Finally after two years in the service of the Dark Queen Quintis you have finally been promoted, no more marching through filthy peasant villages administering the Queen's justice, this is your chance to rise through the ranks of her Majesty's armies and become one of her generals, or so you thought

When we last left off, our mid boss was dealing with the effects of days of interrogation on the captured hero.

You reach over and pull Selenas closer until she rests her head on your pauldron, You don't know how long you spend holding her with the sound of her tears plinking against your armor, but eventually her tears die down and you release her from your embrace.

"Despite what you may think of me Selenas, I am not a monster." She brings her bloodshot and puffy eyes even with yours as you continue "Who are these 'heroes' to you Selenas, don't tell me what they have told you they did, tell me what they have done, what you have seen with with your own eyes.

At this Selenas pauses, she looks at the floor deep in thought, before looking up a somewhat confused look on her face. "Well, nothing, I mean when I first met them at Rugalia they seemed nice, they were marching through a freed settlement taking on anyone who would join. Falenta took an interest in me there and that is when she introduced me to the others."

"Selenas, you haven't told me anything, what did they even tell you, you were fighting for?"

"Falenta said it was for our freedom, freedom from the heavy taxes and constant wars that drag their sons and fathers off to die in pointless wars" at these words Selenas starts to regain some confidence, she still truly believed Falenta was right.

"Selenas, I know you are smarter than this,"

"What," she responds, indignation growing in her voice.

"The taxes the peasants pay has far reaching effects, why do you think bandits had stopped attacking travelers, or why marsh warriors no longer raid towns in the south, these are the things that peasants money and lives pay for, the security and betterment of all the nation not just a one part of it.

"But Falenta said tha-"

"Don't tell me what Falenta said, you are not her Selenas, think for yourself!" you shout interrupting her.

Selenas's mouth opened then shut, it seems that you may have finally gotten her to think.

>Leave her to think, for now she needs to rest and eat, and you have work to do.

Keep pushing.

"The Queen does not rule harshly out of sadism. She is harsh because it is the best way to ensure safety and stability for the realm. It is not as pretty as the idealism of Falenta, but people who suffer and die for an ideal are just as dead. Falenta may claim that she has a better way, and she may even believe that she is right. But the world cares not for belief, only facts, and the facts are not on her side."

When I get back I want to see that food gone.
>>
After we come back from the village, would anyone be interested in testing the combat prowess of the goblins?
>>
>>2583837
This. A parting thought and then let her stew for a while
>>
>>2583864

I kind of have a thought on this. Gobbos are neither strong, brave or disciplined. Why are we using them as melee warriors?

We should start training goblins as skirmishers and recruiting and drilling humans as halberdiers or pikemen. Imagine rebel forces getting peppered by arrows or javelins by swarms of goblins, who dart into squares of black armoured pikemen whenever someone tries to run them down. They could also fight from spiderholes and whatnot inside the maze
>>
>>2583816
Did we leave her blanket and some clothes? Last thread we brought her them but then took them away..
>>
>>2584035
we are using them more as ambushers desu
>>
>>2584093
If we can get her to say even one original thing, not just "Fuckface said this, Fuckface told me that", THEN we give them to her.
>>
>>2584378
You want her to die of illness or freeze to death?
>>
>>2584378
It's going to be a long while before she comes around to that, she's still at the edge of the cliff mentally fighting herself over whether or not she'll jump off.
>>
>>2584378
That way it seems like we are buying her out, and that would be detrimental if we want to build up trust.
>>
>>2584035
We should really get some ambush spots in the maze tbt.

We are really good at digging into her head. Did we take Psychology courses before joining the Queen's Army or during?
>>
>>2584876
I like to think we've been around enough people of her type to know what happens, and thus are able to give her the tools to unfuck her shit.
>>
>>2584035
Because we don't have anyone else.

You crawl back out of Selenas's cage, and close the door before adressing her again, "Let me ask you this Selenas, who is the one dragging peasants to die pointlessly? The Queen, who has them fight for their country and the betterment of all its peoples, or Falenta who's true motives are a mystery to even you, one who is supposedly her friend. Think well on it." You walk away from Selenas and out of the kennels.

Now it was time to get to work.

You decide it is time to check in on the village of Resis, it has already been several days and the village has heard nothing as to the conclusion of the fight between the hero and your garrison and it was time you took the towns temperature. You hurriedly change into the clothes you keep for your leave time and head for the dungeon entrance, on your way out you tell the sentry that is you are not back by tonight to send a scout the next day to find your fate.

It is mid afternoon by the time you arrive in Resis, and at first glance the village appears to be unchanged the villagers go about their daily routines with out worry it seems. "But it looks can be deceiving,", you mutter under your breath as you procceed into the village.

You could do with a small break to do some shopping you think, as you skirt around the outside of market crowds and look for someone selling something other than a food.

There, after what you think is your 3rd time around the market you see someone interesting, A man sitting near a covered wagon on a crate. As you watch, a youth descends the plank that leads into the wagon, a small vial in his hand. The young man is blushing bright red as graying man on the crate chuckles loudly before accepting the lad's coin. The smile on the man's face slackens slightly as you approach and the youth runs off.

"And what can I do for you today sir"

"I am looking for something other than food and house goods, which you appear to have."

"I do indeed sir step into my wagon here and take a look." He gestures back to his covered wagon.

Following his invitation you walk into the wagon. The air in the wagon smells of sharp spices, and as you examine the crates and shelves in the wagon much of it strikes you as only slightly better than what was out in the market, spices, exotic fabrics, and other sundries; However scattered among all of the mundane items there are bits and pieces of more exotic items, vials of strange liquid, odd tools and small pieces of equipment, you quickly realize that if you want anything it would be better to just ask the old man.

You walk back out of the wagon and approach the old man. "Find what you where looking for?" He asks as you enter his view.

"No, it was kind of a mess in there and I figured it was just better ask you for what I want."

"A fair assessment, well then tell, me what you want,"

"I noticed that there were bits and pieces of tools and equipment in your wagon, what exactly do you have in there."

"Ahh, an amateur craftsman are we, well I've got tools for all kinds of professions: blacksmiths, woodworkers, stone carvers, and even some stuff for an alchemist, if you're interested in that kind of stuff. Judging by your appearance I'm assuming that you'll need a whole kit of tools, so I'll make a deal with you, the mundane kits of tools will be 10 gold a piece, but for the alchemist kit I'll need 20 gold, as its bits are a tad harder to get."

"I see," you respond before continuing, "I also happened to notice some vials of strange liquid in there, what are they,"

"Mostly perfumes," he answers "But I do have a few potions, I've got one that's supposed to help close wounds, but it will leave you exhausted, and one other which is supposed to perk up even a dying man, both will cost you 10 gold a piece."

"One last question, with the world getting as dangerous as it is I was wondering if you had any weapons,"

At this the old man reaches under the wagon and unlatches a leather bundle before arraying the weapons it contains in front of you, "The short swords are 5 gold and the daggers are 2 gold.

"I need a lower price sir, I'm giving you everything I have, at least leave me with something to buy food,"

The old man stares at you a little while before relenting "All right I'll give you a small discount, but that is it," he says sternly.

You nod and give the old man 60 gold in payment leaving you with 20 left. The old man gets up off of his crate and picking up a box shuffles into the wagon, soon after you hear the clatter of metal as he sifts through his junk.

While he sifted, you ask him. "Are you from around here?"

"No actually I am from a small village outside the capital but I no longer go there, no the open road is my home now."

"Oh were you not here for the attack on the village then"

"No, I was not," the old man shouted over the clangor in the wagon "I was in Wilden the next town over thankfully, and I missed the whole sordid mess." The old man waddled out of the wagon, the box brimming with all kinds of equipment.

"Here you go lad, everything should be in there, may the gods light shine upon you."

"And to you as well, um I didn't seem to catch your name sir, what was it."

"Himel, Himel Bentoss."

"Well may the gods light shine upon you as well Himel."

It seemed that the old man didn't know much, maybe you'd have better luck elsewhere

The box of equipment was extremely heavy in your arms as you stagger toward the bar, you wonder how Himel could have even carry it.

You walk down the town's main street until you see a building with a sign, its lettering faded and chipped but readable none the less, The Golden Grape, well the name sounded like a bar, you walk in through the front door into the dim light of the bar's interior.

The place was moderately busy with around half of it wooden tables occupied by townspeople and a few travelers.

The lass returns with your stew and ale, you pay her 5 silver and she goes off to tend to other patrons.

The stew and ale are the first real food you have had in weeks and they are exceptionally good.

While you are tucking in to the food, two men at a nearby table get a little loud in there heated discussion.

"It's been nearly three days and we haven't heard anything, I say we round up some people and go see what happend,"

"Just relax, I'm sure that that hero lady and the boys are fine, they are just taking their time going over that place with a fine toothed comb, we'll probably hear from them tomorrow."

"But what if they are not just fine, what if they are trapped in that place and need help, they could be going without food or water, dying in that horrible place, we have to go just to be safe!"

"Alright alright calm down, to tell you the truth I'm a little concerned myself, OK tell you what, tomorrow at first light I'll get together some other people and we'll set out and see what happend. But until then just relax and finish your ale."

It seems that an expedition of peasants will soon be visiting your home.

Coming from another nearby table you hear some more news.

"Did you hear, that hero rebellion is picking up steam,"

"I heard that they took over the whole Yamog province,"

"Yeah, word is that they have a huge army some say its bigger than the Queen's forces,"

"I'm betting they'll drive straight to the capital and give the Queen what for,"

"No the Queen'll see that coming and have something nasty waiting for em and they won't want to run into that, no I think they'll bide their time and take some more land, and gather more forces before they try to get the Queen,"

Their conversation then drifts to the Queen's competence and you have no wish to hear it.

With your meal finished you return your dishes to the barkeeper.

"Did you enjoy the meal stranger," he asks.

"I did, it was delicious."

"Thank you kindly, my daughter did work hard on it, is there anything else I can get you."

"No, but perhaps you can slake my curiosity, I heard that there was a recent expedition from your town, did you find some sort of ancient ruin?"

"No," responds the barkeeper, "Some damn foolish hero girl came into town and convinced bunch of the towns youth to attack the local tax collectors, the damn fools have been gone for three days and not a word has been heard from them, whole town is worried about em."

"That sounds awful," you empathize.

"Could be worse, I managed to convince our healer not to join that damned expedition, the town wouldn't last a day without him."

A town healer, he could be useful.

"A healer?" you say surprised.

"Yeah, well a guess he is more of a herbalist but he knows how to treat most wounds, you can find him on west side of town in a little hut if you ever need some herbs or some healing that is where he'll be."

If she ask for places we've been to then give her some partial truths. Enough that we can easily remember but not tell her the whole truth. Then jokingly ask has the taxes been so rough that the people had to attack the local tax collectors? From what I've heard and the lack of people, it sounds like things did not go according to plan.

I think it`s time to show them that we captured their family members and if they wish to see them alive they should not attack. It would be unwise to kill more peasants, our post here is only useful if the town can produce wealth

How about making our traps nonlethal just for their attack, capturing them and then making demands?

I think we should leave and go home, and try not to get followed while doing so. We got a big expensive box remember? "I wouldn't be so sure, the queen won't let those rebels just waltz through the country. "I suppose you're right, the queen won't just give up will she."

"Aye," responded before sliding down the bar to take care of another patron.

With that you take your leave, picking up your crate of equipment and walking out the door.

The sun sat low in the sky now its bottom just touching the horizon as you set out of the town and begin your trip home.

It was night by the time you arrive the stars wheeled in the sky above you providing just enough light for you to see by, as you approach the entrance to your base you hear a low growl you turn to see a goblin wolf behind you its muscles tense and ready to pounce. Then something sharp is pressed against your back as a voice says, "Don't move a muscle or I'll run you through."

You recognize the voice instantly and call out "Grintol it's me, the boss."

Grintol gives a yelp and jumps away from you then calls off the wolf, "Sorry, boss I didn't know it was you,"

"It indeed has been sir, the wolves know how to stay, hide, and attack on command."

"I see, so it has been going very well, good. Now Grintol, I need you to wake the rest of the garrison and bring them to the raid room, I'll explain everything once you've gathered there,"

"Right away sir," Grintol barks and he and the wolf set off.

You proceed to the raid room, It was time to plan an ambush, first things first , where should you set up.

We don't want the sounds of battle to reach Selenas or the other villagers. And we don't want any of the rescue party reaching them either.

Ambush on route to the base, as thats where they wont expect us (IE the whole point of an ambush)

But be prepared to fall back and put up a more determined defense of the base itself.
>>
>>2592803
That's why the ambush on route is a hit and run.

Remember, these guys are peasants. If we hit them before they even get here they might just decide to fuck off.
>>
>>2592806

Only issue with that is a group of them slipping past us and reaching the base. We can't count on the peasants being stupid because of RNG saying "Hah" to our plans.
>>
>>2592816
Then don't commit everything to the ambush.

I'm sure we have some ranged weapons about. Pepper them with arrows and whatnot, maybe sick a wolf or two on them if their numbers are small enough and then fall back.

We should be using these gobbos as light infantry.

Sleep would be the best thing right now, you think to yourself, a tired commander makes mistakes that often cost him his life.

You notify the goblin who will be on duty for the morning to rouse everyone before first light, and then you set off to sleep dragging your box of tools with you.

You awake to a knock at your door, still drowsy you rise and answer it, It was your goblin, the time had come. You send him off to wake the others while you get ready, you just finish putting on your armor when the three goblins and two wolves array themselves at your door, they were ready. Now there was but one more thing to take care of evidence of the peasants defeat.

The Hero's Sword should suffice, besides you don't really feel like dragging Selenas all the way out there, also if felt a little too barbaric for your taste.

With the matter handled you and the rest of your ambush party set out.

The stars still commanded the sky as you and the rest of your men walk toward the village the eastern sky brightening with every step.

>2 Successes

Along the route to the Resis you find a suitable ambush location a foot path surrounded by tall grasses that approaches a hill.

You quickly position you men in the grass and sit your self just behind the crest of the hill. Now you wait.

The sun is about halfway over up the horizon when the peasants make their appearance, there appears to be 5 of them, talking loudly and walking without much care, they walk right into it.

You crest the hill and as soon as the peasants catch sight of you in your armor they stop. "Who goes there," one of them says in a shaky voice. They are frightened and off balance how should you proceed.

You give a sharp whistle and one of the wolves lunges out of the grasses to stand behind the peasants, emitting a low growl, causing them to shuffle closer to you.

"The attack, yes, It was foiled," you say as you unsheathe the hero's sword. A look of horror and recognition flares across the peasants faces as they look at the sword.

"That was that hero's sword," one of them stammers.

"They're all dead then," said another his voice falling as he spoke.

"No," you respond "They are not all dead, a few have survived and are serving out their sentences."

Some relief shows on their faces but it quickly disappears.

"I am not a cruel warden, I understand that the hero convinced you all to rebel with lies of the queens unfair treatment, but you have risen up none the less and for that you must be punished."

As before you take after the peasants you do a quick turn and gesture to your goblins, who you can only assume are watching you, to follow quietly. A slight rustle of the grasses is the only response you receive, but it is a comforting one as the sound follows you as you proceed after the peasants.

When you arrive in the village most of its residents were just beginning to leave their houses, at the sight of your armored form many of them stop and stare, as the peasants lead you to the market a small crowd forms behind you, the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end, these peasants had you surrounded and the only thing preventing them from pinning you down and killing you was the illusion that you still had a garrison the peasants leading you halt in the market square and begin to call over anyone within earshot. Soon you are sure the whole town was gathered in the market to listen. The whispers of the crowd dies down as one of the peasants who lead you quiets them.

"People of Resis, this morning me and my friends set out to find out the fate of the hero and your sons and fathers," a murmur started to rise in the crowd, "On the road to the damned place, we encountered this man here, Sergeant Balder our new warden," There was a gasp from the assembled crowd before the man continued. "He told us what has happened to your loved ones, they are all dead."

The entire crowd flinches at the pronouncement, some women cry out and weep loudly as they find shoulders to rest on. The crowd starts to emit a cold feeling as eyes turn back to you. This situation would require a deft hand.

A little bit of the blaming of the hero part. As for the deceased, all families who had members in the attack, you may report to my keep and we will return your loved ones bodies to you so that you may inter them in the manner you see fit."

At your proclamation some of those weeping cease and the twinkle of hope enters their eyes, hoping that their loved ones were one of the few to survive. The rest of the people arrayed before you; however still exude an air of contempt for you.

"I can feel your anger good townspeople, and in fact I share it," a look of confusion plays upon the crowd as you continue, "I feel the heat of your righteous indignation at the people who caused this, these so called "heroes". these agitators, who incite anger and blind rage, then use you poor common folk as mere tools to advance their misguided goals. These heroes are nothing more than opportunistic outsiders, who care nothing for the lives of the people they sacrifice."

>3 Successes

In that silence you feel an energy, the cold regard that you felt, turns hot and shifts off of you. In each of the peasants arrayed in front of you, you see a hot burning coal, a seed of hatred that will never burn out for those heroes who killed their loved ones.

"I have said all that I wish to say, I leave you now to your grief good people," and with that the crowds start to disperse, The hairs on your neck fall flat once more and your heart settles in your chest. Resis is back under control, and will not brook any hero who wishes to rouse them once again.

We said our piece and put the town's rage against the heroes. That's good enough in my books. Now let's get the fuck on back home.

Sometimes not being a destructive jackass and keeping the peace can make you out to be a better person than the people who declare themselves heroes.

We should probably get to organizing the bodies of the dead for pick up. Our new "volunteers" (a.k.a. those guys we ambushed this morning) should do nicely. Also, lecture them on the finer points of announcing the news along the way back. We'll let them off the hook for now, but any butchering of our messages in the future will be met with actual butchering of the messengers.

As the crowd disperses you call out the peasants you ambushed, "Hold you five I have a task for you," they stop and turn to face you " You will accompany me back to assist with the retrieval of bodies," The men exchange a look before nodding and following you out of town.

On the way back you remind them, "In the future gentlemen, you will deliver my words exactly as I say them, the next time you leave words out of my messages I will make sure that your tongues leave your mouths, am I understood."

"Yes milord," they answer. Satisfied you continue the rest of the trip in peace.

Upon reaching the entrance to your base, your hidden goblins show themselves startling your peasant companions "They were following us the whole time," one whispered in disbelief.

With all of them assembled you start giving orders "You five are going to be blindfolded and lead to the bodies, you will retrieve them and then be lead back out. Grintol I want you to find out the names of the captured peasants and give them to these five on there way out. Everyone understand, good."

The peasants open their mouths to complain but a quick glance from you shuts their mouths.

With them taken care of It was time to return to your own work

Yeah we finally got the tools, but I want to go talk to the local healer and herbalist to talk shop about potions. Healing potions or ones that rejuvenate you're strength to be precise. And want to know if it would be possible to start a garden of some sort, or look out for what we need to buy.

And then she spikes the potions with something extra fun, subtle and slow working and everybody dies.

First thing first you had to check on Selenas. You descend into the kennels and find Selenas in her cage, she is looking much better, with the blanket wrapped around her she is no longer shivering and it looks like she has started eating again. The swelling of her face had gone down and her busted lip appeared to be healing well.

"You are looking better today Selenas," you say as you approach her cage. Her attention snaps to you and for the first time you don't see any of the usual disgust in her expression when she faces you.

"I feel better" she replies, "Thank you for the blanket."

"I can't have my prisoners die of the cold now can I, think how bad I would look," a small smile spreads across her face and you can see that her left front and left canine teeth were knocked out by your punch.

>>

>>
>>2597301
Dude that's a little dark. I mean in my head I think we would be losing progress with her and I figured she should know that by now.
>>
>>2597301
Perhaps we can say it another way.
"If you manage to escape or have been released, do not proclaim that you are a hero in Resis, they lost their loved ones and blame you and those you serve with a passion that rivals that of a berserker. You'll not live for long."
>>
>>2597343
That does sound better

Always sell them the idea that the're people just like us, with hopes and dreams, despair and sadness.

"I think you should know that the people of Resis have been brought back in line." Her face drops at your words and she starts to lower her head, "I did not kill anyone Selenas," she looks back up to you "I have given them a sentence of hard labor, and allowed them to collect their dead loved ones. Too much blood has been shed already and they need time to mourn."

Tears start to gather in Selenas's eyes as she says, "Thank you,"

"So Selenas, where did you grow up?" you say in an attempt to swing the conversation to a more positive note.

Selenas's face recoils in surprise at your question, as if you had just slapped her in the face, "You want to know where I grew up?" she asks confused.

"Yes, I want to know where you grew up, I am curious to know how a woman like you became a hero."

Selenas gives you a curious look before she begins "Well I was born in Lakana near the swamp lands to the south, I was raised by my mother after my father died in a swamp folk raid. She worked as a housekeeper for a local lord at his estate, he was a cruel man and every time I saw my mother she had a new bruise." Selenas stops for a minute before continuing, "I was luckier I was made to care after the lord's children even though they were my own age," A smile broadens on her face as she continues "They were nice to me, his daughter taught me all everything her tutors taught her, that is how I learned to read and write, and the nobleman's two sons taught me how to fight, I was better than the both of them and won every match they challenged me to, It was fun,"

"If you were in service to a noble who did you come to join a hero rebellion."

Selenas's face darkened as she began again. "I stopped being in his service, Once day the nobleman saw me sparring in the yard with his sons, I won the fight as usual and that didn't sit well with the lord. He came up behind me and knocked me over the head, I fell to the ground and he started to strangle me, I could smell the wine on his breath and see the rage in his eyes as he choked me, everything started to go black when suddenly my mother rushed over and tried to pull the lord off of me." Tears start to stream down Selenas's face as she speaks, "The lord a dagger from his belt and stabbed her over and over and over. That is when I picked up the practice sword and broke it over that nobles head. I cracked his skull open, he died right there next to my mother. His sons rushed to his side and I ran from the estate. I don't know for how long I ran, I just ran, I ran until I couldn't and I then just collapsed on the road. When I awoke the next day I wandered into Rugalia where I met Falenta and joined her cause." Selenas finishes as she wipes her tears away with the blanket.

...That was an unfortunate series of events. And this happened not too long ago. You have my condolences.
Let's talk of something less grim. Tell me about your foster brothers and sister. They seemed to care a greater deal about you than their father ever did for you. Would you ever want to confront them about what happened one day? To face your demons?

How much do we know about our queendoms laws? The charge of murder is quite obvious, but there is also the account abuse by the lords part. That and him apparently being a massive cunt. But word of mouth and what not.

"I'm sorry for your loss, sounds like you had a rough childhood,"

"It was, but I know that there are others with far worse ones than be, at least I survived mine, but what about you what was your childhood like,"

Her question catches you off guard and you recoil back a bit, before composing yourself and answering.

"I was the son of a peasant, my mother and father worked the land, bending their backs and blistering their hands, toiling in the fields to feed the Queen's growing kingdom. I was happy with my upbringing, we may not have been wealthy but I never remember going hungry. I was the oldest of 5 kids, 3 brothers and 2 sisters my father was so busy I was often the one who had to discipline my brothers and sisters. One day a conscription was called and I was pressed into the army with about 15 other kids from the village.

Where were you sent:

we`ve seen some shit
>>
>>2598637

>The Western Forests, to protect loggers from elf retaliation

Play up the bit that we were protecting common folk trying to earn a living through honest work from being slaughtered by the elves.

Play up that we were no hero, but a man doing his duty for his Queen and his countrymen, protecting the innocent.
>>
>>2598641

This is a trap choice....remember, her father died to swamp folk, which means his death could be placed on us not being there in time, or failing in our duty.
>>
>>2598648

nah man, I think it`s the most reatable to her, we could even play up saying we wish we could`ve done a better job, and her father died some time ago, not really on us
>>
>>2598658

Still...I think the protection of the loggers is the best choice if we want to play the sympathetic route.

yeah, but that is protection against retaliation, not agains some offensive war. the elves are killing loggers because the queen went there in the first place
>>
>>2598710
>>2598668
We could just simply explain it as a job that needed doing and someone's gotta do it.

Protection against retaliation represents everything wrong with the "good guys" and everything right about the "dark empire"

In any other fantasy, it would be portrayed as the noble elves defending the forest from the baddies who are using it to fuel their war machine. In reality we are defending innocent loggers who just want to feed their families, from arrogant, homicidal barbarians who value the life of a tree over 100 humans.

"We were sent to the forests on the western boarder, loggers and farmers were being attacked by elves and we were sent in to prevent that. Initially I was sent to with quartermaster to ensure that supply lines were set and safe, It was from him that I got a basic education, I served with him for about a month before our losses got so bad I had to be moved to the front. It was hell, the first logging camp we came to was full of corpses filled with arrows but those poor saps got off easy, the real unfortunate ones got sprouters planted in them."

"What is a sprouter?"

"Its a magically enhanced tree seed that the elves like to use to grow forests more quickly. They take a live prisoner and stake them to the ground, a hole is gouged in the prisoners gut and the seed planted in their intestiines, then an elf druid says the magic words and the seed grows fast, roots dig through the victim's body and feed off the still living person, the tree grows into its adult size in a matter of seconds trapping the poor bastard in its roots. The victims who can still talk after the process say it is extremely painful as the tree feeds off of them until they die from the shock and pain which is a mercy, because if the victim survives the initial feeding the tree sustains their life and they will live in eternal agony until the tree dies, is cut down, or they have their head cut off. I had to do the latter more times than I can stomach."

You notice Selenas turning pale and change the subject away from the sprouters.

"But the worst thing was how you couldn't sleep, almost every night the elves would attack us, they would slip around the camp at night slitting throats or just fire arrows into the tents from the safety of the trees. We lost so many people to those night raids. One man got so sick of the forest he started a blazing forest fire to burn the whole place down, the idiot the loggers need the trees not to be chard to a crisp, we ran after the idiot to stop him but the elves reached him first, they made his death slow and painful, for the next week every night we could hear his screams."

"Our best guess for the life expectancy in the forest was three days, of course I managed to survive a whole month, become the longest living member of my unit and get a promotion to Sergeant, even with my assignment,"

"What was your assignment?"

"Cover, that is how I got this armor, the elves loved to ambush us with deadly arrow storms, my job was to give some squad something to stand behind until we could find some actual cover, then it was my job to run into the rain of arrows and lead the counterattack, flush the elves out of their positions and kill them. I did that job for a whole month before my squad got rotated out and we spent I spent the rest of the assignment in the less dangerous parts of the woods. Then they moved me out here."

Selenas’s face twist in thought before she asks “Why did the Queen not just treat with the elves, I’m sure that a peaceful solution-,”

“Selenas,” you cut her off “There is no treating with the elves when it comes to the forests, and before you ask, no there are no other sources of wood, the kingdom and its needs are expanding Selenas, that is why the Queen needs to fight these wars, and do these sometimes horrible things. Peasants wouldn’t have wood for their fires, smelters no wood to melt the iron ore and produce the things it takes for the kingdom to run.”

Honestly I don't really have that many questions outside of how big the nation is, and whether or not other races like the dwarves and elves have different subspecies. Oh and what would be the other nations/kingdoms/empires of this world. Because it would definitely clear up a few things about how heroes act in this world.
Other than that I've been enjoying how Baldur is turning out, especially how he comes off reasonable but willing to bloody his hands for the sake of the bigger picture.
>>
>>2599353

I will be able to give you a map of the nation and the world size tomorrow. The nation is pretty big but to give a comparative size think Roman Empire but include all of Europe.

There are no subspecies but there are different cultures and factions of the different races.

As for how and why the heroes act the way they do, all will be revealed in time.
