So, this was supposed to go up Sunday, but you all know what happened there, haha! For once, it wasn't my fault, huzzah!

Right. quite enough of that!

Anyway, so I'm considering two runs a week, maybe Saturday and Wednesday or something. Not sure yet, open to input. Also thinking of trying that whole 'content creator' thing again, so is there anything else you guys would be interested in- streaming, something like that? Not sure I wanna go that way, but hey, to get something you've never got you gotta do something you've never done, yeah?

Hah!

In 1989, your father made ace in his first live engagement with soviet aircraft.

You made ace in the first thirty seconds.

The sky is so thick with bandits you can’t help it- almost anywhere you turn, there’s another hostile aircraft, filling your gunsights. You’ve barely had to use any missiles- the simple fact is, in this close, you’re having trouble getting enough of a lock on anything before a better gun target presents itself, even with the VDNI missile queuing system.

Even with that, though, the fight is pushing closer to the carrier group- inside eighty miles, now. Anything armed with antiship missiles is almost certainly in range to launch- but they’ve all been occupied dealing with you and the remaining fighters of the Lincoln’s battered air group. It’s clear, by now, they weren’t counting on your presence- there’s been no hint of the UCAV swarms that got the spellcaster wolves in the opening moves.

There’s been no sign of witches, either- which does bother you. Intel says that normally, they’d be seeded in with an overwhelming attack like this, to prevent hostile witches from taking it apart. And, while they’ve done significant damage, they haven’t eliminated the Lincoln or her air group, and they’ve absorbed pretty horrific casualties themselves, judging by the data tracks.

“Splash Six.” you call, watching the flaming wreckage of a Mig-29- or one of the Chinese-built knockoffs of the 90s, it’s hard to tell- break in half and tumble out of control, the pilot riding the ejection seat out of the fireball.

“We’ve got their attention now.” Kim says, her voice calm- even if she’s working to maintain the facade through her fear. It came back the second you engaged, and it’s stayed there, solid, like a weight chained to her. She’s covering it up, but she’s having to fight through it, and it’s distracting you slightly. Fear, especially through VDNI, is infectious. “Multiple bandits now turning our way. The Lincoln’s group is still heavily engaged, but a few of them are in position to help us if you want.” She says, still trying to focus on her job.

[] Engage them solo- The Lincoln's airgroup has already sustained enough casualties and you can handle it, even if you won’t be able to chase down any of them bugging out.
[] use yourself as bait and set them up for the Lincoln's fighters to hit these guys- it’s riskier to you, but could set up the bandits for a lot more losses than they’re willing to take anymore
[] Call for the Lincoln’s fighters to assist- try to knock down as many of these bandits as possible.

We ought to chew these guys up good so we have more time to recover in the aftermath.
Welcome back! Glad to see you.

You know, Frank and Merlin aren't so far away, with a combat capable plane and no shortage of skill or talent.

Glad to have you back. Better than Planefag indeed.

I understood that there were a lot of planes in the air I just didn’t grasp that there were A LOT of planes in the air.

There are so many planes in the air we probably could have leaned out of the cockpit and thrown pointed sticks and still made Ace.

[x] use yourself as bait and set them up for the Lincoln's fighters to hit these guys- it’s riskier to you, but could set up the bandits for a lot more losses than they’re willing to take anymore

You take a split second to review the data stream, Papa Legba’s computers presenting it in such a way that you can spend the same effort as you would to glance over something to get a full picture. Combined reports and loss tracking- even adjusting for overclaims- puts the combined hostile losses at nearly sixty aircraft. Most of them, you know, are what would be considered second-line these days- Mig-29s and their clones, some Sukhois and knockoffs of the same, but about a dozen are the more modern Chinese frontline fighters. They’ve absorbed losses that would have crippled a carrier air group- but there’s still easily another hundred or so in the fight, even with you tangled in the leading edge of it. Thankfully, it’s not just one massive furball- it broke up into dozens of smaller engagements before you got here, it looks like. Still, there’s a lot more of them than there are of you.

You entered the fight missiles secured- and you’re willing to bet more than a few of the Lincoln’s fighters still have theirs, as well. Parsing the information one more time, you see an opening- if you extend low and to the east, there’s no way they’ll miss it- and there’s no way they’ll be able to resist the opening on you you’d be presenting. But it’d allow any of the Lincoln’s fighters to engage with missiles, and give them almost the perfect target.

You lay out the plan nonverbally- sketching the data tracks on the plot as you slot in behind another Sukhoi and disseminate it to the net as you splash your seventh. Part of you worries- where are the witches? No sane commander would order an attack like this without them, and no sane leader would take his men into one. You can’t worry about it now though as multiple aircraft- and the cruisers, now in range with their SM-6 missiles- confirm your plan and signal their readiness. Interestingly, one of the witches up from VF-3 also signals their confirmation of your plan- she must either be in variable strikers or have a talent for speed.

Kim’s surprise stabs through the link as you hurl the Fenrir into a diving turn, cutting open the jets. Even playing as bait, you’re going to have to take some precautions- while your defenses are excellent, they’re hardly foolproof, as is evidenced by the fate of the Spellcaster wolves. Still, you can ‘see’ multiple bandits breaking in your direction, your lone Fenrir proving to be an irresistable target.

“I’m tracking ten bandits on us.” Kim says, sounding kind of nervous- the first she’s actually said in a couple minutes. “Multiple tracking sensors, multiple bandits. getting hard to track them all. More joining in on them, and- BREAK RIGHT!”

Kim’s shouted order triggers an instant reaction as you slam your fighter into a crushing right hand turn, narrowly evading a burst of tracers, intended to intercept your armored canopy. “Multiple witches!” Kim warns as they begin to pop up on your sensor suite- they must have been masking behind one hell of a stealth talent, you figure.

[] Change of plans, engage these witches! You can’t let them get away, you’ve got to at least hold them here for VF-3 to engagement
[] Stick to the plan- they’re just as likely to focus on you as not, and a missile can kill a witch, especially if she’s distracted.

>[x] Stick to the plan- they’re just as likely to focus on you as not, and a missile can kill a witch, especially if she’s distracted.

Lead them on, let the missiles hit, then turn and reengage them while they're staggered from the explosions.

Witches are more valuable than a dozen steelwings, especially ones that appear to be running some sort of stealth tricks.

[x] Stick to the plan- they’re just as likely to focus on you as not, and a missile can kill a witch, especially if she’s distracted.

“Keep an eye on them Kim.” You order, continuing to extend away from the fight and drag out other bandits. “We’re going to string them along, too.”

“We’re gonna do what?” She sounds confused- and not a little scared.

You don’t answer, instead breaking away from the witches- You can’t drop much lower, but between the maneuver and the Fenrir’s speed, they’re forced to turn to follow.

Still, they’re harder to keep off of you than the fighters were- occasional bursts of enhanced rifle fire that you can just barely evade. You know what they’re doing, of course- they’re trying to box you in. Fortunately for you, they’re nowhere near as fast as you are, you think, plugging in your burners.

At least, that’s what you tell yourself for the ten or so seconds it works.

“Morgan, there’s at least two of them keeping up with us.” Kim warns. It’s unnecessary- you can see them back there, weaving back and forth, both attempting to fix you in their gunsights. “This isn’t going to work!”

[] She’s right- these two are going to get you before the Lincoln's fighters are in place.
[] Like hell it isn’t- you only need to buy a few more seconds, you can do that!

If we weren't so green, I'd go for it. But we /are/ green, and these appear to be seasoned witches.

While I'd rather we take care of the pair of witches now, if we do end up sticking with the plan have Kim start using her shields that should buy us a bit of time.

Don’t we have off bore/over the shoulder capability by now in this timeline? If so, throw a missile or two at the witches and buy that few seconds we need.

The Wyrm topped out somewhere in the upper Mach 2's, iirc. The wolf is likely a little slower on account of being more of a multipurpose bird. Maybe the mid to low Mach 2's?

Wyvern and yeah. Technically the Fenrir is about the same speed, though you can go faster with the orbital booster on.

Have we got any idea if friendlies have been able to capitalize on the opening we've made?

'cause, like... we got them to show their hand. In absence of any other intel, I'd say NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE back to friendly turf makes a whole hell of a lot of sense.

I assume we're a little busy at the moment trying to not die. Though you're right, this is rather hot for someone so green.

Honestly, if we're at risk, we've already done what we can here. Even if they break off we pulled them out of formation, and we revealed the witches.

Are we painting these ones? The DDGs and CGs will ruin their day pretty fast if we get them firing away.

Guys, I owe you an apology.

This week ain't been the best, and that's all I'mma say. Been drinking a bit more than usual.

We'll run a completion of this thread this week, keep an eye on twitter. After this thread, we'll probably be looking at a hiatus for me to get shit straight. I'm sorry guys, I really am. Been saying that a lot lately, mean it every time.
