Gifted, the heroes of the modern age. Figures with such power were once considered to be mere fiction, but ever since the arrival of Scion in 1843 such things have become facts of life. At first these heroes filled the common man's heart with hope. How could one not marvel at the feats of Lady Liberty? Or cheer in unbridled joy while Hermes saves a dozen miners from a cave in in less than a second. These Gifted few were symbols of hope, that stood fast against criminality. But they were not enough. For every Armoury or Galahad, there's a half dozen Gifted who turn to crime and cruelty or are driven mad with power.

It is 1888, and Brockton bay is dying, strangling to death as the gangs and criminals swell their ranks with Gifted. Even the valiant efforts of the Protectorate are not enough to keep them at bay, all it can do is hold them back from total control.

In the poor district, deep within criminal territory. A drunkard beats his son. Not unusual in places where hope so infrequently treads.

You are Barnaby Campbell, and Father is in another of his rages. Some minor wrong was done to him at work, and as usual he takes it out on you. Apparently he finds the violence therapeutic, or at least that's what he says while he holds you against the wall and works you over. Only a madman could be so calm as he beats someone.

"Dammit boy, scream. Say something you useless sack of meat."

You've long since accepted your lot to be honest, not to say that you don't mourn your sorry state. But the constabulary have bigger problems. They always do.

A few minutes later and you're starting to get worried, he usually stops by now. You can feel blows continue to rain down upon you far past what's customary for your household.

"Ah, this isn't working. Fuck. Maybe the other will be better. Yes, he's less accustomed to it."

That gets you properly worried, and you try to stand but a swift kick to the ribs puts you back down.

"Now I get a reaction huh boy. I think I'm going to enjoy this."

Don't kill him, we're not like that.

Suck a fat one, he beat us like a drum for fun. Time we had ours.

In front of Mike? That's not something we can take back. There'll be the coppers on us for sure, even the Protectorate if they figure out we're Gifted.

Shit, yeah. Okay, I won't kill him. Just quit your whining and let me enjoy this in peace yeah?

Nobody'd blame you for laying hands on him.

Oh, your wish is my command.

Fine, you'll just scare him a little.
You stomp heavily as you walk towards him, each footstep landing heavily on the bare wooden floor. Your boots are heavy work things, and that combines with your newfound weight to make damn your footsteps damn near thunderous in tone. You take another step forwards, then Father seems to regain his wits. He charges at you and takes you off balance, pushing you backwards into the living room and pushing you against the wall. He lands a hard punch into your gut, but you retaliate with a knee to his stomach. You unfold your leg as he staggers back and land another kick to his ribs that keeps him away. The two of you meet again in a flurry of punches, your new physique is impressive but he's a Dockworker, and has built up a lot of muscle.

A hook catches you in the stomach forces you sideways, but no sound comes from your mouth. He's weaker than you now. You're still aware of the pain, you still feel the bruises and the cracked rib. But you don't react to even the most solid blows, and that's starting to intimidate him.

You see what happens next almost in slow motion, the adrenaline from the fight overrunning your mind. You reach out your right hand to grab a glass from the nearby table, while he reaches into a trouser pocket and comes out with a revolver. you push yourself forwards and grab for it, but he's too quick and you take a bullet to the shoulder. Another bullet hits your hand as it closes over the revolver, blowing off several fingers.

Yet you persist. The two of you fall backwards onto the floor, rolling and wrestling for control of the weapon. You can't let him hold onto that for any longer, you can't trust a madman with something that dangerous. You're weakening, and your right arm is engulfed in agonising pain.

You wrestle for control of the gun, both you and your father have your hands clasped about the gun. The two of you are on the floor now, you're on top of him and pushing the revolver to the side desperately. He's pushing it forwards and keeping it between you, trying to get a shot.

You can't do it, you're losing too much blood, and you're too wounded. In the end, you can't push it out the way.

You change the direction of your struggle, forcing the gun downwards before squeezing hard on the hand that holds the gun. The revolver's report damn near deafens you, and you jerk backwards as blood spurts all over the wall.

He's gone, dead.

Finally, you're all free.

Here's hoping there is more to our power than just being a muscle brute, given while brutes can be fun being one low tier enough to be damaged this heavily by a gun and left struggling in melee against someone without powers would be a pretty bad sign for our long term survival.

I suppose a low tier brute with thinker elements will be useful, though it would seem unarmed combat isn't an area where it offers much proficiency. Hopefully we either heal when returning to normal or have a solid healing factor otherwise losing most of our fingers on one hand really fucks our ability to use weapons effectively. Still here's hoping there's a bit more depth to discover about this power and how it ties into this other personality or entity we've got.

>>

I guess so, some short stories until Void Knight screws everything up with his ones and ever consuming black hole
>>
Alright, so here’s how this will work. At the end of each thread I will give you a choice between what we do next. Like this.
One bad day
Fear and loathing
Third timeline that is yet to be determined.

Occasionally there will be interdimensional fuckery a la crisis on infinite earths. Those threads will be titled Void Knight.
>>
>>2604320
I like this way of going about things. If we ever end up finishing this quest, it might very well be legendary only because fully 100% finished quests are as rare as they come
>>
>>2604320
I do not like this way of doing things. I'm pretty sure it'll feel inconsistent and unnatural, and I'll get salty when anons don't vote for the timeline I want. Nonetheless, I'll tough it out because I trust in your writing skills.
>>
>>2604361
Yeah, this seems like a really unfocused way of handling things. I'd personally really rather go with just a single universe rather than a multitude of different timelines that we're constantly shuffling between.
>>
>>2604361
>>2604370
Fair enough, the other option is we stick with this one. And then eventually the multiverse stuff will happen, but you retain control of this Barnaby.
>>
>>2604320
I like the crisis of infinite bets , the issue that I’m having with it it’s that we will change barnabys faster that you can say hot dog , then having the character die and feel like we accomplished nothing
>>
>>2604394
I like this premises though, I've never done anything like this before and it'd be exciting to see how we fuck up multiple universes till all those fuck ups collapse into each other.

There exist a legend, when multiple parahumans named "Barnaby Campbell" all fuck up at the same time. When this occurs an anomaly happens and these universes collapse in on each other, creating the Worm Multiverse
>>
>>2604401
Not really, I predict that each barnaby will work like a Life. Once Void Knight fucks everything up and all of these universes become one we'll have multiple Barnabys at once
>>
>>2604415
Or we could do this, where each Barnaby is a life, and if you run out of barnaby’s the quest ends.
>>
>>2604394
Personally I'd prefer sticking with each timeline for a bit and getting to a better stopping point, essentially give them an arc then swap over. Though even with that it seems best to keep it to just the three timeline approach (plus the occasional tie-in with Void Knight stuff).
>>
Is void knight just our alternate universe evil form?
>>
>>2604394
Why are you dropping black hole Barnaby? Was it just too fucked? Because you could've made it so it wasn't too fucked. Make it so not as many people died, it's barely even a retcon since you haven't written the consequences of the roll yet.

While I definitely wasn't a fan of the idea initially, I've taken a bit of a breather and got my thoughts organized past knee jerk saltiness.

You're gonna have to take this one buddy, I gotta tag out.

Wait, what?

Yeah, If you don't take over here I'm gonna die soon. Sorry. Just call when you want me back.

Jack blacks out, and Barnaby awakens. Mom and Mike watch as the man before them shrinks down, losing muscle mass and height until the gangly teenage boy returns. They move forwards once you've changed, but slowly and clearly terrified from the fight. Then they move, Mom grabs you and pulls you into a hug as Mike stands back, still clearly shocked by Father's death.

You're still bleeding, but it slows as your transformation completes. You'd heard of Gifted who could regrow parts of their bodies, but it seems like you've no such luck. Your pinky finger is gone, and your ring finger's tip is missing too.

"Oh christ, call a doctor Mike." Mom's tone is shaky as she covers the bullet wound in your shoulder, shaking your younger brother of his malaise. He turns to head out but stops at the entrance to the living room, giving you enough time to...

Get him to stop, you can't go to a proper hospital. They might have tests for if you're Gifted. The old man from the apartment above you says he was a medic in the army.
Get him to stop, it'd be safer if you went with him. better to only make one trip.
Get him to stop, you'll handle this yourself. All you need is some bandaging.

Gerald Higgs is an older man, who spent a lot of time in the army before settling down with his family. These days he lives off of his savings mostly, and patches people up if they get hurt. He's also mentioned more than once that you could just ask if you needed help, so you reckon that this probably counts. He paid you and Mike to help him with housework sometimes as well, so you're pretty well acquainted.

The three of you stagger out of the front door and into the stairwell, Mom holding you up and helping you to walk. Upon leaving, you can see almost the whole building looking out of doorways or clustered in the hallway outside your door, fear and anger on their faces. There's the Andersons from downstairs, the patriarch of which is standing outside with his two sons, a shovel in his hands. Mr Holden is there with his boys as well, brandishing wooden clubs. That's just the people you're familiar with too, you can see a good three or four other families as well, women and children looking on as the men ready themselves for action.

And at the front of it all is Gerald, a single barreled shotgun held tightly in his hands.

The crowd seems surprised when you exit, and their expressions quickly change from fury to relief as they look on at the three of you.

"Oh thank god they're okay."
"They aren't, look at Barnaby."
"What kind of bastard turns a gun on his family?"

Then Higgs intervenes, getting everyone back on track.
"What are you waiting for? The boy's been shot, get him up to my apartment."

Unfortunately for you, there's an unfortunate side effect to walking into a room full of people.
Higgs dotes on his daughter, if she were hurt he'd lose his mind to grief
Mr Anderson's a coward, a good loud roar would frighten him off. But he does even worse with pain.
Holden did something when he was younger that he's kept secret his whole life, imply you know what it is.

Your mind keeps telling you these terrible things, practically screaming how you ought to go about terrifying the lot of them, so much so that you're having trouble focusing enough to put one foot in front of the other. It feels like your head's going to explode from the sheer insistence of the thoughts..

You focus on your laces, shutting out the voices as you're pulled up the stairs by Higgs. The crowd moves in to help as well, sitting the other members of your family down and helping to calm them. One family brings out mugs of coffee for the two of them, and they reassure them both. "Don't worry love, he'll be alright."
"Yeah, Barnaby's a tough kid, he'll pull through just you see."
"Gerald needs his space, best you stay down here while he works on your boy."

Then you're through into Higgs' living room, the old medic pulling you down on a moth-eaten couch while he buzzes about getting some tools. He returns about a minute later, with a bag of what you assume to be medical appliances and a bottle containing a green liquid.
"I would normally use the whisky, but I got my hands on some Absinthe a while ago and thought it might work better for something like this. Now open up, you don't want me operating on you without it I assure you."

You comply, taking a swig of the unfamiliar alcohol and spluttering, coughing as the man above you laughs. "Yeah, that's the spirit lad. I was wondering if I could get anyone to actually drink that stuff. Heh."

He removes your shirt, handing it back to you as he heats the end of a needle.

"Now bite down on that, this is going to hurt a bit."
It really does, more than you expected actually.

The surgery takes a while, your fingers are easy to sew back up but your shoulder is a bit more difficult for the man. Luckily the bullet came out the other side so he doesn't have to remove it, but it does mean that Higgs has to sew up the exit wound as well as the entrance.
"You're bloody lucky you know, half an inch to the right and you'd have bled out."

"Have you thought about what you'll tell the coppers? What's your plan lad? You know that someone will have called them by now right, gunshots travel farther than most people think."

I'm not telling them anything, I have to leave. I'm Gifted, and if they figure that out then i'll be press ganged by someone, it's too dangerous for me to stay here with Mom and Mike.
I have to leave, I can't tell you why, but I do.

The Undersiders are considered villains but they only fight other gangs. The problem with this is having to deal with Coil.

ABB is a no because we aren't chinese. E88 doesn't exist yet, or at least they must be composed by a group of nationalist (like in the new york gangs were there is a group against the foreigners taking their jobs). We could start our own gang to?

*cough* or anti-hero *cough*

Instead of simply repelling villainy, we can end it at its roots by systematically disassembling both them and their plans with our powers.

There is no such thing as a "villainous" power. Nor is there such a thing as a "heroic" power. Powers are just tools and no tool subscribes to morality in itself.

for example as a little tidbit, in this universe both Eidolon(The Suzerain) and the Slaughterhouse nine are dead.
>>
>>2605638
I'd be down to join the undersiders or a similar group.

ABB has problems beyond only letting in asians, they are one of the more vicious gangs what with kidnapping people for human trafficking and selling their organs on the black market. E88 presumably is some other white nationalist group and honestly might not even be as villainous in the public eye as this is during the time where it is more the norm as unpleasant as that might be, that said most of us have more modern sensibilities OOC so it seems best to avoid that route.

>>2605642

That's more the vigilante route in this universe, not necessarily evil but not strictly heroic either given you are brutally murdering people most of the time and entirely ignoring any legal process or culpability.

Yes, definitely tell them. We can decide who we want to join once we know who all the local players are and which are open to new recruits.

The "vigilante" does not fall into the hero-villain spectrum. A hero is defined as an individual who struggles against another individual that society has deemed a villain.

I'm talking about the anti-hero. Most anti-hero's ARE vigilantes, but let's be honest. Heroes uphold a legacy of being vigilantes. No one predicted they would exist in the future and started mapping papers and forms to fill, then devised an exam for people with powers to legally use their powers. No legal permission = vigilante.

Either way, anti-heroes have their place on the hero-villain spectrum. They are heroes by definition, but they don't abide by that moral flavor text that has come to be associated with the word "hero".

Endbringers are meant to appear, but just fuck with travel between nations to cause people to not move as much, causing people to cluster together, and create more friction tension and conflict for the shards. Eidolon wanted worthy opponents, so his Eden shard woke up the Endbringers to fuck shit up all over the world to keep him busy and occupied, and they calmed down once he got Scion'd.
>>
>>2605692
So someone or something killed Eidolon and so avoiding the birth of the EB. Then someone else reduced the stress by killing the S9?

They're not comming, Anon. Not with Eidolon out of play
>>

We'll see I suppose, it definitely makes it less likely but I wouldn't rule it out. If we're using this line of thought it rules out Scion being an issue anytime soon as Jack Slash was the one required to really push him to his genocidal tantrum.

>>2605686
Would it be common knowledge how the S9 were brought down, and who or what killed Eidolon?
>>
Since the Endbringers are out of the way (while we are in this timeline at least) can we all agree that the origin "reveal" of the Endbringers was dissapointing and that Scion's origin was way better?
>>
>>2605709
This universe’s Siberian killed The Suzerain(Eidolon)

The Inventor(this universe’s version of Hero) is credited with their deaths.
>>
>>2605719
The Inventor still lives, and is active in New York at the moment.
>>
>>2605712
Yeah the endbringers got a little shafted unfortunately with how much they were tied into Eidolon. I wouldn't say it makes them boring or anything like that though, especially given they clearly are more than just their programming with what we see from the Simurgh. Hopefully they have some presence in Ward as things progress and ramp up with that.

Well to be fair, Manic was a gang leader with robberies, break ins, and multiple murders to his name. Definitely a lot of good karma near the end but that still just evened out and we just didn't get the chance to pull crimes after the protectorate got attacked because reboot.

"I'll tell them the truth, everyone knows he beat us silly. And you all saw my injuries."

He looks you in the eye for a second before smiling and pushing you back into a lying position. "I'll talk to the others, put it around that you want them to back you up. You stay here until the coppers arrive, you'll need your strength." He pulls on a coat before heading towards the front door. "If you need something to drink there's cordial in the pantry, I'll send your mother and brother up as well."
And with that he's gone, headed back downstairs to talk with the building's other residents.

You try and stay awake but the pain, alcohol and post surgery numbness all contribute to an overwhelming sense of tiredness so you slip into a deep sleep not too long after he leaves. You awaken, but not in the same place you were before. You're sat on a comfortable armchair as you look around the room. It's a small living room, nearly cut in half by a marble table in the centre, one half white and one half black. Your side of the room is spotless, nearly spartan while sat opposite you is Jack. You, but taller, more muscular and with a cocky grin on a face framed by brown sideburns. his side of the room has mold on the walls and is filled with the smell of cheap booze and sweat.

"Hey buddy, you still alive?"

"Yeah I'm good, The guy upstairs was a medic in the army so, you know."

"I get it, can't trust doctors in the hospitals. Bastards, the lot of them."

"That's not what I meant."

"It's what you were thinking, deep down. They've gotta have tests for the Gifted right? Why wouldn't they make that public though?"

"I'm not here for conspiracy theories Jack."

"Then why are you here?"

I need your advice, the police are coming and I don't know how to hide us from them. If they figure out we're Gifted, we're toast.

I can deal with the police, but I don't know what to do after. We're going to need money to pay our landlord, and my job in the butchers won't pull in enough on it's own. I have to step up for my family now.

True, Siberian shouldn't exist if the endbringers never existed given the Simurgh did affect Manton. That aside if things happened on a similar timescale the endbringers should have been active for a while before the Suzerain's death. This definitely raises more questions.

"I don't know what to do after this. We're gonna run out of money without father's wage from the factory, and I don't think I can pull in enough from the butchery job. What do I do?"

"Oh, that's easy. All you gotta do is waylay people in the streets, if you let me do it then nobody'll ever connect us. Piece of piss and I'll get my fun."

You give it a quick thought, then quickly discard the possibility. A super-powered mugger would attract too much attention from the Protectorate, which would compromise your ability to provide for your family. It would also most likely be ineffective, as your best chance of escaping capture would be to operate in poor neighbourhoods, thus reducing your take.
"No, that wouldn't make us enough money. And it'd be immoral. Any other ideas?"

"I could beat the piss out of criminals instead, riskier if they catch us. But the payoff'd be worth it if we found a stash." He leans forwards in his seat as he continues. "We'd just have to scare 'em a bit, and I'm good at scaring people."

That might work but it's still pretty risky, just with a potential greater payoff.
"I'll have to give it some thought, it's still dangerous."

"O'Course, let's not be hasty. You have to speak to the coppers first. It'd be like something from the penny dreadfuls though, by day he's a simple butcher, but by night he becomes Jack... and stalks the streets in search of victims. It'd be grand."

"Why do you call yourself that? Jack. I never named you, and you're part of me right?"

"No, I call meself that, cos it's my name. Obviously."

"Yeah, but how do you know it's your n-"

"Sorry mate, you're out of time. Just as a parting shot though." Everything's falling darker now, the room fading away as you return to consciousness. "Next time you call me out, I'll need a knife."

The room fades out around you until all you can see is Jack, and then it fades even further. The last thing you can see is his smile.

And then you awaken, someone is shaking your shoulder rather firmly.

Maybe it's also that having non tinker powers means we worry about time management less.

Well tinker/power talk was always a big part of discussion, like what to make or build. Plus the beginning was when we were talking more on what we'd do as the character, Barnaby's path and such. Now we're in a weird place where we're midquest but also starting anew too. There's just not much to discuss just yet because we just started out jekyll barnaby and we probably won't get back to Manic or Void till somewhat later. Discussion will likely pick back up more once we're further in this timeline and start to see how things connect.

"Mr Higgs?"

"Not quite." The answer comes in a somewhat deeper voice than you were expecting, and you slowly open your eyes as you recover from your slumber. When you do awaken properly and rub the sleep out of your eyes, you're faced with a sight you were certainly expecting, just not quite this soon. There are two police officers in the room, one is talking quietly in the corner with mom while the other stands above you, and slowly pulls you up into a seated position. "You alright there lad? you look pretty banged up."

"As good as can be, considering."

He lets out an awkward laugh at that, and sits down on an armchair opposite you. He's older than the other police you've seen about, with a thin moustache and spectacles. "My name is Officer Davies, the detective will be here in a moment, we're just finishing up with the other tenants. I thought it best to wake you, make sure you were at a hundred percent before we interviewed you."

"Thanks."

A cup of coffee courtesy of Mom later, and the lot of you look over as the door opens and a man in a smart blue suit comes through. He's tall and well built, wearing a bowler hat and detectives badge. This must be the interviewer. He takes out a notebook, flips forwards a few pages and sits down, the other policeman having vacated his seat. He's younger than the others and has a goatee instead of a moustache, the thick beard making him look a bit older than you'd guess from his facial features and skin. He's always resented his brother, imply that he can't measure up. His brother is a public figure, so he'll assume that you know who he is. "Good afternoon, I am Sergeant Wallis. I'm led to believe you're the son of the deceased."

"Yes, my name's Barnaby."

"Campbell I presume."

"Yes sir."

"Well, I'm going to ask you a few questions Barnaby, and I'd like you to answer as honestly as possible. Firstly I'd like you to go over the events of today, start whenever you'd wish."

And so you retell the events of the day, starting with your return from work and ending with your father's death. You edit it somewhat, keeping your Gifted nature out of the events. He continues to examine you afterwards, asking more questions and repeating them every so often, but the answers you give seem to satisfy him after a while. Apparently having a whole building full of witnesses works well for your credibility. It's almost two hours later by the time the two of you are finished, and he stands up before continuing. "Normally now I'd take you into the station, but given how open and shut the case is, not to mention your wounds, I shall instead be taking your picture and fingerprints here. You will receive a date for your hearing soon, most likely by post." He calls the other policeman over and pulls a strange device from his pocket, handing it to him. "Take his prints while I set up the machine won't you Davies, it's a bit temperamental."

Officer Davies nods and instructs you to place your hand on the glass front of the device, it glows an unsettling green as you do, but the older policeman holds your hand in place. The whole thing only takes a few seconds but it's still rather queer. The sergeant pulls out another strange device, a small metallic square with what appears to be a lens on the front. "How's this thing work again... wish Dragon'd put some instructions on these bloody things. Now how do I... Ah, wonderful."

You're still smiling as the light in front of you flashes, melancholy as it is. Detective Wallis looks over afterwards, clearly irritated so you say the first thing that comes to mind as an explanation.

"Sorry, its just... I'm finally free. We were never good enough for him you know? He'd demand the impossible, and when we couldn't live up to that he'd..."

His head whips up as he hears that, hands still pressing buttons on the back of the device. He's looking at you with a strange expression on his face, halfway between anger and melancholy as the device hums and creaks.

Your power says that's enough, but you keep talking, you don't even know why. But it feels right to get this off your chest.
"But you probably never had to worry about that, I mean look at you. You're a police Sergeant, you catch bad guys and save people's lives, chasing diamond thieves and the like, your dad probably loves you."

He's speechless, staring you straight in the eye as he absentmindedly puts the machine away in his bag and turns away, pulling on his coat and hat as he prepares to leave. Just before the door closes, he turns back to you and speaks.

"You... Don't have to have a good father to be a good man Barnaby. It just helps. It'll get better from here on out." His hand lingers for a moment on the doorframe before he drums his fingers and turns to leave. "You did a brave thing today, probably saved your mother's life. The bastard never deserved you."

Then he's gone. And the others leave with him.
Your family and Mr Higgs enter the room not long afterwards, and the four of you eat dinner together while they clear downstairs. That night when you get to sleep, the house feels bigger. More comfortable.

You dream of an armoured Knight, the man you wished would save you.

You awaken the next day, to an expected conundrum.

Specifically, you need money. It's the Tuesday the second of April 1888, and you need money. You've been scrounging your portion of your wage for a few weeks now, but you need a good thirty or so dollars by the end of the week and your job at the butcher pays you two dollars and ten cents a day. You can round that down to just two dollars if you get breakfast from the pie lady on the way in.

Your dad's wages from the week are a no show, considering the police took his body. But you do find a few dollars under one of the floorboards in the bedroom. It's a bit, but not enough.
Luckily Mr Holden takes credit for the food he sells, but he'll still want it by the friday.

Status: Not so good, you're low on cash.
Money: Three dollars and ten pence. (-25 dollars for food rent and heating every friday)
Jack: Calm
Inventory: An old ratty coat, really nice steel toed work boots.

Go to work, it's time consuming, but it's honest and pays pretty well for an apprenticeship.
Head to the North Market, Jack said he wanted a knife and you need something if the house gets broken into.
Stalk the streets as Jack, maybe a little bloodshed will appease him. Depending on where you go, you could get a lot of money.
Find some gangsters, there's plenty around. They should carry more money than normal people right?

You decide to pop by the market on your way to work, it's on the way even if you'll be an hour or so late. You walk hurriedly through the market stalls and shop buildings. Eventually you find your way into a surplus store, walking down the aisles of knives swords and guns. This place is a heaven, at least for your murderous passenger.

"Ooh, if we had the money I'd want the kukri, I love the designs on the handle. Shame the coppers took Dad's gun, but at least we can get a replacement here once we have the cash. Oh and check out the blade on that one, I'm a sucker for Bowie knives. You know what we need? A scalpel, I swear if you can find me one of those I'll be really in your debt."

"We're on a schedule Jack..."

Okay sure, just get me the switchblade for now, it's the only thing in our price range I'll work with.

Fuck, really? It's a full two dollars, that'd set you back a full day of work.

Buy the switchblade, he says he needs it.
You're sure that he can make do with a cheaper one.
Maybe you could nick a knife from work instead? They're proper butcher's tools.

Either way, you memorise the location at Jack's behest. He seems to be a fan.

Switchblade acquired. It's not the best knife, and you'll definitely need to replace it. but it'll do for now.

One purchased switchblade later and you find yourself sprinting to work, the cashier gave you a bit of a look at first, but you've always been careful not to wear any gang colours so he sells it to you happily. You arrive in a good fourty minutes or so late, but your boss Adam doesn't seem to care too much once you apologise. He's a pretty relaxed guy as long as you do the job right. You work until six in the afternoon, carving meat and carcasses up for the hungry masses of Brockton. It's long work with few breaks, but it does give you some time to speak with your... Friend?

"So I was asking you before, but who are you exactly? What do you want?"

To be honest? I don't really know, I mean I have a name obviously but I don't know where it came from. I know that I like guns and knives and sundry other weapons, and I love hurting people, making them squeal in fear just... I don't know. Completes me. I think I came after you though, you're the original. That's the other thing I know, I have to look after you. You needed a [PROTECTOR]."

That's kind of scary dude.

Of course it is, I'm meant to be scary.

You can't really argue with that, the rest of your time at work is spent in an uneasy silence with Jack occasionally chiming in to help your cuts. Turns out being good with knives kinda helps with your job too, and it's not long before you've made up for your absence.

You part ways later in the day, before heading onto Main street for a short stretch. Mastery and Jackanape are on patrol and you wave as they pass, suppressing your mind's advice. They're heroes after all.

You're back up to three dollars, but you only have two and a half days left now before rent is due.

This is it, your first night out as a Gifted vigilante, part of you(Jack) just wants to transform and head out but you know how this is supposed to work. If you don't want anyone to come after your family, you need a mask and a costume. That way they'll know you aren't just a madman with a knife, and if people know that Jack is a cape then they have to follow The Gentleman's Agreement. You pull on one of father's old coats, the one with the shoulder cape. Now you just need a mask. An old shirt will do, cut into a full face mask and with two eye-holes carved into it with your new knife. You cut an imposing figure, but something's missing.

Your chimney pipe hat for church is a little small on Jack's head, but not noticeably so.

"That's good actually, it'll stay on easier."

Suitably attired you and Jack turn your minds toward where to go exactly. You suggest merely patrolling the streets, but Jack shuts the idea down quickly. You need to know where you're going, or at least have a general idea.

You live in the north side of town, near the Industrial district with the rest of the poor but-not-poverty stricken, there are many small gangs here. Usually one for every two blocks or so, but they all pay tribute to the Ironclads. They're led by a Gifted named Boilerplate who builds armour for his men, and subsist by forcing tribute out of the smaller gangs in their area. They have a few other Gifted but not the fighting type apparently, so you don't know about them. Jack suggests finding a gambling den or whorehouse belonging to an affiliated gang and waiting nearby for victims, drunk men are sloppy and fearful.

The Docks are surprisingly crime free thanks to the Dockworkers Union and their Citizen Watch, but only in a small area around the Union building. They have no Gifted that you know of, just angry men desperate to keep their homes safe. But they've been the death of more than a few overzealous Villains. Jack wants to stay away for the moment, as they'd get you in trouble with the Protectorate as well.

The Protectorate are Brockton's official Government branch for Gifted individuals and exists alongside the constabulary. They patrol all across the city, but cannot challenge the gangs for fear of all out war. They advertise their Gifted like mad. It's led by Arcane, who claims to be a sorceror of old. There is also Buffalo Soldier, Kaiser and Hermes, though you can't remember their powers off the top of your head. They also have a few affiliated heroes as well, having lent their official support to Chessman, a man who can manipulate humanoid beings he refers to as "Pawns". They also officially support the two you saw earlier, Mastery and Jackanape. Mastery can give people and himself superhuman abilities, making them able to shoot beams of light or fly, even heal incredibly quickly. Jackanape can tell jokes that send anyone nearby doubled over laughing, unable to cope with the sheer hilarity.

Cont.
>>
>>2607533
>>
Now, is Jackanape actually a parahuman/gifted, or is he just incredibly funny and opting to be a hero rather than a comedian...

Chessman meanwhile fails horribly by choosing to call himself Chessman like some sort of megaman robot master. And lets not forget that Kaiser (though feasibly someone else with the same name) is a local hero. From the sound of it Arcane is Myrden, and Hermes might be an alt universe Assault though realistically if capes from other cities in the canon timeline are here it could be a wide range of potential people. Buffalo Soldier is a bit hard to pinpoint with just the name so I suppose we'll need to wait and see.

The fuck?

Then again we are a good few decades before the "Present day". Throwing out a few N words and being prejudiced against the 'lower class' probably isn't as much of a PR problem. That and the fact that Kaiser's a bottom feeder that'll do anything for power joining the 'good guys' isn't that far fetched.

Still a hell of a shock though.
>>
>>2607560
Yeah this is very much the era where open racism is the norm, where segregation is widely practiced, and where social injustices are widespread whether its based on class, race, gender, or a number of other factors.

Personally I'm just hoping Nikola Tesla is out there as high powered tinker given this is the year he started to really become well known for his introduction of AC.
>>
>>2607560
It's surprising, but not a total shock. This wasn't exactly the most pc time, everyone's at least moderately racist/tribal. As long as he wasn't lynching people in public, it'd make sense for Kaiser being capable and willing to take an official, respected role in society. Knowing him though, there's a good chance kaiser has his hand in the gangs too. Having the likable pr while manipulating both sides and form his ideal powerbase in the city sounds like something he'd do if he could.
>>
>>2607575
So Kaiser is the Coil of this timeline?
>>
Honestly it is feasible Kaiser might not even be a villain, I doubt he is a shining beacon of morality but it is feasible that this version of him is actively working within the law and doing more good than harm by a decent margin. We'll see though, worst case scenario Jack can always deliver some vigilante justice if we are going that route.
>>
>>2607588
This is /qst/ we can inly go the anti-hero or the vigilante route. Anons rarely take the villan mantle. Nothing against then doing it but makes us kinda railroad ourselfs to that path.
>>
>>2607533
The north-western part of town is where all the toffs live, and is well patrolled by police, the criminals take a different shape here. They're more insidious. Rumours speak of terrible cruelties in their mansions and estates, excess and cruelties that sate overstimulated palates. And the Police turn a blind eye or disappear into obscurity, framed for some terrible misdeed. Jack dismisses this as rumour, no doubt some of it is true but most of it is probably exaggeration by the jealous and angry. It's easy to demonise someone so utterly different that you never even see each other.

The south and central parts of the city are contested by two other gangs in a state of constant war. The Budgies on one side consist almost entirely of weak Gifted criminals who band together for defence, led by the only Gifted in the city to not have a secret identity. Hector Frye is a particularly clever devil capable of detaching his limbs and controlling them remotely, not particularly impressive at first, but he's famous for thinking up ingenious power combinations and using even the most useless of Gifts in terrifying ways. The gang itself is only fifty or so strong, but holds far more territory than one would expect for such a small group. They mostly peddle in smuggling, and they've received a reputation for being reliable black marketeers. Jack is interested, they might be useful.

The other group vying for control of Central Brockton is the Triad, which nobody was really expecting before they turned up. They only have four Gifted, but those few are obscenely powerful. They're led by Wukong, a man who can create copies of himself and fly. Then there's his companion Kuan Yin, who can heal any ailment with beams of golden energy. The two together are almost unstoppable, and so far have not lost a single battle. You also know of two more Gifted, twin brothers who control shadow. But nobody actually knows their names.

The two gangs here are locked in a stalemate, both taking and losing ground every day. It's a quiet, gentlemanly sort of war though, and few lives are lost.

The last group is the Elephant and Castle street gang led by Unstoppable and Immovable, a couple who use their power for robberies and strikes against the other gangs. They have a small group of Gifted, five are known so far. But those five have unknown powers.

And then there's you, stuck in the middle with Jack.
Go for the Ironclads, get some practise in.
Do some investigating into the posh part of town, there's got to be something going on.
Screw with the Triad, might be fun.
Attack a budgie transport, might be some good loot.
Unstoppable's boys usually hang around the train stations, maybe they've a stash nearby.p/green]

So attacking the ironclads is a bad idea because normaly causing trouble in your area is bad. Going for the rich is also bad although it might give us a pretty high loot. The budgie force us to face a group of low powered capes. The triad has only one cape so it might be less likely that we will bump into then and the elephant and street gang have a group of unknows.

You're skulking through the moonlit streets now, moving from shadow to shadow in search of prey. You hold onto your switchblade as you walk down black alleys and cross rooftops, every neuron in your brain firing in anticipation. You can practically taste the blood already. Oh no, wait. You bit your tongue. Never mind. It's taken a few hours but finally you come across a likely scene. Three men are standing outside of a small building, the door leading inside is ajar and you can smell their sin on the wind. The sounds of revelry come from inside as a man staggers out of side entrance and into the alley below you, clearly off of his face on something. You don't like to make guesses but you can see the mixture of blood and vomit that he hurls onto the pavement below him, shortly before he falls facefirst into the puddle. Clearly they serve some disgusting intoxicant cocktail here.

Now just comes the question of how to enter. The building itself is thin but tall, and consists of three separate floors with boarded windows. You could start at the bottom and head through the front door, but that would require taking care of the guards. Or you could enter at the top, through the roof access and work your way downwards. That would necessitate climbing the fire escape without drawing attention, and the guards look pretty alert.

In the end, you're going to have to kill some pricks anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

Pick off the guards outside first, quietly as well. Your greatest weapons are surprise and fear.
Walk up and say hello, then plunge a knife into one of the bastards.
Sneak in, there's an open door at the top.

Lee always hated guard duty, he could've been inside getting his dick wet and spending some of his hard earned cash, but no. Chan had to go and get caught by the fucking Chessman. What kind of fucking sissy calls themselves Chessman. Honestly losing to that guy is just embarrassing. And naturally Chan being an dumbass meant that he had to get stuck with the shit job. Lee swore, once Chan got out he was going to kick his ass six ways, rest and then find a seventh way. Jackass.

He was too absorbed with stewing in his own anger to notice that Li Wei hadn't checked in.

He thought nothing of it half an hour later when Zhang went off to check on him either, just shaking his head and telling the younger gangster to hurry up and drag him back to his post. He did however, hear the snap. Lee dashed around the corner with a knife already in hand, ready to kill whatever son of a bitc-

Then he sees the corpses, they're on the ground. Two bodies draped over each other on the ground, one with a broken neck, and the other... The other wasn't even recognisable as a human any more. It had been torn and hacked to pieces, no pieces remained of Li Wei larger than a few inches. It was like he'd been attacked by a pack of wild dogs.

Ripped to pieces.

Lee opens his mouth to scream, and a knife buries itself in his gut. So. Many. Times.

He's dead, but his corpse is being so utterly perforated that it cannot actually drop to the floor. Eventually the monster ruining his corpse has to physically hold him up to continue the slaughter. Ten minutes pass and Jack is finally finished, now for the ones inside the building.

Later investigation showed that the Ripper entered through the front.
He didn't use the front entrance though, instead he barred the door and started at the top of the building.

"Continue please Officer Wallis, we need to understand what we're dealing with."

"Of course sir. We first thought that he'd entered through the front, but it was quickly discovered to have been broken open from the inside. He used the guards' weapons to barricade it shut."

The Ripper climbs silently to the roof, twirling his knife in his hands as he stands ready to open the door.

"We think someone surprised him at the top of the stairwell, there's signs of a short struggle then well..."

"The body at the bottom."

The Ripper stabs the impudent fool twice, then boots him over the stairway's rail and down three stories to his death. The man at the bottom is rather surprised.

"There was another guard at the bottom, we found the main room on the ground floor was fortified. We assume that the guard at the bottom was one of the bodies we found in there."

"And where did he go next?"

The Ripper took the stairs down, into the rooms with the girls.

The Ripper takes the stairs down two at a time, headed down as fast as he can. He's interrupted though by three men from the second floor meeting him on the landing. He dodges a punch from the first one, but takes a club to the chest from a druggie with long hair. The third one charges him and pushes him backwards into the wall.

"There was signs of a struggle on the second floor, damaged walls and defensive wounds on the bodies there. From the damage to the wall we're guessing he's about eight feet tall, relatively broad shouldered too."

[Failed rolls can result in injury or clues during a Rampage, critical failures will result in both.]

The Ripper lifts his arms and brings them down, breaking his attacker's spine. The second takes a knife to the throat and is hurled at the last survivor, who fails to dodge out of the way in time. He's trapped beneath his comrade as the Ripper steps forwards, cracking his neck and spinning his knife.

"The bodies show signs of mutilation, they clearly irritated him but we don't think they managed to properly injure him either. He continued on to the bottom floor afterwards, they were dug in, we're still having trouble understanding how exactly he got into the main smokeroom."

"There was at least four men in there, all armed and ready for him."

The Ripper chuckles as he stands in front of the barricaded door.

We think he used one of the bodies to bash down the door.
The wall's destroyed, but what kind of madman would go through the wall.

Kaiser in 1888 has vaguely progressive modernist overtones, it's the Germanic spelling of Caesar and a kind-sorta rallying point for pan-Germanic nationalism, which is a little bit like modern globalism. Even the word Reich still has positive connotations. "Nazi" is as unknown as "Daesh" was in the 1990's.

Dunno what the QM thinks about all this, though.

The Ripper knocks on the walls, it serves two purposes. First it'll scare the piss out of the trash inside, and it also lets him find the thinnest section. The men inside are looking at the door after all. Finding a part thin enough takes only a few seconds and he quickly charges through, taking those inside by surprise. The first of the four is taken off guard and receives a switchblade through the face for his troubles screaming as his eye collapses and leaks outwards from the force. The second man inside is too scared to fight properly and his clumsy swipes with a pipe are easily deflected, the Ripper pulls the weapon away from him and beats him about the head and body with it. Crushing his head and breaking his ribs before stomping hard on his knee and shattering it. The last two attack at once. both of them swinging knives as they advance towards you.

The Ripper dodges inbetween swipes and slices as the two of them attack, they're skilled but scared. The knife, a shoddy homemade thing, is taken from the first one and buried in the second's ribs. He's young, and it's a shame he had to die, but you had to do this, it was necessary. You advance on the last soldier here, and lift him into the air before bringing your switchblade up and around. He's dead before he can hit the floor.

"It was messy, how he killed them. But efficient as well, quick unlike the poor bastards outside. he rifled through their pockets as well, but this is far too complex for just a robbery. Officer Davis thinks that he just took advantage of the situation. He could take his time now after all. He went up to the second floor after he was done."

The ripper pushes the last door open, and finds himself in a short hallway. There are six rooms on each side as well as one at the end of the corridor. He pokes his head around a doorframe and is confronted by a girl tied to a bed frame, some evil bastard on top of her. She's clearly drugged out of her mind, her skin's a deathly pallor and her eyes are sunken. She turns her head to look at his mask, and screams.

"He killed the men and freed the girls, honestly wasn't expecting it of him." The constabulary might have a description of your costume if you fail.
"He even killed the girls kept there, but no mutilation, they went quick and painless. Guess he wasn't expecting to have to deal with innocent witnesses." Injury if you fail.

The men here are intoxicated, addled by Opium and alcohol. It's an easy matter for the Ripper to carve them up, some of them fight back but they never stood a chance in their sorry states. The girls are a bit trickier of a conundrum, if the Ripper lets them go, then they might talk. He stands in the corridor, surrounded by the corpses of the slave house's patrons and spinning the switchblade in his hand. Eventually he comes to a decision.

"We found the girls locked in together in one of the side rooms. Six or so of them, but one's since died from her condition. We're still getting statements, but they're either too addled by whatever their captors were giving them, or outright thankful to their saviour. One in particular is refusing to give us anything."

"Keep pushing, this madman must be stopped."

"Easier said than done sir, apparently he's rather convincing."

Colin gets a look after that, but he perseveres. "He most likely used a mixture of intimidation, leveraging the fact he'd saved them for the ones that wouldn't work on. We might get something, but not for a while."

"And then?"

"Then he went into the main office."

Jack enters the room at the end of the corridor, the girls safely contained inside one of the side rooms. He'll alert the police when he's done here.

There's a single man inside, cowering and stuffing money into a briefcase. He's shorter and slighter than the others, clearly some form of clark or accountant, maybe the dealer. He looks a bit slight to be the man in charge though.

The Ripper stalks into the room and narrowly dodges the first punch from the man behind the doorframe. This is more like it.

He's clearly the leader of this rabble, if his fancy dress is anything to go by. He's about six foot two, and carries a curved blade, which he brings down after the punch. A boot to the chest sends him backwards into the centre of the room, but he recovers quickly and rolls to his feet.
This one might be trouble.

I love this change of pace, where we let Jack take over for Rampages, and the storytelling posts change to a mixture of the brutally efficient murder in the moments, along with the after-action reports of the shit we did from the perspective of the coppers. Getting to see how regular people or others see us and the things we do is always a great thing - it's why interludes overall, especially PHO ones, are so popular and wanted by players/readers.

"As you can see we've two other men in here, the first is a clerk. He was most likely just in charge of counting coin and went down easy, it's the other one who gave him some trouble."

Arcane looks over to the bloody mess slumped on the desk.

"Doesn't look like he found it that difficult."

"Apparently not sir."

The Ripper lets out a hideous bellow and charges, taking advantage of his foe's hesitation as he rushes forwards and brings the switchblade down on the other man's arm. The gang leader retaliates by bringing his own blade around in a wide arc, forcing the Ripper back towards the door into the study.
The room itself is a small office, with a wooden desk opposite the entrance, behind which sits a safe half full of money and drugs.

They clash a few more times, circling each other as blades and fists whip out and whistle through the air. Each exchange forces the smaller man back, and the Ripper advances.
He's thrown backwards into the desk, the Ripper's punches feel like sledgehammers and hit just as hard. He dies screaming as he's torn to pieces, the giant's blade slicing and dicing his flesh to bloody ribbons.

The clerk is crying in the corner, and dies from a kick to the temple that cracks his head like an egg. And then it's all over. The murderer calmly cleans his knife off on the armchair before gathering the money from the safe and placing it within the clerks briefcase.

"You know what they say right? Find a job you love."

"You didn't have to kill them all."

"Yes I did, or do you have a way of transporting almost twenty men to the coppers?"

"What about the sword?

The Ripper gives it a once over, bending it until it snaps in his hands.

"Piece of shit wouldn't last a night. We'll leave it here."

He left a note as well, a declaration. (of what?)
Then he left, vanishing into the night as he whistles a jaunty tune.

I like the change of pace a lot, although I wish you'd have the characters talk a bit differently, most glaringly the use of dude earlier, which would have actually been akin to calling your brother a fag or a sissy.
I'm also wondering if Jack can ever assume direct control, or start killing innocents if we ignore him or ignore our urges too much.
Otherwise I'm really enjoying this, and I like how you managed to turn a series of bad decisions and rolls into this cool thing. Props for sticking it out.

So is Void Knight going to be a villain? Since he's currently going on about consuming absolutely everything and he's also supposedly bat shit insane

Is there going to eventually be a team of Barnabys uniting and creating a Void Knight eradication team called "The Barns of the Bay"

How many original heros/villains are there going to be in this universe? Will only key heros/villains actually be present in this universe?

Yeah, you chew through unpowered goons like butter now that you've got a hnadle on things.
You've been pretty lucky with the rolls too. A DC of 35 on the D50 is a 70 on a D100 and you've been making those pretty consistently.

>>
>>2609044
Stands are actually one of my favourite representations of supernatural abilities, and now that I have a clean slate, I'll definitely be taking inspiration from Arakis work.

One of the things you may have noticed, is that the powerlevels in this universe are a bit lower than before. A guy with a big knife is a legitimate threat to you if you fuck up, and a guy with a gun can do some pretty crazy stuff.

Normal people are a much bigger threat in this universe, as you may also have seen from the description of the Dockworkers Union. They've straight up killed a few villains.
>>
>>2609074
Well in this time there's none of that 'Cops and Robber's' bullshit. Here when a man sees a jackass in a mask robbing his livelihood/threatening his family/trying to kill him he puts the fucker down.

If you're a Villain you survive by being smart, tough, and pragmatic. If you're lacking in any of the three you're a dead man.

Good. Everyone loves a underdog, and I hope the lower powerlevels leads to more creative use of abilities and environments, which imo is much better than 'my big bullshit power overwhelms your big bullshit power'

But those are a lot of fun as well, when well written.

What truly makes jojo a treasure is it's lower power levels. The power levels don't raise it just gets more interesting and creative. Lets go for a Wormiverse with a creative usage of power instead of throwing stronger people at each other till we win

I just recently started season 1 and i'm 20 episodes in, I can tell you for sure that the powerlevels have gotten very inconsistent; a jonathan-era vampire could shatter dio's shoulder with a touch, and now Joseph is killing uber-vamps no problem? But i do agree that it's fabulous as fuck and a fun ride

It had memes for years and it finally got a proper anime recently. It's an amazing series and it never really took off in the states due to copyright issues. It survived in the US only through memes and some badly translated manga until it finally got the amazing anime we have today. It's also a phenomenon in japan and the reason it didn't get a proper anime was because it was deemed "Unadaptable" at the time due to the sheer ridiculousness and perfection the series had
>>2609191
It's your basic shonen anime though. It's about a guy who punches hard and has a heart of gold. It wasn't even that bizarre of a part, that's why most consider it to take off on part 2, where the protagonist is a wise cracking badass with a much more bizarre premises and entertaining fight scenes
>>
>>2609191
>>2609189
For me, I watched some of part one and got kind of bored with it, and skipped to part four and watched all of it. That also happens to be the best part, with a small town setting and a variety of interesting and bizarre powers, many of which are used in creative and surprising ways. The powerlevels are pretty eclectic, but it holds the same theme of cunning and intelligence triumphing over raw power throughout all the parts.

Thanks for the critique, I'll try breaking it up a bit more.

I'll consider going with more distinctly separated prompts, though so far there haven't been any where I've felt it has needed the color coding to identify the more morally questionable choices or at least the ones with larger repercussions. If nothing else it could be worth trying out.

Honestly for color coding I might try using it more for speech with having it be blue for Maelstrom, green for allies or neutral characters, and red for enemies/hostiles. Hopefully that'll make it a little bit easier on the eyes.

I’m so confused
>cowering and stuffing money into a briefcase
>a safe half full of money and drugs.
and only 22 bucks? I mean it seems pretty weak all things considered but I guess its for difficulty scaling? seems hilarious that if your roll was a 2 that means we only would had gotten 5 bucks from a whorehouse. maybe jack just sucks with money, can’t pull out the old sack with the dollar sign on it, only inordinate exsanguination of his victims
>>
>>2609820
22 bucks is like five hundred or so dollars in old money anon.

That’s a pretty good haul for a small opium den. An anon above did the math.

It’s all in small bags of coin too, most people don’t pay in notes yet. Especially not in a place like this.
>>
>>2609829
You’re carrying twenty two dollars in individual pennies anon. It seems like a lot more money now doesn’t it.
>>
>>2609829
but it was also an active whorehouse. usually they charge heavily for that no? I’m trying too hard to think this out I guess. its not like you were gonna give us the $22, we just got lucky with a 19 roll, the +$3 being the only guarantee assuming we didnt roll a one and somehow lost all the money like a tard. at least rent is paid. also that shitty switchblade cost like $50 in today’s cash what a rip, a cleaver would had been better I think.
>>
>>2609931
The safe size was never mentioned and it could be just a desk size. On the other hand maybe the gang did collecting the gains earlier? Anywho if we want big profit we need to go after a larger target. This may be enough for the week maybe we will try and still work as a butcher get good with our knife and maybe save some money for a new knife.
>>
>>2609979
We need to get ourselves some education. We can read and write + simple math. With some hard work we can make more money legally.

We need to fund that though.
>>
>>2609931
Lets be fair though. That's a fuckin sturdy blade
>>
>>2610089
If not for us at least to our brother. The good thing of doing this work is that we get to pay for what we need while still appeasing ours and Jacks needs.

We can always target someone rich or some other place were the gangs move. But i say we avoid trying to do business in our territory for now. Maybe take some part on the war between gangs happening in the south and central parts.
>>
>>2610106
Or JUST take advantage of the war

Remember the gangsters don't really kill each other due to their gentlemen's agreement.

OUR slaughter is extremely notable in that regard. With proper work we can make their cold war hot. And then we scavenge the large scraps.
>>
>>2610157
I'm not against that but we'd have to be careful how hard we push. Too far and we could turn a situation that is downright civil by modern standards and turn this place into an even bigger hellhole than canon Brockton bay is. We still have to live here normally and it would be a really hard situation to deal with if we end up making it far too dangerous for our family to live in this place because we triggered a full on multifront gang war. Not to even mention the insane amount of heat that would put on jack/barnaby from bot lh the gangs and the authorities.
>>
>>2610532
Target only one gang, hit interesting targets.

It'll be fun
>>
>>2610574
I'd much rather try and make our MO as unclear as possible. One night we slaughter a building full of gangers, the next we mug and/or mutilate a manor of rich people. Make it difficult to tell which killings are ours and which are just copycats.
>>
>>2610741
Alternatively, kill people in other ways, or - dare I say it - knifeless run. A challenge could be a good way to keep Jack from getting bored. If anything can be a weapon, then EVERYTHING will be a weapon.

"Then the killer left sir, headed south somewhere."

"Can you narrow it down?"

"Maybe if we weren't in Central, he could have went anywhere from here. Or he could have doubled back to throw us off."

Arcane can see the frustration on Colin's face, the anger and resentment bubbling beneath the surface as he tries to keep calm despite the circumstance. This is the last thing either of them needed, there'd need to be all manner of media efforts to keep this from escalating the war between the gangs. He just hoped it wasn't an intentional escalation on the budgies' part, this would be a pretty serious step up from the occasional street brawls that the two gangs had stuck to before.

In the end, all he could do was hope that the constables would catch something he could use. The person who did this was thorough, but they would have to slip up eventually.

You return home late in the night, luckily transforming back into Barnaby seems to refresh you somewhat. You're not too tired when you wake up the next day and awaken to the usual sounds of children yelling, dogs barking and carts rattling that permeates the streets early in the morning.
Jack is quiet, resting apparently.

Jack/Barnaby
Status: Grand, though a bit nervous.
Money: twenty three dollars, all bagged up in coins.

You stay up a bit before heading out. Normally you head out early to avoid Father, but there's no need for that now and you find yourself still in the house as the other members of your family awaken. A brief greeting passes between you and mom as she wakes up, but she's rather tired so your conversation with her is limited to a quick greeting before you have to go.

You pretend not to notice her worried look as you leave.

Unlike yesterday however, you're accompanied by Mike on your way to the butchery. The two of you walk down the cobbled streets and busy roads, chatting about this and that as you head on to work. Eventually the two of you stop and share a pie from your usual place, it's good to have some food in you before starting.

The conversation, previously rather casual if awkward, turns to the events of the night before last. Mike looks around as you take a bite, checking for eavesdroppers before asking you the question he's been sitting on.

"What actually happened to you before, with dad? That uh, it didn't look natural. Ma says it's just my mind playing tricks, but I saw you fight him. I saw you... change."

You decide to mentally head this off at the pass.
No Jack, I'm not killing him.
I wasn't going to suggest that, I promise.

I'm still gathering my wits about it, I'll tell you once I've figured it out.
Say you're Gifted but leave Jack out of the details.
Tell him about Jack, and how you can change.
Not now, not in public. Even if you are being careful.

>>2625518
I don´t intend to go full Jack. If we play it safe and only kill people associated to crime, we can get a good rep that will come in handy when seeking allies, either in the common Londoners or the Protectorate.
>>
You cut him off before he can continue, holding up a finger as you frantically try to swallow the mouthful of pastry and meat.
"Not here Mike, I'll tell you and ma later okay? It's not the sort of thing you're supposed to talk about in public. Just wait till I get back from the butcher's yeah?"

"Yeah, I got it. Probably shouldn't have brought it up out here, sorry."

"It's alright brother, just let's not say anything that might give us any trouble eh?"

The two of you part ways as you enter the shop and get dressed into your work gear. Dan the owner is in high spirits, and whistles to himself as you get to work cutting off meat for your customers. It's hard and tiring work, but pretty fun once you get into it and the day goes quickly.

Just because it goes quickly does not necessarily mean it goes well however.

It wasn't going well, especially at first. The last night seemed to have taken something out of you after all, your work was slower and clumsier than normal. Dan was terribly understanding about it, mumbling something about everyone having bad days while patting you on the shoulder with a colossal hand. It's still irritating though, and even Jack's starting to get pissed by about midday, although his anger is less disappointment and more frustration at his inability to help without compromising your identity.

Or at least that's what you thought at first. But something happens when you head into the back to quarter a pig.

There's a flash of anger as the knife is misplaced, ruining the cut and losing a good pound or so of the carcasses worth. Then your arms flick forwards and pull through the meat, carving it with unnatural precision and speed. You're still furious with yourself and it takes you two more pigs and half of a bull before Jack notices that he's the one wearing the uniform instead of you.

"Oh bugger."

He looks around for a second, slowly panning his head to make sure nobody saw your enraged butchery. The room is empty, and the two of you can hear Dan talking with another customer in the front.

"Ah well, might as well make the most of it."

He finishes carving the beef as quickly as possible, keeping an eye out for the boss. Luckily he's still talking the men outside, and you finish quickly. You switch back just a few seconds before the door opens with a bang as Dan comes through, looking somewhat harried.

"Hey boy, I'm gonna need-"
He stops when he notices what you've done, four whole animals skinned, cut and neatly sorted in less than ten minutes.
"About that much... Holy shit kid, good work."

The two of you quickly sort it onto two carts while he explains the situation.

"Just got a bulk order in from some fancy noble folks affair in the toff's quarter, their supplier fell through and they need this by four. They actually need a bit more beef, but I'll take care of that. I'll need you to go with the cart and run this up to them alright, they've already paid for the meat and effort so you'll be up there for the day. Come back to me when you're let go and I'll see to it you're paid extra."

The rest of your afternoon consists of a hurried coach ride and helping the employees to unpack and haul in the meat on the other end. From what you can tell it's some fancy ball or birthday event in the northeast side of town. You aid the various footmen, cooks and butlers to get everything in order before the festivities begin, and it's a good thing too as you and the other servants only barely have everything together in time.

You're currently sat in a back room with one of the butlers, having been provided a pork dripping sandwich and a small glass of cider as thanks by one of the chefs. His name's Jeffery, and the two of you have been working together for most of the evening so far. He's a few years older than you, maybe twenty.

He's an alright bloke, he just won't stop talking.

"So of course then I told Mary she couldn't, I didn't know she was gonna get so upset about it. I did the right thing didn't I?"

Shit, you weren't listening. You're going to have to really hedge your bets here.

"I think so, but then I dunno much about how it works here, I'm just a butchers assistant you know?"

"Yes, I suppose so. Still, I kind of feel bad for her. It's a hell of a thing to get fired over."

You just nod in response to that, and finish the last bite of your sandwich.

"Anyway, I was told to escort you out when you're done. The party'll go on for a while now, and it's probably best if we're gone before they get into the wine."

You can hear the party pick up in the background, and Jack laughs at a bawdy joke you just catch.

"Yeah, seems like we might be a bit late, I should head back to my boss too."

He nods as the two of you stand and head towards the servants entrance, chatting about this and that.

You head out of the front door, the two of you chatting as you go.

"Yeah, last time that the others came over they had to call the constabulary."

"Oh really? why's that?"

"Some of the guests got drunk and started fighting. Nothing serious, it's not like they killed a servant or anything."

That's a bit specific but hey most of the people round here speak in a kind of stilted way, so you don't point it out. That'd be rude. The two of you stop on the route out of the manor and you turn to shake his hand. He's looking back but quickly turns to you, a strange expression on his face.

"See you man."

"...I'll... be seeing you later then too Barnaby."

Did you catch a weird feeling from that guy?

Kind of? But I reckon that's just down to being a servant you know? You've got to be a little off in the head to work around rich folk all day.

Fair enough

You watch him head back onto the manor grounds, looking strangely resigned. There isn't any transportation waiting for you (or that you could afford) so you walk back to the butchery.

You're about halfway there when it hits you. Oh fuck.
You left your switchblade in the kitchen.

Head back, that knife might be recognised somehow. Also it cost you quite a bit of money.
Nah, leave it. It's a good half hour walk back and it's already seven in the afternoon.

You start walking back towards the manor quickly, you can't leave the knife with anyone who might hand it to the police. You're pretty sure they'll have some way of linking it with the crime scene. Jack of course, needs no justification to retrieve his knife and agrees immediately. It takes maybe twenty minutes to get back with your hurried pace, but you stop and slow down once you reach the manor grounds.

You quickly pop your head around the corner to have a look at the party, but it seems that they've taken the festivities off of the lawn and inside. You quickly knock on the servants entrance a few times, hoping that whoever answers will be one of the footmen you've worked with, maybe even Jefferey. Unfortunately there's no answer, you wait a good five minutes or so but there's still no answer. You even ring the bell a few times, but nothing works, so you're left outside in the setting sun.

It's still light out, but the sun is just beginning to dip over the horizon.

Shit, check if the door's locked? Maybe you should just head in and grab it. The kitchen is only a few rooms down from the entrance.
You don't like this, maybe you should head home.
Let me grab it, I'm good at sneaking about. Switches from Barnaby to Jack. Jack is better at stealth, intimidation and violence but is incapable of not acting in a terrifying way.

Jack/Barnaby
Status: Feeling a bit awkward really, there should be someone on the door.
Money: About a dollar, you aren't dumb enough to walk around with your rent money in your pockets.
Jack: Intrigued
Inventory: An old ratty coat, really nice steel toed work boots.
Switchblade lost, it should be in the kitchen.

A few seconds of discomfort pass and then Jack takes control, your form growing taller and broad shouldered as you pull the sackcloth mask out of your pocket. He tests the door first, gently pushing it open. There's no response from inside, and you slowly creep into the hallway of the east wing. Where the corridors were bustling before, now you could hear a pin drop. The Kitchen is a few doors down, and you slowly stalk your way towards the heavy double doors leading into the food preparation area.

You wouldn't call it sneaking, because that brings to mind crouched, quick movement and Jack is simply walking down the corridor. It is almost completely silent however, so that seems to help at least.

You can hear some noise from within the kitchen, but not as much as back when you were helping the occupants with the meat. You hear maybe two or three people inside, they're cooking, but you can't quite place what. It's a kind of acrid smell, almost greasy in the back of your throat.

Nice, I was just getting hungry.

You like that? It smells disgusting.

Yeah well, I don't criticise your taste in food do I? leave it be while I get us our knife back, I'll need to concentrate.

Wait, do they honestly think human meat raw or poorly cooked pairs well with beef and pork?

Do they have any idea on the sheer number of disgusting chemicals and other toxins humans injest on a regular basis? Not to mention how they were more than likely terrified before they were killed. That shit affects the flavor of the dish. Keep in mind they probably had to find either poor young people in order to keep the meat tender, or import that shit which means not only is the meat poor grade, but it's also not fresh.

So not only did they waste the meat by pairing it with subpar human flesh, they insult the culinary arts as well?

Someone's getting fucked up today I swear on me mum.

Jack waits until the footsteps are furthest away from the door, then slips in silently and closes the door behind him, only a small gust of air from the outside marking your entrance. You quickly look around before taking cover behind a small table. The room itself is very large, fit for maybe fifteen cooks regularly although there were closer to twenty inside before. There is blood everywhere as well, now that you look. It's been mopped off of the floor in most places, and has been cleaned off of the tables but there's quite a lot on the walls and even some on the ceiling.

A quick glimpse into the freezer confirms your suspicions, you spot one of the cooks from earlier hanging from a meat hook.

Of fucking course they're cannibals, why wouldn't they be?

What! You knew?

No, but I should've picked up on it. Now you're in danger because I didn't read the fucking signs.

I don't think you could have picked up on this Jack, I don't think anyone could outside of a Gifted.

Jack doesn't respond to that, instead he takes a closer look at the two chefs remaining. You recognise them as the two who were in charge of the Kitchen earlier.

Yeah, they'd need to keep a few who were fine with butchering people. I say those two have done this a few times by now, what's your plan Barn?

Your knife is currently buried in a carcass across the kitchen, being used by one of the two cannibal chefs to fillet what looks like an arm. The other cook is placing someone's thigh in a large pot of stock.

Kill the cooks, you need to get your stuff back and leave.
Kill the cooks, you need to save as many people as possible and you can't get to any survivors in the freezer without killing the cooks.
Leg it, this is bit too dangerous for your tastes.
Some other, more dangerous plan.

It suddenly occurs to you that Jeffery actually might have been subtly asking for help.

We need to stage it to look like a survivor broke out of the freezer. We want to separate our Ripper work from this fight.

If we can get a cleaver and bury it in #1's throat, we should be able to buy enough time to throw a knife so that the HANDLE hits #2 before stabbing #2 multiple times in the heart region.

It needs to look... clumsier than usual.

KILLING THE COOKS WILL PISS OFF THE NOBILITY INVOLVED.

Barnaby has a butcher's physique, is blonde and blue eyed so think BJ Blazkowitz from the new Wolfenstein but shorter, with a thinner face. Jack is taller and more muscled. but has even more feral looking features, and a cheeky grin more often than not.

>>2627015

>>
>>2627052

>>
>>2627046

They're cannibals, honestly this couldn't be a more justified killing unless they were cultists as well. Them pinning this on us aint a problem especially since we've got an alibi.

We were headed home before this shit went south and the only person we talked to was Jeffery. Even if he's (hopefully) still alive he'll corroborate our story on how we left the party long before Jack showed up and went to work.

Now if you want to hold back to we can make these fuckers suffer a bit longer I'm all for it, but I'd rather save as many people as I can before this get's worse. Also we should kill the nobility too while we're at it.

They deserve to die more than the damn cooks do.
>>
>>2627046
One thing i know is that nobody going to believe the survivors words. Unless there is someone of the law in the party.

The first one bends down to place an arm soaked in marinade into the oven so naturally you vault the table and shove the bastard's head into the thing, Jack letting out a cruel laugh as the cook's screams are muffled by the roast. He's burning in the oven and drowning in at the same time, you're actually quite proud of this kill in particular. It'll be hard to trace back to you. The other chef looks to you as you're standing atop his companion and blinks for a second, then he regains his wits.

He hurls your knife at you as he charges, no doubt hoping to push you off of his companion. Unfortunately for him Jack's reflexes are superior, and the Ripper catches the knife in midair before bringing it down into the cook's neck and twisting violently. The stupid bastard falls to the floor as his accomplice twitches and chokes in the oven.

Quick, clean and nasty, Just how i like it.

You keep the pressure up on the first one, but his struggling stops in a few seconds. You hold him down for a little while longer, it'd be hard for him to feign death while being cooked alive, but people can do incredible things in the name of survival.

You pull your knife out and clean it in one of the nearby sinks, drying it with a towel while you head over to the freezer. Opening it reveals a truly hideous scene. There are a good dozen or so dead cooks here, all hung up to bleed out on metal hooks. There's also a few of the footmen here, though none you recognise. None of the carcasses in here are alive though, so you close the door and head back out, taking a particularly nice cleaver with you on the way out.

You can hear the sounds of revelry to your left as you exit the room, the party clearly having moved to the ballroom. Then again, you're pretty close to the servant's quarters.

It's up to you where to go next.

The servant's quarters, get them out of here should any yet live.
The Ballroom, just take a quick look so you can plan.
Maybe the cloakroom, you could make off with a lot of valuables if you take a quick look.

The two of you come to the conclusion that getting the surviving servants out takes priority over starting your rampage, so you quietly leave the kitchen and head back towards their quarters. There are almost twenty rooms here, and you can hear very little from within. Occasionally there's muttered conversation or fearful whispers, but nothing else. You suppose that they were probably ordered in here by their masters.

A door is booted open, and the maids within yelp as the giant bursts through. They're sat on their beds, ordered to remain until the master or one of his guests comes by. They crowd up against the wall as the giant rakes his soulless eyes across them and barks a short command.

"I'm going to Kill your masters... Run."

They do so gladly, and so does the next room. And the next room. It takes the Ripper nearly ten minutes to "Convince" them all to leave, and in that time, the party grows louder and louder. There's even screaming now, faintly visible above the cackling and sounds of excess.

Jack tries to convince some of the sturdier looking lads to stay and fight with him, but they run instead. The others fare no better, fleeing in a mindless panic away from the house of horrors. You can't find Jeffery, and you soon begin to notice that there are more beds than servants in the rooms.

No doubt some of them are serving in the ballroom.
You exit into the main hallway, you're running out of time.

You exit into the hallway, head twisting and turning as you decide what to do next. It's getting later and later in the night, and the party's getting even louder. You can hear the screams clearly now, a chorus of voices all crying out for absolution, for someone, anyone to help them. There's only laughter in return.

You head down towards the main hall, keeping an eye out for anyone in the area. Soon enough, you find someone pressed up against the doorway into the ballroom. They're staring into the main room, a strange device held in one hand. It appears you've blindsided them somewhat, you sneak closer reaching out and pulling them by the shoulder. You cover their mouth with one hand, then take a look at them.

Either way, Kaiser or Officer Wallis would have stopped us, in Kaiser's case if only to maintain his credibility in the eyes of the law, this new guy might be up for a little cleansing of the 'noble bloodlines' that seem to be clogging up the city.

And I want these bastards dead and nailed to the goddamn walls as a fucking example.
>>
Alright I'm out, got work in the morning. Make sure you all give these inbred bastards the judgement they deserve alright?

And be sure to save Jeffery if you can. If it wasn't for his warning we wouldn't have known this shitshow was going down, and that took a lot of balls considering what they planned to do to him. Also even if it's illegal he's still kinda hot and I have no shame in saying that.

>Kaiser, one of the local Protectorate.

Either we find out he is in on it in which case it's time to try to beat someone who presumably outclasses us both in raw power and experience, or alternately we find out that in this timeline Kaiser is honestly a good guy if a presumably flawed one in some regards.
>>
Someone you don't recognise takes it.
writing.

The Romans had it right. Cocaine, Opium, neither of those hold a candle to the two drugs that really afflict mankind.
Blood, and Sex.
When the rich and powerful tire of conventional pleasures it is to these two refuges that they will return, always. And so like the Caesars of old, these bankers and factory owners pit man against himself, or even wilder animals to spill his life upon the sand. It was just the veneer that changed, the spectators wear suits now and the dollar has replaced the denarius. Tigers and Lions were unavailable, so dogs are starved and maddened to replace them. What could possibly stop such barbarity? What could put an end to the cruelty of those who ruled?

Not even the Sage could answer that, but you know what must be done.

You are Mars, and you will be the bringer of peace through bloodshed.

You can see them now, the rich and fat laughing as a servant is torn to shreds and elsewhere, they jeer when a maid is forced to service her master's guests. You will be upon them soon, once the other arrives. You can feel them growing closer now, the anger and malicious intent radiating off of him and strengthening you. Every hateful thought or murderous action feeding the fire within you. Soon you will unleash it. You're surprised when his hand closes around your shoulder, but the Ripper will not kill you. Not here, when your enemies yet stand.
//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

I'm going to call it here for the moment, this was your regularly scheduled interlude, hope you enjoyed.
I shall be monitoring the thread for the next few hours, so if you have any questions now is the time to answer them.
I won't be able to run again until sunday, But it will be a proper all day and all nighter.
Also if you have anything else to say, now's the time.
>>
just to quantify, now is question time. I have college in a few hours, so I won't be able to answer then.

A little late to respond to this, but I legit haven't seen this meme used in years. Are you a time traveler or just an oldfag?
>>2627518
What classes you taking boy?

Gonna be a restaurant manager hopefully.
>>
>You are Mars, and you will be the bringer of peace through bloodshed.

I like this guy.

>You will be upon them soon, once the other arrives.

Was he refering to us or...someone else?

>You can feel them growing closer now, the anger and malicious intent radiating off of him and strengthening you.

So this guy shard is a karma focused shard? Like the one we were discussing about what Two-face power would be? I wonder what kind of Karma Jack has.
>>
>>2627732
Nah, he can sense and manipulate animosity.
>>
>>2627781
Oh yeah i forgot we are in a low powered settings.

Gloryhole's boyfriend? What a twist!
>>
>>2627897
ACtually now that I think about it, it’s probably still a master trigger.
Never mind the shaker rating.
>>
>>2627907
But he still has a brute rating?
...Oh boy
>>
If his connections to power remain it could make for an interesting defector from decadence angle to his motivations. I wonder if he is still involved with Glory Girl in some capacity, whatever her iteration in this timeline might be. Lets just hope Panacea's equivalent is more stable here due to presumably being less of an OP biokinetic, not being exposed to the awe aura constantly, and not having tattletale and S9 pushing her over the edge by making her cognizant of her hangups and then forcing her to face them in the most intentionally traumatizing way possible.
>>
>>2627721
I'm just an oldfag.
>>2627981
It'd be almost funny to have her remain almost the same in the amount of havoc she wreaks.

Wonder if we can find a healer to regrow our missing digits. If anything, the missing digits will be what exposes us.

I thought Higgs sewed our fingers back on?

Also
>Plague Doctor Panpan
Pls no
>>
>>2628002
Our fingers got sewed back anon. We have all of our fingers thanks to Mr.Higgs.
>>
>>2628024
He only sewed 'em shut,I think. Were still missing a good chunk of our pinky and the tip of our ring finger.
>>
>>2628094
>The surgery takes a while, your fingers are easy to sew back up but your shoulder is a bit more difficult for the man
Sounds like he sewed them on just fine

I'm kinda surprised Barn didn't had bigger damage in his hands. Butcher shops in the 18 century weren't know for having safety gear.
>>
>"So of course then I told Mary she couldn't, I didn't know she was gonna get so upset about it. I did the right thing didn't I?"

>"I think so, but then I dunno much about how it works here, I'm just a butchers assistant you know?"

>"Yes, I suppose so. Still, I kind of feel bad for her. It's a hell of a thing to get fired over."

>Still, I kind of feel bad for her. It's a hell of a thing to get fired over.

Mary wasn't fired was she...she became the food. Or she was the servant that died in the last party.

So back in thread 4 or whatever of the original run you convinced me to read Worm, I blew through it in two weeks and then spent one catching up on ward. Just wanna thank you guys for that, bloody amazing story and of top notch quality.

Secondly, this thread is great. Good setting, cool character and the crime scene investigation part was very novel.

I did the same thing. Worm's pretty easy to read because it's in modern English and it doesn't have stupidly complex sentence structure.

Readlets, absolutely pitiful.
