You awaken in a desolate wasteland, ashes thick on the ground and air, fires burning bright in the horizon. Your body, decrepit, your soul, hollow. What curse could have birthed your wretched existence upon this forsaken land? You don’t have a name, for there is none here to grant you one. Perhaps in time you will have one. What could this pain deep in your bosom be? Is it despair? Is it anger? Or perhaps it is just the emptiness that aches to be filled? Head and arms raised to the heavens, you cry out for help. Try as you may though, for only a measly croak came out of your shriveled throat. Pitiful it is, but the sheer desperation within your voice had reached a merciful ear. From the grey sky, a ray of light descended and the visage of a beautiful lady came upon you. Filth, ashes and dust swerve away from her, the lady’s purity remains untainted. This goddess have listened to your plight, and her voice most soothing.

“At ease, Soulless. I hast listened to thine plea, and thine plea I shalt answer. Most accursed and miserable Soulless, thine existence are us gods’ oversight. Birthed outside thine cycle, abandoned by fate. Thine suffering is mine shame, Soulless. Unbound, forever fleeting, forsaken Soulless, I shall grant you one gift. Thine gift is the gift of destiny. Close thine eyes and see. What doth thine eyes see?”

The goddess’s face slightly frowns, a single teardrop lines down her cheeks.

“Oh, poor Soulless. What horrible tragedy thou have come upon. A wretched start and a wretched path thou have come upon. Oh, abandoned Soulless, My gift promised to thine is one, but for this misfortune I offer thine another. My tears, this gem, shall grant you protection in this dark path. A destiny filled with hardships await thine, my Soulless. Know this that I shall forever look after you, in the brightest day or the darkest night.”

A single gemstone descends upon your shrivelled and skinny hand, clear blue in colour. A soothing breeze pass over as soon as the [Goddess’s Tear] is in your grasp. The soothing air breaks you away from your trance, the goddess now gone. Now you are truly alone in this desolate wasteland, burning hellfire lighting the unreachable distance.

Feeble cursed one, do you stay in your wretched state, or do you march forth towards your [DESTINY]?

Your naked and fragile body face the full force of the wasteland’s searing wind of ashes and dust. Had it not been for the gift from the goddess, your body would have been torn apart in matter of seconds. This path was never an easy one, but in this path lies glory. In this path lies victory! In this path lies…. your [DESTINY]!

The further you go, the less demanding the current weather become. The thickness of ash and soot on the land slowly dissipate and life flourish more and more. No major life can be spotted though, safe for some skittering vermin and insects, scrapping through whatever that is left on these parts. Soon, a distinct sound reaches your ear. Funny how easily you recognize this sound. The sound of battle, the clash of steel and flesh. Horses neighing and battlecries ringing through the air.

You were attracted to this sound, like moth to flame. Your pace quickened from walking to running, as if your life counts on it. There, a glimpse of your [DESTINY] is presented to you. The [Deathknight] in your vision, clashing with other combatants not unsimilarly dressed as him. Though outnumbered, his assailants were pushed back by the sheer force of his strength.

There lies your promised path, but what’s left is how you shall take it?

You lie in wait, carefully observing the towering Deathknight cut down his foes one by one. His giant sword swung effortlessly upon his enemies. One of them dared to strike him from behind, but foolishly shouted while doing so. In a matter of seconds, the Deathknight spun and sliced him into two, both halves of the dead warrior’s body flying opposite directions from each other.

“Is this all the Dark Lord could muster. I am not impressed.”, the Deathknight proclaimed proudly, his voice shook your Soulless body unlike any other.

“You will pay for this foolishness Saladin! The Dark Lord offered you the world and you dare spat on his face!”

“I spat on his incompetent envoy whom could do nothing but watch themselves slain by mine hands. Speak volumes of his capabilities. Can you even call yourselves Deathknights?”

“You won’t be so high and mighty when we march back to our lord with your head on a stake Darius!”

The angered deathknights charged at once towards Saladin, all 4 of them that are left. As if anticipating this desperate charge, Saladin simply poised his body and readied his giant blade with only his left arm. In a flash, all 4 of the deathknights lie dead, ironically. Ghastly smog rises from their armour, horrifying cries followed.

“A King seizes and rules! Tell your “Dark Lord” that the moment I offer my blade to him is the day that he leaves his severed head under my boots!”

You are at awe by this monster’s power. At first glance it would simply look like simple and mindless brutality, but every strike Saladin the Deathknight deals is precise and true. Not a single second is wasted and not a moment spent on arrogance and overconfidence. Before you know it though Saladin’s sight are diverted to your frail body. You could not tell what emotion he is conveying behind his helmet and hood, but his presence somehow demands you to confront him.

How do you reciprocate this invitation?

To respond with violence would merely show our own foolishness and lack of understanding of our own limitations. We cannot defeat him as we are now.

And yet to kneel before him would be to show weakness. Even if he is to slay us, we shall face death with dignity.

If we are to acknowledge him, a slight bow of respect or inclination of the head will suffice. But we will not prostrate ourself before him here except in death.
>>
>>2638733

His sheer presence was overwhelming. Any men would have prostrated upon the sight of this warrior, out of respect or fear. But you are no mere man, Soulless as you are. This is the path you must tread and you shall not kneel before the first threat you see.

You stood tall against Saladin, and with every second passing you feel as if Saladin’s glare growing sharper and your frail legs growing weaker. The deathknight took a few stride forward while you can only push a meager step towards him. Soon, he rendered upon you the full weight of his authority. Saladin easily overshadowed your physique, him being much taller and bulkier that you are. His eyes resembles two blue flames behind his skeleton helmet, piercing your hollow body. He raises his arm and the fear of mortality grips your heart. Is this the end?

“Impressive. It is no easy feat to stand tall against me, wretch! You are either foolish or brave. The former incapable of feeling fear, and the latter conquered their fear. Either way, such character are scarce few in this land filled with cowards and weaklings. Bow to me, for you are in the presence of King Saladin, the greatest Deathknight this land ever knew!”

With that simple command, your legs were lowered to the ground by themselves, obeying Saladin’s orders. Left knee and right foot to the ground with your back and head lowered, the shadow of the deathknight that enveloped you now felt more ominous than ever.

“Swear upon my name, wretch! Swear upon it that you will serve me, that you will fight under my name! That you shall be the greatest this land will ever know, only second to me. Swear to be my apprentice, and be honoured by this opportunity given to you!”

You croak out exactly what he wanted you to say, even if it felt like your throat is bleeding.

“Rise, my apprentice! It is time to prove yourself in combat! Such is the nature of deathknights, to revel in violence! To revel…..in DEATH!”

A black sword is thrown at your feet, the obsidian coloured blade gleams upon the dim light of your surrounding. A faint groan can be heard nearby.

“Sa…..la….dinnnnn!!!”

An upper half of one of the deathknights opposing Saladin is still moving, swinging his blade wildly. Madness can be seen from this decrepit deathknight’s eye. You know what you must do, and you shall do it. The question is, will you succeed?

Picking up the heavy blade, you stagger forward to the disgraced and maddened warrior. Though the weapon weighs heavy on your skinny and wrinkled arms, the glare of Saladin expectantly watching you made it all the more lighter.

The deathknight is half of a man he was, and it is time to end his suffering. Amazing how for how severely injured he is, he can still swing his greatsword like that in reckless abandon, as if he is fighting an invisible enemy with boundless hate.

“Sala…..dinnnn!!!! Fight me you kuh- cow- cowarrrrddddd!!!”

You stand before him and both his and your eyes met.

“Sa….ladin! Today you fall by my handssss!!!!”

A vertical swing by the deathknight was aimed for your legs, but is deftly deflected, though staggering you slightly due to your currently unfit physique. On the next swing however, he misses and you took the opportunity to dismember his sword arm. He doesn’t even react, just groaning as if he felt nothing, now flailing his shield arm relentlessly. [19]

The fight’s not getting any better though as now you have a piece of metal used for shielding singing around even faster than the sword around your legs. The shield repeatedly hit your legs, forcing you to lower down. However, you are now closer to him and the shield arm is also dismembered. [10]

But, as victory is so close to grasp, the top half of the deathknight flung onto your body, his armour threatening to crush your frail body under it’s weight. To make matters worse, the deathknight is now fervently tearing upon your dried up skin and flesh with his very teeth. Like a rabid dog he forces his mass unto you and bites your neck. Consciousness soon fade and the weight of the deathknight slowly disappears. [1]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You find yourself lying in front of a campfire. On the opposite side of the fire you see the terrifying visage of Saladin. You very well know you have failed your master, and in the first test of worth no less! Such failure in front of the man of Saladin’s calibre is unforgivable, even more so when considering his pride and fierceness! But maybe the path of redemption lies open still…

“Master… I….”

Your voice is as raspy as it gets, but not as bad as before. Maybe the rest after your defeat did do you good.

“What…. did I do wrong? Where did….. I fail?”

Saladin simply looked at you, but his gaze that was sharp now looked distant, as if he is staring at someone else entirely. He snapped out of it soon enough though and the heavy aura around him returned. He then answered your question.

“It can be simply attributed to your incompetence in battle. You swing your sword as if you’ve never even held anything heavier than a twig! Then again, you do look like a walking corpse so that’s not surprising.”

He then rose up, the fire giving his skeleton helmet a terrifying shade.

“Your footwork is severely lacking and your moves are too wide. If you were just a little bit smarter you could’ve killed that living corpse a thousand times over!”

A stern response, albeit surprisingly useful considering that anybody else would have expected abuse and insult coming from such a prideful warrior.

“Now rest, as any lesser warrior should. Your wounds are healing quite nicely because of that gemstone on your palm there.”

There lies on your palm, as he said, the [Goddess’s Tear]. Truly a magnificent gift to have kept you alive from such a grievous wound.

“Do not be conceited however, for overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer. To rely on your tools more than your mind and body is foolishness of the highest degree! Even a favoured of one of the gods can die.”

A fair warning, and one you should feel grateful for. Reflecting upon it, you fell asleep again, waking up with the first light of dawn greeting you. Now you are much farther than the wasteland you came from and finding yourself in a forest. Beside you are seemingly looted pieces or armour from fallen deathknights and the sword you used yesterday. Obediently, you wear it. A surge of confidence flows through your body, boosting your courage. Not further from the camo is Saladin riding on a daunting steed. The horse he rode on exhales black smog every second and it’s eyes glows light blue just as it’s rider. Your master moved on and you followed without question.

The path will be long and uneventful it seems. What would you do to fill the gap?

Looking down, the forest tracks slowly transition to proper stone road further forward. Perhaps you are getting closer to a village or town? Would it be a good idea for a deathknight to just walk into settled area? For Saladin, he would doubtfully have any problems with whatever meagre resistance mere guards can muster.

Assumptions can only go so far though, and you decided to ask Saladin himself of where you both are headed.

“Where are we headed Master?”

“Where the road take us, and wherever you can hone your blade.”

A simple and concise answer for a similarly formatted question. Saladin’s mighty steed gallops laxly through the road. An image unfitting of such a terrifying beast, more fit to race through the battlefield. Chirping of birds and creaking of insects accompanied the green scenery around you, but alas, all good things must come to an end.

In the middle of the road, a body lay unmoving. Upon closer inspection, it is the body of a woman in armour, with the symbol most probably belonging to the local lord. She is not totally unresponsive as you lay her by a nearby tree.

“Pl-please….save my brother….. Wyverns…. Ambushed us…..”

Just as she said that, loud roars of the aforementioned beast fill the air. Birds flee from the trees upon hearing it and the insects grew silent. Saladin remained indifferent. Looking at you, perhaps he is waiting for your response to the situation.

[Saladin Relation (+1)]

“Master Saladin, allow me to redeem myself by slaying this “wyvern”.”

You kneel down, asking for your master’s blessing.

“Very well. March forth my apprentice, and prove yourself.”

You looked back to the bleeding girl for a moment before leaving her. She is of no importance to you, and there is no way you would toss away the opportunity to impress Saladin.

The beast rampages not far from where you found the woman. From the distance you can already see the beast’s swooping down and gliding back up. A lone warrior faces this winged horror, sidestepping its advances and slicing it with his sword. The cut was shallow, but the damage seems to be slowly adding up.

In a fit of misstep, the young warrior leaves himself open and was swooped down by the wyvern. The jaws of the beast did not reach the man, but he is knocked back, hitting a tree. He soon fell unconscious.

Leaving no time to spare, you rushed into battle, the wyvern recognizing you as its next prey. It remains content on trying to pick you off from the sky just as it did to the fallen warrior. Troublesome to be sure, but not without a way to overcome it. Prepare for battle!

[Saladin Relation (+1)]

The great beast descends from the sky, diving headfirst at you. Its row of razor sharp teeth threatens to skewer your bones, grinding it to dust. The reliance on this tactic shall prove to be its downfall however as you easily anticipated this attack. As the wyvern’s head swooped in for the kill, you sidestepped it as the warrior did, but also inflicted a deep cut on its neck unlike the warrior that aimed for its head. [16]

This wound knocked the sly beast out of the sky as it bleeds. Its breathing now terribly hampered by its neck wound. Unable to muster enough stamina for flight, it settles for using its large physique to overpower you on land. Tail whips and wing swipes were given, but none could deter you from cleaving the weakened beast. Its wings are now in tatters, tail cut and one of its eyes blinded. [18]

Even so, a cornered beast is not to be taken lightly. It trashes with ferocity previously unseen before, catching you off guard. Leaping up and down in desperation, it is hard to land a hit on the wyvern. Soon, it manages to land a body slam on you, causing you to fly backwards. [9]

Of course, this last ditch effort drained every last bit of energy left inside of the wyvern as now it lays half dead. Limping forward, you drove your black sword down on its skull, the wyvern dying not with a mighty roar, but a laughable whimper. You stood victorious against the beast, your very first kill.

Saladin looks pleased, or at least you think he is since it is hard to know what kind of emotion he is conveying. What you can be sure is that he is in no way disappointed by your performance.

“Very well done, my apprentice. Slaying a wyvern, though weakened, alone, is no easy feat for a warrior of your calibre. Perhaps foolhardiness is not the only talent you possess. There is hope for you still it seems.”

Praises from the prideful Saladin is not common, and one you can be proud of. With this, your past defeat most surely will be forgotten and Saladin will most probably share more if his knowledge and experience in combat. In the aftermath of this bloody battle, what do you do?

So how big was this wyvern?
>>
>>2639539
>>2639783

A mighty beast such as the wyvern….its body parts most probably are items of value. Instinctively you crave for the gratification of material gain. Deep in your hollow core, something emerged. Is it want? No, more specific. It is [Greed]. Avarice, possessiveness, materialism. The imperfection every living being have, some stronger than most. It is an abstract hunger that can never be sated, such is our nature. Ironically, this desire to have more and more filled a small, but noticeable portion of the void within you. Perhaps this is one of the missing piece needed for a Soulless like you to become whole.

The wyvern itself is quite big, bigger than Saladin in height and tenfold his length. Its scales are as green as the trees in the forest, much to its advantage in ambushing prey. It is quite durable though it does not protect the whole body. Nevertheless, you peeled off its scales and cut off its horns and fangs, parts that would prove to be valuable when sold. A rag was torn from your armour to store your loot.

Before you could lug it all off, the fallen warrior from before groaned in pain, waking up from unconsciousness. From lying on the ground, he forced himself to stand upright, supported by the tree near him. He tried to walk, but fall face first to the ground shortly after. Looking at Saladin for a moment, your master knew what you intend to do, and he asked you why.

“Because they gave me the chance to slay that wyvern and grow to even greater heights. I owe them that much.”, you told Saladin.

Saladin simply turned around, but not leaving. It is a way of saying he did not want to help but he is not exactly against helping them. Dragging two unconscious and heavily armoured individual is no easy task, especially with the loot you are bringing. Your master sighed at your situation and gave you an ultimatum as not to slow him down. Leave your loot here and focus on dragging the two, or leave the two and focus on your loot.

You choose the former. The loot are shoddily hidden in the bushes, you're simply content with nobody ever getting your hard earned reward. [Greed] truly is a loathsome thing isn’t it?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The sun shines greatly on top of your head, its heat threatening to burn you alive. Yet you go on, even with the extra load. A small town can be seen in the distance, people walking in and out of its gate. As you and Saladin approach the main gate, the guards predictably readied themselves in the presence of your master.

“H-halt! What business you have here, demon!”

Their reaction are not unwarranted, with Saladin being a deathknight and you dragging two unconscious body, it is simply instinctual to be agitated. What do you do now?

Master Saladin’s patience is thinning, and you do not wish to make an enemy out of these people. So, you decided to just hand over the two siblings to the guards. They are baffled at first, even angered, probably thinking that you have inflicted these wounds on them.

“These two fools were ambushed by a wyvern near the forest. We would have left these wretches for dead had it not been for my apprentice’s insistence. If you continue on to disrespect me, you will find that the boundary of my kindness are much shorter than my apprentice.”

That alone was enough to deter the guards from pressing the matter, instead calling for assistance in treating the wounded warriors. A priestess came forth out of the town gate, and like the guards, are shaken by Saladin. She however is quick to recollect herself and treat the wounded. Out of her mouth, songs detailing stories of old and praises to god was sung. Cuts and bruises visible on the brother and sister closes and heals slowly but surely. She then ask for the two to be carried away for rest.

A light bow was given to you and Saladin before she skittered off into the town, marking the end of your duty in saving the two siblings. Saladin is more than happy to continue his journey along the stone road. Not a second after you turn your back though, you can hear the guards throwing somebody out of town.

“Off with your hide, bloody thief!”, one of the guards said as he threw someone into the ground. A dark skinned female wearing green clothing writhed in pain before walking away.

Both you and Saladin did not bother to check on what’s happening. The journey resumes without a hitch, and camp is made when night descends upon the land.

The fire crackles and pops, defusing the silence of the night. Lazily, you stoke the flames with twigs present around where you sit, delighting on the increase of heat and size of the flame. Saladin’s steed is nowhere to be found, as mysterious as its owner.

The night is still young and the crescent moon’s silver light contrasted the darkness that waits beyond the warmth of your fire. Cricket sounds fills the air, adding to the serenity of the scenery. The peace is broken though as Saladin decided to speak with you.

“Apprentice. I sense a void in you. A sickeningly gaping, bottomless pit resides where your soul should be. What manner of creature are you truly?”

The moment Saladin asked what you truly are, you feel a certain melancholy in your heart. You stroke your wrinkled and dried skin. What are you?

“I am a Soulless, Master Saladin. I was born as is, incomplete, lost in the ashen wasteland you found me in.”

Saladin remained silent for a few second before continuing.

“A Soulless…..the wheel of life, at times spin so magnificently, not just great heroes, but even an immortal can be birthed into this world. Just as that is the case, the inverse could happen as well. When the stars are right, the wheel of life spins furiously, so much so that should a mortal ever hear it spin, they will die of pure horror. On this rare occasion, often once in a millennia, a being without soul is born to this world. Wretched be its existence, the entropy of the material realm forever gnawing at their physical form. For without a soul to link your body to the spirit realm, you are but a corpse walking on earth.”

A lengthy and long winded explanation, quite unexpected to be coming from someone like Saladin. Then again, there is no easy way to describe your condition. From the looks of it, you are not the first to don the title of “Soulless”.

“Being born without a soul comes with its own benefits, though this is for you to discover yourself.”

With that last remark, Saladin returns to his silence. Having nothing to do, you go and practice your blade. And so you did, but a little bit further than the camp as to not bother your master. The black blade you wield cleaved repeatedly into a nearby tree. Your concentration is broken however when a noise can be heard in the bushes around you. What do you do?

“Halt! Who goes there?”

The sound created in the bushes around you suggest that you are not in the presence of just one, but maybe two or more individuals. They stopped moving as soon as you call out to them, but refuses to come out. Doesn’t matter you can wait.

“Aye, wait! Don’t attack me! I come in peace!”

“Please…. I do not mean to offend….”

Two females came forward out of the brushes. You recognize both of them. First is the thief who got kicked out of town shortly after you and Saladin finished taking care of the siblings. Her black hair flows out of her green hood and her tan skin reflects the moon’s glow. Next is the priestess from before who healed the two siblings. Similarly, she wears a hood, albeit white in colour. Her blonde bangs compliments her fair skin, yet this beauty is diminished by the look of worry carved on her face.

It seems that they both did not anticipate on each other to appear here tonight. It can be predicted that they both have their own agenda in confronting you, and in secret no less. Without hesitation, the priestess begin talking to you first.

“Please, you and your master. Saladin is his name was it not? The town is in grave danger, hundreds will die! Please help us I beg of you!”

Next is the thief, ignoring the priestess’s plea for help.

“Hey, I saw what happened out there during the day. You’ve beaten a wyvern did you not? I have a place where you and your master’s talent can be used! I can promise you gold and silver as far as the eyes can see, as long as you follow my lead! I have this treasure map see? Now I just need proper crew to dig up the loot!”

Two ladies, both offering different paths to take. Do you accept this detour? Or do you follow the road already present in front of you?

“Both of you presented a compelling case, but ultimately Master Saladin will have the final say. Present your circumstances to him and listen to his answers.”, you answered to both of them before leading the two ladies back to your camp.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And so did the two women explained their predicament to Saladin. Beneath the crescent moon, around the stoked flames, Saladin’s judgement finally came.

“The priestess’s cause are selfless and noble, but one that reeks of unrewarded self-sacrifice. Such path are for the unambitious and narrow minded for those who are content with being remembered as a mere legend forgotten in but mere generations.”

The priestess looked down, her distraught expression meeting the cold ground.

“The thief’s cause promises glory, but revels in uncertainty. A woman who lives her life taking what others rightfully own, can she be trusted to hand over such opportunities to you, apprentice? Do not mistake the shade of a vulture as respite from the sun’s glare, young one.”

Saladin rise up, standing tall over all three of you.

“Ultimately, none of the path both of you offer are worthy of note to me. Begone. Out of my sight before my patience run dry.”

The thief, angered by Saladin’s comment, foolishly leaps up and threw a tantrum.

“What? I promised you riches beyond your wildest imagination and you called me a vulture? Screw you!”

Saladin’s glare grew sharper, but the thief is too angry to realize. The priestess humbly apologized and excused herself, tears running down her cheeks.

“What is your choice, apprentice? Even after listening to what I have to say.”

You think long and hard on your next decision. As Saladin had said, none of these path are worth taking, all things considered. But upon watching the tears of the priestess, you immediately are reminded of the goddess who raised you from the ashes of the burning wasteland. A being so immensely powerful took pity on you, even shedding tear for one as wretched as you. Gripping the gemstone tight, the gift from the goddess, you made your choice.

“Master Saladin, I would like to help the priestess.”

Saladin was not surprised, and neither is he amused by your answer. The deathknight further questions your choice.

“And why have you come to that decision, apprentice? Answer wisely, for I have no time for childish heroics.”

With a deep breath, you answer.

“She proclaimed a threat capable of slaying hundreds. If I were to become stronger, I will have to find mightier adversaries, must I not? Her cause offers me just that. And it would not hurt to help these people along the way, won’t it? Becoming a legend might not be the highest of achievements, but I believe that it will come to be of use, in time.”

Saladin grew silent for a moment before responding to your answer.

“Very well, but on two condition. One, this task you shall undertake alone without my help or guidance. Two, you must cull this threat in 3 days time and bring the proof to me.”

With the order given, Saladin waste no time in calling his mighty steed and riding off to the distance, but not before giving you his last words.

“Meet me at the Imperial City during the promised day, and should you break our promise, your apprenticeship with me ends at that very moment!”

Now you sit in front of the shrinking camp fire, the fuming thief still here throwing a tantrum. The night grows older and the crescent moon grows ever brighter. What would you do before retiring for the night?

I'm back! Get your votes in and sorry for disappearing yesterday. SEA time was 3 am and im sleepy.

The [Goddess’s Tear] radiates warmth from the palm of your hand. The goddess smiles upon your action, for without a doubt her vigilance had caught wind of your virtuous decision. Clasping it between both of your hand, you enter a trance, as if you’ve just slipped into a dream.

Light descends from the heavens, repelling the darkness of the night. Angelic hums fill the air, lifting all pain, physical and mental, from your body. Then, a scenery you recognize repeats once more before your very eyes. The goddess floats down from above, as beautiful and transcendent as she was on the day you were born. This time however, she wears a radiant smile on her face, happiness reflected on her clear blue eyes. Her hands embraced your cheeks as she speak.

“Oh, poor Soulless, how mine heart leaps with joy. My mercy thou hath reciprocated upon the pleading priestess of mine. To have mine love given to those who are in need, I could not hath asked more from thine. Virtuous thine heart be, mine dear Soulless, and virtuous thou path too shall be, if fate willing.”

You could not turn away from the goddess’s visage, but then again, neither do you want to. Behind you, the thief can be heard, her legs falls to the ground, most probably assuming a kneeling stance upon looking at the goddess’s appearance.

“Though, my heart weeps for my inability to present a gift for thine kindness. Mine very presence here are against the wheel of fate. But rejoice, dear Soulless, for thou shall have mine blessings for as long as thou stay on the path of righteousness.”

Her hands slowly releases your cheeks as she lifts up back into the heaven, taking her warmth with her. Before she can fly away though, you held one of her hands and asked.

“What… is your name?”

Giving a gentle smile, she answered before leaving.

“In thine tongue, mine name is Drana. The priestess serves me, and once again, thank you my dear Soulless.”

With her departure, the first ray of sun hits your face, a blinding ray of heat, devoid of the comfort of the goddess, a sign of you returning to the waking world. The female thief is still sleeping in kneeling position, not showing any sign of waking up, perhaps for the better as there will be more questions to answer should she wake up.

The town is a fair distance away from your camping ground, as you reach there later that morning. The guards recognizing you, immediately gave you passage.

“Hey, you’re the guy who’s with that Deathknight right? Where is he? Well, of course you can enter. We owe you big time for slaying that wyvern. Also, the two knights you helped yesterday are asking to meet their saviour. They’re upset when we tell them that you and that Deathknight already left. They’re still at the tavern methinks. [Jorvass]

Yes, first order of business is to find the priestess of Drana that resides in this town. Problem is, you do not know your way around this town. Your attire and looks makes it even harder for you to ask for directions from the locals. As you are struggling to get to your destination, a familiar voice greets you from behind.

“Hey!”

Turning around, you see that it is the thief from before. She smiles gleefully, as if your very being is amusing to her. Somehow, this “vulture”, as Saladin called her, reeks of trouble.

“D-don’t be like that! You seem to be in a spot of trouble are you not? Come on, I can help you. And… can I see that gemstone you have last night? The one that… you know….”

Defensively, you hid the gemstone from this thief. An understandable action to take, considering who you’re dealing with.

“Alright, not like I want to steal it or anything! I just want to look at it for a while.”, she said, pouting.

Explaining your plight, she agreed to help you as a sign of good will.

[Jorvass’s Chapel of Drana]

Soon enough, both of you arrive in front of a humble chapel. Children came in and out from it, signifying that perhaps this building also doubles as an orphanage. Coincidentally, the priestess too came out just as you reached the door. Without you being able to react, the priestess hugged you. How do you react to this?

“Please, no hugs priestess. I have but three days to help cull threat plaguing this town, lest my master disowns me. Of course, I would not let that happen, so tell me the nature of your distress.”

The priestess, flustered, lets go of your ragged armour and blushed.

“Y-yes… of course. Let’s speak inside.”

Inside, the priestess offers you and the thief was offered meagre cups of water and hard crackers. Understandably though, looking at the state of the chapel and the apparent amount of mouths to feed here. Sitting down along with you and the uninvited rogue, she starts explaining herself.

“My name is Anastasia Namila, the lone priestess of Drana in this town. Well…. The only one conducting service for the gods in this town for that matter. I’m sure you are aware of the llomig threat the new Dark Lord presents over our land.”

Nodding, you realized that the thief had lost all interest in listening, instead opting for showing tricks with daggers to the orphans in the chapel.

“Some lordships had even pledged loyalty to this evil man, while other territories of the empire were burned to the ground for resisting. I’m afraid that… that…”

“That…?”, you ask.

“…that our lord have also knelt to him.”, Anastasia answered, almost whispering.

“I’ve seen individuals of dubious nature visiting our lord before. It sparked my suspicion, so I snuck out one night. A carriage was parked in front of our lordship’s mansion. I saw what came out of it. A corpse… in ragged robes, eyes glowing, floating. With him, a similar entourage of dead men entering the mansion. I dare not speak out against him…. alone. I had hoped to use you and your master’s skill in combat to ensure my safety as I speak against the lord…. But your master… he….”

She needs allies to thwart the local lord’s plan of surrendering the land to the invaders. A bold and smart move by her, indeed. She is right in being disappointed in Saladin’s absence.

“We need allies. More people we can trust. I know of one, but that would not be enough. Please, help me recruit more who are willing to follow my cause. I do not have much to give you, but I promise you the township will most certainly reward you for this. I know of the guard captain of this town. Find him and lead him to me so I may tell him of this plan in secret!”

A solid start for her plan. Time to start recruiting! You know of a few names now, and perhaps more will be willing to rally to her cause. Where do you start?

You looked at the thief for a moment, considering the potential of recruiting her for Anastasia’s cause. No, her prices would be too high, and the [Goddess’s Tear] is off the table. Carefully, you snuck outside while the thief is still busy performing sleight of hand tricks to the children around her. Your first target of recruitment is clear.

[Jorvass Tavern]

In this dimly lit tavern, the rowdiness of its clientele had not yet faded despite it being close to noon. It is not hard to spot the two knights from the others. Their gleaming plate armour sticks them out like a sore thumb. The brother seemed annoyed somehow while the sister still is waiting enthusiastically. Sitting on the same table as them, you greeted the two.

“Do I know you?”, the brother said with disgust, looking at your worn and dirty armour.

“You two were looking for me?”, you answered, puzzled by the brother’s rudeness.

“Not “we”. It is just my sister who’s too giddy to meet her knight in shining armour. And you certainly don’t look the part.”

“Wait brother! That raspy voice, that horrible smell! You’re definitely that guy who saved me!”, the sister said, jumping from her seat in excitement.

“Elena, please! You’re unconscious back then! And the man travels with a towering Deathknight at his side! For all we know, he could be any vagabond pretending to be our saviour, no thanks to you mouthing things off in the public!”

[Jorvass Tavern]

Indeed, there is no easy way to prove that you are who you claimed to be. Perhaps the testimony of an eye witness is needed. Nearby, a guard is seen drinking with other similarly dressed individuals. You recognize him as one of the two guarding the entrance yesterday. With him you, testify the truth of your statement.

“Yeah, definitely this guy the one who dragged you two knights all bleedin’ back to town! Shocked us rightly, I tell ya! This here warrior did all that alone while that Sardine fellow rode all high and mighty on his horse!”

Hearing that, the brother’s face grew pale in embarrassment and Elena poked fun at her brother.

“W-well… we’re still not sure if you’re the one who’ve slain the wyvern! For all I know, you might just be leeching on the Deathknight while he’s doing all the work! I-“

“Brother come on! He’s laid out enough proof already. Now you’re just nitpicking!”

The brother, named Eldwin, finally gave in. Immediately, you said what you need of them, but silently as to not alert unsavoury individuals. Then, you send them off to the chapel to be filled in on the plan. Now, who do you plan to recruit next?

With that out of the way, it is time to recruit the Guard Captain of Jorvass into our little plan. Anastasia said she knew the guard captain, so it would not be too hard to obtain his loyalty if you mention her name, hopefully. Some of the guards pointed you to the barracks where the captain is at.

[Jorvass Guards Barrack]

In the barrack where dozens of guards take residence while on duty, a lone man sat on a chair behind a desk, working on some paperwork. The other guards pointed at him as the captain. He is completely focused on signing various parchments, so much so that he did not realize you’re right there next to him. You gave him a light pat on the shoulders.

“Bwah! Don’t scare me like that! I almost thought the grim reaper’s finally coming to get me!”, the captain said, almost spilling his ink bottle and pile of paperwork.

“What’s the matter with you? You look like you’ve just came out of the gutter or something.”

You explained your situation, even hinting at Anastasia’s little plan. The captain gave you a big sigh and continues.

“I know what you want from me, as do Anastasia. I don’t hate her, but I can’t willingly put myself in that position. Tell her I will help her as much as I can, though I cannot do it openly.”

And with that, he sends you off.

Spending time tracking back to the forest where you fought the wyvern, the carcass of the beast had already been feasted by carrions and most of its valuable parts stripped bare. Scavengers works quickly during times of turmoil, and this is no exception. Luckily, the stashed wyvern parts you collected earlier yesterday was untouched. You lugged the loot back to town, and it is now late in the afternoon.

[Jorvass]

The blacksmith outfitted your worn armour with wyvern scale to make up for broken pieces of it. Some parts of the armour however must be outright replaced due to how damaged it is. The cost for it can all be covered though with the selling of the rest of the wyvern parts. You even have some spare coins from it! Outside of the blacksmith’s workshop, the crowd are gathered. Whispers of an execution is spread amongst the townsfolk. What do you do now?

The crowds gathered at the center of the town, the guards keeping civil unrest low at all times. Confusion is clear in the voices of the townsfolk.

“Why is … on the chopping blocks?”

“Outrageous is what it is! Those people are innocent!”

Some cry injustice on this turn of event. You squeezed yourself deeper into the crowd to get a closer look. On the wooden stage, one familiar face and a few others have their neck placed on top of a stone block. Said familiar face is… the guard captain! Along with him are a few other guards, still in their uniform. Alongside the unnaturally large and masked executioner a tall and gangly man in rather expensive looking clothes stood proud beside his stubby and fat crier. Said crier is saying something to the crowd.

“Hear ye! Hear ye! Our lord have sentenced the traitorous guard captain Cain Ermac and his co conspirators to death under the suspicion of cooperating with the Dark Lord’s army! Letters exchanged with the messenger of the Dark Lord are discovered in his home and the names found in it points to his aforementioned co conspirators who are also members of the town guard!”

“Horseshit! Those letters were forg-!”, one of the guards on the chopping block said before being hot by the butt of the executioner’s axe handle.

Cain, the guard captain, lie quiet on the cold hard stone supporting his neck, accepting his fate. Amongst the guard, you can see Anastasia, along with the thief and the knight sibling rushing to the scene. Her distressed look is enough to explain Anastasia’s emotions currently.

The situation have escalated dramatically. It is now clear that the lord of this town have eyes and ears that feeds him informations, evidenced by how quick Cain is dealt with. What will you do now? Know this that your action regarding this situation will decide the future of Anastasia’s plan, and the town as a whole.

That does sound like a good idea. If we get the crow to strike first then I bet we can sneak around and land the first strike. Or maybe we can get the twins to start the hacking since they don't smell. Then again....peasants don't exactly smell like rose and honey dew.
Never mind about getting the twins to do it.

My intention is either to leverage off the crowd's disposition to demand the captain and his guard be released (unlikely to succeed, but perhaps Anastasia might be better with words than we are) or, more likely, sneak the captain away in the commotion.

Picking a fight in the open isn't something I'd like to do, because it singles us out. If the crowd starts properly brawling of its own accord though, that's another matter.

The townsfolk are already opposing the idea of executing the guard captain on such suspicious evidence. The pointing of spears and blades keeps them quiet anyhow. Smugly standing on the stage, the lord of Jorvass paces back and forth, looking at the faces of each of those he put to death today. It seems the unsatisfied masses are already unhappy with the current ruling authority. It would not be too hard to incite a riot amongst the common folk. You just have to remove the one preventing it…

The guards under the lord’s command are in the way. Pushing through the crowd, you start by disarming the already overwhelmed few keeping the public unrest down. Swiftly, hordes of peasants flow out like water closer and closer to the stage of execution, with your allies emulating you as soon as they realize your plan. The guards group up, clustering around the stage, protecting their villainous lord. You and the knights easily cut your way up to meet him along with Anastasia.

“Oh what is this? The priestess of Drana giving her final prayers to these traitors?”, the lord of Jorvass taunted Anastasia arrogantly.

“It is not them that are the traitors! It was you Lord Barnes, who is the traitor! You and your goons, I shall reveal all of you for the monsters you really are, right here and now!”, Anastasia answered, challenging the lord.

“Why you insolent brat! I’ll have you pay for this insult! Guards, seize them! Executioner, perform your duty!”

The knight siblings jumped into action, dealing with the guards alongside the rioting masses, the thief disappearing out of sight and Anastasia stood tall with you, facing the lord. The executioner’s blade looms ominously above one of the captured guards…

“I trust you will not be so foolish to follow a fallen lord’s orders, lest you find yourself hanging alongside that craven.”, you said aiming your sword at the executioner.

The large man however only replied with an unintelligible grunt before slamming his axe down on one of the tied up guard’s neck, his head rolling down the wooden stage. Now, the executioner moves in for his next victim without care for the weapon pointed at his back.

“Executioner, what are you doing! End those rebellious worm you imbecile!”, Lord Barnes commanded upon seeing his guards occupied by the rioting masses.

Replying with a similar unintelligible grunt, the executioner now moves for you and Anastasia! His large axe swings ahead of you, deftly dodged just in time. This does not deter the dull man whom only focused on what he is ordered to do. From above, the axe comes crashing down on the wooden stage, lodging it deep into the woodwork and distracting the executioner.

Taking the advantage, you moved in to cut the man down to size! A few swings were dealt on the lumbering man, blood spurting out of his wounds. This only serve to enrage him even more as he violently pulls out his axe out of the stage, causing it to collapse. The fight continues on the ground.

The executioner now swings his large axe in reckless abandon, slicing traitorous guards and peasants alike in half without trouble. He must be stopped quick before innocent casualty increases. Once more, a downward swing threatens to slice you in half. Alas, as is before, it is easily dodged and you move in for the kill!

The arm of this man, unguarded, now lay bare to be cut off, reducing his ability to use brute force against you, his only means of combat. Dismembering his left arm, the executioner cried in pain, his voice deep and inhuman. With only his right arm, he clumsily swings his large axe, only to lose grip as it flies onto the fat crier of Lord Barnes, instantly killing him.

Carelessly trying to grab you with his remaining limb, he easily misses and trips down, exposed and immensely fatigued by blood loss. With one decisive swing the executioner’s head now rolls on ground. Unmasked, you can see his horribly disfigured face, suggesting unnatural circumstance of birth. A reason to sympathize with this beast of a man considering your origin, perhaps?

Lord Barnes immediately fled the scene, entering a carriage that had their arrival timed perfectly as everything fell apart. As the despot enters his vehicle, you can see a glimpse of another passenger inside it. Nonetheless, Cain Ermac’s life is saved, the execution mostly thwarted and the township rallied against the local lord. Anastasia shakes her head, discouraging chase and proceed to heal the wounded and pray for the dead.

[Jorvass’s Chapel of Drana]

The newly formed local militia made the chapel as it’s base, proclaiming Anastasia (or as she is now known as “Saint Anastasia”) as their leader. You also gained a new moniker, the “Knight in Rags” who along with Anastasia, rallied the common people against the schemes of Lord Barnes. The priestess sat exhausted after a day of service to the people. Now she is the defacto leader of the opposition along with you and assisted by the guard captain Cain Ermac. For the next battle, you must decide when to strike at the heart of tyranny, Lord Barnes’s mansion.

Captain Ermac will marshal the militia to assault Lord Barne's manor, and lay siege to it if necessary. His expertise is best used minimizing casualties among the townspeople.

While this assault (which may of course succeed in taking the manor on its own) is ongoing, we, the thief and any others with skills suited to the task will infiltrate the manor while the guards - unlikely to have yet been organized into a properly fortified defense - are distracted by the frontal assault, and attempt to assassinate Barnes.

And when presented with the head of their lord, the remaining resistance will surely surrender.

Indeed, we must press this advantage we have and strike Lord Barne’s forces before they could properly set up their defence. For that, the militia are gathered as soon as the sun shined its last ray of light. Pitchfork, scythes, hatchets and torches lined up on the peasant’s hands, ready to deliver justice upon the craven who threatened their lives.

Captain Cain marshalled the militia alongside the guards whom does not align with Lord Barne, briefing the common folks on basics of warfare and following commands. Some are weary due to the fighting during the day, but morale is still kept high by the revered “Saint” Anastasia who even though worn by her duties on taking care of the wounded, still leading in the frontlines along with the people’s champion, the Knight in Rags.

The crescent moon shines upon the militia as they marched towards the mansion. The air is cold tonight, doubly so than normal. A gnawing thought bites at the back of your mind, telling you that something is not right upon seeing Lord Barne’s forces rallied in the courtyard of his mansion.

Their eyes are hollow, not even reflecting the light of torches carried by the people sieging the mansion. Faint moaning can be heard as they pace back and forth, not leaving the boundary of the mansion. A certain darkness infest this place, you just know it. The charge shall not be hindered nonetheless, as the militia launches its attack upon its target.

The guards defending the mansion suddenly rushed in all fours like animals towards the crowd. Though few, they are faster and much more ferocious, as though possessed by some kind of demon. Cain had a hard time to reorganize the panicked peasants on the front lines as you and the sibling knights cut down the crazed guards. Alas, the threat was culled though your forces suffered more casualty than expected.

[Cont.]
>>
>>2651136

Suddenly, a body was smashed through the window of the mansion’s top floor, falling flat on the ground. It is the unmoving corpse of Lord Barne, his body relieved of any sign of life, as if he died horribly before he was even cast upon the cold hard ground. From the top floor window of the mansion again, something, no, someone floats down. This person’s presence brought chills upon the spine of everyone present on the battlefield.

A skeleton, draped in black robes descended upon the militia. His voice echoes throughout the courtyard as he speak.

“Welcome, men and women of Jorvass. I did not expect you to arrive so early. I haven’t finished preparing my surprise yet. Had only your lord been more competent. Tsk, tsk…”

Anastasia is visibly shaken by this person’s presence, looking downwards and not daring to meet her eyes with the skeleton.

“Ah, I know you, priestess. You saw me in one of my many visits with your lord. Truth be told, I should have slaughtered you the moment I laid my eyes on you. You’ve been quite the thorn in my side, yes indeed…”

Without a single worry of the army surrounding him, this… thing talks freely as if there is no threat present at all. No doubt he is a minion of the Dark Lord. What will you do now?

Here is the problem I see: this enemy, powerful as he may be, is only the servant of a yet greater enemy. Even if we slay him here, I fear there will simply be yet more of his kind sent here to demand fealty, if not decimate it entirely.

In order to secure this town's safety, we need not only to protect them in this particular instance, but stave off any future threats that may come.

Since the townsfolk will not swear fealty to the Dark Lord, and this lich is highly unlikely to be persuaded to simply drop the matter, the only course of action remains to stop him by force. But even if we do this, the townsfolk will likely have to abandon the township and flee to somewhere more shielded from the Dark Lord's influence.

Regardless, in the here and now, we ought to attack, on the off chance that this ostensible confidence is actually the lich stalling for time. We might gain knowledge by listening to him speak, but that is a poor price in exchange for losing victory.

Without wasting any time, you signalled Cain to ready a charge. We must not let this lich do anymore damage to this land. Today, the Dark Lord’s army shall not claim this land as theirs!

“Ready to charge! Men, for your ranks! Follow the Knight in Rags!”

You, the knight sibling and Cain stood at the front while Anastasia stand amongst the militia. The masses are in high spirit as victory is now so close, they can already taste it. Battlecries fill the air as the militia made their final charge against the enemy. However, they could never predict the outcome of this battle, which had been rigged from the start all along.

A gigantic magic circle appears beneath your feet, encompassing the whole area surrounding the mansion. The building itself crumbles, revealing a creature made of stone. It is humanoid, but missing a head, left with but the base of its neck which has an inscription on it that is no doubt magical in nature. Wielding a circular two pronged spear, it also have a similarly circular stone structure resembling a gate on its back. Even so, the being sat unmoving after revealing itself. This combined with the manic cackle of the lich successfully stopped the charge, intimidating the militia.

“I must thank you, “Saint” Anastasia… you brought the sacrifices I needed right where I want them! You were infinitely more useful than that miserable wretch you call a lord! What was his name? Barney? Barnabus? Oh it doesn't matter. The preparation is complete! Feast your eyes upon the beginning of the end for your dying Empire! Rejoice! For your soul will be the fuel for this machine as it slays your fellow countrymen and spill out slaughter for your kin! [Soul Steal]!”

The magic circle below glows a ghastly light and somehow, you feel the life siphoned out of your body. No doubt everybody present on the battlefield felt the same, as they all fall to the ground!

“Bear witness, I, Harkon the Undying, finger of the Dark Lord, Bring the end of this rotten empire! Once! And! For! All!”

Ghostly apparition rise from the bodies of your fallen comrade, directed to the large humanoid creature. Everyone was affected by this spell as they writhe in agony, their very soul wrenched from their body. Everyone…. except you. You alone rise up from the pile of fallen men with your blade unsheathed. This spell that steals the soul of others does not work on a Soulless like you clearly.

The lich does not yet realize your presence, instead focusing on channeling his spell. Using this to your advantage, you leap up to the floating undead and sliced his left arm off him. Scowling, his channeling was interrupted and the souls he collected dived back into their respective bodies, though they still remain unconscious.

“WHO ARE YOU?!”, Harkon shouted in desperation. He demands an answer, but he will have none.

Lightning zaps out of his fingertips, striking you square on the chest. The surge of electricity numbs the sensation of touch, yet you keep on moving, walking slowly towards him like the grim reaper himself.

“ANSWER ME!”

Yet another surge of magic, now in the form of a flame blast engulfing your body, setting your armor on fire. You can smell your flesh burning, blood boiling. It is painful, but you kept on going nonetheless. A pair ethereal arm held your chest from behind as the [Goddess’s Tear] glows, elevating the ungodly amount of pain that dances within you.

“I see now! Drana you whore! Where were you when I needed you most?! Where were your mercy when I am at my lowest?! Yet here you are, shielding my enemy from my wrath! You tyrant! Answer me Drana! Answer me, Knight in Rags!”

You kept your silence, striking the floating lich down. As he kneels, your eyes met with his. Harkon’s skeletal jaw lay agape as he sees what resides within you, or lack thereof.

“You… where is your soul! Why? Why did a monster like you appear here? After all that I had planned? Why?!”

Truth be told, you have no more energy left to answer him, even if you want to. With a swing of your sword, Harkon’s head rolls on the ground and your consciousness fails you soon after.

“Hey wake up!”

A figure shielded your body from the blinding light of dawn, a knowing smile etched on her face. It is the thief, squatting beside you.

“Crazy night huh? Not every day you find yourself clutching on the head of your fallen enemy.”, the thief said, pointing to your side.

True to her words, on your left hand is the head, or rather, the skull of Harkon, still agape, eerily staring into the distance. The militia had also just recovered from the lich’s spell, waking up almost simultaneously with each other, as if dawn dispelling the influence of the Dark Lord minion’s influence.

[Jorvass’s Chapel of Drana]

[A few hours later]

Though victory is achieved, your body still needs time to recover from Harkon’s assault. A normal human would have died many times over with the amount of injury you received. Luckily, the gemstone given by the goddess saved you once again, healing you just fast enough to receive the next wave of beating. Anastasia performs her miracle to hasten your recovery. Cain leads the remaining town guard and peasants in dealing with the aftermath of the battle. The thief, her name still unknown, said that she is going to dig up whatever riches left inside the ruin of Lord Barne’s mansion. The knight siblings said that they are expecting someone from the Empire today. Elena also added that it should be a pleasant surprise for everyone involved, whatever that means.

“Thank the gods isn’t it? That we all survived to see the next day? Truly blessed we are. Perhaps this is the start towards a brighter future, at least for this township. You have my unending gratefulness. Even if everybody else were to forget you, I will sing your tale for the next generation to tell.”, Anastasia said, laying her head beside you.

You merely gave her a slight nod. What she said is something to reflect on, at the very least. Outside of the chapel however, a commotion can be heard. Its door opened, Eldwin and Elena are seen trying to hinder a group of armored men, but to no avail.

“Attention! We, Paladins of Tizo, are here to apprehend the false saint Anastasia under the suspicion of rebellion against the Empire!”

As the first chapter of your life ends, the second starts just as abruptly as the first one had been. The kind priestess who helped save the town of Jorvass is accused of treason against the Empire she defended. What could [DESTINY] have in store for you with this revelation?

[End Thread 1]

What are your thoughts on the quest so far? When we reach the capital of the Empire later in thread 2, i will drop a shitload of lore about this setting's deities and magic. Tldr, text wall incoming

Goddammit. Hopefully we can find some proof about the former lord's attempted defection in his mansion.

Quest is interesting, looking forward to the lore.
Is Tizo just the name of these paladin's order or the name of the god they follow?

>“apprehend the false saint Anastasia”
This seems incredibly suspicious, given that she was only so christened a few hours earlier this same night.

Welp it looks like we have more people to kill. Can we keep the skull of the lich and loot his body?
>pic related

Can we also take the stone spear?

Tizo is this setting's god of justice/ law/ order. Will be explained more thoroughly.

Yep, talking head strapped to your waist is definitely in my bucket list. As for the body looting, we'll see. For the second question, imagine a titanite demon the size of the mansion. So, no.

Can we lay claim to it for money? Maybe the Smith can make us a full set of demon titanium armor.

Looking forward to it!
