You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and it's honestly getting a little tiresome.

A new faction rises to attack the Seireitei, convinced that their old grudge against Captains and nobles long dead justifies the immense damage they aim to do. Their assault blunts against your counterattack, and while the other Captains of the Gotei 13 deal with the threat to the living world, or to the Soul Society, or whatever it happens to be this time you carve out a path towards the enemy's mastermind. At each step even more psychotic opponents present themselves, so blind to their own flaws that they can sincerely claim that any evil they commit is actually “good” and so convinced of their own moral and technical supremacy that defeat isn't an outcome they even consider.

And so each time they seem shocked that they could possibly have lost, they beg for your mercy despite having no room for it in their own hearts. Sometimes you give it to them, but only when your moral code demands it. The same is true when you refuse it.

It's hard to tell for sure, since there have been many notable exceptions to the apparent pattern, but as time has passed the grudges seem to be getting older, the opponents more powerful, and their grasp on sanity more tenuous.

Where does it end?

“I want you to let me handle this,” you insist to Yoruichi as you face down at least one enemy, this time a Sternritter who wears the same glasses as every Nazi in every movie about Nazis ever made. Which funny enough seems to fit the situation.

The other possible enemy is an arrancar wearing the face of a former Commando in your Division, Ichinose Maki. You can't be sure whether he has Ichinose's memories and personality, whether those aspects are the dominant ones right now, or whether he might at some point become your enemy. But he does seem to recognize you, and he's apparently been fighting alongside Ichigo, Abarai, and Ishida, so there's every possibility that the best-case scenario is the one you're dealing with here.

But looks can be deceiving. That's why you want to find out for yourself what precisely this man is, and why your sensibilities as a Captain oblige you to keep your wife out of this.

And it's likely because she's a Captain herself that Yoruichi seems to understand.

“I'll leave it in your hands then,” Yoruichi nods calmly, taking a step back. “When you've determined things to your satisfaction be sure to let me know.”

“Thanks,” you reply. “I appreciate it.”

“Surely you...”

“Shhh...” you shush the confused Sternritter, raising a finger to your lips.

“What are you...”

“Shhhh...”

“Are you shushing...”

“Shhhh...”

When he finally stops trying to speak over you, you turn to the arrancar whose face you recognize.

“You know where we stand,” you insist sternly.

He nods in apparent understanding. “You need to know a few... details. About my supposed resurrection.”

“Well, you know what must be done,” you nod, a look of quiet resignation crossing the arrancar's face.

“Ninth Division's secret handshake. Go.”

The look of resignation evaporates into confusion. “But... that's not something that exists. There's not a 'secret handshake', you'd never allow such a thing!”

“Don't tell me you forgot the secret handshake!” you sigh, reaching for Tenkotsuki's hilt. “You don't remember pretty quick I won't be able to trust you.”

“Captain!” the arrancar insists more forcefully this time. “There isn't a handshake!”

“Now you're just disappointing me,” you smirk. “You give it some thought and it'll come to you... that is, if there's any Ichinose left in there.”

After a moment of panic, it seems that the arrancar realizes something. In an instant he rushes you, bringing the edge of his zanpakuto down against Tenkotsuki, now freed from her sheath.

“Still disappointed?” he grins, straining against your guard.

Your response is a quick knee to the gut that sends him tumbling back several steps.

“A little,” you confess. “I expected the arrancar that ate my former Commando to be a little faster.”

“How!?” he demands, surprised at how quickly you discerned the truth.

“You did it with that left arm of yours,” you explain, pointing to the offending limb. “Didn't you? Its balance and the way you move it... you may have it well-disguised, but it still moves like a bundle of tentacles mimicking an arm.”

The arrancar chuckles to himself. “Damn, you're even better than Ichinose's memories led me to believe, to discern so much from a single blow.”

“What do I call you?” you ask.

“Call me Aaroniero,” he replies. “As you've likely guessed I only have the memories of your former Commando.”

“And his zanpakuto,” you point out, glancing at Nijigasume in his hand. “You can use it?”

“I can,” he nods.

“May I speak with its spirit?” you ask.

“I'm not sure?” Aaroniero admits. “He's agreed to work for me for now, but I don't think he likes it... and we're not on the best of terms beyond that basic functional level.”

“Can I try anyway?” you persist. “Nijigasume's condition is the best possible indicator of how I should proceed.”

“Can you?” Aaroniero asks bluntly. “I mean, that's not how it works. Not usually, at least.”

“Maybe,” you hear Monkey's voice from Renji's sword.

You reach out, even as Renji is demanding that Zabimaru explain themselves, and grasp Nijigasume's hilt.

“Hello, Captain.”

“Hello, Nijigasume,” you greet the zanpakuto, whose spirit has been pulled into your own inner world where Tenkotsuki and Rosa stand vigilantly with their own blades crossed on a mote of light, which floats in the air in front of you.

“It's been some time.”

“We have never met,” Nijigasume clarifies.

“True,” you admit, “but we did used to fight side by side.”

“This is nice,” the zanpakuto spirit muses, apparently taking in the scenery around you. “Full of contradiction and dynamism. My former wielder's inner world was simply bright light.”

“That'd give me a headache,” you admit. “So, you know why you're here I take it?”

“Aaroniero Arruruerie is not lying,” Nijigasume explains, “when he says we have come to something of an agreement. His mentality is heavily shaped by the traces of Ichinose Maki's presence. However it would be a mistake to believe the two to be identical.”

“How so?”

“All menos are a collection of souls which compose their essence,” Nijigasume points out. “Usually resulting in one personality becoming dominant. In Aaroniero's case three personalities are vying for control: two that existed before, and Ichinose Maki.”

“So you're saying he has a bad case of multiple personality disorder,” you summarize.

The comment earns you a raised eyebrow from Tenkotsuki and an eyeroll from Rosa. But it seems that Nijigasume agrees with your assessment. “I believe that is the case, yes. Only his component parts aren't quite so amicable among themselves.”

“All I need to know for now,” you admit somewhat more sternly, “is whether he can be trusted in his present state.”

“For the time,” Nijigasume tells you. “My abilities can counteract any resurgence in the hollow aspects of his being, as they seem weakened by natural light. But should the balance shift for whatever reason...”

“Then you'll lose control of the situation,” you realize. “And should that happen?”

“At best I can force Aaroniero into acquiescence,” Nijigasume insists. “But should the situation become unmanageable I will need you to remove me from his possession... even if it destroys me, such an outcome would be preferable to corruption and eventual loss of self.”

“There may be a permanent solution,” you sigh, “but I don't know what it is, nor do I have the time. So I'm just going to have to trust your assessment of him for now. Is that acceptable?”

“I agree with your decision,” Nijigasume tells you, “but ultimately the decision is yours.”

“I'm going now.”

“You'd best,” you agree. “Good luck, Nijigasume. And it bodes well to see you in good shape.”

Then you find yourself back on the outside, only a moment having passed since you grabbed Nijigasume's hilt.

“Captain?” Aaroniero asks you, staring in surprise. “What did you just do?”

“I spoke with Nijigasume,” you explain. “We're in agreement.”

“May I ask...” Aaroniero begins, only for the Sternritter to interrupt.

“You are still ignoring me,” he growls. “Though I always try to be careful not to act too condescending towards my inferiors, there is a limit to my patience.”

“I had other business to attend to,” you answer. “Do not make the mistake of assuming that you are the sole point of my focus.”

The sternritter scoffs. “Why? Do you believe yourself above noticing me?”

“No,” you reply with a stern glare. “Though I do find your self-righteousness and arrogance tiresome.”

“Is it arrogance to believe one is above one's enemies if I is actually true?” he asks.

“Only if one's supposed supremacy has yet to be proven,” you counter. “When one only believes in one's supremacy without any evidence to support the notion it becomes arrogance.”

“And if one is actually righteous?”

“That isn't for you to decide yourself,” you point out. “Thus, self-righteousness.”

If we manage to save him by killing or otherwise supressing the other two souls, he'll essentially be maki, turned into an arrancar, close enough to the regular ol' way every other arrancar formed.
In other words, maki is alive as an arrancar!

Of course, there's always the weird issues that come with being killed and coming back with your memories intact.
In maki's case though, he has practically all of his memories, and his death and rebirth weren't exactly parted by a great deal of time. It's not like rosa or okita's cases where they properly reincarnated.

>>2614564
It occurs to you that you've never done this trick before, but it should be possible to use utsusemi as a feint. In fact you're amazed nobody has ever thought of that, so far as you know. Maybe there's a drawback to it that only you happen to not know about?

Maybe it's time to find out?

“A frontal attack?” the sternritter almost laughs at you... that is, until your afterimage passes clealy through his body.

“Wait...”

He never gets to finish the thought, as Tenkotsuki's edge cuts deeply across his back, biting into his blut and drawing through his flesh right down to the bone. But it doesn't kill him outright, the strength of his passive defenses managed that much at least.

“Impressive,” he admits, wheeling around to slash at you with his own sword. It glances off Tenkotsuki's edge... and you notice immediately that something is wrong. The crisp outlines of her blade begin to waver, like a heat shimmer in midsummer... is the metal losing cohesion? No, it must be that the reishi bonds are being forcibly broken down.

This man's basic quincy skills are remarkably powerful for such a thing to be possible.

In an instant you dart to his side and leave a thin gash across his upper arm. Glancing down you see that the reishi in your sword has returned to its normal state.

Very interesting indeed.

“Ōkasen!” you shout, and to your slight surprise he sidesteps.

That... and the stone on his hand... no, which makes up his hand...

“I get it,” you realize aloud. “You missed your opportunity, sternritter. Your focus slipped, and gave me a clear indication of what needed to be done.”

“Danmaku Tenyō.”
>1/2
>>
>>2614677
“Your skills are extraordinary,” you admit, generating hundreds and hundreds of reiatsu projectiles that fill the air around you like a thick cloud of giant fireflies. “However like many skills your reishi domination requires concentration and time to perform. Against a living being, particularly a powerful one with many conflicting qualities to their reishi, it leaves you open to a counterattack.”

“That interrupts your technique and resets any progress you may have made in stealing reishi.”

For the first time since you laid eyes on him your opponent's expression changes from smug self-satisfaction, betraying a new emotion: anger.

“How dare...” he begins.

“I could ask the same,” you interrupt.

You're not sure why, but you don't feel much of an appetite for killing at the moment. And so you decide not to, but instead to deliver the same dubious 'mercy' you did to PePe not too long ago.

It starts with a shunpo, supported by a few irregular blows from your Daiichi Tenyō which pelt the sternritter from various angles. He parries your blade only to take a blast to the back, then a kick to the ribs that sends him staggering.

“Damn you!” he spits, lobbing a stream of arrows from the guard of his sword. You dodge them of course, and pelt him with more reiatsu blasts for his trouble.

Finally, he seems to drop his guard for just a moment... and in that moment you draw a trio of anken.

The blades Yoruichi insists on furnishing you with fly true, and the sternritter raises his sword to bat them down.

“Nope,” you insist quietly, fingers grasping the blade tightly above his shoulder.

He realizes too late the setup you've placed him in: the slow anken arrive at the same time as the tip of your sword which pierces his chest, but you also take an elbow to the ribs as the sternritter manages to escape with the three knives protruding from his body and a deep penetrating wound near his left lung.

“You're making this harder on yourself than it needs to be,” you sigh, snapping the blade of his reishi weapon between your fingertips and tossing the chunks aside. “If you'd just taken those hits where you were supposed to you wouldn't be in such pain.”

“I've had enough of your nonsense, you... you half-bred mongrel!” he hisses. “How dare you raise your sword to one of your betters?”

“Same damn story,” you sigh wearily. “Every time you sternritter act surprised when it turns out you can be beaten, when someone with a diverse set of skills and the raw power to apply them finds a way to win. Like it offends you that you're not personally the strongest beings in the universe.”

“I'll give you this one last chance to cooperate,” you conclude. “Bambietta, Candice, Liltotto... they all chose to change themselves. Hell, even BG9 has relaxed a little... and we cut his damn head off.”

“It doesn't have to be like this.”

Instead of relenting, your opponent begins stripping away reishi from your surroundings. Not from the people or their weapons, but unattended matter. He's not even trying to use his ability to its fullest.

“Bambietta and the others are nothing more than blood-traitors and cowards,” the sternritter sneers. “Weaklings who had a convenient change of heart when they got themselves beaten rather than stay true to the mission we Sternritter have been granted. The worst sort of sinners whose redemption will only come at the edge of a sword.”

He fires a mass of reishi at you, which splits and forms a cage around you... a cage that seems to block your senses despite being open between its glowing beams.

"Raze, Kobara no Tachi."

You effortlessly slice away the foolish sternritter's technique, literally incinerating it in an instant before the whole thing collapses.

"Did you really thing such a crass technique could hold me?" you glare at him. "No subtlety at all? Did you really think that you could beat me in a battle of brute force?"

"I can't decide which prospect is more insulting."

"That sword..." he realizes, his features twisting with rage. "That sword!"

"Blends hollow power and quincy technique, yes," you nod.

"Blasphemy," he insists, a deranged look in his eye. "Blasphemy, blasphemy, blasphemy! You will not blaspheme!"

It seems like he finally snapped... or else he's stopped hiding the fact that he snapped a long time ago.

"I'll kill you," he insists. "In sight of whatever gods exist in this mad world I swear that I'll kill you, that I'll rid the world of your blasphemous form."

He swiftly generates a new reishi weapon from the stone at his feet, his specialty having apparently failed him. He uses it to charge you... painfully slow and direct to your eyes. Part of you still expects some trick when you counter-charge, plunging Tenkotsuki's blade into his heart.

But there was no trick.

Instead the sternritter falls dead at your feet, his tricks as exhausted as his body. Then you watch as his corpse falls apart, deprived of the reishi that kept him stitched together.

“Ransōtengai,” you realize. “Set into the outermost layer of his blut where it would be safer from injury.”

“Does that mean something to you, Captain?” Renji asks, giving the corpse a nudge with his foot.

“It means he was already dead,” Ishida explains. “At least, for all intents and purposes his body had long since passed its limit.”

“So, are you satisfied with that outcome?” Yoruichi asks, after remaining politely silent the whole time.

>Are you all okay? Give me a status update.
>Aaroniero, we need to discuss your future.

Hm, I wonder if there’d be any way to move Ichinose’s memories into a reigai, get him one of those artificial bodies. I wonder if he could still use his Zanpakuto if we did? I imagine the Arrancar that ate him would object, but he’s kind of an asshole and ate one of our former subordinates, so I can’t say I care much about his opinion.

we could try shoving the personality facets into a sword... but I think none of them would like the idea of being the subservient sword.

The hollow wasn't a full fledged menos grande yet, was he? Because if he wasn't completely self-aware when he killed Ichinose, then we can offer him some leniency. But if he was aware? Purge.

As for the whole 'balancing three different persons in a single body' thing, we can only offer pointers and advice. The rest is him.

“Is everyone alright?” you ask loudly, not to anyone in particular.

“I'm alive,” Renji announces.

“We're whole again,” Snake adds.

Ishida shrugs. “As fine as I was before.”

“I'm good,” Ichigo nods, sheathing Zangetsu.

“I feel just fine,” Tenkotsuki informs you.

“Same,” Rosa grunts.

“A bit confused,” Aaroniero admits.

“How are Rukia, Tatsuki, and Chad?” Ichigo presses you.

“All alive and recovering swiftly,” you reply. “They'll be fine.”

“Well, shall we... continue this?” Aaroniero asks.

You shake your head. “No, not you. Not right now... the part of you that has Ichinose's memories will understand that precaution when it comes to such personal matters.”

Aaroniero shuts his eyes, and nods quietly. “Yeah, I get it.”

“Yoruichi, if you don't mind? The others will probably be catching up with us soon, maybe take Aaroniero here and escort them the rest of the way?”

“You suspect a trap or an ambush?”

“Don't you always?”

“Point taken.”

Ishida gestures towards the large building atop this high prominence. “It's not far.”

Only just got caught up from the archive, its been a fun read. Riku is OP, Yoruichi is both Best Waifu and Best Pet, and Gin is a treat errytime all the time.

I wonder if you could do an omake about a Rangiku going on a date with Gin? Something cute and funny.
>>
>>2615442
I've been trying for that one forever, I never get the cute omakes done (except when I ask for like three threads in a row)
>>
>>2617333
Omake ideas are free to give out! Share ideas anyway! On an anon image board nobody can bully you for having dumb ideas!

I had an idea for Riku and/or Yoruichi and/or Kenpachi heading to the living world on vacation to check out how modern humans are doing with their martial arts & bladed weapon schools, see if there's anything worth adding to the Seireitei's handbook. Maybe do a couple bouts in high-level MMA leagues to let off some steam

I'll do this later.

“I've got a surprise for you,” Riku grins.

Yoruichi glances up from her work, curious to hear what it is that her wife has arranged for their first 'official' anniversary. “Oh, have you now? I trust it's nothing too obvious.”

“There's a fight in Philadelphia tonight,” Riku declares, waving two small pieces of paper in her hand. “And guess who's got tickets?”

“Who's fighting?” Yoruichi asks.

“Sugar Ray Robinson and Bobo Olson,” Riku announces. “Should be a good one.”

“Sugar Ray?” Yoruichi muses thoughtfully. “He's an American welterweight champ, right? The one who accidentally killed a guy a few years ago?”

“He stepped up to middleweight,” Riku corrects her wife. “It it's the big fight on right now.”

“Then we'll make an evening of it,” Yoruichi smiles. “It's a date.”

The Senkaimon is prepared for a single special use, and just before dinnertime two Captains step through into the living world... specifically into Philadelphia. It takes a few minutes on a municipal bus to get to a restaurant simply called “Oyster House”. In their summerweight swing suits neither one stands out, though Yoruichi attracts a few glances that aren't necessarily favorable from some of the locals... especially when the duo pass through what seem to be the “whiter” neighborhoods.

“Well, that wasn't especially fun,” Yoruichi admits. “We should just run to the arena when we're done.”

“Agreed,” Riku grumbles. “This outfit's not exactly my favorite thing in the world either.”

“Our shihakusho would draw too much attention,” Yoruichi sighs before ordering a course of raw oysters and a plate of crabcakes in perfect English.

Riku quickly orders the same oyster course, along with seared scallops in a gingery sauce: also in perfect English. “Every time. Every time it's like people are shocked you and I speak English.”

“How did you learn English, anyway?” Yoruichi asks curiously. “Don't think I ever bothered to ask.”

Riku shrugs. “Magic.”

“I see,” Yoruichi nods, seeming to accept the non-explanation.

The food eventually arrives, and the tone of the whole trip slowly begins to change. The oysters are so fresh the only way they could be more so is if they were still alive, and the main courses are perfect examples of what they can be. The talk focuses on work for a while, though that can only last so long since nothing really has happened of importance since the end of the War.

The Captains pay with money gathered by the Onmitsukidō for the odd mission abroad, standard practice necessitated by the two World Wars of previous decades. When the waiter takes the bills, he pauses for a moment.

“Say, you two ladies are Japanese, right?” he asks.

“Sort of,” Riku shrugs, having anticipated the question. “Half German, half Japanese... born in New York.”

“I'm Japanese though,” Yoruichi adds. “We both grew up on Long Island.”

“Must've been tough these last few years,” the man nods thoughtfully.

“We got by,” Riku replies calmly.

Yoruichi grins. “The little white boys learned we could hit harder than they could.”

“After that,” Riku smirks, “things were easier.”

“Well, good that it's behind us now,” the waiter replies uneasily. “What with that whole United Nations business.”

“Now if you'll excuse us,” Yoruichi rises from her seat, “we're in town for the Sugar Ray fight. Best if we leave plenty of time.”

The two Captains share a satisfied grin on the sidewalk outside the restaurant before vaulting to the nearest rooftop.

The Center is packed for the fight, and after killing some time in a nearby park Yoruichi and Riku find themselves among a crowd of thousands all watching two fighters enter the ring. The two fighters carry themselves totally differently, with neither one standing a full six feet. But of the two it's clear who the Captains have picked as the likely winner.

“This 'Olson' guy looks new,” Yoruichi comments. “He doesn't carry himself very well.”

“Both orthodox,” Riku comments. “Simplifies things. But Robinson's definitely got the experience.”

“Wonder which one hits harder?” Yoruichi muses as a couple of the nearby viewers shift their attention to the two ladies and their running commentary.

“I dunno,” Riku admits. “But seems like Robinson has at least two inches of reach on Olson.”

And as it happens, 'Sugar Ray' Robinson had much more than reach as an advantage. Olson gets off to a painfully slow start, with Robinson dominating the early rounds. There's no real 'style' there: fast, strong jabs mix equally with bolo punches, hooks, and uppercuts with no special favor given to any of them, or even to which hand they're delivered with.

“I'm surprised he's still standing,” Riku admits as a battered Olson returns to his corner.

“This round,” Yoruichi predicts.

Sure enough, it's not long into the eleventh punishing round that Olson drops to the floor after a solid blow from Robinson. The crowd cheers as the referee counts to ten, and the victorious Robinson surveys his work. For his part, Olson doesn't move.

>>2626103
“It's fascinating watching a totally different style,” Yoruichi continues with her second drink of the evening. The two Captains ducked into a fancifully-named bar that seemed relatively popular, the Mask and Wig Club. “Totally different from Shaolin.”

“Thought you'd enjoy that,” Riku smiles. “Think you can use any of that?”

“It's definitely worth the time,” Yoruichi admits, sipping at her sidecar. “It won't work with Heihuquan, the footwork's totally different. But maybe with Southern Mantis, or Wing Chun, or hand-work more like wrestling?”

Riku laughs gracelessly into an old-fashioned. “I love watching you work either way, you know!”

“Hey, I'll expect you to help me,” Yoruichi observes. “Laugh while you can, you've just made a whole lot more work for yourself.”

“Is it really work, when you're doing what you love?” Riku quips in a saccharine tone.

“Oh, dear Riku,” Yoruichi purrs before sliding back into Japanese. “If there's a point where it goes back to being 'work' we're going to find it together.”

“There's no such point,” Riku shoots back in the same language. “Though you're welcome to try.”

“Challenge accepted.”

Riku's grin widens. “The prospect excites me.”

“It should,” Yoruichi smirks.

“Then it's settled,” Riku switches back into English. “Although this really feels like one of those situations where I win either way.”

“So, you ready to head back home?”

Yoruichi sighs contentedly, setting aside her empty glass. “It was a great night out... you really know how to show a girl a fun time.”

“Glad to hear it,” Riku replies, setting her own tumbler down on the bar.

“Now then,” Yoruichi purrs. “If you'll follow me, I've got something else planned."

"Is that so?"

"It is," Yoruichi affirms. "Let's go home, Riku."

With a smile, not a smirk, Riku nods in agreement. "Yeah. Let's."

Heya, just wanted to say I've caught up from archive binging, been a few months since I've been current.

Glad to see the story still lives on! A really enjoyable read, even if my work schedule means I almost never get to be in thread live. Been following your stuff since the first Shadows of Zeon quest, and always enjoyed your storytelling.

When do ya usually do quest stuff, time-wise? I'd like to try and be more present and in live threads rather than always just archive reading.

Good to hear you've kept up!

The usual schedule these days is Shinigami Savant running at 10am PST on Saturdays, with Claymore running at 10am PST on Sundays. But sometimes my own schedule forces me to change that up.

You are Emilou Apacci, an arrancar whose talents include punching things, stabbing things, and blowing things up with ceros along with a predilection towards handicrafts you've never really understood. And finally, it seems like you've finally faced off against an enemy strong enough that you won't feel like a bully fighting him.

Unfortunately, he seems pretty weak by comparison to the other 'espadas' and the Sternritter that Aizen's brought to the living world with him. Which isn't to say you really think he's weak, just that he's probably got some sort of trick that makes him much stronger than he looks.

“Hey, you gonna quit staring at me or what?” the other arrancar demands gruffly. “You're getting annoying.”

“He seems as loud as he is large,” Mirai comments from somewhere over your right shoulder. Which is true... not only is he quite loud he's also easily eight feet tall if it's an inch.

“So was the last guy,” you grumble, recalling the oversized whale of an arrancar you almost effortlessly beat down before this. “But somehow this one feels different.”

“As though his body were built with greater power in mind?” Mirai offers.

You shake your head. “That's not what I...”

You instinctively sidestep the slow but powerful punch, catching your attacker's arm under yours and locking your hooked weapon under his armpit. Using this position to brace yourself, you essentially carve his arm off at the shoulder, and let the severed limb fall to the city below.

You bitch!” he howls in rage, cocking back with his good arm and generating a bala. “I'm gonna kill you!”

“Not likely,” Mirai counters, bringing her warclub down onto the arrancar's thumb. The weapon smashes through the bala before he can fire it, and clearly breaks his thumb at the same time.

You follow up on Mirai's assault by firing your own bala... actually four at a time to be precise, three of which hit the arrancar in the gut, in the ribs on his exposed right side, and in the face. But the withering barrage just seems to make the guy madder.

A surprise blow from his good arm sends you sailing, with such force that it takes you a moment to right yourself and slow your body to a stop. In the mean time you notice he's done the same to Mirai, who despite having parried with a zanpakuto that completely ignores reiatsu seems to have taken a blow to the face from it.

You realize that the punch was so strong that he actually smacked Mirai with her own club. His reiatsu may not be all that impressive, and he may not be quite as fast as you or Mirai, but his pure physical strength and single-minded dedication to killing you are crazy.

Mirai's pretty skilled in kidō too you hear, adding to her ability to crack just about anything over the head and make it hurt. So she'll probably be going for a mixed combat strategy, hit with whatever fits the situation from moment to moment rather than trying to force a single strategy over the other alternatives. Which isn't easy, but it's the style Riku favors so everyone she's ever worked with has seen how effective it can be when it's done well.

You and Mirai probably can't do it that well, but between the two of you it should be a bit easier to keep up the pressure by doing it as a team.

“Bala!” you break Riku's one rule and shout out the name of your attack at the top of your lungs, drawing the brute's attention to the incoming blasts.

With a shout, Mirai slams her zanpakuto into his exposed right side.

“Why you...” he begins, swiping at her with his good arm. But partway through the motion, you use your sonido to get behind him and unleash your next attack.

“Cero!”

The hastily-charged blast slams into his back, burning away a good portion of his white uniform and leaving his skin smoldering.

“Damn it!” he howls, slinging a bala your way... or at least in your general direction, since you're already moving it's hard to tell whether that would even have hit you or not had you stood still.

But what you can tell is that the strategy is working.

“Sōkatsui!” Mirai shouts, blasting the arrancar in the face with a blinding torrent of reiatsu.

You take the arrancar's back a second time, this time opting for quantity over power. “Bala buckshot!”

“Sesshōseki!”

“Escudo!” you shout, stepping in to block the massive arm that threatens to crash into Mirai in a counterattack. Then you backstep with a sonido and let the shield lose its shape, basically flashing outwards into a raging inferno of roiling reiatsu.

Then Mirai drops the hammer, smashing the arrancar over the head with her club and sending him hurtling into a small apartment block that crumbles into dust around him.

“Hey, Yammy!” one of the sternritter shouts. “What're you doing down there on the ground big guy?”

A large piece of wall shifts, the arrancar throwing it off himself in a cloud of plaster and what you kinda hope isn't asbestos.

“And then there's this asshole!” the arrancar named 'Yammy' roars.

“These two little girls beating you up?” the man shouts down in a tone you can tell isn't one of concern at all. “You want some help?”

“You can go die, you bastard!” Yammy shoots back, dusting himself off with his remaining arm. Considering the beating you gave him it's impressive that he's even standing, let alone mouthing off. “I can handle two little insects like them without your damn getting in the way!”

“Insects?” you snort. “You're the one scurrying around on the ground, dumbass.”

“Why don't you come down here and say that!?” Yammy demands angrily.

“Cause I don't talk to bugs, dumbass,” you retort. “They're just kinda gross, you know? Like too many limbs... well, the wrong number of limbs I guess. Your case, too few.”

“I'll kill you for that!” Yammy growls.

“Oooh, so scary,” you mock him from above. “Try coming up here and saying that, stumpy.”

“What'd you call me!?” he demands.

“Stumpy,” you reiterate. “Cause you've got a stump. Dumbass.”

Then you pause, narrowing your eyes at the arrancar as he knocks down a bit of wall that's still somehow standing, bringing down part of a floor on his head and cursing. With his big dumb idiot fist... a fist that definitely wasn't that big a few minutes ago, attached to an arm that you'd struggle to fit under your own arm.

That's not right...” you mutter. “Hey Mirai!”

“What?” Mirai calls back, flash-stepping over to you. “Something the matter?”

“Is it just me, or is this guy getting bigger?”

Mirai glances down at the arrancar, her own eyes narrowed. “Actually, now that you mention it? He does seem to be getting bigger.”

“That's right, you insects!” he shouts, leaping into the air and taking a stance on your level. He's easily gained another two, maybe three feet of height from when you started fighting.

“My power's called Ira,” he grins proudly. “I get stronger the madder you make me... so keep talking smack all you want, little bitch. It's just gonna shorten your life.”

So your opponent is a man who gets stronger the angrier he gets... obviously thin-skinned and proud of his currently pathetic abilities. The harder you hit him the madder he gets, the stronger he gets, and the more you talk smack at him the harder he smacks you back.

“That's not fair!” you shout. “Talking smack and hitting things are the two things I'm good at, and you're sayin' you'll get stronger off that!?”

>Mirai needs to give you an opening to carve off some more chunks of him before this gets out of hand.

“We need to end this quick!” you shout. “I can't keep from mouthing off for very long!”

“Agreed!” she nods back to you, spinning her club around by the ring at the end of its shaft.

“Bala!” you call out, firing a handful of the blasts at the onrushing arrancar, blasts he mostly shrugs off now. Did those two feet really mean that much of a difference in his raw power?

Thankfully you don't get to find out, since his arm is hit by the rapidly-spinning studded club in Mirai's hand, which makes a full rotation and slams into Yammy's head.

“Cero!” you shout, firing a full-power blast from the tip of your horn and sending him reeling.

But that's not where you stop, you know that you can't let up yet. Not while you can still feel Yammy's reiatsu.

Mirai extends her hand. “Hōrin!”

A long winding rope of reiatsu wraps around Yammy's body and with a hard pull Mirai reels him back in. You cut your palm and reach out as Yammy hurtles back towards you.

“Gran Reina Cero!” you roar, firing off an almost point-blank blast.

But unfortunately, Yammy responds with a powerful technique of his own.

“Enrage, Ira!”

The release of his reiatsu not only blasts Mirai's bakudō into nothingness, but throws you through an office building which means that unfortunately you can't see what his release actually looks like until you stagger out of the destroyed building.

And the physical change is maybe the single most dramatic transformation you've ever seen from an arrancar. The scale of the change is nothing like Lady Halibel, or Starrk, or any of them. It makes your own release look like a simple color swap by comparison.

He's huge.

The buildings around you aren't even that big, he could easily squash them under any of his numerous feet.

Holy shit.

What the hell.

How do you even begin to fight something like that?

… and why does he have a '0' tattooed on his body?

You try and hide your reiatsu as best you can, hoping that the now bigger dumb idiot is dumber after his transformation as well. The best thing you can do is regroup with Mirai, make sure she's okay, and come up with a plan to keep this monster from demolishing the pillars that are helping keep the real Karakura town safe.

It doesn't take you long to find her.

“What do we do now?” she asks quietly as the massive arrancar bellows challenges at you.

Extending your pesquisa you can tell that people are keeping their distance: Lady Halibel has been engaged by one of the Sternritter along with one of the Captains... Gin, you think. Captain Fēng is scrambling to move the wounded Captains as far away from Yammy as possible, and most of the Lieutenants are scrambling to form a perimeter around Captain Shiba. The medical team seems to be moving towards Captain Fēng, making sure they too are away from the fighting.

“Ah, scurrying like ants!” Yammy bellows in delight.

“I'm struggling to come up with an idea,” you admit. “What've you got?”

“I can use a bow,” Mirai chuckles grimly. “Big opponents are kind of my weakness, at least as things stand now.”

Well, that's not helpful. Cool, but not really helpful.

The Head Captain and his Lieutenant are fighting a Sternritter, while it seems the last Espada is fighting Rangiku and Bambi... they won't be able to help.

Damn it all. Think... it may never have been your strongest suite but you have to think... drawing him away just risks more collateral... letting him rampage would have the same effect, and trying to draw his fire could go badly if he fired a cero the wrong way. You shudder to think of the range this giant bastard could achieve with a cero as big as he must be capable of. So really taking him down is your only realistic option.

“Ah, there you are, pissant!” Yammy roars as Mirai reappears, taking up a position atop a highrise office building that's somehow managed to remain standing through the whole ordeal. “Come out to die?”

“Bankai,” she replies sternly. “Sesshōseki, Seisha Hicchū.”

A comparatively modest burst of reiatsu sees her outfit and weapon transformed, and she takes aim with her razor-lined bow, the string drawn fully and her position completely immobile.

“What do you think you can do with that tiny little...”

The arrow flies with impossible speed and precision, straight into the massive arrancar's eye. He howls in pain, grabbing at his face with both hands and stomping several buildings flat as he thrashes.

“That,” Mirai retorts. “I can do that with this tiny little bow.”

“You wretched bitch!” Yammy curses, seeming to grow slightly in stature from the insult to his body. “How did you even...”

A flash step, and a second arrow, interrupt his tirade. The target is the same eye, the arrow slipping between massive fingers to find its mark. Almost too easy given the eye's massive size.

“Aw, the eye again!” he howls, turning to try and charge a cero to obliterate the entire part of the fake Karakura town Mirai is standing in.

A trio of arrows pierce the cero before it can fully form, their seki-stone heads dispersing the dense mass and setting it off inside Yammy's mouth. The wound is hardly grievous, but the amount of time Yammy thrashes around because of it is exactly what Mirai needed.

“Took you long enough,” she grins, before using another flash step to escape as fast as her feet will carry her.

While she'd like to keep a watchful eye on the scene as it plays out, she doesn't want to be anywhere near the action as it's happening.

Not this time.

The smoke clears from around Yammy's head, revealing something entirely new. Something he didn't expect.

Its body is massive, and its reiatsu oppressive. Like a cold blanket of death pressing down, smothering everything in Karakura for block after block. It rises easily over the tops of the remaining buildings, its fists like small cars and its horns like walls of giant spears. Were it not so horrifying its composition would almost seem comical... part deer, part humanoid, with a great mane of hair and powerful, bulging muscles. Its scaly white tail whips around, hissing from a snake-like mouth, flicking its tongue as if curious about the world around it.

“What the hell is that thing?” Yammy mutters, turning his full attention to the newcomer. Even the other battles under way cease for a moment so the fighters can watch.

You are Ayon.

That is all.

You do not think about what you are. You do not consider where you came from. Those things are irrelevant.

Questions are irrelevant.

Thought is irrelevant.

The only thing that matters is death. That is your reason. That is all you offer this world.

“That's Ayon!” says the loud deer woman.

Correction, all three are loud. 'Deer woman' will suffice.

“What spare parts did you use to scrape it together!?” says the large one, the enemy. Yammy, an arrancar. You are aware of this.

Though, it is irrelevant.

“You should watch your mouth,” says deer woman. “Ayon's got a nasty temper... and he's ungodly strong.”

Untrue. Temper is irrelevant.

True.

“If this is the game you wanna play I'll just have to kill that piece of trash,” says the enemy.

Rude.

Several moments pass.

“So... you gonna do something?” asks deer woman.

You do intend to do something. You intend to do what you exist to do.

You intend to kill. However cero at range is undesirable. That is what deer woman thinks.

Frustrating. But ultimately... irrelevant.

The enemy's body composition is uncertain, though its tauric build is awkward and heavy. It has a superfluous number of legs, each with low mobility. Its torso is not flexible enough. Its arms are overly long and not mobile enough to compensate for rapid movement.

You have selected an optimal strategy.

You rush towards the enemy.

“You dumbass!” says the enemy, its mouth widening.

It intends to use cero. Risk of severe damage or death high.

Irrelevant.

You kick off your back foot, momentarily straining under the acceleration, and your palm meets the giant arrancar's chin with a resounding crash. Its jaw snaps shut as you push further into its defensive space, and it is then that you strike.

While you target one of its lead knees with your hoof, attempting to shatter the kneecap, you also lash out with your tail. Its fangs bite deep into the enemy's side, injecting a substantial dose of poison as you turn your body and grasp his head in both your hands. With all your might you sling the arrancar's massive body over your shoulder.

“Got you!” says your enemy as his own hands grasp your shoulders.

While your enemy crashes through a building he does manage to get under your center of mass, throwing you to the ground in turn. You land in what looks like something humans call a 'public park'. The enemy rises to its many feet and charges you like rolling thunder, smashing through low buildings and squashing cars underfoot.

He raises his hands over his head, prepared to bring them down on your own skull in an attempt to crush it in one blow.

Problems do not exist. Only situations which require a solution.

Present solvable? Poison needs time to work.

Enemy's size implies either one large central heart or the presence of a secondary heart. Either way, it is likely that increase in heart rate will increase the poison's rate of spread, as might be expected.

You raise your body so that all its weight is balanced on your shoulders, bringing one hoof down against the enemy as he tries to strike for your head. Your other hoof finds the ground, and with the momentum from your kick you rise to your feet only to take a heavy blow to the head.

The raw power exceeds expectations.

You crash into a building, which slowly crumbles behind you as you return the blow.

A second punch staggers you.

“You're weak!” says the enemy.

Confidence. Not overconfidence. Your physical power is not a match.

Too noisy.

Your next blow is swift, targeting the enemy's throat. He makes a gagging sound before smashing you across the face with his fist, but the speaking has been successfully terminated.

His next blow you manage to stop, grappling with his arm and landing a series of quick body blows which he answers with a punch to your stomach that nearly folds you over. Your balance is disturbed as the enemy throws you to the ground, punching you hard in the face.

“I'm gonna rip this thing back into the little bits and pieces you made him from,” says the enemy. “Then I'm gonna do the same to you bugs! You're all dead!”

“Come on Ayon,” says deer woman. “Come on, get up buddy...”

Deer woman is loud.

Deer woman is abrasive.

Deer woman probably does not realize that you have awareness, and yet she speaks to you as if you do.

You are not sure if she is smarter than you or not.

But deer woman, cat woman, and snake woman are the ones who made you. You exist to fight for them. You exist to kill for them.

The lion woman's technique will likely produce the best response.

You open your eyes.

“Huh?” says your enemy before you blast him with a pair of cero from your now-open eyes.

Taking advantage of his surprise, you commit.

Lion woman has mostly physically-oriented abilities: speed. Strength. Durability. But one subtle thing as well: exceptionally sharp claws and teeth, along with vastly disproportionate jaw and grip strength. Characteristics you have inherited.

You clamp down on the arrancar's throat, sinking your teeth deep into his neck. His hierro is strong, your teeth do not tear out its throat entirely as they should. As they would for a lesser being.

His fist slams into the back of your head.

Irrelevant.

Your right horn shatters under another series of impacts.

Irrelevant.

The arrancar thrashes wildly, breaking your ribs.

You don't need those to kill, so it's irrelevant.

You grasp his wrist and sink your clawed fingertips deep into the flesh. His response is to snap your wrist and dislocate your shoulder with further thrashing, which brings you both crashing down.

Irrelevant. Only the state of your head and neck matter, not the state of your arm. All it needs to do is stay attached to your body.

Your enemy's body changes as he condenses his remaining power... making his body smaller in the process. The poison will only spread faster, and having fewer legs only allows him to roll over, not to escape your grapple.

This is good.

The enemy's blows slowly weaken.

Good.

You push off the ground and release the arrancar's neck from your jaws into your arms, which wrap around its head and brace against the back of its neck. And you slowly apply force. His muscles grow weak and tired from the poison's spread. His neck stretches on one side and compresses on the other, he gasps and sputters for air.

And then you hear a pop, and feel the resistance from his spine disappear.
>1/2
>>
>>2635782
Not satisfied, you continue by twisting the arrancar's head on its neck until you can look him in his empty eyes from behind, then push him off onto the ground.

You glance up at the deer woman, who stares at you in what appears to be surprise at the brutality and effectiveness of your killing technique.

But not disapproval.

This is good.

“That was... good,” says deer woman, finally finding her words. Snake woman and lion woman are still staring with slack-jawed surprise, as if wondering if they truly were a party to your creation and sources of your power.

Pointless. It should be obvious.

“Now, Ayon!” deer woman's tone grows more confident. “What say we...”

"Sorry for that," Lille Barro apologizes to the breathless Captain in front of him. "I know it was quite rude, but that spectacle was growing tiresome."

The giant creature summoned by the three arrancar to fight a desperate battle against the massive Yammy Llargo falls, almost as if in slow-motion, a hole having been blown through its skull from one temple to the other.

No... perhaps 'blown through' isn't the right description. It was more as if the beast's flesh and bone had simply been removed from existence.

"That's quite the scary gun you've got there, Sternritter," the Head Captain pants, wiping his sweaty brow and leaving a smear of blood behind instead. "Tell me something though, why didn't you use it sooner?"

"Those beasts were both worse than trash," Lille Barro explains, his tone callously neutral even after the death of his supposed ally. "I planned to rid the world of them and their kind anyway. That one was just too unsightly... the rest I will simply have to make time for later."

"Ah, yes," Shunsui grumbles. "A busy man."

"Not a man," Lille corrects his foe. "But an angel of God."
