Last Time on Worm Quest: Bakuda blew up the PRT building and Boardwalk, Armsmaster second triggered and you managed to recapture Lung.

What is this: A Wormverse version of the Joker. With Tinker and Mover Powers. The universe is based on a Web serial about superheroes full of grimdark and sadness. The main character is essentially a person who is capable of experiencing fun and not immediately being punished by the universe, mostly due to incredible dice rolls. We had eight crit successes in the first thread alone.

How does it work?: D20's mostly, I keep a list of modifiers and stats on my computer. You have three actions a day and can do things.

Description of main character so those who are new don't immediately assume we're going full edge: He may be a bit evil and demented, he may kill a few villains, and he may be a general immature ass but at his heart, behind the white skin and teeth, he is still Barnaby Campbell, a kid who loves his mom and little brother and wanted to be a hero. [quote from thread]

We have a Discord, it's for containing shitposting. and telling people when I'm running. https://discord.gg/gERNbV

The night is quiet after the events of the day, but you sleep fitfully regardless. The city isn't safe for anyone now, neither citizens or capes. Your exhaustion clearly shows in the morning, and Piper remarks several times that you look unwell. You don't have time to waste however, one of the gangs has just shattered the law enforcement in your city and you need to find them.
Or profit off the chaos, one of the two.

You should probably get back to Armsmaster as quickly as possible, but luckily your gang happens to include a rather powerful thinker in the form of Tattletale. So you delegate the task of discovering the unknown bomber to your gang members before heading out to use one of the many payphones scattered around your industrial district.

Tattletale gives you a smug smile and salute as you head out to make your call.

"Hey Armsy! Normally you wouldn't be my type but hey, it'd be rude not to call back after a night like that. What's up buddy?"

"Manic, I want to talk about the bomber who took out the PRT. I know you have a thinker." He pauses for a moment, then sighs before continuing. "I'm no longer the leader of the Protectorate for Brockton, so technically I don't have the authority to do this but the others would never agree. Especially not Dauntless. I want to work with you, just until we get this situation over and done with. I'll be patrolling the borders of the gangs' territory. When your thinker finds whoever did this I want in, send me a message on this number."

He pauses for a few seconds longer before continuing almost sheepishly.
"Oh right, if you want my help that is."

That's not quite what you expected, he's usually a bit more reluctant to get his hand dirty than that.
"Huh, okay yeah. It's your reputation man, just remember to bring a gas mask. I'll give you a call when I have something."

You hang up the phone after his grunt of acknowledgement and stand for a second or so, processing the situation. Most of you is somewhat uncomfortable working with the Protectorate, especially one you so recently chewed out on live television. There's still a tiny voice in the back of your head that's excited though, damn traitor.

You find your way back to the Hideout a while later. When you enter the main room you find Tattletale and half your gang sat around am array of whiteboards and laptops, furiously googling, watching news reports and occasionally shouting what you assume is relevant information to Tats, who is sat in the middle of the floor and tapping on her laptop furiously. It's actually kind of funny.

She looks up as you enter, face twisted in a manic grin.
"Hey boss, nothing yet, but we're getting close."

>>
>>2570396
Problem is most of the optio s we chose end up taking good part of our day. Such as creating our liguid smile-x or building the Gene bay.

Or like when we let the 3D printer make armor for our gang. That took the entire day, but fortunantly we could just leave the printer doing her stuff, while we went to do something else
>>
>>2570410
That would be fine. But i guess that is what involves part of the time management the quest employes. We could socialize and help our friends and gang members witht he research. But i would rather have a gadget to nulify missiles and bombs or something we can use to buff our boys and girls that won't leave then in coma for two days.

>>
>>2571066
Well I mean you gotta remember, Armsy was our favorite hero ever before, well, he sperged out at us. Personally I think while Barnaby would be eager to team up with him, he'd still be frustrated with him not being who he thought he was.

>>2571071
It's using a name while you aren't a QM. It annoys a lot of anons.
>>
>>2571074
But why? that doesn't seem to make any sense.
>>
>>2571066
Playing it as Armsmaster having been Barnaby's favorite hero.

Knowing kidnappings and shit is happening isn't the same as it happening to you. And that came along with the realization that the police and PRT aren't doing anything about it. They're basically just keeping the already safe areas safe, and primarily deployed against opposing capes.

By extension, Armsmaster was also letting this happen. And instead of just talking to Barnaby after triggering, he chased him down like a criminal.

A slew of things within a week made Barnaby really really mad at the PRT, but primarily his role model Armsmaster. Manic wasn't about making statements at the very offset, he was just trying to survive. The continual BS and exposure eventually lead to the way these things are going now.

Calm down.
Barn is even written off the bat as not a true villain. This can change.

Read the OP.

Plus we've established armsmaster as barnaby's former role model. Why would he say no to help vs what's likely the abb.

He didn't hate arms, he was severely disappointed in him and the prt.
>>
>>2571380
I think most of us would rather stick in the chaotic territory over going full villain/hero. Hell most of us even agreed to help because the end of the prt meant it would be just us and the abb and empire, who seem to be playing nice in order to deal with manic. The prt were needed to keep the field even, not out of any heroic tendencies.

You realize
1: we're only just getting back to above neutral. we went from +1 to -6 to +5 in the course of two days.

2: We aren't motivated to be at the top of the food chain for our own benefit. This can change depending on events. We perpetrated a slaughter that made S9 take notes.

We just happen to have a goal that lines up in the "anti-hero" archetype, a la Punisher. Some major villains NEED killing for the good of the city. We aren't demented enough yet to start killing civvies. The fear of that is what keeps PRT on their toes regarding Manic.
>>
>>2571434
He didn't say we aren't doing that, just that we should continue to keep the karma balanced

I don't understand anons autistic need to adhere to some arbritrary fucking moral balance. The interlude that would've indicated that JACK SLASH (not the entire S9) had taken interest in us happened before we murdered krieg, so probably wasn't about that, seeing as we hadn't done it yet.
>>2571066
Well, he is being nicer to us, he was our childhood idol and we have slightly bigger concerns than stealing his arm, so I'm not sure why you're surprised. Anyway, we bitch slapped Lung together. That means that either one of us is going to kill the other or we're gonna be BFFS 4 lyfe.

>>
>>2571578
But does he regenerate? because you can be lobotomized and then invulnerable to knifes while someone rolls your brain dead ass into a trash can before dumping it in a cement pool.
>>
>>2571581
Yea, it's been awhile since I've read worm. Him and the Siberian now that I think about it.
>>
>>2571582
Yeah. From what I remember it regenerates super quickly.
Basically just imagine a less indestructible SCP-682 that is covered with eyes.
>>
>>2571588
Hm well i suppose our blue goo is the only counter we have then.
>>
>>2571582
It has adaptive regeneration, a sufficient alpha strike to carve its head out might kill it, and that's a big might.

Aside from it the main threats are Bonesaw who is basically Biowarfare on steroids, and Siberian who was iirc is basically a living event horizon. Need to kill it's summoner to take it out, do that and it dies, but before that it's literally unstoppable.
>>
>>2571600
Nope. An alpha strike that destroys his brain would only slow him down for a bit. He has a core that needs to be destroyed that isn't in his head, which we have no way of knowing about IC. He will be a rough fight.

I'm really not sure how it would go with bonesaw. She might not even be that interested in a fight.
>>
>>2571600
Hmm. Which members of the S9 could we reasonably take out? Assuming a solo encounter with no preparation.

Personally, I think that Manic might be able to handle Manniquin or Jack slash. That is a very big 'might' for the latter though.
>>
>>2571538
> S9 levels of brutal.
The S9 slaughter entire towns and do unspeakable things to the remains, such as turn them into monsters or eat them.
What we did was gruesome, but I wouldn't quite say it was worthy of the Nine
>>
>>2571612
With Bonesaw we just need to be polite, give her some cookies and milk while we talk together about bio-tinkering.
>>
>>2571616
Did you forget the part where it took contessa to unfuck the mind fucking jack did to her?
>>
>>2571614
I think we could take Jack and Mannequin with a shocking amount of ease. Same with Regents sister.
>>
>>2571614
Shatterbird, Cherish, Mannequin, and Burnscar all seem manageable at least.

Jack Slash is iffy due to his power and his manipulation skills, and I don't think Bonesaw would fight us.

>>2571612
What this anon said. I believe that Crawler was bisected vertically once. He came back shortly after, or, if that wasn't canon, Weaver said he would in the comments.
>>
>>2571624
honestly I think that once the endbringer hits, we should up the dice to dc50 or dc100, because so far it has been a bit too easy
>>
>>2571626
from what I remember reader Crawler has a 'core' and if that's destroyed he'll die. Course, we don't know this IC, but we could figure it out seeing as we're a clever boi
>>
>>2571631
>too easy

I blame our stupid good luck. Even when we roll a 1 to get into a situation, we roll 18+ consistently.
>>
>>2571614
It really all depends on the condition of the fight.

Currently I can see us taking out Jack, Mannequin, Cherish, with little to no prep and that's if Jack can't broadcast us.

We might be able to beat Siberian if we do mass gassing and unintentionally target Manton, but knowing that we always go to SmileX might mean Bonesaw may come up with counters for it.

With prep I can see us taking out Shatterbird.

Not sure how we'd do against burnscar and crawler tho.
>>
>>2571634
We'll probably figure it out if we fought him long enough, the bright side of being a bio tinker is the longer we are in close proximity and examining someone we get lots of info on them.
>>
>>2571626
I don't think we'd really give Jack a chance to talk. Kind of hard to manipulate someone when the don't care what you have to say and won't let you say it.
>>
To put Crawler's powers in perspective I dug up this exert from Interlude 12 of Worm.

"Crawler was one of the two group members who had yet to rejoin the group. He was engaged with a young man with a glow that suffused his hair and emanated from his eyes and mouth. White flashes appeared with little accuracy and devastating effect, carving spherical chunks out of the brute. This only encouraged the monster, and Crawler eagerly paced closer, his wounds closing together with a startling rapidity. So few things could hurt Crawler these days that Jack rarely got to see the regeneration in full effect. Crawler’s healing powers appeared to play out in fast-forward when compared to even the regenerators who could heal wounds in seconds. Hundreds of pounds of flesh were replaced in one or two heartbeats."

If any of you are curious about what Slaughterhouse 9 is capable of, as a group, you can find a decent introduction to them here: https://parahumans.wordpress.com/2012/07/24/interlude-12/
>>
>>2571640
Actually that and a liberal application of tats would be really effective.
>>
>>2571641
I expect that the second he opens his mouth we'll just start laughing and never stop. Perhaps pause to point out that Jack's an idiot and then just keep on laughing as he falls into our waiting vat of acid.
>>
>>2571647
I think in Crawlers case it would be summed down to:

1) The core is his real body and the mass around him is just mass

or

2)Crawlers core is just a boost to his healing

In case of one not even our blue goo would stop him. In case of two our Blue Goo might effect him.
>>
Don't know why you guys are worrying about this, OP has us win against any circumstances on a good roll, and win against any circumstances with unintended brutality on a bad roll. We win either way, and no one is going to complain about brutality against the Nine. Their human rights have been revoked.
>>
>>2571673
Well I mean, we fail regularly on bad rolls. It's just the crits that we have to watch out for.
>>
>>2571673
Not really. We just keep getting 20s.

Only one I can think of is post victor snipe to neck, and we negated that with a trivial amount of mutation points.

>>2571677

I still don't understand why you are upset about winning.
>>
>>2571691
But the question is: can we control said tounge well?
>>
>>2571695
Could always practice. I bet piper would love to be the guinea pig for that
>>
>>2571694
its not that hes upset about winning, its merely that we win too much, to the point where it feels as though nothing really poses a challenge.
Which is boring. Its boring to read a story with a main character that always wins over and over, with seemingly no difficulty, and its boring to play that character. So far it doesnt really feel like there are stakes to any of our actions. Crit win or crit fail we still come out on top with ease. The problem isnt that we're winning, its that we're winning too easily. It doesn't feel earned.
>>
>>2571694
Probably cause its starting to get so easy it resembles one those established setting quests where we're with the main cast and OP as fuck and fucking so many bitches its like a virgins wet dream.

Honestly though i think shits fine so far.
Feel like it'll really ramp up later when we start fighting kill order capes like the S9 or The Teeth.
>>
>>2571701
Which i think is more a product of the sheer number of crits and less so the quest structure, considering for a failed roll one time we go shot through the throat and were forced into something we didnt at the time want.
>>
>>2571688
Pretty likely.

>>2571691
Eidolon never managed to, but we probably will.

>>2571694
Where's the sense of achievement, if we can trivially defeat every single hero in the city at once with a single 20? If that's just how powerful we are, fine, but I don't understand why people are talking about Siberian or Crawler as if they're legitimate threats, when we'll easily stomp them. At that point who do we need to worry about? Scion, I guess. Maybe the Endbringers. Eidolon, probably not, I could see us easily beating him.
>>
>>2571701
Why don't we wait and see how things will go against Bakuda and the endbringers first?

I mean we kinda got lucky eith our blue goo. If we didn't had that the fight would certanly be way more hard, doesn't matter how many 20's we rolled.
>>
>>2571706
That's a lie and you know it. A twenty would have had us chuck another SmileX bomb down his throat.
>>
>>2571701
To be fair, we've only had a handful of crit fails to effect us, and one of them shut down our chances of going straight wit the PRT more or less completely. At any rate, part of the reason we're doing so well is the sheer number of crits we roll. I reckon that with out our twin crits we could very well have lost an arm of our own against Lung, or maybe even have super-charged his regeneration, but not knocked him out.
>>2571707
I was unaware you had the power to peer into alternate Timelines. Tell me, how am I doing in the one where I married Jude Law?
>>
>>2571707
If you think like that, then maybe this quest just isn't for you?
>>
>>2571706
>>2571703
So the problem is the dice then? Why not just switch to d50 or d100?
Also
>get shot in the throat
>the main consequence isnt death, or lifetime maiming
>we just gotta kill someone when we didn't necessarily want to do that exact thing at that moment
thats not really a consequence anon.

And don't get me wrong, I really like the quest, I just think a difficulty up is necessary at this point.
>>
>>2571710
>>2571712

Some people are never happy.
>>
>>2571712
>implying that mutations aren't a consequence

uh

>>
>>2571712
I agree with you honestly, that was a very weird sequence. That said, this whole quest has been pretty railroaded, so it's more of a "strap yourself in and enjoy the ride" quest than anything else. if that's not ur bag i think >>2571710
is right
>>
>>2571712
Well i think the quest is fine and i don't see you backing down on your opinion. So i will just disagree with you then.
>>
>>2571709
Considering we've literally beaten Lung with that exact method before, it's a pretty reasonable assumption.

>>2571710
Yeah you're right. Shame how all the good Worm quests die out.
>>
If you swap for bigger dice all you'd be doing is ensuring extreme outcomes occur less often than mediocre outcomes.

Why not trade for smaller dice instead? With a d10 the chance of rolling 1's and 20's in the same action is increased dramatically. This would lead to more goodnews-badnews outcomes, which seems fitting considering the setting we're in.
>>
>>2571713
>>2571714
>>2571719
Listen, I'm just leveling what I think are legitimate criticisms that if implemented, would lead to a more suspenseful and exciting experience overall. I still enjoy the quest regardless, I just think that something should be done to the difficulty to keep the stakes up.
>>
Shits fine

how would people feel about dice vs dice though?

so now enemies can get crits and fails like us
>>
>>2571728
>>2571725
And then people will start to complaing for changing the system or say that things are to difficult now. There isn't a win with what you guys are trying to do. What could happen it that 20's against stronger openents alow us to last longer or cause some small amount of damage to it. Maybe taking a lucky shot as a speedester leg for example?
>>
>>2571728
I do agree with this anon, one of my problems in the quest so far has been providing the correct level of difficulty. But I’m going to up it pretty severely from here on out, I probably won’t get it perfect, but i have identified the problem.
>>
>>2571735
Oh god please no...it makes me feel like i'm figthing the QM rather then enjoying a quest...
>>
>>2571717
>Pretty railroaded
>plenty of choices in how we handle things

We didn't need to go on a bank heis, let alone deal with gangers the way we did.

There've been plenty of major decisions that could've drastically changed the tone of the quest ( could've been PRT associated, worked with Coil, even worked with E88 )

>>2571712
We have an indirect healing factor due to our body changing into something not human. Damage to our body leads to further fracturing.

We also had a choice of things that would happen due to the severity of the damage. We chose the Genetic fragmentation over the permanent loss of ability or tech.

It wouldn't have been fair to die from two rolls out of our control/planning. The same way a random 20 without associated planning =/= instant takeout.

DCs are adjusted based on the plan, as seen during the PRT breakout. It just so happens this quest somehow steals all the other 20s of all the other quests.

Seriously, the number of 20s that drop is bonkers. It's even more amusing considering it happens only to Manic while others fail around him.
>>
>>2571743
Is it the fact your constant thread running has appeased the dice gods into gifting all the 20s?

Perhaps if you run today, we get more 20s from less deserving quests.
>>
>difficulty increased against Bakuda

Welp...time to lose some limbs. Also you guys thing we should give our cape crew who doesn't have much offensive powers a power boost with our tinkering? Maybe making some armor for then?
>>
>>2571761
Probably do better giving them some clown genetics. Though armor isnt a bad choice.
>>
>>2571721
Sure, if you ignore the fact that we had help from Taylor 'beat Lung on her first night with only bity bugs and a little help from the siders' Hebert and that Lung was less ramped than he was at the PRT HQ when we gassed him. PRT Lung might have resisted the SmileX, as he would've been tougher. Cause, you know, that's Lung's thing. He gets stronger the longer you fight him.
>>
>>2571768
Donät forget that in the PRT fight, Lung saw our "toss something in his gullet" tactic coming, so it probably wouldn't have worked if Regent wasn't there to make Lung's lips spasm.
>>
So guys...should we ask Armsy if Rebecca's father (Mr.Higgs/Pauseman) is still alive?

Because i think he might have died during the attack to the Rig.

Temporary? Armsy is going to be our best pal for life don't cha see?
>>
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that with our kit and a couple of 20s that we can solo an Endbringer.

Like no amount of 20s should let us roflstomp those shits since last I checked we didnt have any powers that can crack through their cores, and if we injure them enough they stop sandbagging and would TPK us.
>>
>>2571836
We most likely can't, people are just saying we can.
>>
>>2571836

>>
>>2571839
Thats what I'm saying, like people are bitching by the fact that were rolling 20s and succeeding, but we're still in the little leagues and our successes reflects on that.

But in the bigger picture?

Against S-classes and Endbringers, a 20 should mean barely make it out alive or only lose one limb, specially against EBs

>>2571842
Unless we have Stilling or Foil we aint killing any endbringers mate. We just do not posses enough fire power, esoteric effects, or hax to crack their cores.

In all honest, the best we can do in an EB attack is to work with worst girl in the medstation to heal people.
>>
>>2571844
At the moment sure.
>>
>>2571844
If EB comes we will try to evacuate people and try to heal the people that get injured. Heck when EB comes knocking even Kaiser goes and try fight him supporting the heroes.
>>
>>2571844
I’m pretty sure that Zion said we “could” kill a EB, just that it would be exceedingly hard to do so without the two you just mentioned.
>>
>>2571844
OP has said we can, even that we would with our typical rolls.
>>
too be honest our rolls against lung were lucky, but the outcome didn’t seem amazing, I mean the first one caused us to successfully drug him but left us open to a pointblank fireball that we had to roll again to dodge. the lobotomy, gang massacre, speech, and brain surgeon were the most significant nat20s. I think. while disarming armsmaster, and getting throatshot were the most significant nat1s. if we rise the d20 to d50 it could at least lessen crit chance, and d20 DC can easilty translated to d50 DC (2 = 5, even DCs only, 12=30,14=35,16=40, etc)

>create a substance that turns the Bullshitanium (that the Endbringer cores are made of) into a weaker substance like glass
>coat a Flechette projectile with it
>she sends it flying
>pierces through the Endbringer into the Bullshitanium layer
>our biotinkered biochemical substance kicks in
>Leviathan shatters into shards of glass
>"And now, a truly ocean-churning dish: Leviathan on the rocks. Bon appetit!"
Thoughts, guys?
>>
>>2572001
We'd need samples of each of the Endbringer's layers to properly figure that out among many other factors.

Plus hitting a relatively tiny core in a moving target is gonna be hard by itself
>>
>>2572008
Also the time we would take to research without the samples. It took us what? Two days of research to figure what our Blue Goo could do and to complete it.
>>
>>2572001
I doubt it, that sounds like nat20 endlevel chem tech. plus we don’t know much about end bringers at this point

Won't flechette be there? And from the looks of it Armsmaster won't also be using this as an excuse to kill non hero capes. So tats should be able to observe from a safe(ish) range. With our molecular bullshit added into all this too we actually have a decent chance against Leviathan at least.

>>
>>2572001
Also, if our powers are "make this better" and "make shit" why don't we combine the two powers to make an NZT-48 type pill to give people thinker powers
>>
>>2572125
i think you need shard to get powers. Said that we can always gene mod someone and give the person low level cape powers.
>>
>>2572155
Things like increasing strength, constitution, dexterity, agility, etc... can be done to upper/above human levels with our tech... probably.

Taking it to real cape levels ( above a 2-3 ) is probably out of our abilities. But we can probably make discount super soldiers... something that will make us a SUPER target for everyone if they figure out we have been doing that.

Taking it
>>
>>2572168
We kinda can see what we did using our madman's garment. We punched fucking Lung and made him lose balance. I believe we can easily reach captain american levels of super soldiers with our goons

If we manage to do that Cauldron will either see us as a huge threat or will tey to recruit us and try to steal our gene therapy notes.

What the fuck is reddit spacing? I see this thrown around all the time and it just makes no sense. People are using spaces and new lines as a way to separate unrelated parts of their posts to make them easier to read. What about that is related to reddit at all?
>>
>>2572518
Because on reddit, to space posts out like this example:
>one sentence
>another sentence
You have to press Enter twice. On here, pressing Enter twice gets you this:

>one sentence

>another sentence

So yeah, that's the explanation. It also looks really bad

when you have your sentences not in paragraphs like sensible formatting,

but spaced out like this, where it's more annoying to read and gets you more attention like a fucking attention whore - which people on reddit tend to be, due to inherent issues with the website as a whole. Although sometimes the issue here is that you can't always tell how your post's formatting or appearance will seem to others. You could have sentences in sensible paragraphs, but end up where each sentence is isolated like my reddit spacing example above, though this could be due to post margins and length that sentences are shown in posts before moving down to the next line.

In other words, it's all to do with post formatting.

>>
>>2572547
That's paragraph formatting 101 though. An extra space between paragraphs or ideas is simply an alternative to the more traditional method of using indents and doesn't seem to be indicative of someone being from Reddit. It does look awful when someone uses it when they've only written a sentence or two but I see that as them simply being shit writers and having no understanding of basic formatting rather than them coming from some other website. Of course I could be wrong and the only people that use that particular style are solely from Reddit, but I just prefer to be a bit more optimistic than that.

I didn't mind it, but i can understand why people are so put off by it. And Worm in general, I guess.

When the writer himself states that upping the ante is his only way of creating dramatic tension, the signal flairs of potential shititude can be seen from miles off. Hell, I honestly really even a modicum of love for Worm, but my suffering boner just can't ignore it.

Is it wrong that the fucking TRIGGER WARNING in the first chapter put me off reading it for years? I cringed so hard that I just couldn't live with myself if I tried.
>>
>>2573135
I don't even remember that but I'll believe it. S9000 just didn't work for me because they had all this BS that kept them going when it was just them and instead of the characters finding a way to defeat them or anything like that we get more of them. Then they all kinda start to job. They caused a bunch of random chaos but it felt like more like an excuse to just bump up the civ body count and then get them out of the way for the finale.

Jack never came off as a smart manipulator to me either so it was always frustrating how he'd get away with shit.

reminder reminder REMINDER

Our power relies on us changing things "for the better", like it or not.
Our power hates the Blue Goo™ because it simply regenerates the user's body to original state with a 2 day coma, and nothing else.
Our power likes us fucking with ourselves to heal us at the cost of Genetic Fragmentation.
Our power liked us healing Mr. Pauseman Higgs' daughter, because we were changing her from what she was, WHILE also healing her condition.
Our power likes us using cards to cut shit up, because we are fucking with molecular bonds and bonding properties, which is change from original.
Our power likes us gassing people, because we're putting smiles on their faces, changing their appearance (temporarily) and ability to stay alive or not, depending on "lethality" :^)

When we are regular tinkering or chem tinkering, or if you have any ideas at all about how to make something work, or something cool to make, keep this central thematic in mind.
>>
>>2573411
I think i will add thay description to the Bin.

I think someone mentioned this before but I think that we are all want to interact with characters in our gang more, but we don't want to sacrifice our regular actions because we don't want to die in this grim dark universe. If we could get a social action a day, I think everyone would enjoy it.

In the afternoon you decide to get some more tinkering done, You don't really have any ideas either so you just let yourself go. Your body once again begins to move on it's own, mixing all sorts of chemicals and reagents together. Several hours later you snap out of your self imposed trance and try to figure out exactly what it is you've created.

[A black serum]
A small vial of black liquid, you have no idea what it does and your power wants you to stab yourself with it. Given your power's propensity to mutation, you doubt that it's a good idea. Maybe you should test it on someone else?

It pulses with red flecks as you watch it, and you simultaneously feel good and bad about it.

Ask for a volunteer
Test on yourself, you can fix anything that goes wrong.
Leave it for later, think on it maybe.

You need a test subject, and people aren't acceptable for many reasons. In the end you find yourself down in the sewers beneath your chemical plant, trawling around and trying to catch some rats. The little bastards are surprisingly fast though, and you have much more trouble than you would have expected. They always seem to see you coming, and no matter how chill you try to be, they always run whenever they so much as hear you.

You suppose that rats are notorious for their survival instincts.

After a few more failed adventures in rat-catching you lean against a nearby wall and take a breather, several long moments passing as you rest against the wall.

You turn your head sideways just in time to see a large black rat poke it's head around the corner. Simultaneously, you hear a deep hiss bouncing off the walls around you. You could swear that you've heard noises like that before somewhere.

You disregard the rat and take a step towards the origin of the mysterious hiss, it's very hard to tell in the darkness of the sewers but eventually you find your way to the source.

Ah, that's what you remembered the noise from. Nature documentaries.

You're looking at a snake, a big snake. You dimly remember hearing about it in class once.

"The Black Rat snake is native to Massachusetts, but is considered heavily endangered."

On the one hand it's super illegal to do anything to this snake.

On the other hand it's nearly nine feet long, and you want to stab it with Tinker drugs.

Get the snek. Got a plan?

Mind set up, you leap forwards and set about attempting to capture the large constrictor. You grab it by the tail and attempt to pull it towards you, unfortunately it then swiftly coils around you and begins to squeeze. It can't actually kill you because of your incredibly elastic bones, but getting back to your lab without being somewhat humiliated proves impossible. Piper being perceptive as ever.

"Hey boss, you in a spot of trouble there?"

"Oh no, I have this snake exactly where I want him... Could you open the door to my lab please, I'm a bit tied up."

And so you find yourself in your laboratory with a nine foot snake securely held in a tank as Piper laughs at you.

Unfortunately due to being literally tied up you could not grab any other animals to experiment on.

You inject the snake while smiling happily to yourself, black serum vanishing into the serpent's flesh. You wait for a few seconds before things start to happen. Firstly it appears to manifest some kind of black, almost tarry substance over it's skin.

Then it begins to grow.

Barely a few seconds pass before the snake grows to the size of a man. It breaks through the restraints and knocks you against the wall, you can feel a bone or two snap in your chest, but you aren't hurt quite badly enough to stop you from freaking out. It tears through the wall with teeth like razorblades, then quickly squirms outside, growing all the while.

You should probably head after that.

After a second of recovery, Piper picks you up and you follow the snake outside. It's almost the size of a bus now, and shows no signs of slowing down.

It's very loud now, roaring and screaming at the top of it's lungs as it thrashes and destroys several smaller buildings.

what's your plan?

Barnaby/Manic
Status:Broken Ribs
[Need] 0/20
[Gene Fragmentation]45/60
Karma:5
Money: 4,800 Dollars [-300 Daily]
Current power Understanding: mutating body and Tinker powers. Immune to poison, heightened senses.
You have ten Alloy Cards the Trickster's boots and Garb equipped. You have a Revolver and gas grenades. alongside your old knife.

Happy Zappers:Gloves that Electrocute Enemies: non lethal.
Madman's garb: heavy torso armour, full face helmet. strength enhancement
Trickster's garb, partial face mask. Lightly reinforced. dark colours for stealth. Molecular resistance field, basically mini krieg.
[Trickster's Cane]
This is a metal cane with an outer shell made of the same metal as your cards but smooth instead of sharp(obviously) it doesn't cut through things in the same way. Instead it softens whatever it hits and deforms it.
The cane also contains a directional electromagnet that allows you to recall your cards after they've been thrown, or technically anything magnetic enough for the beam to affect.

You push forwards as your bones crush against each other, normally you'd just retreat and heal yourself but you need to stop this thing from getting any bigger than it already is. You hurl a gas grenade towards it's head, desperately trying to slow down its incredible growth.

It starts spasming and thrashing as it slowly begins to slow,

Unfortunately while its growth slows, its thrashing only increases in strength and vigour.

You pull your vision away from the wrecked factory building in time to see a large tail coming for your head.

You bend down backwards as the tail flies over your head, but the action of dodging certain death via bludgeoning bends your ribs and you feel a terrible pain as one of your lungs is punctured.

That's going to sting in the morning.

[Genetic Fragmentation] 60/60: no overflow.

The snake has actually stopped its growth now, and is also beginning to either calm down or fall unconscious, you can't quite tall. It stops at about the size of a Large van.

You unfortunately do not notice this, as you're too busy convulsing and screaming on the floor while your body mutates, the regeneration field replacing and repairing the damaged tissue of your body. Your chest in particular seems to be the epicentre of the changes.

Oh christ, you can feel your insides moving.

You can feel your body shifting as you lie there, Piper's frightened shouting failing to reach your ears. You're too busy focusing, forcing your power to behave and wrangling it into a proper shape. It's hard, almost impossible to do. But you do at least three impossible things a day, and you know that if you let this go it'll get bad, if you give your traitorous body an inch it will take a mile. You're still lying there as the others turn out into the street, gathered around your body as it ripples and shifts on the ground.

Lisa is holding them back and saying things to calm them, not quite the truth but enough to keep them from interfering or distracting you. The others are visibly disgusted and frightened as your body ripples with strange energies. The field is visible now, remaking your body in front of them and churning your flesh in hideous ways.

You hear a motorcycle, and several terrified gasps.

Perhaps if you had told your team then some of this could be avoided, if you hadn't run blindly into the fray as cocksure as always.

Perhaps then they would have have the foresight to keep the beast's black blood from mixing with yours and entering your body. You black out once the changes are over, laughter echoing throughout the district. And the minds of those within.

[Your body has changed]

[It's in my head!]
Your laughter is now literally infectious, echoing inside the minds of anyone who happens to hear it, duration and effects depend on the mental resilience (and traumas) of the listener.

[Core]
The organs and bones of your chest have fused into a single structure. Your organs are now mundane, but hideously tough and you have several redundancies built in.

[Cosmetic changes]
Your facial structure and skin are now noticeably inhuman, your face is thinner and longer than any human's. And your long sharp teeth (more like fangs) combine with that to give you an almost feral look. Your skin is still an impossibly pale white, but your lips are now a bright crimson red, and your eyes now almost glow red with white pupils.

Fangs first
Then mind laugh
Then facial structure
Then the red eyes
Then fixing our skin to be much more human while still being pale white
End up keeping the best part of the Joker without the horror of it. We are keeping the core and the pale skin and the hair and the red lips, no doubt.
Alternatively we can one day fully become normal again. Our description from thread 1 was:
>seemed rather thin where clothing didn't fully obscure
>wearing an old green jumper and navy trousers, along with a beanie hat and long purple scarf
>about six foot one
>blonde hair
>possibly green Joker eyes

>>2575308

Also I /really/ hope the new mutations mean lil bro doesn't catch on we're Barns deep inside the insanity.

And it'd also be ironic and hilarious if Defiant will just shrug this off later as just another "Manic thing."
>>
>>2575294
That what we normally do.
We tinker with our genetics and pick and choose the mutations we want.
This whole situation is what happens when the we don't do that in time and we mutate on our own.
>>
>>2575324
>And it'd also be ironic and hilarious if Defiant will just shrug this off later as just another "Manic thing."
Kek, I can totally see Armsy doing that.
>>
>>2575308
I just realized we could sort and categorize our laughter by changing into different outfits

>Signature Manic outfit(Trickster Garb)
The one everyone knows and love: the mad, gleeful cackling

>The "stealth disguise" that has literally never worked
A classy sensible chuckling

>if we make an intimidation outfit
A low sinister chuckle that ramps up
>>
>>2575462
>intimidation outfit
Wouldn't the Madman's Garb fit that? Being our heavy armoured set?
>>
>>2575479
The Garb has been seen as Manic's outfit for a while now and since people are now associating Manic with "Deadly to gangs, friendly to people," or more importantly "The Best Meme ever," there's a predictability in that if you say you're a normal person that Manic will leave you alone. Mostly.

My idea is making /another/ outfit that purposefully makes him look more deranged and unhinged once we go on the attack against the gangs.

The costume doesn't need to look edgy but rather colorful, eyecatching and certainty that it will put the spotlight on him, making those who look at him will be filled with the fucking certainty that this guy is. Gonna. Fuck. Your. Shit. Up senpai.

So that we can make a reputation that once Manic puts on his shiny new big boy pants, shit's fucked. For that other guy.

Sorry for the rant
>>

Wait is it just our in person laugh that causes trauma or can a recording of our laugh also work?
>>
>>2576161
It needs to be associated with a trauma. The bigger the trauma the longer our laugh will last. So i guess hearing a recording is disturbing but it will pass soon. Unless the person hearing the recording is someone we really hammered.
>>
>>2576161
It doesn't necessarily cause trauma, but if someone was paranoid for instance then it might flare up now and then, always seeming to come from around a corner, or as someone shifty looking walks away.

It's like a plug and play game that the other person's fucked up brain plugs in.

Theoretically it would have no effect on a healthy person.

The last defense is filling the base with our Gas yes. Maybe we can use that as a way to cover our escape.

Anyway we will need a new place. So long Ace chemical plant!!

Why are you guys freaking out?
We agreed to work with armsy didn't we, to find and stop the guys who bombed the prt right

You're on patrol with Chris(Kid Win) and Colin(Armsmaster) when you get the call, Dauntless having decided to have you patrol in larger groups after the bombing of the Protectorate building. Apparently someone had called about a disturbance in the old industrial district, they said it was some kind of giant snake, but you find that kind of hard to believe.

Unfortunately the industrial district is Manic's territory, and the last time any other capes went up there was the massacre last week. Only Alabaster came back from that, and you had the dubious honour of being the first Ward to see the bodies. You hate that gas of his, how it twists faces into mockeries of joy.

Wow, that was a hell of a thought, you get pretty deep when you're mad.

You quickly hop on the back of Colin's bike and ride off, down the cracked streets of the city and through what traffic there is this late. It takes you maybe ten minutes or so to get there, and when you arrive you're shocked into silence for a few seconds.

So firstly there was a giant snake, it's convulsing weakly and lying on the ground in a pool of black blood and green smoke. Secondly there's the gang, you can see Manic's henchmen spread out around the old chemical plant with guns and gas masks, they're staying as far away as possible, bar his cape members. You can see the Undersiders as well, they're stood around his body, obscuring his face from view and talking in panicked tones among themselves.

You can also see Manic from here, he's lying on the floor with his chest bashed open, shivering and glowing with some sort of weird energy field as his body heals and rearranges himself. It's horrible, you can see his lungs and other chest organs rearranging into a thick black orb before sinking into his chest.

Then he starts falls unconscious with a weak giggle which almost seems to echo for a second.

Armsmaster gets off his bike and readies his halberd, edging towards the villain group while announcing his presence.

"Stop, this is the Protectorate. Back away from the Tinker."

Ah shit, you need to interject here or it'll go bad.
Armsmaster knows what he's doing, and the Undersiders work with Manic so there shouldn't be much at risk here.

You know what the real question, that no one seems to want to ask is? If the snake mutated and the black blood was enough to make us mutate...what will happen if the black blood goes tot he sewers and some rat or any insect drinks it?

I think Zion should roll to see if we get mutant sewer rats.

Taylor's bugs?

Cosidering how fucked the bay tends to get giant mutant rats would only be a tourist attraction. Well unless they get to Skaven levels of size, then they'd just be recruitable minions and/or furry bait.

You edge towards the Armsmaster as the villains fan out, drawing an automatic shotgun from your back and unfolding the stock. You're equipped with beanbag rounds (Armsmaster refuses to allow your Napalm rounds despite helping to make them) and you're willing to bet that they might be useful if this turns sour. Armsmaster and Tattletale are speaking now, both sounding scared and conversing in a hushed tone. Kid is busy keeping his eye on the snake, and appears to be dosing it with a tranquilliser of some kind. Normally you'd be more interested in it but your tinkering is particularly focused on machinery.

That leaves you, and only you to actually check on the mad vigilante. You head forwards, into the plaza and past the unofficial picket line. You can see him now, and it's terrible. His flesh is melting and pulling apart, it looks like a wax figure running and melting away. He's mumbling under his breath, demented giggling mixed with crying and strangled calls for help.
Then there is his face, It is halfway through a transformation now, the right half of his face is strange, far too thin and cruel, sharp features and sharper teeth have an almost feral effect on the overall figure. Then there's the other half, a half that you find far more terrifying.

"Barn? Oh no... No no no no"

You don't quite recall when it was that you fell to your knees, or when you realised you were trying to scrub the makeup off of his face, but it won't come off. "Why won't it come off!?"

His lips are red now, mouth pulled into a hideous grin as his eyes (Why are they red?) Flutter for a second as he slips into unconsciousness.
"Hey... Long time... no see... Bro. "

I mean we've been pretty damn busy truth be told. If Armsmaster wasn't such a massive dick and made us run in panic we would have had time to sit down and think at the prt base and calm down enough to consider calling him. The fact that we were not only on the run from the law, but a tinker to boot, meant that wr had to focus on survival and building our powerbase pretty damn quickly if we wanted to avoid becoming someones Tinker!bitch.

After that we were too busy cracking heads, building our powerbase, and being fucked up mentally to do much else.
>>

Really. We're just going straight for the reveal on the first direct interaction between Manic and Giggleswitch?

Makes me wonder if Mike will be so full of rage that he will tell what happend to their parents or if Mike will lie if Barn ask about then.

Anyway get ready for one more bad day.
>>
>>2576547

The scene is flat. Had Barnaby and his brother encountered one another a few times prior, while in costume, this scene would be more poignant.
Giggleswitch resented Manic because, due to various factors, he reminded him of his father. Clashing those expectations with Manic's eccentric and unstable personality could have produced an interesting dynamic that would have added additional depth to this scene.
This is of course assuming that those scenes aren't swayed by metagamers determined to have the brothers resolve the baggage between them in the most sickeningly sanguine way possible.
>>
>>2576564
This
Zion shouldn't let us control anyone but maniac and the minions cause of shit like this.
>>
>>2576545
I don’t know, it seems really dramatic for him to see his face and manica face split apart like some sick amalgamate and us acknowledging him as well. this is going in the trauma vault
>>
>>2576564
Well i wasn't here to vote, so it's my fault for that. Also, anons hate drama with capes and comics, that's why most hero/anti-hero quest rarely have secret identities, or the secret doesn't last to long, because anons don't give a fuck and start going balls to the wall.
>>
>>2576725
I even came up with a convoluted idea for why Manic looks like Mike brother. But with us reconizing him during our bad trip, that plan was/has completely dissolved.
>>
>>2576564
I wouldn't call it flat but I would've liked a bit more buildup. Personally I was hoping we'd get the reveal during our after the Leviathan attack. It's a bit of a bummer that it happened because of a low roll. But the majority voted for it to happen so what can you do?
>>
I understand reading over it that I could have handled the scene better, what’s done is done though, so I can’t exactly take it back. I’ll definitely try to learn from this though.
>>
>>2577203
>But the majority voted for it to happen so what can you do?

Complaing like a little bitch.

>>2577233
I hope we are getting arrested also it seems nobody figured out were our hideout is. You would thing our crew would try to cover our face or something.
>>
>>2577233

Personally I liked it. Not everything needs a big dramatic reveal or some shit, sometimes things just happen.

Our brother didn't need to come, but he did, and him investigating the gyrating mass of screaming, crying, and laughing flesh gestating in the middle of the goddamn road is a pretty natural reaction to the situation at hand.

Sometimes things just fall into place, like two 20's back to back, or a cascade of 1's that create a gigantic snake monster with blood more dangerous than goddamn warpstone.
>>
>>2577233
Also you didn't anwser my question. Is the city sewers now infested with giant rats and giant roaches? If we had rolled a twenty, what could we have gotten beside a snake?
>>
>>2577397
Nah, the blood only mutated you because of your weird field. The actual serum totally could do that though.
Also for a bat 20 you could have found a baby alligator.
>>
>>2577297
>I hope we are getting arrested
We've agreed to work with armsmaster though, his exact words were "I want to work with you, just until we get this situation over and done with".
Shit, thats probably what they were whispering about.

>>2577387
I also agree the reveal didn't need to be huge and dramatic.
Feels cheap though cause we voted to do the spoilered option cause we all already knew who and where our brothers been and our parents were dead and we wanted to get a reunion out of it as quick as possible.
>>
>>2577426
I tire of overly dramatic secrets, if I wanted that I’d watch a soap opera
>>
>>2577421
Aaah...well can always make more of our black goo. Next time we inject in someone and see what happens!!
>>
>>2577432
exactly.
It would have been a thing we'd eventually find out and discover instead of an out of character pain in the ass we can't act on til we in character find out.

>>
Okay guys, here's the plan.
>work on Genetic Unfucking until we are sure we can completely reverse all fucked genetics we have
>as the story and quest goes on, progressively become further and further mutated, raising Genetic Fragmentation maximum higher and higher
>right before the climax of the quest, we reverse everything to become the blonde-haired pretty boy we used to be at the start of all this
>beat the final boss in our default non-mutated state
>the ultimate bookend joke
>>
>>2578300
I would rather stayed our mutated self.
>>
>>2578300
That makes no sense.
It would be cooler to get killed or have the shard removed, like you know who in canon.
>>
>>2578318
So what? Remove all mutations we don't like, keep the useful ones like the core, and cool cosmetic ones like green hair and pale white skin?
I mean, I think so too, but there's always possibility of going back to full normal only to mutate again differently, which can add to our unpredictability.

>>2578322
Fuck. That. Ending.
>>
>>2578335
I liked it. Depending of how you interpret it is heartwarming or very sad so it appeals to people with our without suffering boners.

Anyways, this is the story of Barnaby losing himself to Manic, taking Khepri's role on the story would be fitting
>>
Test
>>
>>2578370
I'd rather we didn't become Taylor 2.0, thanks. While the ride has been fun so far, I don't want to go that route.
>>
>>2578370
Personally, I pine for either a deeply harrowing or inconsolably melancholic conclusion to Manic's story. Unfortunately however, that likely won't come to about, but even wrapping everything up in a 'happily ever after' would be preferable to simply mimicking Worm's ending.
>>
>>2578335
That is most likely just me but, i think removing the mutations we don't like is just another way to make sure that there won't be no consequences fir our actions. We know we mutate when we reach a dangerous level of damage, we knew that the thing was strong enough to pierce a wall made of inconel steel.

What we should have done is called our friends and not barged toward danger like a...maniac. The point being, in my opinion, we shouldn't be able to remove genes we don't like, because without consequences, we won't stop making bad decisions.

Alternatively, we could have just left it to run amok while we go search for a gecko or something. We could have orchestrated our own Kaiju battle in the streets of Brockton Bay.
Actually, we should consider doing that anyway. Having Godzilla vs Mega Python rampaging on the ABB's doorstep would be almost as funny as 'blacking' half of E88's goons.

You are right that would be extremely funny. So long we make sure to drop it in the gang territory and avoid causing civillian casualties.
