The MAGI floor is dimly lit, basking in the yellow-reddish tones of the LCL tanks sporadically lining the walls.

The MAGI floor is just as you remember it, except for the tank where Ophelia 12 was suspended in. It is empty now, the pale clone body replaced by a thick unremarkable tube. As you head closer to the MAGI central core, you begin to hear voices echoing through the corridors. Some idle chatter about stocks, vacations, family.

This feels… wrong.

You then notice several groups of silhouettes. Mostly men and women in suits and dresses, as if they were attending some kind of business dinner. Maybe the nauseating LCL smell is going to your head, but you are a having a real hard time recognizing anyone here. Worse still, in the dim lightning their silhouettes seem to sometime shift and disappear. Keeping your distance, you head for a stair cage leading to the control station where you presume would be the object of your scouting mission: the MAGI terminal. Inside it you would plug in the self-destruct virus Ophelia gave you, once the last angel will arrive. But not now. You only need to make sure of where it is and how to get to it.

As soon as you climbing the stairs, a familiar but unpleasant voice erupts ahead.

“My, my! What have we here?”

“I would have expected you of all people to be down there and enjoy the party with everyone. Especially after your… promotion.

You crouch near the stairs, close to the wall. Two men are talking, one is leaning against the catwalk while the other is holding a glass and smoking a cigarette.

“…Ah, Hughes.”

“Can you tell me why the man responsible for saving humanity is sulking in the dark? This party is mostly for you, Phillip. Everyone here acknowledges the immense advantage you gave u—“

“Drop the act. You’ve seen the MAGI estimates. You know we don’t stand a chance against what’s coming. Even with those monstrous things the Vancouver guys are working on.

Everyone here will be dead in a couple of years and there’s nothing we can do.”

“That’s a bleak statement to make, coming from the newly appointed Director of Nerv-Montréal’s Science Division.”

“…”

Hughes then lights a cigarette of is own.

“You know there’s a… way out for us, Phillip.”

“I don’t believe in your voodoo bullshit, Hughes. Not back then in Antarctica, not now.”

“Hmpf. Still the same thick-headed man you were then I see. If only you were present when the incident happened you wouldn’t dismiss this proposition as voodoo bullshit. I have… seen it, Phillip. Felt it, even. When the Egg almost hatched. I was there.

...We’ll become so much more when the time comes again. This is our chance of survival. Not in a pointless war, but in rebirth.”

“…”

“Take the time to think it over, some people would like to have a man of your calibre for humanity’s next step. …There’s no rush, right?” Hughes’ laugh makes you shiver. Phillip finishes his drink.

“You should go down there, meet with people. Your people. They need a strong leader, now more than ever.

Oh, and before I forget. That R&D Supervisor was looking for you. What was her name again, Bethany? Elise?”

“Elizabeth.”

"Right. I'll see you Monday."

Hughes leaves without waiting for Phillip's response, which comes in the form of a muttered "Asshole" after a long drag of his cigarette.

Maybe it would be preferable to talk with Phillip before doing a mistake?

Judging by the mention of Elizabeth, this is most likely some sort of a "window into the past"

She's not "that R&D Supervisor", she's "the R&D chief" now.

The remark about "newly appointed Director of Nerv-Montréal’s Science Division" also confirms this is the past.

>Try to get a look at "Philipp"'s face. He should be dead, after all.

Peeking out of the corner, you try to take a quick glance at the long-haired man's face. You went to his funeral, saw him get buried. How could this be? The man then turns around and walk toward the stairs. Toward you. You quickly hide and still you breathe, but there's no way for him to not notice the girl crouching there.

A minute pass without him passing by, without a footstep sound. You finally decide to look again but to your surprise, there is no one. The man is gone.

Your head spins, the ground gives in. Somehow you miraculously catch the railing, stopping your fall. The LCL smell has finally got the better of you. Its smell is so rotten and foul you could puke. Or maybe you just did? The darkness of the room spins around you, silhouettes too. You feel them walk right through you. It makes you sicker still.

The only light left in your warping vision is the small window of the control station, at the end of the catwalk. Catwalk which now undulates and spins in irregular patterns. Falling here would easily cripple you, if not kill you outright.

>>2677377
You were always yourself, but at the same time you never accepted anyone else but yourself. You wrapped yourself up in this idea of individuality, without thinking that there were people around you that did want more to do with you.

I never wanted to throw you away for her, nor for the others to become so distant. I recognize that as my greatest mistake. For what it's worth, I am sorry for never trying harder to understand your circumstance, Eileen. Or maybe, not really trying at all.

As for what happened with CAG...that's another mistake I have come to regret. Rachel was someone I care about and so was Ophelia. In the end it was something I couldn't really decide on, and I thought I could please both parties involved.

It's funny though, considering this was my modus operandi for the majority of our little time at Nerv. Trying to be friends with everyone and becoming the ally of none. The only question is, what do we do about it now?

Action stations. Actions stations. Condition-1 has been set throughout the Geofront. All non-combat personnel are to evacuate immediately. This is not a drill. I repeat- Action Stations.[...]

"She barely responsive! And you want to put her inside an Eva?!"

"Stay back, Doc. Our orders come from the Chief of Tactical Operations. We're cleared to--"

The whole complex shakes. Through the fogginess of you mind your perceive that a silhouette in a white coat fell to the ground.

"CP this is Sec2 03. We've secured the Third Child. On our way to Eva 01 cage."

You'll have to go the way around Block C, Block A and B have been completely destroyed by Eva Unit 03.

"What? Are you sure?"

Yes. Damage reports are still coming in. You better hurry, Eva 03 is coming your way."

"Shit!"

"You heard CP. Move out!"

You feel being lifted up. You feel being carried through corridors. What is going on? The constant alarms blaring is hurting your head. Every now and then the men carrying stops as the walls and ground shake, then resume their wild run once it's over.

"Give her here. No time for the plugsuit, we'll hook her up directly in the Entry Plug."

"Aren't you going to wake her up?"

"Once she's in the plug, not before."

[...]

Again, that smell. That pungent, disgusting LCL smell.
