The Yorkshire Case has drawn to an abrupt close, but Henry’s prior actions have saved Charle’s life, and Henry has taken on the boy as his apprentice. Somewhat earnestly, and somewhat to make up for his past sins. His meeting with Gerald has rattled him, and he worries for the man’s safety. The cult of progess’ machinations remain a mystery for the time being, whatever they were doing out here cannot bode well for the future. Lastly, the church has begun to make peace with the noble families, their intentions seemingly are not to seize power, but to stave off something far worse.

Quest rules:
1. All dice rolled are assumed to be D100 unless otherwise stated
2. In most situations, only the first two dice rolls will be counted, if the threads become more popular this may be changed. This choice ultimately falls to the Lorekeeper, odd circumstances may cause him to overlook this rule (a ton of crits later down the chain for instance)
3. All dice rolls are final
4. Critical fails are considered to be between 1-5, Critical hits are between 95-100. Crits overpower any other roll except another crit. In the rare chance that a crit fail and crit success happen. The Lorekeeper will do something interesting from a story angle. Similarly, rolling 2 of the same number will be considered a MEGA crit, just pray its two high numbers.
5. Near misses may occur, where a rolled number is close to the required threshold, whether over or under. This can have an impact on how the story proceeds. However these are up to the decision of the Lorekeeper.
6. Sometimes there are optional choices one may participate in, these will generally NOT be taken unless there are multiple posters who wish it, assuming there are multiple posters in the thread
7. There are often times choices with multiple parts, each part is counted separately, unless otherwise stated, sometimes rolls will be required before counting the second, third, etc, part
8. There will be “Time Limited” decisions, in which characters may only do a set number of actions, these will be clearly marked. Generally you will only be able to choose one decision per ‘round’.
9. Interviews: Interviews will generally be a freeform set of questions that the readers have to ask the person they are interviewing. No hand holding here, I will purposefully leave up wrong answers or decisions, although for the most part careful readers will be able to tease these out.
10. Rules may be subject to change between threads, but will not change during the same thread. These rules are what we will follow for the remainder of this thread.

Henry woke up slowly, his mind still groggy. He didn’t like the past getting dug up like this, he had moved past everything. Or at least he tried to, Johnny had taught him such things could ruin a man completely and utterly, and for what it was worth, the guy had experience in it. Henry sat up, basking in the shimmering rays of the dawn sunlight. He was in a small cramped inn room, Johnny waved at him from his usual corner. No matter where they were he always seemed to gravitate towards one. At least if one was available. The man just hated standing if there was something to lean on, even though he was undead and he couldn’t feel exhaustion. Charles was still soundly sleeping in the room’s sole other bed, not for long.

Henry quickly got the boy up, who to his credit woke up after only a minute of being shaken. The three got breakfast, some fresh air, and most importantly, some coffee. The city had a much, much better variety than even New Haven had, and Henry relished it. Celeste would have even better delights. He missed his city, even with its ‘troubles’ it was better than anything else in this fucked up world.

The three sat around a wooden table in a small pub on a side street, a local joint that Henry had become familiar with during his few trips to Yorkshire Proper. Charles was asking him all sorts of questions about magic, what his duties would be, and how he could contribute, and Johnny… well he was being Johnny, still annoying him by insisting he use proper manners, as if it actually mattered.

Henry was already busy scheming, the whole failing graveyard runes had given him a wonderful idea. He’d be going into the corpse trade again. Sure it’d be dangerous, but the corpses would be “ripe” for the plucking if the runes were failing en masse. He could even get really good ones in the soldier’s graveyards around the city… and besides he’d be doing a public service by getting them away from the city. He knew Johnny would violently object but the money would be far too good to pass up, he might even be able to permanently pay off Vermillion. But he’d need contacts along the coast, in Avignon or maybe in one of the other cities…. He’d have to ask around.

There was also Larry, they had a meeting place and a time and Henry didn’t want to be late for that. For whatever reason he liked the guy.

Decisions:
1. Talk about magic with Charles (write in optional)
2. Talk to Johnny about travel preparations (write in optional)
3. Thank whatever asshole is up there for keeping the boy safe
4. Congratulate yourself for keeping the boy safe.

"What was Rosa teaching you last? Channeling? Let's practice visualizing and drawing mana."

“What was Rosa teaching you best you remember?” Henry asked.

“Channeling I think you called it… drawing upon mana.” Charles said.

“Do you want to practice?” Henry asked.

“Do I ever!” Charles responded, leaping up from his half-finished plate. Henry politely reminded him that he’d paid for that, and that he’d eat all of it.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The two stepped out into the farmland that surrounded the city, the roadside had a few trees and various shrubbery. Johnny stood watch but only the occasional traveler could even bother them out here. A perfect place to do some magic practicing, Henry really didn’t want to spend the money to practice at the guilds here, fuckers always overcharged. Johnny had said that they had a bit of time before they would need to catch their boat. The trip would take a couple days, with a stop in Grutzberg. Henry hoped to get a good view of the clock tower there, the thing was gorgeous if his memory served him

she is, we're all heading back together, she agreed. And yes, its where Henry lives. He figures that if the demon cult finally does come for him, it really doesn't matter where he is.
>>

The two practiced mage sight and channeling. The channeling once again went poorly, but Henry did notice flickers of white mana from Charles’ fingertips even if only fleeting. He just had to keep at it, and he’d be able to manifest the small smidgen of mana, from there he’d have to learn to form connections to the land. Henry had come to enjoy the land around here during his travels, the mountains soothed him.

Charles noted the rune wall had gone back to normal, but something else, the castle keep had a second, inner rune wall. The boy hadn’t noticed before, and Henry hadn’t felt it was important. But a lot of the bigger cities tended to have multiple layers, mainly for show more than anything. Under normal circumstances they were hard to pierce.

The day wound on a bit before the three of them ventured towards the church camp. Rosa and Gerald were waiting near one of the various tents, and seemingly talking to one another about something. Henry tapped his foot impatiently for a few minutes, they just kept going on and on. They hadn’t even noticed that his group had arrived. Henry didn’t like keeping Johnny too close to this many people, and this many Cathars at that, too much opportunity for something to happen, in all honesty.

Decisions:
1. Let them keep talking (optional: talk to someone else)
2. “Of course the two of you are friends”

“Of course the two of you are friends.” Henry said, walking up to the two of them and ending their little conversation.

“Of course I know her.” Gerald said, laughing a bit to himself. “This little firebrand here marched into the Solarch’s tent and yelled her head off the moment she found out who Charles was, apparently she’d been traveling with you and the kid for a little less than a week? She actually caused such a fuss the Solarch restrained her himself. Luckily I convinced him it was just a massive misunderstanding, she would’ve ended up in a jail cell or worse otherwise.”

“I refuse to allow the church to descend into wanton murder, for whatever ‘good reason’ they may have.” Rosa said, eyeing Gerald. The woman looked utterly embarrassed. “And besides it isn’t fair for a mere child to be charged with such crimes, I’m happy that the Solarch prevented a travesty from occurring.”

“Bravest woman I ever met.” Gerald said. “Happy you found someone Henry.”

“It’s not like that you ass.” Henry said.

“Uh huh.” Gerald said, snickering as he strolled over to Henry. “Just stay safe on the trip back. I’ll be back in a few months once things are settled out in outer provinces.”

“Sounds good, guess that drink of ours will just have to wait, I don’t want to keep my friends back home waiting.”

“I’d like to talk about that next chance we get.” Gerald said. “And a real talk this time.”

Decisions:
1. “I’m going to solve that issue myself, I don’t need your help.”
2. “I don’t want you to get involved, it’d put me in a bad position.”
3. “Stay safe out there, I get the feeling things are going to start getting bad.”

“Stay safe out there, I get the feeling things are going to start getting bad.” Henry said, before hugging the man, a heartwarming gesture. Henry didn’t want the guy to get himself killed in some shit hole.

“If we succeed then everything will be back to normal in no time.” Gerald said. “Stop being so pessimistic for once.”

“So you really can’t tell me anything?” Henry said.

“I swore a promise to the church not to, Henry.” Gerald said. “But, it’s nothing to worry about quite yet, things haven’t gotten too bad. Just stay calm for once in your life, please?”

“I’ll try bud.” Henry said, before heading out.

The four of them, Rosa, Charles, Johnny, and Henry, left towards the dockyards that held their boat. The dockyards were a collection of docks, factories, warehouses, some random wooden buildings scattered around, a few taverns and bars for sailors, and a few random buildings. The ship itself was a cargo freighter that Henry had gotten Johnny to arrange travel on for the cheap. They would be stopping off in Grutzberg for a day or so, but it would be the fastest route back home. They arrived fairly quickly, and thus they had some time to kill. It was a nice slow sort of day. The trip down river would take about a half day or so, so the sailors weren’t in any great rush. From what Henry understood the cargo was herbs and spices taken from the frontier, and a few other various things.

Decisions: (pick one)

“Hey Rosa, want to go for a walk or something along the river? Might be good to unwind a bit, sounds like we’ve both had a rough week.”

Rosa stopped for a minute in front of the boat, flashing Henry a quizzical glance. “That’d be lovely actually, I had some things I wanted to discuss with you, regarding the trip we’re about to go on, and the one we’ve already been on. But what about Johnny and the royal heir?”

“He ain’t a royal anymore, he’s just a kid, and my apprentice.” Henry said, with the smallest bit of pride. “Johnny has already agreed to make sure Charles stays safe. Now that the church isn’t coming for him anymore things have gotten a hell of a lot safer for the three of us. It’s actually pretty nice.”

“Alright then, after you.” Rosa said, motioning for Henry to start walking.

The walk along the river was leisurely, the farmland around Yorkshire was pretty, and the backdrop the mountains provided added an air of calm to the whole area. Henry had wisely gone upstream, a walk along a river downstream of a city was not a recipe for a fun time.

Decisions:
1. “So where are you from Rosa?”
2. “How long have you been on the road?”

“I just wanted to say thanks, for standing up for us. I can’t believe you were crazy enough to go against the Solarch.” Henry said.

“It’s not like I did it in plain view.” Rosa said, avoiding eye contact, she seemed all flustered. “S-sides its just the right thing to do, I’m not going to just meekly obey when I know for a fact something is unjust, that’s not very righteous at all!”

“I’m not sure whether you’re brave or naïve.” Henry said. “Regardless I appreciate it.”

“So why did you help him, truly?” Rosa asked. “I know you aren’t the sort to just… do something like that.”

“I was being honest, I didn’t want him to end up like me, and I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen.” Henry said. “It’s the least I can do for him, and at the very least I can ensure he isn’t used as a political tool.”

“Awful kind of you.” Rosa said, the woman was being sincere. “I suppose everyone has a soft spot.”

“So where are you from Rosa?” Henry asked. “I’m from the coast myself.”

“I actually grew up on a farm near the southern edge of Sol Province… I uh…” Rosa said, looking at the ground.

“Something you don’t wanna share? Its fine, I got plenty I don’t talk about too.” Henry said. “We all got our problems.”

“Thanks.” Rosa said, smiling warmly. “It’s refreshing honestly, someone not being so nosy.”

“That’s hilarious coming from you.” Henry said.

“I suppose it is.” Rosa said, chuckling softly.

Decisions:
1. “You should laugh more, makes you look cute.”
2. “So where did you pick up your training from?”
3. “Why did you even join the order of healers?”

“You should laugh more, it’s nice to see.” Henry said.

“Such a charmer.” Rosa said, before smiling warmly at him. “Not that I mind it of course… I mean uh…” The woman turned a slight shade of pink and turned away bashfully.

“Didn’t mean to put you on the spot there.” Henry said playfully. “What was the farm like?”

“It was, it was lovely, slow days just spent mending and cooking or whatever else my mother needed me to do, I sometimes played in the local stream or the lake if it was hot enough. The village was always lively too.”

“Why did you leave?” Henry asked. “Right, nevermind.” He corrected

“Its fine, I just, well I suppose I couldn’t get any healing training there, so I left.” Rosa said, the woman seemed distant as she said that. Probably a sore spot.

“So where did you pick up your training from?” Henry said, changing course.

“The church wouldn’t take a no name girl from a no name farm, believe it or not.” Rosa said. “At least none of the larger Healer’s abbeys. Generally they take those who are a bit older, or those who, well, have more ‘natural talent.’ When I was younger I had very little, but I just never got a chance to learn.”
>>
>>2624457

“You aren’t self-taught are you?” Henry inquired. “You’re very, very skilled for someone so young, that much I can tell you.”

“Heavens no, I was taught by, well by an old battle ax sort of woman. A healer down in a small coastal factory town to the southeast, at least it was small when I worked there. She took me in after I wandered there one day, stayed there for a few years before moving on.”

“Just like that?” Henry asked.

“Fate can be a fickle thing, brought our two paths together for whatever reason, I did what I could to help you reach your destination.” Rosa said. “Though it seems you already have a new one, must be nice to see where you are going.”

“So why did you join the order of healers?” Henry asked. “Seems they were more trouble than they were worth.”

“Because I wanted to help people Henry, so many good people out there who get hurt and can’t travel to a city, or can’t afford healer’s fees… I wanted to do my part to improve the world, one patient at a time. It’s a bit of a simple goal really.”

“Admirable.” Henry said.

The two walked for a bit longer, the river and farmland turning into small pockets of forest and grasslands perfect for raising cattle. Henry knew the area well enough, at least the way back along the river.

“So why do you trust the church so much? I don’t mean the doctrine, that’s something I’m hardly qualified to talk about. But you seem dead set in your morals. Outside of the most obvious conflicts, like what happened with Charles, do you ever have issues?”

“I suppose it’s hard for someone who’s closed themselves off to understand.” Rosa said, the woman wasn’t mocking him, just stating facts. “The church isn’t those fancily dressed priests, bishops, and cardinals back in the capital, it’s the average people trying to get by, the farmer trying to support his family, or the trader helping to keep towns supplied. It’s every priest who helps keep his flock safe and happy, or every Cathar who risks his life, Henry. That’s what I’m a part of. Not some calcified doctrine or a mere piggybank for richer folk. Most of the time the church offers survival to a lot of the smaller communities in the farmland and in the outer provinces, that and a community. It’s why I offered to help you pray Henry, I wanted to help you open yourself up to others.”

Decisions:
1. “I don’t pray, Rosa, and not just in a church either.”
2. “I lost the ability to trust other people a long time ago.”
3. “All I care about is my own survival.”
4. “I don’t know, Rosa.”
5. “Look, I appreciate you trying to help me, but I don’t think you can.”

Hahaha, you do have a way of putting a guy on the spot. Trusting the people you meet is a function of who those people are, though. Surround your self with villagers needing healing and you'll find trust comes easy, other people, less so.

Can you accept this opinion on the church? I see they do good, healing, protecting whatever. I know it offers solace and hope to many. It's just...not my people.

Henry has a slight muscular build due to Johnny's training regimen, he has a stubble at most points but has grown a full beard as of the yorkshire case due to the week. He wears a long red cloak which is his defining feature, he treasures the thing more than any other possession he owns. He also has a pair of leather waterproofed workboots he wears almost everywhere. If you want something more specific feel free to ask. The man himself is currently twenty two years of age.

“Ha ha ha, you sure do have way of putting a guy on the spot.” Henry said. “You find trust easy since the only sorts of people you surround yourself with are villagers who need something from you, something you’re willing and able to provide. If you couldn’t heal any longer, they’d throw you right out.”

Rosa scowled at that and then looked at the river. “You’re probably right.” She said, under her breath. The woman had become gloomy.

“I’m like that, I get that the church does a world of good, healing, providing protection, and the angels on top. But… it’s not who I am, and they aren’t really my people.”

“You choose who you’ve surrounded yourself with Henry, you still can choose.” Rosa said.

“I really can’t.” Henry said. “I’ve just learned to accept it.”

“You still can, just come with me, into a small chapel, anything really.” Rosa said, the woman seemed to be opening up a bit. “You’re not a bad person, no matter how much you believe you are. You’re no knight or paladin, sure. No prince charming, but you’re a far better person than most. I was just too blind to see it when we first met, I thought you were just some stranger the inquisitors had drug out of the depths.”

“Look, I appreciate you trying to help me, Rosa, but I don’t think you can.” Henry said. “I don’t pray, and not just in a church either. Not due to laziness or mere uncertainty either.”

“Who hurt you? God almighty, what happened?” Rosa said. “I remember being the same once. Fate, wasn’t very kind to me.” Rosa said.

“Just because you couldn’t find training to become a healer?” Henry asked. “I hardly think that’s the same.”

“No its… it’s a personal thing, I just, I know what it’s like to be a pariah, that’s all. I suppose that’s why I’ve…uh… taken an interest in you.” She said, once again looking away bashfully.

“As for who hurt me, it’s a disturbing tale, and something that could put you in danger. It not something to be told on a sunny walk through farmlands. I can’t tell you, not now, probably not ever. It’s something that I’ve never told anyone else, not even Gerald. I don’t think I ever will either.”

“I see.” Rosa said, holding her hands behind her, fidgeting uncomfortably. “I… I’m here Henry.” She finally said. “If you ever want to talk about it, or need any help, I’m here as a friend.” She smiled warmly, Henry liked that.

“I appreciate it Rosa, truly. But I’m not a good person.” Henry said. “I’ve done a lot of things that I’ll regret for the rest of my life.”

Rosa went to respond then stopped. She asked for a few minutes to think ‘of the right way to put it.’

They had doubled back, hitting the center of the forest and then heading back towards the city. The forest itself had its own sort of charm, and in the midday sun it was the safest it could be, still Henry kept his eyes peeled, this was the edge of the inner provinces.

“Then do you mind if I ask you something, something that’s been on my mind for a while?” Rosa asked. “If you’re such a bad person, why did you agree to take Charles under your wing, surely you can’t be a good influence.”

Henry looked at Rosa, grinned a mile wide, and laughed hard. Very hard, probably the hardest he’d laughed in a long time. Certainty the hardest he’d laughed on the trip.

Rosa clenched her fist and pouted at him. “What are you doing.”

Henry fell to the ground and rolled around for a moment, before regaining his composure and standing back up.

“I’m sorry, it’s just, a ‘good’ person would have just turned him over to the church, that’s just the right thing to do right?”

He laughed more when she looked away from him.

“I may be cynical, distrusting, and paranoid, but hell, those are the qualities that keep people alive, its kept me alive, and its kept Charles alive. He might’ve even turned himself in, for all I know, had I not acted. I’ve seen a guy do it before, too. Threw his own life away for no good reason.” Henry said.

“Oh.” Rosa said uncomfortably, shifting from one foot to the other. “I don’t really know what to say to that.”

“Nothing needs to be said.” Henry finished. “The worlds a fucked up place is all I can say.”

What does she think of an institution that wasn't religious, but still provided support and help for the people without demanding their allegiance or payment except what the people were willing to give.

If she believes people are capable of being good without gaining directly from it, whether it's temporal power and position or a reward from a God.

After all, it's not like it's really good for it's own sake if people do it for a reward, or if they withhold it for judgement and use it to force people to obey them.

“Do you think you need to be a part of the church to be a good person, Rosa?” Henry finally asked.

“What kind of question is that?” Rosa asked.

“Maybe that’s the wrong question, but. Do you think people are capable of being good without getting a prize at the end of it. Without benefiting from it, bascially. From what I understand, from what I’ve seen since I’ve been a kid. The Church, it’s just a bigger cult, instead of demons or whatever foul creature they have angels, but it’s really just the same thing in the end. It’s just controlling people but with a friendlier face. It’s not really good for its own sake if people do it for a reward after they’ve died, right? Or if they withhold it for judgement and use it to force people to obey.”

“WHAT?!” Rosa said, her eyes flashing angrily. She seemed like she was about to kick him in the head again.

“Can’t people be good without the church?” Henry asked. It calmed Rosa down at the very least. He remembered what Johnny had said once, that most people couldn’t be good without some grand doctrine, some purpose in their lives. Without anything, they’d just… drift.

“I hope so.” Rosa finally said. “I don’t think it’s something as simple as being good or being evil. It’s belonging to something, it’s being able to see your neighbor and knowing he’s in the same place as you are, that everyone is. It’s also that we wouldn’t survive long without the angels. I know the Cathars and even the militia men are brave, strong even. But without the runes, or the holy magic’s the church can grant people, we wouldn’t survive I don’t think.”

“I don’t know Henry.” Rosa finally said. “I don’t know, I just have faith in other people. Sometimes it lets me down, sure. But so many times I’ve found such kindness in others. I saw some of that in you, too.”

“Come on, lets head back.” Henry said, breaking into a run. “Better hurry up, if you don’t want to get left behind! Lets stop talking about such depressing things or we won’t get anything done, right?”

He chuckled a bit, and after a moment, so did Rosa. The two quickly made their way back to the docks were Johnny and Charles were waiting. Johnny was once again training Charles on combat stances. They weren’t using blades of course, but the footwork and positioning would carry over nicely.

“How’s it going guys?” Henry asked. “You’re footwork is better, Charles.”

“It’s actually going swimmingly sir.” Johnny said. “Charles here has a bit of a knack for it I’ve found, and he’s a quick learner to boot. A couple months of practice and he’ll be real dangerous with that blade you got him.”

“Ya’ll packed?”

“Yes, no matter how many times you ask I’ll always make sure we have anything we need.”

As the two entered onto the top deck of the boat, Henry turned to Rosa, and spoke with her.

“Thanks for listening, Rosa. We should do this again sometime.”

“Yeah…” Rosa said. “I was thinking about what you said, but. I believe in people, Henry. I believe in the church too, I think it’s full of good people. The sort of people who protected both New Haven, and Blaise. That’s what the church is. At least that’s what I think it is. I don’t know why you seem to try testing my faith, but. I appreciate it, truly. I’ve never given it too much thought before, and honestly it’s been a long time since anyone’s really spoken to me about it.”

“Hey Rosa?” Henry asked.

“Yeah?” Rosa said.

“Thanks for being a good friend.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The ride commenced fairly smoothly, the boat drifting downriver in the noon sun. They’d be sailing until just before dusk, and there wouldn’t be too much to do except bask in the sun on the deck of the boat. The lower decks would be off limits and blazing hot to boot. All they could do was bask in the shade cast by the wheelhouse. The boat itself was made of wood and steel, smoke emanating from its towering stack. The thing was a beast of a craft. Henry felt himself once more longing for the ocean. He wanted to go ride out on it again. Feel the salt air.

Soon they would arrive in Grutzberg, with its clock towers, and the massive one in the center of the city, just outside of the holy grounds. Their little misadventure had been fun, but it’d be nice to go home to a peaceful, if somewhat shady, life.

Henry was wrong however, this was just the start of a much larger set of misadventures.

He then remembered the last thing that Abraxas had ever told him, a prophecy of sorts.

“We will meet once more, Henry Fisher. You will come crawling back to me of your own free will, everything you ever gained will hang in the balance. At your darkest hour, you will give in, and you will give away this small bit of freedom I have granted you. Then, and only then, will my grand victory be final.”

Current Mana

RED (CURRENTLY 4)

BLACK (CURRENTLY 5)

BLUE (CURRENTLY 2)

============================================================
CURRENT SPELLS (may be tweaked if they are over or under powered)

Bolt: A fairly basic bolt of lightning energy that can fry most living creatures in one hit. Bigger boys and those with magical resistance will be able to tank it.(Costs one bar of red mana to cast)(Is always snapcasted)

Raise Dead: Basic necromantic ritual, will bring to life any corpse or dead animal. Can be controlled with SIMPLE spoken commands. More complicated rituals can be performed but require setup to complete. (costs 0.2 bars of black mana to cast)(can be snapcasted for 0.5)

Ghiest Trap: Will temporarily trap a ghiest and force it to follow your commands (costs 1 bars of blue mana)(Is always snapcasted)

Close Mind: Will give you a better chance to resist attacks against your mind, or mind reading spells in general. Will also give you great resistance against insanity. (costs 0.5 blue mana to cast)(is always snapcasted)

Lightning Talons: Whats better than sword or claw? A sword or claw with LIGHTNING! Will allow you to temporarily enchant a weapon you OR an undead servant you control is currently wielding. Don’t have a weapon? Don’t mind getting a few second degree burns? No problem! Simply enchant your arms or the arms of something you control! Maybe later on you won't need a weapon at all! (Costs 2 red mana to cast, effects will last for about fifteen seconds)(CAN CAUSE MASSIVE DAMAGE IF IT CONNECTS)(CANNOT BE DISPELLED)

Dispel: Will completely negate a casted spell and all its subsequent effects, unless its resisted or itself countered. It will have no effect on spells cast on self, enchantments, or spells that are not currently "in the air" so to speak. (Costs 0.5 bars of blue mana to cast) (is always snapcast)
==============================================================
>>
>>2626861

>Henry gain 1 bar of mana, so pick a color
>Henry gains 1 new spell, pick the top three you want. Your first choice gets 3 points, your second choice gets 2, and your third choice gets 1, the choice with the most points wins!

=========================================================================================================================================================

Silence: Will completely stop you or a targeted person or object from making any noise at all, from any action. You can cancel the spell at any point of time. (Costs 1 bar of blue mana)(can be snapcasted for 1.5 bars of blue mana)

Undead Rush: Will cause any undead DIRECTLY under your control to break out in a run, allowing them to quickly close distance and overwhelm opponents. They will also be able to leap onto opponents as well. Effect lasts several minutes. (Costs 1 bar of black mana to cast)(can be snapcasted for 1.5 bars of black mana)

Undead Command: Dislike having to yell every time you want your zombies to kill someone or something? No problem! With this handy spell, you can simply send a small magic pulse to your zombies! (Costs: Nothing)(is always snapcast)

Necromantic Heart: Will allow you and up to one other person who maintains direct contact with you to avoid detection by any wandering undead (meaning not directly controlled). Will also make you appear dead to any who use scrying or magical means to try and detect you. (costs 1 bar of black mana to cast)(can be snapcasted for 1.5 bars of black mana)

Minor Scry (May be changed a bit if it makes it more fun to use): Will let you scope out a room or a small area of space and will allow you to detect both living and magical beings. Those who are using cloaking magics will of course be out of your sight, and you will not be able to control exactly where the spell will end up (costs 1 bar of blue mana to cast)(can be snapcasted for 2 bars of blue mana)

Dark Healing: Steal the very Vis from someone and use it to heal yourself, this can outright kill those who are already injured, but can be resisted by those with enough willpower or physical strength. Vis is the energy that binds a soul to a body. Removing all of it will cause the soul to float freely, leaving the body a dead shell. Cannot be used to heal another person or creature, because sharing isn’t fun. (Costs 2 Black mana to cast)(is always snapcast)

Ball Lightning: Why stop at just a bolt? Why stop at just sensical amounts of damage? Temporarily create a lightning elemental to wreak havoc among enemies. Will do MASSIVE FUCKING DAMAGE, but will be susceptible to harm from enemy weapons or magics. You can direct the ball without additional mana cost (costs 4 bars of red mana per casting)(can one shot angels and keep on chugging to give you an idea of how much raw power this is)(is always snapcast)(also called the BIG BOY)
>>
>>2626866
Blight: Weaken opponents in an arc from the direction you are casting. Depending on the skill and amount of mana you place into this spell, the weakening effect will become greater. Will not do direct damage to opponents and will wear off after a period of time. Can outright kill an opponent if it is unable to resist. Has no effect against undead or vampires.(Costs 1X bars of black mana to cast, which means it costs 1 to cast and then more mana to create the actual effect)(how much additional mana it takes to kill someone is a bit finicky)(is always snapcast)

Blightning: Can’t choose between Bolt and Blight? Well now you don’t have to! Casts a black bolt of lightning out from the user, and upon impact spreads the blight spell around in a radius of the impact point. You cannot regulate the strength of the blight spell due to the combination of mana, but the blight spell is actually pretty powerful. (Costs 1 bar of black mana, and 1 bar of red mana to cast)(Requires both blight, and bolt, to have been learned)(is always snapcast)

Cancel: Will prevent an opponent’s mage’s spells from being cast unless that mage can manage to overpower it. Basically you cut them off from their mana bank for a few turns unless they can overpower the spell itself. (Costs 4 bars of blue mana to cast)(is always snapcast)

Mind Rot: Can temporarily (or permanently if powerful enough) cause an opponent to lose their concentration for a period of time and be left slightly insane. Effects can vary WIDELY, ALSO CAN CAUSE PERMANENT MENTAL DAMAGE TO THE TARGET, USE WITH CAUTION. (Costs 1 bar of black mana, 1 bar of blue mana, and one bar of any mana to cast)(is always snapcast)

Rage: Will cause a target to go wild with rage, assuming they’re unable to resist the spell. This will have the effect of increasing their strength, speed, and stamina in the process. Both making them a danger to your opponents AND you for about a minute. (Costs 1 red mana to cast)(is always snapcast)

Internal Combustion: Destruction of a different sort. Dislike buildings? Weapon or armor getting in the way of a killing blow? Gargoyle getting you down? Not anymore! With this little spell any unliving material can be blasted from the inside, assuming you can get close enough to give it a little love tap. The effect can be instant or delayed, allowing you to set traps in certain areas! (Costs 1 red mana to cast)(costs 1.5 red mana to snapcast)(EFFECTS MAY VARY)
>>
>>2626876
Bone Splinters: Everyone loves zombies right? Well why not turn them into a lethal rain of bones? With bone splinters, you can! Sacrifice one zombie, gain a storm of killing bones that can be thrown at one target. (Costs 1 zombie or other undead creature you directly control, and 1 bar of black mana to cast)

Swerve: Pesky spells aimed at you constantly? With this little spell, you can grab those spells out of the air and make choose a new target for them for each spell affected! (Costs 1 red mana, 1 blue mana)(always snapcast)

Catch and Release: Really like that spell your opponent is using? Hate it? With this spell, you can dispel their spell, and then create a copy at will for the remainder of the fight. (Costs 2 Red mana, 2.5 blue mana)

Unbind: having issues with enchantments or curses? No more! With this spell you can simply remove them! (Costs: 1.5 blue mana + “X” other mana)(depends on enchantment being removed, may backfire if improperly applied)

Quicken: Don’t have enough time to cast a spell? Want to cast more? Well here is a fun little spell for you. Allows you to cast 1 additional spell this turn, 2 spells the next turn. (Costs 2 blue mana, 1 red mana to cast)

Weaken: Simple weakness spell, does not inflict any real damage but will weaken a target, may not be completely effective against stronger foes, but will incapacitate the average human. (Costs 1 blue mana to cast, is always snapcast)

Improvise: Failed to perform an arcana action, a will save, or some other "thinky" sort of check? About to eat shit due to it? With this spell you can make a second attempt ONE time per action. (Costs 0.5 red mana, 1 blue mana to cast)(Can be chained with dispel or potentially other spells)

==============================================================(CHAPTER START)========================================================================

The boat slowly chugged its way downriver, the gentle spring breeze slowly coasting over its top deck. There were a few sailors running to and fro, but the river didn’t offer up that many hazards. The entire trip was leisurely, a well-earned break all things considered. Rosa and Charles were practicing channeling, with little success, but Charles kept at it. Henry respected the kid for it. He’d need that sort of boneheaded determination.

The sun had slowly been blocked out by incoming clouds, the weather had turned overcast. Henry liked this sort of weather almost as much as rain. The city of Grutzberg had already come into view, and they would be arriving soon. He looked forward to seeing the clock tower, he’d always loved well-made buildings for whatever reason. He rarely had time to travel for pleasure and this little vacation of sorts would be a fun opportunity for him. He needed time to collect his thoughts for the corpse trading idea anyways. He didn’t know if he’d be able to secure contacts, let alone find someone to transport the bodies.

Duncan had outright refused him in the past. So he’d have to find someone else. Not only that, but he could use some sort of guard for the cargo, maybe he could get Larry in on it? Things to think about.

He swung his legs over the side of the ship, his arms holding onto the bars of the railing. He was bored out of his mind. He couldn’t fish here since that would qualify as poaching, which was illegal of course. Nor could he practice an idea he had for a necromantic spell. He was stuck.

Henry picked himself up, and walked his way over to Johnny. The skeleton had never liked going out on the water, though he did his best to hide it of course. He was perfectly fine physically, or as good as a skeleton could be. But he was uneasy, Henry didn’t blame him, the terror of slipping beneath the surface and being lost forever was something he could relate to.

“You know, after we drop Rosa off, let’s just get back home and live uneventful lives, how’s that sound?” Henry said.

Johnny looked at Henry with shocked silence, before laughing. Henry soon joined in. He knew that’d never actually happen, he had far too much stupid shit in his life. Still, it’d been too long since they’d been able to just laugh like a couple of idiots together.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The boat pulled into the city’s docks, located in a natural harbor on the east side of the river. The city was well known for its clock towers, and more importantly, the large one near the city’s center. The place served as an important location for several industries. Henry could already see a bunch of factories belching smoke into the air. The things had been springing up in quite a few cities, even since Henry was young, promising work and more importantly, safety from the terrors of the farmland.

Henry didn’t really get the appeal of such dangerous working conditions.

The group quickly made their way to the mages guild. The town was bustling with life, the place was massive of course, but Henry noticed something strange. There were piles of clocks littered in a few locations, all busted up beyond repair. There were all sorts as well, from cheaply made pieces of junk to grand wooden masterpieces. The townsfolk spoke in hushed whispers and seemed to shy away from them, the newcomers. Something strange had been going on. Henry didn’t plan to stay here for too long, he’d just have to keep his head down.

The mages guild was guarded by several mages, each in their blue robes, and it took a little while for Henry and his party to gain entry into the location. Again, everyone seemed to be on edge, the whole town seemed that way in fact. Maybe he’d poke his nose around afterwards, he knew a few information brokers here.

Henry took the time to check on the piles of clocks, the things were unguarded and honestly the townsfolk seemed to be doing their best to avoid them. He got a few worried looks from people but otherwise nobody paid him much mind. The clocks all had different times on them, each being broken at a different time and seemingly date. Some of the clocks had collected dust and other weather damage while other clocks seemed to be fairly undamaged beyond the obvious smashing that they’d endured. Henry quietly walked away, not wanting to tempt fate further. Some weird shit had been going on here.

He quickly entered into the mage guild hall, there were a few people at the desk acting as secretaries, they didn’t want to talk to Henry much, they seemed to be busy with large piles of paperwork, Henry scanned a few pages but found it to be utterly menial and uninteresting.

He only found a single notice at the entrance to the mages guild, it simply read.

‘Extra guards and security will be added to Savant-Guild operations, further incidents will not be allowed to occur on the premises. Also, due to church ruling, no magic is to be practiced after dusk, on threat of imprisonment or execution.’

Henry made a note to NOT use his magic after dark, at least not within the city walls.

The mage room costed 4 silver, a bit pricier than New Haven, certainly, but it still was very cheap for such a large city, he’d expected to pay double that. Had they not had a lot of traffic as of late? He supposed it was due to the trouble in town.

The mage room was much the same as the one in New Haven, except it looked a lot more… worn? For lack of a better term, all sorts of scorch marks and what haven you marred the runes along the walls, but Henry could tell they were undamaged. Things were always heavily warded to make sure they remained undamaged. Things costed a fortune to make and maintain after all. But all for a good cause, he’d be able to practice magic here without any cost to his ability to channel mana for the day.

(-4 silver coins)

“Don’t you know?” Rosa said. “Wait, I don’t suppose I ever told you, that’s kind of funny in a way. Feels like forever since we’ve met.”

“It’s been less than a week, Rosa. You didn’t answer my question either.”

“Oh, um. I Know how to preform healing touch on people, it’s how I saved your life. I can perform interior mending and combat healing as well, and a few minor healing spells, though I never use them anymore. I know how to perform a sacred ward spell to drive off evil things, a sacred shield spell to prevent evil things from getting close, and a shine spell.”

“That’s all?” Henry asked. “Beyond the healing spells and the shield that’s all fairly basic, and its all white mana.”

“Well it’s not like I throw myself into dangerous situations with wild abandon like you do, Henry.” Rosa rebuked. “I do know one other spell, Paraselene. It’s a bit tricky and expensive to cast for me though.”

“Now that’s sounds like complex spell.” Henry said. “Never heard of it before, actually.”

“Sometimes you need to destroy enchantments or curses in a location, its lets me do that, to a bunch of them at once. It also allows me to use the energy from their destruction to preform healing, if I need to, it’s saved my life before.” Rosa said. “Still, it is limited in its usage I’ve found. Not nearly as violent as that bolt spell I heard you had.”

“Sometimes you just need to kill something.” Henry said. “It does the job.”

“Bit vulgar if you ask me.” Rosa replied. “Being able to take a life so easily, I mean.”

“An attack spell that was bad at killing would be useless.” Henry finished.

Henry took the time to think over his options, he needed more utility spells. He’d never really needed them before, but he wanted to be able to expand his ability to use magic, he’d sort of plateaued after the incident, and he’d just sort of stopped. Now he was back on track once more.

He’d have to do some reading, perhaps he could find some books in the guild hall, he wanted something that would allow him to view past events in a place, could something like that even be done? It kind of fell under the purview of time magic, some of the highest level blue mana spell crafting one could cast. But it wasn’t really manipulating time so much as viewing it.

He sat down with Charles and Rosa, they had practicing to do. He sent out tendrils of mana to playfully poke at Rosa with, and she responded in kind. No real damage could be done this way of course, since they were both competent enough mages to not leave themselves open.

Charles on the other hand was concentrating hard, trying to manifest more flickers of white mana into his hands.

Charles focused harder than he ever had before, the flow of mana in the room swirled around him, ending Rosa and Henry’s little game as they both stopped to watch. They both took notice as white mana manifested itself in Charle’s hands for about a minute and a half, and then stopped. Charles slumped over, breathing heavily and drenched in sweat. He raised a hand up and gave them the thumbs up.

“I did it…” He wheezed, the boy was completely exhausted.

“You finally got it! Now you just gotta sustain it! You’re getting there!” Henry said, clapping. “Alright, want to see some real magic?” He said.

“You’re going to use that idiotic spell again?” Johnny chimed in. “I’ve needed a good laugh.”

“Fuck you Johnny.” Henry responded. “I need to concentrate.”

Henry concentrated, he needed to do this perfectly or his hands would be barbequed, and his pride would never recover. Johnny would call him scorch hands or something similarly stupid. He REFUSED to allow that to happen.

A moment later, lightning flashed across his hands, he’d done it! HE’D DONE IT. He slashed around at the air a bit, before grabbing a rock and trying to swing at it in an attempt to cut it in half. He missed, badly. He could already here Rosa giggling and Johnny losing it.

“Oh bravo!” Johnny called over, mockingly clapping.

Henry could feel like he was able to manifest the talons a bit longer, it didn’t hurt that this was an ideal environment. Perhaps with more practice he could extend the time? Still, he wanted to cut through some stone, so he picked up another rock and swung at it.

He made a few bad mistakes.

First off, his ability to use the spell was still shaky, and his aim needed improvement, so he missed the stone completely. Two, he was rather close to the wall. So his attack hit it. Three, he vastly underestimated the spells effectiveness.

Time slowed down a tiny bit. He watched awestruck as the talons began to cleave through the protective wards that shielded the runes on the wall. The claws got through about a dozen wards, then the runes, and then the underlying stone. Holy fuck, HOLY FUCK.

He’d carved a nasty gash along the wall, and sent MASSIVE ripples out as the wards quickly filled the gap back in, desperately attempting to maintain their own integrity. He felt the mana flow in the room become choppy, he’d just messed up the spell allowing magic to be easily practiced, oh fuck.

His bolt spell wouldn’t have even left a fucking scratch on these things. What had he created?

“HENRY!” Rosa screamed. “WHAT DID YOU DO?”

Johnny was silent. Sure, Henry had made an utter ass out of himself. BUT, he’d proven the fucker wrong.

Decisions:
1. “It can be fixed… right?”
2. “Nobody will notice.”

I've updated the spell description and gave it an upgrade.

Upgrades are gained through practice, clever thinking, or dumb luck. They are permanent and can alter a spells use, its strength, the amount of time the effect lasts, etc.

Basically I'm using them to allow for smaller, subtler upgrades to be created during cases. Plus it allows you boys to further customize Henry's spells.

“This… uh, this is fixable right?” Henry asked.

“I DON’T KNOW!” Rosa shouted, standing up and pacing around. “I DON’T KNOW!”

“No Henry, I don’t think it is.” Johnny said. “We should probably get out of here before anyone else takes notice. Congratulations on getting that spell to work, I am truly happy for you.” He said, his dry sarcasm not being completely lost on Henry.

“I CAN FIX THIS, THIS IS NORMAL.” Henry said, “I UH… OH FUCK OH FUCK.”

“WHY DID YOU THINK THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?!” Rosa shouted, “WHAT THE FUCK HENRY?”

“We should leave, I should leave, we’re gonna leave.” Henry said, beginning to calmly make his way to the door. He’d perfected this walk. The walk one did after doing something they REALLY shouldn’t have. A sort of calm powerwalk, to get one away from a scene but to not draw attention, and honestly he looked fairly normal. Johnny went over and scooped Charles up, the boy had fallen asleep after tuckering himself out. Lucky son of a bitch.

“Come on now, let’s get a move on folks.” Johnny said, mostly unaffected by the commotion. If anything he was jollier than usual. Piece of shit.

Rosa was barely keeping herself together, the woman had been thrown into a panic. So Henry, with a blank emotionless face, walked over, leaned in and said to her simply.

“Clearly this room is defective. They should’ve made it better.”

Rosa was at a loss for words, her arms simply hung limp at her sides.

Decisions:
1. Head outside of the city to collect your thoughts
2. Fess up and tell the guild what you did. (hahahaha….)

Henry made his way out of the room. He found the room number, a piece of wood with “105” carved into it. It was hanging off a nail via a piece of string attached to it. Henry grabbed the other six signs, 101-107, and swapped them around. It might not work completely but it would buy them some time, besides he didn’t plan to spend more than a day here, the guild would likely be too busy to even notice what had happened, let alone try to track him down for it.

He sure as shit wasn’t about to pay for the damages, it was the guilds fault for skimping on the wards, obviously. No way had he created something that could just cut through them, had he?

The walk out of the guild was tense, though honest Henry wasn’t too concerned. He saw that the two people at the front desks hadn’t even heard the noise of him shredding the wall, so there’d be no way an alarm had been raised, all he had to do was play it cool. Johnny did his best as well, carrying the sleeping form of Charles over his shoulder. Rosa however was terrified out of her mind, what a good person she was, she’d probably never even broken the law before. How precious.

“Least I didn’t blow up a knife like last time.” Henry said to Johnny, poking his elbow into the man. “Good lord that was embarrassing.”

“YOU WHAT?!” Rosa screamed, before cupping a hand over her mouth. A couple mages looked over at them before turning back to what they’d been doing.

The Savant Mage’s guild had a fairly nice courtyard, a bunch of trees and flowers arranged into a variety of patterns around the wall. However, off to one side lay a small pile of rubble. Henry didn’t pay it much mind until a mage hauled one last stone over with a wheelbarrow. It was the head of a gargoyle. Something had completely destroyed it, if that pile of rubble was all gargoyle, then it was probably two or three of them. That was kind of terrifying in its own right.

New Evidence
1. Destroyed Gargoyles?

Decisions:
1. Head outside of the city to collect your thoughts
2. Fess up and tell the guild what you did. (hahahaha….)

“So Rosa?” Henry asked. The healer had calmed down a bit though she was still a tad shaky on her feet. It had gone from cute to annoying quite frankly.

“What?” Rosa asked. “Want to destroy more property?”

“Do you want to head to the local healers abbey, you mentioned on the boat you’d want to go.” Henry said.

“Yeah, thanks.” Rosa replied. “I’m sorry for getting all worked up, but can you try to not get us arrested for doing stupid things?”

“I can try.” Henry said, he didn’t really mean it.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++]

The group arrived at the holy grounds, and what a sight it was. The gate was smashed in several locations, the wood and even the stone being heavily damaged, there were about a dozen Cathars stationed at the gate, all looking severely frazzled. Henry really did not want to get involved, nor did it look like any of them were in the mood to talk. Rosa managed to gain them passage inside and Henry found that the interior was completely undamaged. It was gorgeous. The church, more a cathedral, proudly stood in the center. There was a fairly large angel’s roost to one side, a large barracks, a separate jailhouse, and the abbey itself, along with a few other service buildings of course.

In front of the abbey there was an angel who had taken a seat on a log, the creature looked to be fairly downtrodden and depressed looking. She… it… she was missing a large chunk of one of her wings, and seemed to be grounded. This was fairly odd of course, since Henry knew well enough that angel’s flew with their magic. Even the loss of both wings shouldn’t be sufficient to ground them permanently.

2. Holy Grounds: injured angel

Henry decided to stay at the gate with Johnny and Charles, he still felt uneasy about the church what with all of the imprisonment and near execution that had occurred back in Yorkshire not three days prior. So he waited on the church side of the holy grounds, listening in to the Cathars as they went about things.

After about ten minutes, Charles shot up, apparently the kid had had a nightmare of some sort. Welcome to the fucking club.

Henry spoke with Johnny about what sort of monster could have possibly caused the damage to the gate. Johnny told him it must have been done with brute force, red or green mana spells would have simply destroyed the gate had they been properly applied, or done no damage at all had they failed. Give or take anyways. Sides for an enemy mage to get that far into the city, it would’ve had to been besieged, which was obviously not the case. They were a fucking stone’s throw from the capital after all. The fact that there was a wingless angel sitting around didn’t really frighten Henry TOO much, it could’ve just been from something else, obviously.

Henry took the time to listen to the Cathars at the gate, as luck would have it. They were discussing something of importance.

“So you really think that bitch… what’s her face?”

“Ophelia Von Krutz?” Another Cathar said.

“Yeah her, do you really think she killed the duke?”

“Not really. I don’t think she could even harm a fly. But she’s the obvious culprit. Especially with what’s happened, the two of them had been seen rubbing shoulders for some reason or another.”

“Then there’s that beastie that’s been causing all this trouble, say you think we could just bag the fucker? Even split two ways that’d pay for a lot of ale.”

“Stop daydreaming and get back to work.” A Templar said, scolding the two of them. ‘

At that, Henry decided he didn’t need to get caught snooping in on them, and took a nice long leisurly walk through the holy grounds. The interior was in fantastic shape, it looked like the inner walls had been cleaned recently, and the church itself looked fairly nice, if a bit scuffed in places due to age. There was no structural damage like what had occurred at the gate. Whatever had attacked hadn’t been able to break through.

As Henry finally got back to where Charles and Johnny were sitting, in the shade under a massive oak tree, he saw Rosa coming out of the abbey, the woman looked devastated.

New Evidence:
Royalty: apparently the Duke has been killed in mysterious circumstances
Reward: the church is offering some sort of reward for the killing of a monster. Unsure what the monster is or how much the reward is either.
Ophelia Von Kurtz: a person of interest, she seems to have had some connection to the Duke
Holy Grounds Interior: the interior of the holy grounds is undamaged, apparently whatever attacked the outer gate was unsuccessful.

Rosa collapsed onto the ground, first to her knees, then sprawling out onto the soft grass, she writhed about for a bit before coming to a stop. Henry gave her a few minutes then decided to risk a conversation.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Henry asked.

“They said they didn’t need a two bit healer helping them.” Rosa said, “They didn’t even offer to give me some busywork this time. I’m fine, just I dunno, dispirited?” She continued. “Not only that, they have more than a few patients in there, they need my help!”

“Perhaps its due to all the heightened security, and your sunny disposition of course.” Johnny replied. Rosa said nothing to him, had she not noticed his sarcasm?

“Do you want to talk about it?” Henry asked.

“Didn’t we already do that?” Rosa said.

“We’ll find out soon enough!” Henry said, slapping Charles on the back.

“How did I get roped into joining up with you Henry.” Rosa said rubbing her forehead and resigning herself to her fate.

“If I remember correctly you agreed to tagging along.” Henry replied.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The angel was still sitting down on her log when Henry sauntered over. The wing looked like it had been hastily healed up by some sort of healing magic’s. Interestingly she was out here and not inside the Roost, which was somewhat of an unusual occurrence. Usually angels didn’t venture out into the greater holy grounds, they just stuck to their towers. “Pardon me, ma’am.” Henry said, trying to put on his ‘clueless scholar’ routine. It worked more than he cared to admit, people saw what they wanted to after all.

“I’ve just arrived in town today, and I’ve been wanting to ask, what’s happening around here. Judging by you-“

“You could have asked anyone, yet you’re asking me?” The angel said. “At the very least use my name when addressing me. Least you can do if you insist on demeaning me so. Everyone enjoying the case so far? I think its gone off to a MUCH better start than Yorkshire did, at least by the amount of participation. Blaise and Yorkshire were experiments to see how different setups for the overarching cases would work, I think Blaise was a bit too action oriented and Yorkshire had too many places for players to fail.

I've also taken player complaints on lack of upgrades and progression to heart, hence the evidence system. This will also hopefully encourage you boys to ask around more, I noticed people really didn't during prior cases, so I think having a nice little journal to do so in will be helpful.

This town has been messed up - Abby gate crashed, Mage's gargoyles smashed and their wards damaged and weakened, broken clocks everywhere and an shady angel with a bite outta her wing sits on a log among the lowly mortals instead of being in the roost. Maybe that is normal..I mean I've been cleaning up messes all over, one town was nearly overrun by green mana wielding werewolves, a small village swarmed with undead and a Nevermore controlled by some wanna be dark sorcerer in over his head with a big book of dark magic and working for a failed lich, the village wards flickering and failing the whole while and vampire assassins are running loose in the countryside. Heck, there's probably a demon cult in the capital right under the angel roost. Everything normal here! I could ask a know nothing cartsman, the bumpkin with the turnips or I can ask one of the most esteemed and knowledgeable individuals available who probably actually knows what is going on as opposed to following rumors and gossip.

All right, as you wish.
But first I need to know your name.
And what I'm really interested in what is going on, because solving problems seems to be what I do.
From the looks of things, there's a problem here.
And I'm asking you, an angel, is because humans have a tendency to lie and trick.
If angels lie, ignore last statement.

“Okay then wings, what is your name?” Henry asked nonchalantly.

The angel showed surprise then anger.

“I will choose to ignore that… slight. Its Agla.”

“Look, you’re not doing the whole cold superior or even the smug superior routine, that’s why I’d figured I’d ask.”

“I suppose you’re my punishment for my failure then?” Agla asked. “I see no other reason for you to bother with me. Very well then, continue, mortal.”

Henry felt his eye twitch slightly when she called him a mortal, he fucking HATED being called that. He forced himself to smile, then he continued.

“Look, I’m interested in figuring out what’s going on around here. From the look of things, something has gone horribly wrong, and I figure you’d know better than any of these idiots.”

“I’d recommend you speak about the Eyes of the Church with more respect, lest you invoke my wrath. Even damaged and defective I still will not stand for such insults any longer.”

Henry went to continue before a panicked Johnny ran up and grabbed him from behind, holding a gauntleted hand over his mouth.

“A thousand pardons my grace!” He said to the angel. “This moron runs at the mouth far too much for his own good sometimes!” He continued.

“Don’t you Henry?” Johnny asked.

“MMPPH MPPH” Henry responded

“All I ask is that you forgive his disrespect, he doesn’t mean it, truly. We are only seeking to figure out the commotion around town. Then we shall make haste to leave on the morrow. So once again please forgive his idiocy.”

“Fine, I can accept that, for now.” Agla said, eyeing daggers at Henry. “I’m surprised you haven’t gone to the bishop for that reward he offered. The inquisition hasn’t sent out a representative yet for whatever reason, so a reward has been offered to anyone who is up to the task.

New Evidence:
1. Agla: Failure?
2. The Church: Reward for capture of the “monster”

Decisions:
1. “What is the monster?”
2. “Did it rip your wing off?”

5. “Fuck this I’m done.”

Henry broke free of Johnny’s now relaxed grasp. The skeleton had probably stopped him from talking his way into a massive amount of trouble, but his protection was still unwanted.

“Finally. The monster, could you describe it for me? Did it act like an animal, or did you feel like there was some sort of intelligence behind its actions?”

Agla took a few minutes to think of her answer. Henry paced around impatiently in the meantime, kicking at pebbles or clumps of weeds.

“It’s like nothing any of us have seen before, some sort of monstrosity made of metal, grinding gears, clockwork, springs, pistons and all other manner of artificery. The thing moves of its own regard, we’ve seen no exterior controller as of yet. Its actions don’t make any sense so far, I don’t really know what targets its attacked besides the dukes residence or the church gate. Beyond that, the thing has been growing stronger since it first appeared. One night it could barely stand, then a week later it could cause massive damage.”

“What did you mean by failure?” Henry asked.

“So you really don’t know.” Agla responded. “I mean I failed to stop it, that is all.”

“It ripped your wing off?” Henry asked.

“It PUNCHED it off.” Agla responded. “I was fortunate… my sister, she didn’t fare so well.”

“You want to get revenge on it don’t you?” Henry said.

“I will speak no longer on that subject, especially to YOU” Agla responded. “I have no business feeling such emotions, or any emotions, ideally.”

Henry wondered if that’s what she meant about being ‘defective’

“What’s the deal with the clocks?” Henry asked.

“I honestly do not know, all I can guess is that they make similar sounds to the creature, humans mystify me sometimes.”

New Evidence:
Monster: made of metal, gears and other mechanical components, seemingly acting of its own regard. It’s also been getting stronger according to Agla.
Royalty: the monster has attacked the dukes residence
The Church: the damage to the church gate was caused by the monster
Person of Interest, Agla: Her failure was failing to stop the creature, though there seems to be more to the story
Broken Clocks: Agla says that the creature makes similar noises, but destroying the clocks seems a bit extreme

“So from what you’re describing, it’s like a man made from metal, pistons, and gears, correct?” Henry asked.

“That would be an accurate description.” Agla replied. “I don’t have knowledge of the craft of artificery to tell you more than that however.”

“Is there any place in town that specializes in making components that could be combined to create something like that?” Henry asked.

“Plenty of factories and independent workshops in the craftmens quarter. There is also the cult of progress, which I assume caused this mess.” Agla continued.

“Off topic from the beast itself, but you’re not allowed to have emotions? Could you explain that to me?” Henry asked.

He knew Angels tended to not show much emotion if at all possible, but he’d never heard that they weren’t allowed to. It certainly wouldn’t have been something the church would or could enforce, meaning it would’ve had to have come from either a seraph or the grand seraph.

“It’s not so much I’m not allowed, it’s that I’m not supposed to. Meaning I’m defective.” Agla continued a flash of pain and anger crossing her face before being subsumed back beneath the emotionless mask angels normally wore. “When I saw my sister… look, I’m afraid I cannot talk about it.” Agla finished. “All I’ll say is I’ve begun to suffer from the curse of emotions, hopefully I can be cured of it. I wish to rejoin my flight as soon as I can.”
Out of the corner of his eye, Henry saw Johnny stomp off in a huff. He’d been angered by that last bit for some reason. Johnny getting angry like that was a rare event.

and I mean Gold level reward. The adventure has no hooks for the players - it doesn't block our leaving this evening, it doesn't suggest something interesting or useful and it doesn't impact any members of our little party. I'm more interested in going back out to the fringes and engaging gheists and zombies and werewolf druids. The city is just regular work and intrigue. It is comfort for Henry. ( obvious GM solution: Clockwork monster cuts off the town by rampaging at the harbor, smashing boats and docks)
- Meet with our little party and discuss: though Rosa will want to help the community and the church. Charles might want the Adventure. Johnny could either advocate "not our business and too hazardous" or "Do good because the town needs our help."

“You can’t or you won’t talk about it?” Henry said, “So much for wanting to be emotionless.”

This was a calculated risk of course, Henry had teased the angel out fairly well, he could hear Johnny skidding on his heel to try and stop him from talking further, but Henry had already gotten the desired effect.

“Very well.” Agla replied. “I suppose you just HAVE to know. We were locked into combat with the monstrosity, it wound its arm up for a punch, a large concentration of steam released from it, and it pulverized her in a single go, I’ve never seen anything like it before. It had no mana of its own, and cold dead soulless eyes. There wasn’t any malice or hatred there, like with a demon. It didn’t even enjoy its destruction, it just did it. I… I lost my composure and charged after it. It managed to destroy my wing and trap me under the rubble of a warehouse. Considering my disfigurement my archangel was disinclined to punish me. I suppose she saw it punishment enough.”

The angel clenched her fists then relaxed them.

“Is that enough for you, mortal?” She asked. Thinly veiled disgust in her voice. Henry decided he didn’t want to find out whether it was from his actions or from her own.

“My condolences to your sister.” Henry said. “If I find out something or have any further questions, where can I find you?”

“Here.” She said simply. “I’m forced to remain within the holy grounds as a mere guard while the rest of my sisters search for its hideaway.”

“It’s a shame her sister died.” Charles said.

“Angels call other members of their flock ‘sister’ as a sort of title. Like a Cathar or a Priest, although only angels are allowed to use that honorific.” Johnny said.

“Good lord could you imagine if they were all related?” Henry said. “A wife that could only provide daughters…”

“Not like that’d ever matter to you.” Johnny retorted.

“Easy pal.” Henry said.

“You done bickering like a married couple?” Rosa asked. “What are we going to do?”

“What do you mean what are we gonna do?” Henry asked. “Beyond ask about the reward?”

“Selfish, the people here need our help!” Rosa replied.

“The church is willing to PAY for that help.” Henry said. “So I suppose it’s worth a looksee… but that monster will be a pain in the ass… but…” ‘

“But?” Charles asked.

“We need to learn more about it, sides this job could pay REALLY well.” Henry said. “Made a heck of a lot during that job in New Haven.”

“Where you almost died.” Johnny replied.

“I was nowhere close to dying” Henry replied. “I had EVERYTHING under control!”

New Evidence:
Monster: The creature seems to make use of steam for at least some of its attacks,
Agla: Agla was injured and disgraced when she disobeyed orders after losing her fellow sister, charging into combat with the metal monstrosity.

Henry made his way into the Cathedral, and asked a couple of the deacons about the reward for killing or capturing the monster. He was told that the local crusader and the mayor were the ones who’d really set up the bounty, and that the bishop had insisted they wait for ‘professional’ help. Both of the deacons had been getting tired of telling every sellsword and two bit mage that passed through to go to the town hall. They had both heard the reward for bagging it was twenty gold.

TWENTY FUCKING GOLD

A LOT of options would open up if he could get a hold of that sort of wealth. A LOT of options.

He smiled to himself, and ignored Johnnys troubled stares. He knew that Johnny would NEVER condone a monster hunt, but Henry wasn’t about to just chase the thing down. If it’d been made from metal and clockwork that meant someone had to have made it right? Meaning that there would potentially still be blueprints for it. Meaning it might have weaknesses, everything had weaknesses.

His weakness for the moment seemed to be greed.

Decisions:
1. “We’re going on a monster hunt boys!”
2. “Let’s get some more information from city hall, we can probably get some food later on.”

“Let’s get some more information from city hall. We can probably get some food later on.” Henry said.

“I’m holding you to that offer you made me Henry.” Rosa said, “Least if you insist on doing this inane monster hunt.”

“I’m with the healer here, this is more danger than its worth, even for the substantial reward.” Johnny added. “Although I don’t really care about the dinner.”

“I think we should at least ask around.” Charles said. “Can’t hurt right?”
“Exactly! If it’s out of our league than we can just get back to the boat.”

“If it took down a pair of angels then it most certainly is, Henry.”

“It’s a piece of artificery, meaning most of those fancy white mana spells the angels tend to use would do jack all against it.” Henry said. “A bit of red mana, on the other hand…”

“What do you mean?” Charles asked.

“Red mana is the most unstable and destructive of the five colors.” Johnny said. “It can be used to destroy quite a bit, so he MIGHT have a point.”

“Well we can keep talking later, we’re here.” Rosa said.

The town hall was a grand building. Ironwork, brickwork, stonework, and glasswork all combined to make a truly impressive structure. The gates were undamaged, but still heavily guarded. There was an impressive gatehouse staffed with a couple of Cathars, and a Templar at ground level who was reading some official looking papers and a fairly sizeable force patrolling the place. A couple of Cathars wandered over and demanded that the group hand over any weapons they had if they wished to proceed.

Decisions:

“Give us a second!” Henry said, waving to the Cathars then heading with his group back outside the gate. This level of security was unusual of course but given the likely events of the previous few days, it was understandable. They were certainly jumpy.

“Johnny, I think we can both agree bringing you into there is an awful idea.” Henry said, bringing the skeleton close. All it would take is for the Cathars to search him for weapons and then their cover would be blown wide open.

“Agreed, I could scout us out a place to stay for the evening, unless you’ve gotten us a place on that boat we journeyed in on.”

First Decision:

“Alright, Johnny, take Charles and find us a place to stay, get like, 2 rooms I guess?” Henry said, turning to Rosa.

“I can see to myself.” Rosa said, grabbing at her satchel and drawing a coin purse. She handed Johnny a couple of silver coins and waved the man off.

“And I was all ready to be a gentleman.” Henry said, sarcastically.
Charles stifled a giggle while Rosa glared at Henry.

“Keep him out of trouble would you?” Johnny asked Rosa before running off after Charles.

“So then, lets figure out what’s going on in this clusterfuck.” Henry said, handing his weapons over and walking through the gate, Rosa handed over a small dagger. Hers was really a pointy piece of metal attached to a handle, the thing was a crude piece but would get the job done. Henry wasn’t surprised she carried something on her, roads could get dangerous.

Henry inquired about the bounty as was told that the mayor was overseeing that. As they walked the pair took the time to talk.

“Bit surprising that the Church left the commons in charge of this.” Rosa said.

“From what I understand the local bishop isn’t too pleased with this whole affair, the crusader and the mayor are pushing for it right?” Henry explained.

“I don’t understand your meaning.” Rosa said.

“The crusader probably needs to keep a good working relationship with the bishop so he can’t just go publically against him, so he gets the mayor to do it instead, keeps the whole thing from getting too sour, and keeps the ranks in order.” Henry said. “You really don’t go to the big cities too much, political shit like this happens all the time.”

“Amazing that a single priest can get so much more done.” Rosa muttered to herself.

“If shit like this didn’t happen, I couldn’t make coin on the side being a ‘problem-solver’” Henry said, chuckling.

Outside of the office were a bunch of tough looking folk, some people wearing mage robes, and a few randoms. Henry figured the mayor was conducting interviews and maybe handing out hunting permits. While the individuals would be on the hook if they caused damages, the Commons and the Church would still get an eggs on their faces, probably just a quality control measure.

“Great, competition.” Henry said under his breath. It would’ve been too easy if nobody else had taken the chance at 20 gold coins for killing a single metal man. He wasn’t too impressed by most of the people here, and didn’t recognize anyone.

He did see a small group of mercs that had a familiar symbol on their armor. The scarred hands company. Fuckers were tough and known for being unscrupulous. Quite a few powerful mages among their number as well. Henry figured they might have been running security on a boat or something and decided this was a better paying job. He didn’t know of any permanent operations they ran this close to the capital.

He noticed a couple mages as well, one male and the other female, a pair of twins. Both wore oversized hats and red mages’ robes. They looked confident as all hell, Neither of them wore any guild symbols, so Henry could only guess which they belonged to. He HAD heard of a pair of mage twins from the eastern end of the church’s domain but he couldn’t quite remember WHO they were, if that was even them.

Beyond that, a few peasants and city folk, Henry suspected they wouldn’t be given the time of day. So it was just the scarred hands and the mages who’d be any real competition for the prize. At least that were here right now, there might be more, and more would probably come as news spread. Honestly that many unsavory folk in a single city could cause more trouble than the monster, Henry made a note to quickly get out of town once the matter was resolved.

“What’s the holdup?” Henry asked one of the weak looking townsfolk.

“Some hotshot from the countryside just wandered in and the meeting just started dragging on, dunno what’s going on right now, he’s been in there for a good fifteen minutes.” The man said. “Never seen the mayor get that worked up either.”

Henry had a hunch as to who it was, but that would’ve been too stupid.

“So Rosa? Do you want to help me with this whole thing or what? I’ll cut you a fair share… say… 10%?” Henry asked, turning to his companion. “I think your healing is going to come in handy.”

“Make it twenty percent.” Rosa replied. “I ain’t dumb, this is life threatening work.”

“I might be a member of the church Henry but I’m no moron and I’m not one for being taken advantage of!”

“In that case, I’ll give you twenty five percent for suprising me!”

“I KNEW YOU’D TRY TO UNDERCUT ME-… what?” She asked, dropping her anger in a heartbeat.

“HAHAHA!” Henry said, sitting onto a bench that had been left out. “Got you good! But I’m serious, If I’m gonna hire a mage I want to make sure they don’t screw up, so don’t screw up alright?”

“Well for that sort of money you can count me in!” Rosa said, a smiling crossing her face.

To be honest twenty gold was a lot, even if he only got 15 of it it’d be worth it. Henry was about to ask what she could possibly use the money for when a man slammed the door of the mayor’s office open and strolled out.

It was Flame-Blade Larry.

Henry drew the man into a hug for a few moments before the two of them sat down, laughing like a couple of old friends. Henry didn’t trust the man completely, but he was a simple sort. Meaning he probably wasn’t smart enough to come up with ways to backstab him.

“Why else? Just got a license, somehow. Asshole in the office there asked me WAAAAY too many questions. Of course I’m going to be careful, and yes I know not to damage city property. I’m not a moron.” He said.

Uh huh. Moron or no he was a good fighter, at least from what Johnny had told him.

Rosa just sat to the side. Henry figured she didn’t like being left out. Everyone else in the room was gawking or trying to ignore the two of them. The line had gotten a bit shorter over the course of their chat.

“Are you going to let me have a say?” Rosa asked.

“Nope!” Henry said.

“What this guy said, and yeah I want to work together. You’re as good a boss as any I figure.” Larry responded. “Where you guys staying anyways?”

“Some inn Johnny’s gonna find, we’re gonna meet back at the docks then head there, probably get some food after that. You in?”

“Hell yeah!” Larry said.

“I suppose I’ll just have to tolerate your company.” Rosa said, sighing.

“Safety in numbers, as for your pay Larry?”

“Whatever you think is fair bud, I honestly don’t have the first clue where to look…”

“You were just hoping it’d stumble in front of you?!” Rosa asked.

Basically, we should divide the remaining ten gold so that Johnny gets three, since he's "already being paid" for helping us, Rosa, and Charles get back to Celeste, and Charles gets two as an "allowance". That way, we look like we're paying our partners fairly, but in reality we get the lion's share.

Unless, of course, anyone really does want to split it this way. That's cool too.

Some thoughts, that Henry might have.

> Someone has stitched together a monster from metal the way we might stitch together a corpse. Much as how a clock moves it's metaphorical "hands", someone must be able to do that to move the monster.

> If there is no magical energy powering it, there must be some other kind. Whatever powers clocks for instance.

> Steam means heat, without magic that means fuel such as oil or coal. Also water. Somehow, boiling the machine provides it energy.

We need to find someone who makes clocks, and a blacksmith or architect who deals with pipes/aqueducts.

If we can't find them, we have suspects slash leads.

Alternatively we need to find out where they could get fuel for their metal corpse. Presumably they would need a constant supply. As well the amount of time it could last before refueling must be limited, so it can only be so far away from the city. We can get a rough idea by estimating how much time it spent attacking the various places before retreating - note that it might be increasing the range it can move as it improves.

“Twenty percent work for you Larry?” Henry asked.

“How is that exactly?” Larry said. “I’m not the best with numbers.”

“Five gold, same as I’m getting.” Rosa said. “I don’t want to be rude but…” Rosa started.

“Now now, just cause he’s a little impaired math wise doesn’t mean he isn’t a useful addition to our little team, man’s a good swordman.”

“Darn tootin.” Larry said.

“Johnny is getting five as well for his help, figured that’s fair.” Henry said. “As for Charles, he’s my apprentice so no pay for him.”

“You should pay him something.” Rosa said.

“Room and board.” Henry replied.

“Right so we’ll come up with a plan in a bit, someone has to have stitched this mechanical monster together. Meaning that someone is responsible for it, and someone might still be controlling it.” Henry said.

The thing reminded him of the stitching necromancers that lived along the coastal provinces. He knew the thing didn’t have any mana of its own, meaning it wasn’t a living creature, and thus potentially couldn’t be killed like a living creature could. Which would be an added complication. If it was like a stitched creation, it might have control words or a way to destroy it. He’d have to figure out where and how it had been made.

The other thing was fuel or food, did it even require any? Or was the process that had created it self-sustaining or even expansive?

His thoughts on the matter were interrupted as he saw that the line had shrunk to the point they were next up.

Henry waited a bit longer. One more group of glum looking peasants came out of the office, Henry figured they’d been turned down. Less competition at the very least. For once stupid shit like that had helped him.

Henry and Rosa entered into the small well-lit office. There were a couple sliding glasswork doors which led out to a balcony. Dark wood furniture of all sorts, as well as a large collection of what appeared to be snowglobes of the various cities of the world. Avignon, Celeste, Randfort, and Mirgras all featured prominently, each in their own world of water and fake snow. There were a bunch of smaller cities with smaller snowglobes. Finally, Grutzberg took the central spot along the display. The snowglobe was much larger than any of the others, the mockup of Grutzberg’s central clocktower rising above all the other fake buildings in the display.

What an odd hobby.

“You’re the last ones for today I assume?” The mayor asked. “My name is Edward, I’m the duly elected mayor of the commons for Grutzberg, and the one in charge of giving permission to perform this little monster hunt. You don’t look like a peasant, and you’re a healer, so perhaps you actually have some experience?”

“I’ve made a living solving all sorts of problems for people, this is just another problem that needs solving.” Henry said, leaning back comfortably.

He listed off his experience as a mage, and his ability to destroy the monster that had been causing trouble, doing a fairly good job of it.

The mayor nodded, but didn’t seem completely impressed.

“Lastly, I worked with the inquisition recently to solve a problem in the city of new Haven to the northwest.”

“Do you have any proof?” The mayor asked.

“I can vouch for him, he did an impressive job too.” Rosa said.

Henry raised an eyebrow, she hadn’t been that easy with the compliments in the past, she must’ve really wanted the payday here.

“Well if that’s the case I’m going to grant both of you a license, with a few stipulations.” Edward said. “First off, these aren’t a license to do whatever you want, just to hunt the thing. You still have to obey any rules and laws we have in our city. Secondly, the church still has final authority here, so they’ll be the ones issuing payment. Lastly, the reward is twenty gold to bring the monster down, no extra reward for bringing it in alive but you need to make sure the corpse is still recognizable. If its obliterated we can’t pay you, just to make sure that nobody tries to just bring in a pile of junk. The reward for bringing in Ophelia Von Krutz is five gold, this is alive only. The church wishes to question her for her involvement in the Duke’s death, I realize it isn’t entirely related, but I figure skilled individuals like yourselves might take an interest. This payment comes from our offices here.”

The Mayor handed each of them a couple uninteresting slips of paper with the symbol of the church on them. They had an odd texture which Henry recognized as rule paper. It was something the church specifically made for official documents and the like, and was waterproof, heat resistant, and magically enchanted. Bit of an odd touch but they wouldn’t be destroyed easily during the investigation.”

“Oh and before I forget.” The mayor said, slipping them a wanted poster with a photograph of a woman who seemed to be standing with a group of people, all in front of the clocktower. She had her hair in a bun and wore a fancy looking dress.

“This was recently taken and is an accurate depiction of the woman. I know she had some interactions with the duke so that would be the best place to start…” The mayor said. “However the duchess hasn’t been speaking to anyone recently due to her husband’s death. It’s the main reason why the investigation hasn’t gone anywhere.”

“Where did it first appear?” Henry asked.

“The first appearance was in the warehouse district best we know, it headed out into the farmland and we lost track of it. At that point the angels didn’t view it as a big enough threat to go after.”

“Any other sightings after that?”

“It attacked the duke’s residence until it was stopped by the combined actions of angels and Cathars, then a few nights later it attacked the church gates, dealing quite a bit of damage, two deaths, and it even injured an angel in the escape attempt from what I hear.”

“How long did it spend out in the open.”

“Best I can tell the longest it’s been out in the open is three and a half hours, during its attack on the holy grounds, this was four days ago of course, and it hasn’t been sighted out in the open since. But it has been screeching..” The mayor said, clutching his head. “We’ve had to quell a few riots caused by the damned thing, and luckily it doesn’t seem to be too bad.”

“How many attacks have there been?” Henry asked.

“Three, one on the dukes residence, one on the gate to the holy grounds, and a third at the city gates.”

“How could something of its size be made?” Henry asked.

“We don’t know anything about how the materials were acquired, in fact we don’t even know where it came from as of yet, we just know it showed up around the same time the Duke was reported missing.”

“Missing?” Henry asked. “But I thought he was dead.”

“No body has been recovered yet, but it’s safe to assume he’s been murdered. It’s been a little over a week with no sightings of the man, and no group has tried to acquire coin for his release. The church steadfastly denies any involvement as well. The man flipped to the church’s side the second things began to move in the capital.”

“Is the thing getting stronger?” Henry asked.

“I’m uncertain, but it’s a possibility. We’re trying to avoid causing panic you see. The first night it was fairly weak, barely able to move, clumsy, or at least recording to the reports I’ve compiled. I’ve sort of treated this as a personal project. Seeing as it affects so many people. It’s certainly become more dangerous, I cannot believe it managed to take down two angels.”

“Did the duke have any investments in Grutzberg? Things like clockwork machinery or steam engines?” Henry asked. “Like for boats and what not.”

“I hope you’re not implying…” The mayor said.

“No, I merely want to know if he had any connections that could be responsible for the assault on his residence.”
>>
>>2645331

“Von Kurtz.” The mayor muttered.

“That name again…” Henry said. “Who is she?”

“From what I understand she was a genius, and an inventor in some capacity. She’d been commissioned to work on the central clock tower in some capacity. It was owned by Duke Bradfords’ family for a couple generations now.”

“I suppose that’s why you want to question her.’

“Exactly. She was spotted in the city about three days ago, and hasn’t been seen since. As you can understand this is a bit odd. But leads me to believe she isn’t directly involved in the murder.”

“She didn’t take the chance to run for it.” Henry added. “So I see the point.”

“I don’t know much about the woman myself, but the Duchess might have more information, if you can get her in a talking mood. She’s a bit… inconsolable from what I understand.”

“Do you think she’s involved with the monster?” Henry asked.

“I cannot rule out the possibility” The mayor replied.

Rosa yawned, the woman looked like she was about to fall asleep. This is why HE was in charge, he actually paid attention.

New Evidence:
1. Monster: The creature first appeared in the warehouse district of the city, two days later it attacked the dukes residence until it was repelled by Cathars and Angels. Then two days after that it attacked the holy grounds’ gate. All attacks were unsuccessful but resulted in several deaths.
2. Monster: The creature showed up around the same time the duke Disapeared
3. The Duke: The duke’s body was never recovered, the city government only assumes he’s dead.
4. Von Kurtz: The woman was working for the duke on his clocktower, and potentially other things as well.
5. The Duchess: The woman might be our best lead for the case, but the woman is inconsolable right now, and she’s under heavy guard in her estate inside the city.

“Was the monster attacking the duke’s residence or just trying to get inside?” Henry asked.

“Does it actually matter? It resulted in four people being killed and about a dozen injuries.”

“So you’re unsure?” Henry asked.

“I wouldn’t know.” The mayor admitted. “It tore down the gate and went on a rampage inside the place.”

“Do you know of any witnesses or first responders to the attacks who might be willing to talk to me?” Henry asked.

“I have some ideas, but I don’t know anyone myself. Some of the Cathars might be willing to talk about it, and the guards at the dukes mansion as well. As for townsfolk, nobody really is talking on that front, everyone’s too frightened by the damned thing.”

“And the clocks being smashed?”

“The damned thing has been driving people crazy with its screeching, I don’t know exactly how it works but some townsfolk began to go mad after listening to clocks going off. It’s kind of a problem as we haven’t been able to shut down the clock tower itself. The damned thing is magically sealed. I don’t know exactly what the cause is but its serious now. Honestly the insanity might become a bigger problem than the monster. Some people can’t stand the noise anymore, it seems to be affecting a sizeable minority of people.”

“What?” Henry asked.

“The healers abbey is a tad overburdened from what I understand, they’re trying to understand the cause of the mental issues among the commoners. I’m not magically inclined myself so I can’t really tell you, I just know it hurts to listen to.”

New Evidence:
1. Smashed Clocks: It seems there was more to the clocks being smashed then you thought, the monster seems to be causing people to go beserk upon hearing clocks going off.
2. The Clocktower: the clocktower is still functioning and has been sealed off via some kind of magical ward.
3. Witnesses: Some of the Cathars or mansion guards might be willing to talk, but the mayor isn’t certain who’d be up to it
4. Insanity: It seems the Church is having trouble keeping the insanity caused by the monster in check.

As they left the Office, Henry turned to Rosa.

“Do you think you could heal mental damage with your magic?”

“It doesn’t exactly work like that… at least if the damage becomes serious. At that point it becomes more about restoring function to the person then actual… ‘healing.’”

“That didn’t answer my question.”

“I can try, but I don’t know, I generally don’t handle the insane.” Rosa said. “And sometimes there is nothing to be done, I’m not a miracle worker.”

“You literally heal on behalf of the church.” Larry said, joining the three of them. “I don’t see how you aren’t.”

“A physical wound is easy enough to heal, just repair the damage, the mind is a bit more complex I’m afraid.” Rosa said.

Making their way to the vast dockyards of the city, it took about thirty minutes for them to find Johnny and Charles. Henry cursed himself for not being able to use his contract to contact the skeleton, but that was out of the question with his companions around.

Johnny had some choice words for him about bringing on more people into their business, but he wanted the money, and it’d mean they’d be able to support themselves that much longer.

Eventually, Johnny relented, or rather gave up trying to fight him, he knew Henry wouldn’t stop arguing.

Charles made small talk with Rosa and Larry in the meantime. The boy seemed to be taking all of these events in stride, it just seemed like one big adventure to him.

Henry and the group made their way to the inn Johnny had found, it was located on a side road near one of the city’s many gates. It gave them a good view of the clock tower however. The building loomed large over the blanket of mist that had begun to roll in from the river.

On the way over he stopped to grab some cotton as well as some wax. Enough for everyone to plug their ears with if it came down to it. He really hoped the lack of hearing wouldn’t become a problem though.

The five of them sat around a table, exchanging dumb stories and tidbits from their lives. Henry smiled, he’d pulled a decent enough team together on such short notice, he was a real genius.

The meal was a chowder with all sorts of fish in it, plus the bread, butter, and the wine he’d managed to track down. He’d managed to get the shop keep as he was heading home for the night. The inn they were at didn’t serve alcohol, but he’d managed to convince the owner to let them enjoy what they’d brought.

“I just wanted to pray a bit and thank the lord for this meal.” Rosa said, holding her hands to her head in prayer. Larry and Johnny quickly joined in, while Charles looked expectantly at Henry.

“You can if you want Charles, I won’t judge.” Henry said, leaning back in his chair and waiting for the others to finish.

Charles joined in, before saying to the others. “We should all appreciate this meal, if the monster is as bad as Henry said, any of us might not enjoy another.”

Larry and Rosa exchanged glances at each other nervously.

“Amen.” Johnny said. “If either of you wishes to leave the group and find less dangerous employment, consider this your last chance. I won’t shed tears if you choose to proceed.”

Henry scoffed, he wouldn’t because he couldn’t. Plus, how dare he try to ruin the group HE’D set up?! All because he’d feel guilty over a couple of people dying here or there. People they’d both known about a week on top of that. He didn’t get it.

“I’m staying, I need the money.” Rosa said. “This will get me far more than I would via healing, and it’d help a lot more people a lot more quickly.”

“I just want to kill the damned thing.” Larry said, smiling, “If people get helped, even better.”

Johnny sighed. “Don’t come crying to me then.”

“Don’t eat so fast Charles!” Henry said. “it ain’t healthy.”

“But what if it’s not here tomorrow?!” Charles asked.

Henry laughed to himself for a while, and kindly explained to Charles that it didn’t work like that.

“Also, you’re supposed to save some bread for when the bowl’s finished, that way you can wipe up and eat whatever’s left of the butter.” Henry said.

“What if you have a lot of butter left?” Rosa asked.

“Wasn’t asking you, Rosa.” Henry said.

Henry continued to enjoy his meal, it was really fresh, pulled right from the river, and the nearby lakes.

“So Larry, why do you care so much about killing this thing?” Henry asked.

“Because it’s big and mean and it’s there!?” Larry replied. “Why else would you go to the trouble of killing something like that? I’d get to be a damned hero!” He said.

Johnny sighed quietly and shook his head at that. Henry did a double take, was this guy just a moron or was he playing him?

“Simply slaying a monster a doesn’t make you a hero.” Rosa said.

“Well no, I’d need to rescue a fair maiden as well, it’s a shame this creature doesn’t seem the type to accost with them.” Larry said.

“Uh huh.” Henry said. “Look, the thing is big, its mean, and it’s made out of metal and clockwork, and is seemingly powered by some sort of steam mechanism. Basically, this means black and white mana aren’t going to do jack shit to it. Best Rosa here can do is attempt to ward the thing but that might not even work if it doesn’t have an internal mana supply.”

“So its not magical at all?” Charles asked.

“It might be enchanted in some capacity. It does seem to be causing insanity among the townfolk with the noise it generates, but I’d need to get a closer look at the damned thing to be sure.” Henry said. “I like living so I’m staying the fuck away from it.”

“Another thing, apparently it lets out a gush of steam before delivering a killing blow, I spoke to an injured angel about it. So if you see something like that, get the fuck away from it. That includes you Johnny.” Henry continued.

“I get the idea.” Johnny said.

“As for who built the thing… we need to figure that out” Henry asked, turning to Rosa, who glared at him. “We’re also being paid to track down Ophelia Von Kurtz and apprehend her. I was given this poster here.” Henry said, throwing the copy of the photograph onto the table. “We find her and bring her in alive, we all make an easy five gold together.”

“What if she made the thing?” Charles asked.

“That’d be an added bonus.” Henry said. “Though she’s the prime suspect, I really don’t see any of the cult of progress boys making something like this. Of all the groups in this city they probably have the fewest skeletons in their closet, that or the riders guild.”

“I disagree.” Rosa said. “They probably just lost control of one of their vile creations.”

“Vile creations? Like a factory machine?” Henry said, jokingly.

“Got beef with em?” Larry asked.

“I find them distasteful due to a variety of reasons I won’t get into.” Rosa said. “Regardless, we should try to track down who created it.”

Decisions:
1. Keep talking (write in)
2. “We should focus on searching the warehouse district tomorrow”
3. “We should try to contact the baroness tomorrow”
4. “We should perform a stakeout for the thing.”

6. We should…. (write in)

“Does that mean you prefer the undead to their vile creations or vice versa?” Henry asked. “Because their machines smell a hell of a lot better than undead do, even with the smoke and fumes.”

“That’s like asking me what type of disease is my favorite.” Rosa replied, “And would you quit it?”

“He doesn’t ever stop I’m afraid.” Johnny said. “Best you can do is try to block him out.”

“I’m going to try and purchase some information tomorrow, I know a guy.”

“Of course you do.” Rosa said.

“Rosa, can I trust you to watch over Charles?” Johnny asked. “Only for the duration of our visit to Henry’s… ‘friend.’”

“Why the heck do you need to do that?” Henry asked.

“I don’t think any of us should head out in groups smaller than two, safest practice.” Johnny replied.

“Fair point.” Henry admitted. “Beyond that, we should try to contact the baroness tomorrow. Maybe we can get her talking. Would certainly be a break in this little case.”

“I have a question.” Charles said. “How could the thing be getting into and out of the city?”

“For one there is the river, it doesn’t need to breath. It can just head thru a canel and into the city. Secondly, no mana supply, meaning nothing for the angelic wards to counter.” Henry explained. “Kind of interesting actually. Never thought that NOT having any connection to mana to speak of could be an advantage.”

“Could a human do it?” Charles asked.

“It’d probably kill them, or they wouldn’t be born in the first place.” Henry said. “Easiest I can explain it.”

“Did the baron keep any notes or records on his dealings with this Von Kurtz?” Johnny asked.

“Excellent question, I honestly know nothing about the woman. Never concerned myself with this cities politics.” Henry said. “I know, surprising I don’t have EVERY answer. I’m only ALMOST perfect.” He said, joking.

“So we should continue in the morning?” Larry asked.

Henry went to respond but was cut off by an ear splitting screech.

Henry casted close mind, quickly warding himself from whatever the fuck was going on. Larry seemed to be in a good deal of distress. Charles was clutching at his ears and was doubled over. While Rosa was curled up in the fetal position on the ground. Johnny was startled but unaffected, another perk of being undead.

(-0.5 blue mana)

It sounded like… like gears grinding and a VERY loud bell going off. Like springs coiling and unwinding… but his protection held. He couldn’t imagine what everyone else must’ve been going through.

(-5 Sanity)

Henry ran to the second floor and to an outer balcony to get a better view of what was going on. He could hear what seemed to be screaming coming from the direction of the harbor, and a long trail of black smoke emanating into the sky. The screeching stopped a moment later, Henry could hear people shouting in the streets below, it seemed another riot was beginning to form. Just fucking fantastic.

A moment later a group of four angels streaked by overhead, holy weapons drawn and shining with white mana. Towards the harbor.

Henry headed back inside, there were a few people scattered on the ground in various states of shock and pain. But everyone had begun to recover now that the noise had stopped.

Larry was already up and had his weapon drawn, the engraved sword that held some sort of magical enchantment. Rosa and Charles were still down. Rosa was shivering on the ground and Charles looked a little out of it but was otherwise fine. Fucking fantastic.

“Are we going after this fucker?” Larry asked. The man seemed a bit over excited but otherwise normal. He then noticed Rosa was down and went to help her. At that point the woman sat up and waved Larry off.

“I’m fine… I think.” Rosa said, clutching her head. “I just… I just need a minute.”

“We need to move if we’re going to make it to the harbor, streets might get bad soon.” Johnny said, peaking out of a window.

Henry felt the spell ware off, close mind was fantastic but short lived.

Decisions:
1. Head out to the harbor (list who you’re taking with you.)
2. Stay put, wait till morning (you might lose out on evidence)

Johnny. Tell Larry not to worry just yet, we're just picking up evidence, not fighting it just yet. Pass out the cotton and wax in case it starts shrieking again.

“Larry, I need you to stay put.” Henry said.

“But that thing is in the harbor!” Larry said. “I want to go-“

“It’s either been slain by the angels or its already left.” Henry said. “Me and Johnny are going to go do some recon, figure out whats what. Can you watch over the women and children?” Henry asked.

Larry paced around for a moment, the man had become agitated. “Fine, just this once.” Larry said. “But if you see it don’t attack it, I want to be the one who kills the damned thing.”

Henry passed out cotton and wax to the group, including Johnny to keep up appearances. Rosa immediately applied hers. Larry and Charles pocketed it.

“Look Charles.” Henry said, crouching down to eye level. “Me and Johnny are going to head out, just be careful. Some people might’ve been driven mad by all of this, could become a problem.” Henry said.

“Trusting ya Larry.” Henry said. Larry halfheartedly gave a thumbs up.

Decisions:
1. Head along the main road
2. Take side streets
3. Head outside the gates and try to work your way around town

Johnny and Henry slowly worked their way through the city streets, the rioting wasn’t too bad for the most part, and the city had the upper hand. Order would be restored in a matter of hours Henry figured. Still the road wasn’t exactly ‘safe’ they had to duck around a few homeless folk, driven raving mad from the noise. Henry didn’t usually deal in such insanity, but he knew its effects well enough.

As they approached the harbor, they came upon a downed Cathar laying in the streets, bloodied but still alive.

Decisions:’
1. Leave the man, you don’t have time, and this could be a trap
2. Get Johnny to pick him up and get him to safety.
3. Help him yourself, if you want something done right

this will cause Johnny to leave the group and leave Henry to himself, are you sure you want to do this?

I'm also unable to post due to a power outage caused by a fallen tree near my house. I'm posting this from a starbucks before I head back home for sleep.

Have johnny circle the downed cathar, that should draw out any ambushers.
Then check on his injuries, if only midly injured drag his ass somewhere out of the way and leave him.
If he is injured worse, do a patch job on him and then drag him somewhere safe.
