You are pilot HARRY NEUMANN, the newest of one of the New UN Spacy's Tactical Sound Units!

Yesterday, Dorothea had pretty much passed out on the bridge due to a mixture of exhaustion and embarrassment, which you admit was partly your fault. Regardless, the both of you still needed rest, and Dorothea's quarters were the most convenient. It was close, had more than enough room, and she didn't really ever mind having you over.

Guess you pushed a little too much though, considering Dorothea actually swooned and all, but you were thankfully able to blunt any potential embarrassment on the scene.

After getting Dorothea to bed, you decided to give her some space and sleep on the couch in her living room instead. You actually had to wonder where she got the damn thing, since it was leagues more comfortable than most purpose built beds you've slept in.

When you wake up, you find that...

As your vision begins to clear and focus, you finally see Dorothea in full view. She's thankfully dressed, wearing her regular uniform sans the coat, getting a rear look at her undershirt, which did more to cling to and accentuate her curves than the heavier coat ever did.

Thankfully, it seemed that Dorothea either wasn't concerned about this or didn't think of it.

In her hands is a steaming mug of what you presume to be tea.

"I know the preference among pilots is coffee, but I didn't really have anything suitable." Dorothea says somewhat sheepishly. "I hope this will be enough."

"Thanks." You grin as you sit up on the couch, gently taking the mug. "Have a nice sleep?"

"It was... adequate." Dorothea huffs. "But needed, I admit."

"Of course." You grin as you take a sip from your mug. The tea, unsurprisingly, was impeccable.

"So, do you faint often like that?" You grin as you take a sip of the tea.

"O-Of course not!" Dorothea huffs. "It was simply a matter of exhaustion!"

"Sure, sure." You chuckle. "Still, you don't seem to be too miffed about me being here."

"Well, it's not as if it's the first time." Dorothea frowns. "And I couldn't very well just kick you out after helping me get back here."

"True enough."

"Still, you do understand that despite our..." Dorothea pauses to try to find the right words, "close relations, I'll have to remind you to refrain public shows of affection. It's not proper."

"Not proper for you or not proper for NUNS?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Both." She answers after a moment's hesitation.

"All right, I understand." You grin as you stand up and kiss Dorothea on the cheek.

"What did I just-"

"But we're not in public now, are we?" You wink as you set the now empty tea cup on the table and make your way the door.

Dorothea just pauses, and then puts a hand to her mouth to try to hide her laughter at the realization.

"All right, I'll let you off this time, Harry." She chuckles.

You give her a lighthearted salute before exiting. It was nice to see Dorothea loosening up, if only by just a bit.

Shit, today was supposed to be the concert, wans't it? The sudden skirmish with the Zentradi yesterday nearly made you forget about it.

You hope Amy didn't either.

You head down to the pilot ready room, where you suspect Lara would be at this early hour to check assignments and mission. Even though your unit acted independently from Pacifica's fighter wing, it was still a useful habit.

Sure enough, you see Lara scanning the various screens showing all of the assignments for the various squadrons. You could see your unit designation included too, though all it said was CONCERT. For obvious reasons, honestly.

"Hey Lara, anything interesting going on?" You ask as you walk up and stand next to her.

"Naaaaah." Lara shrugs. "SMS is handling the mop up, so there's not much to do right now."

"Any news on the Ace?" You continue, crossing her arms.

"Kellerman's got his scouts combing the area, but no trace." Lara frowns. "But Gateway Security did log a security breach in the mines, but it was in an abandoned part, which is why they're only now dispatching people to investigate."

You raise an eyebrow at that.

"Lara, you think you can go check it out? I need to go check on Amy."

"Sure thing, Cap!" Lara nods. "Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this!"

"Yeah, me too." You nod.

As Lara leaves, you take out your phone and call up Amy.

"Hey Cap." Amy answers, her voice still slightly tired. "What' with the early call?"

"Well, the concert is today..."

"Yeah, yeah, I didn't forget!" Amy groans.

"Didn't say you did." You laugh. "So where are you?"

"I'm with Karla right now at the stage doing final rehearsal." Amy replies.

"She's not making you do anything.. odd?" You glower.

"Nah, it's just the regular stuff right now. There's people here so she can't go into full creep mode."

"Good to hear." You nod. "All right, I'll head right over."

"See you soon!" Amy says as she hangs up.

With that, you head down to the hangar where you see your Valkyrie. It was still in rough looking shape, but at least the parts were fully refitted and repaired from the battle yesterday. You also notice a big red silhouette of a Zentradi battlesuit stenciled on the side next to your kill markers. Lara's doing, no doubt.

Speaking of Lara, you noticed her Valkyrie wasn't present. Probably already left on her own mission, no doubt.

You suit up and board your Valkyrie, going through the normal launch process and vector in towards Gateway, landing in the main spaceport terminal. While still open to civilian traffic, and still jammed with civilian transports and cargo haulers, there at least was a space set aside solely for NUNS military use.

It's another bit of a walk to the stage area, which was being erected in the center of the main dome. Of course, the area was heavily cordoned off by NUNS troops and work crews. Your uniform and a flash of your ID is enough to get you past the line and into the cordoned off areas.

You try to phone Amy again to get a lock on where she is, but she's not answering. Probably busy.

Your first instinct is to head backstage, where you can see Karla supervising Amy as she goes through the moves for her performance, Karla clapping her hands in a rhythm to make sure Amy has the right timing. In the background, you could hear a recording of one of Amy's songs in her setlist

"One two three, step step TWIRL!" Karla calls out the motions.

And just like that, Amy goes through her moves almost flawlessly.

Almost.

"Not quite there." Karla frowns as she checks her datapad. "You're falling behind on the beat around two minutes in. You'll have to tighten things up to stay in synch."

"Well, it would be a little easier if someone didn't require so much movement!" Amy groans, wiping some sweat from her forehead. "Especially since the setlist on this concert's supposed to be bigger!"

"Movement is needed to maintain some dynamism. Keep the crowd's interest on you." Karla sighs. "You can't just stand around static for too long."

"It'll be fine." Amy pants as she sees you present. "Right, Cap?"

"I think Karla has a point here." You nod. "Dynamic movement does a great deal in holding an audience's attention."

"Oh, so you're a expert on this, too." Amy rolls her eyes. "Sheesh, fine, I'll work on it more."

"Don't worry, I think I can hammer it into her before showtime." Karla shrugs with a grin. "Unless you think you can do a better job of it."

"Sorry, I should be focusing on security." You shake your head. "Can never be too careful."

"Ah, vigilant as ever." Karla smiles. "Go along, then. We don't have much time, so let's all do our best!"

"Easy for you to say." Amy grumbles as she pops open a water bottle.

"Nonsense, I probably have one of the hardest jobs here!" Karla chuckles. "Now let's see if we can tighten up this set!"

You leave Amy and Karla to their rehearsal, but the moment you step away, your phone rings. You see that it's Lara and pick up.

"Any news?" You ask.

"Yeah. Bad." Lara grunts. "Looks like someone, most likely our Red Ace, broke into Gateway through the old mining facilities."

"Well, shouldn't be too hard to find a full size Zentradi." You point out.

"It gets worse from there." Lara sighs. "Looks like she broke into an old micronization facility. One of the tubes here has definitely been recently used. She's for sure mixed into the general population by now."

"Shit." You scowl. "Any leads?"

"Given the amount of blood, she's still hurt bad. Surprised she even survived the process." Lara replies. "Best guess is she's gotta be looking for somewhere to treat her wounds. Maybe if we shake down hospitals and medical facilities around here, we can catch her."

"We're supposed to stay near Amy, especially since today is concert day." You frown. "We'll let Gateway Security handle it. Head to the concert grounds and we'll coordinate a security plan."

"Got it." Lara affirms and hangs up.

The moment she does, you immediately start going over the whole concert area with a fine tooth comb. If the Red Ace was indeed lurking somewhere in Gateway, then there was little doubt that she would be attracted to Amy's song the moment concert started.

But what would the best course of action be? Keep an eye on the perimeter to catch her before she can do any damage? Or stick close to Amy and use her as bait to lure the Ace in?

"So what's the plan, Cap?" Lara asks as she dashes in, apparently having run all the way over.

"We're going to keep an eye on the entrances." You say. "If the Red Ace is going to come through, then she's going to have to pass through one of the entrance gates."

"How are we supposed to even tell if it's her?" Lara raises an eyebrow. "We don't even know what she looks like."

"She's also an uncultured Zentradi, so she'll stick out like a sore thumb." You point out. "Simple really."

"And if she gets past us...?" Lara raises an eyebrow.

You take out your phone again and dial up Dorothea, who picks up almost instantly.

"That she's likely a fugitive hiding in Gateway, yes." Dorothea confirms. "What of it?"

"I was wondering if you could authorize the use of an EX-Gear suit for Amy's security detail." You ask.

"Granted." Dorothea replies. "Is there anything else?"

"How about you come down to see Amy perform in person?" You suggest. "If I recall correctly, you were on the ship last time."

"Hm, well, I suppose..." Dorothea pauses. "All right then, I'll come down and observe."

"Great. See you then."

"Until then."

You hang up your phone and check the time. The staff should be opening up the gates for the audience right now.

You find Amy, now dressed in her full idol getup and waiting in the wings to get onto stage. You could see she was still silently mouthing the words to her songs, trying to keep the lyrics memorized as she mentally prepared herself for her opening act.

"Hey, kid." You put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You doing all right?"

"Well, I got through this once, I can do it again..." Amy laughs nervously. "I'm just a bit worried they won't like my closing act."

"Well, at least someone will like it." You grin.

"Gee, what a vote of confidence." Amy smiles as she rolls her eyes. "Still, it's great to see so many people turning up to watch this."

Sure enough, the people of Gateway were starting to gather at the gates, filing through as the guards diligently made sure to inspect each and every one of them.

You head further backstage, where you see Lara getting fitted into her EX-Gear suit, the power armor fitting on to her like a glove. Upon seeing you, Lara smiles and waves.

"I'll be your eye in the sky, Cap!" She says happily as she skates circles around you thanks to the rollers built into the legs.

"I'll be counting on you." You nod as Lara rolls off to find a safe area to take off.

"You better hope she doesn't damage that." Dorothea huffs as she walks up next to you. "EX-Gears aren't exactly cheap."

"Don't worry, Lara's careful."

Dorothea gives you a very, VERY skeptical look.

"Most of the time." You concede.

And at moment, the lights around the dome darken, with only a few select spotlights focused on the stage.

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!" The announcer booms. "PRESENTING THE GALACTIC IDOL AMY!"

And on cue, Amy burst onto the stage skipping around and waving to the crowd. The crowd, having had little to cheer for in the past few weeks, go absolutely nuts as the entire dome is filled with applause.

"Hey, everyone!" Amy says happily, her voice amplified, "I'm glad you all could make it to the concert! I don't wanna keep you all waiting too much longer so let's get this started!"

And just like that, Amy gets right into her signature song.

"Looks like she's improving by leaps and bounds." Dorothea nods as she observes. "It's nice to see she feels confident in front of a live crowd."

"Believe me, she's probably fighting not to soil yourself." You chuckle. "Anyways, I should head over to the gate. Everyone so far has checked out clean, but you never know who might sneak in."

"Do you need assistance?" Dorothea looks to you, apparently offering to volunteer.

"I can handle it." You assure her. "Just enjoy the show."

"All right." Dorothea nods and then kisses you on the cheek. "Good luck."

You just blink in surprise, caught off guard by the sudden intimacy. Not that you minded, though.

"We're still backstage, so nobody can see." Dorothea gives a wry smile and winks.

Damn, she could be pretty devious sometimes.

By the time you reach the main entry gate, Amy is already transitioning into her next song. A cover from another popular idol group.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3nfweteZck

You look up, and you can see the small twinkling running light of Lara's X-Gear floating above.

"Got a solid visual on you, Cap!" She says happily.

"Good." You nod and turn your attention to the gate. Even tough most of the audience has already arrived, there were still stragglers trickling in.

More time passes, and Amy gets through several more songs though it's clear she's starting to wind down to the finale. At this point, there's practically nobody else coming through the gate. Everybody who was going to come already had.

You check the ticketing lists again. No anomalies, either.

You wonder if the Red Ace was really going to show up or not when your radio buzzes.

"Cap, I got a visual of someone hopping the fence on the north side." Lara informs you. "Might be our girl. Movements seemed to be slow and sluggish, too."

"Do you still have visual?" You ask.

"Sorry, I can't pick her out from the crowd." Lara apologizes.

"Don't worry, we know where she's going." You nod as you make your way to the stage. Amy was just now starting to wrap up her second to last song.

You decide to stay back, taking a position near the stage as Amy began to transition to her last song of the night.

"Hey, everyone." Amy gulps as she speaks into the microphone. "Errrr, I know you all really like my previous songs, but... well... I wanted to try something a little different. Sing some of the stuff I like. So... just bear with me, okay? I hope you all like it, too!"

This causes a bunch of confused and concerned murmuring as Amy takes a deep breath and starts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7NSUFDHFgg

The heavy metal guitar and drums start blasting through the concert area as Amy's singing gets faster and more intense than ever, keeping up with more frantic beat of the new song.

All the while, you keep a close eye on the crowd, looking for anything that stood out...

And that's when you catch it. A lone figure pushing and shoving their way through the crowd towards the stage like a rabid dog. If you moved now, you could intercept her, but there was a chance the altercation could spill out onto the stage where Amy was at.

Then again, Lara could swoop down and snag the Ace with her EX-Gear, taking her a safer location to neutralize. Though that plan was also fraught with its own risks, considering Lara would actually have to dive into the crowd with her heavy powered armor.

However, the Red Ace was much quicker than you had expected, and she manages to reach the edge of the stage before you could-

However, standing in the Red Ace's way is no other than Dorothea herself, who throws a punch directly into the Red Ace's face, snapping her head back and causing the Zentradi crumple to the ground, unconscious just as Karla and a NUNS security team come marching in.

Thankfully, the crowd is too entranced by Amy's performance to even notice what had just happened as they continue to yell and cheer. You're not sure if even Amy herself has noticed, so caught up in her own performance.

"Thanks for the help, Admiral." You say sheepishly.

"It seemed like you needed it." Dorothea says simply, maintaining her composure a the Red Ace is cuffed and dragged away by NUNS soldiers.

"My my, this will be an interesting night." Karla giggles. "And I never took you for a fighter, Admiral."

"There's a lot of things you don't know about me." Dorothea narrows her eyes.

"Is that so?" Karla's smile widens as she eyes the both of you. "We'll see in due time."

And with that, Karla makes her exit, following the NUNS soldiers carting the Red Ace off.

It's only until Karla is well and truly out of sight and earshot that Dorothea visibly winces.

"Owowowowowow." She whimpers, cradling her hand. "How do you people do that?"

"Why try not to punch the hardest part of their skull, for starters." You laugh. "Come on, let's get some ice for that."

And as if on cue, Amy's song finally ends and the lights dim. You and Dorothea pause long enough to see Amy wave and bow to the cheering crowd.

And for some reason, you just couldn't shake this feeling of immense pride.

The only rivalry I see is the fighting kind. Red Ace finding out what Love and Romance is would probably short her brain out due to how alien a concept it is. And that's not talking about the possibility of her misunderstanding what a relationship is.

If that happens, even more stories about us getting along with the Admiral AND the Ace will start spreading.
