You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and by this point you have spent several hours in the Schattenbereich. The battle for Karakura town must be in full swing already, but there's nothing you can do about that now. Instead you'll have to leave it to your comrades, subordinates, and children, and focus yourself on your current mission: rescue Ishida Kanae and Kurosaki Masaki, as well as the fools who charged off to try and rescue them before you.

Unfortunately, the teenage drama was worse than you could have anticipated.

Tatsuki, Chad, and Ishida are all awake now, but the mood is decidedly less than celebratory. That's because Ichigo had to make the decision, not incorrect in your judgment, to have Rukia and Renji restored to fighting condition rather than his human friends. While you can certainly understand that Ichigo knows that the two shinigami officers are here partly due to their duties, and so he has no right to judge their presence, his friends who chose to follow him here didn't appreciate being sidelined. It's a disagreement where Ichigo doesn't want people to get hurt trying to help him, while the others don't want Ichigo to be hurt fighting on his own.

It's been awkward since you finally managed to get the team moving again, but at least if you just keep them focused on moving forward they might not shout at each other again.

At least that was the plan, until you're forced to stop short. “I sense something coming.”

Yoruichi stops as well, seeming to sense the same thing you did. “It's familiar... ah, so he's finally gotten tired of waiting?”

“He?” you repeat.

“Grimmjow Jaggerjaques,” Yoruichi informs you, motioning for you and the others to take a few steps away from her. “He's coming to fight me personally.”

“And the other one?” you ask. “It feels like a quincy.”

“I don't know that one,” Yoruichi admits with a frown. “But I doubt Grimmjow is the type to bring backup... if he can't kill me on his own he's the type who'd rather die swinging at me.”

“Then I guess we'll see what happens next,” you sigh, drawing Tenkotsuki from her sheath.

A few seconds later a crash signals Grimmjow's dramatic entry, his zanpakuto clashing with Yoruichi's twin blades. As she's in the process of driving her knee into the arrancar's ribs, the second fighter catches up in an instant.

Two projectiles lance out at short range even as your blade is about to fall on the interloper, so fast that neither you nor Yoruichi is able to stop what you're doing and evade. The projectile slams into your chest with enough force to stop you in your tracks, and just as quickly the newcomer has moved out of the way.

“I though I told you to let me fight her myself,” Grimmjow growls angrily at his 'partner', a fat man floating in what looks like a shallow basket. “Fuck off already.”

“And I keep telling you that you're far too greedy,” the floating fat man replies. “Now, if you two Captains would be so kind... kill the humans.”

For a moment you begin to wonder what the hell he's up to, until you notice that Yoruichi is actually moving to do so... the killing intent is clear from her reiatsu.

“Rikujōkōrō.”

Your bakudō halts your wife in place almost instantly, and with an irritated growl she starts to strain against the spell. So instead of letting whatever this is continue, you place a different spell on her.

Hakufuku.

Yoruichi's gaze grows unfocused, and her muscles relax. Soon you're able to remove the bakudō, catching the unconscious woman as she falls forward into your arms. You scoop her up and carry her several meters to one side, getting her out of the road as everyone else present watches in varied states of confusion and concern.

“Riku, what...” Ichigo begins, only for you to interrupt.

“Keep moving.”

“Stop them...” the floating fat man orders you, only for you to interrupt again.

“I refuse.”

“But we...” Rukia begins as you gently set your wife down, seeing to it that she's in as comfortable a position as you can offer her.

This is a direct order!” you bellow, turning away from Yoruichi and letting loose a wave of reiatsu that rattles the stone tiles beneath your feet. “Keep moving and don't look back.

She knows better than to argue, and practically drags the rest of the group by their ears to get away from you as quickly as possible. She knows that when you get this angry, someone inevitably dies.

“That Captain... has she no love in her heart?” the floating fat man wonders aloud as you turn your glare towards him. “Impossible!”

“No,” you correct him. “My emotions are compartmentalized, between three fragments of my soul. That is all.”

“Three fragments of your soul?” Grimmjow repeats, staring at you in a complete lack of comprehension. “That's weird.”

“Almost as weird as what's gonna happen next,” you counter, staring him straight in the eyes. “I didn't send the others away for their safety. I sent them away because I didn't want them to see this.”

There's a little concern there. Good.

You feel... rage.

And not just something that you owe to Rosa's presence either, but your own, genuine hatred towards the thing that dared to attack your wife's mind... for it's obvious that's what he must have done. And with how he was going on about love earlier... the sight of him disgusts you. The knowledge that he exists outrages you.

“Arrancar,” you grunt. “Stay where you are while I murder the floating fat man. If you lay so much as a finger on my wife that finger is all they'll ever find of you.”

Whatever Grimmjow might have been trying to say, it simply dies in his throat under the weight of your glare. Instead he simply nods, and takes a few steps back.

You hold your right hand out at your side. “Raze, Kobara no Tachi.”

The blade at your hip suddenly re-forms in your hand, as if its reishi has been simply called into your hand in response to your murderous desires.

“When I kill you,” you ask, turning your gaze onto your victim. “Will whatever you did die with you?”

“As if it would be so simple,” the floating fat man replies. Either he refuses to believe that you can kill him, or he's saying that whatever he did to your wife's mind will persist even after his death?

That's a concern. Focusing on your reiatsu sensing ability confirms that Yoruichi's reiatsu has been ever so subtly altered, as if there's some sort of lingering effect there.

But right now you don't feel any particular need to kill him. Hurting him will suffice.

Your blade slashes cleanly through his wrist as he tries to draw a quincy bow from his mouth, far too slow to keep pace with your rage-fueled speed. Before he can even scream your hand grabs him over the mouth, thumbs and fingertips digging little bloody gouges into his cheeks.

The eyes behind his darkened glasses betray neither pain nor remorse, but glare defiantly back at you.

“Then. Fix. It.”

Each word is delivered dripping in venom, its own implicit threat. The fat man refuses to comply... and so you slice off more of his arm just below the elbow.

“I can do this all day.”

The fat man strains against your hand for a moment, gesturing wildly at Yoruichi. You release your grasp on his mouth and instead grab him by the collar of his white shirt.

“There,” he lies. “I've done what you asked, now release me.”

Instead you slam your forehead into his face, shattering his tinted glasses into his eyes in a howl of pain.

STOP. LYING.” you command as the man writhes in pain. “I'll be able to tell when you've undone whatever it is you did to my wife. Do as I say and I will release you.”

“You... you love that woman?” the floating fat man realizes too late.

“More than life itself,” you hiss. “I owe her that life anyway.”

“Then why won't you feel love towards me!?” the man demands. “How is it that a being that can feel such devotion can simply ignore my power?”

“Maybe it's you who can't feel love,” you counter. “Your power... it can make people do anything for you?”

“Have you ever felt that way yourself?” you press, tightening your grasp around his collar. “Have you ever been willing to lay down your very life for someone you love? Have you ever once, in your entire life, put someone else's well being before your own?”

“If it's infatuation you can induce, you shouldn't even have bothered with me,” you declare spitefully. “That's not something I can feel.”

“That's absurd!” the quincy shouts at you.

“Funny thing,” you muse. “I get that a lot from people I kill.”

“Now, back to the subject of my wife. Undo what you've done, and I'll release you.”

This time, you can sense that Yoruichi's reiatsu returns to normal... it seems that whatever he did he's finally undone.

“Then I shall fulfill my promise,” you growl, sheathing Kobara no Tachi. But just after you do so, you draw Tenkotsuki from your hip and stab deep into the quincy's chest.

He looks shocked.

“I release you,” you tell him, letting his body fall off your blade to the ground. His legs are too weak to support his substantial weight, and he rolls over as the wound slowly seals itself with the last of his waning spiritual power. “The oblivion of soul suicide is too good for you, so I release you from your pitiful existence back into the flow of mortal souls, and I curse you to be born a thousand times again.”

“When you've suffered a thousand lives worth of torment and misery, then you will have my forgiveness for what you've done.”

“What... what have you done!?” the fat man wheezes from the ground.

“Your powers are gone,” you reply stoically, “and the woman I love is free from your influence. What you do with the rest of this life is no longer my concern.”

“Get out of my sight.”

Trailing a little dribble of blood, the still-unnamed fat man starts to crawl away.

Grimmjow stares at you, still somewhat taken aback at your concept of 'punishment'... your belief that consigning such a wretched soul to a thousand lifetimes of suffering was a harsher punishment than erasing it entirely.

He tries to speak, but you interrupt. “No.”

Instead you return to Yoruichi's side, and gently shake her shoulder.

At first you don't get a response, but slowly Yoruichi begins to stir.

“Hm?” she mutters, eyes still shut. “Thiziznice... Riku? Whuzgoinon?”

“Sorry,” you apologize. “I had to put you to sleep for a while there. You feeling okay?”

“Great,” she replies, nuzzling into your thigh a little. “Jus great... real sleepy though. The coffee on?”

“There's no coffee Yoruichi,” you begin.

“Whyzer no coffee?” Yoruichi groans, not wanting to let you finish. “And whyza bed so hard?”

“We're not at home, Yoruichi,” you explain patiently. “We're in the Schattenbereich.”

“That doesn't sound fun.”

“It's really not,” you admit, gently shaking her some more. “Come on, you gotta get up now. Grimmjow's still here.”

“Tell 'im to fuck off,” Yoruichi yawns, “then get back in bed.”

“Yoruichi, we were in the middle of fighting a battle here,” you counter.

“Too tired for that now, Riku,” Yoruichi yawns again. “Can't we just cuddle...”

“I mean the battle,” you clarify, feeling your face turn just the slightest bit red. “The one against Aizen and his goons? You know, in quincyland?”

Yoruichi is still for a moment... then sits bolt upright, catching you in the nose with her forehead.

“Are the kids okay?” she demands. “Is that asshole dead already? Are you okay? Did he get you?”

Then she seems to realize that you're not looking down at her anymore. “Riku?”

“Fine, took care of it, you broke my nose, and no,” you reply, clutching at the bridge of your nose. “You back to normal again?”

“Yeah, sorry for the trouble,” Yoruichi apologizes, turning on her knees to face you.

Question: When Riku cursed Pepe to a thousand lifetimes of cursed reincarnated misery, did she subconsciously use shinreiryoku to cast a divine curse? Casting a divine curse is serious business (i.e Izanami's divine curse created hollows and turned Izanagi into a limbless god on life support the moment he cheated on their marriage) since there's a lot of divine weight on the words spoken by anyone with divine juice flowing in them.

“Cordoned off my conscious mind,” she explains, “same way I dealt with Raijūsenkō at first. How'd you do it?”

“So you don't even know what his ability was?”

Yoruichi shakes her head. “Realized what was happening and did it almost reflexively. What was his trick?”

“He induced infatuation,” you explain.

That fat piece of scum?” Yoruichi grimaces, sticking out her tongue. “Glad I missed that. Kids still okay?”

“I stopped your body before it got to them,” you assure her, before giving her a quick hug. “Missed you.”

“I know,” she grins, before getting to her feet and turning to Grimmjow. “So, you're here.”

“Yeah,” the arrancar replies. “I am.”

“Sorry to keep you waiting...” Yoruichi begins, before realizing that Grimmjow is staring over her shoulder at you. “I'm sorry, am I interrupting something?”

“I may have gotten... a little upset,” you admit.

“A little?” Grimmjow scoffs. “You spared his life just to make sure he suffered.”

“And he deserved it,” you contend. “Fighting is one thing, but he forced someone I care deeply about to turn against her own principles, and against her loved ones. There are a few ways to lose my mercy, and that's one of them.”

“Don't be a horrible person and I'll treat you fairly.”

“You heard the lady,” Yoruichi shrugs. “If you want a rematch, I'm here. Come at me whenever you're ready.”

“That being said,” you interrupt, “I understand that both of you have your own reasons to fight... but neither of you is going to die today.”

“Excuse me?” Grimmjow demands. “So you mean to interfere after all?”

“Yes,” you admit. “But only when it becomes clear in my mind that one of you has lost.”

“And so that's how you shinigami operate?” Grimmjow scowls at you.

“It's how I choose to operate,” you correct him. “Taking offense at what the floating fat man...”

“PePe,” Grimmjow interrupts.

You pause for a moment. “At what the floating fat man did shows you have some concept of honor, and standing aside while I thrashed him shows you can be reasoned with. Were that not the case I'd have no problem if you died.”

“You're welcome to try,” you smile, drawing your paired butterfly swords from their sheath on your back. “But I think we can both remember how it went the last time you tried that.”

And just as you predicted, there's not much Grimmjow can do in his base form to make good on that threat. He styles himself a swift and powerful hunter, but his hand speed is actually kind of slow for how swift his sonido is. The only saving grace for him is that his movements are direct, which makes it harder for you to use any of the powerful, sweeping redirections that you know how to perform. He's like a boxer, really... which gives you an idea.

As you trade futile blows with him using your fists, elbows, and wrists, you start to work in a trick used by the Shaolin temples when fighting with weapons like yours. Instead of slashing you strike with the flat sides of your blades, separated by irregular intervals of normal strikes. Each of these blows is aimed for Grimmjow's head and face, and each throws him just a little more off than the last.

Finally your efforts pay off, after seconds of what basically amounted to a slap-fight: a blow over his left ear throws him off balance, giving you an opening. As he throws a right straight you catch his arm with the hooked guards on both your zanpakuto, and pull him forward so that you can drive your right knee into his ribs. Then for good measure you do it three more times in quick succession before Grimmjow throws you off.

“You cocky bitch,” he growls, spitting a little bit of blood. “I've had enough of your judo!”

“Is that so?” you muse playfully. “You're still standing, so you can't have had enough.”

With a roar of challenge he charges you, and you shift stances to meet him with something far less stylish... but far more brutally efficient. With a burst of raw power you release your shunkō and get to work.

His first punch is met with the metal D-guard of your left blade, and you take a half-step into his space to drive your elbow into his chin.

Grimmjow staggers back for a moment before resuming his assault with similar results: a counter-blow either stops or redirects his attack in almost the same instant that you slip past his guard and land a body blow. Three times you utterly deny him any offensive momentum, before he finally draws his sword out of frustration.

Now that you stop to think about it, it's clear who Grimmjow reminds you of. He reminds you of Bykuya when he was younger, at least in the sense that he takes himself far too seriously for it to be healthy. And so you can't help yourself but to start playing a little.

Your first move is to use a shunpō to slide past on Grimmjow's left side and smack the throat of his scabbard, which causes the rest of it to catch him behind the knee and throw him off his feet.

With a triumphant laugh you sidestep his awkward swing and raise your swords. “Tsuzuri Raizen!”

The spell charges the blade in your right hand, and you use it to quickly shock Grimmjow with it like it's a cattle prod. With a yelp he swings at you again only to meet your raised left-hand sword, and you kick him in the chest to send him staggering backwards.

“Tsuzuri Raizen!”

Again you charge your right-hand sword, using your left to create an opening so that you can jab Grimmjow a second time with it.

“Stop that!” he shouts, his voice pitching slightly higher in aggravation as he swings at you again and misses.

With a wide grin, you say it again. “Tsuzuri Raizen!”

You swing your right blade at him this time, which he's quick to parry... but this time, the jab and the shock come from your left-hand blade. After he jolts from the kidō and yelps one more time, he takes on a dramatic pose with his sword held out in front of him and the nails on his left hand touching the sword... only for you to kick his sword out of position with your toe, the bring your heel down on top of his head.

He hurriedly tries to take the pose again. “Grind...”

Your toe hits the back of his knee, and your heel catches him in the gut, sending him crashing to the ground. The tip of his sword embeds in the ground, and he runs his hand along the edge in a spurt of blood.

“Gran Rey Cero!” he roars in fury, sending a massive, space-warping blast of reiatsu in your direction.

You leave an afterimage and plant your foot right in Grimmjow's unsuspecting face.

“Not as good as Halibel's,” you inform him.

With an inarticulate scream of pure rage Grimmjow's fingernails meet his sword yet again, and he immediately swipes them with such force that the nails tear off with a fine mist of blood.

“Bankai,” you declare, summoning up a reel of razor-sharp, hair-thin steel wire which you weave forward into the air in front of you. Sure enough Grimmjow charges you with his newly-released power, desperate to tear into you with his panther-like claws.

But he stops short as he realizes you'd left another afterimage for him, and he feels the wire bite into his neck.

You loosen the wire ever so slightly, permitting your opponent to turn his head and stare at you with stunned eyes.

“... when?”

“When you were releasing your zanpakuto,” you explain. “I figured that you were angry enough to charge blindly, otherwise you might have had the presence of mind to avoid such a simple trap.”

“That's why?” he realizes.

“Partly,” you admit. “But partly... I think you could really benefit from the realization that you're not the end-all, be-all of combat prowess. There are people who are faster than you, there are people who are stronger than you. There are people who are smarter than you.”

“If you keep marching around with the assumption that those people don't exist, you'll just end up dead.”

“And what the hell business of it is yours!?” Grimmjow demands angrily, causing you to tighten up with the wires around his neck ever so slightly.

“It's been my business ever since we first fought,” you explain. “I guess my wife's been rubbing off on me... plenty of chances for it... but I don't like the idea of killing you just because of what we are.”

“What the hell are you even going on about?” Grimmjow laughs bitterly. “You're a shinigami, and I'm a hollow. Shinigami and hollows kill each other, that's how it's been for centuries and that's how it's always going to be.”

“So just hurry up and do it already!”

>Refuse, let him loose from the wires. If he wants to keep fighting you'll oblige.
>Use the wires to stun him until he can't even maintain his release anymore.

“Tsuzuri Raiden.”

A powerful surge of electricity courses through the wires and converges on Grimmjow, coursing through his body. At first he resists the urge to scream, but that quickly changes as his skin starts to visibly smolder around the contact points. Eventually his eyes roll back, and shortly after that he crashes to the tiles twitching. Finally he stops twitching, and his resurreccion starts to fade.

It's only then that you seal your own zanpakuto.

Grimmjow remains motionless, and his reiatsu is weakened. You walk over to him, to check that he's not in the process of dying.

“You still alive?” you ask.

He groans slightly. “You shoulda just killed me, dumb... dumb bitch...”

“Well, that may be how things used to be,” you assert. “But it isn't anymore. If it were, we wouldn't have two vasto lordes and a half-dozen adjuchas on our side.”

“What a disgrace,” he decides, shutting his eyes. “To lower themselves to working for others.”

“I consider them friends,” you sigh. “But you see everything as part of some grand struggle to survive, so it's not surprising you don't understand that.”

“I'm not your damn friend,” Grimmjow reminds you. “I'm just gonna keep coming for your life.”

“I was afraid you'd say that,” you sigh.

“I've already beaten you twice,” you observe calmly. “I know you don't want to accept this... but I'm stronger than you are, Grimmjow. We can keep doing this as many times as you like, but only ever fighting alone you're never going to get strong enough to beat me.”

“The hell are you saying.”

“I have people who push me to be stronger,” you explain. “And reasons to fight that go beyond myself. Reasons why I can never accept being as strong as I am, that force me to keep growing.”

“How stupid. Fighting for your own strength and for your own survival's enough for a hollow... and if it isn't that hollow dies. It's simple.”

“And you're not a hollow,” you assert. “You're an arrancar, which makes you more human than you're willing to admit.”

Grimmjow falls stubbornly silent.

“You're beaten,” you sigh, as it becomes evident that you're not going to get anything else out of Grimmjow right now. “So while you're lying there on the floor, try thinking long and hard about what happens after this is all over.”

“You'll all be dead,” Grimmjow asserts.

“Even so,” you reply, “that still means you've got some thinking to do, doesn't it?”

Riku glances over your shoulder as you return to her. “You okay leaving things like this?”

You shrug. “You can lead a cat to water, but it's hell trying to get it to bathe.”

She gives you a smug stare.

“You know what I mean,” you grumble.

Yeesh, we really whittled them down, huh? The remaining Schutzstaffel could be a problem, but once we figure out their powers in character incapacitating them shouldn't be impossible. Amagai would be a problem for our Captains, but our Arrancar could probably crush him, and Yammy's less of a threat so much as he is a time waster. Don't know about Wonderweiss though, his abilities will probably be different now, since he isn't specialized to kill Yamamoto, so he might be one of the easier kills, depending on who he was specialized against. Us, probably. Aizen's always going to be a threat, but everyone has a good grasp of what Kyoka Suigetsu can do, so hopefully nothing tragic will happen before someone who can deal with him confronts him. Still, it's probably going to take us to fell him, as he is now. Mayuri's probably not a threat, and if we can keep Giselle away from any more corpses we should be able to deal with her without to much trouble.

“Alright, students!” the instructor announces. “Today you're going to be racing to the top of Sōkyoku hill to test your shunpō skills.”

Many of your fellow students aren't watching the instructor however, as you've set to work wrapping your ankles and tucking your hakama into them. One of the noble-born students, a man with flowing dark hair and eyes most of the female students in your class would call piercing, interrupts you.

“You realize that will probably ruin the pleats?” he asks.

You shrug before going back to your work. “I'll shred them for certain otherwise.”

“Would the two of you mind?” the instructor demands impatiently.

“I'm listening,” you assure him. “Footrace to the Sōkyoku hill... which I'll never get to if I have to stop and change my hakama every five minutes.”

“It's a fair point,” Yoruichi allows, stunning the students present who for the most part hadn't even sensed her approaching or seen her flash step until she appeared among them. “Not very ladylike, running around without any pants on.”

“Ma'am,” you reply calmly as you finish your wrapping job, for once remembering not to be too overtly friendly with Yoruichi in front of others.

“Captain Shihōin of the Onmitsukidō will be participating,” the instructor announces over the murmur of the crowd of students. “If any of you are thinking about the Onmitsu as your future, this is your big shot.”

“We can't possibly be expected to beat her,” the noble from before mutters. “So what is she playing at?”

“She's not interested in hearing what you can't do,” you tell him in a low voice. “She's not that type of person. She's here to see what you can do.”

“Good to hear that you understand,” Yoruichi muses, suddenly standing right next to you and causing the noble to just about jump out of his skin. “And since you understand, I'm sure you wouldn't dare disappoint me.”

“Of course not, Captain,” you nod politely.

When the instructor gives the signal an entire class worth of rookie shinigami take off running at once. A few manage to make it to the top of the wall surrounding the Academy training field in their first step, but of all of the runners he one who makes it there first by a wide margin is Yoruichi. She takes an immediate second step in essentially the exact same instant her foot touches ground. You follow a split second behind her, nearly matching her alacrity: but your second step isn't a match.

She clearly makes it further than you, by at least thirty meters... just far enough for you to see her do it, you realize. Yoruichi could have left you so far behind her that you'd never even hope to catch up, but instead she's letting you chase her.

It's a challenge.

Caution to the wind, you push yourself to your limit with each step after that. Tiles break underfoot as you ride the current of your own reishi, surging forward with barely-controlled power. But no matter how hard you seem to press onward your gains are only ever temporary. Every meter you manage to reel Yoruichi in she takes back with her next step. You hardly even notice the Sōkyoku hill that had started out in the far distance growing larger with each movement, until Yoruichi kicks off the roof of a high tower in a blinding burst of speed.

The same movement from you basically collapses the roof in on itself.

“Ah, nice of you to join me!” Yoruichi calls from her perch atop the execution stand. “You seem tired, why don't you take a rest!”

“Shaddup...” you gasp, the effects of the exertion finally setting in. “I keep forgetting how damn fast you really are. You're a freaking monster, you know that?”

I'm the monster?” she snorts, appearing at your side. “How many miles ahead of the next student are you? And you've been at this for how many months now?”

“I'm not...” you begin, before realizing that Yoruichi has a point: you'll have plenty of time to catch your breath before your classmates finally arrive.

“Point taken,” you admit.

“Take a break for once,” Yoruichi suggests, taking a seat nearby. “You ran a good race, you earned some rest.”

“We've never had a real race,” you sigh, “because I get the feeling I wouldn't be able to compete.”

“That'll change,” Yoruichi shrugs.

“We'll see.”

“Well,” you smile, “if it isn't Captain Shihōin. Seems familiar.”

“Captain Kusajishi,” your wife bows her head ever so slightly. “Let's make this fun, shall we?”

The students, who had mostly started staring at Yoruichi after her abrupt arrival, all snap back to look at you.

“Yeah, sure,” your smile widens. “I've been looking forward to this for a hundred years.”

Some of the students turn to the instructor in confusion.

“These two Captains have a history,” the instructor explains, a totally different shinigami from the time when you were one of the rookies trying to make a name for yourself. “I'll confess I want to know which is faster, the Shunshin or the Tetsushin.”

“Well, I've wondered the same thing lately,” Yoruichi admits. “Still running for the execution grounds?”

“That's the plan,” you nod.

“Count us down,” Yoruichi orders.

The instructor nods. “Three... two... one...”

In an instant you're off, stepping off the familiar wall at very nearly the same instant... no, if anything your step is almost imperceptibly faster than hers. If anything, it may just be that your hirenkyaku is a little smoother than her shunpō, transitioning from one step to another with hardly any loss of momentum. But the second step reveals that Yoruichi's true shunpō carries her significantly farther than you, meaning she's effectively a bit quicker than you. It's not long before your wife starts to open up a lead on you, and you both draw ever closer to the Sōkyoku hill.

At the last possible second, with Yoruichi's 'fair' victory all but assured, you devise a novel solution... you take two 'steps' at the same time.

The tower Yoruichi kicked off last time serves as her springboard a second time, and a fraction of a second later crumbles as your body smashes through it, hurtling towards the execution grounds. In another fraction of a second you slam into the ground, taking a substantial chunk out of the hillside in a cloud of dust and debris.

A few seconds later, Youichi looks down at you with a look of mild shock.

“You... alive there, Riku?”

You test your limbs for a moment. “I think so?”

“Good. You know something?”

“No?”

“I told you so.”
>3/3
>>
>>2526111
So you're saying instead of one foot, Riku used "two feet" to take a step. KENNY LOGIC
>>
>>2526111
So...we sort of won, I guess? I mean her shunpō is a bit faster then our hirenkyaku, but we can stack the two on top of each other, though we basically can't maneuver at all when we do, so I'd say she still wins generally speaking. Still, good to know how it'd turn out.
>>
>>2526143
>>2526165
She's used it before, against Reigai Unohana. Yoruichi herself would admit that she's considered it since learning the basics of hirenkyaku, but that she rejected it as a useful combat technique: partly because she saw what Riku did with it years earlier and how that turned out.

The absolute limit of either rapid movement technique is your own ability to process the change in position. Doubling up the rapid movement techniques by initiating a shunpo during a hirenkyaku bypasses the usual psychological restraints, but doesn't solve the issue of not being able to see what you're doing.
>>
>>2526205
hmm... it seems like it's only solvable by getting dose of Mayuri's super sensory enhancement drug. but Riku would have to stay at the shunpo Kirenkyaku speed limit until it wears off. And even then the moment she stops her body will be as slow as molasses.
>>
>>2526205
It might not be useful as a combat technique, but if you really need to move and you’ve got a straight line path, it’s pretty good.
>>
>>2526244
oh, goddamn.
imagine riku on a high but proper dosage of that drug.

unstoppable.
>>
>>2526111
This reminded me of something- If you can stack shunpo and hirenkyaku, then what about adding sonido, or the fullbringer equivalent? What about using all four?

You are Kurosaki Ichigo, and Rukia was pretty damned determined to get you away from where your aunt will be fighting. After several minutes of being continually shushed by her, you can finally get a word in edgewise.

“What the hell was that all about!?” you demand sharply. Maybe a bit too sharply, but you can't really hide the fact that you're frustrated over not being told anything.

“Listen,” Rukia replies, staring you dead in the eyes. “How much do you know about hollows?”

“Only what you and my parents have told me,” you admit.

“And did your parents tell you about the Menos Grande?”

You shake your head “I know about gillians, and that the closer they look to humans the more dangerous they are.”

“The highest form of natural hollow evolution is known as the Vasto Lorde,” Rukia explains to you, slowing the entire group for a moment and signaling you to take shelter near the bottom of a large structure that looks as though it was built abandoned. “For as long as I can remember they were considered mythical... when I was in the academy we were taught that you could probably count their total number with your fingers, and that unless you were a Captain your only course of action if you encountered one was to retreat.”

“The only one we'd confirmed in the last two hundred years was during the Great War, a few decades before we joined the academy,” Renji adds. “The woman who fought and killed it was Captain Kusajishi.”

“Not only that, but when it came out that Aizen had betrayed us, the arrancar who serve at our Captain's side were cautiously assessed by several of our Captains,” Rukia continues, her expression grim. “It was concluded that were Aizen to gather five Vasto Lordes and make them into arrancars... the Seireitei would be doomed.”

“But what about Starrk and Halibel?” you ask, not quite understanding the point of this sudden lecture. “Wasn't Halibel at least a Vasto Lorde at one point? Least that's what I though I'd heard somewhere.... probably from Apacci or something.”

“That's true,” Rukia nods. “And consider that for a moment... not only does Captain Kusajishi consider them her friends, she strengthened Halibel's abilities herself. Why do you think she would take such a risk, helping forge a power capable of destroying us in the long run?”

“It's because your aunt is overwhelmingly strong, Ichigo,” Rukia tells you sternly. “Enough to stand with those monstrously strong arrancar as respected equals... and I have never seen her so angry that she would raise her voice to intimidate a subordinate, like she did just now.”

“You may think of her as being a lot like your human family and friends, but if we stayed, we'd be getting between a force that could bring the Seireitei to ruin and her prey,” Renji clarifies Rukia's point. “Right now it's our place to continue the mission, and to keep you focused on that by any means necessary.”

After taking a few moments to digest that warning, you nod in agreement. “Right. My mom and Ishida's are in the tower at the top of that castle, right?”

Ishida nods in confirmation. “That is where they should be.”

“Then we need to get there,” you grumble, glancing at the tower once again. It's far closer than it was when you started out with this wild scheme, but still... the mass of it is imposing enough. And you don't know what kind of resistance to expect.

Plus, Chad in particular isn't in a condition to fight. Tatsuki is probably better off, but her reiatsu reserves feel low. She's exhausted.

>We should find some cover, move through buildings until we reach the top of the fortress.

“This place has to have something like sewers, right?” you muse. “Someplace underground we can move through?”

“Possibly,” Rukia sighs, seeming to consider the possibility. “You used that trick when you were trying to rescue me I hear.”

“And it worked pretty well,” Renji adds.

“One problem,” Tatsuki speaks up. “You crashed through the ground earlier, remember? You ended up in Hueco Mundo.”

That's technically true... but you're not actually in Hueco Mundo. Which means that you ended up there through some sort of planar fuckery rather than because the hollow realm is literally, physically present below your feet. So there must be some substantial amount of space below the surface you can see around your feet that overlaps with Hueco Mundo.

“It's not mutually exclusive,” you scratch your head. “We're not literally in Hueco Mundo right now, are we?”

Rukia shakes her head. “No.”

“Then me ending up there was a fluke,” you shrug. “There must be something solid all these buildings are founded on.”

“Point,” Chad agrees.

“Well, let's look for some tunnels then,” Tatsuki sighs.

After taking a few minutes to search the nearby buildings, you find that one seems to have a basement. That basement in turn has a closed-off passageway which seems to run parallel to the street you just left, leading you in the direction of the fortress. With any luck this should get you there without any interruption.

After several minutes of running, your pace slows.

“Anyone else feel... funny?” you ask.

“Funny how?”

To your surprise and concern, it's Ishida who takes what you'd considered a vague feeling of unease and treated it with the utmost seriousness. “Would you say it feels a little like motion sickness?”

Your eyes widen a little. “Um... yes?”

Ishida shuts his eyes. “Someone's messing with us. Ichigo, you and I are sensing movement that we're not tracking with our eyes, and the disconnect is leading to slight spatial disorientation.”

“In human words, please?” Renji grumbles. “You sound like you swallowed a medical textbook.”

“It means someone is moving the tunnel we're in,” Tatsuki summarizes.

Renji seems taken aback. “How did you understand that?”

“Because I'm literate.”

Renji silently mimics Tatsuki's retort, which you ignore for now. “Do we have a chance to counter whatever this is? Maybe escape?”

“In a word...” Ishida considers the options. “Maybe.”

“Maybe?” Renji repeats.

“Maybe,” Ishida nods. “It depends on how it's being done.”

With a colossal crash, you demolish a ten-foot wide section of the wall in a single blast. Your companions all shelter themselves from the flying dust and stone, and before the cloud is even cleared Rukia's yelling at you.

“What would happen if you'd collapsed the tunnel, dumbass!?” she demands.

“Whatever!” you scoff. “You telling me a little rubble's gonna bother you? Tatsuki can walk through solid objects, Chad could take a lamp post across the back even before he had powers, Renji's Renji...”

“The hell's that mean?” Renji coughs on a lungful of dust.

“Tell me,” you continue, sheathing your re-sealed zanpakuto, “since when're you so damned fragile?”

“I'm a seated officer in the Gotei...” Rukia begins, only to find Tatsuki tugging on her sleeve. “What is it, Arisawa, I'm...”

Tatsuki points at where you attacked... where there's not just a hole in the wall. It's a hole in the wall, behind which there's another tunnel stretching into the distance.

“Oh, you've gotta be friggin' kidding me!” you protest.

“It seems the reishi that makes up the corridor has been rearranged,” Ishida observes, pointing down what used to be the hallway towards what's now plainly a dead end.

“No choice then, huh?” you realize with a huff. “Well, guess we keep walking then.”

Several more minutes pass, and the passage climbs what feels like a couple of flights worth of stairs before opening up into a larger, rounded room with a high ceiling. In it stands a single figure, with heavy-rimmed glasses and shockingly pink hair.

“Welcome, intruders,” the arrancar greets you with a smile. “I must say, you really made a mess of things downstairs, it was all I could do to have a new corridor constructed in such short order. Why must people like you be so difficult?”

Well, at least he won't die such a horrific death this time around.

Ishida snaps to action, instantly summoning up his reishi bow... only to watch in horror as it dissipates before his eyes.

"Oh, don't even bother with such methods," the arrancar taunts. "This room is specifically designed to slow the vibrations that characterize a quincy's reishi weapons and give them their power. Basically, you can't maintain their cohesion."

Next Renji releases his zanpakuto and winds up for a powerful swing. "Roar, Zabimaru!"

Even more stunning than Ishida's complete failure, this arrancar simply blocks Zabimaru with his palm, as if it were the easiest thing in the world.

"Getsuga Tensho!" you shout, releasing your blade and swinging it in a wide arc. For good measure you turn the heavy head of your weapon and swing it down a second time, and even a third, launching three pulses of Getsuga at the cocky prick.

The blasts all strike true, but when the black reiatsu dissipates only your opponent's clothing seems the worse for wear.

“Well, nice meeting you,” you begin, “but we've got places to go. So...”

“Ah, I see,” the arrancar nods. “Places, you say?”

“Places,” you nod.

“Bala.”

You manage to knock Chad out of the way and take the hit yourself, the blast of concentrated reiatsu searing your skin and nearly knocking you off your feet. But it's nothing you can't take.

You turn to see that the arrancar is still smiling eerily.

“Rikujōkōrō!” Rukia shouts, pinning the arrancar in place with a quick bakudō.

But to all of your shock, he simply shatters the kidō as if it weren't there... or more precisely, like it didn't affect him at all.

“Well I wouldn't want to keep you,” he shrugs, waving a hand as if none of that had even happened. One wall slides away to reveal a door, just wide enough for two people to walk through side by side. “You can leave if you're in such a hurry... but only one of you. “Well, can't say I'm disappointed shinigami!” the arrancar laughs, snapping his fingers to close the door. “And you saved yourself some disappointment too... because if you think I'd actually let you just walk away you're insane.”

“Espada number Eight, Szayelaporro Granz,” he introduces himself.

“Only number eight?” Renji scoffs.

“You can act dismissive all you want after you've actually hit me,” Szayelaporro counters with a smirk.

“He has a point,” Rukia observes. “Nothing we have tried had an effect on him. He mentioned something about Ishida's bow?”

“It seems he's the type to prepare ahead of time,” Ishida agrees. “His reiatsu may be weaker than other arrancars or some of the Sternritter, but his intellect may compensate for it.”

“So what you're saying is if he can't anticipate what we'll do he won't be able to fight us effectively,” Tatsuki muses.

“Rukia, Tatsuki, the two of you trained together, right?” you wonder aloud. “So do you have some sort of... I dunno, combination attack you can do?”

They both look at you like you told them your favorite pizza was anchovies and pineapple with pesto... like there was not a single thing that came out of your mouth that they found agreeable.

“No?” Rukia replies.

“Is that how you think fighting works?” Tatsuki presses.

“So you can't work together?” you press.

“Well...” Rukia begins.

“So you do have a combination attack,” you observe.

“It's not like that,” Tatsuki insists. “It's not like an anime or something, we just know how to fight in a way that we don't accidentally kill each other.”

“So you have a combo attack,” Renji shrugs. “No shame in admitting it.”

“Let's just get back to the fighting,” Ishida sighs.

“Agreed,” Tatsuki nods curtly. “We'll continue this conversation never.”

Tatsuki leads the attack, her punches slower than you expected but still enough to force Szayelaporro onto his back foot. Then, at a moment Rukia seems to feel more than anything else, she swings Sode no Shirayuki and produces a wave of ice.

“Tōōkenju!” Tatsuki shouts, her body shimmering slightly like a mirage as Rukia's attack passes through her and hits Szayelaporro.

The arrancar's body ices over for a moment before Tatsuki lands a powerful punch that shatters him. Or at least it shatters the ice, and leaves his clothing in tatters. While Szayelaporro's bare skin is clearly burned and bruised, he's not nearly as badly hurt as you'd expect.

“He's still standing?' Chad wonders aloud.

“You bitch!” Szayelaporro curses, backhanding Tatsuki just quickly enough that she can't quite believe it. The blow catches her under the chin and sends her flying, though she rolls back to her feet.

So she's that exhausted already... that doesn't bode well.

“Now I'm going to have to change my uniform,” Szayelaporro complains.

“I'll be back, invaders,” Szayelaporro announces, opening a doorway in the wall. “So do yourselves and me a big favor... don't bother trying to escape. I won't be long.”

And then he's gone.

“Strange,” Chad comments.

“Yeah, but we've seen how he manipulates this building we're in,” you point out. “Even if we did try to run away, I doubt he'd let us get far.”

“So we're just gonna wait?” Renji complains. “To hell with that.”

“Rukia's shikai worked,” Tatsuki insists quietly. “So far it's the only thing that has for some reason.”

“Do you have an ice-related kidō, Renji?” Ishida asks.

Renji looks annoyed. “There's Hyōga Seiran, but...”

“You don't know it.”

“I know it!” Renji insists. “I just... suck at controlling it.”

“How bad?” you ask.

“I might die,” he admits.

“He's even had Hadō 31 backfire on him in the past,” Rukia explains. “Honestly, for a Lieutenant his kidō is up to snuff. But that's not very good compared to a skilled Lieutenant or a Captain that's not Zaraki.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Renji grumbles.

“Hey, get better at kidō,” Tatsuki shrugs.

So... the plan is to abuse Rukia's ice powers when the Espada returns. You can only hope that will be enough.

And sadly it's getting very late here, and I'm absolutely spent. So I have to call it a night. Thanks for stopping by and tolerating my janky schedule, archive's up, and hope you enjoyed!

I will not be running at all next weekend due to travel, and I don't think I can get through a meaningful amount of the next fight a few posts at a time through the week. So I'll do an omake or two to tide you over.

Sorry about that, but them's the breaks sometimes.

“You know what?”

Sung Sun glances over at her long-time companion, seemingly content to have Mila Rose answer for her instead of bothering to guess. “Of course not. I may be smarter than you, but I'm not a mind reader.”

“Knock it off,” Mila Rose sighs, “I'm being serious here.”

“So am I,” Sung Sun replies. “Be clearer.”

“I'm still not sure I trust this Captain,” Mila Rose admits, this time in blunt terms.

“Even after all this time?” Sung Sun replies, seemingly surprised. “Why?”

“I don't really know myself,” Mila Rose admits. “Come on, don't you feel at least a little bit the same way?”

Sung Sun takes a few moments to consider her answer. “I suppose it does seem too good to be true.”

“And when something seems too good to be true it usually isn't,” Mila Rose observes.

“That seems awfully negative,” Sung Sun frowns.

“I mean, I think she means well,” Mila Rose begins to back off. “But I just can't help but wonder what her actual long-term plans are, you know?”

“Lady Halibel certainly seems to trust her.”

“Lady Halibel likes her,” Mila Rose corrects her compatriot. “As much as I'd like to think Lady Halibel is completely perfect in every way, Lady Kusajishi may have become a massive blind spot for her over the years. That'll happen when you want to believe in someone.”

“Like family,” Sung Sun mutters, shutting her eyes.

“What?”

“Like family,” Sung Sun repeats. “Of course you want to believe in the people closest to you. Lady Halibel seems to consider Lady Kusajishi to be family... and from what I can tell, Lady Kusajishi seems to feel the same way.”

“What brings this on?”

Mila Rose frowns deeply. “You ever wonder if we're being left behind?”

“You mean in terms of our development as arrancar?” Sung Sun queries.

“No, I mean... forget about it.”

“No, say what you meant to say,” Sung Sun counters immediately. “If it is really bothering you.”

“Apacci is stronger than we are by now,” Mila Rose clarifies. “That's not something we can deny anymore. But do you ever get the feeling that... Lady Halibel thinks less of us now than she used to?”

“Why would you ever think that?”

“Because ever since Apacci showed up... and ever since Lady Kusajishi strolled back into our lives with this talk of arrancar... I've just felt sort of... forgotten, you know? Like we should stand right there with Apacci but we're completely unable.”

“I see,” Sung Sun nods knowingly. “You're jealous.”

“... no I'm not.”

“Like the child of a first marriage,” Sung Sun continues. “Apacci gets more attention because she got here last, and now you have to deal with Lady Halibel treating Lady Kusajishi as her equal.”

“First thing is that Apacci isn't Lady Halibel's kid,” Mila Rose contends.

“Though you obviously think of her as like a mother,” Sung Sun counters.

“And second,” Mila Rose continues as if Sung Sun hadn't even said anything at all, “Lady Kusajishi is already married to someone else. So the whole damn comparison makes no sense.”

“The Captain treats Apacci like a daughter,” Sung Sun explains her reasoning. “It doesn't have to be a perfect analogy, but it does fit with your behavior.”

Mila Rose doesn't answer immediately, but does eventually speak up. “Maybe you have a point. But what does that mean we should do about it?”

“Nothing.”

“Nothing?”

“Nothing,” Sung Sun repeats. “Ultimately, I trust in Lady Halibel's instincts. I find myself more concerned with what I can do to support her than any misgivings I have towards Lady Kusajishi.”

“Do you think that I'm wrong?”

After a few moments, Mila Rose shakes her head. “No.”

Honestly, they should have found someone to hang out with by now.
They need boyfriends.

I think mila might like someone from 11th, while sun-sung might prefer someone from 4th or 1st

Pfff, bit late to be having doubts ladies. You’ve been living in the dimensional equivalent of that captain’s basement for, what, decades at least, right?

Yay, my suggestion made it!

Those two are unfortunate to be surrounded by such monstrous powers. Sort of made them lose perspective I am thinking. I am pretty sure that only some of the captains and Rangiku could stand up to them without severe risk to life and limb if they went full blown murder-frenzy srs mode.

I have been mulling over the differences between Arrancar and Shinigami for most of this quest, and this comparison reminded me of it.

Disclaimer: I mean, it's Kubo, so trying to keep relative power levels consistent and coherent is tricky at best.

Long story short, I got a couple working theories. If Queen, or anyone, wants to chime in with their take, or just to tell me how wrong I am, feel free.

First, Arrancar (proper full ones anyway) are all spiritually beefy, almost by definition. So the spread in spiritual power or reiryoku is not as proportionally dramatic as it is for Shinigami. In other words: the scrubbiest of Arrancar would still be more than a match for scores of scrubbigami.

I say this because Arrancar are (mostly) derived from Adjuchas, an amalgam of Gillian. Gillian are powerful and dangerous in their own right and are themselves derived from myriad hollows, which still pose a threat to lesser Shinigami. I realize that there has to be some loss on the chain, but I rather doubt any Arrancar would not be up to smacking around a Gillian, a feat that we are told in canon only lieutenants or better can do.

The implications of this is what interest me. Arrancar all start with extreme amounts of power cultivated over the previous stages of their lifecycle. Their techniques reflect this since they are mostly brutally simple and excessive displays of raw power. In spite of this, they don't tire easily, again probably due to their vast reserves. (As an aside, while Apacci is ahead of the other two in Reiryoku, I posit that the biggest difference is the skill with which she wields it.)

So how do Shinigami compete at all? Mostly Kubo. Seriously though, raw Reiryoku isn't everything. Skill and technique factor in, so does cunning, also some types of Reiryoku just trump others even at lower levels. But if you take one thing from this: it should be that the few Shinigami who do compete with Arrancar or even Espada in pure strength, speed or toughness are truly exceptional individuals.

Thanks for reading.
