. But he can't keep his grip and falls. Looks like your negative 10% chance to cast feather fall isn't going to cut it here. Ulric crashes to the ground behind the enemy line. Fortunately he still has the protection spell you cast on him a few seconds ago. He slowly picks himself up. He's hurt but he can stand. His legs look fine.
You hear one of the orcs grumble. "What's that?"
Another orc voice responds "Go and see stupid"

Ulric starts looking around for an escape route, there's nothing to climb and nothing to hide behind.

Fighting will take precious time. A hurricain could sneak up on you if you're focused on shooting enemies below.

Clearly the Orcs don't have a line of sight on Ulric, probably because he's around the corner of the building.
Have Ulric move to edge of the building so, if we get lucky, the Orc checking it out will be close enough for Ulric to pull into the alley with a sneak attack, supported by Alina's arrows.
Then we drop the rope.

If we're not lucky and the Orc is too far away?

Ulric needs to pretend to be a lost zombie.

You drop a healing potion to Ulric. It shatters on the floor next to him and the liquid fizzles and quickly turns into a healing mist, mending some of Ulric's injuries.
You start formulating a plan to ambush the orc without him having a chance to call in any allies but it's too late. The orc is already around the corner and walking towards Ulric. You're about to shoot an arrow into the greenskin when unexpectedly he starts speaking to Ulric.
Orc: "Nuh? You alive or a zombie?"
Ulric slumps slightly and looks at the orc with a vacant expression.
Ulric: "Unh? Urrrrrrrrr"
Orc: "Stupid zombie, fight is that way. Or wait. Urrrrrr."
Ulric: "Urrrrrr."
The orc spends a few seconds with a puzzled look on his face.
Orc: "Wait a minute!"
A no he's figured out Ulric isn't a zombie!

Orc: "You go that way, fight the two humies at the back alley"
Ulric: "URRRRRRR"
You sigh with relief as the orc begins trudging back to his post.
You lower a rope and pull Ulric back up.
Ulric: "Thanks Alina, i'm lucky that orc was an idiot huh?"
>"Be careful Ulric, I don't want to see you hurt"

The next roof top is tall but close, you both climb on top of it no problem. You're now on top of the building the monsters are streaming out of.

You can see there are some windows and only one door. You could wait a while for the next wave of minions to exit or go in immediately. There is no trap/door or chimney on the roof you can enter from. You could try and let Ulric dangle you over the side so you can peer through a window. If a Hurricain comes while you're looking it will definitely send you both toppling over the edge.

You waste no more time and charge straight in. Two orc shamans glare at you furiously. One draped in purple the other in black. There are no zombies to be seen or even any dead bodies. In the corner of the room sits a cage with several unarmed townspeople trapped inside and they start pleading and shouting at you when they see you enter. Finally there's a cauldron filled with a thick purple liquid, a summon creature seems to be emerging very slowly from the ooze. Two more stand ready in front of the shamans.
Black: "Good timing, me *just* run out of bodies"
The purple shaman looks you in the eye and prepares to cast a spell.
Purple: "Shouldn't have come back little owl, now you die"

You unleash a water arrow on the fire beneath the cauldron. The projectile sails into the flame. An eruption of water douses the fire and the underside of the cauldron. Steam hisses from the vessel and the creature emerging from the ooze slows down to a halt then begins to melt back into the goop.
Purple mutters "Aldir..." and casts a Magic Missile at you, it slams into your gut for 7 damage.
The two Psychos charge towards you only to be intercepted by Ulric. They snarl and engage him instead.
Ulric flurries a Psycho, the first blow is a critical hit wounding the summon creature for 15 damage, he follows up with a second blow doing 14 damage.
Black casts Chill Touch. Then jabs Ulric for 1(+6) damage. Ulric is weakened slightly.
The Two Psychos collective cause 3 damage to Ulric.

You apply a shield to yourself.
Purple squints at you and redirects his focus to Ulric. He casts Magic Missile. The speeding bolt of energy harms him for 12 damage.
Ulric flurries once more. His first attack destroys the injured Psycho for 6 damage. The second blow strikes the survivor for 6 damage.
Black casts Chill Touch. His fist is wreathed in an eerie blue energy. He promptly jabs Ulric with it for 1(+4) damage. Ulric is slightly weakened.
Psycho attacks Ulric for 1 damage.

You apply a shield to Ulric.
Purple casts Mage Armour. Ductile purple plates wrap around his body. He bangs his new attire with his fist causing a metallic clang.
Ulric slashes Psycho in the eyes for 12 damage.
Ulric: "Wait, you don't even HAVE any eyes!"
Black casts Chill Touch. He jabs Ulric for 1(+6) damage. Ulric is slightly weakened.
The Psycho tries in vain to power attack Ulric through his protection and steel plated armour but only succeeds in doing 2 damage.

You loose a poisoned arrow at Purple. A direct hit! The arrow penetrates his mage armour for 1 damage. He is slightly poisoned.
Purple casts Summon Monster III summoning a Psycho. Great now there's two again.
Ulric flurries the Psycho for 6+7 damage. The second blow destroys the humanoid. Ulric turns and sets his sights on Black.
Black casts Chill Touch and jabs Ulric again for 1(+3) damage. Ulric is slightly weakened.
Black: "Suffer, weak human."
The new Psycho moves to engage Ulric.

Ulric is in a bad way. He hasn't many physical injuries but you can tell the blue energy has harmed him. Not only that but it looks like he can barely lift his axe anymore.
The black cloaked shaman grins and prepares another Chill Touch.

The townspeople in the cage start shouting curses at the orcs and cheering your victory. Banging against the bars and door of the cell.

Guys?
Ulric has 44 HP and taken at least 22(+19) damage.
By my math, that puts him at 3 HP.
A healing potion might be a good idea.

Also, a Dispell Magic might get Ulric his strength back.
Unless that's like Con damage or something.
When Ulric is almost down for the count, we need to deploy our Secret Technique tm.

I say:
>Heal Ulric
>Ranged Attack (95%) Poison Arrow to the black cloaked Cool Hand Puke.
>Dispell Magic on Ulric (if that'll work)
>Ranged Attack (95%)
>Ranged Attack (95%)

The purple Perp can wait his turn.

Personally hoping the humies break free and give us some much needed back up.
I'd suggest picking the lock, but that's a 19% chance and probably an attack of opportunity.

Definitely wait for others to weigh in on this one.
I'm leaning towards:
>>Leadership (all party members gain a bonus to everything)
+10 crushing
+10 Transmutation

Very open to any other opinions.
>>
>>2723603
holy fucking shit remind me not to mess with Oakheart. Lets not forget to pick up the scroll that was dropped by the way
>>2723648
I dont think we should level transmutation since we don't even know any spells for it. How about we go...
>Leadership (all party members gain a bonus to everything)
>+20 persuade
We should level some non-combat skills in my opinion, and persuade is always useful. A whole lot of speech checks this quest
Later we can increase our combat abilities
>>
>>2723607
>>Bonus Party Member (increases max companions from 3 to 4)
How many available companions do we have?
>>
>>2723730
None your party is maxed.
0: yourself
1: Alina
2: Ulric
3: Salaman

to name a few, do rare ghouls with shovels truly exist?
will we try to romance alina or an uthanian princess back home? decisions, decisions
>>
>>2723740
So there's no extra companions available?
>>
>>2726834
that's exactly what he's saying m8

>to name a few, do rare ghouls with shovels truly exist?
Yes.

>will we try to romance alina or an uthanian princess back home?
Though you live in the same castle as them you have had limited interactions with either of the princesses. But you got to enjoy servicing their armour on multiple occasions.

>>2726834
>So there's no extra companions available?

No extra companions are available.
If a companion is fired/killed/leaves then you could replace them.
If you get the Bonus Party Member feat (or increase your Charisma to 8) you will be able to take a 4th companion in addition to the ones you already have.

I like the atmosphere of Utain. Here's to hoping we return home a hero and preferably, in one piece.
You could have lied about the shovel ghouls though, how am I supposed to sleep peace now
>>
>>2723661
>>Leadership (all party members gain a bonus to everything)
>>+20 persuade
Gonna switch to this.
But we should look into finding some Transmutation spells.

>Next session will be in 9 days. I wont be updating the quest until then.
Okay. Cool.
Thanks for running!
