You return from your most recent mission quite satisfied. You turned over the imbecile who was trying to ruin the tournament, got paid and then you got some fancy new gear to boot.

Overall your life is pretty good right now.

Now that you have returned to Polaris Station what do you do? You have roughly two weeks until the next match.

Looking at your holobracer you notice that you haven't slept in a while, the mission kept you wired since you completed it. It was dangerous to not sleep for too long. You remember fighting for the first time and thinking you could keep going forever, and in a way you could have. Your augemented body allows you to function with an exceptionally small amount of sleep. 2 hours is comfortable, 1 is fine although it isn't always enough to avoid irritability or increased fatigue.

As you lay down in bed the fighting on that station reminds you that its been a while since you strapped yourself into some armor and got stuck in.

Since you became a soldier you've been in thousands of sorties either as a trooper or an officer. Always the frantic terror of combat lurks in some dark chmaber within your mind.

You remember when you first time you touched down on a planet. When you were baptized in flame and blood.

Those were dark times.

War changes you. Even if you're a stone cold killer, even if you have a spirit of iron and a thirst for blood that doesn't end, the spectre that it leaves behind never leaves.

That shit follows you into your grave, and probably into whatever life that comes after.

The sweat and feeling of dread in your stomach returns when you recall some of those distant memories.

Laman Primaris when you were only 20 years old. You were crammed inside a shitty tin can after the planetary bombardment finally opened up an LZ near one of the major cities.

Oh god that place burned when you got finished, you remember that there were ashen shades all over the place when you went to clean up. Blackened skeletons and bodies mummified by the heat.

>You are overtaken by memories of fire and blood.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQHUAJTZqF0

>You are PFC Rickert and you are sitting in the belly of Mean Bitch, a troop carrier entering the southern hemisphere of Laman Prime right outside the planetary capital.

>During this segment you will make choices that will effect Rickert in the present, but since he obviously survives to the present you use this segement to develop his character and flesh him out rather than actually fight

Within your armor you are locked into a standing position by your magnetic boots and the restraints used to keep you stationary during orbital insertion. The inside of the transport is cramped to say the least.

The dim metal hull is filled with members of your company and between the chatter on the comms and your CO grumbling to his NCOs and all the other regimental officers everyone's on edge.

The coalition forces on Laman are heavy and despite how worhtless this planet is in terms of materials and manpower, its position is of such high strategic importance a million of your kind are brought along to kick in the door to the coalition core worlds as quickly as possible.

All around you and in front of you are 100 of your unpainted, steely siblings. Wards of the state just like you and all drafted into being supersoldiers. Years of training and surgical augmentation since your were 12 has led to this moment.

You hate the fact that they have you in this fucking fire magnet of a carrier. It's fat thinly armored belly could get cracked open by light AA fire and kill the entire fucking company before you could even get within pissing distance of the LZ.

But then again you were the unblooded shiny toys. The vets would wait for you and your lot to exhaust the enemies vanguard before the vets drop from orbit with their entry capsules and raise hell.

Not that you gave a shit behind the rationale behind it, you didn't go through the hell of training to be a killing machine to die as some limpdicked gunnery crew got an easy shot off, because you were being lugged by some rust bucket piece of shit orbital transport.

What do you do while you are waiting to be dropped of at the LZ?

>Talk to your squardmates.
>Check your gear.
>Take your combat stims, fuck waiting to get off the shuttle.
>Ask your NCO what the fuck is taking so long.

Since no one else voted

>you check your gear

Might as well do another check. Would be a real shame if you survived the drop only to die because of a gear malfunction.

Checking through your power systems and ammo counters nothing comes up. The barrels, power sources, and internal working come back green and clear when you manually look at them.

Thrusters are articulated, full movement no sticking. HUD is operational, all your servos are working. Clenching and unclenching your hand, bending you knees slightly, rolling your armored shoulders.

Yup everything is working. If you get your shit pushed in you can't blame it on faulty equipment.

Looking around the vessel, everyone looks apprehensive, or they are checking their gear just like you. Can't blame them for being worried, battle is unpredictable and when you're a super soldier your training and equipment just means you get pushed into a bigger grinder.

"Listen up, LZ is 5 minutes out!" The company captain bellows over the comms.

"Exit your bracing unit and approach the back door! Squad Minsk you're first out!" You exit the brace and follow your Sargeant single file to the exit. Once the signal light above goes off it's a straight jump to the LZ.

Once you and your erstwhile companions are assembled before Sargeant Minsk he turns and starts chuckling.

"Alright who wants to go first? If you survive I'll buy you your first post battle drink."

What do you do?

>Go out first. You want to get stuck in.
>Don't volunteer. The first guy out always gets his head blown off.

Yeah you don't think you want to risk getting getting killed immediately. You distinctly remember in many of the combat vids you watched that the point man or the first to leave the transport ended up dead on the spot.

Sarge looks around but no one volunteers. "Eh. Least I don't have to buy you shits anything. Alright stack up behind me. 3 second interval between jumps, break off the first chance you get and hit the ground as soon as you can. Godspeed."

The moment he finishes the door opens and he's gone. Soon enough each member of your squad evacuates from the ship into the bitter whipping winds nearly 40,000 feet from the planet surface.

You shoot straight downward using your thrusters once you clear the ship. Adjusting slightly to move in a diagonal fashion you hurtle to the earth below like a stone. Luckily there is no significant AA fire save for a few odd bursts here and there. The bombardment must have turned out better than expected.

When you finally land, the concrete of the deserted highway you hit on your way down shatters and you end up making a crater probably as tall as you are.

In training one of the instructors had given you a tip that hitting the ground hard enough on a jump can instantly make a foxhole, so at least you have some cover now.

"Get out of there Volgunsen, we got to get to the assembly area! Fall in behind me and start moving!"

Leaping from the crater you follow your squad down the highway. Running or soaring through the air with your thrusters you see the devestation already wrought on the area. Huge swathes of land melted by orbital laser fire, or craters the size of buildings pox marking the entire landscape. When you reach an increasingly large knot of soldiers gathering behind an armored wall of some kind, the armored figure of your CO peaks slightly above the mass of armored troopers, pointing to a holo display behind him.

"This is our assignment. We are going to put pressure on this fortified barricade, and clear a way to cut power to one of the main shield units protecting the city. Once penetrated we are to move further in and secure the center of the city. The enemy is expecting us and theres a lot of grunts between the barricade and the city square, so watch out for massed weapons fire and heavy weapon teams in buildings."

The break down goes into a little further detail, but soon enough you take positions behind the wall.

"On my mark move as fast as you can to the barricade, if I get killed, Hodge has point! Move!"

The thunderous sound of hundreds of power armored figures taking off at once shakes the earth slightly.

Ironclad warriors careen through the air toward their target, jetfire illuminating them like small stars as you make your way toward the enemy barricade. The fortification is a sloped metal wall with ports for shooting and narrow slits for soldiers to line up at different levels and shoot. Soon after leaving your own cover a veritable wall of bullets and beams scream towards you. The hissing of projectiles constantly brushes by your ears and you can feel the pings of fire on your armor grow.

Allright with the wall in sight what do you do?

>Jump over the wall and start killing when you get to the other side.
>Throw some ordinance and burst through the wall, then get stuck in.

>Taking this because voting is slow

You rush toward the wal on foot, massive strides powered by both your thrusters and armor assisted legs. Just before you collide with the wall you jump and run along the wall until you reach the apex.

Over the lip of the barrier you see hundreds of soldiers lining the insides of the barricade. Rows of infantry pouring fire through the narrow slits, heavy weapon teams manning artillery platforms and minor AA batteries.

They have already noticed you and began to focus fire the moment you cleared the wall.

What do you do?

>Blow up the heavy weapons. The foot sloggers can wait
>Start butchering the infantry. The heavy weapons are focused on other targets and aren't of the anti infantry variety.

>prioritize the heavy weapons

The small frys can wait. Those guns are keeping your conventional forces from advancing, and taking the city will kill you if no infantry or heavy support comes soon.

Crushing a random grunt into paste beneath you, you rush one of the big artillery guns and lob a grenade into the barrel. The following explosion tears the crew into fine red mist and causes the nearby stockpile of ammo to go off.

Making your way through the emplacements and dugouts filled with ammo, you continue to lob grenades and fire conservatively to maximise damage. behind you the rows of guns melt into slag and the stockpiles of munitions scatter and go off at random. Soon enough the surrounding buildings collapse when stray shells pierce through them as guns topple and misfire.

The haze of smoke and debris fills the air and you only stop shooting when the din of fighting ends.

Ankle deep in blood and ash the charred, mutilated remains of the coalition soldiers are strewn all around you. Your brethren mercy kill the dieing survivors as a waypoint appears on your hud.

"Form up on me we're pushing toward the second line of defense, we can't wait for reinforcements just yet."

Ugh. Of course you can't wait for the heavy support or regular infantry that would be too easy.

Grumbling through the gore filled streets you assemble with your unit near the base of a collapsed skyscraper.

Two of your squadmates are missing. Fields and Nueman. Before you can ask Minsk responds.

"Fields took a stray shell to the chest and got pasted because he was throwing grenades from on high, Nueman stayed still and got crushed beneath a falling building."

No reassurance, no swearing, no insults, sarge just lays it out like a bad report during a meeting. You imagine he must have been through this thousands of times already, and couldn't care less.

Minsk growls and grabs you by the shoulder. "There's another heavy infantry unit approaching and we don't got time to get held up. You take Oda, Redding, and Schimdt and hold em off while we go up ahead."

"How many are there?" You ask.

"At least a company. You and half the company under Sargent Burns are gonna hold em until we clear the way."

"How many is half the company?"

Minsk growls again. "You don't get paid to ask questions maggot."

He leaves without answering your question. And since he declined answering you can porbably guess casualties were heavy and that you're probably working with at best 30 to 35 troopers.

Great.

You need to stall 100 power armored infantry what do you do and what orders do you give to your squadmates?

>Form on me we go in hard and fast.

Soldiers like Rickert were gonna get a pension based on how long they served and could reitre once the war was over. Wouldn't be much demand for soldiers once it was over. It's just you know...it didn't turn out that way. You'll learn more about that if you ever decide to go through the spaceport incident.

"Alright you lot follow me, we take them head on. No point wasting time waiting for them."

With your squadmates in tow you bound over the ruined buildings until you see the 100 strong force.

"There they are open fire!" Focusing your considerable arsenal on individuals targets you clip off the upper body of one of the armored soldiers using you laser blaster, and force the thicket of armored infatry to scatter using a rocket barrage.

"Go in for melee but stay near me!"

Shoulder checking one of the coalition troopers Kazuo dop down on the surprised soldier and wedges his blade down into the neck join of the suit.

A second trooper charges at you but a sharp burst from your laser melts his head. The dead body sams into a small house caving it in.

"Hide in the dust from that house!" The other follow your lead but Redding is fighting above taking on two enemy soldier at once.

"Get down here Redding!"

"Now way I'm too much fun! Come on I'll take all of you!" Redding sounds like he's taken his combat stims, maybe all of them because you can hear gurgling and salivation from his comm.

Stupid bastard is in a frenzy now.

Waiting in the smoke and taking potshots while the enemy can't see you the pressure is off.

"Keep Going! I'm going to save Redding!"

Kazuo grabs your arm with one of his oversized metal hands before you can turn to leave.

"Leave him! If he wants to die so bad then let him!"

You pry the giant mitt from your arm and point toward the enemy.

"You move on ahead and flank, Redding is no good to us dead! That's an order!"

Before Kazuo or Schmidt can protest you're already soaring through the air. Weaving between salvos of rockets and sotrms of bullets. Your armor continues to accumualte damage from stray shots, dents and singed craters begin to marr your armor.

When you finally reach Redding he's lost an arm and he's being ganged up by three coalition troopers.

Wordlessly you swing your axe straight through the head of the trooper closest to you. The second turns to take a charged laser blast to the face, and the final turns to face you with Redding beneath him on the ground. His lack of diligence rewards him by getting his head pinched off by Reddings oversized caestus.

"I'm not feeling too good." Gurgling and heavy breathing accompanies everyword.

"Do you have any stabilizers you can take?" Redding nods.

"Take all of them, your stims are overtaxing your heart and you're bleeding out."

Redding nods before collapsing on the ground.

"Fucking idiot."

You throw a tracking beacon on Redding before shoving under some debris. He better hope nothing blows up above him. You doubt someone will find him but that debris won't save him from a stray artillery shell.

You rush off to rejoin your squadmates barking on your comms as you go.

"Status Report! How are we holding!"

"We could use some help here, the bastards are falling back but we've taken heavy casualties!"

Descending from above you slam down onto a lone trooper burrying the barrel into the neck joint before boiling the poor fuck in his armor. Sparks and super heated body fluids spraying from the opening in the armor.

Stained with boiling blood molten metal, you join you comrades as they push the colation forces away.

Unleashing your rockets and beam weapons into the thinning tide of coalition forces until you are upon them.

Grabbing one of the troopers by the arm you twist it at the elbow before hacking it off. The bleeding soldier's life is ended when a solid slug cracks his helmet open. Kazuo and Schmidt follow close behind using you as a shield as they finish off the soldiers you maim or grapple.

Soon enough there are no enemeis left and you get a call from your CO.

"Regroup at the square and rearm! Pods are dropping with supplies and auto repair platforms! We got a clear the rest of this city before sun down!"

Turning to your remaining allies you notice that about 9 excluding you or Redding are left.

On your way to the city center you notice more of your brethren in various states of death or dieing. Little grains of sand among the sea of dead coalition soldiers and civlians killed either by the bombardment or by your comrades.

"Yes, we did do this. I am not going to give you any bullshit about honour or glory. We both know why we did it - it was us or them. We got dropped on this god forsaken rock because there is no path but forward and they are here because they have no choice but to defeat us or die. We're all in this meatgrinder until the last gun is fired gentlemen no doubt about it."

The dead silence that follows as you move toward the city center is only broken by the ocassional grumble or cough.

"War does not decide who is right. It decides who is left."

Kaz once again being philosophical ladie and gentlemen.

"Shut the fuck up Kaz." Your entire unit drones as one.

"Well fuck you all too. Simpletons." Well despite losing probably most everyone you know in the first several hours of combat at least their is one moment of levity in this shitty situation.

Once you touchdown at the city center you plop down into a reapir station and get the armor plating on your suit replaced along with a replacement for the heatsinks on your power core.

Looking out from the pod thousands of power armored warriors buzz around while the first conventional troops start building fortifications and tanks dig in with the ruined buildings as cover.

"Attention all heavy infantry, you get to have a special honor. Since you've fought so well you get to take the city without the veterans getting all the glory. The vets are going elsewhere on world."

"We getting paid extra for this?" You growl over the comms.

"Welcome to big business son. When you do a good job, you get no raise and more work. Life is shit so get used to the smell and taste."

The servos in your armored fists groan in pain from the pressure of clenching your fists.

"Hey what do we do man?" Schmidt looks over at you from his repair pod.

"You listen to me maggot." Minsk finally drags his old ass to greet you with waht remains of your squad. Tyson and sherman follow him so at least no one else died.

"How did the push go?"

Minsk belches from within his armor.

"Shit. Half the group got wiped, and I can fucking see what happended to you. What happened to Reddings?"

"He took all his stims at once and got gang banged. Had to save his ass but he lost an arm and had take all his stablizers or bleed out. Hid him under some rubble to make sure no one shot him while we wrap up this siege."

Minsk actually sounds genuinly annoyed for a second. "Fucking drug addled shithead. Gonna hafta whip him for that one."

Misnk gestures to follow.

"Come on maggots, fall in we got shit to do."

Rising out of the pod fully repaired you follow the sargeant to a loose column of power armored infantry.

"Allright I need volunteers for a mission. Someones gotta run across the ruined outskirts and take out the artillery the enemy is moving towards us. Things will get real fucking greasy if they can dig in and start firing. Anyone who survives gets some new shit and a big bonus to their pension."

You raise your hand. Soon a blip on your hud directs you with some others toward the eastern side of the city. You'll need to go all the way around to have a chance of flanking the artillery.

Before you're out of small com range Schmidt asks you a question.

"Can I have your shit after you die?"

"Shut the fuck up Schmidt. Just for that I'm beating your ass when I get back."

Schmidt chuckles darkly.

"I sure hope so man."

Yeah. You hope.

Moving through the outskirts of the city you get a better look at the destruction wrought on the city. All of its big buildings have been knocked over, the shield pylons have melted. The whole place is just one big broken charnel house. Not a single civie or animal in sight.

You hope that something comes out of this battle. You don't even care if it's bad. Just something to at least register that this place got wasted.

Once you get closer to the designated target area you start encountering stragglers from the city defender falling back, and new blood rolling in from outside.

Once you've gotten close enough it becomes clear that you've made a mistake. There's columns of tanks numbering in the hundreds if not thousands. A wave of infantry that stretches to the horizon. Gunships and heavy aerospace fighters zipping through the air, and the giant guns that look like they could be buildings sluggishly rolling toward the city.

Dear god what the fuck did command think that you and maybe a couple hundred heavy infantry could do?

What do you do?
>Go after the tanks. They will be slower targets and even if they can one shot you, you have a better chance at dodging.

>Go through the infantry. Wading through so many will be like running though rain made of bullets, but your armor can hold out for a while.

>Try to ride on and stel one of the flyers

Found our target.
Think its possible to abandon our armor with a beacon to our guys with a note? I got this idea to dress up as a shell shocked civilian (a heavily augmented one at that) or an infantry grunt (either one from pillaging the clothes or armor of the dead.
See my idea is to wander past delirious like, try to get close and sabotage the thing.
>>

They're shooting retreating soldier like its WW2 all over again. The commissars are out in force today. Also the chance that they buy the shellshocked civilian disguise is pretty low.

At least with the tanks you have a chance of dodging the projectiles.

Best to keep a low profile and try to stay low to the ground. Running along the ashen plain you weave and use your thrusters to prevent any of the tanks from drawing a bead on you.

Despite your efforts they still shoot. Guns that could split you apart even in your armor go off. The sounds of their firing are enough to create empty pockets where not air is present. Little vacuums where the hellish noise of battle is silenced right before it comes back to torment you. You decide that its better to just shut off your audio systems and go ahead deaf. That may kill you but it's not like you could hear anything beyond the mess of noise all around anyways.

You don't bother attacking the tanks. Ther're too big and too armored to kill quickly and they're not your target to begin with.

Although you do rush between the tanks and guide their turrets. One of the tanks shooting at you ends up hitting one of the others, the shell must have hit an internal magazine because that tank blew up and sent it's turret crashing into another tank.

The closer you get to the artillery, more tanks start firing at you and more infantry start popping up as well. The volume of fire being launched at you is too great to dodge and small arms fire starts hammering you suit from all sides.

Your not going to survive long getting pelted like this. Eventually your armor will be breached by the torrent of gun and laser fire. Leaping into the air you soar and cut your thrusters.

Bodyslamming into one of the mobile guns you crawl until hatch is found.

Punching a hole you fall down to the floor of the cabin unarmored crew all around shocked that you made it inside.

what do you do?
>kill the crew and hijack the gun.
>Kill the crew and overload the small reactor on board.

>blow the gun and move on

Tearing the crew apart was easy. The wet tearing sound pulling their limbs off created makes you want to break down and cry.

The whole time they scream and try to evade. Begging for mercy. You pull them apart like a cruel child does a captued spider.

Once the bloody work is done you start breaking instruments on the consoles and head to the compartment in the back where they can work on the engine. The rumbling engine is connected to an armored block behind it. The reactor. You ounch soem holes in it using your laser and run like hell.

Jumping out of the hole you made, the explosion heats your armor up and you're sure a big piece of shrapnel just lodged itself in your back. You felt something nearly break your spine a second ago.

No matter there are other mobile guns to kill and at the very least the explosion you made captured some oter guns in the blast radius.

You repeat you actions with each gun. Even with the gunships and fighters strafing you. Even with the waves of tanks and troops turning back to stop you. You keep moving. Your attacks become mechanical. Slaughter the crew punch a hole in the reactor, and escape the blast.

Soon you don't see any more guns. Just the angry mass of soldiers and tanks trying to mince you with gunfire.

The sun is hanging low. Night is coming. You don't see any of your comrades. You suspect that you may be the only survivor.

Huh. Now that the job is done you realize that you hadn't thought up an escape plan.

No point and waiting to die. You've actually completed your objective even when eveyone else died so that's got to count for something.

You order your suit to start injecting your body with your combat stims. Molten metal courses through your veins and the fuzzyness from exhaustion in your head is replaced with a cold lightning of awareness.

The only thing in your way is a large army.

Shit.

Charginf across the battlefield into the masses of infantry you plow through the coalition line like an angry bull. Crushing unluckly troops beneath your massive metal feet. Swipping those in the way with your axe hacking them to bits with sweeping slashes. Keeping this low prevents the infantry from shooting you on the flat plain, but you still need to use your thrusters to avoid getting turned into paste by tank fire.

Shells the size of grown men wizz by slaughtering dozens of coalition grunts in lrge sprays of blood and gore. At this point your helmets eyeholes are slick with blood and you're pretty sure your bright red from all the human fluids drenching you.

Coming up on a tank you vault over the side and slide over the turret. Some officer type was unlucky enough to have been peeking over the hatch at the time. Your weight and speed took off his upper body and left his pulped body stuck to you.

Ugh you'll need one hell of a hose to get this shit off.

Each passing moment brings you closer to the city limits, the taletell sign of your comrades counterfire rings across the battle field.

"Hey when I come in, try not to shoot me!" The fuzzy responses over your comms don't make much sens but the frantic yelling makes you worried if they will care enough to watch for you will they're emptying there guns into the mass of coalition forces.

You are proven correct when a some of the tanks on your side start firing at you.

They miss but one takes the missile pod on your shoulder from just grazing you.

"Calm the fuck down I'm friendly, I'm friendly!" Your frantic plea doesn't go over. The hail of ordinance and small arms fire remains.

It's only when you jump over a collapsed building and into a mas of heavy infantry that your thruster fail and you roll across the ground before slamming into a wall.

"Don't shoot, for fuck's sake don't shoot!"
You limpy raise your arms, the stim is wearing off.

"Holy shit man is that you!" The sound of Schmidt clambering over to you is only highlighted by some grumbling over the comms.

"Ah hell one came back. We didn't have the money to put in the pension bonus. Command is gonna be pissed."

You black out before you can start strangling anyone.

>broke back nobles
House Arnheimer didn't pay partially because they were broke from the war (although they were such misers they never willlingly gave any kind of raises or pension bonuses anyways) and because it would have been porblematic to pay some of their troops after the war for political reasons.

To be honest him being gay wouldn't affect much if anything at all.

His sexual orientation isn't essential or even relevant to his character and to be honest I would avoid romance if possible. I'm not an especially good writer and I can't imagine making a romantic subplot that wouldn't be trite, forced or uninteresting.

I mean if you want Rickert to shack up with someone that's fine but it won't be at the forefront of the quest although that's probably a given considering this isn't a dating quest or what have you.

Weeks before when you visited the lower sections of the station with Neil you noticed that there was an ad for an engineering fair of sorts.

Mechanics, engineers, industrial staff, and grease monkeys all hobknobbing around trading advice, inventions, and secrets.

You may be an artisan in all but name, but there's no such thing as an perfection when it comes to crafts. There are always new techniques, tweaks, and fancy inventions to be found.

Considering that the upcoming gap between rounds is ever approaching, picking the brains of the best craftsmen and craftswomen in the sector will go a long way of giving you an edge in the later parts of the tournament.

Once your shuttle arrives at the lower level, and your trek to the workshop is completed, you are greeted by a a vast array of self contained work spaces.

Inside each metallic structure are various machine tool and construction apparatus. Multi segemented arms and 3-d fabrication chambers, atomic furnaces, and self contained manufacturing units. People from hundreds of planets shuffling in and out of the workshops, trading plans and talking shop.

There are so many different stations it's hard to decide what to do first.

what do you visit first?

>The material modification seminar (concerns itself with durability and structural integrity, can be used to increase damage resistance and health on Algol)

>Mega particle physics and mechanical forces lecture (concerns itself with upgrading weapon damage and giving additional traits for Algol )

The quaint circular room holding the lecture had a arge holotable in the center. There were at least 4 senior faculty from the Polaris techincal University located on station as well as 4 guest speakers from other planets. You even notice that one of the prfoessors was from the same planet Neil was.

The symposium lasts for six hours with each expert presenting new findings, including their own work on the nature of mechanical forces and how new designs greatly increased the ability for motors and machines to exert force.

The section dedicated to forms of charged particles that could be used as weapons or for new forms of communication and sub atomic oberservation were also discussed.

The entire time you dutifully copy notes and draw models from the exmaples provided on the holo table.

By the time you return to your fortress you spend several days dissecting the new information.

The directory should be able to help. You just need to look for the areas that service pilots specifically.

When you see a place called the dueling arena you groan. Alright that was more straight forward than you thought it would be.

By the time you arrive at the arena you realize that it is fact not an arena. The building is a three story manse of somekind. A bright freshly white painted exterior and a gate guarded by several men in colored tunics. From the multiple colors they must belong to different houses.

Approaching the gate the guards block your path.

"Halt! This place is reserved for those competing in the tournament! If you're here to gawk you must do so else where sir!"

"I am a pilot you imbecile, now out of my way."

The guard does not move, his comrades begin to form a human barrier to the manse.

"I highly doubt that sir, you're not the first to make that claim and I'm sure you won't be the last, now move along."

The pulse of the man's life's blood feels rather dull in your grip. You had grasped the man by his throat reflexively.

"Listen here you little pissant, I'm Rickert Volgunsen and if wish to keep you legs and arms pointing the right way you're going to let me in. And to the rest of you if you wish to bar my path you lot can expect to get the same treatment I gave the men on Menthus secundus."

The all visibly pale at that remark. Not surprising because at Menthus you were using incindiery shells and ordinance during most of the campaign. Melting men inside their own skin and armor. Liquid flesh and the like dribbling from the breaches, all in all quite nasty.

"Sir, Rickert Volgunsen is already present in the building. he's been coming here for some time."

You release the man. You remain completely still for a time.

"Is that so." There is no inflection or tone to your voice. It's quite mechanical.

"Then I must mee thim then." You produce you key card containing you pilot information.

"Ah yes you can come in....." You raise your hand.

"Read it. Do not merely give me entrance. Read it."

The card is read and your portrait appears along with Algol.

"Oh dear. Well it would appear we have made a mistake. We apologize sir. We're not station security so we just assumed that when he produced the card that..."

You raise your hand again.

"No need. I shall handle this. Please let me through." The wall of men parts.

As you approach the front door, you hear the man behind you whispering and exchaning money.

"Thought that guy was too short to be the real thing."

"That guy inside is gonna die isn't he?"

"I hope so, he's been a complete cunt everytime he's shown up."

Within the manse you continue through from the entrance down a straight hallway. The floor is tiled with exotic alien stone that is a soft green almost emerald color with shiny crystal impurities.

Along the walls are works of art and a handful of scale titan models. Each is near as large as you, depicting the titans of previous champion fighters who made it to the final round of the tournament.

Further down the hallway you begin to hear the vaccuous chatter of the upper class.

The room at the end of the hallway, is decadently furnished with gilded baroque chairs, tapestries and rugs so thick you could probably sleep on them comfortably.

The atmosphere makes you want to vomit in disgust.

In the cente rof the room is a raised circular platform, with two painted squared several feet from the center.

That must where two nobles formally challenge each other. Not unreasonable, they would need to leave the station to actually fight in their titans, the terms and conditions could be made here however.

Peering through the crowd you can't make out anyone you know. None of the contenders seem to be present, and the Harper siblings aren't present either.

You'll need to actively search for your impersonator.

what do you do?

>Approach one of the other pilots and ask where "Rickert" is.
>Ask one of the wait staff where "Rickert" is.
>Go up to the challenge platform then call the imposter out.

This decision is a matter of how reserved and private you want to make this encounter (think carefully is all I'm gonna say).

>asking one of the wait staff

retreating to a side hallway, you scan around for a footman or other waitstaff. Soon enough one of the poshy manservants appears and you confront him.

"Sir may I have a moment of your time?"

The waiter jumps slightly when he notices you. Looming over him menacingly.

"Um..uh.. yes sir what can I do for you today." He wheezes out, posture reduced and knees shaking slightly.

"Where is Rickert Volgunsen right now? Also do not merely tell me point him out."

The waiter leads you back into the main room and points out a figure surrounded by a small crowd. You can vaguely see a hairline peaking from behind the wall of people. Smug bastard must be talking himself up.

You could wait for the imposter to break off and you could approach him in private. Or you could simply enter the knot of pilots and approach directly.

This little shit has been enountered before. He was far from being a good pilot, and so he tried his hand at being a general.

So many died because he couldn't take a hint and listen to his advisors. So much wasted effort because he relaid the wrong god damned orders.

That smug apple cheeked bastard had taken the credit for the commando raid on the enemy dreadnought that then careened into the enemy army and turned the campaign on Stultz into a success.

HE took credit for the plan.

The sound of your hand clapping Sigurd on the back echoes through the room.

You feel his collar bone creak beneath your grip when you grasp his shoulder.

"Oh wow! Are you THE Rickert Volgunsen! I've been looking all over for you! You *MUST* give me the chance for a duel."

The deep rumble of your voice is considerably more gravelly. Your posture is ramrod straight and your face is locked into a vicious smile.

Sigurd's face looks petulant for a moment until he recognizes you.

You have to hold him in roder to prevent his escape.

"Hey now. Mr. Volgunsen I saw your fight with that Wallers guy and I have to say that was some fancy dodging you did, and that fist fight with the kaiju was top stuff. I gotta ask for a duel especially since you've become so popular. I mean with everything you've collected one little duel would be a good warm up for the coming match.

Sigurd tries to keep up his facade. Straightening his back and holding the smug smile he had on before.

You have him in a bind now, if he says no he will lose face in front of his peers from bragging about YOUR victories, and being exposed. If he says yes chances are you'll rip him and his titan apart.

"Uh... Yeah I'd be glad too, but umm... I was gonna meet someone today. You see I have a date of sorts so..."

Your grip intensifies and the sound of his bones creaking is audible to the crowd. Your barely contained rage escapes somewhat.

"We have a score to settle whelp. You have two choices, accept my challenge for insulting my honor or reject and forfeit you life. If you want to leave with your head on your shoulders you're going to agree wto fight me. So get on that fucking platform and let's talk terms."

You release Sigurd. He trembles before hurriedly scanning all around. The crowd watches almost hypnotized unblinking and jaws dropped. A death threat like this means that there's some kind of blood feud.

You lock eyes with Sigurd until he shuffles to the platform with you.

That's true, but the same could be said if he dies. The Runt is pretending to be Rickert so I figured that if we can get him to agree -regardless of the fact hes pretending to be us- we'll still get his shit. I think. It's weird.

We're pretty much setting the ground rules for this fight. do we want to fight with only melee. do we want to fight with only guns. all equipment. no equipment. probably almost anything we set would be legal so long as both duelists agree.
>>
>>2525978
In the tournament you get one piece of gear from your opponent. The rules of courtesy and tournament law usually prevents you from killling an opponent who yields.

With duels you put up your gear or money or both and try to get your opponent to put up a roughly equivalent wager in cash or gear.

Also you need to clarify what kind of duel this is an if there are any specific stipulations (weapon specific, melee or shooting only, no gear at all).

Fight to first blood (for a given definition of blood for giant robots)

Fight to the finish (where one opponent is either unable to battle or yields)

Fight to the death (self explanatory although this usually mean winner takes all but not always)

"Sadly my collection isn't as expansive as your own, so make things fair I suggest we fight with no weapons and equipment on our titans.
The winner takes all, including the losers life."

Sigurd for a moment looks unsure, but he looked considerate. He must be counting on your inexperience to overcome you, or that the your threat will be reduced without any weapons or equipment. But then again he may just be blinded by greed. Getting all of the gear you have would actually be a worthy addition for his family.

"I accept these terms. Mr...." Sigurd is grinning. He thinks he's back in control.

You smile.

"Sigurd, Sigurd Arnheimer"

Your opponent grits his teeth, but remains silent although the shit eating grin he had is gone now.

"Very well. When will we begin?" Sigurd chokes out.

"Immediately at the designated world."

You step down from the platform and swiftly exit, avoiding the crowd and making your way to your shuttle.

Deep within you are pleased. A small revenge no matter how small is still revenge. One step closer. One step closer.

>Time passes and you move your fortress into position over the appointed planet.

The moment you returned home you alerted the station authority to your plans.

The station commander accepted the legitimacy of your duel. The death warrants are signed. Also Sigurd's little stunt is going on record, the tournament authorities and the imperial magistrate don't like it when nobles stir the pot on their turf.

You slam into the planet in your customary fashion, the sea of ash and smoke following Algol dutifully, wrapping around his terrible frame like a cloak.

From the opposite side of the planet Sigurd appears, his titan moving toward you slowly and purposfully.

A voice echoes through your chamber.

"Let it be known. This is a sanctioned deathmatch. The emperor has sealed this accord and it may only be payed in blood. Pilot Volgunsen claims that he has been dishonored by Pilot Arnheimer by his theft of identity and seizure of battle honors before peerage. Let it be known and let it be settled according to imperial justice."

The fight begins, Algol's fearsome visage sparks with lightning, claws glowing balefully.

Across from you Sigurd take up a stance with Tusk. The titan is a bone white machine, with thick sturdy limbs. Its head is a cyclops head complete with tusks. The feet are elepahntine, rounded with no toes. The yellow eye brightens and approaches.

Just so you know Sigurd isn't even in the tournament here at polaris. Rickert checked when he first signed up to see if he'd get lucky and be able to get some payback.

Sigurd heard about Rickert's sucess and remembered who he was, so he decided to play a trick and try to ruin his reputation while also benefitting by acting like a tought guy. Sigurd was womanizing with female noblewomen and pilots as well as bragging incessantly, on top of that he was also try to make money by merchandising Algol and trying to make bets in your name.

This factoring in the servo motors (you have 2d20+4 not 2d10+4)

You are upon Sigurd before he can even put up his guard.

Your lightning fast right hand nearly turns Tusk's head all the around. The sound of servos and mechanisms grinding in pain.

Before Tusk can be sent flying you clasp one of Algol's clawed mitts on Tusk's shoulder and the other on tusk's forearm.

The bone colored titan reels back and loses balance but remains in place soley because you hold on.

"You never should have come here Sigurd. You would have lived longer."

>KALI MA! KALI MA!

You give Sigurd enough time to stand up before plunging your fist into the massive dent in Tusk's torso.

The sound of crunching metal is is followed by massive electrical discharge and superheated fluids that glow neon.

No point in wasting your breath gloating, Sigurd has always been a loser and this fight was such a dissapointment that even insulting or tormenting him verbally wouldn't even be fun.

You pull the cockpit chamber out, and looking upon it you have an idea.

Carefully digging one of Algol's fingers into the side you open up the top of the chamber. Until a little insignificant figure pop out and repels down onto Algol's hand.

It takes some time but Sigurd is stuck, and so you don your warsuit the very same you wore when you drafted YOUR plan to crash the dreadnought those years ago.

Descending upon Sigurd in his light evo suit you beat him. Severely.

Each bone shattering punch and stomp sends splinters of bone flying. You grab each limb and tear them off, spraying blood over your suit. You don't stomp until nothing remains but viscera.

Ah. Delicious.

Now you may return and bask in your revenge. This loss will sting upon house Arnheimer greatly even if it the bungler who died. Exposing him as a fraud who impersonated someone else to ride his coattails will disgrace the main family greatly.

>end of session I'll start again saturday the 12 of may at 12pm EST

Since these sessiosn tend to last several days at a time I'll do 1 session every other week.

I have been considering doing a second quest on the off week. A quest that focuses on you're PC being a singular adventurer looking to accomplsih an ambition being let loose in a sandbox fantasy world, where the anons just explore and build a party and accomplish an ambition of some kind, like becoming a ruler or a the greatest blacksmith or something.
>>
>>2526720
I'd be down for a blacksmithing quest, not sure if an adventure sandbox would gain that much traction considering how many of those there are.
>>
>>2526720
I mean i would quest that
>>
>>2526720
A second quest? I'd be down for that. Maybe a blacksmith orc looking to carve his name in history. Don't know it's got to be something both the QM and players will like.
>>
>>2526726
Hmmm. The only quests that I really follow, are warlord quest (hopefully it isn't dead), Templar quest (even if the updates are one night only and somewhat short), elf slave quest (because it's got some decent writing and feels), and male gunpowder fantasy (because it does the yankee in king arthur's court idea pretty well and also has decent writing).

Those aren't sand boxes to me because they have a fairly strong plot hook that keeps the plot moving at a brisk pace except the male gunpowder and warlord quests. And even then both male gunpwder and warlord focus have their PC involved with either a home base and staring faction (warlord) or a heavily established storyline with few avenues for progession due to the limitations of the setting and quest concept (gunpowdet).

Now that is my impression on those quests on a conceptual level.

Also not to degrade or insult them, I enjoy all of them a good deal, and they are pretty good quests, especially in comparison to the joke quests that pop up from time to time that get less than 50 replies before just clogging the the front page.

Are their any quests you anons are lurking or participating in that is also a sandbox?

The PC has built a party and is the plot has been focusing on the conflict between frontier humans and elves, and a group of demi humans with animal features (more catgirl then furry) which involves the quests waifu a ranger girl who kust got her wolf ears and learns about the demi human community, also an adorable wizard child who is best daughteru

>elf slave
An amateur unliscensed alchemist ina gritty high fantasy setting tries to make ends meet buys a slave (a horribly abused and tormented elf girl) to do his house work while he gets involved with possible organized crime and the trouble of being an orphan with little formal schooling in a frontier town while having lots of heart warming moments and quest posts about as quality as you can get on this mogolian cave drawing board.

>male gunpowder fantasy
a modern engineer gets reincarnated (twice because he died once) into the world of A song of ice and fire and uses his real world knowledge of science and engineering to make gunpowder weapons and later a advanced 16-18th century ship, as well as dress up like a commissar and abuse the shit out of knowing historical events in the plot of the books. (its the "A Conneticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" but in westeros and basically follows the same idea, a modern engineer gets thrown into primitive setting and uses technology to make profit and engage in shits and giggles)
