You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!

Currently, you were waiting to see if Nino's operation would be successful or not, but since the healing would be taking place in the Cathedral, you weren't allowed to actually be inside with her. Even though you had nothing but the utmost trust for Naru and Solana, you still couldn't shake that nagging feeling of worry.

Not to mention, there was a mysterious Mage Knight that had been tailing you through the city, and Morgan had split up in an attempt to follow him.

Right now, you were at the Guild center, for old time's sake. As always, it was busy and bustling, the demand for adventurers remaining strong in these uncertain times. The clerk had told you that there was somebody looking specifically for you, so you head to the public tavern area where adventurers tended to hang out.

And immediately, you catch sight of a long, curved, sheathed sword and elegant, long black hair. For a brief moment you had thought it was Niko standing before you, but you immediately start seeing the subtle differences. The hair was a bit too long, and she had a harder, more regal look to her. But she was certainly from the Orient. Another hunter sent to search for Nino?

You decide to see who exactly this stranger was. You stride forward into the tavern, your appearance drawing stares and hushed whispers. The rumors and stories about your exploits had already traveled fast and far. However, you didn't mind this. The change in atmosphere, though, seemed to alert the stranger and she turns and locks eyes with you.

"The Ashwalker, I presume." She says. Like Nino, she had managed to speak with little of her native accent, though you could detect hints of it in her speech. "I presume Niko is still one of your companions?"

You pause. What exactly was she aiming at here?

I'm here to see my sister." The stranger continues, still keeping her intense stare on you.

You simply nod. Niko was still one of your companions.

"Really?" The stranger's eyes widen as she takes a step forward and hesitates. "My apologies, my name is Misono, I am Niko's older sister."

Older sister? So that meant she was a princess like Niko. Did she mean to take Niko back?

You give another cautious glare at the young Oriental warrior.

"I am aware that you have bested some of our finest warriors in single combat, and I am not here to fight." Misono's hands ball into fists. "I just want to at least see my little sister again."

You just nod slightly. You suppose that you can let it happen, under your supervision, of course.

"Thank you." Misono bows her head to you. "I am in your debt, Ashwalker."

And now you were REALLY starting to attract some stares. You doubt that any of the adventurers here knew Misono's true status, but the sight of someone bowing to you was still a bit... odd.

"I assume you are based in the Monastery on the outskirts of the city." She continues. She certainly did her research.

You nod in confirmation.

"Then I shall arrive tomorrow. Please let your people know."

You nod again and Misono gives a slight head bow as she heads out of the Guild hall.

You get the nagging feeling that events were starting to converge on this one city. Some people would argue that these events were converging on you in particular, silly as that sounded.

You decide to head for the market to find a blacksmith that would be willing to work on the dragon materials you had gathered from your previous quest. They were certainly high grade materials, and couldn't be left to go to waste in the Monastery's storeroom.

Right now, you had plenty of dragon scale and bone. You were interested in crafting some sort of...

You decide the materials would make for a good set of armor. You head into the main market and enter one of the larger blacksmithing shops.

"Ah, welcome!" The blacksmith, a dwarf, waddles forward happily. "What can I help ya with?"

You look at him curiously. He wasn't wary of a Tempar?

"Ah, don't give me that look!" The blacksmith laughs. "Paladin, Templar, or random adventurer, every customer is different! The only thing you all have in common is coin! Plus, it ain't every day the Ashwalker himself walks in! So what do ya need?"

You dig into your pack and pull out a sample of the dragonscale and bone, and rap a knuckle against your breastplate to let him know you want armor.

"Armor, huh? Let's see this..." The blacksmith takes the scale and bone samples and inspects it with some sort of microscope device. "Ooooh, OOOOH, this is some high grade stuff! Must not have been easy to get!"

You nod at that.

"So, what kinda armor were you looking for?" The blacksmith chuckles. "Lookin' at you, it's pretty obvious you ain't getting one for yourself!"

You take out a small scrap of paper and quickly scribble down Morgan's measurements, pointing to a set of leather armor as an example of something you wanted.

"Hmmmm, oh, I see, for that little ranger lass that travels with you, right? The White Wolf!" The blacksmith nods. "Aye, I know what do. But what exactly do you want this armor to emphasize?"

You give the blacksmith a curious look.

"Well, you see, thanks to the quality of this dragonscale, I can do a LOT with it!" The blacksmith boasts. "I can make it super light, so it'll be tougher than normal leather or even mail armor while lettin' her run around without trouble! Or we can go maximum protection here, giving her something like plate armor, even if it's a bit more restrictive! My personal pick."

You nod at that. It sort of made sense.

"Or..." The blacksmith takes a closer look at the scales. "That's... interesting. With the right treatment, I think I can make this scale change color based on its surroundings. Kinda like a chameleon, you know? But it ain't gonna provide a lot in the way of actual physical protection, though."

Now THAT sounded interesting...

You mime a person running with your fingers, indicating you wanted to prioritize mobility. Besides her ability to scout, Morgan's other greatest strength was her speed.

"All right, I think I can design something up special for her!" The blacksmith nods. "Just get me the rest of the scale and bone and I'll have it done in a few days!"

You nod at that. Some of the Monastery initiates could handle the transport. You give the blacksmith a few gold coins as a deposit and then go on your way.

You note that Sol had already passed His zenith as this point, and was slowly setting towards the west. It would be getting late soon, and there was still no news about Nino or Morgan...

As you approach the gates of the Cathedral, you are immediately confronted by a pair of heavily armored Paladins. Ones that you had never seen before. Their armor was slightly different from the ones you've normally seen in Eisenwand, and even the ones guarding the gates seem to be watching nervously.

Reinforcements from the inner kingdoms, you suppose? It's not out of the question. Perhaps they were spooked by the Templars' movement here.

"What business do you have here, Templar?" One of the new Paladins grunts, his armor having an almost flawless silver sheen. A typical sign of never having been outside or in battle much.

You just simply point to the gate. You wanted to go inside to check on Nino.

"These gates are not open to those who would kill in Sol's name." The other new Paladin grunts. "Turn around, Templar."

It's like they didn't even know who you were. One of the Paladin gate guards shaking his head in the background seemed to confirm this.

The two Paladins watch you warily as you pass, but make no move against you. You've successfully called their bluff, as they would never strike down a man with his back turned, even if that man was a Templar. So predictable.

And it looks like Valentia had been summoned when the confrontation started, as she's already there at the gates to meet you, arms crossed and an exasperated expression on her face.

"Honestly, you always have to stir up trouble, don't you?" She shakes her head.

You simply shrug. You could have two bodies in the streets if you were so inclined.

"Whatever, Mom and Naru managed to pull it off." Valentia turns and motions for you to follow. "Come on, we've got to make this quick."

Valentia leads you into the Cathedral and into the neighboring infirmary ward, which looks all to familiar to you. You're led further in to where the private healing chambers were, until finally, you reach Nino's room. Nino was tucked away in a bed, softly snoring while next to her were Solana and Naru. Naru looked dead on her feet while Solana appeared to be heavily fatigued, though doing her best to hide it.

"The ritual was successful." Solana manages a weak smile. "The process was... difficult. But we managed to extract all of the crystal from Nino's body."

"We triple checked." Naru grunts.

"Which leaves us with one final issue." Valentia scowls as she nods towards a wooden bowl, holding numerous blue crystal shards, some still coated in Nino's blood. "What do we do with those?"

"If possible, I would like to keep them for study." Solana suggests. "In case a similar incident were to happen, or to see if there are any healing qualities that can be gleaned from these strange crystals..."

"I say we just destroy 'em." Naru nearly spits but holds back in Solana's presence. "Too dangerous to keep around, if you ask me."

"I'm sure Nino would be angry at that." Valentia points out.

"Yeah, well, she can be a real dumb squirt sometimes." Naru retorts.

No she isn't...Solana's is a cleric that is married to a paladin and her daugther is a paladin. But she is a high level clergy woman.

Neither. I don't even trust the monastery what with Fisty McSmash running around.

You merely nod at Solana. She can keep the shards. They'll probably do more good under her care than anybody else's.

"Thank you." Solana smiles softly at you, which seemed to have healing properties of its own.

"So what's the story on those nerds out there?" Naru asks, nodding the window where you had a line of sight on the front gate.

"Reinforcements." Valentia rolls her eyes. "Meant to counter the Templar movements down here, but it's clear none of them know or care how things work in the Frontier or in Eisenwand."

"Unfortunately." Solana shakes her head. "Anyways, even though the worst is over, Nino here will need a few more days of rest. I'd like her to stay here in the meantime, if that's fine with you."

"Well, that's nice and all." Naru grunts. "But the Monastery is also pretty adequate to take care of her."

You just shake your head and gently pick up Nino. You'd rather she recover at the Monastery, where you can keep a close eye on her.

"I understand." Solana nods. "Vally, can you please send them out the back way? I'd hate to have them be accosted on the way out."

"Understood." Valentia sighs, still annoyed at being called her pet name by her own mother. "Come on, big guy, let's go."

Naru yawns as she struggles to your feet, requiring you to half carry her along as you hold Nino in your arms. Valentia quietly leads you through the Cathedral's hidden passages like last time, eventually coming to a secret exit on the other side of the Cathedral.

"It should be a straight shot to the Monastery from here." Valentia tells you. "Better start moving before it gets dark."

You nod in thanks to Valentia as you shuffle off with Nino and Naru.

However, it did bother you that you haven't had sight or sound of Morgan this whole time. You'd think she'd try to get back into contact with you...

It was getting far too late, and neither Nino nor Naru were in a state to travel alone. You suppose it would just be best to take them back to the Monastery first and figure out things from there, especially while you still had daylight. Making sure Nino was securely in your arms, you head out back to the Monastery with Naru in two.

As you head out into the field, Sol was starting to sink lower and lower towards the horizon, and the grass fields were bathed in pink and orange light as His presence faded. Out in the distance, just a few hundred meters away was the Monastery, the lanterns already lit and smoke rising from the numerous hearths and fires lit within. You had to admit, it was a very welcome sight.

However, the moment was interrupted when you saw a flash of white as Morgan bounds in from nowhere and tackles you to the ground. You're only barely able to fall on your back to prevent any further injury to Nino, and Naru instinctively ducks down as well, her adventurer experience driving her movements.

You're about to shoot an accusing glare at Morgan when you notice that she was ragged and slightly burnt. Her cloak was completely gone and her clothes were charred and still smoldering slightly.

"Bastard had backup of his own." She hisses. "He had a partner with him. She was packing a nasty chain whip."

"Wait, what the hell's going on?" Naru groans.

"Bad guys tailing us." Morgan explains bluntly. "I had to retreat and they started tailing you again. Looked like they were about to pounce so I had to do something."

"Aw maaaaaan." Naru grunts. "Can't even fucking walk home without getting into some dumb random encounter now!"

"I'll try to lead them off." Morgan continues, rising back up to a crouching position to get ready to move while still staying hidden in the tall grass. "You get Naru and Nino back to the Monastery as quick as possible."

You quickly put Nino in Naru's arms and point toward the Monastery, telling Naru to make a run for it. The initiates there should be able to see what's happening and alert Havel.

"O-okay, but what about you?" Naru asks.

Before you can answer, Morgan bolts out of cover, bow already drawn as she fires arrows into the field. Her arrows seem to stop in mid air as they collide with an invisible barrier, shattering it like glass to reveal two sapphire Mage Knights, one warmed with twin swords and he other with a chain whip, like Morgan said.

You point to the Monastery again.

"Right, right, don't gotta tell me twice!" Naru says, finding a new source of energy in the adrenaline now pumping though her system as she bolts off with Nino in tow.

Meanwhile, Morgan continues to try to kite the Mage Knights away from your position, but as a pair, they still had the advantage, with the sword Mage Knight using his blades to bat Morgan's arrows out of the air, giving the whip Mage Knight the breathing room necessary to start casting some sort of spell, her whip rattling and glowing in the air with fiery energy.

You draw your halberd and make a beeline straight for the chain whip Mage Knight. You needed to stop her from casting as a priority. Thankfully, she and her partner were distracted by Morgan and weren't facing in your direction.

Or pretty much any member of our group being held prisoner. We have quite a few exceptional, and important people in our party.

Don't exactly want to see Nino being used as a living mana battery, or Morgan being the Elf Princess' new pet to name a few.

The chain whip Mage Knight never even sees you coming as you charge in, swinging your halberd in a wide arc. The heavy end connects straight into her side, and you can feel flesh tearing and bone cracking under the sheer blunt force of the blow, which her armor fails to stop. The blow is enough to send her cartwheeling into the grass, and the energy powering her weapon dissipates as her concentration is broken.

The sword Mage Knight turns to see what's going on, but that momentary distraction is all Morgan needs as she plunges accurate arrow fire into him. Some of the arrows deflect harmlessly off of his armor, but a couple stick in the thinner sections and he stumbles.

However, before you and Morgan can take advantage of the situation, the chain whip Mage Knight pulls a stone from her pocket and smashes it against the ground. The stone shatters, emitting a bright flash of light that temporarily blinds you.

When your vision returns, you're only left with yourself and Morgan standing alone in the field, the two Mage Knights completely gone.

"What the hell was that all about?" Morgan pants, her eyes still darting from side to side and her ears twitching in an attempt to require them. "Why were they following us."

You just shake your head. You had no idea either, but with so many forces converging on Eisenewand, you weren't surprised if you were starting to attract unwanted attention.

"Things are start to get real crazy here, aren't they?" Morgan sighs as she stumbles over and leans on your side, clearly exhausted.

You just nod as you pat her head. In the distance, you could already see Havel and a squad of acolytes making their way over to you. Well, at least Naru and Nino were safe, then.

Still, all these unfortunate encounters in just one day boded ill for the future...
