Last Time on Worm Quest: You Stole Armsmaster's arm again, and stole the Undersiders from Coil. You then found out that fanboys had been marking territory in your name.

What is this: A Wormverse version of the Joker. With Tinker and Mover Powers. The universe is based on a Web serial about superheroes full of grimdark and sadness. The main character is essentially a person who is capable of experiencing fun and not immediately being punished by the universe, mostly due to incredible dice rolls. We had eight crit successes in the first thread alone.

How does it work?: D20's mostly, I keep a list of modifiers and stats on my computer. You have three actions a day and can do things.

Description of main character so those who are new don't immediately assume we're going full edge: He may be a bit evil and demented, he may kill a few villains, and he may be a general immature ass but at his heart, behind the white skin and teeth, he is still Barnaby Campbell, a kid who loves his mom and little brother and wanted to be a hero. [quote from thread]
>>
It is Wednesday morning in Brockton Bay, and like always you wake up incredibly early. Ready to take whatever today has to throw at you.
You check the news while you're waiting for the others to get up and not much seems to be happening, the other gangs are quiet and the Protectorate are still covering their ass after your humiliating defeat of the Wards. Armsmaster's comment about transcending his weak flesh body also appears to have gotten him into some trouble.
Your laughter almost wakes the others.

You have ten Alloy Cards, the Trickster's boots and Garb equipped. You have a Revolver and gas grenades. alongside your old knife.

Happy Zappers:Gloves that Electrocute Enemies: non lethal.
Madman's garb: heavy torso armour, full face helmet. strength enhancement, allows the use of Happy Zappers.
Trickster's garb, partial face mask. Lightly reinforced. dark colours for stealth. Molecular resistance field, basically mini krieg.

[Trickster's Cane]
This is a metal cane with an outer shell made of the same metal as your cards but smooth instead of sharp(obviously) it doesn't cut through things in the same way. Instead it softens whatever it hits and deforms it.
The cane also contains a directional electromagnet that allows you to recall your cards after they've been thrown, or technically anything magnetic enough for the beam to affect.

Playing card sized pieces of an anomalous alloy you can create, cuts via destroying the bonds between molecules.

One of the ideas that's been bumping around inside your head for a while now is what exactly caused you to mutate, why do you now find yourself with white skin and green hair? So you read up on genetics and gene structures, most of it goes over your head but you have enough of an idea how it works to get your Power in gear, letting go and allowing it to design you some stuff that might give you an answer.

Twenty minutes later, you find yourself with the blueprints to a computer of some kind, with space for a human being to be placed inside an attached vat. The vat also will contain lots of needles and saws. All made of your Inconel Alloy.

Tinker Upgrade: Gene Bay.
to be constructed.

After exiting your research room(A bunch of whiteboards and beanbag chairs) you find your new cape buddies lounging around your main room, watching TV and shooting the shit. They also aren't wearing their costumes anymore, having swapped them out for more comfortable "civvy" clothes.
Grue is a tall and muscular black guy, named Brian now that you're on speaking terms. wearing a skintight top and cargo pants
Regent is actually called Alec, and he's wearing a white shirt with jeans.
Bitch is Rachel, and all she did is take off her mask. You think she's wearing the same stuff she slept in, gross.
And Tattletale is Lisa, wearing a set of pyjamas and lounging on the couch.

After passing out some hello's and instructions to your new superfriends, you head into your workshop and start tinkering.

You fall down into the trance and watch as your body moves without you, nimble fingers weaving Alloys and circuitry into the right shapes and sizes before mingling them together perfectly. By the time you're done several interior walls actually had to be knocked down due to it being way bigger than you'd expected, Way fucking bigger.
The finished project is almost up to the roof and the terminal screen is also huge.

The bay consists of two parts, a large tank roughly four metres tall and three wide attached to some sort of huge supercomputer. Seriously, it takes up literally the entire room that you started building it in.

In the end, your power had to get Bitch and her dogs to help you drag more metal into the Inconel printer.

Once the machine is done, you step into the tank and give yourself a good scan tank before booting the machine up, time to see what all this bullshit is about.

The results are somewhat uh, terrifying.

Your genetics are all over the place, your actual DNA is so fragmented and busted that you are completely incapable of cell replication, so far the only thing keeping you from falling apart leper style is some sort of pulse that goes through your body every couple of seconds. the pulse itself repairs your cells and repairs damage to make up for the lack of cell replication. Thing is it's also changing you by taking the fragmented cells and replacing their genetic structures with something else.

Far scarier is how Right your power tells you the final product will be.

??? is Genetic Fragmentation.

Maybe you can reverse some of the effects with the Gene Bay, but you're far more likely to do yourself irreparable damage, or even accelerate the process.

Shit. You're laughing again.

Well, what's your plan now?

At first you decide to give it a go on your own, but whenever you try and use your power to figure it out the answer is just.
"It's all good bruh, just let it happen."

So you decide to drop this really heavy shit on Tattletale and see what she can do with it.

"Hey uh Lisa, when you can come to a stop. Can you come into the Gene Lab and talk to me for a second? Just need you to double check something."

"I can't do much about tinkertech but yeah sure, I'll be there in a sec."

Ten minutes later and she is sat on the sofa back in the living room surrounded by notes and laptops. Taking handfuls of Aspirin and chocolate while shielding her eyes from the light.

[Tattletale is exhausted]
Her next statement comes very quietly.
"Just take my notes and go please."
At least she's not screaming any more.

[Genetic Fragmentation research part One]
Using Tattletale's notes, you eventually figure out where the pulse is coming from, there is a growth on the brain of most humanoid Parahumans known as the Corona Pollentiae which is believed to be the source of powers. The pulse is some sort of energy field that rearranges the molecular structure of your DNA, putting it back into order.
You also realise that physical injury will lead to further mutation, as the pulse will "repair" the damaged area.

That's not encouraging.

Any action that target's a criminal is Heroism as long as it's generally non-Lethal

i don't get it. It's not like she is the one dying or something. And i juat realized that it's because our cells keep being destroyed and regenarated that makes her powers not work on us...Uh.

>>
>>2546047
>>2546067
Changing this to heroics then.
Steal shit from criminals and all that
>>
>>2546081
Well the consensus seems to be robbing gangsters (read nazis) so I guess most of the "crime" votes are heroism?
>>
>>2546091
Depends we can always target one of the banks the mafia use to store their ill gotten gains or some place were they use to laundry their money.
>>
>>2546087
I don't think he needs to, attacking those other hardcore criminals is heroic.

>>2546091
I mean probably yeah. Unless we just show up to bully people and take another arm. Speaking of which we need to start stealing other stuff, we're probably getting predictable with all this arm stealing.
>>
Alright, seems like you're about.
Stealing from thieves.

>>
>>2546102
Like his other arm? Or one of his legs?

I would also think heroism involves not killing them, which is a problem.

REMINDER TO EVERYONE HERE:

Armsmaster does count as a "hero" for the purposes of the Commit Villainous Acts option. So do the Wards, random innocents, and various other heroes.

DNA damage being repaired is what causes our mutations, which can and does also happen in real life, though not to this ridiculous scale.

The most common form of DNA damage IRL is UV radiation.
Those moles you get on your skin? Melanocytes - cell that produce melanin.
The reason why your body gets a tan after sunbathing? Melanin reflects UV radiation, and serves to mitigate UV damage.
What happens when you have mutation in your melanocytes? Skin cancer!

Better break out that sunscreen, eh boys?

The first indication that something might be wrong with your plan of walking into Empire territory is the fifty calibre round passing neatly through the middle of your neck. Sending you flying a good five feet backwards into air against a wall.
Fuck, you can't see where it came from either, in the movies there's always a glint or something off the scope.

[Victor OST: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s43yLMgXXOU]

But not now, you pull yourself behind the wall as you hear two more cracks, puffs of smoke breaking off bits of brickwork around Grue as he takes cover against a car.

You're on a three way intersection, there is a large apartment building in front of you. You reckon that's where they have to be.

Grue and Bitch aren't panicking, which is to be commended. Grue(being the edgiest boy in a five mile radius) subsumes the area around you in darkness, with a pocket in the middle for you to see. Then they he hurries over to you while Bitch and her dogs keep watch and occasionally make loud noises to draw the sniper's fire.
"Shit Boss, you still alive?"

You nod at him as you pull out your knife and a card, ready to get some tinkering done. You're way too cool to die.
You try to make a quick joke and relieve them a bit, but that's difficult with a massive bullet wound in your throat. The constant laughter mixed with gurgling and hacking coughs makes it hard to do anything.

Alright, so Genetic instability it is then
All penalties for extreme failure have doubled.
they will continue to double whenever you get close enough to die.

This is going to be pretty bad, you don't have anything you can use to stick your throat back together. You panic for a second before your Power helpfully provides a solution. If you accelerate your Body's regeneration it might heal you fast enough for you to not die.

Unfortunately once you allow your powers to take over, it turns out that you'll do that by poking your brain with your Happy Zappers. It's excruciatingly painful and takes longer than you'd like, taking nearly a full half a minute to fix your throat.

After fixing yourself you feel your body, it's not good. Every part of your body is in pain and you feel like you're going to vomit.

But that's somewhat by the white hot Fury burning through you.

Grue and Bitch watch incredulously as you get back up, the only remains of your colossal bullet wound being a swiftly healing scar. Your laughter reverberates off the walls of the city around you as you turn to Bitch and give your first proper order as leader of the gang.

"Bitch, Fetch."
She whistles sharply and her Hounds run off through the smoke.
There's a tense few seconds or but eventually a swift scream puts an end to the gunfire and not too long after that, Victor the skill vampire is dragged through the smoke and dumped at you and your crew's feet.
He's a tall blonde man, wearing a shirt with a bulletproof vest

"Hello there, vicky-boy how nice of you to drop in. I was afraid you'd shoot off before I could get my word in."

"Fuck you clown, this is Empire territory. You'll get the hell out if you know what's good for you."

You advance towards him, snapping out your pocket knife. "See if you wanted me to leave, you shouldn't have tried to kill me. Why is it that I never kill any Heroes? they're never trying to kill me."

"You're a fucking Bio-tinker, you can just fix yourself! Hell, you just did. It was just supposed to be a message, why do you think I didn't shoot the others?"

"This will be a message too..."

One quick lobotomy later you find yourself carrying Victor back to the Hideout on one of the dogs. You find a roll of money in his pocket and nick it, pulling him into your workshop as soon as you get back.
Some time later you find yourself with a wrapped box. The box itself is just cardboard but you've wrapped it with green and red paper with a small bow. This is going to be awesome.

You'll probably have to get someone to drop it off later.

You settle down for the night and grab some sleep, you also come back to some more homemade beds. Regent has been busy clearly.

After waking in the morning you exit your room to find a somewhat uncomfortable looking gang, Tattletale and Regent in particular are sat next to your Present. They stop talking as you enter, and give you some rather serious Looks.

Tattletale looks especially uncomfortable with the wrapped box, sitting as far away from it as possible. After you sit down and call the group together to get organised for the day, she clearly makes her mind up to ask some questions.
"So, I'm not questioning your leadership or anything. But are you okay boss, you looked kind of uh..."
"Demented". Regent fills in helpfully.

"That's not quite the word I'd use, but yeah. I mean you've gotta know that this will only escalate things right?"

This is not quite what you expected this morning, you just wanted to address the whole "tagging" problem.

OK, lets give some explanation to our powers. They work a lot on refles, thay are very automatic. The dementic laughter is an involuntary reaction to stress, having lobotomized Stormtiger and maimed Armsmaster? Also a reaction to fear. Then theres the time we went a little too far with our powers and turned us into this. So yeah, its a bit of a problem, we didn't exactly win the power lottery.

Yeah i guess your right, point is that it doesn't matter anyway.
I thing that Urban Gorilla warfare is the best way to play this.
If they try to attack us here, they are fucked
But we don't really have the man power to wage open war, so instead we should do stuff like this, random attacks, unpredictable and wild.
We run the risk of them all joining up to attack us, BUT we might be able to get the heroes involved to help if that what it leads to.

Gorilla Warfare is a overarching plan of attack, not something on the todo list, we can defiantly attack a rally, but there is other things to be done as well.
But yes the gas attack is a great idea.

>>2546835
More offensive action on our part is the goal here, Gorilla Warfare is how we achieve that goal.
This means
>Attacking random gang meet ups
>Gas whole rallies of people
>Hunting down villains that we know to be a problem when they least expect it
Shit like that.
We should be like Murder Batman, harassing and wearing down these organizations and taking out their ranks chip by chip.

Oh shit your right
Guerrilla warfare is the right spelling
Either way my point is clear, the best way to handle this is to take our small groups and do mini operations.
We don't have the time to build up a large force, the best thing to do is equip our team with the best gear possible and cause some mayhem.
>>
Oh this could go badly, you've only got a few friends and now you've worried them. Guess honesty is the best solution, it usually helps at least.
You consciously suppress your smile for the first time in a while, thinking of the best way to phrase what must come next.

"Look guys, there's something I've got to tell you. And it's about my powers. They're not like you guys, you get to choose when to use them, and you can turn them off when you don't want to do anything. Lobotomising Stormtiger was a reflex for me, cutting off Armsmaster's arm was like... blinking when somebody shouts in your face. It just happens. Me smiling and laughing isn't something I choose to do, it's my body's new reaction to stress. Even my Tinkering isn't voluntary, i do it by falling into a trance and watching as my body mixes stuff together."

"What I'm trying to say is, sometimes I go into the trances and do terrible things. But even now honestly I think I'm in the right. That guy worked for an organisation who's end goal was the eradication of all races except their own. Even Villains are supposed to give you a chance to back down before the bullets start flying, but he just put a bullet in my throat. Then he went after Brian."

"The Empire and the gangs have ruined so many lives, killed so many people. If I can stop them then I have to, no matter the cost. How many deaths would be prevented if Miss Militia put an Anti-Material round through Lung's head. Sure they're civilian deaths, but I don't think that makes them worth any less."

"Besides, He's not even dead. Othala can put him back together in a jiffy."

The others still look uncomfortable, and somewhat to your surprise it's Regent who speaks up next. A quiet sentence helping you truly understand the problem here.

"So how do we know it won't be our heads in the box next time you freak out?"

Well?

Unless your into that kinda thing in which case you need some help.

Easy! You don't try to kill me like some Nazi fuck and I won't try to kill you in turn. I act like everybody else until I'm pushed past my limits, and I only get pushed in times of great fear or stress.

As long as you guys don't trap me or try to kill me then I won't attack you. See?

It's not like I go off at the drop of a hat!

And hell even when I /do/ get crazy I still know not to hurt my friends, I've never hurt bruce.

I think a little honesty can't hurt too much in this context.

"Well why would you want to know? Predictability is anathema to comedy." Your first statement seems to only worry them more so you quickly try to recover. "Look, my trances don't just happen. I have to either get really scared and fucked up, or deliberately let myself fall into one while tinkering. Even then they're focused at whatever was screwing with me rather than just being directionless omnicidal rage, And you guys are the first real friends I've had in years."

The gang seems much more understanding now, though still clearly uncomfortable with the Victor-in-a-box.

Regent pipes up after a second, clearly having given the matter some thought.
"Fair enough. I guess being scared of someone because of something they might do is pretty hypocritical coming from us."

In the end you finish off your impromptu team meeting with the others much less uncomfortable, but the atmosphere is still a bit chilly between you.

Undersiders Relationship Changed: Terrified->Cautiously optimistic.

Tattletale comes up to you after the meeting and talks through where the taggers are most likely to be. "It's a fairly good chance they'll try and tag where you fought Victor last night given how loud it was. We could also check areas you've frequented in the past and that haven't been done yet. What's the plan Boss?"

Wait at the intersection where you fought Victor.

You and Tattletale head out into the city, combing the industrial district for whoever it is that's been marking your territory. At first you have little luck, only finding updated tags(They appear to have gotten better designs) and empty spray cans. Eventually however, Lisa has a rather clever idea. The hot dog stand where you fought Armsmaster the second time. There's a huge wall in the square there and it's right on your border with the Empire.

You head there via rooftop, dodging a few protectorate patrols on the way. As you head towards the square you can hear shouting and pull Tattletale into a bridal carry. Sprinting as fast as your mutated legs can carry you. When you reach the square you can see two distinct groups, a small mob of skinheads on one side hurling abuse, rocks and toting improvised weapons. Thirteen or fourteen in total.

The other side consists of what you first assume are merchants before you get a look at their colours and masks. There are tow smaller teens holding spray paint cans accompanied by three adults, one of whom is clearly the leader considering his prominent position.
The Teens are wearing very punk looking clothing, all skinny jeans and spikes on dark colours. They're being shielded by the older men, and hold no weapons except their fists. The two adults are wearing similar clothes but tougher looking and painted with bright neon colours. They are all wearing different variations of clown mask and are toying with wooden planks, pipes and brass knuckles.
The leader is much better equipped, they are wearing some sort of armoured vest over a long trenchcoat and holding a pistol in each hand. With their mask completely blank apart from eye holes and an Ace of spades where the mouth should be. Their gear is better painted than the others as well, with a reoccurring card deck theme and neon green stripes with the occasional purple accent. They have long hair, dyed purple at the tips.

The situation looks to be escalating, the Empire thugs are goading themselves into suicidal bravery while your adoring fans are hideously outmatched and staying completely silent but have multiple firearms.

The Empire mob is really starting to psych themselves up for the fight, so you decide it might be time to knock the wind out of their sails. You land on the mob's leader, Inconel reinforced faceplate slamming his head back into the pavement and breaking his nose with a sickly crack. A quick roll backwards and you find yourself staring down a much less enthusiastic group of thugs.

"God, I thought he would catch me. The nerve of some people right?"

The Civilian Brocktonites around you are crowding in now, Forming a rough circle around the two opposing gangs. You continue to be surprised at how utterly lacking in self preservation the people of this city are when it comes to capes.

You put on your worst German accent and continue chewing the scenery. "ZE TRUE MASTER RACE VOULD ALVAYS KNOW OF INKOMING AERIAL ATTACK JESTERS!"

This gets a round of laughs from the civilians around you, and cheers from the taggers behind you.

The skinheads are really starting to freak out now, those at the back are trying to push their way out through the onlookers, but are pushed back into the circle by vindictive citizens.

The leader of the taggers speaks up now, in a distinctly feminine voice with a very prominent southern accent.
"Let's have some fun."

Then she jumps forwards into the nearest thug and brings the barrel of her left pistol down on his head, knocking him senseless. Your other admirers roar and push forwards as well, beating on the thoroughly terrified gangsters with metal pipes and brass knuckles, the sounds of violence filling the air.

You mostly step back and watch the carnage, only intervening when necessary to avoid injury to your[/] minions. One skinhead gets hand cut in two with a card, while another is spin kicked into oblivion.

It helps that they're mostly too terrified to fight back, but your people are no slouches. Both are men, and they have builder's physiques. Large guts and arms that look like they belong on a gorilla. One of them takes a sledgehammer to the stomach and just keeps going.

After a few minutes most of the skinheads are on the ground, but some of them managed to slip through the crowd and leg it back to wherever they came from.

You take the opportunity to hand your present to one of the more conscious ones before letting him scarper off.

Afterwards the leader turns to you, and immediately starts stammering all over the place.
"H-HI Th-th-th. Hey-"

Maybe you should start with the speaky.

>>
>>2547209

I agree.

From a story standpoint they don't offer much except for a Grimdark button.

See that hope, nope it's dead now.

Worm works great when you keep it street level, as we see here. It's only when you go higher that you start to get into Avengers level territory and then everything gets overshadowed by the continual crisis that just keep popping up.

It's like comics basically, when you keep it real like Astro City then it's engaging, it's fun, you get invested.

But once you start throwing around planet killers and destroyed universes and unkillable monsters like all the other comics the sense of scale is destroyed and your investment gets lost with it.

What's one city compared to a world? What's one life compared to the species?

You look around at the decimated gangsters and breathe deeply, relishing the taste of victory. The taggers are looting the gangers and finishing off the cards and jester heads on the wall near the closed down food cart. All is well with the world.

You turn to the now silent fangirl and decide to start talking. Maybe you can defuse the now incredibly awkward situation by talking.

"So you're the guys going around tagging the buildings right? it's good work."

One of the Teenagers looks up and covers for the awkward badass.
"Well we do most of it, the guy who did the PRT building wasn't with us. Shame though, that guy was an actual artist. I can't believe he got grabbed."

"Yeah, bad luck there right?" You turn back to the group and shout to Tattletale "Hey TATS! GET DOWN HERE, WE'RE GOING TO LUNCH!"

This seems to shock your combat clown out of her awkward silence. "What?"

"I know this great little Italian place near the docks. We can talk there without getting interrupted."

"ok"

And so you're on your way.

I was actually considering changing the entities to being less like "We'll destroy the world." and more like just being amoral scientists collecting data.
I'll need feedback on that though.
Definitely keeping the endbringers though. I actually quite like them.

>I was actually considering changing the entities to being less like "We'll destroy the world." and more like just being amoral scientists collecting data.

I like that. It means that you can actually /reason/ with Scion, provided you can talk with him and he's not so depressed he won't listen.

It resolves the whole 'We've got to fight him now before he destroys the planet just to leave' issue, and makes it more 'we've got to get this asshole off our lawn before he fucks it up for everyone else.'

>>
>>2547237
Nah, they are okay. The purpose of the antagonist is to be a challenge for the characters, if you know that the stakes and that defeat is a possibility then that makes discovering the solution even better. What I'm saying is, Scion and the Endbringers are pretty great.

After a quick walk over to your second favourite pizza place, you find yourself ordering some pasta and sitting across from the self-proclaimed Maniacs. Tattletale at your side.
You're seated at a booth in the back of Luigi's. One of the waiters came and took your order almost as soon as you sat down, one of the advantages of coming in your combat gear. No one wants to be the waiter who walked past your table.

"So why are you guys going around and spraypainting my face everywhere anyway? I never said that I wanted to run anything."

The five of them look a bit scared at the turn the conversation has taken, and turn as one to their leader
Their masks are still on, but they aren't really trying to hide their body language from you.

"I uh, I had an idea. After word got out about what you did at the hospital, and how chill you were to heroes and us normals. I thought that we could scare off the gangs, by putting up gang signs that made them think you had taken over our neighbourhood. Then we got a couple of other guys and had them do the same thing. They have work though so they aren't with us all the time. It worked, so we kept doing it where you'd been seen. The other gangs are scared outta their minds about you, so once they were up no one took them down."

huh.

Your food arrives just as she finishes her explanation, giving you an excuse to sit and think through the situation.

What other questions do you have?

Why go with venom when we could just give them full body improvements?

A group of Mover 3's jumping and leaping all over the place, blasting with tinker weapons and throwing out laughing gas grenades can do a hell of a lot more than a lumbering behemoth.

A lot more subtle too.

"So what? you just wanted to use me for my pretty face. That's a hell of thing to drop on a guy. And he might not take it well." You're mostly messing with her, but if she is just doing this for herself then you're gonna have to get her to stop.

She looks mortified as you ask the question, and waves her hands in front of her as she starts stammering again.
"Wh-What, No! I. Y-You're different to the other capes here alright, you actually go into the places where people need help. Without you my dad would have died at the Dockworkers union. Me and the others here, we owe you so much. I wanted to get your attention, so we could help. You're an actual hero. The PRT just sit in their offices and patrol the Boardwalk but you actually go out there and fight the gangs." She's silent for a moment as she calms down and takes a breath, her previous statement being given at lightning speed. "And I saw your fight with Lung, it was right down the street from my apartment. You and that bug girl kicked his ass. I got to breathe in some of that gas stuff, it was awesome... And I heard what you said afterwards too. I'm not a cape, none of us are. But the gangs are eating us, and the protectorate can't help."

There's a long silence there, you Hate awkward silences.
"So what's your favourite breed of dog? This is an incredibly important question by the way. it will be on the test."

There's a round of slightly strained laughter around the table as they list their favourites, from terriers in the male teen's case to the leader who prefers greyhounds.

"After that truly intimate question, i'm going to have to know your names. I feel like we probably should have introduced ourselves first."
The leader of the group is called Piper, and is from Texas originally.
The two huge guys are Reggie and Ronnie: brothers who've always lived in Brockton
And the two artists are Alice and Ted, they're in a relationship.

"How many guys do you have then, in total?"

"About ten, not counting who we have here. We kept it small so there was less chance of being found out."

You should probably tell them about the probably incoming gang war as well, that seems important.
"Alright, last thing. You know that box I put gave to that skinhead, that's going to make Kaiser really mad, there will be trouble. You're cool with that right?"

"Of course, we knew that the other gangs were gonna send capes after us eventually. We just hoped we'd be working with you by then. I reckon I could take a weaker cape if I had surprise, someone like Rune or Victor." She actually sounds fairly confident there. At least she's confident some of the time.

You and the others are finished with your meals now, and stand up as you finish making your decision.
You're cool, wanna join my gang?

You're outside Luigi's now, and you have finally made your decision regarding the Maniacs. You'll keep them, they seem pretty cool.
"So you guys really want to join up with me then, and (not to put too fine a point on it) fight literally every other major faction in the City? Potentially putting your lives and reputations at risk."

They look between themselves, clown masks now firmly secured once more.
There's a discordant and slightly staggered "Yeah" from the assembled vigilantes.

Fair enough, you made sure. Best to take them at their word.
"Okay cool, You guys wanna see my Hideout?"

Many heads nod, and one of the young artists suppresses a squee. Wow, is this what being popular is like?

Upon reaching the Hideout, many of your new gang members vocalise their amazement, at least once you get inside. Even more amusing is when they meet the Undersiders, who seem surprised to now have "minions" as Regent so humbly proclaims.
Your two biker friends seem to resent the implication, but take it well.

It is late, but not too late to get some stuff done. Grue and Regent bought chinese this time, but there's plenty left over.

While you'd love to sit down and chat with your new gang, or eat gratuitous amounts of leftover Chinese the fact that you are slowly mutating into a monster is somewhat more pressing. Especially given how poorly you feel right now. You place yourself inside the gene bay and take another scan, hoping against hope that you're okay. But you're not, it's so much worse than you thought. Right now your body seems to be on the cusp of transforming again, with only a slight increase in genetic fragmentation before you are mutated even further away from humanity. However there is a silver lining, you feel that you probably understand enough about genetics to mutate others in controlled ways. It would have to be very minor changes but still.

[Genetic Recombination unlocked]

Another option opens itself to you however. There are certain parts of your genetic material that still function correctly, this is why you look mostly the same but with minor cosmetic changes. If you were willing to permanently change some of this genetic material into the Updated code, you might be able to reverse your overall genetic Fragmentation at the cost of permanent and irreversible mutations.

Can now permanently mutate yourself to reduce Fragmentation.

[Unfuck your genetics 3: Unfuck Harder Unlocked]

You are super fragmented right now. give the new idea a try?
>>
>>2547880
We got any idea what these irreversible mutations will be?
>>
>>2547880

>implying we won't abuse the fuck out of this to become beyond Titan Joker and back to ordinary Barnaby Campbell whenever we feel like it

>>2547880
So our options are
>use other people's genetic data to attempt to unfuck our own
>use the normal parts of our genes to reverse genetic fragmentation, but give ourselves irreversible mutations
If those "irreversible mutations" involve keeping our green hair and pale skin and warm smile, then sure, let's go for the new idea.

It's better then random mutations, which were gonna get if we don't go down this route. I think we should aim for regeneration
>>
>>2547895
>>2547908
I think when the QM says irreversible mutations, it means mutations we can't reverse.

That's for you to find out by researching genetic fuckery. but this is the earliest method of reversing your fragmentation, so probably also the worst over all.

Fine then.

>>2547911
I think so too. If we can selectively choose what to keep and what to reverse, then we satisfy the shard while also keeping our humanity/sanity relatively intact.
Again, I'd rather keep the green hair, pale skin, and... uh....

You have to defragment you genetics somehow, and you only have one method so far. So you program the system, take off your clothes and step into the Gene bath.

The inside of the bath fills with a green liquid, though you can still breathe through it which is useful.
You need oxygen to live.
At some point you lose consciousness.

You awaken on the floor of your laboratory some time later, with Grue and Tattletale beating on the other side of the door leading to your lab. Of course it's completely pointless, the entire thing is made of Inconel. Almost two inches thick.

The first time you try and answer, you just choke and gurgle on your own tongue. It's much longer than you remember, and once you pull it out long enough to see it.(A good foot long) you also discover that it happens to be bright green, the same colour as your hair.
It takes you a few tries to actually speak, in the end you manage to choke out a quick sentence.

It's Okay, I'm fine.
Oh, that's even more unexpected.

The bashing stops for a second before resuming at a much higher tempo.

"Whoever's in there! You've no way out"

You pull yourself up, pulling your neatly folded casual gear onto you as quickly as you can. The taunting and yelling continues from the other side until you stagger over and open the door, being quickly shoved to the ground and mounted by Grue with his fists raised. A second later he comes to his senses and pulls himself off of you before helping you up.

"Oh shit dude, sorry."

"Nah, it's fine, besides I appreciate the attention. Though you're not quite my type."

The assembled gang members give you another Look, except Piper who appears to be blushing. And Regent, who is laughing at your magnificent as usual sense of humour.

"Well, It's just another mutation, no need to freak out or anything. Don't you have things to be doing anyway? And someone fetch me some leftovers from dinner, I'm famished."

You can't let them see you break down.

It's very late in the evening now, and you don't have much time left before you do actually need to sleep. But there's just enough.

You now receive a -2 to all attempts to conceal your identity.

What would happen if we reached the peak of genetic fragmentation? How is that different from the many little mutations we can be picking up by reducing?
>>
>>2548474
My guess is a horrible deformity with no seductive ability whatsoever, like a tumor or something
>>
>>2548474
I think is we cap out fragmentation we automatically mutate which could include bad mutations that make living harder. I think we're trying to balance getting good mutations on our own volition while risking getting bad ones from injuries that increase our fragmentation. Assume we ignore finding a way to stop it slowly going up.
>>2548437
Thank you anon. I will create the greatest of puns to drive Armsy, we really should just call him this from now on to annoy him, into madness!
>>
>>2548474
Every time you hit max genetic fragmentation I roll the dice on my Complicated ListTM and give you one mutation for each fifteen fragmentation. so if you max out now you'll get four.

but when you choose mutations not only is it more favourable because of choice. it is also more efficient at one mutation per thirty Fragmentation.

>>
Okay, earlier in the story our power said that the final outcome of what the body is turning into was referred to as perfect. Was that referring to the mutations caused by that, or is there is a limit we are filling by getting more mutations? Or is it that we can just mutate our mutations sort of deal
>>
>>2548527
I feel like we are progressing to that end goal through our own means at this point, by choosing what mutations to give ourselves in return for stability. In this way, we end up as a one-man army, while also keeping our humanity mostly intact except for cosmetic things (for now).
If we progress to the end goal through injury-induced-fragmentation causing us to severely mutate randomly, then the end goal is us ceasing to be human but becoming a living laughter zone, or something.

Wildbow wrote this about a theoretical Tinker 15, but it's so fucking spitefully ironic and grimdark that it's impossible to take seriously.

>You can build anything, and you can manifest advanced materials with which to build more, secreting it from your body. Further, your produced gear upgrades itself over time.

>However, this comes at a cost. Your volition is gone, the shard is in full control, and in the course of its building frenzies, you're a mind trapped in a body that has been altered to a cyborg state, every limb and joint bending painfully in the wrong directions as you scurry and lurch this way and that, vomiting out materials that tear up your throat and mouth, and knock teeth loose, or feeling red hot agony as ceramics and hyperspecialized alloys thrust their way out of your body in spears and slabs.

>Because the shard doesn't know how to take care of a human body, you fester, maggots eat dying flesh, you starve, and the solutions the shard devises and tinkers to sustain its host only barely keep you sustained, hauling you back into existence when your body or mind start to give. It needs you sane, for the occasional reference, so it drugs you to do just that.

>Your waking existence is forever dying and slowly going mad, but never quite getting that release, filled with dread for those moments that are absolute torture, where the shard produces materials. Your sleeping existence is worse, because you get a sense of how the shard thinks, and of why things are the way they are. You were a threat to Scion, his path to victory figured that out, so he took you out of play in the most efficient way possible. By destroying you, and making you a tool against humanity.

This pretty much sums up Worm and Wildbow's writing as a whole.
>>
>>2548552
Wow that's incredible fucking stupid.
>>
>>2548552
I have no tools, and I must tinker.
>>
>>2548563
>Wow that's incredible fucking stupid.
How so?
>>
>>2548569
Aside from how needlessly dark it is, it doesn't make much sense. Why would Scion have some that pre freakout? What frame of reference could the shard possibly need to "Keep you sane" for? Why are you able to comprehend how the shard thinks only at this level? Why would this be preferable to Scion instead of just killing you? I could go on.
>>
>>2548584
I agree it comes off as an edgy fuck you for thinking about that thought you had. I
>>
>>2548569
Why the fuck wouldn't the shard know how to properly take care of a human body? It would be far more efficient to have you be in no pain at all. It's needlessly grimdark, to the point that it stops making sense.
>>
Once the others have gone and your customary meltdown is over, you begin designing uniforms for your henchmen. At first you start with more costumey designs, focusing more on aesthetics, but to be honest what your mooks need is protection, if the other gangs outnumber you ten to one, you need to be worth ten men. In the end what you actually create looks very similar to a police vest, with large pockets that your alloy plates can be placed into creating a sort of scale armour type effect.

It will take until tomorrow night to create enough to outfit all your men and women with the new armour, more if your capes want some. And it will tie up your matter converter, but it's still a good investment.

[Matter converter in use until tomorrow night.]

And so you settle down to sleep, with your incredibly weird but also kind of hot voice and uncomfortably long tongue.

>>2548584
Worm suffers from the same problems that most superhero stuff does. Armsmaster chasing Manic across rooftops for daring to want a hotdog is fun and exciting. Scion being the equivalent of that guy on the playground going "nu Uh my shield is perfect" just gets obtuse after a while.

I think that Worm should have been a story about fighting the Endbringers and eventually figuring out that it was all Eidolon's fault. and fighting him. Because the Endbringers can be killed. They have by definition a weakpoint. And Eidolon's power has restrictions.
>>
>>2548584
I agree that this is pretty ridiculous in how spitefully grimdark this is, but thats kind of why I like it. It reminds me of a well less thought out IHNMAIMS in how the punishment is completely absurd for such a non crime, yet the victim is, in a round logic kind of way, suffering a fate he brought on himself.
>>
>>2548621
I agree. By the end I was just getting so tired. I did think it was cool getting the endbringers to fight Scion though.

>>2548627
IHNMAIMS is a bit of a different beast though. Right out of the gate you get the gist of why things are playing or as they are and at least one of the characters do deserve that fate, but worm doesn't have a justification for how much the universe shits so purposefully on everyone. The entities didn't really have any ill will at humanity specifically (at least until Scion found the corpse of his mate, but he was already killing for the sake of it at that point.)

I haven't read Worm, and know pretty much nothing about it except for snippets on the wiki and this quest. However, lets leave the entities out of this for a moment and pretend our story has nothing to do with the overarching plot. I like that as the eventual end, the eventual reward and ultimate power gained at the end of a story is actually a worse fate than if the protagonist just committed suicide at the start of the story. After all, we already view ourselves as above normies, and even above other capes. It only makes sense that the logical conclusion is turning into a horrific monstrous shell of our former selves, casting aside all humanity for the sake of power.

If we purposefully set out at any point for power for the sake power then sure. But so far we've only really been making the best of the a shit situation. Our powers that we got involuntarily are slowly driving us insane, and have drawn gangs to try and forcibly recruit us. That's all fair. And I don't want the QM to change the tone of the story to anything he doesn't want it to be. I just really like the idea of being fated to a horrible end. I mean, we're already sort of fated to be the joker, what with our skin turning white and our hair green and all the other stuff, and joker never has a 'happy' ending. Thats why I like telltales vigilante joker so much, even though he genuinely wants to be, and tries really hard to be a hero, hes fated to become the evil villainous joker we all know he has to be. Although I understand that grimdark stuff has been done to death, in good and bad media, and a genuinely lighthearted story is pretty refreshing.

Hey. What if we tried tinkering a way to trigger superpowers in our subordinates? End up creating something in the vein of the Ludovico technique?

That might be funny.

Danny Hebert was sat across the table from his daughter, trying desperately to come up with something to say. He'd realised that the two of them had drifted apart some time ago, he'd just made all sorts of excuses as to why. But the thing about perfect memory is that it forced you to confront things, things like how long it has been since having a conversation longer than a sentence with your obviously troubled daughter. Now Danny just has to figure out the right way of going about it. That's the difficult part though.

"So, how was school today Taylor? You have a good time?"
He regrets the sentence almost the instant it left his mouth, why would she want to talk about school? Especially after the locker. Her response is the expected one, and the same as what he's heard every other time he inquires as to her wellbeing.

"It was ok. Not much happened."

After Annette's death, the two of them had become distant, mostly his fault now that Danny thought on it. He had thrown himself into his work and ignored his daughter. Well it's time to man up and be the man he was supposed to be, his daughter needed him dammit. He also appreciated the confidence boost his powers came with, it may just be cockiness resulting from being able to tank bullets but it really helped.

Still though he had to be careful, if he pushed too hard she'd just retreat into herself. He'd had enough of that.

"Hey, I was thinking we could head out to the boardwalk this weekend. Maybe watch that new movie from Aleph, the one with the dinosaurs."

"Sorry, I kind of have some stuff planned on the weekend. "

And so another failure. It was beginning to seriously piss him off. There has to be some way of getting her to open up. Danny's almost relieved when the first Empire Hitman busts the door down. There's very few conversation starters that are as easy to hold onto as, "Stay back, I'm gonna kick ass with my superpowers."

And as a skinhead with a shotgun turns the corner, he finds himself staring down an eight foot tall Demon with a spear.

Some time later, Rat King and skitter are sat in their kitchen, surrounded by unconscious goons. The silence between them is still awkward, but slightly more personable.

"So, bugs huh?"

"Yup. And you're a rat demon."

"It does follow the whole vermin theme."

"Guess so."

You would expect conversation to become much more difficult after such a revelation, but as they waited for the PRT to arrive both father and daughter were smiling.
Vigilante violence is a hell of a way to bond.

>both of them are capes
>Taylor's dad was the guy we saw at the Dockworker's Union attack
Oh fuck. It's happening. Everything connects together.
Maybe Tay-tay might be a better character now instead of "curse my shortcomings, time to ignore everything wrong with what I'm doing and do horrible things to other people because I feel like I have to"

So because the control admin shard went to Taylor, his dad instead gets a breaker power that lets him transform into a rat demon that can create material spears out of things around him and fuck with people's heads? Maybe also perfect memory from his power? While keeping the rat theme? Cool.

>Breaker triggers are perhaps the hardest to define. On one hand, Breakers emerge from triggers that blur the line between physical and mental. It's not enough for trigger event to have a physical and mental element: The two must be indivisibly linked.

>On the other hand, Breaker powers emerge from abstract stressors, or from threats that are hard to define or explain. They often involve self-contradictory feelings. For a Mover, this might include things like wanting to escape on a physical level while mentally feeling that the situation is safe, the inverse, or something more abstract, like wanting to escape reality on a spiritual level and finding oneself unable, or wanting to escape a concept or wanting to escape something that cannot be avoided on a fundamental level.

The issue is that Danny must have got powers BEFORE the Dockworkers Union attack, or else Alabaster and Manic would be downed temporarily from the entity vision from being in the vicinity. Hmmmm.

Depends how large the vicinity is. It seems more like he triggered inside the building somewhere and then made his way out.
>>
>>2549322
Wait, they're in their kitchen? They were attacked at their house?
>>
>>2549367
Seems like it. E88 probably tracked down Danny after the DWU attack, and found his house.
