You are the TEMPLAR, a holy knight sent to clear the frontier of monsters and heresy!
Currently, you and your party were camped out in the dead section of the weirwood forest. A few days of sample taking, studying, and experimentation have gone on without much incident other than that treant attack, and it appeared that Elias had finally come to a conclusion.

"It appears Nino's findings match my own." Elias says ominously. "The soil here is completely devoid of mana. This level of consumption is not something even an entire forest of weirwood trees should be able to achieve."

"So was it that big Elf tree, then?" Janice frowns, the concern clear on her face.

"No, as Nino has shown, the treant was powered by its own mana source." Elias shakes his head. "This means that there is some other, independent cause to this."

"You have any ideas, then?" Morgan raises an eyebrow.

"Hmmmm..." Elias eyes glow orange white in contemplation. "Do you have access to any underground areas beneath this valley? Tunnels, caves, Ruins of any kind?"

"Possibly." Janice raises a suspicious eyebrow. "Why would you ask?"

"Because mana comes from all types of places." Elias explains. "Elves receive it from Luna, clerics and paladins receive it from Sol, the dwarves forge their runes from the earth, and us mages draw it from the air around us."

Elias then bends down to a knee and presses a finger against the dried dirt.

"But the most common and plentiful source of mana comes from below. It rises up from the depths, out of the ground and into the air. We still don't know the exact source or why this phenomenon occurs, but we understand it enough to know where it should be coming from."

Janice and Artya then look at each other, the concern clear on Janice's face.

"There is one place but... it's complicated." Janice frowns. "There is such a place you describe. We call it the Emerald Well."

"Well then let us go." Elias says.

"Like I said, it's not so simple." Janice sighs. "The Well is a sacred place. Outsiders aren't even supposed to know about it, much less be near it. I doubt the greenseers guarding it will let you into it."

"Can't we just talk to your boss?" Naru suggests.

"...If you can convince him." Janice frowns. "But be warned, it won't be a popular subject at all."

You nod to Janice.

"I think he wants to go see the greenseers." Morgan speaks for you, already surmising your intentions.

"Well, all right..." Janice sighs. "But I don't think any of us are going to like this."

"Let us go, then." Elias says.

You all load up into the wagons and follow Janice as she leads you back into the forest. Well, the still living parts of it. As you progress, you begin to notice that the weirwood trees were getting increasingly larger and older, the foliage growing denser as you went.

"It feels.... suffocating here." Morgan gasps as she puts a hand to her chest.

"The weir magic is extremely strong here." Janice explains, also looking a bit under the weather. "Those of us sensitive to it can feel its effects."

"Interesting." Elias says, his eyes glowing brighter. "It is certainly a type of mana thick in the air."

"Smells nice!" Nino beams.

"But there shouldn't be this much in the air." Justin observes. "This can't be an natural phenomenon."

"Let's just get this over with!" Caroline grunts.

You turn to Naru, Niko and Valentia. They just shrug, apparently not feeling anything at all.

Romulus simply whimpers, though you're not sure if it's from the mana in the air or he's simply reading the mood.

"We're here." Janice announces.

The wagons roll to a stop and up ahead you see cave nearly covered up by massive tree roots, leaving only a tiny opening. Standing in front of the opening were three heavily cloaked figures. One strides towards you while the other two stay behind, continuing the stand guard over the entrance.

"What is the meaning of this, Janice?" The greenseer asks, pulling back his hood to reveal a wrinkled, gnarled face, reminding you of a tortoise. In fact, his hunched back my be that way for reason. Either way, he looked absolutely ancient.

"I'm sorry Ruith, but it's important." Janice sighs. "There may be something wrong in the Well. Something that may be causing the forest's ills."

"That doesn't mean you should bring outsiders here!" Ruith hisses. "This is a sacred place! Were it not for you being present I'd have their eyes plucked out for even gazing upon it!"

Your hand slides ever closer to your halberd, but you're stopped by a rapid elbow jab from Morgan.

"Please." Janice pleads. "You of all of us should know how the forest is ailing. Can you not even consider the possibility the Well is at the center of it all?"

The turtle greenseer looks to Janice, the group, and finally resting on Morgan, who flinches. His eyes narrow.

"I can allow you, Artya, and the White Wolf to enter." He concedes. "The rest of you cannot enter."

"But-" Janice starts.

"We are already committing heresies even talking to you." Ruith grunts. "Only the people of this valley can make the pilgrimage."

"Is that so...." Morgan mumbles.

No, this wouldn't stand. You wouldn't let Morgan go off alone. You step forward and stare down the greenseer.

"Ah, a warrior if I've ever seen one." Ruith matches your stare, having long outlived the concept of intimidation. "What shall you do? Fight your way in? You may try, and you will fail."

That's when you noticed more green cloaks appearing from the trees. Stealthy like Elves.

However, perhaps there's a way you can convince Ruith to let you pass. You pull off your gauntlets and grab Morgan's bow...

The moment your hands touch Morgan's bow, you can feel the changes coming as your skin hardens into reddened scale, your fingernails elongating and blackening to become tiny claws. The surefire marks of a dragon.

Ruith's eyes widen in shock, and you're almost afraid the elderly greenseer is going to drop dead on the spot. However, he manages to regain his composure, and gives you a serious look.

"It seems there's more to you than meets the eye, outsider." You grunts. "You may make the pilgrimage as well. But be warned, the path you take will be treacherous, especially one who is not accustomed to the magic of the weir."

You nod. You've taken big risks before and you've managed to get through it.

"Wait!" Nino comes and hugs you. "Good luck!"

You nod as you pat her head, but you can feel her slipping something into your pocket, as well.

"A summon stone. Good for one use!" She winks as she breaks off the hug and skips off to the others.

That Nino...

"You may proceed." Ruith steps aside, leaving just the cave ahead of you.

"I can take the lead, if you want." Janice offers. "This is my first time in the Well, too, but I think my senses will still work better..."

Morgan is still silent and anxious.

You step aside and let Janice take the lead. Artya follows directly behind, with Morgan going third and you handle the rear of the formation.

You give one last look at the rest of the party as the stay behind, kept at bay by the gathered greenseers while Ruith makes a strange gesture as you enter. Hopefully one for good luck.

Inside the gave, you note how the walls were covered with vines and roots so thick that you couldn't even see the rock underneath. The leaves jutting out of the vines and roots also glowed a soft green, illuminating the cave and giving credence to the name of Emerald Well.

In addition, as you were now inside the cave, you could feel a breeze flowing. But outwards, and oddly cool and refreshing.

So far so good.

You felt like trying to start a conversation, but talking was a distraction, and could give you away to possible danger lurking within.

You decide to stay quiet for now, but you put a reassuring hand on Morgan's shoulder to remind her that you were still there. Morgan unconsciously returns the gesture, putting her hand on top of yours.

"All right, the weir mana is start to get much thicker as we go deeper." Janice explains, looking much more lethargic than normal. "This is where the pilgrimage really gets serious."

"What... what happens if we fail?" Morgan asks, also moving slower and sluggish.

"We either turn back... or we don't." Janice sighs. "How are you holding up, Templar?"

You just give a thumbs up. You're not feeling any ill effects at all. At least not yet.

"Lucky you." Janice says.

Arty also gives you a jealous look.

And with that, the four of you delve ever deeper into the depths...

As the four of you proceed further into the Well, your demihuman companions seemed to be holding their own.

However, Janice raises her fist, signaling a stop.

"Damn." Janice growls. "We've got a bit of an obstacle in our way."

You lean over to get a better look up front, and you can see a massive bear, asleep in the cave and blocking the path.

"It probably wandered in here and succumbed to the mana." Janice explains as the bear snores.

Artya pokes Janice's shoulder cautiously.

"Or it can just be hibernating regularly and it'll wake up and eat us if we disturb it." Janice groans.

You decide it would be better for you to move around the bear. Carefully. You kneel in front of it, offering to boost the girls over.

"Why, thank you." Janice smiles.

The combination of your strength and the girls' natural agility lets them clear the sleeping bear easily.

However, now was the hard part. You needed to get past it without waking it. There was a small gap between it and the wall. Perhaps if you could squeeze through...

You decide not to say anything and your group continues deeper and deeper into the well.

Unfortunately, both Morgan and Artya seem to be unable to handle the thick atmosphere of mana, and the both of them crumple and fall. You're barely able to catch Morgan while Janice does the same for Artya.

"I was afraid of this." Janice sighs. "They're too young. Too inexperienced to deal with this."

You pick up both Morgan and Artya and carry them underneath your arms, and you and Janice proceed on. You couldn't afford to leave the both of them behind, and you didn't have tie to turn back and try to get around that bear again.

Finally, the path ends, leading into a large, dark hole. Even the soft green glow of the mana infused leaves down here couldn't reach to the bottom.

But there was nowhere else to go.

Still holding tight to Morgan and Artya, both you and Janice step off the edge and drop into the darkness.

Thankfully, there's more then enough soft vines reaching across the pit that they slow your fall considerably. By the time you reach the bottom, you land in a soft bed of moss alongside Janice, who lands on her feet. She gives you a thumbs up and wink.

And there, up ahead, you could see a twinkling blue light seeping through the gaps in a wall of vines and roots. You briefly set Morgan and Artya down and stomp forward, getting a grip on the vines and tearing them apart, widening the opening.

And what you see stops you cold in your tracks.

In front of you was what looked to be a large lake of ice, but closer inspection revealed that it was crystal. What you were looking at was the very top of a massive crystal. Just how deep the glowing gem went down, you weren't sure. You couldn't even begin to fathom the size. And even you, a human with no magical aptitude, could feel the energy buzzing in the air. Your hairs stood on end and your mouth started to taste like copper.

"W-wow..." Janice blinks. "This is... this is the Well?"

So was this the mana source the weirwoods were feeding off of? You lookaround, and sure enough, you could see all of the roots jutting from the rock, reaching down to touch the crystal's surface. Looking down, you could even see even more ancient roots penetrating the crystal and reaching further down.

You also notice a great many roots burned away.

"What... what could have done this?" Janice gasps. "That's why.... someone's been destroying the roots!"

You bring up the image of Elias in your mind as you set the summoning stone down on the ground. The stone glows brighter as the target is set, and there's a flash of light.

And Elias stands before you, his eyes practically on fire now as he takes in his surroundings.

"Mmmmmm, yes, I see you've found it." Elias chuckles. "Pure, crystallized mana. It exists!"

"Tell us what's causing that!" Janice points to the burned roots.

"Now THAT is the sure signs of drragonfire." Elias says matter of factly. "A very large one, too."

"A... a DRAGON?" Janice pales. "What's it doing down here? How did it get down here?"

"Dragons are ancient beings, and the oldest are known to hibernate underground for centuries. Even millennia." Elias explains. "I would not be surprised that once such dragon had taken root here. Judging from the timing, it's woken from a hibernation and has been consuming the weirwood roots for sustenance."

"That's... that's horrible!" Janice gasps.

"Agreed. These trees are too valuable risk losing." Elias nods and turns to you. "So what is your preferred course of action?"

The Seers let us in for this very reason. This could very well be an old dragon looking after its young or eggs, or one in its prime.

So are we killing it, negotiate with it, or are we going to try to befriend it?

An Ancient Dragon would definitely be a notable asset in the war against the Elves maybe not by itself, but they could call upon a flight, or their descendants to assist.

You simply draw your halberd. If there was a dragon down here, it was your duty to slay it. You couldn't just throw away Ornstein's teachings.

"Hmmmm, all right. I should have expected this." Elias nods. "Well, there are a few alternatives. I can create a mass summon spell to bring the rest of our party down here to bolster our numbers, or I can work on a countermeasure to get Morgan and Artya here back up on their feet."

Huh, that didn't sound so bad.

"Be warned, though." Elias' eyes burn brighter. "Such powerful rituals will be sure to attract the attention of the dragon, therefore a distraction on your part would be required."

"You mean be the bait." Janice groans.

Maybe not on friendly enough terms to ride them (unless a female dragon decides to go human form to "strengthen" her lineage with some fresh blood), but it would be more impressive to ride a dragon than to slay one.

You point to the unconscious Morgan and Artya. You had a feeling their skills would be invaluable. Plus you couldn't afford to have them remain unconscious and be liabilities.

"Understood." Elias nods as he kneels besides the two girls. "Thankfully, there's no shortage of mana to fuel this ritual. Just be sure that the dragon doesn't roast me."

You give him a affirmative nod when you suddenly feel a rumbling sensation.

"Something's coming." Janice scowls as she bares her teeth. "It smells of ash and smoke."

And then you saw it. A honest to Sol red dragon, massive and ancient. It lumbered forward from the darkness, fire spurting from its mouth and nostrils, its two amber eyes burning like miniature Sols. You looked in your direction, or more accurately, Elias. It was attracted by the sudden magical activity.

You felt your heart race at the sight. Whether it was fear, awe, or exhilaration, you weren't sure. It didn't really matter at this point.

"This is certainly going to be a tough one." Janice says mournfully. "I'll draw it off. You protect the others."

Well, Janice certainly had you beat in the speed department, but you had the training and the armor...

You step forward and push Janice aside, taking her place to grab the dragon's attention.

"H-hey!" Janice protests, but it's too late.

You're already sprinting out, grabbing the dragon's attention as its golden eyes track you. Whether it sense you as threat or prey, you're not sure, but what you are sure of is the red glow emanating from its mouth as it prepares to breath fire on you.

You brace yourself as the wall of fire advances towards you, raising your arms only to protect your more vulnerable face.

And then the fire hits you hard, your armor immediately glowing red hot, and you could feel your flesh sear and boil. This was nothing like Nino's magical fire, and for a brief second, you're concerned that you might not make it out of this unscathed.

But then something unexpected happens.

The enchanted dragon bracelet Nino had gifted you begins to glow, suddenly reacting to the dragonfire. And then there's a flash of blue light.

When your vision returns you find that armor has become... different. Your dragon bracelet was completely gone, incinerated or transmuted in the magical explosion, leaving behind an eternally smoldering and flaming suit of armor.

Now you truly were the Ashwalker in the most literal sense.

"W-what the-" Janice gasps.

"Fascinating." Elias' jaw actually drops.

Morgan and Artya then both begin to stir.

The dragon meanwhile hesitates, clearly not expecting this sort of outcome.

You look at your armor again. It was burning yet... you felt nothing. Maybe a faint sensation of heat as if having a blanket over yourself, but you felt no pain or burning.

You could get used to this.

Your thoughts are then interrupted by a roar as the dragon lumbers forward, its toothy maw wide open. Looks like if fire wouldn't finish you off, it would try tooth and claw.

You prepare for the oncoming charge of the dragon, but are interrupted when an arrow zips through the air, plunging itself into the dragon's eye. The best roars and veers away, smashing into a rock wall.

"You're welcome." Morgan grunts as she walks forward, nocking a fresh arrow into her bow.

You give Morgan a thumbs up, though you were still a bit miffed about her butting into your moment.

"...and your armor looks kinda cool now." Morgan mutters.

Another thumbs up.

The fresh dragon roar snaps the both of you out of your little conversation, reminding you the dragon was hurt, but not dead.

Seeing that it was apparently outmatched, the dragon starts to bound back into the tunnel it had come from.

"We can collapse that tunnel and lock it out of this chamber." Elias advises. "We don't need to chase it into its territory."

The biggest problem with Elias's belief is the assumption that this Dragon won't simply wait until We leave and find another way into the chamber. So unless he plans on boobytrapping it with some sort of Anti-Dragon magic, it would be much more effective to just simply end it's life and be done with it period.

You shake your head, heft you halberd, and stride forward after the dragon. You will not be leaving this cave without a dragon head.

"Should've figured." Morgan sighs as she follows you close behind.

Janice simply nods to Artya, who also heads in to follow you and Morgan.

"I will complete the mass summoning spell." Elias announces as he kneels down, a massive blue run glowing beneath him.

"I'll keep an eye on him." Janice assures you. "Go on ahead."

And so, clad in a new set of enchanted armor, you, Morgan and Artya pursue the fleeing dragon into the depths...

On average, there are a couple of dragon kills every few years. Generally, the majority of these kills are achieved by large raid parties or even entire armies. On rarer occasions smaller parties of less than 10 members are known to have pulled it off.

There are only three people confirmed to have actually soloed a dragon. Only one of them is alive today.
