Last time on Worm Quest: Young Barnaby Campbell triggered as a Changer in a Victorian version of the Wormverse. You were crashing a rich cannibal group's murder party when we left off, and had just snuck up behind a bloke dressed like a Centurion.

I have a Discord, it is for answering questions and telling you guys when I'm running: https://discord.gg/uWAmQGn

The costumed man in front of you is about six foot, the same height as Barnaby, and he's wearing strange armour with a red crest on the top. The helmet is metal, with a design on the faceplate that reminds you of the statues you saw in a museum once. You drag him away from the door into the main hall and pull him into a small side room, your knife pressed against a gap under his arms.

He's oddly compliant, and doesn't resist as you pull him away from the ongoing festivities. He speaks first once you enter the room, despite his precarious position.

"Ave, child of Nemesis. "
A Madman. He will be unnaturally resilient to most methods of fear mongering, but call his delusions into the light and he will crumble.

What the fuck are you on about?

"It is good to see that-"

"No, shut up I'm talking. What the fuck are you on about eh?"

He seems a bit put out when you interrupt him but he lets out a small laugh, and says something in a language you don't quite understand. A knee in the side brings him back to lucidity, and he starts babbling quickly. At least it's in English this time.

"A monster born of hate, who seeks to dominate all around him. What good is your anger without purpose? You're a fine instrument of revenge, and there will be great things done tonight. But what will your future hold?"

"Speak clearly damn it! You're babbling."

You give him another shake, then slam him up against the wall. He's heavy, but still doesn't resist.

"I am Mars, God of War. I came here to punish the profligates, the same as you. I would prefer that you let me go now, it will be difficult for you to prosecute your righteous fury with an arm otherwise occupied."

Ah, he's a nutter. You should have seen that coming.

He might be useful, let him down.
No, if he's gifted then he'd be too dangerous. Gut him.
No, you have more questions. (What?)

You can hear the revelry of the rich and decadent in the background, it grates on you.

I got a question my man. We don't know what kind of bloke Barnaby was growing up but his attitude towards Jack's ultraviolence is weird to me. It takes a certain kind of monster to see and experience what Jack does and then not even say a word about it.

Is it shard corruption or was Little B always a murderous psychopath under the surface?

The two of you stare at each other for a few seconds, masks of metal and cloth meeting in a darkened room. He has blue eyes too.

In the end, Jack drops him to the floor. He seems no worse for wear, and pulls out a large straight blade once he stands back up. You take a step backwards and raise your own knife, but he takes a step back himself and tilts his head apologetically. There's only a few seconds before you open the door and head back into the hallway, Mars following closely behind.

"So why are you even here anyway? How'd you find out about this?"

"I was invited by one of the men we will find inside, he thinks me a fellow deviant."

"Ah alright, you some kind of toff too then?"

"I am a God, I am beyond this filth. But my... other mask... serves me well, and allows me to mingle with the higher echelons of your society. Please do not be intimidated by my status, we are cut of similar cloth you and I."

What a lad.

The two of you are standing outside the ballroom now, staring at the degeneracy within and plainly disgusted. There's a good forty or so of the noble men and women within, many in some state of undress. You can also count maybe a dozen servants, footmen and maids within as well, although that number is slowly dwindling.

"So, what can you do eh? I'm damn good with a knife, but I might have some difficulty with that many."

"If you allow me some time, I can have them tearing each other apart. I will need your help however."

"We're treating this as a Ripper attack, he used a similar knife and there were similar injuries from the whorehouse attack."

He went to the Cellar and prepared firebombs, the fires killed a few but the fear was worse. They panicked, and were slow to react.
They just started tearing each other to bits, we suspect that he may have more dangerous powers at his disposal than previously established.
He came in through the main door and started hacking, evidence suggests he had taken a second knife from somewhere.
He barricaded the other door shut from the hallway, that only left the windows as an escape route.
Maybe he did something different though, we're still investigating the scene.
>>
>>2638183

"Another one, Officer Wallis? Not this soon?"

"Yes Sir, and it's so much worse this time. It's the Ripper again, he has the same methods."

"Walk me through it Colin."

"He barricaded the back door shut first sir, that was one of the first things we noticed. Seems he likes to be thorough. He used an oak cabinet from the hallway to hold it closed as he did his work. He didn't barricade the other door, but we believe that's how he entered the room."

"And the bodies outside the north entrance?"

We believe they exited at some point either before or after he closed the doors.

A young couple leave through the front entrance, giggling as they make their way towards the servants' quarters. The gentleman stops a few steps down the hallway, embracing the young lady and pushing her towards a wall. The gentleman wasn't expecting for his companion to tear his throat out with her teeth. She looks around, eyes frenzied and hateful. In the end, with nothing else to focus her rage on she turns upon herself. It's brutal, and there's little left by the time she dies. It's hard to mutilate yourself, but anger can do incredible things to a person.

The Ripper returns after a few minutes, and now it's time to finish off the rest.

It's been a hell of a night, a hell of a night indeed. Mr Henrickson was sure that this was the best party thrown all year, all of the others had been too scared, too damn afraid of the possible ramifications. To hell with the police, they were never the authority here. Sure, others had done similar things, Henrickson knew he was never the most inventive of men. It was the sheer quantity that shocked and amazed. No more was the gathering restricted to a few men or women in hushed offices, This was a party.

Of course, there were a few worries. The food falling through had been a right bastard, but the butcher's boy was helpful and handsome too. He'd have to remember to ask the cooks what his name was, or try anyway. He didn't expect to remember any of this in the morning. None of them really did.

Then there was the other problem, some of the guests appear to have disappeared. Most likely just gone to have some fun upstairs.
The party continued for some time, but eventually Henrickson had to go and take a piss.

He steps outside, and looks to his sides. Then he screams.

The bodies are stacked to the left and right, there's So many of them. Just out of sight of the doorway.

Unfortunately, he manages to scream before his death. They pull him away as fast as they can, but people are already looking, and gasps echo out as the crowd spots the two men stabbing their host.

"This body was thrown aside, while the others were neatly stacked. We believe that this is when The Ripper was noticed by the crowd.

"What, you expect me to believe he was just stood outside the door? Stabbing people as they came through and throwing them to the side? That's ridiculous, maybe one or two sure but fifteen goddamn people."

"Yes. Sir."

Jack throws the old man to the side before stepping forwards into the room, turning to look back at Mars as he does so.
"You stay here, don't let anyone leave."

He stops for a second, before nodding and standing in the doorway.
"It would be rude to interfere in your Divine work, son of Nemesis. I will make sure you are not interrupted."

"Cheers"

And then your bloody work begins.

[MARS OPINION:^^^ Mortal Hero]

You hack and slash at the screaming crowd, a few men step forwards but it's not enough, it's never enough. Nothing can stop you now. They're scared degenerate fools, grown careless on drugs and drink. Content to laugh as others die. You can see the footmen running, taking off while they still can and you laugh.
"You sorry bastards! Eating human meat and revelling in your evil. I'm here to PUNISH YOU!"

You walk a Circuit along the room, tearing to pieces any man or woman that comes close enough, or cannot escape your reach in time. A few make a run for the door, but they're stopped by the crimson centurion. Any that gets closer than a few feet start to froth at the mouth and tear at the others madly, there's no way out.

One makes a run for the windows, but your cleaver lands itself in his shoulderblades before he can smash the window.

There is no way out.

Now they're huddled in the centre of the room, messy, drunk and scantily clad as they shrink back from your judgement.

There is no way out

"That's how we found the rest sir, scattered about the centre of the room. Believe me when I say you don't want to go in there."

Of course, Arcane enters anyway and Colin is left standing outside. He can't go back in, not after what he saw.

The magician staggers out, skin a sickly green as he frantically tries to make sense of the slaughter.

"A-And, that was all him?"

Colin waits before he gives the answer, he really could empathise. But his shoes were brand new.
"No Sir, we believe that the dogs and the... maid occurred before his arrival. This appears to have been that kind of party. We also found dead men ... in the kitchen.
Arcane does vomit at that, nearly falling into the puddle afterwards as well. It's only Officer Wallis' steady hand on his shoulder that stops him from swooning into a most unpleasant state.

"Tell me there's some clue Colin, something you can use to find him."

"No sir, not a damn trace. There's no way of telling what blood belongs to who, and there's so much ripped fabric and hair that it'd be like finding a needle in a pile of other, identical needles.
Colin's eye's met the wizard's for a second, the two young men sharing a mutual understanding.

"We need a Thinker."

"They won't send one, not out here."

"Then hire the Sage, I'm sure she can give us something at least. This bastard just killed forty people at once, with a bloody knife. I can't solve this without any GODDAMN LEADS!"

So far almost everyone seems to be an expy or just a character mentioned in passing. Besides while we can speculate about the expy aspect, there's not much to discuss beyond that at the moment from just a name other than that they apparently a thinker for hire.

Honestly if gender hadn't been specified I would have just assumed this was the alt universe version of Teacher.

Nemesis sounds like it could be our shard's name.
>>
>>2638610
Nemesis was actually a greek goddesses name, who also happened to be the goddess of retribution, specifically those who defied the Gods. This Mars character is probably a rich person with easy access to a decent education, and is also mentally unstable. He also idolizes us as the apparent Avatar of Nemesis. I say we exploit this as much as possible, and try and drain this poor fool for as much money and equipment as possible before pinning our crimes on him.

Speaking of acquiring equipment.

Barnaby's workplace is not the most affluent, but butchers have historically worn chainmail gloves and even chainmail aprons to prevent injury at work. You can still purchase them today because there is no reason to stop using something that works. Personal protection is important and we are eventually going to fight against people who are capable of hurting us.
>>
>>2638662
I mean, we're not that powerful. We're basically a above average human, who can sense weakness or something, and all the people we attacked weren't expecting it. In a straight up fight with say a normal with a gun would actually be pretty dangerous for us. Like, we're not gonna be able to go toe to toe with most Gifted, even if we have the element of surprise.
>>
>>2638672
Yeah isn't that an argument in my favor? Anyone not addled out of their mind with a blade or a gun can fuck us up. Every time you slash or thrust with a knife you're in danger of retaliation and one good nick on our hands can be enough to make us lose the fight.
>>
>>2638683
Oh I was just saying
>we are eventually going to fight against people who are capable of hurting us.
We've been fighting people who are more than capable of hurting us, but I do agree, some equipment upgrades are very important.
>>
>>2638683
>>2638693
If we are to get some defensive equipment it should be something like studded leather or something similar so it doesn't hamper our stealth, which i think is our strong suit.
>>
>>2638702
I own chainmail. Oil it and it barely makes a sound, and especially not if you're moving carefully. It will only make sound if it's ill fitting. You tie it with a cord or belt to stop it from moving independently of your body. An apron is far from the best idea but a shirt that's tailor made is perfect.

Either way I'm happy as long as we armor up
>>
>>2638721
would it be possible to weave chainmail into our coat? On the outside its a normal coat, but with a chainmail lining. Or would that just be very restrictive?
>>
>>2638727
Yeah definitely. Sew the mail to the coat and then quilt an inner layer of cloth to it. The chain will be taut and the quilt will make extra sure it won't make any noise plus it prevents any jingle jangle that would occur if it scrapes against belt buckles or weapons.
>>
>>2638495
Can we steal a new jacket or something on our way out
>>
>>2638775
We might be able to make a gambeson or get a pretty thick leather jacket in the meantime
>>
No Colin, you have to reign in your anger. Anger cannot help you here, you'll just make mistakes. He lowers his voice, and clears his throat before continuing.
"You know I don't have the authority to order something like that Arcane, it has to be you. You're the protectorate division leader, they'll listen to you. I'm just some nobody Sergeant."

"I- I'm not sure I can, there's strict rules regarding mercenaries."

"Arcane, so far all I can do is tell you what happened at the scene, if we want to catch this maniac, then I need something more than what we're getting. This is twice in a row, he's already the worst mass murderer ever to hit Brockton. There's enough blood here for ten regular murderers."

The wizard's eyes pick up at that, and his head snaps up to look at the police officer above.

"What if we're going about this wrong Colin?"

"What do you mean?"

"We keep assuming this is one man, what if we're dealing with a group?"

"Shit.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

"Well that went well, what do you think buddy?"

Mars is silent, and has been for quite some time after you left the mansion. Despite Jack's best attempts to get him talking.
Then again "Hey, you want to see my knife collection" or "So what's your favourite kind of meat" are not the best conversation starters with a man who's convinced that he's a god. It's kind of difficult to speak with him.

"So, I have been thinking."

Fuck me, he does have a voice.

"What you did there, it was magnificent. And I respect your dedication and strength. But I must say, I feel you're going about this the wrong way."

"Oh, really?"

"Yes, I've been giving it some thought and I've come to the conclusion that should you continue in this way, you'll be labelled too dangerous to live, despite targeting undesirables."

"I'm not stopping if that's what you want."

"Good lord no, I'm just saying that it may be useful to be a bit more subtle in future. If we had let one of those men live, we could have followed them back to their compatriots."

"Then killed the compatriots, I see where you're going with this."

"Perhaps you do, I'd suggest some more, quiet work in future."

"Do you have anything in mind?"

"Not at the moment, but I will drop off a message in the Times, look for a correspondence entitled "To the short, but very polite gentleman." I shall message you once I have some more work, you can read can't you?"

"Of course, fucking of course. I'm not stupid."

Eventually the two of you part ways, Mars disappearing into a strategically parked carriage with a masked driver. You simply duck into a side alley and transform once he's gone, Barnaby returning.

Yeah, you're used to working in a butcher's but what Jack did was bad in a way you can't even begin to describe. When you were transformed there was nothing, you weren't fine with it per se. It was just that you had no access to the body's responses to things like that, it was like you were disgusted on a moral and intellectual level but couldn't access the physical component. Now of course, the memory of what Jack has done hits you like a truck. You force the bile back and slowly stagger back towards the shop, formulating excuses for the time and trying desperately to avoid thinking about the most horrifying part of today's events.

You don't even feel bad for killing them, there's some kind of weird disconnect. Like watching a dream. You suppose it helps that it's someone else actually doing it.

You arrive back at the shop rather late, almost six in the afternoon. Dan's a bit sceptical but there's no drink on your breath, and your clothes are no bloodier than usual so in the end he accepts that the people in charge of the kitchen kept you a bit late. "Sorry, I had a worker before you who'd take any opportunity to slack off. Checking's become a habit." He seems pretty happy with the day's haul though, and sends you home with an extra day's worth of pay for your trouble.

It jingles in your pocket with what you took from the party. It's weird how little money the toffs were carrying, but you suppose that people that rich might not actually have to carry money. You've never actually seen a rich person pay for anything after all, they've always either paid in advance or sent a servant to pay for them.

You change back into your regular clothes, and head back towards your district.

It takes you a good hour or so to find what you need, the shop is located deep in the serpentine back alleys and far away from the main road into the Market square. Andrew's butchery and fishmonger's supply is a small shop, more like a depot to be honest, there's not really a shop floor or anything either. From what you can see, there's just a small desk in front of a door into the back.

Unfortunately no one is inside, it being far too late in the day. So you're left to head home, maybe you can catch it tomorrow or the Sunday. In the end you head home, arriving at maybe seven in the afternoon. It's not that late but your night was tiring so conversation at dinner is limited to the bare essentials, yes you do have enough for bills tomorrow, no you didn't get in any trouble, yes you're being careful not to hurt yourself in the butcher's shop.

You collapse into your bed not long after, having completely forgotten your promise to Michael regarding your powers.

You are in the same room as before, the symmetrical office once more appearing before you. Jack is sat across from you as usual, his posture much more relaxed than yours as idly plays with a meat cleaver. The table in front of you is fully white now, the black marble having disappeared completely from it.

You also notice that while Jack's side of the room retains it's unique charm, it does appear to be much cleaner. Barring Jack himself, who is covered in blood.

Alright Barn? I thought we should talk.

About what?

I dunno, you're the one with all the bloody questions. I just stab people. I thought It might be good to get some thought in though, I've got to admit this is still all a bit weird to me.

I'm pretty sure Buffalo soldier was mentioned to be a male. Mastery could also be a trump version of Uber if it's someone local, or given capes from outside brockton bay are an option it could easily be a weaker version of Teacher.

In any case trying to form a team with a roman inspiration could certainly be an interesting angle to go with if we really want to hitch ourselves to Mars/Gallant. Lares could work for Kaiser on that note given this version of Kaiser makes constructs using uniforms or clothes and the Lares were a collection of minor guardian deities, Vulcan could also feasibly fit as could something like Talos if we are fine with dipping into the greek myths.
>>
>>2641894
Lets keep Mars at arms length. He's a useful guy to have around, but thats it. I'm curious if we could somehow get him to attack the protectorate, in case they start to get too close to finding out who we are. Also, would his psycho ray stuff work on us? Considering we're two people, and one of us is already pretty psychotic.

You look across at Jack as he sits back on his chair, the killer's vulpine grin unwavering as he crosses and uncrosses his legs on the chair. He looks rather comfortable, but you give your next words some thought anyway. You don't know whether the two of you can interact here, but you'd rather not say something that might facilitate a sudden, unpleasant discovery. It takes you a while, but eventually you happen upon a good way of asking your next question.

"So do we have a plan? I really wasn't expecting this. So far all I can think about doing is surviving and paying the rent. You've been awesome for that Jack-"

"Thanks."

"Uh... no problem. As I was saying, you've been awesome but we should really be a bit less murderous. If we keep going like this we'll get caught. We need to make a plan, and find a way to make money that doesn't run the risk of us getting the chair."

He's quiet for a moment, face scrunched up in worried thought. It's a surprisingly human expression and it shocks you for a second how normal he looks. Part of you is thankful that you went with a full mask, nobody would take you seriously if they could see your face.

Except you know... if they knew about all those people you killed. They'd probably take you seriously then.

It takes him a few seconds to get himself in order and meet your eyes again.

"I guess I could be a bit more clever about how I go about things."

Well that's a start.

"I still think mugging folks would go a long way, it'd be safer than what we've done so far and there'd be plenty of money, depending on where we go."

"Do you not have a plan? Something you want to do?"

He stares deeply into your eyes, and for just a second you catch a glimpse of something terrible. A quick flash of emotion and intent that you can't really identify, but it burns brightly for just a second and you can feel your heart quicken as the feeling recedes.

"I want to be on top, I want to win and revel in it. I want to look someone, anyone in the eye, and know that they're terrified of me."

I don't want to be scared any more.

Jack recoils as that last part echoes throughout the room, seeming to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. His face turns red as he stands and howls in rage, a knife appearing in his hand almost instantly.

The room fades, and the last thing you see is his eyes lock onto you.

"What did you do!?"

[JACK:TERRIFIED]

You awaken to another rainy day, the sounds of daily life returning as you try to get back in contact with your mental passenger.

Jack? you there?

He's silent but you can still feel him back there, his emotions swirling and roiling. Maybe you should leave him be for a while.

He nods and answers in the affirmative while you split the cash. You've been hiding it under a loose floorboard, in a small box. It's not the best security, but it's sure better than nothing.

"Thanks Barnaby, I was a bit worried there. Those coppers said that they'd ' ave the stuff on Dad's body back by now."

"Yeah, well I've got this. You just focus on looking after mum."

The lady herself arrives a few minutes later and you spend a short time talking with the two of them about small things, lamenting the weather and trading tips for piecework. In the end all good things must come to a close however, and you find yourself once more headed down to work. There's fewer people out on the streets today, most likely because of the rain, and the few that are out make quick time going to wherever. One thing you do notice is a marked increase in Ironclad gang members on the streets, red silk shirts worn over gleaming steel breastplates. They appear to have taken the territory properly now, the previous gang in charge either being destroyed or folded into the main group. They're relatively polite at least, Boilerplate is known to refuse ill mannered applicants to his gang.

You walk on past, neither bothering nor being bothered by the gangsters. Eventually you arrive at the butchery, and settle down for a hard day's work.

The day passes quickly, there are less customers than most days it being the end of the week but there's enough that you're kept busy cutting and filleting for the better part of the day. Jack still isn't answering any messages so you're left on your own while you work, thinking about what exactly you'll do from here on out. You've enough money for an extra week now, but at the cost of your reputation with the police. You've seen the papers and what they're saying about you, the Ripper is being hunted, if you keep killing like you do then eventually the police will catch up to you.

They'll kill you if you're caught.

The thought is a sobering one, but it's a truth that you have to confront. Somehow you have to find a use for your powers that isn't just common thievery. It is with that thought that you leave work, wandering the streets two dollars richer than before. Mr Anderson will want paying today, but you've been let out early due to how slow it is so you've plenty of time.

We can hear people's darkest secrets, surely there's a therapeutic application to this? We could try to find work as a therapist assistant or something.

Alternative two is getting a shoe in with one of the local crime lords/blessed. Win their trust and we can be fucking made by vetting their henchmen and rooting out malcontents.

Or hell, go to the protectorate or police and get a job as a criminal examiner. They don't need to know about Jack.

>We can pay off the next two weeks at minimum.

But should probably ask if the butcher can pitch in on us getting chainmail gloves. He'd pay less then he'd normally have to effectively have a pair for his apprentice. We'd have hand armor.

Just say since dad died, our family is a lot more reliant on us not losing our fingers.

After some thought and a pie, you decide that locating some hand protection should take priority over daydreaming uses for your Gift. It's a tough decision but you have a week to think of alternative money sources, so before long your wandering brings you to Andrew's butchery supplies. It's actually open now, it being early in the afternoon. You enter, the bell on the door ringing as you step in front of the small counter that acts as the only furnishing in the room.

After a few seconds, an overweight and elderly gentleman comes through. He has ruddy cheeks and a large red nose, his mouth raising into a smile as he sees you enter. "Ah, and who do we have here? You're not one of my regulars."

He did terrible things in the war, and saw worse. Blood and gore that's what'll break him, but you will need a lot.

"No sir, my name's Barnaby. I work for Daniel who runs the butchers between North and Elm street."

"Yes, I know Daniel. You'd be That Barnaby then, he says you're a good lad. Are you on an errand then, I assume he wants something made?"

"No sir. I got a few spare dollars and thought I'd grab some gloves, the proper metal chain ones. My father passed a while back, so now I've got to look after the family."

"And you want to take care of your hands, no problem lad, no problem at all. I'll see if I have any fitted for you."

It takes a few minutes of rummaging in the back, but eventually he returns with a few sets of gloves. He has a few made of incredibly thick treated leather, so tough that they're almost stab proof. Then there's the chain ones. They're made of regular leather gloves, with dozens of small interlinked metal rings sewn on around the outside, enough so that it's completely covered. They come in two variants, short ones that go up to the wrist and longer ones that go up to the elbow.

"Now, The longer ones are probably a bit out of your price range, but it's all good quality. What do you think?"

leather will do, let's keep as much money as possible. (-2 dollars.)
Short chain ought to be good, it's a good compromise between cost and protection. (-5 dollars)
Grab the long gloves, better to cover as much as possible. (-10 dollars)
>>
>>2646402
If we get some simple repair tools (things to bend metal ), repairing our chainmail should be ez pz. Just would have to buy a nice supply of chainmail rings so we can make repairs to some used chainmail. Damage to already ratty damaged mail should be hard to tell, is cheaper, and provides most of the protection we want.

Imagine the team if we brought all Barnabys together. Something interesting to note is that while Jack Napier Barnaby is certainly physically the weakest Barnaby, he's by far the most socially dangerous one. I wonder what would happen if Jack Napier Barnaby talked to Jack Slash.
>Or am I just imagining a pattern where none exists?
The QM did give subtle hints to Manic Barnaby back in the first season, so I wouldn't put it out of the question he planned each version to embody certain aspects once we got more. Alternatively he's going to steal this idea and retcon it.

I think we've overlooked a very very lucrative form of money making. Blackmail. We can either see things that people never want to be revealed. Or see a way to find them. A meeting a month in a random alley with a terrifying hooded figure is pretty low risk once we get it going.

Shiiiiiit shit shit shit.

Jack's not our shard power!? We got the power to read people, and we're reading Jack, only he can hear it too coz he's in our head!
>>
>>2648141
Jack is a personality created by our shard, so it can talk with us. Also i guess our shard was bullied by the entities.
>>
>>2648145
I think our shard is also a part of the Entity Void Barnaby's shard is from.
>>
>>2648145
Actually, I think it's more of a reflection of Barnaby's fears. He doesn't want to be afraid.
>>
>>2648596
So Jack is clearly a split personality right? The form is to make it easier to fight physically, while our other power is to fight mentally. The reason Jack is surprised about the other power is that subconsciously we think he's not us and tied to the body shift. The reality is that our power is to make us feel safe, so we get bigger than dad and nothing they say can hurt us. The trauma of the event caused a split.
>>
>>2650394
Power to know how to use absolutely anything as an effective weapon.
>Skill Thinker
>Has powers that enhance their abilities to perform, learn, or execute techniques.
>Involves helplessness or questions of competence, often in scenarios where the person is out of their depth.
We didn't have power over our dad. We weren't strong enough to overcome him, but that didn't result in a Brute trigger. It resulted in a Thinker trigger because we weren't strong enough alone. We needed something else - anything else - to stop him. But stop and think, and you realize we're in a house filled with things. Anything can be lethal in the right hands, and your hands are those right hands now.

Power to get weaknesses out of anyone.
>Social Thinker
>Can manipulate, study, or control others, but do so purely through the right information or skills.
>Involves isolation, betrayal, or similar, but with a focus on emotions. (Guilt, shame, self-loathing, etc.)
>Trigger events usually produce Thinkers when the parahuman experiences large amounts of emotional and mental strain while a crisis point is reached in a short period of time. This contrasts with Tinkers, where issues remain unresolved over a large amount of time before they culminate in a crisis moment. Crushing revelations, moments of mental or emotional anguish, great fear, anger, and self-loathing are frequent causes of Thinker triggers.
He was going to hurt our brother. So strong, so fearless, so unrattled by anything at all. Completely invincible, or so it seemed. Everybody is human. Everybody has a weakness somewhere in their past, or one they constantly have. Words are a lethal weapon too.

>Changers all alter their physical form in some way.
>Changers arise from mental and emotional issues involving identity or body image, or from conflicts involving constraining social expectations.
We're not strong enough alone to take on Dad. We're not enough ourselves to take him on. We need someone else to help us. Someone stronger. Someone more brutal. Someone more like our father than we are.

The powers all make sense with the triggers, but Zion/VOID doesn't write much relevant to the triggers in the moments, he gets straight to the powers happening. Would be a good improvement if he did more of subtly describing the actual trigger reasons in the moments when Barnaby gets the powers, but eh.
>>
>>2650862
Woo! Discussion! Not enough in threads lately (or at least the ones I follow apparently). That all makes sense but it doesn't add up to why Jack seems unaware of the other side of our powers. Think we could have triggered twice?
>>
>>2650871
Doubt it. I think he's a manifestation of that other side of us, given form and power by the shard, but created by ourselves. He knows as much about our powers as we do, but he doesn't know about the actual shard and its role in all this. In this way, we're kinda like Tristan/Byron from Ward (Worm's sequel), a case 70.

Basically, twins that trigger at the same time while touching each other end up going fully permanent fusion dance a la Dragonball, and can switch between physical manifestation at will. The shard completely switches out one twin for the other complete with all the clothes and items they had on them beforehand, and the one twin that isn't in control ends up watching everything the other twin sees as if on a TV screen from a room in a mindspace. Pretty interesting stuff, but this doesn't exactly apply to Barnaby here, though the "shared mental room during sleep with a divided symbolic theme" is from another character in Ward too.
>>
>>2650883
Ah see I've never read Ward so that's news to me. Cool concept though. It just strikes me as incredibly bizarre how completely unaware he was of that part of our powers.
>>
>>2647903
SUPPORT THE SHORT
>>
>>2651178
I don't know how many of you guys have seen or read Fight Club, but mental illness, self loathing, fear and despair play a major part in basically every aspect of the narrative. To Barnaby, Jack is basically his version of an ideal self. Strong, confident, assertive, and competent. He's able to get done what Barnaby thinks that he couldn't on his own. However, it seems that Barnaby also associated strength with his father, who was a very cruel, self centered, and unrepentant man, at least on the surface. So Barnaby views his own strength and weakness through this fractured lens.

What I think is happening to Jack is basically if you try to make a flawed concept manifest, like a tulpa. While we're disgusted with power, we also admire it. Jack is just dealing with the effects of supposedly being a fearless unstoppable badass, who isn't so fearless or unstoppable.
>>
>>2651838
I wonder how much of this theorycrafting/deep thinking was planned by Zion and how much he's just going to steal.
>>
>>2653670
I think subtly incorporating stuff that readers/voters post/theory about, or using that as fodder to improve the quest and your own writing/quest skills is hallmark of a good QM. Another one is engaging with the voters/posters with Q&A or asking stuff, etc.
>>
>>2653761
Oh I agree, I'd just find it really funny it Zion put literally no thought into the trigger event and is retroactively applying anons' ideas.

"I'll take the short gloves please, I've got to admit I'm looking forwards to less cuts after this."

He nods and smiles, pulling the other glove pairs off of the counter as you rummage around in your coat's deep pockets. Five dollars is a lot of money in small change, but luckily most of the cash from the toffs was in silver dollars so it's easy enough to count out. You use some small change anyway though, best not to risk it.

"Cheers lad, and the best of luck to you. Give Dan my regards will you? I don't get to see him much these days."

"Of course, I'll say hello the next time I see him."

You take your new mail gloves and leave the store, five dollars down but happier and more content in your own safety. Truth be told you probably should have bought a good pair of gloves before now, you do work with knives all day after all. These however, have a better purpose.

Does the Gentleman´s Agreement looks badly on using guns? Are there any deviations from the unwritten rules of Worm?
>>
>>2653915
I mean guns can be used to cripple someone. So long we don't shoot to kill i think it's fine.
>>
>>2653924
In Worm, even the act of carrying a gun, except in very few circumstances, counts as breaking the rules. Think of it as a barbed bayonet or a flamethrower. Those that carry them don´t get the luxury of being made prisioners.

Carrying a gun simbolizes tha the gloves are off, and I assure you the gloves are there for a good reason. It won´t autmatically make us public enemy number one, but people will be more prone to being vicious to us, public opinon goes down and we will be ostracized from cape society. Using it will be even worse.
>>
>>2653927
A gun is no go, but a crossbow is?What about a harpoon gun?
>>
I would like to apologise, I got distracted for a while, but I'm back now.

>>2653915
The Gentleman's Agreement only actually states that a Gifted's mask and normal life are kept separate, and only punishes those who deliberately unmask a Gifted or attack them out of costume. Apart from that it's pretty much open season.
Buffalo Soldier for example, has been known to use rifles, shotguns and pistols. Even Arcane carries a small revolver, in case he runs into a power null-iffier or Inventor that can turn off his Gift.

Deaths are very common in cape fights in this universe, for both regular people and Gifted alike.

You walk through the dim back alleys back towards the main market square , dodging a few red shirted gangsters on the way to your other visit. The Baron's arms is back on the other side of the market, so it takes you a few minutes to cross the plaza. On your way there you notice several more of the gangsters, and red cloth wrapped around the gas lamps in the area. It seems like something's riled up the Ironclads, now they're pushing their territory out.

You stop in a crowded street and pick up a newspaper on your way, making sure to read it in a public place. You were going to check the correspondences, but it is the headline that catches your attention.
"Brutal Murderer Strikes in Park Road, Protectorate Baffled."

Ah, yes. You suppose that they would find out sooner or later. You skim the article and it's clearly referring to your work yesterday. All about the rich nobles you killed. No mention of the rabid dogs, human flesh or traumatised servants though. You kind of expected that to be honest, but you're still disappointed. Ah well, rich folk just get away with stuff you guess.

The correspondences are amusing to read but irrelevant once you realise that none of them pertain to you, and you ditch the paper once it becomes clear that there's naught else that's useful. Although Jackanapes' top ten jokes are pretty good, you'll have to remember the one about the two madmen.

Once you actually get to the shop, Jack seems to stir in his silent mood. He's still silent, but you can tell that he's trying to contain his almost childlike glee.

You're looking for a pistol, there's plenty around.
A rifle might be handy.
Perhaps a new knife might cheer Jack up.
Shotguns, that is all.
Just sort of browse, there's a hell of a selection

That's weird since the only place we attacked was the rich people and the triad. But then again if the said safest place in town got a visit from this murderer what could be said about the less defended/watched places.
>>
>>2654288
Retaliation referring to the Triad safehouse. We casually murdered nearly everyone in there which is a big no no currently. Triads probably got pissed and attacked the redshirts who are now spreading out in retaliation. Thats my theory at least.
>>
>>2654297
But we are in the north of the town in the industrial area and the triad is in the center. They wouldn't have a reasi to attack the redshirts. If anything they would hit the other gangs in the town center.

You walk through the various shelves and aisles of the store, the smell of gun oil and metal all around you. You're mostly looking for knives, blades or other sharp things in an attempt to get Jack talking but it doesn't seem to work at first. He's stubbornly refusing to comment on anything, and seems to ignore your messages to him, that is until you have an idea.

"Yeah, this one looks good."
The small stiletto is possibly the cheapest and shittiest thing you've ever seen in here, it's only half a dollar to be fair but there's no excuse for a knife that bends that easily, or has clearly visible rust damage on.

"I'm sure that this will be just what we need to manage. It's not like there's any real difference. A knife is a knife after all."

Oh no...

"Now all I need to do is bring it to the desk, maybe I can even swing a disc-"

OKAY! I'll talk. If you're going to be that much of a prick about it.

Good to have you back.

I was just thinking alright? Just put that down and let me find us a proper one, it's clear you can't be trusted with something this important.

You let out a small smile as Jack makes excuses and grumbles as you walk back around, staring intently at all manner of blades and knives. In the end he notices a few that he might like, although he is briefly distracted by a gun..

A machete roughly the length of your forearm, the largest thing that you could reasonably conceal in your coat. -2 dollars
A kukri with a wooden handle, apparently he's always wanted one. -3 dollars
A bowie knife with a twelve inch blade, who doesn't love one of these. -3 dollars
Or maybe you want to take another look at the guns?

Yeah, that's what I was looking for, a proper knife.

You take the Bowie knife and head back out, three dollars poorer but richer in your offensive capabilities. It's getting later now, a nearby clock puts it at four in the afternoon. You'd better head home. You head back into the streets, dodging gangsters on your way.

[Bowie Knife acquired]
[Jack : at least he's talking.]

So... why did you freak out like that anyway?

He stops his rant about the finer points of Bowie knives, and goes quiet for a second. It takes him a while to answer, and for a second you assume that he's clammed back up. He does answer eventually though.

Just. Uh, I'd prefer if you didn't do that mind stuff to me. My mind is my mind, you ought to stay out.

It's not like I did it on purpose.

Shit, I thought you had to try and do your weird mind things.

Wait, you can't do it too?

Nah, I just know how to hurt people.

You're rather surprised by that realisation, and the focus on your mental conversation does unfortunately come with some drawbacks.

Your meandering approach on the way back home is very pleasant, but there are a few drawbacks to wandering absentmindedly through streets filled with gangsters. Especially when you aren't paying proper attention to where you're going.

It's on the way through a small back street that you bump into a few Ironclad street toughs. Unfortunately they're blocking the alley at it's mouth. The three of them are sitting around and smoking between you and your route out.

And unfortunately for you, one notices you before you can turn and head through another way. You're going to have to get through somehow.

Try and talk your way through, you have the advantage here.
Try and intimidate your way through.

>>
You think for a second but just as you open your mouth to respond, one of the toughs behind him double takes and cuts you off. "Oh fuck, now I recognise 'im. Oi, Andy let him be, I want to talk with the lad."

The younger gangster seems somewhat confused, but steps to the side and puts the knife away as the other one steps forwards.

He loved your mother many years ago, but she had to move away. He never forgot her, and looked everywhere for news. Now for a few days your name made the news. Not the headlines, but a few lines on the second page. He only caught it by chance, looking for the race results. He feared that he'd never see Mary again.

"Yeah, I thought I knew you from somewhere. You're Barnaby right? Killed yer dad with a gun? I saw it in the papers."
He takes a deep puff from his cigarette before continuing, almost sheepishly.

"It's a good thing I figured it anyhow, you'll be needing all the cash you can get your hands on eh?"

"Uh,Yeah, I was gonna try and leg it out of here if I couldn't get past. I've got rent to pay today, gotta take care of the others."

"Good lad, taking care of yer mum like that. You know... if you're having cash problems, we just moved into the area. Could do with some tough lads like yerself."
He's looking at the other one now, the younger lad with his shiny new bracers and red silk shirt.
"That could be you, you know? No more ratty old shite like what you're wearing now."

Ah, that's a hell of a turn.

"Come up to the old factory by the docks, I'm sure you could do with a bit more cash."

You're reeling from the revelation, who the hell is this guy? It'd sure be nicer if your power told you his damn name. He waves the other two away and out of the alley, the two of them following, somewhat reluctantly.
"See you lad, I'll hear from you whenever."

You're left alone in the alley mouth, thinking. What can you even do when you hear something like this? It's a few minutes, and in the end you decide to simply carry on. Heading back home, to your family. Eventually, you knock on Mr Holden's door, money in hand as you wait for him to answer and still shocked from earlier. Jack has been chuckling and trying to make jokes but there's an uneasiness behind it all, and he seems almost relieved when the rent collector opens the door.

"You alright there Barnaby? If you don't have the rent for this month I-"

"No! No I've got it. It's all here sir, I've managed rather well for myself."

"Good work lad, I'll take it and mark it down for this week."

He brings out a thick ledger and ticks off an entry for your apartment before putting your money into a safe somewhere in the back of his apartment. You give him a nod before heading back up the stairs. You can catch glimpses of the others as you head up to your apartment, a worried glance through a window here, a nod and a smile from an open door here. Your building seems a little brighter now, there's still an undercurrent of worry of course.

You open the door to your apartment, your mother and brother waiting in the kitchen with a hot soup ready. For just a few hours, you don't have to worry about money or the Police. Your banal chatter comes to an end about an hour after dinner, the conversation slowly winding down as you finish digesting and talking. You sit across your table from the other two, thinking heavily on your next plans and looking for other opportunities. You could blackmail others, or use Jack to mug people for their cash, but either of those could turn out extremely badly if you go after the wrong person. You could also try to get money from Mars, he'll probably be amenable to paying you to do your thing. Unfortunately it's not like you can bring those options up at the dinner table.

"Hey, mum?"

She turns away from Michael while laughing at one of his jokes. She looks at you with one of the first smiles you've seen for some time.
"Yes dear, are you alright?"

That's a hell of a question to start with.

"Yes, I was just thinking about the future though. Trying to figure out a way to get some more cash. I managed this week and I reckon I can make the next, but I'm out of ideas for money otherwise. I was hoping that maybe you two might have some advice. We'll need to be careful with our cash, maybe move into a smaller apartment."

Your family's mood seems to drop after that, the two of them leaning forwards on the table and exchanging worried glances. Mike's the first to speak up, and with the answer that you probably expected from him. "I'm okay with finding a smaller place, maybe a job too as long as it won't kill me."

"Why bother with that last part? It'd be one less mouth to feed."
It takes them a second to realise that your statement was sarcasm, but the pencil that strikes your forehead serves as a fine rebuttal, and an indication that your joke was taken in good humour.

The synchronised "Don't joke about that!" is reassuring as well.

Your mother finishes the conversation on a reassuring note.
"I'm sure that we'll manage, I can do piecework and I'm lucky enough to have you two looking after me. I'll ask around while you're at work, see if I can find anything out from the neighbourhood. I'm just happy as long as you two are okay."

The three of you continue talking your options over for an hour or so, but eventually you have to head to sleep. You remember your promise to Michael, but you can do that on Sunday when you aren't working.

And you awaken in the Dark Room once more.
Jack is sat across from you in the usual place, surrounded by mold and stagnant air as he sits across his chair. He's clean of blood now, and he even seems a bit smaller than before. He's silent for a long while, but eventually he meets your gaze and speaks.

You know, I don't get your old man. You're a good family, why do you think he was such a nasty fucker?"

Maybe something happened at work?
Maybe he was disappointed in us somehow?
Maybe he wanted something else?
He could just be evil, we both know that is a thing that happens.

The question surprises you, and for two different reasons. Firstly is that you've never known Jack to be that much of a thinker before, this is the first time that he's ever actually asked you a question after all. And secondly isn't he part of you? Wouldn't he just know anyway?
I don't see why you'd ask me that, how am I supposed to know what went on in that nutter's head?

I don't expect you to Barnaby, but I want to hear your answer anyway. Sure I 'ave all your memories, but that's just what you saw and heard. I want to know how you think. It's important to me.

The last few words are spoken with an almost reverential tone, and it's hard not to shiver when you hear them.

I don't-

I've answered plenty of your annoying questions Barn, just give me this one.

You're silent for a moment, then exhale before presenting your thoughts on the matter.
He could just be evil? We both know that some people are just born bad after all. Those bodies in the manor certainly point to that.

Were they though? I do terrible things when I get bored, or I would if we didn't have our little... arrangement. Maybe they were just bored too, maybe your old man was bored?

Maybe, but boredom's a stupid reason to kill folks.
No, good folk don't eat human flesh or kill for no reason. You saved my family, and I'll be forever grateful for that. But you are not a good person
But you don't kill people for fun do you Jack? You kill because you're scared.

You scoff at that, Jack's got a point but it's still absurd to you. Only a monster would kill for fun, even you have a good reason when you let Jack out. You suppose that you have a rather different perspective though. You're a good person, mostly.

Maybe, but that's a damn stupid reason to kill people. It'll get anyone who does it into trouble fast, and not the kind you can get out of easily.

That's bullshit, you're only concerned 'cos you're scared of getting nicked. I know you felt fuck all for those toffs.

He's almost right, there's no regret in your mind. That's somewhat strange now that you think about it actually. Maybe you should give that some more thought. Back to the point though, you clear your throat and continue to make your point.

There's plenty of folks that practise cruelty casually, but I can't contribute to that. We'll do what we have to to survive Jack, but I won't ever understand people who kill just for the fun of it and I don't want to.

[Jack:???]

He leans back in his chair at that, exhaling as his face forms back into his usual cheeky grin.

Thanks. it was a good talk

You reach forwards as the room darkens and you slip back into consciousness, you still have questions to ask. But you awaken before you can ask anything of your murderous counterpart.

It's Saturday and you have work soon, best get going unless you have other ideas?

You get up early and head into work alongside the other men from your neighborhood, there's less people on the streets this early in the morning but the city never truly sleeps. You weave down back alleys and through streets, avoiding the city's dangers as you get into your employers place. The Ironclad gang has well and truly taken this area now, gangsters stalk the streets and loiter on corners to make their presence known.

The Ironclads don't graffiti or put up signs to mark their territory, instead they wrap red handkerchiefs and scarves around lampposts throughout the places they own. It's much more pleasant, at least to look at.

The papers seem to have moved on from what you've done recently, which somewhat surprises the both of you. Jack in particular is incensed, and goes on a rant inside your head at how quickly they've moved on.

What!? Who the fuck thought a fight between two other random cunts was more important than us? I killed forty men two days ago! Hello!

Apparently Kaiser and Chessman had fought a small gang of unknown Gifted criminals yesterday, so your story was relegated to a few paragraphs on the third page. They got away, but their normal employees got nicked.

It's while reading the paper that you round the corner onto your street and stop. Your shop is fine, but there's a bunch of gangsters across the street harassing one of the shop owners. You hear glass breaking from within the small bakery two of them are standing outside.

Just head into work, this happens hundreds of times a day.
You can help

Descretion is the better part if valor. That and the fact that nobody us being killed means that whatever's going on in there can /possibly/ wait.

I do suggest we ask our boss what's going on. Considering he's a shopowner in the area he should know who's in charge of this rabble. Then we can cut this problem off at the head.

It's been four hours since you came into work and you've been putting your Gifts to work, you've already finished cutting and storing today's carcasses by when you'd usually have your first break. You return to find Dan looking over your work and whistling.

"Are you okay kid? You've really been throwing yourself into this recently."

"Yeah, I'm good. Why?"

"Just making sure, you shouldn't overwork yourself you know?" He thinks for a second before continuing.
"Why don't you head off for today? Saturdays are always slow and there's now't for you to do 'ere anyway. Give my regards to your ma as well."

"Sure, thanks Dan."

Well shit, you've got the rest of the day off.

You decide to return home after getting some lunch, and decide on a stall near Central that you know serves these really nice pies.

You're seated in a small square, sat across from the stall while you finish your pie. Most people are still in work but there's still quite the collection of people about, all sorts of folks on lunch breaks and bustling to get wherever they may be going in their sad, overworked lives. You simply sit and watch for a while, silently thanking god for your Gifts. They'll be your way out of the drudgery, so long as you're careful and clever. If you play this right, you'll find a way to live not just survive.

I could never live like that, there's no joy for me in toil. I always... Oh shit, look.

Yeah, you see it too.
There's a armour clad figure jumping from rooftop to rooftop on the other side of the park. They're too far away so you can't see their face, but you can see the package tucked under one arm. They take a run up and leap across the twenty metre or so distance across the square, maybe ten feet or so above your head.

This could be a different kind of lead.

You get up quickly, throwing the remaining half of your pie into a nearby trashcan as you turn and follow the leaping figure. Jack advises you as you sprint down the street, one eye on the Gifted you're chasing. You don't think he's noticed you yet but he's still fast, far faster than any normal man. You follow him towards the industrial district, using all of the shortcuts and back alleys that you know to keep up with the unknown Gifted.

Unfortunately you lose him along the seafront, the last you see of him is when he heads down to ground level and turns a corner, it takes you a minute or two to get to where he was and by the time you arrive he's gone.

This whole area is riddled with warehouses and canneries, but he can't have gone far. Come to think of it, wasn't this about where-

DUCK

The kick goes through where your head was a second before and shatters a colossal chunk of the concrete wall you had been leaning against. You push forwards and body check your assailant out of the way, using your weight to push him away from you and into a nearby wall. He punches you in the side of the head and pushes you off of him, but you finally get a good look at your assailant.

He's slight and a bit shorter than you as well, with a red shirt and golden mask complemented by a long black cape and very nice shoes.

"What the 'ell do you think you're doing? No one catches me, you hear!"

Come on, let me out. I want some fun.
