Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls in secret. But now, with their existence revealed, a great cloud of change looms over Dark Gate Academy.

“Hup! Two, three... Hup! Come on, you're lagging behind!”

Of course Tami would be the most excited about this little camping trip. She's the one who organised it, after all. Still, you can't help but feel a little excited yourself, even if you are trailing behind the rest of the pack. A camping trip with the class sounds like a lot of fun after a rather stressful week. The sun is shining after a long time of dealing with winter weather, and the snow that littered the ground is all cleared up. Unusual, almost as if the universe knew you'd be camping today.

Plus, today gives you time away from Act, as evidence by the fact you and Mayu are holding hands as you walk through the forest just outside of town on the way to the perfect camping site Tami picked out.

“You packed a little light,” you notice, as the bag strapped over Mayu's shoulders is considerably less bulky than your own.

“I suppose I was unaware of exactly what I should bring,” Mayu explains. “I felt I could weather most harsh conditions, so I only brought the bare essentials. You seem to have brought enough for the both of us.”

You chuckle. “Yeah, I guess I'm underprepared. I've got my Walkman, my short-wave radio, a few extra packs of batteries, my gameboy, some playing cards...”

Mayu puts a finger to her chin in thought. “Yes... how much camping equipment did you bring, though?”

You freeze. “Uhh... next to none, actually. A thermos, I guess?”

“Neither of you even brought a tent?” Chuichi laughs. “Wow, I thought I wasn't prepared. Well, my tent is pretty small, it might be a little cramped, but the three of us could probably fit in together. Cramped, intimate, bodies pressed together... hey Mio, you wanna join in?”

Mio laughs off the request from Chuichi, patting your green-haired friend on the back. “Oh, heavens, no! I actually brought a much bigger tent of my own!”

“You're not gonna charge people to share it, right?” Chuichi sighs.

Mio shakes her head. “Of course not, I wouldn't do that to my friends... anymore! Though if you are using the tent, please don't make a mark on it. I want it as pristine as possible so I can pass it off as new when I resell it.”

“For someone who makes a lot of money, you're real cheap,” Sae grumbles.

“Why do you think I make so much?” Mio smirks and winks before blowing a playful kiss.

“Yahoo!” Kiriko yells as she slides down a dirt road detour to catch up with the rest of the group. Roka trails slightly behind her as Kiriko leaps into the air. “Beat you, ape! That's one for me, and none for you this weekend.”

“Yeah, you're pretty fast,” Roka admits in a calm, sullen voice.

Kiriko pouts. “Huh? You're not going to get annoyed? Accuse me of cheating by teleporting? Vow to get me next time?”

“Nah, you won fair,” Roka points out.

Roka hasn't been himself lately. You can't blame him, the death of his cousin Seiya has been weighing heavily on his mind as of late. Kiriko has been doing her best to keep his spirits up and bring out his usual self, but her comforting him can only go so far. As the group moves ahead, you find yourself and Mayu drifing towards the back, where Roka is dragging his feet behind Kiriko.

>Hey... how are you holding up?

>So Roka, you ever go camping before?

Roka shrugs. "My dad once let me camp out in our front garden. Other than that... no."

"Huh, I figured you for the wilderness type," you point out.

"What about you?" Roka asks.

"Our dad used to take us camping all the time," you reply. "He thought it was good to instill us with good instincts and be able to handle tasks like that..."

"Didn't stick in my brain," Kiriko laughs. "I even forgot to bring a tent!"

"Same here," you mutter. "Huh... we might be idiots."

"Probably," Roka replies. "I'm looking forward to seeing what real camping is like."

"Roka? Looking forward to something?" Chuichi laughs.

Roka glares. "Yeah, I'm also looking forward to putting you into a headlock!"

Well, there's some of the old Roka. Maybe this camping trip will do him some good.

"Ta-daa!" Tami exclaims at the front of the pack. "Here it is, the perfect camping spot! I scouted it a few weeks ago, and I've been waiting so long for this day!"

"You really couldn't wait," Ninsei points out. "It's still winter. You would have continued this in a snowstorm, wouldn't you?"

"There's no such thing as bad camping weather!" Tami laughs.

"I heavily disagree."

"So Tami," you note. "We forgot to bring any tents. I imagine you came prepared?"

Tami tilts her head in confusion. "Tents? Why would I bring one of those? This is a camping trip! Tents are for the weak!"

Dammit... you're not that surprised. Tami's the type of survivalist who'd sleep on the floor at any opportunity. "Okay... then who did bring tents."

Well, after a quick tally, the entirety of Class 1 brought... 3 tents. Chuichi and Mio's contributions aside, Hanako brought a rather beaten up looking tent with her. Damaged from quite a few of her clumsy accidents.

"Not off to the best start..." Makoto smiles warmly despite the misfortune. "Oh well, we'll make do. Amaya and I are used to travelling on the road and sleeping in a forest."

"Usually in a comfy caravan," Amaya adds. "But... this can't be too bad... right?"

"Okay, if you insist on using tents like babies," Tami continues. "Then our first order of business is to set them up and collect firewood. Split up into groups depending on what task you want!"

"Mayu, come help with the firewood!" Tami exclaims.

You raise an eyebrow. "Why Mayu?"

"Her burly powerful arms can carry a lot!" Tami exclaims.

To most that would be considered an insult, but not Mayu. Mayu turns to you with a small smile. "Good luck with the tents, Kazuma. I will see you soon."

The two of you share a kiss in the camping spot... for a little longer than usual. With Act constantly being around school grounds, it's rare that you've had a chance to even kiss your girlfriend. As the two of you finally pull away, you're met with some smirking faces from the class.

"Ooooh!" Mio laughs. "Look at the love-birds!"

"Cut it out," you blush as you move to help Mio with her tent set-up.

"Love like a china plate," Kaiya mutters.

"Huh?"

"Beautiful but fragile."

Chuichi rolls his eyes. "That's one on the Kaiya saying creepy things counter."

"You and Mayu are a lot more... affectionate than I figured," Risa laughs.

You raise an eyebrow. "You think so?"

"Well, duh!" Sae replies. "You're a weirdo and she's an ice-queen."

"Thanks?"

"No problem."

"Come on guys," Chuichi steps in. "Don't pick on Kaz and Mayu! So... what's it like?"

"What's what like?"

"You know...?" Chuichi leads in. "That thing couples do..."

"Quit being a perv!" Risa snaps. "... So, how is it?"

You shrug. "Kissing is great. Her lips are so-"

"Not kissing, dummy!" Sae interrupts. "The other thing!"

"H-handholding?" Amaya gasps.

Katsuyori leans against a tree as he looks to Amaya. "I never asked, why is one of your classmates a nun?"

"A nun?!" Amaya almost faints at the suggestion. "I'd never wear a gown so risque!"

Nuns are risque now? "What are you guys talking about?"

"Come on," Risa notes. "You don't have to answer if you don't want to, but... your alone time, you know? Unless... you've never done anything like that?"

"Oh, is that so?" Atasuke smirks as he moves closer to the tent you're setting up. "Then you won't mind me asking a few questions."

Uh oh, you knew you shouldn't have tried to keep up an act. Atasuke is the Sherlock Holmes of lewd acts. "Uh... sure?"

"What's Mayu's most erogenous zone?"

"Uhhhhhhhh..."

"Can't answer?" Atasuke chuckle. "Oho! Perhaps you at least know her bra size?"

You sigh. "Okay... maybe we haven't done a lot. That's not weird, right?"

Risa smiles and pats you on the back. "Of course not, Kaz! Don't let the teasing get to you. We're just having fun. You and Mayu go at your own pace."

"Preferably no sharing a bed until marriage!" Amaya adds. "But, uhh... whatever else you choose to do is fine too..."

"Why am I getting all the focus?" you pout. "I'm not the only one in the class who's in a couple. There's Tami and Ninsei, Anri and Gado, Ukon and Tami... I think? They're confusing."

"And Kiriko and Roka!" Hanako points out.

"I was hoping to ignore that one..."

Mio turns her head towards Kiriko, who has been avoiding the teasing so far. "So... how is Roka?"

"Can we not do this one?" you sigh. "I don't want to hear about my sister's relationship."

>Put your headphones on and drown out the noise.

You don't want to hear this. Not a single piece of it.

"Well, Roka and I-" Kiriko begins, but you beat her to the punch, reaching for your music player and throwing on your headphones, drowning out everything as you focus on setting up Mio's tent. It's decently sized, especially compared to the other two. Definitely the most appealing option... you expect there to be a lot of fighting over this one.

As you turn your head, dusting your hands off after finishing up the tent, you turn your head to see Kiriko making some... suggestive gestures with her fingers and touching her chest. In a panic, you pry the headphones from you head. "Wait, what?! What's going on?!"

Kiriko smirks. "Nothing, I just knew doing that would annoy you."

"Oh..." you grumble. Damn, that scared you for a sec. Well, at least the tents are ready.

The rest arrive from the forest carrying bundles of firewood. Mayu has the biggest stack as expected, though Roka almost has her matched.

"You sure you don't want me to carry some of yours?" Gado asks Kuin, who is practically buried behind the stack of wood she's carrying.

"No!" Kuin protests. "Your glorious dictator can handle it! It's my duty to carry the burden of the people-WHOA!"

Kuin bumps into the unfortunate Hanako, as the two collapse into a pile of wood.

"Tents, ready!" Tami exclaims. "Firewood, ready! Now we can finally begin! Oh, this is so exciting! I'm shaking!"

"I noticed," Ninsei mutters. "I was starting to think you had a fever..."

"Let's all sing campfire songs!" Mai smiles, clearing her throat to begin. "Oh-"

"DON'T!" Akuro exclaims. "Don't you dare!"

"Okay, what else do we need..." Tami ponders. "Some snacks, some drinks..."

"Some sleeping bags," Mio points out.

Tami shrugs. "I wouldn't say we'd need-"

"Tami!" Ninsei grumbles.

Tami sighs. "Okay... if you need them. I prefer to sleep in the pelt of my most recent hunt. Oh, I can't wait for that..."

"Oh, you're gonna slay a jabberwock?" Alice asks.

"That or a tasty looking bear," Tami replies.

"You're really adamant about hunting?" Ninsei sighs.

"Why'd you think I brought my bow?" Tami smiles. "Now, there's shops near here. I'll look after the camp while people get supplies."

"I'll join you," Gado mutters as he tosses his firewood aside. He comes up behind you and Mayu and places a hand on your shoulder. "Anyone else on the drinks train?"

"I shall join as well," Mayu nods.

Akuro lets out a yawn. "Sure, I'll tag along. Better to stretch my feet."

The four of you make your way through the forest and onto the street and make your way to a small grocery store in the town. "So, how are you two crazy kids holding up?" Gado asks.

"Pretty well," you smile. "It's nice to get away from Act for a while. Anytime she's around I have to pretend I'm with Mio instead."

"Yeah, I noticed," Akuro notes. "She really likes playing that role, huh?"

"She's very committed to the performance, yes."

"Well, you're a much more bearable couple than some people around the class..." Akuro replies. "Like this guy over here."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Gado chuckles.

"You know what it means! I share a room with Anri! It's... haunting."

Gado smirks. "You're just saying that because you've got a crush on brainiac."

"Don't make me sick."

The four of you arrive at the grocery store and you begin to purchase packs of soft drinks... well, three of you do. Gado instead pulls out a fake id. "Whoa, you're buying booze?" Akuro asks.

"Yeah, problem?" Gado asks. "I've been drinking booze since I was... twelve?"

"I'm not surprised."

Gado chuckles. "No pressure, but it is a camping party... you want me to grab some cans for the rest of the class?"

"Whoa, cool your jets!" Gado holds out his hands. "Don't get too excited. You know alcohol doesn't make you automatically cool."

"I know that!" you reply, disappointed that it wouldn't.

"Mayu, you want in on this?" Gado asks.

"N-no..." Mayu mutters.

"Not a fan?"

"My... mother..."

Oh. You gently squeeze Mayu's hand and smile warmly. Of course she would be uncomfortable with alcohol, considering her mothers... issues. Act has been constantly inebriated since she arrived at the school.

"Oh..." Akuro mutters. "Well, no pressure. Let's lug this stuff back to the camp."

The four of you carry the cans all the way back to the campside. Some other groups approach with their supplies. Sae is already tearing into most of the snacks, while Alice is being dragged along inside one of the sleeping bags, snoozing away.

"Why did you allow that?" Gado asks Ninsei as he notes Alice.

"Where you going to tell her no?" Ninsei replies.

You arrive back in the campfire where Tami is already performing target practice on a tree. Taiyo quietly sits by a tree, inspecting a flower. "Why am I not surprised you're so focused on hunting?" you ask.

Tami turns her head to greet her class. "Hi guys!"

"No hunting," Ninsei mutters.

"Huh?"

"This is a camping trip," Ninsei replies. "Take your mind off hunting for one day. This is supposed to be fun, not more work."

As... interesting as hunting with Tami would be, you're much more interested in spending time at the camp with your friends.

"To each their own!" Tami smiles. "Get started on the fire!"

Kaiya beats Tami to the punch, igniting the pile of wood with her magic. Hanako jumps back in shock, almost knocking through her tent had Atasuke not caught her.

Mio rubs her hands together in excitement. "Okay, the fire is ready! Alice, where did you put the lawn chairs? ... Alice? Where'd you go?"

You all look up to find Alice snoozing in a nearby tree. "That girl..." you mutter. "How does she even do that?"

"I don't know," Akuro shrugs. "Anything's possible with demons."

"I feel like I should resent that statement," Taiyo states.

"Gah!" Chuichi jumps in shock as he turns to face Taiyo. "You're still here?"

Taiyo pauses. "Where else would I be?"

"Demonland?" Chuichi asks.

"That sounds like a theme park..." Kuin mutters. "Gado, new plan! I shall use my power to build... Demonland!"

"Uh huh..."

Risa chuckles. "Screw it, I'd go to Demonland. I'm sure the pits of hell ride would be a thrill."

"Eh, I'm more of a Devil's Teacups guy, myself," Katsuyori jokes.

The two share a laugh, before you hear a rustling in the woods.

"Danger approaches," Kaiya mutters. "The father..."

The father? What does that mean? You stay cautious just in case as a man steps out of the bushes. A youthful looking adult male, with a bow and arrow slung around his shoulder. You take a step back, but judging by the look on his face, he wasn't expecting to walk in on a group of students. He's definitely not an immediate threat.

"Whoa," the man mutters. "Didn't expect anyone out here. Don't mind me, kids. I was just passing... by..."

The man meets eyes with Tami, who seems frozen in shock. She drops her bow as she stares at the man, causing some concern. "Uhh..." you mutter. "Do you know him?"

"... Dad?" Tami gasps.

Oh boy.

Calling it for tonight. There'll be a bonus scene later, and I'll be continuing the rest of the thread tomorrow.

"Is that what I think it is?"

Saki is immediately crowded by her cousins as she and Ryoji return to the party. Seems the ladies in Saki's family can sniff out a piece of jewellery from across the room with their eyes closed. Yokota, Chigusa and Masami all rush to ask Saki a million questions about the new ring that just so happened to appear on her finger.

"Y-yeah... it is..." Saki mumbles. "D-don't tell my mother, I don't want her causing a scene."

"But we're about to cause a scene!" Yokota exclaims. "Ara-Ara! This is so exciting! We have so much to discuss!"

"We should take it to another room..." Masami points out. "Or else Aunt Sakamae will hear us."

As two of Saki's cousins chase her away, Ryoji finds Chigusa staying firmly planted. "You not joinin' them?" Ryoji asks.

"I will," Chigusa replies. "I was just going to ask you how you were feeling first. Wouldn't want to leave my cousin's fiance all by his lonesome, would I?"

"How I'm feeling?" Ryoji mutters. "I'm feeling... giddy. Actually giddy. It's kinda weird for me. In case you don't know, I kinda have the rep for being the cool and badass master delinquent-"

"-But when that heart gets fluttering, you realise you're still just a kid who was lucky enough to find the love of his life, right?" Chigusa smirks.

"... Something like that," Ryoji shrugs. "It was a long time coming. Saki and I... we hit it off from day one... in a really weird way. We supposedly hated each-other... but you couldn't tear us apart. It kills me to admit it, but my favourite part of every morning was walking into class just so I could tease that little goody-two-shoes head of class and watch the blush on her face."

"I envy that..." Chigusa yawns. "I know I may seem like a shameless flirt, but I'm actually a hopeless romantic."

"Didn't know there was a difference," you reply. "Where is your boyfriend, anyway?"

"Broke up about twenty minutes ago," Chigusa replies in a non-chalant manner. "He wasn't the one for me. In fact, I've fallen for someone else... Ryoji."

"Huh?"

Chigusa snorts. "Got you. You believed it for a second, didn't you?"

Ryoji smirks. "You're pretty good at that."

Chigusa nods. "But seriously, I've been seeing the leader of a street gang lately on the side. He's an uncultured idiot, but he's a lot more interesting that Okuyasu was."

"Mighty Mongeese?"

"Tremendous name, isn't it?" Chigusa chuckles. "Fufufu... oh well, I really should start the interrogation of Saki."

Chigusa makes a move, but Ryoji reaches out and stops her. "Not so fast. Something I noticed earlier when I was trying on this suit... you're pretty strong for your size."

"Yes?"

"On New Years... you could see a bunch of the lesser demons on the news footage, right?"

Chigusa smirks. "Ah... I see what you're getting at. Yes, when I was fifteen, I received an invitation from your academy. I knew what that entailed considering Aunt Sakamae was a former student."

"You didn't attend... why not?"

Chigusa tilts her head. "It may come as a surprise, but some teenagers don't have much interest in marching to their death. It's why I respect my young cousin... but until I saw it on the news, I never fully understood the extent of what Saki puts up with every day. Why do you think I invited her here? Why we feel so bad for how we treated her back then? Saki is a far braver and greater woman than I can ever be..."

Ryoji shrugs. "Don't be too hard on yourself. Of Saki's entire family... you three might actually be invited to the wedding."

Chigusa smiles before walking off to join her sisters and cousin. Ryoji lets out a deep breath and reaches for a pack of cigarettes... when a voice from behind startles him.

"Don't think I didn't see that ring."

Ryoji swings around to see his soon to be mother-in-law, Sakamae Kobashi. A stern, disgusted look on her face. "You proposed to my daughter, didn't you?"

Ryoji shrugs. "Yeah."

"And she said yes?"

"Why wouldn't she?"

Sakamae shakes her head, drinking whiskey from a glass. "I don't understand... why would my daughter do this? Why would she hate us?"

"You really don't understand? Even now?" Ryoji shakes his head. "Wow, you and your bastard of a husband really are hopeless, aren't you?"

"Don't you disrespect me-"

"Like you disrespected Saki?" Ryoji fires back. "Here's a little education for ya; you never had a daughter. In your eyes, all you had was a trophy doll that you could show off and make do whatever you wanted. But she's a person. A great person, no thanks to you. You made her life a living hell, and if you're still so deluded that you think you were helping her then... I don't even know what to say. I usually have a clever insult to throw... but that just makes me sick."

"Ryoji Shida..." Sakamae mutters. "You really are determined to tear about the Kobashi family, aren't you?"

"Always with the ego... I don't care about you. I'm determined to make the woman I love happy. That includes treating you jackasses like the monsters you are."

Sakamae pauses in shock. "M-monster? I... I never saw myself as a monster."

"They never do," Ryoji points out. "But trust me, Saki's shared enough stories of her messed-up childhood. We can sit down and I can tell you all the reasons you're a monster if you're willing to listen."

Sakamae takes another swig of her drink. Ryoji finds it odd... by now she would have lashed out at him, caused a scene, screamed in his face... but she's actually listening to his words now. Could she be more receptive to his ideas now? Or is she simply resigned to her defeat?

"I will pass..." Sakamae scoffs. "But... take care of Saki. It seems you know better than I."

"Trust me, I will."

With that, Sakamae and Ryoji part ways, as Ryoji makes his way towards the room with Saki and her cousins. The cousins warn Ryoji that they'll annoy him to no end if he interrupts their interrogation, and Ryoji takes that chance. He pays dearly... but he's happy with how it all turns out.

"Dad?"

The man who just wandered onto the campsite stares at the group of kids, particularly, the redhead standing before him.

"Tami... is that really you?" the man smiles nervously. "Huh... what a... what a small world. What are you doing with that knife, sweetie?"

Tami looks down, realising she still has a knife in her hands that she was using while setting up for camp. "O-oh... I was just cutting rope..." she explains, still stunned to near silence.

"Oh," the man clutches his chest with a chuckle. "You scared me there. I almost had a heart attack."

A long silence begins between the two, as you and the rest of the class are forced to watch in awkward silence. Eventually, the father holds out his hands. "What's wrong? Getting to old to give your old man a hug?"

"A little," Tami admits, before pointing towards his head. "You died your hair again."

"Yeah," her father states. "I think the blonde really suits me."

"Aren't you a little old to go dying your hair?" Chuichi points out.

Tami turns her head towards her classmate. "My dad meets a lot of women in his travels. Usually married. He doesn't want them to trace any redhead kids back to him."

"Oh..." Chuichi mutters. And suddenly it's awkward again.

"Yeah..." her father mutters. "Tami... I heard about your mother. I was... a wreck after I got the news. I tried to contact you, but you were nowhere to be found. How have you been-"

"It's okay," Tami replies. "I did just fine on my own."

"That's good to hear..." her father mutters, before looking to the rest of you. "And here you are... like fate brought us back together. Oh, I should introduce myself. I'm Taiji Kajitani, Tami's father. And these are your... classmates?"

"My friends, yes..." Tami nods, as she gestures to all of you. "This is my best friend Risa, my roommate Sae, Kazuma, Mayu, oh and Ninsei! He's kinda my boyfriend but we haven't really decided on that yet."

"I see..." Taiji scratches the back of his head before moving to introduce himself to the class one by one, shaking their hands.

As Tami looks to her father, you approach your friend.

>Hey, this is a nice surprise... right?

"Uh... sure!" Tami smiles after a brief pause. "Definitely a surprise!"

Ninsei lets out a sigh. "You sure you're okay with this?"

"Of course!" Tami replies. "Don't worry about me! I'm just surprised, that's all! My dad's really cool! You'll love him!"

"Hey there," Taiji mutters as he introduces himself to Kaiya. "And you are...?"

"The hunt will take you," Kaiya mutters.

"Uh... huh..." Taiji replies, before turning back to Tami. "Seems your friends are... mighty colourful."

"Yeah, they have green hair!" Alice laughs as she points to Kuin and Chuichi. "I never understood that! What a crazy world!"

The idea of Alice calling anything crazy being baffling aside, you're still concerned for Tami, who addresses her father in her usual forward and candid style. "Why are you here, dad?"

"Total coincidence," Taiji explains. "The happiest of little accidents. I was just here to hunt a wild bear and-"

"Hunting?" Tami's eyes light up. "You're going hunting, dad?"

"Yeah."

"That's awesome!" Tami exclaims. "I came here to hunt too!"

"... And to hang out with your friends..." Risa adds.

"Yeah, sure, that too," Tami waves her away. "But... do you want to hunt together?"

Taiji smiles warmly. "Of course, sweetie! Oh, it'll be so good to spend some time together! I always hated that I never got to teach you any wilderness skills, but I hear your mother taught you everything! Oh, my dear Momo... she truly was a wonder."

"Yeah..." Tami smiles, as the two both reflect on memories of Tami's mother and Taiji's deceased wife. "You want to get going? I don't want to spend all day hunting after dragging my friends out here."

Taiji nods. "Sure thing. Let's go, sweetie! I've been tracking a bear for the last thirty minutes!"

"I'm still going too," a grumpy looking Ninsei mutters.

Taiji laughs. "Wow, and I get to give the third degree to my daughter's first boyfriend. Uhh... this is your first, right?"

"Close enough."

"I'm not your first?" Ninsei mutters, but the two experienced hunters already set-out, forcing him to rush ahead to catch up with them.

"I don't like any of that..." you mutter.

"Me neither..." Risa sighs. "Still, Tami seemed somewhat pleased to see him... maybe it's more complicated than it seems. Tami would hardly hold the monopoly on complicated relationships with their parents."

"That's true," Makoto points out. "Amaya and I ran away from home... and our home was a travelling circus, which I recently found out is weird to most people."

"I went through a lot of foster parents over the years," Kuin adds. "But I like my current ones! A family fit for a leader!"

"Why, even my record isn't quite spotless!" Atasuke admits with a laugh. "My parents cut me off financially due to my constant parties and lavish spending. I saved up enough on my own, but it does mean I haven't seen my beloved race horse in a while... ahh Lily Strider..."

Just how rich is that guy?

"And not to mention how many damn orphans there are among us," Chuichi points out. "Is there anyone here who have both parents and are completely on good terms with them?"

Only four hands are raised. Ukon, Mai, Roka and Hanako.

"Although..." Hanako admits. "My parents travel for business most of the year. They still call and write, though!"

"So is your house in Kingudoro completely empty?" Kiriko asks. "Can we hold house parties there?"

"N-no!" Hanako waves her arms in fear. "My older brother takes care of the house."

"I didn't know you had an older brother!" Amaya replies.

"Oh..." Hanako mutters. "I'd rather not talk about that..."

Huh, you remember who going quiet before when her brother was brought up in conversation. Seems that whoever he is, he's a touchy subject for the nervous Hanako.

Well, with Tami away on some hunt, it's time to actually get situated in the camp. A lot to do, but which do you want to go for first?

"Hey, Chuichi!" you call out. "I rented some fishing rods from the place in town. You want to go fishing by the lake?"

"Sure, sounds fun!" Chuichi smiles.

Makoto's head perks up. "Oh, can I come too? Even if you don't have a spare rod, I'd be happy to sit with you both."

"Wait..." Chuichi mutters as he breaks off a branch from one of the trees, before summoning the string he uses in fights, tying to to the branch and bending a paperclip to make the shape of a hook attach to the end. "There we go... pretty makeshift, but I'm sure you can go without a reel for now."

"Huh... there's probably good business in that magic string..." Mio ponders to herself.

As the three of you turn to move, you find yourself being followed by two others. "Ukon, Mai... usually you ask if you can come with before you just start following... or at least say that you're coming with."

"I figured you'd be worried that we would be loud and scare away the fish!" Mai explains.

Chuichi nods. "Yeah, that is a very real fear that we had, and still have, and haven't stopped having just because you creepily sneaked up on us."

Mai and Ukon hit the three of you with puppy-dog eyes in the hopes of tagging along. You and Chuichi are the appropriate amount of cold and unfeeling towards their attempts, but Makoto is just the worst kind of softie.

"Aww..." Makoto sighs. "Well, we certainly can't abandon the two of you."

"They're our classmates, not lost kittens..." Chuichi points out. Despite this, Makoto gives the pair of idiots headpats, eliciting a small purr from the two.

Arriving at the lake on this remarkably sunny day for the winter season, you and Chuichi begin to set up your rods. "Hey, I just noticed something..." Chuichi points out. "Ryoji-senpai fishes a lot with his best friend, right?"

"Yeah...?"

"... You're trying to be like Ryoji-senpai, aren't you?" Chuichi smirks.

You scoff. "O-of course not? Why would I want to be like him? If anything, I want to be like Ken-senpai!"

"Suuuuuuure," Chuichi laughs, as the two of you cast off into the water, followed closely by Makoto.

"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie!" Mai sings to herself... terribly, but that goes without saying at this point. "That's a moraaaaaay!"

"Why are you singing that while we try to fish?" you ask.

"It's a fishing song, isn't it?" Mai asks. "I'm pretty sure it's about eels."

"So what's your game plan?" Ukon asks, examining your rod. "Team strategy? What's your plan of attack?"

You raise an eyebrow. "Fishing isn't really a team sport. There's no plan... you just sorta sit and wait... and then maybe catch a fish."

"Huh... that's not a very interesting sport."

"It's not supposed to be either of those two things," Chuichi points out.

As you sit down by the lakebed, you let out a relaxed yawn, before addressing one of your friends.

>So Makoto, you ever do anything like this? Your family travelled a lot.

>So Makoto, you ever do anything like this? Your family travelled a lot.

"Not so much," Makoto replies. "Most of our time on the road was spent setting up and dismantling the circus. Amaya and father would often fish using nets, though. She always insisted on doing as much as she can for the family and the community. Part of it was her good nature, and another part was trying to outdo what I was doing. She never let it go that she was the older twin, from the moment she found out."

"I noticed that!" Mai points out. "She usually calls you her little brother!"

"Yeah, I guess Amaya is a little protective of me..." Makoto laughs. "That said, I'm plenty protective of her! After we ran away, we're all the family we've got."

"That reminds me," Chuichi mutters. "Amaya is single, right?"

"Stop that," Makoto mumbles with a pout.

Chuichi laughs. "Heh, just kidding... hell, I'm surprised either of you weren't so puritan that you started a relationship... with Chihiro-senpai no less!"

"Did you really have to swear?" Makoto asks.

Chuichi raises an eyebrow. "Hell isn't a swear."

"I beg to differ."

"How did you land Chihiro Toriyama?" Chuichi chuckles. "You're like complete opposites."

Makoto shakes his head. "I'm not that unopen to new ideas... besides, my darling Chihiro-"

"Remind me to make fun of that 'darling' thing later..."

"Chihiro may come across as forward, but she's not some deviant!" Makoto explains. "Though she is still very... very forward. Oh hey, I caught something!"

"You're kidding right?" you ask.

"No, something's on my hook!" Makoto exclaims, pulling in the crummy rod to find a medium sized carp on the end of it. "Would you look at that?"

"Whoa, Makoto is the fishing champion!" Ukon exclaims.

"Again, not a sport."

"How the... heck?" Chuichi groans. "You're top of the class, you land a beautiful upperclassman... and now you catch a fish using the worst rod. You ever notice how your success is supernatural?"

Makoto shrugs. "Can't say that I have. Come on little buddy..." Makoto smiles as he releases the fish back into the lake, before giving it a cheerful salute as it swims off.

"He's like a Golden Age superhero..." you mutter.

"Tell me about it..." Chuichi replies. "Anyway, let's back to camp. I want some of those snacks."

As you and the others return to camp, you see Amaya singing to herself as a bird rests on her pointed finger, singing with her. The nature loving Taiyo watches with a mix of awe and confusion.

"See what I mean?" Chuichi exclaims. "The Shibata's are right out of a Disney movie!"

You grab a can of soda from campside and warm your hands briefly by the fire before deciding your next activity.

>Card Games with Roka and Katsuyori

You recall Katsuyori mentioning something off-hand earlier on the way to the camp about playing cards. You're more than happy to engage the bodygaurd, as it gives you a chance to learn more from the reluctant bodygaurd who has been welcomed into your class.

"Hey Katsuyori!" you call out. "You want to play some cards?"

Katsuyori throws up a thumbs up as the door of you move to a pair of lawn chairs and a folding table supplied by Mio. Katsuyori pulls out a deck of playing cards and lay them out on the table. "Classic poker sound good to you?"

"Oh... poker... of course..." you mutter, as you slowly and awkwardly hide away your Battle Beasts deck in your pocket. You look to the side and see Roka standing alone in the camp, as Kiriko has been pulled away to dance with Risa, Mio and Sae. Mayu is there too, but you can't call that dancing. You love her, but Mayu is not a dancer at heart.

You swallow your pride and call out to you rival. "Hey Roka, wanna join?"

"Huh?" Roka's head snaps back from looking at Kiriko dance. "Oh... sure, I guess."

He sits down with you and Katsuyori, as you look over to him. "You understand the rules of poker right? There's not a lot to read on the cards so-"

"-I'm not totally illiterate, jackass..." Roka grumbles. "Of course I know poker. My uncle taught me. We use to gamble with buttons he convinced me was real money."

"Wow, you fell for that?" Katsuyori laughs.

"I was really young!" Roka protests. "Like... nine or ten!"

"That's pretty old to be falling for that."

Roka continues to grumble. "Whatever... get your hands off those cards, merc."

"Don't trust me?" Katsuyori smirks.

"Not even slightly," you reply. "We know about your math thing, you'll know the placement of every card. Also, turn your head that way. You can probably still work it out just by looking at them being shuffled."

Katsuyori nods. "You've got me there. You two are pretty wily..."

Katsuyori looks away, as you and Roka take turns shuffling the deck. "Okay, you can look back now... hey... HEY!"

Katsuyori's head snaps back. "Oh, sorry. I was zoning out."

"Checking out one of the dancers by the looks of it," you reply. "Who caught your eye? Mio? Sae? Wait... is it Risa?"

"No!" Katsuyori rabidly protests. "Especially not that last one!"

"Why not?" Roka asks.

"Well for one she's completely plain," Katsuyori replies in a sentence reeking either of denial or downright terrible taste. "And secondly, what kind of bodyguard would I be? Don't be crazy? You have any idea what General Aoki would say if I even considered something like that?"

"What?"

"He wouldn't say anything. He'd have me gunned down with a snap of the finger."

Right... Katsuyori may be a jovial guy, but he's making the best of a bad situation. He's still under the heel of one of the most powerful and evil men around.

>It can't be that hard to keep a secret from him though, he lives so far away.

Katsuyori leans back in his chair and laughs out loud to himself. "Har! You really think that? You think there isn't a pair of eyes on me at all times? You think General freakin' Aoki will just trust a teenaged orphan mercenary to look after his daughter and call it a day? How naive are you? If I even so much as lay a hand on the princess... NOT THAT I EVER WOULD... I'd be taken out sooner than you can say 'what a dumbass'!"

Katsuyori leans forward in his chair and lets out a sigh. His mini-rant was phrased as humorous sarcasm, but that's something that weighs heavily on the mind. Being a pawn of something greater, having a pair of eyes on you at all times, waiting for you to make a mistake... that's terrifying. You just wish you could help the guy in some way, but the system over there is too big for you to even begin to handle. The least you can do is show him friendship and warmth, though, starting with this game of cards.

>Three plays later

"Read'em and weep... again!" Katsuyori smirks as he lays his cards out on the table.

"Dammit, you win again..." Roka mutters. "How do you keep doing this? I took away your chance to calculate everything! How are you still winning?"

"That's easy, I've been cheating," Katsuyori explains. "I always cheat at luck based games."

"Ah... that makes sense," Roka admits.

Risa approaches the table. "Wow, you managed to outsmart Kaz and Roka? It's like you're a member of the class!"

"Hey!" you protest at first, but shrug it off when you realise she has a point.

Risa turns her attention back to Katsuyori as he rises from his chair. "Hey Kats, you're the kinda guy who wears make-up, right?"

"Pft, what are you talking about?" Kats scoffs. "I wouldn't-"

"Okay, you ain't fooling anyone," Risa interrupts. "We want to test something out, and I nominated you as guinea pig."

"Hard pass."

"Too bad," Risa laughs. "Cause I'm gonna pin you down if I have too!"

"Hey, cut that out!" a blushing Katsuyori yells as Risa grabs him by the wrist and drags him towards where she and Kiriko have some make-up set up. "Don't you dare! My face is already perfect, dammit! Nooooooooooooo!"

"That was fun," you smile as you turn to Roka.

Roka nods. "It sure was..."

The two of you smile briefly, before looking to each-other. You both get a little flustered, huff and look away... baffling Akuro as she looks on.

"Did you two just... admit that you had fun together, remember you're supposed to hate each-other, then go back to glaring?"

"Pretty much."

"Just checking," Akuro notes. "It's always hard working out exactly which brand of insanity I'm facing every time."

"Aw, they're best friends really!" Alice smiles as she throws her arms around you both. "Isn't that right?"

"... No, definitely not," you reply in unison. You stand up from your chair and move to your next activity on the list.

>Video games with Kuin

You make your way over to Kuin who is accompanied by Gado as she turns on her portable games console. As soon as you approach, the little dictator points her finger towards you. "You there, Kazuma! Your glorious and benevolent dictator demands that you play with me!"

"I was actually planning on that anyway," you reply. "It's about time we had a rematch since our last bout."

"It currently stands at 6 wins for me, and 5 for you!"

You shake your head. "Nice try, we're at five each."

"Gado!" Kuin protests.

Gado shrugs. "You made me keep score. It's five each."

Kuin pouts. "Well, this will be the tie-breaker! What do you want to go with? Battle Beasts? F-Mega? Cooking Master?"

"Let's go with F-mega," you reply. "It's been a while since I've tried a racing game."

Kuin laughs maniacally to herself. "You fool! You fell right into my trap! I've been practising F-Mega for weeks, knowing you'd pick it!"

You raise an eyebrow. She's dedicated, she'll give you that much. But you'd be lying if you said you weren't a little swept up in the spirit of competition yourself. The two of you boot up your portable consoles as Kuin stares you down. "Are you prepared to be swept away by the power and skill of the glorious leader of class 1?"

"You underestimate my strength," you reply in an equally dramatic tone. "My powers have doubled since we last met."

"Ooh, that's good..." Kuin notes, as the two of you get started. "Get ready... GO!"

You and Kuin are intensely focused on the racing game as you stand by the campsite playing together. While Gado stares at his watch and the others go about their day, you and Kuin's minds are firmly placed in the insane fast-paced world of the racing game. The race is even right until the last corner of the final lap, where you unleash your cars rocket boosters which you've been saving up. It's still neck and neck... but your cart manages to cross the finishing line just in time.

"Noooo!" Kuin exclaims in crushing defeat, as you throw your hand up into the air. "How could you defeat me? I've... I've been practising!"

You smirks and confidently tap your finger on your temple. "Sometimes practice just isn't enough... in the face of natural skill."

"Impressive..." Kuin gasps. "So... now it's 6 to both of us."

"You're only on five wins."

"Oh no!" Kuin exclaims. "Okay... I'm sure you have a forfeit in mind. A noble sacrifice, befitting of a glorious leader like myself."

Ah yes, the forfeit. The last few games, you and Kuin have implemented forfeits to the loser of your videogame challenges. You've kept it very minor so far. Last time you lost, and Kuin made you pin a custom made "Dictatorship of the glorious and benevolent Kuin" emblem to your jacket for an entire school-day. Before that, you made her try some of Chuichi's spicy chilli meal. But now... you haven't thought of one. Well, better think fast, Kuin is waiting...

>Tomorrow you have to run all of Gado's errands for a change. He does too much for you.

Kuin's eyes widen in shock and horror, as if you've just revealed a secret hidden power or sentenced her to death. "You... you can't be serious!" Kuin gasps. "I could never!"

"Too bad, that's the forfeit," you reply. "You're the same as the rest of us. We're all gonna be adults soon, so the least you can do is your own chores for one day. Gado isn't your babysitter, you know. You should pay him back."

"Don't worry," Gado mutters. "I'll help you out with-"

"No!" You point a finger at Gado. "No helping out. Take the time to relax, read a book, watch a movie... whatever! Let Kuin handle the workload, you know she's capable."

"Capable... but at what cost?" Kuin stares at her hands in defeat. Wow, she really is lazy, isn't she? "This is the most crushing defeat of my entire regime. I swear, Kazuma! I will have my revenge and lead my loyal subject to a new, prosperous golden age! Mark my woooooooooords!"

Kuin's voice trails off as if either you or her were drifting away, but neither of you move. Must have just been for dramatic effect. Either way, you get up and make your way over to Mayu. You wrap your arms around her and kiss her cheek as you speak. "You want to go for a walk? This forest seems nice."

"I was thinking much the same," Mayu replies. "You were having quite a bit of fun, and I did not want to disturb that."

"Were you having fun, at least?"

Mayu nods. "I was... dancing. I am told it is supposed to be fun. Currently, I have come to the conclusion that if I continue to do it for long enough, it may at some point become fun."

Well that's... something. You take Mayu by the hand and together the two of you walk hand in hand through the forest as the sun begins to dim slightly. "This has been an excellent day thus far, Kazuma."

"Yeah," you agree. "Hopefully when the weather gets warmer we can do this more often. We'll be moving onto the next school year. After the current class 3 graduates, we'll be expected to be present and working during every incursion night."

Mayu gives a small smile. "Kazuma, there has been an interesting feeling brewing inside of me lately. It is quite odd... but I never truly realised how many friends we have. I know I have been called emotionally distant... and based on records and statistics I have researched that seems to be the case, yet I feel... close to our classmates."

You chuckle. "We kinda have become a bit of a tight knit group, haven't we? Before New Years, it seemed most of us were at each-others throats... but now we're able to joke and laugh... and mostly interrogate me over our relationship."

"Hm?"

You giggle. "Earlier they were asking me a bunch of questions, wanting to know how far we've gone with... you know... that intimate thing..."

Mayu tilts her head. "I do not understand. Surely they are aware that we spar every day, and we go all out in every iteration."

"That's not what they meant..."

Mayu pauses, picking up a flower and examining it. "I struggle to picture something more intimate."

You sigh. "Mayu, your mom did give you the talk about sex and relationships at some point, didn't she?"

"My father gave me some information, but I was too young to receive the rest. He died before he could expand my knowledge further. My mother made attempts, but later readings of textbooks informed me that her incredibly vivid descriptions of the act were far from the norm."

"I wish I could say I was surprised..." you reply. Mayu smiles as she takes your hand.

"It truly is good to spend this time with you..." Mayu mutters. "To be intimate with you... it pains me when we keep up the lie for my mother. I thank her for protecting my secret, but any time I see you and Mio pretending to be together, it creates a sinking pit in my stomach. Kazuma, I cannot stand to be apart from you."

>Me neither... Mayu, I think we should just tell your mother the truth.

"Kazuma..." Mayu mutters. She clenches her fist in worry, as you place a hand on her shoulder.

"I'm serious, Mayu." You run your hand through Mayu's soft hair as you speak. "I can't keep up this lie any longer. You and I aren't made for lying... and I can't keep being pulled apart from you. I... I love you too much to keep this a secret."

Mayu nods. "I understand, Kazuma. I feel exactly the same... but I cannot allow this. For your safety... if she finds out the truth of who you are-"

"Well, let's not go that far," you nervously chuckle. "It's still to early to tell her that. That... that's a death sentence. But if we're honest and tell her... tell her that we're in love, and dating, and show her how genuine our relationship is... then maybe she might accept it without trying to murder me. Now seems like a good time, your mother actually kinda likes me... I mean, as much as she can like anyone... which really isn't much. But she doesn't hate me! That's what matters!"

"Are you certain of this?" Mayu asks.

You nod. "Positive. I'm willing to take that risk... for us."

Mayu pauses, the nods. "Very well, Kazuma. If that is the case... then I will stand by you. For better or worse, we will tell my mother the truth. And if it turns out for the worst... I will do all in my power to defend you."

"It won't come to that, I promise." You take Mayu by the hand with a smile. "I know... that with you by my side, I'm brave enough for anything. Mayu..."

"Kazuma..."

The two of you lean in for a kiss, but you're interrupted by a flash of light.

"Whoops!" Kiriko laughs as she emerges from behind a tree with a phone in her hand. "Forgot to turn the flash off..."

"Kiriko!" You yell. "We were having a moment!"

"I know, I stumbled upon it and it was super cute!" Kiriko explains. "I had to take a picture, for memory scrapbooks! Mom will love it!"

You grumble as you motion back towards the camp, though Mayu pulls you back in and plants a kiss on your cheek.

The three of you return to the campside, where you notice Amaya tending to a Hanako who has recently fainted. "Whoa, what did that?" you ask.

Amaya points to the other end of camp... and you almost faint yourself as you see the massive bear carcass that Taiji and Tami drag in, the two Kajitanis more than a little covered in blood. A harrowed Ninsei trails behind them, wide-eyed. "That was a very disturbing sight..." Ninsei mutters.

"Agh, a fun time!" Taiji smiles towards his daughter, as if the two hadn't just hunted a massive predatory animal and are currently covered in it's blood while carrying it's body around. "You're even more brilliant than I could have imagined, Tami. It was like you were moving faster than anyone I've ever seen!"

... Wait, he doesn't know, does he? You suppose a man who spends most of his time in the wilderness isn't exactly following the news closely enough to see his daughter on it.

"It was awesome!" Tami exclaims. "You haven't missed a step, dad!"

"Oh, you flatter your old man!" Taiji smiles before letting out a yawn. "Anyway, time to take this bear with me."

Tami pauses. "You... you aren't sticking around a little longer?"

Taiji raises his eyebrow. "Why would I do that, sweetie? I already caught the bear."

"Oh..." Tami's smile fades, before she shakes her head and plasters on a new one. "Right... of course. What was I thinking?"

Taiji lugs the bear onto his back as he waves goodbye to his daughter. "See you around, sweetie. I'll try to keep in touch!"

Try? He'll try? What is this?

>This is bullshit! You're really going to disappear on your daughter again?

Taiji turns towards you, looking confused. "Oh... who are you again? Either way, I don't think you should be butting in on-"

"No, I'm not just going to stand back," you step forward. "Tami's my friend, and I can't sit back while someone hurts my friend."

"Kaz..." Tami mutters.

Taiji sighs and shakes his head. "Listen kid, maybe you're confused. I'm not... disappearing, okay? I said I'd try to keep in touch..."

"No, he's right," Ninsei chimes in, stepping forward with a pretty pissed off look on his face. "Who the hell do you think you are? What kind of father abandons his child so quickly?"

"I don't-"

"You're happy to bump into her and let her tag along on what you were doing anyway," Nisei spits. "Yet the second spending time with your daughter might even slightly inconvenience you, you're out the door again! Let me tell you something. You don't know how lucky you are to have a daughter like her, and I father who abandons their child is no father at-"

"Ninsei, Kazuma..." Tami sighs. "Let him go."

You and Ninsei look back at Tami, before moving aside. Taiji looks to his daughter and nods. "Sorry about this, sweetie... I will try to stay in touch."

Tami smiles weakly before shaking her head. "No you won't. It's okay."

Taiji sighs as he turns around and walks away, leaving his daughter's life once more.

"Tami..." you mutter. "Sorry for getting worked up. It wasn't our place to interfere."

"I don't regret a word of it," Ninsei clarifies. "Screw that guy."

Tami shakes her head. "Guys, don't worry! I'll be fine! I... I didn't need my dad around before! W-w-why would I... I need him now?"

Tami appears to be holding back tears. Ninsei, in a uncharacteristic moves, rushes in and wraps his arms around her, holding her tight.

"Whoa!" Tami gasps. "Ninsei, I'm covered in gross bear guts-"

"I don't care," Ninsei mutters. "We're here for you."

Sae approaches and joins in the hug, holding her roommate tight. "Who needs that jerk?!"

You join the hug as well, followed closely by Risa. "You have a family right here..." Risa smiles.

Soon, most of Class 1 smother Tami in a group hug, before the redhead finally speaks. "Thanks guys... but seriously, bear guts. Isn't the smell killing you?"

"Oh, definitely!" Kiriko exclaims. "It's the worst!"

The hug breaks away, as Tami and Ninsei move to wash themselves off by the lake.

"It was kinda overshadowed by the emotions and all..." Chuichi mutters. "But when Tami's dad dumped that bear here, it landed right on my tent. It's crushed."

"That's not too bad," you reply. "We still have two-"

"And Hanako fainted through hers."

"One tent... one tent for the entire class," you mutter. "Well... at least it's the big one. We could maybe possibly all fit in there... even if it is incredibly cramped and uncomfortable."

"Well, l-let's try not to stretch it out..." Mio mutters in a worried tone. "I really want to sell it good as new... aw, who am I kidding? That's not gonna happen..."

Everyone throws their respective sleeping bags into Mio's tent as the rest of you get settled in for the night. Girls go into the tent to change into pyjamas first, and boys follow, no peeking allowed on either side. To the best of your knowledge, the rules were upheld.

"Okay, time for truth or dare!" Mai exclaims as the class begins roasting s'mores around the campfire. "Easiest target goes first!"

"So that would be Kazuma..." Anri points out, as the rest of the class agree.

You stand confident and proud. You're not afraid of anything. The truth doesn't scare you. Your friends have all the power to taunt and tease, but there's nothing they can throw your way that can stop you.

"Okay..." Risa mutters. "If you had to pick any girl in class to be with, other than Mayu, who would you pick?"

... Dammit. That's a strong one, caught you off-guard. You should have know they'd have an ace like that up their sleeve. "I wouldn't be with any other than Mayu."

"Well duh," Sae replies. "But that's not what we're asking, Kazanova."

"That was a surprisingly learned reference from you," Chuichi points out.

"Shut it!" Sae fires back.

"See? That's the level of insult I expect!"

Risa sighs. "Our point is that if you HAD to choice someone other than Mayu, who would it be?"

You squirm as hesitate as you look over to Mayu. "This... uhh..."

"It is okay," Mayu nods. "I will understand your answer. This is purely a hypothetical situation, where I was slain by our enemies, and you had to move on for your emotional well-being."

"Why do you have to be dead in the hypothetical?" you ask. "Can't we just be broken up? Do you really have to die?"

"Why would we break up?" Mayu asks. "Was my love and care not sufficient? Did... did I disappoint you, Kazuma?"

You sigh. He sad face really gets your heart pounding. "Okay... you're killed by our enemies, then."

"W-what?!" Chuichi stammers out. "Hey man, are you sure you didn't mean to say Risa or-"

"As if you're complaining," you reply.

"True..." Chuichi admits with a grin. "Uhh... that's depending on if Kaiya will even agree to-"

"Yes," Kaiya states as she stares at Chuichi, unblinking with an intense grin.

"R-Really?"

"It's the rules," Kaiya points out, as she shuffles over to Chuichi.

Chuichi takes a deep breath as he prepares, jumping with nerves as Kaiya brushes against his side. "O-okay! I... I've never done anything like this before so give me some time to pre-"

Kaiya does not meat this request, puckering her lips with his and damn near eating his face off. You knew she'd be aggressive, but you weren't expecting it to be such a sloppy kiss. And you especially weren't expecting the lip biting. Chuichi topples over in his lawn chair with Kaiya still clinging to him, as the class hoot and holler. Even after the dare has long reached it's boiling point, the two just keep going at it.

"Well... they're going to be like that for a while..." you mutter.

"Amaya, you take up the role!" Risa exclaims.

"Oh!" Amaya nods. "Okay... Kiriko, truth or dare?"

"Truth," Kiriko replies.

"Interesting..." Anri mutters. "I expected her to be the daring type."

"Okay..." Amaya smiles, thinking it over. "What do you appreciate most about your friends?"

"Oh come on!" Sae groans. "Risa, why did you pick her? We can't follow up that juicy dare with this weak crap!"

"We've got plenty of time," Risa assures Sae.

Kiriko thinks over her answer for a moment. "Well... I guess that you're here. I wasn't the most unpopular kid by any means... but me and Kaz didn't have that many close friends growing up. But now... look at this. You guys are... wow. I'm actually kinda speechless when I think about it. You know... I just want to say... I love you guys. All of you."

"I can toast to that," Gado nods, holding his can of beer in the air, which begins to get shared around the class. Ninsei and Tami soon return as you question why they took so long, leading to a very clearly blushing Ninsei. Some drinking is had, the games continue and the party goes on... culminating in just about the entire class skinny dipping in the leg. Bold, wild and free... that's what Class 1 lives for, isn't it? This night... these experiences... you'll never forget them, no matter what comes next.

Chuichi definitely won't forget the skinny dipping part. That was... pretty wild, even if the nightly fog covered up most of your visions.

And then Class 1 shared an incredibly cramped tent, all packed in together like a can of sardines. With your sister pressed up against Roka by your side, and you cuddling into Mayu, you smile. "You look so cute tonight, Mayu..."

"And your cheeks are very red..." Mayu points out. "You look quite... cute."

"I think that's the alcohol... I'm feeling pretty light-headed too..."

"Didn't you only have a sip?" Sae's voice calls out in the tent.

"Ha!" Gado chuckles. "Kaz is a lightweight!"

You snuggle closer into Mayu as you drift off to sleep, an amazing day well spent.

And then the dream comes.

It's unclear. Like you're lying prone in a sandstorm. But the pain you feel in your gut... it feels all too real. You look down to see a gaping wound as you wince in pain. You look around, and what you see horrifies you.

Class 1. Broken. Beaten. Bloodied.

You shake your head. Dammit, you're never drinking again... what a nightmare. You look to your side and see the only member of your class with their body raised... Alice. She looks to you with fearful eyes, as you both hear a voice calling out in the dream. It's distorted... you don't recognise it, and yet it feels totally familiar.

"Come on... you should have known this would happen."

You close your eyes... and find yourself jolting awake in the tent. Just a bad nightmare. You let out a sigh... and look to see Alice, who was huddled very close to you, sitting up as well. "You saw it too..." Alice mutters. "Sorry, I guess I planted it in your brain because you were so close..."

"The Dreamer did that?" you mutter. "Was that one of your nightmares?"

Alice shakes her head. "Not me. Her."

Alice points towards Kaiya, sleeping soundly as she nestles into Chuichi.

"Kaiya... the one who has strange prophecies and visions of the future? You were experiencing her nightmare?"

Alice nods.

"... Crap."

"How do you think they'll react?"

Ryoji and Saki stand by the gates of the academy, hand-in-hand upon their return. Ryoji gives nothing more than a casual shrug to her question. “Who knows? Maybe they'll be happy, maybe they'll think it's a terrible idea. Probably both.”

“Oh, what does Nina think?” Saki proceeds to ask.

“She's ecstatic. She's in my head, she knew I was planning it for a while.”

“Planning it for a while, yet you ultimately decided to wing it,” Saki smirks. “Ryoji Shida, why am I not surprised?”

Ryoji shakes his head. “Either way, I texted the others to meet us in the courtyard. They're probably going to think that something is up, but I'm not in the mood to skirt around the news anyway.”

Saki nods. “You're right, I'd rather get the news out of the way immediately and not try to build up to-”

“GUYS!”

“Gah!” Saki jumps in shock as a certain monkey-like girl leaps onto her with a hug.

Akemi smiles with delight, before reaching into her pocket and pulling out a party popper which she unleashes into a small pop and fizzle. “I was saving that! How was your weekend?”

“It was...” Saki mutters. “Well... amazing. And... we have some big news...”

Akemi gasps. “Your music career took off? I knew it!”

Saki pauses. “W-what? I don't even have a... no. You see... uhh, Ryoji? Do you want to...?”

Ryoji chuckles slightly. Seems Saki is hesitant to spill the news. She's probably still in shock and processing the whole thing. “Well, Akemi, you're lucky. You're the first to hear...” Ryoji explains as he throws his arm around Saki and she presents her ring. “I asked Saki to marry me over the weekend, and she said yes.”

Akemi pauses, a massive grin slowly appearing on her face. Everything is still for a moment... before Akemi explodes into flowing tears with stars on her eyes and a proud smile on her face. Saki immediately panics. “Oh no! Akemi, are you okay?”

Ryoji nods. “Don't worry, this is peak Akemi. A pure explosion of joy... I've only seen it once before. Months ago, when the ice-cream tasting festival visited town.”

Akemi leaps up into a jumping hug onto Ryoji, clinging to his front tight with her legs around his waist. “You... You did it!” Akemi exclaims. “This is so amazing! It's happening! I'm gonna be best girl at your wedding!”

“I'm still pretty sure that's not an actual position...” Saki smiles. “But you're guaranteed a bridesmaids spot, at least.”

Akemi gasps. “You mean it?”

“Why wouldn't I?” Saki laughs. “You're the best, Akemi.”

“You mean a lot to the both of us,” Ryoji replies. “Thank you.”

Akemi smiles brightly, wiping away her joyous tears before transitioning onto Ryoji's back, the soon to be groom carrying Akemi in a piggyback up to the school courtyard.

“There's a lot you guys missed this weekend!” Akemi explains. “I finished learning the trumpet, and now I'm moving onto the xylophone! Nanami got a role in a commercial! And we're doing a sports festival with a regular school soon!”

“Damn, we're gonna have to sit down and catch up on everything,” Ryoji remarks.

The three make their way to the courtyard where they notice four people already waiting. Ken, Nanami, Rini and Kosuke stand by the courtyard, awaiting the arrival of the class head and main strategist.

“Yar!” Nanami exclaims, raising a flagon of ale that most certainly contains orange juice. “The good ship Sakoji returns! And it appears they've got a cute little barnacle attached to their side!”

“Yay, I'm a barnacle!” Akemi exclaims, before thinking. “What noise do Barnacles make? I want to say they 'nyan'!”

“Why?” Kosuke mutters.

Rini folds her arms. “Cut to the chase, why'd you call us out here? Who died?”

“Nobody died,” Ryoji replies. “We just have some important-”

“Ooh, nice ring!” Nanami exclaims. “A fine treasure acquired from the isle of wealthy cousins, no doubt!”

“Wait...” Ken mutters, putting the pieces of the puzzle together. “You say you have big news, Saki's wearing a ring, and Akemi looks like the ice-cream tasting festival returned... oh my god! Did you...?”

Nanami gasps, completely breaking character. “Holy crap! You guys!”

Rini looks puzzled. “Wait, what? What are you talking about? What did these losers do?”

Kosuke shakes his head and whispers into his wife's ear. Rini's face lights up... and she immediately tackles Saki. “R-Rini?!” Saki exclaims. “What are you..? You're smothering me!”

“Don't care!” Rini exclaims with a smile, ruffling Saki's hair. “You're actually doing it! The total nerd is finally joining the club! You two have finally done something right!”

Kosuke in turn approaches Ryoji as Akemi hops off his back. Kosuke briefly considers a casual handshake, but instead goes for the hug, which Ryoji is proud to reciprocate. “If anyone had told me when we first met that within a year you'd be engaged to Saki freaking Kobashi... I'd have called them completely insane.”

Ryoji nods. “Well, our lives are pretty insane.”

“Just know I inspired you,” Kosuke jokes. “Seriously, Ryoji. You're supposed to be the master delinquent, but you keep ripping me off... proud of you, buddy.”

Ryoji nods and smiles, before being mobbed by a hug from the more enthusiastic Ken, before all three are bowled over by Nanami in a group hug, incorporating Rei and Saki into the proceedings. Akemi of course jumps into the pile to make the love-fest even more populated.

“I'm so happy for both of you!” Nanami exclaims. “I always knew there was something, my fiction was always right!”

“You've both come a long way,” Ken says with pride. “We all have... what a crazy year it's been.”

“Now let's cut to the chase,” Kosuke jokes again. “Best man. Me or Ken?”

Ryoji smirks. “Nice try, it's both of you. I'm way ahead of you.”

Ken and Kosuke groan. “What a cop-out...” Kosuke replies. “Eh, but I'll accept it.”

“Same here,” Ken smiles.

Rini turns to Saki. “So, maid of honour?”

Saki lets out a small “Eep!” before gulping and trying to formulate an answer. “Well... I haven't really decided yet. I don't really want to choose a maid of honour at all... you're all too important to me to place one above the other.”

Rini nods. “I get it... but on the downlow, I'm the real maid of honour right?”

Saki chuckles nervously, as another student approaches. Rei walks up to the group, looking very confused. “What are you all goofing off about?” Rei smirks. “Ryoji and Kobashi were only gone two days. No need for the big reunion.”

“Rei... me and Sak are getting married,” Ryoji explains, causing Rei to freeze up.

“Y-y-you...” Rei mutters, wide-eyed and confused. “Y-you idiots! You're far to young for that crap! And what do you think you're doing, Kobashi?! How am I supposed to keep up with you now!”

Ryoji smirks. “C'mon, Rei. You're really bad at playing the grumpy act when you don't mean it.”

“Q-quiet you!” Rei folds her arms, blushing. “I'm real angry that you two... you two... ah, screw it.”

Rei rushes to Ryoji and embraces him, as Ryoji places his hand on the back of her head. He holds her tight, and she replies in kind. “I'm happy for you... Ryoji. And... I'm a little happy for Kobashi too, I guess.”

Ryoji chuckles. “Yeah, that's what I expected from you, Rei.”

Rei pulls away and places a small kiss on Ryoji cheek. “Good luck, you two.”

Rei turns to Saki and hesitantly offers her a handshake. “Where's my hug?” Saki jokes.

“Somewhere over my dead body,” Rei replies.

Saki shrugs. “That's a shame. And here I was inviting you to be one of my bridesmaids...”

Rei's eyes widen. “Y-you mean it?! I, uhh... not that I care...” Rei mutters, before Saki accepts the handshake, and pulls her into a hug. “N-no, stop!”

“Let me have this!” Saki protests, hugging her tight with a smile. Rei blushes and grumbles before returning the hug.

“F-fine... congrats, Saki.”

Ryoji chuckles as he looks to all his friends around him. This is only the surface, many more to break the news to, most of whom will have similar responses. Ryoji is both excited for and dreads Chihiro's reaction to the news. He'll likely be unable to move all day when Chihiro constricts them with her love and affection. Akihito will likely have some words of advice that Ryoji never asked for but that Saki will eat up. Sayeka will remain calm and maybe shed a single, stoic tear. Akio will say something inappropriate and Hikaru will chastise him for it. So many others, so many ways to take such happy news. Yet, Ryoji feels odd. He figured he would be dreading having to deal with every single member of the school's response one-by-one... yet instead, he can't wait. He's excited to see Chihiro gush over the nuptials and demand to be wedding planner, for Akihito to warn against moving too fast, for Akio to say something completely moronic. He looks forward to it all.

Because today, Ryoji is happy. He is truly happy.

"How about the Hell-ter Skelter?"

"Ooh, that's good!" Risa notes. "Demonland is shaping up to be a smash hit!"

"A ghoulishly good time!" Katsuyori jokes as he hands over an open bag of potato chips towards Risa. "Want a bite?"

Risa waves it off. "No thanks. I don't want to over-do it on snacks."

"Watching your weight, huh?"

"Rethink your next words very carefully," Risa smirks with a playful glare. "I was raised not to be gluttonous. It's just a piece of etiquette."

"Classic pampered no-fun princess," Katsuyori jokes. "It's a camping trip, you're allowed to let loose every now and then."

Risa snorts a laugh. "After what we did in the lake? I've had enough letting loose for one night. One of us has to be responsible, you know?"

Katsuyori leans back, sitting against a tree by the campside. "You sure like being the responsible one, huh? You're not the mother of your friends, you know?"

"I know," Risa shrugs. "Just feels... right to me, is all. You've met class 1. They're my best friends, but half of them run around like headless chickens. They need someone to keep an eye on them."

"Sounds like you should be the bodyguard."

"That sounds preferable," Risa notes. "I've said as much. Many times."

Katsuyori shrugs. "I don't get it. Heaping all these responsibilities on yourself. We're still only sixteen years old, we don't have a lot of time before we have to mature. Why rush to it? If I had it my way, I'd spend every day sitting back, relaxing, and watching tv. No responsibilities, no worries."

Risa pauses. "Didn't you learn to grow up by yourself? No offence, but I figured that would breed maturity."

"Colonel Goa always looked after me," Katsuyori replies. "I never asked him to, but... well, that's the way it is."

Risa hangs her head low, before scooting closer to the bodyguard. "So... if you weren't working for my dad... if all of that just... went away, and you were free to do what you wanted or go where you want... what would you-"

"Vegas," Katsuyori immediately answers. "I'd fly to America, live it up in Las Vegas, baby."

Risa groans. "Oh geez, be sure to think it over. That's what you'd do, huh?"

"What else would I do?" Katsuyori asks. "Living the highlife in a city of lights... that's the way for me."

"Can't say I'd miss you," Risa teases.

Katsuyori lets out a small laugh. "As welcoming as always. Don't worry, I wouldn't clear off immediately. If I had the chance... I think I'd stick around here for a little while."

"Here?" Risa raises her eyebrow. "Are you nuts? You'd actually stick around in Dakugeto? This town sucks!"

Katsuyori shrugs. "Eh... it's not all bad. There's some things I like around here..."

Risa stares at Katsuyori intently, studying him, before a wide grin appears on her face. "Ah, I get it! Sounds like you've got a crush on someone!"

Katsuyori looks away with a scoff. "As if."

Risa leans in closer with a smug grin. "Oh, you totally do. Spill the beans, Kats. Who is it?"

"Piss off."

"C'mon, you can trust me," Risa smiles, before clearing her throat and putting on a phony upper class voice. "Katsuyori Somethingorother, I command you as your superior to tell me!"

Katsuyori lets out a defeated sigh. "Fine... if you must know, I've had a little thing for your friend Mio."

"Mio, huh?" Risa leans back and places a finger to her chin. "I can see it. Shady, devious, underhanded... she seems exactly her type!"

"Yeah, we're completely made for eachother," Katsuyori mutters bluntly. "Are you done on this topic?"

"For now," Risa smirks. "Don't worry, I won't let you forget this tomorrow. But for now..."

Risa lets out a yawn, before resting her head against Katsuyori's shoulder. "Whoa, what are you doing?!" Katsuyori blushes.

"Shush," Risa closes her eyes as she settles in. "It's been a long night. Time to sleep."

Risa drifts off as Katsuyori begins to panic slightly. Risa's body moves slightly as she breathes in her sleep... damn, she was able to drift off fast. Katsuyori figures he should raise her up and carry her to the tent... but he hesitates. He likes this moment. He isn't ready to move from this spot. This point in time. Katsuyori looks down at Risa, a strand of hair blocking her face. He moves his hand to brush the strand away, but hesitates. He shouldn't. He can't.

Katsuyori lets out a sigh and swigs from a nearby can. Katsuyori... when he first arrived in this dump of a village, he had no expectations. No concerns, no cares. But now... he doesn't know. He's started to think... and thinking was never his thing. He does know one thing for sure though.

Katsuyori wants to be free.
