You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

A few days had passed, with the interrogation of Cole only having some measurable, but limited, success. Thanks to her, you were able to learn that what had once been three squabbling Zentradi fleets were now a single unified one, led by a central Warmaster who had seized control of an ancient Protoculture automated factory dubbed the Star Forge, and was now seeking resources to feed it.

And that was where the Zentradi incursion into Torman fields came in. This asteroid field had a vast wealth of common and rare minerals and elements that could be used in a variety of applications. Cole was willing to let slip that the Zentradi had captured Torman Corporation's main mining facility, and that they were in the process of reactivating it.

Obviously, the thought of the Zentradi securing a supply line for the Star Forge was unacceptable, which was why this meeting had been arranged. In addition to you and Lara, all the regulars: Dorothea, Karla, Amy, and Kellerman were present. Though you did have a two new additions, Torman and Michael. Torman was here since his mining facilities were at the center of this, while Micheal was representing SMS's interests.

"Well, we've done some scouting missions, and it looks like our prisoner's intel was on the mark." Kellerman grunts as he activates the holomap. "The Zentradi have set up a serious defensive ring around the main mining hub. Looks like about 300 ships, but the real problem are going to be these."

The map zooms in to show one of many boxy little space stations floating among the asteroids.

>>2554299

"Looks like the Zentradi brought in a large contingent of semi-stationary defense platforms. Not as tough and doesn't pack as much of a punch as a full size warship, but even one of these can give our Valkyries and smaller ships serious problems, and they've got hundreds of these littered around the area."

"I see." Dorothea nods. "And your conclusions?"

"A head on assault is just going to be a big mess." Kellerman warns. "I suggest we just bring up the Macross cannon and blast the mining hub so the Zentradi can't use it."

"And neither could we." Torman coughs.

"Well I'm sorry it'll put a dent in your checkbook." Kellerman retorts, though he earns an annoyed glare from Dorothea.

"Or concerns aren't just financial." Torman sighs. "Yes, our mining hub represents a significant investment, but our mining facilities are also this sector's primary source for raw materials. You won't be able to keep your fleet moving and fighting very much if you have to keep waiting for supplies to be shipped in from other sectors."

"That is true." Dorothea sighs.

You see a bead of sweat run down Dorothea's brow, a sign of the pressure she was under. Risk throwing her fleet into a meatgrinder, or settle for stretched supply lines?

"I agree with Torman." You speak up. "The mining facilities here are too strategically important to sacrifice."

Dorothea's eyes shift to you, as if gauging your intentions, before she lets out a small, almost unnoticeable sigh before continuing.

"All right, I'll consider seizing the mining hub instead of destroying them." Dorothea responds, looking to all of the gathered participants. "But I won't be sending the fleet in unless we have a plan."

"Well, if you ask me, we have a rather large docking facility on the edge of their defense zone." Torman says as he points to the holomap. "We've got two decommissioned NUNS carriers we re-purposed into mining ships, basically the flagships of our fleet."

"The Kuun-Lan and Fal-Corum." Dorothea squints as she reads the names. "Are they that important?"

"Speaking frankly, Admiral, these ships are basically entire mobile mining facilities unto themselves!" Torman boasts. "They can crack an asteroid apart and process it in a matter of hours, and the fabricators aboard are still fully functional, able to produce anything NUNS spec."

"So what you're saying is that they important enough that the Zentradi will pull forces to make sure they stay in their possession." Kellerman concludes.

"That's right." Torman nods.

"Also, from my experience..." Karla smiles as she chimes in. "Zentradi automated defenses tend to be highly centralized. If we can get a small strike team into the mining hub and board the Zentradi flagship docked there, we can turn all those scary defense platforms against their masters."

"SMS will provide whatever support is needed, as well." Michael notes.

"Well, we still gotta decided where our star is going to show up." Kellerman crosses his arms and looks to you. "Any ideas, Captain?"

You look to Amy, who just shrugs.

Well, you suppose it would be a matter of which force could use Amy's talents the most.

"I think you guys can handle the diversionary attack, right?" You suggest. "Perfect for a small, mobile force like yours."

"I agree." Dorothea nods. "SMS can handle securing Torman's ships. Meanwhile, I trust you can handle infiltrating the control center, Karla."

"It's what I do!" Karla grins. "I just need about a dozen good men and we'll be set!"

"Amy, I assume you'll be ready for this as well." Dorothea turns to the idol.

"Well yeah, of course." Amy nods. "But uh, I do have one teensy little request to make."

"Which is?" Dorothea raises an eyebrow. This was rather unusual for Amy.

"Can... can Cole be on the bridge too? Just to see me do my thing?" Amy asks. "I think... I think she may come around to our side."

"Bring a prisoner to the bridge?" Dorothea frowns, but you note she doesn't reject the suggestion right away, either. You suppose she also had a soft spot for the Zentradi ace, as well.

"Oh, she will be." Dorothea assures you. She then looks to the others gathered. "Then if there's nothing else, that will be our game plan, then. You should all be prepared to deploy. Dismissed."

And with that, everybody starts to disperse to worry about their own little preparations. You yourself have a bit of time before you have to go get ready to launch.

You follow Karla out of the room, intent to see what she was up to. After all, it wasn't like her to just volunteer herself for a dangerous mission like this unless there was something to get out of it, and you doubted it was something as altruistic as saving a few lives in the fleet.

Naturally, Karla is already waiting for you, leaning her back against the hallway wall, arms crossed with a smug grin on her face.

"My my, you are a curious pilot, aren't you?" She chuckles. "Are you still suspicious of harmless old me?"

"I just want to know what your angle here is." You grunt. "There's got to be something important in that command center, otherwise you wouldn't be going through the trouble of getting in there."

"Hmmm, sharp as always." Karla winks. "But sharpness is only going to get you so far. Why exactly are you so interested in keeping tabs on me?"

"No thanks." You shake your head. "I'd rather not get involved with something like that."

"Suit yourself!" Karla gives you a little wave as she takes her leave. "Good luck out there, Captain! I think we'll all need it!"

You watch her warily until she's well out of sight. You take a deep sigh and head for the hangar.

Once you reach the hangar, you're quickly pulled aside by Lara, a tired yet triumphant look in her eyes.

"It's FINISHED." She gasps. "IT IS FINALLY DONE!"

She continues to pull you to your Valkyrie, where you see the finished pinup in all of its glory.

"Lara, it's beautiful." You grin ear to ear, almost completely forgetting about Karla and her spook antics.

"Of course it is, I put a lot of effort into it!" Lara pouts and punches you in the shoulder. "Anyways, we're getting ready to launch."

"Yeah, just a second-" You pause when you see Dorothea, walking down the flight line with Kellerman. No doubt inspecting the troops before they headed out.

"Come on, let's get into the air." You motion to Lara as you start climbing up to your cockpit.

"What, you don't want to show it to the Admiral?" Lara blinks, look back at Dorothea, who was now fast approaching.

"I'm saving it for the optimal moment." You explain. "Now let's go!"

"Sure, sure!" Lara nods as she dashes to her own Valkyrie.

The two of you manage to pull out of the flight line and reach the launch deck before Dorothea has a chance to get a good look at your Valkyrie, thankfully enough. Outside, you could see NUNS Valkyries and warships massing, preparing for the push. Off to the right, you can see the Quarter and the small SMS contingent breaking off to perform their own diversion.

At this point, you figure that Dorothea should have returned to the bridge to direct the battle. Maybe one well timed pass...

Well, it was better to wait until after the battle. Dorothea was going to have enough distractions to worry about soon enough.

The buildup continues, with more and more warships arriving and forming up with the main attack fleet.

"All ships, SMS has begun their diversionary operation." Dorothea announces. "We've already confirmed that the Zentradi have committed their reserve forces to respond. All ships, forward!"

And with that the NUNS fleet starts moving, the capital ships ponderously lurching forward while the smaller and more nimble Valkyries and Ghosts swoop ahead.

There's no music over the open channel yet. Looks like Amy was waiting until the Zentradi showed themselves.

As you look on, you can see that the Ghosts have already begun engaging the first line of defense platforms, the small drones swarming around the large, blocky constructs like annoying bees. Of course, this also prompts a reaction from the Zentradi, and fighters and battlepods start emerging from the asteroid field alongside the more massive warships.

From you position in the back, you could see that there seemed to be a weakness in the line. A small gap between the coverage of two the defense stations that a small craft like a Valkyrie could exploit. A sizeable strike force could force its way through and hit the Zentradi inner defenses before they had time to respond.

Meanwhile, you noticed a Zentradi supercarrier hiding among the asteroids, taking advantage of the cover to disgorge its squadrons in relative safety. If you could destroy it or chase it off, it would hurt the Zentradi ability to keep their fighter squadrons reinforced.

Finally, there was what appeared to be the Zentradi flagship holding the center of the line. A massive hulk of armor and guns bristling in all directions, making a beeline for the Pacifica. If you could knock it out, it could cause the rest of the Zentradi fleet to crumble.

"Lara, let's go!" You say as you bank your Excalibur towards the Zentradi flagship, which looked intent to engage with the Pacifica directly.

"Whoooo, that's a big one!" Lara whistles. "So how are we gonna deal with that?"

You take a quick glance. The Pacifica was already in her humanoid battle mode, defensive batteries firing in full force while her escorting ships fired heavy particle lasers at the approaching Zentradi.

The immediate threats that you could see were the squadrons of Zentradi battlepods mixing it up with Kellerman's fighters, preventing them from getting close to perform attack runs on the flagship.

Meanwhile, you could see that the flagship's hangar bays were still open. You and Lara could potentially slip in and cause some havoc, which could cripple the ship.

Or, you could see that the Pacifica was trying to get into position for a Daedalus Maneuver, but there were a couple of Zentradi frigates blocking her path. Those smaller capital ships would certainly be more vulnerable and easier to knock out than the flagship.

"Right behind ya!" Lara says confidently.

And on cue, Amy starts off with her signature song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOaSh1-d9gc

And as expected, the Zentradi forces begin to falter and hesitate as their comms are blasted with pop music. As a result, this creates a hole in their defense net which you aim to exploit, diving your Excalibur towards it at maximum speed, your target being the open hangar doors of the flagship.

At these speeds and at this distance, it may as well have been the eye of a needle.

However, the Zentradi were not totally blind to your approach, and defensive batteries open up while fighters make a beeline towards you, guns and missiles spitting in your direction.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8Fwu147nX4

However, thanks in part to Amy's music, the attacks are sluggish and clearly telegraphed. In fact, time seems to slow to crawl as you bob and weave through the streams of tracers and missiles.

At this point, you're in your terminal approach to the hangar door. However, just as you're about to enter, you see a battlesuit stepping out, preparing to launch. Without missing a beat, you switch to battroid mode, slamming into the battlesuit with both of your Excalibur's legs in a brutal flying kick. The battlesuit is stent cartwheeling backwards into the hangar, pieces shredding off and flying everywhere.

Lara follows up, landing next to you in battroid form as well and unloading a stream of cannon fire and sweeping the whole the hangar. Docked battlepods and battlesuits are punctured and shredded, ammo and fuel reserves ignite and explode, and hangar crew are cut down.

"All right! Hangar is clear!" Lara says happily as she slams in a fresh magazine into her cannon. "Where to now?"

"Let's head for the bridge!" You tell Lara as you push forward, your own autocannon now drawn and ready.

"Right behind ya!" Lara says, taking position close behind you.

You open the hangar door just as more Zentradi crewmen rush in. Apparently a damage control crew, considering they were carrying firefighting equipment instead of weapons, but you gun them down all the same. They were still part of the enemy crew, after all.

However, you did take this as a good sign that the Zentradi haven't realized you boarded yet, probably thinking the commotion in the hangar was an unlucky hit from a weapon.

Suddenly, there was a rumble. You check your tactical screen and grimace when you see that the flagship has been gaining ground, pushing closer and closer to the Pacifica. At this rate, Dorothea would be forced to fire the Macross cannon, which would not be good considering you and Lara were still on the ship. You needed to hurry. Your Excalibur's GERWALK mode would be more than enough.

However, if would be a risk to just blow past the enemy as fast as possible.

No time to waste, you just had to blitz the bridge at full speed. You switch your Excalibur to GERWALK mode, hunching it down.

"Lara, we're going to have to double time it!" You grunt.

"Gotcha!" Lara affirms as she switches to GERWALK mode as well.

You and Lara blast though the hallways and decks of the flagship, strafing enemy positions that you could take out and simply flying past the ones you couldn't. Fortunately for you, the Zentradi crew are still completely unprepared for boarders, so your only serious opposition were security blast doors and the odd security guard or two. You and Lara are already at the doors to the bridge when the alarms go off.

"Shit, looks like they finally figured it out." Lara grunts as she slaps in a fresh magazine. "This is my last mag. Guess I gotta make it count."

You nod as you glance at the blast door separating you from the bridge. All it needed was a couple of missiles and you would be through, though you didn't what was lying in wait on the other side.

And as if on cue, Amy's music starts taking a more aggressive tone.

The biggest likelihoods are that we blitz them fast enough that guarding the door doesn't matter, or they have enough defenses in there that we can't take them alone anyway. Besides, we're also on a time limit.

"We go in together." You say. "Hard and fast."

"Just the way I like it!" Lara whoops. "Hit it!"

You turn your Excalibur back towards the blast doors and fire off a volley of missiles. They impact the door and explode, sending a shockwave of air, smoke and shrapnel flying. You don't even wait for the smoke to clear as you charge in, cannon blazing.

However, as you move in, you see something moving rapidly through the smoke towards you. You try to adjust the aim of you cannon to respond, but its too fast.

A massive Zentradi officer, presumably the captain of the flagship, emerges from the smoke with a lightning speed uncharacteristic of beings his size. He reaches and grabs your cannon, practically tearing it out of the hands of your Excalibur and tossing it aside. He then quickly follows up with a vicious kick to the midsection that sends you flying back, only for Lara to narrowly catch you and prevent you from falling flat on your back.

"Thanks, Lara." You grunt as damage warnings shriek in your cockpit.

"That's one tough fucker!" Lara observes as she raises her cannon.

However, the smoke begins to clear, and you can see what was left of the bridge crew was starting to regain their senses, the captain notwithstanding.

"Windows!" You yell.

Lara doesn't even need any prompting as she raises her cannon and fires the last of her magazine into the large bridge windows just ahead of you. The glass is thick, designed to withstand exactly these kind of impacts, but the volume of fire Lara unleashes is so heavy that the glass cracks and shatters, explosively decompressing the entire chamber and sending hapless Zentradi bridge crew flying out into space. You and Lara remain safe, however, thanks to you Valkyries being able to lock their position on the floor.

However, the Zentradi captain manages to grab a hold onto you, both to hang on for dear life as well as continue pummeling the hell out of your Excalibur.

You reach down and grab the Zentradi captain's arms with your Valkyrie's, using its superior machine strength to basically squeeze and crush his hands. The Zentradi captain roars in pain and fury, with no way to actually hold on to you now, all you have to do is let go and see him get sucked out of the shattered bridge windows with the rest of his crew.

"Holy shit, is that you, Neumann?" Kellerman's voice buzzes on the radio. "You crazy son of a bitch! That flagship's on a collision course with the Pacifica! You better get out of there before the Admiral blasts it outta the sky!"

"Hold up! I think we can get this ship under our control!" You tell Kellerman. "Just give us some time!"

"Make it fast, because that ship is already on a terminal course with the Pacifica!" Kellerman responds.

"Right, right." You stomp your Valkyrie over to one of the bridge control consoles while Lara keeps an eye on the door.

With on flick of a switch, and wires extend out from the wrist of your Valkyrie. A special electronic warfare package for situations like this. The wires slot into the console and there's a brief humming for a moment. Seconds crawl by like years until finally, you're rewarded with one simple message.

ACCESS GRANTED

You grin as Amy's song continues to echo in the back of your head. Looks like you just got a bit of a field promotion...
