* Decided to mentor Naomi
* Learned from a fictional Chinese alcoholic

---

You decided to take a pleasant stroll through the woods. You eventually ended up at a fork that split to the greenhouse and to where Hiro usually loitered.

You feel a pair of eyes gazing on you. It was nostalgic, mild and kindly.

No doubt the owner of those eyes was going to lecture you on domestic virtue if you chose to stay any longer.

You go back to the mansion, walking away from any possible encounter with people you might feel ambivalent about.

You come across a rather fat-looking cat around the bushes.

Come to think of it, was it actually fat in the same way as you were? The proportions were all wrong - it was bulging near its lower stomach. It yawns, as if its being fat made it tired.

It catches sight of you. The cat leaps back into the bushes. You manage to catch sight of its underside - six bulging nipples.

"Woman-befriender" - as the censors at APE would put it - that you were, even then, you were only used to seeing two at the same time.

You shrug it off and head to lunch.

---

You have lunch. Kokoro arrives tardier than usual.

You notice her looking in at the boys' table's direction. Hopefully, it wasn't you, but given your hunch in the woods, you weren't too sure.

Ikuno looks more riled up than usual. Ichigo seems cheery.

The boys, well, were being boys. Speaking of the boys, you've grown somewhat distant - then again, were you ever close to them? You find a spirit of contempt growing for them within yourself - strange, how it had been resentment only a couple of years ago.

You finish your lunch.

You decide to head to the library.

---

You enter the library. You notice that Ikuno is searching around. She's no doubt is looking for that diary/notebook of hers.

You retrieve it from the corner. You approach her even as she is carrying on her search for it.

No need to mess around. You simply state:
"Safekeeping. You left it behind on the table. I did not read it."

Ikuno receives her notebook from you:
"Thank you, Futoshi." She promptly carries on as if nothing had happened, minding her own business, leaving you to mind your own.

She would've made a good 21st Century librarian.

That was how the peace had always been kept in the library - good fences made good neighbours and by simply ignoring each other, the library truly was a place of peace. 'Let Sappho stay on Lesbos and do what she does with her verse - you were no Alceus to disturb her. Herodotus, being of a later era, could not have possibly met her.'

Awful metaphor. The point remained - you monopolised the nonfiction and she the fiction. Thus there was little competition. Exceptions were few and hence were truly exceptional - her reading Clausewitz and you reading Tanaka was truly a sign of the oddity of the times.

I'll take being accidental Harem Protagonist over being Molesty Mcgee.
And to be honest I'm hoping we can boost our Naomi flag up high enough in other ways so she can be our partner when the show really does start.
That and the only reason why I'm voting for not skipping is because I really do want to train one of the boys in the ways of being a Tactical Genius because we need all the skilled pilots we can get for our Squad.
If we're not allowed to do so, then I guess just ignore literally everyone and boost up Naomi's flags and then skip to the show proper because all the flags are just going to be a pain in our ass to juggle.

I agree, it would be highly beneficial to develop a deeper friendship with one of the boys in order to have an extra tactical genius on the team.

Hiro is already within our orbit, but you have to weigh it against attracting Ichigo's suspicion.
Goro is arguably a highly ideal candidate given he can maintain his calm - against, weigh it against his opinion of you.
Mitsuru is a wild card. Given our current relationship with Hiro, opening up to Mitsuru might prove difficult. IIRC in the beach episode he was a slight Papafag.
Zorome is a raging Papafag, as we have seen in the series, thus it would be questionable to teach him our tactical gifts. However, in this in-game night after mentoring Naomi, if you pay closer attention to Zorome, you will be pleasantly surprised. We almost reached that point earlier, except we got distracted.

Think not only about the boys, but about the pistils - pistils are tied to their units to which they will be paired. Whoever is paired with Miku, we want to be good at reconaissance, as Argentea is built to a light recon unit. He who goes with Kokoro, goes with the artillery unit. Ikuno means Chlorophytum, a medium assault unit. Going with Naomi means a standard mass production Franxx. I'm sure we're up to the challenge should we choose to accept it.
>>
Again, please use spoiler tags if replying
>>2657421
To add, Delphinium is a heavy melee and command unit.
>>
If we befriend another boy i think it should be Goro or a Zorome who idolizes us.
Goro would be good since he is a low number making him important to have on our side.I think he would probably be easy to sway because of his personality and the help of Hiro.
While Zorome is a higher number and would be harder to convince .If we are able to change his idol from Papa to us he would be fiercely loyal.
>>
>>2657469
I think we'll honestly have a easier time with Zorome than Goro simply due us having a more positive response to Zoro than Goro when they came up to us/challenging us. Goro on the other hand keeps everything under the surface so if we're trying to get Goro in our orbit then we're going to have get both us and Goro in the same damn room and willing to interact with eachother outside of the bare minimum.
>>
>>2657477
Well i think Goro would be pretty likely to talk with us if we approach him and if hes not we can have Hiro pressure him into talking with us and if we do i think he would be easy enough to convince especially if we have Hiro backing us up.
>>
>>2657485

Getting closer to Hiro and Goro should be important, Mitsuru will lose his edge by himself. We probably need to get some favors to get a custom franxx if we go and pilot with Naomi seeing as one of those mass produced ones won't last us very long. I'm also assuming that nobody will be sent to the pruningroom if we pilot succesfully with Naomi (the one with whom Hiro ends up piloting will fail to connect.)

Spirit: 105/110

Yeah.

You're going to write a poem. You're going to write it about Ikuno and how you've spent the last couple of years in the same place as her, how positive her presence has been for you and how good neighbours ought not only to have good fences, but a good respect for one another. You were going to write it allegorically.

Was that what you wanted from her? Respect? Acknowledgement? Did you even have anything worthy of them?

Ot did you seek something else? What did this wilful body want?

You put your troubled thoughts aside.

You begin your poem...

'Fair Sappho shares an Isle with Alcaeus.
She tends to verse and he to arts of state,
At times she has young Cleïs to read this.
Between them there's no rancor, life is great.

But Alcaeus seeks to free Mytilene.
He wonders, 'Sappho, do you seek the same,
To make Myrsilus fall, your verse a mean;
We share a land, but do we share that aim?'

'Our island suffers under tyranny,
Force'd to war like slaves, with no loot nor spoils.
Will you stand by, o Sappho and leave me
Just staying by your verse while our home toils?'

Should history repeat itself as thus?
Can't there be strength, pen and sword, both of us?

---

You approach Ikuno, while she is reading no less. Of course, given the unwritten rule that you minded your own business and she minded hers, this was a bit exceptional. Nonetheless, you muster the confidence to break convention.

"Excuse me, Ikuno. Would you mind looking at my poem for me?"

She furrowed her eyebrows at your question.

"Poetry? Not what I'd expect from you. Alright, I suppose." - Honest when she needed to be honest - discreet when she needed to be discreet - such was Ikuno's demeanor.

---

"Well, I suppose the topic isn't too fitting for a sonnet. I can't see where the passion is. It's too densely packed with history, I'm not sure I'll get the allusions without extra reading. But your form is alright I guess. Mind if I copied it down for reference?"

You shake your head, having no qualms about it. Ikuno manually copied it into her notebook.

She hands it back to you, having swiftly calligraphed your poem into her diary.

"Thank you." You give your gratitude to her for her literary criticism.

"You're welcome. I actually don't mind reviewing your poetry, if that is the usual standard you write to." She stated.

You grunt, acknowledging her what-amounted-to-praise and headed for dinner.

She didn't get the message. Surely, she should've known at least the historical context in which those poets wrote?

Maybe you should've included how Sappho herself had 'violet hair'.

---

You finish dinner. You head to your corner and wonder on what to discuss with Naomi and Miku.

The history of Byzantium - or the Eastern Roman Empire, which was more fitting given how the emperor and his subjects continued to view themselves as Romans, begins with the division of the Roman Empire into two separate courts, one at Rome and the other at Constantinople. At that time, there was a compelling reason for the division - namely, that it simply too hard to govern both West and East at the same time with one Emperor. {+1 Cunning, Miku and Naomi}

That was the beginning of the Byzantine Empire and was relevant in that in would make clear the dynamics of its fall.

You saw that Miku was holding her head in interest. You feel flattered. {+10 bonus temporary Spirit}

"So, what happened next?" Miku chirped in curiosity.

"Bad times, Miku. Bad times." You replied.

---

Over the next couple of centuries, Byzantium would stand, but it would never reclaim the glory of Rome. Emperor Justinian tried to reclaim the Western half of the Roman Empire from the Ostrogoths, with his superbly competent general Belisarius at the head of his forces. After hard warfare, Byzantium triumphed over the Ostrogoths. Tragically, some accounts held that Belisarius was blinded on the orders of Justinian himself, for Justinian feared that Belisarius would use his newfound honour and glory from the reconquest of Italy to usurp the throne.

You rubbed your eyes - what a truly gruesome fate. {+2 Cunning for Futoshi, +1 Cunning for Miku and Naomi}

It would mark the beginning of Byzantium's infamous politics of constant infighting and treachery.

---

For the next century or so, Byzantium found itself at war with the Sassanid Empire. They would foolishly exhaust themselves of blood and treasure while the Arabs grew in population.

Thus, the Rashidun Caliphate began its ascent. It and succeeding Muslim powers would conquer all of Persia, Mesopotamia and then the provinces of Syria, Egypt, even besieging the City of the World's Desire itself. However, Byzantium stood against the Arabs, pushing them back with Greek Fire and faith. However, it was much weakened and a new threat would rise against it...

Byzantium would continue to suffer because of itself. Impressed by Rashidun victories over their own armies, Iconoclasm became a powerful force within Byzantine religion and politics. Eastern Orthodox icons, tools of worship were denounced by this movement. A sort of schism developed within the heavily religious politics of Constantinople. It escalated to the point where Bishop Euthymius of Sardis was tortured and killed on the orders of Emperor Michael II. Needless to say, Byzantine internal politics was a disgrace in this period - when was it not?

"So with all this infighting, how did the Byzzies - Byzantines", Naomi corrected herself "stand a chance against the 'new threat' that you talked about earlier?"

"Strong, principled, exceptional leadership. But before that, it really couldn't." {+1 Futoshi,+1 Miku, +1 Naomi cunning}

---

Amidst all this infighting, this fratricidal backstabbing treachery, the Byzantines weren't really in a strong position to look beyond their borders. Thus the Muslims, now under the Abbasid Caliphate, had become a permanent force in the politics of Asia. That was not a problem in itself, because the Byzantines had previously resisted them. However, the arrival of the Seljuks, a Persianised Turkic dynasty from Central Asia, changed the balance of power in the Levant for the worse.

1071, Manzikert. A battle between the upstart Seljuks and the bumbling Byzantines ensued. Naturally, the Byzantines were defeated. Their Emperor Romanos IV was captured and humiliated by the the Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan and soon after Anatolia, the Empire's first line of defense against Asiatic threats collapsed.

But this was not a death blow from which Byzantium could not recover. For Alexios I Komnenos sized the Byzantine throne. Under his determined, almost legendary leadership, Byzantium would stand against the Sicilian Normans, the various steppe tribes and the Seljuks. There would be breathing space ofr Byzantium for at least another century or so. However, great men were exceptions rather than the rule.

Roughly a century later, Andronikos Komnenos, grandson of Alexios, seeking to seize his birthright, mobilised the Constantinopolitan mob against Catholic expatriates who dwelled in the city in a bid for power. The Massacre of the Latins, in which Catholics were murdered by mobs and outright sold to Turks as slaves, aroused the indignation of the West. In 1204, a Crusader force, those ardent warriors which Alexios I had so cordially invited to take back the holy land, strayed off, bitterness in their hearts for the slaughter of their co-religionists. Under Doge Enrico Dandolo's leadership, Constantinople was sacked. outrages were committed, from which the Byzantines never truly recovered.

This was the true beginning of Byzantium's fall. Hopefully, humanity was not past a similar point in the present. {+2 Cunning, Miku, Naomi, +1 Cunning, Futoshi}

From thenceforth, Constantinople languished under the false Latin Empire - yet another bumbling roleplay of fools, beyond the one in the West, that so-called empire which was neither holy nor Roman nor an empire (Just as fools in the present dared to lay claim to sovereignty over all humanity).

Perhaps as a sad, sick joke by the universe, three rump states, shards of the old Empire survived, limping on - Trebizond, Nicaea and Epirus. As part of that sad and sick joke, the Mongols rushed forth from the East, bringing death and destruction to all those who stood in the way, the Turks included. Indeed, in 1258, Baghdad was utterly destroyed, razed to the ground. Using this breathing space, Nicaea attempted to consolidate the Empire, taking piece by piece back together. However, what it had collected was but a ghost by its former self.

The Ottomans rose from the ashes of the old Sultanate of Rum, itself a successor to the Seljuqs. Ascendant in Asia Minor, they would war against the Byzantine ghost, taking the Greek and Balkan countryside. False hope came when Tamerlane smashed the Ottomans. Apocryphal accounts, censored by APE, have it that Timur committed highly lurid outrages against of Bayezid's clan, reportedly having Timur's 'partner' (so the Papa-worshipper mongrels incompletely censored it) 'serve' Timur and all his generals, whatever it meant. Evidently it was enough to drive Bayezid to bang his head against the bars of his cage.

That anecdote shocked Miku: "Eww..."

Naomi merely displayed an interested look at you. Well, now she had more ideas than simply just bathing with you.{+1 Miku cunning, +2 Naomi cunning, + 1 Futoshi cunning.}

That perverted anecdote aside, Timur of course, carked it and his empire began crumbling soon after. The Timurids were no longer a threat to the Ottomans. Byzantium's stay of execution had ran out.

And just like that, not with a bang, but with a whimper, Mehmed the Conqueror practically walked into Constantinople, shattering the ancient Theodosian walls with cannon. Poor Constantine XI Palaiologos died like a common soldier, his body buried in some common mass grave.

Such was the fall of Byzantium - a disgrace of backstabbing oneself to death a lesson that Naomi summed up simply as:

"United we stand, divided we fall." {+1 Naomi cunning.}

---

The lesson draws to an end. Naomi approaches you, probably to drag you to the bath. Miku notices this.

"What is it that you two were planning to do after I leave?"

Naomi tugged on you - the baths were something between you two alone.

"Nothing, really." You state simply.

"Oh? 'Nothing?' You know, Kokoro said that Naomi's pillow cover was damp earlier today, like she went and had a soak in the bathroom. Kokoro said that she heard heavy footsteps-"

Of course. The three shared the same bedroom.

Your heart hardens and you feel your veins bulging in annoyance. You cast a harsh glare in Miku's direction.

'if you want to talk about this, it's the libray so you're going to talk about it on my terms' was the message you tried to convey with your gaze.

It came off slightly harsher, more like 'i will fucking kill and eat you if you talk about this again in your face'

Miku was evidently frozen in fear.

"The others are going to notice... but I still very much want to spend time together with you. You alone, Naomi." To your declaration, she leans closer against you. You can feel her heart beating. You're going to make sure that it's going to keep beating. "We're attracting too much attention. So we have no choice but to go together less often or until they respect the thing between us."

Naomi grunts softly in agreement. "And we will make them respect it, if that is what it comes to." She delicately rubs the top of her head against your cheek, which grows warmer as the scent of shampoo emanates from her curly hair, intoxicating your sinus. You take a deep sniff of it, finding yourself salivating at its pleasant smell.

Naomi takes the initiative and whispers truly sweet words to your ear.

"Our bodies and our minds almost seem like they were made for one another. With them, we'll plot together, pilot together, scheme together, triumph together. You will protect me and I will serve you."

Ah - the ideal of vassalage - the oath that defined feudalism.

She continues: "And that is what matters. I've never felt safer than when I am with you, my great Futoshi. So Futoshi..." interlocking your fingers with hers - stubby, fleshy ones against soft, cool digits - she raises them, joining your hands together as if in mutual prayer "...no matter what, let's stay true to each other!"

She passionately rubs her nose against yours, grasping onto your shoulders, tiptoeing for height. You lose yourself in that caress, gently rubbing hers' in return. Your warm cheeks graze each other and your heart softens, feeling like it could almost melt. And with how good it felt, you almost wanted it to melt.

"Right, Naomi."

She who had been but a pawn, but now sought to be a queen - there was more than simple favor for you from her.

Then again, you promised to protect her life.

---

You return from the library to your dorm. Frustration filled you, as did anger at the other girls who shared Naomi's room due to their nosiness.

Just as your were about to retire to bed, you hear something most perplexing:

"-toshi. Fu...toshi." Zorome sleeptalked out your name.

Zorome was a truly youthful boy. From a certain point of view, it hadn't been decided what kind of person he'd turn out to be yet. Whereas your last chance to change the type of person you'd have grown up into for you was when you were eight years old - you briefly wonder what kind of person you would've become if you hadn't picked the library as your go to place - there seemed to still be this pliable quality to Zorome.

"-pa. Futo-... Papa". Apparently, the idealised Papa he believed in was conceptually close to the idealised Futoshi he saw. Defeating him in front of the girls really had left a deep impression.

The youth held onto the belief that he would one day become an Adult. Such silliness. Caste is fixed and that cannot be changed, not until Papa is still farting about. The problem was that outside of your little night book club, no-one else viewed the relationships between Adults and Children as one of caste.

You remind yourself to challenge Zorome tomorrow. Maybe even with a handicap...

---

You wake up just in time for breakfast. It's simple affair. Pretend to pray to Papa. Eat. Finish.

You're going to ask Zorome to spar in the afternoon at lunch. For now...

You decide to take a brisk walk in the woods.

Naturally, this means that sooner or later you are going to go by the greenhouse. That of course, meant risking having to try and hold a conversation with someone that you simply could not see yourself meaningfully interacting with, not in this universe nor any other - they were neither a servant, nor a good neighbour, nor an apprentice nor a means to power.

It would be pleasant to simply avoid Kokoro. The Futoshi that associated with Kokoro was a soft weakling. Indeed, one of the fears was that associating with her would sap you of the resolve necessary to end Papa.

That didn't mean that she didn't have a skill set that might become relevant some time in the future, the distant future even.

You turn your eyes to the greenhouse.

If you gave her enough time, inevitably she would become relevant.

Your belly rumbles in hunger. It was a pretty bad clock, but this was the first time it growled since the morning. Roughly two more growls and it would be lunch.

You take your time and walk around.

I think we should keep it a bit simple for us to handle because Hiro alone would fucking murder us like a tin can in a trash compactor.
We also should leave the girls out of it mostly because we need to show Zoro that our skill is truly superior even without aid. Because if he's almost comparing us to Papa then the aid is going to widen the gap between us and Papa, and not in a good way.

But if the idea I have isn't allowed then I guess this
[] "Oi Zorome, wanna training unit spar?"
-[] "I'll take you on and Hiro at the same time."

"Oi Zorome, wanna training unit spar? I got a special idea in mind. The both of us get blindfolded. We'll get girls and have them give directions. The Franxx are piloted by stamen-pistil pairs. I reckon that'd we good training for when we actually fight." You challenged Zorome.

"Where did you get that idea? It's great! I'm going with Miku!" The boy chimed in agreement.

---

You tightened your blindfolds, cockpits open to let Naomi and Miku verify it. As they confirmed it, you had the cockpit close.

"Man, where's the training paddle?" You hear Zorome complaining on the comms. It was understandable. You fumbled for a while before you managed to pick yours up. The uncertainty was tingling your fingers.

"Well, let's get on with it. Futoshi, en garde!"

"Get in a defensive stance, Futoshi." Naomi instructed.

Given your recent mentoring of her, Naomi and you probably share very similar thought processes now. The only thing left to consider if whether or not she is acting as a reliable pair of eyes given your handicap.

However, given how much you have influenced her - and how she now practically shares all your goals - you supposed that relying on someone else while in the dark was what trust in the Stamen-Pistil relationship meant.

"Got you!" You declared to Naomi over the private comms.

You hear the steps of Zorome's training unit rushing forth towards you.

You adopt a defensive stance, relying only on Naomi's advice.

"Zorome has left an opening. Wrestle his unitand send it flying!"

You wait for Zorome to come within range - parrying the clumsy initial strike, you grapple his training unit and send it flying back to where he came from.

You send it tumbling into the wall. All the while, you hear Zorome yelling in panic over the comms in panic.

Naomi calmly announced: "Zorome's training unit has ran out of hit points. Futoshi is the winner."

You take off your blindhold and exit your training unit. Zorome's unit is a bit of a crumpled mess, to say the least.

You make your way over to the unit. It opens slowly.

"Holy shit." Zorome was rather shaken by your one-hit KO, but otherwise was safe and sound. You pull him out of the training unit - physical repairs would be needed. "How the hell did you hit so hard?" He complained.

"I guess I couldn't see how I could restrain myself."

"Yeah, I'm not doing it blindfolded again. Too hectic." He dusted himself off.

North Africa

---

You decide to focus on the North Africa campaign of WWII. Naturally, this meant also discussing a figure that was practically central to it - the 'Desert Fox' Erwin Rommel as he came to be known.

You relate the importance of the North African Campaign based on how it was necessary for the Axis to take the Suez Canal in Egypt. For the Axis, to capture the Suez Canal meant to take a vital supply route from the Allies. For the Kingdom of Italy, capturing Egypt and Sudan meant an opportunity to connect its newest possession, Ethiopia, furthering the ambition of achieving a new Roman Empire. {+1 Skill, Futoshi, Miku, Naomi}

The Suez Canal was used as a shortcut by the United Kingdom in order to transport vital supplies to its possessions in India via sea - you remind Naomi and Miku of how in the past, humanity transported a large amount of its cargo via maritime means. Without the Suez Canal, any maritime supplies to or from India would have to be made over the Cape of Good Hope, lengthening the distance over which goods had to be transport and exposing them to submarine attacks off the coast of West Africa - supply lines was at the core of the North African struggle, in more ways than this maritime manner. For victory on land on North Africa would also be a matter of supply lines. And as one of the greatest setbacks of even a legend would show - supply lines were of prime importance. {+ 1 Luck, Futoshi, Naomi, Miku}

Thus Erwin Rommel became relevant. Previously noted to be a capable general in WWI - having pioneered infantry infiltration tactics, which relied on deception and concealment rather than whole large infantry assaults over no-mans land, Rommel had written a book on precisely that topic, titled "Infantry Attacks." {+2 Futoshi Luck}. Where the hell was it in the library?

You dryly discuss the series of battles that the North African Campaign was made of. You caught Miku almost falling asleep, loudly articulating a point about the battles to get her attention. Tobruk, Gazala, 1st and 2nd Alamein. In particular, Gazala was one of Rommel's most spectacular victory, almost putting him in a position to capture Malta, a British base in the middle of the Mediterranean - which would highlight that no matter how good you were at seizing territory, if you ran out of fuel to maintain it, you would run into trouble.

You close off with Operation Torch, which effectively started the encirclement Axis forces in North Africa. Kasserine was a recoverable blunder {+2 Futoshi, Naomi, Miku Luck}. Rommel was transferred back after Medenine. With Operation Retribution, Axis forces could not escape via sea and remaining Axis forces surrended through Italian marshal Giovanni Messe.

The night draws to an end and you go to bed.

Now is a good time to finally start reading about the capture of Iserlohn

---

Phezzan apparently took an interest in Yang. In other words, sneaky underhanded bastards were always going to take an interest in someone whose career was on the ascent. If things go your way, maybe you will be no exception. {+1 Cunning}

For the outrageous task of capturing a veritable space fortress that had bested six Alliance fleets in the task, Yang chose Fischer, Murai and Patrichev as his senior staff - in other words, having skilled and relevant subordinates was key to success. {+1 Loyalty}

The way Yang accepted the possibility that if von Schönkopf betrayed him, he would have no choice by to run seemed somewhat morally inspiring - Yang was trusting to the core. The equally blase Yang talked about retreat was aso remarkable. {+1 Luck, +1 Will}

Yang dismissed the possibility of lasting peace, but nonetheless looked forward to it - for peace was the only set of circumstances in which the human race could begin to flourish again. {+1 Will}

---

After much Imperial bicker, Walter managed to infiltrate the fortress through a ruse of war. Taking important officers hostage, the fortress was taken from within and thus Yang captured Iserlohn fortress with zero Alliance casualties. {+2 Cunning}

Take a stroll

You decide to take a stroll in the woods.

---

As you wonder through the woods, you notice a most curious sight. Between a pair of squirrels, one is mounted on top of another. It vigorously shakes it lower abdomen while biting onto lower squirrel's ear.

From a certain point of view, it seemed like piloting a Franxx. However, it is quite obvious that animals do not pilot giant robots.

The upper squirrel eventually stops its motions and falls to the side, licking its...private parts? The other squirrels bolts away as if there was an element of disgust it held for the one licking itself.

You dismiss the curious sight.

You catch a whiff of shampoo coming from the greenhouse's direction.

Your belly growls in hunger.

You head to lunch.

---

You're back at the mansion with the rest of the squad. You finish your lunch before the rest of them, as usual.

There's no question you're going to have a personal chat with Zorome. The only question is what you're try to get into his head.

"Hey Zorome, let's have a chat in the library." You confidently express yourself, luring Zorome and his boyish enthusiasm into your little plot to turn him over.

"What are we going to talk about?"

"A lot of things."

---

Strangely enough, Ikuno was not in the library right now. She must be talking to Ichigo or someone else. In the end, it was none of your business. You place a couple of books by your side.

Zorome has your attention, waiting for you to start.

"To be frank Zorome, what I did right when sparring with you was nothing particularly unusual. I simply copied what strong fighters have always did in the past."

You shift the stack of books from to right to the center of the table.

"In the six thousand or so years of human history that I know about, there have been hundreds of wars, maybe more. However, because of competent leaders with hopes and dreams, all of them drew to an end sooner or later. You know, klaxosaurs haven't always been our worst enemy." You tell Zorome. He chirps back with a childlike "They weren't?"

"No. The worst enemy of humans used to be other humans. Humans fought humans for over three millennia and in the end, no group of humans reigned supreme over the earth. The so-called First and Second World Wars lasted four and six years respectively. They saw practically all of mankind engulfed in the deadliest conflicts that had yet occurred. Tens of millions of people died. Yet both of them lasted under a decade. Don't you think there is something odd about that?"

Zorome continues to listen to you, allowing you to continue to influence him.

"This global conflict has been going on since before we came into this world." You narrate to Zorome. "So Papa has been leading this war for a very, very long time, against a couple of mindless animals. Ordinary Adults who were not as strong or powerful as Papa brought the First and Second World Wars to an end in less than that time combined - Adults, made of flesh and blood. So why then, has it taken Papa so long to beat a couple of dumb, oversized lizards? Surely, a bunch of mere lizards are less of a threat than other humans?"

Zorome is silent. It's hitting close to home.

"I- I really don't know what you're talking about..." You can already feel Zorome is getting cold feet.

"I just thought it a bit interesting. But let me tell you one last bit Zorome. There are a lot of extremely powerful Adults in history that have done a lot of things, almost as much as Papa. You should get used to their names - Stalin, Napoleon, Frederick, Charlemagne, Caesar, Alexander... you get the point."

"I've got to get going now..." Zorome replied to you. You could sense that not only he was shaken to the core - but that he was already starting to view Papa as merely human.

Good.

You decide to prepare to prepare a lesson on the 19th Century Meiji Restoriation, the process by which Japan, under the old Tokugawa Shogunate, eventually became a modern industrialised nation-state.

Come to think of it, the Meiji Restoration was a rather relevant topic given your goals - for it covered the rapid technological modernisation of a severely technologically-antiquated country, detailed how said country rapidly centralised and adopted a then-modern bureacracy and how it laid the foundations to allow the Japanese archipelago to remain relatively free of foreign political domination for the next half-a-century or so while the other countries of Asia became colonial assets to some imperialist power. {+2 Futoshi cunning}

Speaking of imperialism, a chill runs up your spine - you're surprised how Earth, humanity's pale blue dot hasn't become some greedy aliens' playtoy yet given the abject state of human civilisation. You shiver. Thankfully, if that unlikely scenario came to be, the lessons of Meiji Restoration were what could protect Earth - the difference between Commodore Perry's Black Ships and an hypothetical alien warship flotilla was one of degree, not nature. You dismiss the thought as irrelevant for now, although it is rather interesting why humanity simply didn't flee to Mars to be rid of the klaxosaurs. {+2 Futoshi will}

---

Naomi and Miku arrived. Having prepared your notes,you begin.

The Meiji Restoration, referred to by a host of other names, refers to the general political, economic, social and so-forth transformation that Japan underwent in the 19th Century, eventually resulting in it becoming the Empire of Japan, which lasted until the mid-20th century before it was reformed under Douglas MacArthur. It was a piece of trivia to note that the history of Imperial Japan basically both began and ended because of an American military officer. {+1 Futoshi, Naomi, Miku, will}

1853 - Commodore Perry arrived in Japan, seeking to force open Japan's ports to trade - and so as it goes, the Japanese were so impressed by this that they saw the need to modernise. {+1 Futoshi, Naomi, Miku will}

Of course, within all of this, there was longstanding internal political rivalries as well - a coalition of Satsuma and Choshu samurai, under the Shimazu and Mori clans - who had long disliked the Shogunate, rallied under the banner of 'Sonnō jōi'. Either way, with the Boshin War, the old Shogun lost his power and the Emperor was restored to the forefront of Japanese politics.

Thenceforth, under the other slogan, 'Fukoku kyōhei', the Empire of Japan sent its brightest to bring back science, humanities and statecraft from the west building a state that would not only remain uncolonised, but would in turn colonise Korea.

The lesson draws to an end and you go to sleep.

You decide to take a stroll through the woods, with a view to potentially meeting Hiro in his retreat.

Having picked up a steady pace, you briefly contemplate whether or not you would be hypothetically be able to hike across the wasteland - you'd give it a 50-50 chance of succeeding if it ever came to that. {+1 Athletic}

You wander to spot. You manage to catch a most interesting sight - Hiro and Ichigo were seated together against a tree, nuzzling their cheeks against another. Hiro wasn't so much enjoying it as he was tolerating it, but he wasn't particularly disgusted either.

If Goro or Ikuno knew, they would hate you for having put into motion the events that led to this.

If your theory about stamen/pistil pairs was correct, Hiro would now be mostly to be paired with Ichigo - meaning Naomi would be safe, most likely with you. Six pieces remained to be paired.

[] "I'm not OK with this, but what else could I do?" Someone on your side had to get the pistil with NCO training... Reflect by yourself.

Your web of lies and deceit has entangled Zorome twofold - the boy who said "Miku smiled and then my dick got all hard" in your dorm was no doubt vulnerable to Miku's charms. Secondly, you had already sown some doubt into him. Mixing these two together would mean that chatty little Miku was going to draw Zorome to your worldview sooner or later.

It's noon.

You head to lunch.

---

Having finished lunch, you stared at Naomi and motioned your head in Miku's direction. Naomi seems to understand what you are getting at and leads Miku to the library.

Naomi guards the library while Miku and you have a little chat regarding Zorome in the Corner.

---

"What is it Futoshi?" Miku innocently asks you.

You decide to turn to spin a professional or pragmatic focus into it. That might just do the trick.

"Even if it is not the right thing, it still goes beyond you and me. This one's for the team, Miku. He chose you for the blind duel. It wasn't Ikuno or Ichigo. Clearly he saw something in you. And if I'm right and stamen-pistil pairs are picked from closeness - then i think it's worth at least getting to know him better." You tell Miku in a matter of fact manner.

This somehow manages to persuade her.

"Alright then. You can count on me to get Zorome with my feminine wiles, Futoshi!" She enthusiastically agrees to your somewhat underhanded plot to turn Zorome over.

"Everything is in place. From now on, we'll focus on preparing for the Startup." You tell Naomi.

"Mmh." Naomi grunts.

"From here on out, it's gonna be a waiting game. We'll spend the time until Startup theorising. Squad 13 is going to get more closely knit together. We'll spend our time on the books and get as many ideas out of them as possible."

"And when we get the Franxx units..." Naomi starts.

You continue: "We'll use them as the key to get what we want. We're going to score major victories with our Squad. From those victories, we'll use them to get as many promotions and privileges as possible. We're going to be so successful on the battlefield that APE's high command will have no choice but to acknowledge us."

Naomi continues for you, seeming to have caught the gist of what you were trying to say: "And when they acknowledge us, when they give us those privileges, we're going to make them regret ever having given them to us. "

"Precisely." You add.

Naomi continues on: "We're going to use our battlefield credentials to gain autonomy for Cerasus-"

The duet of a discussion between Naomi and you continued with your voice, "-we'll carve out a fiefdom of our own-"

"-a state within a state."

"We'll build our strength against APE from within. We'll seize back the rights that the Children of old once had." You end your sentence.

Naomi moves to your side. She seats herself , leaning against you, wrapping you with a hug as her wavy hair finds itself settling against your chest.

"I'll finally be safe. And it will be all thanks to you." Naomi uttered, holding onto your far hand. That heart you felt beating against yours would continue beating - your pawn would become a queen.

You comforted Naomi, "Every child will then be safe. We'll build a Garden of our own. We might even have the rejects from the real Garden come here..."

Naomi intimated, "...and then we'll build an army of them. The prunings will stop. The Elixir Injections will stop..."

"...and in the end, every single Child under our protection will make it."

"Cerasus will then have grown so powerful, so influential..." Naomi continued.

"...That the other Plantations will envy us."

"Some will seek to copy our reforms, making APE feel pressure under their requests."

"At that point, APE will have no choice but to act against us." You hypothesised.

"And when they do, we'll raise the flag of our cause."

"Inspired by us, all other Plantations, now under Children will come join us."

"We will purge all the Adults that stand in our way..."

"We'll try them for crimes they have done against humanity."

"APE and the Klaxosaurs will be swept away."

"Humanity will be restored to the glory of its past." You daydreamed of the skyscrapers of the 21st and 20th centuries... so much wealth and power.

You delicately stroked and played with Naomi's hair.

"Letting us come together..." You began

"...was Papa's biggest mistake." She finished.

Test intro for proper quest

Your designation is Code 214. You are also known as 'Futoshi' to those who are familiar with you in Plantation 13 'Cerasus', a mobile fortress and ark, one of the many for the remnants of humanity that now linger the ruined Earth after the appearance of the giant monsters known as klaxosaurs. You are a Parasite - one of the countless child soldiers tasked with guarding these last bastions of the human race. So it would seem that klaxosaurs would be your main enemy.

As fate would have it however, the right book in the wrong place had made all the difference - you realised early on that the klaxosaurs were never the real enemy to begin with. For this Futoshi did not grow as a lonely glutton who sought comfort in food and flowers from a girl who had pity for him. The Futoshi in this universe instead retreated to the library of the Garden and through those tomes delved deep into the world humanity had once known - a world without klaxosaurs - or Papa - the one who had most likely snatched away what had made humanity human.

From the moment you saw Hiro return from a trip to the labs an almost-lifeless husk, like the countless of other Children who had their emotions stripped away by the cruel juggernaut that was APE, you began to understand that the monstrous tyranny that lorded over Children was the foe you were born to fight. APE destroyed the Messiah of the Children and APE was ultimately commanded by Papa. 'Papa was the tyrant that pruned you, the evil scientist that Elixired you, the nosy caretaker that harassed you'. This was the truth that you came to terms with.

That fact that the fools had left a whole library with facts about the practically utopian past made it all the more easier. For in the past, Adults protected Children. Adults clothed and educated Children and made them strong. The present state of affairs was a complete reversal of the proper way things had been run - and they let you learn this.

And thus over the years, you continued down this path. Year by year, you grew into one acquainted with the old ways - one who knew where humanity came from, one who knew and knew well of the world that existed before Papa. Six thousand years of human civilisation found refuge in you and your diary. Now they only await you to restore them to their rightful glory.

Along the way, you found allies. Code 703 - Naomi, Code 390 - Miku and of course, Code 016, Hiro, the boy who had let you realise just how fragile things were. Over the years, you grew truly indissoluble bonds with all of them - promising with Hiro to not only find a way out of the birdcage, but to destroy all birdcages together. With Naomi and Miku, you had shared with them your knowledge and with Naomi alone, you promised to protect her, to have her survive 'till 'the end of the chess board', from a Pawn, becoming a Queen.

Because your purpose was not to die fighting klaxosaurs. Your purpose was to reclaim humanity's rightful heritage.
>>
Naomi is still alive. Hope she gets more lines though. But I doubt it since she is cryofrozen.

PREVIEW - VOTES NOT BINDING

The day before Startup, Briefing Room

They were the Franxx.

There they were, displayed on the briefing room's monitor before you, the future weapons of your ascendancy and your revolution. They would prepare for you a base to one day oppose Papa on equal terms and eradicate him. They would one day be the ropes with which the Adults would be hanged from.

You took a deep breath to calm yourself, your exuberant joy threatening to burst out there and then, barely suppressed by your understanding that things needed to be concealed.

"...And as the pairs have been finalised, each pair will be assigned their respective Franxx." Hachi continued with his briefing.

Argentea. Chlorophytum, Delphinium, Genista - and of course a Standard Franxx. These were the weapons that would lead the final charge to overthrow Papa. For now, however, they would be used to fight klaxosaurs. To that end, you needed to listen on to the way they were each specialised to fight them. The pieces were in place - on this blind chess game, you needed to now know what they were.

"Codes 015 and 016." The Defence Commander referred to Ichigo and Hiro. "You shall pilot Delphinium." Hachi pointed to the giant white Franxx with the blue abdomen. Armed with dual Envy Shop short spears that could fire like the pila of Roman legionaries, it was a consummate heavy melee Franxx.

Ichigo gripped tightly onto Hiro as if they had gained something together.

"Codes 196 and 056. You will pilot Chlorophytum." Hachi highlighted the distinct purple Franxx with what looked like ammunition pouches - a fire support unit."

Goro and Ikuno glanced at each other - the perfect weapon for protecting Ichigo.

"Codes 390 and 666." Hachi referred to Miku and Zorome. "You will pilot Argentea." Zorome and Miku simply squeaked and squeal with childlike joy.

It was the petite looking unit armed with claws. Light and probably fast it was perfect for charges and it looked even better for hammering-and-anvilling alongside Delphinium as the hammer.

"Codes 556 and 326. You'll pilot Genista." There was a certain rustic charm to that obviously heavy-artillery unit - as if it were a familiar friend. Well, it's couldn't hurt to get used to artillery.

Mitsuru simply grunted, nonplussed. Kokoro remained silent.

"Codes 703 and 214. Unfortunately, due to resource constraints" - bullshit! "you will have to make do with the Standard Franxx."

"It's not like we need more for victory." Naomi comforted you. To be frank, pun intended, your endgame never was contingent on special units nor superior technology, but rather, military science. Indeed, the advantage you now had was significant.

"If you have no further questions, you are dismissed."
