/qst/ - Quests

We are Sirena Le Doux and we seek revenge against our former master. So far, we've grown powerful enough to become the Witch Queen, but there is much more to learn. With our list of allies and teachers ever expanding, we won't stop until we've reached the top, because that's where our former master waits.

Last time, we returned to our family home at their invitation, only to eventually learn that they have sold us out and are working for our hated enemy and the object of our vengeance, Mordrax. Given the chance to join him and our family for a place in his coming empire once he overthrows the current kingdom, we rejected him and fought to escape, only doing so with the help of a former enemy, the Witch Hunter. We fled our home without a second thought, and now must plan how to stop our enemy and end his conspiracy. We must have our revenge!

Also, we turned green.

Our story continues!
>>
You don't know how far north you have travelled in the span of a single night, constantly hounded by demons, mechanical devices and other magical means of pursuit from your traitorous family. Fleeing on steeds of unnatural speed, dogged by monsters and magic at every turn, your adrenaline-fueled mind didn't even think to use your twin-teleport once you were out of the storm. In your mind, images of your family home still burn as surely as it did in real life when you rained down bolt after bolt of lightning upon it. The face of each member of your family is cemented firmly within your mind, as well as that of your hated nemesis Mordrax. Not only was he content in taking your public life, he took your family as well! Everything that you have done to them and your home is his fault.

The only innocent one is Edgar. You swear to rescue him, eventually.

For now, the important thing to do is survive, and you have done so thanks to the keen instincts and skills of your current companion and tentative ally, the Witch Hunter. He is the one who spirited you away on summoned steeds, and it is his cabin, presumably, that you are now taking refuge in, somewhere in the woods north of your family's land. You crossed several other family properties during your escape, but it was night and your trail was lost somewhere after the fifth manor. Now you stand in front of the cabin's window, staring out at the morning light, tapping your fingers impatiently upon it.

"You should move away from the window," he advises, sitting next to the small fireplace. The sparsely-furnished cabin in many ways reminds you of himself; simple, efficient, rugged. You take his advice and slip away from the window and put your back to the wall, sliding to a sitting position.

"Curse you, Mordrax," you whisper. There is a nearly-constant buzzing in your head, brought about by your anti-scrying magic field, indicating that your family is still trying to find you. "You think they would give up on that already..." you say, rubbing your forehead.

"Perhaps they think you will give up and let them in just to stop the headache."

"My will is strong," you reply. "As is my resolve. And now that I know Mordrax is behind the curse and is going to use it for his coup, I couldn't be more adamant in my desire to destroy him."

He pokes the burning logs with an iron stick. "Thank you for revealing this plot to me, Sirena. But it is a little beyond my paygrade."

A smile slowly makes its way to your lips and you crawl alongside him, giving him a sultry look. Lying next to him, making no small attempt to flaunt your gorgeous body, despite your wet and torn dress. "I'll make it worth your while, beyond any sum."

He smirks, but doesn't look at you. He continues to poke at the fire. "That sort of thing doesn't interest me."

"I thought you had experience dealing with Witch Queens."

"You'll have to forgive me, but I'm more into hunting witches, not laying with them."

"We could always change that. And there are more rewards than just the physical, you know. There could be a lot of money in saving the country."

He nods. "There could." His smirk goes away but he still doesn't look at you, taking on a more serious tone. "I mean no offense, but dealing with a Witch Queen is one thing. This is something else entirely."

"You're saying Mordrax is more powerful than I?"

At that, he does give you a sidelong glance. "Are you saying he isn't?"

You frown and look into the fire. "He is very powerful, and well-entrenched. He possesses many artifacts and his knowledge of arcane lore surpasses my own. But he isn't immortal." You look back at him and say, "Together, we could destroy him."

"I doubt it."

You sit up, shooting him a disappointed and somewhat judging expression. "You mean to give up, then?"

"I never said that. I can't turn my back on this situation. What I doubt is the two of us being able to stop him on our own."

"I have gathered many allies."

He closes his eyes and chuckles. "Again, I mean no offense, but I've looked into them. I don't doubt their sincerity, but all of them lack experience. That barbarian king you've got stored away somewhere, he might be of help."

"My allies have come through for me when I need them to. But I concede that I had hoped to build them up more before confronting Mordrax, which was always the plan. I knew from the very beginning that he was going to take over the kingdom, but now he's advancing the timeline. We only have so long before the common folk learn of this curse and his plan is put into action."

"That's why we need help, and a plan. I don't know how much experience you have in battle or war, but I'm guessing it isn't much. If that's what this country is heading towards, we need a very, very good strategy." He turns his head to face you fully. "Together, we might both have power, and you may have ambition, but you're not the only one with allies."

"So, you have friends?"

"In a sense." He looks back at the fireplace. "What we are, are members of an organization with no name. And we have no shared names, even among each other, outside of titles. I am the Witch Hunter."

Your eyes light up a little. "Ahh... so it's not just me you don't tell your name to, then?"

"I'm afraid not. No one knows my true identity, not even those I work with. I don't know theirs, either. The Silent Knight, the Northman, the Grey Ranger, the Bearer-of-Burdens, and others. We're all bound by a mutual code of anonymity and working towards a brighter future without evil."

"And yet you still accepted large amounts of money for killing the older Witch Queens?"

"You can fight evil and still get paid for it. Most of us do, in our own way. Each member of our group takes different tasks upon themself, targets specific things. Mine is witches, hags, covens, that sort of thing. Sometimes we help each other, sometimes we see each other in public and never acknowledge each other. The public doesn't even know we exist."

"Then why do it at all?"

"I thought, given your exile, you'd understand the value of keeping a low profile. We're not interested in being heroes of legend, the subjects of songs, or otherwise. We do our job and we do it without caring about thanks or being known for doing it, and we keep doing it until we retire, either in battle or by age." He turns over a log, then sets the iron rod aside. "As for why I, specifically, do it... someday, I want to have a family, and I want the world to be a safer place when I do. All the money I'm making now is set aside for that day."

You stare at him as he becomes strangely vulnerable, revealing why he does what he does. Studying his face intently, you detect no hint of lies or attempts to garner sympathy; he is simply telling the truth. "You trust me enough to tell me all of this?"

"Whether I like it or not, we're in this together. Your enemy is my enemy. Fighting each other isn't going to get us anywhere, and as I come to understand you, it's only right that you should understand me as well."

I'd say Mordrax and the father could be on a similar level.

Bringing up a hand, you cup his cheek and turn his face to stare into his eyes. "You might not like all of the things I do," you whisper to him. "After all, I am the Witch Queen."

"I'm taking a gamble on you, Sirena, and hoping it pays off. I've learned some potentially disturbing things in studying you, and I don't know how true they are. Part of me doesn't want to know, because you and I are both on the same side. The other part of me doesn't want to ignore it, wants me to find evidence that will lead to me killing you." He is silent for a moment. "Part of me wants to learn more about you, but for other reasons, ones that I'm not comfortable getting close enough to a witch to explore."

"Which side is going to win out?" you ask with a smile, running your hand down his arm.

"I'm not going to say I'm a saint and have done no wrong in my life. I'd like to believe I'm working towards a common good and that sometimes I have to get my hands dirty, and that you're doing the same, just in different ways." He leans in close, his face inches from your own. "I'll say this once, Sirena: don't make me regret not killing you."

Your smile slowly fades. "Understood, Witch Hunter."

He pulls back and looks into the fire. "I'll need to contact my people. Set up a meeting. You'll be there, under my protection, as our key witness linking all of these things together."

"The first step in our plan should be figuring out what resources we have available to us. How many friends do you have?"

"Not many, but we're all the best in our fields. Some of them are like you, you know. One is a necromancer. Calls himself the Misunderstood. Always talks about how he wants to revolutionize the modern world with a working class of undead serving as farmers, miners, and other things. You'd probably like him. So don't think I'm unwilling to work with someone who uses questionable methods."

"I'm glad to know that. When can I expect this meeting to happen?"

"I'll be in touch as soon as possible."

You stand up and stretch. "Then I should be off, I suppose." You pause, looking down at him, wondering how you should say goodbye.

"Thank you," you say to him. "For coming to help."

He straightens, looks at you over his shoulder, and nods respectfully. With that, you disguise yourself as Mary, twin-teleport back to Redford Tower, and fall straight into bed between two sleeping figures, who quickly aren't sleeping anymore.

As you plop into the bed between Faye and Amanda, both of them shoot straight up. In equal states of nudity, Amanda quickly grabs the sheets to remain modest and cover her chest; Faye doesn't and doesn't really care. You sit up and look at them both, first at Amanda, then shooting a nasty look at Faye.

"What?" she asks with a shrug. "Don't give me that look."

"What is the meaning of this?!" Amanda demands.

You roll your eyes and sigh. "Sorry. I didn't expect for that to happen. Experiments with teleportation magic, you know? Sometimes things go wrong." You give her a sheepish grin and a shrug.

Faye smiles, quickly deciding to make the most of the opportunity. "Well, it sure is nice of you to drop in on us, though..." Her hands run up your sides. "Care to join us for some 'breakfast'?"

Amanda seems shocked, but not against the idea. You, however, are in no state for any such activity. You grab the white-haired vixen by the ear and yank her next to you. "Faye, I need to talk to you, outside, as soon as possible." She protests with a small howl and you let her go, crawling out of the bed. "Amanda, nice seeing you. Sorry for, ah, intruding."

The paladin gives you a small wave. "Nice seeing you too, Mary."

You exit and close the door behind you and let out a sigh. 'Should've expected that one.'

In a way, it is almost liberating to chart all of this down, and look upon your progress. You have come far and accomplished much, but there is still much more to do. As you finish jotting down the last of your notes, Faye pushes up the trap door and enters. "You wanted to see me?"

You set the scroll down and turn to look at her. "I have a lot to catch you up on."

Faye listens to your story in relative silence, carefully taking in every word. You fill her in on everything; after all, she's your mirror-twin, and as deeply embroiled in this struggle as you are. She asks few questions and, in the end, takes a few moments before speaking after you are done.

"So, we're going to kill our family, then?"

"Even if they begged for their lives to me, they willingly joined Mordrax. I've no love for them anymore, if I ever even did."

"And what about your list?"

You hold it up and briefly scan your eyes up and down. "There are several items on here that are in a state of relative disuse. Some of our allies can be made stronger, some of our assets put to greater use, some of our properties expanded and some of our enemies pruned or turned to our advantage. I don't know how much time we have before Mordrax makes his play, but we need to do everything in our power to turn everything on this list towards the ruination of his plot and his ultimate destruction."

"That sounds like fun. Oh, I've been waiting for this day! And now we have our own army. I'm so excited!" She springs up to her feet. "So, what's first?"

"Let me think for a moment..."

>We need to take care of some of our lesser enemies.
>We need to start turning our living assets into weapons of war.
>We need to make our allies and associates stronger.
>We need to strengthen our minions and support their missions.

"It is high time we got to know some of the cults that worship us in Aran," you tell her. "I've never had any direct contact with any of them. I think we should change that."

"That sounds like fun. Cults always have the best parties."

She stands up and prepares to follow you downstairs when you suddenly hear a loud shriek from your window. Both of you turn to behold a crow standing there, staring at you.

Your eyes narrow and you touch the coin containing the raven spirit. "Is this one of yours, spirit?"

"No," it whispers to you. "I have no power over it... that is no crow!"

You are about to cast a spell when suddenly it shapeshifts into a perched human, all in the blink of an eye. You and Faye look upon her with suspicion and guarded stances, ready to defend yourselves. The woman has white skin and a featureless face, with white eyes surrounded by dark recesses. Her body is shapely in all womanly aspects, and her skin is smooth like the finest marble. You have seen this manner of creature before: a changeling.

"I am not here to harm you," she says with a mischievous smile. "I come bearing gifts."

"My mother always told me not to accept gifts from strangers."

"Well, you're not exactly on good terms with her anymore, are you?"

Your eyes widen. "Speak your name, your purpose and how you know this before I kill you where you stand, intruder."

"Calm yourself," she says, sitting on your window. "My name is Isseal. I am a servant of the gods."

"Which ones?"

"Sycroph and Cermine, husband and wife, rulers of the Veiled Realm, gods of cunning and deception. I am their messenger, their servant and yours."

"And why have these gods seen fit to send a changeling into my room?"

"That was me. I've been studying you for some time, as have they, and they wish to bestow upon you their blessing." She places a hand on her chest, above her rather generous bust. "I am the physical vessel to deliver this blessing, and your servant."

You slowly lower your hands. "When you say 'servant,' what exactly do you mean?"

"I am yours, as commanded by my lord and lady, Master and Mistress of Change and Trickery. If you wish to know why, I came to be their servant not through worship, but through a game. I lost, and now their will is my will, and if their will is for your will to be mine, then it shall be so."

"You know this because you have spoken with these gods?"

"If I have ever spoken with them directly, I would know it not. They never show their true selves, and often work through servants of servants, like myself. If you wish to have proof, look no further than this."

She holds up her palm and there is a marking upon it, that of an open eye. "This eye is a gift from the gods, the blessing I have been told to pass onto you. I have carried it but am not worthy to keep it."

"And I am?"

"So they say. This bond here is the Eye of Unveiling, and it brings with it many gifts."

"Tell me of this blessing." You pause, then sit in the comfortable chair before your mirror. Faye places her hands on your shoulders. "While you're at it, tell me of yourself."

"I was born in a faraway city, raised as an elf. If you did not know, when two changelings mate, the child is born in the form of the mother. They were disguised as elves and so I was born looking like one. I discovered my true nature in childhood, and was delighted. The games I played in youth were many and wonderful, until I recklessly exposed my true nature to the wrong people. They murdered my parents and I ran. It wasn't hard to hide; it never has been. But I didn't want to hide. I wanted revenge."

You lean forward with a smile. "Go on."

"I knew all of them, and planned my revenge. It was long and sweet, and far-reaching. I made a man fall in love with another woman, only for her to no longer exist. His family life destroyed, he took his own life. I pretended I was another's daughter, then faked my own death, all the while having kidnapped her. I didn't want to merely kill them, I wanted to give them such pain, such anguish, my own despair reflected in them a thousand fold. This campaign of pain is what brought me to the attention of the gods."

"What happened next?"

"They wanted to know if I could beat them at their own game. I couldn't. For all my clever plotting and planning, manipulation and seduction, I failed to discern which of them was which. When I guessed wrong, I knew I was defeated, and became their servant. Through them I have gained power and seen many places and people, and now I serve you... because of what you plan."

"The gods know of this?"

"The gods always know what is going on down here. Some more than others. Some ignore it, some have a hand in it, some only look upon it with mild interest and usually boredom. That's the thing about gods: they usually have their own things to worry about. That's why they have servants like me."

"I see... Now, tell me about this blessing."

She once more holds up the eye. "This eye will reveal truths to you that are hidden. Not just illusions, but lies as well. It will allow you to know a person's deepest desires, the things they hide away from others, and how to make them yours. But more than that, this eye will let you see things that you could not see before, and I don't mean just the physical."

"Am I expected to do something for them in return?"

"Only to keep doing what you are doing. They don't have a stake in this fight; they'll be around either way. But they like you. Perhaps all the things you have done has earned you their respect, such as it were. I know that you've earned mine."

You stare into her white eyes for a moment before asking, "You mentioned that you have been following me? Have we ever spoken?"

"No, never in person, and never indirectly. I've kept my distance. You see, unlike other changelings, whose transformations are limited to humanoid beings, I can take a great many forms. A painting, a chair, a cup, a rug. Perferably not those last three, especially the second and fourth, as they involve me being sat and walked on. Perhaps a demonstration?"

Before your eyes, she turns into a cloth, slipping onto the floor. You and Faye watch as she glides over the ground, underneath the your bed. Two white hands emerge, pulling herself out from beneath, and now she is in her true form again. She smiles. "See?"

"I'm impressed," you admit. "What is the process?"

"Merely shake my hand."

"You serve a goddess of trickery. How do I know this isn't a trick?"

Isseal stands before you, then kneels. "Perhaps it would please you to brand me? Then you could command anything of me and I would tell you the truth."

You fold your legs and consider her offer. "I require complete loyalty for my brand to be placed."

"You already have it. You just don't know me very well, which I can understand. We'll get to know each other better as time goes on."

She smiles. "If they didn't want it to happen, it couldn't. Shall we find out?"

You hesitate a moment longer, then smile back at her. "Let's."

You place your hand upon her forehead. "Swear your ultimate loyalty to me."

"I swear it," she says without hesitation.

"From this moment forth, you belong to me. You understand this an accept."

"I do."

"Then you are mine." Before your eyes, the brand appears on the right side of her neck. You immediately establish a mental link with her, feeling her added to your collection of marked minions. You take your hand off of her head and sit back as Faye grins, rubbing your shoulders in anticipation of your newest plaything.

"Tell me, Isseal -- why were you so quick to give of yourself to me? Did you truly serve the gods?"

"Serving you is serving them, in their own words, though not directly. And it helps that I am not truly my own person."

"Oh? Explain."

"When you can be everything, you can feel like nothing. No goals, no dreams, no ambitions. I achieved my revenge and was satisfied, but when the world was open to me... I knew not what I wanted. I wandered for so long until I found my purpose. And I enjoy it."

"I am satisfied. Bestow this blessing upon me."

She holds up her hand, and you take hold of it. You feel a strange energy connecting you to her for a brief moment, then it is gone. The passage is simple and quick, and when you look at your palm, you now see the Eye of Unveiling staring back at you. It is but an image of magical ink, yet it seems almost more, as though it were truly looking back at you.

"I want to test this," you say, turning towards Faye. She suddenly looks a little nervous.

"On me?"

You smile. "No. I want you to talk to Amanda. Nonchalantly, simply. I'll observe from a distance and learn what I can do."

She gives you a bright smile. "Okay! I can do that."

Several minutes later, you are downstairs, eating breakfast with the others. Amber made a delightful meal, if an extremely plain one, that Alex helped season. Bargum offered to share his personal brew with everyone at the table, but only Amber took him up on it. Amanda respectfully abstained and Alex dutifully replied that he was too young to drink. That earned him a hair-ruffling from you, which he enjoyed.

As for your newest servant, she demonstrated what is perhaps the most amazing of her abilties: the fact that she changes in weight along with shape and size. You are wearing her out in the open as a new, sparkling necklace laced with gemstones, and nobody -- not even you -- would know better. You gently touch one of the stones, feeling its smooth surface, as you eat and observe.

While you politely and reservedly dig into the plate of eggs and sausage, Faye looks across the table at Amanda. "So, Amanda," she begins, "will you be leaving us today?"

"It would be best to return to the chapel in Bridge Town," she says with a nod. "After that orc attack not long ago, people aren't feeling quite as safe. They come to the chapel with prayers and the sight of a paladin can make them feel safer, even though the town has guards."

Beneath the table, you open your palm and point it at her. Her words enter your ears, and though you understand them perfectly, other meanings accompany them. She feels great regret over something in her past, which causes her to seek to repent by protecting others. She is conflicted over her sense of duty and her deeper, lustful desires. She punishes herself with a form of self-flagellation for her sins.

'Interesting,' you think, drinking deeply from a small chalice. 'It seems like she is terribly conflicted. She desperately wants to maintain the appearance of a noble and strong paladin of her faith, but on the inside is tortured because she doesn't feel like she truly is. What a burden she must carry. Perhaps someone should relieve her of it...' You look down at the eye in your palm and smile. 'What a useful gift indeed.'

After breakfast, you send Alex up to his room to study, while Bargum and Amber decide to train outside. Whispering your plan to Faye, you and she wait until Amanda is about to leave the tower when you spring your trap.

With her armor back on, she is about to head out of the door, only to encounter Faye, putting on a sad face. "When are you going to visit us again?"

Amanda smiles. "Soon, my little white dove." She brings a hand up to her chin and cups it, tilting her head back so she may lean down to kiss her. Faye moans into the kiss, wrapping her arms around Amanda's armored shoulders.

When she breaks the kiss, she rests her head on Amanda's breastplate. "Oh, I don't want you to leave... you aren't ashamed of our time together, are you?" She rubs a finger in a circle on the steel.

Amanda is slightly stunned. "W-what? No! Of course not. It's just that I have duties..."

Faye's lip quivers. "I know how it is. Always putting work before love."

"It's not that," she insists, bringing up both hands to hold her shoulders. "I've sworn oaths, I have a duty to the people, I need to maintain the chapel. Truth be told, I shouldn't have even stayed these last two nights, I--" She stops herself as she beholds Faye's pained face. "No, I, I didn't mean that, it's just that I--"

"I understand," Faye says, wiping a tear from her eyes. "You love your job more than me."

"It's not that!" she insists, becoming somewhat flustered. "I love our time together, more than I should!"

That's when you make your move, appearing from behind. "What do you mean by that? 'More than you should?' I'm curious."

She looks back, her eyes wide. "Ah! Mary... Were you listening to all of that?"

"You say you aren't ashamed of your time with Faye, but deep down, that's not exactly true, is it?"

"No! It isn't! I..." Her voice trails off.

Faye turns her head to face her. "Not of your time with me... but of your time spent indulging in yourself," she whispers, staring deeply into her bright, blue eyes. "I know you know I'm right, Amanda, because I know you."

You step up to her side. "You don't have to feel ashamed of what you've done. There's nothing wrong with enjoying yourself, or those around you."

Amanda closes her eyes and shakes her head. "It's not... Of course I enjoyed it all, but it's not proper. It's not disciplined. Gods, Faye, those things I did to that first night, I was out of control."

"It's okay," she says, rubbing Amanda's cheek. "I liked it. All of it."

"She talks about it often," you say, whispering in the paladin's ear as you stand on your tip-toes. "I must admit, I've found her stories... vexing."

Amanda gulps. "I... should go."

Faye doesn't budge. "No... you should stay. With us."

You move closer, wrapping your arms around her arm and pressing your breasts against her armor. "And enjoy yourself." Your ruby glows brightly and your eyes flash with a seductively charming spell.
>>
>>2668702

"Don't you shouldn't feel ashamed at all," Faye adds, before leaning up to kiss her. The kiss is short and passionate, and as she breaks it off, she turns Amanda's head to face you and you swoop in for the next one, planting your lips firmly against the tall, strong paladin's. Her lips are not as full and soft as Faye's, nor Merriam's, somewhat thin and plain, but strong. She yields to your touch, giving in immediately as your tongue meets hers, moaning lightly into your mouth before she stops and pulls away.

She is conflicted, torn between what she wants and what she thinks she wants. "Mary... I..."

"I'm willing to take Faye up on that offer from earlier..." you whisper, your eyes bright as you cast your lewd suggestion. Already under the influence of your magical kiss, and worn down from your and Faye's combined assault, she is utterly under your control. You just need to seal the deal.

Alright, Sirena and Faye will do it themselves.

We'll resume tomorrow, but as a forewarning, updates will be sparse, but only on Friday. That's why I wanted to start the thread today to get it going to make up for any lost time tomorrow.

Thanks for playing so far. If you couldn't tell from the list I finally got around to making in >>2667831 and >>2667836, this thread will be focused more on all of our allies and assets so far. After railing the paladin, we'll travel to Aran to meet our cults and see what they can do for us.

Take a look at that list and come up with some ideas of what we can do with everything on it, particularly things like our assets, minions and allies. This thread will have plenty of opportunities for us to get new powers and empower our minions as we begin to prepare for taking on Mordrax and the Le Doux family. Share your ideas here in the thread or in the discord channel!

Alright, sorry if I'm over thinking any of this, just hoping this might help with our war efforts.

First off, lets look at the basics of military organization: Bred, Lead and Fed. (thank you World War Z)

Bred: We need bodies but this is being taken care of and we've been consolidating our forces for sometime. Still wouldn't hurt to have our forces get proactive on their side of things.

Lead: We need to ensure whom ever we put in charge of these forces are loyal and capable, regardless of how decentralized they maybe.

Fed: Logistics is something we need to also secure while we are gathering forces. The more 'living' troops we have, we'll need to be able to have food, supplies and resources to we give them so they can accomplish any task instructed.

Next step: Intelligence.
We need to get our spy network to beginning gaining important information. Enemy forces numbers, locations, how quickly they can respond to an attack, how well equipped they are, which ones could be turned (if necessary)

Enemy allies: Who are they talking to, who should we be on the look out for, and who can we 'disway' from backing them. If we can turn these forces or sever production/trade lines (by funding independent bandit groups that cant be traced back to us) we can force our enemy to have to expend resources to combat on too many fronts.

Sabotage: where are enemies are getting their resources, is it best to destroy or steal them, will it effect the local populous (and can we effect public opinion against them.) Staging local distress, riots and such, that will cause them to waste resources and man power to keep things on the home front in order.

These are just our preparations, mind you. We need to factor in that the enemy will make the first move. Hopefully we wont have to worry about this but it leads to our my next up coming suggestions.

Skirmishers - Our first responders/advance scouting force. These groups will act as harassment if we can make the first play and a 'speed bump' for when the enemy makes their first move, allowing us to mobilize a counteroffensive.

I recommend these forces be 'disposable' units like say, undead skeletons. We have them harass our enemy but make it look like random incursions. Have them hit targets of opportunity (convoys, supply trains, under defended depots or outpost). Make them paranoid but not convinced that we are behind it. Also paying off local bandits, through 3rd party brokers to pull some jobs to harass or assassinate loyal minions, to keep the heat off of us.
Lets up them on a figurative 'witch hunt' instead of a literal one.

I've got more but i figure that can wait until full scale war.
>>
>>2669271
> Look Shadowsword is back!

Actually I'm just really drunk.
>>
>>2669238
If Alex is a messiah or whatever he is, he would actually be important in getting the church on side. For most people in these types of eras, the faithcan have almost as much power over the people as the nobility. If the Church denounces Mordrax and his actions, his popular support would wither.
>>
>>2669271
>Leaders
We don't really have anyone with military experience, so I would suggest reviving generals from past ages to ensure they don't have any allegiance.
>supplies
We don't really have much of a stable income except for the pirates' booty. Aran doesn't have any resources or and there is no demand for our services either so we have nothing to export.
>Intelligence
Probably our most developed aspect so far.
we have spies in different lands but none of them seem to be in any position to learn of more than surface level stuff.
>Assassins
We do have the Kenku monks. We should immediately start sending some of them out to take out allies of the LeDoux family (we should know them).

There are a few possibilites for increasing our power.
First there's using our army to for raiding.
We can either go for lightning fast attacks in secure areas and disappear back into a portal to aran before there can be any response, then there's the possibilty of simply striking badly protected border towns, which would mean less risk but probably less loot as well.
If the circumstances are favourable we could even outright invade isolated communities like some small islands or even a very minor realm.

As for getting more heavy hitters, I advocate looking for either ancient human or moon elf ruins, because these two seem to be more powerful than anyone around right now and maybe we can even learn how the moon elves were initally defeated.

Stealing more power from that which never sleeps is also an option.
Dabbling with the eldritch is certainly not safe but we do know that the entity has or had at least one follower so we can assume it wont turn us insane immediately.
Maybe just ask Francis about it and disregard any warnings he gives us. Because what does he know?
>>
>>2669486
Use the not! Dark Eldar guys to work with the pirates to up their reaving. We can keep the WH off our backs about it by targeting towns to draw away troops from preparing for the war.

Also we should rob our family.
>>
>>2669492
I think we could tip off Supremia about a few of our family's prized posessions.
>>
Might be a good idea to send a fake spy to our family estate and let it be killed to secure our current spy's safety. I could imagine them being sure that we would send a spy but if we dont they may come to the conclusion that we already have.

Once behind a locked door, you place Isseal upon a table along with the rest of your clothing. You and Faye strip Amanda of her armor and proceed to do everything she has ever dreamt two beautiful women could do to her. Working in tandem, attacking every square inch of flesh with hungry tongues and massaging fingers, you bring her to the height of pleasure no less than three times. And all the while, you whisper sweet things into her ears, casting your spells and weaving your web of seduction. Amanda, the strong and noble paladin, having already fallen for Faye's delicious wiles, is delicious prey for you, helpless against your feint whispers.

She had regrets about her oaths; you erase them. She doubted her strength as a servant of her gods; you convince her that there is strength in serving her needs, and that she should heed them. Above all else, she was ashamed of the things she did to women and wanted women to do to her; you teach her how to be shameless. She had surrounded herself in walls of faith, discipline and duty, and you and Faye break through them all until she is nothing more than a moaning mess, begging for more, her body and mind craving your touch.

The experience is magnificent, an exquisite exercise of the powers you have obtained. Amanda was far from the purest being, but even so, a paladin of the First Faith reduced to her basest self, a lustful woman seeking only the touch of her lovers, is quite a catch. Now that you have broken through her barriers and, in effect, broken her, you must decide how you want to build her back up.

Knowing that you can brand someone without them knowing exactly what it is, as you did to Supremia, and driven by your curiosity to see if you would be able to do it to Amanda, you crawl up her body and cup both sides of her face.

"Do you love this?"

"I do," she breathlessly replies.

"Do you want more?"

"Yes!"

"I wish to give you a gift," you whisper, staring deeply into her eyes. "It will connect you with us. If you take it, you will be part of us on a deeper level, spiritually. And I promise you that if you take it, we will share many nights and more just like we have this morning."

She listens, enraptured with your words. "I desire it," she admits. "I desire you both..."

"Then you shall have us, if you willingly accept my gift."

"I accept it," she pleads. "Give it to me!"

You smile. "My lovely Amanda... I shall." You kiss her and brand her, placing it upon the small of her back, right above her previously-uptight ass. You smile against her lips as you feel the connection establish. Now she truly is yours, body and soul, even if she doesn't truly know what she's gotten herself into. But she'll learn, eventually.

Satisfied with having accomplished your goal of making a minion of the paladin, you slip out of the bed and straighten your hair as Faye busies herself with Amanda. Your mirror-twin is ceaseless in her appetite for carnal flesh, but you have your limits. Not for lack of energy, mind you, but there is much wearing on your mind. There is much business to be conducted in revenge, after all.

You dress once more, picking up Isseal, and leave the room. "Entertained?" you ask her.

"Intrigued," she replies. "Your technique is quite refined."

"I've had some practice," you nonchalantly reply. You would like to travel to Aran now, and deal with your cults. Having been distracted by Isseal and Amanda, you are ready to travel there, but wonder at who you should bring with you. You could take along Amanda, but it might be best to break things to her slowly, even if she has already accepted your mark.

You wait for several minutes, then find yourself finally growing impatient. You nearly storm back into the room to tell Faye to hurry up; the two of them, locked in an embrace of passion, quickly straighten themselves and promise to be out in a few minutes.

Ten minutes and a glass of wine later, you see them coming downstairs. You set aside the glass and put on a friendly face as you lean up to give Amanda a kiss goodbye. "Do come back soon," you whisper.

"I will," she says without hesitation, not realizing that she has been compelled to obey your commands. She leaves the tower and you look back at Faye who is trying to get her bodice even; half of her bust is hanging out. You sigh and walk up to her, grab both sides and yank upwards, managing to get it up to hug her large breasts. "I swear, Faye, it's like you have no sense of priority."

"Hey, it was your idea to sed---"

You clamp a hand over her mouth and look up the stairs. With your new sensitive hearing, you can tell that Alex is at the door, listening. You put a finger over your lips and tell her to be quiet. The last thing you need is Alex knowing that you and she fucked Amanda for the past hour and a half. He likely doesn't suspect anything, as he just moved up to the door, meaning he didn't hear anything up until this point.

Ushering Faye downstairs, you and she quickly use the teleportation circle and travel to Aran. You bring Isseal with you. Once within your dark realm, Faye continues, "YOUR idea to seduce her!"

"I know. And we marked her, I'm very pleased, and curious to know what it will be like for her to return to her duties with our brand. But still, time is short and we need to turn all of our attention towards empowering ourselves, our minions and our cults."

"We have her as a servant now," Faye shrugs. "I think it was worth it, and it was very enjoyable. We should do it more often, and with more!"

You don't feel like explaining to your perpetually-horny other self that you value revenge more than sex, and that the latter is a tool to get closer to the former. Instead, you turn away and summon Sheldrake.

"My queens," he says, stepping out of a nearby wall.

"Sheldrake, I wish to know about our cults."

"Shall I summon the Red One? Your council has the most interraction with the people through the representatives of the cults."

"Make it so."

You and Faye sit upon your thrones as you await for the Red One to appear. She marches into the throne room on swift and bare feet, stopping to kneel before you both. Her cloak, still tattered and bright crimson, conceals almost all of her form save her hands, feet and face when she looks up.

"You have summoned me, o Witch Queens?"

You lean forward slightly. "Yes. It is high time I got to know some of my cults. How has my initiative for promoting fertility amongst the people been faring?"

She looks up. "Your desire has caused the cult known as the Witch Queen's Daughters to become the largest in Aran."

"Tell me of them."

"They gather in the Chapel of the Longing Shadow, and their congregation is... well... not very strictly formal. Their leader, a woman known as the Matchless Companion, oversees their gatherings, some of which are in the hundreds."

"And what do they accomplish?"

"They are a sex cult, my lady."

"...And?"

"And they have lots and lots of sex, usually in large groups."

From the corner of your eye, you catch Faye bounce up and down slightly. "I think we should visit them!" she says with excitement.

You hold up a hand. "Patience... What do they do for me, exactly?"

"Ever since you have proclaimed that you support rites of fertility and healthy babies, they have strived towards making more children for your realm. While I have not... personally... attended their gatherings, it is my understanding that they have many rituals and spells that enhance... copulation."

You smile at her attempts to remain professional while speaking of such a profane topic. "Do go on. What are these rituals like?"

The Red One clears her throat. "Well... I have had it described to me by their leader that the initiated of the cult, once with child, are taken care of with as much luxury as they can afford. They are waited on, hand and foot, for they have been blessed to further the goals of their queens."

"Do they pay a tithe?"

"In a manner of speaking... They offer the children as tribute. To other cults, and to our palace. The rest they keep for themselves, to be raised as future acolytes for their rites."

You cock a brow. "What do we do with these children?"

"Whatever needs be done. Some are sent to families without children, some are to be raised here in your citadel as future servants, and others find their own place in society."

You sit back and cross your legs. "I am glad that they are gaining in popularity, but how can that be their tithe? How fast could they possibly be producing children?"

"I am told by the Matchless Companion that they have rituals that not only ensure multiple children result from a single pregnancy, but that they have a ritual which shortens it."

At that, Faye is extremely interested. "You don't say?" she asks, then looks at you. "I think we should visit them," she says again.

You give a small, dismissive wave. "There's no need to visit them yet. Just please pass along a message to them to keep up the good work."

Faye pouts, and the Red One nods. "What else would you like to know?"

Placing your chin in your palm, you think for a moment. "Do we have any cults that produce warriors? Fanatics, at the very least?"

She thinks for a moment. "The Night Temple exists to train custodial guardians. They protect areas of importance, and are hired by other cults as protection against their rivals. As you recall, sometimes the cults fight amongst themselves, and with the new beings you are bringing to the realm, sometimes vital areas are in need of guards. But they are also custodians, keeping clean the streets, temples and other public places. I believe your citadel employs several of them to guard its lower depths against intrusion."

Sheldrake turns towards you. "This is true, but we pay them nothing. To serve the Umbral Citadel directly is an honor for them."

"I am pleased to learn this. Are there any others?"

The Red One continues. "The Cabal of Darkness trains warlocks who follow the shadow pact. I understand their numbers are few, but they are powerful in their own right. The Faithful of Aran are one of the cults that create shades out of those willing to become one. The Midnight Souls and the Servants of Shadow are both cults that deal with shadow demons that lurk in the deepest reaches of Aran, and through them wield power, and there are the Hearers of Silence and the Umbrian Brotherhood. Both of them deal with entities from beyond, but are not warriors."

You nod as you listen. "Anything else of note?"

"There is the Phantom Church, who deal with the dead and spirits. There may be power to be found there. There are also the Penumbrians, who perform sacrificial rituals in your name."

"I recall them... they were battling with another cult over a church, and I told them to share it. How goes that?"

"As I understand it, there have been no incidents."

"Good."

"What about cults that try to improve Aran?"

"The Children of Twilight, those who previously clashed with the Penumbrians, work to grow and distribute food amongst your realm. Their leader, the Fifth Chanter, has spoken much with the council of his attempts to feed all of Aran. He has gardens of mushrooms and other plants that grow without light, as well as a slaughterhouse which produces meat."

You tap your fingers on the arm of your throne. "What manner of meat?"

"I believe he has access to a species of large docile bird that he breeds and slaughters. From what I understand, they are blind and fat creatures, aimlessly wandering and breeding until they die."

"And are they tasty?"

"I have often found the flesh to be bland and without taste."

You look over at Faye. "We should get some spices in here or something. Has Angello sent that contract over yet?"

"Not yet," she replies, sharpening her nails with a file. She sounds bored, but you ignore her tone.

You turn back to her. "I think we could use some more animals in Aran."

"Aran is not a healthy place for animals. People live here because they can endure."

You sigh. "Well, how do we go about making this place better?"

Sheldrake cocks a brow. "A sun might help."

You look over at him. "A sun?"

He straightens. "I believe suns cause things to grow."

You hold out an empty hand in a shrugging gesture. "Yes, but that's not all of it. I'm not much for agriculture, I admit, but I know you need water as well. Does Aran have water?" Sheldrake nods. "Well, that's a start."

Suddenly, an idea pops into your head. "Druids! We should get some druids, have them green this place up. Make it habitable for animals that aren't fat, blind birds. I know a druid back in the mortal realm, I should talk to her about it."

The Red One waits for you to finish. "In addition to the Children of Twilight, there is the Antumbrian Order. They also seek to increase the population of your realm and... bridge the gap between your various new immigrant species."

"...Meaning?"

"They, too, are a sex cult, but with a different kind of goal. They specialize in crossbreeding. Evidently several of your goblins have joined the cult, to mixed results."

"...Was that a pun?"

"No, my mistress. I mean results between completely successful and an utter failure. The Antumbrian Order does not have as many numbers as the Witch Queen's Daughters, but work with what they have."

"Why crossbreeding, specifically?"

"I do not quite know, my queen."

"These warrior cults you mentioned. The warlocks, the shades, the shadow demons... I want to know more."

The Red One stands, evidently tired of kneeling. She tilts her head. "May I presume to inquire as to the meaning behind suddenly taking such an interest in your cults, my queen?"

Faye looks up. "Is it your place to ask such questions?"

You hold up your hand. "I'll allow it," you say. "After all, I'm interested in getting to the heart of the matter. What I require is power, Red One. I want to know which of my cults can benefit me the most. I would like all of them turned towards my purpose, but time is short. There is a crisis brewing upon the mortal plane and I must stop it, for the object of my vengeance is at its heart." You pause for a moment. "And I suppose helping improve my public image would also be useful. And... saving the innocent, and what have you."

The Red One smiles. "I see. If I may be so bold, my queen, I think there is another avenue of power you haven't considered, or if you have considered it, you know not the way to unlock it."

"Speak."

"Your cults worship you both as they would a god -- or goddess -- but there is one quality that a deity possesses that you do not."

You look at Sheldrake, who stands silent and immobile. Meeting her gaze, you ask, "Well? What is it?"

She puts a hand up to her ear. "You do not listen. They pray, they invoke your name, they perform rites for you, but you are concerned only with yourselves."

"Careful," you warn her. "Choose your words carefully."

"I am," she says, taking a step closer. "I do not fault you, my queens. You could ignore them for all time, but the true thing that turns a mortal to a god, if not literally than in the minds of those who worship them, is that on occasion a god listens and answers. A mortal from your world may pray for rain for his crops, or the death of an enemy. Sometimes these things do not come... but sometimes they do."

You hold up your palms. "I'm afraid I don't understand. I can't hear anyone."

"Because you have never tried to listen. There are thousands within your realm, and though not all of them pray, they turn their thoughts towards you. There is an untapped resevoir of power there, of thought and will and hope. You can strengthen it, and eventually, tap into it. This is what turns a mortal into something more... something divine."

You listen to her words, and are silent for a few seconds. Taking a contemplative breath, you purse your lips and then ask, "How?"

"Simply try," she advises. "There are many in your realm. Surely at least one is praying to you, right now. Listen... and if you desire, answer."

You look at Faye, who seems curious, but is waiting for you to try first. You shrug. "Well, here goes nothing."

Closing your eyes, you listen. For about twenty seconds, you hear nothing but your own breathing. Just when you are about to get frustrated and give up, possibly berate the Red One for making you waste your time in so foolish a manner, you hear something very faint and far away. Crying.

Your brow furrows as you try to focus on that noise. It grows louder in your head, until it is as though you are right in front of the person who is crying. It is a woman, that much you know from the voice alone, but somehow you know more... You know she is holding a child, a baby boy, and that he is dying.

"Oh, Witch Queens, I beg of you," she says between sobs. "My child is sick and there is no cure. Please, he is all I have in this world, he is my world, my everything... If he should die, I, I would fade, I know it, I would lose all that anchors me... Please, I know there is so much, so much despair and quiet, but I beseach thee, do not abandon my child... I know he could grow up and be a loyal, strong servant! Don't let him go, please, please..."

Your eyes snap open and you let out a gasp, bringing a hand to your chest. "What was that?" you whisper.

"Was it one of pain?" the Red One asks. "Listening to one such as that can cause you to feel as they do. Sometimes beings pray for good health and good fortune, before a meal or before bed, or even at times of worship, and they make these prayers in safety and comfort, but many pray in times of pain."

Faye leans over her chair's arm to give you a concerned look. "What's wrong?"

"Just... just give me a moment," you say, taking out your orb. You focus on where you heard and felt the woman, and within moments, you are staring at her through your orb. Raising your hand, you hone in on the child, staring at the small creature. Working your magic and weaving it through the orb and across Aran, you cast the only spell you know relating to disease and poison: your Gift of Beautiful Purity, meant to purify his body.

Within seconds, it seems to work. You observe the child for any changes, and upon casting your spell of detect weakness, determine that it no longer has illness within its veins, as its only weakness is the fact that it is a small and fragile baby. On top of everything else, the baby's hair and skin have never looked better.

You banish the image from the orb and sit back with a sigh. "Alright. I cured a baby that was sick. When do I become a god?"

The Red One chuckles. "Not overnight, my lady. Nobody became a god by curing only one sick child."

After thinking for a moment, you look up. "Is there sickness in our realm?"

"There is sickness where there are living beings," the Red One replies. "But Aran has a draining effect on most life. Those who fail to resist it fade away. It is one of despair."

"Yes, but that child was physically ill. So I ask again: is there an illness? Can we get rid of it? I don't need my people sick, not when I might have other uses of them."

"I shall investigate this matter," the Red One promises. "Is there any other means of which I may be of service to you, my queens?"

Sirena justifies everything she does with the idea being that there is a chance it will factor into her favor for her revenge. To this end she is both selfish and selfless at different times, helping herself and helping others. Rarely has she ever gone out of her way to punish someone that did nothing to her, but she also isn't fond of unwarranted suffering and collateral damage.

I think a big part of it is that from the beginning of the quest's events, she has been accused of being a traitor and forced into hiding. This has caused her to do things she may not normally have done, and to better hide herself, she has performed good deeds, but she's never done anything purely out of the good of her own heart: she's always aimed to get something for herself out of it, be it power, pleasure, or a piece on the chess board for future use.

She is selfish and manipulative, ultimately seeing all others as beneath her and looking out for number one, but on some level she is a realist and recognizes that you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and her exile has made her realize that it is good to have friends (and minions).

"Yes... I want as many cult leaders as are available to come to the Umbral Citadel, now."

She seems a bit surprised. "My queens, on such short notice, not all of the cults will--"

"That's fine," you cut her off. "I want to know which ones will come when I immediately call them. That will give me a good first impression."

"...Understood. It shall be done."

Less than an hour later, and the first cult leader arrives. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it is the leader of the Witch Queen's Daughters, the woman known only as the Matchless Companion. She is beautiful, undoubtedly so, clad in thin black silk and brought before you by her personal attendants, also women of great beauty. Her skin is pale like that of moonlight, her eyes a sultry and warm amber color, and her hair is like threads of gold. She appears human, but has something of a strange, ethereal quality to her.

When she is presented, she is carried upon a couch of soft cushions, and set before you. She strikes quite a figure, looking as if the silk she wears could slip at any moment to expose her intimate flesh. As she looks upon you, she parts her lips and bows her head, rising from her relaxed position to properly pay her respects.

"My queens, it is an honor."

"You're certainly a sight," you say with an intriqued grin. "You are the Matchless Companion? Quite a title, but I can see that none in Aran that I have witnessed match your beauty... save for myself and my twin."

She smiles. "My queens, your beauty does not match my own... it exceeds it. I am but your humble servant, and my apperance is as the Daughters have made it. The Matchless Companion is a title that many have shared, for it is held by only the most beautiful among us, until our beauty fades."

"I see... and then, you are replaced?"

"It is a viscious cycle and one that reminds us that life is not forever, and that all things fade. The face of our cult must be only the most youthful and striking, for it is an effective means of attracting new members."

"I can see where they are coming from," Faye says.

Honestly it would be just as bad if say the Warrior cult leader was hanging around instead of doing his job.

The important thing is that they are out there fulfilling our will instead of trying to curry favor in our court. We will be often absent in the future as it is.

That way we don't have to repeat ourselves, and they'll get a good idea of each others roles and abilities too.

"Tell me of your group's powers and spells. I am interested."

"We have swelled in number ever since you gave your favor to our efforts," she says, "and with growth came new knowledge. We always possessed certain rituals and rites, but never have we had so many to test them upon, and so we have perfected some that before only had the most minor of effects."

"Such as?"

"Rituals that increase fertility, lower inhibition, extend stamina, lower rest times between sessions, make coupling easier and the body more ready for it. Furthermore, we also practice several non-magical methods of 'setting the mood' as it were. Certain scents, oils, and other substances heighten the experience. Of course, nothing compares to the pleasure one receives from fulfiling their dedication to you, my queens, merely by engaging in the most primal of acts. A union of body, mind and soul."

"I see..."

Faye leans in. "I have been told you know of a spell that hastens pregnancy. Is this true?"

"There are some rituals we haven't been able to master yet," she admits. "But we are trying, and we have no shortage of test subjects. That ritual in particular, however, is... difficult to test."

She wrinkles her nose a bit and furrows her brow. "Why?"

"Performed incorrectly, there is a chance of losing the child. As our purpose is to provide children for you, my queens, we have only very cautiously and conservatively attempted this ritual, and it does not always work. Sometimes it fails and the mother loses the child. It is a devastating thing... they feel as though they have failed you."

Faye thinks for a moment. "You just need someone with more magical experience and raw power," she says. "Like me!" She looks over at you. "I want to try it. I think I can master it."

You meet her gaze with a frown. "You're not exactly known for being the most patient."

"But I've already studied up on this kind of ritual! Remember, I told you about it in Lady Silverwind's estate? I know the basics, and they have the materials. I'm great with rituals, I summon extraplaner entities all the time. Let me try."

"You're a big girl, Faye. You can make your own decisions."

She shrugs. "Alright. But later. Looks like someone new is walking in..."

You follow her gaze towards the entrance of the throne room, and in strides a figure in full plate armor, painted black with silver trimmings. His helm completely covers his face, allowing only a narrow slit through which to see, and a thick, dark cloak hangs from his shoulders. He approaches silently, his armor sounding heavy yet somewhat subdued, though you hear each step. Strangely, your hyper-sensitive ears do not detect any breathing coming from beneath his helm.

There is something strange about this figure. He looks almost familiar...

The Matchless Companion has her attendants move her to the side as he walks up to kneel before you, lowering himself onto a knee. When he speaks, his voice does not sound muffled by his helm, but rather an echo.

"My queens, I bid you greetings. I am the Ardent Steward, lord of the Night Temple, first guardian of Aran, and at your service."

You lean forward in curiosity. "Well met, steward. Do you have a name?"

"It has been lost to time."

"How old are you?"

He looks up, and now that he is close, you can see more clearly into his helm's visor; there is only darkness within. "That, too, has been lost to time. I do not age."

"What manner of being are you?"

"I am what you see before you," he says, reaching up to remove his helmet. You eyes widen slightly as he does, for once he sets it in his lap, there is nothing. No head, only an empty shell.

"A spirit, then?" Faye asks. "Or an animated suit of armor?"

"I was the guardian of the first Witch Queen," he explains himself. "I was not created by her magic, but came to be her protector in her youth. When she ascended to the Throne of Midnight, I followed, and vowed to protect her realm. She is gone, but her realm remains, and so the Night Temple endures. We are guardians, silent watchmen, and custodians."

"You are warriors?"

"We are defenders."

"I see."

You study him from head to toe, taking note of every detail of his intricate armor. "Your armor looks familiar, but I can't quite place it..."

"I have lived in Aran for so long that I have become a part of it. Some Witch Queens have used this essence that the realm has taken from me to form a protective suit of armor around themselves."

You snap your fingers. "That's it! The Armor of Aran, my power. I was never aware that it created a copy of your armor."

"Not quite a copy, but a projection of my living essence that has infused with the realm, a physical manifestation of it."

"Fascinating... I wish to know more."

It seems he is about to reply, but he halts and turns his head. You look towards the entrance and see someone approaching, but their footsteps make no noise. It is an elf, which would explain the gift of stealth, but there is something else that accompanies him, a strange whispering sound that you cannot quite place, but it unnerves you slightly.

The elf is tall and thin, with cracked skin in places and bright eyes. He is dressed in ornate armor, but the armor seems enshrouded by an aura of darkness that has robbed it of any lustrous quality it may have once possessed.

The Ardent Steward rises. "My queens, I would caution you. This one listens to many who do not serve you."

"I will introduce myself, hollowed one," he says in a somewhat shrill voice. He stands before you and Faye, holds his hands out wide, and bows. "Witch Queens of Aran, I am Shreverthos, the Noble Attendant, master of the Servants of Shadow."

"And what do you do?"

He rises. "We act as intermediaries between your people and the demons of shadow that lurk below. As the armor so rudely pointed out, the shadow demons do not serve you, but they do not act against you. Your realm is an ideal place for them and their growth, and they use it as a base of operations."

"And what do they bring to my realm that warrants keeping them around?"

"They offer much, and we act as agents that oversee their deals with your people. They are often approached by those who wish to obtain something, and the demons can make it happen if they are willing and able to pay the price of their services. In exchange for allowing them to live within your realm, they pay large sums of gold. Our organization contributes more coin to your treasury than any other."

>What is the price these demons demand of those who seek their services?

"I am wary of demons," you say with a stern tone.

"As you should be, my queen. That is why we do what we do, to ensure that the delicate relationship between your realm and them is maintained. They like to see it as mutually beneficial."

"I must say that I question the judgment of any demon, when they seek only to benefit themselves. How can I be certain they are not acting against my interests?"

"We serve you, and we ensure that all deals that are made with them do not go against your desires and the safety of the realm. There are, on occasion, individuals who would seek to damage this place they call home. We ensure they never get the chance to meet with any demons. In addition to this, no one group is more adept at warding demons away. Many places in Aran cannot be traversed by the demons because of spells that we have cast. Not only do people come to us to speak with the demons, but they also come to us for protection against them."

"You don't say." You are about to ask more of him when two more figures enter the throne room.

They do not appear to be together, but merely arrived at the same time. One is a woman dressed all in white, who appears at once both physical and non-physical at different moments, as though she is phasing in and out of reality. Her flowing dress seems to hover above the ground, spreading out in a spectral manner, with wispy tendrils of fabric continually caught in some unknown breeze.

The other is perhaps just as strange, if not stranger. He is in what appears to be some kind of coffin or sarcophagus with only his head exposed. He is pushed from behind by a tall man wrapped from head to toe in obscuring straps of leather.

They present themselves; the lady bows, and the man does not, because he is unable to. He is able to bow his head only.

You give them a respectfully interested glance. "And you are...?"

The woman goes first. "My queens, I am the Speaker of the Dead for the Phantom Church. It is my place to commune with lost spirits, guide them to your worship, and give them purpose both in life and death."

The man now speaks. "And I am the Celibate Lord of the Antumbrian Order!"

"Is there a reason you are locked away like you are?" you ask, noting the series of chains and locks wrapped around his tomb.

"I must lead my people with a clear mind, untouched by the pleasures of the world."

"Ah... That's right, you must be that other sex cult," you say. You look at the Matchless Companion. "Do you know each other?"

The much more beautiful being scoffs. "Theirs is a strange cult, my lady. They seek only to create hybrids, while we do not restrict ourselves as such. Our rules are that all couplings are sacred, while theirs say that only two who are different may breed."

"That is not true!" he defends himself. "Our work is about combining the best qualities of different parents, be they of the same species or not! Someone who is strong and someone who is fast may have a child who is both!"

She rolls her eyes. "When you create children out of experimentation rather than love, all you are making are freaks."

You hold up a hand. "Enough, I don't desire debate about who makes the most children around here or what kind of children they are." Two more figures enter the throne room. "Hold those thoughts for later."

The first introduces himself as the Bloody-Crowned Lord of the Penumbrians before shedding his dark cloak to reveal a body covered in scars. "Long have we given ourselves to those who have shared your throne," he says. "We shed blood in your name."

"You commit sacrifices?"

"Willingly so. Our order sees it as the highest honor and those who are selected are given up to you as the ultimate payment."

You look at the one who entered alongside him, a woman dressed in a dark and concealing outfit that looks professional, neat and clean. Her hair is well-kept, her skin unblemished, and her eyes strangely without color. She wears a pair of spectacles and stands completely straight.

When she speaks, it is in a soft, monotone voice. "I am the Witness to Nothing, of the Umbrian Brotherhood."

"And what do your people do?"

"We study the infinite reaches of the void between worlds and the arcane energies of the eldritch machines and beings who dwell there."

"Ah, those who see beyond. I know a thing or two about such beings, and how dangerous and maddening it can be to study them."

"We are removed and detatched from such frailties as consciousness and emotion. It dulls the effect the void has upon the mind, and acts as a safeguard against its entities when we make contact with them. We record all knowledge in texts that are kept in our library and yours. Our research has been very extensive."

At that moment, Sheldrake approaches you from the side. "I believe this is all of the cult leaders who were able to arrive on short notice, my queens. There are a few who are indisposed and I sense no further beings approaching the citadel."

"This will have to do for now," you say, looking at them.

I will not have Aran's people killing each other when they can be killing its enemies, and make no mistake, we do have enemies."

You hold up your hand and continue, "You all proclaim that you serve the Witch Queens, and soon you will be called upon to prove your loyalty. Very soon, there will come a time when I will need to call upon the power of Aran to fulfil my ultimate goal: revenge. I will need an army, I will need power, and I will need resources. Once I have obtained my revenge and destroyed my hated enemy, I will focus on bettering Aran, and those who have stood by me will be greatly rewarded."

Faye also stands up. "What she said!"

The Ardent Steward kneels. "The Night Temple awaits your command, my queens." The others all follow his example, each professing that their powers and people are yours to command.

You lower your hand and place both upon your hips. "Those who desire my immediate favor may tell me what power they can bestow upon me to further my quest for revenge."

Nearby, the Celibate Lord cries out, "By the Thrones of Midnight! What monster would do such a thing?!"

"The one I seek vengeance upon, incidentally. The common folk do not yet know of this curse, but when they learn, it will be chaos. I must cure it and undo the plot of my nemesis before he uses the coming chaos to his advantage."

"Got it!" she says. Clasping her hands together, she looks at them and asks, "So, where are the sex pits?"

As they walk off, you look at the remaining four cult leaders. "Now then. What do you all have to offer me?"

The Ardent Steward says, "The Midnight Temple can provide you with trained guardians, arms and armor."

"Oh, that's good," you say. "I actually am in need of weapons and armor to outfit a group of barbarians in the north. Anything else?"

"We also have rituals of punishment and imprisonment. Those who trespass and commit other crimes in Aran answer to our judgment."

"Would you happen to have a large prison?"

"We do."

"Fantastic. I might be in need of bodies later on. How about the rest of you?"

You take out the coin inhabited by Eremba, your raven spirit. "What can you do with this?"

She takes hold of it, placing it in her palm and tracing its sides with her fingers. "This one is a tortured soul... but we can empower it."

You face the Speaker of the Dead. "So, what's your deal, exactly? Are you alive or dead?"

"I am between life and death," she says, holding up her hand. It is solid, then becomes translucent like a thin sheet. "My spirit has no body, and my body has no spirit. In this way I am both physical and not."

"And what does this afford you?"

"The ability to act as the ultimate intermediary between the living and the dead. Many souls linger after death, unable to accept what they are, unable to move on and find greater purpose. Many who fade away in Aran are at risk of losing themselves forever. The Phantom Church offers salvation to those desperate souls who seek it."

"How many spirits do you possess?"

"Thousands," she says. "But many of them are harmless, having died peacefully. For your purposes, you would desire dangerous phantoms, poltergeists, banshees, spectres and wraiths, those who died in despair, in pain, in shame. They are the ones who have the most power."

"Why is that, exactly?"

"When a spirit loses its physical bonds, all it has left are its emotions. Those who died under the most traumatic, cruel and unfair means often become the most violent, and through this passion comes power, often in many different forms. Some possess the living, some develop abilities to manipulate their environment, and some even gain new physical forms, powered by their hate and anguish."

"Do you have any such spirits?"

"Some, yes," she nods. "And some can be made, at your request. What do you desire, my queen?"

"I'm not terribly picky. What I desire is a legion of spirits that I could call upon."

"That can be done."

You think for a moment. "Oh, you mentioned spirits that can possess? I want some of those. They may come in handy."

"Then that, too, shall be done. Such possessions are difficult, but there are ways to simplify the process. For example, a spirit may inhabit an article of clothing, such as a ring or a hat. When worn, the spirit would take over the body of the wearer. There are other methods, but that is the simplest. It is also the easiest to counter, as all it takes is removal of the article."

"I see... what are some other methods? I haven't studied much into this field."

"Some spirits are powerful enough to possess a living being on their own. Others can be placed into a living vessel with a ritual of binding. Both of these would require an exorcism to remove from the victim. But the most permanent possession is that of a willing subject." She holds up the coin. "For example, this spirit would continue to exist separately from a living vessel, but if you were to take it within yourself, its powers would be yours."

"But would that threaten my own soul?"

"Not at all. The spirit is subservient to you, and your will is more than strong enough to survive such a ritual. The spirit would merge with your own, adding to your collective consciousness, but everthing that is 'you' would still remain."

>Empower the spirit, but keep it separate.

"Turn your efforts towards creating that legion. As for the spirit, empower it as you said you could. I do not wish to merge with it. I have enough going on inside of me. Speaking of which..."

You turn towards the Witness to Nothing, staring into her dark eyes. "Tell me what you know of That Which Never Sleeps."

Her face betrays no emotion. "It is a vast and ancient being, a creature wrought of living shadow and oil. Its influence is corrupting, for it seeks to consume all flesh and cover the realms in itself. It is without shape, like a shadow in the dark. If it were allowed into the mortal plane, like black water dripping into a pristine pool, it would eventually turn whatever it touches into itself. It is unceasing, singular, devoid of reason as we would know it."

You bring a hand up to your chest and look down at your skin. 'Could that be happening within me at this very moment? How long until it threatens to consume me from within?'

Lowering your hand, you think about that dark realm you once traveled to, deep within the underground tomb in that cemetary. If what she says is true, much like Alex once warned you, even the tiniest fragment within could threaten to spread to your entire being, and then you would be nothing more than an extension of that... thing.

She just said it's a corrupting influence that threatens to consume the world if it ever gets loose. Plus, part of me gets the sneaking suspicion that removing this dark taint on Sirena would remove a limiter on her; it's a wonder that she hasn't been consumed yet, and that could be chalked up to her natural power hold it in check.

Sirena can take whatever dick she likes, but an eldritch dick is not among them, not this one at least.

"Could such an entity be controlled?"

"That, I do not know."

"Could it be destroyed?"

"Everything can be destroyed."

"Yes, but is it feasable?"

"That is difficult to say. If it is brought into a physical plane of existence and severely crippled, it may be forced to return to its home dimension. There, and only there, could it be permanently destroyed, but not without great magic. Alternatively, if it were to be captured somehow, and its power harnessed... that would be one method of controlling it. But it would take just as great a power as it would to destroy it."

"I see... Problems for later, I think. What manner of rituals does your cult have access to?"

"In studying the beyond, we have learned many things. The most common are gateways to other realms, both large and small."

"Teleportation and portals?"

"And summoning creatures from beyond. Our research uses such portals to travel to other realms and commune with beings who live there, things that defy description."

"How do you protect yourself on such a journey?"

"We have spells and protective measures that specifically target aberrant lifeforms, those that originate from non-physical realms. Aberrations are particularly susceptable to certain types of magic."

"I really can't afford a visit at the moment, I'm terribly busy. See that they are brought before me and I'll decide which ones I like the most."

Satisfied, you turn towards the representatives of the Penumbrians and Night Temple. "As I was saying earlier, I wish for more power. Steward, you have already informed me of what your temple offers. What of the Penumbrians?"

"We will provide blood and corpses for your rituals," he offers. "If you desire, we may perform rites that will directly empower you! We need only your permission."

"What exactly does it entail?"

"We have many rituals that you would find extremely useful," he begins to explain. "Perhaps you desire to be physically stronger, or eternally youthful?"

"I already have that second one. Physical strength has its appeal, but what about my magic?"

"Our sacrifices can convert the souls into raw power for you. This power could be used to pay the price of a ritual, or infused into your being to increase your overall power."

Shreverthos steps forward. "You know who likes souls? Demons. If you desire, the sacrifices of the Penumbrians could be used to barter with the shadow demons."

"Our souls should go to the Thrones of Midnight," he says to the elf.

Shreverthos shrugs. "In a manner of speaking, they would."

OR if we can get a system going the helps us manage all dealing to check if they align with our interests then that would be good too.
I want to make sure there is some type of middle man between them and the general public, whether it's the cult themselves, us, or someone else is irreverent.
Either way they should be able to stay.

I think it's worth pointing out that these shadow demons you're planning to cut off or kick out are the single biggest contributors to Aran's coffers and economy. You kick out the demons, you kick literally the biggest revenue flow of the realm out from underneath the citadel. Even if you don't like demons, you do like money.

You face the elf fully and give him your command. "As I have said before, I am wary of demons and their influence. While I am not above making a deal with a devil, I will never make a deal with a demon. However, I recognize that they are well-established in Aran, and may continue to remain. But I desire all dealings with Aran's native population to cease."

He reacts in surprise, then seems concerned. "With all due respect, I fear they may not like that very much. While they have used Aran as a base for operations across many realms, long have they enjoyed the freedom to interract with those of your realm who seek their services. I remind you, my queen, that they are the greatest contributor to your treasury; we collect their gold and it serves as our tithe to you. They are accustomed to the arrangement, for it has been long-standing."

You cup your chin in thought. "Hmmmm..."

He continues, "And there is another cult, whose representatives are not here, who definitely would object. The Midnight Souls. Their members bond with the demons and become agents of them. We have no authority over the Midnight Souls, their dealings are their own."

"They bond with the shadow demons? As in merge with them?"

"Indeed. While we act as intermediaries between your people and the shadow demons, the Midnight Souls openly serve them."

"And what do they do for us, exactly? What tithe do the Midnight Souls provide?"

"For past Witch Queens, they have acted as spies, using the powers of the shadow demons to provide intelligence from various realms, as well as assassins."

"I have other means for that," you say, "ones that don't force me to deal with demons."

>I want the Midnight Souls disbanded and all dealings with Shadow Demons to cease.

Since we're already in Aran, we'll deal with Usai and the eggs.

...

Traveling to the incubation chamber, kept warm and moist in replicated swamp-like conditions by the magic of your servitors, you open the doors and feel the stench of the nest waft into your nostrils. You cringe and hold your nose until you adjust, then step inside. 'Just like when I had to rescue Krom,' you remember.

Xerro, the incubation chamber's overseer, immediately takes notice of you and hops over. "Sirena! Sirena! Xerro watch over eggs! Xerro do good job!"

"Have you been remembering to turn them over and ensure they are properly kept half-submerged in the water and muck?"

He nods eagerly. "Xerro know how to take care of eggs. Xerro is best mommy-dragon!"

You pat him on the head, then look over at Boris. Your first minion stands in front of a cell, guarding its sole occupant and ensuring he does not escape. "And what of our guest?"

"Xerro has been feeding him, but he does not like Xerro."

"We'll see how long that lasts." You stand up and approach your abomination, half-minotaur and half-various human corpses. Boris's dead eyes reflect no emotion, but he still obeys your commands all the same. He stands aside so that you may look upon Usai, the greenspawn lizardling that tried to stop you from stealing his mother's eggs.

"Oh, you're back," he says, sitting in the corner of his cell. A half-eaten plate of food is near one of his feet.

"Aw, don't pretend you didn't miss me," you say, putting on a sultry tone. He avoids making eye contact. "Are you ready to come out of your cage?"

He is quiet. You would rather have him on your side, as he shows great intelligence for a greenspawn, if a lack of maturity and experience, but if he won't cooperate, there are always more ways he could be useful.

You give him a look and lean your head back in a haughty fashion. "You grew up in a swamp, eating toads and mushrooms. I grew up in a mansion and was apprentice to the most powerful wizard in the land. Do you truly think you can defy me with simple silence?"

You don't give him a chance to answer. He turns to look at you, but that's when you hook him. With your domineering gaze, you force him even further back into the corner. "You small, insignificant little lizard. I am the Witch Queen of Aran. Your swamp and your mother mean nothing to me, and if you don't make yourself useful, you mean nothing to me as well."

You command Boris to open the cage, and you enter it, all the while blasting him with your gaze ability. Placing both hands on either side of his trembling head, you speak with him. "You will serve me."

"I will!" he says, wanting to look away but he cannot. "Please, enough!"

You stop using your power upon him and simply stare into his eyes. "Now, to find a use for you."

Looking at the nearby eggs, you turn back to him and say, "When these eggs hatch, you will be responsible for raising and training your brothers and sisters. And in time, you will breed, and pass along your superior intelligence to a new generation of eggs."

"Breed?" he asks with wide eyes.

"Yes," you say, putting a hand under his chin. "And if you a good little lizard, you will be given a good mate. Perhaps many. Serve me well, and be rewarded. Or else."

You let him go and step back into the chamber, allowing Boris to let him out of the cage. "You will not be allowed to leave the citadel," you tell him. "You will still be provided meals, and if you enjoy it you may spend your time at the library. But above all else you are responsible for these eggs. Work with Xerro on this. He is your boss; I've known him longer."

Usai points at the kobold. "Him? My boss?"

The little kobold takes out a whip from seemingly nowhere and cracks it at Usai. "Turn over eggs!" he commands him, and Usai immediately gets to work. You leave the incubation chamber with a smile on your face.

Outside, in the hallway, you encounter a curious sight. There is a dark elf on her hands and knees, cleaning the floor. It takes you a moment to realize that it is Alicia, Supremia's sister, the drow you stole all memories from. It seems that she has been put to work as a maid.

As you approach her, she lowers her head and shies away from your gaze. She knows not who or even what she is, only that you are her master, and once punished her severely for something she cannot remember.

You kneel next to her and she averts her eyes. Taking hold of her chin, you turn her to face you and stare into her crimson eyes.

"Alicia. How are you feeling?"

"I feel... nothing," she replies, seemingly nervous.

"Afraid?"

She numbly moves her lips for a moment. "I don't know how, or why, I am. I don't know who I am..." She looks down at the floor. "The floor is dusty... It's very dusty..."

She scrubs at it some more.

Slowly, you brush a strand of her stark-white hair behind her dark blue ear. "Do you know who I am?"

"You are the master, the queen," she whispers. "You... You are... I don't know your name."

A tear rolls down her cheek, which she hastily wipes away.

"Why are you sad?"

"I don't know," she answers, seemingly on the verge of crying much more. "I feel like something was taken from me, but I don't know what it is. I feel like... like everything was taken from me..."

'What a poor creature,' you think to yourself. 'To live in such a state. I did take everything from her, every childhood memory, every lesson learnt, every feeling she ever felt. But she was my enemy. I had no choice. Ah, well.' You stand up, fold your arms, and consider what to do with the mind-wiped drow.

'Perhaps someone could teach her something. A job or a skill, how to function as a normal person once more. Now that she doesn't have all that dark elf baggage their entire race seems to perpetually carry, she could even be a champion to inspire and reintegrate her people back into society!'

You look over at the opposite end of the hall. "You missed a spot over there," you tell her, and then keep on walking, though your ears pick up her quiet sobs for some distance. You whistle to yourself to drown them out. If some better use for the drow comes up in the future, perhaps then you'll consider her, but for now she is nothing.

"Sheldrake," you speak his name, and he appears. "Have we received that contract from Angelo yet?"

"Not yet, your magnificence."

"See if we can't pester him about it. I don't know his home plane, but Faye does. If she isn't terribly busy, I'd like her to get in contact with him."

"As you wish." He fades into the wall and vanishes.

You decide to take a stroll out of the Umbral Citadel and into the streets of Aran, taking six of your trained honor guard with you as protection. As you walk down the streets, the enshrouded natives gather to bear witness. Some cheer, some remain silent, some hide in fear.

A figure runs out of the crowd, towards your procession, holding a bundle in her arms. Your guards draw swords and point them at her, but you raise your hand and command them to hold back. The woman, whom you recognize as the one whose child your cured, falls on her knees before you.

"Mighty Witch Queen! My child... I prayed that you would cure him, and you have! He is no longer sick!"

You smile down at her. "You are welcome. What is the child's name?"

"Zariam," she replies, holding him up for your eyes. The pudgy little baby is asleep.

You raise a finger and place it upon his forehead. "I give him my blessing. May he grow strong and swift, that he may one day serve me as a valuable warrior."

"Thank you, my queen, thank you! He will! I will see to it!" She hugs the child close to her chest and runs back into the crowd, which has now become a sea of whispers. Your sensitive ears pick out many things spoken between the awed people.

"Her prayers were answered?" "That child was saved!" "Did you see that? She gave him a blessing!" "Why haven't my prayers been answered?" "Perhaps you haven't been faithful enough!" "I want money!" "I want my love to return to me!" "What makes that kid so special?" "She's so lucky to have a blessed child!" "Would the Witch Queens bless my child?" "They'll answer your prayers! Spread the word! Everyone must know!"

'Oh, no.' A sinking feeling begins to develop in your gut. Already from within the crowd you hear things beyond their physical whispers; you hear them praying, and each of them is praying for something different. 'This might be an issue.'

>Ignore them and move on, you'll deal with prayers later

Make the statement that only those who are truly loyal will have their needs met, not their wants.

What can be provided for with work, should be provided for with work.

That instead of giving them each merely a blessing, we are going to bless the entire realm of Aran so that they will have the opportunity to make their prayers come true.

Loyalty alone is not enough, they must also contribute.

But we are kind, and as such when we hear the prayer of those truly in need, truly helpless, we will answer them with a mothers endless love. Much as we saved this child, they are all our children.

It is not just the duty of a parent to protect and nurture their child, but to teach them and let them grow.

And they will grow into children we can be proud of.

Looking out over the crowd, you clench a fist and cast a spell of levitation. You rise high up into the air so that all may look up and see.

"PEOPLE OF ARAN, HEAR ME!" you shout, amplifying your voice with a simple spell. They stare up in awe and silence. "Yes, I saved the boy from his illness. He was in dire need! I will not hand out gold, power or other equally material things. What can be gained through work, should be earned through work, and it shall be provided. Only those who are truly loyal will have their needs met, not their wants. But loyalty alone is not enough, you must also contribute."

Turning to face the other half of the crowd, you continue, "It is not just the duty of a parent to protect and nurture their child, but to teach them and let them grow. And they will grow into children we can be proud of. Instead of blessing each and every one of you individually, I bless this entire realm of Aran! I bless it with opportunity, to make each of your prayers come true! For I am kind, and as such when we hear the prayer of those truly in need, truly helpless, we will answer them with a mother's endless love. For you are all children of Aran, my children!"

Once more turning back, you declare, "Work hard, raise your children well, and work towards the better future that I envision for all of Aran. Through your hard work in raising a better generation, well-fed and blessed, all of Aran will prosper!"

There are cheers, which begin to pick up; many people hear your message and it gives them hope. For so long, Aran has been a dour and dismal place, but your promise of a brighter future sparks something within them.

"Having said that," you say as their cheering dies down, "if you do have legitimate grievances or issues, prayers that need resolution, the kind that aren't life-endangering, take them to your local church or cult. Perhaps write them down on a piece of paper."

The people look at each other, but seem to accept your words. You levitate back down to the ground and march along your way, amid cries of hope and change. It feels good to know you are having a positive influence on these people. At least until the next major crisis or illness breaks out, or something like that. For now, however, they have been pacified. With your message, hopefully they will begin working on improving their lives and the lives of their children. It won't happen overnight, and you'll probably need to give a few more speeches here and there, but eventually change will come.

You march into the goblin quarter.

Have them bring forward a goblin outcast failure goblin for us to first brand, then convert into a Shadow Goblin.

That way if we succeed it's because our power can lift up even the most wretched of them. If we fail, it's because he wasn't truly loyal and was unable to give himself to our power.

Why brand him and not the other Goblins? Because he will have a reputation as the first, but we can keep him out of directly ruling and instead have him be the sword that stands behind whoever IS in charge.

Since he was the weakest before, it's an excuse for him to not have to go out and fight.

Instead he can be our Goblin Batman who keeps them in line from the shadows. Or not I just thought it would be neat tonhave wheels within wheels for no reason but a love of advisors ruling from the shadows.

Just, you know, test the limits of how much we can power them up with him.

As you enter the somewhat-shabby quarter, you see goblins scampering about, some in the streets and some in homes of stone. As one skitters by, you command him to fetch his leaders.

Within minutes, the three color-coded goblin casters come running. One trips onto his side, causing another to fall over him, while the third grabs onto the second and gets dragged along. The three of them end up rolling up to your feet, fighting and biting each other and clawing at the other's robes.

"Ahem!" you get their attention and they immediately straighten up. "Is this any way to greet your queen?"

The red one, Toldy, speaks up. "No, not at all, my queen, your magnificent malevolent monstrousness! But these two insisted on dragging their feet!"

The tall, blue one smacks the back of his head. "Nonsense! Don't lie to her! You were the one who doubted that she had even come to visit us at all!"

The short and fat one, Moldy, puts his hands to his mouth. "I wasn't done eating..."

"Enough!" you shout, and they all shut up. "How goes the process of converting the goblins to Aran's native shadow energy?"

Toldy pushes Scoldy forward. He coughs into his hand. "Well, you see, that's been slow going," he says, and then immediately cringes in a self-defensive pose.

"And why is that...?"

Toldy pops forward. "We need more shadow energy! Like, raw, liquid shadow-stuff that the goblins can bathe in and drink. Sometimes that kind of essence leaks off of the walls and through the cracks, and we've been having goblins lick it up and eat it whenever they can find it, but if we had a tub of it? NO, a POOL of it, we could turn all the goblins into shadoblins in minutes!"

You rub your chin. "Show me this essence that 'leaks' on the walls."

Scoldy and Toldy both look at Moldy, who sheepishly shies away. At a stern look from you, Moldy reaches into his filthy robes and takes out a jar. "Here... I was going to spread this on my bread later... but you can have it..."

You take the foul-smelling jar from his grubby little hands and inspect it. There is a thick, viscous liquid inside with the consistency of honey. It is black with a purplish-bluish shine. "This is raw, concentrated Aranian shadow-gel?"

"I call it shadow-jello!" Moldy says, then Scoldy hits him.

"Interesting," you say, opening the jar and sticking your finger into it. It has a very sticky and stringy quality to it. "I shall see if there is a means of producing and collecting this. If it contains the transformative properties you claim it does, we may be able to infuse shadow-energy into beings much larger and stronger than goblins, provided we collect enough of it."

As you squish it between your fingers, sense that it is of similar composition to other negative energy sources that you have felt in the past, such as the shadow magic you have derived from That Which Never Sleeps.

"Interesting indeed. I think I am going to look into that 'pool' idea of yours."

Toldy beams with pride and yellow teeth.

"In the meantime, continue trying to convert the goblins. Use that ritual I gave you."

"We have been," Scoldy says, then immediately adds on, "That is, we have been trying. Here, this is Gnaw-Gnaw, he's one of our successful conversions! Or at least, he's halfway there, with additional treatments coming."

A goblin scampers out of the darkness. His eyes are pale and colorless, and his skin is grey. His teeth have sharpened much more than a typical goblin's, and his fingers now end in claws. He drools and snaps his teeth a few times.

"Are all the shadow-goblins like that?"

Scoldy shakes his head. "No, Gnaw-Gnaw was always like that. But he took the ritual better than anyone else so far, I think because of how simple-minded he is. Not at all like us, since we're so smart!" Nearby, Moldy picks his nose.

"Well, I expect more results and soon. I'll be in touch."

You turn and walk away, teleporting back to the Citadel. Once there, you meet with Sheldrake and receive an update. "Your twin has received word of your desire for her to contact Mr. DeVille. She will do so at the earliest convenience."

"Good." You inform him of your desires to collect the shadow-essence into a pool. He understands and informs you that it will be completed within the hour. "Within the hour?!" you say, nearly shocked.

"A previous Witch Queen once collected this very same essence and stored it in large tanks beneath the citadel. She died before she had a chance to refine it."

"Why didn't I know about this?"

"There are many things hidden away in Aran by past Witch Queens."

"I want a list of such things as soon as possible. And what exactly do you mean, 'refine' it?"

"She had plans to use it as a fuel source. Unrefined, it can mutate all who become submerged in it, infusing them with shadow-essence and permanently linking them to the very material that Aran is forged from. Refined, it is less volatile and has a wider range of uses."

"What exactly was she planning on fueling?"

"She never shared that information with me. I believe her notes are still in the library, if you are curious." He bows, and goes to create your dark pool.

Proceeding deep into the Citadel, not far from the incubation chamber, you enter the chamber where the body of the red dragoness lies sleeping. Still locked in human form, for her soul has been removed by you, her body is kept alive and in stasis, tended to by your servitors until she gives birth to Francis' child.

You walk around the slab upon which the body lies, noting how beautiful she is. Dark skin, fiery red hair, with a pair of horns sticking out hinting at her true draconic nature. Truly powerful dragons have the ability to shapeshift into a variety of forms, and another unique quality they possess is their power to crossbreed with nearly any known species. The green dragon in the swamp has certainly been enjoying that ability, rasing an army of greenspawn from various creatures.

Placing a hand upon her belly, you feel only the barest hint of swelling. Any child of Francis is bound to have magical talent; that's why he wants to have one with you, after all. This one, born of a red dragon? It would make for a magnificent pawn.

If only these things didn't take so long to grow!

Approaching a nearby jewelry box, you open it up and behold a magnificent ruby that seems to burn with an inner flame. In a manner of speaking, it does, for it contains the red dragon's soul. You pick it up and commune with it. Immediately your mind is assaulted by a shouting voice.

"INSOLENT SPECK OF A SORCERESS! YOU WILL RELEASE ME BACK INTO MY BODY!"

"And why would I do that?"

"I AM THE GREAT AND MIGHTY NALLAENAS THE CRIMSON-BORN! YOU HAVE STOLEN MY TITLE, MY BODY, MY DIGNITY AND MY VERY SOUL! RELEASE ME NOW, AND YOU SHALL BE GRANTED A QUICK AND MERCIFUL DEATH, BUT IF YOU DO NOT, WHEN I ESCAPE FROM THIS RUBY PRISON I SHALL RAIN A FIERY RETRIBUTION DOWN UPON YOU THAT WILL BURN GREATER THAN ALL THE FIRES OF EVERY HELL ACROSS THE REALMS! MY FURY WILL BURN ENTIRE WORLDS AND THEY SHALL BE THE ALTAR UPON WHICH YOUR TORMENT IS WROUGHT!"

"That's nice, dear."

You put her back in the box and close it. 'Well, not going to get anything out of that one, I imagine. At least not yet. Perhaps some more time is needed for her to cool off. Taking out your orb, you contact Faye. "Have you learned anything yet? Any useful rituals?"

She answers. "I've been taking a tour of their facilities. You should see this place! It's very clean, not at all what you might expect from a sorceress-worshipping sex cult. They do fine work here, Sirena!"

"Faye, the question."

"Right. I've gotten ahold of their texts and would be able to try this ritual, but I'll need a test subject. A pregnant one. Preferably one who is expendable in case the ritual goes wrong and kills the kid."

"Bring a follower to the Umbral Citadel, and I shall assist you in this ritual. It is high time we mastered it."

"I'll be there in a few minutes," she says, and her image fades from your orb.

True to her word, several minutes later she arrives with several acolytes of the Witch Queen's Daughters, as well as your test subject, a young woman who looks to be about halfway to term. You take her to a ritual chamber and arrange her in the center, and then you and Faye get to work. Following the scroll closely, you create a series of runes on the floor, set up candles, arrange a series of material components from the citadel's stores and prepare the subject herself.

"Remain calm," Faye instructs her. "You'll be holding your new baby in no time."

As Faye once described it to you, the ritual uses the life-force of the subject itself as one of its sacrificed components, taking from her the time that would have been spent naturally growing the child, effectively shortening her total lifespan by a number of months. The spell uses a form of time magic, tapping into the arcane fabric of chronomagic in order to accelerate all bodily functions. It is required, therefore, that the subject be explicitly well-hydrated and fed prior to the ritual taking place. While it would be impossible to cram months of food and water into her at once, the ritual only demands that her body have enough energy to withstand its effects. Without it, there is a chance she may die.

With all the precautions and preparations taken care of, you and Faye begin the ritual. The nearby cultists chant as you and Faye speak arcane words, moving your bodies in perfect sync. As you do this, the runes upon the floor begin to glow and the mother begins to sweat.

She lets out a cry of pain, but you ignore her and keep going; halting the ceremony could have disastrous effects. You do not pay attention to what goes on below, but you can imagine her body swelling up as she and her baby go through months of changes in mere seconds.

The most important aspect of the ritual is to stop before the child is actually born. To this end, exact information in regards to the time of the initial conception is needed to judge how long the ritual itself should take. Too short, and you could end up waiting another month or few weeks, and too long, the birth will happen with... explosive results. You and Faye calculated the formula beforehand and know just when to stop, and so you do, both of you ceasing your movements and utterings as the cultists cease their chanting.
>>
>>2676843

You and Faye look below. The cultist, now covered in sweat and nearly crying, with a much larger stomach, is on the verge of birth. You and Faye make way for the acolytes to move in and tend to her, for they are well-trained in the art of delivery. You avert your eyes from the sight until the act is done.

A beautiful, healthy baby girl is presented for your approval. You smile and nod, and it is given to the mother.

Faye dusts off her hands and smiles. "That wasn't so bad, actually. I think we've got it down!"

>Now, we're going to use it on the red dragon.

Don't let the anons and QM rose tinted views
of the MC delude you. Sirena is an unrepentant, selfish, manipulative, evil villain. Any good deed she has ever done was out of
selfish pragmatic self-interest rather than some hidden kindness in her.

Any evil deed she does is justified by the cheap excuse of revenge which really doesn't matter since once she does finally get her revenge, she will simply
come up with some other excuse to justify her immoral character and continue being herself.

In fact, Mordrax has ironically became the lesser evil between them after all she has done in this quest. Sirena is an evil, selfish, manipulative, power hungry cunt. A sexy, buxom, badass, interesting, evil cunt, but an evil cunt nonetheless.

"Take the adjustments we made to the ritual and what we have learned; record everything. Take it back to the cult and see that it is put into effect, so they too may master it. In fact, take on several dedicated acolytes as your personal apprentices. I want to get to a point where we can perform several such rituals a day, so we may breed a large army in no time."

"I like the sound of that!" she says, taking the ritual scroll. "This is going to be fun!"

"And prepare yourself, Faye. I don't want you out of commission when I may need you, so we're doing this on you next."

She pauses, then smiles. "I'm going to be a mother! How exciting! I haven't even thought of a name yet!" She happily skips out of the citadel with the acolytes and the new mother holding her child.

Now, onto other business.

Proceeding upstairs to your corpse storage, you inspect your current stock. There are four bodies kept in here, dead but perfectly preserved, and above each of them is a box containing a gem with their soul. You stop in front of the binulian sorceress, the woman who taunted you before the Black Gauntlet. Of course, you showed her your superiority, and now have her corpse and her soul.

You think for a moment about the country of Binulia. A predominantly human nation to the east, beyond the mountains of the dwarves and goblins, it has a reputation of being not as grand or as powerful as the other human kingdoms but tough and well-protected, its people familiar with enduring hardship.

Your northborn revenant, Komortha, has informed you of a coming attack on a border town for that kingdom. Perhaps there is an angle you could work with, using this woman as an agent on your behalf... after all, she was strong enough to make it into the Black Guantlet to begin with, and you have so far resurrected nearly all of the other competitors. Then again, she was quite irritating and rude. Perhaps you should simply turn her soul into a wraith and use her body for spare parts.

>Sirena just wants to fuck over Mordrax
It's not the fact she wants to fuck him over. It's what all she has done in this quest series and the fact she won't change even if she does get revenge on Mordrax that makes her unredeemable. Mordrax isn't a great equalizer. His death won't change her from the evil sorceress she is.

Deciding that you shall see how useful she can make herself, you perform the ritual and place her soul into her body, transforming her into a revenant. She slowly rises from the slab, looking at her pale hands, then her eyes focus and she looks at you. Her lips part in shock. "Sirena..."

"Hello, friend. Have you enjoyed your time in the crystal?"

"It was so... cold," she says, touching her shoulders. She realizes she can't feel anything. "What? What is...?"

"You are dead. A revenant. You've traded one prison for another, only this one is your former body. It will be kept from rot but you are still merely a spirit inside of an object that belongs to me."

She looks back up at you. "So you did win." After a moment of silence, she asks, "And what is to become of me?"

"You will serve me or be destroyed. I could turn your soul into a wraith and send your body off to be chopped up into fodder for my experiments, or rip every memory out of your soul and leave you as a broken shell. Those are just some of my options. Serve me loyally, and one day I may even reward you with your life back. Betray me, however, and you will know torment unlike any you've ever felt. So what say you?"

Slowly, she moves off of the slab, gets on all fours and crawls towards you. She kisses your feet. "Please, Sirena, mistress, forgive me... You were more powerful. You won the Black Gauntlet. I was a fool to think I could defeat an apprentice of Mordrax." She kisses your other boot. "Please, let me serve you. I have spent my time imprisoned full of regret! But I can be more, I, I can be your apprentice!"

"Hah! Not likely. But you may have your uses. Keep cleaning my boots as I decide what to do with you..."

"You shall be sent into your home kingdom of Binulia. From there, I want you to disrupt the politics of that kingdom however you can, in order to weaken them for a coming invasion from the northern barbaric tribes.

She looks up at you. "But why?"

"Never you mind. Are you going to question me?"

"No! I will do it! I will do all that you command!"

"Good. Your belongings have been kept with you, so you will be ready soon. Speak with the lich Xiax'zas and work on a plan with her; she will send you to your kingdom. Do not fail me."

"I will not, mistress. My name is--"

You cut her off. "I don't care." You turn and approach another slab containing a corpse as the mage shows herself out. Now you look upon the high elf. You remember her well from the Black Gauntlet, not only for her beauty but her power in evocation. Her strong arcane spells were superior to your own; she clearly was a battlemage, perhaps of noble descent. She reminds you of yourself if you were born with more high elven blood in your veins.

QM i have a suggestion that you might hate, but i wanna see your thoughts if you like it.

Once this quest is over and Sirena has her revenge and reaches the top. How about you make another quest once you have the time. Make it set in the same universe of this quest some time after Sirena's victory and reign.

The MC's goal is to take down take Sirena and her minions. However, the MC isn't doing this for petty revenge and power like Sirena does. The new MC does it because he/she wants to selflessly improve the world by ending the rule of the evil sorceress and free the thralls under her. We get to meet familiar faces and locations from the previous quest.

This MC is nothing like Sirena and completely different. The new MC is extremely selfless, trusting, just and kind. Basically the ideal morally good hero who has made it his/her objective to undo every evil thing Sirena has done. The MC could be female, or male.

What do you think QM?

Doing much the same as you did with the Binulian woman, you reunite the high elf with her body, transforming her into a revenant. Her eyes open and she rises to a seated position. Unlike her more weak-willed peer that you awoke just prior, she does not react in shock or despair. You can tell from the look of her eyes that she is rapidly assessing the situation and coming to a conclusion. She is a smart one, this high elf.

"So you are the Witch Queen?" she asks.

"I and my twin are the Witch Queens," you clarify.

"It should have been me," she says, closing her eyes. "But it is not." She opens them once more and looks into your eyes. "I suppose you expect me to serve you now."

"You are quick on the uptake. How do you feel about that?"

"I would rather be alive, but this is an improvement over spending time in that gem."

"Will you resist me?"

"I am no fool. I lost that contest and you took my soul. If you had wanted me permanently destroyed, you could have, but here I am. Though I don't like it, I have no control over this situation. It is in my best interests to listen to what you have to say."

"You are very logical. I can respect that. It seems like so few who went into that contest were truly prepared, mentally, for what it takes not only to win but to rule this realm. When I look upon you, I see someone who had a chance to win. But you didn't. And now, you are my revenant. If you serve me well, I will grant you your life back. Betray me, and terrible things will happen."

"I understand."

"So," you say, sitting on the slab behind you, "tell me about yourself, that I may better understand what use for you I may have. I remember you telling me that your noble family would come for me before I had you killed. That never happened."

She takes a quiet but deep breath. "That was a lie. My name is Anastrianna. Though I may look like a noble, the truth is that I am not. It is a ruse. I belonged to a poor and pathetic family of no renoun, and so when I discovered my talent in magic I ran from them to make a name for myself. With no master, I taught myself everything that I know about magic, doing whatever was needed to become as powerful as I have, focusing on evocation magic. I reasoned that if I could merely kill whatever was in my path, I would eventually reach a place of power and respect. That is when I heard of the Black Gauntlet, and travelled to its meeting place. I killed another girl who was going to enter, and took her sponsorship. That is how I came to be where I was."

"You will remain here at the citadel, and train my soldiers in evocation magic and other offensive combat spells. Is that understood?"

"It is."

"Very well. Get in contact with the leader of my royal guard, Vorkath. He will put you to good use in the training of his men."

She rises and leaves the chamber.

Now you approach the very last and final corpse whose soul you preserved from the tournament. She is a female goblin, one you remember as not being very powerful, but knew some elemental spells. Perhaps she could have some use in relation to the goblins you have here in Aran?

Taking up her soul stone, you commune with her spirit. A slightly high-pitched voice fills your mind.

"Huh? Is someone there?"

"It is I, Sirena Le Doux, the Witch Queen of Aran, and keeper of your body and soul."

"Aw, shucks. I was kind of hoping you wouldn't say that, and that some big, handsome hero had come to rescue me from being trapped in this rock. Shoot. Well, what do you want?"

"I want to know if you'd like to be put back into your own body. I have a population of goblins living here in Aran, possibly in need of some more competent leadership. Are you competent?"

"I'm competent enough!" she quickly replies. "You got bodies? I'll lead 'em!"

"I have several goals that need to be accomplished. Firstly, I want the goblins transformed into part of my army. Secondly, I want them infused with dark magic to create shadow goblins. Thirdly, I want them trained in magic, or at least the stronger ones, so they are more versatile. Understood?"

"I can make it happen! Please put me back in my body! I'll be a good little goblin, I promise! Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a pitchfork in my eye!"

Setting the stone upon her body, you perform the ritual and your newest revenant soon hops up to her feet to look you in the eyes, or almost does, given how short she is.

"Thanks, sister! I mean, I'm still dead, but this is definitely an improvement."

"You're welcome... Now, as I was saying, I've got three goblin lackeys who are in charge but they couldn't lead their way out of a field of grass. I want you to whip the goblins into shape. Since you were able to at least make it to the Black Gauntlet, I assume you have some power or skill, so put it to good use and make yourself useful. Don't make me regret bringing you back."

"You won't, ma'am!" She salutes you, hops off the table and scurries out of the room.

Now, the final corpse in this chamber and its most recent, the maid from the Le Doux estate, whom Lambert tried to warn you through. The poor girl was killed, likely by one of Jeaneus' demons, and you preserved her body and soul here in Aran. But what to do with her?

You hold up the gem her soul was transferred into and commune with her.

"This is Sirena. Speak to me."

"What? What is going on?" She sounds confused, scattered and afraid. Murdered as she was, and without any magical knowledge, she is ill-suited to the kind of prison her soul is now trapped in. "Where am I?"

"You are dead. I have saved your soul, and can put it back into your body, but you will still be dead. There may be a chance to bring you back, however."

She doesn't seem to hear that last bit. "Oh, gods! I'm dead! Why? I never got to have a family, I never said goodbye to anyone!"

"Listen to me! You were murdered. Focus! I need to know your last moments in life. Tell me who sent you to give me the message."

"It was... It was Master Lambert. He told me to pass along the message to you, but... Oh, gods, I was killed for it, wasn't I?"

"You can come back, if you promise to serve me. I am still a member of the Le Doux family. You will serve me, do you understand?"

"Yes... Yes, I... I must serve..."

You smile. 'Good. She's so broken by the experience she'll fall back into the familiar. Stepping aside, you begin the ritual to turn her into a revenant. When it is over and the girl is brought into her own body, she looks down and sees the slash in her stomach and nearly screams, then realizes she feels no pain, or anything physical at all.

"What is your name?" you ask her, holding her by the head.

"Isolda," she whimpers.

"Isolda, you serve me. I am Sirena Le Doux, and I have saved your life. Do you understand?"

After a moment, she nods. "I do..."

"Good." You let go and consider what to do with her.

Cupping her chin, you look at her. "There's no real reason to keep you as a revenant under my power when you have no power of your own," you reason. "I have never brought anyone back to life. I think I should learn how. You will serve nicely as a test subject..."

The girl shakes, too fearful to reply.

The resurrection chamber that was built so that you, in the unlikely event of your death, would be reborn here, has all the preparations needed to resurrect another being as well. With the runes permanently carved into the floor, all that is required is a body, a soul, and the right knowledge and magical application.

You instruct her to lie upon the slab, which she does. After studying scrolls taken from your library, you believe you have everything needed to make this happen, and so you perform the ritual. Green energy swirls about the chamber, guided by your hands. The servitors offer the material components, which dissolve and turn into green mist which trails behind the energy you are building. The room itself is designed to focus and amplify positive, living energy, itself a rare resource in Aran, and you focus it into the maid.

The ritual also repairs damaged bodyparts, as it wouldn't do well to resurrect her only for her to die of her large gut wound.

You concentrate, speak the words and move your fingers and hands, surrounding her in a cocoon of green light. When the ritual is at its peak, you cease, and all energy dispels. What is left behind is the maid: living, breathing, her skin a healthy pink and heart beating. She falls to her knees and touches her face and stomach where her wound once was.

"I'm alive..." she whispers.

You grin. "Yes, you are. I've mastered the spell. Life and death no longer hold any barriers for me..." You bring up your hand and kiss it. "What a wonderful feeling..."

The maid is sent off to join Alicia in scrubbing the floors. Perhaps a friend will do her some good. As you stand in the chamber, reveling in your most recent success, Sheldrake appears.

"My queen. The pool you requested is prepared."

You proceed with Sheldrake down a large staircase into the heart of the citadel, where a large circular pool has been constructed. Filled to nearly the top and accessable by a stairway leading into the blackness is a pool of negative shadow-energy. Much like the jar you held earlier, only in vastly greater quantity, the surface shines with a purplish-bluish sheen whenever any light is cast upon it, warped and distorted though that sheen may be.

"Any who enter the pool will emerge changed," Sheldrake explains. "The shadow energy will drastically alter them, corrupting them into dark and twisted versions of their former selves. As this particular pool is wrought of shadowstuff native to Aran, this means that all who enter become part of Aran in a manner of speaking."

"And therefore loyal to me?"

"To the Witch Queen, yes."

You catch the hint in his voice that you may not be the Witch Queen forever. "Now, now, Sheldrake, I'm not going anywhere."

"Indeed."

"What manner of powers would a creature possess upon their submersion?"

"That would depend on the creature itself. Different beings react in different ways to exposure. Results may vary from being to being and species to species."

Standing near the edge, you stare into that seemingly infinite blackness and ask, "And what were to happen if I were to submerge myself?"

"I do not know, my queen. It would either make you more powerful, or kill you."

"Flip of a coin, eh?" you say, taking out the coin you stole from Mordrax. "I just so happen to have a means of bettering my odds. I wonder..."

You summon a small group of goblins. Toldy, Scoldy and Moldy, as well as your new revenant goblin, lead them into the citadel.

At your bidding, five goblins enter the pool, and they do so willingly after being told it is made out of the 'tasty stuff' they lick off the walls. After several seconds of nothing happening, you prepare to assume they all died when suddenly one of them crawls out of the pool, followed by his four breathren.

You approach the goblins and look upon them. Their flesh is greyish-blue, and their limbs appear to have become elongated. Their forms seem thin, almost emaciated, and their eyes are bright white. With sharp teeth and claws, they resemble that goblin you saw earlier, and almost immediately begin causing trouble. Demonstrating a newfound ability to scale on walls, they begin leaping to and fro like monkeys, chattering and hollaring.

"They're gremlins," you say, observing as two of them claw and bite at each other. "But can they be put under control?"

Despite the best efforts of your goblin minions, these new shadoblins don't seem to hold any attention, take orders or sit still for more than seven seconds.

As one bites on Sheldrake's leg, the butler pays it no mind as he turns towards you. "They may still have some use. If released into a public place, they would cause havoc. But turning your goblins into these... gremlins, as you put them, will make integration with your population difficult."

>No more gremlins; we'll just have to stick with the slower method of shadoblin creation so we can control them.

"I don't want any more of these gremlins. Dispose of these ones or find some other use for them. We'll just have to stick with slower means of shadoblin creation to ensure that we can control them."

You sit on the edge of the pool and think. Sheldrake approaches you from the side as your goblins see the gremlins out.

"If I may, my queen, there may be other means of creating soldiers for your army. Have you ever considered cloning?"

"What?" you say as you look up at him.

"Growing copies from a sample of flesh. The practice is rather inaccurate, and oftentimes the copies are flawed, but there have existed some mages who dabble in these arts. One Witch Queen was a blood mage who desired to grow creatures in vast flesh pits."

"Do we still have said flesh pits?"

"They have long since dried up from disuse, but could be regrown."

"What would it take to regrow them?"

"Flesh to feed upon and blood to drink."

"I suppose we could use the Penumbrians for that purpose," you say with a yawn. "I tire of such matters... I need to rest my mind. See that nobody disturbs me."

Teleporting back to the mortal plane, though it is only the early evening, you take a much-needed nap. When you awaken, the stars are shining outside, and your orb is buzzing. Not the usual one that you use to cast your spells through, but Francis' communication orb.

You paw around for it and pick it up. "Hello?"

He doesn't seem very pleased, judging from the look on his face. "Sirena. Did you send several beautiful, young, horny women to live in my tower and help me research this curse?"

"Oh, yes, I did do that."

He runs a hand through his hair. "Even though I TOLD you that I can't knock anyone up? I've got seven half-naked chicks running around and acting all sultry and telling me that they'll do anything I ask because their dark mistress has commanded it, and I'm saving my seventh child for you! This... this is torture!"

"If it truly gets that bad, just have them suck you off or fuck their ass or something," you say, irritated that he would bother you about a matter like this. "You can get by on handjobs, can't you?"

"You're a real romantic, babe. Well, I'm not going to back down from this. You think I can't resist temptation? I'll have you know that I'm not even going to have sex with a single woman until it's with you! That's right, I'm saving this load for you!"

"Now who's the romantic?" you say, nearly gagging. "You sure do know how to make a woman feel special, Francis. Now, do you actually have anything important to report, or did you just want to talk about nothing?"

"As a matter of fact, I do. Word has filtered in from the capital: the royal family is hosting an upcoming ball, and Mordrax is set to attend... as is the Le Doux family."

You sit up in the bed. "Really..."

"Really. There's quite a bit of buzz about it, given the recent devastation wrought upon their manner... It seems a certain wayward traitorous daughter attacked her family's home and now, at the invitation of the king himself, they have moved into the royal palace. They're generating sympathy unseen since your exile."

"That bastard Mordrax must have done this," you say through gritted teeth. "As the royal wizard, he has the ear of the king, and convinced him to welcome my family back into society. Those swine! Those traitors! Those insolent, cowardly, Mordrax-worshipping cunts!"

>When is this ball?

He holds up his hands. "I can see you are upset by this. The ball is in a month. I'm thinking that's when Mordrax is going to spring his plot, because apparently the high elven lords and royal family are also invited. What better place and time to take over than when all of your enemies are in one place?"

"One month... That doesn't give us much time."

"Unless he isn't going to make his play there, but I doubt it."

"We're going to have to do everything in our power to stop him before then."

"I'm still looking into a way to break the curse. The upside of having these girls around is that they're cleaning up the tower, I suppose... but don't think you can tempt me out of our deal!"

"I wouldn't dream of it," you say. "Goodnight, Francis."

You take your hand off the orb and roll over in bed with a heavy sigh. 'One month... I'm getting so stressed I can hardly think.'

At that moment, Isseal transforms from your necklace into her true self, lying next to you in bed. "Something on your mind?"

"A lot of things," you say. "Logistics, cults, politics, godhood, rituals, minions, supplies and more. Revenge has gotten so complicated."

"I do hope you aren't giving up."

"Never!" you say.

"Have you thought about finding someone who can manage these sorts of things for you, so you can focus on other areas that aren't as headache-inducing?"

"I would trust Faye, but she lacks the long-term vision that I have. She's very 'in-the-moment' unlike myself."

"Are you sure you're not 'in-the-moment' like she is?"

"Well, not as much. Sometimes. But I'm working on building enough resources to take down Mordrax! Who can I trust to manage something like that?"

"It's just a suggestion."

That's something we could vote on if it is decided to delegate certain responsibilities to, but things like building up our army, minor tasks that we have been overseeing but could probably pass on to someone else, so we could focus on more self-improving things, like learning new spells or exploring ruins to level up our minions and get more powerful artifacts. We haven't done a dungeon delve in a while and those are always the best places to find new loot and powerful items.

"Find someone new" is also an option I meant to include. This kind of thing also goes hand-in-hand with those earlier options of finding someone capable of leading and organizing our army.

"What of you, Isseal? You've been with me all day. You've seen how I like to handle my business."

"And I've studied you for some time, from a distance. But yes, today has been most enlightening."

"If I were to send you to Aran, would you oversee things like meeting with the cult leaders and making decisions to better the realm? You may appear as myself."

"I am a master of deception, and your wish is my command."

"Then it shall be so. Manage my realm when I am not there, but if there are truly pressing and important matters I wish to know of them."

"I shall use my utmost judgment." Before your very eyes, she transforms into a vision of yourself, an exactly duplicate, clad only in underwear that matches your own. While Faye has her cosmetic differences with her hair and eye color, Isseal is able to make a perfect reflection of your beauty. Even your eyes are the exact shade of blue. And even though your skin is now green, you must admit that in the proper light, it has a certain... appeal.

"Mmmm... not bad," you say, bringing up a hand to cup her perfect cheek. "You truly have studied me well."

"I have found you fascinating, just as my patron gods have."

"Indeed. Tell me, Isseal... when you were watching me, did you see my more intimate moments?"

"Yes," is all she answers.

"As a changeling, have you ever lusted?"

"We have much greater control over our bodily processes, and so are not subject to physical cravings. But every now and then, we do build up a... mental hunger. Have I ever lusted? Yes. But rarely have I ever indulged."

You smile. "Speaking of indulgence, as you've seen how I operate, be careful not to arouse suspicion of your true identity."

"You needn't say a thing. I'm a master."

"Then my commands are thus: handle various affairs in Aran, make public apperances, deal with issues when they pop up, look over that contract when it arrives, and manage my army. You have my permission to further deligate responsibilites as you see fit. But remember, anything that demands my attention shall receive it."

"I shall not disappoint you, my mistress."

You rise and stretch, putting on your disguise as Mary. After sending Isseal off back to Aran, you gently knock on Alex's door. You haven't gotten to spend much time with him lately, and you'd like to change that.

"Come in!" he calls. You open the door and his cherubic face beams with a smile. "Mary!" Pushing back from his desk, he quickly moves to give your waist a hug.

"Hello, Alex," you say, running a hand through his golden-blonde hair. "I'm sorry I've been so busy lately. Things tend to pile up on me."

"I understand," he says. "I want to tell you something important!"

He takes you by the hand and brings you to his desk, where he has been compiling notes. Several books are nearby. "Using records from Bridge Town, and from what I've put together from my family's chronicled history, combined with the things we found in the cemetary, I've pinpointed the Shepherd family tomb!"

You kneel alongside him and oversee his work. He's been working on his family tree, trying to fill in the gaps. A map is nearby, and he has the tomb marked upon it. It is southeast of the large swamp, a decent journey from here, but not very far.

"Tell me about this curse on your family again," you say to him.

"I'm not exactly certain what it is myself... If it is a true curse, or a curse in the metaphorical sense. That's why I'm trying to work my way up through my lineage. If I could learn where my family went wrong..."

"Went wrong?"

He swallows. "There are rumors that the Shepherds were once terrible people. An evil family. The kind of evil that doesn't go away, that stays with a bloodline. I'm not sure if that is true or not... that's why I have to know. I have to bring light to the darkness."

You put a hand on his shoulder and hold up a finger. "Just remember that not all darkness is evil, Alex."

"But... the texts say that darkness is where evil lurks."

"Yes, of course. But evil can also lurk in the day, or in hidden places, like the hearts of men. Life isn't about extremes, but rather balance!"

"Balance?"

"You can't have shadows without light, or light without shadows. Just like a potion or a salve, you need the proper ingredients in the right proportions. The difference between poison and cure is the dose."

"I guess that makes sense..."

"And think of it another way: light casts shadows, and we all love to sit under a cool shadow during a hot summer day, yes?"

"You're right!"

Taking him by the hand, you lead him to the bed where you sit upon its edge. He hops into your lap, sitting on one of your legs as your arm holds him by the small of his back. "Let me ask you a question, Alex: what do you hope you will find?"

He thinks for a few seconds while twiddling his fingers adorably. "I... I don't know," he answers honestly. "It might be good, which would be wonderful, but it might be bad, too. I guess I hope that I will find the answer, no matter what it is, good or bad."

"That is very wise of you," you compliment him. "Even if something might be bad or disappointing, it is better that it is known, is it not?"

"I think so, Mary!"

You frown. Alex still doesn't know the truth of your identity. What would it do to him if he were to find out?

"Alex... tell me, do you believe that someone can be irredeemable?"

"Irredeemable? Well... the scriptures teach that everyone can be redeemed."

"Even those who seem evil, or who have been cursed? What about those who have done wrong, or who seem to have done wrong?"

"I think every action can be forgiven," he says.

"No matter how bad?"

"Well... it depends," he says, a little uncomfortable. "I suppose some things are unforgiveable... but normal people wouldn't do those kinds of things. Only truly bad people."

"But what if someone does something bad, for a good reason? What if the only way to do good is by doing something others may condemn as morally wrong?"

"That's a complicated question..." he says, growing quiet. "I... I don't know. The First Faith doesn't talk much about that kind of thing... they teach that if something is wrong, it shouldn't be done, and if something is right, it should always be done."

"Ah... but sometimes, doing something that seems right may in fact be wrong. But if you were to do such a thing, and did not know it, were you truly wrong, and worthy of being condemned?"

"No! At least, I don't think so... In this situation, my intentions would have been pure, right?"

"But what if you did something wrong from a place of ignorance? From simply not knowing if it was right or wrong, but you felt it was right?"

"I... I suppose I would want people to understand and forgive me."

"What would you do if you met such a person?"

"Well... the same thing, I suppose. I would want to understand them and forgive them. I wouldn't want to hate them."

You smile, then pull him into a warm hug. "I'm proud of you, Alex. Remember this lesson for the future. It is important."

"I will, I promise!" he says, hugging you back. To your surprise, he gives you a small peck on the cheek.

You turn to him and give him a loving smile. "Such a good little boy." You lean forward and press your lips against his forehead, giving him a soft, motherly kiss, which makes him blush. Then you follow it up with one to his own cheek, followed by a not-quite-as-motherly kiss on his lips. You do this a few times, each contact lasting no more than a moment and rather chaste compared to how you usually kiss someone, but Alex is special. You'd worry about breaking him if you so much as used your tongue, and so you are very reserved.

Into each kiss is poured your magic, however, just as you have done with him since the beginning. When you pull away, his eyes seem a bit hazy and he has a big, goofy grin and blush on his face. Though your magical kiss renders him highly susceptable to suggestion, you don't say a word, letting him grow more attached to you on his own. He hugs you, resting his head on your busom, and he speaks.

"Mary? I'm happy that we met. When I set out on my journey and ran away from the church, I was scared that I would be all alone..."

You brush his hair gently as you rock him back and forth. "There, there... You're not alone. And you'll never be alone again."

It is growing late, and so you put him to bed, tucking him in tight and wishing him a good night's sleep. You wave at him and close the door behind you, but not before taking his map for further study.

Upon inspecting the map, you learn that it isn't too far from where you spent some time getting to know Albert, the barbarians and first met Krom and Brutus, and borders the great lake. Perhaps Alex has some connection with the Lake Men?

Downstairs, you discover the dwarven runepriest, Bargum, having a drink and a smoke by the fireplace.

"Having a good evening?" you ask him as you sit down next to him.

He doesn't immediately answer. "Nay," he says, taking a long and pensive draw on his pipe, then blowing out the smoke as he stares into the flames. "Somethin's wrong."

Your smile disappears and you react in a guarded manner. Before you believe he is referring to yourself, you probingly ask, "What is it?"

"The runes have foretold trouble on the horizon," he says, speaking rather cryptically. "Dunnae what or when, but soon, aye."

"What else have they said?"

"Ev'ry now an' then, there's moments 'o great import. The kind that all eyes turn t'words. Songs an' legends get made about 'em. A moment like that's comin' soon." He takes his pipe and taps it a few times. "Thing is, the runes told me that it'd be someone I know who makes it happ'n."

"Did they say who?"

"Nay... Only that I'm in the right place, I am, to help make sure it comes to pass. The gods play funny games with us, lass. Sometimes it feels like there ain't no plan, but there is. It's all written down in the writin' of the universe, the script o' the gods."

"I, too, have detected something very troubling. There is a curse affecting the land, preventing people from breeding."

His eyes go wide. "So that's what it meant..."

"Hm?"

"Runespeak can be difficult to understand sometimes," he says, waving a hand. "Said somethin' about fields bein' plowed but no seeds bein' planted. A bad harvest for all the land."

"I see... What do you intend to do?"

He readjusts himself in his chair and thinks. "Gotta do what my liquor does, an' follow my gut." He laughs, and you smirk. "My gut told me that when I met you, I'd be followin' destiny. And ever since comin' here, my gut's been tellin' me that this is the place to be fer it. So I stay with this group, I'm thinkin'."

"I am glad to have you with us. There is indeed a great evil behind all of this... and we must face it. The common folk do not yet know of this curse, and when they find out, there will be chaos."

"Aye..."

Deciding to change the subject, you take out Alex's map. "Do you know anything about this place?"

He looks at it, scouring over every detail. "Aye, I've heard 'o this spot," he says, pointing at the Shepherd tomb. "I know only one thing about it, that bad folks were laid there."

"The Shepherds? They were evil?"

He nods. "I take it the boy wants to go there? Argh, I tried to keep it hidden from 'im. Guess he found it on his own."

"So you knew about his family."

He closes his eyes and shakes his head. "When I heard he were a Shepherd, I almost dinnae believe it. That blood's got bad his'try, lass. But the boy's a shinin' beacon 'o faith an' light!"

"Why do you suppose that is? Why can he channel holy power and divine might so easily, when he is so young?"

"I dunnae," he says, staring into the fire. "Ideas, aye, but I couldn't begin to guess."

"He's very special. But even so, he deserves to know the truth about his family. Either you tell him, or he'll find out on his own when he travels to that tomb."

Sticking his thumb into the end of the pipe, he crushes the burning leaves within and then taps them out. "Ain't my place, I'm thinkin'. He'll learn on his own." The stocky dwarf slides out of his chair and bows his bald head towards you. "Better hit the hay. Night, lass." He downs his mug and heads upstairs to bed, leaving you to look into the flames and think.

Reaching into your bag of holding, you remove the book that Angelo once gave you: the Malevolent Articles of Senesil the Sinister, Revised Edition, with a foreword written by Gunuhu the Bloody-Fingered and edited by Ukal the Wicked.

Opening the book, you flip through its many pages. It is partly a biography, partly a personal journal, partly a manual and many other things, all concerning the work of Senesil. It chronicles his life and his work with devils, demons and various extraplaner beings, as well as his journies to many different realms. It also has spells, diagrams, rituals, charts and more.

There are many places to begin, but if you were to read the book all the way through, it would take some time.

The foreword by Gunuhu the Bloody-Fingered concerns the fact that Senesil's early life is unknown. His origins are speculated upon in one paragraph, where rumors of different realms are discussed and he references some other works by contemporary wizards and warlocks, but though many theories with some simularities exist there is no one agreed-upon truth.

What is known is that the story of Senesil the Sinister begins when he was swallowed by a portal of elemental energy and violently thrown into a realm of chaos, a layer of the abyss dominated by powerful demons. He was young, but not without resources, and Gunuhu notes that it may have been his own fault that he ended up there. Once there, however, he found himself unable to leave.

Gunuhu notes that in at least one version of these early days, before Senesil began writing his own notes, there was a girl with him, some manner of companion, either a family member or a loved one. Senesil himself has conflicting accounts, at times referencing her while at others referencing his only companions being demons, and it may be that she did not exist at all other than as a figment of his imagination.

Regardless, Gunuhu extrapolates from various pieces of evidence what spell caused Senesil's descent into the abyss to occur, and references a spell originally created by an ancient wizard whose work is often reflected in Senesil's style, leading Gunuhu to believe that this wizard was Senesil's chief inspiration. The spell, Elemental Maw, is a powerful one, and you quickly summon your spellbook and begin recording it.

>New Spell Gained: Elemental Maw
>Conjuration
>Daily Spell. Once per day, you may summon a devastating cyclone of elemental energy centered on a single point up to one-hundred feet away by ripping open a hole to the chaotic realm of the Abyss. This vortex is roughly fifty feet wide in diameter, and is composed of various damaging elements such as fire, ice, lightning, acid and pure arcane force. Nothing from the Abyss may emerge from this vortex, but all objects within ten feet of it are threatened to be pulled within, subject to all the damaging effects of its elemental fury. The maw is open for roughly ten seconds. Anything within its limits, alive or dead, that fails to escape it within that time will be sucked into the Abyss when the maw closes, leaving behind destroyed terrain where it was cast.

Senesil either performed this spell incorrectly, casting it too closely to himself, or it was cast upon him. History does not know, and he does not tell. Gunuhu ends his foreword with a warning to any mage who reads this that one must always know what they are casting and where.

Moving onto the proper text by Senesil himself, you find his writing to be erratic and often disjointed, but strangely fascinating. Peering into the mind of a man pushed to his absolute limits in a hellish terrain, forced to do things no normal person would have to do to survive, you are given a glimpse at a genius forced to become a madman simply by living in a hostile and demonic realm. Eventually he would come to thrive and dominate this land, until all of those beneath him whom he took power from combined their forces to annihilate him.

Early in his exile, he was forced to fend for himself against many demonic foes, which he details in great amount. He survived entirely off of roots of various plants, which he would later use in various rituals and concoctions. Though he had to kill many to survive, he never consumed demonic flesh, for that is a sure way to die and transform into the lowest form of demon, something he had no patience for. He was already a powerful mage, working his way up the demonic heirarchy would just take too much time. Fending off abyssal scavengers, dretches and mane demons, he soon attracted the attention of larger foes, plague demons and carnage beasts.

One of the most useful spells he used when escaping from larger demons, and obliterating smaller ones, was to call upon a beam of pure, radiant light. Demons, particularly averse to holy magic, would flee when faced with such a power. Though Senesil prayed to no god, he made use of this divine spell, and you imagine that you will too as you record it in your spellbook.

>New Spell Gained: Sunbeam
>Holy
>A beam of brilliant light flashes out from your hand in a line that can be focused to a point or broadened up to five feet, reaching sixty feet out. This light blinds and burns those caught within it, unless they can resist its effects, in which case it will have a still-damaging effect but to a lesser degree. This radiant spell is particularly potent against unholy creatures: undead, demons and devils. This ray can be cast continuously until the caster is disrupted or runs out of energy.

At that moment, there is a knock at the front door. You look up from your book and spellbook and look towards it. Your sensitive ears pick up the sound of heavy breathing from a large mouth, most certainly not human.

'It must be close to midnight. What could possibly be knocking at this hour?'

As you cast a spell of scrying upon the outside of your door, you get your answer. Stadning there, perhaps seven feet tall or so and hunched over, with a wide and hairy body, is an ogre. You stand up immediately, remembering the time that orgres attacked this very tower and you chased them into the north. They almost kidnapped Kaylessa that evening, and he was wounded from one of their rocks.

You scan the area, but strangely enough this ogre seems to be alone. And unlike that night, when they were trying to violently pound down your door, this one seems to have knocked. And other than his large frame and general frighteningly brutish appearance his kind are known for, he appears unarmed.

Carefully approaching the door, knowing that it can withstand three ogres pounding on it, you lift up your chin and ask, "Who's there?"

His voice is throaty and deep. "Gezug."

"Gezug... who?"

"Gezug."

You roll your eyes. 'Of course.' You clear your throat and continue to ask, "Why are you here?"

"Gezug hungry."

"Well, we don't give out free food here, Gezug. And this tower was attacked by ogres once, so you're not exactly off to a great start."

"Gezug know. Gezug have nowhere else. Gezug hungry."

You close your eyes and sigh. 'Primitive creatures and their broken dialect...' Folding your arms, you say to him, "Why aren't you with your ogre friends?"

"Gezug not welcome. Want Gezug dead."

"Why is that?"

"Gezug not want take food. Gezug not want kill. Pretty flower."

"...What? What flower?"

"Sorry. Gezug thinking of something else." He seems to make a growling noise, but then you realize that is just his stomach. "Ogres want kill people in tower. Gezug not want kill people in tower. Ogres no like Gezug. Gezug come to tower. Gezug hungry."

Against your better judgment, but far too curious not to, you open up the door and look up at him. He has a wide, ugly face, with a scruffy beard and a large nose. His skin, a splotchy and muddy color, is frequently hairy. As for mass, he looks like he could fit three of you into his stomach, which is flabby and bulging, though his legs and arms are thick with muscle.

"Pretty lady," he says, looking down at you with large brown eyes. "Gezug not smash."

"As if you could," you reply with folded arms. "I am a sorceress."

"Know magic? Scare ogres?"

"That's right. I see your tribe remembers me well."

"Tribe scared of pretty lady. Want kill her. Gezug say talk, not kill."

"Well, that makes you the wisest ogre I've ever met," you say, then pause. "Also, the only one."

"Gezug like pretty lady. Give Gezug food?"

"That depends. What are you going to do for it?"

He brings up a big hand to scratch his chin. "Gezug not know. Gezug know where ogres are. Pretty lady want know?"

Now it is your turn to cup your chin. "Hmmm..."

"I tell you what, Gezug. If you agree to lead me to the other ogres, I will feed you."

"Gezug do it. We go now?"

He is about to turn when you reach out and yank on his arm; all this results in is you nearly being pulled out of the door. "No, not now! It is late."

"Ogres sleeping."

"Don't you want to eat?"

His stomach growls. "Oh... Gezug is hungry. Pretty lady have food?"

"I do... but again, I'll only give it to you if you promise to lead me to the ogres."

"Okay. Gezug understand."

Several minutes later, and you have given him nearly half of the stores of meat you kept downstairs. He tears into the raw meat with his large mouth, his tusks making short work of it. As he eats just outside the tower entrance, you lean against the stone doorway.

"So, do they live far?"

"Not far," he says with a full mouth. "In cave, past water."

"The river," you say, mostly to yourself. "I remember chasing them in that direction, but went no further. How many are there?"

He pauses. "Um... Many."

You nearly slap yourself; of course he can't count. "Alright. We may go tomorrow. You may spend the night in the barn, but do not eat the horses. Understood?"

"Gezug not eat horses."

"Good. Remember your promise."

"Gezug not eat horses. Lead pretty lady to ogres. Gezug like pretty lady."

You close the front door and think. 'Well, that was unexpected... but perhaps this could be useful. Gezug here seems like a willing follower, and if the rest of his clan can be brought to heel, a tribe of ogres would go nicely with my army in Aran... Perhaps even shadow-ogres. Hmmm...'

In the early morning, before anyone else awakens, you go to Gezug out in the barn. The large ogre is lying on his side and snoring louding, slightly upsetting the horses. You poke him with a stick in the face until he awakens. "Pretty lady?"

"Get up. I have a plan."

You carefully and slowly explain your plan to Gezug. He will go to his people and tell them a series of lies: that he went to Bad Luck Mine, that the curse upon it is fake, and that there is lots of good food inside to eat, as well as treasure. You hand him a few gems from the tower's vault in order to help him convince the others.

Once you send him off, you travel to Bad Luck Mine, which is just as you have left it since your journey into its depths and meeting your ancestor, the Moon Elf. You enter it and prepare your trap.

It is a few hours before the ogres begin to arrive. For such a small mind, Gezug was overwhelmingly successful with his deception. There are about thirty in total; men, women and children. Gezug leads them inside, but stays back once they begin to explore.

That is when you spring your trap. With a series of illusions and cleverly-disguised conjurings, you conjure large, frightening beasts: dragons, giants and monstrous tentacle creatures. Pulling every trick in your bag out on the confused and simple-minded fools, all the while staying invisible, you herd them into the northwest corner of the mines. There, as your monsters close in on them, seemingly breathing real fire and shooting real lightning, they all step over your teleportation circle.

Your smile could not be wider as you activate the teleportation circle and send the ogres to Aran. You follow along after them, and once in your realm, summon Sheldrake to convert the walls of the chamber into a prison. Displaced as they are, the ogres fall victim to Sheldrake's control of the walls of the Umbral Citadel, and soon enough every ogre is captured.

Gezug is alone when you transport back to Bad Luck Mine, which is starting to feel more like Good Luck Mine. "It is done!" you say with a laugh, walking up to the ogre. "Fine work, Gezug. You deserve a reward. What would you like?"

"Gezug want make babies with pretty lady?"

You scoff and hold up a hand. "Oh please, you and everyone else. There's a line, big fellow. Something else." Though your eyes do end up looking down at his loincloth, you shake your head. Just because you've been on edge of late doesn't mean you're quite that desperate.

He scratches the top of his head. "Gezug not know."

You put your hands on your hips and tell him, "Gezug, you are going to be the new leader of the ogres. They might not like it now, but they will. I have ways of changing their minds. Don't worry, you'll be comfortable in your new home."

"Okay. Pretty lady come visit?'

"As a matter of fact, I'll be there most of the time. Be sure to listen to everything I say, alright?" you say, knowing full well that your changeling will be the one he speaks with.

"Okay."

You take him by the hand and lead him over to the portal, where you send him to Aran. You dust off your hands and prepare to travel yourself when you hear a voice echoing off the cavern walls, one that freezes you where you stand.

"So, you've returned. I was wondering when you might."

Whipping around, you see a dark figure emerging from within one of the tunnels. She is tall, lithe and her skin is so pale it seems to illuminate her surroundings despite giving off no natural light.

'The Moon Elf...!' you realize with a panic. You raise your hands defensively and she laughs.

"I'm not here to destroy you, child. This is where I was imprisoned, and I still hold a connection to this dismal place. When I felt you enter it, I decided to spy upon you... Tell me, of what use are the brutish creatures to you?"

"All animals have their uses."

"Indeed..." You and she begin to walk in a circle, keeping your eyes trained upon the other. "Are you frightened?"

"Hardly. Surprised, more like. I didn't think you'd be coming back down from the moon again so soon, especially since I'd heard you are keeping company."

"The princess, yes. Truth be told, I am rather surprised at her fortitude and dignity, qualities I would have thought long bred out of the weak terrestrial elves that I have found today. She has faced her captivity with a stalwart attitude, which is commendable, though she foolishly believes that someone will find a way to rescue her."

"So, why are you truly here? Just for a friendly chat?" you say in a dangerous tone.

"I thought you might like to visit me," she offers. "Perhaps I would even teach you the secrets of the moongate, that you may visit me whenever you desire."

You stop, and so does she. "You want to destroy this world."

"I must admit that does sound attractive... But loathe as I am to admit it, I lack the power to do so. Yet. Once before humanity imprisoned me within a book, and the threat of such a fate yet lingers... Until I can secure ultimate victory, I shall not invite any to try by raining death upon the terrestrials."

"Then why kidnap the princess? You realize that has drawn just as much attention to yourself?"

"Because I desired to see what had become of the elves, and she was the daughter of the most powerful family of the most powerful elven society. Through her, I have learned much of what my race has devolved into, spread across this blue and green world. The elves are scattered, isolated, deformed. There exist more than seven commonly-accepted subspecies! Once, there were only the elves, a unified people! Now they are all shadows of their former glory..."

"And you are the last one," you say. "I take it you were unsuccessful in finding more?"

"There are none." She sounds almost sad. "It is strange... Though I always considered myself above the others, as I was the most powerful, now that they are gone, I miss them." She looks up at you, her white eyes glowing dimly in the dark of the cave. "Perhaps that is why I desired to speak with you. Why I spared you, even when I did not yet know there were none left. Perhaps, on some level, I always knew."

"Why would you teach me such things when you consider me an animal?"

"You're a terrestrial," she corrects. "Make no mistake, I do not consider you my equal. None on this planet are."

You let out a chuckle. "Ah, I am to be your entertainment, then? Bored up there on the moon, with the stuffy princess who won't amuse you?"

For a moment, she is silent, with a frown on her face. "If you do not wish to come, then so be it." She turns, creates a shimmering blue moongate and wordlessly walks through it, leaving you slightly stunned.

There is only a hint of hesitation from you before you rush through the gate, following her to the surface of the moon.

Once more you find yourself standing upon that grey rock, looking off into the void of space, marked by points of light and the great cloudy blue marble that is your home. It is a magnificent sight, one you didn't get to truly appreciate when you were here last.

The moon elf is sitting upon a stone. "It is quite impressive, is it not?"

You tear your eyes away from the stars for a moment to look around. "Where is your castle?"

"The other side of the moon," she replies.

Facing her fully, you ask, "Were you pouting just now?"

"Silence," she spits at you. "I have... temperment issues. I have spent ten thousand years in isolation and I am only now relearning what it is like to be able to express myself to others. Stay near me long enough, and I may just try to kill you again, if that part of me takes hold."

You lower your arms from their folded position and give her a strange look. "You mean you have more than one personality?"

"I was alone," she says in a distant tone. "Trapped for thousands of years, the only person I coud speak with was myself. And eventually, I started speaking back." She looks up at the stars. "Then, there were more, and I began to realize that every part of my personality was forming its own self-consciousness, each wanting complete control. But trapped as I was, there was no control..."

"And, the 'you' that I met when you were released, that was...?"

"That was me," she says with a nod. "They are all me, and I am learning how to piece myself back together. That is why I have lost some of my power. Some parts of me want to keep it from the whole." She closes her eyes. "I suppose it is ironic... I was so powerful that even parts of my mind became their own entities, with their own desires and ambitions."

"Is that the true reason you kidnapped the princess? Because a version of you thought it would be a good idea?"

"Yes... I can't just return her, that would make that version of me angry. It's also why I wanted to speak with you. This... version of me that you are speaking with right now, is among the more 'agreeable' parts of me." She turns her head and looks into your eyes. "And this is the only version of me that would stoop to asking you for help. Because I need it."

"Go on."

"I am free, but I am still trapped," she says, bringing a hand up to her eyes. "My soul is at war with itself. I have already taken the princess. I may do something more irrational soon. I might even start a war with the terrestrials that I am not ready for."

"What do you want?"

"I want... quiet," she says, shaking her head and making a pained expression. "There is so much noise within my head, so many voices. Within that prison, my mind created a shattered world of pain and torment, and as time went on, it became real. There exists a realm within the mind of every living being but mine has become something more. A dreamscape dominated by a split personality."

You remember, once, travelling into the dream of Brutus, finding yourself in a twisted maze of his mind's creation. What she speaks of sounds logical, for there has perhaps never been a case as unique as her own in the history of the world.

>>2683259
>>2683287

Slowly, you raise your hand, facing the Eye of Unveiling in her direction. Strangely, however, it does not work.

She opens her eyes and looks upon you. "You wish to see...?" she asks, apparently recognizing the magic you possess. "None may gaze upon my soul without my permission. I shall allow you to witness..."

You try again, and this time you experience great pain. Not your own pain, but hers: the pain carried across ten-thousand years of imprisonment, starting with the great human-elf wars of the past. She led the elves from the moon to your world, intent on annihilating all life there, but then, something unexpected happened, that legend did not record: she fell in love, with a human.

Suddenly, you realize that you are looking at the mother of history's very first half-elf, beginning the line that, ten-thousand years later, has resulted in you.

She was imprisoned not long afterwards, and now you hear many voices arising all at once: shattered fragments of her broken psyche, all shouting at each other. One seeks revenge upon the world for what they did to her, her people and her child and advocates its utter destruction: many agree. Some desire to rule over it. At least one or three wish to crash the moon into the world and destroy them both. The cacophony of voices within her head fades into the background as you lower your hand.

"I know that soon I will be unable to control myself. Perhaps I will kill someone, or a great many people. Perhaps I will destroy myself, or attempt to destroy the world. I have power, so much power... and nearly no control over when and how I will use it." She places her hand over her face. "All because of those filthy, vile, ignorant savages of millenia past... those fools, those pathetic simpletons! We were on the verge of peace, of a new era!"

Around you, the ground of the moon begins to shake and crack. You take a step backwards as some pebbles and dust begin floating upwards.
>>
>>2683303

"I was going to show them a better way! I had finally found love! But they took it away from me, took everything away from me and locked me away! I hate them! I HATE THEM!" Now she, too, floats upwards. "I'll destroy everything they hold dear... and everyone upon that miserable blue world!"

She turns her gaze upon you, her eyes blazing a brilliant white. "Starting with YOU!"

'Oh, no,' you realize all too late. 'Not again!'

Raising her hands, she prepares to cast a spell!

I mean. Okay?

I'm pretty sure mine doesn't matter unfortunately

Your first thought is to attempt to stop her from doing whatever she is doing by whatever means possible, or at least slow her down. 'That's it!' You attempt to cast a state of slowness upon her, but she seems completely immune. The effects wash around her like water around a stone, completely unaffecting her.

If anything, it only seems to anger her more.

>>2683326

Your next thought, 'I have to calm her down!' comes from a place of logic, but the idea does not translate well to reality. Your calm emotions spell also seems to have no effect on her, as you are dealing with the rage of ten-thousand years of madness and a splintered psyche.

Her hands come together and she forms a lance of moonlight, holding it high over her head, ready to hurl it at you! Such a weapon would impale you utterly, and you haven't cast any of your protective wards!

>>2683328

'I need a distraction!' you think, and the first spell upon your lips is the one you just read about. Sunbeam! Holding up your hand, you blast her directly in the face with pure radiant light, temporarily blinding her! She screams and hurls the lance, but due to your beam, she misses! The lance slices into the ground to your left, utterly annihilating the rock as it travels through the stone. Such an attack would've instantly ended your life.

>>2683329
>>2683332

You look up at her, seeing her attempt to cure her blindness, and realize that this is your chance! You throw out both arms and cast a spell of gasping tentacles, pouring every ounce of shadow power you can muster into it! A great sensation builds up within you as something is released deep inside, and it manifests through your power here upon the moon through the physical form of your spell.

Tentacles emerge, larger and stronger than any you have ever summoned! These writhing limbs all reach up to her, wrapping every conceivable part of her body in their powerful embrace. Her arms, legs, torso and mouth are all covered as she is wrapped tightly and held in place, but she is struggling. This power, however, is nearly equal to that of her own: you have called upon the shard of That Which Never Sleeps, and you are witnessing its physical manifestation: for now, under your control.

'I need to get off of this damned moon!' you think. 'But Faye is in Aran... my twin teleport doesn't work between realms!' You grit your teeth and slam your hands together. 'Damn that! I am Sirena Le Doux... the barriers between realms means nothing to me! I do as I please!'

Raising your hands, you open your mouth and let out a cry, calling upon every single bit of magical power you possess, channeling it all at once. Having called upon That Which Never Sleeps to hold the Moon Elf in place, now you make use of your arcane might to transport yourself to Aran! As you focus your power, forming a bubble around yourself and the elf, you concentrate every fiber of your being towards making your will reality... and realty concedes!
>>
>>2683397

With a blink of devastating arcane power, you teleport a chunk of the moon straight into Aran, crossing the barriers of time, space and dimensions to deliver yourself into the heart of your citadel. This power uses similar traits as your twin teleport, but through your connection to That Which Never Sleeps and the power you have drawn from it, you have unlocked its secrets and opened a new path of magic.

You lower your hands and stand slightly hunched-over, your body aching and in pain from the sheer magical strain. This is the kind of spell that would have killed a lesser caster, and you are reminded of when you first gazed into the Codex Arcana. Perhaps that is also why you have survived? Or is it because you are the Witch Queen? Or some combination of every element?

You know the answer: it is because you are Sirena, and you are not destined to die on some barren moon.

The Moon Elf, cut off from her source of power, hangs limply in the arms of your tentacles. Though summoned by the power of That Which Never Sleeps, they are under your control, and cannot spread its malice. Surely, however, this brash display of using its shard for this purpose has gained its attention, but that does not worry you at the moment.

For now the Moon Elf is your prisoner. In her moment of weakness and vulnerability, inviting you to the moon to ask for help, she opened herself up for this, and now she is yours.

You'd like to decide what to do with her first, but you find yourself collapsing. You are not dead... but you are very, very drained. Such a spell completely wasted your reserves. Struggling against the darkness, you barely remain conscious as your servitors rush to tend to you. Faye is not far behind; her presence in Aran is partially what allowed you to manipulate the Twin Teleport in such a manner, and she felt it. You are dragged to safety.

Meant this. Get some human sacrifice going or something to give us a quick power boost to get the princess to safety.

We still do have to mark her though. She will be an excellent character to influence the elven royal family.

Your eyes open. "The moon!" you gasp with a harsh voice. "I must return to the moon! The princess...!"

"Sirena!" Faye gently shakes your shoulders. "Calm down! What the hell happened?" She looks over her shoulder. "Is that... the Moon Elf?"

"I just brought her here," you say, panting heavily.

"...How?!"

"I need to go back," you say, pushing yourself to a standing position. You take a step and nearly fall; Faye catches you.

"You're not in any condition to go anywhere. You're completely drained!"

"Then I need power!" you shout. "Faye, the princess! The high elven princess! She's on the moon. If we can get her, I can deliver her to her family! I can clear my name!"

You try to pull away, but still fail to stand. Faye helps you to a nearby chunk of moon rock, putting you in a seated position. "So, we have the moon elf... just like we talked about, right? Can we leech power from her?"

Looking over at the pale elf strung up in the tendrils, you wonder if you can. She is unconscious, after all. "She brought me up to the moon to talk about her fractured spirit, then her darker side -- or one of her darker sides -- took over and tried to kill me. I defended myself, and now..."

You hold up your hands and look at them. They are shaking. "I... somehow... restrained her. Brought her here. I crossed realms with a spell I've never used before..."

"That's amazing," Faye says with a wide smile. "You must have done something incredible! Oh, I wish I could have seen it!"

"Now I just need to know if I can return," you say, lowering your hands. "The princess is on the moon, waiting to be rescued..."

You look up at your twin. "Faye, give me your strength."

She seems surprised, but does not argue. Placing her hand over your heart, she closes her eyes and focuses. Soon, you feel yourself swelling with energy as it pours into you through her arm, causing your breath to steady and your limbs to stop aching. Your muscles return to their proper state, allowing you to stand as your twin gives you her magic.

When you are half powerful, she stops. "Half," she says, holding up a finger. "Let us do this together."

"Fair enough," you say, approaching the moon elf. "Now, how am I going to do this..."

"The only sure way to get the moon is with moongates," you say to your twin as you approach the comatose elf. "But the secret to making them is lost. She is unconscious, and I can't drain her memories when there are several beings that make up her mind. She's broken on the inside."

"So how are we going to do this?"

"Once, Francis cast a spell that sent me into the dreams of Brutus. There, I was able to allow him to make peace with himself. Perhaps, if the two of us were to travel into the world of her mind, we could find the secret to creating moongates."

"That sounds interesting, but dangerous. I like it!"

"The problem is, Francis is the one who cast the spell. I could try to replicate it, due to my connection to the Codex Arcana... that's how I was able to do what I just did and bring her here, I think. Otherwise we'll need another way."

"I say we try," she says, motivated. "Let's go spelunking in the mind palace of the Moon Elf!"
