Late Afternoon

"Eh, Ikuno-chan, can't you be less mean? We're both children in the Garden, should we get to know each other a bit better? Can't we be f-"

Your attempt at trying to reconcile yourself with her isn't particularly successful. With more strength than should be expected from a girl her age, she flings 'War and Peace' at your face. You wince as a rough edge of the book scrapes against your forehead, harshly grazing across it. Ikuno begins harshly attacking you, specifically railing against the fact that you are a boy.

"You're disgusting. You're also entitled. You're just like that filthy Pierre from that book. You think that just because you're a boy that you can barge in where you want and do what you what. You think you can try and be any girl's prince on a white horse just because you've got a pee-pee. Honestly, you disgust me. You and all the other boys who want to play knight in shining armour.Constantly getting in my way. Why can't I be the Prince Charming for once? Why don't you go annoy someone else? Crawl back to the common room to Code 556 and ask for flowers or something? Disgusting. Get out of here before I throw another book at your face."

It would be an understatement that Code 196's sudden denunciation of you bit into your pride - no, it outright mauled it. You manage to breathe in deeply, somehow managing to cry. You're a boy. Boys don't cry. Isn't that right?

[] Take a chair and throw it in her face for that {Both you and Ikuno use Athletic roll.}

Night -

You're managing. You've been through worse. You can cope. It's not like you're getting pruned. You can cope.

You quietly pick up 'War and Peace'. Just as discreetly, you crawl out of the library, out of Code 196's vicious glare and you make your way to the canteen.

---

Same old glop. Same old chewing. Bread, ham, potato, peas, soup, orange juice. You don't know how the other kids manage to graze on it when it's so meagre. It should've been as simple as "bite a piece of bread, take some peas, potatoes, soup, finally meat, then orange juice and repeat". Bite a bread, force in some peas, take in some potato, slurp a bit of soup, have a bit of meat, wash it down with orange juice. Bread, peas, potato, soup, meat, orange juice. Eat all your vegetables or get pruned. So damn simple.

Of course, you manage to be the first one to finish your dinner. You make your way back to the commons and retreat to the corner. Maybe this is just the way things are. Everything is a mixture of light and dark, a bit of good and bad. Good things don't mean anything unless there's some bad. You're waiting for the good times.

You clean up. You make ready for sleep.

You get into your bed. Another day, another disappointment.

---

You wake up. You get breakfast, this time without any conflicts over what spread you get.

Finishing breakfast, you hear a commotion as. Code 016, Hiro, arrived in the canteen. Once again, the children gather around him, as if he were a magnet for them. Code 326 and 015 were especially trying to get as close to him as possible. 196 was following 015.

Why did he in particular have to be popular? Why did he have to pull in the children while you repelled them? If Papa created the Children, why did you have to be so low and Hiro so above you?

There's something patently awful about Hiro's presence. He's a reminder of just how lowly you are. You are nothing compared to him. The moment he came into the room, you were reminded that you were just a common beast, whereas he was something more...

...Maybe all the previous negativity is getting to you. Hiro didn't do any wrong to you. Yet. But you certainly bet that you could not enjoy being one of those who idolised him. It would just remind you of how far removed you were from him. You guess that it would be for the best to stay in your corner and prevent yourself from acting brashly.

[X] Go to the library and mark out your own territory.

We need to find a book in the library that will influence Futoshi to change.

As he is he's full of self loathing and learned helplessness who will just form an uncomfortable codependent relationship with his pistil, which will fuck him over in the long run.

We need to change his temperment, he's supposed to be a child soldier, maybe we need to read something that will make Futoshi more agressive or at least turn that misery and self pity into resolve, or anger.

rage can be one hell of a motivator and a pistil is more likely to respect us as a hotheaded pilot then a quiet pathetic one.

You decide to make your way to the library, dragging along your copy of 'War and Peace'. You take extra care to be vigilant given what happened there yesterday. Your forehead is still slightly sore from the impact of a tome crashing into your head.

You quietly make your way into the library. Only Code 015 appears to be here. She's reading a book. A cursory glimpse reveals to you that it is about 'War' and 'Art'. It's telling of your low status that she barely even notices your entrance.

Let's look for something easier to read and with more value to Futoshi.

War and Peace is concerns itself over a lot of subject's not very useful to Futoshi at the moment.

What would be a good book for Futoshi to become influenced by?

Maybe something that teaches him something about traditional virtues. Being tough and strong, and how achieving greatness leads to happiness and respect.

Talking with girls absolutely goes nowhere. The extremely difficult books that Papa stocks in the Garden's libraries are of far more value than talking to a girl could possibly ever give. You ignore the presence of Code 015 entirely.

You tiptoe through the bookshelves. You clumsily cause a small stack of books to fall.

You look at the small pile before you. There is an assortment of books. You feel drawn by fate to them:

'Marcus Aurelius'. Sounds like an important man. He probably has some important things to say. Indeed, there is a marble bust on the front cover. This man probably came before you most likely. You wonder what words of wisdom he has to give to you.

You begin reading it.

---

You've gone midway through the book. It is surprisingly accessible for one of Papa's books. It's not too full of unpronounceable garbage and you are already beginning to feel what message it is trying to give you: 'stop worrying too much'.

That in itself creates a bit of a problem. First however, there is your rumbling belly to deal with.

---

Code 326 is nowhere to be seen. Are they pruning him?

Never mind. None of your business.

As you finish your lunch, the problem created by Meditations rises to the forefront again. You really aren't too particularly concerned about the bad things happening around you - a great burden has been lifted off your shoulders. It is precisely because of this that you don't see any particular sentimental value on what to do - not that it's a bad thing, although it certainly reminds of you the occasional other child emotional husks that get come back into the Garden after 'maintenance'.

The question was where to go and not give a damn about the things happening around you. Where would you calmly mind your own business in your little corner?

You decide to go to the flower garden.

You be honest, it was more "invade" the flower garden. Maybe "invade" was a little excessive, but your presence wasn't exactly that wanted. The flower garden belonged to the girls - as an unspoken rule. Of course, you knew about your somewhat repellent nature.

In the end though, you suppose that if they wanted to glare and hiss at you, then that was their problem. It's not like you were going out of your way to attack them or anything. Just set up a little Futoshi Corner and mind your own business - that was the usual procedure and given your past experiences, it had worked wonderfully.

And so you set up a little Futoshi corner for you to rest and let your mind go adrift.

...

Your little session of not-giving-a-damn is interrupted. You notice Code 556 coming approaching you by herself. She hands you a flower. The other girls seem surprised by this development

"Want a flower, Futoshi-kun?"

This wasn't a simple request. At the core of it, it was her insisting on doing a favour for you by giving you a flower, so that she could be allowed to be that all-loving young flower girl she was - functionally, she was trying to charm you into accepting her pity - at least that was what you perceived.

You weren't particular interested in refusing Kokoro's attempt to give you her flower anyways. Your cheeks feel warm as your childlike inhibitions - fear of the 'cooties' crumble easily. It's nice to be cared about by someone. You don't have to be alone anymore. Your stubby hands tremble as your reach out. You delicately grab Kokoro's flower.

We could look for a book on the nature of friendship.

One of the ways Futoshi could improve himself is getting a basic undersanding of how healthy relationships work.

As a stamen we have to work with our pistil and that means not being so dense that we can't properly communicate.

Futoshi becomes heartbroken partially because he never really asks how Kokoro feels.

You decide that after having dinner, you're going to spend time in the library. After all, it has a more well established Futoshi Corner. Less people were going to stare at you and you'd be given more space to get gather your thoughts.

You make your way to the library and settle in your little corner.

A familiar and unwelcome presence flows through the room. You peek and see that Code 196 has taken her seat at her side of the table. Thankfully, she doesn't notice you in the library.

You mind your own business. You let yourself be with your thoughts. As your mind idles about, you notice some questions, some very interesting questions popping up into your head:

'Why did Papa create me?'
'Why did he create me to be hated?'
'Does Papa really love me?'
'What is Papa's plan for me?'
'If Papa created me, who created Papa?'

Such interesting questions - questions that you personally don't feel too foolhardy to ask, begin to crop up. You put them to the side, but they start to loom in your mind.

Code 196 leaves. Apparently, Code 015 is now alone in the library.

It's now night. It was time to go to sleep.

You approach the table and take the book, 'The Art of War' . 015 is completely preoccupied with repeating 'Hiro, Hiro, Hiro' as she paces around madly, almost walking into you. Whatever, you head back to the Futoshi Corner.

You make yourself comfortable. Opening 'The Art of War', you enter a world quite different from your own. In particular, you are caught by surprise by a particular part of the prologue:

> But the girls only burst out laughing. Sun Tzŭ said: If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, then the general is to blame. — So he started drilling them again, and this time gave the order "Left turn," whereupon the girls once more burst into fits of laughter. Sun Tzŭ said: If words of command are not clear and distinct, if orders are not thoroughly understood, the general is to blame. But if his orders are clear, and the soldiers nevertheless disobey, then it is the fault of their officers. — So saying, he ordered the leaders of the two companies to be beheaded

That seemed rather harsh. However, there was a clear message here - in military affairs, all must obey whether or not they were boys or girls. A girl could lose her head as easily as a boy - at least, that was the first thing that came to mind.

Returning to the matter of you visiting a world you've never seen before through books, you got across some interesting names, especially in the section about 'The Art of War''s commentators: Cao Cao.

The name began to resonate with you, as if it had been waiting for you your entire life: "Speak of Cao Cao and Cao Cao will appear." You felt like a ghost went through your body. Making a mental note to never forget that name, you moved on. {+2 Luck}

You notice that there is chatter about the fact that neither 326 nor Hiro are here. The main problem was that it came out of the blue. Kids that went rarely ever came back.

You decide to go to the flower garden.

---

Aside from Codes 556 and 390 messing around with their usual clique while said clique occasionally glares at disgust at you, there isn't much of interest as you spend the afternoon with your thoughts to yourself.

You hear a racket. It's coming from near the entrance, which was opposite the labs where children kept getting taken to.

As you peer from the threshold, you see that Hiro has returned from wherever he has been last night. The other children swarm him, but for some reason he doesn't seem to be as outreaching as before. You see that Code 326 is chucking a metaphorical fit over something, having thrown his toy ball and made a mess of a flowerbed. Judging from his jacket, he's back from being in the labs.

You gaze intensely at Hiro's appearance.

Oh yeah. The caretakers did something to him alright. He seemed like one those other kids who got Elixir injections and stopped crying and smiling. Creepy.

If 016, Hiro, idol of all the Children in the Garden could not avoid such a sorry fate, no-one could...Could you?

None of your business. Such is life in the Garden.

You don't know whose bright idea it was to put literature riddled with historical references in a library full of Children who they clearly did not want to develop independently - at least, this was the conclusion you'd reached after doing a significant amount of research by yourself.

As the end of your days in the Garden approached, every day drawing closer to the transfer to a proper Plantation, the library's Futoshi Corner became a sort of little house of wisdom. Gathering a wide collection of the literary canon together, you'd begun the painstaking task of organising them into a chronology - literature, fiction or otherwise, did not exist in a vacuum. Every piece of literature that existed in the Garden's library was a product of its own time. From that, you extrapolated that before the era of the Plantations and Klaxosaurs, humanity had at least 4000 or so years' worth of written history and fictional literature - stretching from the Epic of Gilgamesh, to Shakespeare, the Golden Bough to Starship Troopers. Throughout the ages, as suggested by the research, there had always been a dominant figure - but they were never called "Papa". Indeed, there existed a past when Adults protected Children rather than the other way around, a past when Children were not raised in the Garden. You recorded your findings in your diary, which you took close care to keep away from the caretakers' eyes.

On the piloting side of things, ever since that day that he returned with blank eyes, Hiro's aptitude in the neural combat simulations had begun an awful drop into the level of the inferior higher-digit Parasites. Code 326, even as he grew into a rather bitter individual, ascended the simulation rankings - as did you. Although the Caretakers took notice that in raw piloting skill you weren't necessarily a double-digit's, they highlighted your tactical capability - unprecedented for a triple-digit and possibly making you an NCO candidate. Apparently, it was approaching Code 056's. 666, was of course, 666.

The more time you spent in the Garden library, the more those who frequented it became familiar with you. You somehow managed to begin to talk with Code 196 on a civilised level with basic, if forced, politeness. Code 015 also learned to accept you in your corner that you weren't reminded of how repellent you were in her presence. The library had become a sort of second home. Days in which one of you three were absent were considered unusual.

---

You were transferred to P13's Mistilteinn along with Codes 015, 016, 056, 196, 326, 390, 556, 666 and 703 at roughly the age of 12.

The transfer to Mistelteinn, Plantation 13 as pre-parasites, created a small hassle. Again, you had to mark out your Futoshi Corners. That in itself was not a problem, but the change of libraries to base yourself in ruined social dynamics. 056 had begun shifting her main place of recreation to the patio, playing with cats. 1/2

In shifting her place of recreation, 056 unknowingly dragged along 196 too - to an extent. The fact was, 196 was a bookworm - a rotten one at that. Although she tried her hardest to get a book and then head outside to where Code 015 was, the fact also remained that you were pretty much permanently based with your Futoshi Corner in the library - to her, probably a fat pig pretending to read blighting one of her more important resources.

To be fair, it served your purposes as well. You simply could not afford to have anybody you could not trust catch wind of your historical research. There was no one worth trusting.

This was especially the case given that you had begun to build a timeline to see where the current state of affairs started. Starting from roughly 2025 Anno Domini, historical references in literature, both fictional and non-fictional, begin disappearing --- fading off, leaving you floating in a year you do not know. It was as if history began dying there. In particular, references to a certain intergovernmental organisation - inferred but never mentioned in name - that was until then prominent from 1945 Anno Domini began disappeared - much like the other Children from the Garden... It was all so difficult to work out what happened to it. Two years and nary a measure of progress...

Perhaps it is one of your inborn vices that you prefer solitude to the company of others. Perhaps it was not inborn, but rather the product of many years of enjoying being with nothing else but your thoughts. Either way, the result is the same - you don't think there will be anybody you can come to trust with your findings in the short term. Maybe that will change, but as things are, the folks you've been teamed with are a bunch of uncritical Papa-worshipping dullards who couldn't openly question the state of affairs if their lives depended on it.

As you begin making your way through to the porch, you come across Code 196. She throws at you a glare, an all too familiar "do not talk with Ichigo" glare. That at least told you that Code 015 was out on the porch. It just so happened that the most convenient access outside was through there.

"What did you even read while in the library anyways..." you incidentally grumble as you picked yourself up.

Ichigo momentarily paused as if registering that you just tried talking to her - indeed, you'd never seriously attempted a conversation with her while in the Garden.

She regained her relatively composed demeanor as she paused a second to her answers. She utters in a noticeably diplomatic high voice - she was putting up a front, a manufactured 'Ichigo' to talk to Code 214, who she was cautious to reveal more sincere facets of herself to:

"Stephanie Meyer's 'Twilight' was wonderful. Rowling's Potter series was also nice. Tolkien's books were some of the best..."

Maybe you were reading into it too much, but these were sort of books you predicted Ichigo would be discussing to a stranger - utterly harmless, but revealing, in that it shed light on the type of hero - daresay Hiro figures - that she was so utterly obsessed with.

"...Hi- -Harry is such an interesting protagonist you know. The way Rowling gives him black hair to shoe how moody yet humble he is..."

How tedious. Harmless garbage that revealed not too much about when they were written in...

"Well, I've got to get going." You diplomatically close the conversation.

"Bye." Ichigo politely replies.

It's all so tiring. Here was Code 015, someone who was one of the likely candidates for squad leader of P13 and all she does when asked about books - a very relevant question - is answer back about some youth fiction.

You almost felt insulted. Either she really was that uncultivated as a person - which you know she was most likely not, given how you saw her trying to decipher the Golden Bough - or was she was so socially weak that the thought of being perceived as erudite filled her with terror.

And this was what the caretaker folks considered leader material - not a very honest young lady.

You dismiss your thoughts. You sense that you are clearly overthinking a porch conversation that only happened as a result of random grumbling on your part.

You make for the meadow - or what counted as a meadow in a Plantation. As the sunlight shines through the glass dome above Mistilteinn quarters, revealing harsh, dry, dead land against your foreground, you are reminded that long ago, humanity used to live in large expanses of green, flowing fields. You dismiss the the thought as being rather dreary.

You come to a crossroads. It seems that your fellow Parasites have already begun to make Mistilteinn their home. 016 stands brooding, staring off into the desert expanse. You see a greenhouse and peer 556 organising gardening tools in it.

You approach Hiro's side, making your presence known well beforehand.

It really spoke of APE's power to able to reduce a person like Hiro to this level. Before that fateful day, he truly shone, like the Morning Star. Afterwards, the Garden lost that brief moment of light that 016 had brought to it. Dreary, tedious, dark days dragged on, like a mass crucifixion frequented by African vultures, those children deemed unsuitable as Parasites, the condemned. It was as if a messiah had been stillborn, a victory thrown into the jaws of defeat.

Hiro's near-empty staring into the barren distance spoke of something that you believed to be a desire to be free - free from APE, free from from the duties it imposed on the Children - at least that was what you guessed. You'd probably never know what such a bright star like Hiro was thinking, even it he were burnt out.

If you were him, given his situation with 703, you think the first thing on his mind was the risk of being "expelled and never returning" - synonymous with "pruning" and "disappearing" amongst other things.

Would you ever be able to relate? Every child ran that risk, but it would've hit Hiro especially hard - he was doted on by the Caretakers. He was special, in the true sense of the word.

It was a mystery. What did Hiro want?

You decide in tonight's meeting with Hiro to focus on informing him about the status of Children and Adults. In doing so, you aim to try and incite anger from Hiro. Perhaps then, he might be more receptive to your point of view, whatever it is - you definitely were a ticking time bomb of discontent against APE, but could you really call yourself a rebel yet?

You immediately went to the task of preparing the notes, alongside the argument that you sought to impress onto Hiro.
The seeds of a hitherto unsown fruit would be planted into Hiro's mind. Fertilised by the ashes of his time at the Garden, perhaps it will grow into something magnificent under your care.

---

"How did Children and Adults live co-exist before the Plantations?" That was to be the backbone of your questions. Your three points to share with Hiro - Children and Adults did not exist as separate castes before - Children mingled with Adults, being under their direct protection and tutelage - Adults formed contracts with each other, the name of which you did not know, to formalise this process of protecting Children.

The first point, regarding the lack of a clear distinction between Children and Adults - the world has always been divided into a ruling and a ruled class, but rather than the current system of Children and Adults, in the ancient world, there were Masters and Slaves - in the medieval, Aristocrats and Serfs - in the later Modern era from the 18th Century onwards, Plutocrats and Workers. Even amongst both the ruling and the rule, both sections of society shared a division between Children and Adults - being of either Caste then did not mean clear sets of different obligations and rights. Serf Children lived with Serf Adults, Plutocrat Children lived with Plutocrat Adults - they ate from the same table and lived in the same home. Only from Modern history onwards was there a clearer distinction between Children and Adults and even then, rights heavily favoured Children - indeed, reforms in Victorian England led to the prohibition of Children being used for labour...

The second - not clearly separated as castes, Children learned skills with Adults. From ancient to early 21st century human history, Children enrolled in institutions called "Schools". The apogee of this system was the "Public School System" mentioned in various texts - a single Adult would teach a class of 30 or so Children skills and provide emotional counsel and support to them.

The third point - pairs of female and male Adults often lived with one, two or more Children, with more Children tending to be the norm in earlier eras. Inferred from the behaviour of those Adults who engaged in this contract, the contract was one that focused on exclusivity to one another and was meant to foster the emotional and intellectual development of children.

Hiro arrived, keeping his promise. You recounted your notes to him and his interest in your research deepened.

You take the opportunity to further beseech Hiro to harden his thoughts and heart against APE.

You grasp his arms, staring through his sullen eyes, as if an advisor begging his lord to do what was necessary.

"It is not enough to break the birdcage. We must return to the way things were before. Before, there was no APE. Before, Adults did not rule over Children simply because they were Children. Before, Children did not chafe under a monstrous tyranny that encompassed the entire globe. You were the chosen one Hiro. You must take back the past for all Children. You must realise your role in all of this and embrace it wholeheartedly."

You stared deeply through each other - on one hand, here you were inciting him towards something that could get the both of you, nay, the whole squad pruned - on the other hand, you were desperately begging for the double-digit future stamen to heed your advice and reclaim all the Children's birthright.

"Why this cripple? Why me?" Hiro breaks off his gaze and extricates himself from your grasp.

"Because you are a symbol, Hiro. You are a symbol for all the Children. Where you go, they will all follow. It matters not if you are not actually capable of soaring into the sky - it is only necessary to stir the other Children to."

"Then what do I do, Futoshi?" Hiro asks of you.

"We lay low. We continue planning. We keep our losses low. Then we'll fix things, waiting for our opportunity. We'll reclaim our birthright as Children. You keep yourself safe. I'll advise you." You instruct Hiro.

Hiro nods slightly at your counsel and leaves the library, presumably to go to sleep.

Your desire to have things done simply is, necessarily, by whatever malevolent cosmic forces that existed in the universe, thwarted. A nasty glare coming from under an all-too-familiar forehead felt as if it were grazing against your own.

Aurelius truly was a remarkable man to have imparted such a degree of calmness onto you that you'd been able to tolerate this for four years or so counting. The arthropod-like presence of Code 196 makes itself known - green eyes truly belonged from her.

You gave your usual deadpan, that eternal fortress against that jealous green dual metaphorical trebuchet with which she launched flustered projectiles of contempt.

Seriously, just a momentary exchange on the porch. Well, the issue lied with Code 196 herself, but in all honesty... it was tedious.

Depending on how things turn out she may be our pistil.

In canon Futoshi's original pistil Kokoro decides to switch partner's and as a result Ikuno and Futoshi become partner's even though neither would bother to give the other the time of day.

Also the reason why she is so pissed is because she's in love with Ichigo and can't become her partner because of how the franxx work. Also because Ichigo loves Hiro and not her.

And finally we'll need all of our comrades on board if we decide to actually rebel so the more the merrier. Aso getting Ikuno to calm her tits and not be such a jerk would be helpful.

Nothing escapes your gaze if you're actually bothered enough to give it. Nothing escapes it, not Hiro, not humanity's past, not even Papa. You've decided to pry into Code 196's mind and get an opinion regarding Stamens out of her - and she will give an opinion, whether she wants to or not.

"Have you got an idea of who you want to be your future Stamen in the Franxx, Code 196?" Your question completely catches her of guard - a mixture of horror and stress seem to paint themselves on her face. Your question was like like the gaze of Medusa. She hesitates to answer.

"You realise what happens to parasites who can pilot in the Franxx, do you?" You press the question on her. Oh, how you could relish that breaking down of her every day.

196 finally attempts to answer your question:
"I-I never..."

You give her an 'encouraging' stare:
"I want to be the stamen."

You smiled internally. That answered your questions. That also gave you some useful ammunition to keep her in check. You supposed you could torture her further by pressing specifically which one of the boys of P13 she wanted - or rather 'did not mind' - being her stamen. That wouldn't be very nice of you but.

"Well answered. Well answered. Do you know who I want my pistil to be?" You stated.

That utter shivering of terror on 196 was so sweet. You could get used to spooking her.

[] Give an unnerving silence.
[] "I want her to be professional. I most certainly don't want her to be too aloof. I want her to actually put her literacy to a meaningful purpose."

Care

---

You decide to voice openly to Ikuno about what your preferred type of pistil is:

"The thing I'm look for in a pistil is a relatively level-headed girl. I want her to calm at all times. I want her to confident with command, because where I intend to go, I intend to use tactics rather than brute strength alone. I want my pistil to have enough power to carry me wherever I want, whenever I want. And above all, I want a pistil that cares about me. Whenever I'm tired, I want to be able to lean on her. She'll have eyes for me and eyes for me alone. She'll never look at another stamen. It would be so wonderful to have a pistil like that, don't you think?"

Whatever you said, Code 196 then promptly stormed out of the library The beginning of tears were already beginning to drip down her face...

You ponder for a moment what it was all about.

Of course: 015. Code 196 probably projected those qualities onto 015.

Jealous little bookworm. Well, more books to read with her away. Couldn't exactly complain too much.

---

Breakfast passed. The usual chatter came from the boys. Hiro and you somehow managed to share some small talk - Code 326 glanced at you talking with Hiro. Maybe it was intentional or maybe it was accidental - either way, unless it was talking to 056, you supposed Hiro starting a conversation with anyone else was a noteworthy event.

Ikuno was noticeably absent. The chatter from the girl's table was noticeably hushed. Even as you ate, you already began to feel a glance of reprehension or two from their table.

Honesty, restarting Garden antics after all these years?

Now, where to spend the last hours of the morning...

You decide to spend your time in the library. It's finally free of a not-exactly friendly presence, at least for the day. No need to stay too confined in the Futoshi Corner. Might as well revel in your temporarily conquered space for a little bit as well. The Futoshi Corner expands a bit, seizing vital lebensraum, as it invades the rich expanses of Code 196's little library tsardom, in a wonderful Drang nach Osten! Maybe now you go spread yourself in a slightly more comfy reading position.

Ka-thonk! The heavy doors of the library are forced open.

"Code 214. What did you say to Ikuno earlier in the morning?"

The sight of Ichigo storming into the library, with all her shortness... to be frank, it could be a bit unnerving...

Futoshi wins against Ichigo
---

"It seems the subject of my discussion with her has just entered this room." You give a slight smile, clasping your fingers as you try your breath. "Specifically, I was talking about the type of pistil I would be interested in as my partner in the Franxx. We're in the same squad together. Both of us are possible NCO candidates. You're intelligent enough that you want to hide behind youth fiction novels. You were enough of a positive influence in the Garden that things didn't completely go down the gutter over the years. On the basis of the facts, I think we'd make an excellent stamen-pistil pair, wouldn't we?"

Ichigo was plainly shocked by the sudden and very honest nature of your argument. For some reason she was reddening.

[]"Nevermind the joke." A double-digit pistil would just be bottlenecked by a triple-digit stamen.

At this point, beet red, Ichigo acknowledges your argument as a joke, immediately fleeing from the library, quite very possibly confused by what transpired there.

Well, you got your peace in the library for the time being.

It really was a meaningful question however: Who did you want to your pistil? The Franxx could not be piloted alone.

---

Noon comes. Lunch is noticeably peculiar - Codes 015, 056 and 196 are not present.

The remaining ones' chatter: consisting of 016, 326, 390, 556, 666 and 703's is all rather hushed.

There's no doubt that the mood in the common room is somewhat hostile is you scratch below the surface, at least on the part of the girls. Hushed whispers, glances, fear, suspicion, seem to be animating the chattiness of the afternoon. There is so much that the girls want to say, probably about what transpired between Ikuno, Ichigo and you, yet being the creatures they were, they didn't quite have the heart to speak it out loud.

...Not the least when the potential subject of such a discussion was sitting right in front of them.

There was an element of not wanting to rock the boat - maybe even fear. Your presence was beginning to be more than repellent - relaxing like nothing happened was beginning to make you become a more noticeable and assertive figure.

Futoshi fails

---

You attempt to eavesdrop on 326 and 666, both of whom who share your room. You sneak to the entrance of the room.

You lean onto the door.

"...-o and Futoshi-" you hear 326's voice.

Zorome, in his pyjamas, manages to jerk the open.

"Oi! You listening in on us?"

You slacken your face, pretending to be a moron:

"Eh, tired. Tired, tired, tired." You fake an attempt at clumsily crawling into your bed.

Zorome tries to press it, harassing you by tugging at the sheets, but it doesn't seem too serious for him to keep at it. He eventually finds another thing for his little mind to yap on about, as Mitsuru cracks a very forgettable dry joke.

You fade to sleep.

Had it been the girls', it might have went rather wrong...

>>
>>2616982
By the time the 2 of them meet again, we should end up trying to help in restoring Hiro’s memories somehow, or end up telling Zero-Two about Hiro sudden personality shift (aka the mindwipe). If we can score friendship points with Zero-Two early on and find out a way to restore Hiro’s memories faster than canon it will help out our rebellion plans.

Anyhow what is your take on what we should do when Zero-Two and Hiro had their first ride? Try to prevent Mitsuru’s ride with Zero-Two? Figuring out a way to have Zero-Two know for certain that Hiro is her darling. Un-do Hiro’s mindwipe somehow. Shutting down Ichigo’s attempts of getting in between Hiro and Zero-Two. Somehow don’t get too invested in Kokoro, removing the /u/ from Ikuno?

[] Loyalty: Go into the woods. { DC 6}
>>
>>2617101
Well unfortunately I've never watched DITF outside of what some anons talk about here and there, so I'm fumbling blindly in the dark on that front.
As for having Zero-Two know for certain that Hiro is her darling, we may have to get her to open up to us which is going to be hard for certain since she is most definitely hiding behind a fake personality. Undo'ing Hiro's mindwipe is something that is probably not going to happen by our hand but rather the relationship between Z-2 and Hiro.
As for shutting down Ichigo, well we just got to channel our superior fatness and intellect to get her to blush like a madwoman, shouldn't be too hard to do.
Kokoro? Well nothing says that we can find a different grill to ride.
As for removing the /u/ from Ikuno, we gotta get it into her mind that the girl she loves does not love her back, and actually take charge and be a MAN.

(5-1)*10+3=43 against 1*10=10 - Futoshi wins at Skill Charm

---

You detach yourself from Code 556's words or rather their emotional impact. You take them to to their logical conclusion, priming them to be thrown back right at.

"Your emotional thinking was always your greatness weakness, Code 556."

"Kokoro! Call me by my name Ko-" She struggles against your attempt to reduce her to a number - which in the end, everybody would be if you didn't do something about it.

"Code 556, you held the children of the Garden together when we were in our darkest moments. When Hiro returned that night, changed, broken, you kept us hopeful. You comforted your fellow children, quelled their fears and kept them going on when the only thing left for them was despair. In face of the Elixir injections, the prunings, the kidnappings and the harassment the caretakers inflicted upon us Children, you kept our morale up. Thus in preserving our spirits, you truly were a Madonna. However, it is precisely because you were this inviolable Madonna that you are completely unworthy of being the future Pistil of any Stamen worth their salt."

You conquered Code 556's utter attention - she was bound by your words. Now, she would learn - you would tax her mind.

"The three main reasons why you are an ineffectual Pistil are thus - your compassion yields to unwarranted mercy - the hopes you promise are at times too lofty to be realised - your humility tends to self-negation.

Firstly, you've always been too kind to the imperfections and blunders around you. When you did your first neural simulations, you were hesitant at times to defeat the given enemies, those virtual klaxosaurs. Thus you've let compassion get in the way of the end objective - you conflate means with ends.

Secondly, whatever comfort you gave to the fellow Children in the Garden could not save from their fates. You told many of them that they would make it, that they would survive. That has been tested and we have witnessed the results - Squad 13 is indeed a tight-knit group with bonds that could only have been born from surviving together.

Thirdly, given all this, what are you but a comfort blanket? You've nurtured things quite a lot, but in the end, they don't make it anyway. It's a very fitting thing you are good at gardening - the flowers don't survive. Yet that is the only thing you have - a fatuous obsession with nurturing things that reduces you nothing more than lowly soil.

You're too kind, you're too weak and because of these two things, you're a nobody.

With all of this, I don't think that you are worth becoming the best Stamen I could possibly be for."

Her face was softening, undermined by your words - which were somewhat overly harsh in hindsight.

You couldn't afford stay in the forest. You decided to return to the mansion for breakfast by yourself, leaving Kokoro with her thoughts.

---

It was breakfast.

It was breakfast.

Kokoro was noticeably absent. Ichigo, Ikuno and Code 390 were present at their tables. Code 390 was trying to liven up the mood, with occasional interjections but to no avail.

You could've sworn that Code 056 gave your a concerned look at least once or twice.

You finish your breakfast.

Everybody. We may end up acting like a complete dick but the plantation squad needs to address and overcome their flaws and that needs a wake up call.

>Ikuno needs to realize that while she may love Ichigo she needs to learn how to work and at the very least form more then a cursory bond with a stamen, a friendship will suffice.
>Hiro is dead on the inside and needs something to rekindle his drive.
>Kokoro is too kind and needs to grow some resolve.
>WE needed to stop being a fat fuck who was too full of self loathing and dependenacy to be useful. Although now we need to rally the children together and that may require a more even handed approach than just roasting them. Although it is fun.
>Ichigo needs to be more honest with her real emotions and learn to ride (and maybe love) someone else.
>Goro needs to learn to be more assertive and lay it out on the line like a fucking man.
>Miku and Zorome need to chill the fuck out and start acting more mature.

You decided to go and take a seat on the porch, with a view to letting your thoughts wander in the sweet, fresh sunlight, dancing through the leaves of the woods.

Were you excessive? Were the words you had with Kokoro, Ichigo and Ikuno wrong? Were you bringing Squad 13 to breaking point even before you would become full Parasites in three years or so?

The answer, for the most part, remains the same - you're only acting how you the way you could. Maybe it would be beneficial to think about them further at a later date, but as you saw it, you were pretty content with your actions. Surely anybody else in your position would've done the same.

You hear footsteps on the porch - loud, hard, heavy, masculine, yet distinctly gentle.

Kokoro has a point. We haven't read Machiavelli, but to paraphrase his entire chapter, "It is better to be feared than loved, but never hated".

Going to have to tone down the roasting because we're running into hated territory here.

Also, being fat is still a character parameter. The end goal doesn't need to be Thintoshi, I personally will be voting for Sig Curtis, since I'm tired of reading quests with bishonens.

If a person goes around freely offering their most precious possessions, do they have any right to complain when someone sees utility in it and so takes it away from them?

"Yes indeed, Goro. I fully intend on building my rapport with Ichigo over the next couple of years with the view of being paired with her as Stamen and Pistil together. We will study military history together that we may function as a truly capable leader duo. In tandem, we will lead P13 to glory in the name of Papa. The Klaxosaurs shall be pacified and peace will return to the Earth." You honestly admit to Goro - save the Papa bit and the associated propaganda...

"Ah, well then. Do be nice to her, won't you, Futoshi?"

With a light smile, Goro stands up and returns to the mansion. The footsteps had a certain lightness to them.

[x] Go find Hiro and request assistance regarding Ichigo.

We only conspire with Hiro at night, however as he is now he is basically useless.

We should try to build up squad P13 as a efficient fighting force on par with the 9's. So that we can have access to more military resources in the future.

Open rebellion against ape will be difficult, we will need Dr Franxx on our side and we will need to be able to defeat the 9's in open combat. We will need to capture garden to stop new Parasite recruits from join Ape's number.

But most importantly we must crush APE leadership. As far as we know they have uploaded themselves to computers that are on a space station so we will need to either cut off communications between earth and orbit or destroy that space station.
All adults in plantations must be exterminated.

We must reconcile with the klaxhime and stop taking magma energy. She probably has the technology to fix the earth and make and liveable. Also we know that coastal areas are still liveable from the beach episode.

Fatoshi will eventually need to remove Hiro from the leadership equation via purge and establish a dictatorship of all children whilst he recreates the humanity he saw in his readings of war and peace and the Art of War.

---

You leave the mansion, making your way onto the dirt path. Hiro is probably wandering around in the woods, his mind wandering just as badly. You supposed that it was time for a small trek.

---

You finally come across Hiro.

"Hiro." You call out to him.
"Futoshi."
"For the sake of our plan, I've decided that I am going to get close to Ichigo as possible. I am going to to give whoever arranges the pairs as much reason as possible to assign me to her as her Stamen. In order to do that, I need to build some kind of working relationship with her. Since Ichigo has always fawned on you from when she was little, may I ask that you somehow bring her into the library at night so that we could have a conversation with her?"

Hiro paused to take your words in.

"Of course, Futoshi."

Dinner came along. Kokoro, Ichigo and Ikuno were finally present. However, chatter is noticeably hushed.

Ichigo wants to be Hiro's partner. However we already know he can't pilot, however the dumb bitch will want to try to pilot with him anyways.

However we do not want to be the leader of the parasites yet. Ichigo is perfect as a figure head.
So we will

>promise ichigo can pilot with hiro (which won't matter because Hiro will want to pilot with Zero-two
>when that happens we will swoop in and take ichigo cause she will be heartbroken.
>we must cure Ikuro's lesbian tendencies and pair her with goro.

On second thoughts, it's not necessarily true that you want to pilot the Franxx with Ichigo. Indeed, given the current social situation, it would be outright inflammatory to act on it.

No, no. You facepalm yourself. Whatever mad forces of nature were out there, you've been riled up recently. Maybe Papa has a Papa all his own and that Papa-Papa is driving people - yourself included mad. Indeed, it feels like so much has been done in so little. Your thoughts have flown everywhere, often causing you to react in the most extreme of ways.

Well, if there is a Papa-Papa out there, you feel like begging him to let you think more about your actions - maybe even have the opportunity to think outside the box or restrain yourself from the more extreme ones.

You somehow feel as if you wish has been granted.

You shake the thoughts out of your head.

You hear light giggling just outside of the library. You can hear Hiro forcing a laugh or two.

Hiro and Ichigo enter the library, apparently a very happy duo. You decide to brighten the mood, shifting your focus away from doom and gloom.

"Well you two look like a good Franxx pair, patrolling the wasteland for some klaxosaurs to slay." You comment meekly. You catch Ichigo casting a wanting look at Hiro, before she regains her senses. Hiro seems momentarily confused, but plays along, replying with fake concurrence.

"It really be nice if you two could lead the Squad together, I think."

Ichigo manages to chuckle once at your suggestion.

You figure that being in the spotlight might not be the best way to do things. Ichigo is an interesting contingency plan... you've yet to reconcile the rest of the squad... but you supposed if you laid low for a while, all would be forgiven or forgotten in due time.

APE was your target, not these poor fellow children.

[] "We'll, I suppose I'll go to bed. You two enjoy yourselves."

OOC: To clarify, write-ins are always acceptable. I'm very sorry I didn't clarify that earlier. Given recent feedback, I'll give confirmation before a particularly contentious decision. As for railroading, I guess I'll try to write interactions and relationships more organically. I have to admit that writing scenarios beforehand is not ideal. Thanks.

Generally, you would ignore the trifling that came out of Code 666's mouth, but a particular line of conversation he was having with Code 326 seized your attention.

". It's really strange. I wander what's happening to me. I really don't know what happened. It never happened before. Miku smiled and then my dick got all hard."

Code 326 grunted, annoyed:
"How did you start from talking about your body to talking about your dick? How do you even make that leap? Besides, I don't want to hear about your dick anyways."

That prompted Zorome to go on the offensive, raising his high voice as he started yet another argument with Mitsuru.

"People in olden days probably would've known what was going on." You blurted out. Zorome was startled by your sudden comment.

"When did the fatty start caring about the things that people say around him?" Evidently, recent events had not completely rid you of your past reputation as a loner in the Garden.

You ignore Zorome's banter and get to the point of what you're trying to say.

"So much was available to us in the libraries when we were little. The Golden Bough was one of those books. It was written in 1890 AD. We have so much to read about. But they never seem to cover the little things. Whenever you read and expect something about human bodies, it's like someone ripped those facts right from the pages. Like someone tore them out and threw them into a fire."
